If there's anything you know now about Costa Rica, it's that it's supremely hot. Everyone was shedding their Tankery jackets and electing to either roll up the sleeves of their undershirts, or just opt for tank tops. “Alright. So we're all clear on the plan then?” asks Griselda. You all have gathered around for a light breakfast before the match. Under the nasty hot weather, you all nod and say yes to Griselda. “Remember, it's really hot today! So everyone stay hydrated. I don't want my tanks to suddenly stop doing anything because you all get heat stroke and dry up like raisins.”

Serafina groans. “Augh... I hate the equator!”

“Judging by how hot it is,” says Serina as she opts to tie up the bottom of her tank top to expose more skin to the sun. “The equator hates you too, Serafina.”

“How long is this match going to take!?” yells Dalia. “It's hot in Florida, but this is just hellfire!”

“I haven't been this hot since Burning Man!” shouts Jane.

“Aw, you guys are a bunch of slackjawed faggots!” Regina stands up, proudly wearing nothing except the orange Rescue swimsuit, her Tankery jacket, and the skirt. “Weather like this will make women out of all of you! If you can't take the heat, get outta the kitchen!” She picks up a bucket of water, and immediately splashes it all over herself. The droplets glisten in the sunlight as she douses herself with cool water to the amazement of everybody.

Even you have to admit that looks cool.

Griselda stands there awkwardly, then shrugs. “Okay, everyone's dismissed then.” You all stand up, grumbling more about the heat and humidity.

“Augh... I should've brought my swimsuit.” Winona tilts left to right as she sits at the table. “It's so hot...” She slowly lowers her head onto the table, then yelps. “AAAHH!” She flinches back, holding her cheek. “THAT'S HOT! HOT!”

Stack has kicked her legs up, looking at everyone. She apparently doesn't mind the heat. “I don't know why y'all are so beat up about the heat. There are worse things in life.”

“Yeah.” Ingrid surprisingly is also kind of receptive to the heat. “You should watch a Texas Rangers game at their home stadium in the middle of August. You could cook a three course meal on those seats.”
Winona looks around. “Where's Josephina?” You turn your heads to see Josephina cowering from the sun beneath an umbrella, desperately drinking water and keeping herself cool by the cooler.

Josephina looks at you all. “I'm not used to this.”

Remember folks. Do not be like the rest of the cast and underestimate them. This is the Brazillian team in what is essentially their home court. I expect lots of ambushes and a renewed spirit.

NATO are a bunch of cheeky mother fuckers with their random draws.

You and Winona sigh deeply as you fill up some canteens at a fresh water tank set out for spectators and the like. You're going to need at least twenty. Winona will find some space for all of it hopefully, you need to be with Griselda later to meet with Da Silva and her crews. Winona immediately takes a swig out of one of the canteens. “Make sure you keep that one.”

“Why?” she asks.

“Germs, nobody wants to drink out of a canteen you just drank out of,” you explain. She holds it out to you, smirking. “Get off.” You gently slap it away. She giggles, taking another drink out of it before filling it up again.

“Hey, hey, hey, girls!” You turn around. Oh. It's the boys. Great. Jack Cochran, Jeep Jockey, and few more of his cronies. “You need some help with the water there?”

“We're fine,” you explain. “Right, Win-”

Winona smiles at you, already having a couple of boys fill canteens for her. You glare at her. “What? They're offering to help!” You roll your eyes. Winona, gives ground far too much and too easily.

“What are you guys doing here anyway?” you ask.

“What? Can't we cheer our favorite girls on in person?” asks Jack as he cranes his neck around to see a couple of the CMDR girls walk by. They wear brown shorts shorts below white tank tops and khaki jackets, along with uniform thigh highs between all of them. “I mean, I would say that CMDR is very uh... well-built.”

“Eyes here,” you say. Him and Jeep Jockey look back to you. “Look, thank you for coming to cheer us on and helping fill the water for us. But please don't sexually harass anybody.”

“Please!” Jack wraps his arm around Jeep Jockey. “I'm a goddamn sexual tyrannosaurus! And I guess Jeep Jockey here is like uh... Machimosaurus!”

“A what?” he asks.

“It's a prehistoric crocodilian,” you explain. “Whatever. Just don't get into any trouble.”

“Fine, fine. Good luck, okay?” he says. “From the bottom of my heart.” He nudges Jeep Jockey. Jeep Jockey glances over. “Go on.” Jeep Jockey sighs, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. “Hey, don't be a pussy, go on.”

