>Information

This quest takes place long before the events of The Last Airbender. Long before Aang, Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk, or Yangchen. You play as a young Earthbender from a small village in one of the many Kingdoms scattered across the main continent. As a powerful villain strives to dominate the world, you will be forced to make choices that can stop it, aid it, or have no effect whatsoever.

>Rules

After each update I make, there will be a voting period of ten minutes. Once ten minutes have passed, whatever option has the most support will be the winner.

Write-ins are accepted, but only when specified If you see a write-in option, suggest whatever you like. If not, choose from the options I have provided.

Sometimes, rolls will be required. I will assign them, and they will operate under a d100 system. You will have three chances, and if one of the rolls succeeds, you pass. There are no crits, but I do take into account how much you succeed or fail by.

I reserve the right to veto certain write-ins, but will try to avoid doing so.

I hope you all have fun

Let's rock.
>>
"Run," you tell the soldiers. "Unless you want to end up like him."

"This guy's crazy!" one of the soldiers yells. "I'm getting out of here!"

Several of Kalana's men begin to flee, while some of the others try to convince them to stand and fight. With that distraction in play, you rush back toward Sansha, picking up the Hunter's other sword along the way.

Reaching Sansha's side, you find that she's staring at you wide-eyed and slack-jawed, clearly having difficulty processing what she just witnessed.

"That was incredible," she tells you.

Deciding that now is not the time to bask in praise, you hand her the two swords, and scoop her up in your arms. You launch yourself on a pillar of Earth, landing on the archway overlooking the courtyard.

The Airbenders are winning.

Groups of monks and students stand throughout the courtyard, moving with grace and speed that allows them to outmaneuver most of their foes. You frown, seeing several Airbenders among the fallen, but the numbers of Kalana's soldiers far outweigh those belonging to the Air Nomads.

And, you see, to your great relief, that Doyu and Mauya are both alive, with the Waterbender tending to the wounded, and Doyu fighting with his Airbending brothers. Bison fly through the sky, but almost all of them are occupied by Airbenders, making you wonder if they managed to take the Bison from Kalana's forces, or just went to the stables.

And, near the far side of the courtyard, you spot Lantana, launching herself up on a pillar of Earth, and, to your amazement, using wind to give herself an extra boost and push herself over the wall. She disappears on the other side, but you know that all that's really there is the library.

What is she up to?

With the battle still raging, you move down from the archway, weaving your way through the chaos as you make your way toward Mauya, whose eyes widen as she looks up and sees you approaching with Sansha in your arms.

Heeding Mauya's warning, you stop your rush, and move your arms as best you can, rising up on a pillar of Earth that takes you high above the battlefield.

Growling from below causes you to look down, and you see what had Mauya so worried. The Shirshu the Hunter had previously used to travel scurries around the bottom of your pillar, turning its snouted face upward and giving an angry roar in your direction.

Where it currently stands, you could probably drop it into a pit fairly easily. But you find yourself distracted a moment later when Sansha lets out a fearful cry, and you turn your head just in time to see an arrow bounce off of one of her blades.

Judging by where the sword is being held, Sansha just saved you from taking an arrow to the neck. You look in the direction the shot must have come from, and spot a Sky Bison circling around, two archers sitting on its back and taking aim.

You hear growling below, and as you glance down, you see the Shirshu beginning to climb your pillar.

Moving quickly, you create another pillar of Earth, and prepare to jump over to it. Unfortunately for you, just before you can make the leap, the Shirshu's tongue lashes out, striking you in the ankle.

You fall forward, off the platform, and begin to plummet toward the ground below. Sansha throws her arms around you, clinging to you as the two of you head toward great injury, or perhaps even death.

However, at the last moment, Doyu gets beneath the two of you, and slows your descent with a burst of wind. That doesn't stop the two of you from crashing on top of him, but it does prevent anyone from getting seriously injured.

At least, you don't think you're injured. But, for some reason, you can't seem to move a single muscle.

"Sei!" Doyu shouts as he picks himself up. "Sei, are you okay?"

"The Shirshu got him," Sansha explains as she struggles to stand. "He'll be paralyzed for a little while."

"Great," Doyu mutters as the creature comes down from the pillar, snarling at him and Sansha.

