You are, at the moment, drumming your fingers idly across your arm.
For most people, it would be something innocuous and quiet, the barely present sound of fingertips tapping on soft flesh.

In your case, being a creature somewhere between a giant spider and half an elf, both your hands and your arms are coated in rather durable chitin.
Which of course means that your habit is less invisible idling, and more 'children throwing toys down the stairs'.

You stop yourself by interlacing your fingers, pursing your lips as you try and think things through without a physical outlet.

You're fairly certain you weren't like this before.

The impatience and fidgeting bit.
You're absolutely certain you weren't a spider before.

Still, that's not really anything to be concerned about at the moment.
More importantly, you're trying to decide on the kind of enchantment to put on your new spear.

"So it is just the two, yes?"
"They're the only two the tower can do, certainly. I won't go and make some sort of final statement- Who knows what someone could find at the bottom of a ruined city. Or a dungeon."
"I... see?"
"Mhm."

So, aside from any mythicak enchantment that may or may not be uncovered at some indeterminate point in the future, your current options are a pair of strengthening enchantments.
Both go on the spear, of course, they just target different things.

You and the spear, respectfully.

>You'll evolve, right? Better to get something for the spear itself.
>If it affects you, it'll be useful no matter how much you grow, right?
>Maybe you can get more specifics?
>Other (?)

Aw, Yeah!

Incidentally, I know that the process is done, but, I wish that we had held off the naming thing until we had both spears; they could have had a pair naming (Blood & Thunder, for example)!

We did, actually! One enchantment will make the spear stronger, while the other would make the wielder stronger.

The strengthening enchantment it is.
The spear one.
For the spear.

Fuck yes spider time!
Only an hour until I get off work and can really enjoy it though.

I care not for spear choices. I will wait for our chance to cover everything in webs.
Is the room we are staying in covered in webs yet? We can start there.
Also, drink more if that bagged slurry. I know you brought some.

One just has to keep in mind, unless a wizard can help with tracking them down, she has no idea where all of them are.

As far as she knows, Mom and Dad are still in the forest with Zach and Ephram, while Elle is still in town.

She knows that Aria and Sara left, but she doesn't know any specifics.

"I think the strengthening enchantment would be best, yes."
"Of course. You can settle any payments downstairs, and the tower will contact you once the work is finished." He rattles off proffessionally.

"Ordinarily, we would deliver the weapon itself, but-"
He looks to the table straining under the weight of your spear.
"I think, in this case, you'll have to pick it up yourself."
You nod.

It doesn't take long for you to make your way back down the stairs, and it is even less time for the benefits of being an arachne adventrer and sometimes architect to become clear.
The enchantment largely fails to make a significant dent in your savings.

It's starting to worry you a bit, really. You haven't exactly gotten a good grip on the value of things, money or otherwise.
How was it that people did it before?
A meal, right?

But your meals are...

Maybe you can compare the cost of Nin's meal.

You're seen politely out the door, and back into the cool air of the coming season.

That's one spear down then. And another in progress.
So this is free time, right?

You could nap, you suppose. At the inn. Or just up a building. Maybe a park?
Waking up Ezzy is an option, too. You'll have to do it sooner rather than later. Otherwise you'll have to deal with an excited snake when you're trying to sleep.
Then there's the temple, and you think someone wanted to see you? For something?

You should get a journal. Or a notebook, or whatever.
So you can stop forgetting things.

And paper would be a good idea, too. For letters.
Gods, you haven't written anyone at all. Not even Sara. Or Mom.

Maybe there's some sort of speedy message service. You can send Mom something like "AM SAFE, NO PROBLEMS LOVE LYRA".
She's... probably not already on her way because you haven't sent anything, right?

No, there's no way she'd do that. You're grownup enough that she trusts you, yes. You're mature and responsible!

You make your choice, with the kind of decisiveness that would be the envy of any group of people who are sitting in a circle and "I dunno, what do you want?" until they all starve to death in a tragic act of passive agressinve idiocy.

It's just dinner. Or lunch.
You never understood the whole argument there. Why didn't people just say what they wanted? If someone put you on the spot like that, you wouldn't hesitate.
"I want bear, yes."
You nod to yourself. Or maybe whatever is closest. Assuming they have dead animals.

You aren't picky. Just carnivorous.

In any case, your path is set- Your legs carry you towards the merchants and stores of the city, where you can buy paper, and pray that such a fragile thing can stop your mother.

So you distract yourself by poking Esmerelda.

The hissing grows as you move, gradually increasing in volume and that sort of half-anger half frustration people get when they're woken up early.
Grumpiness. Yes.

"-SSSSsssSSSSsssSSS-"
"Shush, you."
"Ssssstop poking me."
"No. Wake up, yes."
"I refusssse."

You click at the uncooperative reptile and flick your hair back, the mass of it flying over your shoulders and unveiling the unwilling snake to the sun.