“What?” you ask. Winona looks over, curious. You seriously don't have time for this.

Jeep Jockey sighs, holding up a box. “Here.” You take it. It's a little tinbox it seems. You open it up and inside are quite a few yellow packages of... gum? “It's Beemans Gum. A lot of us pilots like to chew it for good luck. We decided to buy you some when we last hit port, you can't really find this stuff much anymore, you gotta buy them in bulk.”

“Oh.” Winona takes a bit out, smiling. “Thanks!”

“Yeah, thanks, I guess.” You nod to Jeep Jockey.

Jack nudges Jeep Jockey. “His idea.”

“Just-” He pushes Jack away, glaring at him. He looks back at you. “Just uh... good luck, okay?”

You give him a very brief gentle smile, then nod. “Thank you, Jock. It's appreciated.” You take a packet of gum for yourself. And to that, he smiles as well, looking down at the ground, shoving his hands in his pockets.

“Well, you two oughta get together again sometime next week, eh? Maybe Ellie can help our little Jockey get some confidence!” Jack shakes Jeep Jockey around, stunning him and confusing him. “Alright, well, we'll get out of your hair, alright, Ellie? Tell Griselda I said hi.” You decide not to mention that Griselda did not appreciate getting bombed with paint last time, especially last time. Let him figure it out himself you suppose. “Later!”

“See you,” says Jeep Jockey. The boys wave goodbye, quickly setting up the filled up canteens into a bucket for you and Winona to carry.

“Ah... boys.” Winona smiles wistfully as they walk away. “How come you don't have a boyfriend?”

“Because-” You stop yourself. “Because boys are stupid and I don't have time for romantic... stuff.”

“You have no idea how to be romantic, do you?” Winona asks smugly as she slowly rubs her cheek against yours. You push her away, glaring at her. “Haha! Ellie, you're such a cutie! I swear!” She hefts up the bucket for you. “Come on, let's go.”

Hmph. You know how to be romantic. It's not THAT hard. You just have to kiss and do... romantic stuff!

“Oooh, gum!” Stack swipes up some of the Beemans gum and starts popping the sticks in her mouth. “Mmm, tastes like honey!”

“Lemme have some.” Ingrid as well takes some gum and pops it into her mouth. “Mmm. Not bad.” The two of them chew on the gum, then grab some more sticks.

“Hey!” you say. “Don't just pop more in!”

“But I wanna blow a bubble!” says Stack.

“Two sticks max!” you say. You huff. It's just gum. Why are you feeling so protective of it? You hold it close to your chest. It's not like this gum is anything special or anything. Eugh. “Where's Josephina?”

“Oh, she opened the hatches in the back of the Cromwell for a bit of improvised A/C,” says Stack. “Now she's running it on idle.” You look over to Oliver as it vibrates in place, smoke coming from the exhaust. The four of you walk up to the driver's hatch and find her wearing sunglasses, a hood over helmet, and stripped down to shorts and a tank top. She still looks like she's sweating in there. “How ya doin', Big Unit?”

“Bien,” she says. “But I despise this heat. It feels like I'm melting.”

“The woes of Canada,” says Ingrid.

“Oui, exactly,” says Josephina. She looks at the tin box that you carry. “Oh, is that gum?” She takes a stick for herself, then starts chewing on it.

“Hey, Ellie!” Serafina walks up to you. “I wanted to ask for some advice on- Is that gum?” She reaches in. You hold it away. “Hey!”

Suvorov, Patton, Clausewitz, and Giap pop up from behind the turret. “I smell gum!” says Patton. “What communist dicksuck isn't sharing their gum!?”

“Did someone say gum?” says Dalia. “Gum is good for keeping the stomach calm when things get churning!”

“One stick per person and that's it!” you yell. Everyone on the team immediately crowds around to grab some gum. “Hey, hey! Watch it!” You see packets get torn up, sticks of gum be consumed in serveral instants.

“Ah!” Jane coughs a bit. “Uh oh. I think I swallowed my gum.”

“HAAA!” Regina comes to the rescue and quickly punches Jane in the gut. Jane coughs, doubling over, before setting her jaw. “Is it out?”

Jane nods slowly. “... yep. Thank you,” she croaks.

“This gum's pretty good!” says Serafina.

“Yeah,” says Serina. “Ain't half bad.” Come on, guys!

Finally, they all disperse.

