File: Paper Mario.png (81 KB, 320x165)

81 KB PNG
This is a quest that takes place within the universe of Paper Mario, specifically the first two games, in a period of relative peace. You're not Mario, but if you play your cards right, you might end up as famous as the brothers. Collect the seven macguffins, hone your skills as the best at something, or just do sidequests all day - the choice is yours.

At the end of every update, I'll give you a few options to vote on, with a ten minute period to vote. Most times you can write in your own options, but I'll veto it if it won't work or if it's too outlandish. Rolls, when asked for, will be done on a d20. You have three chances to succeed, one roll per person. Rolls are made after the ten-minute voting period. Good luck and have fun!

Current Chapter: Prologue ~ A Wish for Change
Character Sheet: (Will create one by the end of this thread)

>Begin

You wake up, feeling excited yet nervous. This is it. Today is the day you make a change. No more of the same old routine... you hope.

You rise from your bed and anxiously get seated at your desk, assembling a paper and pen. You pause and think about what to write... every good letter starts with solid planning, of course. You decide to start with the basics, and explain yourself and who you are. You are...

>A. A Koopa from Petalburg
>B. A Bob-omb from Fahr Outpost
>C. A Goomba from Rogueport
>D. A Boo from Forever Forest
>E. A Squeek from Dry-Dry Desert
>F. A Toad from the rural Mushroom Kingdom
>G. A Yoshi from Lavalava Island
>H. Something else (specify, most creatures from the first two games are fine)
>>
>>889601
>D. A Boo from Forever Forest
I love Boos.
>>
>>889626
Neat, I'll give this a few more minutes to see if anyone else chimes in
>>

>>889626
You document on your letter, you're a Boo from Forever Forest. You're tired of scaring the one or two people that walk through the forest every year, and spending so much time in isolation. You need a change, and that's why you're writing...

>A. To Tayce T.; you want to become a chef
>B. To The Master; you want to become a martial artist
>C. To the Castle; you want to become a soldier
>D. To the Post Office; you want to become a mailman
>E. To the mushroom shop; you want to become a merchant
>F. To the train station; you want to become a conductor
>G. To Russ T.; you want to become a librarian
>>
>>889668
>A. To Tayce T.; you want to become a chef
All of them sound like fun but being a ghost chef is too good to pass.
Boos can taste food, right?
>>

>>889682
You're writing to Tayce T., the famous chef of Toad Town, asking to apprentice under her. Boos aren't huge culinary experts, due to not having to eat; it's a world yet untapped by your kind, which is a very tantalizing prospect for one seeking change such as you.

Now, the real hard part: selling yourself. How are you going to describe yourself?

>A. You're a tough cookie who never backs down from a challenge
>B. You're a smarty who loves to figure things out
>C. You're a socialite who has no trouble making friends
>D. You're a lucky ghost who never seems to have any real problems
>>
>>889723
>A. You're a tough cookie who never backs down from a challenge
Need to be hardy for ghost in the world of chefs.
>>
>>889723
>>889730
Also going with A.

Also good job on being a Boo, other Grade A choices were a Shy Guy or Puni.
>>
>>889730
>>889765
You describe yourself as tough for a Boo, who never backs down from a challenge. Most people think of Boos as scary and reserved, but you've always been the exception, learning when you were young to deal with your problems by pushing or slapping them instead of spooking them.

You go on to write about a moment you're especially proud of, which is...

>A. That time you uprooted a stump outside the mansion all by yourself (+2 on rolls to push or pull heavy objects)
>B. That time you scared off a horde of Fuzzies from coming near your mansion just by appearance (+2 on rolls to intimidate)
>C. That time you fixed the gate to Gusty Gulch, even though everyone could just fly over it (+2 on rolls to fix things)
>D. Something else (Give an example and the skill it may help in)
>>
>>889765
Oh shit I forgot Shy Guys existed, I would have added that to the poll
>>
>>889770
>C.
Seems to fit our non-give upper attitude, "I DON'T CARE IF WE DON'T NEED IT, STANLEY, IT IS STILL BROKE .".

