Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls. But a dark cloud approaches, and times are about to change. A new chapter in the tale of Dark Gate Academy is about to begin.

“Ryoji, are you even listening to me?”

“Nope,” you smirk, looking up as Saki from your bent over position. “I've got a lot more important stuff on my mind right now.”

“Writing profanities on my cast isn't important!” a flustered Saki pouts.

You smirk, placing the cap on the black marker and taking a step back, happily admiring your handiwork. After you had some time alone with it, Saki's arm cast has found itself without any free space, covered top to bottom with a wide-array of messages from you. “Sak, you and I have very different definitions of the word 'important'.”

“Ryoji, listen!” Saki exclaims. “Don't you have any idea what week this is?!”

“Uh... the week we beat up an Archdemon and have a lot of free time to mess around?”

“It's Birthday Week!” Saki exclaims.

“Birthday... what?” you ask. “What's that supposed to mean?”

“This is the week in the year where many of our classes birthdays fall. This week, we have Chihiro, Seishiro, Hikaru, Satomi, Ken... even Nurse Tekina!”

“And you're panicking over this because...?”

Saki is frantic enough to start waving her arms, but is quick to stop due to the cast. “Ryoji, as head of class it's my job to ensure that everyone has a great birthday! We need to keep morale up, and I can't do it alone while I'm in this cast!”

“Don't worry, you're only in that thing until tomorrow anyway,” you reply. “And I left you with plenty of comforting message in your cast until then.”

“Comforting?” Saki protests. “T-these are c-crude and vulgar! All of them... well, except for this one. Both our names contained within a love heart!”

“I don't remember writing that one,” you raise an eyebrow.

“That's because I wrote it!” you hear Chihiro's voice from behind. You lean back on your desk as Chihiro approaches, playfully running a finger down your chest. “Well? Don't you have anything to say to me?”

“Happy birthday, Chihiro,” you reply.

With a smirk, Chihiro throws her arms around you, kissing you on the cheek, as Saki turns red with embarrassment. “Oh, don't worry Saki!” Chihiro giggles with a wink. “I'm kissing you next! But for now...”

Chihiro pulls away and reaches into her bag, pulling out a small green cellphone. “Since you remembered... here's your birthday gift!”

“Usually you're the one who gets gifts on your birthday...” you mutter.

“Usually,” Chihiro laughs. “But because of my father's wealth, most of my friends find it difficult to purchase gifts for me. So instead... I but them gifts! This year, I've elected to give everyone in class their very own cellphone!”

As you take the green phone off Chihiro's hands, you note as she hands a blue one over to Saki as well. “I already have everyone's contact details saved onto them, and your contact details are saved onto all of theirs!”

“Wow... that's some forward planning,” you mutter. “That's like... Saki-level forward planning.”

“She was my main influence, yes!” Chihiro giggles, hugging into Saki. “Get well soon, Saki! And I expect to see you both at my birthday party in the dorms tonight!”

Chihiro skips off to deliver phones to other classmates like some kind of flirty Santa Claus, before quickly skipping back and grabbing Saki by her un-injured arm.

“What the-”

“Oh, I almost forgot!” Chihiro smiles. “Come with me, my dear Saki! You absolutely must fill me in on every last detail of your meeting with the Shidas!”

A red in the face Saki begins to stammer out some poor attempt at an excuse before being pulled along by Chihiro. “Come now Saki, and spare no detail. I want to know everything!”

“Ryojiiiiiiii!” Saki calls out, reaching to you in desperation as Chihiro drags her away. You let out an exasperated sigh, knowing that everyone in school will be filled in on your night with Saki by lunchtime, as you open up your new cellphone, to see you've already been sent three new messages. Dammit... you liked it better when you found people with problems on your own... now there's nothing to stop your friends from bothering you at all hours during the day. Well, nothing you can do about it now. You lean back further at your desk before checking the messages within.

Well, at least the sky isn't falling. You can just hang out with your friends at your leisure, and with Saki currently being interrogated, it's not like you've got anything better to do.

>Meet with Hiro

Hanging out with Ken sounds fun and training with Rei sounds... rigorous, but those can be done anytime. It seems that Hiro requires your assistance right now. You send back a simple "Maybe later" to both Rei and Ken and make your way towards the Class 1 homeroom.

As you arrive, you see Ken standing by the door, a wide grin on his face. "Oh, hello Ryoji!" he calls out, waving to you. "Wasn't sure if you were going to join me. Good to see you!"

"Good to see you too," you mutter. "Hey, so what's this presentation about, anyway?"

Hiro nods. "Glad you asked! I noted that there was a lack of camaraderie going on throughout most of class 1, so with the permission of Mr. Kudawa, I've decided to give a little talk on the importance of friendship!"

"That sounds like the lamest thing that has ever happened," you admit.

Hiro chuckles. "Ah, there's that classic Ryoji humour! Exactly what I need!"

"I don't understand," you scratch your head, "Why do you need me for this?"

"Well, you're a classic delinquent!" Hiro explains. "But you still have so many friends in class, and you've brought so much of the class together! I just need you to talk a little about how to make friends and get people to like you!"

"Pretty sure you can do that yourself..."

"That's the problem!" Hiro explains further. "I don't know how I do it, I just have lots of friends! I like being nice to everyone, but I can't put it into words exactly how I do that. But you're much better with words than I am, so I thought you would!"

Hiro leads you into the classroom and begins to set up his presentation. You can't believe you allowed yourself to be roped into something this dumb... still, Hiro's a good kid, and you're more than willing to help him out whenever you can. To your surprise, Hiro asks you to start things off, and as you look directly at Kazuma, the only kid in this class you actually know, you scour through your mind, trying as hard as you can to come up with what aspect of making friends you should focus on.

You think back to how exactly you got to where you are right now. You know you wouldn't be at this point if you didn't make that leap to rely on and trust people like Saki and Ken, and for them to be able to rely on you, to come to you with their problems. Saki helped you through so many of your lower points, while you stood up for her when her parents were being monsters. Before long, the two of you were together, and you couldn't be happier.

"What's really important in making friends is give and take," you explain. "You know... being able to rely on people and have people be able to rely on you."

A girl in the class raises her hand, seeming to be taking a lot of notes. "Can you elaborate?"

"Sure... Io, right?" you ask, prompting the girl to nod. You recognise her as one of Kazuma's friends, and you wonder why she's so eager to learn this stuff. "Ultimately, it boils down to being able to put your faith in someone, whether it's in battle or just in your personal life. Once you put your faith in others, you'll be able to show them that they can put their faith in you."

Io continues to scribble notes, while Hiro steps up and begins to talk. "So, let's have a quick friendship exercise! We all know about trust falls, right? Let's try out some of those. Starting with... Kazuma, and... let's see... ah, Mayu!"

Mayu shakes her head, looking very uncomfortable in her chair. "Please no," she mutters in a cold tone.

"You shouldn't turn down a way to make your friendships stronger!" Hiro laughs. "I picked you two because I know you're teammates, and I know you trust each-other-"

"No," Mayu mutters.

Hiro places his hands on his hips. "Oh... well then... Kuin! You can join instead!"

A green-haired girl in a cape comes rushing to the front of the room. As she does, the tall brown haired kid who looks older than you yells to Kazuma. "Hey Kaz, if you don't catch her, I'll kill you!"

"It's really not that hard Gado," Kazuma sighs. "Look."

Kuin leans back, and Kazuma catches her in a simple display. "Wow, I'm sure we all learned a lot about friendship," Kazuma rolls his eyes as he speaks in a bored tone."

"You can catch me anytime," Io smiles as she nudges Kaz elbow on the way back to his chair. "I have complete trust in you!"

"See? That's the attitude I want to see!" Hiro smiles. He proceeds to go on about friendship and it's benefits for another ten minutes to a very bored class, until Kudawa cuts him off, sending you and him out into the hall.

As you step out, Hiro pauses. "Hmm... do you think I got through to them?"

>Yeah, without a doubt.
>At least one of them was listening, that's something.
>Eh, the message could have been stronger...
>They're just a bunch of kids. Hard to get through to them.

Hiro pauses, then nods. "Ha, I think you're right! If I could get through to just one of them, then the entire presentation is worth it! Wouldn't you agree?"

"Yeah, you did good work Hiro," you reply.

"You did a mighty fine job yourself!" Hiro laughs. "I knew you had the ability to be eloquent! And when you spoke, they listened! Have you ever considered a job in teaching?"

"I figured myself more of a janitor," you mutter.

"Whatever makes you happy!" Hiro smiles. No matter what you say, this kid will have limitless support. There's no stopping his positivity train. "Thanks so much for helping out, Ryoji. You make me proud to call you my friend!"

"Aren't you proud to call everyone your friend?" you ask.

"True..." Hiro admits. "But don't think that dilutes it. We should do something like this again sometime! Passing on the message of trust and friendship! Together, we could save lives!"

"Save lives?"

"Well, that's all I want to do!" Hiro explains. "To help people. To keep them going. Isn't that what life is all about?"

You shake your head. "Yeah... but don't forget to take some time to yourself. It's not good to be too self-sacrificing."

"But it's not a sacrifice!" Hiro explains. "I'm always happy when I'm helping!"

Hiro walks on, parting ways with you, as you check your phone once more.

>Hang out with Nariko

Nariko is one of your friends you often find yourself not hanging out with much. You don't know if it's because of her stupid thief of a cat constantly terrorising you, but you often find yourself talking to Nariko only when she's part of a group. If she's calling for you to hang out with her now, you should probably take the opportunity, especially if she has news to share with you.

You make your way down to the school gate to find Nariko standing there, holding her two cats in hand like a pair of babies. "Ah, there you are! Down you go, boys! Momma's going out for lunch!"

You shake your head as you approach Nariko. "You're calling yourself 'momma' now?"

"Now?" Nariko laughs. "I always called myself that around my babies!"

"I can't imagine ever liking a cat as much as you like all cats," you say, before hunkering down in order to give RyojiCat a nice little fist bump. "This one's cool, though."

"I'm glad you think so!" Nariko laughs. "Saki keeps calling little Ryoji a pervert."

"He is," you clarify. "That's what makes this cat cool."

You walk with Nariko into town as she calmly stretches out. "Ah, small town life. Always reminds you of home. How'd you enjoy visiting your parents?"

