You released the Speak-No-Evil seal on your bare chest. With a nealy audible *pop* from your ears, you'd felt the air and sound rush back into the space around you like a vaccuum. The old man, black-haired head bandaged around one side of his face, slowly rose from his comfortable seat on the mossy log with Rin and approached you. A short, polite smile was on his face...

You feel surprisingly comfortable around him. Quite the time and place for an old man to be taking a morning walk. You adjust your own clothing as you jump to meet the man, waiting for you patiently. Out of the corner of your eye you see Tai nursing a crumpled looking Asa heaped against a tree...there is another man there helping him. His black, empty eyes assess the girl's wounds as he addresses Tai in treating her. He's wearing a Konoha headband. It seems the ninja from that village are particularly helpful...

"Amon-kun...I do not believe we have had the pleasure. I am called Danzo. This young man is my aide in my admittedly growing year. He prefers to be called Shi."

"Might I ask what brings you to join us in our small, morning respite? Your friend seems to be in alarming condition."

So you tell the wised old man everything: how you accidentally decrypted a scroll given to you by the merchant Hoki, how you were pursued through the Forest by -what you think they called themselves- the ROOTS, how you attacked and drove off the snake and the monstrous ninja, Orochimaru.

Danzo appears genuinely surprised by this troubling tale of events, accompanying your story with clipped expressions of concern, raised eyebrows, and reserved gasps of shock. He asks you about the flash of red eyes, to which you respond with honest ignorance. When you mention the pale-skinned ninja, he frowns.

"Orochimaru? That is a familiar name to all of us in the Leaf, no matter our age. The Sannin attacked you? But why would he do that?"

Again, you answer in honest ignorance. Danzo shakes his head, his stoic expression riddled with concern. "Whatever his reasons, Orochimaru attacking traveling strangers is most distressing. Though, he has been rumored to have been acting strange in recent times...I hope this does not sully Konoha in your eyes."

He walks with you -hands clasped behind him- back to the log he had been sitting on prior, his dignified stride out of place in these backwater woods. While diplomatic...you realize the man is notably stoic. You can't read anything just looking at him, eye calmly closed. You're used to being around Rin, Yoru, Asa, and Tai, so perhaps his inscrutable expression is just exaggerated in comparison?

He motions for you to sit as he hefts a small kettle placed nearby and pours a small cup of tea, offering it to you.

"How did Rin, Yoru, Tai, and Asa end up here, Mr. Danzo?"

He lets out a short chuckle on hearing you call him by the name. "Danzo is just fine, Amon-kun. Are those their names? Truly, I was as surprised to see them as you are now. Lady Rin stumbled upon us not too long ago, followed soon after by a fond face I never expected to see out in these parts."

Rin sits on the log next to you, visibly beaming from the title as she swings her legs in the air. Yoru, standing by the oaken old man, scratching his head in embarrassment. "Please Mr. Shimura, you're too kind. I wouldn't have imagined running into a honored member of the Konoha Council out here...let alone being taken in by him! Also, about the uh, task yo-"

Danzo cuts off the man with a small smile. "The pleasure was mine, Yoru-kun. Please, let us save business for later, when it is more appropriate."

"Now, for your other companions...I confess they alarmed me immensely when they were lead here by my attendant. The severity of their injuries is...unfortunate."

"Should I be too bold to ask...what was it that you read in those scrolls, Amon-kun? I promise the secret will be kept for us alone."

Though as quickly as it flashed, it was gone; Danzo's face is as patient and immersed as before. You write it off as your imagination...though you do feel a little uncomfortable, for some reason.

"A secret organization in the Hidden Leaf? What curious news. We will be sure to...take care...of this once we return to Konoha. As for these 'eyes of fate', I cannot say I have heard of them before. You would do well to forget about it, Amon. After all, you surely have more to deal with than the ramblings of some cult."