And all that's left is one packet just for you. Ugh, vultures. You look up however to see Griselda and Iris chewing on the gum. Iris nods slowly. “They are right, this is a very sweet gum. Though, I would not recommend chewing it during a fight, you may accidentally swallow it. A lady does not swallow gum.”

“Of course,” says Griselda. “Where'd you get this gum?”

“Eh, Jeep Jockey gave it to me.” Griselda smirks, quirking her brow. “What? What!?”

“Nothing.” Griselda snickers a little. “Come on. We better get to the stage.” With that, you tell Stack to run a last minute check on the tank, then leave with Griselda and Iris.

“How is Maria, have you met her yet?” You ask. The Maria you refer to is Maria Da Silva. She commands CMDR's NATO Tankery team. She's that spicy latina girl in the photos that you saw when you were briefed. Very attractive girl.

“I did last night,” says Iris. “When we were settling accomodations. She's very uh... listen, try not to take offense. But she has very little tact when it comes to things. She genuinely means well.”

“How bad could it get?” asks Griselda.

-

-

“Aha!” Maria Da Silva towers over all of you. Not as tall as Josephina, but still definitely tall and definitely busty as well. She eschews the khaki jacket in favor of a black tank top and a red armband on her left arm. “So this is the lovely little sister, Griselda, and her two lovely assistants! Iris, it's good to see you again, your tea was very sweet! And Elodie, such a body on you! Oooh!”

You squint a bit at Iris. She shrugs in response.

Griselda and Maria shake hands. “It's nice to meet you, Maria. Let's have a good match.”

“We shall! We'll give you a fight for sure! Especially for the student of the famous Gertrude Pool!”

“... excuse me?” Griselda's eye twitches a bit.

“Your older sister Gertrude taught you everything about Tankery, did she not?” asks Maria. Griselda slowly shakes her head. “Oh, my bad, I am so sorry!”

“It's it's okay,” Griselda mutters. “It's fine. Just- whatever...”

Maria frowns for a second, then smiles at you and at Iris. “Let us have a good match, yes?”

“We shall,” you declare. “Good luck out there, Maria.”

“And good luck to you three as well.” Maria bows to you three, and you do the same. “Me and my girls shall not let you down.”

The Judges separate you three. “The match between Lafayette Girls Academy and Candido Mariano Da Silva Rondon University shall begin!” The crowd cheers, exploding with hype. “This is an elimination match. You look over the map one more time as you observe surrounding landscape. Trees, trees as far as the eye can see. Lots of clearings in the forest as well. This is CMDR's hometurf that's for sure. And you will not let this discourage you or lure you into a false sense of despair. You'll win today, you know it. “Alright, everyone, we all know the plan?” you ask.

“Got it!” says everyone.

And with that, the flare shoots up. The match has begun.

“Jane.” Griselda calls over the radio. “Take point. Ellie, mobile element as usual, take Dalia this time, scout around our flanks.”

You stand turned out, leaning on the turret roof as you sidle your way through the woods. The Jagdtiger crushes fallen trees and brush beneath its tracks. Thankfully the ground today isn't too soft otherwise that big tank might sink into the ground here. You keep eyes to the south side open, with Dalia trailing behind with eyes to direct south, with you southeast. “Anybody see anything?” asks Griselda.

“Nada,” says Dalia.

“Nope,” you say.

“Alright. Keep alert-” You hear a loud banging sound.

“What was that?” you ask.

“Carver!” yells Griselda. “Don't touch that-” You hear another loud crashing noise. “Augh!”

“Sorry, sorry... I uh... I might've accidentally stopped the tank,” says Carver. “I'll just not do anything here.”

“You put her in as a co-driver?” asks Serina.

“I thought she could keep Luisa company!” Griselda explains.

You roll your eyes.

After what feels like half an hour of traveling through trees. You reach the clearing near the center of the map. You look out to the sky. Dust clouds, but very thin in their direction. They could be anywhere. Damn it. “Ellie, Iris, report.”

“We're fine,” says Iris. “Moving along nicely now.”

If it makes you feel better, the TKS's 20mm can only pen about 35mm of flat armour at 100m and it drops off pretty quick, while the Solothurn in the L3/35s can only do 40mm at the same range, and is down to 35mm at 300m, again against flat plates.

“I say we keep moving. Those tankettes aren't sure to beat us to wherever we're going. And hopefully we can surprise them by bashing ourselves through the woods.”

“Right,” says Griselda. “Let's stick together. We get caught in the open, we're deadmeat.”

