You are Adrian Brown, a twenty five year-old third-year medical student living an otherwise normal American life in search of employment. That was until you woke up inside a derelict and demon-infested hospital with four other victims of short-term memory loss. Together, the five of you managed to somehow survive by negotiating with demons and defeating those that were not so amicable. And upon escaping, the all of you realized that it wasn’t as simple as that.

Task Force 666 a multinational organization dedicated to combating hostile demons and those that would use them for ill intentions. And the hellhole you just went through? That was your ‘job interview’, one that you passed with flying colors. When properly offered employment as an agent among the ranks, you accepted without too much hesitation or second thoughts. Duty to humanity and whatnot.

You are now a Devil Summoner in the service of the Task Force, and the de-facto leader of East Coast Operations Division IV Carina Squad. It is your duty to protect mankind from all threats involving the demonic, but how you choose to carry out your orders is entirely up to you. The choices you make shall not only affect those around you, but the fate of the entire world itself…

[Thursday, July 4th, 2015, 7:46 AM]

Your dreams are mercifully devoid of any content, from neo-pagan goddesses or any images from the prior day. The moment you and Brady returned to your lodgings, he staggered off to the baths in the hopes of cleaning the slime off his clothes and body. You’re not quite sure what Hairy Jack had prior to literally showering his new master with affection, but it’s enough to make the others stir uncomfortably in their own sleep.

In any other circumstance, you’d follow suit and hit the showers before you hit the sack, but the events of the day have had you too fatigued. Because the instant you flop down onto your bed after typing a quick report to Central, you’re asleep before you know it. One moment, you’re glancing at the others in the room, Victoria softly snoring into Fitz’s shoulder and MacKay sprawled on the couch. The next, the sun is up and shining straight into your face.

The five of you groggily pull yourselves out of bed, wincing past the bruises and pains as you stagger towards the showers. The warm water, flowing out of a mesh-like sieve with a tug of a vine, is a balm against your aches, cleansing them from your body along with the dirt and grime. And the towels themselves are decent, a gauzy fabric that smells of mint and doesn’t feel too much like spider webs.

Breakfast is laid out on the table, a wide selection of breads, fruits and vegetables, by the time the five of you return to the central suite. You recall tales of brownies, the fairies that preferred to go unseen (as opposed to MacKay’s own demon), who clean and perform domestic tasks for the household. This must be their doing as well.

Brady confirms your inquiry with a nod. “Yeah. Little buggers are damned helpful, I tell you. Really appreciate them, no kidding. I had roommates that couldn’t keep their sides of the damned dorm tidy for the life of them.”

Huh. Well, that certainly explained the fresh bedsheets and ironed clothes. Little guys work fast, you definitely have to give them that.

“Happy Fourth of July, God blesh America, yada-yada-yada..” Fitz mutters, yawning past the apple in her mouth before continuing, “Aw, my bad…so, what’s next? There’s still one demon out there somewhere. And nothin’ else that needs to be done, as far as I know.”

Victoria steeples her fingers together in a pensive pose. “Our mission here had two components. Investigate the missing children and check whether or not the fairies are innocent. Fies. We successfully finished the latter half of the mission. Uh…did you let Alger know, Adrian?”

You nod at the mechanic. “Yeah. I typed up a report just before I turned in.”

“And the demons seem to know of it as well,” Brady nods. “We did well on that part. The fairies had nothing to do with the kidnappings. Like they said. Or, what Titania said way back in D.C.”

The mention of the Queen’s name has MacKay peer up from his cereal. “Adrian, didn’t…didn’t Titania wish for us to visit the Sidhe Court? To thank the two of us for that whole debacle with the, uh, seedbed. In the event that we have additionally proved her subjects’ innocence, I would think it proper to take a short visit to the court and officially inform her of the matter.”

The hacker frowns. “I said that they already knew. Wouldn’t that be redundant, just…strutting in to say something that’s agiven?”

“Maybe,” Fitz shrugs, munching on a piece of toast, “But if there’s one thing I learned in the department, it’s that kissin’ the ass of the brass doesn’t hurt. Most’a the time. Still…visitin’ the queen might shave off a few hours spent huntin’ down the last demon. Hours we might need considerin; the fuck-huge size of the forest.”

“I don’t see why we can’t take our time,” Victoria points out. “If the scans are correct, then the demon isn’t going anywhere. Not with escape routes into the real world heavily guarded by Sidhe forces.”

As one, the four Devil Summoners turn towards you.

“It’s your call, Adrian,” MacKay offers. “I just adding my input as per my position in the team.”

“Let’s pay Titania a visit,” You decide, “I think it would seem rude of us not to inform her ourselves. You know, it’s just a courtesy call, like Fitz said. And, MacKay, you’re right. I don’t want her to sit on the reward any longer than she has to. Might think that we’re unappreciative, or something.”

Your party nods, making motions to quickly finish their own breakfasts. Fitz seems a little put-off, but she doesn’t make too much of a show about it. “Got a point there,” she mutters, shoveling the last bit of scrambled eggs off her plate, “But we gotta haul ass as soon as we wrap up. I don’t want that sunovabitch out there any longer than he needs to be.”

>Fitz disapproves -1

It takes you the better half of twenty minutes to completely gear up, and another ten to make your way down the thoroughfare of the main road. In the early summer morning, the fairy kingdom shows signs of activity, with demons going about their business just as any ordinary human would. Goblins haggle over the price of fish as Pixies gossip with their neighbors. A team of Dwarves push a cart laden with bronze ore, swerving around a jogging Troll, cursing and spitting at the speeding demon in the language of demons.

Your presence does not go unnoticed. Demons wave at you from the side, either shooting toothy smiles or gestures of approval as you pass their respective positions. At one point, a swarm of something flies over your head, showering the entire squad in flower petals. Brady is absolutely preening with the attention, even as MacKay rubs the back of his head in embarrassment. Victoria blinks the impromptu confetti out of her eyes as Fitz suppresses a sneeze.

All the while the fey continue to display nothing short of cheer for Squad Carina. Guess they really are grateful for proving their innocence. Especially considering how much power the Task Force has. Even without their Queen in service to Commander Alger.

Following the main road leads you out of the entanglement of trees, and up a gradual incline. The sides of the road, the grass beyond the well-trodden dirt, breaks away, the ground shattered and cracked as their edges drop off into a great ravine. And all the way at the end of the road, sheltered by a crescent gouge in the earth, your destination awaits you: the Great Tree of the Tuatha de Danann, and the Sidhe Court of Fairy Queen Titania.

>Line Break

To his credit, Brady only takes one selfie, much to Victoria’s amusement and Fitz’s snort of derision. Shaking your head at the antics of your teammates, you present yourselves to the guards at the door. A pair of High Pixies, clad in their silver armor, keeps watch at the main gates, with stern looks on androgynous features. They stand to attention at your arrival.

“State your business, humans.”

You nod your head, high enough to show establishment of a pecking order, but low enough to provide gracious acknowledgement.“We wish to present ourselves to Queen Titania, and give an account of our adventures. Additionally, the Queen herself requested the presence of myself and my second-in-command.”

The guards exchange looks, before returning their attention to you. “Wait right here,” The one on the left says, motioning for a soldier to come forward. At a sharp gesture, a Pixie zips towards her superior. After whispering a set of instructions and bidding their subordinate to fly, she continues, “It shouldn’t take longer than a few minutes.”

As a matter of fact, it only takes one minute and thirty five seconds. Just when the five of you settle into a comfortable position on the rocks, the messenger comes back, excitingly whispering instructions into the sentinel’s ear.

“You may enter,” The captain enters, gesturing for the soldiers to stand aside and let you pass. “The Queen is expecting you.”

You politely thank her and gesture for the squad to get up and move. Even with the first step into the hollowed trunk of the tree, you feel a change in the air as soon as you stand within the shadow that the tree casts. You can’t describe it, really, it’s…too abstract of a feeling to put to words.

But you can say that whatever it is, it’s really working. All your aches and pains are vanishing as if they had never existed, and a single breath of the crisp, rich air is fresher than anything you’ve ever had, even within the realm of the fey. And from the looks of your companions, they’re feeling it too. Especially Brady, who audibly sighs in relief as he twists his back at every few intervals.

A large platform, easily twenty feet across and carved out of the base, throbs with magical power. It virtually hums as one of the fey retainers beckons you to step forward, where you can see high above into the tree from a hole in the ceiling. At every twenty feet or so, there’s another hole, and another, and ad infinatum until you reach the top of the Sidhe Court.

As soon as you are all standing on the platform, the retainer casts a spell. The base lurches, along with the five of you, before it slowly begins to rise from off the ground, gradually gaining speed as you ascend through the tree.

Fitz grins, hair billowing in the rushing winds, even as Victoria latches onto her with a pale expression on her face. Huh. Guess she isn't too fond of heights. And from the way Brady turns a mild shade of green...he isn't either.

Too many floors later, you reach the top, where the platform slows down to a crawl before coming to a complete stop. Blue light flares around the edges, sealing the platform in place with the surrounding wood as you stagger off of the magical elevator. A quick look around you confirms that you are in an antechamber of some sort, a small room that’s only a dozen or so square meters in size.

But it pales in comparison to what lies north of your position. Beyond a gate of vines and flowers, down a red carpet flanked by a dozen elite Pixie Guard each side, Queen Titania sits upon a wooden throne, inside of an ornate room that screams of dedication to nature.

There are no suits of armor on display, no great tapestries of any sort, objects you’d expect to find in a royal court. Instead, large arrangements of flowers and stone sculptures take precedent, along with trophies and artifacts that hang from the walls. Weapons, magical artifacts, and...you have to blink, squinting at what looks like a copy of the Book of Kells. Your eyes drift, eventually settling on a red spear, right underneath a mounted head of an Orthus demon.

The expression on Queen Titania ‘s face is one of absolute boredom as you approach her throne, with one tentative step at a time. As soon as you reach a reasonable distance, you bow low, motioning for the others to follow suit.

“Rise,” She eventually says, even as she inspects the nails on her right hand. “Devil Summoners of the Grey Order, subordinates of Commander Alger…you have come to my throne room, seeking an audience. You are very welcome to our places of power, but what brings you here, in the middle of your mission?”

“I have the pleasure of informing you that the party responsible for the kidnappings have been identified.”

She raises a pensive eyebrow, setting her hand to tap at the armrest of her throne. “Oh? And who is responsible for besmirching the name of the Sidhe? Who would dare try to cast aspersions onto my people?”

You gesture to Brady, who falls in line beside you. His fingers dance across his COMP, and the holographic interface flares up in front of the Queen. The five demons you’ve killed are displayed prominently on the screen: four mothmen, one windigo, and shiwanna, a Pueblo demon of ice according to the report that HQ sent to you at breakfast.

“Six demons were sealed into a grimoire, belonging to Joseph Putnam of colonial Massachusetts. Somehow, the grimoire wound up in Lebanon’s museum, and the demons broke out of their confines. They’ve been harvesting magnitite from children, abducting them from orphanages and secluded areas where there wouldn’t be many witnesses.”

Titania sits up, and her wings flutter as she leans in for a closer inspection. She purses her lips, clicking her tongue in annoyance before reclining once more on her seat. “Ah. Demons native to the New World. I should have foreseen this. Regardless, you state six demons, but only bring five to present to me. I take it then, that you are on the hunt for this last demon?”

“Yes, your majesty.”

She hums at that, seemingly pleased. “Do you know why they were harvesting magnetite?”

“No, your majesty.”

“I would very much like to know the reason,” She says, the smile on her cherry lips not quite reaching her eyes. “That is, if you can manage to hold back in its complete and utter destruction. I for one would find it hard to control my temper if I stood before the one responsible.

“And now, you must take to the hunt in the woods. Very well, then. I will instruct my soldiers to grant you access into the outermost layers of Tanglebriar, should the demon be foolish enough to find refuge in that fetid place.”

Titania pauses, casting her eyes on the five of you with a considering light. “And you have informed your order that we are innocent of any wrongdoing?”

You nod. “Yes, your majesty.”

The silk of her dress shifts as she changes positions, this time shifting one creamy leg to rest atop another. “I will be blunt. As much as I care about your missing children, my people’s safety comes first and foremost among all others. You have seen this only two days prior.”

MacKay exhales heavily, and your eyes meet his as the memories of the seedbed flash in the front of your minds.

“Regardless,” she continues, rising from her seat, wings beating in the air as she descends from the raised dais at where her throne sits. “I am not one to ignore services rendered unto the Sidhe. State your names for me, Devil Summoners.”

One by one, you tell your names, going in no particular order after you and MacKay. And at every mention, she inspects each of you closely, without even asking permission to close the distance. Brady shivers as she brushes her cheek against his ears, before moving to feel Victoria’s hair between calloused fingers. MacKay’s face betrays nothing as she traces a finger along a small scar at the back of the priest’s neck. She smiled coyly at Fitz, who gave her shortened name, wary as the fey traced the lines of her hand.

Out of the corner of your eye, you can see the Sidhe guards glancing nervously at each other. Given their reactions, you figure that this isn’t something that Titania does on a routine basis. Not that you’re certain that this is a good or a bad thing. The jury’s still out to lunch.

Then, she stops at you, leaning into the place where your neck meets your shoulder to inhale through her teeth. In this close distance, you can smell the sharp tang of honeysuckle and pine, the rich scent of the bounty of nature clinging to Titania like the mildest of perfumes. Gooseflesh raises along the skin where her breath washes against your neck, and the cool suction of every intake of breath.

Before they vanished, her lips were full, soft, coy and inviting. Her neck is right there, the skin just the right shade of someone long-accustomed to spending her days in the wilder places of the world. It's so close, too close...just waiting for someone to leave a blemish, a mark of possession on her flawless skin...

Thankfully, she is brief in your inspection, withdrawing a few steps back before your body made any undue reactions. That would be nothing short of embarrassing, because one: you already got laid in the prior mission; two, Titania is a demon, and a married one at that! The rulebook makes no mention of demons outside the party, but you have a sinking feeling that a court-martial would see things that way...

Not to mention the fact that her husband is King of the Fairies.

“Interesting…” She muses, eying the five of you up and down as one would an exotic species. “How very interesting…”

But before any of you can ask or complain, Titania spreads her arms open, almost shouting in a loud proclamation: “Know this. The humans Adrian Brown, Stanley MacKay, Fitz, Lawrence Brady and Victoria Yamane shall always be welcome in the halls of the Sidhe. I name them friends to the Tuatha de Danann, Children of the Goddess Danu, for their services rendered unto our kingdom. Let no fairy reject an initial entreatment, nor any plea for aid in the direst of circumstances, for we would be the most ungrateful of wretches if we did not repay the debt owed to them.”

…what. You don’t know why, but you have a feeling that somehow, Commander Alger is going to hit the roof when you tell him of this development. This is a conclusion that your friends also make, judging by their baffled looks. And Titiana as well, if the smile on her face is any indication.

"Now… Adrian, Stanley…” She beckons you to step closer, and you slowly advance towards the first steps leading up to the throne. “I promised you a reward, did I not? For your services in revealing the corruption within my lands, and unearthing the evidence of a traitorous subject.”

Titania's mouth quirks, and a quiet gust of wind sighs through the tower, as if released by some unseen spirit at the cue of the fey. “You may pick a reward of your choosing, or negotiate for one if you do not find what you wish for.

“Of course,” She smiles coyly, “You may have to put a silvered tongue to use in order to get the bargain that you wish for.”

A thought suddenly comes into your mind, one that is not among Titania’s offered rewards. One that might definitely help you in the long run better than a sword or a new demon.

“If it is within her majesty’s authority,” You intone, pulling up your COMP, “I would like to ask for a different reward.”

Titania raises a curious eyebrow. “Oh?” Her voice takes on the tonality of one both amused and intrigued. “And, pray tell, what would that be?”

The device whirs softly as you fire up the Devil Summoning Program, the familiar pattern of the hexagram flaring up on the screen. The Sidhe guards tense, weapons and armor clanking before their Queen waves for them to stand down. With a quick motion, you select the demon you want, grinning as a familiar portrait locks into the center of the interface.

A flash of light is the only warning you have before the demon in question materializes into existence, kimono softly fluttering in the breeze of her entrance.

“Good morning, Master!” High Pixie chirps, waving at you with her back to Titania. “Did you sleep well?”

You grin. “Yeah. I guess I slept alright. And you, Pixie? How’re you feeling?”

She preens at that, tittering as she zooms closer towards you. “Positively perfect! I’m all better from the activities we got up to the other day. So, where’s the last demon? I’m ready to kick ass and take names!”

Snerk. At MacKay’s bewildered expression and Titania’s knowing smile, you can’t hold it anymore. The smile you’ve been trying to hide breaks out into a full grin, and it’s only then that your demon knows that something is up.

“Wait a moment…” She mutters, casting her eyes across the room. Her gaze falls upon the rest of your compatriots, familiarity registering in her pupils before they dart towards the room itself. The smile on her face gradually melts away, gradually becoming one of mortified horror at the sight of the building itself, the Sidhe Guards along the sides and the artifacts along the wall. “Master…where exactly…are we?”

“Welcome, lost child of the Tuatha de Danann,” Titania’s voice is a sonorous melody, flowing like water as the words exit her mouth. The pallor on your demon’s face pales at the sound of the voice, and you can hear the individual bones crack as she turns to face the Queen of the Fairies. There’s a sputtering noise where words would normally be, as she gesticulates helplessly in the air, even as the Queen moves closer to her. “To the Sidhe Court, in the Great Tree of Danu. Your master and his Devil Summoners are fine guests to entertain in our hallowed halls of old wood and stone.”

High Pixie shrieks, quickly throwing herself straight to the ground, bowing profusely at the Queen. “Y-y-y-your Highness Titania!” She stammers, debasing herself without a single moment of hesitation. “I-I-I-I-I ap-ap-ppologize for my impertinence! My master failed to…had I known…I…”

You hear Brady snort, only for the tail end of it to turn into a pained grunt as Victoria steps on his boots. Fitz is shaking her head, doing her best to hide a grin behind her hand. And MacKay sighs, as if resigned to the antics that Squad Carina is capable of.

If looks could kill, the infuriatingly embarrassed glare that your demon shot you would’ve put you in the ground six times over. There would be a cause for concern if it’s any other demon, and to a certain extent, you figure that you’re gonna have to apologize later. Maybe with that blue hair dye as a restitution gift of sorts.

Titania brushes off your demon’s babbling apology, kneeling down with an outstretched hand. High Pixie flinches at the sight, but the Queen is quick enough to cut off her escape, gently taking your demon by the hands.

“There is no need for apology,” She smiles, pulling your demon up with her as she rises to her full height. “Considering that your scent is that of one gone from our realm for a long time. But perhaps a reminder that one should be careful of their surroundings. Especially when they are summoned out of a mystic device.”

High Pixie nods so fast that you’re worried that her little neck might get whiplash. “Yes! Yes! Yes, your majesty! It is a lesson I swear to take to the grave!”

“Hopefully not that far.” Then, Titania turns her attention back to you. “What does this child have to do with your request?”

Well, that’s easy enough.

