‘Hey,’ you catch the attention of The Trainer, running up closer alongside him, ‘look, I’m sorry that I haven’t been coming to the gym – I’ve just been to busy lately, and… you know what? That’s no excuse.’

‘Damn right it isn’t, my round and iffy friend.’ He snorts, pointing a finger at you with a frown that only said how much he agreed with that statement. ‘What you neglect could soon spell your end.’

‘You talking about high cholesterol?’

‘Heart disease an’ cholesterol, for your size is a given,’ he gives you an incredulous look, before turning forward; the both of you were slowly catching up to the group now, ‘you gonna tell me if being strapped to a scooter is the life you’re keen on livin’?’

He gestures to Nachi, then give you a disappointed stare.

‘KanMusu and Commander, your fates are entwined – bad habits from you can lead to their their decline.’

‘I’m not a – !’ You bite back on the annoyance in your tone. It wouldn’t serve you well here. ‘I’m not a couch potato. I’ve just been really busy.’ You sigh. He picks up the pace – you try to follow, keen to get closer to the group. ‘But if you’re willing to give me a few pointers, I’d like to have something on hand in the case I’m not – you know, not able to get to the gym. Maybe I need to lose a little bit more weight, but – !’

He barks in laughter.

‘I train you for your survival, under the lights of my temple.’ He grins at you menacingly. ‘You think you’re motivated enough through yourself in the fire, make yourself sweat, puke and tremble?

‘I can’t keep relying on people to make me better.’ You say with conviction. ‘I… I want to stand on my own two feet in when I can at every corner I can manage; the only thing that people can give me – and what I take – !’ You look away, trying to gather your thoughts better. ‘Is the chance. I don’t wanna sound too cliché, but if I don’t push myself, who else is when – ?’

‘You a crazy moron, my friend, but I hear you loud and clear.’ He gestures to your with his hand to come closer. ‘So lean over to my side, so I can whisper my secrets into your ear.’

And he does.

A minute later, you’re back with the group.

Keeping pace with the group is more tiring than you had thought – when your mind was finally on the fact you were putting one foot in front of the other at a rapid pace, the pain finally kicked in; specifically, the joints of your knees and ankles, creaking after seeing so much neglect over the years. It would’ve made you cry at any other point in time, but considering the amount of weight you’d dropped – and just how light you felt in comparison to before – you take solace in the fact that it could have been an even more intense chore. Zuikaku and Kaga, apparently fed up of being told to keep pace with you mere mortals, decide to sprint on ahead… and The Trainer does too, keen on not being humiliated.

That left you and The Vice-Admiral, who was snickering in amusement at the trio ahead.

'Glad to see you’re able to keep up.’ He turns to you, smirking. You let out an amused sigh yourself. ‘I thought you’d collapse from the pace.’

‘Not at all, sir.’ You reply, trying to quicken the pace. He easily catches up – you notice him slowing down for you after a two foot advantage.

He looks on ahead, grimacing as the both of your take in the smell of the ocean, the breeze and the calming sound of the waves. You have to admit, it really was a good day for a jog on the beach here.

‘Do I have you to thank for Nachi not socking me on sight?’ He says it in an amused tone… but you can also hear the weight pressed on his words.

‘Maybe.’ You shrug, cricking your neck as the both of your hasten your steps. ‘Maybe she’s just managing her temper a little better.’

‘I would’ve taken it if you hadn’t stepped in, you know.’ You frown a little, wondering just what he was getting at… before realizing he meant that day in the tent. ‘I’m thankful… but you don’t have to take those punches for me.’

‘She’s my responsibility.’ You nod; whatever Nachi was, she was still your KanMusu. ‘If she’s socking a superior of mine down, I consider it my sacred duty to take it like a man.’

‘Nachi’s troubled, but she deserves to sock me one.’ He lets out a troubled sigh. You notice him slowing down the pace to somewhere around your comfort zone; this instantly troubles you, of course. ‘I mean, getting Myoukou out of there, but… you can’t forget that feeling that you’re put through – what you’re both put through…’

He shakes his head. It doesn’t seem like a topic he’s keen on following.

‘By the way, Admiral wants to see both of us this evening.’ He informs you, much to your surprise. ‘He was hoping you’d be back earlier yesterday before he went off-base, but wasn’t able to catch you.’

‘You don’t think much of the Army, huh?’ You grin. You’d wanted to ask this for a while, what with The Vice-Admiral being former Air Force and all.

‘What’s bringing that up?’ He raises an eyebrow, speeding up. You try your best to follow.

‘You’d think that someone who was with the Air Force would have a few choice words about our new comrades-in-arms.’

‘Don’t bring me down to their level.’ He snorts, making you smirk… a little. ‘Army clogs are the God-damned worst. They come up to you with all their problems, telling you that you got your shit easy because you’re dropped right in after the tough part’s gone – a bunch of elitist sad sacks not knowin’ that when they screw up, our asses are locked in. Skirmishes with ‘em were a buttload worse than eating poison.’

‘No fond memories?’ You chortle.

‘None. Practice sessions devolved into prank wars in the Academy.’ He makes a disgusted noise. ‘Even when The Abyssals came along, they couldn’t stop putting their asses where our faces were.’ He sighs in defeat right after. ‘But still… you gotta respect ‘em for being able to hold out against The Abyssals for as long as they did. If the Army’s about anything, it’s about pride and your fellow man – make no mistake, Commander, they couldn’t give two damns about what you need from ‘em – just that you need for ‘em… but they’ll stick by their brothers just as well as anyone else can, even if they talk like they’ve got a mouthful of socks inside.’

‘Surprised you haven’t socked one in the jaw, given how you feel about them.’ You mention; you didn’t think it’d be this bad. ‘Didn’t think you’d be that much into the vitriolic narrative, Vice-Admiral.’

‘Believe me, it’s one thing to respect a fellow defense arm or branch – it’s another to actually like working with ‘em.’ He grudgingly admits. ‘They don’t have any respect for any rules but their own and no chain of command but the brass on their tops.’ ‘The Imperial Army’s a bunch of blowhards and nutjobs, but they work by themselves just as well. They don’t play well with others – I think they almost started an international incident with Haszad 20 years back.’

‘What happened?’

This was interesting.

‘Haszad and Taiyouga had some sort of cultural exchange thing among units – The Imperial Army got their ass kicked something bad and one of their XOs decided to be a poor sport about it and shat on one of the Haszad CO’s doorsteps.’

‘Sounds harmless to me.’ It garnered a disciplinary action, but surely not an international incident?

‘In some cultures integrated into Haszad’s whole… that’s a marriage proposal.’

You almost trip over a wandering crab.

‘How do you know The Trainer?’ You inquire – you barely knew the man… and The Vice-Admiral sounded like a good place to start.

‘He moved here from Vanzer a long time back – he’s more a mutual acquaintance of mine and The Admiral’s than an exclusive friend.’ He smirks as he gestures forward to the back of the large man. ‘Don’t let his looks fool you – the man’s pushing 60.’

‘60?’ You almost tumble in surprise. The Trainer looked like he was barely 40… and could take you apart if he so needed. Probably piece you back together, too, with an added helping of fear and respect. ‘He’s ripped as Hell for an old man.’

‘He’s been doing this for years. Before he came to Taiyouga, he was an Ambassador to Zuluva from Vanzer.’

You almost stumble again. That was a huge bombshell.

Him?

The Vice-Admiral gives you a flat look.

‘Look at the man and tell me that’s not what it takes to be a Vanzerian Ambassador to Zuluva?’

You couldn’t help but agree. He wasn’t that big… but you doubt anything less than a dozen trained men could probably hold their own against him… if they didn’t at least end up crippled.

‘What’s he doing in Yokosuka, then?’

The both of you slow down your pace, caught in the conversation.

‘He’s retired. He was part of the Vanzer Kingdom’s Special Police Force before he was given a discharge – but he was too valuable to let go, so they stuck him in an office back when Zuluva and Vanzer had close dealings; from what I know, it’s as cut throat an office as it is a battlefield.’ The Vice-Admiral frowns. ‘Things got crazy enough that he retired just before the war started.’

‘If he’s from Vanzer… why is he still here?’

‘Vanzer doesn’t want him back.’ The Vice-Admiral sighs, slowing to a walk. ‘From what I’ve been told, he killed over a dozen Zuluvan soldiers with his bare hands when the next big change happened before coming going home… and Vanzer didn’t want anything to do with him, then. Thought he was responsible for things turning into as big a screw up as they did. Told him that they’d give him money to just go off and do his own thing… and Romeria wasn’t an option because he’d be tempted to march back into Zuluva and settle things himself.’

‘How long have you known him?’

‘Ever since he kicked my ass in basic training for calling him a tall black cup of coffee.

That is a surprising piece of information.

‘I think The Admiral’s the only guy who can go more than a round with him in the ring.’ He rubs his chin. ‘The old man’s a dirty fighter, though.’

‘Could you take him now, you think?’

He says nothing, picking up the pace… before finally answering.

‘Get a matchbox for what’s left of me.’

‘The Admiral wants to meet us, right?’ You address the matter you think is the most pressing; you hadn’t been told by anyone that The Admiral had wanted to see you. It was odd that it would be revealed here on an impromptu jog.

‘This evening. When he gets back.’ You and The Vice-Admiral try to run faster – or rather, you try to run faster. He gives you a curious look… before slowing down again, trying to ease you in the pace better; you’re thankful – you can feel your heart bouncing in your chest like a basketball on a dribble. ‘He was looking for you yesterday… think he forgot that you were taking your little trip inland.’

‘I would’ve met up with him this morning if someone would’ve bothered to tell me.’ You answer, frowning. In front of you, the trio was getting more distant. You curse the sand as it begins to build up in your shoe – the breeze may have been nice, but the texture of the sand against your ankles was something else. ‘You think that a messenger would’ve dropped a note off or something to keep me informed. He should be at the new base, right? I’ll see him – !’

‘He’s not on-base, he’s gone in-land.’ ‘The Vice-Admiral answers, grunting as he picks it up even further – this time he doesn’t bother to wait for you… and you don’t expecting to; fat you may be, but the soreness in your knees and the pain in your thighs was barely registering now. ‘It’s a little weird, though – if he’d left base, you’d think that he would’ve left Command to me… or Ooyodo.’

‘Huh?’

‘Chain of Command.’ The Vice-Admiral answers automatically.

‘What do you think he could be going inland for?’ You take an inquisitive tone. ‘We’re talking short notice short notice. Could The Admiralty want him to do something for them that’s off the books?’

‘Impossible.’ The Vice-Admiral points out, finally huffing as much as you were moments ago. ‘Not with that business with Haszad going on… they wouldn’t want to risk an incident.’

‘Maybe he’s visiting his family?’

‘Possible.’ He nods. That did seem reasonable. ‘Still doesn’t answer why he didn’t pass on temporary Command.’

‘You suspect something going on?’

‘Not really – there’s not much that I think is going behind the scenes besides the Haszad Union being offered a seat. It could be related to that, but it’s unlikely – The Admiralty would’ve put up a note or something for a general meeting.’ The both you jog at a leisurely pace now, gathering yourself. ‘Guess we’ll just have to wait ‘till 5 pm.’

‘You know who’s not waiting, kids?’

The Trainer stops you both in your tracks, hands on his hips and glaring hotly – you were some distance behind.

Me.

You pick up the pace, remembering what was said about a matchbox.

‘Wanna drop down and die, yet?’ Nachi’s the first to talk – instead of an immediate reply, you give her your best glare, followed by a smirk. Your ankles feel like crocodiles are biting away at them and your waist seems to burn as though put in an oven, but you wouldn’t give her the satisfaction of seeing you like this. ‘Come on, everyone already knows you’re a bit of a cow – no sense in proving them wrong, huh?’

She doesn’t mean anything by it – at this point, they’re just words meant to cut under your skin. Still, it would be discourteous of you to not return it in kind, especially with the generous helping of a salt she’d been so keen to exchange with you. The Trainer right in front of the both of you controlling your pace and Zuikaku and Nachi behind… you make your move, cutting right in front of her.

Nachi immediately stops – not desiring to barrel into you anymore than The Vice-Admiral and Zuikaku did… but Nachi, being close to you, almost trips into the sand from your sudden move. Zuikaku throws you a disapproving glance, but The Vice-Admiral snorts and shakes his head – unable to decide whether to chastise you for such a low move or to applaud you for immediately taking the shorter road with your Heavy Cruiser. Either way, the whole group save the both of you, get into a sprint… and you lag behind with her, glaring at you as though you’d dropped notch down a personal ladder.

