"Okay Ryoji, let's go over this again..."

You fidget in your chair in the nurse's office, as Akihito and Tekina are pressing you for answers regarding your Darkworld encounter yesterday.

"How many times do I have to say it?" you reply. "It was a Darkworlder. Looked like a small girl... white hair... she spoke to us. That's all I know."

Akihito places a finger on his chin, thinking. "I'm sorry, but this is very shocking news... are you sure it was a Darkworlder?"

"If it wasn't, then it was a majorly messed up little girl."

"A Darkworlder that looks human and communicate with humans..." Tekina mutters. "How... exciting! This is brand-new information, the likes of which we've never seen before! I'm so confused, and I am loving it! Perhaps this girl has some connection to your situation, Ryoji!"

You're trying hard not to consider that. What if she is? Does that mean you'll soon be a maniac Darkworld monster with a creepy laugh? You hope not.

"We really must see if we can come upon this mystery girl when we are next in the Darkworld!" Tekina exclaims.

Akihito hums. "Yes, but today is a safe day, isn't it."

"... Unfortunately."

Only Tekina would consider that to be unfortunate news. Most would be happy never to see that place again.

"Well then, this matter can wait. Off to class, Ryoji."

Another place you'd be glad not to see again.

As you step away from Tekina's desk, you make note of the two filled beds in the office. Akira's is asleep and resting, her leg wrapped in bandages after your encounter with the giant spider, while Saki is sitting up on the edge of her bed, likely trying to listen in on your conversation. She falls back as you glare at her.

"Still sick?" you ask. "Wow, that's got to be a pain."

Saki sniffles, her nose red with the cold. "It's not that bad. I'm more angry that the nurse won't allow me to attend classes. I can't afford to miss out on my studies!"

"At least you've got a roomate now," you reply, pointing towards Akira.

"Yes, we were up chatting all night," Saki states. Surprising, you didn't take Akira for the chatty type.

"About what?"

"She told me about what you saw in the Darkworld last night. Fighting a guardian? That must have been terrifying for you.

You laugh. "Yeah, but my bravery and quick wit saved the day, didn't it?"

Saki nods, then gives a brief pause. "She also told me about the argument she had with Rei... after you kissed her."

"You're one to talk!" you fire back, "Or did you think I wouldn't notice that card I got you being displayed proudly on your bedside table."

Saki looks over at the card, pauses, then blushes. "It's not stolen, is it?" she asks. "I really can't keep this gift if it's stolen."

You payed for that card with your own damn cash, but you can't resist the urge to mess with the little tight-ass. You shrug, "I don't know. A delinquent like me, you can never be too sure what depths I'll stoop to..."

With that, you exit the nurse's office and check the time. It's still fairly in the morning, and classes don't start for a while yet.

You step out into the school courtyard, ready to get a quick smoke in before class. Times have been stressful to say the least, and you need some kind of release. Anything else you try to do to relax ends up being ruined. You take a bath and a girl sees your junk, you go for a jog, and you get your ass kicked. But there's one thing this academy can't ruin for you, and that's a nice cigarette.

You pull your pack of smokes from your jacket's front pocket, but it slips through your fingers and falls onto the tiled ground. You sigh and bend down to pick it up, but from the corner of your eye comes... a cat?

It snatches the pack in it's mouth and starts running onto the courtyard grass. Where the hell did that come from? Well, you aren't going to let some damn feline take away the one good thing you've got going! You chase the cat onto the grass, trying to grab it, but it outmanoeuvres you and begins moving in another direction. The jingle of the black cat's bell taunts you as you spin and run after it again, only for it to run through your legs.

You shake your head. This damn thing think's it's playing a fun little game. Well, you aren't playing.

You lunge at the cat, trying to tackle the beast, but it hops out of the way once more, causing you to faceplant into the dirt. The cat hops on your head and scurries off through the courtyard. You're glad nobody was there to see that, your reputation would be ruined.

You can defeat Darkworlders... you can't defeat the teachers... you can't defeat any of the other students... but damn it, you aren't going to be beaten by some overgrown rodent!

You break into a sprint following the feline throughout the school grounds, with the beast managing to stay a step ahead of you at all times. You chase it down to the running tracks, where Rei is having her usual jog. "Ryoji, what are you-"

"Can't talk. Chasing cat." You yell back as you race past her. She only looks on in confusion as you leap and try to grab the cat again, only to land with a face full of asphalt. You return to your feet and resume the chase.

It's a lengthy process, which sees you and the cat leaping walls, fences, running inside and outside the main building, until you finally have the creature cornered when it runs into a small shed which appears to have been re-purposed as some kind of shrine.

"Got you know, you little-"

"Can I help you?"

You look up to see a blue-haired girl resting behind the cat. The kitten turns to her, as if seeking her guidance.

