You are Kusajishi Riku, now one and whole instead of being divided between the body of a Captain and her two zanpakuto. The rogue scientist Inaba has been put to death at Yoruichi's hand after a desperate fight, and now your side finally has a brief chance to catch its collective breath as the remaining Captain-class reigai close ranks.

“This ain't good,” reigai-Gin muses, backing away from Starrk. “Tried to tell him pissin' people off like that was gonna get him killed but no Gin, you're just a copy I made, why should I listen to you... moron.”

“Yeah, kinda feels like he made a mistake giving us personalities,” reigai-Rangiku sighs in resignation. “I mean if what he really wanted was blind obedience he should've gotten a dog.”

“Or just made thirteen copies of Captain Komamura,” reigai-Gin jokes.

Suì Fēng's reigai looks like she's about to have an aneurysm. “If the two of you are quite done, we have something rather pressing to deal with here.”

“You're no fun,” Gin's copy grins. “Never were, ever since we were kids.”

“Ichimaru... you still are a kid. That's the problem.”

“So what's the plan?” Halibel asks, still looking haggard from the fight before you arrived. She must've taken one of her own Cascada in the face at close range before they realized how Inaba's ability worked... almost anyone else wouldn't have gotten up after that.

You simply shrug, and respond in the familiarly echoing voice you now possess. “Not my call, I have been largely uninvolved in judicial matters for decades. Yoruichi is the one who knows the applicable precedents.”

Yoruichi ponders the point for a moment before explaining exactly how many of the Seireitei's rather short list of laws have been broken. “Creating the reigai in the first place was Inaba's crime: they should never have existed, but here we all are. The Central 46 will likely seek to hold them to account for everything that happened afterwards.”

“Attacking a Captain and committing acts of terrorism are both potential capital offenses. The law regarding mod souls states clearly that we're supposed to destroy them. Then there's the old law about two shinigami sharing one zanpakuto, which may be applicable.”

“Surely it can't be that simple?” Starrk asks incredulously. “I mean damn, everything's punishable by death here? What about you two? What about us arrancar?”
>1/2
>>
>>846373
“You're thinking along the right lines,” Yoruichi nods softly in agreement. “Regardless of how they feel about it this Central 46 accidentally set three precedents: accepting me and Riku, acknowledging the validity of the alliances we made with you, and most importantly in dealing with Muramasa's rebellion.”

“Muramasa? I see.” Halibel seems to understand her meaning immediately: in allowing the zanpakuto spirits who caused such destruction and attacked their respective Captains not only to live but to return to their wielders without any punitive measures, the Central 46 probably gave up much of their right to hold the reigai Captains accountable. Both are intimately linked with active-duty Captains, both seem to have acted not entirely of their own will, and both are officially viewed by the Central 46 as constructs.

“In trying to claim that the reigai should be dealt with as criminals the Central 46 would first have to acknowledge them as people rather than equipment,” Yoruichi summarizes so that anyone not so accustomed to her line of thinking can keep up. “And that's where it gets messy enough that I can dispute their orders under my authority as the Onmitsukidō Executive.”

“In any event it means forfeiting your zanpakuto,” you observe calmly, “since those are likely to become a sticking point. As for what happens after that... I cannot say for sure.”

We could make the same case here along the lines Riku handed to the Valhallan project. Though I reckon depowering would definitely be one of the topics that will be broached. Doubt it would be appealing to the more aggressive reigai personalities (looking at you clone Kenny).

We should also prep for memory wipe being on the table.

“The three of you will be held for the time being,” you sigh, motioning Halibel and Starrk forward towards Gin and Rangiku. “I would of course prefer that you cooperate, the last thing I would want would be to have to fight you even after... what is that?”

You, along with everyone around you, glance down Inaba's beheaded body as it crumbles away into dust. Gin shrugs. “He was a reigai, of course. Didn't you realize it?”

“A reigai controlling reigai...” Yoruichi muses. “The plot thickens.”

Kneeling next to the pile of dust you retrieve the red soul pill that contains Inaba's conscience and pocket it. “As I was saying, please try and tolerate it for the time being. Yoruichi and I will try...”

For the second time you're interrupted, this time by Suì Fēng turning and bolting with a flash step. Gin's reigai raises his eyebrow as you give chase, quickly overtaking Suì Fēng before she realizes it. She glances over her shoulder only to run headlong into you.

“How did you...”

“That was very rude, Little Bee,” you scold the reigai, grabbing her by her shoulder and bringing her right back to where you both started off. “Here I am ready to try my best to save your neck and you go and do something like that? Luckily for you I have grown too tired to hold it against you, so this time you get a free pass.”

“Welcome back, Suì Fēng,” Yoruichi smirks confidently. “Did you have fun?”

“Lady Yoruichi,” the reigai grumbles, “please do not taunt me! You know as well as I do that the Central 46 will not tolerate our existence, so please, at very least do me the kindness of allowing me to die in the manner I choose!”

“And you should know as well as I do,” Yoruichi counters immediately, “that's not the way I taught you. What happened to not looking for glory in death, hm?”

“She has a point, you know,” Gin adds, having handed off his sword to Starrk. “This isn't settled yet. Not by a long shot.”

“In a moment,” you insist, turning to catch up with Halibel and Starrk.

“Would the two of you appreciate some help healing?” you ask them. “It seems that Inaba's abilities caught you off guard.”

Halibel glances down at her cracked armor and bruised skin. “I would not say no.”

“I've got a bad knot in my shoulder, right about here?” Starrk jokes, pointing at his back with his thumb.

“That is a hole,” you observe the wound. “It goes clean through.”

“Hole, knot, same difference really.”

You let loose an exasperated, echoing sigh. “I will take care of it.”

It takes a few minutes to heal each of the two arrancar, the hole in Starrk's shoulder needs closing up and there are deep slashes across his side and arm while Halibel looks as though she has been run through a hydraulic press. Almost her entire body requires healing to some degree, so you're obliged to spend several minutes sealing up the cracks in the bony plates which cover her resurreccion form and stopping whatever internal bleeding you find.

