Another morning dawns, a light hue of light bringing the sky alive like a beautiful canvas of orange and pink, and the tribe begins to stir. Pulling on a thicker tunic than usual to steer away the sharp winds that the cold season is bringing in, you step from your humble shelter and look out over the tribe.

Your tribe.

You are the leader of a primitive tribe which finds its home on the bank of the Great River. Once a nomadic band, the families of the tribe recently settled for a more permanent way of life solely at your request.

This quest is a tribal society civ-management story, though there will be some roleplaying elements, too. Most of the gameplay will occur in Turns, each representative of a month, and broad strategic actions will need to be taken to steer the fate of the tribe.

Micro actions will be taken sometimes, too, when specific events call for you to take the role of your leading character and interact with members of the tribe and other world elements on a more intimate scale.

You are the first of you name and the first true leader of this tribe. Your ambitions are simple - to grow the tribe, helping it prosper and keeping it safe, while also preserving your name by starting a family to help guide the tribe in the future.

As leader of the this tribe you must make a few decisions - who you are and what you're good at. Let's start with the basics...

1. Who are you?
[Name], the [Man/Woman] leader of the [Your people/tribe name]
>>
>>895687
Brock the male leader of the Stone-Breakers
>>
Toral, male chieftain of the Stream Runners
>>
>>895830
>>895845

Since is quiet hour, first of these to get a second will be the decider.
>>
>>895830
I'm for the stone breakers but I want a charter named Munta, the head hunter of the tribe.
>>
>>895830
This sounds good.
>>
Oh shit, now we have a second for both. The stalemate continues
>>
Ok, going to try to make everyone happy!

You are Munta, head hunter of the Stone Breakers.

Next up...

2. What is your core attribute?
(Choose one)

[Wits - you are intelligent, strategic and charismatic]
[Strength - you are a warrior and builder, strong in body and mind]
[Aura - you are blessed, connected to the spirit world]
>>
>>895915
>Aura- you are blessed, connected to the spirit world

>>895930
>>895949

Very well. You are Munta, lead hunter of the Stone Breakers, blessed by the spirits of your ancestors and known for your deep connection to the spirit world.

3. What skill path would you like to pursue do you have?
(Choose one - can be changed later)

[Path of Man (Crafting) - eg foraging, tool making, fire building]
[Path of the Spirit (Spirituality) - eg. totem casting, rejuvination]
[Path of the Cave Bear (Hunting) - eg. animal training, fishing, combat]
[Path of the Red Eagle (Endurance) - eg. alertness, direction sense]
>>
>Path of the Cave Bear
We are the tribe's top hunter after all
>>
>>895953
>[Path of the Spirit (Spirituality) - eg. totem casting, rejuvination]
>>
>>895962
>>895959

Anyone got a tie breaker between these two?
>>
>>895959
[Path of the Spirit (Spirituality) - eg. totem casting, rejuvination]

Would be a waste of our boosted stat otherwise.

Ok great.

You are Munta, lead hunter of the Stone Breakers, blessed by the spirits of your ancestors and known for your deep connection to the spirit world.

You currently walk the Path of the Spirit, learning much about TOTEM CASTING in your childhood, the art of using totem stones to evoke spirits into magical abilities and events. More recently you have been experimenting with the art of REJUVINATION, using the spirit world to help sick or wounded tribe members recover.

A few quick notes on mechanisms:

FOOD is consumed once a month/turn. I will adjust the figure to match the changing population of the tribe, so it's always an easy ratio of 1 Food = 1 Month.

It is assumed the tribe is always doing SOME kind of hunting and forraging, however, focussing a turn's action on these tasks will ensure your FOOD supply goes up.

POPULATION increases once a year, for simplcity. This does not count the births of the year. Rather, it is a measure of how many individuals have come of age (10-12 years old) and can contribute to daily life.

POPULATION will decrease on a regular basis also, likely once a year.

POPULATION can both decrease and increase as a direct outcome of special events.