Your tanks move on through the clearing. As this happens, you take a moment to reflect on where the enemy might be. Considering the fact that there are dust clouds from their side of the field, they have moved. But considering the wideness of the cloud, they aren't moving in close formation. They might in fact be moving around your flanks.

If it comes to a situation where you're surrounded, things could get really ugly.

The Jagdtiger moves up to the next batch of trees. It rams its way through, playing some 80s song over its loudspeaker.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hq3Q3FfJkK4

“Jane, why are you playing music?” asks Griselda.

“Morale purposes,” Jane explains.

“We might be giving our position away though!” yells Serina.

“Yeah, several heavy tanks trying to be stealthy.” Suvorov seems a little pessimistic about that. The Jagdtiger continues trying to ram through the trees, slowing the entire column down for now.

“Ellie.” Griselda calls to you. “See anything?”

“Nope,” you say.

Iris says, “Maybe we should seek an alternate route. We're being slowed by the trees. This could be giving them time to surround us.”

> Iris is right. Try and find a way around the trees.

“Iris is right, Griselda. I think we need to find a way around these trees so we can get moving.”

“Agreed. Alright uh...” You consult the map again. “Get the heavies on the road. I'll follow behind. Ellie, Dalia, split up north and south and screen us. If you see anything moving, you tell us, okay?”

“Got it,” says Dalia. “I'll head north.” You see Dalia's Hellcat move away from behind and go northbound. “Take south, Ellie. We'll cover these goons like sauce on spaghetti!”

The Jagdtiger takes a minute or two to reverse out of the woods, then starts moving down onto the road. As obvious as the road is, it's at least a fast way to move through these woods. For now, you have to consider that speed is of the upmost important. And momentum may just save you when it comes to blows. An ambush against CMDR is no longer a threat, it's an inevitability.

You and Dalia stay off the roads, taking some distance to screen against any incoming threats. You scan the woods, looking around.

Suddenly, you see some shifting leaves and trees to the south. “I got movement!” you say. “Something's out there!”

Griselda asks, “Anything, Dalia?”

“Nah,” says Dalia. You continue to observe. Nothing moves again in that direction. Maybe it was just the wind? Wait, there's no wind today. It had to have been a tankette of some kind.

We do, White Phosphorus smoke is for all intents and purposes an incendiary round, but it's unlikely whatever we spotted is still in that given position anyway. Firing first will only give away our own position and make us an easy target.

“Josephina, left a little please.” She angles Oliver to the left, not fully towards the movement, but allowing you to creep slightly closer. “Stack. Light flares.”

She pops out of the loaders hatch, then fire the bomb thrower. The shot shoots up into the sky, then explodes a bright light over the woods. You grab your binoculars, taking a look at the movement. Hm... “What's the hold up, Ellie?” Griselda sounds a bit concerned.

“Nothing,” you say. “I thought I saw something.” You could've sworn...

Wait. You squint a little through the binoculars. You see something moving. It's a girl! She's wearing a camo tarp over her body and leaves wrapped around her helmet. She stands up, then looks directly at you. “Contact!” You drop the binoculars, and wheel the .50 around. You start spraying the woods. The column halts, surprised by your sudden attack.

“I got contact north too! Lots of them!” yells Dalia. You see the woods start to move as your rounds start peppering the brush. It's not just one tankette. It's two, no three!

Holy hell, it's got to be at least eight of them! But you can't tell their shape from the brush!

Suddenly, you hear a loud bang in the distance. “What was that!?” yells Serina. Suddenly, the column is enveloped in smoke. “GAH! I CAN'T SEE!” The Bison! It must have launched a smoke shell on you!

“What's going on!?” yells Serafina. “Where are they!? Let me at them!”

“I can't see, I can't see!” yells Jane.

“Everyone calm down!” yells Griselda. “Calm down!”

“They're advancing, I'm sure of it!” yells Dalia.

Tell Gris to keep the column moving forward along the road, no matter what, ironically if they stay collected the Bison's smoke will be more blessing than curse, CMDR won't realise what we're doing until we break the smoke. As for us, we should push to rejoin the column at flank speed, Dalia should too. Hold our fire until we get clean shots at these tankettes, maybe fake them out by pretending the .50's jammed, once they close up to get at our weak points, light 'em up, point blank.

The main thing is the column doesn't stop or retreat, we need to preserve our momentum.

“We're immobilized!” yells Jane.