“She has been with me from the very beginning, when I first learned about the world of demons,” You smile, and make a recalcitrant gesture to your demon’s angry pout. “And has proved to be a great ally and companion in the dangers that us Devil Summoners face. But I fear that as I gain power, she will fall behind as I encounter stronger enemies in the line of duty.”

It’s true, and from the look on High Pixie’s face, it’s clear that she’s also had it on the mind. The enemies are getting stronger, and unfortunately, your demons aren’t able to keep up with your rate of growth. Unless you slavishly devoted time to their training, which is inefficient for time spent and results reaped.

You pause, taking a breath before continuing, “That is why I would like to beseech you to bestow power upon her, from the Queen of the Fairies to one of her loyal subjects. So that my demon might be able to stay by my side for however long it may take.”

>Brady approves +10
>Victoria approves +4

The silence is so profound that you might’ve heard a pin drop. Your demon’s face is one of shock and no small amount of happiness, tears welling up in the corner of her eyes. Her little body trembles, and it's clear that if it isn't improper, she would fly across the room and tackle you in a wild hug.

Even Titania, who has remained unflappable and flippant, bears open surprise. But that quickly gives way into an enigmatic smile. “How interesting…now I see. Adrian Brown, you truly are Alger’s subordinate…”

She extends her hand, open and facing the ceiling of tree branches and thicket. Within the center of her palm, power gathers. It is first merely dull motes of white, before condensing into a vortex of raw, unbridled power. You can hear the voices of the Sidhe and that of your companions, grunting as a wave of power emanates from the sphere.

High Pixie does not shy away, drawing closer to the orb as Titania places an empty hand onto her brow, almost as if in benediction. Her lips move, and the sound that comes out of her mouth is in a language you cannot recognize. It is old, older than man, as old as the first forests to blossom under a young sun. The language of fairies? Or the language of demons?

What do you wish of your companion to learn, Adrian? You try not to freeze as Titania’s voice whispers softly into your mind, and you glance at the Fairy Queen in alarm. Her mouth has not moved, that enigmatic smile still on cherry lips as the voice comes once more. What do you wish of your dear ally to learn, in order to better aid you in your struggle against the world?

Let's break this down before we vote.

>>
>>852920
>>Megido
Great AOE fuck you spell which we are unlikely to get for a while
>Luster Candy
buffs!
>>
>>852920
i would be for either Megido or Debilitate.
Though luster Candy is a must in my opinion.
>>
>>852920
Okay so Luster Candy is the obvious 'most beneficial' one as it lets the whole squad reap the benefits as well.

Same with Debilitate.

Thing is though, if we do either of those our Pixie is going to regulated to a support role, only casting buffs for most of the fight.

And that seems kinda boring. And we do have a lot of de/buffs spread throughout the squad already.

Comboing Megido and Concentrate we make our Pixie hit really fucking hard for the rest of the quest. I assume Megido is going to grow along with her.

Energy Drain is the weakest since we seem to have a lot of medicine to feed our demons but is still a solid choice for self sustainability.

I guess what you want here depends on how you want to build Pixie. Support buffer or a nuker.

>Why not both?
It'll be tougher to utilize both since quest combat seems considerably shorter than the video game combat. Still an option though.

Tough call.

>>
Ah shit just image how much Pixie is gonna be shitposting on /demon/
>>
>>853005
Megido is an AOE that does "Almighty" damage. Nothing is immune and only late game boss tier demons have resistance. IE: LUCIFER, and maybe a handful of others.

Luster candy is exactly as >>853018 said, all the buffs to everyone.

In short, do not fuck with our High Pixie. She will cut you, with a nuke.

>>853005

>>
>>853005
Luster Candy is a triple buff (Attack/Def/Agility) in one spell. Incredibly useful.

Debilitate is it's counter part, a triple debuff in one spell.

Megido is an AoE spell of the Almighty element meaning it can't be defended against.

Energy drain is stealing MP from an enemy. Nice to have when you use heavy costing spells and need some way to get some MP back.

Concentrate is spell where you spend a turn charging and the next damaging spell you cast hits for a fuck ton more.
>>
>>853028

That's the plan for finals. And copious amounts of prayer. Hopefully Adderall doesn't come into the equation.

But enough about the shit in my life. Let's have some more random facts about the TF666 Universe while I type.

>Dante and Virgil are considered DemiKids. To exploit elemental weaknesses, Dante collects and wields Angel/Devil Arms while Virgil collects and summons demons.
>Each continent barring the Arctic/Antarctic has an operations director, forming the backbone of the Grand Council. They convene every five years to discuss happenings and going-ons. A liaison from the Inquisition sits in to represent the collective bulk of the Church-sanctioned Summoners.
>It is rare for family members or relatives of agents, current or employed in the past, to join with the Task Force. Mainly because most current agents have no desire to have their family members go up against demons.
>Non-critical members of the organization (janitors, cafeteria workers, etc.) are either partially/completely blind or deaf as to prevent information leaks.
>Romance between agents are not frowned upon as long as it doesn't interfere with or compromise one's ability to perform operations. With that said, the Task Force operates on a "don't ask, don't tell" rule.
>Retired agents receive an option to be mind-wiped. Many choose not to, preferring instead to retain their memories on the condition to stay silent and answer the call should there be a dire need of more Devil Summoners.
>Research into the objects known as [Terminals] has been going on since the beginning of the last century. Scientists are still baffled as they struggle to activate the inert Terminals to no avail.
>The Japanese branch of the Task Force is chaired by members of both the international coalition and the nationalistic Yatagarasu organization, comprised of the four Kuzunoha clans.

Also, best boys when?
>>
>>854560

Nope. Current theory is that they're magical artifacts of some sort. They don't know what they do, but the fact that they're scattered across the world means that they have some strange purpose. Teleportation, not that they know it.

In the original SMT timeline, sure. In this one, there is no Stephen. Just Akemi Nakajima, his DSP and nowhere near enough booze to drown the memory of Loki.

>Aleph
Mentioned in another thread how the Japanese division is harangued by an occult reporter who just won't stop pestering them.

>Hero
His counterpart is a Japanese Ranger in this iteration.

Tamaki is happily married to Tadashi Satomi, with four children between the two of them. They are rare in that the whole family works for the Task Force.

The events of Raidou 1 ensure that the events of SMT won't come to pass. We're piggybacking off of that divergence in the clusterfuck that's the MegaTen timeline.

========

>Megido
>Luster Candy

The orb of power in Titania’s hand dissolves, dissipitating into motes of light that float towards your demon. They fall around her, like luminescent snowfall, imbuing her with the power of the Queen of the Fairies as they disappear upon contact with her skin. High Pixie sighs, a soft noise of acceptance as the entirety of her being is suffused in the radiant light.

The power in the Fairy Queen’s hands finally vanishes. And with it, the oppressive atmosphere in the room disappears, causing a collective sigh of relief to come from human and demon alike. Titania nods, seemingly satisfied with herself, before gracefully hovering back up to her throne.

Your eyes meet hers, and you can see a mirthful twinkle within pale blue irises. May this power aid you in the struggles to come…
And with that, the ceremony is over.

High Pixie wobbles to her feet, and you’re quick to rush forward to help her. Her skin still glows a soft yellow, pulsating occasionally with every few seconds. You’re already moving before she hits the ground. “Hey, hey, hey…are you alright? C’mon, stay with me…”

“Master…” She says, her speech no small amount of slurred as she continues to wobble, continues to glow. “…there’s too much…too much power…”

“Power?” You repeat, frowning as you kneel down to better inspect your demon. “What do you mean by power?”

She clutches the side of her head, wincing as if suffering from a migraine or severe headache. “Remember how I told you way back in Cocytus how demons learn magic? Demon Whisper is one of them, and I can’t hold more than eight spells. I have to choose two current spells in my repertoire to discard so that I can wield Her Highness’ gifts without strain.”

>High Pixie cannot learn more than eight moves.
>Choose two spells for High Pixie to forget:

>Dia (Restores smile amount of health to one ally)
>Zio (Weak lightning spell, 20% Shock to one foe)
>Rakunda (Lower's enemy's defense by one level)

>Wing Buffet (Weak force damage to random enemies)
>Healing Pleroma (25% Boost to healing spells)
>Paraladi! (Removes stun from one ally)
>Me Patra! (Removes bind, sleep or panic from all allies.)

As you go over the ramifications and benefits of making a final choice, the bulk of Titiana’s attention shifts to MacKay. “And you, Stanley? What would a priest of the White God ask of me?”

If he took any pause to that particular label, he did a good job of hiding it. MacKay bows. “Your majesty...if I would be so bold as to ask for the service of a demon, one true and tried against all manners of evil. And, one that may better serve to protect and support my compatriots. That is all I would ask for, no more, and no less.”

Wasn't there a Raidou who came back in time and tried to prevent the MegaTen timeline? What happened with that?
>>
>>857220
Raidou the 40th. His story is the main plot of the first Raidou game where he goes back in time to prevent MegaTen. He is main antagonist of the game and as Raidou the 14th you stop him, but his actions still caused enough of a butterfly effect that it still prevented the doomed timeline.

That Raidou, XL in the line of succession, was the one from the SMT timeline, working as a Temple Knight for the lawfags Messian Order. Because of his interference in the stream of time, even though he was ultimately defeated by Raidou XIV, that universe would never go on to experience the events that would lead up to a hypothetical Great Cataclysm. Adding in the absence of Steven, this iteration of the universe remains true to a MegaTen timeline.

>High Pixie replaced Rakunda and Wing Buffet with Megido and Luster Candy!

High Pixie sighs in relief as you make your decision, whispering into her ear as to the spells you wish for her to retain. There’s a tense and palpable air, and the energy surrounding your demon evaporates into the air.
“Ohhh…owww…”

“Oi. You alright there?”

She wobbles uncertainly. “Yeah…just…whew…that was…that’s was one rush…”

“So how do you feel?”

She turns to look up at you, eyes wide and bright. “I feel…power. More powerful than I was…but more than that…I feel something else…something that I can’t explain…like…a forgotten taste…”

A little too abstract for your mind. Still, she seems fine, with no lingering signs of any sort of headache or migraine. “Right, then,” you smile, “Glad to see that you’re alright.”

Her eyes eventually lose their glazed look, and then they sharply refocus onto you. And the intensity within them is enough to catch you off guard. Bewilderment, confusion, happiness and joy…all of these emotions and more are caught within your demon’s eyes.

“Master!” You have little warning before she hugs at your waist, pressing herself tight against your body. “Thank you, Master Adrian! Thank you so much! I promise to be the best High Pixie you’ve ever had!”

In spite of the stares, you can’t help but chuckle at that. “I’ve only had you.”

“Then I’ll be the best demon you’ve ever had!” She nods enthusiastically, blinking past tears of joy as she snuggles deeper into your combat vest. “I promise not to let you down, Master!”

“Since when have you ever?”

As High Pixie continues to gush, you return your attention back to the front of the throne room. From the way MacKay’s eyebrows occasionally twitch, and how Titania’s smile doesn’t quite reach her eyes, you can guess that she’s communicating with the priest telepathically as well. You’d been spooked well enough when she did it to you. The fact that MacKay’s maintaining a cool exterior shows a calm that you’d expect from a man of his profession.

Then again, his whole discomfort could stem from conversing with a pagan demon. Which makes you really wonder. He’s been nothing but cordial to all the demons you’ve encountered. At the rate he’s going, you’re half-expecting him to be polite when you run up against the “fire and brimstone” demons. Orias doesn’t count; you were out of it when the snake demon attacked you on the freeway.

Titania stirs, continuing to smile at the priest from atop her dais. “Very well. You shall have your reward.” For a moment, it looks like he might disagree, but she cuts him off with a wave of her hand. “Now that everything has been dispensed with, you may exit from the Tree. You have one last demon to hunt, Devil Summoners. Go, and bring the vagabond to justice. I eagerly await your return, and the news of your final success.”

The tone of her voice is sharp enough to brook no argument. MacKay deflates, but nods, retreating with you to rejoin the others. As one, the five of you bow down to Queen Titania, eventually departing through the way you came. Before the curtains close, and as you stand on the already-descending platform, you take a single look back.

Her smile remains the same. Enigmatic, unreadable, and utterly inhuman. Just as a fae should be.

>>Outside the Great Tree
“You asked for demon, yeah?” You ask MacKay, once you reach a far enough distance away from the gate sentinels. The five of you take a seat around a patch of grass only a few dozen feet away from the main body of the kingdom. “Where’s the demon? Unless Titiania made it magically appear in your COMP.”

MacKay chortles at that, the cloud of doubt on his features dispelling under the friendly jibe. “No, nothing of the sort. My device remains unchanged, as do the number of demons in my stock.”

Fitz seems to be chewing on her lip. “Right. So…what’s supposed to happen now?”

He tugs at his collar. “She told me that she summoned the demon she had in mind. And that it’s on its way here, right now from deep within the old woods.”

“…so…you got a time?” You ask, tapping your watch. "We gotta head out soon-"

“Two hours,” MacKay sighs, sitting down by a nearby rock. “Two hours before I have my new demon.”

Out of all the team’s reactions, it’s Fitz’s that closely mirrors yours, eyes almost bulge out of your skulls. “You’ve gotta shittin’ me.” The look on his face is flatter than paper, and she backs off. “Point taken. But what the hell? That’s a really big inconvenience. That demon of yours better be worth it!”

“Yeah, about that,” Brady mutters, cracking his neck. “What did you ask for, exactly?”

The priest frowns. “A demon that would provide support and aid.”

“Okay, so what kind of demon is that? I mean, what’s its name? Species?”

Here’s the part where MacKay coughs, and a tinge of red enters his cheeks. “…she didn’t tell me.”
…in the silence between the five of you, the only noise is that of the soft wind, blowing down the sides of the gorge and carrying through the leaves of the Great Tree.

“She didn’t tell you…” Victoria repeats, incredulous. “MacKay…what the heck does that even mean? That sounds really dangerous.”

He only balks slightly at the stares directed at him, running the gamut from bemused, incredulous and outright irritated. “There’s no danger. I can tell you that much. Apparently…her highness intends for it to be a, in her words, ‘a surprise’ for both you all and for me.”

…even you aren’t sure about how to respond to that. Then again, you probably should’ve expected this. Fae are notorious for tricks and little schemes, and you suppose that they’re no different than their fictional kin. Perhaps this is one of them, an elaborate prank set by Titania. Where’s the hidden camera?

Still…you check your watch. Thirty minutes of playing knowtow to Her Highness. Two hours is a long time, and would easily burn up the better half of the day just sitting around and waiting. Not to mention the time it would take to get the car out to the point where the demon’s energy signature was detected last.

And in the case of pursuit missions, time is everything..

You shake your head. “Sorry, MacKay, but we can’t wait. Fitz is right. We really need to go.”

The priest nods, unlacing the bottoms of his shoes as he leans back against the rock. “That’s understandable. I’ll catch up with you the instant I get my demon. Just make sure you keep your tracking beacon on. I’ll home in as fast as I can.”

“That’s gonna be hard,” Brady points out, “Considering we’re gonna be taking the car. And I don’t think that the fairies have a cabby service they’ve got running.”

MacKay smiles. “Modesty is a virtue, but I’m not one to hide what comes naturally to me. also ran track and field whenever football was out of season. Long-distance sprinting is something I’m adept at, even with all the extra gear.”

The rest of the party looks skeptical, but you have faith in his abilities. In theory, you’d be able to swap the cassock and soldier’s armor for the uniform of an Olympic athlete, and he’d live up to the mantle. The man’s jacked, even more so than you. How he managed to keep it all under the garments is a mystery for all the ages.

“Alright,” You nod, offering an outstretched fist. “We’ll catch you in a bit. We’ll keep close to the kingdom, chase the nearest signatures first. If we go any further out, then we’ll be sure to let you know.”

It takes him a moment to understand the gesture you make, but he eventually gets it. He returns your fist with one of his own, bumping knuckles and pulling back in a time-honored gesture of solidarity between friends, comrades and bros.

“Stay safe out there,” He says, glancing skyward at the passing clouds. “And don’t hesitate to start without me if you think you can kill it on your own.”

>>Later

The car jumps as it goes over another rock, almost sending the top of your head crashing towards the ceiling. It wouldn’t be the first time that it happened, but it’s a welcome change from the low ceiling of your parents’ car. Fitz’s curse has only half as much vitriol after the first dozen obstacles or so, even as Brady and Victoria try to navigate the perilous terrain of the fairy realm.

“The signature came from over here…” The hacker mutters, pen between his teeth as he goes over a map of the forest. “COMP says we’re over there, so you’re gonna want to drive another half of a click in…that direction.” He points towards some unseen point in the distant tree line, only to yelp as Victoria swats his hand out her field of vision.

“I see it,” she says, knuckles gripped tight against the transmission stick. With a grunt of exertion, she shifts the transmission into fourth gear, and the Cadillac lurches forward. “Should be there in a few minutes…”

Either through your own personal virtue or Titania’s recent proclamation, you managed to convince the Sidhe Guard to let you take the car deeper into the realm. If it had been anyone else, the request would be denied, and the car left stuck in the spot designated for mortal vehicles. You were surprised to find that pollution wasn’t their main concern, and that the smog one vehicle could produce would easily be cleansed by the end of the day.

What they were worried about was the iron in the car, and how most of them were uncomfortable with a two-ton mechanical marvel traversing through their home. To be fair, most of the iron content in the Cadillac itself was diluted due a mixture of other elements to form the steel, but they weren’t convinced. It was a far cry from cold iron, and even composite iron, but you suppose you’d be on edge if someone drove a vehicle comprised of a metal that was literally anathema to your existence.

Hence, you promised to take it off-road and as far away from the kingdom without significantly distancing MacKay. They begrudgingly allowed that much, but extracted a promise that you’d not take it inside the city proper. That was reasonable enough.

Fitz’s voice calls out adjacent to you. “Vic, is this your first time off-roadin’? Not sayin’ that you’re bad at it, but I’m just genuinely curious.”

“Third time,” She replies, eyes briefly flickering up in the rear-view mirror before they return to the road ahead. You’re almost past the outermost border of the kingdom’s territory, right where the first energy signature was detected. “Did some back in high school. But not with a car.”

“Lemme guess,” Brady deadpans, even as makes additional markings on the map. “Dirtbike.”

The surprise is apparent in her voice. “How’d you know?”

He snorts. “An educated guess-”

Wait a moment. Your eyes narrow at…something in the distance. Something that you have a gut feeling shouldn’t be there. “Hold up.” You raise a fist, unbuckling yourself to lean forward, pushing yourself in between the space where Victoria and Brady are sitting. You cut off their complaints with a pointed gesture, making an outstretched gesture towards the sight in question. “Hey, take a look at that.”

Up ahead is a clearing in the woods, right where the mark is supposed to be. That itself is not unusual, but what is surprising is the fact that it shows signs of recent fire. The charred husks of trees stand pitifully to task, some already in the process of crumbling as a strong wind blows through the area. Where grass and wild plants should be growing, there is naught but scorched earth and open soil.

The most telling thing is that it’s not old. It’s new, at least a few hours. The demon’s been here. And recently, too.

