"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

Cheers for coming, fellas!

First up a refresher seems called for after this hiatus.

Captain ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova
The leader of your merry band of mercenaries, Kiranova is well known for her icy demeanour and ruthless calculation. The two of you share a complicated history, ranging from passionate trysts to attempted murder, leaving you entirely uncertain whether your promotion was some cruel punishment or because you’re one of the few people left in this outfit she trusts.

Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ Hadrien
Your second-in-command of the 7th Kreigstrom Shocktroopers, and by far the most sanguine in the riskier aspects of the job than anyone else you know. Of your fellows from the days you first signed up nearly 11 years ago, ‘Bad Hand’ is the one you’ve spent the toughest times with. He does well in the role of Sergeant, but he has an annoying predilection that your plans don’t turn out quite as smoothly as they could. Because that would be too easy.

Aide-de-Camp Elia ‘Saint’ Von Harti
Once a prominent member of the Knightly order of Heigelen Saints, you rescued her from the Yellow Dogs in the Sarsburg Dungeons. Although her holy powers haven’t worked since she abandoned her fellow prisoners and signed up with the Company to save her skin, she’s well versed in wards and basic anti-magik. She clearly still struggles with the more… ‘practical’ aspects of mercenary work. You’re not entirely sure why you’re so protective of her.

Superior Syka
Crazy younger sister to the Necromancer, she holds a personal grudge against you. Or your alias, 'Corporal Aeron'. While her older brother sticks to the more dignified mysteries of undeath and skeletal minions, Syka's interests lie in the more daemonic realms.

Knight-Taskmaster Pietre Verdun
A supreme swordsmaster apparently dedicated to proving his peerless abilities in the most lethal way possible against the most dangerous available, Pietre Verdun doubles as both your bodyguard and defacto leader of the other Blackguard Caste members. Too well spoken and familiar to just be some guy with a sword; the Chavalisse knight is, like most of your comrades, disinclined to talk about his past.

Subaltern ‘Kid’
Sometimes your conscience gets the better of you and you end of doing something extremely stupid. Like defying a cultist demagogue to halt the execution of a child. The surprisingly savvy newest addition to your crew has made themselves useful, and adapted to life in the Company like a duck to water. You know they can read and write, standard for Neumunster State Orphans, but you’re unsure whether their loss of voice is a birth defect or just a trauma thing. That said, you can’t even be sure whether ‘Kid’ is a boy or a girl. The answer to that question hasn’t bothered you much. Mostly because you've been foisting most of your officer-paperwork on them.

The 7th Kriegstrom Platoon
Comprised of the most well-armed and armoured troops, 7th Platoon offers the meanest, fiercest and, given the mortality rate, dumbest soldiers to be found in the Black Company. A more bizarre collection of fighting men and women has likely never been seen. Down-on-their-luck heroes with a magic swords and brooding pasts like Cairsun; escaped slaves with a penchant for magik like Nissar; disgruntled veterans of the Nuemunster Legions like Coporal ‘Jack’ Marcus; Scarred Wildborn ‘Smiles’ because fighting is really all a Wildborn knows; aging Skald huscarls like Hirstun of Ligh that should have retired long ago. You even have a mute rotten undead warrior, ‘Mask’, which is one even you haven’t heard before.

They’re your men. Mercenaries, that kill for money. Warriors, with the right degree of pride and stubbornness. Soldiers, that fight for the man next to them. You never wanted this position, deciding who dies where. Dark Father knows it’s only a matter of time before you get them all killed.

Recap

A few weeks ago the Black Company took part in the Sack of Sarsburg, the capital of the mighty Neumunster Empire and the greatest city in the entirety of the Free Alliance. The Necromancer, your esteemed employer, wished to have an example made by bringing about the city’s utter destruction with a summoning of the eldritch and terrifying creatures of Below en masse. The fact that you and much of the undead horde including the Company had already made headway into the city seemed not to bother him, or his deranged sister Superior Syker, overmuch.

Through foolhardy heroics, naively helpful Saint-Captain’s and the abandonment of orphans, you managed to salvage much of the Company and find shelter in the Imperial Palace. This is also where you happened to acquire a dragon. While the Unbound, as Page #136 calls him, would object to you calling him “your” dragon, it certainly seems no one else is willing to take responsibility for it.

Fire-breathing lizards are the least of your problems though, because all your hard work and sticking your neck out earned you the attention of your superiors. And they had the fekking gall to promote you to Lieutenant of the 7th. As the Necromancer’s horde spreads out to carve out a new empire out of Neumunster’s failing corpse, you find yourself charged with the capture of the northern town of Kresden as the rest of the Company moves to seize Oxenfurt Bridge far to the south and west.

[Cont]
>>

Which brings you to your current predicament. Sneaking into Kresden was easy enough with the town awash with refugees. The plan was for your 7th Kreigstrom to seize the Main Gate, the 4th Infantry would storm the town watch Barracks, and the Rangers would take the Manor where all the town bigwigs would probably be gathered. While you have seized the Gate the Rangers have somehow ended up with you, leaving the 4th somewhere further in town hopefully making progress. To make matters worse, the town guard have been reinforced by a a Warpack of the ferocious Grenn canids. And you can’t fekking stand dogs since you last encountered Grenn.

Of more immediate concern however is the presence of what could be the heir-apparent to the Neumunster throne cowering behind a magik shield with a Mage and the surviving guards. You’ve already disposed of their adventurer friends, and the mage can’t be anything on the same level as Page #136 or Superior Syker. You’d all be trying to stop your skin sloughing off if that were the case. It looks like that magik barrier is their last ditch effort to keep you and the 7th away from a very valuable hostage.

holy shit this is alive, again.

Always a favorite quest of mine.

Okay, so we want that princeling, I don't trust talking them down or waiting when we're dealing with Heroes, and I don't feel like killing the guards will really help them, they've got bigger fish to protect.

So

>Distract them as Nissar Belhamun readies a spell. [Clever]

Please rolls do not fuck us, fuck people who are not us like that poor unfortunate vampire.
>>
>>840597

> Have Nissar ready a spell while we try to talk them out. Promise the kid and guards will remain unharmed as long as they swear no resistance or escape. If we fail to convince them, Nissar brings the light show.

We're on a timeline. The heir is an HVT, but we can't afford to fuck around forever.

They seem to be pros, or at least well traveled enough to not buy the surrender and nothing bad will happen to the heir or them after we turn him over to the necromancer or whatever is his eventual end. Waiting seems like a bad idea with the wolves and things going to shit. Magic seems the best option, although I'm probably wrong on most of these points. Also hey awesome to see you back!

>"/qst/ will be dead"
Glad to see this activity.

------------------------------------------

You beckon Trooper Nissar Belhamun over as the 7th Kiregstrom and the 2nd Rangers surround the barriers, the occasional hurled insult followed or preceded by a crossbow bolt to test the waters.

“Trooper, I need you to-“

“Na’am, Sadiq-Corporal. We are understanding.”
Trooper Belhamun rubs his fingers together with confidence. “No be of the fear, Sadiq-Corporal, Nissar will provide.”

Taken aback by this surprising leap in comprehension, if not language, you suspiciously regard the Trooper for any lingering signs of possession. Finding none, you nod in affirmation.

“And-uh, it’s ‘Captain’ now, Trooper.”

“As you say, Captain-Corporal.”

Well at least he’s not possessed, you think. No daemon from Below could balls up the common tongue that badly.

>[MIRACLE]

In addition to loving it when a plan comes together, you gain a useful little trinket of the Mage's.

“Ceasefire! Ceasefire!” You yell at the overeager Rangers, their bolts clearly having no effect. The Mage and guards regard you warily, no small amount of sweat dripping down their brows. You have to buy Nissar a little time to work his magik, so you take of your helm to address the foe. Perhaps get their attention with an offer of terms.

”You! Pat Kergin, the lead guard, recognises you as the refugee he let into town earlier that day.