As he speaks to you, his face concerned like a disapproving father...you start to understand what was bothering you earlier. Despite the small expressions...no, perhaps because of them...you feel some sort of discomfort. They're just too...expected. Danzo seems to be formality and politeness, giving the appropriate responses to everything you have mentioned thus far. It's too...prepared, inhuman almost. Perhaps he's simply that calm? You suppose the trait would make for an excellent advisor or councilman.

But, still...it's off.

"Amon-kun, I must admit my burdening you with my curiosity once more...but what exactly are these markings that cover your body?"

"It's just a project of mine," you respond coolly to the man, distrust gradually growing. "Danzo...what are you doing out here, so far from the Hidden Leaf?"

He doesn't answer the question immediately...just staring at you, inscrutable. He finally gives a quiet, knowing smile. "It is most unlucky to ask travelers where they are going, Amon-kun. Whatever one seeks on the roads is a secret for him alone, lest...misfortune...befall him-

...Though, with Shi by my side I worry not. We are simply making a trip to the borders, to note the state of our great nation in these times of war. To travel for the sake of traveling is an intimate pleasure in itself, one I'm sure you understand quite well."

You eye the man, suspicious of his honeyed words. But, before you can say anything else, he rises from his seat and motions to the empty-eyed attendant who just finishing treating Asa. "Quite a strange sight, seeing the Uzumaki's Adamantine Binding Seal tattooed on a foreigner..." Danzo muses aloud.

This strikes you immediately. "I don't recall telling you anything about a seal, Danzo."

He looks at you briefly, a surprised expression reflecting on his face. "What use as a council would I be to Konoha'scompetant leadership if I did not know the Village's own abilities? Take care, Amon-kun...the roads can be quite dangerous in these dark times."

Danzo strides solemnly to the main road with Shi, before pausing and turning back slightly to address Rin. "It is a great pleasure to see a comrade of the Hidden Leaf alive and well, Lady Nohara. It would seem the rumors of your death at the hands of Kirigakure were...curiously exaggerated. Your teammates will be ecstatic at your return, surely... Good day to you."

And with that, Danzo disappears into the leaves of the forest.

Danzo walks along the road, Uchiha lapdog silently patrolling by his side. While quiet, the old shinobi is well aware the ninja has already perceived everything in the Forest within at least a mile radius. "He's back," the Uchiha, eyes red, announces to his leader.
A small white snake slithers onto the dirt path and up the the bandaged man. "You were careless, Orochimaru. Thankfully, your failure was in name only this time. It would seem we may have stumbled onto something...interesting."

The snake hisses, agitated. Danzo regards it coldly. "Failures are not tolerated, even for a Sannin. Their lives will not be yours to take as of now. Your orders are to return to the village...though you may freely observe them as you see fit."

As the serpent slithers angrily back into the bushes, Danzo frowns. Despite not killing any of the group...the snake smelled thickly of blood. Orochimaru...what is he up to?

The feeling of the early morning sunlight on your face has never been more welcome than now. Exiting the clustered trees of the forest with your companions by your side, you nearly kiss the ground in appreciation. Well, you honestly would if you weren't carrying the unconscious, ragged Asa in your arms. She's...cute when she sleeps, actually. She looks like different person, more vulnerable, than the usual confident, decisive, dominant Asa you've dealt with so far.

...you...you're definitely getting tired, that's all.

You feel a strong heat next to your right arm and turn to see a red-faced Rin giving you a stink eye from the side. "Enjoying yourself, Amon? You sure look like it."

...you become acutely aware of where your hands are holding the unconscious girl. You opt to just shake your head at Rin, instead of revealing your steady loss of composure, much to her frustration. Tai shuffles, what injured, at the rear, while a relieved Yoru leads happily from the front into the woodland fields of Konoha. At least someone is excited.

As you continue onwards...your knees begin to wobble, then nearly collapse. You...you're more tired than you thought. You realize the "overheated" feeling you had after using and locking the Seal of Babylon hasn't gone away and most of your body feels exhausted, stretched thin.

"Let's stop for a while, everyone. I don't know how much longer I can push forward with everything that we just went through."