‘If I can drop, you can tumble.’ You grin mischievously… widely, despite your building fatigue. Nachi grumbles as she keeps up alongside you – you half expect her to run and catch up with the rest of them; as you were, you couldn’t quite catch up. ‘Come on, you can go on ahead… I think Zuikaku and the rest are better company than I am.’

‘Zuikaku’s a zealot and The Vice-Admiral’s a prick – I don’t know who the old guy is, either.’ She gives you a kind smile as the both of you drop into a slower pace… or rather, you do, and she follows. ‘That leaves you as the only company I’m worth keeping for the time…’ You feel a little touched at that comment, ‘even if you are piss-poor at shaving women’s privates.’

You actually do tumble onto the surf at the comment, tasting the mud and the foam on your lips – thankfully, it didn’t stain your top too much.

Nachi chuckles as you struggle to your feet.

‘Do you have to bring that up in public?’

‘There’s no one here, sir.’

Indeed – the others were far enough ahead to have a one-on-one with no intrusions.

‘Wanna cop a feel?’ She lifts her undershirt, emphasizing her pelvic area and smirking. ‘Kaga does it a lot better than you, you know? Maybe you could take lessons from her… go ahead.’

You give her a flat look, already bored.

Fine.’ You answer, dropping your hands to your side and narrowing your eyes. There wasn’t a single soul in sight and it looked like the other three were too far ahead to notice anything sordid. You hold up your flesh and blood hand, wincing a little as you steel yourself for the inevitable trip down Nachi’s spats – not that it was a particularly bad, trip, but you felt that… as a man, you had to prove a point. ‘Fine.’ You repeat, nearing her and letting out a breath. ‘You asked for this – don’t regret your decision.’

Nachi’s only answer is to stretch the waist of her spats – which didn’t leave that huge a gap, strangely – it was oddly tight, but you didn’t take time to evaluate that. Mustering your courage and focusing your annoyance, for some reason or other you shove your hand down into the nethers of your Heavy Cruiser, your finger moving up and down bare, if sweaty, skin. You scrunch your face, grumbling… before finding something amiss. The both of you lock eyes as your finger runs along her labia and up, thumb slightly spreading her down there as you continue to prod and probe… you actually feel thoughtful now, never mind your hand was right between the legs of a smug-looking woman who really should understand that this wasn’t the place to engage in such relations.

A thought hits you; you let out a low whistle as you realize just what it is that was amiss.

‘Huh.’ You let out an impressed sound as your middle finger brushes against her opening. ‘There’s no stubble. It’s all smooth… it’s like a waxed marble floor.’

‘I know, right?’ Nachi smirks, if a little uncomfortably. You did have your hands down her shorts, after all. ‘She does a damn good job, that girl. No leftovers at all – if anything, it feels a little too smooth sometimes.’ She pats her chest, as if it was an accomplishment. ‘I guess that’s the difference between a pro and an amateur.’

You’re actually rather hurt by the accusation; enough that you put your ring finger just into her entrance for a pull. She jumps a little, flushing for the first time in a while, before glaring.

‘I can feel your skin – it doesn’t feel rough.’ You let out another impressed sound. Kaga had really done a good job. ‘There isn’t any stubble. I guess I’ve been going about it wrong.’

‘Is my Commander admitting a fallacy?’ She says in a playful tone.

You pull your hand out… and see one of your fingers glistening with a mix of fluids. Sweat and arousal all in one – you rub it against your pants, keen to catch up with the group. Nachi jogs alongside you – you try not to recognize that smirk of hers.

‘Admit it.’

‘What?’

‘You like my vagina.’

‘I’ve seen better.’ You say dismissively – Nachi rolls her eyes at this, shoving you towards the sea… but you recover enough to keep yourself from toppling. Gathering your balance, you notice that she’s already in front, spinning around and giving you a saucy smirk, inviting you to catch up. ‘Hey, hang on there!’

The trio is nowhere in sight – neither are any of the other workmen crews that you usually see by the beach. It was still early, of course, so you couldn’t start pointing fingers as to why people weren’t at work just yet. Nachi is a lot more relaxed now – a surprising feat considering just where you had your digits not moments ago, taking a leisurely pace – for a KanMusu – alongside you as the both of you try to reach the end of the self-set course: The Admiralty Base.

‘Why do our conversations always end up with me having my hands between your legs?’ You inquire flatly. You find yourself strangely energized after that debacle, if it could be called that. ‘We haven’t a one-on-one conversation between us that didn’t magically have my hands on your nethers – you have to admit that it’s a strange way for things proceed.’

‘To be fair, I’m always the one asking you to poke around there.’ Nachi admits brushing a strand away from her eye. ‘I guess I just don’t feel anything… like that about you, you know?’ You raise an eyebrow. As much a fact as it is… there is no denying that the connections there had been more friendly vitriol than any real reason for intimacy between the both of you. ‘Besides, at least we got our little secret handshake over and done, right?’

Something hits you.

‘Wait, so are we friends?’

‘We’re Commander and Subordinate.’ She correct you – her tone is serious, of course, but here eyes are a little bit playful. ‘Still, it’s better to have some sort of connection than to keep being at each others throats for as long as I’m breathing, right?’

‘You’re trying, but it’s just not working.’ You don’t try to make it sound so mean, but there is an element of a script to this.

‘Look, I’m trying to give you the best I can with this benefit of the doubt thing.’ Her tone is uneasy, even if her running form eases slightly alongside you. ‘But I get it – you weren’t chosen, you’re not anyone’s first choice… but I trust you enough to lead me into battle.’

You would’ve stumbled again if the both of you hadn’t dropped into such a leisurely pace.

‘But… you can promise me something, right?’

‘Depends.’ You shoot her a smirk.

Improve.'

Quickening the pace, you only nod in response.

Time for a systems check.
>>
‘How are the upgrades I gave you?’ You inquire – the pace was a little bit slower now, but it still felt like a bit of a chore; you’re quite surprised at your tolerance to the strain… and were wondering just why you hadn’t quite thrown up yet. ‘I signed off on ‘em, how do they fire?’

Nachi stops in her tracks, bending over with her hands on her knees. You stop, too, giving her a confused look – you notice that she looks strangely tired all of a sudden; you near her, only for her to stand upright and bring a hand to tell you that she could manage herself just fine… before again, dropping into a low bow to catch her breath. You turn a worried gaze upon her, wondering what had hit her so badly all of a sudden for her to be drenched in sweat… before you realize that she had been sweating before; which was odd – as far as you knew, KanMusu reactions to exercise wouldn’t have turned out like this.

You put a hand on her bare shoulder. She raises a hand, probably to brush it away… but ends up grasping it, thankful for the support.

‘They need a little bit of a workaround.’ She grumbles, rolling her shoulders. She glares past you, flexing her arm. ‘I know that prep’s not usually done until we get sent for missions, but really,’ she grins at you, although you can tell that it’s without the usual humor, ‘adjusting it by yourself is Hell on the core.

‘Workaround?’ You step back from her, frowning.

‘Yeah… hang on, let me show you.’

Before you can ask what she looks to show you, a bright light almost blinds your lone eye. You cover it for a while as a gust of wind almost pushes you back; it’s only for an instant, though, as soon after you see Nachi, still clad in her spats and top, but also equipped with her weaponry. She twists around, almost knocking you over if you hadn’t stopped the turret from hitting you with your Kantai Steel prosthetic. She gives you an apologetic look, which you respond with a chastising click of your tongue.

Gesturing you to move back, which you do, she turns around soon after in a majestic spin… and her turrets creaking.

‘They don’t sync with me as well as my old gear.’ Nachi grumbles as you touch one of the barrels. You didn’t particularly see where the problem was, but you trust her with her judgement.

After all, they were her armaments.

‘What do you mean sync?’ You frown, crouching and giving the rigging a push upwards to get a better look. You try to see what she’s getting at for yourself… but fail to do so. ‘Is it that loud sound?’

‘When I aim at something, there’s a lag percentage timer on when I fire. She crosses her arms. ‘Usually I can keep it to a fraction of a second, but now I’m at a tenth.’ She sighs. ‘I can’t line up a shot as well as I want to.’

‘The fairies’ll deal with it, right?’ You inquire. There’s a part of you that worries if they’ll be sent out in bad shape, though; if that ever happened…

‘I…’ Nachi frowns, twirling herself. The gear clanks loudly. ‘Of course they will… but with the quality of materials that we have – ?’

‘Quality of materials?’

‘Certain gear grades are easier to adapt. Generally, base gear – un-upgraded – generally turn out to be the smoothest. Almost no need for a sync pattern. Once you upgrade, though… luck of the friggin’ draw.’ She lets out a sigh again, annoyed at her gear.

‘So you’re saying that even with upgrades they may end up… inferior?’ You couldn’t quite follow where she was taking is – and truth be told, the new guns were aesthetically impressive. Even if Nachi said otherwise, you really couldn’t see where they went wrong… other than that loud creaking sound they made, but you supposed that nothing was ever made to be perfect.

‘No, just…’ She trails off, clutching her head, before adopting a serious look. ‘You know how you have different grades of plastic, right? Imagine that every core of every KanMusu has…’ She trails off again, looking thoughtful. You’d learned a bit of how KanMusu spirits and cores synchronized with their gear, but this was probably the first time you’d be given such an extensive lecture in regards to the Magitek. ‘All right, it’s like this. KanMusu gear is upgraded at a certain value using a combination of Kantai Steel and other magical materials – each of these materials have a certain synchro value to them.’ She continues tentatively, keen to keep you from getting lost. ‘A good set of materials – and this varies class to class – requires less synchronization to prepare for events like missions and the like. There isn’t a 100 percent fix, of course, but the general rule is that if it suits us more… the better they respond.’

You catch the gist of it: good materials meant less lag time… and the fairy calibrations prior to missions were meant to get their performance as up to speed as they can.

‘Why wouldn’t they just fix it straight away, then?’ You put your own opinion in. It seemed strange that they would fit KanMusu with gear that would have them end up at the bottom of the sea.

‘Core synchronization numbers change from day to day. It’s not so much for maintenance as it is for us to actually calibrate and attune ourselves to our gear – it’s like you and The RAY… and how we are, what the quality of the materials go by, there’s no direct correlation.’ She kicks the surf, her gear clanking loudly from the action. ‘It’s nothing bad, of course… but I do wish they’d give us a better batch.’

She sighs one more time.

All right, can I please have a roll call on who YOU folks think is leading the race for "BEST GIRL" - in so many words. I need to know where the supporting characters stand and if they're still enough to capture your imaginations thus far... or if I have to change things.
>>
>>811169
Personal preference, Nagato is best girl. She's capable, experienced, incredibly confident, and that's just what I happen to like.

Really, if you expected an intelligent, well thought out answer, then you'll be disappointed. Best girl status is conferred by the heart/gut/dick, not the brain.
>>
>>811174
I'm counting on that, actually. I just want to know what my Players/Questers like/dislike about their best girls and what they hope so I can assess my audience.
>>
>>811169
Well, I don't actively dislike any of the girls, but I don't know if there's a single 'best girl' for me yet. My favorite division members right now are probably Nagato, Houshou, Nachi, and Murakumo. I also really enjoyed getting to see more of Iowa during the Inland Adventure.

I guess my least favorite character right now would probably have to be Tenryuu because she seems to act completely differently every time we see her.
>>
>>811169
its kaga or takao for me
>>
>>811169
So far all of them are pretty good, with takao and murakumo a little behind the pack. I absolutely love what you did with shiggy and sami, i almost died from cuteness. Shiggy is closest to best girl status for me, but as >>811174 said the heart dick and gut decide, and while she has the gut and heart, my dick cant get behind that with how she is at the moment, which isn't a bad thing, mind you. Personally Id like to see more in depth content in regards to all of our dds, specifically murakumo. I feel like we haven't really got to know her too well yet. (Not exactly your fault, since we don't exactly talk to her too much)
>>
>>811169
So far I like Shigu the best, She was one of my favourites in original kancolle too but I think I like yours better anyway. Nagato is close second because she's just an interesting character. After the inland trip I started liking Tenryuu a lot more even with all that happened.
And Seaport a cute.
>>
>>811217
>And Seaport a cute.
I would waifu it if I wasn't absolutely positive that mech is prowling the depths waiting for us to make that mistake
>>
>>811169
takao, kaga, nagato are on the best girl position
>>
>>811234
so nachi is forever friendzoned?
>>
>>811266
brozoned, atleast for now
actually look like a slow burn relationship actually

>>
>>811276
I actually like that about Nachi.

Shigure is cool, and Iowa and Houshou I enjoy for some weird reason

‘How does a bad… synchronization correlate with a poor practice session?’ You frown, wondering just how the two were relatd. You hadn’t seen any problems emerge with Samidare or the others. ‘I know it’s not good from the wording itself, but how bad is it for you? I’ve seen Hiei and Murakumo go at it with minimal complaint.’