”Yes, yes. Me.” You hand your helmet off to Saint, her face either nervous or shamefaced. Not every day a Holy Knight ends up assisting in the capture of their own liegelord. ”Now, I’m sure you’ve heard some awful things about our Employer’s policy on prisoners but I can assure you-“

”Policy?!? That lover of decay Etraxis has less compassion for human life than the creatures he summons!” The Mage speaks for the first time, clearly enraged. ”I have no intention of finding myself under his tender attentions, even less so for his bitch-sister Syka!”

While calling Syka a bitch does earn him a few points in your book, that’s not what has your attention. You’ve never heard the name Etraxis before, your Employer has only ever been referred to in your earshot as ‘the Necromancer’ or the ever-ominious ‘Him’. That kind of knowledge could be useful, or dangerous…

”Perhaps we got off on the wrong foot he-…”

”FESHNA AKKARAAAAA!!”

You are quite thoroughly interrupted by the sight of two figures leaping off the top of the gatehouse above the shield. The one screaming is clearly Trooper Nissar, his glowing blue hands stretching their energy out over… Cairsun the Morning Light and his sword??

With a resounding CRACK, Cairsun’s already magic blade, now amplified, slams hilt deep into the barrier. The energy of the shield is overloaded instantaneously, the occupants and assailants both sent flying in all directions, slamming into the walls or equally surprised bystanding Kreigstrom.

”Fatima’s First Son could not believe this thing, it worked!”

As Cairsun the Morning Light, a man with the default setting of ‘dour’ as his general demeanour, helps an excitedly-babbling Trooper Nissar up the escaped-slave hugs him enthusiastically, receiving an awkward pat on the back in return. Meanwhile your men surround and disarm the defenders, still stunned and entirely at your mercy.

The boy comes with problems of its own, all political to one degree or another. The guards are easy enough to account for, but nowhere near as valuable. A mage has value of its own, especially to your employer, but it's a dangerous proposition to keep one captive.

I'm not sure if you missed the last thread, but your plan to take over the town is already underway and the alarm was going off when you assaulted the main gate.

Prisoner guards does pose a problem, but I don't think laying low is an issue anymore.
>>
>>840934
I'm torn, on one hand mages are awesome, but we already have someone who does well enough (though maybe not great except for now holy crap!). So my prevailing thought is we off him as he will likely be very resistant to turning to our way of thinking/employment. Adventurers are a mixed bag but I'm leaning towards keeping them. We should bring the prince to the big boss lady before deciding to hide or hand him over to our employer. If we keep it somewhat on the down low we can kill him later if the trouble is too much.

“Right lads, tie em up. Gather them over there, don’t go killing anyone unless they squirm.”You pause as Trooper Saint finishes tying the Mage’s hands and pulls him up. ”No. Not that. Corporal Tara take care of him.”
Saint gives you a confused look as Corporal ‘White Bitch’ Tara walks over to her.

”But then what are we sup-Oh Saints!” The ex-Holy Knight looks sick as Cororal ‘White Bitch’ rams a dagger into the dazed Mage’s throat, stumbling back as arterial blood sprays across her boots. She turns to you, looking a little paler than usual.

“Mages make poor prisoners, won’t risk my men for that.” You shrug, feeling oddly guilty given this is nothing new to you. “Besides, you heard him. Fekker said he’d rather die.”

”You want to live long in this outfit?” ‘White Bitch’ Tara gives her best NCO snarl ”Then you better fekking switch the fek on! We don’t fight and die honourably over this shit, arsewipe. We fight and live. THAT is how we operate here, and THAT is how you'll damn well operate as well.”

You don’t get any joy out of seeing your Corporal tear Saint down a peg or two. But you can’t interrupt, even the most fekwit of an officer would know that. Besides, it’s not like you actually disagree with anything ‘White Bitch’ Tara is saying. Your attention is diverted by a tug on your cloak. Having given the still-warm Mage a quick once-over Trooper Kid hands you something, looking mighty proud of themselves.

“What is this? A rock?” You look from the stone back to Trooper Kid quizzically.

“That’s… nice. Are you wounded? Get hit in the head at all?”

Trooper Kid gives an exasperated sigh, almost identical to their reaction when you bludge your paperwork off onto them. One of the redhead Hasselhof twins pauses from liberating a purse from a corpse to chuckle.

“Hey Olly, you hear that? The boss don’t know whassa a Runestone.”

A completely identical Trooper looks up from their own pillaging.

“Well Oliver, it’s a Stone what the Mages use for Magiks when they don’t go spellin everywhere, isn’t it?”

“I know that!” Trooper Oliver Hasselhof’s smirk turns into an indignant frown. “Boss doesn’t, is all.”

“Yes he does, ya idiot.”

“Wot? How?”

“We just told him, didn’t we? Dark Father, if mother knew what looking after you was like…”

Tuning out the constant bickering of the Hasselhof twins you flip the stone over, seeing the carved rune. You have no idea what it says, otherwise you’d be a Mage wouldn’t you? But you know that just carrying it around will have an effect.

“Easy there, soldier. Easy.” Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ has a cautious hand on ‘Murder’ Meriam’s shoulder. The Lance-Corporal is still kneeling over the thoroughly punctured corpse of the Chevalisse Paladin, a bloody knife clenched tight in a trembling hand. Whether the shaking is from nerves or rage you have no idea, ‘Murder’ Meriam isn’t one for emotional outbursts. Or emotion at all really.

The Sergeant looks up at your approach. ”Things were looking a little dicey there, Prince. Could have gone all to Below pretty quick if the Rangers didn’t show up. But weren’t they supposed to be heading for the Manor?”

I can see that you're trying to laugh it off, but also correct their shoddy work. Well done, because that was the effect of the choice.

LT 'Shaftie' Adams would respect you, but the 2nd would continue to be poor Rangers. Or vice versa.

Since you didn't just pick blindly, I'm going to award you both. Seems like LT Prince is picking up the nuances of this officer gig (to his chagrin).
>>
For future use, guys, if we got a Ranger detachment with us, we could probably have them stand off and act as marksmen behind our lines while the Kriegstrom mix it up. Priority to mages and officers, of course.

LT 'Shaftie' Adams respects you AND the 2nd Rangers improve their pathfinding skills.

You will also gain an officer perk for your savvyness sometime later.

----------------------------------

”Eh. These things happen. Worked out for the best in this case.”

LT ‘Shaftie’ beams at your words, thankful to avoid a public reprimand from a fellow officer. The cheery bushy-faced Trooper Godric Golden marches past with a captive in tow. “Lovely evening Lieutenant, where do you want these prisoners?”

Before you can answer Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ snaps into full-NCO mode. ”It’s not an officer’s job to fekking micro-manage your shit, Trooper! You were ordered to secure the prisoners! Despite all evidence to the contrary, it is not beyond your capacity to figure out how!

With that handy distraction you grip LT ‘Shaftie’ by the arm, letting a little of the menace of your Blackthorn armour seep through.

”You’re a Ranger, Lieutenant. It all turned out fine tonight, but next time your mistake could mean dead brothers. If that happens then Dark Father knows that if I don’t bury you, the Captain will.”

You release the paling LT and stalk off, he definitely got the message.

The town’s alarm bells are still ringing, though you’re fairly certain that the guards they were meant to rouse are either here, dead or captured, or at the barracks, hopefully dead or captured. That leaves the Grenn, and they could be anywhere in town by now.

“Corporal Hirstun, where would the Grenn be lurking about if an alarm goes off?”

”Grenn don’t lurk if there’s a fight to be had.” The venerable Huscarl snorts ”On a full moon they’d tend to gather all at once then go blood-crazy, hunting down anything that moves as one ravenous pack. …Which would probably be most of the refugees on the streets if we weren’t around.”

You chuck a nervous glance at the cloudy night sky.

”Tonight isn’t a full moon is it?”

”Er… no. No, I don’t think so. Probably not.” Not the confident denial you hoped for.

”Right then, were to next?” Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ says, failing utterly to hide his eagerness at testing the mettle of the Grenn.

I just want to say guys that I am very touched to see so many regulars (from what I can tell) so far. I would like to thank you for coming back even after the lapse in threads.

>Support the 4th infantry at the barracks, IF we believe the bulk of the guard have not died here. Otherwise, push on the manor.

