You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you were sitting in the back of an Osprey as it made its way full steam to the Straits of Malacca, where Saratoga and Hazelwood had last been spotted. With you right now were your sisters, as well as DesDiv 6 forming the destroyer picket. San Fran, Dorsetshire, and Kumano were serving as the cruiser line while Iowa, Kongou, Enterprise, Midway, and Kaga were serving as the heavy hitters.

With a force this large, you note that the Captain and Admiral certainly were not taking any chances.

"We'll be in the AO in fifteen!" The pilot announces. "Get ready to drop!"

The shipgirl passengers, including you, all voice their affirmatives.

You then take a look around. You could see DesDiv6 all clustered around a very flustered and uncomfortable looking San Fran, who's fighting the instinct to reach for her hip flask. Kongou was in a very... animated conversation with Dorsie, who seemed to be putting up the fakest, most plastic smile you've ever seen. Kumano, meanwhile, seemed to be making sure she was always on the opposite end of the cabin from you and your sisters.

You slide over to where San Fran is being continually pestered by the quartet of Japanese destroyer girls that had tagged along. Oh man, it was absolutely delicious. She was penned in on either side by Ikazuchi and Inazuma, while both Hibiki and Akatsuki were settled on her lap, preventing any kind escape.

"So, so was it true that you fought fifty Abyssal by yourself?" Ikazuchi asked in awe.

"I think you have me confused with Sammy." San Fran grumbles.

"I-Is it true you're the only shipgirl to have gone into the Dark Zone, nanodesu?" Inazuma asks softly.

"If I told you, I'd have to sink you." San Fran replies with a hint of venom and menace to her voice.

"Hawawawawa!" Inazuma quakes under San Fran's gaze.

"You shouldn't do that." Hibiki cautions. "Inazuma scares easily."

"Ha, that's because like a true lady, San Francisco commands presence!" Akatsuki laughs smugly.

"Do you even know what that phrase means?" Hibiki raises an eyebrow.

"O-Of course!" Her sister stammers.

While they're distracted, San Fran takes the chance to turn her head to you and mouths the simple words.

"Help meeeeee!

Rather than do anything, you just give a smug little smile and take out your phone.

"No..." San Fran's face falls into despair as the realization dawns upon her. "You wouldn't-"

Your answer comes in the artificial shutter snap sound your phone makes as you take the picture of San Fran covered in Japanese destroyers.

"Fuck you, Hoel." She hisses, low enough enough that the destroyers can't hear.

You just give a silent thumbs up.

Oh OOOOOOH, maybe you should sent it to Atlanta! She'd definitely get a kick out of it!

So... what sort of shenanigans is our Woel up to? Has she engaged in a drinking contest with the Russians in a bid for 'german' superiority? Or has there been Abyssal incursions where they try to make everyone 'beautiful' but end up distracted by something.

Welp, too late. It's already sent off to Atlanta. Almost immediately, you get a reply from her.

>Haha, how cute! Tell Frannie she should really come visit! <3

San Fran narrows her eyes. She could tell you had just texted the picture off to someone, and she had a very good idea of who it probably was. You just give a shit eating grin and shrug when the Osprey rumbles.

"We've arrived at the AO!" The pilot announces. "Forward recon is reporting heavy Abyssal flak, so we'll have to drop you a little farther out than intended!"

"That would add extra time just to get to the search area..." Enterprise frowns.

"I think we should drop off the bulk of our force here, and continue on with a smaller advance squad." You say. "The Osprey should be able to maneuver better with less weight, right?"

"That's right." The pilot nods. "And uh, no offense to you ladies, but some of you can get pretty damn heavy."

"Well, I suppose that leaves you and your sisters." Enterprise nods. "You three are the fastest and most experienced."

"Hey hey hey, it doesn't feel right sending them all out by their lonesome." Iowa grunts. "Maybe send a battleship or cruiser to back them up or something?"

You feel a twang of regret when your first thought was to suggest Portland, but she wasn't here now, so it was up to you to call the shots.

"Okay... we'll bring along a cruiser for some extra firepower." You say as you go over your options. There were currently three cruisers with you. San Fran, Dorsie, and Kumano.

San Fran and Dorsie were known quantities, and had plenty of experience. However, it seemed like DesDiv 6 was particularly attached to San Fran, and Dorsie was not exactly familiar with these waters.

Kumano, on the other hand, you knew had been operating in this area for quite a while. However, she was still a bit of an unknown, other than your vague memories of facing off against her in the War at Leyte.

