You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

Olwen sleeps nestled against you while you stare at the ceiling. You'd like to get up, but you want to let Olwen sleep a little longer.

The Olstren delegation arrived, presented you with a few chests full of gold, silver and jewels and then spent the rest of their time in Degfford drinking wine. Reagan recommended that you treat them coldly in case some of them were in Duke Ferrid's employ. It might convince him to attack you sooner.

Any such attack is a while away though. It's still a little to early to raise and army and Myrddin's spies haven't reported any such efforts, although food supplies are a little harder to come by. Duke Ferrid seems to be hoarding in preparation. That's a good sign for you plans.

The door creaks open and Eleri walks into your bedroom. She's wearing… not much.

"Good morning, your highness." She sits down on the edge of your bed. "I hope I didn't wake you."

"I was already awake, Eleri," you say. "Is there something I can help you with?"

"As a matter of fact, Delyth and I have been talking," she says. "We'd like you to start working on the city temple, especially if you plan on going to war."

"I can see why Delyth is interested," you say, "but what's your stake in this?"

"A temple is a centre of culture," Eleri says. "We can use it to establish a school, then move on from there. The temple itself might not mean much, but it's still important to the city's future. We would be very grateful if you could make it your next priority."

Eleri gets on all fours on top of you and you reach out to stroke her cheek.

"While your body is quite enticing," you say, "I've enjoyed your gratitude often enough in the past that one more time won't make much of a different. But since you asked, I'll deal with the temple."

"Oh, no, this is just because I heard from Princess Reagan that you were jealous of that Olstren knight," Eleri says. "I just wanted to assure you my interests were, unlike yours, quite exclusive. Then I got in the mood."

>"Sorry, I really do need to get to work."
>[Dilettante/d12] "In that case, let's affirm your interests."

"In that case…" You sit up and run your hands down Eleri's sides. "Let's affirm your interests."

Eleri giggles and wraps her arms around your neck.

"Does the cold-hearted prince need to be taught true love by the poor, sultry commoner artist?"

"I've learned that lesson a few times," you say, "but it never hurts to ask for a refresher."

Olwen groans and sits up.

"Could you two not have sex right next to me?"

"Sorry," you say. "We've just finished."

"Yes," Olwen says, "I can tell."

"And I could tell how many times you finished last night." Eleri gets off you to kiss Olwen. "Consider this payback."

"I could've done without the interest," Olwen says.

You get up, clean up and get dressed. There's nothing like a little exercise in the morning to wake you up for the day.

"So the temple. Who else is interested?"

"Seren would know more about religion in this region, I think," Eleri says. "And Myrddin is interested in everything that goes on in this city."

"Delyth is the expert," you say. "I'll go talk to her first."

"In that case, remind her to thank me later," Eleri says.

You climb down the stairs and find Delyth and Esyllt in the study.

"Good morning, Delyth, Esyllt." You kiss them both on the cheek. "Delyth, Eleri told me you wanted to start work on the temple as soon as possible? Oh, and you'll have to thank her later."

"Yes, I was just talking to Esyllt about it," Delyth says. "We're trying to figure out of tithes could help fund our military."

"It's basically another form of tax, but it's a more palpable one for most people," Esyllt says. "People are more sympathetic to dead heroes than to live ones, for some reason."

"It's a benefit of hindsight," you say. "But let's start with the basics. Do you have a location in mind?"

"The current temple is located near the artisans' workshops," Delyth says. "It hasn't been taken care of properly, but we can renovate it. I also found a rundown house in one of the poorer quarters that we could use if we want to put the temple closer to the people. The best option would be to build an entirely new temple outside the city, but it would also be the most expensive."

"Of course, building in a poorer district is much less likely to get you those tithes," Esyllt says. "It'll be worthwhile if you want to sell people hope for cheap, however."

>"We'll work with what's already there. Let's see the current temple."
>"The poor could certainly use more hope. Show me that rundown house."

Are there enough people and priests for multiple temples? We could turn the old house into an additional small simple temple for the poor.
And after the war we can build a great new temple outside the City

"We'll work with what's already here," you say. "Let's see the current temple."

"Hmmm… it might do the people some good to restore familiar landmarks," Delyth says. "Okay, I'll show you the place. It's not that far from here."

The weather is still warming up, so you put on some light coats before leaving. You wrap your arm around Delyth's waist and pull her a little closer for warmth.

The temple is… not what you would normally consider a temple. The ones in Aurwain are made of stone for a reason: stone lasts longer than wood. The fence that surrounds the property is falling apart, the temple's walls are visibly rotten in quite a few spots and several sections of the roof are outright missing.

"This is going to require more than a little renovation," you say. "In fact, I'm not sure this'll be easier than building from the ground-up."

"It's actually not as bad as it looks," Delyth says. "I had some masons check the foundation and it's still in good condition, as are the basement and the support pillars. There's no risk that it'll fall on top of us, which is more than what I can say about the house I was eying."

So the stonework is fine and it's just the woodwork that needs to be completely replaced. Then you remember something.

"What about the furniture?"

"There's none left," Delyth says. "I think it was used for firewood a few years back. But we were going to need new furniture anyway, so I don't think it makes a difference."

"That should be possible," Delyth says. "We have the labour force for it, but getting the stone around here might be a little expensive.

You walk around the temple, trying to gauge how much material you'll need. Architecture isn't your specialty, but you at least need an idea of how exactly how much money you'll have to spend before you can proceed.

Overall, you estimate it won't be too expensive. The temple is mostly designed for private prayer rather than mass congregation and there's no live-in priest - yet - so it doesn't need to be too big.