4th is expecting us, so bailing on them could cost us the unit. However, if Grenn are about, splitting off the Rangers is bad (could be ambushed and killed), so we would all head to the barracks. HOWEVER, (again) a key objective is to secure the local leadership. If we think 4th has got it, push on the manor.

I agree to this, though we should remember that we've got the FLRE. Basically if shit goes bad and we're bogged down in Grenn and soldiers we can still use that, aimed at the Manor and we should be able to call down dragon to take that shit out.
That would accomplish our final objective: taking out the leadership and their guards. It should also have the additional effect of breaking the morale of any non-Grenn that might still be fighting us because we'd have just nuked their city with a dragon, and that's not something they'll be willing to fight against.

So yeah, 4th gives everyone the highest chance of survival, but it also basically guarantees we will have to fight the Grenn, but we would be able to fight them at optimal strength in this situation. It does mean hitting the town with the dragon is very, very likely to be required, meaning it ain't gonna be taken in perfect shape, but part or most of a town burned down after the ensuing fire is still better than the usual necromancer treatment.

Plus if the Grenn are as bad as our PTSD self thinks, then god damn we want everyone together or our units could get ripped to shreds while apart. Plus with 3 different units together we'd be able to fight them at more of our own pace.
>>
>>841357

This raises an interesting question: if the Grenn are here in force, why not just fast-forward to torching the manor and unite with the 4th?

Pros: Less dead brothers. Breaks morale. Cooooool.

Cons: Less loot. Burning the town means less warm inns to commandeer for a barracks. Boss might be somewhat mad (probably only a little). Busty tavern wenches (even naive ones) turned off by scaly flying blowtorches. Left to the tender mercies of the White Bitch.
>>
>>841366

It also brings up a question: Usually A lord's manor is segregated from the rest of the town by a good bit of distance and a wall. So even though the FLRE will have a good deal of spillover, most of it shouldn't hit the town major and be mostly contained in the manor area, not really spreading due to not being a long series of connected wooden houses.
Town will still catch fire, but it should actually be less fire than normal. Like we probably won't have to worry about burning to death while fighting the Grenn. Much.

Actually if they're dogmen and we fought them in snowy areas, they probably hate the fire, it might make them fuck off a little faster than otherwise.

Also having the words tender and mercy in the same sentence as White Bitch is always funny.
>>
>>841375

I'm kinda wanting to fight the Grenn a little, just so Prince can be afraid, face his fears, get MAD, snap two necks of theirs, one in each hand, then out-roar the dragon, who swoops overhead at that moment, scattering the Grenn, and ending with him standing on top of a pile of bodies, bloody sword held high. In short, character development and rule of cool.

”The plan was to take the manor and leave the barracks to the 4th. But the Grenn weren’t part of the plan. Lieutenant ‘Hawk’ will be in for a nasty surprise without us to back him up.”

Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ nods. ”So. Barracks?”

”Barracks.”

A fierce grin dances across your 2IC’s face. The boisterous warrior leaps to his feet, brandishing his sword in the air. Barking orders and bad jokes, the mad fool. You pat the FLRE at your side, a get out of gaol free card. You hope so anyway, ASGORGA isn’t the most co-operative of creatures.

”Kriegstrom to the fore! 1st Squad on me, screen duty! Rangers to the rear, if I get a bolt in the arse I will personally face-fek each and every one of you! Let’s move, you bastards!”

Within a few moments your host is marching into town in good order, eyes peeled for dangers. Worried faces peer out of windows, screens quickly covered and hatches battened down in your approach. Those refugees from the countryside unfortunate enough not to find four walls and a locked door huddle in the alleyways, eyes wide at the glinted steel, grim faces and timed steps of the Company brothers and sisters.

You yourself cut a striking figure. Your intimidating Blackthorn armour makes you loom over the troops in the dark, your Cloak of Command billowing behind you dramatically despite a lack of real wind.

And all the while you spare an occasional glance at the skies, hoping against a full moon.

”Um…boss?” Trooper Caroline Schuster whispers nervously at your side, staring up at the clearing clouds.

”Yes, Trooper Schuster?”

”Why is the moon all red-like?”

”What are you talki- Oh.” Dark fekking Father damn this to Below. That can not be good.

”That can not be good.” Knight-Taskmaster Pietre Verdun mutters.

”Indeed. De odds off a huud hoon hood he hethicely one in sree-tousand.” Trooper ‘Smiles’ gasps, his ruined face making talk difficult. Not that anyone would be stupid enough to tease a Wildborn over a speech-impediment.

With some relief you see the 4th Infantry up ahead, looking like they’re finishing up at the Barracks. From the looks of it they came off pretty light, most of the corpses and prisoners look half-dressed.

HAAK-Ptoo Prince, Shafite. Good to see you.” The aging Lieutenant ‘Hawk’ looks up from conferring with his sergeant at your arrival, taking note of the Ranger’s presence.

”We’ve got things wrapped up here, only a few of ours in the mud. The Manor already ours then?”

”Not yet, we’ll be heading there n-“ LT ‘Shafties’ words are halted by the sound of a single, piercing howl…

And then what sounds like hundreds, no thousands more join in. They’re surrounding you from the sound of it, around every corner! On every roof! Behind every door and window! The fear hits you, the sickening terror that brings you all the way back to the Northern Coast. Dreams of their howling, the growls in the night too close for comfort. Nipping at your heels as you run, fangs sinking into your skin, tearing out your guts and eating you alive. You only stop screaming when they reach your throat. Your nightmares could very soon become a reality.

Oh, Dark Father you despair, why did it have to be Grenn?

>[COMMAND RETAINED!]
>[CYNOPHOBIA STILL ACTIVE! -10DC In combat against Canid foes. And you still don’t like pet dogs either.]

You clench your fist to stop your hand from shaking. You may be pissing your pants, nearly literally, but you’ll dive headfirst into Below before you let your men or the enemy see that.

Shadows flit across rooftops, ravenous snarls in the dark. The narrow streets of Kresden are well suited to the Grenn, not too different in practice from the crags and pines they naturally stalk. You can see them on either end of the street now, dozens of them silently standing there. Where other foes might gaze at you with hatred or determination these eyes look… hungry.

Armed with axes and painted shields you can’t make out much in the way of armour, or clothes. But each of them stands nearly a head taller than a man, and with rippling muscles and sharpened claws to boot. Already the Rangers are busy firing off bolts to keep those on the rooftops jumping down straight on top of you.

Thank the Dark Father for that, otherwise you’d be in a real mess. As if this wasn’t bad enough. Everyone’s looking properly spooked, time to say something officery.

Hell we have killed supply officers with more bark than them. Well, at least something in his office closet had more bark than the Grenn.

>Lance-Corporal ‘Auntie’ Goodkind [Deceased]
>Corporal ‘White Bitch’ Tara [Walking Wounded]
>Trooper Oliver Hasselhoff [Maimed]

The crowded close quarters of the streets are well suited to the Grenn. You can feel the press of the line tilt back a few paces as man and wolf hack and claw away at each other. Rangers and Infantrymen fall as well, and some Grenn succumb to blade and bolt. But too damn few.

Lance-Corporal ‘Auntie’ Goodkind, an old veteran and mother-figure of the Company since before you even joined, pitches forward limply, so much of her throat missing that her head is left barely attached.

”Olly! Olly! Eurg-he’s eating me Olly! Pleasebrother, make him stop!” Oliver Hasselhoff sobs as his twin brother desperately strains against a mottled Grenn set on chewing the rest of his leg off.

The Alpha is at the fore, making a beeline straight towards you. With almost contemptuous ease he swings his axe into Corporal ‘White Bitch’ Tara, the air rushing out of her in a pained gasp as her vambrace crumbles. The Alpha barks at you in his guttural language.

”Hisorta! Hisorta! Felden varys Hekendebunda!” . To your surprise it seems to be a bastardization of the Black Tongue. ”Grev Messen Suttun Felden Alpharic!"

”Defy You! Defy You! Manflesh tastes of coward! Want taste southern man leader!”

No, it's too risky. A dragon in these confined quarters will roast you all, Grenn and Man alike. Below it, you're going to have to take this dog on by yourself.

"Pietre! You grimace. "Clear us a path to that big fekker over there!