I've been working extensively on a demon trait system to expand demon utility and usefullness. So, Gryphon would get something along the lines of "Eagle Eye" for a bonus to perception, and "Mount" since he's big enough to ride on. Angel grants a +5 bonus to talking with Law aligned characters, and so on and so forth for the other demons.

Things that don't take up move space, just small passive or active abilities. Kind of like the demons in the Raidou games.

Before Victoria stops the car, everyone is already in motion. Weapons snap to the ready, seatbelts fly, and COMPs power up, the familiar hum of the DSP activating filling the interior of the car.

“Shit,” Brady curses, stuffing the map into the glove compartment. “The hell happened here?”

Fitz slides the chamber of her gun, checking for a round as she places a hand to the door. “Guess we’re gonna find out.”

A cursory inspection of the smoke via a small crack in the window doesn’t prove as deadly as you’d think it to be. The smoke’s mitigating somewhat, faster than the aftermath of a normal fire, probably due to the inherent purification of the fairy realm. As a result, you figure that it’s safe enough to go out with only eye protection, and a bit of cloth covering your mouth. Unless any of you are suffering from asthma (which you aren’t), the aftereffects shouldn’t have too much of a dramatic impact on your party’s health.

Once everyone’s ready, you nod, and clamber out of the vehicle. Fitz takes point for you, sweeping her gun before motioning for you to come out of the car. Likewise, you follow her motions, M4 leveled in the air as the four of you create a defensive perimeter around the car.

You give it a few moments, before giving the all-clear. And within the next, all of you have summoned your demons. Angel begins to beat away at the smoke, clearing the area and your vision as High Pixie gravitates towards your side. Gremlin sneezes at the smoke, comforted by Tagata Manu even as Apsaras and Lham Dearg take up arms and ready their magic. Hackles raised, Hair Jack stands protectively near Brady, where Jack Frost mounts the beast with a “TALLY-HO!”

Victoria frowns at her COMP, gesturing for you to come over. “The readings are a little weird…all just a flatline. If I point it somewhere else…” She does so, pointing the scanning tool towards the edge of the clearing. “The readings go back to normal, if not outright peak.”

“I dunno what that means,” Fitz mutters, finger just a hair’s breath away from the trigger of her gun. “But that can’t be good.”

Brady joins the two of you, and he blanches at the graph. “Bloody hell. It looks the magnetite’s been virtually sucked dry from the clearing. There’s nothing left here. A literal dead zone in the forest.”

…that is definitely not good-

“Contact!” Fitz barks, and levels her gun at a collapsed tree trunk. You don’t see anything, but you decide to follow her lead, drawing your own weapons as your demons ready their magic.

A nasal voice is quick to cut through the groaning of the forest. “Eeep! Don’t shoot, don’t shoot!”

The figure to emerge from underneath the log is small and diminutive, easily the size of your own High Pixie. But there’s a clear and noted difference between the two of them. Though they share the wings of a Fairy, her appearance is definitely a departure from your first demon. Blonde hair streaked with soot falls down to her waist, and her ears are almost twice the length of the fey you’ve seen in the Sidhe Guard. Not to mention her clothes…or lack thereof proper ones.

She shivers, either from the cold or the four guns and eight demons bearing down on her, and raises her hands up in surrender. “I surrender! I didn’t do anything wrong!” She wails. “I’m an innocent bystander!”

High Pixie’s eyes brighten. “A sylph, master,” She provides excitedly. “Elemental spirits of the air. They’re friendly enough unless you provoke them first.”

You nod at that, and lower your weapon. The demons and their Devil Summoners follow suit, respectfully depowering their magic and lowering their weapons. The sylph’s relief is palpable, and if it isn’t for the fact that she was hovering, she’d probably collapse into the ash-strewn earth.

“Thank Danu it’s only humans!” She cries. “I thought I was going to die for sure! And I still had money to collect from that stinking goblin, a sister to marry off…wait.”

She brushes her tears away with a clean section of her…leotard, lifting the spandex covering her chest to dab at her eyes. Brady chokes while Fitz just rolls her eyes, and Victoria’s stare could wither a lesser man. Not that the demon notices, now looking at you with new consideration.

“Humans…” She says. “Devil Summoners, in the fairy realm! What in the name of the people are you doing here?”

Well, that question is easy enough to answer. “We’re here on behalf of Titania,” You explain, gesturing to Squad Carina minus MacKay. “As per the orders of Task Force 666 and the treaty between them and the Fairy Kingdom. We’ve got a job tracking down a demon that’s been kidnapping children.”

“And burning forests, apparently,” Brady mutters. He’s still red-faced as he nudges a branch with his boot, which promptly disintegrates into dust. “Shit, that’s gonna be a pain to take out…”

Ignoring him, you return your attention to the fairy. “First off, are you alright? You don’t look too good.”

“What…oh…this?” She gestures to her body, streaked with dirt and soot. “Nah, it’s just…superficial damage. Nothing that can’t be fixed with a good night’s rest.”

Fitz grunts. “That’s great to hear and everything but…what the hell happened here? And what were you doing here?”

Sylph sighs, rubbing her head as if afflicted by a migraine. “Oh, you wouldn’t believe it. I was just minding my own business when all of a sudden, everything’s on fire! No, really! Just flying on auto-pilot, still keeping to myself and remaining invisible when everything goes to hell! I was so scared that I just had to drop down and hide under the closest shelter available! I may have even fainted at one point…”

...that’s a lot of words, but she said very little. Just an account of herself and not a description detailed enough for the investigation to move forward.

“Can you tell us what happened?” You ask.

She huffs up, cheeks red and indignant. “Well, first off that-”

Suddenly, she cuts herself off, taking a moment to think something over before a grin breaks out across her face. When she resumes talking, the spark of greed enters her eyes. “Saaaaayyyyyyy….what’s this information worth to you? Probably a great deal since you’re working for the Grey Order and Her Highness Titania...and without it, you’re probably gonna be going around the forest in circles without my help. And after I’ve been so brutally treated, suffering an assault on myself…I need compensation, after all, so that I can go comfort myself in recovery...”

…really? You’re gonna have this here, right now? And from the sharp intakes of breath from Victoria and Ftiz, on top of disgusted scowls, it seems like they’re not having any of it either. Even High Pixie looks irritated.

As tempting as it is to wave a gun in her face and give her a bullet for her trouble, you’re not going to. Because one, it reflects bad on you if you’re gonna be quick to threats of violence. And the second reason is that you’re definitely smoother than that.

“Well, that’s a damn shame,” You mutter, and you try not to smile as sylph suddenly looks nervous. “Because the way I see it, you’d be doing a disservice to the fairies.”

Relief appears back on her face, before sliding back to a mask of coy indifference. “Really, Devil Summoner?” She asks. “And how do you figure?”

You take your free hand and gesture around the forest. “Look at this place. This is your home, isn’t it? And you mentioned a sister, earlier, and how you’ve got to pay for her wedding. Isn’t this her home also?”

Her eyes narrow. “Don’t bring my family into this, Summoner.”

“That being said,” You continue, partially ignoring her, “This is every fairy’s home, whether they like it or not. And you’re bound to have some friends who would disapprove of your behavior right now.”

She scoffs at that. “Really? Is that going to be your argument? Appealing to my pathos? Nice try, Summoner, but my heart’s a little too cold for that.”

Victoria bristles, and the collected assembly of demons stirs. Hairy Jack lets out a low growl, furry hackles rising to nearly buck Jack Frost off of it, but Brady stays his demon’s hand. And if you concentrate hard enough, you can hear Fitz’s teeth grinding against each other. The worst part about it is that the idiot doesn’t even know that she’s digging her own grave even deeper.

Not that it’s going to stop you. You continue to press the advantage, this time switching tactics, “Fair enough. But like we told you earlier, we work for Queen Titania, and right now, we’re on the hunt for a demon that’s damaging the realm. Say that you don’t help us. That’s fine, and we’ll move on from this site to the next without further incident.

“But when everything’s said and done, we’ll have to report back to Her Highness. And she’s going to want a very detailed report of what happened. She was quite insistent on it while we were in the Great Tree.”

Your companions realize where you’re going, and they do their best to hide growing grins. And sylph pales. “You…you…you went into the Great Tree…?” She stutters. “Impossible…no human has ever been inside the wood since Tam Lin entreated Titania for aid centuries ago-”

“And I’ll have you know,” You interject, steamrolling right over her, “That Her Highness was gracious enough to declare my companions and I to be friends to the fae, for services rendered during our quest. And that no fairy was to reject initial treatment, or any plea for aid in the direst of circumstances.”

You try not to grin as the fairy begins to tremble, trying and failing to hide her growing apprehension. “And even if we weren’t recognized as friends of the fae, we’d still be duty bound to give Titania a complete report of the situation. And when we do, we’ll make sure to go over in great detail how you had information and could have helped us, but chose not to, leading to a longer investigation and more dead zones in the forest.”

You pause, taking a moment to let that fact sink in, before gesturing to your friends. “They didn’t see it, but my second-in-command and I bore witness to how Queen Titania deals with traitors.”

Her eyes are cold as ice as she raises her hand towards the Seedbed, the grove, and the last site of the goblin and spriggan’s dear friend. All it takes is one word, almost a whisper from lips as sweet as honey. “Megidolaon.”

And a star is born in the realm of the fey.

Sylph’s eyes are wide and dilated, and sweat beads across her little forehead. Not from the lingering heat in the area, but from unabridged and unmasked fear. Judging from her earlier reaction, it’s clear that she’s been away from the kingdom’s interior for a long time to not know of your presence when all others did. But she still had enough of a memory to recall how her Queen dealt with traitors.

In front of Titania, a landscape of utter ruin greets you. Her spell not only destroyed the Seedbed, now little more than a lump of ruined ashes, but completely obliterated the dryad’s grove. Every single flower, every single tree, the last memento of a dear friend: all of it was gone.

Little more than dust on the wind, a barren earth in the land and a bad taste in the memory of the people.

Nothing was spared from the queen’s wrath.

“So if you’re still unwilling to cooperate…” You conclude, motioning towards your friends and to the car as you go in for the kill, “Then we’ll be just on our way. We’re very sorry to disturb you when you’re so clearly distraught…”

“Okay, okay, I’ll talk, I’ll talk!” Sylph rushes, frantically gesticulating as she lurches forward. “It’s one thing to extort…I mean, skillfully acquire some additional means of capital, but not at the risk of pissing off the queen!”

You share a conspiratorial grin with the squad before you turn back to face the demon. “I’m so glad we could come to mutual understanding with each other.”

>Brady approves +4
>Fitz approves +2
>Victoria approves +3

Even your demons are unable to hold back a laugh at that, chortling with your companions. Much to the sylph’s displeasure. “Yeah, yeah,” she grumbles, “Laugh it up. Literally threatening disintegration with someone who just wants a little restitution for the horrific trauma she’s faced.”

Fitz counters, “Restitution yer gonna have to earn before ya get it. Now ‘fess up. What happened here, and don’t leave anything out.”

She shoots your friend a dirty look before sighing, resigned. “Fine. So like I said, I was just minding my own business. Flying through the woods, humming a little melody as I rode the winds to where they bade me go. Suddenly, everything goes real quiet. The birds stop singing, the little animals flee the area, and even the demons get all tense. All of a sudden…BLAM!”

She smacks her fist into her open palm, probably more for dramatic effect more than anything else. “The clearing just lit up like Halloween came early! One moment, we’re all minding our own business and keeping to ourselves when suddenly, a really, really powerful demon just poofs into the area!”

Poofs into the area. You mention for her to keep going. “Do you know what it was?”

She spits. “Damn straight I do! It was a no-good salamander, those hot-headed, flame-addicted pyrophiles that just want to burn everything in sight! But it was no ordinary salamander,” Her voice drops to a hushed whisper, one that you can feel tinged with fear. “It’s flames were blue. Not red or orange like the demons I’ve heard of. But a cold, dark blue that burned as much as it froze.”

A salamander. Brady’s already digging into his COMP for further information before you even give the command. You nod at him to continue before returning to the wind fairy. “So what happened then?”

Her laughter is harsh. “A complete and utter show of pandemonium. Bastard started throwing flames like it was nobody’s business, burning demons into a crisp without much as a warning. I only managed to stay out of the fight because I was invisible, and I hid under a log. But…” She shivers. “Danu, those screams…that’s not something I’m going to be able to forget for a very long time, Summoner…”

(cont.)
>>
You let her take a moment to pull herself back together, swallowing before she’s able to speak again. “Right…so, I must’ve hit my head on a falling branch or something. That’s how I got knocked out. But before that, I heard the demon…it was sucking the magnitite from the ground, and the bodies of the demons, leaving them as dry husks before moving onto the next. And I heard it…it was whispering…it kept repeating ‘not enough…need more…for the master’s sake’…at least, that’s what I was able to make out. And by the time I woke up, it was gone, and you’d come in your vehicle.”

That’s certainly chilling. And with this news, that means that there’s one more target. You all threw theories about how the last demon was the master of the group. Sylph doesn’t seem to be telling a lie. That means that even after the blue salamander, there’s someone else to deal with. Great. Just great.

Still, you have to give credit where credit is due. You not to the fairy. “Thank you for cooperating. We’ll be sure to give Titania a flattering account of you. Minus the…aggressive diplomacy.”

To your surprise, the smile on her face is genuine. “…you know, for what it’s worth...I thank you, Summoner.”

“You should head back to the fairy kingdom’s interior,” Victoria chimes in, pointing a thumb back in the direction of the city. “It’s not safe out here as long as that demon’s out and around.”

“I might actually do that. I’ve been away from the kingdom for too long.”

Fitz grunts. “Do you know which direction the thing went to?”

“No…can’t say that I do,” she admits. “But…that’s all that I have. I promise you that I didn’t leave anything out.”

She isn’t lying. You nod. “Alright. Go ahead and get to safety. It’s gonna get rough out here before it gets any better.”

“…but before I go…promise me this.” Her eyes harden, the dramatic flair shifting into hard steel. “Kill it. Don’t give it any mercy, don’t show it any quarter. Whatever it is, it’s nothing but a mad dog that needs to be put down for the sake of the fairies.”

With that, she takes a polite bow before flying away, zipping high above the canopy of ruined trees and rising smoke. You blink as she disappears into the overhead sun, and by the time your eyesight returns, she’s already vanished. The only ones left in the clearing are four humans, their demons, and more questions than answers.

>Deeper into the woods.

In the end, the next point was within walking distance, and you had no desire to endure the bumpy off road any more than necessary. So you left the car in the clearing, locking it shut tight and activating the anti-demon defense system. Runes and hexagrams flare along the metal, ensuring that hostile demons both tangible and incorporeal would be scalded if not outright vaporized upon contact with the car.

So, you’ve been walking for the better part of twenty minutes, pushing past brush and clearing parts of the thicket with the aid of your demons. Everyone decided that it was a good idea to keep them out, especially when you’re this far from civilization, demon or otherwise. None of you are that paranoid to spring into action upon a hair trigger’s notice, but the atmosphere remains tense as you follow the signal deeper into the thicket.

“Fitz, what is this?”

You stop walking, gesturing to something that fell out of her back pocket after a particularly rough thorn patch. Before she can stop you, you’re already bending down to pick it up, frowning at the words. It’s a brochure, a little pamphlet for a Fourth of July celebration. On the cover, men and women dressed in colonial outfits stand to attention as a lookalike of George Washington raises the American flag.

More images are revealed upon a deeper inspection. Lines of barbecue, a pie sampling fair, a fireworks show, and a historical reenactment of the Battle of Blue Licks. Complete with traditional minutemen uniforms and Indian wear to correctly simulate the incumbents on the field of battle. And cannons as well. You even recognize Doctor Capretta, in the colonial regalia hanging in his office as he smokes a tobacco pipe for the camera.

Everyone’s interest turns to Fitz, as well as more than a few unspoken questions.

When?

“…back in the museum,” She mutters, trying her best to fight down a blush. “When we were talkin’ to Capretta. Thought it looked interesting, so I snagged a brocure.”

Why?

“…fuckin’ hell…look promise ya won’t laugh, okay? You know…I figured that since we’ve been through a whole lot of shit…Orias, the orphanage and the freezer…well, definitely for Orias since I couldn’t predict the other two…still, I figured that maybe we should, you know…just take a breather for a bit? Just the five of us, takin’ a break, without demons or all this cloak and dagger crap. When we’re all done of course, and not before then.”

Brady frowns at the image of a Redcoat in the stocks, who grins as children throw pies at the actor for charity. “I’m not too keen on celebrating my country’s defeat…”

“It happened two hundred years ago,” Victoria counters. “It’s been a long time. Just let it go…”

(cont.)
>>
“Not the point,” Fitz mutters, running a hand across a sweaty brow. “…so…yeah. That’s…why I got it. ‘course knowin’ my luck, we’re probably gonna have to celebrate Independence Day in the car back to Washington…”

“What kind of leader do you think I am?” You grin, much to her surprise. “I’m not Alger. And even without Orias, we definitely, definitely need an outlet after the clusterfuck that was the orphan freezer. And I’m not too averse to taking time off when we need it. Especially when we need it.

“So yeah,” You continue, tapping the brochure. “Let’s hit up the festival after we wipe the floor with salamander. Let’s see…if we can find him by the end of the hour, we just might make it back in time for the battle reenactment.”

It takes her a moment to register your words, as if she has trouble believing that you said them. But it quickly gives way to appreciation. The smile on her face is a far cry from her usual smirk. It’s a gentle one, one that’s fully appreciative and without any sarcasm.

“…thanks, Adrian," she says, clapping you on the shoulder, "I really appreciate it. Hey, you know what? We never even had that drink from the hospital back in May.” This time, her grin returns, and the competitiveness familiar to her is back in full force. “First brew’s on me.”

>Fitz approves +2!
>Brady approves +3
>Victoria approves +1

Brady interjects, “Glad to hear it. Because I am absolutely parched for a good drink. The bar in Delaware had the worst stock I’ve ever had. Hopefully Kentucky has something better to offer.”

“Heard that they make a really mean bourbon,” the policewoman replies, accepting her brochure back with a knowing grin. “One to really knock you off your feet and send you cryin’ under the table.”

“That a challenge?”

All Victoria can do is sigh, but she doesn’t try to hide her own smile on her face.

“Then it’s settled,” You say, already stepping deeper into the thicket. “We’re absolutely getting shitfaced by the time the mission’s over with and done. Who knows, maybe the fairies will throw a wild party to celebrate our success. And Alger can’t fault us when we’re spending time to legitimately recover from a pains brought on by the mission.”

A chorus of agreements echoes from the assembled party, as well as a few sounds of popping vertebrae and joints.

“Alright. So let’s snuff the S.O.B. so we can get fucking hammered, eh?”

With that encouraging thought, the four of you plus your demons continue to hack, blast and chop your way deeper into the woods of the fairy realm.

You almost miss it, honestly, just as you break out of the tree line, and enter into the Widlands of the fairy realm, beyond the establishment of the kingdom’s borders. If the land within Titania’s city is nature carefully pruned and manipulated to be aesthetically pleasing, then this is nature as it should be. Wild and untamed, unfettered by the whims of magic or its wielders.