"Yeah lady, your little cat stole from me!"

"It did?" the girl asks, as the cat drops the cigarette packet onto her lap. The girl examines the packet, which is now wet with drool, and hands it back to you. "I'm very sorry. Usually, he only picks things up that he finds on the ground. Bad kitty, Daisuke!" she scolds the kitten. "Apologise!"

The cat lets out a small whine, but it doesn't sound sincere. You look around the room... this isn't a shrine at all, but rather a nicely decorated hut filled with various useless knick-knacks, probably some of the cat's other stolen goods.

Oh wow, maybe you should introduce yourself.

"I'm Ryoji. You'll come to learn that I never pay attention."

The girl hesitates, before replying, "Nariko. Nariko Tatsume. If you're Ryoji, then you were with Daisuke when he..."

"Yeah."

Nariko's smile fades. "I'm sorry, that must have been difficult."

"Yeah..." you awkwardly scratch the back of your head. "So, did you name the cat before or after he..."

"After," Nariko explains. "I came across this little cutie two days ago in town. He was a stray trying to fight off another cat twice his size. I took him in, gave him a little bell, and made a little home for him here. I named him Daisuke because he's a brave little warrior. Felt right to honour our classmate."

By giving his name to a thieving cat? Not your idea of honouring the guy.

Nariko pats the ground next to her. "You don't need to stand there, Ryoji. Sit down, have some tea and cakes. I feel you and Daisuke have gotten off on the wrong foot... or should I say paw?"

You sit down next to her in the small hut as she hands you a small china cup filled with loose-leaf tea. You take a sip, and note how cold it is. You set the cup down and open up your cigarette pack. "You don't mind if I smoke, do you?"

Nariko shake her head. "I won't stop you."

You shuffle through the pack, trying to find a cigarette that hasn't been ruined by the dumb beasts drool. Once you find one, you plop it into you mouth and light it up. You glare at the cat as you take a big, triumphant puff.

"So, you set this place up?" you ask. "Seems a lot of effort for a cat."

"For little Daisuke, there's no such thing as too much effort," Nariko says, stroking the cat lovingly.

"Yeah, but do you really need this much decoration?"

Nariko looks around. "Well, most of these are items that Daisuke has picked up and brought back."

You raise an eyebrow. "The cat found all of this in the span of two days?"

Nariko lets out a small laugh. "Yep! He's a little scavenger!"

"More like a little thief..." you mutter, before spying something hanging on an upper shelf. "What's in that envelope?"

Nariko glances at it, then back at you. "I don't know. Daisuke brought it by yesterday. There's no name on it, and I don't feel right reading someone else's private letters."

You fold up the piece of paper and put it back in the envelope. "Who the hell is Hoshi?" you ask.

"Hoshi? She sits right in front of me in class," Nariko states. "It's hers?"

"Yeah... and we should probably return it. Damn, I was hoping for something I could have some fun with. Saki's romantic letter to some penpal, Akio's confession of how jealous he is of me, Nanami's message detailing where she's buried a pile of gold..."

Nariko's eyes light up. "That reminds me." She pulls a small pink book from one of her shelves and hands it to you. "I believe this is Nanami's."

"How do you know?" you ask.

"I've seen her writing in that notebook during class. It's a interesting story she's written... in fact, you star in it."

Nariko nods, sets the cat aside and stands up. "Let's go."

As you make your way to homeroom, you hand begin to twitch as you hold the novel in your hands. You can't help yourself, you just have to take a peek. You open up to a random page and scan the inside.

...Well, this is just smut. Pure and simple. Some of what's described in here... the thought of it makes you want to throw up... though it doesn't get you oddly excited. It's... descriptive, to say the least.

You step into class just as the bell rings for first break. Oh yeah, you wasted a lot of time chasing a cat and hanging out with it's owner. Everyone clears up their books and make their way out the door... except for one. A small, unassuming girl you never paid much notice before. She remains buries in her notebook, scribbling away as you approach her.

"...Hoshi?"

"EEP!" she lets out a startled squeal as you address her. She stares at you, wide-eyed and blushing, waiting for you to speak again.

You pull the envelope out of your jacket pocket and hand it to her. "I believe this is yours?"

"Oh..." she gazes at the envelope forlornly before accepting it. "You didn't read it... did you? Please tell me you didn't..."

She giggles as she closes the door to the classroom behind her. "Oh, that Hoshi's a lovely girl, but you have to be careful around her. She's very easy to upset, hence her affectionate nickname."

You just had a great idea for how you could have a little fun during break. You make your way to the nurse's office and step inside. You see the curtains are drawn around Akira's bed, while Saki is lying in hers, pencil in hand, thumbing through textbooks. Damn, even being bedridden isn't going to stop that girl from studying.