‘It’s not bad, per se,’ she admits, whirring her turrets for emphasis, before aiming for the horizon, ‘it just gets a lot of getting used to – it’s like one of those times you buy a new shoe or a couch; it’s not quite the exact fit but you learn to just shove it in and let time take its course.’ Her cheeks turn red as she raises her hand, as if to halt you from cutting in. ‘Don’t think we’re not thankful, though – a lot of us were wondering when you were going to put the order in for an upgrade.’

‘The Admiralty only gives me what they can afford.’ You answer solemnly, leaning over and touching the tip of her cannons. They did seem a lot more… robust than you had previously seen them. ‘Must feel a lot more reassuring, though, right?’

‘It’s uncomfortable but not enough for me to actually have it attuned every second of every day – the lag’s annoying when I try to get my practice runs up and the balancing is off when I try to recover from a recoil.’ She shrugs her shoulders, making the turrets shake. ‘Still… I’m a little thankful to be out of the base set, at least.’

‘Wouldn’t the rates as they are actually give you bad practice sessions, then?’ You suggest.

‘They would, but I don’t think any sane KanMusu would want to walk around at full power all the time anyway.’ You frown, wondering just what she meant. ‘I’m sorry – I must sound like a neurotic mess right now.’

‘No, it’s all right.’ You raise your hand in assurance. ‘These kind of things… it’s like, my job to settle, right? Anything I can do to make it better?’

‘You’ve done enough… and I mean it in a good way.’ She admits, bringing her hands together – and in a flash of light, the turrets mounted on her are gone. ‘These upgrades’ll give us a better chance of surviving out there, and even if it’s a little late, thanks.’

You cock your head, confused.

‘What?’

‘This is probably just the second time you’ve said thank you to me.’ You point out, putting your hands on your hips. ‘You’re welcome.’ You scratch the back of your head. ‘So, this is…’

‘I’m just complaining.’ She gives an apologetic smile, hopping ahead, ready to resume the run. ‘It’s nothing that I can’t get used to over time. That is… unless you suddenly think it’s a good idea to give me another upgrade?’

‘Any reason you brought it up like that?’

‘What, you never like being whiny once in a while?'

You try to keep the chortle down.

‘So, um, I know that you’re assigned and I do your paperwork, but… what is it that you do exactly?’

‘Huh?’ Nachi gives you a surprised – almost condescending – look. It was an odd question to ask, after all… but you really don’t know just what her duties were; you were told she was assigned…

But you hadn’t bothered to find out under what until now.

‘I mean, you know, on base.’ You try to make yourself clearer, jogging to keep up with her now-raised pace. ‘I know that you sign off on duty and since all of us are pretty much pulling double roles now – Shigure with the MagiTek facility, Samidare with odd jobs and Nagato pretty much The Admiral’s security, I was wonder what you did around here.’ You frown and grunt – your body was definitely feeling it now. ‘I sign off on your work sheet, but I don’t think I’ve seen your official designation on-base.’

‘Almost a month of us staying together and now is when you see fit to actually ask me just what it is that I do on-base?’ She smirks – as if to tease you further, she picks up the pace, spinning around to give a smirk ad jogging backwards to raise your ire even more. ‘You’re piss-poorer as a Commander than I would’ve thought on my first day.’

Mumbling to yourself, you push yourself a bit more… and somehow manage to catch up within a few moments.

‘Harsh.’

‘I do two things on-base.’ She mentions nonchalantly. ‘One, I help with attunement feedback – in layman’s terms, I’m a guinea pig for the fairies to tweak whenever they think they want to change the baseline when it comes to gear. Takao and I rotate on that front, so I interchange with her whenever we have duty – she’s been taking most of my schedule since you got out of the hospital, so I’ve been sticking to my second job a lot more often than I like.’

She scowls, emphasizing her dislike.

‘And what would that be?’

Relief work.’ You almost trip. Again. ‘Don’t laugh – being around people isn’t the first tick on my agenda list, but my evaluation officer said that it’s either that or they’re going to banish me for being too unstable.’ You open your mouth to say something, but she cuts you off quickly. ‘Before you wonder just how I ended up there, I think you know enough about me in my file to know my current situation.’

That had not been what you’d intended to say at all.

‘In only said you were under evaluation – I’m not sure if the charges garnered something as severe as banishing.’

‘Yeah, well… I don’t make the rules; I just bend ‘em.’ She grumbles, slowing down – much to your relief. ‘Still, I wish I could get off

>‘This is a good thing; I think being more personable would be better for you over being so… mopey.’
>‘Do you want me to get you off? Maybe your evaluation officer will take something that doesn’t involve civilians?’

‘This is a good thing.’ You try to sound as enthusiastic as you can be – a chore, considering just how out of breath you are presently. ‘I think being more personable would be better for you over being so… mopey.’ You scrunch your nose, trying to give her your best supporting smile. ‘Besides, some community work means you’re helping in more ways than putting a bullet in an I-Class Destroyer.’

‘I don’t like people.’ Nachi grumbles. You could have giggled – she sounded like a teenager. ‘I’m all right with my team and I like my Division, I tolerate you, Commander, sir, but I don’t like people.’ You’re not sure if that was a friendly jibe or a testament to her patience. ‘They’re nothing but a bunch of baboons clamoring over what they don’t have and how easy everyone has it in comparison – I’d like to see how they’d do in front of a damn Ru-Class one of these days; no one’d notice me abandoning a post if – !’

Nachi.’ You take a warning tone, frowning.

She grumbles again – the both of you jog by the surf for a while as you try to find the right words.

‘You know, I had a little bit of sympathy for you at the start… but now I think you definitely should stick with it.’ You advise her. ‘Besides, you endured me for a few weeks just fine – what’s with being around a few face – !’

You remember the scenes with Tenryuu; Iowa; you stop, wincing internally and jog for

‘Oh.’ You look away, embarrassed at having forgotten that minute detail. ‘Right… sorry.’

‘Even if you take that out… I don’t like dealing with humans more than I have to.’ She quickens the pace – you trail behind slightly. It’s a wonder she can talk to you without a break. ‘I’m all right getting my orders and killing Abyssals and covering my team, but handing out medicine, keeping the units in line, talking with these block leaders or whoever they are… it isn’t my thing.’

‘Wouldn’t you think it would be a good opportunity for you to learn a bit?’ You offer, again. ‘I’ve been in a few jobs; not all of ‘em are things to write home about, but they all prepared me for whatever came ahead.’ You finally pull ahead of her a little, trying to keep the mood up. ‘Who knows? Maybe we can actually see a little approval in your bedside manner, if any good comes of it.’

‘Harsh.’ She laughs, falling behind slightly.

‘I’m saying just stick with it, but if you really think that it’s just too hard to go through, you can come back to me again and I’ll see what I can do – till then, though… I think that you’ll do just fine.’

‘You’re trying to be to cool.’ She pats you on the back. ‘But It makes you look like a total dork.’

The both of you share a smile as you come up to the trio ahead.

You finally catch up to the group… and collapse onto the sand, much to the amusement of those present.

Dicks.

No one was in the showers when you got back – and the jogging had only been the tip of the iceberg; The Trainer had decided right after to have you were done with your run to have a series of cool-down… or in his words, warm-down exercises which consisted of a series of movements that were jerky, tear-inducing and almost left you a sobbing mess. Nachi – in a manner that you would have pegged as very much out of character – had been quiet and concerned as the both of you made your way back to the barracks… or rather, halfway. For some God-forsaken reason your Heavy Cruiser said her goodbyes and decided to go on another run around the town.

You managed to get back without drama and by the time you were in front of the doors the place was beginning to really wake up. Just outside the small compound, trucks full of army personnel had begun to roll around. You made your way into the showers and out without any incident, donning your first set of casual clothes and making your way down later. You would have made yourself something to eat, but you didn’t feel hungry at all. The run may have tired you out somewhat, but for some reason or other you didn’t feel like having anything beyond a warm glass of water.

A messenger from the base site did come later – with several schedules change for your KanMusu, who were apparently undertaking some sort of timetable change in regards to their duties. He left soon after, keeping you to your devices, which brought you to the now, clad in your newly-bought T-Shirt and pants. You muse that you must look more like a dad on a lazy weekend with your wife out with the children than a Commander now – you only need a beer can to complete the ensemble… and maybe a pair of slippers.

The place was quiet enough for you to catch up with some paperwork – unofficial sign-offs, of course – and plan out your day. Your KanMusu didn’t seem to be in, busy as they were with their duties… whatever and wherever they were. You’d even go so far to say that you missed the ruckus a little. Looking at the door you wonder where LEIA and your attendants were… they would usually be through that door early, you spin your chair, wondering just what could be holding them up when…

It hits you that it’s the weekend.

Of course no one would come over; you vaguely wonder where everyone is when the sound of tip-toeing feet reaches your ears – you swirl around the chair, almost toppling as you come to a sudden halt. A pair of hands cover your eyes – your good eye, anyway – and a light snigger reaches your ears. It was light and breezy… and definitely feminine.

You’re really thankful for that last part.

‘Not bad, Kaga,’ you feel a smile etch onto your features as your thumbs rub against the palm of her hands slowly pulling them away from your face, ‘you could apply for Spec Ops if you get some skill with a rifle.’

Kaga responds by nuzzling affectionately into your neck, taking your scent in a manner you could only describe as desperate. You furrow your brows, pulling her forward as her arms touch your cheek and give your belly – now a little less pronounced compared to its size a few weeks ago – a playful beat. Her playful giggle is a little out of character for her, you feel… that she’s a little bit too giddy than you would have expected from your usually-stoic and snappy Carrier. Kaga gives your a wifely peck on the cheeks, humming in content – for one reason or another – nuzzling into you further from behind your chair.

You give her shoulder a squeeze…

Then you remember just who was on base. You look around fearfully, scanning for –

‘Submarines don’t touch Carriers.’ Kaga immediately mentions. You give her a look – she’d hit the nail right on the head without you even mentioning it. ‘We’re an exception to most regs when it comes to… intimacy.

‘I wasn’t thinking it.’ You say quietly.

‘Sure, you weren’t.’ She takes that smug tone – a lot more like the Kaga you usually knew.

Before you can move, she maneuvers herself to drop onto your lap, her toes pointing to the ceiling and her head of hair resting against your prosthetic. She gives you

‘I don’t have anything to settle for the Sky Force today, so if you want, we could…’

Fool around?’ You finish for her.

‘You’ve been neglecting me for days.’ She takes a neutral tone, slapping your chest to emphasize her displeasure. ‘I don’t mind you paying attention to the others, but you don’t give me a second look outside of the bedroom… are you really that bored of me already?’

‘Your eyebrows are thick.’ You try to say it in the most deadpan tone possible. ‘That’s a total turn-off.’

She reels back a little, as if slapped.

‘I’m kidding.’ You cradle her head and kiss the top of her hair, smiling apologetically. ‘I’m sorry that I made you feel that way. You know that…’ You frown, stopping yourself. ‘That’s no excuse – how can I make it up to – ?’

She licks your bottom lip, running her hands through the back of your hair as she pulls you in for a slow, hot kiss…

I know how…

She puts a finger under your chin, locking your eyes with her piercing, mischievous gaze.

I think I’m backed up enough to wreck a few desktops…

Okay, you pervs, I'll write it up and post the doc once this thread is over. In the meanwhile, you'll get the aftermath scene, which I'll post in a few minutes. I don't want to risk a ban.
>>
Sweaty, shivering and naked, you begin to pull yourself out of Kaga’s plump bottom, thoroughly spent. You put both hands on her ass, using the soft texture of her cheeks to push up and out – the head of your dick instantly feels relief at being free from the tightness of her ass… and despite some misgivings, you can’t help but spread them a little more, amused that this twitching mess of a woman was all your doing. The floor is wet with fluids from the both of you, and Kaga looks like she’s not in the mood to even raise herself – or you again – from its hard, flat texture. You run a finger between her opening and her rear, making her shiver a little bit more, before dropping fully on her back – she could take it.

‘Really?’ She begins in an amused tone, throwing a glance back at you. You kiss her ear as an apology. ‘I do all the work and you end up using me as a mattress.’ She sighs, defeated… but very much still amused. ‘I’d think that you’d want something a little less smelly than this.’ She raises her arms a little, accommodating for your hands trying to flip her from the under. ‘I suppose I should be thankful that you’d settle for a KanMusu as a bed.’

‘Don’t sell yourself short.’ You roll the both of you so that now the both of you were on your side, your member nestled comfortably between her buttocks. You wrap your arms around her, hooking right underneath her breasts. ‘I think I should be the thankful one… considering that you’re settling with someone like me over going out there and hooking some stud.’