Even Fitz stops to stare in awe, along with Brady, Victoria and the rest of your demons. It is that captivating, even to one who does not inherently value such things.

This land is beautiful, but it is also cruel. For it is a place where only those with great power can survive, a world of strength contained within a realm. And as you begin the slow descent into the Wildlands, it is then that you bear witness to the rules of nature.

At the bottom of the valley in a gorge of stone lies the target of your search, the dreaded Blue Salamander. It blasts a herd of goat-headed demons with gouts of flame, igniting the fur on their bodies as they struggle to fight against it. Alas, it is of no use. Their blasts of lightning are of no avail, barely even causing the fire demon to wince in pain. It retaliates in turn by bellowing a monstrous roar that you can feel send shivers down your spine, arousing some primal instinct to turn tail and run away.

Bleating, the surviving demons retreat, running as fast as they can towards some distant rock. In their haste, they do not even bother to look behind at wounded kin, left to the tender mercies of the apex predator. Corpses in various states of mutilation and burning are scattered across the blasted earth. But it is not those that the Salamander has interest in. No, its eyes burn in the direction of a survivor, barely clinging onto life as it tries to crawl to safety.

In an instant, the demon pounces, jaws open wide as they sink into the neck of the demon. It shakes once, twice, and even from this distance, you can hear the sharp CRACK as the demon’s neck breaks. The last noise it makes is a rasping, gurgling breath, before even its death throes cease. And in death, it is not spared indignity as the Salamander beings to feast upon its flesh with gusto.

=======

“Shit,” Brady exhales, running a hand through his hair. “That thing just took out a herd of Fomor demons without breaking a sweat. Jesus Christ almighty…” At your confused looks, he elaborates further. “The goat-headed demons. Irish-Celtic origins and descent. They’re no joke either. Apparently they gave the Tuatha de Danann a run for their money back in the day.”

Victoria’s face is grim. “Not to mention that it’s extracting magnitite from the corpses. I checked the readings. As soon as one corpse has been sucked dry, it moves to the next.”

“Master,” Angel’s melodic voice is lined with steel, and underneath her blindfold, you can see her brow in the shape of a deep scowl. “That abomination cannot be allowed to live. As loathe as I am to agree with a demon of pagan origins-”

High Pixie coughs vigorously into her kimono. And Brady’s Jacks do their best to glare at the angel.

“-allies notwithstanding,” She corrects herself, before returning to you. “But the point remains that the sylph was right. We cannot waste any time on diplomacy when it is little more than a rabid beast. One that grows more powerful for every kill it makes.”

Fitz looks up from an impromptu doodle on the ground of the area. In the center lies Salamander, perched atop a rock to digest the demons he has eaten. There is no protection that he can hide behind, but neither is there any cover for you to take advantage of once you’re down the slope. It’s an open field, and you’d be charging down a hill in plain sight to meet him.

“There’s twelve of us,” She mutters, “And only one of him. We might be able to take him without MacKay’s help, now that your pixie got a power-up, Sawbones. And I’m not too adverse to shooting first and asking questions later.”

“I’m sensing a ‘but’ at the end of this train of thought…”

“…it isn’t gonna sit right with me if we don’t figure out why. I mean, last time when you told Murdock to stand the fuck down back in Delaware. The reason you gave, can’t remember the exact wording.”

“I treat the sickness, not the symptoms. And that’s the way I handle things with the Task Force as well.”

Everyone’s gaze turn to you, as you stare at Fitz’s little battlefield and replay the memory of the beast over and over again in your head.

“But there’s no guarantee that he’d be open to negotiation,” Victoria warns. “Even though he’s full and less likely to attack by conventional standards…”

“We’re still dealing with a demon,” Brady concludes, checking his sniper rifle. “A being who doesn't play by conventional rules. But it’s still your call, boss.”

>Pixie Cast [Luster Candy] on the party!

Still bathing in the sun, the Blue Salamander perks up as you slowly make your way down the hill, mounted bareback atop Gryphon. Your demon does a good job of maintaining a proud demeanor, even though it initially felt no small amount of fear when you explained the plan. To be fair, you would to, if you were the only one charging into the fray. Walking, in this case, but the point remains.

Good thing you left the sack of magnetite back in the car. You’re already a honey pot without the scent of magic mineral all over your body.

“We’re in position,” Victoria comes in through your ear, her voice distorted by the static of the radio. “We’ve got a clear shot right to his flanks. Fitz and I are ready to move in as soon as you give the signal.”

Brady is quick to chime in. “I’ve got a nice bead on him, ready to pop a fifty caliber right into his skull. Fitz, any luck with communications?”

“Negative,” She responds, audibly sour. “The dial tone’s workin’, but MacKay ain’t pickin’ up.”

Well that’s comforting. Not that you have the liberty to voice it. Especially since there’s an omnicidal, magnetite-sucking fire demon less than twenty meters away from you. You don’t want to give it the impression that there are allies waiting in the bushes if things go wrong.

But you’re seriously worried. MacKay is never one to not pick up the line. Something must have happened…dammit, Titania! The two of you are definitely going to have words when you get back, propriety be damned!

The demon snarls, the flames on its body flaring to sharp life as it stands up atop the rock. Even with its belly bulging with the flesh of Fomorians, the demon is still faster and lighter on its feet than you thought it would be. The damn thing’s only slightly bigger than the car, and if you had to guess, he weighs in at least a ton. Maybe even one and a half.

“Wait!” You raise your hand, a symbol of parley and non-aggression. “I just want to talk, that’s all there is to it…I’m not here to fight…” True on a technicality. Diplomacy before you try anything overtly aggressive, and only if your life gets endangered. “Alright, alright…before we all get too hot-headed, I just wanna ask a few questions. So…Salamander, why are you here? Why are you doing all of this?”

Salamander grows, a languid tongue sticking out of its jaws. “dEvIL sUmMoNeRr…” It hisses in a guttural voice. Without any warning, twin gouts of flame shoot out from its nostrils, little jets of liquid fire that scorch the ground before you. Flames crackle and race along the earth, only stopping two feet away from Gryphon, who neighs and bucks in protest.

Well this bodes poorly for diplomacy. On another note stat up social next time guys.

There is good news and bad news. The good news is that he’s definitely capable of rational thought and higher cognitive processes. That matches up with what sylph mentioned earlier, and you’ve got a shot at Demon Negotiation, no matter how small it might be. The bad news is that you’re not dealing with something that only relies purely on animal instinct.

Brady’s voice is grim, and you can hear him flick the safety off of his rifle. “If he does that again, I’m taking the shot. I’ve got patience for demon antics, but this guy’s not making it easy to hold fire.”

Fitz is not nearly as restrained. “Get the hell out of there!” She hisses. “That thing’s within strikin’ distance, whether or not you’ve got Gryphon to ride on or not.”

Ignorant of the COMP chatter in your ear, the demon continues. “yOU sEeK nEGoTiAtIon, sTInKiNg iN tHe BlOOd Of mY cOMrAdeS…tHe AUdAcItY…yOU aRe fORtUnaTe…i WoULd dEvOuR yOu mYSelF iF i We’RE nOT aLrEAdY gLutTeD wItH dEmONs’ FlEsH…bUt MaKe nO mIStAkE. iT woULd bE sO eASy tO sImPLy KilL YoU, aND lEaVE yOUr cORpsE foR thE mAgGOtS iN tHe DIrT…

In the end, you decide to keep calm, and refrain from giving the signal to lock on and engage. If you’re going to come to blows, you’re not the one that’s gonna fire the first bullet or spell.

“What’s your connection with Joseph Putnam and his sealing Grimoire?” You calmly ask. “You and all the other demons came out of that medical diary back in the museum. Six pages for six demons, and they all combine together to create a bigger summoning circle. Whatever it is you plan to do with it, and the magnetite you harvested, it ain’t gonna happen. You’re the last demon.”

The demon stirs, and its throat rumbles in an unrecognizable noise. Everyone tenses up, and you yourself have to resist the urge not to grab your sidearm, gently calming gryphon down with a firm hand. But nothing comes out of it, because as it turns out…the demon is laughing.

Amusement ripples across its body, and it is so caught up in its throes of guttural laughter that it cannot maintain its composure. The noise becomes choked, and the demon disgorges part of its meal, vomiting steaming, stinking demon meat and stomach acid onto the ground, even as it continues to laugh. It is an exercise of willpower to keep your gag reflex in check as the wind blows the foul stench in your direction.

“Shiwanna has passed, too?” It eventually rumbles, its voice more coherent than it had been when its belly was distorted with meat. “…so that is why my hunger has increased. Human…you not know the folly of your actions…and their terrible consequences…

“But you mention Joseph Putman,” it snarls, “A name I’ve not heard for over three hundred years…and his grimoire that kept us sealed in the mystic vellum as time marched on…”

“Who is he to you?” You repeat yourself, more firmly than before. “How are you two related?”

Its laughter turns into a croak, smoke trailing out of its nostrils and mouth as it continues to speak. “You amuse me, human, believing that you have all the answers in the palm of your hand. I know why you are here. You seek to kill me, and vindicate yourself in the eyes of your peers. Yet you know nothing, Devil Summoner. You know nothing at all…

“Hmmm…I will not kill you. No. I will wait for despair and horror to truly come to grip you. That would be more pleasing than to feast on your flesh or to see you broken upon the ground.”

The midday sun is not blocked by the clouds, and the temperature is as mild as it can be in the summer. Yet as the demon continues to luxuriate upon its rock, you can feel a cold trickle of sweat going down the length of your spine.

“So…you ask about Joseph Putnam…” It intones, “But I am very curious. Why do you think we were sealed away in that grimoire? What do you think the six of us were?”

Fitz cuts in. “He’s just stallin’ for time. I dunno how quickly demons can digest their meat, but he’s got less to do than he did before you started talkin’.”

“Yes, but it goes both ways,” Victoria counters. “Keep talking, Adrian. It’s almost been two hours. We can buy time for MacKay to come with his new demon.”

You make no overt motion, only giving a slight nod of acknowledgement to your teammates. With their advice noted, you continue to stall for time, racking your brain for an answer. Trapped in the book…old American Devil Summoners, predating the founding of the Devil Busters. You give the most logical answer to the demon’s inquiry.

“Prisoners,” you reply with a frown, “The most logical answer would be that you’re prisoners. It’s no different from a COMP in that it takes a human to gain or capture a demon, only to never use them or just leave them trapped forever. You prey on children indiscriminately, are little more than mad beasts. Whoever managed to trap you in there didn’t do a proper job, or wasn’t strong enough to kill you.”

Hushed responses all around. And even the demon seems to be impressed by your train of logic. “A valiant effort of deduction from what you have available. But alas, Devil Summoner…you truly know nothing…” It shakes its head, hissing once more. “Your ignorance and the assumptions you have made will cost you dearly in the hours to come…”

Then, its eyes meet your gaze, reptilian slits within crimson irises staring intensely at your green. And as it opens its mouth, you can sense a sort of self-satisfied vindication.

“What if were you tell you," It grins, "That Doctor Joseph Putnam of Salem, Massachusetts was my master and Summoner…and that the roles that my comrades and I played in that book were not that of prisoners…but of wardens and guards?”

>Meanwhile…
>The American Historical Society Museum
>Lebanon, Kentucky

The museum is closed for the festival, with the replications and portable relics carted out onto the green for the general public. The only ones that are left in the building are the staff members, scurrying about taking care of paperwork and last minute preparations. And security guards, who will eventually change their shift in an hour. It is only fair that everyone experiences this year’s Fourth of July.

It is sure to be a festival that no one will forget.

“Hurry, hurry, hurry!” Doctor Capretta claps his hands together, ushering in a cart of replica muskets and foam tomahawks. The fact that he hasn’t tripped over his boots or torn a hole in his breeches is a miracle in of itself. “The battle reenactment begins in a few hours, and we can’t find the explosives technician! Lisa, have you seen him?”

The blonde shakes her head, taking care not to upset the white cap on her head. The things she’s willing to do for course credits…still, as far as extra credit went, dressing up like a colonial isn’t so bad. “Yes, he said that he’s inspecting the cannons. Just arrived here a few minutes ago, with all the black powder in his truck.”

The professor grins underneath the white powder wig and tricorne hat. “Oh, thank you! I honestly don’t know what I’d do without you.”
She accepts the praise with a quick nod, even as the actors begin to spill into the corridor. “I’m sure you’d get along well enough, sir,” She answers, even as she begins to distribute the weapons. “You play the ‘eccentric professor’ well, but that doesn’t mean you have to downplay your talents.”

Native Americans, Redcoat soldiers and Minutemen alike come to be “armed” for the reenactment of the battle. Tomahawks are redistributed to the Wyandots, feathered headdresses catching the air conditioner as they test their weapons. Redcoats and colonials jibe at each other as they receive muskets. Blank cartridges will be distributed by the firearms expert.

“Boo,” The professor laughs, reaching into his belt for a corncob pipe. “It’s a smash hit with college kids. Because I’m not exactly Indiana Jones, but I’m definitely a far cry from the stuffy, cob-webbed history professors that don’t even go outside!”

That much is true, much to the agreement of the assembled actors. She has seen many of them in classes and field projects, all of them underneath the exciting and unexpected Doctor Capretta. They can all testify to the effectiveness of his methods and its enthusiastic response.

Speaking of which. “Professor, wasn’t there an artifact that you needed to grab? There’s that rusted collection of bayonets and bowie knives that the local middle school kids wanted to see.”

“Ah! I’ll get right on it!”

Capretta dashes into the next room, disappearing from Lisa’s sight. It doesn’t take long for her attention to return back to the actors, who motion for her to join them outside. They all need to take pictures before the battle begins. With a smile on her face and a call that she’ll “Be right back!”, Lisa exits the museum and joins the troupe.

It may well be the last time she sees him.

“Bayonets, bayonets…” The professor mutters in the next room over, fishing a ring of keys out of his pocket as he fumbles at the stockroom latch. “Where did we put those bayonets?”

He is too busy struggling with the ancient lock to notice the display of Joseph Putnam’s diary. Underneath tempered glass and a secure lock, the letters on the pages begin to glow an ominous red in the gentle sunlight. The pages that are still bound together begin to flutter at an alarming rate, tearing themselves from half-disintegrated leather to press against the glass, pounding repeatedly at the display that keeps it trapped within.

“Yankee Doodle went to town / Riding on a pony…” The professor hums, crying triumphantly as the lock finally catches and lets him access into the storage room. “Stuck a feather in his cap / And called it mac-”

He is unable to finish the verse. With a final moan, the glass explodes, and the pages of Putnam’s grimoire tear themselves away from their display. Caught off guard, Capretta’s face turns from one of joviality to fear, crying out in alarm as he tries to protect his face from shards of glass. The wind howls, a noise impossible by a natural gust, and the six pages hover in the room.

Shouts come from the security guards upstairs, and the sound of hurried footsteps sounds throughout the museum for the first time in as many ears. But they will be too late. Eyes wide and mouth quivering, all Capretta can do is stare, helplessly transfixed and cornered as unholy runes flare across the parchment. They come together as one, interlocking to form a pentagram that blazes red with inhuman fury.

And with a sound of tearing paper and the sound of shattering ice, the pentagram flares, bright enough to cause the professor to shield his eyes from the pain of the light. He is vulnerable here, and that is what the presence within the pages exploits, gibbering and howling in delight as it sunders the shackles of over three hundred years of solitude.

It is that quick. The only sight that Capretta has past watering eyes is that of a monster, a demon straight out of the darkest tales of the old world that rushes towards him, talons outstretched and eyes blazing.

The security guards enter the room, tasers and nightsticks drawn and at the ready. They had come with the full intent to find the professor wounded and lying on the ground, with a display broken and its contents looted. Instead, the professor merely stumbles about, clutching his head and moaning in agony.

They are quick to notice the glass shards, and the fragments that cut slightly into the curator’s hands.

“Shit,” the first one says, motioning towards his partner. He nods, taser still at the ready as he scans for a possible hostile. “Professor, are you alright? Here, take my hand. What happ-?”

Capretta…the right word to use would be glitches, jerking once before suddenly appearing in front of the guard, less than three inches away from his face. He doesn’t even have time to even finish his sentence and step away before an iron grip snatches the hand offered to the curator. There is a sickening crunch, the sound of bones grinding against each other and pain explodes in the guard’s hand.

Even as he screams, dropping his nightstick to clutch the mangled ruin of his hand, Capretta smiles, too wide, too malevolent to resemble anything human. “Oh, everything’s quite alright,” He gleefully says, madness dancing within crimon eyes, “Everything is could not be better…palefaces!!!”

You do a good job of not panicking. The extent of your increasing anxiety is the tightening of your hand around Gryphon’s mane. Your demon lets out a pained squawk, and you quickly check your grip. Oh, dear. Oh, dear. Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

“If you’re a warden,” You slowly intone, “Then who or what was it that you were guarding?”

The Salamander smiles. “Are you familiar with the story of Mad Henry?” The look on your face is enough to cause it to laugh again. “Surprising that you recognize it. Very well. Here’s what your story tellers aren’t telling you.

“Henry was the village outcast, a fatherless child born to a whore in a Puritan community. How do you think he felt, growing up like something little better than what you scrape off the bottom of one’s boot? Out of all the other villagers, there was only one individual who treated him nicely, would bring him food and scraps of clothing when times got tough. Who do you think that is?”

It hits you like a wrecking ball. “Rachel,” You whisper. “The girl in the story.”

The demon nods. “Correct. Rachel was the only one who treated Henry better than all the others. Some say that he was a pet at best, but he still latched onto her like he was a drowning sailor, clinging onto a lifeline. Eventually, her parents forbade her from seeing him, but it did not stop the two of them from sending letters to each other, hidden inside tree trunks and underneath stone and cranny. It was hard for him not to fall in love with her. Not that he ever could stop himself, the poor bastard.

“Now, when Rachel comes of age, her parents wish for her to be wed to this eligible bachelor, an officer of the British navy from Boston. They took a liking to each other, and soon, the letters to Henry slow down, and when they do come, she’s excited about marrying this man. His heart couldn’t take it, and he disappeared from his little hut in the outskirts of Salem for weeks.”

The demon pauses. “I don’t know how he did it, but as a child, he came into contact with something or someone that taught him in the dark arts, how to bind demons and spirits to do his will. It could have been a human interloper, like a dark shaman or traveling skinwalker, but it could have easily been a demon. But the point is moot. By the time Rachel was announcing her marriage, Henry was well-practiced in summoning demons to do his bidding, just as much as you might be.

“He might have been fine with this, broken hearted, but still fine enough. Until Rachel eloped with her husband-to-be, to get married in Boston in private away from the Puritans. That was the final straw.” The demon pauses, belching a plume of smoke as its stomach rumbles. “Pardon me. Where was I? Right. The elopement. So, distraught and feeling helpless, he does the only thing that he can do.

“The poor boy went and prayed inside his summoning circle, begging and offering any price so as long as Rachel would be his and his alone. And in the darkness, in that woods soaked in the blood of settlers and Indians…something answered his prayers.”