"No! Traitor!"
"It is... Sometime in the afternoon. It is time to wake up."
"You can't make me!"
"You are already awake, yes."
"I'll go back to sleep!"

"Also, You are much larger."
"I'll hide under your skull and- what?"
"What?"
"What did you sssay?"

You shrug your shoulders, moving the dead weight of your lazy companion- Ezzy, specifically- up and down with the motion.
"I don't know, yes. What did I say?"
"Hah! HAH! AHAHAHAHAH!"

That's about what you expected.

"Look at me! Look at how BIG I am! Yessssss!"
"You are much larger."
"I am. I am! And my scales! Look at my scales! Hahaha!"

You focus your efforts on compliments rather than sarcasm.
She is much larger than she was. And larger than the other snakes you've seen.
She might get a bit depressed if you told her she was the size of a small child.

A very long child, mind you, but still.

"Put me down!"
"Pardon?"
"On the ground! Look at how big I am! I can walk on my own!"
"Slither, yes."
"Down!"

so many adventurer problems are trivialized by being a giant spider. It's great.
Though, it makes it much harder to fit in things. And we have to eat a lot.

Well played.
>>
Ezzy, being approximately as patient as you are when it comes to her own size, immediately disregards things such as gravity, common sense, and now that she's out from underneath the curtain of your hair, the fact that her clothing is several sizes to small for her anymore.

Luckily, you are faster than she is.

You snag the snake before she can make good on her escape attempt, dragging her back up to your neck and tucking her beneath your hair once more.
"No! Down!"
"Ezzy, you are not wearing clothes, yes."

There's a moment of silence as the snake confirms what you've said before she starts tugging at your hair.

"Lyra. Lyra!"
"Yes?"
"I need clothesss. Please." She enunciates carefully.
"Yes."

You meander through town, clacking slowly towards your destination, your hands full of silk and your hair full of snake.
You certainly aren't Elle, by any means, but you can at least weave tunics. And a few little belts, so she can tie it off where it needs to be tied. It's not fancy, but you've managed to make it without knitting your hands together or running anyone over, so you're going to declare this a personal win.

You pass the new outfit beneath the curtain of hair and walk a little slower as your resident snake wriggles her way out of nudity.

"Ah-HA!"
And then she immediately lunges victorious for the ground.
You oblige the snake by catching her before she manages to face plant the ground in her excitement, and lower her carefully down between your legs.
You were considering it while you made the tunic, but-

Well, no one can step on her if she's under you, right?
Not without moving you, anyway.

And, well, if someone attempts to move you to step on your friends-
Well, it won't end quietly.

"Yessss. Yes."
Ezzy can't hold herself back, slithering as fast as she can manage, her human hald near paralell to the ground as she moves.
Even her tongue is flickering in and out non-stop as she swerves forwards- You pick your pace up ever so slightly to match her.

And you keep that pace as you head into the market, as the crowd grows and Ezzy starts to slow down, lifting herself to her new full height, sliding over the cobblestones.

"Lyra."
"Yes?"
"Where are we going?"
"I need paper, yes. And ink. Or something to write with. Maybe other things. I haven't decided yet."
"Why is the ground so cold?"

"Because it's getting colder?"
She coils herself as she stops, the tip of her tail flicking back and forth as she looks around.
"Everything looks smaller." She says confidently.

You know why she said it, of course.
"You're just bigger, yes."

She giggles excitedly, hugging herself as she sways, any evidence of her age being over yours long gone.
>>
>>872207

"Pick me up, please."

You offer her an arm, and she coils around it, heading for your shoulders, and neck- she's definitely cooler now, each scale slowly warming as she tries her best to burrow into your neck and hair.

"We'll figure something out soon." You murmur.
"What?"
"You'll be too large to sleep there, yes. Especially if you get any bigger than this."
"Ah."

A store on your left is showcasing bundles of paper and books in th windows, and you turn and make your way to the door.
A bell chimes overhead as you step in, but you can't go any further- The building is divided into neatly organised aisles. Human sized aisles.

You frown.

Your options, as they are, are rather limited here.

There's the ceiling, of course. Your friends, as well.

But you're fairly certain the ceiling won't hold, and everything on your back will come falling down. You still haven't got around to inventing seatbelts for your behind.

And really, a seatbelt wouldn't cut it, anyway. It'd have to be a harness of some sort. Over the shoulders, maybe? Or like a net dome over each eye socket?

Either way, you don't want to dump your friends out across the store, and then drop the building on all of you.

You could, alternatively, deploy your friends. Wake each one up, assign them an item to locate and purchase.
Actually, that... would probably work, to be honest.
They're your friends. You trust each and every one of them.

Maybe not with everything. You wouldn't trust Jin with a box of matches, for instance.