Eventually, once they're both in solid shape, it comes time to start sealing zanpakuto. Starrk asks that you turn around as he separates Lilynette from himself: at first you wonder if he's trying to be mysterious about it, but from the sound of it the problem is more one of awkwardness.

“No, no!” Lilynette protests, “don't drag me out by my leg, asshole! Just... just turn around, okay? No, turn to your left. No, your other left!”

“I only have one left!” Starrk grumbles mutinously.

Meanwhile the white armored segments that cover several parts of Tia's skin light up in glowing amber, then seem to retreat into her arm-blade. Then the blade itself reverts to its sealed form, and she tucks it away into its sheath with a flourish.

As for your own release form's end it's mostly just a feeling you get, neither good nor bad. It's almost like a pressure has been relieved, but at the same time it leaves you with a baffling sense of emptiness. Mostly though it leaves you feeling tired from the whole experience.

“Are you okay?” Tia asks, no doubt noticing that you swayed briefly on your feet.

You nod, too stubborn to even consider the possibility that you need to rest. “I'm fine, thanks. Just make sure those three are locked down tight for the time being."

"Of course."

With that taken care of you return to your daughter. Rangiku's been resting quietly nearby through the whole encounter, and offers a little smile when you come for her.

“Told that asshole you were gonna be pissed,” she tells you, “but he wouldn't listen. Good to see you got through alright.”

“Yeah, I've been through worse,” you grunt, lifting her off the ground and making a silent dash for your quarters. “And from the feel of it, Kisuke's the one who got hit the hardest. It was his own clone that did it.”

“Man that's one fight I'm glad I was nowhere near,” Rangiku laughs. “I wonder how he eventually pulled it off?”

“Knowing him it was some creepy, fucked-up technique,” you reply with a wry grin. “Always has one waiting for any scenario, that guy.”

You carry her upstairs and set her down on the couch with her head up, while Tenri rushes off to fetch tea for the two of you. After a few minutes there's a knock at the door, and you wave Tatsuki in. Seems that the battle woke her up, which comes as no surprise.

“So no Rukia?” you ask, making no attempt to hide your amusement. “Honestly, she's the more sensible of the two.”

“How so?” Tatsuki demands.

“If I survived then clearly there's no problem,” you explain, sipping your tea. “No need for alarm.”

Tatsuki frowns. “You're too easy-going, you know that? If I'm going to fight at this sort of level I need to know the details about what's happening!”

“And you will hear about the details,” you assure her, “tomorrow. When we've all had a chance to sleep.”

“Like I could sleep right now!” Tatsuki shoots back.

“I meant I need sleep,” you sigh. “Come on now, I'm not a machine.”

It's then that Yoruichi finally returns, dragging along what's left of Kisuke with his arm thrown over her shoulders. The man's a mess... cleaned up a little obviously, as your wife wouldn't want blood trailed all through what amounts to her own home as well, but covered in burns and deep lacerations. In fact it almost looks as if he's been literally stitched back together.

“Tenri,” you order quietly, “please fetch a spare futon for Captain Urahara. Yoruichi, did you find it?”

Your wife nods, handing you the little red marble that confirms the Kisuke before you is the real one. Tatsuki stares at him in shock.

“I thought Sandal Hat was supposed to be some kinda mad genius?” she asks, as if she can't quite believe what she's seeing. “How'd he get that badly messed up?”

“His enemy was a mad genius too,” Yoruichi frowns as she takes a seat at the table next to your cushion. After helping Tenri set up the futon you join her.

“The laceration on his left wrist seems like it goes all the way through,” you observe, and Tatsuki covers her mouth as she realizes what that means. “Large parts of his torso seem like they got the same treatment. What the hell did this, Yoruichi?”

“It was his own Bankai,” she tells you sternly. “I've only seen it used one time, and then it wasn't a living being. But from what I could tell it can restructure objects. So he can reattach his own limbs, split incoming attacks, that sort of thing. You should see the other guy.”

“How bad?”

Yoruichi's frown deepens. “What was left didn't even look human anymore. Had to pry out the red pill myself... all these years and that doofus still keeps leaving me messes to clean up.”

“Can't you heal him?” Rangiku asks, glancing down at the Captain on the floor. “Or is his own tampering a problem?”

“I don't think I can help,” you admit openly. “He basically stitched himself back together already. It's just a matter of waiting for the process he started to finish.”

“If the one I killed was a reigai,” you muse, “I wonder where the original was?”

“Good question,” Rangiku sighs. “I'm sure Senna would like to know too.”

At the mention of that familiar name, Tatsuki perks up a little. “Oh yeah, where was it you took her to again?”

“A separate dimension,” your daughter explains with a self-satisfied smirk. “I remember a hundred years ago people kept going on about how it shouldn't even exist... so I figured by that logic nobody would bother looking for it.”

“Well done!” you smile warmly at her. “That's like something Gin would come up with.”

“Nah, Gin would come up with a way to make it more insulting.”

Laughing, you turn to your wife to find her deep in thought. “Hey, come on. Let's get some rest and talk to Shunsui and Unohana tomorrow, see if we can win them over.”

“I'm trying to remember something,” Yoruichi frowns. “I feel like it's relevant to the situation, I just can't quite put my finger on it.”

“Well then sleep on it,” you suggest, motioning to the door out of your office. “Everyone get some sleep, it'll be another long day tomorrow.”

“I'll stay up here with Captain Urahara,” Rangiku volunteers. “I'm comfortable enough here.”

“As will I,” Tenri agrees, heading off to fetch another futon.

“You heard the Captain,” Rangiku stares at Tatsuki as she tries to protest. “Sleep. You'll need it to train tomorrow.”

A few hours later you wake up, as if sensing that something was off. To your side you can see Yoruichi sitting under the moonlight in contemplative silence, as if meditating. How long has she been that way?

“Yoruichi, sleep,” you grumble, causing her to turn her head towards you. “I know it bothers you to feel like you should know something, but we both need to rest. We'll figure it out in the morning, okay?”

After a few moments, a familiar warmth returns to your side and you drift off once more.

“You didn't sleep very well, did you?” you wonder aloud as the disheveled face of your wife greets you in the morning.

She cocks her eyebrow at you. “Whatever gave you that impression?”