She looks over shoulder, giving you another quick kiss.

‘You want to try being a cuckold?’ She smirks, surprising you with the proposition. ‘I still have an address book and some numbers that can get that done real quick.

You stiffen – not down there, but a nasty feeling at the back of your head knocks you into a sense of… fear. A little guilt comes after; maybe you are feeling a little possessive and insecure in yourself when it came to your capacity in loving your KanMusu as more than just machines of war.

‘I’m joking.’ She says apologetically.

‘If you think I’m inappropriate…’ You trail off, to which she unhooks herself from your hold – with some force – and staggers to her feet, grabbing onto the table for balance.

‘I don’t.’ She gives you a flat look. ‘Although, I am used to a bigger size…’

You deflate.

Laughing loudly, she throws herself onto you instantly, touching noses.

‘You’re such a girl when it comes to this.’ She gives your butt a gentle squeeze.

‘Well...’ you try to mount a comeback; nothing arrives.

Kaga detaches from you and throws you your clothes, which you quickly don. You glance at the clock… late afternoon?

It was hard to believe that you were at it for so long.

‘Kaga,’ you begin, buttoning up your pants and straightening them out, ‘I’m thinking of running some errands today, would you like to… I don’t know, come with me?’

It’s an awkward proposition… and one that catches your Carrier by surprise. Her eyes widen as she turns to face you, closing her thick white top; she appears to struggle with what to say to you – even you can’t believe that you’d proposed it. Considering how things just ended… it would’ve probably been heartless of you to just have it done and go your separate ways – for the day, anyway – and just think of it as a typical occurrence. You think, deep down, that Kaga deserved more than a fuck and a handshake.

‘I was actually thinking of catching up with my work.’ You can tell she’s a little reluctant by the tone of her voice – but to join you or to put in a declination so she could get back to her work, you really can’t tell. You’re not put down by it, though; you really want her to join you… if only for the company and the snark.

‘I thought you said that you didn’t have anything else left to do?’ You remember that she’d said that she’d done – or didn’t have to do anything – for the ISSF for the day; why’d she brought up work if she’d said that there was nothing else to do?

‘For the Sky Force.’ She emphasizes the last words of her sentence, frowning as she straightens the hem of her wear. ‘I still have my usual forms and letters to fill out for Base Duty.’

How easy it is for you to forget that everyone on base pulled double duty.

Oh.’ You nod dumbly, feeling a little silly. It’s no wonder than you hadn’t communicated with Nachi about the capacity of her duties until this morning – mentally you chide yourself for being a poor Commander. ‘What do you do on-base, anyway?’

‘I’m in charge of food supplies.’ You frown – as far as you knew, that was The Quartermaster’s job. Yuubari and Tenryuu had that covered, didn’t they? ‘The ones for the KanMusu. I sign off on stock and transfer when it comes to Tanaka Salt and any foodstuffs that we’re involved with – I share the job with Fusou, but with everything that’s been going on… I’ve been taking the task hands-on.’ She grimaces. ‘You won’t believe the number of hagglers I get in the mail.’

You can relate.

‘Right.’ You sigh.

‘I can still follow you if you’d like.’ There’s a little enthusiasm in her voice… before her shoulders droop. ‘But you’ll have to wait an hour or so. I can’t push this back any longer than I have.’

'Anything I can do to help with you with the work?' You flex an arm to emphasize yourself, smirking playfully. 'I think I'm pretty handy with a pen and paper.'

She shakes her head, but the smile on her face is apparent enough.

'I appreciate it, Commander, I really do.' She really does sound like it, too, but her eyes have a firm quality to them; a resolve and a will that refused to budge. 'However, considering the scope of the duty, not to mention my responsibility to it, I have to decline your help.' She gives you another smile, this one apologetic. 'I know that you're eager to help and I really, really appreciate the offer, but I'll have to decline. This is something that has been assigned to me and I'd like to finish it with my own two hands.'

'There's nothing wrong with asking for help, you know.' You offer, approaching her.

Kaga's response is to shake her head.

'There's a saying that a Shaman assigned to me once said: help will only come to those who help themselves. If I ever need your help with anything I can't handle for myself, rest assured, I'll definitely call for you.' You frown, unused to this sort of formality and courtesy from your Carrier. 'This is, however, something that I am entrusted with, so I will have to decline your offer of help.'

You cross your arms, smirking. You could respect that, at least.

'You're almost as stubborn as Nagato.'

'I believe I made that apparent when I spread my anus for you, dear.'

You look away, cheeks red.

Kaga's laugh, despite your embarrassment, is very much melodious.

Hey MECH, task doc needs to be updated
>>
‘All right, I’ll wait for you down here while you finish your work.’ You say decisively. Kaga raises an interested eyebrow, giving you a flat look in response – she clearly hadn’t expected you to actually be so determined to spend the day with her… or whatever was left of it, anyway. ‘Besides…’

You give the place a once-over – though faint, traces of evidence that led back to the deed were still very much present. While Kaga was a Carrier and you and Nachi had a plan to throw the Submarine off your primary scent, you’re not quite sure that you wanted it to be so blatant that the whole base knew that you had used the floor of your barracks’ common hall for the purpose of improper relations… or as far as improper relations could go in regards to Carriers… or that you were sleeping with one of your subordinates to go around the base any more than the rumor with your deviant habits with Takao already had.

It was one thing to have certain habits… and something else entirely to be known as the Commander who had practically nailed his assigned Carrier to the floor for all of two hours and beyond.

‘If you think you want me around you the rest of the day,’ Kaga crosses her arms, giving your a mischievous look, ‘I suppose I’m in no mood to decline.’

She nears you, wearing half-lidded eyes. You almost take a step back from the sheer surprise she had thrown upon you with the action – but before the thought could register, she hooks her arms around your neck and presses her forehead against yours; you’re taking each others scent now, and you find that, despite your climax not five minutes or so ago, that you’re not quite sure it was all flushed out just yet.

Or, maybe, it was just that Kaga had that effect on (slightly) overweight young men such as yourself.

She brings you in for a small, slow kiss, the tip of her tongue teasing your lips with low, sensuous swipes… before pulling away, her nose brushing teasingly against yours, before finally pulling away.

What a clingy Commander I have here…

She shakes her rump for emphasis, the hem of the skirt flying slightly to reveal the flesh of her plump bottom, winking as she disappears up the stairs. She, the cruel mistress that she is, leaves you to your task of cleaning up your sordid tryst… grabbing a pail and a broken mop you get to work.

You find, however, that despite all the soap and water you use… Kaga’s scent doesn’t quite leave your thoughts.

An hour later, as she had said, she is next to you… right as you put away the mop and pail.

There was still time left in the day, and you’d made up your mind on what to do.

‘So, where are we headed?’

As you close the door to the barracks, a thought strikes you. Now that you had Kaga around, maybe you could…

‘Come on, let’s go check the commercial district.’

Kaga nods… and immediately grabs your hand, your prosthetic, holding it in hers. A faint blush comes over her as she looks at you with a slight upturn of the lips on her otherwise stoic features; you feel a little red in the cheeks yourself as the both of you make your way to compound exit and onto the street, which was lined with more army personnel than maintenance crews and reconstruction teams. You make out one or two MPs per unit gathered – you suppose this must be the result of the team-up that you had suggested the other day. None of them make notice of you as you walk onto the pavement and towards the commercial district; Kaga in your hand and by your side, you knew exactly what you wanted to do before the day ended.

Today, you were going to solve Fingers’s lack of tact and grace even if it meant your death. You’d assured Irako that you would take care of the business as well as you could. Fingers had shown a gross lack of prose in his letter – enough that Irako thought that the whole affair was either a grudge or a threat on her life; you try to remember the odd – and at times. horrifying – choice of words that Fingers had deemed fit to express his love for Irako – in the truest and grandest sense.

The item in question was in the back pocket of your pants, having procured it just as you were leaving. Worse came to worst, you could just burn the damn thing and just discourage your naive subordinate’s pursuit of romance, as harsh as it was.

‘So,’ Kaga snaps you out of your reverie, ‘what are we doing at the commercial district? Just checking in?’

You hesitate to give a straight answer, but considering that Irako was Kaga’s friend as well…

‘One of my subordinates has relationship troubles.’ You frown. You didn’t buy it yourself – it wasn’t so much that it was a relationship issue as it was a bloody letter that could pass off as a declaration of a curse. Still, Kaga seemed somewhat convinced. ‘I promised that I’d help him out with it before it got any worse…’ For some reason, you feel the back pocket of your pants – there was the sinking feeling that the letter would somehow gain sentience and devour you whole. ‘Well, any worse than it already is, anyway.’

‘That’s a very good gesture from you.’ Kaga giggles, rubbing her cheek against your prosthetic. ‘I didn’t think you’d go out of your way to actually offer some words of wisdom… you’d think someone drawn in ten directions would actually be the first to decline on offering some relationship advice.’ She finishes with a toothy grin and an affectionate grip.

You frown. That sounded like a veiled reference to you, really.

Not that you minded the snuggling, of course.

As you walk into the town, you notice that there had actually been some progress in the restoration of the town compared to your last visit through here. While many buildings still looked decidedly unsafe, the place leaned closer to unfinished neighborhood projects than war zones… although, it probably wasn’t much.

But it was progress.

‘The place looks like it’s getting better.’ You declare – Kaga loosens her grip on your arm as you exit the main street and down the last street into where the Commercial District’s Plaza was. ‘I remember when there were huge blocks of cement all over the place.’

‘The Army’s been a great help to The Admiralty’s efforts.’ Kaga nods in agreement, looking at the buildings herself. ‘The Lord’s declaration to help with the efforts has helped more than it has inhibited.’ She smirks at you, letting out an amused noise. ‘Don’t tell Nagato I said that, though.’

‘Said what?’

She pecks you on the cheek.

You arrive at the district to see the ramen store open and tables littered all in front – everyone seems to be having a ball, even this early in the evening – you notice a bunch a television set mounted on the wall, which was probably the cause. Fingers, however, is by his lonesome under the plaza tree, a troubled expression on his face. You approach him, Kaga in tow… he doesn’t seem to notice you, his eyes focused on the baseball bat in his hands.

‘Fingers?’

‘Heya, Boss.’ He gets to his feet, saluting. He turns to Kaga, bowing. ‘Heya… Boss’s Lady.

‘Did something happen?’

‘Oh, no, I was just thinkin’…’ He grins widely, getting to his feet… and produces a piece of paper with messy hand-writing over it. ‘Hey, you mind proof-readin’ this? I mean, it ain’t even a rough copy, but I found this book, see, and I thought I could use it to improve myself.’ He puffs his chest proudly. ‘It’s gotta be much better than the last one, at least, right?’

You take the piece of paper… and begin reading it.

Your mind goes blank as you read the contents, incomprehensible and all-encompassing in an instance.

EXISTENCE ENDS. EXISTENCE ENDS.

The paper crumples itself and goes ablaze in a red fireball as your drop it, a spectral wind whisking away the remains.

Fingers lets out a frustrated sigh.

I guess it’s back to the drawing board.’ His shoulders slump.

‘Commander, what’s this about?’ Kaga frowns.

‘Fingers likes Irako.’ You rub your temples. There was no use hiding it now.

BOSS!

‘Fingers. Shush.’ You turn to Kaga, running a hand through your hair. ‘We’ve been trying to get him to convey his feelings the best we can…’ You sigh. ‘We’ve been less than successful so far.’

‘You sound like you’re in a pickle.’ She gives the both of you an amused stare. ‘Maybe I can help?’

‘I was planning on going about this alone,’ you admit that it had been a show of arrogance on your part to toss yourself into the matter, but now that Kaga was here, you decide to try it from another angle, ‘but seeing as I crashed and burned my own way through, I think it’s in the best interest for the survival of the species for you to take point on this, Kaga.’

‘I’m glad you know when you’re over your head.’ Kaga nods – she doesn’t show that she’s happy with the decision, though, instead pointing right back at you. ‘But I’m not taking point on this – you are.’

You frown, confused at the turn of events. Unless you had heard wrong, she was the one that was offering her help to you.

‘You just asked me – ?’

‘If you needed my help.’ She cuts you off, giving you a respectful bow… and a reassuring smile. The action only makes you frown deeper, though; you didn’t know what it was she was getting at. ‘You have it. But I’m not going to pull you by the hand along the way – he asked you to guide him.’

‘That doesn’t make any sense – you say yes to helping me help Fingers but right now you’re not helping me at all?’ You gesture to Fingers… before withdrawing your hand. That had been rude; you turn to apologize. ‘Sorry, Fingers.

Fingers shrugs – it was no big deal to him, at least.