"Listen to me, Doyu," Sansha tells the Airbender. "I want you to use your bending to shoot me at that thing as fast as possible."

He gives her a look of concern, and begins to protest. "Sansha, you can barely stand-"

"I don't need to do more than that if you do your job right," she tells him, readying her blades. "Just wait for the Shirshu to start charging, and then send me flying."

Doyu gives in, nodding and getting ready. When the Shirshu charges, he thrusts both hands toward Sansha's back, throwing her forward with a powerful wind, right at the monstrous beast.

Its mouth opens, and its tongue snaps at Sansha, who thrusts one sword in front of her body, and uses the other in an attempt to swat the tongue aside. The latter endeavor fails, however, and you see her body go rigid. But, her one arm is still held out in front of her, gripping the sword tightly.

She collides with the beast, and her sword sinks right into its head. However, you also see her arm snap back at an awkward angle upon impact, and you know that it's been broken. As the beast collapses, Sansha cries out in pain, falling stiff right in front of it.

"Sansha!" Doyu shouts, rushing toward the girl, not seeing the archers above take aim.

"Mauya, heal him!" you shout to the Waterbender from your spot on the ground.

You can't see if she's moving to do as you've said, but you quickly hear Sansha's voice shouting for her to stay back.

"It's already too late!" the warrior shouts. "Stay where you are, and somebody take down that archer!"

All you can do is lie there helplessly, staring ahead at two friends; one who is defenseless and badly wounded, and the other, who has been killed. Rage and grief vie for dominance within you, not that it matters what emotion takes control. You're unable to do anything until this paralysis passes.

Shouts and cries of pain surround you. Howling wind, whizzing arrows, crumbling earth, and raging fires fill your ears as the battle continues. You aren't sure how long you remain on the ground like that, but it feels like an eternity before you feel a pair of hands on your body, and a warmth spreading through you.

Suddenly able to move again, you roll over and find yourself staring up at Mauya, whose face is red, and eyes are producing many tears.

"I-I need you to cover me while I help Sansha," she tells you, seeming to be struggling with speaking. "We can't lose her, too."

Climbing to your feet, you run by Mauya's side as she makes her way toward Sansha. Fortunately for both of you, the archer from before has either been dealt with, or moved on to other targets, and you have no attacks to deal with until you actually reach Sansha. By then, you've created an angular wall over the three of you, and any arrows fired your way bounce right off.

Mauya kneels by Sansha's side, administering healing to the young warrior. Sansha voices her gratitude and attempts to stand, only to hiss in pain.

"I need to fix up your feet," Mauya tells her. "Give me a second."

"Thank you for the help," you tell Mauya.

She glances back at you, a frown on her face and a fresh round of tears coming to her eyes.

"It wasn't enough," she tells you in a tone of pure misery, and returns to treating Sansha.

"Shanso, what just happened?!" you hear one of the young Air Nomads shout from the other side of your wall. "Are you-"

He's cut off, and you hear the sounds of him gasping for air.

Thinking that the coast is clear, you emerge from your cover, surveying the situation and deciding what to do next.

The fighting seems to have come to an end. Bodies lay strewn throughout the courtyard, some belonging to Air Nomads, but many more wearing the clothing that marks them as members of Kalana's force. In the sky above, several Sky Bison are flying away.

Groups of Air Nomads that are still standing tend to the wounded and look over the dead. A few members of Kalana's force are surrounded by Air Nomads, and have stopped fighting.

The battle is over.

With the battle over, you suppose it's time to take care of the fallen. Lowering the wall that shielded you and your friends, you make your way toward Doyu, who lies where you last saw him; face-down in the courtyard, an arrow lodged in his head.

Sansha and Mauya come to stand beside you as you look down at the body, feeling tears fighting to break free.

"I'm sorry," Sansha tells him. "I'm sorry you lost your life protecting mine. You were a brave man, and I am proud to have called you friend."

There are tears streaming down her face, and her voice is cracking with sorrow, but she's keeping herself from breaking down completely, at least for the moment.

"I'm sorry I couldn't save you," Mauya says miserably. "I'm sorry I was useless."

You try not to cry, but find yourself unable to help it. The tears free themselves and cascade down your face before falling to the ground below. You stand between Mauya and Sansha, the three of you united in grief over the loss of a friend.