"With pleasure, mon ami!" The Chevalisse Swordmaster dances in between grasping claws and axe-swipe, severing tendons and piercing lungs with precision. You’re no damn fool, man overcame wolf because of his brain not brawn. The Alpha is quick to press the attack, seeking to establish dominance, but you cautiously fend off every blow. A sidestep here, a parry there, a rather ungraceful dodge when needed. You move quickly, but not as quickly as you can, giving the Grenn the impression of a slower, clumsier fighter than the truth. The Alpha quickly loses its patience, leaping at you with claws outstretched, axe forgotten.

You duck, spinning about with a sudden swiftness that takes the Alpha by surprise, scoring a telling wounded across it’s side. The beast howls in fury at your impertinence.

>Trooper 'Bitten' Dan [Maimed]
>Black Company Lost 1 Discipline! [3/6]

-------------------------------------

“Hold, Father-fekking-damnit, Hold!” Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ shouts furiously between his bouts of mad laughter. ”I swear if I have t-Ouch! You motherfekker! Come here you mutt, come here!”

If you weren’t locked in your own struggle to the death perhaps you might have noticed some of many acts of small heroism and petty cowardice lost in the melee.

Saint and White Bitch have finally helped Olly with his brother, the poor ginger twin staring in shock at his eviscerated leg.

A Ranger crawls away weeping from a stranded comrade as an Infantryman risks his life to step forward and carry him back. Another Ranger leans forward for a better shot, only to be lifted screaming to the rooftops by an furred outstretched claw.

Trooper Nissar and Cairsun fight back to back, Enchanted Blade and Magik Hands met with sharpened fang, claw and axe. Trooper Kid struggles to continue holding the Black Banner upright as he struggles to drag a profusely bleeding Trooper ‘Bitten’ Dan, a soldier that looks more like he was chewed up and spat out than simply bitten, away from the fighting.

The line buckles under the press of the snarling moon-mad creatures, but it holds. For every brother that goes down screaming a Grenn is sent yelping back from the fray as well. You’re matching them, flesh-for-flesh and with they don’t have the numbers to back that up. Your lads are dying around you but bless their stubborn stars, they're holding! But if the line falters, if they carve a hole and break your ranks… well it won’t matter much.

> 12 Damage Inflicted! [13/30]
>Allgrenn is Wounded!
>Grenn affected by Boomstick!

A White-furred Grenn shoves into Pietre Verdun, trying to sink his fangs into throat. The swordmaster quickly regains his foothold to meet this threat, and you find yourself facing the Alpha alone.

The Alpha’s piercing red eyes refuse to blink as he prowls side-to-side, you find yourself unnerved by the certainty that they had started out a different colour a few moments ago. He knows you’ve been pretending, playing down your strength. It may have worked once, but he has your measure now.

Or at least he thinks he does.

*KRAKOW*

You draw your Ajiyimad Pistol and fire into the beast point-blank, eliciting a howl equal parts, fury pain and surprise. You leap forward with your Two-Handed Blade, aiming to finish him off quickly. You score several grievous blows, wounds that would kill or cripple any man.

But Grenn are not men. The Alpha’s claw rakes across your visor as he shoves you back, snarling. He’s angrier than ever, but for the first time you see the glint of uncertainty in those bloodshot eyes.

The introduction to the wonders of manmade technology may have shaken the Alpha, and not a few Grenn also recoil at the blast.

>Pietre Verdun [DECEASED]
>Black Company Lost 1 Discipline! [2/6]
>Grenn Lost 2 Discipline! [1/6]

Those Grenn startled by the demonstration of civilization quickly recover, but for a telling amount that moment of hesitation is fatal. Hides are opened and furred limbs are hacked off in a few short seconds by soldiers all too willing to capitalise on their momentary weakness, felling several of the beasts.
For the first time the line surges forward, gaps are closed and uncertain yips join the aggressive growls. But it all hangs on a knife’s edge. One way or another the next few moments will tell.

The White-maned Grenn was one of the few not distracted by the blast, never letting up against Pietre Verdun for a moment. The Chevallise Swordsmaster still obviously has the upper hand though, controlling the Grenn’s movements and forcing him to misstep. The two are locked in a fierce struggle, and the unbeaten Pietre Verdun looks set on remaining undefeated.

But this isn’t a duel, it’s a battle. And random, stupid things happen in battle. You don’t see what did it, a backswing from a hard-pressed Kriegstrom, a random bolt from a poorly aimed crossbow, or an Infantryman’s lance turned at just the wrong angle at just the wrong time. Or maybe it was just an opportunistic swipe of a passing Grenn’s axe. All you see is the Knight-Taskmaster slump suddenly, like some bored puppetmaster had cut his strings. The startled white-maned Grenn sniffs his corpse suspiciously, then lopes away in search of his next foe.

It's pretty late where I am right now, and things are obviously slowing down. I'm more than happy to pick things up and conclude this 12 hours from now after a bit of rest. This is also the first time we've seen actual deaths from the troopers under your command. I don't doubt that Prince will be haunted by that in the future.

We'll call it here and I'll hopefully see you lads for the end of the Battle of the Blood Moon.

>You’ve never heard the name Etraxis before, your Employer has only ever been referred to in your earshot as ‘the Necromancer’ or the ever-ominious ‘Him’.

so this is late as fuck but do some of the rules of magic follow the black company book series? such as knowing the actual name of a magic user being a HUGE fucking deal and magic users go to some serious lengths to hide their true name?
if so that now dead mage may have just name dropped our bosses true name. we might want to remember that for later
>>
>>842440
>if so that now dead mage may have just name dropped our bosses true name
More likely part of it, or maybe an alias.
But still, it would be a lead, should we want to have some insurance against getting fucked over by him. Even if it is not his true name, it may be enough to find about his past, when he may still have used it.
>>
>>841840
Hot damn, glad to see you back boss.
>>
This could actually go really badly for us. We lost Verdun, who was one of the few that could hands down beat us in a fight. On top of that, morale is getting shitty.

I guess it could be worse considering this was basically a sneak attack, but still, fuck man.
>>
>>842512
It's why we gotta kill the allgrenn this turn. If not we break and shit goes to hell.
>>
>>842467
even though the mage and the rest of his adventuring party got put down like punks, they were guarding the heir of the empire we helped burn to the ground so what he said probably carries a bit of weight

also we were not the only ones to hear him say the name so who ever is left alive after this fight (looking like its gonna be a short list seeing how things are going now) we might want to encourage them to forget what he said for now.

rip Verdun I liked him.

Thinking about it, the best course of action might be to use the boomstick and then stand firm.

Fact is that even with 2x damage, we don't have that good a shot of killing the allgrenn.
Our morale is at 2, their morale is at 1.
If we can not get fucked up in this round of combat, they break.

Boomstick give us the effect boomstick, giving us 4d100 instead of 3d100, meaning our chance of 2 success goes way up. Not to mention the +30DC will negate the -10 from ordering stand firm, which will help with the casualty threshold and morale problem.
It'll give us the best chance of winning the round of combat and having our troops stay orderly while the Grenn break.
If the Grenn break then we win.

A morale victory is probably the best way of ending this fight now.
>>
>>843091
Actually I forgot about Mark of Caine.

> Use Ajiyimad Pistol (+30DC)
> Sidewinder Wingshark (+1 Damage, +5DC)
>Stand Firm!
>Use My Blood For His (-2 HP, +10 DC)
>You're not so tough, mutt. Don't use FLRE.

Going off this,
We're looking at +35DC (-10 from cynophobia but +10 from the mark of caine)
If the attack connects, we do triple damage, nearly guaranteeing a kill.
But this gives us the maximum bonuses to our combat and our allies to give the highest shot at our guys staying alive and not breaking while killing the allgrenn.

We could get rid of stand firm for a +45DC modifier, but the order could really help if killing the allgrenn happens simultaneously with the rest of the combat or afterwards.

Killing the Allgrenn this turn would provide a substantial bonus to the next (and one way or another the last) battle phase, but it would not alone grant you victory. The same is true for the opposite, the Battle is only over when both the battle phase and the combat phase are concluded.