"Okaaaay, Kumano!" You point at the Japanese cruiser. "You'll be up front with us!"

"W-w-w-whaaaaaaa?!?" Kumano yelps in surprise, caught so off guard that she actually drops the thermos of tea she was drinking out of and spills the contents all over her shirt.

However, before Kumano can protest your selection or anybody stop to help her, the Osprey suddenly and precipitously drops altitude.

"We're at the LZ! Go go go!" The pilot urges.

The rest of the force takes their cue and deploys, with Iowa, Kongou, DesDiv 6, cheering and doing cute little poses as they jump out while the more level headed cruisers and carriers just sigh and follow them out.

Kumano meanwhile just sits in her seat, still as a deer in the headlights. Her eyes dart to you and your sisters and back to the open ramp, as if she were considering just leaping out. However, the ramp closes up, robbing her of the chance to escape.

"Hey, Kumano, you okay?" Heerman asks as she steps forward. "Do you need some-"

"Eeeeee!" Kumano squeaks. "I-I-I'm p-perfectly fine!"

Jeez, even when scared to death she still tries to sound refined and proper. Gotta give her some props for that, you guess.

"We'll be over their last known coordinates in five." The pilot updates you.

Short for you, probably an eternity for Kumano.

Well, it looked like she was still nervous around the three of you. Well, it was time to change that! You casually take the seat next to her and Heerman takes the other end. Johnston meanwhile takes the seat directly across from Kumano, who now seemed to shrink to the size a patrol boat.

"Hey there, Kumano, I don't think we were ever formally introduced." You give a friendly smile and hold a hand out to her. "I'm Hoel, and these are my sisters Heerman and Johnston."

"You don't have to be afraid of us." Heerman points out. "The War's already come and gone."

"I-I know that, b-b-but it's just..." Kumano stammers as she tries to regain her nerve. "I can't do this! I don't get why your Captain picked me to come! Didn't he know?! I just want to back home with Suzuya!"

You narrow your eyes. You think you were starting to get it now.

"...it's not just us, is it? You're scared of all of us. Every American ship, aren't you?"

Kumano's eyes widen like dinner plates at your observation, and she silently nods in confirmation.

"Figures. That Captain sure is a sly one." You whistle.

"You're saying he deliberately sent her on this mission to get her to overcome her anxiety?" Heerman frowns.

"Sink or swim is a proven Navy training tactic!" Johnston chimes.

"It's just..." Kumano mumbles as she shifts nervously. "Whenever any of you are around, It's like I'm back there, running for my life but never quite being able to get away..."

Right. You remember reading up about Kumano's history. Apparently she got chased down by the USN so relentlessly that even fucking HALSEY felt sorry for her.

"We're here to watch your back, Kumano." You say with the utmost seriousness and concern. "And we're trusting you to do the same for us. Can we count on you?"

Kumano pauses for a moment, her eyes darting between the three of you before taking a deep breath.

"A-all right. I'll try."

"Great!" You grin and give a thumbs up.

"Yay!" Johnston cheers as she lunges forward and gives Kumano a great big bear hug.

"Ack!" The cruiser croaks.

"I think that was a bit too much too fast." Heerman sighs.

"You girls can kiss and make up later because we're at the LZ!" The pilot grunts. "We're already picking up lots of nasties on radar if you're gonna go you gotta do it now!"

The four of you don't need any further prompting. You and your sisters are the first to leap out the back of the Osprey. Kumano pauses at the lowered ramp for a second, but only a second. She closes her eyes, slaps her own cheeks to pump herself up, and leaps out, her Rig forming up around her before she touches down on the water.

It's job done, the Osprey wheels around and rockets off back the way it came, not at all eager to face the wrath of Abyssal AA guns.

"All right, so where do we go from here..." You from as you pulse your radar. You're immediately cued to dozens of contacts north of you in open water. However, they're all so clustered and far out that you're having trouble figuring out what they are. Probably some Abyssal jamming going on, too. Since Saratoga was a carrier, it would be in her interest to stay out in open water where she could make full use of her top speed to keep ahead of the Abyssals. However...

To the south, your radar is interrupted by a rather large island chain. If things truly were bad, then Sara may have holed up in the islands to stay out of sight, both visually and on radar to avoid Abyssals.

Another pulse pointed at the air reveals dozens of aerial contacts, but you could definitely tell they were all Abyssal. No sign of Sara's fighters in the air. Either she was keeping them grounded or, well, you didn't want to think about the other outcomes at this moment.

