[The last thread has been archived. Every vote good or bad is appreciated! Now let's have some fun!]

>>>>>

Your name is Jacky Richmond, you are a farmer, and you are currently catching your breath while sitting on the cold and roughly-hewn steps leading to the second floor of the Cavernous Mines.

A tiny yet fierce woman sits next to you and passes an oiled rag absentmindedly over the worn steel of her monster-slaying weapon. The two of you share nostalgia and conversation as you pass a precious few minutes.

“And you mean to tell me,” asks Jamie innocently enough, “That the two of these people were doing this in a coat closet? And you had no idea they were in there?”

Jamie and you were swapping stories at the moment - just not the rougher ones from your time in war. You were trying to keep it light and, in that way, had just told Jamie about the time you were at a house party not long after you got back home from overseas. The night was wearing on and you weren’t really feeling the crowd before, wouldn't you know it? You stuck your hand in something, so to say.

Your old friend, Chris, had dragged you along for the night and a little after 1 AM you were moving to excuse yourself. As you were nervously staring down a particularly clingy girl and trying to sneak out of the house you opened a closet for your jacket, stuck your hand inside, and were surprised to feel a pair of moist Goddess Fruits™ in your hand instead of your winter wear. Some cursing, smacking, and apologizing later you were wondering why anyone would try and have sex in a foyer coat closet. Seriously? There are cars, or bathrooms, or bushes for these kinds of things.

“I swear. I had no idea, and I still don’t know the name of the girl, but my friend Chris will never let me live it down. I was worried everyone would think I’m a pervert but, well, I think most people just chalked it up to all sides being drunk.”

Jamie lets out a low chuckle. “But you weren’t, correct?”

“Drunk? Not at the time.”

“You don’t seem the type to me to often-” She wiggles her hand a bit in the air, as if trying to pin down the right phrase. “‘Party hardy,’ I should say. You seem like a good boy.”

Is she calling you boring? You wonder. Jamie picks up on a slight distaste in your expression.

“I mean that as a compliment - many of my brothers rebelled and were ‘bad boys,’ but really they were just stupid. There is a difference between having fun and creating problems, yes? You seem the type to fix, to not create problems, to do what is right. But, I am sure you still have fun.”

"I do." You lightly boast.

Jamie looks up to you, her expression set in a determined look. "But responsibility comes first, yes? Work before pleasure?"

[Has Jacky been known to cut loose, or is he more the sober type? Is he the life of the party or the Designated Driver - or both?]

A. I’m a fun guy - I can dance and beer pong with the best of them. It's important to have fun.
B. I make sure everything goes smoothly - but I can still have fun. Just not “crazy” fun. Balance is important.
C. I’m more of the type to relax and observe at a party. I don’t have adventures in coat closets. I am responsible.

You explain to Jamie that a sense of balance is important. You know what happens when you constantly work too hard for your own good, and you know what it’s like to float around with no responsibility, no purpose to tie you down.

“Neither all work nor all play is optimal, I think. Balance and moderation in all things, yeah?”

“Work is what brings us food, shelter, and wealth. Work and sacrifice can bring glory. Our world depends on the hard work of people like you, or my grandfather, or the people of this town. I believe this to be true and have seen it with my own eyes, whereas the temptations of the material can lead a man to ruin, no?”

“Ah, well,” you get up and stretch your arms a bit, “if you don’t have fun then what’s the hard work for? We should try to enjoy life while we have it. That doesn’t mean adventures in coat closets, it just means finding what’s important. That’s what I think.”

Jamie gives a pleased hum. “Well said, Jacky Richmond. Did you ever consider becoming a guru? Or writing fortune cookie fortunes, perhaps?”

The two of you laugh quietly as you trudge down the staircase, your chuckles becoming more stressed as you venture farther down towards the next room. It’s easy enough to laugh with Jamie but the thought of danger ahead sobers the mood quickly.

You and Jamie agree that she’ll watch your back as you venture into the next room.

The white gemstone feels cold and ominous at your touch - the foreboding is almost palpable, and you’re not sure if you can chalk it up to nerves or not. Still, you have no intent on turning back here and focus on opening the door. The Doorcrystal pulses once before the door lurches upwards, shuddering and shaking as it disappears into the cavern’s walls.

You take one, two, three measured steps forward with your sword drawn.