‘I’ll help you when you need it. Right now,’ Kaga takes a motherly tone and adopts an almost-motherly gaze, gesturing with her head towards the now-seated former gangster and your self-proclaimed Number Two. ‘I think the first step is to actually talk to your subordinate here.’

Kaga’s amused look has you mouthing profanities as you – ironically – take her advice and sit down next to him on the low brick wall. Fingers looks at Kaga in confusion, then turns to you in anticipation; you don’t say anything for a while, trying to collect your thoughts. The truth hits you like a locomotive as you realize that your relationships – your concurrently running successful ones – were anything but the result of being active in your pursuit; you had been nothing but… passive, really, as it all fell around you in an almost convenient manner. Nagato had practically, for some reason or another, was head over heels for you; you’re not even sure of the extent of Takao’s feelings for you – and you’d been given the warning that this was as new to her as it was to you; Houshou was a lusty woman whose mind strayed to the pleasure between her legs more than you were comfortable with, and Kaga

You pause, as something else hits you.

Your relationships weren’t conventional, but if there was one KanMusu who probably knew you better than you… and still cared for you despite that…

The only one you could honestly say – to you, anyway – fell for you for you… was Kaga, on that night when…

TBC
>>
‘Fingers… um…’ You tentatively begin – it was a little hard for you to draw on reference pools when the only thing you had for advice were horrible movies, books and your suddenly-convenient position of having 4 women clamoring over you as though you were an incubus made flesh, ‘you know what? Let’s forget the letter for the time being.’

You wave your hand for emphasis. Fingers nods, getting the message.

‘Okay.’ He replies in all seriousness, grasping his baseball bat as though it were some sort of security blanket. ‘So… what do we do?’

Truthfully, you’re stumped. You couldn’t just tell Fingers to jump into it like you did; your case was a little unique, but you needed to find somewhere to start. You give Kaga a look; she nods – for what good that did – before leaning back to start your little pep talk slash lecture.

‘I don’t know.’ You could have hit yourself as the worst possible combination of words ends up being your first. You take a deep breath, wishing Nagato was here to psych you up a little, at least; you feel that you could use some reassurance right about now. ‘You put that baseball bat down and talk to me about this, for starters?’

‘That’s a good first step.’ Kaga snickers. You give her a flat look – she turns her head the other way, a coy smile on her lips and her gaze never leaving yours.

‘Okay, first thing’s first… what are you trying to tell Irako?’

You could give yourself a pat on the back if you were able to – that had been exactly where you wanted to start.

A strange emotion comes upon Fingers’s face – he has a ghost of a smile; a very dopey smile, not quite from embarrassment, but very much honest. He rubs the back of his bald head, letting out a small chortle and a distressed sound… but not quite distressed either. He’s a jumble of emotions, jumping from one spectrum to the other, struggling to tell you what could be the simplest words in the whole universe.

‘That she’s the prettiest snowflake I ever did see, yeah?’ He barks in laughter, hands on his knees. ‘Aw, man, ya made me say it, Boss – there goes my tough guy image, yeah?’ He lets out a whine and a groan, as if he’d rather be anywhere but here. ‘Look, can’t we – ?’

‘That’s actually really good, Fingers.’ You assure him. A small part of you envies the innocence of Fingers – for what measure of innocent, anyway. ‘Why don’t you start with that? That you think that she’s the prettiest snowflake you’ve seen.’

‘Aw, Boss… that’s so childish!’

‘It’s not.’ Kaga steps in, crossing her arms. ‘That kind of small, childish thing… that’s exactly what you can build on.’

‘So that’s it? I just tell her how pretty she is?’ Fingers whines, flopping onto the grass. ‘I said that last time!’

>‘I think that should be good enough.’

‘From my limited experience… romance doesn’t count for much.’ It’s a strange epiphany that you have, talking like this, but… considering your situation and the context of the whole matter, you feel that it’s the best place to start of. ‘Yeah, I mean, you can be in love, no problem – and there’s always room for being a romantic, but honestly? It doesn’t count for much.’

Despite Kaga’s frown bearing down on you, you find it in yourself to speak from the heart. Admittedly, this was a dangerous place to tread for you – there was a term they used for times like these: the blind leading the blind… but over being pretentious and referring right back to Kaga, who was strangely quiet on the whole matter despite her discouraging glance, you take the burden of having to drop on Fingers just what it was he thought he was getting himself into.

‘A little softness, a little innocence, it goes a long way in first impressions.’ You try to word it a little better. ‘I’m no good in the love aspect of things – my whole relationship cube has been a impromptu whirlwind – I’m kinda envious that you’re actually the one taking the first step here, so I’m going to help you the best I can… don’t focus on the passion.’ You take a warning tone. ‘Don’t talk about blood or the high of the moment, go on the low, tell her about how the days go and you just want to hold her hand or just talk and play darts. It doesn’t have to big and loud… or bloody.’ You give him a reassuring smile as you lean back, staring a the reddening sky. ‘I think I see the problem with your writing – you’re focused on the snapshots, the moments… you don’t take any time thinking about just being there with her, for her and watching the snowflakes fall or something.’

Fingers doesn’t write any of it down… but he does listen very intently. He looks like a studious teenager more than a full-grown man leading a gaggle of ex-thugs. Somehow, it makes you feel a little… melancholic.

Then, you hear Kaga speak.

We can just sit by the fireside watching the stars, waking up and living our lives. Then we can look for one another and just do it all again because it doesn’t matter – I don’t need a lover; I have you, friend and wife – there are no questions that need asking that we don’t already know the answer to.

‘That’s Kujoh, isn’t it?’ You offer her a smile.

'Smart.' She winks at you, giggling slightly.

‘Damn, your girl’s good with words, Boss.’

‘I think,’ Kaga approaches the both of you, ‘that Irako would like you to take it slow with her.’ She spares you a glance, before looking back to Fingers. ‘She’s an old-fashioned bird. She won’t say no.’

You’re taken aback… a little, at least, at the suggestion.

‘Face-to-face?’ You cross your arms, regarding your Carrier with a worried gaze. ‘That’s a huge step up, isn’t it?’

‘It does, but from the conversation, you’re practically fumbling for words when it comes to finding the right prose.’ Kaga takes a smug look from right out the books, stretching her arms upwards in an almost bored manner. ‘He doesn’t look like he can’t at least say he thinks a girl’s pretty to her face, can you?’

You look to Fingers – and suppress your amusement as he pouts and looks away, swinging one leg over the other. Kaga was right on that front, at least… and most important of all, his mouth didn’t seem like it would give Irako anymore nightmares than the letter already had. Patting your back pocket, you let out a low sigh, wondering just how you’d missed on a solution that was so simple… until you realize there was one particular aspect to the suggestion that would probably have the whole plan flop over and die.

‘Fingers is still a bit of a thug, though.’ You grimace… before frowning and remembering out other little detail. ‘And adding to that, how do you think she’s going to react when she finds out that he’s the one that gave her that abomination of a letter?’

‘I’m right here, Boss.’ Fingers practically whines, getting to his feet and pouting. ‘Don’t talk about me like I ain’t here, yeah?’

You shrug.

Kaga frowns, placing her hands on her hips.

‘You honestly think that Irako’s so shallow as to dismiss someone right away based on the fact he looks like a thug?’

You bring your prosthetic to your chin and give Fingers a once over.

‘He is a thug, though.’ That had been the basis of your approach.

Boss…’ Fingers kicks a pebble, mumbling as he looks away.

‘It won’t be your words on that letter, though – it’ll be ours.’ You frown. Kaga hadn’t been much help at all here. ‘I think that… if you can’t get through with writing, being direct with her would be the best course of action.’

That did make sense – changing avenues was a viable option.

‘I’ll go with whatever the Boss thinks is best.’ Fingers lets out a sigh, his shoulders drooping. ‘I ain’t good with romance, I get it, yeah, but Nee-san, yer a girl, ya know? No offense,’ Kaga doesn’t seem to take offense to it at all; if anything she swells with pride at the connection, ‘an’ the Boss is a dude and… I think he’d get where I’m comin’ from a lot better.’

Kaga’s eyes wander over to you, a coy smile on her lips.

You don’t know whether to roll your eyes or to puff your chest that Fingers thought that highly of you.

>‘He’ll lock up and stutter as he is now.’ (Decline with this option, go back to writing the letter)

‘If you think it’ll work, then…’ You let out a breath; you weren’t quite sure where this would lead, but Kaga had agreed to help you – even if she hadn’t expressed a desire to take charge outright. ‘All right, Kaga, let’s do this your way.’

Fingers jumps back – he’s probably didn’t expect that you would agree with a direct method so readily.

WHAT?!

‘Kaga’s method does seem like the best method in getting this whole thing out of the way.’ You quickly explain; that seems to pacify him somewhat, but doesn’t wholly get rid of the anxiety you see etched on his face. ‘Not that I’m trying to just get it out of the way, but… you have to admit, Fingers, it’s probably the only way you’re going to be able to connect this without a misunderstanding.’ You turn to your side, mumbling under your breath. ‘Or a stockpile in curse wards.

‘But what if she says no?!’

‘Then wouldn’t it be better for her to just say no to you instead of waiting and middling around in daydreams?’ Kaga jumps right in, her sense of timing the best you’d seen to date. With a cold gaze she regards Fingers, who visibly shrinks away from it. ‘Irako isn’t someone that dreams of a prince or a white stallion; I doubt there’s any woman out there that actually does.’ She says the word seriously – more as a warning than a piece of advice. ‘What she’ll appreciate the most from you, really, is honesty.’

‘That’s exactly what girls say – and they go back on it all the time!’ He takes a very whiny tone now. It feels as though he’s trying to employ some sort of delaying tactic to keep you from making him go through with this.

‘Then wouldn’t Irako not be worth your time if this were the case, then?’

Kaga and Fingers turn to look at you – the both of them are wide-eyed, surprised at your choice of words. Truthfully, you were already sick of this odd dance that he had seen fit to undertake, but remind yourself that it wasn’t too long ago that you were in the same situation.

‘Fingers… I know that it’s a big step for you, but… we’re guys, you know?’ You try to put some humor in the situation. Kaga is the only one that shows amusement. ‘Even I helped you with that letter and played a wright, it’s not going to be you and your alone – it’s a nice gesture; fit for any romantic, but Fingers, it’s not going to be in the translation that you really just want to…’ You struggle to go on a little. The words were really hard to come by about now. ‘Date her.

‘But Boss…’

‘I don’t have much experience in the romance – !’

The both of them snort.

‘I don’t know if that’s a snort of affirmation or sarcasm, so I’m just going to take it as the former.’ You narrow your eyes at Kaga in particular. ‘Fingers, are you just going to middle in letters and bad poetry or are you going to really give it a go?

TBC
>>
You raise your hand to shut him down again.

‘Before you ask what if she says no again, let me put it down for you.’ You let out a breath, gathering your thoughts, your experience. ‘It’s part of life – there’s no obligation for someone out there to cater to your whims, to give you a happy bowl of sunshine; the word is as big a part of your world as the word yes is. You’re not going to stave it off or run away from it.’

‘But I don’t know any pretty words…’

Irako, I think you’re the prettiest snowflake I ever did see,’ Kaga says in a cheerful tone, ‘will you go out with me?

Fingers grumbles, turning red and shuffling his feet.

‘I think the details can wait.’ They really can’t, but at this point you were already tired of the shy schoolboy routine. ‘Come on.’

The three of your don’t bother to hail a buggy – Kaga is more than enough to convince your subordinate to just suck it up and follow the both of you towards Mamiya’s restaurant. He’s verbal in his complaints… but ultimately, with the both of you there, walks alongside you until you reach the former site of the Command Tent, where, a little bit further up, you see Irako sweeping the street as Army personnel and maintenance crews rush past her to get to their duties.

It was now or never.

‘Commander!’ Irako enthusiastically bows. ‘Good evening, we were just talking about you.’

‘Huh, who’s we?’ You blink. Was someone looking for you?

As if answering your question, the blonde chef working Mamiya’s

‘Evenin’, mate, you here for your cooking lesson?’ He winks at you; judging by the grin, he was in a pretty good mood.

‘Um, maybe some other time.’ You shake your head and raise your hand. ‘We’re actually here for something else.’

‘Oh.’ He looks from you, to Kaga to Fingers before nodding and moving into the ‘Right, I’ll leave you to it, then – if you want to get on anything I’m right here.’

‘So what can I do you for, Commander?’

‘Irako… remember when I said that I was going to – ?’

Before you can finish, though,

You take that cue to step back with Kaga and let things take their course.

‘You’re Fingers-san, right? What are – oh.’ Realization seems to strike her at the worst possible moment as Irako seems to instantly lock up… and Fingers didn’t look like he was confessing to an onlooker that didn’t get the context.