Your companions, even a notably bummed Yoru, agree wholeheartedly. While it may be only around 9am in the morning...your camp is fully set in the long grasses alongside of the dusty road. The sun hugs the campsite and it's tired members as they wind down from the series of exciting, and horrifying, events. You recline in the long grass, your exhausted mind buzzing with too many questions to collapse from the lack of sleep just yet.

You manage to pull yourself up out of the comfortable, grassy bed and limp over to the similarly recovering Asa. Her chocolate skin is bruised and cut in places and her cerulean hair is frizzed. Usagi is snuggled under her arm, apparently summoned recently by the kunoichi. She sees you approach with an expression of legitimate surprise plastered on her face before it changes to one of brief embarrassment. She tries to put forth a -transparently forced- confident face as you approach.

Asa blinks again, a slow blush spreading across the brown cheeks on her dazzled face. She begins to giggle a little, covering her mouth as she does so. With her free hand she playfully pushes you away a little bit, leering at you from the side. "You really are too nice for your own good, wonderboy."

She curls up slightly, hugging her knees as her small smile curls into a frown. Her depressed eyes tell another story entirely though as she talks. "I...lost my nerve a little bit, I suppose. I just haven't felt so useless, so weak since..."

She shakes her head, reluctant to continue. "Look, I'm just not the kind of girl to be a damsel in distress. I like to -I need to- take action. I just couldn't back there, when I needed to most...I-I guess that means I failed."

The odor of burnt tobacco fills the air as you approach your brother monk, coughing from the lingering ash as you do so. Since when does Tai smoke? You haven't seen anyone smoke before, really, save for a few guests passing by through the Water Temple...but Tai?

You sit down next to the monk in the grass, hiding your nausea from the stench. Tai glances at you, casually exhaling a thick stream of smoke from his nose, and puts the hand-rolled cigarette on a flat rock next to him. While somewhat relaxed, he looks haunted now that you notice it.

"Since when do you smoke? Myatsuu certainly wouldn't approve."

Tai snaps at you "How about you get eaten by a overgrown reptile?"
He shudders, shaking his head as he leans back on his hands. "Sorry, you didn't deserve that, Amon. I haven't smoked in a long time...but I guess the stress of life on the road again makes old habits come back hard."

Life on the road again? You realize you don't know as much about Tai as you thought. After all, he'd been at the Temple for as long as you had...at least a decade. At nearly 26, you'd assumed Tai had simply been there all his life too...maybe not? Tai idly scratches his neck, a thin scruff of facial hair beginning to grow across his face.

You pick up the small figurine, but grow hot in the face as you realize its smooth, wooden curves are carved into the still-life form of a nude woman.

"Since when did you become an artistan, Tai?"

You look to Tai, your expression a bit more judgemental than just questioning, but he nonchalantly takes another long drag of his cigarette instead of answering. You turn the figure over in your hands, beginning to admire the innumerable intricacies painstakingly cut over time innumerable...

The woman is naked, yet the expression on her face is one of the utmost comfort and grace. Her body is twisted, as if caught in the middle of a moonlight dance. She cradles an instrument, a harp, within one of her slender arms like a child, clutching it against her bare chest...

"It was something I picked up on the fringes of the Land of Tea, a backwater country far to the south. There was an older coot who lived there back then, he took me in for a while. Treated me like the son he never had. It must have been...more than a decade ago, wasn't it? Time sure does fly."

His eyes narrow, as if he is trying to see something far into the distance. He takes another drag of the shortening filament between his fingers. There's movement from the corner of your eye and Yoru sits down with the two of you, nose wrinkled. "Smoking, Tai? Never took you for the type."

"Everyone has a vice. You too?"

"I've been around a few who have, but I never tried myself. I always enjoyed the smell, though. It kind of reminds me of my dad."

Tai smirks ruefully as takes out a thin sheet of paper and a small pouch of what looks to be brown, shredded leaves from his gi. You watch as he carefully layers the tobacco, packing it gently, then rolls the sheet into a small cylinder with just his fingertips -a delicate touch almost uncharacteristic for such a rough man. He hands the finished product to the impressed Yoru and lights a match for him.