>>842538
>>842467
It's a lead rather than a full name-drop.But in a world where it's possible to ensure your own crazy sister doesn't even know your real name, it could be a promising one.

Furthermore, while Necromancy and other Magik depends a lot on the power of the user, Wards (like Saint is trained in) and dealings with Below rely on the inherent power in objects or living things (such as blood). So Syka could, with enough sacrifices and rituals, achieve quite a lot even if her true name was widely known.

Looks like a few people are up now. I have a few errands to run but in the meantime let's get this vote out of the way for combat.

The Alpha grasps the gaping bullethole in his gut with a grimace.

"Urgh. Suttun Felden varys Bekkershek. Etun. Morta hun."

"Urgh. Southern man taste of tricks. Enough. Die now."

The dark-maned Alpha's mouth is frothing at this point, the exertion and numerous wounds taking it's toll. The battle has only been underway for a few minutes, but you feel like you've been fighting all day. The adrenaline isn't giving you the same frantic speed and alertness as before. On the plus side, you're not quite as scared as you were before. You're too damn tired to be properly scared.

The towering Allgrenn’s rancid breath steams into your visor, both of you struggling in a distinctly ungraceful dance to the death. Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ would later tell you, and everyone else, it looked like the two of you couldn’t decided whether to kiss or kill each other.

”Suttun Felden Hekendebunda.” The Grenn Alpha snarls as he swings his axe back for a powerful blow. ”Grev Messen Forca! Grev Messen Felden Kinsen!”
”Southern Man coward-tricks. Want taste your face! Want taste your Man Brothers!”

The icy churning in your guts is overtaken by a sudden hot stab of rage. If not for this damn dog your men would have taken this town without losing anyone. Well, anyone of yours anyway. Instead you’re surrounded by the corpses of your brothers and sisters, and if this mutt has his way the Grenn will be feasting on the wounded given half a chance.

”Taste my brothers will you? Kill my men and eat my fekking face will you!?!” You grip the descending paw in an iron vice, eliciting a yip of pain from Allgrenn. ”I’ll give you a TASTE you furry mongrel! I’ll give you a taste you won’t fekking forget!”

The Alpha’s eyes widen in shock at your use of the black tongue, before yelping in agony as you carve his axe-hand off clean at the elbow. Before he can recover you bring your Two-Handed Zweihander up, before bringing it crashing it down again with lethal force.

”I!”

*THWACK*

”Will wear you!”

*CRUNCH*

”As a fekking pelt!”

*SHUNK*

The nearby Grenn look in horror at the black-armoured warrior standing victorious over their leader’s desiccated corpse.

Dang it.

-----------------------

The towering Allgrenn’s rancid breath steams into your visor, both of you struggling in a distinctly ungraceful dance to the death. Sergeant ‘Bad Hand’ would later tell you, and everyone else, it looked like the two of you couldn’t decided whether to kiss or kill each other.

”Suttun Felden Hekendebunda.” The Grenn Alpha snarls as he swings his axe back for a powerful blow. ”Grev Messen Forca! Grev Messen Felden Kinsen!”

[”Southern Man coward-tricks. Want taste your face! Want taste your Man Brothers!”]

The churning in your guts is overtaken by a sudden stab of rage.

3 Dead
2 Maimed
1 Scratch/Scar

You’re not quite calm, there’s too much of their smell lingering in the air, but you no longer feel the same bowel-loosening terror you did before. You faced your fears, and you nearly died but that just goes to show… well it shows something, right?
The Grenn left behind plenty of corpses, theirs and yours, and the screams of the wounded can be heard clearly now. Half a dozen dead or soon-to-be-that-way Infantrymen, twice that number in rangers. And your own 7th didn’t go unscathed either. Corporal ‘White Bitch’ Tara was lucky. A fractured arm and broken wrist is small change compared to the price others paid.
Trooper ‘Bitten’ Dan and Oliver Hasselhof both lost a leg in the fighting. The same leg at that. Neither of them will march with the 7th again, and Oliver will be lucky not to bleed out by night’s end. You can’t tell which is redder right now, the bloodmoon sky or this Father-forsaken street. The Black Company takes care of their own, those two will get a spot in Supply or some other support role… but lacking experimental magik that no one has the coin or guts for, they’ll never walk again without crutches.
You didn’t see when Trooper ‘Unhappy Sam’ when down, no one did. There’s barely enough left of his corpse to identify him. Funny, you barely remember saying more than two words to him. You knew the name was ironic, his mates described him as a cheery fellow that wouldn’t stop looking on the bright side of things. You never really knew him, but his life and his death are still on you. This is exactly why you never wanted to be an officer.

Sergeant 'Bad Hand' laughs with elation for a little while, happy at a good fight, happy with the victory. Just happy with blood on his hands, probably. Soon enough even his spirits are, if not dampened, then doused slightly by the sounds of brothers screaming in pain or deathly silent. He joins you at the all-too-long row of Company dead. No one has had time to cover some of the more glaring wounds with cloth or anything.

"Prince. The men are turning out the townspeople, rousing anyone with any sort of medical experience. Or clean sheets."

"Good."

'Bad Hand's mustache twitches uncomfortably "You know what the contract says about the corpses. Any corpses."

"I don't see any cultists around here, do you?"

Course not. But they'll know we took casualties sooner or later, and we can't keep dressing up the enemy like we have so far."

The Battle Under the Bloody Moon
Black Company Victory!

After seeing their Alpha struck down, the fight quickly goes out of the rest of the Grenn. A few more too slow or injured to depart quickly are cut down by blade or bolt as the rest flee.
Soon they’re gone, the yips and pained whining trailing off into the town. You don’t doubt the survivors will vacate the town, scaling walls and rooftops seemed easy enough for their kind, and they didn’t seem keen for a second round sometime in the future. With the immediate danger gone a ragged cheer goes up, borne more from relief than victory. But there is some elation there, even if that elation is mainly over the fact that they’re not dead.

But there is a bitter taste your mouth all the same.

‘Auntie’ GoodKind. No one saw that coming. You thought the motherly old bint would outlive you all, and tell you off because of it. She was always the most patient with the new recruits, helping out in little ways that other NCOs wouldn’t or couldn’t. Hot soup ready around the fire, tales of old comrades forgotten by everyone except her and the Archivist. No more soup, no more stories.

And then there’s your Knight-Taskmaster. Pietre Verdun, a damn fine swordsman and a damn proud son of a bitch. He wasn’t the friendliest of your men, nor the most polite or charitable, but no one doubted he was the one you’d want at your side in a fight if only because he was so damn good. Trooper Caroline Schuster is looking over the body, a small wound at the base of the skull. It was quick then at least.

"No." You say with a cold steel that has even 'Bad Hand' taking a step back. "These are -my- men dammit. The Necromancer can get his corpses elsewhere."

Your Sergeant nods slowly. He may not share your sentimentality over the fallen, to him when you're dead you're. How your body is treated is inconsequential. But he respects your rank, and he respects you.

"As you say, Lieutenant. I'll make the arrangements."

The burned-half of Schuster’s face regards you as you approach, Pietre's body. ”Could have been anything what did it, boss.”

”Arr, such a wee wound.” Trooper Vendis Durvano has is helm over his chest , the rest of 2nd squad nodding as they gather round. “There’s barely a jot of blood.”

”Here hwas hvery hlow hrobability ob hith detheat.” The Wildborn’s permanent leering grin would look mocking if you didn’t know it was just how his face is now.

”We’ve all seen him fight.” Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus scowls. ”Nobody would think he could be beaten.”

”Fisberek. I think not that this man could be dying.” Trooper Nissar Belhamun rubs his face with his hands in a slow motion and looks to the heavens for reassurance, but only the Blood Red Moon looks back.

The rest of your command retinue are also at your side; Saint, mouthing a silent prayer to a God you doubt even she believes in; and Kid, covered waist down in blood that isn’t theirs, looks up at you as if asking a question.

Does anyone have a decent pic of a white-furred wolfman? Inb4 Geralt.

”A quick clean death. More than most of us could ask for.” It sounds like hollow horseshift to you, but the others nod and mutter in agreement like you’ve delivered some sage wisdom. Maybe that’s what being an officer is all about, playing the fraud good enough to make the others deal with things like this.