It looked more like a shakedown.

‘I thought you said she wasn’t the type to put stock into looks?’ You hiss at Kaga.

‘I may have assumed wrongly.’

You would have smacked her at the back of her head if you were the type.

You stop yourself. This wasn’t your part to step in – or Kaga’s; in fact, Kaga had more reason to step in than you and she looked no less stoic than she usually was… or that she was just very, very good at hiding it for now. Whatever it was, you felt that this wasn’t about you anymore – with the scene set and the die cast, you tell yourself the frightful and fantastic fact of the current occurrence.

That it was sink or swim for Fingers.

‘Hey, uh, you know… I wrote that letter to ya the other day.’ Finger starts – Irako’s reaction is predictable; fear instantly comes upon her eyes and she grips the handle of her broom so hard that you can here the groan of the wood against the crushing grip of her own digits. Despite how she looked, she really as a KanMusu. Seeing her distress, Fingers approaches her, arms a little open but hesitant to proceed any further. ‘I didn’t mean anythin’ bad by it, though, honest! I’m just a little… little bad wit’ words ‘s all!’ He slaps himself on the forehead, staggering slightly. ‘I… I just wanted ta tell ya that ya…’

Despite Fingers’s words, it really didn’t look any less of a shakedown than it had been before. In fact, some of the maintenance crew and MPs – never mind Army personnel – were by the sidelines, watching the whole scene unfold and clutching whatever tool or weapon that they had in their hands… even you find a little bit of worry creeping onto your person, but still hold steadu.

‘Wh – What are your intentions?’ Irako squeaks – almost adorably.

Fingers puts his hands on her shoulder – you make a move to halt him, as Irako shrunk even more, looking away and shaking in place. You could see tears in the corner of her eyes – fear had definitely overtaken her at this point… and you make a move to stop Fingers before he did something that could possible end up with him checking in an extended stay in the MASH.’

I like ya.’ He says with a small stutter… but with such conviction that it has you stopping in your tracks. You’re the prettiest snowflake I ever did see… and I… I wanna go out with ya, if it’s all right? I’m sorry I scared ya, I ain’t… I ain’t good with words, but I’d really… really like it if ya’d be my girl?’ He instantly steps back, raising his hands comically. ‘I – I mean, no obligation, ya know? I like ya, but that don’t mean that you gotta say yes, but I’d like ya ta… eh?’

‘Oh.’ Irako cocks her head to one side, her cheeks red, looking thoughtful. ‘Oh, um…’

She smiles shyly.

Okay!

Fingers explodes.

‘YES! YEAH! YEAH! I DID IT, I DID IT! I GOT A GIRLFRIEND!’

Men in jumpsuits, fatigues and the like rush in, clutching makeshift weapons.

DIE, NORMALFAG!

He meets them head on, grinning like a maniac.

The chaos that erupts is extraordinary. Fingers, a one-man army takes on almost a dozen young men with an almost childish glee – the tears stream down their faces as they call out on just how unfair the Universe is that a bald thug would be able to get a girlfriend before any of them did. At first, you did feel that it was all right to have it slide… but when a crowbar flew your way – barely caught by your prosthetic before it could do any damage – you decide to put a stop to it.

Men.

The result is instantaneous – the men all line up, bruised and battered… but none of them look like they would have any lasting injuries. You want to chastise them for being so petty as to assault a man for doing something as natural as acquiring a girlfriend… but considering that they looked just so pathetic; like a line of high school students that were being called out by their teacher, you decide on just having them get back to their work day; the evening was already fast approaching… and anything that you had in mind would definitely be more detrimental to the bigger picture.

‘Sort yourselves out.’ You command, dismissing all of them.

As you close your eyes and let out a sigh, an animated set of giggles and laughter reaches your ears – Fingers was already enjoying the fruits of his courage, animatedly chatting with Irako about practically everything under the sun. Irako, to her credit, looked positively amused by her newfound boyfriend, blushing and nodding at every word he spouted from his mouth. He didn’t look like he was even bothered by the scrape on his elbows or the bruising above his eye.

A menacing presence catches your attention – growling and dissatisfied young men shake their fists at Fingers’s fortune; not that he was paying any attention, of course, so focused was he on Irako.

You pinch the bridge of your nose as the tearful glares of the single young men make themselves known to the new couple.

Fingers.’ You gesture for him to get it over and done with – there was no need to provoke the masses again.

‘Sorry, Boss.’ He rubs the back his neck before giving his attention back to Irako. ‘I’ll see ya tomorrow, right? Maybe we can go…’

‘Fishing?’ Irako suggests, much to your surprise.

‘Yeah.’ He gives an honest smile. ‘Yeah, I’d like that.’

You let out a sigh of relief – and so does Kaga, wrapping her arms in your prosthetic; she shares a worried gaze with your for a while, before nodding in approval. Fingers had solved the puzzle at the end… and you? You learned just how lucky you had it in comparison to some sorry saps.

Burn in Hell, Normalfags.’ Are the words of the dispersing crowd.

You let out a heavy sigh; mission accomplished.

By the way, as a reward for completing the mission.

Irako and Fingers are taking their first steps in this little stage, but they couldn't have made it here in the first place if you weren't there to set things right. Having cleared things up between them and put them on (hopefully) the road to a long and healthy relationship, they see it thanks to put in a good word for you to the maintenance crew and the fairies to fix something special for your Division.

CHOOSE A REWARD:

Special Item: Crushgaunt
Stat Bonus: Support (-1) upon Equip
Bonus Effect: A Melee Special Equip for those close encounters. The Crushgaunt generates a psychic echo that gives a chance at leaving foes stunned. However, the sheer weight to it may leave your ships fatigued and might clash with upgrades.
Equippable by: Battleships and Heavy Cruisers

Special Item: Edge
Stat Bonus: Attack (+1) Defense (-1) upon Equip
Bonus Effect: A Special Equip for quick hitters. Edge is an intermediate upgrade that randomly generates a magic field to pierce some of the toughest Abyssal shields. A charge up is required before firing.
Equippable by: Destroyers, Light Cruisers, Torpedo Cruisers

‘Come on, Kaga.’ You gesture for her to leave Irako and Fingers to their business… whatever it is they had on their minds, now was hardly the time for you to come between them.

Seeing a buggy drive past, you take the opportunity to hail him down – it’s not the Old Man, thankfully; you’d have to pull a Hell of a miracle to get Kaga to ride with you then. You take the front seat and she takes the back as the engine roars and the driver begins the journey; the roads are a lot wider now with the rubble and moved out of the main streets, making it easier for the him to maneuver. After the first corner, your companion finally sees fit to question your choice of destination, curiously leaning over the top of your seat.

‘So, where are we going?’

‘I think I have a long overdue date with Akashi about this.’ You indicate your eyepatch. ‘As much as I like wearing it, she wanted me to check in with her after a week… now that I’m free,’ you focus on the dashboard – a truck speeds past you in the opposite direction, ‘I might as well have her take a look on how it’s doing.’

‘You didn’t bother to have a check-up on it at all?’ She frowns.

Truthfully, you had the opportunity to do so before… you just hadn’t bothered because you, admittedly, had grown quite fond of it. There was just something that echoed wearing an eyepatch – a sense of experience, authority, a weariness with the world that showed just how jaded and damaged you were… it was pretty cool to actually have something to show off to start a topic. Of course, you also had a magically-constructed prosthetic arm made of Kantai Steel, but you were always a sucker for the classics.

Before you know it, you’re in front of the MASH, where the odd-mustached man from before again was… this time snoring away in his chair as crew came and went, not even giving him the slightest bit of reason to stir. You jump out of the buggy… and so does Kaga, who takes the chance to play a damsel dropping from a tower… right into the your arms. She’s lucky that your reflexes had improved significantly since your installation into the post of Commander.

‘My hero.’ Kaga winks at you teasingly as you set her onto the ground. You hope that the Submarine isn’t anywhere nearby… or if anyone would bother to report to them. Being on-base, you didn’t want to do anything that would put you in a potentially –

‘Good evening, Commander.’

You curse under your breath.

‘Good evening, Ma’am.’

The Submarine stands there, holding a notebook and pen.

‘I see that you’re wasting no time putting yourself into worse graces.’

Her smile doesn’t quite reach her eyes.

‘I like women, what can I say?’ You try to appear coy.

You hope to Heaven that it’s enough to throw her off your trail. Goya giggles unnaturally as she approaches… Kaga, who glares at her, but ultimately says nothing.

‘I can see that.’ Goya looks thoughtful, pressing against Kaga’s belly. ‘I can smell it, too.’

She does something; it’s enough to make Kaga look like she’s about to vomit – her eyes roll back and her knees buckle. She drops to the ground hard, looking as though she was catching her breath. You’d seen her do nothing more than a soft pat on Kaga’s stomach – how hard could it have been to have made one of your elite ships drop down like all the wind had been taken out of her lungs. Kaga doesn’t do anything… she refuses to meet the Submarine’s eye. Wasting no time, you spring into action – misdirection be damned, this was going too far!

‘Kaga – !’

Kaga raises a hand, stopping you in your tracks. She throws you a reassuring smile – small, tired, but there. It doesn’t help much in calming you down. Goya drops to one knee, tilting Kaga’s chin upwards and clicking her tongue.

‘Your scent’s all over her.’ She says it in a detached voice – like a child observing a trail of ants. ‘Your signature and your touch… I can sense it – it hasn’t been long since you’ve crossed that line, has it?’ She giggles, smiling up at you. ‘Oh, don’t be surprised; there’s not much that I can’t see that isn’t already there – be assured I won’t interrupt just what it is that’s going on between the both of you.’ She gives Kaga’s cheek a light pat. Kaga doesn’t look at her, still. ‘Even I know the limits of my jurisdiction.’

She gets to her feet, puffing her chest.

‘Is he a good lay?’ She asks it loud enough for the small amount of people around the entrance gaze at you curiously, making a spectacle of herself. ‘Are you going to throw him on the wayside after you find a bigger, wetter cock?

You had had enough. No one treated your Division members like that.

‘Carriers don’t fall under regular circulation.’ Role be damned, you march up to her, regarding her with as much disdain as you could muster. ‘I believe that even you understand that much, Miss Submarine?’

‘Oh, someone’s been reading the rule books.’ She giggles.

‘Goya.’

Akashi arrives, clad in her bikini and lab coat, eyes blazing.

I believe that I ordered you off my premises ten minutes ago.’ It’s not a statement; it’s a demand.

‘I’m just trying to assert my authority.’ Goya pouts, waving and already going on her way. ‘They were being mean to me. I just wanted to play a bit. Toodles!’

She doesn’t wait for any other response, walking down the street with a whistle as you rush over to Kaga.

‘Thanks.’

Akashi nods before gesturing you to scoot over to tend to Kaga – your Carrier raises a hand in protest, that she could handle herself. Your worried gaze, however, doesn’t leave her; she doesn’t particularly struggle to get up, but her face does – for an instant, at least – scrunch in pain. She curses, turning her head to where the Submarine had waltzed down; you look to see the Submarine disappearing down a corner, wholly gone from your vicinity.

‘Can you walk, Kaga?’ Akashi inquires, for some reason feeling Kaga’s belly.

Kaga snorts in response, crackling her knuckles in a display of controlled anger.

‘I always forget why they’re called the SS.’ She practically spits it out, letting out a grunt as – now apparently feeling better – she lets glares right at her front, very likely embarrassed from being made into such a spectacle by the Submarine. ‘Bunch of snobbish, self-righteous bi – !’

‘Language.’ Akashi chastises, placing her hands on her hips. ‘Can you walk or do I have to bring you in on a stretcher?’

‘I’m fine, Akashi.’ Kaga sighs, clutching her belly. ‘It’s just my pride that’s a little less than whole now.’

‘Did you provoke her or did she do that because she felt that you were an easy target for humiliation?’

‘Does it matter?’ Kaga snaps, almost angrily. She immediately looks like she regrets it, though – but Akashi didn’t seem to mind, if anything, she gave an understanding, motherly smile in return.

‘No, it doesn’t.’ Akashi looks apologetic, even if she didn’t have anything to do in Kaga’s public humiliation. ‘In fact, I was about two seconds away from tearing her apart myself.’ She frowns. ‘Not that I can, of course, but it’s the thought that counts.’

‘Must be hard suppressing that psychotic behavior on a day-to-day basis.’ It’s a small joke on your part, and it does get Akashi grinning and Kaga throwing you a bemused glance.

‘Just you wait until you get back into a hospital bed.’ She grins toothily. ‘You’ll see how I acquire catharsis.

You’re not smiling anymore.