The demon sniffs. “The Ojuibwe call it ‘Bakaak’, and the Algonquins refer to it as ‘Pakàk’. I suppose the traders who exchanged furs and rifles with the indigenous people would call it ‘Baykok’. Regardless of its title, it remained the same: a malevolent spirit of death, an emaciated skeleton with translucent skin and glowing red point for eyes. It finds livers to be a delicacy, did you know that? And its favorite prey consists of warriors…regardless of their skin color.”

Baykok…Baykok…you run the name a few times in your head, visualizing the true enemy that you have to face. A malevolent spirit. That sounds right up your alley. Damn shame you didn’t bring the shotgun shells with rocksalt-

The COMP crackles to life, and Brady’s voice hisses into your ear in an urgent tone, “Working on it now. Researching, compiling a report…c’mon, c’mon, don’t tell me we can’t get access to the archives from here…”

“MacKay…” Victoria is desperate, and you can hear her tuning into different frequencies. “Please pick up, please pick up, please pick up…”

“Oh…shit…” When Fitz heard about the truth of what happened to Madison and Brenda back in Delaware, she had been pissed. For the first time, you can hear fear in her voice. “Sawbones, the historical reenactment! They’re all gonna be dressed up like frickin’ colonials and Indians, pretending to slug it out on the field! It’s a goddamn buffet for the demon!”

Oh, that is definitely not good!

“But let me finish my story,” The demon continues, its smile growing wider at your growing discomfort. “I see that you are truly distressed, so I will hurry along. To keep things brief, the demon possesses young Henry, and rides his body to commit terrible atrocities. Cannibalism, murder, and all other manner of debauchery. In exchange, the demon kidnaps Rachel and kills her husband, only it stays in control of Henry’s body when she's in his possession. The boy wasn’t strong enough to reassert his will over the demon. He had to watch as Baykok tortured and brutalized Rachel for an entire year, begging for death, pleading for it to stop, desperately screaming apologies to the love of his life…

“Now, you’re wondering where Putnam and I fit into all of this? He received tutoring from an English Summoner, a magician who was a doctor in Joseph’s university. I was his ‘graduation’ gift, and personally bore witness to the attack on the wedding reception. He was friends with Rachel’s husband, the poor navy officer. We tracked Henry down, eventually confronting him in the wilder parts of Massachusetts. Rachel’s spirit was only able to break free after we absolutely destroyed Henry’s body, but Baykok would not die. It was too powerful, and we didn’t have the means or power to control or destroy it.

“So, we did the next best thing we could. We sealed it away, with Putnam sacrificing six of his demons, myself included, to keep it locked within his grimoire. He locked it inside of a chest, filled it with pure silver, and buried it in an unmarked location within the wilderness of the colonies. He hoped that someone would not find it, unearth the chest and unleash an ancient evil back into the world. And clearly…that has failed spectacularly. And in no small part in thanks to you.”

The Salamander smiles thinly. “We did not expect to find ourselves in the waking world once more. The seal was damaged in the process of extraction, and it was bleeding energy. We were desperate to protect the world our master once walked upon, so we took it upon ourselves to find…alternate sources of energy.

“In my defense, I argued in favor of harvesting demons. The others disagreed. Shiwanna led the others to harvest energy from human children. I admit that he was very efficient in doing so. He would have even released the kids every few months, found new ones to take their place. He had no desire to murder them. And so, we managed to keep the seal intact for the better half of a year...until you came along and ruined everything. Congratulations. Ignorance is no excuse. You are now partially responsible for unleashing a terrible evil of the old world into the new millennia.”

The demon pauses, considering you. “I have crawled upon the earth for centuries, and you humans never cease to amaze me. So sure of yourselves in how you live your lives…so prone to emotional outbursts and moments of madness…so…weak…”

…nope, you’re not having any of it, and right now, you can feel your anxiety melting away, replaced with a churning anger. The demon is trying to cast blame onto you, you who only did the natural thing to, you know, SAVE THE FUCKING CHILDREN. Oh, no. That pyromaniac is NOT going to play the blaming game with you.

“There was an entire kingdom of fairies, literally the next dimension over,” You snarl from atop Gryphon, who trills lowly in tune with your emotions. The faces of your siblings flash before your eyes: Sophia, Jack, Maddie, Peter and little Katherine. Any and all of them could’ve been inside of that freezer, and the image alone is enough to set your temper on fire. “That could have helped you with keeping the demon sealed away. You might have been able to pass on a message, through them and to other Devil Summoners. Instead of doing that, you just stood by and let your buddies prey upon children. Children who have nothing to at all with your predicament!

“No, the onus falls on you ‘wardens’, you stupid, fucking idiots who were too concerned with a quick fix! Did you not think that someone wouldn’t come to investigate? We happen to value the lives of children very much. Do you think that’s changed in the years that you’ve been asleep? I’ll admit that I’ve made my side of the bed, but you’ve dug your own grave when you gave your companions a free pass on the children of Lebanon!”

The Salamander roars, spewing fire into the air as it rises from its rock. “Don’t test my patience, human! It is only that I find your panic to be amusing that I let you live and squirm! After all that I’ve told you, you still know nothing!

“I don’t know the nature of your relationship with Titania, and I don’t need to know. But I can tell you this with absolute certainty. The fae only make deals when it benefits them. And there’s no gift that you’ll receive that comes without strings attached. I would not enslave my companions to the whims of those fickle wenches, or trust to pass a message to ignorant humans!”

Something to worry about later, but that's not the main concern. There’s a little noise as the last barrier of your self-control just…shatters like glass. “Really?! Really! Because it looks like the two of us are the same, just knocking around the town without as much as a clue as to what’s actually going on!

“We could have avoided all of this,” You scream, arms outstretched as you gesticulate to nothing in particular. “The death of your companions, the inevitable escape of the demon…all of this, we could’ve avoided if we just sat down and talked! I know that we at least tried to make contact before we were forced to defend ourselves, but I don’t know about you! Did you even bother checking to ask whether or not Shiwanna was obtaining the children’s permission before it literally began to drain them of their life force-”

“ENOUGH!” The demon stomps on the ground, crushing its perch into smithereens as it lunges towards you, maw open wide as fire gathers in its throat. “HUUUUMMMMAAAANNNN----!!”

There is a sharp noise, and a crack in the air as Brady fires into the demon’s throat. The bullet, hot and burning from its launch, ignites the gas within the demon’s throat. A chain reaction of explosions detonates within its body, causing visible damage, cracks and spouts of blood to splurt out of its body.

Unable to stop itself, the demon crashes into the dirt, blood and half-digested food leaking from out of its mouth. It moans pitifully, the fires along its body sputtering out like a stove without any fuel. It tries to get up, only for Gryphon to slam it back down onto the ground, a wicked claw wrapped tight around its neck.

“We could play the shouting game for the rest of the week, but I don’t have any time for that. Right now, you’ve got a choice,” You mutter, digging the barrel of your carbine right into the demon’s skull. “You were the warden of this thing for the last three hundred years. I’m gonna cowboy up and stop your prisoner. So, I ask you this: will you help us? Or will you stand in our way?”

You emphasize the question by pressing the barrel of your gun deeper into its tough hide, hard enough to draw blood from the point of contact. “It’s all on you, demon.”

“…I will…aid…you” The demon croaks, somehow managing to enunciate the words past the ruin of its throat. “…please…don’t...kill…me…”

“That remains to be seen,” You grunt, gesturing for gryphon to let him up. “You live…for now. Maybe even long enough to fix the hole we’ve dug ourselves into. But don’t mistake this for clemency or a moment of weakness. If you as much as even look at me in a funny way…”

You hold a hand up, snapping your fingers. Another shot rings out across the wilderness, and dust kicks up only a few inches from Salamander’s head.

“I won’t even hesitate to have you put into the ground. Are we clear?”

“…transparently…” Salamander whispers. “But…there’s something you should know…the demon is already loose…”

Your blood runs cold, and you can’t help but dig even harder into the demon’s skull. “AND YOU DIDN’T THINK TO TELL ME?!”

“I felt it…as we were talking…” The demon groans, “But know this…so long as I remain alive…I seal away part of his power. Kill me…and you fight him at full strength…”

>Regrouping

“Shit, shit, shit!” Fitz stops her pacing as soon as you come bounding up the hill, leaping off of gryphon to rejoin with the others. “Sawbones, we gotta move!”

Brady nods, packing up his rifle and computer into his bag. “Agreed. We’re out of range of any signal here, and HQ needs to know. And we still can’t get a lock on for MacKay.”

The three of you nod, and are already sprinting back to the car as Victoria calls out. “Wait!” She cries, panting as she struggles to catch up to your frantic pace, “Shouldn’t we let Queen Titania know about the situation? Maybe we could ask for help from her! If the demon is as bad as Salamander says it is, then we’re going to need all the help we can get!”

“No time!” You counter, easily making the decision as you reach within sight of the burnt-out clearing. “If what Salamander said is true, then that demon’s already wreaking havoc on the town! We need damage control and a rapid response!”

Victoria seems a little deflated at that, but she nods, sprinting around the car to hop into the driver’s seat. “Okay, but if we can’t stop in person, don’t you think we should at least pass a message onto her? Let her know that, oh you know, there’s a liver-eating, warrior-hunting demon only a few miles away from the entrance to the realm?”

Fitz and Brady only manage to jump into the car as she starts the engine and floors the gas. There’s little time for a carefully planned route, and the car blasts through the wilderness as fast as you can go. Bumps be damned.

“I could have Mokoi run a message to the court,” Brady offers, frantically tapping at his COMP and laptop. “That way we’ve at least warned her, if not secured reinforcements in the nick of time. She’ll know it’s from us. Little guy isn’t common around these parts…”

“Do it,” You order, “And do you have anything on the demon? This…Baykok?”

He nods. “Okay…according an old legend…it says in his aspect of death, he shies away from fire and likes to hide in the dark-”

“Good enough for me!” Fitz grouses, gesturing to you with an outstretched hand. “I’m gonna be needin’ those Fire Rounds., Sawbones. I didn’t have time to get new demons, and right now, I need to level the playin’ field as best as I can with my current stock. So do ya mind?”

You shake your head, reaching into the back of the car to pull out the ammunition container. “No, none at all. Take as much as you need.”

“Much obliged.”

You continue to prepare in silence, drafting battle plans and strategies along the way. Even with established signal, you’re still unable to raise MacKay. Now you’re definitely worried, but it’s going to have to wait. Brady manages to send a report to central, apprising them of the situation. Not two minutes go by when a reply is given to all of you, spread out across your COMPs.

Mission objective: slay Baykok by whatever means necessary, protect the civilians in immediate danger.

Alger isn’t on base, but Squad Bootes recently got back from a mission. They’re loading them up in a helicopter and flying them out to Kentucky. ETA is about three or four hours. Too late to have any significant impact or aid in the immediate fight, but probably best for cleanup duty.

When Victoria bursts out of the wilderness and into the boundaries of the kingdom, Brady rolls down his window and summons Mokoi. “Go, little buddy! You heard what we said, right? You need to get the message to Titania as fast as you can, alright!”

“Yes, sir, Mister Summoner!” The doll bobs its head before flying out of the car, hobbling as fast as he can towards the main road of the kingdom.

Ten minutes later, the Cadillac tears out of the portal between realms, tires squealing as they transition from dirt to pavement. With a flick of a switch at Victoria’s dashboard, the overhead sirens turn on, and you blaze down the country road and merge onto the highway as fast as you can. The time is one-thirty-nine in the afternoon.

“So what’s our plan of attack?” Fitz calls, strapping the last magazine of fire rounds to her vest.

You grunt as Victoria swerves to avoid a jeep. “We start at the museum, then work our way and try to figure out what the hell’s happened since the demon broke free. Brady mentioned an aversion to light, so maybe it’s gonna be lurking somewhere until it gets dark enough.”

“We’re not exactly in plainsclothes,” Brady mutters, gesturing to the Kevlar. “Even if we ditch the helmets, we’re still gonna stick out like a sore thumb.”

“I’d rather have that than a whole lot of dead people,” You snap. “Besides, we can always show I.D. since we are, on a technicality, employees of the government. Fuck yeah, special privileges.”

“Yeah, that’s great and all, but seriously. Where the bloody hell is MacKay? We could really use the extra gun and demon power!”

Fitz makes a noise of disapproval. “Doesn’t matter. We’ve got a job to do, whether we like it or not. We’ll just read him the riot act later.”

“Sounds good to me!”

>The Museum
>1:54 PM

The exterior looks relatively intact, still hovering in that tentative state between refurbished and disrepair. Thankfully, a majority of the townsfolk have relocated elsewhere for the festival, either at the Graham Memorial Park or at Country View for the folks with RVs. The streets are empty, with only a few cars passing by at every odd interval or so.

Perfect time for deployment.

Victoria hops the curb, skidding to park at an odd angle at the main driveway of the museum. By the time she’s turning the key and setting the parking break, you’re already halfway out of the car. Fitz takes point, shotgun raised as you follow her into the main lobby, Brady and Vic trailing behind you.

It’s a mess, like a great and violent wind tore through the area. Brochures are scattered around the lobby, posters and flyers about the displays or the festival just laying about the floor. Anything that isn’t nailed down or affixed to the wall with a strong agent is either broken or scattered at random.

“Shit,” the policewoman quietly mutters, keeping her shotgun up as you advance toward Putnam’s display. “Looks like a hurricane went through here. Brady, I thought you said it was an ice demon.”

He coughs. “Never said that. It’s shy of fire and light.”

“Doesn’t matter what it is,” You mutter, finger hovering outside the trigger guard of your carbine. You take care not to step on any paper that might cause unnecessary noise. “Because we’ll find out what works and what doesn’t work in due time.”

“Shh!” Victoria holds up a hand, motioning for you to be silent. “I think I heard something that wasn’t the AC!”

Black Frost would be neat and make sense for the amount of trouble MacKay would have to go through, but it might be too.....overused?

Oberon would be pretty funny as a temporary ally. Definitely feel weird about having him semi-permanently, though.

King Frost would make sense in that Titania's getting competition for the throne off her list of problems.

Unicorn? Not that high-tier, though.
>>
Huh, guess I didn't miss the fight after all.
>>
>>863467
Oberon is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay too strong for a permanent party member. At his lowest level he's still 40s and can go as high as 60.

Black Frost is usually in the 30s and still too high, also EVIL AS FUCK.

King Frost Is likewise too high for Mackay being in the 30s.

Unicorn is doable, although if we're doing fae horses he might get something that is nightmare inducing that we've already fought if Titania has a sense of humor.

This thing has been sitting on my ass ever since April. What I thought was going to be 3,000 words at best stretched out to 7,000 and upwards of fifteen pages and a complete revision. And to be frank, this was an exercise in writing smut in the second person perspective. For TF666, not quite happy with what I have, but I'm going to finish it. This one felt like pulling teeth since I felt like I was repeating myself in a few places. And I think I was trying for too much detail since of the whole "le questing format immersion" second person perspective. Some words work better than others. I'm fine with using words like "cock", but using "pussy" feels...weird in a literary sense in that it feels too crude, like bad fanfiction smut. "Penis" and "vagina" feel too clinical and unromantic.

Maybe I'm still not used to smutty crudities, so I probably need to overcome that. There's only so many synonyms and euphemisms I can use to describe a vagina.

Future smut is definitely going to be shorter. I've learned what to cut out and include, maximize efficiency. It's bonus material, and if someone's gonna jack off to it, I have to make it quick. 8k words is a long time for someone to get their rocks off to. 3k is fine.

All things aside, I'm still happy with how it turned out. Considering the fact that I've only gone to third base because I'm a good lawfag who's waiting for marriage.
>>
>>866364
It's going to be bad news no matter how it's introduced unless we are full on Chaos somewhere down the line.

I think you are thinking of Mitama.

Magatama is the bug that Lucifer gives you that turns you into a demon like Demifiend.
>>
>>866577
Oh no doubt...game-wise. If it was you though it might not be so simple. Potentially losing your humanity, not having a strong will to keep your mind and body under your control...IF we get that option, it would more than likely be against our will (remember the text conversations?) if the majority don't want to go the Chaos route AND we'd need one hell of a set of rolls to keep Adrian's mind in check if he's the one who gets it. Someone else, whether they're in Carina or not, is a whole different can of worms.
>>
>>866577
Yeah but do we really want to give up our humanity to become Demi-Feind.
I mean i would do it, but i don't think Adrian would.
I see him as a Light Chaos type of guy you know. He still understands the place of authority but he isn't afraid to break the rules if they get in the way of doing his job. And i really don't think Adrian gives too fucks about what God thinks about a given situation.
>>
>>866627
Adrian is solidly Light-Neutral without a doubt though I wonder will Reasons have a role in this quest?
>>
>>866746

Humans are rather...fluid beings. Reasons that sound at home in the Law camp could inspire one to take a Chaos route, and vice versa. Light is not good, dark is not evil, etc. All these things, big and small, could lead anywhere. Not to mention a certain event in one's life could completely change their view and stance in the world. Reasons, maybe, but normal reasons can cause plenty all on their own.

Fitz shoots the thing on principle because FUCK no that's not going in her mouth. Then Victoria eats it willingly.

And Brady starts employing magatama users as his main force, demons who follow the curve without needing fusion.

Okay, deleted it. Just reposting for the sake of posterity so that it doesn't get confused in the archive.

Yeah. You can hear it, too. As opposed to the dry and constant whir of the machine, it’s been replaced by a wet, rasping noise. You can hear objects clinking with each other, like some kind of macabre wind chime, rattling in the draft that comes in through the entrance.

Fitz holds up a fist, and gestures for everyone to get into cover behind her. You follow suit as she advances towards the first exhibit, where Putnam’s grimoire is located. Flicking the safety off her gun, she dives into the room, disappearing from sight with no little more than a whoosh of air.

Not that she remains silent for long. As soon as the noise of her fall stops, a string of obscenities comes out of her lips. “Motherfuck - everyone, get in here, now!”

She doesn’t need to ask twice. The three of you sprint in, guns at the ready and COMPS ready to summon, expecting the demon to be in the center of the room. Instead, what greets you makes you almost wish that you had run Baykok.

In the center of the exhibit, the bodies of two men in security uniforms hang from the ceiling. Strung up by their intestines that wrap around their feet, they sway in the draft, alongside chimes made of bloody bones. Ribs, you numbly realize, the marrow still a fresh red and brown as they stick out from cracks along the bone.

Your training kicks in, overriding your horror and panic, and you cast an eye over the extent of the damage. Severe damage to the abdominal and chest cavity, bones ripped out and skin barely holding all the organs in place. Their livers are missing, and you numbly stare at the place where a series of claw marks stretch along the abdominal, where blood leaks out to pool onto the varnished floor. The fact that there isn’t as much given the extent of their injuries is nothing short of a medical miracle. No, not even that.

Just as you think that they’re dead, one of them lets out a gurgling breath, almost choking on his own blood as a swollen eye tries to track your location. His voice is raw, either from screaming or from the fluid that catches tight in his throat, and his words come out as a rasping plea. “…help…us…pleaaaassssssssse…”

Victoria retches, not even able to make it to a garbage bin before doubling over and vomiting out breakfast. The others do a better job of holding breakfast in. Brady remains as pale as a sheet, even as he goes over to hold her hair back.