“Oh... I can just tell.”

Washing, brushing, and other vital rituals seem to slow the morning to a crawl, but eventually you manage to stumble upstairs to find Rangiku more or less prepared to face the day. Urahara on the other hand still looks like Frankenstein's monster laid out on the operating table.

“He's still not awake,” you observe.

“Nope, and I very nearly decided to call in sick,” Rangiku admits, settling into your chair. “I'll get some paperwork done while you're out, but I'm afraid that's all I'll be good for today.”

“That's fine,” you shrug. “Make sure Arisawa and Kuchiki don't kill each other.”

“No promises.”

Returning to the ground floor, you find Yoruichi waiting at the door. She still only looks half-awake, probably because she was bothered the whole time by the outstanding question of Inaba's creator.

“So... which Captain do we start with?” she asks tiredly. “Or do we go separate ways?”

You sigh, sensing immediately that your wife's heart isn't going to be in this. “So what do we need to do to solve this mystery of yours?”

“Well now, what's with the change of pace?” she chuckles.

“You know the answer to that.”

With a subtle curl of her finger, she gestures for you to follow her. “Come on, we need to go to the library.”

“But the Academy is that way,” you observe, wondering where the hell your wife is taking you.

“I mean our library,” she clarifies. “The sealed archives of the Shihōin Clan.”

Wait, she means that library? You've heard of it for sure, but you've never been inside... nobody who's not a high-ranking member of Yoruichi's family is allowed to do so due to the sensitive nature of some of the records sealed there. The past locations of sacred objects, the final resting places of criminals whose punishments required sealing, old stories and rumors a thousand years old or more, all sorted neatly into stacks and stored away to collect dust.

“Of course,” she nods thoughtfully. “You're my wife, so you're allowed in.”

“That's... not how it works though?”

Yoruichi just shrugs off your concerns. “Whatever, if I say it works that way that's how it works. Who's gonna disagree, Yūshiro?”

Yeah... fair point actually. Her little brother is the last person who could possibly oppose Yoruichi's often convenient interpretations of the rules, and at the same time is probably the last person who'd ever disagree with her. So in all likelihood if she says something as the Clan head that's pretty much all there is to it.

“Alright,” you nod in agreement. “Lead the way.”

The Shihōin manor is as intimidating a structure as always, more of a flatland castle than a home. It's small wonder that Yoruichi doesn't like living here, the many rooms and floors are entirely too intimidating and stuffy to ever really feel comfortable inside it. Testament to that is the fact that Yoruichi always preferred her own barracks to the tall, multi-tiered home of her Clan.

“Well, no sense waiting around outside,” she muses, leading you right up to the front gate. One of the retainers stares at you both as you approach, white haori floating on the breeze, and immediately calls out for his companions to open the massive wooden doors to the manor grounds.

“We need entrance to the archives,” Yoruichi tells the man you presume to be the captain of the Clan's private guard. “Official business, afraid we can't stay long.”

“You are aware of the rules regarding use of the archives, Mistress Shihōin,” the man bows deeply while trying to keep up at the same time. “Outsiders are not allowed entrance.”

“This isn't an outsider” Yoruichi insists, growing annoyed at having someone question her knowledge of the regulations of her Clan. “This is Kusajishi Riku, Captain of the Ninth Division.”

“Hi,” you wave awkwardly.

“Mistress Shihōin,” the man persists, “I'm certain that at very least you should speak with Master Yūshiro about this request.”

“Fine, send for him,” Yoruichi brushes off the comment. “Then I'll explain to him.”

It takes a few minutes for Yoruichi's little brother to catch up with you, and for once he seems to be wearing clothes meant for a young boy rather than a girl. By then you've marched through the main building, out along a long veranda, across a large pond, and found a small open tea room that rests on pillars jutting out from the water. Yoruichi motions for you to sit.

“The archives are beneath the building just adjacent to this teahouse,” she explains. “Brother.”

“Sis!” Yūshiro greets his older sister enthusiastically. “It's been years since you visited us here! What've you been doing all this time that keeps you so busy?”

“I'm the Executive of the Onmitsukidō,” she sighs emphatically. “That's a big job you know.”

“Captain Fēng still visits me all the time!”

Yoruichi arches an eyebrow at you. “I'll bet she does.”

“What does that mean?”

“You'll find out eventually, kiddo,” you shrug.

“Anyway, we're going into the archives,” Yoruichi insists.

“But Captain Kusajishi isnt' allowed.”

“We're married Yūshiro, she's a member of our family,” Yoruichi shakes her head as her brother's eyes widen in surprise. Then he blushes furiously and mutters something unintelligible about “lewdness”.

“I'll take that as a “go ahead”, then,” Yoruichi smirks as the younger Shihōin struggles to process what he's heard.

“Here we are,” Yoruichi announces as she leads you to the bottom of a set of stairs and opens a heavy wooden door into a pitch-black chamber. “The archives.”

“It's dark in here,” you observe calmly, “how're we supposed to read?”

Yoruichi reaches out and places her hand on the inside of the wall, and seems to run Tsuzuri Raiden into a bundle of cables. As the arcs crawl along the wall they ignite a series of glass fixtures, like lamps, and the full space inside is illuminated bit by bit.

It actually takes a moment to catch your breath... how the hell are you supposed to find anything in here?

“The entire foundation of the castle is the archive!” you exclaim loudly, glaring down at floor after floor, row after row of records. Leather bound tomes, rolled scrolls, even a few stone slabs here and there. “How much stuff is in here!?”

“The collected knowledge and records of the Soul Society, from before the Central 46 and the Gotei 13 were founded,” Yoruichi explains. “Thousands of years, recorded in extreme detail. And only the head of the Shihōin Clan has the training to be able to sort their way through it all.”

“I think I'll start with the criminal records,” she muses, walking off towards one section of the archives. “More recent, a hundred years or so perhaps.”

“Do you know what you're looking for?”

She shakes her head. “Not exactly. Help me find the section from immediately after Aizen wiped out the prisoners in the Maggots' Nest.”

After what feels like an hour or so you finally succeed in isolating a series of files that Yoruichi takes an interest in, and she immediately sets to work sorting through them.