”Hrrrk.” Your words seem to resonate particularly well with Mask. Though he would be biased on that count.

”Woah! Who the FEK missed this one here!” Corporal ‘White Bitch’ Tara sits up with a wince, pointing at the White-maned Grenn sniffing plaintively over the Alpha’s corpse.

Within moments the wolfman is surrounded by a ring of halberds, blades and drawn crossbows wielded by startled Troopers. You come to the fore, ready to signal it’s swift execution. This must be the same bastard that was fighting Pietre Verdun from before.

”Wait! Wait!” The venerable Corporal Hirstun of Ligh bellows. ”Lieutenant! This one wants to talk to you.”

The Grenn regards you coolly, seemingly unfazed by the prospect of imminent death. He doesn’t bear any visible wounds, but it’s clear that his next sorrowful words pain him to speak immensely.

”Sutten Felden Kar-Karta Siro Allgrenn. Is Siro. Is Helden Sutten Felden Tira.”

”Southern man triumphed over father Allgrenn. My sire. I belong to Southern man now.”

”He says-“

”I hear him, Corporal.” You interrupt. ”Is what it says true?”

”Er- yes.” Hirstun seems surprised you speak their language. “I mean, it’s their way. When one pack beats another any offspring sired by their Alpha generally go over to the other pack.”

-------------------------------------

>”No, thank. In case you haven’t noticed, I’m not a fan of dogs.” Give the kill order. [Clever]

Lurking, just managed to catch up on the archive. I'll drop my 2 cents.

>1
Get Back in the Fight!
It'll help since it's much more versatile than Stand Firm! It also combos well, Stand Firm then Get Back. I'm sad the tier three skills were nerfed so hard. More on that later.
Steel Brothers
Bonuses are never a bad thing, especially permanent ones such as this.

>2
Curfews, lots of curfews. Also searches of every home for weapons, but no looting. At least not until reinforcements get here, who knows how many people are in the town.

>3
Bit jarring, since IIRC the only other person to have been wounded in the entire quest other than us was Smiles.

I also don't really think that the new wounding system is all that balanced from a gameplay perspective, a couple unlucky rolls and half our guys are dead or will never be able to fight again and there's nothing we can do about it other than hope to be lucky. Especially since anons chose the objectively worse choice earlier (a full HP bar for someone else, even us, vs +1 health a round, if the casualty helper choice on the stone fixed maiming.)

It is thematic though, and any system change will be a tradeoff between that and more controllable gameplay. I'm fine with permadeath and pseudo-permadeath maiming, but from a purely player perspective I'd like to be able to do something about it other than hope the dice gods are merciful since Tier 3 Officer skills no longer help casualties, if they could even help maiming. Something along the lines of the Look Out, Sir! Rule in 40k? Trading some faceless mooks and maybe a small, temporary debuff for named characters?

I'd keep the current system for a while though, see how it plays out. This was a pretty brutal combat with the enemy having +8 over our guys, so any view will be stilted. You could run a simulated combat against

>4
"At least someone knows what they're doing.

I think the death and maiming system is not good from a gameplay perspective, but I like the how it's thematic.

>1.
You would need a point in Onwards! before you can take Get Back in the Fight.

>3.
We're reaching to the point where I'll have to look at creating Tier 4 abilities.

So a perhaps a high-level casualty that decreases casualty numbers/severity and a high-level Kreigstrom or Blackguard ability that could retroactively cure one casualty in return for a large chunk of HP. I'm liking the idea of a Look Out Sir! or something similar.

>>845357
And things were looking so good with a crit straight off the bat.
>>
>>845357
I know, going through the archive it was ridiculous how many times you critfailed. I'm surprised no one said "can we not do this again?"

I mean, luck of the die and all, but at some point you gotta just stop and say enough. My friend stopped going to pathfinder games with her family because she got screwed by dice rolls near the beginning of combat for like 3 weeks straight and literally just sat there for hours on end doing nothing. Apparently it was sort of official and they just wouldn't compromise on the rules.

The one that sticks on in my mind is when the entire party failed perception rolls and got ambushed by animated statues controlled by a gorgon. The statues surrounded her mage on all sides but one, one statue knocked her down, and another pushed her so every statue got attacks of opportunity and she just died. On turn one. She said the combat went on for another 2 hours or so.

>>845369

>>845369
Ooh, just had a thought. Give us the option to hire a doctor/doctors that can decrease the level of a wound other than death, since the Look Out, Sir! would fill that roll and also you can't really "cure" death. The doctors can reduce the severity of a wound by one level, so crippling maiming goes to severe wound, etc. and they can only do that for a certain amount of wounds per batch.
>>
Dark Father, I missed this quest...
>>
>>845377
I do think the roll system needs to be worked on a bit for rolls that we can't affect in any way.

Like take the bloodmoon roll.
It was a 40% of success per roll, getting a non-full moon is like 30% or something, meaning that we get these situations where getting fucked is very likely and completely out of our hands and cause shit to go way, way bad just cause of bad luck.
>>
>>845415
but thats part of the fun
fucked up shit is going to happen and it keeps hand hand happy
>>845412
lest you have somethign ot read sucks that you missed it
>>
>>845415
I will admit that it is pretty difficult, but that's no more difficult than a DC of 30 on a roll-lower system, or DC 70 on a roll higher. "You're fucked" situations are never enjoyable though. The Bloodmoon's because of the double 44s though.

>>
>>845425
not quite, because most of the systems are best of 3, not # of success based.
The issue is that when it's just shit that's 100% out of our control, it feels kind of bad.

Like it'd have been fine if it had JUST been a fullmoon, no roll.
The issue with rolling right now is that the rate shit goes 100% off the rails bad is much higher than the rate things just go decently okay.
Critical failure and normal failure rates are much higher than any sort of success when we can't do bonuses.
Hell we have to basically spam our blood for his on our own rolls and we still fuck those up a ton.
Rolls are weighted extraordinarily heavily toward failure, which gets old. Having failure is good, but the fact is it's not weighted well for the ordinary circumstance.

Shit like making white bitch wet is very much the exception, not the rule.
>>
>>845396
Not a bad notion, keep a lookout for a doctor character then. Or a healer through other less traditional means.

>>845415
>I do think the roll system needs to be worked on a bit for rolls that we can't affect in any way.
In my defence the Full Moon roll was also to see how the 4th Infantry had fared according to your plan. Had it been two normal failures they would have suffered a few more casualties, meaning you wouldn't have benefited from the Superior Numbers (+5) against the Grenn. But since it was a double, and we have a history of special things happening in this quest on doubles, I decided to leave the 4th relatively unscathed in favour of a more dramatic result.

>>845448
>Like it'd have been fine if it had JUST been a fullmoon, no roll.

Be honest mate, declarations of shenanigans would have been inbound.

>The issue with rolling right now is that the rate shit goes 100% off the rails bad is much higher than the rate things just go decently okay.
>Rolls are weighted extraordinarily heavily toward failure, which gets old. Having failure is good, but the fact is it's not weighted well for the ordinary circumstance.

Well I'm going to have to disagree with you here. I've seen plenty of quests where the MC has been completely knocked out during combat more than once. Not only have you won every single battle and combat so far, until now you've won by miles not even taking any casualties.

Things going 'decently okay' is supposed to be the best you can hope for when you pit non-heroic mortal men against daemons, undead and monsters. I honestly don't know what you'd be looking for in a better outcome.
>>
>>845492
It's not the combat rolls, those are fine. The thing is with combat rolls are basically 'spam everything to keep the DC as high as possible and end it as fast as possible with 2x damage stance"

It's the second that you can't spam -10% hp +10DC, when it's just the flat rolls that it becomes a parade of failures.
>>
>>845492
Personal Combat is fine But anything else is brutal, When you look through the archives can you find a single thread where we have critfailed less than Three times?
>>
>>845520
We are using a new system now. Let's at least test it against in an even fight.

>>845492
Could we do that? Just a test against an equivalent force to see how the new system'll play out in even combat?
>>
>>845507
Looking back at the past threads, 6:6 success:failure for the past 4 threads for non-combat rolls.
This is where failure is 0-1 passing rolls and success is 1-2 passing rolls.