> MOBILITY KILL: JANE FOGERTY (Jagdtiger)

“Damn it!” The Pershing behind them stops them. Serafina yells at them. “Get going! We-” The IS-2 rams into the back of the Pershing. “Watch it!”

“What the hell is going on!?” Yells Regina. The Panzer III zooms around the build up, managing to breach out. You can't see where the Panzer IV, Griselda, or well... anyone besides you and Suvorov are. You keep spraying the woods.

“Load HE!” you command. Stack rams an HE shell down the breach. “Fire!”

The shot pierces through a tree, then explodes behind it. One of the L3/35s sails through the air from the explosion, disappearing into the smoke.

Determination is literally the only option. Staying or falling back means we lose. Leave the Jagdtiger, it's basically invulnerable to anything other than the Tetrarch, and if it keeps that occupied for another shot or two, then that's a win in my book anyway. Iris can lead the heavies out.

And tell everyone else to clear the fucking net. If it's not a report, can it. Griselda's at the back of the column, she needs to take control of the situation back there and get them moving.

Smoke also works both ways, if we can calm down and communicate it will obscure us from their fire as much as blind us to their positions.

Oliver bursts out of the smoke. You buckle forward in the commander's chair. You hear a loud grinding noise. “What the hell!?” screams Stack.

You pop up again, then look down. Oliver is crushing one of the tankettes underneath his treads. The other tankettes turn, then see an opportunity. They start firing their autocannons at your now exposed bottom armor. You hear loud banging and scraping noises. “AH!” yells Winona. “WHAT'S GOING ON!?”

You hear something burst behind you. “What was that!?”

Make a neutral turn, and rev the engine hard. Assuming one's wedged under each track, we should pop off the front of one, and when they think we're reversing and try to keep up they'll shoot past, leaving all our weight and torque on the other, which the track is trying to pull on. We'll probably slide off from the induced turn, and shear off it's gun mount and likely immobilise it in the process.

Then just pop the two other tankettes, .50 for the TKS and HE for the L3/35.

You communicate the plan to Josephina over the radio, and let the rest of the crew know what's going on. She starts a neutral turn on the two tankettes. With the loud revving engine, you slowly reverse off of one of the tankettes. It tries to keep up, but quickly shoots past from the momentum. The other is crushed outright from having to bear the weight alone, with its gun flattened and its suspension ruined as you pull off of it.

“Griselda, get that Bison, it must be close! We'll try and kill as many of them as we can!” you yell.

“Got it!” Griselda rolls forward. Iris follows behind along with Serina and Regina. “Follow us!” The tankettes burst out of the smoke again, TKSs, L3/35s, and the Panzer IIs.

“Start stacking shells!” The tank holds up for a second, then you quickly begin grabbing shells from the stowage racks and placing them into ready position. Stack as well starts to grab multiple shells for loading. “Winona, fire at everything! Fire at will!”

Your six pounder opens up on the nearest target. An L3/35. It goes flying from the shot, flipping onto its side. The two crewmembers go falling out, then hurry to try and right back over again. “Shit!” yells Winona. Stack loads in a new shell. Another shot. This time it finds a weak point, sending it flipping onto its top, with the crewmembers running for safety.

> KO: LUCILLE MAGDALENA (L3/35 cc “Bartolo”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: ELODIE R. ZUMWALT (Cromwell III “Oliver”)

Winona fires another round. This time it finds one of the Panzer II tanks as it tries to pursue the heavies.

> KO: YMIRA PILLA (Panzer II Ausf. L “Boy Wonder”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: ELODIE R. ZUMWALT (Cromwell III “Oliver”)

Another round. This shot flies against a TKS-NKM. It goes flipping end over end.

> KO: NANAKO UESAKA (TKS-NKM “Ganbare”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: ELODIE R. ZUMWALT (Cromwell III “Oliver”)

“We're doing good, we're doing good!” you say. Another round fires. The tankette it was meant for brakes, dodging it. “There, now!” Another shot. This time it flips onto its side, hit in the suspension.

> KO: SABINA “DOGGY” LOBO (L3/35 cc “Wolf”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: ELODIE R. ZUMWALT (Cromwell III “Oliver”)

You hear a loud bang from the engine, and suddenly black exhaust fumes come seeping into the tank. “What's that noise!?”

“Ah, it's the engine, it's starting to die on us!”

"Welp," says Jane. "I'll play us out."

“Shit, it's Maria!” yells Serina. The King Tiger and the IS-2 turn to face her as she comes in from behind. Her Tetrarch immediately charges right at them, suddenly swerves left around the IS-2. “Shit, crossfire!”