You feel almost dizzy, and a sort of numbness seems to wash over your body. A small part of your mind tries to convince you that this is all some sort of dream, but you know better than that. You're wide awake, and your friend is gone.

Movement out of the corner of your eye grabs your attention, and you spot Lantana, running as fast as she possibly can toward the temple. You aren't sure if she's noticed you or not, but whatever the case, she has a look of dread on her face, and runs as if her life depends on it.

It's hard to leave Doyu now, but something urgent is clearly going on. Without a word, you take off after Lantana, tearing across the courtyard and entering the temple.

Before long, you spot Lantana approaching the entryway to the area where the Masters of the Temple meet. Once again, you see your friend display new Airbending ability, activating the door and running down a long hallway.

You follow, making it in just before the door shuts, and continue in the same direction as the Avatar. Lantana stops halfway down the hallway, looking over something before continuing onward, as fast as ever.

Reaching the halfway point yourself, you find an old monk lying slumped against the wall. A quick glance tells you that he'll never move from that spot again, not from his own doing, at least.

The hiss of another door opening draws your attention, and you dash down the hallway, making it through just before the door shuts. By then, Lantana has already reached the center of the room, where she kneels beside a mortally-wounded Airbender.

The chamber is a complete mess; statues have been smashed, chairs overturned and scattered, daggers littering the floor, with more than once stained with blood.

Approaching the room's center, you're suddenly thrown back as Lantana spins around, yelling in a rage and sending a jet of air right into you. Her eyes go wide as you hit the ground, and she gasps in surprise.

"Sei, I'm so sorry!" she tells you.

"It's alright," you tell her. "I don't blame you for being jumpy. What's going on?"

"Kalana...." the Airbender gasps from the floor, the voice telling you that it's a woman, and making her identity fairly clear.

Stepping forward, you find yourself looking down at an old woman with white hair, and a bald spot upon which there is a blue arrow tattoo.

Rinzen, you presume.

Her clothing is badly ripped, she's bruised in several places, and you notice more than one stab wound on her body. If the way she's currently breathing is any indication, she won't survive for long.

"She got the scroll, didn't she?" Lantana asks with dread as she turns toward the old woman.

Rinzen nods. "I'm afraid so."

Lantana's hands clench into fists, her face twisting in anger. "If you had the scroll, then why did you send me away?! I could have helped you, we could have stopped her here!"

Rinzen shakes her head, her expression sad. "No, had you stayed, we both would have died. I had to face my student, but you are not ready for her yet. It was important that you remain alive."

"More important than keeping her from getting the scroll?" Lantana growls. "There's no telling what she'll do now!"

Rinzen chuckles, but that quickly turns to coughing. "Of course there is. She will use the scroll to find what she is searching for."

Swordwaifu4lyfe.

The avatar will always place her job over any romantic notions

The avatar has better abs now, but over time sansha will pull ahead. Bending is based on tai chi and several other martial arts. While good for overall fitness these are not known for giving you killer abs. Training yourself to foght benders however would result in a great deal of necessary wieght training and toning, sprints and other conditioning. Sansha will eventually be an ab beast, and have killer legs and thighs.

Swords are cool.

"Didn't you already say that it's in the Si Wong Desert?" you ask Rinzen.

"Yes, but the desert is massive," Rinzen replies. "And, the library is hidden. Without knowing where you're going, you could spend years searching for it."

Great. You have little to no idea where you're going, but Kalana knows exactly where the library is located. She'll almost certainly get there long before you can reach it, and there's no telling what sort of information she might be searching for.

"Do you have a plan?" you ask Lantana hopefully.

Looking at her face, you can see that she's thinking hard about what to do about this. You can also see that she's not coming with any quick fixes to this.

"Rinzen, you know exactly where the library is, don't you?" Lantana asks. "Can you give us directions?"

"I can tell you how to reach it, but I fear Kalana will still reach it well before you do," Rinzen tells her. "And, if what you've told me is true, there will still be her army to deal with."

"Maybe, instead of racing Kalana, we should focus on having you master the elements," you tell Lantana. "A full powered Avatar could end this quickly."

Lantana gives you a look of horror at your suggestion. "And if we go off to have me train for spirits-know how long, there's no telling how many people Kalana and her army could kill or conquer. We have to stop them as soon as we can."