“Just tell me if you see anything familiar,” she tells you, opening the first file. “These are arrest records from around ninety years ago, specifically those cases handled by the Onmitsukidō.”

After being shown several files, one finally catches your eye. “This one looks a lot like that reigai!”

Yoruichi flips the file around to look it over herself and immediately agrees. “This is Yushima Ōko, a scientist from the SRDI. Crimes listed are all related to unsanctioned weapons design... I wasn't actually here in person when the arrest was conducted, apparently his combat abilities were always pathetic. His case was handled by a team of rank and file Onmitsu.”

“You think he has something to do with this?”

“I do. This was shortly after Operation Spearhead was shut down.”

"Is he still in the Maggots' Nest?"

"He should be," Yoruichi nods. "We could pay him a visit, but it says in his file that he's in a near-catatonic state. We could also check the official records of the Central 46, which are held..."

"...in the special archives," you frown. "Meaning we'd need to deal with the bureaucrats."

"Or we could always break in," Yoruichi shrugs. "Wouldn't be my first time."

“Do you think he might actually be a reigai?” you ask, considering the point that he was described as being 'near-catatonic'. “That your team captured a body double?”

Yoruichi stares at the file in front of her, tapping lightly on her cheek with her fingertip. “I suppose it isn't impossible. But I see no clear evidence to support such a notion either. Really we just don't know the truth.”

“Then we ought to pay him a visit,” you suggest calmly. “Do you have a Sanrei glove lying around here someplace?”

“I think I might...”

Several minutes later you've grabbed the tools you need from the mansion and headed off towards the Maggots' nest: you found a Sanrei glove amid a small collection of tools in the room Yoruichi grew up in centuries ago, which looks like it hasn't been used much since. From her little brother's room, you've appropriated a stuffed toy wasp. It seems to have been a gift at some point, but either out of embarrassment or simply because he doesn't like bugs Yūshiro keeps it in his closet.

“We're here to interrogate a prisoner,” Yoruichi announces at the front gate. “We won't need any escort.”

“Of course, ma'am,” the guard on duty bows deeply. “You can head through after leaving your zanpakuto in the entryway.”

“I hate this part,” you frown, setting aside Tenkotsuki and Kobara no Tachi.

“We are still here, my dear,” Tenkotsuki's voice chides you. “Do not be silly.”

“It's not silly,” you protest in a low grumble. “Leaving a part of myself at the door... it always felt so insulting.”

“You almost sound like you could use a prison riot,” Yoruichi teases you with a nudge. “That'd be exciting!”

“Never that lucky,” you sigh. “People see you stroll in and have a heart attack.”

“And you're any better?” she retorts with a raucous laugh. “Give me a break! There are inmates down here who've never even seen you that know to be afraid of you!”

“That's because people talk a lot of bullshit. I mean, the average shinigami in the other Divisions can't possibly be that scared of me.”

Yoruichi's only response is a wry, but oddly silent, grin.

The main chamber of the prison is much the same as it always was back during your time serving under Yoruichi, with white-robed prisoners milling about freely. Most of them are kept here not by the threat of violence if they ever tried to escape, but simply by the knowledge that escape from this place is impossible.

One of them recognizes the face of the Executive Commander. “It's her!”

The inmates scramble to get out of your way, and as they see your backs a few even remark in alarm that “she” is being accompanied by “that devil woman”.

“Huh, I guess they are scared of both of us.”

Yoruichi shrugs. “Don't take it personally. All Captains are kind of scary if you think about it from the average shinigami's perspective. Many of them will graduate, serve out their entire careers, and die in battle only ever seeing their own Captains a few times, usually at prescribed events. For all intents and purposes we may as well not exist.”

“I guess in some Divisions it's like that,” you frown, heading deeper into the prison complex.

Finally, you arrive at the correct cell.

You look over the man, seated in a chair with his arms cuffed to the armrests. His green hair is stringy, clearly uncared-for, and and the eyes it hangs about seem sunken and dull. Certainly this is the look of a man who lost his desire to live when his life's work was suddenly rejected by the Central 46, whom he no doubt saw as patrons... just one more life they ruined.

“This is weird,” you grumble. “This whole policing business and all. It's been a long time.”

“You want me to ask the questions?” Yoruichi offers quietly. You nod in agreement, telling her you'll focus on trying to discern just how far gone Yushima really is.

“You are Yushima Ōko, correct?” Yoruichi demands of her prisoner. “Yes or no?”

Yushima doesn't reply, but you do notice something: his pupils contract in response to the question, though he continues to stare straight ahead.

“Are you the same Yushima who lead Project Spearhead?” your wife continues. Again, the only response is in his pupils. If he's putting on a show it's a damn good one.

Yoruichi seems to be losing her patience with the situation at hand. “Answer me: are you the one responsible for the actions carried out by the reigai known as Inaba Kagerōza?”

There's a subtle response around the man's eyes, his brows furrow ever so slightly. That just about settles it in your mind, he's still in there someplace.

“This is going nowhere,” you frown, donning the glove behind your back. “I'll get him to talk.”

In a surprise move you deliver a swift palm-strike to Yushima's solar plexus. That ought to pop the red pill right out of his body no matter where it's hidden! Any second now... aaaany second now. It's gonna pop right out.

The man's chair goes over backwards and the back of his skull cracks against the floor, knocking him out cold.

“I... wait, this one wasn't a reigai too?” you ask, feeling very confused about the whole affair. “So this really was Yushima?”

“I told you he was a pushover,” Yoruichi jokes, nudging Yushima with her foot as he lies back in his fallen chair. “Well, at least we've confirmed that much. I think it's highly likely that he planned this whole thing, even if he might not have been the direct mastermind.”

“He's... not going to be answering any questions any time soon, is he?” you ask with a sigh. “Shit. I overdid it.”

“That you most certainly did, dear,” Yoruichi nods. “You really don't remember how to play this game, do you?”

“What, good cop bad cop?” you shrug. “Nope, can't say I ever got the hang of it.”

“We could try waking him up,” Yoruichi suggests. “Or not. I'm not entirely sure it's worth the time and effort at this point, even if he's not a mindless shell of a man.”

