You are in command over the Imperial Japanese Battleship Hyuga, starting at the very beginning of December 1941. Due to the will of players and that of the dice, history may go quite differently from what we know. For all intents and purposes, this is a wargame. It is incredibly important that you check the Pastebin link to familiarize yourself with the relatively simple dice mechanics, and to check it somewhat often as I may change important details of it as time goes on.

Last time on Hyuga Quest, the Battle of Midway came to a close, ending in a draw.

You are ordered to to assist in the defense of Guadalcanal, in the Solomon Island chain.

You meet with Abe's force by November 12th, and by early morning on November 13th, the force is in the sound between Savo Island and Guadalcanal, preparing to bombard the American controlled Henderson Field.

An American force is spotted, with unknown composition, and incredibly close.

As you receive orders to open fire, the force flagship, Hiei, and the destroyer Akatsuki turn on their spotlights, highlighting an American light cruiser, Atlanta class. The silhouettes of other light or heavy cruisers and destroyers could be seen in the background nearby.

>Target Atlanta (Range Short)
>Target one of the unidentified cruisers (Range Medium)
>Target one of the unidentified destroyers (Range Medium)

(Since now is as good a time as ever, and with all these enemy ships at such close range, I will include the secondary guns when we roll, assuming a ship is at close or medium range)

You light your own spotlights, focusing on a separate cruiser, certain that the nearby Atlanta class will be focused on by the other ships.

The ship appears to be a Pensacola or Northampton class heavy cruiser.

The guns quickly come to bear, and your secondary batteries come to life as well, the cruiser is hit with sixteen 5" and 5.5" shells, inflicting little damage. Seven 15" shells slam into the cruiser, though not near any crucial parts of the ship.

The cruiser turns its guns towards Hyuga, and there's an odd feeling that, being the largest ship present, the other unidentified cruisers are aiming for you as well.

The Atlanta class had been hit by at least one torpedo from Nagara or a destroyer.

The enemy gunfire rains around your ship, taking light damage from four 5" hits and seven 6" hits, which crater your superstructure.

Some salvos miss you completely.

The cruiser that you are targeting lands seven 8" gun hits, knocking out your port secondaries.

You retaliate with six more 15" hits, this time hitting true, slowing down the cruiser.

Knowing that the role of destroyers is to deliver finishing blows in such night battles, you turn away briefly, before selecting another target.

The Atlanta class is sinking.

You light up your next target, discovering it to be an Atlanta class.

The enemy ships however, manage to fire before you can bear your guns on them.

You take nineteen 5" hits from the Atlanta class, starting a fire on deck.

You take three 6" hits, dealing light damage to your stern.

You take five 8" hits, causing even more damage to your superstructure.

As you prepare to fire, you rear gun mounts have a jamming problem.

You manage to land six 15" hits on the Atlanta class, some over-penetrating, and causing its forward battery to be knocked clean off the ship.

You take four 5" hits, eight 6" hits, and three 8" hits.

The fire rages on, though it is slowly being extinguished.

The rear guns come back online, and the air cracks yet again.

One of your salvos stops the Atlanta class dead in the water, with six hits to the engines. Any chance it had left is ruined when a further eleven 15" shells collide with the light cruiser, and it quickly sinks beneath the waves.

(USS Juneau, sunk)

Not wanting to push the fleet's luck further, and with the Americans facing heavy losses, your force retreats for the time being, the enemy doing so as well.

The force will return to strike the airfield tomorrow.

well, we seem to have done ok overall. Estimate of strength on both sides in this fight? Order of battle might be helpful after that fight.

Japanese losses: Akatsuki, Yudachi

American losses: Atlanta, Portland, Juneau

Portland was finished off by a destroyer.

Hiei took some damage, but we took slightly more. Nowhere near the historical damage she took.
