Your name is Haskell, son of Sven. A young Norse man of about seventeen, and heir to a family that has long since begun spiralling. A father who lost most of his hand raiding, a mother who took ill on a sickness brought back on the longships, and a brother who’s entire raiding party hasn’t been heard from in six months, presumed lost to the sea.

That’s about to turn around. When the local raidmaster watched you kill a frost giant in single combat, he decided to toss luck to the wind, and offered you a spot on a longboat. You accepted, and took a job to prove your worth, running a small wagon of food up to a temple in the mountains.

There, you found answers to a dream that had been plaguing you all your life; you were a Paladin, the chosen champion of Odin, as were three of your closest friends. Currently, your priority is to find the mythical Atlas of the Conqueror, last held by Charlemagne, and presumed to be somewhere in mainland Europe. Not much to go on, but it’s said that you don’t find the Atlas. You simply come across it when it believes you ready.

Gunnar quiets the crowd around you, and speaks. You can feel the fury in him before he even says a word.

“The trading post was a trap,” he says, nearly hissing in his anger. “They have at least twelve of us as hostages. Get all the boats in the water,” he screams, almost foaming at the mouth. “We’re going to get them, and we’re going to burn that place to the ground!”

In short order, the longships are overturned, and pushed back into the surf. Some ten men, most of them wounded, stay back on the beach with the loot, and they’re already building wilderness shelters for their, hopefully, short stay alone.

Knut finds you in the chaos that is tearing down camp. His gash along his eye is still the bright pink color of healing, but he is now able to open it the entire way, and seems to have full use of it.

“We going,” he asks of you simple, his knuckles white on the haft of his spear. You see Anders and Erik sitting in the distance, watching the two of you intently.

>Yes. They need to pay for what they did.

“They’re paying for what they did,” you say, gritting your teeth. “Blood, silver, and ash are what they owe,” you growl, and Knut nods curtly. You see relief wash over Anders and Erik as they stand, weighing their weapons in their hands.

You gather your weapons and armor, and a few days of food, and meet the other three at the prow of a ship.

“Gonna be a hell of a fight,” Knut begins as you wade through the surf. “Think we’re ready for this?”

“Fuck yeah we are,” Anders says with his usual bravado. “Gonna make some serious profit off of this strike, too!”

“And save the shield brothers taken hostage,” Erik says dourly. “You seem to forget about that.”

Anders merely grunts as he climbs aboard the ship. Erik, rolling his eyes, follows silently as you you and Knut climb up the other side.

Ship’s not quite full, but there are a handful of other norsemen on board with you. Not that you have to talk to any of them, of course. You all have a big day tomorrow.

You scan the deck, looking at the different men. Most share the same look of quiet intensity - they know what they’re heading into.

You see the one-eyed man that went with you to the farm, sitting alone and sharpening a seax. You squat down next to him, leaning against the wall of the ship as you sit. Now that you’re closer, you see his face is much more carved up than a simple gouged eye. In fact, you aren’t sure how someone even comes across these wounds without being tortured.

“You were at the farm, right,” you ask of him, offering a forearm.

“Aye,” he replies, grasping you around the wrist, in a much higher pitch than you expected from the scarred man. “Ivarr was. You did good work breaking up that shield wall,” he says, looking you up and down with his good eye. “Probably saved a handful of lives doing that.”

“Thank you,” you return, awkwardly wondering if you should make eye contact with the healthy side of his face, or just avoid the gaze all together.

“How’s your friend doing,” he questions. “Saw him on the beach. He going to end up like Ivarr,” he asks, chuckling exactly once at his own joke.

“He’ll be fine,” you reply, motioning towards Knut, who seems to have gotten into some sort of argument with Anders. “Missed the eye by enough he can see just fine.”

“That’s good,” he says as he leans back, apparently in relief. “Ivarr hasn’t thrown a spear the same way since he lost his.”

“As much of a shame as that is,” you say, looking over the grotesque face, “not everyone gets to tell people about wounds like that.”

“S’pose not,” Ivarr replies, stroking his beard in thought. “Ivarr got off pretty lucky compared to most men that come between a mother bear and her cubs.”

“Exactly!,” you exclaim, pointing to him. “And I’ve found axes are easier to throw, anyway.”