>>889774
Erh, maybe we can pick a Shy Guy sidekick later.
>>
>>889770
>C. That time you fixed the gate to Gusty Gulch, even though everyone could just fly over it (+2 on rolls to fix things)
>>889774
Hope we can get a Shy Guy friend in the future.
>>889765
Awesome. Another player.
>>
>>889787
>Awesome. Another player.
I'm surprised there aren't a few more people in here, I loved (still love) the first Paper Marios to death. They were good games and had nice settings, mayn.
>>
>C.
I never knew how much I needed this quest till I saw it.
>>
Wait are we one of those 3rd World Mexican Boos or a Normal Boo? >>889668 makes me think we're a normal Boo, but I'm just double checking.
>>
>>889785
>>889787
You recount the time you fixed the gate to Gusty Gulch, which really only matters for non-floaters... of which you almost never have wander that far into the forest. Still, it needed fixing, and you were the only Boo with enough nerve to do it! That's probably applicable to culinary arts somehow.

Next, you go on to describe a difficult situation you've dealt with in the past, which is...

>A. The time you had to defend yourself from Tubba Blubba (Gain Endurance trait, lets you roll 5 times for endurance situations instead of 3)
>B. The time you tried to keep the Super Boots from Mario (Gain the Rhythmic trait, gives you a bonus for attacking the same target consecutively in a fight)
>C. The time you tried to ask out Lady Bow (Gain the Victim trait, makes you more likely to be targeted in a fight)
>>
>>889815
That's up to you guys, esé
>>
>>889817
>A
IRON GHOST WITH A RESOLVE OF STEEL IS A GO. Maybe.
>>
>>889825
To add to that we need a Chef's Hat with "IRON CHEF" wrote across it at some point.
>>
>>889817
>A. The time you had to defend yourself from Tubba Blubba (Gain Endurance trait, lets you roll 5 times for endurance situations instead of 3)
Hmm, the Victim trait could be useful if we went for tank route but still, we're a ghost.

Of course, you describe the time Tubba Blubba famously started gulping down all the Boos in Gusty Gulch, and how you helped hold the line when Mario made his escape to the Windmill to fight his heart. You held that door closed for a solid two minutes... until he busted it down and swallowed you. Still, you held out in that stomach for what seemed like hours until you were miraculously spit up upon his defeat. It hardened you into the iron ghost you are today!

You figure that's good enough for a letter like this. You finish it off with some pleasantries, how you hope to hear back from her soon, and all that stuff. Finally, you go to sign your name...

>A. Booris (male)
>B. Booliet (female)

>Three months later

The sun peaks in the sky, breaking through the trees as you make your way out of always-dark Forever Forest. It's been a challenging three months since Tayce T. took you on as her apprentice, but you've not ever been one to back down from a challenge, and the experience is paying off. You've impressed her with how quickly you've gone from a beginner to a decent chef - especially for someone who doesn't need to eat - and your training is nearly complete, according to her. In fact, today is your final day of training, and she promised she would come up with something hard as your final task at this level, just like you wanted.

As you emerge from the forest, the blue-spotted Toad guard jumps instinctively, but breathes deeply when he realizes it's just you. That's Fice T., the cowardly toad who for some reason guards the entrance to Forever Forest. You've become acquainted with him, since you pass by so frequently, and you're not sure why he sticks with this job. Maybe he's just too lazy to change.

As you approach, he waves at you while catching his breath.

>A. Stop to say hello
>B. Wave and keep going to Tayce T.'s
>C. Scare him for fun
>D. Something else
>>

Even though you're not one for scaring, it's just not in your genes to pass up an opportunity for a spook this easy. You quickly vanish while looking at him, and as he looks around, you appear behind him and say "Boo!", causing him to fall over forward with a shriek.

"Oww... not funny..." He gripes as he collects himself, used to your shenanigans.