Now, time to spring your plan into action. You saunter over towards her bed. "Hey Saki, how's it-WHOAH!"

You intentionally stumble. Not enough to send yourself face first into the ground, but just enough to fling Nanami's notebook out of your jacket pocket and landing on the foot of her bed. You had the witness what was written inside those pages, it's only fair that you trick Saki into being subjected to them too.

Saki's delinquent senses begin to tingle as she notes the pink book that flew from your pocket. She looks up from her own books and glares at you, pointing at the notebook with the back end of her pencil. "Who does that belong to?"

"It's uhh... uhhh... mine!" you reply, putting on your best bad liar act.

Saki tuts as she picks up the notebook. "I can't believe you, Ryoji. Stealing a girl's notebook. I recognise the handwriting on the front! This is Nanami's! I can't believe you'd take something like this. What if this is her diary?"

And now, for the bait. In a panicky voice, you plead, "Whatever you do, please don't read what's inside!"

Saki raises an eyebrow. "Why? What did you deface it with, you delinquent?"

Saki opens the notebook to inspect that everything is in order, only to be hit in the face with pure smut. All the color drains from her face as she gazes wide-eyed at the writing within. "This... this is..."

So understand the weight of my words when I tell you that I am willing to overlook your theft on the condition that this book never sees the light of day."

You shrug. "That doesn't answer my question. Did you like it?"

"No. I did not like it."

You smirk. "Oh, that's a shame. I haven't gotten the chance to read it yet, but everyone who has has told me great things."

Saki's eyes widen even further than you thought possible. "Everyone? Who else has read this?"

You begin to count on your fingers. "Well, there's Nanami, Nariko... I could go on..."

Saki grabs the blankets, and slowly and steadily brings them up over her head as she lies back.

"I hate you so much, Ryoji." Her voice muffles from underneath the blankets. "Never speak to me again."

You laugh. Yeah, she appreciated the humour of the situation. You leave the book on the bed in case she wants to give it a proper try later and you motion to leave the nurse's office. As you do, Rei's head pops out from the curtains surrounding Akira's bed. "Psst Ryoji, over here!" she whispers to you.

You sigh, recognising the voice behind you, as that one guy from class... Isamu? Decides to place and hand on your shoulder and start lamenting. "That form, the way she glides through the air, that buttocks shaped by the gods themselves... ah, Rei Arisato! Now, there's a woman!"

"Is there something you want?" you ask, brushing his hand off your shoulder, annoyed.

"I'm not spying on the ladies, I'm birdwatching," Isamu replies.

"I don't believe you."

"Believe what you will, Ryoji Shida, but I am a hero of honour. I will not work to harm your social standing."

"Yes, nothing says hero of honour like crouching with binoculars," you say, rolling your eyes. You step away from Isamu and take a puff of your cigarette. As you inhale, you begin to feel a sharp pain in your chest.

You press your hand to your chest, but the pain doesn't subside. In fact, you begin to feel dizzy, and spots begin to blue your vision. Your head is spinning and your feet begin to shake and flail wildly beyond your control. Everything is a blur, and all you can focus on is the pain as your feet begin moving... in what direction, you don't know. Not a good thing to be happening on the roof.

Dammit Ryoji, concentrate. Try to find your bearings.

You continue to stumble around, trying hard to focus on where you are going, but you can't see anything and your feet are moving on their own.

Concentrate... concentrate...

Your vision begins to clear, as you see that you are standing on the ledge of the roof with your back facing out. You panic, but Isamu is quick enough to grab you by the shirt and pull you forward, saving you from a nasty fall.

"Shida, are you okay?" he asks, but you can't speak. Your head feels like it's about to rip in two, but at least you've got your vision back.

As you see the black slime rising up from the ground, however, you wish you were blind again.

"Do... Do you see that?" you manage to blurt out, but Isamu is confused.

"See what?"

"There..." you point, panicking as more and more black slime rises up from the ground. It envelopes Isamu, and soon it envelops you, the darkness being all that you can see. You try to struggle, you try to wade your arms through the thick black slime, but it's useless. You're trapped within nothingness. You spin your head from side to side, but no matter where you look, you can't see anything past the darkness. Not anything... until a bright toothy smile and glowing eyes appears before you...

Your eyes shoot open, and you see Isamu, Tekina and Akihito like this.

"I don't know what happened. We were bird-watching, then all of a sudden he has some sort of... attack. Almost walked off the roof, then he started talking about seeing things, then he collapsed."

"No wonder," Akihito states, picking up you pack of cigarettes. "I'll be confiscating these."

"Ryoji, do you hear me?" Tekina says, as she drops to her knees and places the back of your head in her hand. "What happened to you?"