Warriors - fight for and protect the tribe
Elders - offer safely advice and wisdom
Hunters - provide food for the tribe (incl. fishing and foraging)
Fire-Keepers - healers and children rearers
Crafters - buildings and fixers

Your PATH dictates the kinds of actions you have available to respond to different events and develops the Tribes abilities and skills.

You can change your Path at any time, but only once per 3 months/turns.

Each Turn you get two choices - an action that gives the tribe it's direction for the month, and a more intimate kind of action that helps you develop your character and spread their knowledge throughout the tribe.

Each turn you also have the possibility of encountering special events, which will be dealt with between turns through micro events. These could be roleplaying scenarios, combat, or simple decision making.

As more rules come to light I'll post about their intricacies.

And of course - feel fre

Let's go!

r.The Stone Breakers find their home on the eastern bank of the Great River. The bank itself is wedged between the rushing waters and a dense forest. On the opposite side of the river, accessed best by some shallows to the south of the tribes camp, are expansive grasslands overshadowed by mighty mountain peaks that seem to be white on top all year round.

It is nearing the end of the Harvest. The Chill, a colder and usually rainy season, is just around the corner.

As the weather turns colder the Stone Breaker hunters find themselves turning to the bordering forests for food - it is dangerous to hunt wild animals in these harshening conditions, not to mention that most of the herds have journeyed south in a vain attempt to escape the cold.

The trees are bountiful, thankfully, and as The Chill rolls in the tribe finds itself with plentiful food for the coming cold months. [+2 FOOD]

While the hunters gather food, Munta turns his attention to the religious ceremony and practice of the tribe. After discussion among some of the most spiritual within the tribe, and the Crafters, it is decided a great totem pole bearing the creatures of the Path as figureheads (Man, Spirit, Cave Bear and Red Eagle) will be constructed within the small village. As The Chill begins and the air grows cold, harsh winds begin seeping through the primitive huts and lean-to's that stand by the rivers bank. It's decided that better accommodations are needed and the Crafters of the tribe get together and begin plotting.

It's decided that producing such structures will likely take longer than a month, but the group begin work. Due to the worsening weather, the construction efforts are slow and constantly hindered. By the end of the month, supplies are running low, but a few grander homes now stand where the old once did - mud huts, reinforced by intricate wooden frames and external supports. Inside, the cold is barely noticeable (under a thick fur, of course).

[NEW PROJECT - IMPROVED HOMES]

[This project will need to be completed.]

As the cold of The Chill overwhelms the village, Munta gathers together like minded tribes folk and begins a long series of ceremonies to contact the Spirit World. So blessed as he is, the tribal leader has an easy time doing so and word travels quickly around the tribe of how strong his aura is.

Despite this, Munta knew it would be no simple task to summon a patron spirit to watch over his tribe and expects much time and mental effort will be needed.

Munta continues his work throughout the coldest part of the month, falling ill at one point due to the immense amount of mental and spiritual investment. One evening, however, during a fever dream, he stumbles upon the ethereal form of a white deer.

"You are strong, Munta, and I can help guide you with my speed and wisdom if you so choose to bond your tribe with me." The deer is indeed wise, its aura strong, but seems shy and without much vigour to it.

"If you wish to pursue a bond, bring me the blood of a young wild beast from beyond the waters by the end of your Blossom, and your tribe and I shall be one."

The vision vanishes.

Munta reports back to his close friends and the elders, leaving the decision to appease the great deer for when the weather has improved.

[This project can be restarted to find a new Patron, or the prerequisites met in later Turns]

The rest of the tribe spends the month struggling to keep fires burning within the small huts and lean-to's around the village. With harsh winds against them, and only a handful of wind proof structures, the effort goes mostly in vain. As the month draws to a close and the winds quiet a little, a handful of tribe folk come to Munta with thanks for the warmth that was offered, as little as it may have been.

Unfortunately, during the tireless construction of these self contained fire pits, a Crafter and his brother both passed to the spirit world after becoming quite ill from the cold and unable to breath.