"Well, my home town's more of a fishing village," you explain, "Not like Dakugeto at all when you get down to it..."

"Oh," Nariko ponders. "Well, I guess it's just me. I grew up in a town just like this."

"You never talk about your childhood," you remark. "You own a lot of pets back then, too?"

"Hey, I asked my question first!" Nariko points out, clearly deflecting from your query.

You nod. "Meeting my parents was fun. They're good people... and since I'm sure Chihiro's already told you by now, Saki and I had our first time."

"Wow, really?" Nariko gasps.

"Huh... guess Chihiro was less willing to spread this one around school," you chuckle. "Well, now I'm the gossip spreader."

The two of you check into one of the nearby cafes. You grab a beef bowl, while Nariko grabs a salad. "Is that all you're ordering?" you ask, raising an eyebrow. "There's not even any meat on your plate."

"Vegetarian," Nariko explains.

You shrug. "Should have figured... you are a huge animal lover after all."

"Now, are you ready for my big news?" Nariko asks.

"Let me guess..." you mutter. "You fixed your anger issues? You've got a new cat?"

"This morning, Hiro asked me 'what do guys usually do when they like a girl?' He's never asked something like that before, which must mean that he's finally showing romantic interest in a girl... and I have a sneaking suspicion that girl might be me!"

Nariko grins with excitement, looking towards you expectantly. "Well... what do you want me to say?" you ask.

"Nanami and Chihiro were very supportive about it all," Nariko explains. "So I came to you because you're a little more... cynical? Maybe that's not the right word... but I think you're more willing to be blunt about it. Do... do you think I've finally cracked through that shell that's been containing the romantic laying dormant within Hiro all this time? Is he finally going to become tha Casanova I know he can be and ask me out on a date?"

>Without a doubt. He clearly likes you.

"Hmm... you think so?" Nariko asks.

"I was chatting with Hiro just today," you explain. "He didn't seem any different. He was giving a presentation on the... importance of friendship."

Nariko giggles. "That sounds like Hiro, all right!"

"I think if he was interested in anyone, you would have hinted at it to me," you reply. "He didn't say anything like that, so I'm guessing you're just jumping the gun on a question that doesn't mean anything."

"Hmm..." Nariko mutters, looking down as she takes a bite out of her salad. "I suppose you're right... I am really just getting my hopes up, aren't I? Still, I'm not giving up hope on bringing Hiro out of his shell! It doesn't have to be me, but I know I can get Hiro to show some love for a very lucky girl by the end of the year!"

"Is this all you wanted to share?" you ask. "To be honest, this news wasn't as amazing as you hyped it up to be in your message."

"Well..." Nariko fidgets in her chair. "I may have exaggerated a little... the news about Hiro was just an excuse, really. In truth, I wanted to ask you something. About these... angels."

"Huh?" you ask. "Oh, you mean the archangels. Yeah, I guess news has been spreading around school..."

"They're saying Ken almost turned into one during the fight with Yami," she explains. "That we could all end up becoming one if our hearts are pure enough..."

"What's your point?" you ask.

"I'm just wondering... do you think I could be an angel?"

"I'm surprised you aren't already," you remark. "You're kind, you're sweet, you have plenty of friends... I don't understand what's holding most of you back."

Nariko places her hands on her lap, and lets out a sigh. Her face shifts into a much more sombre one. "Ryoji... I have to admit something to you..."

You lean forward in your chair and listen intently as Nariko continues to speak. "Now... not a lot of people know about this, so please don't tell anyone. It's my biggest secret. Promise?"

"Promise."

"Okay..." Nariko bites her bottom lip. "Ryoji... when I was seven years old... I killed someone."

What? You find it hard to believe that the girl sitting across from is capable of murder, let alone when she was just a kid.

"It... it was a school bully," Nariko explains. "Only a couple years older than me at the time... he was picking on a little kitten, he was going to kill it. That made me so... angry... I picked up a rock and threw it at him, hoping to scare him off! It... hit him in the skull. He fell over and died..."

"It was an accident," you reply. "It wasn't your fault. You were just a kid..."

"And now I'm a teenager," Nariko retorts, "And I still can't control my rage. I'm usually nice and cheerful to everyone... and I rarely do go into that... that rage form of mine... but when I do, I have no control over myself. When I wake up after using it... I see the faces of my friends... and they all look afraid of me. Like I'm a monster."

There's a long silence between the two of you, before Nariko manages to squeak out another sentence through a cracking voice. "I... I just don't know what to do about that."

"Meditating?" Nariko asks. "You know, you're not the first to recommend that, actually. I guess I could give it a try... but I don't know if I'm the the meditating type. I don't really like sitting still for things, and I'm the kind of person who likes getting immediate results."

You shrug. "Hey, if you're that worried about it, shouldn't you try everything you can? I think it could be good for you, assuming your cat doesn't try to grope me while your sitting down."

"What?" Nariko laughs. "My cats would never grope people!"

"Tell that to my girlfriend," you chuckle. "At the end of the day, Nariko... you're strong, and I know you're determined. You should be able to handle you issues, and try whatever you can. I know you can do it."

"Of course, I think all of you can. Nothing excludes you."

You're welcomed with a long, drawn out and very excited greeting from Chihiro. "Saki was just filling me in on your trip to meet your parents, and might I just say it warmed my heart!"

>It was fun, you should join us next time.

"Oh, we should join you and Saki next time?" Rini smirks. "Heh heh..."

"No dirty thoughts," you sigh. "I meant in visiting my home. You guys are like family to me, so it would be cool if you met my parents as well."

"Aww, you consider us family?" Chihiro claps her hands together.

"Yeah, and accept that compliment as your birthday gift," you reply. "I didn't get any for anyone."

"Don't worry, I've got you covered!" Saki smiles. "I bought gifts for everyone, addressed from the both of us! Here you are, Chihiro!"

Saki hands Chihiro a small gift, which she quickly unwraps to reveal a heart-shaped gold-frame, containing a picture of Saki and Chihiro, with you looking very unsuspecting in the background. "I had to be sneaky in order to get Ryoji in the picture," Saki explains. "But I'm sure you can appreciate it... I hope."

Chihiro nods. "It's adorable, I love it!"

Chihiro pulls you and Saki in for a group hug, before addressing you. "Now that I know my good friends consider me to be part of their family, I should tell you that I've elected to know my own family better!"

"Does that mean-"

"That's right!" Chihiro winks. "I'll finally be revealing my true identity to my grandmother! Alice wants to meet with her sister, and I figured it's only right that I do this first! Get it out of the way!"

"Nervous?" you ask.

"Oh, most definitely!" Chihiro laughs.

"Don't be!" Rini commands. "Just do it! Do it quick, like tearing off a band-aid!"

"Still... I could use some emotional support," Chihiro mumbles. "I'm doing it tomorrow."

"I'll be right behind you!" Saki smiles.

"And Ryoji?" Chihiro asks, looking at you. "You... helped me when first meeting her."

>Of course. I'm there for you.

Chihiro smiles warmly as she places her hand on your cheek. "Oh, Ryoji! I knew you would! Now, let's all enjoy some lovely tea!"

Chihiro's party goes off without a hitch, everyone having a pretty good time. During the night, you notice Hiro approaching Seishiro.

"I think I solved you problem, friend!" Hiro smiles.

Seishiro raises an eyebrow towards the eager Hiro. "What problem? What are you talking about?"

"I talked to Nariko and she gave me some advice for that girl you like!"

"Girl... what?" Seishiro mutters.

"I saw you hanging out around Satomi's room this morning!" Hiro laughs. "But you were too scared to go in! I didn't understand why at first, but then Rini explained in... explicit detail... but I know what you can do! You should get Satomi a give to show that you like her!"

"I don't like Satomi!" Seishiro grumbles. "And the only reason I didn't go in was because people were watching and... j-just leave me alone!"

Well, that solves that brief mystery. Nariko seems to have overheard it too... seeming upset for a second, but then relieved to have an answer to her worries.

>The next day

"Oh, this is going to be so splendorous!" Chihiro exclaims as you and Saki follow her through the town. "Alice was very worried about meeting her sister, so I decided that I would do this first in order to encourage her! Oh, I'll be so relieved to just... tell the truth! I can't wait for my grandmother to welcome me with open arms!"

It seems she's adamant on looking on the bright side of things... you don't know how healthy that is, assuming things might not go as planned for her.

As the three of you reach the door of Charlotte Maddox's quaint little cottage in the middle of Dakugeto, you find Chihiro hesitating at the door... it reminds you of the first time you visited this house with her, she was a bundle of nerves then too. Always odd seeing Chihiro of all people being unsure with herself. But hey, as of yesterday, she's 17. Older and wiser, right?

"I... I don't know if I can do this..." Chihiro mumbles. "Ryoji... help me. What should I say?"

"You should just come out and say it," you reply. "Like Rini said yesterday. Quick and easy, like a band-aid."

"Indeed..." Chihiro mutters, still unsure of herself.

"Do you want me to knock on the door?"

"No!" Chihiro exclaims, nervously. "No... this time, I can do it myself."

With a deep breath, Chihiro knocks on the door. She fidgets and bites her lip as she waits anxiously for the door to open. It slowly creaks open, as Chihiro's grandmother Charlotte slowly peers out, before opening the door fully when she catches a glimpse of Chihiro. "Ah, it's you. That lovely girl... Chihiro, isn't it?"

Chihiro says nothing, simply nodding.

"Ah, well come in!" Charlotte smiles. "I've got the teapot on the stove and-"

"Before I do, I have something to tell you," Chihiro explains. "Something very important. You see... I'm your granddaughter."

Charlotte tilts her head to the side, confused. "Oh my dear, you must have me confused with someone else. I don't have a granddaughter!"

"Yes you do!" Chihiro exclaims. "It's me! My father is your son!"

Charlotte pauses for a moment, before her smile fades, her eyes widen, as her voice takes a much colder tone. "Oh... I see. You're his child."

"Yes..." Chihiro mumbles. "I... I know you and my father don't get along, but... you're my family, and I really wanted to get to know you. You're a lovely woman, but I still couldn't bring myself to admit who I really was to you... until now."

"Hmm..." Charlotte hums. "I understand why you'd be scared."

