"Can we go home yet?"
"No."

You continue to push the girl further and further into the wilderness.

"But it's late."
"I don't care."

The forest almost seems to extend upward, and grasp at the moon.

"-And I can't see my hand in front of my face."
"Then don't look."

You are Yuuki Kuchinashi, the hero of the distant lands of Bruschetta.
You're also on a mission, and you won't let whining or incompetence stray you away from the path this time.

"Can we at least take a rest?"
Oh for crying out loud.

"We're almost there, right? How much further?"
"I don't know, a mile?"

"We'll cover that in a few minutes."

-Where were you? Oh yes.
Today, you're out in the middle of the wilderness at the dead of night daftly searching for a missing scoundrel.
Okay, maybe that doesn't sound like the most sane thing to do, but you have your reasons.

Earlier, someone took control of a much younger person than you using some-kind-of-magic-you-don't-know-what. When you went to question that younger person's guardian about it; they deflected the blame to a completely different person.
When you came back to check on that guardian, she was gone.

So, now, you're in a tough spot. You can't just say 'forget about her' and return empty-handed. That guardian also took someone very important to Kayda. Without that someone; Kayda could very well die within a few weeks.
A few weeks seems like a long time, but it also gives Clair a long time to find a place to hide and never come out.

Besides! You got a cunning detective to show you the way! Someone who managed to find where Clair was going even before she went there!
Isn't that righ-

"Ohhh, I can't go on!" She jumps off her mount and starts to slow down on-foot. "Just a few minute break, okay? I need to stand up!"

>No.
>Get back on.
>Pffft OKAY FINE! Five minute break!
>Okay, you set up camp for the night. I'll just run ahead and attack this place.

"Well- I'm just saying, I enjoy a nice ride through Gallete's countryside, but the chafing is really getting to me."

"Uh huh." You idly nod.

"Also- I'm not really an adventurer, I don't have callouses on my palms for gripping reins, and I don't have the calfs needed to stay on a saddle for days at a time."

"Right." You try to concentrate on the forest surrounding you, and not the idle banter of your companion.

"Also- Um, Also!" She uncomfortably climbs back onto the saddle. "The hard leather is really rubbing me, down there. And all. I'm sort of sensitive! And I don't know how to ride side-saddle to keep it from-"

"FffffFFFFFFT OKAY! STOP!" You raise your voice higher than what would be normally acceptable inside of enemy territory. "Just, stop! Stop talking about that!"

"..Well, you just don't understand that I'm not a hero, and I can't just-"
"Five minute break." You state before she can continue that line of thought any further. "Just, five, minutes."
"Good! Good, That's long enough for me." She orders her cercle to stop. "Just, long enough for me to get feeling back in-"

"I don't care." You interrupt her, "In fact, tell me more about where we're going. What does it look like?"

"Oh! oh, well. Good news. I actually have a picture!"

Detective Suzette flicks her hand, and a tiny orb of light hovers near her shoulder. She reaches back into her detective bag and pulls out a slip of parchment.
It's a hand-drawn picture of the building. It looks almost like the kind that architects use to make sure the edges of buildings are square.

"This was in Gallete's records, and it's where Clair is hiding. One mile up the road, on the bank of the river."

"I'm going."
"Wait, WHAT?!"

"That's all I needed to know, I think I can find it." You quickly puff out the small, glowing ball of light. "In the meantime, you set up camp and I'll meet you back here if I find anything."

"But-"
She stops herself from saying something, and then sets her bag down.
"Okay, you're the hero after all."

Darn right, you are.

--

You leap and bound between trees, posts, columns, and towers on your way up the path.
This place seems particularly well-guarded. It must be the villas that all the rich people in Gallete own. You're no less than a few hundred feet away from the one the Detective was mentioning, now.

You hop upon a sturdy oak and crouch. The tree sways slightly, but nothing gives away your presence.

Down below, the house draws into sight. It has the decorative buttresses and chimneys present on the drawing.
There's a dim light inside.

>COMMENCE ASSAULT!

No, no. It's time to take this tactfully.
As in, not approach this the way Jack would.

You need to be careful, and swift. If she has any more of that wine stuff; she could chug it and disappear in an instant.

Which is why you decide to stick to the rooftops.
With a bound, you're on top of the mansion. Your feet carefully navigate between ceramic roof tiles, and wooden trusses.