A foe lunges at you from your left and onto your shield-arm. You anticipate the attack before it even begins and brace with your right foot while shoving through your torso, body stiff and tense as you power through the gelatinous mass that attempts to envelop you.

>Surprise Round: 11 Grapple vs 20 Defense
>Defense wins

You growl out as you push the enemy back and over onto its back - or what should be its back - as Jamie steps up to your side and brandishes her light and her weapon. The enemy, now prone, is revealed to be a green Slime. You lash out with your sword [and assuredly deal 5 damage] to the stunned Slime. Jamie follows suit with two strikes of her own [for 10 damage], her second slash vanquishing the foe.

It roils and bubbles violently before dissipating in a cloud of greasy ash and smoke.

A high-pitched sound or some sort of chiming echoes throughout the room. You look up and out to the North, away from the entryway, and watch as a series of eerily-green torches light up along the walls of the large, round room.

Where the chime seems to have originated from stands a mosaic of three green crystals above three grey crystals embedded in the far wall above the exit doorway. The leftmost green crystal is now glowing sharply, and a glowing green line flows out from its left-hand side.

Three large stones litter the cavern floor.

Two Slimes are now approaching your position. One approaches from the right, the second from the left.

The exit doorway is marked with a Blue Doorcrystal.

"The door's blue this time, Jamie-" you call out, your arms at the ready to intercept the incoming Slimes, "What do we have to do?"

"A challenge," she reponses stoically. "There is some sort of challenge or puzzle that we must satisfy the terms of to progress."

A. Jamie tanks the hits, you support with strikes
B. You tank the hits, Jamie supports
C. Retreat into the stairwell

You step up in front of your comrade and hold your shield out in determination and confidence.

You spare a quick look to your friend-in-arms. "I'll take the lead if you strike them down, alright?"

She smiles back, offers a "Roger that!" and then clashes her sword onto her shield in encouragement. You strike your shield in response. You've got this!

The Slimes move closer and closer, their pseudo-mouths choking out gargles and barks as they shamble towards their prey - you.

The Slime coming from the right is closer and reaches you a sparse few seconds before the Slime to your left.

Jamie growls at them, and her battle fury is almost infectious in its ferocity."Strike true, Jacky! Send them back to the darkness!"

You lash out with your sword in a textbook downward strike.

[Please give me 3 rolls of 1d20. The first is for Jacky's attack with his sword, the other two are for Jamie's two attacks. My rolls are for on the Slime's defense.]

Your cut sings through the air cleanly and swiftly and, were it not for the slime’s good luck, would have dealt a mighty blow against the gel. The beast somehow manages to catch your sword between its amorphous jaws with a great “sloooorping” noise. You attempt to pull the blade away but find the Slime attempting to wrestle your blade out of your grip.

Perhaps left with no other option, you reel back with your shield arm and then begin to pound the face of the slime with the edge of your shield. Once you lash out, then twice you lash out, again and again you quickly jab and smash the reinforced edge of the shield into its garbling, choking form [for 10 damage].

The Slime, realizing its mistake of challenging the Richmond family technique that has been passed down through the ages, releases your sword only to have Jamie stab into its side for its trouble.

The Slime gurgles and turns towards her, the sword embedded in its gut hardly registering [and dealing 0 damage] as it roars out in rage. Spittle and goo fly off and alight on both your face and Jamie’s. You groan in disgust as Jamie unsheathes her silvered knife and then stabs it into the “head” of the Slime, [dealing 5 damage and] silencing it.

The second slime, having closed the distance during the scuffle, lashes out at you with a slime-ridden appendage.

The slime strikes at your torso and, though you raise your shield to block the strike, the sheer mass of the ooze is enough to strain your arm to the point of slight pain as it impacts your shield. It strikes twice more and you let out a slight pained grunt as your shoulder protests against the heavy blows [which deal 5 damage to you].

You manage to push the monster away and clear enough space for a counterattack. You could attack in a straightforward manner, but it may be best to attempt some tactics while there you have Jamie fighting with you…

“Let me try something. I’ll keep it preoccupied while you strike it down, okay?”

“Understood. Exercise caution, yes?”