You briefly consider telling him to toughen up, but you just shrug and cackle. "Sorry, couldn't resist! Not today!"

Leaving him to recover, you fly off in the direction of Tayce T.'s kitchen, where you've come every day for the last three months to hone your cooking skills. You're not sure what she has in store for you today, but whatever it is, you're more than ready. After a few minutes, you reach the door of her kitchen, your body racing with anticipation.

>A. Knock and enter
>B. Phase through the door with your invisibility

You politely knock on the door before entering, as any senior student would. "Come in," you hear from beyond the door as you enter. Tayce T. smiles warmly at you as she sees you come in, as she chops up some vegetables on a cutting board. She's got a very motherly aura about her, even as your instructor.

"Ahh, Boobert. Are you excited for your final test?"

Tayce T. chuckles lightly. "Yes, of course. But first, let's make sure those first hundred-or-so days of training stuck with you. Now, come look at this..."

She motions you over to a skillet, where various ingredients are laid out around a red mushroom; vegetables, spices, garnishes, all of the highest quality. "First, make this the tastiest mushroom dish of your choosing using all I've taught you!"

With no time to waste, you get right to boiling, and twenty minutes later, you produce a wonderful-smelling pasta with mushroom atop, a dish that the Mario Brothers themselves would die for. Tayce T. seems very pleased with this.

"Okay, next... prepare something to accompany your pasta, with..." she opens a drawer, handing you a mushroom like the one you just turned into Italian food... except mush more dried and withered than the previous one.

You give her a strange look, and she laughs a little. "A true chef can prepare a meal out of the most barely-edible ingredients. You should know this!"

"Why are we packing all this food up?" You ask Tayce T., curious.

"Oh! Well, that's the your final test. You're going to make a delivery of this food."

"To who?" You inquire.

"Oh, just her royal highness, Princess Peach.", she says nonchalantly, putting the pie in its container.

After about ten seconds spent watching Tayce T. pack up the pie you just made, what she said finally processes, and everything gets a little bright. "Wait, WHAT?"

"Did you think your final test was going to be just cooking?", she asks jokingly. "That would be a little predictable, wouldn't it?"

"But, but, when? Where? Why?" You keep talking, trying to buy time for your brain to catch up to your mouth.

"Well," she begins, "Now, the castle, because it's the Princess's lunch time. Any questions?"

"No ma'am!", you reply with nervous gusto. "This is just another challenge for me to overcome!"

She laughs again. "Ah yes, that's the attitude I know." Having finished packing all the food, she starts putting them then in a plastic bag. Once finished, she hands it to you, as well as instructions for delivery.

"The Princess orders from us about once a week, the guards will be expecting you. Just tell the ones at the entrance you're from Tayce T.'s kitchen, and they'll lead you to the dining room, where she may be waiting if you're lucky!" She winks at you as she hands you the bag.

You start for the castle eagerly, but not too fast - after all, this is an important delivery, and you wouldn't want anything bad to happen to the food on the way. Toads are clumsy creatures, anything can go wrong...

Making your way North, you stroll into the Castle gate plaza, where a few eye-catching buildings are around, some of them among the most reputable attractions of this town. To your right is Minh T.'s flower garden, where the pink-spotted Toad is busy tending flowers as usual; to your left is the lot where the badge dealer Rowf, a merchant from across the ocean, does his business. On the same side as him is Merlon the fortune teller's house, easily identifiable by its spinning roof and purple color. And of course, the post office lies opposite of that.

Straight north is what really captures your attention, though; the big, blue gates of Mushroom Castle, adorned with the visage of a Star. No guards are posted, as anyone is welcome in the castle's garden, which connects to Shooting Star Summit.

Toad Town is nice, but you've got important business to attend to. Can't keep a Princess waiting, after all; you head for the gates, pushing them open and squeezing through as they thud heavily behind you.