“Let's check on Kisuke,” you suggest. “See if he's back among the living.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Yoruichi agrees, setting Yushima's chair back up on its feet.

When you finally return to the Ninth Division it's nearly lunch time, and much to your surprise Kisuke's already back on his feet and watching Rukia and Tatsuki spar. He hasn't found a replacement shirt yet, and you can see that his entire body is still crisscrossed with vivid scars, but despite your best efforts he seems to have found his hat.

“Ah, welcome back Captains!” he waves from his seat atop a rock in your garden. “Good to see you've been keeping busy.”

“Look!” you growl dramatically. “The mummy walks!”

“You look like you had a run-in with an oversized blender,” Yoruichi sighs, taking a seat on the edge of the veranda. “But it's good to see you awake.”

“I may have actually healed a bit too fast for my own good,” Kisuke admits sheepishly. “These scars might not fade for a long time... it's the price I paid for expediency.”

“You restructured yourself this way,” you observe thoughtfully. “So as far as your body is concerned there's nothing to heal, is there?”

“Exactly right!” Kisuke exclaims. “So, you understand what my Bankai does. You have me at a disadvantage!”

“A lady should always keep some secrets,” Yoruichi smirks. “You know that.”

“Well, I'm alive at least,” Kisuke smiles, turning his attention back toward your students. “That's enough for now. Go eat.”

Rukia and Tatsuki excuse themselves, and Kisuke frowns suddenly. “So, what have you learned?”

Wouldn't work. These aren't "wounds", they're exactly the way Kisuke configured them with his Bankai. Also recall that Riku has a scar that refuses to fade because she crossed over with it. In essence hers IS the normal state.

>>848958
I don't understand exactly what they are if not scars.

He was cut apart, then reassembled himself in nearly the exact same order, and on the borders of where those cuts were, there are lines or depressions in his skin where the flesh didn't meet perfectly, but not actual scar tissue?

Otherwise i don't know what you think scar tissue actually is.

But then if his flesh didn't reattach perfectly, wouldn't his nerves, tendons and muscle fibers be all fucked up?
Wouldn't he be totally unable to move?
>>
>>848976
Anon, this is magic we're talking about, working on spiritual beings. These healing methods can only return a being to the way it was before it was wounded. In Riku's case her scar manifested on her spiritual body when she crossed over because of the strong emotions associated with it, and that became a basic feature of her body. Healing techniques can't remove that scar any more than they could change the shape of her nose, or make her taller. With Kisuke, his Bankai is heavily conceptual: he essentially reshaped his own body with it to "heal" his wounds. Applying healing techniques on top of that does nothing, because the way his body is now is essentially the way it should be, same as how Riku's scar will never disappear.

Do you understand now?

You recount to Kisuke all of the details of your own fights, as well as the results of your investigations today. You also make sure to tell him your suspicions about Yushima's involvement, which he seems to consider carefully.

“I believe your instincts are correct,” he agrees. “The likely order of events is that he created Inaba in order to correct his own shortcomings, who in turn spent the time since then planning this rebellion.”

“So do you have any way of helping the reigai,” Yoruichi asks, “assuming more of them surrender?”

“I can think of a few measures to take,” Kisuke muses, already working on the problem in his mind. “I can already make reiatsu-blocking gigai, so banishment is an option. If you wanted me to get a little more creative I could probably find a way to fit their pills into a simulation of sorts. Give them the illusion of freedom and power.”

“That is, assuming you could convince the Central 46.”

“We have something of a plan for that,” you admit. “I think Yoruichi's got a good case to make.”

“Have you spoken to any of the other Captains?”

Yoruichi shakes her head. “We wanted to check on you first, get your opinion. The better idea we have of what could be done the more likely it is we can win over Shunsui and Unohana. They're the key.”

“I wish you luck then,” Kisuke nods, lowering his hat over his eyes. “As for me, I hope you'll forgive me for not wanting to talk to the Central 46 any time soon.”

“I don't think any of us ever want to,” you mutter, “but I understand perfectly. You gonna be okay like this?”

“I think so,” Kisuke replies calmly. “If you mean the scars, they won't get in my way and they'll probably fade in time. And if they don't I could always paint my face up like Mayuri.”

“Please don't!” Yoruichi laughs. “I don't think we could be friends anymore if you did that.”

“Oh, how is that any different from using any other cosmetics?”

“Because eyeliner and lipstick don't usually make you look like a total freak!”

“Well, the next step has to be to build our case,” you decide. “Get Shunsui to agree to leniency at the very least, and have a workable alternative to just killing them all.”

“I'll begin working on the latter,” Kisuke offers, leaning heavily on his zanpakuto as he stands. “I'm still getting used to having fundamentally altered my own body, so I may be a bit slower at it than normal.”

“That's fine,” you tell him, thankful for the help. “All we really need is to know which ideas are possible, no reasonable person would expect us to be able to demonstrate on the spot.”

“We're not dealing with reasonable people,” Yoruichi reminds you. “You go to First, I'll head to Fourth. With any luck we can come up with a coordinated response before the reigai try for some sort of last stand.”

Yamada Hanatarō has been dreading this day for weeks.

Today he has to lead a team of Fourth Division shinigami to check the infrastructure around the Ninth Division barracks. Water supply, heating and cooling, sewage, electricity... all of the conveniences of modern life need to be carefully tested and the results recorded. But the size and importance of the task isn't what terrifies Hanatarō: it's the fact that this means direct contact with the members of Ninth Division.

His own leader, Captain Unohana, speaks highly of their combat ability, and they're known for encouraging the practice and growth of the arts within the Seireitei. They even publish the Gotei 13's only newspaper. But they're also just as ferocious as the Eleventh Division, even if they're much better at disguising it. Starting at the top their Captain, Kusajishi Riku, is a former Onmitsukidō officer responsible for policing and punishing criminals from the other shinigami units. There are plenty of rumors about just her, like how she has hollow powers and beats menos to death with her bare hands. And if that's not enough, her subordinates are just as scary: her Lieutenant and Commandos are possibly the most elite group of fighters in the Seireitei, and there are rumors that in the past a single team of Ninth Division soldiers were enough to handle a gillian. Normally that requires a frantic call to a Captain or Lieutenant just to make it out alive, and even that doesn't always work.