Akashi brings you through the compound, which is mercifully much emptier than it had been before – you suppose with the weeks passing by, the patients were declared better and released into less intensive situations. You enter the compound-within-the-compound, where Akashi’s office was, everything in there looking exactly as it had been during your last visit here. She leans against the desk, crossing her arms.

‘So, what can I do you for?’

‘I came to get this checked.’ You tap your eyepatch. ‘I think it’s been long enough.’

‘I was wondering when you’d bother.’ Akashi answers crisply, before turning to Kaga. ‘Kaga, do you mind waiting here for a bit?’

She nods. Akashi gestures towards you to follow her – the both of you make your way through the inner compound and outside the gates, leaving Kaga to her lonesome. You felt a bit bad leaving her here, but you were in no position to argue with the person in charge with the well-being of your eye. Several medics and crew members occasionally stop you as you make your way to wherever Akashi had in mind – you see that even with the lesser numbers, she’s still as busy as ever as they hound her for details on power distribution, the fairies helping the crew and several KanMusu who were apparently under her wardship for whatever reasons there were. Her expression doesn’t change, though, with the occasional glances she throws over her shoulder at you she keeps that stoic, flat look.

It’s enough to make you strike up something to talk about.

‘Sorry,’ you start, stepping into another tent – this one with a bench and several wooden cabinets along the side, ‘couldn’t find the time.’

‘Oh no, don’t worry.’ Akashi finally grins, taking off her lab coat and putting it aside. ‘It must have been quite a kick for you to keep that on all this while, right? Play the mysterious, grizzled, hardened veteran?’

You turn red.

‘Don’t worry,’ she giggles – although you can tell that there is a smugness to it, ‘I know what makes you boys tick. Sit on the bench.’

‘Do you need me to take it off?’ You approach the bench, feeling the skin of the eyepatch.

‘I’m the Doctor.’ Again, she answers crisply, gesturing you to sit down. ‘I’ll do it.’

Nodding, you leave her to her job. Akashi presses on your shoulder, steadying you – you don’t need it, but in the ten days you’d been under her care before, you know that this is how she got her routine going. She runs a hand underneath one of the straps… and relieves you of your eyepatch, holding up a small flashlight. There is a strange hue of blue that you see – it is an odd new experience; Akashi looks like there is a sort of light azure quality to her… even as the light shines you. Strangely, you don’t feel blinded by the light at all, despite the warnings from before.

‘I’m upping the intensity.’

You feel like a hot needle pierces your eye – but for some reason it doesn’t make you flinch or cry out. It’s more like a pain that is like it’s… a first time you dip your feet into a cold pool or breaking a height threshold on a mountain and catching your breath.

That doesn’t discount on the hurt factor, though.

‘Does it hurt?’

‘Hurts a little, honestly.’ You frown; her fingers were digging into your forehead a little hard.

‘Can you see fine?’

‘Don’t you have one of those cards to test my vision or something?’

‘Are you feeling unbalanced or experiencing nausea in any way?’ She ignores you pressing forward.

‘Not really…’ She had been right on that diagnosis that your eye was now a little more sensitive to light… which was why you had donned the eyepatch in the first place; you’d hoped that the condition would’ve been gone by now.

‘Hang on.’

She clutches the side of your head, almost painfully. Another flash of light – and a light gust of wind – almost makes you throw yourself back before you steady yourself against the bench. Familiar cranes and wires – Akashi’s gear, make themselves known to you as they – on her telepathic whim – prod the area around your eye as Akashi flashes a low-intensity beam into it. You’re genuinely uncomfortable now, but are very much hesitant to question her methods when she could very well kill you if you so much as distracted her from the task. She scrunches her features and lets out a breath, muttering some jargon you couldn’t make heads or tail of.

Then, it happens.

There is some sort of strange understanding that you reach – as though a million thoughts pass through you all at once. Akashi’s cables, cranes and steel plating were more than just that; there was a language in them, a basic construct – you see it all bind and twirl and connect into her, as much a part of her form as your arm was now. Despite Akashi’s protests – which you can’t hear over the din of sensations – you turn your head; you unwittingly scratch the top of your forehead, lifting your prosthetic and gazing at it in wonderment. It was like a second skin… a layer that was as bound to you as the bones to your flesh; you can see it all, the connection, the link… just how much of you was fueling the –

You drop to your knees, vomiting.

‘Close your eye!’ Akashi yells, holding your hand over it. ‘Close it! You’re getting sensory overload!’

You do… and instantly the sounds stop; the glow and the links are gone, and you have a splitting headache. Akashi pats your back as you try to gather yourself. She holds you up with considerable strength; your eye is still closed… you don’t dare open it again.

‘How many fingers am I holding up?’ She raises her pinky finger.

‘Your pinky.’

She whistles too loudly for your liking.

‘Incredible – I knew that there was some resonance and correlation between your ability to receive Kantai Steel, but this… this is a rare case.’ Akashi chirps. ‘I should put in some notes about this; the academia would receive my thesis for sure!’

‘Does this mean I’m a pirate for life?’ You joke, keeping your eye tightly shut. The headache was going away now – thankfully, but Akashi wasn’t.

In fact, she was shifting your head left and right to get a better look of you.

‘Always finding the humor in things, aren’t you?’ She quips dryly, before zooming in so close that your noses were barely a centimeter apart. You turn slightly red at the proximity. ‘This is incredible – don’t blink. I didn’t think think that you’d have a resonance feel this strong… it’s so rare to see this happening in a case; I think we’ve only have 4 or 5 historical cases where the link’s just so – ?’

‘Akashi.’

She cocks her head.

‘Your fingernails are digging into my skull.’

‘Sorry.’ She lets go, moving away and placing her hand son her hips. ‘Anyway, this is incredible – your eye, its activation cycle, it’s…’ ‘It seems to whirr and click when it’s in the presence of a significant alchemy or magic constructs? You’re like one of those metal detectors.’

‘You turned me into some sort of magic scanner?’ You grumble, placing your hand over your eye.

‘Hardly.’ She snorts. ‘You’re turning yourself into a magic scanner of sorts. Your acceptance of the Kantai Steel allowed the exoskeleton graft to go without a hitch, but to think that it’d extend to this… the most I was expecting from you was a little nausea. The concentration I have you in order for your eye to heal… it’s miniscule compared to what I used on your arm.’ She picks up a notepad, her cables and cranes acting like extra limbs and picking up pen and holders. ‘Your body’s responding to the Fate Aqueous at a rate that’s rarely achieved. This is pretty exciting, all things considered.’

‘For you, maybe.’

‘What did you see when I removed the eye patch?’ She inquires, not missing a beat.

‘Everything.’ You say breathlessly. ‘I… saw what was keeping my arm together – and there were these lights that were around you and your gear; I think I smelt some peppermint or something on my nose. I dunno. Then, there were those cranes – I saw some sort of weird link between you and them and then everything just exploded.’ You scrunch your nose, leaning forwards. ‘It was like I was looking into a black hole or right into the sun.’ You look up at Akashi. ‘That bad?’

Akashi remains stoic.

For you, that might as well have been a death sentence.

‘I don’t know.’ She says neutrally, tapping her pad. ‘The Fate Aqueous treatment was used in line with your response to the treatment that enabled us to install the exoskeleton. We – I – didn’t know that this would have been a side-effect. Your eye’s in good health, but the trigger conditions; it’s crazy.

‘You said rarely – there have been cases, then?’

‘About four or five – I’ve only observed two, though.’

‘When was the last case?’ You inquire. If you had to live with this, then it was best for you to explore all possible avenues.

Akashi looks thoughtful.

‘The last known case, to my knowledge… was a private client of The Admiralty’s.’ She bites her lip, one of her cranes tapping her chin thoughtfully like an extra digit. ‘His son had gone blind and he wanted to try The Admiralty’s method of eye reconstruction and healing.’ She grimaces, probably remembering the whole slew of details. ‘Cost an arm and a leg for ‘em… but it worked. He was able to see things and more right after. I wasn’t present for that particular exercise, though.’

‘You said only around a fourth of patients responded to Fate Aqueous positively.’ It seemed like a huge chance to take on surgery, reconstruction or no. The chances of success were already slashed down to a quarter before you were dropped onto the table. ‘Seems like a huge risk to take.’

‘Lucky them, then. If we were going by the numbers, the most that would’ve happened was a purely aesthetic reconstruction – Fata Aqueuous does have its limits on humans… as you may know.’ She indicates your arm, which you lift. You did know it; underneath the metal was still your flesh and blood. Bone and flesh… useless. ‘We still haven’t cracked the variables when it comes to your bodily reactions to the fluid, but thankfully – being a Commander – it’s positive enough that we can at least build you back up a bit more.’ She gestures towards you with a pen, grinning. ‘That eye thing’s probably just a bonus.’

‘Bonus?’ You shoot her a look with your good eye.

She instantly give you an apologetic glance.

‘Bad choice of words.’ She states softly. ‘Your condition – I’m not going to pretend that it’s a bit of a blessing; by conventional medicine, the longest shot would’ve taken at least a few months to even get back a modicum of sight back; now you can see things humans can’t even begin to comprehend.’

‘The condition must have a name?’ Maybe you could check it out later.

‘Not really.’ Akashi shoots down your suggestion, lifting her hands in a gesture of surrender. ‘It’s so rare that all it’s called is rare occurrence. Self-descriptive.’

Something else hits you.

‘I didn’t have problems when I took it off for showers or sleep.’

Akashi instantly lights up, scribbling hastily into her pad.

‘Then there must have been something I did to trigger the effect. Fascinating!’

You’re not sure whether to roll your eyes or just let her be with her madcap antics.

‘If it needs a trigger… that means it’s not passive, but active.’ You catch onto that fact, lifting your hand over your eye but not quite opening it. You could feel a light pulse at the back of your head when you turn to Akashi, allowing you to draw your own conclusions as to what had triggered that violent overload of yours. ‘It needs something to stimulate it, right?’

‘I don’t think I like where this is going.’ Akashi begins worriedly, giving you a disapproving look.

You counter it with the toothiest grin you can manage. She doesn’t change her expression, slowly backing

‘I thought you were the madcap scientist. Where’s your sense of curiosity?’

‘It kind of dies when I think that I remember that I’m a medic first and a madcap scientist second.’ She replies in a dangerously sweet voice – and a smile to match. It reminded you of the Submarine’s not too long ago. ‘Especially when it concerns the idea of harm to someone who’s one of my patients.’

‘I’m not saying it’s a good idea.’ She gives you a flat look at that. To be fair, not many things that turned out to be medically revolutionary started out as good ideas, per se. What was to say that this would prove to be the exception to the rule without so much as a trial? ‘I am saying I’d like to try something. If I’m going to have to live with this, I’d like to see if I can control it in any way.’

‘This isn’t a cartoon or a movie.’ Akashi bends over – her gear vanishes in an instant, the holder one of her cranes had been clutching drop down to the ground, making her let out a frustrated growl to pick it up. ‘It’s not some kind of skill that you’re trying out to fight your enemies; what you will experience is intense nausea and very likely, damage from over-exertion. Whatever you see, it’s not something that humans are meant to be exposed to for any longer than it took you to get on your knees and puke all over the place.’

She indicates the spot on the ground where you had buckled and dropped.

‘I think that you’ve done enough for now.’ She tries to finish it with a tone of finality, but…

You’re a little bit too stupid to actually give up now.

You open your eye… and instantly get a jolt at the back of your head. Akashi goes agape at your insistence, before diving for the eyepatch to place it on you. You begin to see small wisps – little flames dancing on Akashi’s edge… you see your prosthetic in an entirely different way; it was as though it was your arm. Your flesh and blood arm as a whole, complete limb, again.

‘Akashi, summon your gear.’

‘You – !’

She curses you in languages you had yet to discover… before a blinding light almost knocks you over. Akashi stands, her lips in a thin line, and see the lines, the flames, and –

Then, the pain returns.

You bite back a scream as the agony makes itself known again – it’s as though a tiger is biting right on your skull. You grit your teeth so tightly, grinding your molars that they must have cracks in them from the sheer force by now. Your throat grows dry and your brain feels like it’s being stretched and crushed in the same breath; you try to steady yourself, taking in a myriad of sensations all at once. Akashi is calling for you – you must not have devolved into a hysteric mess as what you recognize as her form – a jumbled rainbow – nears you. You see whips of green and white stretch out across the shaking grey room; your bearings are off… enough for you to begin to hurl.

Commander!’ Her voice reaches your ears… and you regain what small measure of control you have.