"Consider this one on the house- to the Sins of our Fathers, Yoru."

As they both inhale deeply, you realize just how much this means you don't know about Tai. He spent nearly the first half of his life outside the Water Temple...

He nods his head, solemnly. "To take the monastic vows is a commitment few take in their lives, Amon. Many of the monks at the Water Temple had lives from before: some bakers, some laborers, some...some were just lost. The kids who grew up surrounded by these teachings, people like you, Amon, were the real monks. The rest of us just hoped to become better people."

Tai says this matter-of-factly as you listen, curious as to what this man's life was before.

"Myself- I led a small company of mercenaries as their captain."

Yoru chimes in, eyebrow raised. "A captain? But..you couldn't have been more than-"

"...15. I was about 15 when I first lead my men into battle. I was wild and headstrong, proving myself early on. My father had been a wandering sellsword himself, so I guess you could say the life was just in my blood. A world like that might be a hell to some...but to sinner like me, it was perfect.

I didn't know any better. Until...she came into my life."

Tai finishes his cigarette, ashing the embers against the stone next to him. Yoru thanks him for the story and goes back to his work. Tai turns, smirking at you. "That's all I can say for now. You should get some rest, Amon. I can't be carrying you all the time, after all."

You chuckle back to him. Getting up, you....

Taking your leave of Tai, you walk across the hodgepodge camp, past the road, and into the lightly shaded woods where you had seen Rin picking wildflowers earlier. Sure enough, she sits near a few puddles in the ground, surrounded by the meadow of flowers. She doesn't notice you approach until you've already sat down next to her, startled a bit by the sudden entrance. Rin smiles wide when she realizes it's you.

"What have you been up to, Rin?"

She picks the flowers idly, arranging them into small boquets around her. "...did you think Hoki was a bad person, Amon?" She asks you abruptly.

There that is again, her teammates...Rin hasn't mentioned them much, but they seem important to her.

Rin shuffles her feet in the flowers, picking three white lilies out of them. She holds up the first, "There was our sensei, Minato. He was a goofy guy, the kind you would expect to be a bit of a pushover to be honest. But...Minato, The Yellow Flash as he's known now, might be the most powerful shinobi alive- it's almost scary when you think about it. He always looked out for our best interest, though..."

She looks at he second flower fondly. "Then there was...Kakashi. He was always so determined, so focused. I...I always found myself wanting him to succeed, wanting to stand by his side. He was always a loner though, until..."

She gazes mournfully at the last flower. "...Obito died. Things just weren't the same after it happened. He was always so energetic, ready to take on any challenge. He was the bravest of us. I just wish we had another chance with him, to tell him how much he had mattered to us...to me..."

As Rin begins to tear up, you put your arms around her. You stand up together in a hug as she cries into your chest.

"We all change, Rin. But bonds like those never will. They'll still be proud to see who you've become, Demon or not. You'll always have them...and me. After all, a promise is a promise."

She looks up to you, cheeks still wet with tears. "Amon..."

As you stand embraced in the field of wildflowers, Rin begins to blush again. But, this time she calmly shuts her eyes and leans into you. She smells of flowers and the sea breeze, strangely, but you can't think about it more as she slowly closes the distance between your faces. Your heart begins to pound in your chest. Rin...is Rin really...does she want...

You hear...someone screaming nearby? There are shouts as your glassy eyes watch the swordsman move away for some reason. There is a shine in the corner of your vision, as something that looks like it could be splinters fly through the air around you. Your legs give out beneath you as you collapse onto your chest in the white flowers below, striped red with your blood.

They...remind you of the orchids in the courtyard, back at the Temple. Myatsuu...always did like them. Now you see why.

Rin's blurry face appears in the spots between your vision. She's saying something- crying? You smile weakly. At least she's safe...
Wherever you go, the souls of those closest to you will always follow

As your vision is consumed by the enveloping darkness, the last thing you hear is the sound of waves crashing along the beach.

Far down along the beach you see a familiar face, robes billowing in the salty ocean breeze.