The two of you argue back and forth between the merits of throwing axes and javelins at your foes, with you saying the axes are lighter and you can carry more, and Ivarr taking the side that javelins will pierce mail and bone easier.

“So, any tips for a youngling heading into his first real battle,” you inquire as the discussion dies down.

“Don’t stop moving,” Ivarr says immediately. “You did well at old Lazlo’s farm, but that won’t be much compared to a defended trading post. If you stop moving once things pick up, you’ll be an easy target for anyone paying attention,” he explains. “Take it from Ivarr,” he finishes as he lifts up the bottom of his shirt, showing a small cross-shaped scar low on his belly that looks like it came from an arrow. You’re starting to believe Ivarr may be more scar tissue than regular flesh.

“Keep on the move, got it,” you say, making a mental note not to spend too long gloating over any kills or loot until the battle is done.

“And make sure you have someone to watch your back, and be damn sure you’re watching theirs. A good friend is worth ten shields in a fight.”

You simply nod as you look back to your friends, and grin as they shout and push at each other. Whatever your fights, you’d never hesitate to put your life in any of their hands.

“Well, Ivarr,” you say, clasping his shoulder as you stand, “if I see any poorly aimed javelins on the battlefield, I’ll know who threw them,” you finish, grinning as you sway on the rocking boat.

“Ja,” he says, grinning a smile that is missing a few teeth. “And if Ivarr sees anyone that hasn’t noticed a teeny little throwing axe in his back, he’ll know who threw that.”

You laugh as you leave the veteran, and approach your friends, who are currently still in a heated discussion.

“Look,” Anders begins, “all I’m saying is, under the right conditions. One swing.”

“That’s bullshit!” Knut shouts back, spit flying from his mouth. “Do you even know how thick the human neck is? There’s a big bone in there, you know!”

“Yeah, and a bear is fucking huge,” Anders replies, veins trying to burst through his forehead. “They push over full grown trees! Trees!”

“It’s not like they have swords for arms,” Erik says fairly non-chalantly, watching the argument with a look of bemusement.

“Thank you!” Knut shouts, thrusting his finger at Erik’s chest.

“Though,” Erik says, faking deep thought, “maybe if the person was small enough, the head could pop off from a swipe.”

You see where this is going, and step in before the men come to blows.

“Ivarr says we should pair up, since this is going to be a much larger fight,” you say, looking between the three of them. Who wants to pair up with who?”

“It would make sense for me to go with you,” Knut says. “With the longer weapons we both have, we could support each other easily.”

“Or I could,” Anders offers. “Might make more sense to make sure the bigger, slower weapons don’t get stuck together.”

“I’m going to be using my bow for most of it,” Erik says, patting his new weapon. “I’ll take whoever you don’t go with, and I’ll still probably be able to support the other two, to an extent.

You’re about to answer when Anders interrupts you.

“Also!,” he shouts. “Could a full grown bear take the head off of someone with one swing,” he asks, mimicking the motion of a bear giving a horizontal swipe at someone. Knut screams, and brings his hands up to his face. He apparently disagrees. Erik simply gives that mischevious smile he gets on his face when he's egging Anders on.

Y'know, on one hand I really like the idea of us acting as the shieldwall while Anders does his thing and makes sure people can't shank us in the ribs.
On the other, I also like the idea of us up front and Knut in the back with his spear.

In the end, I think Erik/Knut is a better combo than Erik/Anders, since Knut with his spear should be able to keep folks away from our archer.

“I’ll fight with Anders,” you say, nodding towards your friend. “Erik will struggle with mid-ranged stuff, and Knut will support him well with that.”

Anders nods, and Knut and Erik look to each other as well.

“As for the bear,” you say, and both Anders and Knut look to you with excitement. “It depends on the size of the bear and the size of the person, and it would definitely crush your skull, but at the end of the day, I don’t think it’s claws have the cutting surface to take your head off.”

“Told you!” Knut shouts at Anders, pointing at him accusingly.

“Maybe we should ask Ivarr,” you mention, nodding over towards the man you’d just spoken with. “He got attacked by a bear, and his head is still firmly attached.”

“Wasn’t a square hit,” Anders says simply as he shakes his head. “Got clawed over the face, not a clean smack on the side of the head.”