"How?" you ask her.

Lantana goes silent. She knows that you have a good point. Your full group working together couldn't defeat Kalana. If you chase her half-way around the world and track her through a desert, what are you going to do once you find her? She almost killed all of you already, and she somehow managed to defeat a powerful Airbending Master, the one who taught her, no less. Maybe she's getting stronger.

"You are not ready to face Kalana," Rinzen tells Lantana. "However, there's no telling what she'll do when she finds the library."

The Airbending Master erupts into another coughing fit. When she speaks again, her voice is incredibly weak.

"I'm sorry I placed this burden on your shoulders, Lantana," she tells your friend. "And I'm sorry I can't tell you how to deal with it. But, I know you will find a way..."

You hear the last breath leave her body, and she goes still

You remain silent for a moment, giving her time to grieve. But, you can't delay telling her the other tragic news for long, and ultimately, you inform her of Doyu's death.

With a choked, grief-filled sob, Lantana punches the ground, which cracks beneath her fist, the fissures spreading to all corners of the room. Just one more blemish on what was once a beautiful and peaceful place.

Lantana's body shakes, and she dissolves into flat-out sobbing, lowering her head to the ground and bringing her knees in toward her stomach.

But, you still find that you have to try, and you stay there with her as the sobbing gradually lessens in volume, and the shaking slowly turns to mild trembling.

After some time (you aren't exactly sure how long), she slowly pushes herself off the ground, sitting beside you. Her face is red, her eyes bloodshot and full of misery.

She says nothing, possibly still unable to speak. Any thoughts of asking her about plans for the next move are pushed away. Now is not the time.

Not knowing what else to do, you give Lantana a hug. She doesn't hug you back, but she doesn't try to pull away either. After a few moments, you tell her that it would probably be a good idea to find Sansha and Mauya.

Numbly, Lantana allows you to help her up and guide her out of the chamber. You lead her down the hall, and out into the courtyard, where you see the Air Nomads gathering their fallen. Sansha and Mauya aren't hard to spot, the two of them still standing over Doyu.

When they see you and Lantana approaching, they leave their fallen friend to walk over to you. Lantana, however, runs past them, kneeling beside the body of the fallen Airbender.

Sansha throws a sympathetic look back toward Lantana before looking at you.

"She lost a friend, and her mentor," you answer. "She needs time."

"Rinzen's dead?" Mauya asks in shock.

You nod.

"But how is that possible?" Mauya asks. "These soldiers weren't that good. The only Airbenders they were able to kill were students and young people."

Sansha gives you a curious look as well. "Did an archer get a lucky shot? Did she get ambushed?"

Sighing, you shake your head. "Kalana."

Figuring that they should probably know what's going on, you tell the girls about the scroll that Kalana took, and that you're trying to convince Lantana to master the elements before dealing with this.

"It would be best for Lantana to fight when she's at her strongest," Sansha admits. "But, at the same time, as Lantana grows stronger, Kalana will as well."

>A. Lantana's the Avatar. Kalana can only bend one element. Lantana's best will be better

"Lantana's the Avatar," you remind Sansha. "Kalana can only bend one element. Lantana's best will be better than Kalana's best. And, unless Kalana can destroy the library, we'll be able to use it, too."

"How?" Mauya asks. "Do you know where it is?"

"The Si Wong Desert," you answer.

The two girls stare at you like you're an idiot.

"Sei, do you know how large the Si Wong Desert is?" Sansha asks you. "Or how hard it is to get through there without being killed?"

"If Rinzen didn't tell you where it was, and Kalana took the scroll with directions, we'll never find it on our own," Mauya tells you. "So that plan's dead."

"And I wouldn't just assume that Lantana will be unstoppable when she masters the elements," Sansha tells you. "No fighter is invincible, and Avatars have been killed in battle before. We have no idea what Kalana might learn, or how many people will be helping her in a fight with Lantana."

"Why don't we head to the North Pole?" you suggest.

You notice Mauya's hands clench into fists immediately, and her body stiffen a bit. But, she doesn't say anything, and you continue.

"It's close, and Lantana already knows some Waterbending," you say. "She could finish her training, and we could get some allies."

Mauya scowls, shaking her head. "She can't finish her training there."