"I'm sorry for lying to you," Chihiro mutters. "I felt guilty for it every day we had tea."

"Oh, that comes as no shock to me..." Charlotte mutters.

Chihiro smiles. "Yes, I'm sure you can tell how bad I felt about it-"

"I always expected the spawn of that son of mine to be a dishonest rodent like him."

"W... what?" Chihiro asks, her voice cracking in shock at the comment.

Charlotte shakes her head. "I am sorry to disappoint you, young madam, but you are no family of mine. I would appreciate it if you stepped out of my garden and never came here again."

"B-but... I-I-"

"Move along now," Charlotte demands, as she closes the door in Chihiro's face.

As Chihiro makes her way back to you and Saki, her face is completely blank... though by the time she reaches the gate where the two of you are waiting, tears are streaming down her face.

"Oh dear..." she sobs, trying hard to put on a brave face. "It seems I've offended her... how positively rude of... of..."

>No words, just hug her.

There's nothing you can say that's going to make Chihiro feel better about what just happened. The least you can do is remind her that she still has a family in the form of you and Saki, and that there'll still be people there for her. You pull Chihiro in and hold her tight. She wraps her arms around you and squeezes tight as she readily sobs into your chest. Saki approaches and does her best to comfort her as well, placing a gentle hand on Chihiro's shoulder.

"Let's go home..." Saki replies with a comforting smile, prompting Chihiro to turn her head towards her and sniffle.

"R-right..." she cries. "I... I should have a n-nice... relaxing... lie down. If I don't, I'll look positively dreadful when it comes time for Hikaru's party tonight!"

"I... I'll stay with you for that," Saki replies. "Keep an eye on you."

"Oh, you are just lovely, Saki..." Chihiro sniffles. "I can see why Ryoji chose you over anyone else... you're a good friend."

"You are too," Saki smiles.

"T-thank you... both of you..." Chihiro wipes her eyes before placing a hand on your arm. She doesn't wink, as the tears are still streaming steadily down her cheeks, and instead you and Saki just lead her back to the dorms, as Saki brings Chihiro into her room, for her and Sayeka to take care of her while she's down.

You run your fingers through your hair, frustrated by how awful that old woman was to Chihiro... still, she's old and set in her ways. Maybe she can warm up to her granddaughter in time... regardless, you find yourself checking your phone for new messages.

>Look for Hoshi

Hoshi may be one to panic over every little thing, but you're not sure if there's anyone currently with her to help calm her down right now. Might as well be you. You check around the dormitory, but come up short in your search. She must be in the main school building. You begin to wander the halls of the school, when you find yourself being called for by Agent Blue, one of the government goons on hand within the academy.

"Yo, you're Shida, right?" Blue asks.

"Yeah, what of it?" you ask.

Blue sighs, as you begin to hear some light mumbling and sobbing coming from under the stairway next to him. "Maybe you could help me out here? You know Sanada, right? The girl who cries all the time?"

You shake your head as you approach. "I found her curling up in here after being called to the principal's office," he explains. "I'm really bad with kids, but I'm sure she'll listen to one of her friends. Little brat is going to hurt her neck staying in there..."

You hunker down to see Hoshi in her usual position, her knees pressed up to her face, lowly whining to herself.

"What's wrong?" you ask. "A trip to the principal's office... I can't imagine you being in any trouble, let alone expelled."

"M-m-m-m-my..." Hoshi stumbles out, still hiding her face behind her knees. "My... dad and brother are... are..."

"Did something happen to them?" you ask.

"N-no..." Hoshi mumbles. "They... they're coming to the school..."

"Huh?"

"Shooting Star i-is a big supporter of Dark Gate Academy, and... they'll be working closely with the government in the future..."

"That doesn't sound too bad," you mutter. "I thought you liked your family?"

"I... I do," Hoshi explains. "I... I'm just very nervous. They'll want to keep a close eye on me and... I don't want to disappoint them!"

"I doubt you'll do that," you reply. "You're a top student."

"Uuuuuu," Hoshi lets out a low groaning sound of general unease. "Ryoji... a-are these angels real?"

You scratch your head. "You worried about that too?"

Hoshi buries her face further into her knees. "If... if archangels are real, t-then that means The Star was one... which means the prophecy is right, and I'm the next Star, and... and that means that I'm going to... uuuuu...."

"W-what do you mean?" Hoshi asks.

"I mean that nothing is ever set in stone," you reply. "So why worry about it? Come on, Hoshi. Stop stressing out over your dad, or some supposed prophecy. It's doing nothing for you other than making you worry more."

"S-s-so what am I supposed to do...?"

"You give your dad a hug and you forget about The Star," you shrug. "It's really not that hard."

"O... Okay!" Hoshi replies, sniffling. "I... I'll do that! I'll b-be b-brave!"

"Great," you smile. "Now come one, pretty sure there's a party waiting back at the dorms."

Hoshi nods as she scrambles out of the cramped space she put herself in.

"Good work Shida," Agent Blue mutters. "I really had no clue what to do. Kids crying like that... it just annoys me."

"Whatever," you reply, not willing to talk much to the suit, before taking Hoshi back to the dorms.

>Later

"Happy Birthday, babe!" Akio exclaims as he hands his gift over to Hikaru as she sits on the couch.

"Wow, it's a... signed photo of you," Hikaru mutters, admiring the ridiculous image of Akio striking a pose in front of a white backdrop with 'To Hikaru, my biggest fan' scribbled onto it. "And the real gift is...?"

"Right here," Akio smirks, chuckling to himself as he hands her a small novel. "It's..."

"Hey, I remember this!" Hikaru laughs. "This is actually a good one!"

"Yeah..." Akio smiles. "It's actually the book you were reading when we first spoke... I pulled a few strings with the current librarian and managed to get you that exact copy, for keeps!"

"And by that you mean..."

"I borrowed it and have no intention of giving it back ever," Akio finishes. "Yes."

Hikaru beams happily. "You're such a stupid jerk... thanks for the gift. I love you."

As Hikaru and Akio kiss, you see Hikaru's brother Shinji turning towards Satomi, likely trying to look away from his sister making out. "So Satomi... your birthday is two days from now, right?"

Satomi blushes and smiles as she is asked. "You remember?"

"Yes," Shinji nods. "I've already ordered your gift. I hope it arrives in time."

"You... you purchased a gift on my behalf?" Satomi mutters, blushing more as she plays with her hair. "Wow... thank you..."

"Hey bro, why don't you back off?" Seishiro says to Shinji in an angry, jealous sounding tone.

Shinji raises an eyebrow, confused. "Excuse me?"

"You heard me!" Seishiro yells. "Stop harassing the girl. You can't speak that way to cutiebutt-I MEAN, Satomi!"

"What... what did you almost call her?" A flabbergasted Akio asks.

"Nothing!" Seishiro protests. "I just... why would I be interested in a nerd? Come on, guys!"

Seishiro shuffles off awkwardly, as you see Satomi retreat to the corner of the room in embarrassment. You also see her hunker down by her bag, pull out a wrapped gift, then silently debate with herself as to whether she should give it to her old friend. Eventually, she places the gift back into the bag.

>You should give her that. She'll appreciate it.

"I should?" Satomi asks, looking up at you while biting her lip.

You give a simple nod, and Satomi nods back. "I should."

Satomi takes a deep breath, as she approaches Hikaru with the gift in her hand. Hikaru looks at her, raising an eyebrow. She looks like she expects Satomi to cause some kind of trouble, but instead Satomi simply hands her the wrapped gift. "For you," Satomi says.

Hikaru takes the gift, and Satomi quickly retreats, prepared to return to her room in shame.

"This... this is..." Hikaru mumbles.

"I'm sorry!" Satomi cries as she moves back at a steady pace, inching ever closer to the hallway.

Hikaru doesn't hesitate to tear the wrapping paper open and seeing what's inside. A framed photo, and an old one at that. Looking at it, you see a small blue haired child and another kid with orange-blonde hair standing together in what appears to be a playground. They look no older than six, the both of them. They're both holding up small, crude watercolour paintings of the other. They're both grinning wildly, one of them with a runny nose and thick, thick glasses, the other with a small scrape on their knee from falling down earlier. Looking at the caption in the frame, you see the words "I miss you" emblazoned upon it.

"Babe?" Akio mutters, as Hikaru places her hand to her mouth and her eyes begin to water. Hikaru is usually so calm and composed, but you can see she can't handle this one. As soon as she notices Satomi retreating towards the door, she calls out to her.

"Satomi, wait!" Hikaru cries, before rising from the couch and rushing towards her. She hugs her... or rather, she tackles Satomi to the ground in a loving embrace, squeezing her tight.

"Hikaru, I..." Satomi mumbles, unsure of what to say, but Hikaru cuts her off by playfully tickling her, causing Satomi to giggle.

"You're not allowed to be sad at my party!" Hikaru exclaims with a smile, hugging and tickling her old friend. "Remember? We made that rule years ago!"

"I remember!" Satomi giggles, returning the hug in turn, as the two begin rolling around on the floor together, giggling and laughing all the way.

"This is adorable..." Akio smiles. "And also kinda hot..."

"I know, right?!" Seishiro laughs. "Bro, that Satomi-"

"-I meant my girlfriend," Akio clarifies.

"Oh... yeah, duh! Satomi's not h-hot... heh... s-stupid nerd, am I right?"

Hikaru and Satomi spend the rest of the night reminscing over old times. Shinji gets involved as well, particularly in granting Hikaru the gift of their family's entire old photo album, including more than a few pictures of all three of them together. It warms your heart.

The next morning, you awake to learn that Seishiro doesn't plan on celebrating his birthday at all, and instead is just planning to spend the day relaxing in bed... with the door locked... and you're pretty sure you saw Satomi go in there as well. Oh well, since tonight isn't a safe one and a Darkworld incursion will be happening, you also learn that there'll be a mini-party being thrown during lunchtime for nurse Tekina. Until then, you find yourself looking at your phone.

>Meet with Akio

It's odd that Akio would be excited over something he found in a library, so you decide that whatever it is must be pretty damn cool. You message him back, and he informs you to meet him in the courtyard.

Once you arrive in the courtyard, you see Akio thumbing through a book. Things just keep getting odder and odder. "Let me guess, nude magazine?" you ask.