Even so, the Englishman’s voice is trembling in horror. “Oh, God…” He has to swallow before contining. “Those poor bastards…they’re...they’re done for…”

“They aren’t dead yet,” Fitz snarls, shotgun still darting around the room in furious search for a target, “But they’re gonna be if we don’t get them help. And soon.”

What can you do? You almost want to shout it at her. The damage is catastrophic, and the fact that they’re still alive is either a testament to their willpower or the demon’s cruelty to not put them out of their misery. It would take a miracle to help…

Miracle. That’s it!

“Vicky, grab that chair. Brady, I’m gonna need a hand in a moment,” You order, shouldering your gun and pulling up your COMP. Angel and High Pixie are summoned in an instant, materializing from your device to stand guard behind you. Their faces contort into ones of horror and surprise to match your own, but they quickly adopt masks of calm, ready to respond to your orders. “Fitz, keep an eye out for Baykok. These are his victims, right? If so, he might just come back to finish the job…”

“Mate, what?” Brady repeats, staring at you incredulously, even as Fitz nods sharply. “What’d you think you’re doing?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” You snap, directing your demons to fall into step as you approach the first man. “I’m going to save their lives. Angel, High Pixie, start healing the worst of the scratches. Don’t get near the intestines. I’m saving that for last, do you understand?”

“Yes, master!/Alright!” They reply, quickly going to work with healing magic. An aura of white light shines from their hands as they gently go over the worst of the injuries.

With Brady’s help, Victoria manages to wobbly stand back up, wiping her mouth with a nearby brochure. “R-right…” She mutters, letting out a tiny “ULP” before staggering to grab the aforementioned chair.

“What? Adrian…look, I get that you want to save them, really I do, but…I…” The hacker gestures helplessly towards the men. “…they’re dying…I don’t need a degree to see it…and they’re also in horrific condition. That looks like it hurts, really bad, worse than...you know...stuff in the hospital. Wouldn’t it just...just be just easier to…”

You glare at him as you open up a first aid kit. “To do what? Just put them out of their misery?”

Mollified, he looks like he would shout before sighing in defeat. “No, but…you don’t even have your medical degree, let alone a license to practice...”

“That doesn’t matter!” You snap, quickly sticking both of them with a shot of liquid morphine. “I’d rather have them die on my hands having tried to help them than just let them die on their own or kill them myself! That’s not the kind of healer I want to be!”

He’s silent at that, pale even as Victoria comes over with the chair. You thank her, quickly stepping up, going as high as you can. You’re just able to reach the crude hook where the intestines have been penetrated, wrapping around the metal in a tight knot.

“Shit…” You curse. This is gonna be a mess. In more ways than one. You sanitized your hands, but with their organs exposed and already perforated…not good. “Brady, Vic. Gimme a hand, I have to get them off the hooks before their entire digestive system gets pulled out of their bodies.”

That seems to be enough of a motivator, that is to say not having to bear witness to that sight. The two of them gingerly, heads recoiled as they slowly help you bring down the bodies of the men. Both of them are green at the gills as you undo the first one, careful to hold the intestine in place as you step down from the chair. The other one comes down just as slowly, just as carefully as High Pixie moves to heal both of them.

The first aid kit comes with all the tools to perform a basic field surgery. Not that you’re going to be picking up the scalpel. No, it’s the forceps that have your primary interest, and those you pick up along with pointed tweezers.

Right now, you need to repair the damaged paths left from the removal of the liver. Your teammates watch in mortified curiosity as you grip the ends of the bile ducts and esophagus, gingerly bringing them to High Pixie and Angel. “Don’t want any internal bleeding,” You mutter, wincing away at the bright light that accompanies the regeneration of the flesh. “Best to fix that first before putting everything back in…”

With internal hemorrhaging out of the way, as well as repairing the worst of the damaged intestines, all that’s left is…putting everything back into place. The hard part. Because you’re not sure if healing magic is gonna just…suck everything back into order, and you have little desire to try and find out-

Suddenly, the air changes. Gooseflesh appears on your skin, brought on not by fear or anxiety, but a change in the temperature. Brady and Victoria are quick to notice it also, eyes widening in fear as they scramble for their COMPS. But it is too late.

“PALEFACES!” Without any warning, a skeletal visage bursts into the room, headdress and bones rattling as it charges towards your position. Baykok raises a terrible machete as he bears down upon you. “Spoiling my meat! Spoiling my prey! You will pay dearly for this trans-”

A deafening BOOM goes off from the corner of the room, and gouts of flame and buckshot send the demon careening sideways. It doesn’t have time to even get up, screeching at the fire that licks at its body as Fitz advances, pumping her shotgun and taking aim once more. “EAT SHIT, MOTHERFUCKER!”

>You will now be playing as Fitz while Adrian heals the security guards.

>Fitz hit Baykok’s weakness, stunning it.

You go by Fitz nowadays, ex-police officer of Fairfax, Virginia and current Devil Summoner of Task Force 666. That isn’t your real name, just a shortening of your last name “Fitzgerald”. There’s only a small number of people who know your first name, and a smaller few that have the privilege to call you such. Anyone that does otherwise has either gotten a vicious tongue lashing or a straight to the jaw.

And that isn’t much a people problem as much as it has to do with your own issues. Enough issues to fill an entire fuckin’ year’s worth of subscription to National Geographic. But, that doesn’t really matter. Because right now, you’re having a terrible, horrible, no good, incredibly shitty bad day that only seems to get worse with every passin' second.

It’s thanks to this asshole of a skeleton that your plans for R&R got effectively screwed. Be that as it may, you’re quite grateful for him to show up. Really, you are. Especially since the target of your irritation and the cause of the entire case’s problems just so happened to put its skeletal ass right in the line of your shotgun’s sights.

“And a happy ‘fuck you’ to you as well!” You accentuate the end of your sentence with a blast from your shotgun. And this time, you manage to crack bits of its skull apart, powder some of its ribs into fine grains of dust. Judging from its scream of pain, that had to have hurt. A lot.

>Baykok is moderately wounded!

“WOMAN!” It chatters, scrabbling along the wall, talons digging into the paint and wood. “WOMAN WARRIOR! RESTRICTIONS LIFTED! YOU ARE TARGET AS WELL!”

Damn straight you are. Because the more the bastard pays attention to you, the better of a time Sawbones has to patch up the security schmucks back together.

Cackling, it descends from the wall. You throw yourself to the side, dodging a crude and awkward swipe as you roll into a firing position. “YOUR LIVER MUST TASTE WONDERFUL! EVEN BETTER THAN RACHEL’S! WILL IT BE SWEET? SUCCULENT? FILLED WITH DELICIOUS ENERGY-”

“Shut it!” Brady and Victoria add their own covering fire, peppering the demon with their own rounds. The demon barely seems to notice theirs, only grunting in irritation as bullets bounce off its body. It doesn’t have eyes or lashes, but the way it cocks its head at the sight of their demons, summoned and priming spells, tells you that it’s worried.

It snarls, picking itself up before you can even fire off another round. “WON’T FORGET! WON’T FORGET! KNOW YOUR FACES, KNOW YOUR SCENTS!” Cackling, it sprints off deeper into the museum, disappearing from sight just as it leaps over a table. Brady curses as the last of his rounds miss, instead hitting nearby artifacts and objects.

You can’t help but wince as a particularly expensive-looking vase shatters. That’s gonna be someone’s paycheck.

“You’re not gettin’ away!” Lham Dearg and Apsaras appear in a flash of light, and you bark orders to them as you lower your COMP. “Lham, you’re on point! Apsaras, you’re in the back. Remember our training?”

The Scottish demon laughs, grabbing a nearby bit of debris, a table with crayons and coloring books. After snapping some of the legs off and jamming one of his swords as a handle, he’s got himself a crude riot shield. Not bad at all.

“You orders are my command, mistress.” Apsaras intones. “The filth will not touch you.”

Before any of them complain, you sprint, hot on the demon’s trail as you follow the noise it makes. The clang of relics hitting the ground and furniture overturned is more than enough of a trail to lead you straight to the demon. “Keep an eye on Sawbones!” You shout back to Brady and Victoria. “I’ll keep you posted as we go along!”

Adrian looks up, his fingers halfway into someone’s midsection with a look of alarm on his face. “Fitz, wait-”

“This is a bad idea-” Victoria begins, reloading her gun.

“I’m coming with you, wait for me!” Brady huffs and wheezes, managing to catch up to you, demons right on his heels. The dog demon is new, but Jack Frost is a familiar enough sight.

Your eyes flash dangerously as you glare at the hacker. “Don’t help! Get back to the others before I kick yer ass back there myself!”

“Are you insane?” He retorts, fingers clenched tight around his rifle in a white-knuckled grip. “Going after the demon all by your bloody self? That’s a horror movie cliché just waiting to happen! Besides, I’m more scared of Alger shouting at us for letting you go alone than I am of the demon! I can already see Commander Eyebrows' face now...”

Huh. That took balls to admit. And if his face was anything to go by, he’s surprised he said it, too.

“Ain’t gonna complain to free help,” You mutter. “Fine. But stay close, ya hear? Only body comin' back is that bastard's.”

The chase takes you into the Revolutionary War exhibit, and you enter just as a line of muskets falls over, accompanied by the sound of hasty steps. Grinning, you line up the shot, tracking a bit as you trace the wind currents before you pull the trigger.

Even as the curtains catch on fire, you managed to get a glancing hit. It’s still enough to get Baykok visible once again, this time through the flames that cover its emaciated form. And you don’t have to worry too much about the spread of fire. Jack Frost is quick to take care of that, snapping his fingers to coat the fabric in ice.

“Dance with the one ya brought to the party!” Your grin is downright ferocious as the two of you open fire on the demon.

>Earlier that day
> Throne Room of the Great Tree

“What have you done to them?! Adrian! Fitz! Victoria? Brady!”

“Do calm yourself down. You’re making a scene. It’s quite unbecoming of a man of the cloth.”

“It doesn’t matter if you’re royalty or not. You’re threatening Task Force Operatives. And my friends. Release them NOW, or else.”

“Put your gun down, priest. Your friends are unharmed. Rather, it you that requires releasing.”

“…what have you done to me?”

“I merely created an illusion and trapped you in it, to better facilitate a discussion that I desire to have. Again, lower your weapon. I am the master of this Domain. There is nothing you can do without my express permission. I can only be harmed if I wish to be harmed. And you can only summon your demons if I wish for them. Not that they would be your actual companions, but crude puppets and slips of your demons.”

“…you didn’t think to just let my friends leave the room before doing this?”

“Please. I am Titania, Queen of the Fairies. Saviors you may be, you are still in my realm, and will subject yourself to my whims.”

“And what whim would that be?”

“Are you obtuse? I merely wish to talk.”

“What would warrant…this? Why go so far to just have a talk with me? Does this have anything to do with my request?”

“No, it does not.”

“And why should I believe you?”

“It does not benefit me to deceive you.”

“Why’s that?”

“Again, I simply wish to talk. Specifically, concerning that little…incident that happened eleven years ago…I believe fire, death and an impalement was involved? It always is…”

“How do you-”

“Do think Lebanon to be the only place where faeries can go to and from as they wish? Fate would have it that a faerie ring just hidden the woods of that school. I did not expect the sole survivor to stand before me once again.”

“…were you the ones, then? The ones that…pulled me out…saved my life…”

“No. That was not our work. You can thank the forces of Heaven for intervening on your behalf.”

“…heaven?”

“I found it to be quite interesting, really. That after so many years of silence in the wake of the Cold War, they only came back to save your life. It was quite a shock, to be honest. I couldn’t help but show interest.”

"...divine intervention..."

"Yes. Count yourself lucky and 'blessed', that out of two billion followers who cry out for aid, you were the only one to have ever received an answer."

“…were there any others? Other…people…that you could’ve saved?”

“If you are talking about Nathan-”

“DON’T! Don’t…don’t say his name…”

“Ah...your greatest sin…are you still kicking yourself over what happened in that burning chapel?”

“…if you claim to have been there…watched what I had to to…then how could I not?”

“There is only one person to blame. The boy himself, and the errors that led him there.”

“I…I could have been a better friend! I could’ve…I could’ve…stepped in more…helped…in the worst of times…”

“Do you really believe that? Were you kind to him because you wanted to be his friend? Or were you merely doing the expected duty of your faith, going to the dejected and the helpless just so you could get a leg up towards heaven?”

“No, never! I…I did not pity him. I defended him not because it was the right thing to do. But because…because I…”

“Lying is one of your sins, is it not?”

“It is not a lie!”

“Mmmmm…is that what you tell yourself so that you can sleep easy at night-”

BANG!

“…you do realize that I’m going to punish you for that?”

“And I realize that you could’ve stopped it, but chose not to.”

“An astute observation. Very well. I retract the punishment for marring my royal visage.”

“It’s not that royal. I’ve seen paintings of the Madonna that have more regality than you. Pardon my offense, your majesty.”

“None taken. I don’t like being compared to stuffy prudes-”

“Watch what you say, your majesty. Contrary to popular belief, we are just as capable of retaliating when we’ve had enough.”

“And I say that you haven’t yet had enough. Considering the fact that you’re still reacting as if the events only happened under a month ago. Parts of you have moved on, but for you…”

“…don’t touch me.”

“How rude. When I was in Alger’s service, many considered it a privilege for I, Queen Titania, to touch them even only slightly.”

“And I consider it to be a violation. What are you even trying to look?”

“Your eyes. Your eyes are still the same as they were. Older, perhaps, and a little more tapered around the rougher edges…but little has changed. Stanley…in the end, you did not kill Nathan. You killed what his choices led him to become.”

“…do you enjoy this? Torturing people over pasts that they wish to stay buried? Pasts that they wish they could have prevented?”

“I will admit that in my husband’s absence to fight the corruption in Tanglebriar, I have found sadism to be quite the release…”

“Then pardon me for saying this, but your husband needs to return quickly to give a thorough and in-depth satisfaction of your urges. The sooner and more vigorous the better for us all, I would think. Not just for me, but for your civilians as well.”

“I thought priests were supposed to advocate celibacy.”

“Don’t play coy, your highness. I can dispense freely enough when giving advice to a dysfunctional couple. Human or otherwise.”

(cont.)
>>
“Dysfunctional? How are my husband and I dysfunctional?”
“I have seen those glances you level to us all. Not just to Adrian, but to the others as well. You are trying to tempt them into your bed.”

“Correction, Stanley: I am trying to tempt all of you into my bed.”

“And that isn’t going to work. I swore an oath to never lay with a woman even before I became a priest.”

“You’ve been doing a fantastic job in that regard. While I can smell the scents of many women, women who cling to your hands after a funeral, who clasp your hands, trembling as you administer forgiveness for their sins…I cannot smell the earthy scent of spent passion.”

“And you never will.”

“Good. Then it means that you’re still a viable match for the demon I have in mind to become your new partner.”

“…what?”

“I withheld a portion of the truth earlier. In truth, I do very wish to see what had become of that young man who had crawled out of that burning building, barely clinging to life as he clutched a bloody cross.”

“A lie by any other means.”

“Call it what you wish, it changes not that you have not only satisfied me, but proved yourself worthy of this demon’s companionship. The only question remains as to what you’re going to do with it in the days to come..”

“…”

“Don’t look so sour. It's quite a powerful ally to have. I’m going to release you from the domain. Do try to contain yourself and not cause a noticeable fuss.”

Yeah, I get what you mean. But Kaz is somewhat reliable. He'll show up eventually and we'll blow this fucking popsicle stand.

Just chill and pop on a podcast or something. That's what I'm doing.

By some miracle, you’ve managed to stabilize the men before they’ve bled out to death on the floor of the museum. And in no small part in thanks to Angel and High Pixie. Now you know that while healing magic doesn’t fix blood loss, it at least rearranges all of someone’s organs back together, so as long as they’re still there. All you really had to do was hold the intestines as they pulled themselves back into their respective owner’s body.

It’s quite fascinating, really. But if Victoria’s second trip to the trash can to vomit is any indication, it’s something that’s going to be exclusive to you, and no one else in the squad.
What you couldn’t fix, however, is their missing livers. God knows what’s happened to them, either devoured by Baykok or stored somewhere else for future consumption. Both thoughts are equally grizzly, but these guys aren’t out of the woods yet.

To put it bluntly, they’re going to die within a matter of a few days if they don’t get a transplant. Losing the purification of blood and cleansing of deadly toxins from the body isn’t something that one could easily recover from. Within hours, the build-up would be too much for them to handle, and their bodily functions would begin to shut down, one by one…a slow and painful death.

“DAMMIT!” It surprises you as much as it does Victoria when you punch the ground as hard as you can. Both wood and knuckles crack upon impact, and you pull back your stinging fist. “Fuck!”

The mechanic grimaces, wobbly sauntering over towards you, hesitantly placing a hand on your shoulder. “…I’m sorry…” She offers, handing you an antiseptic.

You take it without saying anything, stripping off latex gloves and cleansing your hands of any leftover offal. “I know…I wasn’t expecting healing magic to be the answer to all our problems but…” You gesture helplessly towards the security guards, who stir fitfully in a magically induced slumber. “…and I get that there’s some things that even a medical student can’t fix…”

“You did the best you could given the circumstances,” She counters softly. “Better than anyone else.”

Your demons are quick to join her. “She’s right, master,” High Pixie quietly says, gently patting your shoulder. “You saved their lives.”

“Agreed,” Angel intones, the tips of her wings caressing you in a warm embrace. “Without your intervention, they would have undoubtedly perished. But you have given them more time to fight and cling onto their lives, increased their chances for survival. A noble deed all on it’s own.”

…you accept all of this quietly, nodding as you pack up the bloodied tools and equipment back into the first aid kit. This, you hand to Victoria, motioning for her to run to the car. When she returns, the orange kit is absent in her hands, replaced by her own gun and the presence of her own demons.

Your eye flash dangerously as you stand up, checking the magazine of your carbine before you slam it back into place. “We’re gonna make that son of a bitch pay for what he’s done,” You say, sliding back the receiver to set a round in the chamber. It isn’t a threat. It’s a promise. “We’re gonna make him regret coming out of that damn book.”

But it seems that a complication has entered into the plan, taking form in the voice of a young woman.

“Professor?” Lisa’s voice is easily recognized as it comes up the stairs of the museum. Everyone’s eyes go wide, both demons and their Summoners, as the girl’s footsteps draw ever-closer to the door. “Professor, are you there? The festival is about to start. Everyone’s waiting so you can fire ‘the shot heard round the world’ and kick off a proper fourth of July…”

“Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!” Gremlin whispers, frantically bouncing around in a panic. “What are we to do, master? What are we to do? She’ll see, she’ll see, she’ll see this bloody mess, and scream and tell everyone within the town!”

From behind the blindfold, you can see Angel’s brow bend into a frown. “We cannot afford to waste anymore time, master. Every second we linger gives the Filth more time to escape, to flee from justice.”

You gesture to Vic with a quiet motion. Less than twenty seconds before Lisa makes it into the room. “How good is your CQC?”

She blinks at that. “Moderately adequate. Nowhere near as good as Fitz’s though.”