The IS-2's turret traverse is too slow.

> KO: REGINA TANEY (IS-2m “David”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: MARIA DA SILVA (Mk VII Tetrarch “Adios”)

The engine explodes again. “Fuck, fuck!” Stack is covered in black grease and oil. “I can't save the engine, we're going to lose her!”

Your intuition chooses now to kick in. Maria's making mincemeat of the heavies with her lighter and more agile tank. If it comes to it, she probably can and probably is trying to solo the remains of the team! Damn it!

Here comes the Hail Mary (if you'll pardon the pun), load HE, set time fuse to minimum delay, aim at the ground just short of her. It's an old British trick from North Africa to get more use out of 6-pounder HE against AT guns and the like. The round will skip up off the ground then an instant later, detonate mid-air, essentially jury-rigging an airburst round.

She might be able to dodge a shell, but she sure as shit can't dodge all the fragmentation from an airbursting round. The Tetrarch has 5mm of top armour, even with an applique kit, we'll turn her engine deck and turret roof into swiss damn cheese. If by some miracle she survives, pop the top and hose her down the with the .50 before we kick it, and keep the 6-pounder firing as long as we can.

“I got an idea! Stack, HE, minimum delay!” She nods, hurrying to set the time fuse. “Winona, aim just ahead of Maria!” The turret traverse around. Come on, come on. You pop out of the hatch and fire .50 caliber straight at the Tetrarch, to prod it to go where you want. It turns on a dime, coming to face you directly. There we go. “Fire!”

The shot skips across the ground, then bursts overhead over of the Tetrarch. The shrapnel digs into the top armor, and you see a black cloud of smoke burst from the engine. There! You keep on spraying the Tetrarch as it tries to swerve out of the way, but to no avail. It pops its top, swerving out of control. But not before sniping you as it dies.

You sigh, stepping out of the hatch. The other tankettes zoom past you now that you're no longer threat, straight at the heavies. Serina's heavy HE round pops one of the tankettes, sending it flying end over end.

> KO: EVA LATOS (L3/35 cc “Red Sauce”)

Winona climbs out of the hatch as well, sighing. “Well, we gave it our best shot.” The tankettes circle around the heavy tanks, defeating their turret traverses. Griselda blasts away with her .50, smashing one of the tankettes apart.

“Come on, Griselda!” you yell. “Hold what you got, let's go!”

“Yeah, get 'em, GrisGris!” screams Winona. “Wooo!”

The tankettes continue to weave in and around the formation of tanks. The Panzer II drifts around the Sherman, blasting a burst from its 20mm autocannon at the turret and forcing Griselda to turn down into her tank. The King Tiger turns it turret, trying to track the targets as they run around and about. Iris tracks the tankettes a bit more efficient, turning her tank on the spot when needed. She fires one shot, blasting one of the tankettes.

> KO: SIMONE RODRIGUES (TKS-NKM “Apple”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: IRIS BLACKBOURNE (Churchill IV “James”)

Yes, just a few more! Come on!

Suddenly, you hear another loud bang. This time shot impacts the King Tiger directly, blasting the engine to pieces and knocking the turret off balance. “We're hit!” yells Serina.

> KO: SERINA HILDEBRAND (Tiger II (P) “Cub”)
> KILL CREDITED TO: INEZ RIOS (Sturmpanzer II Bison “Allecto”)

Shit. Shit. Shit!

The Panzer II and the L3/35 continue to dance rings around the remaining tanks. Griselda pops out of her tank again, trying to get her .50 turned around to blast them, but again the Panzer II fires another burst. Iris reverses back, trying to get the gun turned around on the Panzer II. But the much more nimble Panzer II continues to dance around the Churchill's rear, using the big heavy as a shield against Griselda. “Griselda, just shoot! Forget about me!” yells Iris.

“I can't hit you! Just move out of the way!” yells Griselda. Griselda gets out of the turret, this time more intent on blasting the Panzer II again. The Panzer II again moves forward once more. “There, now-” The burst from the autocannon fires.

And Griselda falls out.

The tanks freeze in place, the judging devices quickly locking all tank functions.

Oh dear God no. You all jump out of the tank. “Griselda!” you scream. The Panzer II tank commander gasps in surprise, also hopping out. Ambulances quickly move in on sight to treat. Luisa and Yuno are already out of the tank, treating to Griselda. “Oh my God!” you yell. “Griselda, are you okay!?”