The Castle proper is quite a sight to you. It's elegant, much like the Mansion in Forever Forest, but in a different sort of way. A fountain adorns the courtyard in front of the castle's door, inside of a small alcove guarded by two Toad guards wielding spears. To the left is a small grassy patch, most likely a spot for picnics, and to your right is a dirt path leading to a bridge, which presumably runs toward Shooting Star Summit.

As you approach with the food, the Toad guards call out to you. "What business do you have here, Boo?" They sound a lot more confident than Fice T. ever does.

"Food delivery for the Princess!" You smile the most friendly smile you can muster for a Boo, while the Toads look at each other in confusion.

"You must be from Tayce T.'s kitchen, then. The Princess is expecting you." They shift their spears away and open the doors to the castle, allowing you inside. "Go straight up the stairs," they instruct. "Her Highness will be waiting in the second floor dining room."

You bow politely toward them, wafting into the castle's foyer as the guards shut the door behind you. As they described, there's a positively massive set of stairs in the center of the room going up and back, covered in expensive-looking red carpet, which leads to a set of double doors. There's also four other doors off to the sides, two to your left and two to your right, There doesn't seem to be anyone in here right now.

You manage to wrangle your curiosity, and keep to the task at hand. You ascend the stairs, holding the still-warm food beneath your small phantasm of a body, and open the doors to the second floor dining hall.

This hall is nearly identical to the room you were just in, with doors on the sides again, though instead of one stairway up, there's two twin staircases wrapping around the sides of the room toward a single door, as well as a single door underneath that one, at your level. Several cute pink tables dot this room, with someone seated at-

Oh... there she is.

This is your first time doing something like this, so you're not exactly sure how to approach her... you want to say something, but your mouth can't form any words, so you end up shyly floating toward the Princess, holding the food you made.

By the time you're next to the table, she sees you out the corner of her eye and gasps, putting a hand to her mouth defensively. After a nervous second, she speaks in a sweet voice that makes your incorporeal heart shudder...

"Forgive me, I was lost in thought... is there something I can help you with?"

"Thanks, I hope you like it." Not wanting to lose your head in front of the Princess, you play it cool, despite your fuzzy vision and irregular breathing.

Without skipping a beat, the Princess picks up her fork, digging into the spaghetti. Her eyes light up at the taste, and she lets out a satisfied breath after finishing a few bites. "It's delicious!"

She then picks up the mushroom-cheese bread, taking a small bite of it, and reacting no less pleased. "Amazing!"

Quickly finishing the bread, she takes a few more bites of the pasta before turning to you, smiling wider than when you first started talking to her. "This is excellent! If you didn't tell me this was yours, I would have assumed Tayce T. made this herself!"

It's not like a Boo to be on the forefront of such praise. Therefore, you do as your instincts tell you when faced with such situations: you bury yourself under your stumpy hands, your face turning red as an apple.

The Princess just giggles innocently. "Gosh, I know Boos were shy, but you should be proud! I don't know anyone besides her that can cook this well. Not even my chefs here..."

As you stay flustered in your hands, she finishes off the pasta and starts digging into the pie. Even though you can't see her, you can hear her satisfaction with that as well.

You lift your eyes from your hands, just in time to catch a glimpse of the Princess smiling as she eats the last bit of her slice of pie, smiling as she finishes it.

A satisfying warmth rushes over you. This is the reason why you left the mansion in the first place, but you never thought you would be serving your own food to the Princess so soon. Maybe you do have some talent for this.

The Princess dots her mouth with a napkin, and lets out a satisfied sigh. "That was excellent, I think I'll save the rest for later." She puts the cover back on the rest of the pie, and turns to you. "Thanks for this meal, it really helped perk me up today."

She looks at you for a second, but then laughs with her hand at her face. "You're so funny!"

As you count your lucky stars she didn't think that was weird, the Princess scoots her chair back and gets up from the table.

"Really though, thank you for that delicious meal. It will make the rest of my day a lot more bearable. If you'll excuse me, Mr. Boobert..." She gives you a polite bow, and turns for the door at the back of this floor under the stairs, carrying the pie with her.