You blink, maybe once but maybe a thousand times; for an instant, and the pain instantly dulls. The throbbing sensation is still there, but the pain is gone. Akashi – or what you assume to be Akashi – clutches your shoulder, holding you up. You steady your person, breathing in and out as the tent falls back into place. You see small wisps, trails and the like around the place, and Akashi… she looks so different to you now. You see something in place of where she would be, in her bikini – a flame? A rushing waterfall? You see her face, hands and feet, but also, something else… this must have been the closest your brain could come to comprehend the new sensations taken in by your newfound ability.

Your knees grow weak and you clutch at Akashi – her shoulder – to steady yourself. You feel like you’d just ran a mile… and were still running it; around you, you take in what looked like small orbs of a myriad of colors, sparkling rivers that would have been invisible to the typical man’s eyes. Akashi tries to catch your attention, but you’re not listening; tired as you are, you’re a little mesmerized by the sudden injection of color and light into the otherwise dull tent. More than that, you feel yourself being pulled – or more specifically, your vision being drawn to… everyone. You see walking shadows, left and right, walking against a white world – some alone, some with company – up and down and everywhere.

A vague sense of familiarity comes over you, but right now you just feel so tired… enough to take a nap, really? You feel like you’d run a marathon now – and you notice as your vision becomes clearer, the more exhausted your feel; it was as if you hadn’t stopped running at all. The pain is replaced by a deep tiredness, a fatigue. The more that you take in, the more you feel you’re expanding yourself; your brain feels stretched and mushed and your other senses are dulled… but the vision, the view of colors and shadows in a world of white… they’re completely clear.

You close your eye and let out a breath.

‘I need a glass of water.’

You see Akashi as she is, clad in her –

You raise your prosthetic to take a good look at your prize, revealing that you’d unwittingly stripped her of her top in that circus of confusion, much to her displeasure. You sheepishly hold it up and give your most diplomatic smile, to which Akashi crosses her arms under her bare breasts, regarding you with an annoyed glare. She snatches material right out of your hands not long after, her cheeks red as she dons it once more.

‘I think I can see fairy magic holding you here.’

Akashi gives you a bottle of water – you open it and down all you can, gulping messily.

‘You’re not seeing anything.’ Akashi corrects you. Her gear disappears soon after, and she gestures for you to remove your hand from your face – that had been the trigger, then; her rigging had put whatever changes your eye had into overdrive from either proximity or as a defensive maneuver. ‘You’re perceiving things differently – my summoning my gear’s probably what set your new senses off.’ Her lips thin into a line as she puts her hands on her hips. ‘What’s happened is that your eye’s exposure to Fata Aqueous has given your vision a heightened awareness of entities that have a magical or alchemical presence… but what really sets it off seems to be anything that has a link between a KanMusu Core and an Alchemical Synthesis of a higher level of concentration.’

‘Layman’s terms?’ You raise an eyebrow at her.

‘You can see Fairy Magic,’ she grudgingly concedes, ‘but KanMusu gear seems to be what triggers this ability. Your arm’s concentration of magic isn’t nearly enough to handle, so… a large, exposed magic source would have to be nearby to make it trigger without your

You nod. That much you understood.

‘Also.’ She adds, raising a mirror. ‘Your eye is glowing.

‘Oh, pretty.

It was a shimmering blue… that changed to green at times. It didn’t seem to be on your will, though, this time. The shift of green to blue seemed random, but it was definitely glowing a little; it was enough of a sight to be a conversation starter. Although, you notice your vision was a little less sharp now.

‘I think I’m a little myopic now.’ You frown, narrowing your right eye to get a better view. There was a little unbalance, but it wasn’t anything that you couldn’t handle. ‘Guess these things come at a price, huh?’

‘You’re lucky you’re not blind, Commander.’ Akashi presents your eyepatch again. ‘It looks like you’re going to be needing this. If that thing triggers in the RAY, I don’t want you out of commission for a mission’s timeframe.’

‘Better safe than sorry.’ You accept it, donning it right after. It felt right, somehow – and now with your condition, you actually had a legitimate reason to keep it on. ‘I hope it doesn’t whirr and click in the showers.’

‘If you get used to it… and if your KanMusu don’t try to summon their gear when your eye’s fully exposed, it won’t happen – although, I have to admit that your body being so receptive to the changes is a surprising turn.’ She leans against the dest, nodding solemnly. ‘It’s not unheard off, but I suppose that with you being the first Commander that had to go through such an extensive modification… it’s only natural that certain developments would occur.’

‘I’m the first Commander this sort of thing’s happened to?’

‘Like I said, the only other Fata Aqueous patients that needed similar treatment,’ she rubs her forearm, ‘were private clients – ones with fat pockets and nothing left to lose.’ She grimaces, letting out a snort as your eyes meet… and you see a dark amusement dancing behind her lime green eyes. ‘Besides, most Commanders end up going insane or brain dead over actual physical injuries; no Fata Aqueous is going to bring anyone back from that.’

Insane?

‘You read the fine print before you signed up, didn’t you?’ She taps the side of her head. ‘KanMusu death is mentally traumatic.’ You toss the bottle into a nearby can. ‘The feedback from the link the RAY provides give a sort of negative psychic feedback – Commanders who can’t handle it end up in mental institutions, or in some cases brain dead – there’s only so much trauma a single soul can take.’

It only ended up being another reason to enforce your vow to keep everyone alive.

You kick some dirt over where you’d puked – there was no sense in trying to mop up the dirt and grass – before the both of you leave the tent and into the evening sky; the sun was setting fast… and the day was getting colder as the day grew darker. The dark clouds showcase the coming rain that would arrive later, meaning anyone caught outdoors would end up wet and shivering. All over the MASH you see people gathering boxes and crates shifting them into shelter. They don’t bother Akashi, so used are they to the sporadic changes in weather.

Kaga was still in Akashi’s office upon your return, looking as though she had all the joy sucked out of her.

‘So,’ she begins coolly, raising an eyebrow as she looks from you to Akashi, ‘we’re done for the day? Because I think I want to get myself a nice warm shower.’

You open your mouth to speak.

‘Actually,’ you take an apologetic mode of voice, ‘I have business to attend to at Base. You go on ahead.’

Kaga nods curtly… but kisses you on the cheek before leaving.

After thanking Akashi for her help and promising not to throw yourself into situations that would have you bed-ridden and under her very caring hand, you leave as well, hailing a buggy outside the compound and heading straight to Yokosuka Base. It takes you some time, mostly due to the fact that now you had to share the road with several Imperial Army trucks. It’s the late evening when you finally reach there.

The place was more bustling than it had been the morning you had helped rescue Iowa. It actually resembled a market

Instead of a flat cement bed and several piles of rubble, there look to be several large tents that combined into what looked like a makeshift base. The Command Tent – or Command Tents were larger and more numerous, with several trailer units stationed at odd points serving as either resting stations or unit stations. You notice where once stood the main building and the office building was nothing but a flat bed where two mobile offices were stationed with a few smaller tents flanking them. There were people barking orders – you notice a hodge-podge of Imperial Army personnel and Admiralty Volunteers moving things from trucks into the tents, probably working to get matters back in order.

You see Ikazuchi and Teruzuki walking out from one of the trailers, and coming right behind them was…

Ooyodo!’ You wave at her to catch her attention.

‘Commander.’ Ooyodo bows respectfully, before gesturing for you to enter the trailer. ‘I was just about to start looking for you – this way, please.’

‘Heya, Commander!’ Ikazuchi waves cheerfully in your direction. You wave right back, offering a little smile for emphasis.

You walk into the trailer – it’s a little cramped for your liking, but you suppose with everything that was going around… it would suffice for its purpose. The place is very bare, save for several stacks of files lined up either side of the trailer unit on small wooden platforms. The Vice-Admiral was also present, clad in a more casual state than you were used to seeing him in. There’s a troubled look on his face – which only served to raise your anxiety.

Behind his desk was The Admiral, his stare unmistakeably solemn.

‘Thank you, Ooyodo.’ He gestures towards his Light Cruiser. ‘You can leave now. And lock the door when you leave, yeah?’

‘Yes, sir.’ She bows, exiting the trailer.

‘Admiral.’ You salute. The Admiral gestures for you to approach the table; you do with a sense of unease – were you in trouble? As far as you knew, you hadn’t done anything to remotely set him off… in the last few days, anyway. You think. Maybe.

‘Commander.’ He turns to The Vice-Admiral. ‘Vice-Admiral.

He gets to his feet, moving from behind the desk to the front and taking out his pipe.

‘I looked into your little inquiry a little further, Commander.’ He nonchalantly lights his pipe, taking a puff and looking outside the window. ‘It would seem that the state of affairs are a lot more dire than either of us expected.’

‘State of affairs?’

‘I looked into the status of the two missing Super Dreadnoughts Yamato and Musashi.’ He grimaces as he puffs on his pipe again, grimacing apologetically at The Vice-Admiral ‘Both of them were found to be in the… care of the Haszad Union some time back.’

Haszad?!’ The Vice-Admiral balks, looking from The Admiral to you. ‘Why would Haszad have them? From my understanding, both units were registered as MIA after a mission gone wrong along the straits. Their recovery status was right in the red when I read off the list. How could Haszad have recovered them?’

‘The Admiralty saw fit to clue me in on the sordid state of matters that led to their recovery by the other side.’ He looks to you. ‘I have to admit, I wouldn’t have given their files a second look if The Commander hadn’t pressed for me to look further into the matter, but right now, it isn’t of importance.’ He sets down his pipe on the ashtray, turning back to the view of the working men and women outside his window. ‘The Court of Admirals is employing every delaying tactic in can afford in regards to The Haszad Union’s proposal to join the Alliance. Their bargaining chips are the release of Yamato and Musashi – and the details of the mission that resulted in their loss and capture to be dead and buried.’

‘What are you talking about?’

‘The Admiralty,’ you tentatively begin, looking at The Admiral for approval. At his nod, you continue, ‘they were misusing Fairy Magitek – and Yamato and Musashi were the first to be equipped with it. A mission they went on after that – an assault on a Princess – went bad and the both of them ended up captured by The Union. Haszad is threatening to leak the fact that they misused Fairy Alchemy to the public – and to the Fairies…’

‘Which would lead the fairies to abandon humanity altogether.’ The Admiral finishes, clutching his pipe and taking a long puff.

So you’re telling me all that hubbub about The Union wanting to join up with Taiyouga is just them making chess moves to get into a better deal with The Admiralty?’ The Admiral lets out a mirthless chuckle, to which The Vice-Admiral groans into his palm.

You feel his pain, really.

Incredible.’ He lets out a sarcastic chuckle. ‘So The Admiralty’s been grabbed by the balls by Haszad. What do they have to gain from joining the Alliance, then? Last time I checked we weren’t exactly clashing mugs and singing songs.’

‘They want the MagiTek.’ You explain, catching The Vice-Admiral’s attention again. ‘Haszad’s not doing this out of the kindness of their hearts. They want exclusive access to all the technology and magic that The Admiralty and The Fairies developed for their own use.’ The Vice-Admiral lets out a dissatisfied grunt at the statement.

‘Right now they’re in a win-win situation.’ The Admiral adds, turning to the both of you. ‘Either they join The Alliance and get their way… or they crack Musashi and Yamato open and get it from them. There is no loss from either side of this equation; any route that they take will result in the acquisition of knowledge privy to only the highest of The Admiralty’s personnel.’ He sets down his pipe. ‘At this point, however, that is the least of our concerns.’

Our?

‘I called in a few favors from some old friends of mine to dig in on Musashi and Yamato’s state.’ His face ages ten years as he tries to go on, his voice even more gravelly than usual. ‘Both of them are alive but weak… prolonged deprivation from a Commander’s Stream or Fairy Magic has them on their last legs. We estimate that there are less than 48 hours before they completely expire.’

Expire?

‘That’s why The Admiralty’s throwing a delaying tactic.’ Seeing your confused state, The Vice-Admiral elaborates. ‘KanMusi, more than food and water, need Fairy Magic and our Streams to keep them grounded on this plane of existence. Without it, they fade away – die. They’re planning to let Musashi and Yamato die off and clean their hands of the whole damn matter. Haszad’s being played like a damn fiddle and they don’t even know it.’

‘They’re going to let Yamato and Musashi die? Just like that?’

‘If it keeps them clean and the Fairies in the dark… they’ll do anything.’ The Admiral approaches the both of you, holding a black envelope. ‘But we’re not them. My old contacts have already agreed to help us in re-acquiring them. I have told them of our situation and seeing as we’re trying to keep the Fairies uninvolved, the both of you will cooperate with them in order to ensure their return.’

From a paramilitary Commander to playing diplomat against the most powerful nation in the world? To think you were a jobless waif a few weeks ago.

‘It’ll be tricky.’ You admit. ‘Negotiations are going to be tough if they think they hold all the cards.’

The Admiral spares you a bemused glance.

‘Commander. Who said anything about negotiations?