Knut looks about to explode into argument again, but you cut him off, rolling your eyes.

“What do we know about the survivor,” you ask, looking between your friends. “Anyone know what he said?”

“I talked to Gunnar about it a bit,” Erik says. “He thinks he got away clean, but they weren’t too concerned about looking for runners. Gunnar doesn’t think it’s a trap. Slav mercenaries are too far up their own ass to think their plan didn’t work to perfection.”

“As long as it isn’t a trap,” Knut says, drumming his fingers on his thigh. “But if they don’t know we’re coming, we have a huge advantage.”

The rest of the day passes into the night. You’re woken up by the break of dawn, and about an hour after stirring you can see the smoke of the trading post drifting lazily into the sky up the river. Gunnar calls the boats to a stop, and they rest onto the river bank as Gunnar shouts of the sound of rushing water.

“Two miles from the trading post,” he yells, pointing up-river. “Two full boats are slamming right into the front gate. The other two are disembarking and going around the sides. I also want a team going around the back. Who wants where?”

Knut, Anders, and Erik look to you. You seem the be making all the decisions.

“We’re the fucking chosen ones,” you say, puffing your impressive chest proudly. “We should go right through the front door.”

Knut and Anders nod excitedly, while Erik merely shrugs. The four of you switch boats, climbing over the edge to find Gunnar sharpening his sword nervously.

He nods to the group, and goes back to honing the edge of his blade.

You find a space on the deck to sit. Anders is testing the weight of his newfound sword while Knut is making sure his spear is still firmly attached to it’s new haft. Erik strings his bow and pulls on it to test the weight. Satisfied, he pulls his quiver from his back, and slowly arranges all the arrows the way he wants them.

A few hundred yards from the main gate, you hear the alarm bells ringing, and just barely able to make out the distant shouting. It’s too late. The men of the North are upon them.

Ineffectual arrow fire rains down as you near the gate. One plants itself disconcertingly close to your right foot, and you look up towards the defenses sternly.

You brace yourselves as the front long boat smashes through the heavy wooden gate, it’s speed and weight tearing through bar they attempted to lock it with. The boat steers off to the side, hitting the right bank of the river that runs through the trading post.

You jump down and shout, and reach for your weapon of choice.

“The ladder,” you shout immediately as you turn to face Anders. “Those archers need to go down, now!”

He simply grunts as he begins to sprint along side you. On the move, you pull your shield from your back, and your axe from your belt. You meet the first fan in a matter of moments, the slav bracing behind his shield for your charge. He hides behind it, expecting to stop an axe blow. He is totally unprepared for what happens.

Your full weight and might slams into the man, lifting him fully off his feet as he screams. He lands in a heap a few yards away, grunting in pain and looking about confused.

Anders doesn’t even slow down as he feigns an overhead swing from his sword. When his opponents shield is up, he slams the axe into his side, pulling it out on the run. The shocked opponent falls to the ground, bleeding and screaming.

Stealing a glance back, you see Erik nock and release an arrow. You hear screams in the distance, but are unable to pinpoint their location. Knut covers both himself and Erik behind his shield, his spear pointing out threateningly.

You hear a shout from up on the wall, and the twang of bow strings release. Instinctively, your shield covers your right side, and you feel the weight of an arrow slam into it. You don’t slow down to look back, but you hear a few shouts and swears come from directly behind you.

Roll 3d10 for a given action against a hidden DC. You can add points from the given skill on your character sheet to raise the roll at a 1:1 ratio.

Been considering going back to d100 though, but taking out critfails. It's what this quest was originally built around.

High rolls are 22 and 24, because I'm a cool QM and I'm taking geogio's fixed roll.
>>
Also, those are Power and Athletics rolls if you guys want to add points.

It worked once, and there’s no reason to think it won’t work again. You barrel fully into his raised shield, and it buckles underneath your power. The man doesn’t go flying out of your way like your previous target; instead, he merely collapses under your assault, getting trampled in the process. You hear at least one long bone snap, but to his credit, he does not scream. You continue forward.

Anders has his sword blow bounce off his man’s shield, but quickly hooks the edge of it with the beard of his axe, and spins to throw the man away from him. His quarry recovers and spins to face Anders, but he is already well away.