Griselda groans, holding her arm. “I'm fine, I'm fine!” she says. Luisa holds up a medkit, preparing to treat the arm. “Get away from me!” She pushes Luisa back.

“Griselda!” The Panzer II commander pushes past you. “I am so sorry! I- I was aiming for your turret, I didn't mean to hit you!”

“I'm fine! Fuck it!” She punches her injured arm, yelping in pain, trying to stay stiff. “Just- let's get back in our tanks and finish this, damn it!” The Judges arrive, hopping off their trucks. Griselda hurries to try and climb back into the tank, but cries out in pain and only manages to fall to the ground.

“Griselda!” The Chief Judge calls out to her. “Griselda, just stay put. We have a doctor coming.”

“I'm fine!” Griselda starts bursting into tears. “It's just a bruise! Just let me keep playing!”

“Griselda, please! You're hurt, we need to look at your arm!”

Griselda grits her teeth, growling. “I said... I'm fine!” she cries. She wipes some tears off her cheeks, clutching her left arm. “Just let me play for fucks sake, I can do it!” The doctors come over with a portable wheelchair.

“Griselda.” Iris steps up. “Get in the wheelchair. Please don't make this worse than it needs to be.”

Griselda can't even form words now, sobbing in both pain and utter devastation. The doctors help her into the wheelchair. She's quickly carted away to the Dodge WC ambulance truck. The Chief Judge turns to Griselda's crew. “Will you still play or will you forfeit? You must promote a tank commander if you wish to keep playing.”

Yuno nods. “Erm.” She turns to Carver, who awkwardly stands around. “Carver-san. Please take command.”

“Wh- what!? I don't-”

“Why can't I take command?” you ask.

The Judge tells you, “You're a commander of a knocked out tank. We don't allow that. Injury substitutions come from within the tank, not outside of it. That's just how things are done.”

“I've, I've never-...” Carver.

Luisa says, “She'll do it.”

“But-” Carver coughs, clearing her throat. “I don't-” You all look at her. “... okay, I will.”

The Chief Judge nods, checking her watch. “Let the match resume then. Crews of the KO'd tanks, please report to the emergency trucks to be evacuated. We will resume within five minutes.”

With that, you all very quietly watched the rest of the match from the trucks. With Carver now in command of Griselda's Sherman, you hoped that maybe, just maybe, things would go right for once. Maybe CMDR will let up since Griselda was injured, maybe Carver will prove her worth and show she can be an effective tank commander.

Once the match resumed. Carver in a panicking fit and unable to figure out what to do in the face of the tankettes was nearly immediately taken out by the Bison.

The tank commanders gather together to discuss Griselda as you walk to the ambulance. “This was our fault,” says Regina. “We didn't do enough. We should've had this one in the bag.”

“Well, who was the one saying we had this in the bag for over a week!?” yells Serina.

“Now, now,” says Iris. “Let's not start fighting. Griselda wouldn't want that. A lady does not shift the blame on others. This was as much my fault as it was everyone's today. Today, we let ourselves down, and we let Griselda down.”

“Iris is right,” you say. “Let's just apologize. And hope we can take it the next day. CMDR's a poor school, they won't be able to field a team like this tomorrow, we'll get them then.” Everyone shrugs and mutters in agreement. You arrive at the ambulance, where Griselda sits being treated by the Doctor. She stares at the ground, her face blank, her cheeks still wet with tears. “How is it?”

“Minor sprain,” says the Doctor. “Along with a nasty but relatively shallow cut. She'll need a week of recovery then she'll be fine. Try not to let her exert herself and make sure you keep ice on the bicep, that's where the sprain is. I'll grab a sling for her.” The doctor allows you some time for all of you to talk with Griselda when he leaves.

“Griselda.” You bite your lip. “We-” She holds up a hand, silencing you all.

“This was my fault, I'm sorry,” she says. “We'll get them tomorrow though.”

“Bullshit!” yells Serafina. “Come on, Griselda! This was on us for crying out loud!” Griselda looks at Serafina in surprise and shock. “We should've done more, we could've done more! And we didn't! Yell at us, spank us, punish us! Don't just mope and blame it on yourself! You do nothing but get us where we need to go, but it's up to us to do things around here! We underestimated CMDR, we thought we were going to steamroll them, but they almost steamrolled us! The only reason we didn't get bulldozed was because of Ellie and because you rallied us! And we still failed! Don't you get that!?”