And then there are the hollows: “arrancar”, they're officially called. Captain Unohana warned him and his entire team of subordinates to avoid them entirely for the duration of their mission.

“They may appear to be our allies,” she told him very clearly with a look of unusual seriousness on her face, “but in reality they are hers. They are the most powerful hollows yet encountered, and I do not know how far their allegiances to the Gotei 13 as a whole extend. I do not believe fear is warranted, but caution would be wise.”

Hanatarō shudders involuntarily, deciding to just start with the mess hall and hope for the best.

And that's where it started to go wrong.

After checking the gas connections and electric outlets in the kitchen himself, he went up front to the line of shinigami trying to get breakfast to check the appliances: tea kettles, coffee pots, warming trays, that sort of thing. But Hanatarō immediately ducks for cover when he sees a black-haired woman with colorful facial markings and a bony, horned mask fragment on her forehead... an arrancar already!?

“Good morning Miss Apacci,” the cook on duty greets the arrancar, who merely grumbles out her request.

“I need a redeye,” she tells him. “Could you make an espresso for me?”
>1/?
>>
>>858168
Oh, that's neat

A look at just how bizarre and insular the Ninth is perceived to be (Even by the already bizarre and insular standards of the Seireitei) by the rest of the squads.
>>
>>858168
“Long night?” the older-looking man chuckles.

Apacci sighs, piling food onto a plate. “I was up 'til morning with a pet project.”

“What, you mean like a hobby?”

She nods, accepting a small cup of some sort of liquid and dumping it into her coffee. “I've been learning sword appraisal.”

“That's an unusual hobby around here,” the old man informs her, sounding deeply amused at the notion. “So, what've you learned about the topic?”

“Enough to know that every asauchi has the same straight hamon pattern,” the arrancar replies with a smug grin. “They only gain a unique pattern when a shinigami imprints on 'em. So us arrancar should have swords without a pattern too, right? Since they're not independent beings?”

“I guess?” the cook shrugs. “I can see why someone would think so.”

“But ours do,” the arrancar continues. “The arrancar Aizen sent to attack us have zanpakuto that are as plain as any rookie shinigami's asauchi is, even if the blade shapes can get weird. But all of us who Captain Kusajiishi helped evolve have swords with... well, character.”

“I see... have you presented your findings to the Captain yet?”

“Like hell, I don't even know what it means yet.”

As she explains her findings, Hanatarō manages to escape from the mess hall and out into the grounds where he can take a minute to catch his breath. The midmorning sun is already starting to heat the city up... it's going to be a bad day to be working outside.

“That was close,” he sighs wearily, deciding to go check the exterior lighting by the firing ranges while the temperature is still reasonable. “I need to be more careful.”

The sound of gunshots lets the Fourth Division officer know that he's found the right place, and after putting on hearing protection he quickly sets to work checking the electrical system for faults. But when he looks up he spies a man in an unfamiliar white uniform firing a pistol downrange. He's tall, with messy brown hair... and a fanged jaw set against his skin right between his collarbones. The shingami standing around him stare wide-eyed as he reloads his weapon.

Another arrancar!?

Hanatarō whistles loudly, pretending not to notice as another messy-haired man wearing the distinctive sleeveless uniform of the Commandos joins the arrancar on the firing line.

“Nice shooting, Starrk!” the newcomer loudly encourages the arracar as he produces a lever action rifle from his range bag. “How many rounds?”

“One hundred and seventy three,” the arrancar responds calmly.

The Commando lets loose an appreciative whistle. “Through three holes, damn fine work!”

“Is there some way to get the targets to move?” the arrancar named “Starrk” asks as Hanatarō slinks away, still whistling tunelessly.

“I think that can be arranged...”

What is with today? It keeps getting hotter and hotter, and Hanatarō just can't seem to stay away from the arrancar his Captain warned him about!

He heads towards the inner court of the Ninth Division, where the Captain and higher-ranking officers all live and work, to check for any faults there. First of all, he heads for the Captain's home in hopes of catching her there and letting her know that the work is even happening.

“Hello?” he announces his presence immediately upon entering the front reception room. The lights are off, and the whole room feels a little stuffy from the afternoon heat. “Um... it's Fourth Division's Seventh Seat Yamada here... I need to check on the plumbing and power! My Captain should have told you?”

From outside comes a voice. “The Captain is not here. Perhaps I could serve as a replacement?”

In the side garden Hanatarō finds a fairly tall and muscular woman, with blonde hair, dusky skin, and white hakama. She moves swiftly but carefully through a series of stances, some form of martial art, with a practiced gracefulness... and it's only after watching for a few seconds that the shinigami notices the porcelain fragments covering her jawline and upper chest.

Also, that what he presumes to be her top is lying on the porch, carefully folded with a wide-bladed sword laid atop it.

“Warm day,” the topless arrancar comments, shifting her right leg forward as her right fist extends. “You said you were here to examine the infrastructure?”

“I'msorryIdidntmeantoseeanythingIlljustbegoingnowlotsofstufftodo!” Hanatarō shouts in absolute terror, his face beet red behind his hands. Halibel simply stares at him in disbelief, caught somewhere between the Dan Bian and Yun Shou stances of her traditional tai chi routine.

“Once more but intelligible, please,” she requests quietly.

“I don't mean to intrude, I'll just be going...”

Halibel arches a skeptical eyebrow. “I thought you had work to do?”

“I do...” Hanatarō admits, desperately trying to think of a way out of the situation.

“Then you should do it,” Halibel insists quietly, returning to her routine. “Or would you have me be your excuse to be remiss in your duties?”

“Right away, ma'am!”

“What a strange young man,” Halibel muses quietly to herself as she practices a series of powerful, sweeping kicks.

“Okay, okay, calm down...” Hanatarō pants to himself, fumbling into the kitchen and grasping the edge of the sink. “Nothing to be concerned with... she didn't seem angry... I'm not gonna die. You're gonna be cool, Hanatarō! The Captain chose you to do a job and you're going to see it through!”