Staying on your best behavior, you bow back and wave the Princess goodbye as she retires to wherever she's going. You turn for the stairs and leave shortly after, keeping your mischievous instincts contained.

Exiting the castle, you can hardly contain your excitement. That final test was definitely a surprise, but you think you aced it. Now you can call yourself a real chef, soon as you get back to that kitchen!

Deciding you need to celebrate before heading back to Tayce T., you head across the bridge and take a detour toward Shooting Star Summit.

The green grass gradually turns to a beautiful, space-like shade of purple, as small star fragments fall from the sky, growing bigger and bigger as you float toward the mountain that is Shooting Star Summit. They say this place is the closest to Star Haven, the magical world above the clouds that grants wishes to the good citizens of the Mushroom Kingdom.

You guess it's fitting, seeing as your greatest wish since you can remember just got granted.

As you continue down the beautiful path, you notice it forks to one that goes toward the actual summit, and one that goes closer to the base.

You feel you need to thank the Star Spirits proper for their help in fulfilling your dream. You head up the higher path, toward the titular summit of this mountain.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dq-FeJ0scXQ

As you approach the peak, the stars become more apparent on the ground and walls, appearing almost like someone's projecting them from the skies themselves. An overwhelming sense of peace and spirituality wash over you, as you feel closer to the stars than you've ever been before. Vivid hues of pink, purple, yellow and white dance slowly around everywhere you can see, creating a heavenly spectacle unlike anything that can be found anywhere else in the Mushroom Kingdom.

It's nothing short of spectacular.

It's beautiful here, which makes seeing it from the top all the more tantalizing for you. You float up the path, as the stars get brighter and the sky seems to shimmer ever more.

As you ascend, you could swear the sky turned to night, despite it being the middle of the afternoon. The path spirals up around the mountain many times before you actually reach the peak, whereupon you find a sort of shrine. Seven stone stars are carved into the ground, to represent each Star Spirit, which circle around a single larger star in the center of this shrine-peak.

Looking off the side of the mountain, you can see the entirety of Toad Town, as well as several places nearby, like the tower of the Goomba King, and the old fortress where many Bob-ombs work and live. It's very humbling to see everything from this far up.

Being the spirit of tradition, it seems like a logical choice. The culinary arts are rooted deeply in tradition, from place to place, civilization to civilization, which makes it so diverse and fascinating wherever you go.

You thank Eldstar for giving you the opportunity to not only learn from a master chef, but to fulfill such an important task to the Princess in such a short time of study. You follow that up with a heartfelt plea for culinary wisdom, so your craft can develop further; you're still a beginner after all, even if you're talented, or just lucky.

After you finish praying, you open your eyes, noticing the symbol on the ground directly in front of you, representing Eldstar, is glowing a bright sky blue.

Boobert... my child...

"Is that you, Eldstar?" That's the only obvious answer.

My son, I have heard your wish... you have come so far in such a short time... your passion for the culinary arts is great... if you so wish it, I may give you a trial in which to test yourself, and expand your horizons...

"Yes!" This is what you just asked him for, after all. There's no way you'd turn something like this down.

Very well... Behold...

The bright blue light on Eldstar's sigil begins to pulsate, quickly rising in frequency, before a shimmering white object appears in the light, which fades back to a dim sky blue. What appears is a celestal-looking parchment that reminds you of a star chart.

This map... it will lead you to an opportunity... if you are truly wise, you can use this opportunity to further your expertise...

Long through the ages, have we Star Spirits given the people of the Mushroom Kingdom tests to hone their skills, and to help them grow as people... to guide you is our duty, more important than granting wishes...

You're not sure you understand what the Star Spirit means, but it's humbling to know how much they care about you.

Follow that map, fulfill your own trial... then you shall be that much closer to your dream... Farewell...

The voice fades from your mind, as does the shimmering light around the sigil, leaving only the map atop it. You float toward it, eagerly taking it in your stubby hands to see where destiny is going to take you.