You step up closer to Griselda and look back at the tank commanders. All of them are genuinely remorseful. “She's right you know.”

Griselda rubs her arm a little, feeling the bandage covering it up. “Yeah. She is.” Griselda motions Serafina closer, then looks her dead in the eye. “Serafina, thank you very much for saying all that, alright?” Serafina nods. “Strange, I... you're the last person I'd have expected that speech from.”

“I've learned a lot the past two months,” says Serafina.

“Yeah.” She looks over at Carver, who desperately tries not to look like she's on the verge of tears. Griselda's gaze however makes a few drops sneak out of her eyes. “Carver, I'm sorry that the responsibility got thrown at you. I should've tried a bit harder to prepare you for this.” She nods, unable to say much else. “And to you guys, thank you. All of you.” Griselda stands up. “You're right, but you're wrong as well. You guys are the best crews I can ask for. Don't beat yourselves up today, let's try and look to tomorrow.” Griselda looks to you, then wraps her good arm around and pulls you in for a hug. “Thank you, Ellie.”

“You're welcome.” Griselda sighs, resting her head on your shoulder.

“Griselda!” The tank commanders part to reveal just who arrived. Gertrude. “Griselda, are you okay!?” She rushes through everybody, her eyes filled with worry. “Oh my God, I-”

“Gertrude.” Griselda shakes her head. “Please, it's- it's not as bad as it looks.”

“Are you sure!?” Gertrude takes Griselda's arm, looking at it. “My God... oh. Dad's gonna flip his shit! Griselda, we-”

“It's fine...” She takes her arm back, rubbing it a bit. “Everyone, just give us a minute.” You nod, and motion the tank commanders to disperse.

You walk along with Iris as the sun begins to set on the day. “It's going to be hard tomorrow,” she says.

“A lady doesn't let difficulty faze her.” Iris nods at that, taking a sip of her tea. “Tomorrow, we should debrief, try and find out what went wrong, and try to fix it before the match.”

“Of course,” says Iris. “I suppose we should consider trying to find a replacement for Griselda then by tomorrow?”

You quirk your brow. “Can't Carver do it?”

“Honestly speaking, I have very little faith in Carver. She isn't a bad person, but she's too raw. We've thrown tank commanders into the role before with little training before. But they had people to rely on, to help them along during the process. All Carver has is Griselda's crew. They're not the most talkative bunch,” Iris explains. “I could perhaps allow one of my girls to take the role.”

“Let's talk about it tomorrow,” you say. “For now, let's just try and rest, okay?” Iris nods slowly, then takes another sip of tea and turns to leave. “And Iris.” She turns back. “It's always been hard. But it hasn't stopped us yet, okay?”

She smiles a little. “Of course. On then, Elodie.” She turns back around and leaves you.

You fold your arms, sighing deeply.

Please, God. For the love of all that's holy, let tomorrow be easier.

That's it for tonight's LGA2. Hopefully you'll get CMDR tomorrow. And I hope you all enjoyed regardless.

See you next time.

Highlights:

- LGA: Elodie R. Zumwalt narrowly escapes Wedge and Stick maneuver by four tankettes, earns three kills in the process.

- JWC: JWC deploys newly restored Ardeer Aggie prototype, which eliminates both Meryl Hoffmeister and a friendly light tank behind it in a single blast.

- SGC/ZES: Rosehip and Mei Xiang duel for twenty five minutes in urban cityscape. Duel ends with Mei blasting a nearby building and collapsing rubble onto Rosehip's Crusader tank, as the very last kill of the match with Mei as the sole survivor.

- RHMA: Dix Hauser earns fifteen kills in a single day, with ten kills in ten minutes earning the win against GWMA.

Still very sour about the result. But I suppose it was always going to be like this. Felt it ever since the series win last week.

Don't even want to know about JWC any more than the highlights. I know enough to know what the final week will bring. Unless Meryl pulls a miracle, of course.

Turning to happy things. I am sure Ellie is getting closer and closer. And at the very least, I imagine that she continues to gain a devout following. Still hope to meet a rather "normal" fan soon. Would be swell. Also hope she'll earn a nickname from her fans.

End of the day though, great thread GS. I am feeling the frustration, so you did good. Hope we can pull it off tomorrow.

Still feel the end was very overly dramatic and slightly poor in execution to put it politely, it was still a 'fun' game. thanks for the run.

Too bad Griselda didn't get back in the tank. That would have been a beast move.

That Ardeer is a casualty just waiting to happen. I can feel it in my bones.