I don't think we should go with a shitty deer spirit though. We need something better like a porcupine or a honeybadger since combat will likely be a thing.

[Going with these options as we seem to be at an impasse and they got in first]

As the cold months slowly draw to a close the village sets its focus on the river - its a close, plentiful food source, and mostly safe. From the protection of the small fishing huts, the Hunters gather spears and knives and delve into the river in pairs, seeking the small, juicy creatures that swim there.

[+3 FOOD] (forgot to minus last Turn)

Munta, meanwhile, decides that the Hunters are simple too undermanned and will need help in the coming Blossom to ensure the tribe takes full advantage of the changing seasons. With spears and knives, Munta and several of the other tribes folk begin training up some of the younger men and women who spend most of their days sitting by the fire or preparing food.

The training is slow, though a few tribes folk begin to show some promise by the month's end. The majority, though, will need signficant work in the future before they join the hunting parties.

[+2 HUNTERS]

The tides of nature are turning once more and the cold winds and rains of The Chill slowly vanish. Blue skies and a warm change coming in from the west beckons The Blossom as the forest comes alive.

With the Blossom bringing warmer days and beautiful scents on the breeze, the Stone Breaker crafters get to work finishing up their pre-Chill work to improve the quality of homes within the village. Alas, only a few more structured are reinforced when the raw building materials run out. A fully fledged expedition into the forest will be needed to replenish timber supplies.

[This project will need to be completed]

Munta, meanwhile, gets his Crafters together during the evenings and talks theory around the bonfire with anyone who will listen. Many tribes folk, especially those already benefiting from these improved homes, are eager to help and learn. Four individuals are ready to pick up tools by the end of the month, were there resources to build anything with.

The tribe sets out, day after day, in force - every man, woman and child able to help sets forth into the forest searching for adequate building supplies. A light Blossom rain is welcomed by most as the weather begins to heat up.

After several weeks of this rushed collection, it's decided the supplies are in good shape. Many, exhausted by the long days of hauling timber and bowls of mud and clay, chat excitedly around the evening fire about what grand creations they can use the new resources for.

[+12 SUPPLIES]

While the resource foraging takes place, Munta leaves on an expedition of his own. For the entire month he is gone, traveling south to the shallows of the river and crossing the great expanse of water with much struggle.

The plains beyond are seeing the return of the great herds - creatures the tribe have come to call Auroch. Great cows with curving horns, these relatively docile beasts are a great source of food and fur. They aren't entirely defenceless, however.

Alone and armed with a humble spear and two stone knives, Munta went about pleasing the deer spirit from his vision and located a young calf among the herd. For days he stalked the juvenile beast, picking his moment carefully. He managed to capture the thing, wounding it enough to draw it away from the herd, and killed it there on the plains to gather its youthful blood.

Exhausted, but unharmed, Munta returns to the village by the end of the month with a small pouch of drying, calf auroch blood. He undertakes a short ceremony by the totem pole one night, using his aura to reach out for the deer, and hopes that his offering is not in vain.

Special Event
One evening a young man, barely an adult, comes to Munta for advice. While venturing into the trees up river some way, out of sight of the camp, he came across an odd shimmering object within the treeline of the forest. Investigating, he found a smooth, yellow pebble that fills the palm of his hand. It's edges have strange markings on them, ancient inscriptions, and the stone felt odd to touch.

He shows the thing to Munta, an oddity neither of them have ever seen before, and the tribal leader is bewildered over the way it seems to softly glow, like the embers of a fire.

Munta thanks the young man, who is eager to learn more about the stone, and mulls over what to do with such an odd thing.

Munta sends the young man off, thanking him once more for bringing the intriguing pebble to him, and places the artefact in a small leather bag that he tucks beneath the fur mattress in his hut.

Crafters of the village get busy with the cooler warm days and replenished stockpile of resources, reinforcing all of the remaining homes in the tribe. Some, who have lived in simple lean-to's for the past 6 months, are now barely able to comprehend how much added safety and protection their families have. Upon completion there is a night of celebratory dancing around the bonfire.