Having sufficiently worked himself up, the Fourth Division officer sets to work under the sink. The water supply is fine, the tap heats up as it should, and the gas supply to the stove is working. The refrigerator's cooling unit is running nicely, and there are no faults with the electrical supply that he can notice, and oh gods she came in from the garden.

Hanatarō backs against the nearest wall and shuts his eyes, holding absolutely still as if he thought Halibel's vision was movement-based. The arrancar wets down a washrag and wipes her forehead and and the back of her neck, then pauses to stare at the shinigami.

“What are you doing?”

“Nothing, ma'am!” he shouts, edging slowly towards the doorway to the front room. “I was just finished, actually, don't mind...”

Having reached the edge of the wall Hanatarō falls flat on his backside with a surprised yelp.

“Why are you acting so oddly?” Halibel frowns down at him arms crossed in front of her.

“Well, you're...” he begins, struggling to find his words.

“I'm what?”

Hanatarō gulps loudly, looking for all the world like a man who knows he's been condemned to die. “You're half-naked.”

Halibel blinks silently, still staring at the shinigami on the floor as he glances at the wall behind her. Finally, she speaks.

“By that logic all lesser hollows are naked, all the time,” she observes quietly. “So does this mean you fight them with your eyes closed?”

“Actually, I've never really... fought... before...” he admits sheepishly, perhaps revealing more than he intended. “We Fourth Division shinigami are healers, we don't actually go out into the field very often and whenever we do we're supposed to avoid actual fighting.”

Halibel turns away, walking over to the counter where she set down her white top, and pulls it on over her shoulders. Then she zips it up to the base of her neck, leaving the mask fragments along her jaw exposed. After having donned the garment, though it was technically unnecessary as it doesn't really cover anything important that wasn't already covered by her mask fragments, Hanatarō seems to relax slightly.

That moment of relaxation ends almost immediately.

“It's been centuries since I was a “normal” hollow,” Halibel muses almost as if to herself. “Tell me, what do you know of arrancar?”

“Not much, ma'am,” Hanatarō admits. “Only what my Captain told me.”

“And what were you told?”

Hanatarō swallows nervously. “That you're the strongest hollows ever encountered and that we should avoid you.”

“A sound warning,” Halibel agrees quietly, “but also counterproductive. How much time have you spent here today?”

“A few hours.”

Halbel nods slowly. “And how many arrancar have you seen?”

“Three... including you.”

“Was anyone else as afraid of us as you are?”

“I'm not afraid...” Hanatarō tries to argue.

“To lie to others is one thing,” Halibel frowns. “To lie to yourself is another. Centuries ago I was a hollow, and fear is something every hollow is intimately familiar with. We live in it every day, and can effortlessly spot it in others.”

“So I'm afraid of you,” the shinigami acknowledges. “Who wouldn't be?”

“The Ninth Division,” Halibel observes thoughtfully. “It's easy to fear and hate what you do not understand, and it's easy to misunderstand that with which you have no experience.”

“What about the arrancar who attacked the Seireitei?” Hanatarō questions, seeming to ponder each word. “The ones who work for Aizen?”

“Arrancar, like shinigami and humans, are varied,” Halibel explains patiently. “Some seek the power to dominate, others desire companionship and the betterment of others.”

“So... you don't think you're a threat to us?”

“Are you a threat to us?”

Taken aback by the reversal, Hanatarō initially falls silent in thought.

“I can't speak for everyone in the Gotei 13,” he admits quietly after several long moments of introspection. “But given how most shinigami outside the Ninth Division are taught to think, and the policies of the Central 46... if you weren't actively assisting us at a difficult time we'd probably have orders to kill you on sight.”

“Had you the power to do so,” Halibel continues, unfazed by the rather frank admission, “would you carry out said orders?”

“I'm not sure,” Hanatarō replies.

Halibel affixes her zanpakuto's sheath to her back, strapping it carefully in place. “Perception changes with experience.”

“I think I see your point,” the shinigami agrees. “I may still be scared of arrancar, but after talking with you... maybe I'm a little less so?”

“Good,” Halibel nods quietly. “Captain Kusajishi will return shortly, and I plan to meet with her. Is that all?”

“Yeah,” Hanatarō muses, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly. “Everything seems to be in good working order. I'll just see myself out.”

With a polite bow, the Fourth Division shinigami makes to leave the building.

“I... hope we can speak again some time!” he adds sheepishly before stepping out the front door. “Goodbye, miss...”

“Halibel,” the arrancar inclines her head. “Your Division is welcome here... I'm certain Lady Riku would agree.”

After Hanatarō leaves, Halibel sighs to herself.

“You could have announced yourself,” she says seemingly to nobody in particular.

“You were handling that well,” a voice replies. It's difficult to tell whether the unseen speaker is more amused or genuinely pleased with how events played out. “I always suspected you were a people person... though maybe topless exercise is a little much.”

“Lady Riku, you of all people should understand my position,” Halibel insists calmly.

“Unlike other hollows you have breasts now,” Riku points out, allowing her body to become visible again as she unravels her spell. “That he saw you as a person deserving some privacy is a good sign, I think.”

“That strikes me as rather superficial... or would you disagree?"

Riku shrugs. “Given that he'd be just as terrified of me on general principle, who can say?”

“But I do have some hope. Don't you?”

Halibel shuts her eyes in contemplation, a faint smile tugging at her lips.

"Perhaps."

Considering that Seireitei society is witnessing some radical changes due to circumstances, Tia's becoming the proverbial "Socrates" of Seireitei with all the armor piercing questions she's been asking.
>>
>>858904
Partly it's that she gets even MORE terse when she's angry. There's a few things about Nel that set Halibel off: failing to appreciate her subordinates' loyalty and passively allowing Aizen to use them to manipulate her are high on that list.

Hanatarō on the other hand may be meek, but he's clearly diligent and tries to be respectful. So although Halibel wouldn't want him around all the time, she finds him inoffensive and is fine with engaging him in conversation.
>>
>>858977
So what activities does Nel do while "soul-searching" herself? Does she partake in some of the Arts and Crafts activities to take the edge off or is she still in the half-conflicted languishing walk around the park phase?
>>
>>858992
She was taught how to meditate, the same way that most shinigami perform jinzen. Trouble is she's not very good at it, so every time she tries she just ends up with a case of the bad feels. And she's not the sort who would willingly engage in "arts and crafts" if she's upset about something not being right.