You nod. “That’s more than enough for me. You have the Mnemosyne program in your COMP, right? I need you to apprehend Lisa before she makes a scene and erase her memory. Doesn’t need to be too far back, just about ten, twenty minutes or so.”

“What?!” She hisses back, eyes blazing. “Where are you going?”

Jerking your head in the direction Brady and Fitz went, you answer: “I’m going after Baykok. Your demons won’t do as good against him as mine are. I’ve got more kick, and that little shit of a demon Salamander’s in my COMP. Vic, I’m not asking. It’s an order.”

“I know, I know! It’s just…well…it’s kinda surreal,” She admits. “I mean, the poor girl isn’t going to stand a chance. I didn’t spend as much time with Fitz as you have on the sparring pad, but I still picked up a few moves from her. And if push comes to shove, I can use Gremlin to zap her. Low frequency though.”

You cast a withering glare in her direction before sighing. “Hmmmm…let’s hope those moves of yours work. Here she comes. Good luck.”

With that exchange out of the way, you sprint towards the exit, and Angel and High Pixie follow hot on your six. You don’t even clear the second room before you hear the beginning of a scream, and a noisy OOMPH as someone’s body hits the floor. Struggling ensues, accompanied by the raucous cheer of Victoria’s demons as they successfully manage to restrain the receptionist.

Sorry about that, you blanch at the image your mind conjured up, a terrified Lisa left to the ministrations of Victoria Yamane, looming over her with a grin too wide to be healthy and twitching fingers. I’ll try to make it up to you when everything’s all over.

Perhaps a nice fruit basket would do?

Digressing from that, it seems that the trail takes you around the first floor and up the stairs of the building. And in your path comes a trail of carnage. Shattered glass, torn bits of paper fluttering in the air, and more than enough bullet holes in the walls to put a block of cheese to shame. Oh…boy. That’s definitely going into someone’s paycheck.

Central let you know that Alger wasn't in D.C., but you can already imagine him getting the news. You have a bad premonition when you tell him about you and MacKay receiving rewards from Queen Titania. But this shit right here? This is gonna be an even bigger paycheck than what you had to do in Delaware. Heads are gonna roll by the time everything’s over, and it ain't gonna be pretty.

For a moment, the silence is enough to set your teeth on edge as you make it up to the second floor. The last thirty minutes or so could be described as “Okay Coral” simulator from the amount of bullets and spells exchanged between demons and Summoners. Up here, though? Nothing but the sound of glass crunching underneath your feet, the dry hum of the air conditioning…

It doesn’t last. Just as you’re about to call out for their names, a tremendous BOOM shakes the building. For a moment, you thought it was Fitz or Brady tossing a grenade, but no, it isn’t. Looking out a window yields the sight of a bunch of men, cheering as a test fire of a cannon goes off. Phew. Close call.

A thought suddenly comes to you. If you can time your gunfire with the sound of the historical reenactment, then maybe-

“There he is! Open fire!”

Brady’s voice coming from the Civil War exhibit quickly dashes that idea into splinters, and the sound of gunfire echoes along the old wood. Sighing in resignation, you grip your carbine tight and sneak your way up to the side entrance of the exhibit, carefully peering your head through the opening.

Baykok is less than two meters from your position, and you’ve got a straight line of sight right to the skeletal bastard. He’s too busy to notice you, hissing and chattering as he conjures ice javelin after ice javelin, throwing them at the impromptu cover Brady and Fitz are crouched behind.

You’ve got a wide open shot. And what was it that Brady said? “Light and Fire”…

Pyro Jack comes to mind, his icon on your COMP signaling that he’s ready to come out and fight. But that means changing your current team, swapping out either High Pixie or Angel. And both come with their own special skills and advantages…

Angel seems to be displeased that she won’t be able to use her magic against Baykok, but she accepts your deferral, vanishing back into the COMP without complain. Pyro Jack is quick to take her place, quietly dropping alongside you as you prepare for an ambush.

“Alright,” You whisper, flicking the safety of your carbine from off to full auto. “Here’s the plan. Are you familiar with the phrase ‘no kill like overkill’?”

They nod, taking up positions next to you. Magic swirls to life in their hands, demonic power manifesting as spells, devastating power to aid or hinder, defend and attack…

While they don’t seem to hit as hard as Fitz’s fire rounds, you can’t deny that they were nothing short of causing signifigant damage to the demon. Baykok only has a moment to twitch in confusion, turning towards you as the first bullet crashes into his skull. Then, he howls, the ice shards around his body dissolving into puddles of water as he clutches his face in pain. More bullets slam into him, the rest of your salvo and the additional fire of Brady and Fitz, who unload everything they’ve got as fast as they can.

And your demons aren’t slouching either. You can feel the power of High Pixie’s buff channeling strength, toughness and agility into your body, every move you make accentuated by a bright sheen of magic. From Pyro Jack’s lantern, a gout of flame erupts from the candle, completely enveloping Baykok in a fiery embrace.

>Baykok is seriously injured!

The demon loses control. Panicking and flailing, it screeches incoherently, desperately trying to beat the flames that eat at its body. “NO, NO, NO! SUMMONERS OF THIS ERA ARE TOO POWERFUL! TOO STRONG!” It wails, emaciated hands trying to form ice, only to melt under the intensity of the heat. “NOT STRONG ENOUGH…NEED MORE…WARRIOR SPIRITS…WARRIOR’S MEAT…CONTAINER…VESSEL…MUST FLEE TO THE VESSEL!”

Without any concern for the oncoming attacks, it breaks cover, charging past you and the others in a dead sprint towards the stairs. It crashes into a nearby water dispenser, slicing open the container with wicked talons, sighing in relief as the water douses the flames.

“Oh, no you don’t!” Fitz roars, vaulting over the table and leveling her shotgun. “You’re not gettin’ away!”

She empties the rest of the clip, eyes flickering around the walls where the demon jumps from one corner to the next. Too late, and the demon disappears once more, this time leaving wet footprints that run along the walls.

Even as Brady directs Jack to douse the flames, Fitz turns around to greet you with a casual salute and wry grin. “Took ya long enough to get your ass up here. They gonna be alright?” Something on your face must’ve given something away, because she flinches. “Aw…shit. Adrian…I’m…”

“Twenty four hours,” You softly intone, leaning against a wall that’s relatively devoid of bullet holes. “They have twenty four hours to live without their livers. If they don’t get treatment immediately, they’re going to die by the end of tomorrow afternoon.”

She’s silent at that, something for which you’re immensely grateful. And once Brady’s finished putting out the fires, you patiently wait for them to reload their weapons. You exchange information, giving them the details of your medical report and Lisa’s untimely entrance.

Hey Kaz does Hama hurt humans in your quest? I know it doesn't in certain games.
>>
>>881927
Yes. It does. But the "kill" chance only applies to demons, DemiKids or individuals that have digested a Magatama weak to Light. Vanilla humans are otherwise knocked the fuck out if the Hama/Mudo spell chance activation is successful.

“Well, if it’s any consolation, we got the wanker pretty good,” Brady exhales, casting a belligerent eye towards the stairs. “And he hasn’t made it easy. Damn thing came too close for comfort a few times.” He points to a spot on his armor, the Kevlar sheared right through and the plate underneath it scratched. “Damn thing tried to gut me.”

Fitz grunts as she slides her gun back onto her shoulder. “It only tried to do that after we whittled him down some more. Seems like liver’s not only his favorite, but somethin’ like a drug or healin’ item for him.”

That would make sense. Animal livers on their own are rich in protein, not to mention other vitamins and minerals beneficial to the growth and repair of one’s body. But you quickly stop yourself on that tangent before you get sidetracked, shaking your head out of analyst mode.

“One more floor,” You mutter, “And then he’s got nowhere else to-”

A piercing scream cuts you off, reverberating down from the upper level with enough force to make all of you reel back. It is the pain of a wounded animal, the sound of someone who has been subjected to a horrific amount of pain. It is the voice of a man, the original playful alto, now a keening wail of agony.

“Lisa came in here…” Brady says, slowly going pale with every passing second, “…who did she say she was looking for again?”

Professor Capretta!

>The Bell Tower

The door to the highest level, the bell tower, had been torn off from its hinges. The three of you deftly jump over the debris, nimbly dodging crumbling brickwork and mortar as you ascend higher into the building, higher into the darkness.

The attic itself is musty, the air choked with the dust of unknown ages past. It’s a struggle to breathe, not to mention see through the darker parts of the attic. Light from rafters breaks through cracks in the windows, through wooden shades that slant outwards into the city. But it’s nowhere near enough to completely light the stifling environment.

Fitz takes point, and you again follow suit, with Brady bringing up the rear as you advance into the attic. Relics of American history greet your arrival. Paintings of battles, of presidents and governors stare as you round corners and hug angles. A blacksmith’s forge sits in a corner, its tools long since tarnished or rusted from the embrace of time. There is something from every period of American history in here, things that had not made the cut to be put on display downstairs.

The attic itself is small, no bigger than three by three meters at the most, and there’s barely enough space to move. But there’s some kind of clearing in the center of the room, just right underneath the bell and the ladder one would use to climb up to ring it. And it is that clearing that you find Professor Jack Capretta.

He is a far cry from the man you met the other day, and not only in the costume that he’s wearing. Blood cakes the corners of his mouth and teeth, dripping down his chin and staining the pristine cloth of his uniform a deep red. The powdered wig is bedraggled, hanging off of him in wild clumps and awkward angles. And there is no part of his clothing that is not dyed a crimson hue in some way, shape or form.

But the most telling of all are his eyes, eyes that flicker red at odd, random intervals.

The professor’s hand is impaled upon a bayonet, one that has been hammered into a bent shape with a crude hammer. He is trapped there, and nothing short of tearing through his own limb or bending the metal back into a straight line would allow him to go free.

He has done it to himself, you realize, taking a sharp breath with the others as they come to that same conclusion. The demon wouldn’t do something like that, not when there were Devil Summoners hot on its trail. And…Baykok said…vessel?

…shit. Demonic possession doesn’t need to be willing. Not every victim is an asshole who lost control over their powers when they got too headstrong. No, there are some victims that are just everyday individuals, the common men and women of the world.

“SUMMONERS,” Baykok hisses through the professor’s lips, the sound not matching up with the movements of his mouth, “POWERFUL FOR THIS ERA…STRONG FOR BAYKOK. NOT TO LAST, THOUGH. AS SOON AS TEAR MYSELF FREE-”

You don’t know what he plans to do. Without any warning, Capretta’s body spasms, contorting violently as if he were having a seizure. The hand in the bayonet makes a wet noise as the wound grows bigger, and the metal widens the gap between his hand. You almost panic, rushing forward to administer healing, but Fitz holds you back.

“The fuck if I’m about to let you go into that,” She mutters, gun still level at the professor.

Eventually, the convulsions stop, and the professor simply lies there, catatonic an unresponsive. Then, consciousness slowly returns to him, and he’s able to lift his head high enough to make you out past eyes almost swollen shut.

“You…” His voice is a reedy little whisper, bubbling past bloody froth and saliva as he struggles to sit up. His eyes flicker towards your guns, then back at your faces with astonishment on his face. “The university…students who came…how…?”

(cont.)
>>
holy fuck
>>
“Does it matter?” You cut him off before he can continue. “What matters is that we’re here to help.”

He repeats your words, slurring past a line of drool and a deadening of the lip as it goes numb and unresponsive. “Help…help…”
But then he is quick to regain his coherency, shuddering as his eyes briefly flash red. You all step back, weapons and demons ready to cast magic. But a desperate cry from Capretta compels you to stand your ground, to motion for everyone to lower their weapons.

“Please…kill me…” The professor croaks, pressing his hand further into the iron spike. A mangled scream manages to tear out from his throat, but his eyes remain a determined brown, bloodshot and weary in spite of the pain. “He’s too…strong…can’t…hold him back…don’t want…I don’t…want to hurt…hurt anyone…anymore…”

Tears leak out of his injured eyes, trailing down the crusted blood and dried bodily fluids that stain his face and hands. His eyes are pleading, the sight enough to make Brady recoil and Fitz tense where she stands.

"...please..."

...after a long silence, Fitz breaks it, grimly taking her pistol to aim straight at the professor's head. "...if you ain't gonna do it, then I will," Fitz offers. "It'll be quick, with no pain. No need for you to get your hands dirty."

Brady shakes his head. "No, don't do that! There has to be another way, some kind of...some kind of...alternative method! Baykok has to get out of Capretta's body. Bloody problem is that I have no idea what that curtails...dunno if even Christian exorcism works..."

Their eyes turn towards you, leader of Carina Squad.

>+2 to Light
>+2 to Chaos

If it was someone on the team, you’d do your damnednest to get the demon out of them. And with that in mind, you already know what you have to do.

“Brady, get HQ on the line,” You order, the tone of command entering your voice. It brokers no questions, no second-guessing. “Fitz, keep an eye on Capretta. MacKay’s not here, but we’re gonna do our damnednest to try and force the demon outta the professor.”

>Brady approves +4
>Fitz approves +2
\

They both nod, quickly going to their respective tasks. Within a few seconds, Brady has HQ on the line and Fitz keeps her gun trained on a moaning Capretta. You, on the other hand, have a different job to take care of.

You quietly thank High Pixie for her effort, giving her a tired smile before you send her back into the COMP. Pyro Jack takes her place, and you give him a brief appraisal of the situation at large. You ask for his input, for anything that might help since he’s smart. He doesn’t preen as much as he bobs in the air, nodding as he begins to puzzle out a solution.

“Did you catch all of that, you lizard?” You softly whisper, bringing up Salamander’s icon on your COMP. “I know for a fact how much you want to kill this damn thing, seeing as it’s humiliated you and your comrades for the last three hundred years or so. But I’m going to be blunt. If I even see as much of a spark go towards the professor, I’m going to have Brady sic Jack Frost on your blue ass, sealing power or not. Do you understand? We’re not killing Baykok while he’s possessing the professor.”

You pause, letting the words sink in before you depress the button. The demon in question appears in a flash of light, tongue flickering and eyes burning as they stare at Capretta. If looks could kill, then the professor would be dead many times over.

“What did I say?” You growl.

It gets the message, quickly backing off into a more defensive position. “…why have you summoned me, human?” It demands, settling down on the floor like a dog. “…I thought we had a deal. I was to cooperate in stopping the demon. This is highly counter-productive.”

Angel glares at the elemental. “Father MacKay is not here, which means that he cannot be given Last Rites or any final sacraments. It would be nothing short of an affront to the Kingdom of Heaven if this man were to tie with a demon’s taint inside of him.”

In any other situation, you might’ve laughed at Angel’s poor choice of words. But not now. Not while someone’s life hangs in the balance.

But Monkey was always the good one for me. Walter was a motherfucker I wanted to strangle and Johnathan was a little meh, but not a damn idiot making everyone Smirk.

Which reminds me. We need to Smirk more often, demons find that scary.

I never found Isabeau to be helpful for anything other than moral support, and I don't remember a single battle with Johnathan were he helped before i finished the fight.

You pick up right where Angel left off. “I know what you mean by ‘stopping the demon’. And like I said. When and only when we get the bastard out of the professor’s body.”

The Salamander hisses angrily before backing down, settling into an irritated seat by the windowsill. “Very well…”
Brady taps your shoulder, presenting his COMP when you turn around to face him. “I got someone on the line. He wants us to link up our comms so everyone hears.”

You and Fitz nod, quickly priming your own devices and presenting them to the hacker. They whir and hum, and an audible CLICK resonates through the attic as the connection is established between all three of you.

“Who am I speaking to?” You ask.

“Squad Leader Brown, is that you?” The gruff voice is familiar, and you match it to that of Agent Goodwin, the analyst who helped you the day prior. “I believe that you ordered your man to make a call.”

“Yes, I did. And I assume he’s told you of the problem?”

“Specialist Brady has indeed informed me of the gravity of the situation. If I understand correctly, we have a possession victim, attacked by a Native American demon, am I not correct?”

Your eyes flick towards Capretta, curled up into a ball as silent sobs rack his frame. “That’s correct. We have him contained right now, but I don’t know how long it’s gonna last.”

Goodwin’s voice is incredulous. “Contained? How?”

“…would you believe me if I said a bayonet?” You mutter, taking a good, long look at the spike the professor impaled his hand on. “It’s either that or the professor’s willpower that’s keeping the demon from taking over.”

“I see…is it alright if I…” Goodwin’s voice trails off as he addresses someone else. Whatever he’s told, it doesn’t seem to sit well with him, and the tone his follow-up is indicative of that. “Brown, I’m not going to lie to you. Right now, your case is being prioritized in our analyst room, displayed on the jumbotron, and I have no less than two administrators breathing down my neck.”

That in itself is enough to make your heart leap up into your throat. Brady pales and Fitz's eyes widen as you somehow manage to reply. “…I’m sorry?”

Goodwin whets his lips before speaking, “The demon known as Baykok…is an entity that is not formally registered in our Compendium. Its existence was theorized as it has been mentioned in myths, but never confirmed. Right now, you're going up against a demon that's unknown in terms of strength and power as far as intelligence goes. Our superiors are very...concerned about how this will all play itself out. Especially considering the..." He hesitates, stewing for the right word before eventually settling. "...mitigating circumstances of its awakening."

...they aren't...they aren't blaming you for Baykok's reawakening, are they?

“Hey, asshole,” Fitz snarls, beating you to the punch of a reply before you can even make a rebuttal. “I don’t give a rat’s ass about whose toes we’re steppin’ on or pissin’ off. Tell us how to tear the damn sunvabitch out of Capretta before we’re forced to off him! We don’t know when he’s gonna lose control and let the demon ride him around!”

For a moment, there’s just silence, a moment of brevity that just sinks into everyone, humans and demons alike. Brady just looks like the bloke who just got his pink slip handed to him in the male, while your demons stare in undisguised shock. Everyone’s jaw has dropped open to varying degrees, yourself included at the sheer temerity of her statement.

Still…the mental note asking her to dial it down a few notches remains to be made.

Eventually, Goodwin manages to regain control of the conversation, if only a small and marginal amount of it. And the tone of his voice is that of one who has been severely chastised.

“R-right,” the analyst coughs, only managing to dispel half of the awkward air that clouds the conversation. “I don’t need to tell you that the situation is more complicated than what you’d expect from a normal possession. But it’s as Specialist Fitzgerald suggests. Right now, everyone at Central is more concerned with putting a stop to Baykok’s reign of terror before things get any worse.”

“Glad to hear it,” The policewoman mutters. “So how the fuck are we supposed to deal with it?”

“It is a malevolent representation of death for the Ojibwe. And unfortunately, its…removal from Professor Capretta is theorized to call for the employment of a shaman of the Ojibwe or any of the Anishiaabe tribes. The Task Force does employ Devil Summoners who have undergone the rites and rituals to become Medicine Men, but we cannot rush any of them to you, as they are all on missions of their own-”

You can almost hear the sound of her patience shattering. “Get to the damn pith of the argument before we hang up and try rain dancin’," She snarls. "At least that’d be more useful than just listenin’ to you run your jaw like a yappin’ lapdog.”