Another arrow volley is released with a tell-tale thump. A small weight strikes your shoulders, but you feel neither pain nor blood, so you assume an arrow was deflected by your armor. A good investment, that. There are, however, a number of shouts from behind you. You recognize Gunnar’s voice among them, though his is much more angry than it is pained.

You sneak a glance back. The vikings are forming a tight shield wall, but Erik and Knut are blocked from view by the corner of a building.

You quickly transfer your axe to your shield hand, whipping out a throwing axe on the run. It buries itself into the man’s thigh, and he bites down the pain.

Anders reaches him before you do, however, the man expertly parries both his blows. He knocks the sword away with the edge of his shield, and blocks the swing from his axe wit his blade. You charge in, not taking the time to switch back to your axe, and swing your shield in a horizontal punch. The man collapses in a pile of screams and shattered teeth. You’re unsure if he’s dead, but he won’t be back in this fight before it’s over.

You are now too close to the wall for the archers to fire down on you, so they focus their fire on the shield wall. Now that you have a moment to breathe, you take a look. The shield wall is not doing well under the archer fire, and the rest of the enemy soldiers seem content to let their bowmen pick away at them.

When you snap back to your immediate happenings, you see the man Anders spun around, as well as two from the roadway, charging at the two of you. Only one of you will have time to get up the ladder before they arrive. Anders will be able to get up the ladder faster, but does not have a shield to protect himself from the arrows. You do, although your heavy frame will take you longer up the wall, leaving Anders on his own against three opponents, again, with no shield. You could both stay down, but those archers are wasting away at your comrades, though it appears none are actually dead yet. Along the wall of the settlement, you hear a pounding, and the door leading out is heaving with each crash.

You look to Anders as you plant your axe in the side of your unconscious foe’s head, and he nods, fire burning intensely in his eyes. The two of you charge at the lone man, ahead of his peers by several paces.

You run into him, shield first, and send him spinning around from the impact. He drops to a knee, and you open a gash across his shoulders with a swing from your axe. He grunts in pain as he spins on a knee, lashing out with his blade. He scores a slice across Anders’ thigh, drawing blood. Anders retaliates with a powerful downward strike, digging deep into the soldier’s torso. He coughs once before falling over, his eyes vacant.

Yet another volley is fired from the wall, the arrows largely hitting the shield wall. A few make it through however, and you hear shouts of pain as the shield wall pushes ever closer together. Those arches are picking your men apart.

The other two men charging split up, one heading for each of you. Your man has his sword raised high above his head, preparing for a brutal slash at your head and shoulders.

The booming from the gate is staying steady, and you hear the wooden bar beginning to creak under the assault.

With his aggressive, dual wielding style, Anders is not well suited to be on the defensive. Interrupting his enemy’s charge and putting him off balance will give Anders a huge advantage. You wait until the last moment, until you can nearly hear the mercenary’s sword whistling through the air to make your move. You attempt to spin out of the way, out from under the blade. You partially succeed; you manage to skirt the blade’s cutting wrath, but the merc catches on to what you’re attempting, and derails your efforts with a shoulder into your side. The extra step you have to take to balance yourself proves valuable, and you are just barely able to force yourself in front of Anders, narrowly knocking the second soldier’s sword aside with the edge of your shield. You bodily block him from your friend, who uses his agility to capitalize on your foe’ confusion.

He sidesteps the commotion you’ve caused, and strikes with both of his weapons. His sword thrust actually is blocked by the back of your shield in your attempt to create separation, but his axe swings upward, scoring a puncture in the man’s hip. He growls in pain and backs up a step to distance himself from the two of you.

“I had something planned,” Anders mutters under his breath. How he can find the time or the air to speak mid-combat, you’re unsure.

Another volley is loosed, and you hear cries of victory from the wall. Stealing a quick glance, you see a viking slump to the ground, an arrow clean through his eye. Gunnar is also swearing up a storm behind the shield wall, but you’re not sure if he’s even noticed the arrow punching straight through his left shoulder.

It looks like one of the archers is now standing at the top of the ladder, attempting to get a shot on you or Anders. Judging from the look of concentration he’s holding, he’s having a hard time with the commotion of your fight with the other two men.