"Where to first?" Heerman asks, her guns up and ready.

"Agreed." Heerman nods.

"That's a lot of water to cover, though." Johnston sighs.

"Don't worry." You tap your Rig. "My radar's picking up all the contacts, so we'll just eliminate them one by one."

"S-so what do I do?" Kumano asks.

"Just stick behind us and hit anything bigger than we are." You shrug. "Ya got those big as 8 inch guns, right?"

"Of course!" Kumano nods.

You and your impromptu little squadron continue north, with you keeping a close eye on your radar while your sisters kept watch visually. However, you interest was piqued when you saw a formation of Abyssal aircraft. A LARGE formation, at least four squadrons' worth. That struck you as odd. Normally the Abyssals wouldn't send aircraft in such huge numbers unless...

Unless they had a target.

Sure enough, you immediately start picking up new contacts on your radar. Friendly ones this time as Hellcats start appearing as they climb high enough to be picked up by your air search radar.

Looks like you found Saratoga, but so did the Abyssals. With this many fighters, there had to be an enemy carrier group in the immediate area. Between Saratoga's CAP flights and her own and Hazelwood's AA, they should be able to fight off this wave, giving you an opportunity to hunt down the Abyssal carriers...

"I got a lock on Sara's position!" You bark. "Follow me!"

Your sisters and Kumano fall in behind you as you rev up your engines. Your newer diesel electrics propel you at a blistering speed, outpacing the rest of your squadron by quite a bit until you can finally see the aerial battle. Hellcats dance and weave through the air as they try to fend off the wave of Abyssal bombers attempting to take down their mothership.

And it's here that you finally catch your first glimpse of the famous Big Sis Sara. From a distance, she bore quite a bit of resemblance to Enterprise, though instead of the Winchester repeating rifle Enterprise preferred, Sara was using a full blown Thompson submachine gun.

And next to her was a Fletcher, Hazelwood. As expected, she was practically a mirror image of Luce, Wren, and Daly, but you didn't have time to pick out the visual cues that would differentiate her from the others. As expected both ships' AA guns are roaring at full capacity, throwing lead and fire into the air to support the Hellcats.

You and your sisters' sudden arrival is what tips the balance. Coming in from behind the Abyssals, your own AA suites tear into them from an unexpected angle, effectively annihilating an entire squadron like a mower cuts grass. Kumano manages to catch up and provides her own supporting fire, though hers isn't nearly as accurate.

Soon enough, the Abyssal fighters are mopped up, with only minimal losses to Sara's own CAP flight.

"Thank you very much for the help!" Saratoga smiles as she sails up to her, just as grand and refined as any carrier. "It seems I owe you all a favor!"

"Just doing our jobs." Johnston giggles.

"It's not like we had a choice or anything to come save you...!" Kumano grumbles, trying not to make eye contact.

"Why are you so out of position? Why did you go dark?" Heerman asks.

"Ah, about that..." Saratoga steps aside to show Hazelwood towing another shipgirl. She was beaten and damaged so badly you couldn't even tell right away who she was.

You felt a cold fury bubbling in your stomach. You had the feeling you knew this ship, too!

"My scout planes spotted the Abyssals towing her through the strait, and well, we couldn't just ignore it." Saratoga sighed. "We tried getting word out but it looks like the Abyssals are jamming long range communications. We've been trying to dodge their patrols and search parties until Command would notice our absence..."

"We can't outrun them towing her with us." Heerman points out.

"Who is she?" Johnston frowns as she kneels down to check.

"Don't know." Hazelwood shakes her head. You can briefly see a gap between her teeth where one of them was missing. Whether she back like that or it fell or was knocked out by something, you couldn't tell. "She's been out cold this entire time!"

"Our only chance is link up with the others, then!" Kumano points out.

"They and we would have to fight through the Abyssal blockade, then." Saratoga sighs. "They know we're here and they don't want us getting help."

"We could try heading south to Jakarta." Heerman suggests. "Once we get near land, we can use the islands as cover until we get into the city's defense net."

"Yes, but we'd have to cross a lot of open water, and we'd be harried by Abyssal air attacks the whole way." Saratoga cautions as she checks her collected mags. "I don't know if I have the planes to hold them all off..."

You stop to think for a second. What would Portland do in this situation? What would you? Considering your best bet of relief lay north, you finally settle on your course of action.

"We'll break that blockade." You declare. "The others will be just on the other side. Hopefully we'll be able to hit them from both sides simultaneously."