In other words she's doing poorly.
>>
>>859041
Can we get Strawberry and the other humans to talk to her?
>>
>>859098
I wouldn't oppose that of course, if you think it would help somehow.
>>
>>859098
I don't think that's a wise decision in a sense. You know how headstrong Strawberry gets whenever he takes up the "saving the princess" shtick. Yes I think Goat girl needs some company, but I don't want them doing stupid teenager stuff like an impromptu rescue.
>>
>>859174
I was thinking more like she needs a motivation speech Riku won't give her.

Okay, have every human but strawberry talk to her then.
>>
>>859041
>rukia can't get riku out of her mind, a hole through her haori and her blade soaked with blood

When did that happen, exactly?
I don't remember it at all.

Was that when we fought the luchador? Was she there for that?
>>
>>859852
yes, Rukia sported a broken leg so she couldn't go places when Riku stepped in. we got the hole when the wrestler did one of his flashy punches.
>>
>>859871
Ah.
I don't see why exactly that'd be stuck in her mind, though.
Surely she's seen injuries that bad or worse before, right?
>>
>>859878
no, back during WWI, Riku was on the frontlines but only stepped in when shit was going FUBAR and would leave with no serious injuries. The fight with the Mask however had Riku fighting with her subordinates and taking heavy injuries bordering life-threatening alongside them. Captains rarely get heavily injured because of how stupidly strong they are compared to the common shimigami so seeing Riku getting down and dirty in a battle like a trench soldier and come out with wounds that should've been fatal in most circumstances (i.e. a star-shaped burn hole in her torso and some fractured bones) would be a very Surreal experience. Keep in mind in other divisions, most Shimigami serve their entire careers without even seeing their captain fight, or even less take a flesh wound.
>>
>>859908
So less that someone got injured, and more that *riku* got injured.
The sudden revelation that her force of nature captain is a squishy human too, on occasion.

Yep, our blood is red just the same.
>>
...welp, now I ship Hanataro and Halibel. Just gonna add that to the list of ships I didn't have before this quest started
>>
>>859871
Actually it was a collapsed lung.

>>859921
Partly that. Mostly shame: her Captain had to step in and take a punch for her when she was about to get finished off, then she got gut-shot trying to defend her. And then instead of lying there coughing up blood like certain people Riku just went ahead and finished the fight.
>>
>>858477
Is it weird that I think the other version, with more skeletal bits covering her body, is significantly sexier?

No judgement. But the overall smaller proportion of mask fragment was just luck of the draw. And she's stronger for it.
>>
>>860936
To all sentient hollows/arrancar/menos: since you have hollow holes, have you ever tried feeling the inside of your hollow holes? If so, what's the sensation like?
>>
>>860936
Which is appreciated. Makes sense canonically and dice-wise. Also, we can use a stronger Tia. It's not like I'm here for the cheesecake. Really.

this, i'm curious
>>

Yes I know, its just my tast.
The strength boost, with how she can control water in all its states is pretty cool and I think you depicted her really well.

And she is not in the nazi dungeon
>>
Hmm I can find Yoruichi's and Halibel's spreadsheet update but not the third one
>>
>>861152
There are two spreadsheets.
>>
>>861219
oi, what does the inside of a hollow hole feel like?
it just looks like a black void, what's the texture?
>>
>>861254
>Halibel
"Like emptiness, a constant reminder of what we have lost. I will say no more."

>Riku
"There are no nerve endings there, it doesn't hinder any biological functions, and it's strangely indistinct to the touch. It will stop your fingertips like skin, but there's no tactile sensation involved. It's as if the spiritual body simply ends."

"Still surprised Halibel let me poke hers."
>>
>>861390
"The location of her Hollow hole is in her lower abdomen where her womb would be."

>so low it's not visible despite how much skin she shows
>she had to take her skirt off to let riku put her hand in there

What if u put ur dick in it :^)
>>
>>861390
Kisuke do you have any ideas what would happen if a hole closed?
>>
>>861447
A better question would be: Why is that very thing not part of a doujin yet?
>>
>>861457
>jizz in halibel's hollow hole
>somehow due to it's location, she becomes pregnant
I'm sure someone somewhere has made this.
>>
>>861464
>>861457
Better yet, she became a hollow due to miscarriage, and doing this causes her hollow hole to close up.

>Kisuke
"An 'arrancar' is a hollow that rips off their mask and becomes more like a 'shinigami': but what is a 'shinigami', and what is a 'hollow'? A 'shinigami' is defined as a soul that can use reiatsu, but how do they come to have reiatsu? Nobody can say for sure, not even me. A 'hollow' is a soul who loses their 'heart', leaving a hole and forming a mask: but what is 'the Heart' if not a literal organ within the body? The more philosophically-inclined can discuss such matters indefinitely, but in too many cases their ideas can be neither falsified nor verified by any observable phenomena."

"Not only do I have no idea what effect the healing of an arrancar's 'heart' might have, I cannot even tell you what an arrancar actually is. At least not to my satisfaction."
>>
>>861390
>Riku: "Still surprised Halibel let me poke hers."
So how small is her hole now? And among the Arrancar we know, if Apacci's hole is the one that shrank the most in terms of proportions, then whose hole is the smallest in size of diameter/radius? List them in order of smallest to largest.
>>
>>862097
Lilynette's is the smallest in absolute terms because she's tiny. Halibel's and Starrk's were never particularly large, and Apacci's has shrunk the most, to the point where they're so close as makes no difference. Mila Rose and Sung-Sun are about the same as well. So the order from smallest to largest would probably be
>Lilynette
>Halibel
>Apacci/Starrk
>Sung-Sun/Mila Rose
>>
>>861472
Hanataro, we have a job for you~
>>
>>864046
See >>861390
That part of an arrancar simply doesn't exist: her spine for example would just kind of not exist in that spot and resume existing on the edges of her hole. It's more of an existential thing.