It's a map of the entire Mushroom Kingdom, from Shiver City to Dry-Dry Desert, plus a few areas beyond the ocean you don't really recognize.

Strangely, there are three symbols marked in white on the map, silhouettes of items you recognize from the kitchen: a band of celery marked on Flower Fields, a turnip stamped on Lavalava Island, and a lemon (or is that a lime?) put seemingly in a random position over Dry Dry Desert.

You're still not sure really what this means - and that excites you.

You already know the first person you're going to tell about all this. You turn around and float down the mountain as fast as you can, backtracking to the green grass of Toad Town, through the Castle courtyard, and blast through the gates, leaving some very confused Toad guards in your wake.

Within minutes you're back at the kitchen, tuckered out from your legless jog. You open the door, not even knocking, and see Tayce T sitting in an armchair, reading a book. She looks up at your exhausted form and smiles.

"So, how did it go? Didn't scare the Princess half to death, did you?"

"It went better than I could have ever imagined!" You float around the kitchen in an excited panic, recounting what happened with the Princess to your master, while she politely listens and laughs.

"...and to top it all off, she said I was better than the chefs in her castle! She said I was as good as you!"

Once more, she chuckles at your story. "That's high praise, all right. Maybe someday we should both cook for her and see whose food is better." She winks to let you know she's joking, as she always does.

"That's not all, though!" You continue your story and show her the map you received on Shooting Star Summit, a story she listens to even more intently.

At the end of it, she's got her hand on her chin, seemingly lost in thought.

"What do you think about all this?"

It takes her still a few seconds to answer you. "I think... this is going to be a wonderful opportunity for you. You have so much natural talent as a chef; going on this journey, whatever it turns out to be, can only help you grow into a better one." She smiles warmly at you, which you return in stride.

You can't help feeling this is all strange, and unreal. This is too good to be true, like you're going to wake up in the mansion any time now, waiting to take your final test.

But it is real. And you're very happy about that.

"I think... I want to go on an adventure."

Tayce T. clasps her hands together. "That's what I was hoping to hear. Oh, you'll love seeing the Mushroom Kingdom..."

She begins to go on about the wonders of traveling and seeing the world, as you zone out and think about this map to yourself. Really, you don't have anything to go on besides the symbols on this map; there could be nothing there, for all you know. But the stars told you to go there, so go you shall!

Okay, gonna have a new thread at some point tonight, but I've got a few questions for you anons so we can pad out Boobert's character a bit better.

First and foremost: Does he have an accent?
>>
>>908833
He gets an accent when he cooks for that fancy trait.
>>
>>908833
>new thread at some point tonight
All my yes.
Maybe no accent normally, but he shows one when cooking or angry.
>>
>>908833
Like others said, he keeps his accent in control when he's neutral, but when he's in the throes of passion (which is usually when he's cooking), he has a notable French accent.
>>
>>908839
>>908842
>>908843

Good answer, I like this a lot

Next question: His appearance. Going by the photoshop work from much earlier in the thread, he's a brown Boo with a pencil mustache, which I like. Does he have any other defining accessories? I've given him a chef's hat, but is that a permanent headpiece or something he only wears to cook?
>>
>>908866
I really do like the tie when not fighting/cooking. A hat when he does.
>>
>>908866
Chef's hat only when cooking; we don't want to pigeonhole him too much. I think there was one picture where he was wearing a small tie.
>>
>>908870
>>908873

I forgot about the tie, that sounds good. Tie for business, hat for party

I'm not sure what else I need to ask about Boobert as necessity, so any other quirks he might have just as he exists? He's of course going to develop as the quest goes on into a more pronounced character, but if you anons have any fun/dumb ideas I'd love to hear them
>>
>>908904
I like how he is so far. A little shy, proud, tough and Frank.
>>
>>908904
I'm sure what we have of his character will come up as time goes on. Nothing truly brings out character like conflict.