"It'd be better if we could somehow coordinate with them." Heerman sighs.

"I'd try sending a messenger plane, but I doubt it would get past the AA net." Saratoga shakes her head.

"Well, can't we just draw them off with a feint? We got the speed to do it." Johnston suggests.

"Or we could just break through 'em full speed and full force!" Hazelwood grins, the prominent gap in her teeth becoming more obvious.

"I-I'll just go with whatever you decide." Kumano mumbles.

You sort of figure that you can pull a feint on the Abyssals to draw them away from Sara and the wounded shipgirl. The Abyssals, at least the smaller ones, were never particularly smart, and the ones in this area seemed to be extremely aggressive.

At the very least, you'd probably make it just a bit easier for her to get through.

However, the question would be how much to commit to the feint. Too little, and you risked getting overwhelmed, or not convincing the Abyssals to go after you as a threat. Too much, and you'd give Sara too little cover to safely get through.

"All right, here's how it'll go." You huff. "Me and Kumano will go and draw their their attention. The Abyssals can't ignore a cruiser running around their backline."

You do not mention how the Abyssals apparently have a keen interest in you, which is why they've been hounding you for so long. That would probably contribute, too.

"W-what? We're just going to go in just like that?" Kumano gasps.

"Standard hit and run. Hit 'em quick and fade into the mist. Didn't they teach ya that?" You ask.

"I... I suppose." Kumano nods, still anxiousl.

"The rest of ya will stick close to Sara and make sure she and our friend here get through the blockade." You add. "And me and Kumano here are gonna count on ya bailing us out."

"We'll get her through." Heerman promises.

"And we'll come back and kick butt together!" Hazelwood adds.

"Heh, it's a promise, then." You nod.

"Maybe I'd be able to repay that favor, too!" Sara winks. "Good luck. Stay safe."

"I should be saying that to you!" You laugh.

Kumano remains silent.

"Hey! Kumano!" You snap your fingers in front of the Japanese cruiser's face. "I need ya to focus!"

"W-what?" Kumano is brought of her funk by your sudden attention to her.

"Seriously! We're gonna be diving into the shit I need ya on your A-game!" You grunt as you prod Kumano in the chest with your finger. "I don't care what kind of neuroses you've got right now, but it's time to put on the big lady panties and get to work! You get me?"

"R-right!" Kumano nods, trying to gather up what determination that she can.

"Thank of how cool Suzuya will think you are if we pull this off!" You add.

"RIGHT!" Kumano bellows. Looks like you found her sweet spot.

"Okay! Let's move out, then!" You bellow back.

You wave goodbye to your sisters and Sara as you and Kumano split up from them, moving ahead.

"So what's the plan then, Hoel?" Kumano asks ass he checks her turrets to see if they're working properly.

Well, the two of you were fairly fast, so you could just swoop in and annihilate whatever you could at close range, but that left you two vulnerable to retaliation as well. Then again, between your advanced radar and Kumano's longer ranged 8 inch guns, you could probably shell the Abyssals from a safe enough distance, though you couldn't guarantee that they'd pursue you.

"All right, Kumano, ya gotta trust me on this." You say. "I got real good radar, so I'll tell you where to shoot, so trust me, even ya can't see what you're shooting at, okay?"

"Um, I'll try." Kumano nods, her turrets swiveling forward.

"Great." You nod as you close your eyes to get a better picture with your radar. Already, you can see a rather large fleet of Abyssals. Destroyers, cruisers, battleships, and carriers. A little bit of everything. honestly. You mentally calculate the average range and trajectory of an 8 inch gun.

"Kumano, fire a ranging shot." You instruct.

"Firing!" Kumano nods as a single cannon raises and fires.

Your radar is powerful and precise enough to track the shell in flight, and you suck in all the data you can to get an idea of the quirks and accuracy of Kumano's guns.

"Okay, adjust your fire three degrees to the left..."

You continue to direct Kumano's fire as her shells rain down on the Abyssal formations. However, the initial shells aren't too accurate and the Abyssals, though alerted, don't really take the beat However, you note where all of the shells land based on the splashes they briefly make when they touch down into the water and continue to relay corrections.

Finally, Kumano starts scoring hits, her shells landing solidly on the enemy contacts.

And finally, you can see several Abyssals break off from the blockade. Only about six ships, though. Not nearly what you were hoping for, but you hope that it's enough to give Your sisters and Sara just a little more chance at breaking through.

"Get ready, Kumano." You grin as you load up your own cannons. "Now we get to the hard part."