"Heh, nah..." Akio chuckles. "But it does have nudity in it. A lot of it male. One of those old books from hundreds of years ago, filled with pictures."

"And you find this cool, because...?"

"Because check this stuff out!" he says, passing you the book. You take one look at it and quickly realise the text is unintelligible.

"Akio, none of this is in Japanese," you remark.

"That's the cool part!" Akio laughs. "I asked Hikaru, and this thing is written in no known language! It must be from some ancient dead tongue!"

"Okay, that's pretty cool..." you admit. "But so what?"

"Look!" Akio says, thumbing through the pages of the book and stopping at one of the illustrations. "Check it out! That looks like that stone that powers up The Stranger, right?"

Looking at the illustration... it does. But it doesn't mean much, not like a glowing rock is such an odd thing to see a drawing of. "Anything else?"

"So much!" Akio exclaims. "Pictures of demons and angel and all sorts of weird stuff are scattered throughout this thing! I think this book is about the Darkworld! Probably written by one of the original villagers way back during the first breach!"

"So... they knew about the angel thing back then?" you ask.

Akio nods. "Looks like it! Anyway, I was thinking we could get into contact with those Demon Slayers... that Miyoko, their leader, was one of the original villagers, right? She can probably translate this for us."

>Yeah, it couldn't hurt.

>I could try asking Stranger instead. He might know.
>Yeah, it couldn't hurt.

"Yeah, because that demon of yours is so helpful, right?" Akio rolls his eyes.

"Hey, it never hurts to ask." You shut your eyes closed and focus your mind, trying hard to get into contact with The Stranger. He's been so silent this last while... still, you have to focus in order to get through to him. "Stranger..."

"What do you want this time?"

"Check out this book," you reply. "Language is unfamiliar. Is it written in demonspeak or something?"

"Let me see... nope, I have no idea what any of that says."

"What?! How can you not? Aren't you supposed to be a demon god?"

"Oh, and that means I'm supposed to know everything? Look, whatever that thing is, it was written by humans. Go ask a human about it, it's their language."

"Well... Stranger wasn't any help," you remark.

"So..."

"Let's get in contact with the Demon Slayers," you reply.

You get to moving alongside Akio, finding Ken in the hallways as you do. "Hey guys!" he smiles.

"Hey Ken," you reply. "Do you still have the number for the Demon Slayers?"

"Uhh... yeah?" Ken asks, pulling out his phone. "What's going on?"

You explain the situation to Ken, and he nods dutifully. "Oh... okay then..." he mumbles as he rings up the number. He waits for a while until you hear it pick up, the faint buzz of what you assume is Nishi voice talking away to Ken. Ken chats with the former demon for a while on the phone, updates her on Yami's condition, then finally ends the call with a sigh.

"Miyoko knows the language, but she won't be able to make it up anytime soon," Ken explains.

"More likely she just doesn't want to translate anything for us," Akio mutters.

"She also said there were others in this school that could read it, but didn't clarify further... so I don't know."

"Oh well..." Akio places his hands on his hips. "Guess it can't be helped. We'll either have to wait for Miyoko or find out who can read that book, if anyone can... but now that that's out of the way, I've got a bone to pick with you, Ken!"

"About what?"

Akio pumps his fist and strikes a dynamic pose. "Don't forget, I'm the most powerful human there is! I'm not going to let you attain your angel form before I do! I'm going to leave you in the dust!"

"I wasn't even trying to awaken an angel..." Ken sighs.

"You're never going to beat me, Ken! Never!" Akio exclaims further.

>I don't know, looks like Ken's closer.
>He's right, Ken. Akio's most likely to reach that level among all of us.

>Maybe if you dropped some ego, you might be closer to angel form.

"Ego?" Akio laughs. "Come on, my ego isn't that bad! Besides, how can it be ego when I actually am as good as I say I am?"

"Yep, no ego here..." Ken rolls his eyes. "Besides, the angel thing isn't about strength. It's about having a pure heart."

"And you think I don't?" Akio retorts. "I'm good to Hikaru! Did you not see my birthday gift to her? And I got a huge gift for Seish too! I'm good to my friends, right?"

Ken simply shrugs, not wanting to give a real answer.

Akio stares at him. "Right? Are you... Ken, are you trying to tell me I'm a bad friend?"

"I... I wouldn't call you a bad friend necessarily, but-"

"Oh..." Akio mutters. "Well... I'm gonna think about that for a while. Hold onto the book, don't bother returning it to the library either. If the current librarian gets that one back, she'll expect the other one too."

As Akio wanders off, Ken turns to you. "Yikes, I might have hurt Akio's feelings a little... he'll get over it, right?"

"I give it five minutes before he forgets you even said anything to him," you reply. "He's tough, he can takes a little criticism, regardless of ego."

"Still..." Ken sighs. "I do consider him a friend, it's just..."

"Whatever, let's get moving to this mini-party for the nurse."

>Later

Arriving at the nurse's office, you can see that it's surprisingly packed. Most of you class are there, including a good portion of class 1... namely Kazuma and his club. "Well, well if it isn't my kouhai!" you smirk.

"Figured you'd be here, Ryoji..."

"What are you doing here?" you ask. "You close to the nurse?"

"No..." Kaz mutters. "But our... former homeroom teacher, current janitor, is about to make a huge fool of himself with his gift. He had an actual bronze statue of her made in preparation for this day."

"That's... pretty weird," you remark. "But it's not all that odd for her boyfriend to-"

"Takeshi's a good guy," Kazuma protests. "A goof, but a good guy... I don't want him to be crushed by this."

"You can include me there..." Akihito replies, waiting at the back of the room with his arms folded. "The two of them are my best friends, and while I can't imagine anything bad happening between them... this could become ugly."

"Oh hey Akihito," you mutter. "Long time, no see."

"Yes... I suppose I haven't seen you at all since I was replaced as your homeroom teacher..." Akihito mutters.

"You miss us?" you smirk.

"More than you know..." Akihito shakes his head. "Ryoji, I know we never got along, but I would like to remain in contact. I'm very invested in your future. Perhaps you could meet me during my times off? Maybe some of the animosity between is gone now that I'm no longer bossing you around."

"Well... I can't say no to that when you're being all reasonable," you scratch your head. "Alright, teach. I'll think about it."

"Can't call me 'teach' anymore," Akihito smiles sadly. "I'm not your teacher anymore."

"Oh... you look sad..." Miss Yamano, your current homeroom teacher sighs. "Would you like a hug?"

"That's very inappropriate during work hours," Akihito replies.

"Not hearing a no," you chuckle, as Satomi soon bursts into the room, adorning a panicked face.

"I am so, so sorry I'm late!" She practically screams in terror. "I was busy doing something-I mean, someone else! Wait... oh no, I had it right the first time, then I said the wrong thing! Ah, please don't remove me as your assistant Tekina! I admire your brilliance and I want to be like you in every way!"

Satomi frantically bows, but Tekina simply laughs and ruffles Satomi's hair. "Oh, don't be silly! I'm always happy to see my little assistant, even when she isn't as punctual as usual!"

"I swear I'll make it up to you!" Satomi cries. "My birthday gift to you is that I'll work overtime with you every day for the next two months!"

"Oh, that sounds delightful!" Tekina smiles.

"Yes, it's a gift we can both enjoy!" Satomi smiles in turn.

Satomi soon moves to the crowd, standing beside you. She nudges you on the shoulder. "Hi... thank you."

"For what?"

"If you didn't tell me to... I wouldn't have braved giving that gift to Hikaru. Last night... it was the most fun I had in my life. I missed the days when we would play and she would tickle me and... and we were friends. I... I think we're finally back there."

>No problem. All I ask is for an apology for stabbing me on my second day here.

Satomi shifts in place and giggles uncomfortable. "That? Oh... yeah? W-well... should I really apologise? After all, doing so lead to us discovering that your blood was black... which lead to you choosing to stay, as well as us all learning more information about the Darkworld... and with you around, we were able to put an end to The Endless Night... so in a sense, me stabbing you actually saved the whole... okay, I'm sorry Ryoji."

You smirk as you pat her lightly on the head. "All I needed to hear."

You turn you attention back to Tekina, as you see her being approached by the janitor Takeshi, as he wheels behind him something very large and concealed by a cloth draped over it.

"Oh, Takeshi!" Tekina smiles brightly. "Is this your gift to me?"

"Y-yeah..." Takeshi gulps nervously. "I... I really hope you like me... I mean, it..."

"Don't be so nervous!" Tekina laughs. "We've been friends for twelve years now, I like every gift you get!"

"This one is..." Takeshi mutters. "It's a little bigger..."

With a deep breath, Takeshi pulls back the cloth, revealing the life-size bronze statue of the nurse. Tekina stares at it with wide-eyes, as Takeshi sweats nervously, waiting on her reaction.

"Takeshi..." She mutters, staring intently at the statue. "This is... this is... amazing!"

"H-huh?!" Takeshi exclaims. "I-it is?!"

"Of course!" Tekina laughs, clasping her hands together. "You captured my image perfectly! And the time and effort you must have put into it... oh, thank you!"

Tekina rushes Takeshi with a hug, that he babbles and shakes in response to, unsure of how to handle it. Eventually, he works up the courage to return the hug to his friend. Tekina smiles warmly, and proceeds to give Takeshi a quick kiss on the cheek. Then, as she pulls away a little and stares intently at him, she leans in and kisses him again on the lips... wait, what?

The kiss isn't a long one, but it's much longer than you'd expect. Long enough for Takeshi to kiss back and instinctively place his hands on her hips. Coming to their senses in front of the crowd, they both hastily break away and leap about three feet apart, the two of them looking incredibly nervous, with Takeshi sweating enough to fill a small swimming pool.

"Well... that's not supposed to happen!" Tekina exclaims, trying to laugh it off. "Silly me!"

"Y-y-y-yeah!" Takeshi barely manages to stutter out. "Hoo boy, that's never going to happen again!"

"Definitely!" A blushing Tekina maintains. "We'd be in big trouble if we did, after all!"

"If that went any longer, I would have been fired!" Takeshi laughs in a cheerful yet clearly panicked tone.

"Both of us would!" Tekina adds.