All the while, the pounding on the gate continues. You feel they’re taking their sweet time, but that plank they’re using to bar it is easily as big around as you.

The man is wounded and slow, and won’t be able to withstand the both of you for long. You attack downward with your axe, scoring a cut down to the bone of his shoulder. He screams in pain as Anders runs him through with his sword. The man twists as he dies, taking Anders’ sword with im. Your friend swears, and looks nervously to the man behind you before looking back to his disarmed weapon. Hastily, he kicks the dying man over, and works on pulling the blade free.

You’re on your own for a moment, it seems, and you spin wildly, lashing out with your axe as you do so. Your target hops back a step, avoiding the arc of your weapon, and lunges at you with his sword. The tip of his blade veers off of your armor, but you still end up with a deep gash from your right chest down around your ribs. If that had struck true, you’d likely be dead or dying right now, instead of swearing at the stream of blood leaking from your wound.

The archer at the top of the ladder fires in your momentary lapse of focus, though you incidentally raise your shield arm, blocking the arrow from striking you. You seem to be having an odd string of luck.

The other nine archers fire on the shield wall, though they are now tight enough that no arrow makes it through. The rest of the vikings begin to advance slowly, careful not to allow any gaps in their defense.

You hear a massive crack from the gate, and the bar holding it shut splinters, and a large split goes from end to end, though the doors are still secure. Your reinforcements should be through at any moment now. Anders shouts in victory over his already dead foe, and pulls his bloody blade from the man’s chest. Thanks for the help.

You shout in both rage and pain, slamming the man with your shield, cursing as you agitate the wound. Biting through the pain, you rush the two steps up to him and plant the head of your axe in his chest. He coughs up blood, and you headbutt him to knock him to the ground.

Anders drops his sword, and picks up one of the fallen foe’s blades. He turns quickly, throwing the blade side arm at the archer on the wall.

The three of you watch it fly harmlessly over the palisade, missing it’s target by at least ten feet. The archer takes a break from trying to kill the two of you, and simply looks to you while gesturing with one hand to Anders. You answer with a shrug and a slow shake of your head.

“Fuck both of you,” Anders says incredulously. “Do you know how fucking cool that would have been if I’d have stuck him?”

An explosion of wood breaks the brief reprieve, and another twenty angry Norsemen storm through the now-open gate. Several fall to a fresh hail of arrows, but enough make it through into the village streets. Mercenaries rush to meet them, and townspeople finally leave the relative safety of their home to join the attack. The streets of the trading post have become a chaotic melee of screams and clanging metal, and the archers on the wall continue their bloody work. The man at the top of the ladder takes a shot, missing your axe-arm narrowly, and digging into the base of the building behind you.

You shift your axe into your shield hand, and pull out the second of your three throwing axes. The archer backs up, but he is unable to completely hide himself and keep an eye on you. You throw the axe overhand, sending it spinning end over end towards your foe. The man instinctively raises his hands to block it, and does so. However, the impact and the edge cut him down to the bone, and destroy his bow. He howls in pain and drops the now snapped weapon as you rush the ladder, hoping to take advantage. You’re most of the way up when he pulls out his short sword. You pull your shield over your head. It makes the climbing awkward, but you’ve already got a nasty wound. You’d prefer not to have another. You look down, and Anders is just a few rungs behind you.

It’s then you feel your shield smack against your head. It doesn’t wound you, but it’s certainly enough to get your attention. Judging from the grunting sounds coming from above you, you’d guess he’s stomping on your shield to try to dislodge you. You continue climbing regardless, and eventually end up at the top of the ladder. You’re unable to continue without dealing with the man.

You could hook his ankle with your axe and try to trip him or pull him over, or you could simply explode over the edge and try to overpower him with surprise and brute force. Either way, it should be done quickly. You and Anders are easy prey for anyone on the ground with a bow or a javelin.

You are absolutely correct. I need to start keeping notes or something.

Alright, I'm gonna get some sleep. I have boring work shit in the morning, then other boring work shit all weekend.

Thanks for playing, and I'm always looking for feedback, criticism, and questions. See ya

>>Try to pull the man over the edge, or at least trip him
As soon as we are over the edge the other archers will shoot at us, so we have to clear the way first.