Goodwin chokes on his own words, severely enough that another voice chimes in onto the discussion, a stern and definteily more feminine voice than Goodwin’s baritone. “We know that tensions are high, Specialist Fitzgerald-”

“Nah, really? Ya think so?” She snaps back. “Because we’ve only got a homicidal, cannibalistic, liver-eatin’ demon on our asses. So do your damn job and help us!”

As much as you’re admiring the stones on her, you have very little desire to piss off the brass just to make a point. You hesitantly extend a hand to her, waving for her to stand down as you direct a pointed look at her. Fitz puffs up indignantly before deflating, exhaling as she reigns her temper under control.

She doesn’t offer an apology as much as a wry expression, to which you direct a small grin. Fitz blinks in surprise before returning it, matching your approval with a smirk of her own. Damned if you didn’t find her display no small amount of awesome.

Unlike your previous informant, this new voice doesn’t waste time, and quickly cuts to the chase. “…where is Specialist MacKay? Your roster lists him as a practicing member of the clergy. If we cannot bring a Medicine Man, then you should just jump straight to Christian rites. We have a copy of Pope Leo the Thirteenth’s prayer ready to transmit to him.”

…shit.

“MacKay is…indisposed,” You mutter. “He isn’t with us at the moment, and repeated contacts to reach him have failed.”

“‘Indisposed?’” The voice repeats in an indignant deadpan. “Where the hell is he then?”

“…a long story that we don’t have the time for. Besides, why can’t we just read it?”

“The prayer can only be said by a priest…although…we do have an alternate solution. It’s a gamble, but it’s worth a shot…what’s that, sir?” Silence on the other end of the comm once more before the voice comes back. “We’ve just got authorization to use it since it’s an emergency. You’ve got an Angel on your team, right?”

Everyone’s eyes turn to the heavenly servant in question, who somehow manages to give off the impression of blinking in spite of her blindfold. “Me?” She intones in surprise.

“Yeah, we do. What of her?”

“...she should be capable of casting Expel-type magic, or Light as it’s commonly referred as. Cast on a normal human, all it does is knock them out. But even the think tank isn’t sure about what might happen if we cast it on someone possessed by a demon, Christian or not. And while we run the risk of accidentally killing Capretta-”

“Wait, what?” you cut in, quickly overriding the voice. “What’s this about killing Capretta? We’re trying to save him, not put him in the line of fire!”

(cont.)
>>
The voice answers with a tone of steel. “We’re trying to stop Baykok. And the only way you’ve got a clear shot at attacking him is when he’s out of his host body! Light magic is lethal to demons, and it might just be able to get him out of there. But since the professor’s body is tainted with the demon’s presence…it may kill him.”

...so it's come to this. The struggle between helping civilians and duty to the organization. You knew this day would come, but not this close...

“…she’s right,” Pyro Jack says, looking up from his meditations with a grim look on its face. It gestures to Angel, and then towards Capretta. “The pain will be intense, perhaps enough to force the demon out of its host body. And you had already damaged it earlier. It will then try to flee, and we can attempt to destroy it when it does.

"I believe there are prayers for exorcism that do not require an ordination to pray. The Messiah is believed to have said that anyone can attempt to drive out demons in His name so as long as they have faith.”

“I don’t like it…” You clench your fist hard enough to make your knuckles pop. “I don’t like this one bit. But we’ve got no other option. We’ll do it.”

Everyone takes a point around Capretta, forming a triangle with the position of the humans. A prerecorded prayer is set to broadcast from your speakers, and you three are to be the congregation and responsorial. High above, Angel floats just underneath the bell, observing the preparations with a critical gaze.

“Master, are you ready?”

You nod, thumb over the PLAY button and eyes focused tight on the notes. Gesturing to Fitz to keep her gun trained on Capretta, you mouth the question to the others. Brady looks like he’s about to collapse on his feet, but he’s still determined to see this through to the end. Your demons await outside the triangle, anxious and spells at the ready if something were to go wrong.

Good. “We are ready,” You reply to your demon, and hit the button on your COMP.

“…Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle…” the pre-recorded voice of a reverend intones from the speakers. Capretta jerks at the words, limbs twitching and eyes flickering, the prayer to Saint Michael quickly filling the attic. His eyes flash red, but only for the briefest of instants, not long enough to grab the bayonet or tear his hand out of the spike.

“It will be painful,” Angel warns. “Extremely painful. And I cannot say what will come of it. Your mind may shatter under the sheer agony you will experience. This is a spell meant for cleansing demons from the world, not exorcising them from human beings.”

The professor looks up to her, eyes bloodshot, and answers, slurring over his words due to a bloodied lip. “…so as long…as I don’t…hurt anyone…I welcome…anything…”

There’s something admirable to be found in that. Noble and stupid, perhaps, but admirable nonetheless.

“Then should you perish, you will have died a hero in the eyes of heaven.”

His eyes close in resignation. “…that is…more than enough…for an old…man like me…”

Angel’s mouth opens, and what comes out of her mouth is no language you have ever heard. It is an old language, one whose syllables are impossible to repeat let alone describe or put to voice. But it is melodious, flowing like a gentle stream as it fills the room, reverberating along artifacts and the walls of the bell tower.

This is not a prayer.

It is a song of glory to the Creator above all, He Who Is and Shall Be Forever More, the Master of the Universe. All shall bow before Him and acknowledge His might and power.

Then, as she finishes the last word, she brings her hands down, creating a triangle with her fingers. A targeting solution, one that has Capretta right in its center. But he doesn’t seem to care. He actually leans forward, fully intent on exposing himself to the ball of light that comes to life in Angel’s hands.

“Be cleansed from the Filth of the world,” She intones solemnly, before activating her spell. “And be purified in holy light.”

And the screaming begins when the first pillar of light bathed the possessed man in a searing radiance, blinding you all with the sheer brightness of the attack. Though you cannot see, you can still smell the acrid scent of clothes and hair burning, the foul odor of Corruption and the scent of cooked meat.

And just when the light dies, and Baykok's howls have joined the professor's in a disjointed duet of suffering and agony, Angel casts her spell again. Once more filling the room with light again...and again...and again...and again...

>60, 58, 29, 55, 1

Even before it ends, you know that something has gone horrifically wrong. Call it a hunch, call it a gut feeling, and call it the sensation of someone dancing on your grave. It’s that kind of sensation that causes unabated terror and dread to form in the pit of your stomach. It is that kind of feeling that drives all rationale and reason from your mind.

“Stop!” You cry out, desperately breaking in the middle of a prayer to gesture wildly to Angel. “Stop, stop it now! Angel, stop!”

But by the time she stops, already firing her tenth beam of Light even as she registers your words, it is too late. And she knows it as well, hands coming to her mouth in a universal gesture of horror. As demons and men run towards the center of the triangle, desperately reaching for healing spells and first aid, the result of your exorcism is laid bare.

He’s still alive only in the barest of terms. Doctor Capretta’s body is riddled with burn marks, the worst of them fusing cloth and flesh together in some twisted amalgamation. His mouth and eyes are open wide in horror, bloodshot and bloody, and what comes out of his throat is little more than a pitiful, half-strangled gasp for air.

“Oh, fuck…fuck…fuck…” You’re not sure who’s saying that. It could easily be you or Fitz as you lay panicking hands on the professor, desperately trying to find a patch of skin that has escaped the searing of the Light. It isn’t Brady. He’s too busy stuttering into the comm, desperate for instructions on how to proceed. “Shit…shit…healing magic…he needs healing magic…”

What the hurts the most is that you might’ve saved him. Really, you could have. If you’d just been a second sooner with High Pixie, or if you’d kept the first aid kit with you…or if MacKay was here to give a proper exorcism…you might have saved him.

But it is too late. History has repeated itself once again, the roles of Mad Henry and Joseph Putnam filled in, and the demon behind it all once more reprises its roll.

Capretta throws his head back, screaming in agony as his eyes flare red. Smoke pours out of every orifice on his face, a black gas that leaks, billows and froths at the whims of an unnatural wind. In that smoke, you can make out the visage of a leering skull, the pained cries of Baykok as he tears himself away from his ruined vessel. The words he says are unintelligible, babbles in the Ojibwe tongue as the last tendrils of his essence pull out of the professor.

As soon as the last trace of smoke has exited his body, the curator collapses back onto the floor. Wounds that you’d never even seen open up, bones breaking into unnatural positions and blood leaking onto the bell tower’s floor. Your magic cannot keep up with the rate of the injuries that break out across his body. How did he injure himself? Baykok’s exit caused them to reopen…what happened to him before you came?

(cont.)
>>
You do not have any time to dwell on it. The demonic smoke shrieks, not even attempting to mouth something intelligent before it makes a mad rush towards the boarded windows. Splinters fly and the sun pours into the opening as the demon, uncaring that the light begins to dissolve itself, escapes from the museum. Where it goes is anyone’s guess, but you know for certain what it has left behind.

In a bell tower, located in a quiet town in Kentucky, on a day of joyous celebration and solidarity as Americans, three members of Squad Carina and their demons desperately try to save the life of a dying man. All of it, healing magic and mundane means, to no avail.

And as you watch the last spark of life fade from Professor Capretta’s eyes, the mission comes to a close.

You have stopped Baykok’s reign of terror, driven away the blight that plagued the townspeople of Lebanon. It will never return to devour the organs of men, never again perform unspeakable acts of horror upon innocent lives and souls.

It is, by the book, in spite of one small bit of collateral damage, a successful mission.

Congratulations.

Five minutes before three o’clock in the afternoon, the bell to the American Historical Society Museum tolls. Its sound reverberates across rooftops, over hills and gentle plains lined with festivity and family. Everyone turns back into the town to look, battle combatants and audience staring in confusion at the sound. It would not be so unusual for the bell to ring, it was meant to do that upon the hour at every hour.

What is strange is that it refuses to stop ringing.
And as the beginning of doubt begins to appear on the townsfolk’s faces, something unusual happens. A cloud of smoke trails out from the city, a distant wisp that breaks across the sky like a snake through clear water. But it does not last.

It wobbles uncertainly, almost punch-drunk as its flight changes from a sure course to an erratic path. Confused murmurs turn to worried mutterings as the trail of smoke seems to be making its way towards the center of the field, right in the middle of the battle reenactment.

Children shout in glee and excitement, screaming as they are pulled away from their parents before the strange object crashes into the ground. A cloud of dust and dirt is kicked up into the air, briefly obscuring the site of the crash as the smoke settles.

And from the crater, a “monster” emerges.

It is too soon for Halloween, someone thinks to themselves. Especially with that costume. But one has to admit the effort that went into it.

Others gasp. Isn’t that, like, really offensive? Oh my God, that headdress is racist and cultural appropriation from the Indians. I need to post this…

It’s a prank, some argue. An unscheduled prank by someone in cahoots with Doctor Capretta.

They think it is a show. They think the actors have outdone themselves this year. But even the actors know that this is not a part of the program. A surprise by Doctor Capretta, perhaps? Nonetheless, they are getting paid to entertain the townspeople of Lebanon. And what is acting save to be able to slide into a role, to easily improvise and adapt to something you’re not prepared for at all?

The “monster” shambles about the battlefield, flailing comically and lunging wildly with no coordination whatsoever. Its “attacks” are easy to dodge, easily battered away with the butt of a rifle, slapped back with a foam tomahawk. Everyone laughs, cheering as the skeleton howls in frustration, unable to land a single blow on any of the combatants. As one, Redcloats, Injuns and Colonials circle the opponent, uncertain of how to proceed from this point.

Someone tries to stage-whisper, to inquire as to what to do. All the answer he receives is a harsh chattering of teeth against bone, a nasty sound of grinding that scrapes in the depths of their ears.

“So this is the true enemy behind it all.”

The monster turns, and everyone along with him. Standing atop the hill, right next to the cannons, a man on a horse gazes down with a baleful expression. No, not a man, not a horse. That is Daniel Boone, hero of the Battle of Blue Licks, clad in furs and wielding a musket, riding on a steed befitting his legend.

The audience cheers at the sight, and eventually the actors do as well. At least, the ones in colonial regalia, but even they aren’t spared from the confusion. James wasn’t supposed to come out that early, the thought runs through their minds.

And as they draw closer, further away from the backdrop of the sun, everyone gasps, even the monster. All for different reasons.

To the skeleton, it is a paradox. Unlike its other kin who strut with a coat of shining white, this one has a mane of soot and ash, and skin the color of gradual twilight. It’s eyes blaze, a prideful beast sure of itself and where it stands among the animal kingdom. Every step forward oozes power, tight and controlled, compact and ready to strike at a moment’s notice.

At least, that is what the monster pays attention to. Instead, what the civilians and soldiers alike pay attention to is the horn that juts out from the beasts head, a spiral length easily two feet long. In the shadows, it is dull and barely noticeable. But out of the shade, it is radiant, capturing the warmth and beauty of the sun upon its fine edge.

Boone sits bareback atop the beast, but shows no signs of discomfort. With a single motion, he nudges his mount’s flank with his boots, grabbing onto its mane with a singular word, a shout, a command, a name: “Bastiel!”

The unicorn rears back, voicing a fierce battle cry into the air, shaking everyone down to the cores of their being. Then, it plants its hooves on the ground, charging down the hill at a thunderous pace before anyone has a chance to recover.

The audience goes wild, little girls cheering in excitement for the first time in as many years. And the actors themselves scatter, parting like the Red Sea before Moses as Daniel Boone catches the wind and rides the unicorn towards the “monster”. And as people pull out their phones to record this surprising event, some would swear that they saw light, beautiful and blinding, gathering at the tip of the unicorn’s horn.

Not that they would remember. Boone raised his wrist, some bit of metal gauntlet shining in the light. The image of a woman clutching a marble bowl would be the last thing before the darkness took them, before the ten minutes of memory was stolen from their minds.

But for Baykok, Ujibwe spirit of death and malevolence, flesh-eater and demon of the ancient world, the last thing it would feel was the horn imbued with the power of Light impaling it upon its length, burning it from the inside out. And as its bones crumbled into dust, as the darkness pulled at its vision, it only had one last glimpse of Daniel Boone, and the white collar of a holy man around his neck.

So...yeah. Mission two comes to an end, and with it, the end of the "Lost and Found" arc. Epilogue thread next session. And now, I suppose we could do Q&A as long as the thread is still on the board and doesn't fall off.

Be straight with me. I need to know. Did Titania purposely stall Mackay? Or was it just other reasons?

I don't trust fae. But I want to know if she's the particular fae responsible.
>>
>>885750
Bittersweet but sometimes you critfail.

Thanks for running all week.
>>

I have to keep some secrets, anon, for the sake of plot twists and turns. An unfortunately, this is going to be one of them. Sorry.

>>885753
Aye. It isn't an SMT game unless someone dies early in the game.

Goddammit, Kaz, you mysterious motherfucker. You're lucky you write an amazing story otherwise I'd never forgive you.

Also, I'm getting a Dresden Files kinda feel to this quest, I dunno how to explain it. Where you pulling inspiration from? You know. Besides SMT. I'm curious.
>>

Supernatural
>>
>>885750
Damn Mackay, when did he set all this up?

....was this Titania's doing? MacKay would have gone straight to them rather than follow along with the dressup.

Right. "Supernatural" is the one (before it went to shit) in terms of doing things case by case, and a few other minor things. "X-Files", too, in that regard as well. The prototype for Adrian's narration style comes as a mix between Dean's dry wit and Sam's "nice guy" attitude.

Other things..."Dresden Files" for the fairy/demon interactions. And in hindsight, I can see why you think of it, aside from fairy shenanigans. Murph and Fitz are blonde policewomen who don't take shit from anyone. Except that Fitz is taller and has more of a temper problem than Murphy.

"Magic Ex Libris", "Men in Black", "Alpha Protocol" (severely underrated game) and "XCOM:EW" for how the organization is structured and how its Summoners operate. "Red Dead Redemption" for the Annette arcs and "Metro 2023" for atmospheric stuff and future plans down the road.

And that's all I can think of right now. I'm sure more's gonna come to mind after I sleep.

EXCUSE ME, GOOD SIR

so nuclear element making a comeback?
>>
>>885769
Solid list and makes sense why I'm having a blast, since I love all that shit.

It's not our fault, but we did fail to save the guy. Did any of our team members take a hit to the friendo points?

IIRC, nuclear skills are Persona-only skills. It'd be an import, not a return, especially since second-best girl uses them.

>>885772
I'm saving that for the next session. It's gonna be great. I've got my notes and everything prepared.

Goddammit, why you gotta post Makoto? I don't even wanna think about P5 right now. I just want Atlus to fucking release it already so they can get to work on the Etrian Odyssey V localization.

I'm waiting and waiting, but time is getting longer and my will is getting weaker.

I can't see any reason why they would.

Holy fuck, stop liking what I like, I want some distance so I can hate you when you hurt us by making everything fall apart.

Also,

You're having fun the wrong way.

Are you going to wrap up this mission ending soon and do set up for next and/or R&R soon?
>>
>>885878
"Epilogue" thread, which then leads into the next mission. With definitely some R&R. You've earned it, especially after a mission like this one.
>>
>>885949

So are we sneaking into hot springs and failing miserably and getting caught as is the typical Persona way? Or are we doing something different?
>>
>>885978
I think drinking is the only way we can deal after this.
>>
>>885949
When will this be?
>>
>>885978
>>885985
That's probably not gonna happen until the Japan arc. And given how the town's gonna react to finding two security guards and Capretta dead...Lebanon ain't gonna be festive any longer. Besides, there's still Moh's side quest you can take care of. Grave robbin' with only one teammate. Maybe it'll give someone something to do aside from moping around in a stew of emotions.

As for thread date, probably next week. BRQ is this weekend as per usual.

>>885979
This anon has it right, at least for Brady. Maybe Victoria, too.
>>
>>885979
It better be for the right reasons. Trying to drink sorrows away is bad for the team. Instead we should honor Capretta's memory and toast to his bravery and will that kept the demon contained until his death.

Don't dwell on the failure (RNG) but don't try to forget it either. Learn from it and strive to do better (don't roll a 1). I think we need get that in our team's heads before they get too depressed.
>>
>>881684
Wait did everyone just forget they were Devil Summoners and didn't use demons at all? Where the fuck did Fitz's demons go?

Alright I'm going to be real here. This boss fight felt like a cutscene and was a bit too railroady for my liking. Baykok's escape to Capretta could easily have been prevented if everyone actually used their demons and if we could have told Victoria to go with the chasing team cause all she was doing was standing around throwing up otherwise.

Had we had full control Baykok would have been Sukunda'd to hell and back and we would have been Sukukaja'd. Not only that Lham and Hairy Jack would be right at its heels the whole way through. You aren't getting away with all that. We had it outnumbered, encircled, and outgunned but we didn't utilize any of it.

I understand you were trying to go fast for the sake of time and wanted the end confrontation for the sake of drama but don't gimp us to get to it. Or if you have to gimp us make up some reason instead of people conveniently forgetting they can do things.

Done ranting, but man this was so easily preventable even with MacKay and Adrian busy.
>>
>>886046
Duly noted, good points across the board. I'll definitely keep this for consideration for future arcs. And yeah, you're right. I did need to end it, just because I didn't want to drag it out too long. For demons...I'll definitely keep that it mind.