"And besides, w-we're just friends!" Takeshi chuckles, his teeth clenched and his eyes wide. "We're not... romantically interested in each-other! That... that would be weird!"

"Indeed!" Tekina laughs as well, continuing the trend of the two of them blurting out things that clearly neither of them believe. "And I'm not a fan of romance in the first place! It interferes with my experiments!"

"And my... m-mopping!" Takeshi adds. "Can't have a girlfriend get in the way of my c-custodial duties, r-right?"

"Glad that's settled!" Tekina nervously chuckles, before clearing her throat. "M-moving on! I have a huge announcement to make! Here on my birthday, I'm finally proud to reveal that the simulation room I've been working on is finally ready!"

"The simulation what-now?" Rei asks from the back of the room.

"The simulation room is a little project I've been working on!" Tekina explains. "With a little ingenuity and the help of many of my Darkworld samples... plus a lot of government funding, I've been able to develop a room in which we can simulate Darkworld threats and foes, all within a non-lethal environment. Now students can hone their skills even on safe days!"

"Whoa, I am so in!" Rei exclaims.

"I call first dibs!" Akio yells, beating Rei to the punch.

"Hey, screw you Akio!" Rei yells. "I'll kick your ass in there!"

"Well, let me just say that the simulation room will finally be open for business... tomorrow!" Tekina announces. "Can't open it today, tonight we'll be travelling to the Darkworld anyway!"

Oh yeah... so you are. Well, with that bizarre mini-party over and done with, you should probably get to preparing for tonight's excursion.

That's all for tonight! Will be continuing tomorrow at around 1pm!

"Well, this looks easy."

Rei's comments as you enter the Darkworld seem to strike a nerve in Saki. "Let's not get too cocky now, okay?" she asks, looking around the dark and desolate ruins of the Darkworld. "But yes, it appears that the threat level in the region is pretty low. We've got a pretty short night ahead of us."

"Class 3 will probably be hunting down the region's guardian," Rei yawns. "But oh man, everything else here looks like total weak-sauce. It would be nice to fight someone that's at least a little bit of a challenge..."

"Miss Arisato, you shouldn't rush into danger!" Isamu maintains. "It would tear me up to see you get hurt!"

"How could I get hurt?" Rei brags. "For one, I could take on the region guardian by myself if I wanted. And secondly, don't I have the greatest hero of all backing me up, Isamu?"

"Why yes, you're right!" Isamu replies, oblivious to the fact that Rei was teasing him. "I am here to protect, and to cut through countless waves of foul enemies in order to do it!"

"Just make sure you don't hurt yourself," Akira warns Isamu. "I'll keep an eye on Rei, but I can't watch over the both of you."

"Well, with this little threat I think it's safe to break into two scouting teams!" Saki exclaims, confidently folding her arms. "I'll led one group, and Ryoji can lead the other."

"You know Saki, I'd start to argue you were guilty of nepotism," Kosuke remarks, "But Ryoji's actually the second most capable leader around here."

"Am... am I the first?" Saki asks, unsure.

"Yes."

"Phew!" Saki breathes a sigh of relief. "That's good to know! Okay Ryoji, I'll let you assemble your team first! We won't be facing any real danger by the looks of things, but hey, at least we'll get some good practice in!"

Saki stretches out. "Okay then! Everybody else, follow me!"

Before taking off with the rest of the group, she approaches you and plants a kiss on your lips. "Be careful, jellybean."

"You too, Sak."

Saki leads the rest off the class off in one direction, as you see Rei crossing her arms. "Damn, I was hoping to be with Saki's team..."

"Why? Are you suddenly Saki's biggest fan?" you ask.

"No!" Rei protests, "It's just been a while since I've been on a mission with her. How can she be my rival if I never get a proper chance to compete with her? I wanted to break out into angel form right in front of her just so I can rub it in her face!"

"Miss Arisato, you attained your angel form?" Isamu genuinely asks in amazement.

"N-no... but I'm working on it!" Rei asks. "Just you wait, I'll get there before anyone else. Just got to keep pushing myself..."

Akira gives a worried look to you as you and the rest of the group press on.

"Uuuu..." Hoshi gives that low groaning sound again. "Angels..."

"I understand this has you worried," Reiji mutters. "It's okay. I never heard any word of archangels during my time with The Order... it could all just be a myth. Don't be frightened, Hoshi... okay?"

Reiji is trying to take a gentle hand with Hoshi for once. That's good to see. Moving on, you see that Sayeka is calmly holding the hand of a dishevelled Chihiro. Judging by the redness of her eyes, you can tell that she's been crying all day. Still hasn't recovered from the rejection at the hands of her grandmother, no doubt.

Meanwhile, Nariko is throwing her arm over Hiro's shoulder. "I hear you were helping out Seishiro with his lady problems!"

Hiro nods. "Yes, your advice was very useful. Glad I could help out my friend! I really hope Seishiro listens to the advice..."

"Oh, you're just a regular matchmaker!" Nariko laughs. "But have you ever put thought into finding a girl for a certain other someone?"

"Reiji?" Hiro asks. "I think he's busy with studies..."

Nariko chuckles to herself, as Akira turns to you. "What's our order of business?" she asks. "Hunt down the guardian, or focus on smaller opponents?"

>Let's take out the weaker hordes of enemies. Class 3 can handle the larger stuff.

Rei yawns. "Boring! Can't we do something a little more exciting?"

"No," you reply. "Sorry if I'm making this trip into the vast hellscape of the Darkworld a little more boring than it usually is."

Rei stretches out, leading to Isamu not so inconspicuously checking out her behind. "Fine... guess I can't complain. We've got that simulation room now if I want some real intense training!"

You press on through the dark ruins in the Darkworld with the rest of the group, readying your gauntlet. As you do, Akira approaches you from behind. "I'm worried about Rei."

"When aren't you?" you ask.

"True..." Akira admits. "But this time my concern in more warranted. Ever since discovering the potential existence of these angel forms, Rei has begun to push herself more and more. Isamu has noticed it too, but even he's having trouble getting her to listen. We're worried she's going to end up hurting herself again."

"I'll keep an extra eye on her," you reply. "But I wouldn't worry too much. It's just the immediate excitement at the idea of an angel form that has her like this... she'll calm down and think more rationally soon enough... probably... I hope. I'm not an expert on how Rei's brain works."

Akira nods as the group presses on, before you are stopped in your tracks by Sayeka. "Ghouls up ahead," she warns. "About fifteen of them in total. We can easily get the drop on them from this position."

Sayeka's foresight has given you a good advantage over the darkworlders. Getting the drop on them like this, you'll be able to get an extra set of attacks in before the ghouls can do anything. Pressing on, you find the large cluster of the ghouls hanging around one of the ruins, and rush in with the group to attack them.

You set off into action, getting the surprise attack in on the ghouls. Isamu begins to rattle on about heroism and the power to defeat the dark forces of evil. You stay a good distance away from the ghouls as you let loose with a set of fireworks, pumping into one of the ghouls from a distance. It topples over, but remains alive. Sayeka readies one of her knives and, using her vision to predict the location of the downed ghoul, finishes it off with a handy throwing knife.

Reiji and Hoshi get to blasting away at the ghouls with magic. Hoshi lets loose with a fireball on one of the ghouls, launching it forward but not taking it out, leaving room for Reiji to finish it off with a handy lightning bolt through the chest. Meanwhile, Hiro is readying his shields in order to protect the two spellcasters and Sayeka for when the ghouls are ready to attack.

Chihiro may not be in the happiest place, but she's ready and willing to take out some enemies. Using her speed and manoeuvrability, she finds herself directly behind the ghouls as she stabs at one of them, taking it down. Rei also uses her speed to her advantage, rushing up and slicing one of the ghouls in half like it was made of paper. She smiles smugly as Akira comes up behind her, planning to cleave another of the ghouls. She unfortunately misses, but the ghoul is soon flanked by Nariko, who stabs at it with precision, taking it out also.

With that round of battle, ten ghouls remain, though they still haven't gathered themselves. This allows you to get in another round of attacks before they can even get on the offensive.

"Come forth my friends!" Isamu declares. "Together, we shall smite this threat of evil, and rise as heroes!"

With Isamu giving his speech, you run to the front in an attempt to sucker punch one of the ghouls. It works, as your gauntlet meets with the back of the ghouls head, knocking it down with tremendous fury. The ghouls collapses, it's head a pile of mush when it lands, causing you to look at you fist in amazement. Must be a little bit of residual power left over from when you last summoned The Stranger or something.

Sayeka throws another knife at a ghoul, but appears to have miscalculated, flinging wildly off-target of the creature before letting out a sigh. Reiji however manages to take down the ghoul she missed with a well-placed lightning bolt, while Hoshi takes down yet another with a powerful fireball. Chihiro is in the midst of the group, and it ducking at weaving among the ghouls and the magic attacks in order to swipe at another Ghoul, taking it out with relative ease. Nariko attempts much of the same, but end up being caught by a ghoul and knocked back with a swipe from the creature.

As Hiro keeps up the shields, Rei slashes down another Ghoul, while Akira makes up for her earlier miss by bringing her bayonet down hard on a ghoul, cleaving it in two.

With that assault, only four ghouls remain, but they appear angry, each one moving to attack a different target. Chihiro, Rei, Akira and Nariko are the ones who find themselves being attacked by the ghouls.

The ghouls move on the attack, as Chihiro, Akira and Nariko are all able to dodge their slow, sluggish attacks. The only one who doesn't, to your surprise, is Rei, who seems to have gotten over-confident in her battle, and neglected the ghoul creeping up on her. It swipes, as she finds herself being clawed at by the ghoul. She speeds back to the rest of the group and to safety, but she's already been hurt by the creature.

"Miss Arisato! Are you okay?" Isamu asks.

"Dammit..." she mutters. "Don't worry about me, Isamu! I'll be fine!"

She holds her arm, grimacing in pain as blood flows out of her.

You shake you head, realising the trouble she appears to be in, but knowing that Hiro should be able to handle it. Now's the time to move on the attack once more.

"Those foul fiends have dared to harm the beautiful Miss Arisato, a Goddess among Goddesses! They must pay for their foul deeds!" Isamu yells out.