And the thing is it's artificially inflated by a couple 80 or 85 DC's, where any sort of failure is ridiculously unlikely.
These are the rolls we cannot affect and it gets kind of tiring to get shit on for half of all noncombat actions.
>>
>>845524
>test
As in a completely equal, no buffs opponent in personal combat and battle phase?

Sure we can. Not right this second though, I'm cooking dinner for the lads.
>>
>>845535
Yeah, that'll work. Or maybe against a standard group of enemies from an area we're not going to, just to avoid spoilers. Whatever would do the job to simulate a more normal fight best. I'd imagine the Battle of the Mad Furries wouldnt be the standard level of challenge.

I agree that rolls are quite good the way they currently are. We have to make hard choices like using or not using orders to weigh vs personal combat.
>>
Well I hate to bug out before the combat test, especially because I was the one that suggested it, but it's 4:30 and I'm crashing. I'll see how it went in the morning. Hope the balancing goes well.

Also, I had the idea that since there might be doctors around soon, you could also change the wounding system to add a tier between crippling and severe wounds. If we can just hire as many doctors as we want, it'll be necessary to actually make wounds an issue because then the only wounds of note anyone would take are serious, maiming would never be an issue (I'd spam the shit out of those mother fuckers as-is, they'd be super OP.)

If they're just uncommon encounters keeping things as they are would probably be better. Then they'd just be used to make sure soldiers that end up crippled don't stay that way.

Not per se, altough it did seem a tad weird for Pietre (as a "named character", in the sense that he was established) would die so easily was quite drastic I'd say.

2) Find a fucking doctor. Find a mage to help him if we can. Establish order, set sentries, and in the future, teach our son (the Grenn) the fine art of tearing out a throat and see if we have a scout instructor. I kinda like the idea of turning him into a marksman/assassin scout.

3) Permadeath isnt bad - it certainly made me take the quest very seriously. I think the "wounded" table could stand to be nerfed one point away from where it is - while main characters dying is certainly realistic (especially by a lucky shot), I think better storytelling comes from it happening more occasionally than frequently. And if maiming happens too frequently, the Kriegstroms new name with be The Hopalong Legion. A bonus to named characters to make them just a smidge harder to kill seems good.

The Ajiyimad Caliphate: 2 and a half years ago

This whole thing was a damned muddle.

The Priests hated the Nobles reluctance to adhere to their divine advice, the Nobles hated the Priests for their interference in earthly matters. But some Princes were more inclined to the holy words than others, putting them in the Caliph’s pocket, while many Imams were similarly disinclined against the Caliph’s interference, so they sided with the Crown-Prince.

A year of fighting in this sandswept nation and you still couldn’t figure out just who you were fighting for. It’s not like you pale foreigners were welcome in their stores, or their taverns, Not that they have taverns, the locals don't even drink. Crazy.

Fek it. This is what the bloody officers were for. To figure out who you were supposed to be stabbing and then getting Corporal’s like yourself to do the actual job. Given enough time you would have worked yourself into a mental storm, but a teasing, husky voice breaks your reverie.

”You would do a much better job of looking the part of the thoughtful philosopher if you put some clothes on, ‘Prince’.”

You turn at the mocking us of the title; a new nickname, one you can’t imagine will stick. Thoughts of internal scheming and heaving political uproar give way to the much more welcome sight of thin sheets wrapped over a shapely exterior and pale blue hair matted with sweat on a softly rising chest.

“After a lay like that a man has to take stock of his life.” You sit up and stride to the balcony, pale arse catching the moonlight perfectly in your imagination, and sigh dramatically as you lean against the parapet ”Question the universe and all that.”

”Mmmmm, it was pretty good. You can hear the smugness in her voice, but also the exhausted exhilaration. You feel a lift of pure triumph knowing you were responsible. ”That thing… with the tongue? Damn.

”You always did call me a kiss-ass.”

You don’t often hear Lieutenant Kiranova laugh, but when she does it is always worth it. Musical, like a songbird after a particularly exuberant flight. You find yourself wishing she’d laugh more, and longer, as her laughter subdues.

”Really though, what’s bothering you?”

”I’ve been thinking about us.”

”Us?” Lieutenant Kiranova gives you an odd look.

”Yes, us. The Company. Just what are we doing here, Kira?” Strangely the look she had given you before is gone now. Replaced by another one entirely. We haven’t had a stand-up battle in 4 months, but we’ve lost a platoon’s worth of men in that time to random folk with a grudge and a knife.”

[1/3]
>>
>>855052
Kira interrupts you before you can continue your spiel, almost to your relief.

”I’ve also been thinking about us.”

For the first time you think you hear a tremor of trepidation, vulnerability, in the Liuetenant’s voice. You find yourself stiffening, and not in the same way as before. Kiranova didn’t get that name ‘Cutthroat’ for a reputation of timidness. She’s sat up on the sheets, the covers trailing down to reveal a bare breast made hard by the soft breeze. You imagine running your hands over them again, and you find yourself hardening despite the cool air. Some damn fool notion, bringing those sheets out here on the balcony when there was a perfectly good bed inside.

No doubt the ‘stupid pale foreigner’ belief has been well cemented in the mind of the handmaiden standing by the window.

”It’s your job to worry about us.” You say with a wry smirk. ”One of your many officer perks.”

”Idiot. A flicker of annoyance quickly replaces whatever alien expression was there before. ”I’m not talking about the Company. I’m talking about us… whatever this is.
>>
>>855054
[3/3]

You pause in your scrutiny of the handmaiden’s slumping silhouette.

The sudden thumping in your heart is as unexpected as it is alarming. You and Kira have been comrades for some five years now. Five years of surviving hellholes, shivering in the wet for days before pissing yourself with terror and anger for a few minutes at a time. It wasn’t all bad, a lot of it was good. A damn sight better than what your average State Orphan could have hoped for, nights of quiet camaraderie on the road or loud revelry in victory.

The Company didn’t always come out on top, those times were the worst. But those times made the bond with those remaining all the stronger. You and Kira have your fair share of differences, you still haven’t forgiven her for what happened in Sabari… but eventually you stop caring about who shares your bed because, hey fek it, tomorrow one or both of you could be dead. You’d never given a lot of thought to what exactly ‘this’ was, just been glad for the warmth of a willing woman, her tender touch and soft smell. Even if that woman was your boss, and beautiful. The extremely dangerous kind of beautiful.

”Prince…”

You always knew she’d wisen up, stop wasting her time with your sorry arse and break it off. You steel yourself against the inevitable, doing your best not to flinch when she says…

”I love you.”

…what?

”Whatcha?” Not the most intellectual response, but it does accurately convey your current bewildered thought process.
Kira doesn’t say anything, just stares at with the look of a person standing on the precipice. Meanwhile, you hear a clatter inside as one of the other servants drop something. The slumped handmaiden doesn’t stir at the sound.

“I…”

The hesitation is obvious, awkward and awful. You look away, unable to bear the look in her eyes. You look elsewhere, anywhere, desperately trying to think of something to say. A small irrelevant part of your brain notes that the slumped handmaiden has spilt something, what looks like wine appears to be pooling on the floor.

It’s odd that she hasn’t moved to clean it up. And the locals don’t drink wine…

Your eyes widen and you spin around suddenly, Kira gasping as you grasp a knife from a fruit platter. A whistling piece of light spins past you causing you to yell, clutching your ear in pain. The figure cloaked in white steps out calmly onto the balcony, another deadly throwing star ready in her hand.

“Heh, you dumb bitch.” You enter into a knife-fighting stance with an arrogant grin, trying to look as threatening as a naked man can. ”We’ve been expecting you.”

The doors inside bowl open as two dozen armoured Ajiyimad guards loyal to the Crown-Prince, not you a different one, enter shouting alarums. A smile equally smug as yours dances across the silent assassins face. You don’t like that smile one bit. That smile just screams We counted on it. A dozen white-cloaked figures drop from the rooftop onto the armed soldiers and in moments those guards not dead or dying are frantically fighting for their lives.
As another assassin steps out, this one towards Kira, you start to sweat as you realise no one is coming to help you.