You quickly step out, fast and low towards the Slime with a battle cry. It hisses and raises tendrils to its defense but you bat them away easily with your sword before arresting your momentum and swinging your shield overhead and down onto the mass of the Slime. With an unsettling “SQUELCH” your shield presses into its head, the Slime crying in pain and frustration as you lift away and then punch once more, this time the face of your shield striking it right above the mouth. The Slime rears back and hisses, its mass much less steady than before as it wobbles back and forth a bit.

Jamie takes this opportunity to dive forward and lash out with her sword and then her silvered blade. Both find purchase in the Slime and leave garish incisions on the monster’s form. Bright green goop seeps out of the beast as it rolls onto its injured side slightly. It resembles a holiday jelly about to fall off the kitchen table were it not for the violent rumbling and angry hissing coming from its mouth.

With the Slime on its last legs you and Jamie both usher forth in a pincer attack and cut the monster into ribbons. With one final cry it bursts into greasy ash and smoke, defeated. A chime once again fills the air from the other side of the room. You also notice a memento left behind by the Slime…

[Crystallized Slime x1 Obtained]

You look up to the far wall and see that the second (middle) of the green Crystals is now also glowing, along with a majority of the incised line stretching between that crystal and the next. However, you stand and watch for a moment as the Glowing effect recedes from right to left, the glowing line shrinking back towards the middle Crystal with each passing second.

"Jacky, do you see that?"

"The light?"

"Yes." Jamie points towards the far wall with her sword, the tip tracing the light's path from right to left. "The light is fading, receding. Like water pouring out from a straw, yes?"

She has a point. An odd one, but a point nonetheless. "They light up when we kill the Slimes, and now the light is fading..."

"And what about the other three, Jacky? The ones below the glowing Crystals?"

That's right, there are the gray crystals that still lay dormant. And the three large stones in the room are the only other things to apparent to you...

You look over the glowing glowing crystals and inscribed lines once more with a discerning eye. The light continues to fade, but now you feel reasonably sure on your analysis.

“It’s obviously some sort of timer.”

“A timer?” Jamie asks, her eyes narrowed at you before looking into the distance and at the crystals once more. “For what?”

“Something to do with the Slimes, or maybe the crystallized slime?” You walk towards the center of the large, round room with your eyes peeled for danger. “The chime happened when we killed the first and last Slime, right?”

“And the second time,” offers Jamie as she follows close behind.

You’re genuinely surprised by that. “I didn’t hear it - I was too involved in the fight. Did the second Crystal light up as well?”

Jamie nods and offers that “The amount of the wall that was illuminated increased by about a third or so each time we killed a Slime, I would say. However, the light also steadily decreased during that time…”

You do a complete once-over in the room but find nothing. All that remains are some average, mundane rocks and the rapidly-fading crystals. And the door, of course.

You tap the middle of the three rocks a few times and, thankfully, receive an encouraging response as the rightmost gray crystal flickers on and off with a dim light for each time that you tap the stone.

You and Jamie discuss excitedly about how the gray crystal is reacting to your touch.

“We should strike it, Jacky Richmond. Perhaps together?”

“Maybe. Let me see what happens when you hit it harder, first.” You take your shield and give the rock a solid punch with the metaled edge. The crystal gives off a brighter glow before once again fading to its original darkened state.

You direct Jamie to the far stone to your left while removing your surprisingly tiny pickaxe from your gear. On the count of "three" the two of you smack your respective rock simultaneously.

Only a single gray crystal on the far wall glows, the same one as before. However, it is noticeably brighter than when you were hitting the single rock on your own.

On a whim, the two of you repeat the action with the two rocks. The crystal almost assumes its full glow, but there is no chime or signal and there glow rapidly fades once more.

You are sure that the rock will break with one more strike of your pickaxe.

"The stones are connected to the crystals like the Slimes were," you let out a weary sigh, "but I'm not exactly sure what the room wants us to do, Jamie. Should we just break all the rocks and hope for the best?"

Jamie looks over the three rocks, then to the crystals, and then to the pickaxe in your hands.

"Can we break them all at the same time?"

You give Jamie a questioning look. "How would we-" you begin, but then it occurs to you that if the rock that you've been punishing is connected to the timer on the wall then time is obviously a factor here.

"Okay," you think aloud, "maybe not all at the same time but we could break them all one after another and do it quickly. Light everything up at once before the light can fade, yeah?"