Hiro rushes over to Rei and begins to patch her up. "There you are, Rei!" He exclaims, quickly healing her wounds. "Now, please try to take it a little easy from now-"

Before Hiro can finish, Rei has already sped back into action, cutting down the ghoul that attacked her with expert authority. Akira looks worried by Rei's determination, but is perfectly willing to follow things up with an attack on another ghoul, cutting it in two. Reiji takes down yet another with a lightning bolt, while the final ghoul is left alone, a target to be ganged up on by attacks from yourself, Sayeka and Nariko to finish it off.

Once they last ghoul falls, Rei calmly dusts off her hands. "Well, there was at least a lot of them to begin with... it was an okay work-out, I guess..."

"Miss Arisato, how is your wound?" Isamu asks, rushing to inspect his friend's wound.

"It's fine!" Rei protests, pulling her arm away from him. "Hiro patched it up fine, stop worrying about me."

"Well, I want you to know how much I-"

"Care for me," Rei finishes. "I know. You don't have to say it all the time. I get it."

"Oh..." Isamu mutters, prompting Rei to bite her bottom lip.

"Geez, I'm sorry Isamu," Rei sighs. "I... I like it when you tell me that. I just want you to know I'm fine, and you don't have to worry."

Isamu nods with a smile, as you note the darkworld melting around. Short one tonight, just as Saki predicted.

"Man, Class 3 worked too fast on that guardian!" Akio protests as you arrive back in homeroom. "I didn't even get to break a sweat! Oh well... at least we have a simulation room now!"

With the Darkworld closed up for the night, you decide to get a good night's sleep, grabbing Saki by the hand and returning to your dormroom.

Rei has Akira and Isamu by her side, she should be fine, and you're not one to study until the very last minute, if at all. Instead, you find yourself preferring to do something you haven't quite got the chance to get around to in a while.

Looking over at the sleeping Saki in the bed next to you, you give her a light pat on the butt before rising out of bed. You're not going to bother texting Ken. After all, he's right above you. You tap lightly on the edge of the top bunk, trying hard to wake Ken, as he snoozes hugging into her own girlfriend. "Hey pal, you ready to go fishing?"

Ken groans as he rolls over in bed to face you, before giving a groggy nod. "Sure thing. Just give me a second." Ken leans in close to the sleeping Nanami and begins to whisper in her ear, lightly kissing her cheek between every sentence. "I love you. I love you more than anything else in the world. You light up my life in a way that words can't describe. You're perfect. You're amazing. You're all I could ever want."

Ken smiles as he hops out of bed. "Sorry about that. Kinda mushy, I know... but it's a morning ritual."

"You say that to her every morning?" you ask. "Wow, now I feel like I've gotta do the same with Saki."

"Don't worry about it," Ken chuckles. "I say it to Nanami because I really, really need her to know it's true. You don't have to do the same with Saki."

The two of you grab your equipment and make your way to the small pond behind the dorms. As he casts off, Ken sits down and lets out a sigh. "Birthday tomorrow."

"Looking forward to turning 17?" you ask.

"Kinda," Ken shrugs. "I don't think I'll feel much different. Day after my birthday, I'll be travelling home to introduce Nanami to my mom."

"That sounds cool."

"I hope she likes her," Ken explains. "My mom's a nice woman, but I don't think she'll... get Nanami. She might think she's weird, and not be willing to give her a chance beyond that."

"I'm sure she'll be a fan," you re-assure him. "Everyone loves Nanami."

"I... I also got a birthday letter from my dad," Ken sighs.

You let out a sigh as well. "What did it say?"

"Vague stuff," Ken explains. "Hey son, happy birthday, sad I couldn't be there... he makes it sound like he's on vacation, not prison. But... I don't know, after all these letters I've been getting recently... I feel like I should write back. Probably a bad idea. What do you think?"

>At least sit down and think about what you want to write him

"Huh..." Ken pauses in thought. "I guess that I should do that... okay. Let me think over all the stuff I'd write to my dad in a letter. First off, I'd mention the school. I'd mention all the friends I've made. I'd bring up you, and Nanami too of course. I think my dad would like her, he was a big fan of pirate movies. Always wanted to have his own boat too... I'd tell him I miss him... maybe. I don't know. Do I miss my dad?"

You shrug, unable to give an answer.

"Yeah... it's complicated," Ken sighs. "I guess it's just something I'll have to work out on my own alone. But for now... I miss my dad as I knew him, at least. I'd tell him that. I'd tell him I'm doing well, I think I've got a good head on my shoulders... that I almost became an angel..."

"Yeah, maybe it's best to leave that part out," you chuckle.

Ken laughs back. "I know... it's weird though, right? It's something so bizarre. I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. I mean... I wouldn't have believed it in a million years, but I felt that power. That power that ran through me... The Spirit of Justice..."

"The what?"

"That's one of the names she said, right?" Ken remarks. "Miyoko... I don't know, that title just feels right for me. Maybe it's because I like to believe that my devotion to justice was always something tied to my destiny... but then I'm left wondering if that means it was fate that my dad did what he did and was sent away... and then my head gets all scrambled up. Still... do you think that's me? Am I really destined to become this Spirit of Justice or whatever?"

>I'm still iffy on this angel thing, to be honest.
>But I could definitely see you as this Spirit of Justice.

"Iffy?" Ken asks. "I don't know, Ryoji... I think it's real. I felt it."

"It's not it being real or not that bothers me..." you mutter. "Look, my powers came from an Archdemon, a god of the Darkworld... Rei's powers come from a lesser demon that's slowly killing her the more she uses it. After that, it's hard to believe that any set of powers is completely benevolent. I'm just not putting all my eggs into that basket."

"I guess that's a fair stance to take," Ken shrugs. "But I gotta say Ryoji, after feeling that power flow through me, I can't help but be excited. I want that power, to be able to bring justice to the rest of those demons, to help me protect the ones I love... I guess I just have to work out that last piece, the final part of unlocking that power."

"I'm sure you'll work it out eventually," you smile. "Miyoko said something about pure hearts or whatever, and you've got one of the purest hearts I've ever seen. The stuff you were saying to Nanami this morning is proof enough of that."

"Yeah, I guess so..." Ken nods. "Well, I think it's about time we moved onto other matters. Like the fact that you and Saki had your first time..."

"Heh, I was just waiting for you to bring that up," you chuckle.

"So, how was it?" he asks.

You wave your hand. "Come on man, I didn't ask you how your first time with Nanami went... but if you need to know, it was amazing. One of the best moments of my life. Dammit, I'm going to spend the rest of my life with that girl. Let's just hope we live long ones."

"Well, my first time with Nanami was... short," Ken admits. "But we both had a great time. I made it up to her the next time we were in bed."

"Speaking of," you laugh. "You get the dormroom to yourself tomorrow. What kind of friend would I be if I deprived you of private time with your girlfriend on your birthday?"

You and Ken continue to laugh and joke together, before he decides to bring Nanami into town. As you stretch out, you find a new text on your phone.

Well, you suppose it's about time you stopped slacking off, as Rei would put it. Besides, you're curious to see this new simulation room of Tekina's. You make your way into the nurse's office, opening it up to see Tekina sitting at her desk, pulling at the petals on a flower. "He loves me... he loves me not... he loves me... oh, he loves me not. Well... glad that's settled! Can't argue with the flower! Oh, hello Ryoji! Are you here to check out my simulation room?"

"Yeah," you reply. "I take it that Rei is already in there?"

"Oh, she's been in there since morning!" Tekina explains. "I warned her that the physical wear and tear could be too much and that she shouldn't spend much time in there, but I believe this next session will be her last before she comes out!"

You approach the entrance to the simulation room, where you see Akira hanging out by the door, exhausted and feasting on candy between wheezes. "Took a lot out of you?" you ask.

"Can't keep up..." Akira groans.

"What about Isamu?"

"He collapsed about ten minutes in," Akira explains. "He's resting in bed now."

You step into the simulation room, where you see Akio and Rei recovering after another session. They both seem to be wildly out of breath, Rei moreso.

"Ready for another round, Naito?"

"More ready than you'll ever be," Akio smirks. "To be honest, I think you need to slow down a little-"

"Ha, that's loser talk!" Rei interrupts. "You just can't admit that I'm doing a better job than you! Say what you will about Kobashi as a rival, but at least she's willing to admit defeat!"

As you enter, Rei turns to you with an out-of-breath smile. She coughs wildly, covering her mouth with her hand, before approaching you. "Well, if it isn't the slacker! About time you showed up!"

"You've been at this all day?" you ask.

"Yep!" Rei exclaims. "You should have seen me this morning! This room is amazing. You set the opponents, set the difficulty, and before you know it, you're being warped into a virtual Darkworld, where you can fight whatever the hell you like! You ready to train?"

>Sure, why not? It sounds fun.

>Yikes. Maybe you could use a break, give yourself a chance to rest up and let your muscles acclimate to the improvements, huh?

"A break?" Rei asks, incredulously. "Don't be silly. I gotta keep going, gotta push myself until my muscles give out! Otherwise, I'm never going to reach my full potential."

"Nah, he's right," Akio mutters. "Even my uncle, as crazy as he was, knew the importance of taking breaks. Granted, he spent all of his breaks drinking and screwing, but it's still important to rest the muscles. I was just about to call it a day myself."

Rei impatiently taps her foot rapidly on the ground, before letting out a defeated sigh. "Okay, I get it. I'll take a quick break. Might as well check on Akira and Isamu... that goofball of a man collapsed ten minutes into this whole session. I hope he's okay, he's usually never down that quickly..."

The three of you step out of the simulation room, as Akira looks at Rei with wide-eyes. "You... you left the room?"

"Just for a moment," Rei smirks. "In a few minutes, I swear I'll be right back in there!"

"I suppose that's good enough for now..." Akira mutters under her breath, before approaching Rei with a hug. "Please... take it easy."

"Whatever you say," Rei replies, not taking the pleas all the seriously. "Now, I'm gonna go check on Isamu. I'm sure he's expecting me to come by and visit him while he's in bed. Bet it gives him dirty thoughts too, the pervert."

As Rei walks on, Akio slowly leans into you. "Hey, so... it's not just me that thinks those two are madly in love, right? I mean, it's obvious that she likes him."

"They're only friends," Akira mutters coldly. "He looks after her, and she enjoys spending time with him. They are not together, and never will be."