Frowning, Sansha looks over at her. "Why not?"

"Women aren't allowed to be Waterbenders in the Northern Water Tribe," Mauya spits. "No exceptions, even for the Avatar."

"As much as I dislike their ideas about women, they are much closer than the South Pole," Sansha chimes in. "Are you sure that they'll turn away the Avatar?"

"Avatar Untha was born in the North Pole," Mauya tells her. "And she was exiled when she refused to give up her bending, despite being the Avatar."

"How do you even know all of this?" you ask her.

"Nevermind that!" Mauya snaps. "My point is that we shouldn't bother going there. We need to pick a different place."

She smiles. "Thanks, but it was nothing next to you going one man army out there. I didn't thank you for saving my life, did I?"

"What was all of that stuff with you asking me to leave you behind?" you ask.

She frowns. "Sei, I know we're friends, and that you care about me. But I'm really not all that important. Wasting time saving me could have meant you weren't around to save Lantana if she needed it."

"You're just as important to me as Lantana is," you tell her. "Besides, if you weren't around, I would have been a goner when that Shirshu attacked me."

Smiling once again, Sansha steps toward you. Before you can ask what she's doing, she wraps her arms around you in an awkward hug. It's pretty clear that she isn't very used to physical displays of affection, but you do get the message. You're important to her, and she appreciates that she's important to you.

Stepping back, she looks slightly uncomfortable from the whole hugging thing, but she changes the subject rather quickly.

"Can you do me a favor and check on Mauya?" she asks you. "She's beating herself up a lot about what happened to Doyu."

Just as an aside, Som, you've become a much better writer/storyteller since I've been following your work. Actually creating characters that people can give a shit about, and dealing with stuff other than conflict. It's good!

Inside Som's mind:
"What do I like?"
"Despair."
"Okay, how do I get despair?"
"Give the players something they love, and give them the chance to save it, or lose it, as a result of their own actions"
"Eventually they will make the wrong choice, lose what they love, feel sad, and it will be their fault."
"Okay. How do I do this"
"I know how to save things and take them away"
"I know! I must learn to create lovable characters!"

And so, in order to learn Despair, SOM first had to learn Love.

She sighs, looking down. "Yeah, but not all of them. I couldn't save Doyu, and who knows how many others?"

"Yeah, but who knows how many more would have died without you?" you ask her. "Instead of focusing on what you couldn't do, focus on what you were able to do."

Mauya looks up at you, and you see the faintest trace of a smile on her face.

"Besides," you add. "You give me someone to mess with."

She rolls her eyes, leaning back. "Right, my life truly has purpose, then."

"In all seriousness, you're my friend, and I'm glad to have you with me," you tell Mauya.

This time, a full smile comes to Mauya's face. "Likewise."

The smile vanishes. "But if you tell anybody that, I'll have to kill you."

Chuckling, you say goodnight and leave her room, going to check on Lantana.

Knocking on the Avatar's door, you find no answer. After waiting for nearly a minute, you come to the conclusion that you won't be getting one. Either she's asleep, or she's gone to the stables.

Not ready to return to sleep just yet, you decide to make your way to the stables. With any luck, you'll find Lantana there. If nothing else, you can pay Pengsong and Gava a visit.

Upon your arrival, you find that Lantana is indeed there, standing between the two great creatures. She seems to be trying to hug Pengsong, while also petting Gava. The former does not seem pleased with sharing attention, but he refrains from making a scene about it. Perhaps he can tell that Lantana's emotional state is poor at the moment.

When he sees you coming, however, he lets out a low growl, as if telling you to go away.

Deciding that Pengsong may be right in telling you to leave Lantana alone, you decide to listen to his "Advice", and return to your room. You make your way to the sleeping area, open your door, and head to bed.

Unsurprisingly, sleep that night is far from as restful as you'd hoped. Your dreams are plagued with visions and sounds that make your stomach churn, and when you awake, your eyes are wet.

Looking out the window, you see that the sun is barely beginning to rise. Odds are, everyone else is still asleep.

Everyone is probably still sleeping, and you decide to head back to the stables. When you get there, you find that Lantana is still there, curcled up and asleep with her head resting on Pengsong, and her lower body on Gava's tail.

The two beasts wake as you approach, with Gava looking toward you silently, and Pengsong growling lowly, as if telling you to go away and let them sleep.