Carefully, you peel back a section of tiling, and peer inside.
Nothing.
There's no one on the second floor.

Just to be certain; you narrowly place your foot onto the second floor patio and peek inside one of the bay windows.

Nothing.

The second floor doesn't even seem to be lit at all.
Working your way down; you climb onto the garden trellas in the backyard. Silently, you swing down and plant your feet in the soft grass.
If your grandfather saw that; he would be very proud.

You inch closer to the first-floor window, and have a glance inside.
Nothing.

The light appears to be coming from a room on the other side of the house.
Your hand inches into the window frame, and you pull yourself inside.

The light draws closer, and closer. Still, no one in sight. Is it too late? Maybe they're in a basement?

On the table in front of you is a lamp, a letter, and a bottle.
You already have a bad feeling about this.

Slowly, your hand reaches for the letter, and you unfurl it.

'ATTN: To whom it may concern.'

Well, at least it doesn't list you by name.

'My cover is blown. For further correspondence, find me on the ring. My new number is 56. - C'

Okay, that's a good start.

'PS: If, for whatever reason, this letter falls into the wrong hands. Then transcribe the message on the back and burn this letter.'

Message on the back?
You turn the letter over, and are greeted with a separate letter in different hand-writing.

'Dear Captain Albator.'
Uh oh.
'Yes, it is true that I have had some hand in recent events, but I can assure you it is not as bad as it looks.'

Somehow, you don't believe her.
'It's also true that I am in possession of Wiki-kaida-'
That bitch didn't even spell Kayda's name right.

'-'s summoner. I am certain that you are eager to get them back much like I am eager to make a bargain. I offer you a trade: One of your adult heroes, for Wiki-kaida's summoner.'

..Is she an idiot?

'I assure you it's a fair trade. Wiki-kaida is merely a child hero, she's not as strong, capable, and will not last as long without her summoner as opposed to any of the adults. You, and every one of your cohorts, can last many months without being in danger; I can assure you. If you agree to my offer, simply drink some of the included flask of wine. Come alone. I will know if you try to cheat this deal.

-Clair'.

You fold the letter and put it in the sleeve of your outfit.
If this is here, then there's a chance that Clair may still be around!

You stalk through the house, clinging to shadows, and moving like the wind.

You come to an empty room in the adjoining hall.
This must be it, there must be some kind of secret here!

With a pull, you find an uneven portion of floorboard. A trap door, maybe?
Your hand yanks and-
-and several planks of wood instantly crack under your iron grip. The sound causing birds roosting in the nearby tree to flutter away into the night.

So much for stealth.

You drop the facade and continue going through the house. You empty every drawer, every closet. Then you work on every crawlspace, and every stairwell.

Nothing.

In fact, you can't find any evidence that anyone was ever staying here at all.

Of course, someone had to be staying here. This letter is from a messenger.
Unless, Clair left the letter here expecting Jack to find it.

You suppose it does make sense, but that's still far smarter than you want to give her credit for.

With one last walk-through of the house; you come to the conclusion that it's completely empty. Just to be sure; you inspect the mansion from the outside one last time.

Then, with a leap, you're on your way back to the detective.

--

"EEK~!"
"Shh! It's just me!"

The fair lady you just startled has already retreated to a nearby tree and jumped up its branches.
She is now peering down on you from the darkness.

"No, no, come down. Here Suzette. Suzette, come here."
"W- w- w- w- w- OH! Yuuki!"

Slowly, she descends branch-by-branch until the cat-eared detective is back on solid ground.
"Don't do that!"

"No promises." You smile, "But in the meantime. Look what I found."
"Wait! Don't hand it here!"

She reaches into her bag of tricks, and pulls out a white glove.
Carefully, she pinches the letter by the cloth of the glove, and opens it.

"..56?"
"No, read what's on the back. It's a ransom letter."

She carefully reads the printing on its face, but then she reaches into her bag.
Out of it, she has what appears to be a brush.

With a sweep; she covers the letter in a fine, white powder!
"..What are you doing?"
"Look."

She snaps her fingers again, and the entire campsite becomes almost as bright as day.
Her fingers are pointing to several splotches on the page.

"These are 'Fingerprints'. Everyone's fingers has a unique marking on them. I'm guessing this weird swirly print is yours, but there are two other prints here. Both of them have the three-dot marking that bearkind typically have."
"So, what does this mean?"