"How fastly can you strike each rock three times?" Jamie asks. "Can I assist you? Do you have a second pickaxe?"

"No, but if I get them all close to breaking... Just watch. I'm going to try something."

>>>>>

You've smacked the additional two rocks two times each and are now standing before the leftmost rock with your pickaxe at the ready. With a deep and steadying breath you raise the pickaxe and bring it down on the rock. A mighty sound echoes out and the rock cracks and splinters, chunks of minerals cascading off.

True to your expectations the chime sounds and the stonework lights up. You ignore that, though, and rush to repeat the action with the other rocks.

At the end of your efforts the whole of the stonework is lit with a brilliant white light... and it isn't fading. A final chime rings out and the crystals simply retain their light.

But the light of the green crystals is finally depleted.

"Jacky? The door is still locked. What should we-"

An ominous gong-like noise comes from the now darkened green crystals. A hissing, gurgling noise emanates from the far corners of the room!

At the doorway the two of you ready yourselves for an initial strike. Your flanks are more secure but Jamie will be unable to use her silvered blade due to its short reach. Still, you can each act in unison like this and only one Slime can reach you at a time now.

The Slime lets out a frustrated, pained cry. It's brethren call back in response but are unable to help as there injured gel rages back and forth, its maw snapping at the air as Jamie attempts to follow up with her own strike. [Good rolls! As long as your Bash is successful the Slime cannot attack in response. While this isn't that useful solo, it makes for a good combo when you are fighting with someone!]

[Bash mastery: 2/5]

You roar and slam your shield into the grotesque face off your enemy. The solid oak and steel round shield ram into the Slime with enough force to disorient it for a few seconds, more than enough for Jamie to lash out at its wobbling form and issue a fatal wound with her sword.

The Slime falls, and the chime issues from the far wall as the light begins to glow once again. Two Slimes are left.

"Jacky!" Calls Jamie breathlessly, "We need to quickly finish them, just as the stones!"

"Makes sense! Let's kill em and keep moving!"

[Lost service for a while. Back now.]
You and Jamie are, eventually, able to slay the Slimes after a rather humiliating battle that will probably never be sung about or relayed as a great story of competence and heroism.

Jamie slashed the second of the Slime trio across the face and managed to splash the slippery green ichor sustaining its shape across the floor. This would fine normally, but the Slime then texted by bull charging her legs in desperation, leaving Jamie with a slippery monster wrapped around her ankles on an already slippery floor. You had to fend off the third creature but you could hear a commotion behind you as Jamie seems to have been tackled to the floor.

You turn for just a moment and, to your dismay, Jamie lay prone on the ground with a skewered Slime flailing above her, hissing and spitting through its dying breaths. That moment of distraction is just enough for the third smile to take advantage of and tackle you in a similar fashion.

You scramble and thrash at the monster on your back, sword and shield proving more a hindrance as the jockeying Slime bites at your shoulder and you try to pry it off.

You cry in pain and your senses are temporarily nulled by the pain. In desperation you drop your gear, reach back and grab the Slime, and proceed to pull it up and over your shoulders.

With a squealing gasp it dies, its head dashed against the ground in your impromptu wrestling finisher.

>>>>

You help Jamie dispatch the last Slime with a well placed stab of your sword. It disappears in the usual inky cloud like its brethren.

The crystals are all lit. The door forward is opened. There is, however, one small issue. Jamie was drenched in the slime and liquids of the Slime as it writhed above her. Her undershirt and silk breeches now stick to her skin under her patchwork armor and jacket.

The jacket that she quickly disposes of because it's "rather soaked and uncomfortable."

She's still good to go but her clothes noticeable stick to her lithe frame in unfortunate places. It's... distracting.

A. Maybe point out she could use a change of clothes
B. Forge onwards!
C. Ask if she's alright. Maybe she can take your jacket?
D. Make light fun of her

[This is an unusual case. There's nothing interesting storywise about punching Slimes over and over again until you kill all of them in rapid succession to beat the timer. If you didn't kill them both quickly the Slimes would have reset. I wanted to move on with the story and illustrate the concept, and I hope you understand. These first five floors are tutorial-like.]

Your eyes dart over Jamie just once more before you look away for both her modesty and your own. You should do your best to forget ever seeing how her pants clung to her round, perfectly-shaped...