It doesn't seem right for Doyu to have such a small, simple grave. He saved you and your friend more than once, tried to teach Lantana Airbending, guided you all to the temple, and helped to stop a monster during the battle. He gave his life trying to save a friend, and you want for him to be remembered.

Using your bending, you erect a statue of Doyu sitting atop Pengsong, waving and smiling as he did in life.

After taking a moment to admire your handiwork, you bow your head in respect, and silently say your goodbyes to your friend.

Leaving your first bit of handiwork behind, you make your way to the library, avoiding the use of a bison by raising a pillar of Earth to get you over the walls. When you reach the library, you find it mostly empty, save a few old monks sorting through books and scrolls, or sitting at tables. A few of them recognize you, and give polite greeting as you make your way to a table, taking a seat and beginning to write.

You recount what's occurred over the past few days, leaving out anything too personal, of course. Once you reach the battle, you go into great detail about what you did, saw, and learned, and especially about Doyu's death. You paint him in a heroic light, depicting him giving his life while trying to help a friend, and how he defeated a dangerous beast before being caught off-guard. Hopefully, people will remember him.

You aren't sure how much time's passed when you finish your chapter, but it's clearly been a while, as a certain Waterbender has come looking for you.

"Hey, there you are," she says, approaching the table. "What are you writing?"

The fact that we're writing -now- doesn't necessarily mean that we were writing before, and therefore does not reveal that we were lying before.

Mauya's clearly been made suspicious by your changing of the subject. At this point, trying to lie to her might not be the best idea. So, you do the unexpected and tell the truth, informing her that you're writing about what's been happening at the temple, including the battle and what became of Doyu.

Appearing surprised and curious, Mauya takes a seat at the table, reading through what you have written. You sit there patiently until she's finished.

She seems enthralled by what you've written, and you can't help but feel a little proud. Mauya's probably the most critical of you, yet here she is, telling you that you've done some amazing work.

"Do you want some tea?" you ask Mauya, rising from your bed.

"Hmm?" she asks, glancing over at you. "Oh, sure, thanks."

You've never actually made tea before, but you figure that it can't be too difficult. Everything you need has been supplied by the Air Nomads, so you get to work, getting a kettle all ready, and pouring a cup for Mauya.

"Thank you," she says, taking the cup from you and blowing on it. She takes a sip, and you can tell from the expression on her face that it's pretty bad. Still, she continues to drink it as she continues reading.

"Sei, I don't understand how you're such a fantastic writer," she tells you, leaning back when she's done.

As the two of you step out of your room, you ask Mauya what she thinks of going to the Volcanic Islands.

"It's going to be tough getting there," she tells you. "We'll have to move through Kalana's territory, and then we'll have to cross the ocean to reach it."

Looks like you're off on another difficult journey. Hopefully this one ends better than the previous excursion.

Hey SOM

Any chance we can get word to Tong through his ubiquitous knowledge seekers? Even a weeks delay of kalanas plans could be immensly beneficial. And we do have the avatar, emmisary to the spirit world and conduit of some such or other.

Are the airbenders likely to provide a mentor for Lantana? Mastering an element is much easier when you have a master. The old sparring guy would be a good choice! We need more wise mentoring on this trip.

The northern water tribe sound like dicks. How hard would it have been to convince them to stop being dicks and train the avatar?

Avatar Aang had a lot of problems when traveling across the world. Occassionally he was even forced to retreat. Is our trip to the volcanic islands going to be that bad?

What color was doyus hair if he had let it grow out?

Why are you so good at making likeable, waifuable characters?
Is it so we will feel utter despair when you kill them?

How does the spirit world at large feel about Kalana, assuming they knew about her and had to form an opinion.

What, in your opinion, is the dumbest hybrid in the series?

Best pet, Gava or Pengsong?

Will we ever get to meet anonymous archer murderer of Doyu?
>>
I know the airbenders will be reluctant to fight directly, but surely we could convince them to spread word of kalanas army and try to convince the various kingdoms to band together?

I mean if airbenders are counseling war the situation must be serious.

Were you planning for us to veer off to another part of the world, or did you expect us to beeline to the spirit library?

What is your favorite weapon in avatar, and why is it hook swords?