But there's an easier way.
One that involves no real work on your part whatsoever.

So you'll go for that one.

"Hello, yes? I need help, please."
"One moment!"

There's a clatter of something as a middle aged woman makes her way out of the back of the shop, side stepping piles of something.

"What seems to be the problem, miss?"
"Lyra, yes. And I am very large."
"Huh?"
"I do not fit in the store."

The lady makes her way through the aisles, sizing you up as she leans against a shelf.
"I see."
"Mhm."
"Well, what can I help you with today?"
"Paper, yes. And something to write with. I'd like to send letters to my family."

She nods amicably, and you watch as the lady heads back into the aisles of goods, stopping here and there to pull things from the shelves.
You aren't long before you're back on the streets, blessedly wide enough for your spider-sized frame.

You've also decided that spider sized now means you sized, rather than tiny arachnids.
It's for the best.

The guild is warm, a massive fire stoked on one side in preparation for the coming winter, and gemstones embeded in the walls emitting heat everywhere else.
You should look into that once you're out an about again. Jin is all but made of fire, and Sheszka is a yeti, but Nin and Ezzy would likely benefit from winter clothing. And maybe something enchanted to keep them warm.

But for now-

For now, you pick out a brightly lit table, and set your purchases out before making room to sit, picking up a simple quill and dipping it in a fresh pot of ink as you start to ponder how to tell your mother all about the things you've done and seen without prompting her to descend on the city like the wrath of a god.

The quill dries long before you set it to paper.

I'm going to end it here tonight.
Thanks for playing, all!

I'll be around to answer questions for a little while.

As for the next thread, it should be a lot sooner than this one, hopefully. Overtime seems to be dying off as we approach the holidays, so I'll pray that I get some time off.
>>
>>873023
See you next time ReQM! Hopefully someone archives.

It is good to see that lyra is completely incapable of doing responsible things like writing home. Good show. I hope your dreams of less overtime are not smashed by holidays.

>>

I think snakes just have to be really long if they want to rear up like ezzy does AND move. It's physics and shit.

>>

Thanks for playing!

>>873087
I did genuinely consider giving her the blessing of the god of sleep.
The more I've looked at the source material, the more I've realized just how many 'gods' the original setting had, including incredibly specific once.

>>873117
I'm afraid not. If you look up Bush viper, you can see the kind of scales I'm basing the evolution on. I love the spiky snakes.

>>873125
There's only one thing to do: Hurl her into the air for practice.
>>
>>873132
I don't mind that she has spiky scales, but we need to give her FLIGHT PRACTICE. Jin, you're up!
>>
>>873138
I bet with our silk we could make her a kite to soar around with.
>>
>>873132
>I did genuinely consider giving her the blessing of the god of sleep.

Will dungeons automatically provide appropriately sized enemies for Ezzy? She tends to be outmatched in regular encounters.
>>
>>873132
Hey REQM, whats been up with the quest schedule lately? As in, the 1 update a month thing? Something goin' on your end?
>>
>>873152
I think it is the deadly spectre of employment, anon.
>>
>>873150
They will!

Gods aren't much interested in just outright slaughtering people, except for the ones who are.

>>873152
Work. Lots and lots of work. Overtime heading into the weekend, then early starts come monday for follow ups with clients.
I've basically been getting home, collapsing into a chair and doing nothing until I go to sleep and do it again the next day.
I'm taking steps now, like saying no to overtime when I can, but I still work quite a bit.
>>
Hmm, probably overthinking things, but with the talk of gods: how do the ones that walk the earth manage? Do they all meditate on top of mountains or something? Act as walking weapons of mass destruction? Climb to the top of political ladders and manage things?
>>
>>873186
Sweet.
Now all we need to do is build some kind of defensive arena around ezzy to ensure only tiny things get in.
Some kind of... small... battle... room.
>>
>>873186
so speaking of a flying Ezzy, would it ever be posable for her to become something like a quetzalcoatl? The feathered wing snake?
>>
>>873227
She's a "draconic" viper lamia.
I assume she is becoming a chinese wish dragon.
>>
So, I know Ezzy had the torso of a tiny human, but has it changed proportion wise? Like, is she shaped like a very short human, rather than a mini one?
>>
>>873244
I thought she was "small child sized" now?
>>
>>873208
The ones actually around mostly mind their own business.
They have a domain of some sort that they look after, and they're kept in check by other gods.

Of course, if someone were to provoke them, they'd respond in kind.

>>873244
Proportion-wise, Ezzy is a 'normal' human size. Fully grown arms/body/head etc- She's just small.
She is, after all, an 'adult'.
>>
Good thread.
>>
We get an appropriately-sized firestone, bring it to a jewelers/appropriate artisan. We get them to make a heat-conducting harness for Ezzy that's modular so that it can be modified to conduct the heat to her whole length. More or less. Whaddya think?