[ACCOMMODATIONS = Reinforced Mud and Timber Huts]

Munta spends these final days of The Blossom training up new Fire Keepers in the tribe. He spends many days and nights going through the finer details of preparing meals, treating wounds, creating medicines and caring for the young members of the tribe. While the lessons are comprehenisve, the subject matter is quite complex and many of the listening lose track time and again.

By the end of the month, however, there are three new Fire Keepers tending to the village.

[+3 FIRE KEEPERS]

(There are now only 2 untrained members of the tribe)

The tides of nature are turning once more and the cool breezes of The Blossom are slowly replaced by the hot, humid days of The Heat. The sun begins to burn and the days last longer.

Ok, writing. After this Turn I might give it a short break and see if we ca gather more players.

The Hunters of the tribe head out for days at a time, venturing south down the Great River to some plains they know to be thriving with life. While there are no aurochs this side of the river, at least that the Stone Breakers have encountered, there are known to be deer and occasionally wild dogs grazing/hunting in the tall grasses there.

After several weeks on the hunt, the band bring back great slabs of wild animal meat and boast of their hunting prowess - nobody was injured and every Hunter landed at least one blow against their prizes during the expedition.

[+2 FOOD]

Munta, taking time to recouperate after his great journey across the river, spends many days in the company of the village elders to discuss the shiny pebble the young boy had found.

The elders have never once encountered such an artifact before, though their study of its shape and its glow have both of them agreeing that it must be a gift (or curse) from the spirit world. They suggest utilising it in the future, perhaps having the hunters or crafters take it with them on expeditions.

"Such a mysterious object no doubt has some spiritual bonds we best discover, if we can.
Trial and error, my dear boy, will unfrotuantely need to be our method for now."

Special Event
The coming of The Heat has been particularly rough and the tribe folk were not ready for the impact the burning sun would have on their foraged stores. Much of the fresh fruit and roots have gone bad from long days of sitting idle in the heat.

[MOOD DECREASES due to LOSS OF FOOD]

Special Event
During one restless night, sticky with humidity from the intense Heat, Munta finds himself dreaming once more of the white deer. It looks pleased and comes to him in a vision that seems to cool his body and replenish his aura.

"You have done well and proven yourself true to me. I will bond with you, Munta of the Stone Breakers, and your tribe. I will guide you with my wisdom of nature, spirits and animals."

Munta is happen to awaken the following morning, announcing to the tribe the coming of their new patron, the White Deer.

For the last weeks of The Heat, the Stone Breakers set off once more into the nearby forests to gather more materials. Growing their humble, river side village - and, specifically, keeping it safe - has become a priority.

The work is laborious and slow going, but the gathering goes well. By the dying days of The Heat, the village is well stocked for the coming Harvest months.

[+10 SUPPLIES]

While the gathering proceeds, Munta spends much of his time meditating and treating with the deer spirit Rhodesia, usually late at night before the totem pole.

"You come to me for advice and assistance in helping your people. I can offer all I can, as you have only been faithful to me."

The great deer spirit imparts new wisdom on Munta regarding several things, usually in the form of lucid visions as he sleeps. It takes some time to put together the cryptic messages, though by the end of the month the tribal leader is sure it was Rhodesia who sent him such wisdom.

Munta has discovered, through direct congress with the spirit realm, a design for creating a special hut that the tribe can use to smoke their meats! Doing so would significantly help preserve them, making fishing and hunting far more beneficial to the tribe in the long term.

Munta has also encountered a vague mention of the glowing, yellow pebble in one of his visions. He believes that, with experimentation, he can discover its purpose by using it in the river.

Thanks again for those who played. I really enjoyed Munta's journey so far.

My schedule is tight so there isn't a lot of time for me to QM, but I hope to return this time next week.

I will make myself known on twitter (do QMs still do that?) here: https://twitter.com/aus_qm

Archiving this thread too. Here's hoping we can keep the quest moving.