The initial combat with the guards is slaughter. The steel of the White Hands carves through their armour like butter. They dance in between ill timed swings of the soldiers, panic making them clumsy. Soon the Guards number is half what it was, and not a single assassin is down.

If the armoured personal guard have offered such little resistance, you can't blame your own combatant for not taking the naked knife-wielding foreigner seriously.

But you're made of sterner stuff than a glorified palace peacock. You dodge the first slash of the dagger, twisting around to grab her other arm in a lock as she attempts to bring a throwing star to bear.

With a practiced grunt you lock the arm and squeeze, eliciting a satisfying click and surprised scream from the assassin. Without compunction you grab the back of her head and slam her skull against the parapet with a sharp crack.

As you bring the fruit knife up to finish the job you turn suddenly, eye to eye with a second White Hand assassin.

The second assassin takes you a lot more seriously. He slashes swings forward with a silver chain in one hand; a feint, but you aren’t drawn in. Another slash easily parried, though you doubt your kitchen knife can stand up to much more punishment.

You suspect the assassin is merely buying time for his mates to finish up in there and help out with the target. They aren’t doing so well now with the surprise worn off, a couple more white-cloaked bodies dot the floor, but that could change quickly. You need to provoke him somehow.

As the first assassin stumbles back up to her feet groggily behind you and idea occurs. Keep your eyes on the second, more conscious, threat at all times you pace steadily backwards. The dazed first assassin looks on confusion, them frightened realization as you casually grab her shirt and forcefully push her over the edge of the balcony.

The second assassin screams in fury, rushing you. Which is exactly what you counted on. You grab his wrist and it swings down, then simultaneously slam your knife into his eye. It doesn’t go in deep enough to kill, blasted cutlery, but by the Dark Father does it make an impression on the assassin. The bastard's scream of fury quickly turns to one of pain, frantically stumbling and clutching his ruined eye, knife still embedded inside. And, unlike his buddy, the other assassins are all to busy to lend a hand.

>Ajiyimad Guards suffered a Disaster! [-3 Discipline, Double Casualties]
>Ajiyimad Guards were Wiped Out! [-1/6]

>Corporal 'Prince' Dealt 5 Damage!
>Brother Ezun was Strangled! [-3/10]

---------------------------------------

You cast an eye over the silver chain the assassin dropped as he claws at his ruin eyed. Unhurried you pick it up, test the weight and walk over to the whimpering assassin. He turns at the sound of your steps too late, and his sobs turn to choked gasps as you tighten the cord around is neck from behind and pull up, hard.

His neck doesn’t break, which is unfortunate for him, instead he dies slowly through asphyxiation. His desperate attempts to grab some hidden piece of weaponry grow weaker, his one good eye goes wider. You flinch a little from a spurt of blood from his ruined eye, not because you’re squeamish, you just don’t want the damn stuff in your eye is all. You’ve been temporarily blinded by blood before, and you’d rather not repeat it. After while the assassin goes limp, slackening in a way you can tell isn’t fake.

You look up, expecting to see more guards pouring in but its deathly quiet. Six white cloaked figures stand over a slaughterhouse in front of you, their soft steps making them appear to glide towards you. Behind you Kira is busy with two more of them, but at least she has her damn sword.

Looking down at the corpse of the White Hand assassin you see something that makes you grin. In his boot, a decent fekking knife.

You draw the blade, appreciating the impossibly keen edge and weightlessness. You ready your stance, a bare-naked mercenary facing off against half a dozen of the deadliest assassins on the continent.

You can’t help but sneer.

>”I’m giving you lot one chance to surrender.” [Elite]

>”Come on then already, it’s freezing out here.” [Experience]

>”Don’t you know I’m the bleeding Prince?” [Clever]

I think that will do it for tonight. This seems to be a decent demonstration that, all things being equal, Prince will come up ahead in personal combat more often than not while the battle in general can easily swing against you. Sometimes dramatically.

I will work on increasing the impetus to use orders. So far we have rarely used them apart from the passive Black Banner, I think I can tweak them to be more attractive. Perhaps being able to issue multiple orders, at an increased DC penalty, should also be introduced.

Did you guys pick up anything from this example? Apart from naked-knife-man and awkward confessions. I tried not to make it too tacky.

Brilliant stuff as always mate!

Brutal - but enthralling.

Really good, as usual. Visceral.

I think the reason some people were so displeased with the system earlier is because there's nothing we can really do to stop casualties, we can roll straight 10s but one 90 and someone's either wounded, dead, or as good as dead since you can't fight without a leg or weapon arm. The same complaints probably would've popped up eventually if you had stuck with the system you had before. The doctors and any potential Look Out, Sir! will fix the issue.

Or you can just go extreme and instead replace the Wound rolls with pseudo personal combat, whoever gets attacked is put into a one round, one sided personal combat with whatever standard enemy they're fighting. Since a named character would usually be more powerful than a rank and file soldier, it won't be TOO worrying unless they roll badly. And guys like Pietre would still fit their character, since regular guys probably wouldn't have much of a chance in hell of actually hurting him.

These are just my ideas though, feel free to take whatever you think's good and drop whatever isn't.

Oh, and sorry I missed the test, you held it at 4 am for me, I couldn't keep myself awake for it.

I like the personal combat thing, although it might get cluttered if we roll shitty in the squad combat phase. Though it's a good idea to differentiate between actual rank and file and named people with certain abilities.
>>

Yeah, that was my big fear. And it might get cluttered on Forgotten's end trying to keep every person's stats straight and up to date.

Regarding orders, how about having a couple of standard like Hold the Line, Flank, Charge, Skirmish and such and give our named soldiers bonuses for certain ones? Experienced front line troops gives the battle portion an extra boost to DC for Holding the Line, while those with a ranger skill-set have bonuses for Skirmish, shock troopers to Charge and so on.

The idea being that we pick our squad based on the kind of encounter we are expecting and to give the rank and file an edge by boosting certain orders, making it easier for us to shape the battle if all goes according to plan. And if not, well, we're fucked aren't we?

Forgotten could also add variable levels of Discipline. So a group of villagers outfitted with the best gear anyone anywhere could get would still be possible to defeat because they would break faster than professionals with middling equipment. It would also add more variation between groups and reflect their level of training and experience.

This is a really good idea (to have standard orders). We are an officer now - ordering a charge when things seem grimmest is something we might do. This might result in extra enemy casualties if they break, or extra discipline loss for that round.

In terms of game mechanics, this might translate into fighting less people later, greater reputation for us (lower initial enemy discipline), or advantages in subsequent combats.

Well. Just ripped through the archives! Wish I had checked this out earlier it's pretty awesome. Couple of things though.

First, write in actions. It seems like it doesn't happen often, are you opposed to them in general to keep battles more structured? I personally would like the chance to be more tactical about how we our troops fight. Either like the linked post suggested by giving orders, or maybe something like formations instead.

So when I say formations I mean something like our stances for personal combat but for our troops. Maybe we can train some basic ones, or gain new ones from experience depending on what we fight or troops we have.

Like a defensive formation where our troops fight to cover each other and reduce a casualty but inflict one less casualty. Or Rally where they regain 1 discipline but have -10 not on that round but the next round DC. Another possibility is Storm where on the first round since they're shock troopers they can try to overwhelm the enemy and do double discipline damage if they succeed, but if they fail they lose double discipline.

Maybe if we choose to specialize in tactics and train for them we can mitigate the negatives. Maybe specialized troops get different commands. Or unique characters give modifiers to commands.

So for instance we could have had our troops fight the Grenn defensively for a round or two while we tried to kill the Alpha to break their discipline. Elia the Saint-Captain could have given a bonus to that given her nature as a protector.

Pietre I would have liked to have had some sort of bigger effect on our duel as well. Maybe like an Opportunist ability where he can try and beat our roll and do extra damage to our foe if he does, or we use that roll. The +10 battle buddy is the same for if we had any schmuck beside us.

TL;DR orders or formations to trade off stats/risk results for troops. Lateral abilities for unique characters to affect fights instead of straight bonuses.

Also. Talking is a free action, could we have spoken to the Alpha to distract him during the fight?