"Now that we've decided what we're going to do about the structure, what else do we need?"

"We'll need some decorations to make it more lively," Delyth says. "It doesn't need to be gaudy, but it should have a warm, welcoming appearance. Paintings, stained glass windows, statues, that sort of thing."

>[Merchant/Autosuccess] "Paintings will do."
>[Merchant/d12] "Stained glass would add some colour."

"Why not all of it? It would make for a most impressive temple, no?"

"I don't want to make it too difficult for you," Delyth says, "but I would certainly want to try it. If Degfford is to become a great city, we need a temple that represents its accomplishments."

"I'll find a way to make it work," you say. "What else to do we need?"

"I can run the temple on my own, at least for a while," Delyth says, "but it would be nice to attract more worshippers, maybe even pilgrims. We need to spread word about the temple throughout the kingdom."

Finally, something that won't cost you anything, and might even bring in revenue.

You can rely on some of your connections, such as Olwen's father. He's a respected paladin and he has an excuse to visit Degfford. It wouldn't be out of character for him to invite some of his old war buddies to talk about the old times at the temple. Others would want to come just for a chance to get close to him and share their own tales of bravery and war.

The second option is to just spread the word. Career soldiers and mercenaries often travel the kingdom, and Degfford leads to both Svekka and Olstren for those who wish to look for opportunities elsewhere. Degfford and its temple could become a regular stop on their journeys.

Finally, there's the more arrogant option. You're expecting a war and once it's over, you'll need to celebrate your inevitable victory. The temple can become the centre of these celebrations, and a win against Olstren would attract people from all over the kingdom.

>[Sovereign/1d8] "I'll invite Olwen's father over and have him bring some people along."

"Is there anything else you need?"

"That's everything we have to deal with for the temple," Delyth says. "But if you don't mind, I'd like it if you could hold me again on our way back…"

You smile and put one arm around her as you head back home.

Upon your return, you smell Eleri cooking in the kitchen.

"Welcome back," she says. "Did everything go well with the temple?"

"We decided how we're going to rebuild it," Delyth says.

"I just need to drop the orders off with Myrddin," you say. "Do you know where he is?"

"He's with the princess in the study," Eleri says. "I think they want to talk to you about something."

"Right, I'll let Olwen know," you say. "It would help if the invitation came from her."

"She's training in the yard," Eleri says.

You go over to the backyard and pick up your sword along the way. You don't get nearly enough training as you should these days.

Olwen is practicing standard drills, her form as perfect as always.

"I've got some news for you," you say. She's not the slightest bit distracted by your arrival.

"What is it?"

"I'm inviting your father for a visit."

Olwen nearly trips on her own feet even though they're not actually moving.

"Are you sure that's a good idea?"

"I don't see why not," you say. "The temple needs pilgrims and he should come by to see you. My mother stayed for months."

"Hmm, well, I suppose it'll make him feel a little better if he sees I'm not pregnant," Olwen says. "Are you going to introduce him to your wife, other consort and three concubines while he's here?"

"Sure. Why not?"

"Because then my father will know about our degenerate sex orgies," Olwen says. "I mean, I certainly don't mind fucking all your girlfriends on the side when I want some diversity, but it's not exactly what my father expects of his heir."

"I'd be surprised if he didn't know already," you say. "It wouldn't exactly be difficult for him to find out. The rumours must be all over Aurwain by now."

"There's a difference between hearing rumours and seeing it first-hand," Olwen says, "but I understand what you mean. I'm just a little worried about it."

You hug Olwen from behind and kiss her neck. "It'll be fine," you say. "I'll make sure he's too busy visiting the city to care."

"And if you fail, I'll make sure it all becomes your problem," Olwen says. "I'll send him a letter asking him to come as soon as I can."

After settling things with Olwen, you pay a visit to Myrddin and Reagan in the study.

The study is even messier than usual. Books and ledgers are stacked up high and there are papers all over the desks and floor.

"You've certainly been busy," you say. "What's the emergency now and why haven't I heard about it?"

"Technically, it hasn't happened yet," Myrddin says.

"We're working on how to deal with Degfford's development if and when you do march to war," Reagan says. "Delyth says you've made a decision about the temple?"

"Yes, it just needs to be formalized."

"That gives us a little more to work with," Myrddin says. "Right now, we have a pavilion, a militia, some contacts among the locals, a market, an alchemy workshop and soon, a temple."

"With that, we can implement a census in Degfford, expand the city market into a full merchant district or use the imminent temple as a starting point to build a proper school," Reagan says. "This will take time, especially the preparation, so we'd like to start now."

"That sounds reasonable," you say. "What are the benefits of each option?"

"The census is necessary if we want an army or a proper secret police," Myrddin says. "The merchant district would help us sustain an army as well."

"Once we build a school, we'll be able to teach the classics," Reagan says. "That will allow us to build a theatre, which I'm sure Eleri would appreciate, as well as hire more clerks later on."

"Start with a census," you say. "We need one to properly manage this city."

"An excellent decision, your highness," Myrddin says. You're certain he's only into it so much because he really wants his secret police.

"Oh, and by the way, Olwen's father will probably pay us a visit soon," you tell them. "I need his help to make the temple more famous, but I'd like him to meet the family as well. We might as well get it over with. Olwen's a little worried about it."

"I'm sure her father will be supportive of the overall situation," Reagan says. "His house is profiting greatly from it, after all."

"Still, Olwen would prefer if we didn't bring up what we do in the bedroom."

"There's no need to worry about that, dear," Reagan says. "We're quite capable of maintaining a dignified appearance."