Uh-huh... sure. Your attention however is drawn by Rei speaking as she reaches the door to the nurse's office. "Whoa... my head's starting to feel a... little woozy," she remarks, giggling a little... before collapsing to the floor.

"Rei!" Akira calls out, rushing to be by her side.

"Oh dear..." Tekina mutters as she checks on the unconscious Rei. "Bring her to a bed. It seems she's pushed herself far harder than she should have."

"Dammit..." Akio mutters, as Akira brings Rei to a bed. "I should have known better than to get the dying girl all competitive with me..."

>It's not your fault. Rei did this herself.
>You should have slowed down, for both your sake and hers.

>It's not your fault. Rei did this herself.

Akio lets out a sigh. "Yeah... I guess so. Still, I could have been a little more sensitive. I just keep forgetting that, no matter how strong she makes herself look, Rei is dying."

"Shut up," Akira snaps. "Stop saying that. She's not dying. She... she's been acting better-"

"She was doing better," Tekina explains, grabbing a clip-board. "But I'm afraid that Rei's condition has taken a sharp decline recently, and her training regiment, which becomes more and more rigorous with each passing day, is not helping matters. This collapse is only a mild case of exhaustion, but we have to make sure she doesn't leave this bed for the next few days."

Akira hangs her head low. "Very well then..." she mutters, as she grabs a chair, moving to be by Rei's side. A familiar sight, one you were witness to constantly during Rei's time in a coma last semester.

With some blankets over Rei and Akira watching over her, you find yourself moving back to the dorms with Akio, in order to be on time for Satomi's birthday celebration.

>Later that day

"Happy birthday Satomi!" a cheerful Hikaru calls out as she hands Satomi a wrapped gift. "Sorry for this one not being as good as yours... I had to arrange it on short notice, because..."

"That's okay!" Satomi smiles as she opens up the gift. "Wow... is this-"

"Your old Red Mask figurine?" Hikaru smiles. "Yeah, I knew it was still in my house somewhere, so after all these years I decided to bring it up and return it to you. See Satomi, now we're finally even. I also got money, just because I thought the figurine wasn't enough for you."

"Aww, thank you so much!" Satomi yells, embracing Hikaru with a hug. "Oh, I missed this!"

"I missed this too!" Hikaru exclaims, getting a little emotional.

After Hikaru comes her brother Shinji, who comes to Satomi with a considerably larger gift. "Here you are," he mutters. "I spent a good bit of money on this one, but from what I've read, it's worth every yen."

"Oh, what is it?" Satomi asks with curiosity as she tears the wrapping paper back.

"It's a new microscope," Shinji casually explains. "From what I remember, you were in need of a better one, and I understand that this is one of the best models on the market."

"Pfft, that's a lame gift..." Seishiro scoffs in derision.

"Wow... this must have cost you a fortune!" Satomi gasps, blushing profusely.

Shinji shrugs. "I don't often spend money. What use would I have for it other than to buy gifts for the ones important to me?"

"Wow, thank you thank you thank you!" Satomi repeats in rapid succession, wrapping her arms around Shinji in a tight and loving hug.

"Okay, that's enough!" Seishiro yells, getting in between them to break things up. "Leave the girl alone, would 'ya Shinji?"

Satomi pouts as she falls back onto the couch. "Oh... did you get me a gift, Seishiro?"

Seishiro hesitates, looking around like a paranoid maniac, before letting out a single, unconvincing scoff. "Heh... n-no! Why would a get a gift for a loser nerd like you? We aren't friends, come on!"

Satomi takes one good look at Seishiro, pauses, then breaks into tears. "Y-you jerk!" she cries. "I... I hate you! Never talk to me again!"

Satomi runs off to her room in a fuss, as Seishiro is left awkwardly calling out to her, a guilty face plastered on him. "W-wait! Cutiebutt, I did get you a... a... dammit..."

"You freaking idiot!" Hikaru yells, punching Seishiro on the arm. "Go fix that! Right now!"

"W-what am I supposed to do?"

"Apologise!" Hikaru yells. "Everyone knows your sleeping with her, you dumbass! Trying to keep the secret just means you made the girl you like cry on her birthday!"

"H-heh, why would I like a nerd like-"

"STOP PRETENDING AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!" Hikaru yells, loud enough to shake the walls.

"Maybe I should talk to her," Shinji suggests. "Satomi listens to me."

"Yeah, and she likes you..." Seishiro mutters in a bitter tone.

>Seishiro, this is your mess. Go talk to her.

"Why would I talk to her?" Seishiro protests. "It's not like I'm her boyfriend or anything! It's not like we spend most nights together kissing and talking about our feelings... and it's not like she makes me feel good about myself, and comforts me when I need her! What do I look like, the kind of guy who would buy a nerd two tickets to a science convention because... because I like her and want to spend more time with her? Pfft, what kind of idiot would I have to be to... to... I'll go talk to her now."

Seishiro rushes out into the hall as Hikaru lets out a sigh. "Honey, your best friend is a complete moron."

"I know babe," Akio nods. "I know... but he's got strong feelings. He'll wise up sooner or later."

You step out into the hall as Seishiro knocks on Satomi's door. "Hey... cutiebutt? It's me, your snugglemuffin. Please... let me in. I'm sorry, I have your real gift right here. Please..."

The door creaks open, and Seishiro enters. As the door closes behind you, you can hear a series of muffled yells between Satomi and Seishiro. You're not one to eavesdrop, but the two are loud enough that you can hear a few snippets of their argument.

"How could you do that to me?!"

"I already said I was sorry!"

"I trusted you! Are... are you ashamed of me?"

"No!"

"Then why do you treat me like-"

"Because I'm ashamed of myself! It has nothing to do with you. I like you... I like you a lot!"

"You... you do?"

And then after that all you can hear is the sounds of thuds, the creaking of a bed and uncomfortably load moaning. You return to the common room, and half an hour later, Satomi and Seishiro rejoin the group, looking very tired, and with Satomi's hair a frayed mess.

"Ahem..." Satomi clears her throat. "I'm happy to inform you all that Seishiro and I have... talked through our issues like adults, and now the two of us can return to... umm... being mild acquaintances and nothing more. We will answer no questions. Let us continue the party."

Neither of the two can stop smiling the rest of the night, often looking over at each-other from across the room and breaking out into giggles. Those two are far from finished with their issues, but it looks like they were able to put them aside for one night.

>The Next Day

Ken's birthday. This is the big one for you, maybe you should get him something in town. As you rise up out of bed, you're greeted with two new messages.

>From: Isamu
Greetings Ryoji Shida! It is I, Isamu Iori! I'm sure you're aware of the terrible news! The beautiful and powerful princess Miss Arisato is bedridden! >Meet with Taka

You decide that Isamu and Rei would be better off having some alone time together... with the added guest of Akira, but still. Those two are more than capable of keeping Rei confined to her bed while she rests. But Taka of all people messaging you... whatever he wants it must be important. It won't be pleasant, but it'll probably be important.

You make your way to the courtyard, where you find Taka hanging out by one of the benches. He's sitting hunched over like he's deep in thought, when you come over and clear your throat. "You needed me for something?"

Taka looks up at you and smirks. "Heh, yeah. I just got out of solitary confinement and I wanted to see how my little buddy was doing."

"That's it?" you ask. "First of all, I'm not little. I'm one of the tallest in school. Secondly, we aren't buddies. We've never been buddies. And thirdly, if that's all you wanted, I'm gonna take off now."

"Come on, is there something wrong with wanting to chat with someone?" Taka chuckles. "You know... I heard about your blonde friend. The sick one... she's in hospital again, right?"

"Yeah."

"Reminds me of when I... uhh... did I ever properly apologise for that? I don't know, probably not... I just screwed around with her friend all summer. Man, that Akira... now there's a woman. Second hottest girl in this dump of a school, if you ask me. Shame it ended so soon, but what's a guy to do?"

Taka rises from the bench and looks out over the courtyard. You look out to where he's staring, and you notice Maro walking along, with the ever-loving Lilo clinging tightly to his arm.

"Look at him," Taka spits. "Look at that stupid ass. Look at his stupid hat. Look at you he won't even pay attention to his stupid girl, when she's clearly the best he'll ever get..."

Taka grunts in anger as he looks away. "Someone sounds bitter," you remark.

"Of course I'm bitter!" Taka yells. "That piece of trash gets to be leader, he gets the hottest girl in school clinging onto him, he gets the respect and adoration of everyone else, and what do I get? All that should be mine, dammit!"

Taka pauses. "You know... I have this recurring fantasy... every night, I dream of just walking up to Maro, and breaking that pretty boy face of his with a single punch. Then Lilo realises what a wimp he is, and realises that I'm the guy she should be shacking up with. Then the rest of Class 3 bow down to me as their true leader."

"That sounds pathetic," you reply.

"I know!" Taka yells. "And the worst part is that I know I could do that. Right here, in real life. I could just walk up to him and take him down, prove I'm the stronger man. I've always been the muscle of class 3, he couldn't stop me. And yet... I don't do it. I let it just stay as a thought in my head. Why is that?"

>You know that beating him won't get you anywhere.

>You know that beating him won't get you anywhere.

Taka huffs. "Yeah... how could I forget. People like Maro for some reason... I don't get it. People call me a asshole, they call me a bully. And you know what? They're right. I'm far from perfect. But that jackass in the cowboy costume is just as bad as me, but people still expect him to be leader! They expect that loser to be in charge? People are stupid. Look at Lilo. I may be bad, but do you think for one second I would treat a lady like that the way he treats her? Just ignoring her all the time? No way! I would parade her around like a trophy, because a woman like that deserves to be admired!"

"And do you show any of this admiration?" you ask.

"Well... no..." Taka admits. "But that's because we have a rapport going on! A little banter, that's all! She rags on me, and I'll wag on her and her crummy boyfriend! She... she'll realise that I'm the guy who could treat her right soon enough... maybe beating Maro up won't help anyone realise that, maybe I won't be placed in charge of Class 3 right away... but I still deserve it."

"Do you?"

"... Maybe."

Taka lets out a sigh as the figures of Maro and Lilo come closer. As they come into view, you see that Lilo is carrying a small box in her free hand. As she approaches Taka, she hands the box over. "Good to see you out of solitary, Taka! Maybe next time you'll think twice before starting a fight with one of the agents!"