"No!" You internally remind yourself. "She is my comrade, and I'm better than this!"

You slap your cheeks a few times. Hopefully that will cover for any redness to your expression.

Jamie, concerned, walks into your view. "Jacky? Are you alright?"

You are once again greeted with the sight her, uh, "form," and a small, slimy part of your mind promises to burn the image of Jamie's pert, sculpted backside into your memory. You find, not for the first time in your life, that you are thankful that a woman can't read your mind.

You have a few seconds before the rest of your mind quickly catches up and chides your brutishness. Still, you're just a man!

That said, the situation is troubling. While her leather armor is fine, Jamie's clothes are likely to get uncomfortable and may even get in the way of her fighting.

"Let's get you a change of clothes, Jamie? We can come back since we're not that deep in the mines, we have blink candles-"

She fixes a stern look at you. "No. I refuse to turn back due to a... wardrobe problem. I'll be fine. I went through much worse after I was mugged on my way to Sunnyvale."

That's quite the shocker. "Mugged?"

"Forget I said anything. That is in the past, yes?" Her expression flashes distaste and anger for a fleeting moment. "Are you ready for floor three?"

You walk along and watch as Jamie leads the way to in silence - only the occasional grumble or whispered complaint floats to your ears, accompanied by Jamie fishing her hand into her wet armor for an adjustment or plucking the seat of her pants from her soaked legs. The sight would be funnier if you weren't traversing a monster-infested dungeon or if Jamie wasn't so obviously upset. She's even offered a few angered, apologetic words on how she "looks so stupid."

[Always Feel free to choose more than one option unless I specify otherwise.]
A. You don't have to always be strong, Jamie
B. What are you taking about? You don't look stupid.
C. Let's head back up top. We can continue later.
D. Ask about the mugging. Take a short break in the stairwell.

You stop Jamie before she opens the next door. Her wrist feels slim under her damp sleeve.

"What are you talking about, Jamie? You don't look stupid. Come on, there's nothing to be upset about. Everything turned out fine, right?"

Jamie's expression dances between embarrassment and defiance.

"Yes, I do look stupid. I seem to be unable to help myself that regard, no? But, perhaps I shouldn't be thinking such things. I obviously can't afford myself any distractions."

She scoffs out a hard, sarcastic laugh. "Tackled by a Slime? Really? I didn't realize I would disappoint so much today, and this is only the third floor."

You try to ease her down. You offer a soft, understanding expression.

"You don't have to always be strong, Jamie. We're here to cover each other. To shore up weaknesses. Heck, I was almost taken down by a Slime too!"

She shakes her head, and her lone eye is turned the floor at her feet. There is no warmth in her gaze. "The weak are cast aside or taken advantage of by the strong, Jacky. A person must strive to be of strong or to be of value, and a woman's value must be earned with her beauty or her brains," her hand goes to her sword, "or demanded. If I do not have strength, then I have nothing. And then my mother would have been right all those times before."

Jamie gently shrugs you off and pushes on the main crystal of the doorway. You stare after her for a moment before walking into the cavernous space yourself. The door shuts behind you.

You find yourself in another dimly lit room, glowing fungi hanging from the ceiling. Like the previous space, this floor is primarily a large, oval-shaped room with little in the way of decoration. The exit lay directly ahead of you. The crystal is blue once again: a challenge room

Jamie strides ahead, sword drawn. The two of you look on carefully but there are no signs of life.

The third floor seems to be empty aside from... a performance stage? It's got spot lights... kinda.

The two of you stare and watch quietly, but nothing happens. Jamie seems overly tense, which is unusual for her. The possibility of monsters and challenges doesn't seem to faze her too much.

What's your next move?

A. Jamie? I think you should talk to someone. I'm here if you need me. (But let the matter sit for now)
B. Try talking to her. You need to make sure Jamie's head is in the right place.
C. Be on the lookout for enemies while Jamie moves forward.
D. Approach the stage yourself.

Jamie? I'm here if you need me, if you need to talk. Do you want to go back to the lodge and talk after this floor?

It's ok if you want a little time to think and not even say a damn word for half an hour and just stare into a cup of tea and try to sum up all your thoughts. I'll be there to listen if you want me to.

And for what it's worth, i shouldn't have left like that the other day. I'm sorry.