Thanks, see you soon.

one less on the wall and I kinda like this guy, made fun of Anders mid battle

coming in for a third for when handler gets back

A lot of people seem superhuman in this able to withstand crippling wounds and continue to fight at least semi-efficently

Other than that it's cool

I try to implement rule of cool when possible. Let me know if it starts getting out of hand.

No update today, but let's get a 6d10 roll to pull him over the edge. First will be an axe roll to hook him, second will be a power roll to try to get him over.

I'll roll to see how he fares should you succeed.
>>
Rolled 2, 3, 7, 3, 3, 5 = 23 (6d10)

>>894106
>>
Rolled 6, 2, 3, 10, 9, 4 = 34 (6d10)

>>894106
It does get tend to slow down combat I mean losing a hand or getting an axe solidly to the thigh will put you out commision

maybe save the rule of cool for characters or actual threats
>>
Rolled 8, 2, 5, 7, 3, 1 = 26 (6d10)

>>894106
>>
Rolled 8, 3, 5, 6, 9, 6 = 37 (6d10)

>>894106
Agreed with
>>894169
The quest is great but it moves slowly, you can streamline combat and the decision making process and it wouldn't suffer at all
>>
>>894169
>>894355
I've been thinking about making a slight change to the way I do combat. While I like the freedom the >plan of action style gives you, and I'm sure you guys do too, it seems to always boil down to 'Well, I guess we hit him with the axe again.' That's mostly my fault for not really allowing for more dynamic combat.

Would anyone complain if I started giving options? Something like

>Attempt to end the fight with an overhead swing
>Try to break through his guard with a flurry of blows
>Trip him and force the fight to the ground

While still allowing write-ins?

Next update will be around noon my time. I need to crash. Thanks for the feedback, guys. I appreciate it.
>>
>>896557
yeah that works

>Ask for rolls for generic combat sequence
>Anon suggests Haskell does x along with choice
>x gets popular support
>you throw x into the mix of combat/conversation

otherwise if the write in get popular support you run with it

>Thanks for the feedback
just glad you're receptive Handler

That's good in my opinion.

You maneuver the axe between the shield and the wall, and try to hook the beard around his ankle. He dances around your blade as he rains down strikes onto your shield, and you’re unable to properly catch his foot. You settle for half-hearted strikes and stabbing at his leg with the sharp corner of your axe, and you manage to force him back against the edge of the wall. You get the room and you force your way onto the platform, shield raised and axe ready to strike.

Anders clambers up after you, standing behind your defensive posture and ready to strike around you, should you need assistance. This proves to be a wise decision, as a handful of arrows slam into your shield. One even punches through the planks of your shield, embedding itself in the muscle of your forearm. It’s painful, but you doubt it’s going to stop you from doing much unless you switch from the shield. You curse in pain, and try to shrink behind the shield further to avoid future shooting.

Below you, the melee continues, far too chaotic for you to actually pick out happenings. You try to pick out Knut and Erik, but between the more pressing concern and the complete dissarry of the fighting, you are unable to find them.

Okay, rushing in to disrupt archers. Haskell, always putting his comrades over his health.

Power roll is a 21 and axe roll is a 16. Writing.

There’s not really any telling how many of your comrades these archers have already killed or wounded. The sooner you stop them, the more lives you’ll likely end up saving. Ignoring the arrow in your forearm, you charge forward into the center of the line of archers. You knock several aside, and end up well within melee range of several others, forcing them to drop their bows to deal with you. You hear Anders rushing in behind you, swearing at both you and the mercenaries alike.

All in all, five of the remaining nine archers are forced to stop shooting and turn their attentions to you. You manage to block the strike of a sword with your shield and narrowly turn out of the way with another. You take a swing with your axe as a third man strikes out at you, the blade of your weapon raking across his knuckles, causing him to cry out and drop his sword. He grabs a small knife from his belt, and looks at you with venom in his eyes.

Anders isn’t faring so well. He’s got two men on him, and a fresh wound on his sword arm. One of the men is currently leaning on the wall spitting out several teeth, but that doesn’t change the fact that half of your friend’s weapons are on the ground, and he seems unable to close his right hand all the way.