"Pft, I never think twice!" Taka laughs.

"That's the problem," Lilo sighs. "Can you at least try to start thinking once? Anyway, we got a gift for you. It's nothing major... just chocolates."

"Huh... thanks, I guess," Taka shrugs.

"Good to have you back Taka," Maro nods.

"Piss off Calamity Jane," Taka fires back.

Maro, unfazed by the insult, simply moves on, Lilo following by his side. She looks back to Taka and gives a small smile and wave as Taka tears open the box. "Heh..." he mutters.

"Something funny?" you ask.

"These chocolates..." Taka laughs. "Way back in my first semester, Lilo and I were study partners. We had about half a brain between us, so they studying proved a challenge... but she was willing to put in the work, and she encouraged me to do it too. We drove each-other crazy during all those study sessions, I'm sure she wanted to tear my head off... but at the end, she gave me a box of chocolates in celebration. It... it was honestly the first time I remember someone being nice to me. I don't exactly inspire people to be nice to me, kinda make it hard for them any chance I get... and still, she went out of her way to get me this. And today... she gets me the same chocolates."

"What's your point?" you ask.

Taka chuckles to himself. "I've decided... I need that woman in my life. I'm going to steal her from Maro."

Before you can protest his decision, Taka marches off to make... preparations? You have no idea what he's planning to do, and frankly you don't really care. Whatever it is, it won't turn out well for him, and now you've got time to focus on other things before Ken's party.

>Buy something for Ken

Well, better last minute than never. Putting aside the business with Taka going insane, you make you way into town, prepared to buy a gift for Ken's birthday. You wander in and out of shops, trying to figure out what the hell would be best for your friend, but you find yourself at a loss. You see plenty of things Ken might like lining the various shop stalls, some DVDs, some fishing rods, but you're just not sure what you should get him. This is why you hate buying gifts, you're forced to sum up your relationship with a person in just a single item. It's difficult. Maybe you should just buy him a simple card with a simple message instead. It's not like he'd mind...

"Having trouble?" a voice from behind you causes you to turn around, revealing one of your classmates.

"Sora? What are you doing here?" you ask.

Sora smiles warmly. "I'm here to purchase a gift for Ken. I often find little need for material possessions, but I understand that it's a good custom to buy something for others on their birthdays. It's simple manners."

"Right..." you mutter, before reaching into your pocket and pulling out your phone. "Well, I think I've got just the person to help me pick out a gift."

You send a simple text out, and within seconds you hear the sound of a voice getting louder and louder. "I'm coming, I'm coming, I'm coming, I'm coming..."

Before you know it, Akemi is sliding to stop her sprint directly in front of the store's doorway. "I'm here!" she exclaims, waving her hands out in a theatrical display. "Ta-daah!"

"I take it you were in town already?" Sora asks.

"Yep!" Akemi laughs. "I was gonna get Ken a birthday gift!"

"Any ideas?" you ask.

Akemi's eyes widen as she catches a glimpse of the store's candy section. She dashes over to it and pulls out a giant marshmallow... a GIANT marshmallow, almost the size of her. She hugs into it tight, smiling proudly. "I made my choice!"

"You know it's a gift for Ken, right?" you reply. "Besides, that thing probably cost a lot. Pretty sure it's supposed to just be display only."

"I can haggle!" Akemi laughs. "Call me hagglekemi, the best merchant in town!"

Akemi rushes to the registry till, as Sora lets out a small laugh. "Oh... she has boundless energy. It never fails to bring a smile to my face."

"Yeah, me neither."

"So, have you decided on your gift yet?" Sora asks.

>I'll get him a DVD he'll like

Ken likes his superhero shows, his Kamen Rider, his Super Sentai... it couldn't hurt to get him some more of the stuff he loves. You make your way over to the video section and begin to file through the DVDs on display. "He's got that one... he has that one... and that one... oh, the entire first season of Red Mask, he'll like that."

You grab the dvd and make your way up to the cash registry. As you do, you see Akemi forking over some cash for the giant marshmallow and making her way to the entrance. "What? How did you?" you manage to blurt out in shock.

"Hagglekemi strikes agaaaaaaaaain!" She declares with glee.

"What? This is the first time you've haggled!"

"Hagglekemi striiiiiiiiiiiikes!" she corrects herself.

You let out a sigh as you buy the dvd, while Sora decides to grab the fishing rod you had your eye on earlier, buying that for Ken as well. "I had difficulty selecting a gift myself," Sora smiles. "By buying the dvd, you made the process much easier for me."

"If you're so against material possessions, where did you get the money for that in the first place?"

"Before they passed, my parents left me a large sum of money," Sora explains. "Money that I've kept safe, and only rarely dipped into. My younger brother was left a similar amount, but spent it all fairly quickly. He's rash, and often doesn't think ahead. Still, he is my brother, and I love him, no matter what he may think of me."

"Ryoji..." Akemi mutters.

"Something wrong, monkey?"

"Please take this marshmallow... my stomach's rumbling and I'm tempted to eat it."

>LATER THAT DAY

"Happy birthday, pal."

The way Ken's face lights up as you hand him his gift is more than enough to put a smile on your own face.

"Wow, the first season of Red Mask?" Ken laughs. "I love this show! I always wanted to get a good copy of the earlier seasons, before the newer animation studio took over. And hey, official commentary from the original voice of Red Mask! I'm telling you, nobody captured the spirit of that character better than Shuncho Abe! Thanks man!"

>Anything for you pal. I love 'ya, Ken.

Ken turns red, somewhat embarrassed by the affection. "Thanks man... that means a lot. I love you too."

You pull Ken in tight for a hug, the both of you smiling and laughing, when you're interrupted by a yelling Rini. "Ugh, just make out already!"

The two of you chuckle as you pat Ken on the shoulder. "Happy birthday."

"Oh, be sure to give my thanks to Saki!" Ken adds. "I hope she's feeling better soon."

Yeah... Saki arrived at the party, gave Ken a present and a hug, then retired for the night, saying she wasn't feeling well. You wanted to stay by her side, but she insisted that it was just the beginnings of a minor cold, and that you should spend the night with your best friend.

"Can I just say something?" Ken says, standing in the middle of the room. "I don't mean to get all sentimental with you guys... but seeing all of you here, playing, laughing... generally being the best friends a guy could ask for... I just want to thank all of you. You guys are the greatest, and I am so proud to be part of this class."

"Ugh, just make out already!" Rini repeats, making less sense this time, prompting Ken to chuckle.

Nanami approaches Ken and leans up to his ear, a seductive smirk on her face. "I think it's time for my second gift to you..." she mutters, before whispering something in his ear that leaves him even redder than you could possibly imagine. She grabs Ken by the hand and leads him into your dormroom. "Well, I think that's my cue to call it a night too," you yawn. "Hoshi, did Saki tell you that we'd be staying in your room tonight?"

"Y-yes..." a strangely blushing Hoshi mumbles. "B-but it's okay... I'm staying in Nariko's room..."

"Huh? Why?"

"Y-you'll s-see..." Hoshi replies.

You have no idea what that means, but whatever. You yawn again as you make your way into the hallway and towards the room to Saki's door. You open up, and are greeted with... wow. Saki, in the middle of the room, wearing... that.

"Saki?" you asks, amazed by the incredibly revealing underwear. Saki's is bright red as you walk in, clearly not prepared enough for you actually seeing her like this. "What's this about?"

"Did you really think I wouldn't know, Ryoji?" Saki replies, slightly covering herself up in embarrassment, but only succeeding in accentuating some of her features. "Ken's not the only one with a birthday today. He shares a birthday with a certain other member of class... his roommate in fact."

Dammit... you didn't forget that today was your birthday. You just didn't want anyone to know, because you didn't like the idea of them throwing a party for you. You certainly didn't want to make Ken share his birthday with anyone else. You wanted it to be your buddies special day, and to just celebrate your birthday in private... but you didn't have to tell Saki that. No, this is the most private a celebration as you can get.

"Now, just where did you get something like that?" you remark.

"Chihiro gave it to me," Saki explains. "She... she doesn't know it's for a special occasion, so now I just seem lewd!"

You chuckle as Saki places her head in her hands out of shame. "Heh, pretty sure it's lewd whatever day it is."

"Do... do you like the gift, Ryoji?"

"Of course I do, Sak..." you smile. "Whether it's my birthday, Christmas, or just any day... you're all I could ever want. The kitty underwear is a nice bonus, though."

"Ryojiiiiiiiii!" Saki squeals. "... Happy Birthday."

>Later that night

"Hey Ryoji... how's it going?"

"Stranger?" you ask, awakening in what appears to be some sort of kitchen area. Stranger is sitting at the table, munching away on a bowl of some cereal. Looking at the box, it's something called Ryoji-O's. Clever. "Where the hell am-"

"Relax, you're asleep," Stranger assures you. "You're still in bed with Saki, and you're free to smack that nice ass when you wake up tomorrow morning. I've just called you to a little meeting in your head."

"This is my head?" you ask. "You made a lounging area inside my brain?"

"It beats the old dark empty void, doesn't it? Look, I just called you here to show you something."

"And what is that?"

"That thing I've been working on... I've been at it non-stop to have it ready by today, but here we are... your gift." Stranger nods as he rises from the chair and places the bowl atop the table. "Now, I don't know how the gift is going to react when called her. It may not be fully aware of it's surroundings at first, but... I'm gonna bring her in."

Stranger claps his hands together, as the door behind him opens. In through the door walks in a girl with white-hair, and a face that is both unfamiliar and all too familiar to you.

"Where... where am I?" Nina mutters in dazed confusion. "R-Ryoji...? But, how can you be... oh no, why is... why is the demon still here? What... what happened? Last I remember, I had you..."

"Welcome back to the world of the... un-living Nina," Stranger welcomes Nina, ignoring her slowly freaking out due her new surroundings. "And Ryoji... happy birthday."

It's going to be awkward as fuck, especially when Ryoji's trying to concentrate in class and GhostNina and The Stranger are doing it.

>Bonus PQ
Definitely Ryoji, he got all the waifus this year.

Also enjoy a shitty edit I made of The Stranger's face when he reveals GhostNina.