"It means, I can use these prints to find her accomplices." Suzette grins.

"But what about the letter? What should I do?"
"Oh, that? Well. I guess you should contact this 'Captain Albator'. Whoever that is. Definitely do not go along with it before then."

Funny, his name does sound strangely foreign when you put the 'captain' out in front.

"But what about the letter? What should I do?"
"Oh, that? Well. I guess you should contact this 'Captain Albator'. Whoever that is. Definitely do not go along with it before then."

'Do not go along with it?'

"Why not?"
"What do you mean, 'why not'?"

"It seems like a decent trade." You think about the terms that Clari has put forth. "What can she do about an adult hero, anyway? No prison can hold us, and she's just one person. An entire army didn't even manage to kidnap one child-hero."

"Well, for one, I'm worried about the wine." The detective eyes the bottle closely. "I'm worried-"
"It's just teleporting wine." You shake the bottle some. "It can't do anything but put us somewhere that I can't easily come back from. It's an inconvenience."

"Let me finish." The detective brushes the bottle with her fine, white brush. "What if it's not the teleporting stuff that I've been hearing about? What if this is just standard ol' poison?"

You blink, and don't really understand the notion here.
"Why? why would it be poison? Would poison even work on me?"

"I don't know, but if her goal is to disable heroes, then that's what I would do at least. I wouldn't bother just teleporting them somewhere."

You think about the sentiment. Even if, theoretically, you're immune to things like poison; it's still something that you're not sure anyone has ever tried before. Perhaps they, too, thought that poison would be ineffective against heroes.

"So what do we do?"
"Definitely do not drink it." She folds the letter, and places it in her bag. "Let's look at the evidence, look at our options, and make a decision with the other heroes. There might be someone who is far better to send than you for this."

"Why? Because you think I can't handle Clair?" You feel almost insulted.

"No." She continues, "Because I think there might be someone else more expendable than you."

You reflect upon her words for a brief moment.

"That's awful." You state, flatly.
You turn to face the detective in the dim glow of the campfire.

"You're awful."
"Well, it's true. I'm sure Biscotti has far more footsoldiers, knights, peasants, and prisoners they could be testing the wine out on than a hero."

"You're an awful person." You grumble, and lean back. "Though, you are right. I'm sure Aligot has a better way of testing what the wine does than just drinking it and hoping for the best."

"Exactly! Let him drink it!"

What is it with cats?
Why are cats all *that* way?

"Fine.. whatever." You stand up, and can feel the weight of exhaustion at the corners of your eyes. "I think we should head back."

"Wait.. head back.. now?!"

"What should we do? Wait until morning for the entire castle to go nuts trying to find me?"

She opens her mouth to answer, but nothing comes out.

"Snuff the fire, and get on the bird."
"Aww."

--

You're on the road again, and all has been quiet. There isn't much to look at in the dead of night, on the road. Most people would have pitched camp for the night and not traveled at this time.
Not you, though. You're not sure you could sleep right now even if you wanted to.

You have a terrible thought about all of this.
What if the goal was to just capture Jack? It was addressed to him, and everything.

Would he have thought twice about drinking it, and instead just drink it down?
No, Jack wouldn't do that. Alcohol or not, he wouldn't just drink wine down without knowing what it does.

..Well, except that one time when he first found out what it does.
How important is Jack to your team, anyway? He's the 'captain', sure, but could you live without him if he ever was taken out?

>No, no, don't even think about that.
>No matter what happens, you're sure Jack would be fine.

Jack.
He keeps the group together, you could handle him disappearing.

But it would be a really heavy hit.

No, no, don't even think about that.
No matter what happens, you're sure Jack will be fine.

If anything, Jack is probably more worried about you.
He has a right to be. You've almost been kidnapped once, and he's still fairly clear on that front.

You hope he's not out at this hour trying to find you. Him, Tuile, and Anna all have a habit of being overprotective of you.

Definitely Anna, though. Anna is probably worried sick right now.

That may be part of the reason you're deciding to travel under a new moon. Thinking of what Anna may do if you do not return tonight is probably one of the biggest worries you've had this trip.

Oh! In the distance, you can see light.
The light of Biscotti's watchtowers.

You're almost back.

--

You approach the outside of the castle, and the night-shift guards nod to you as you walk past.

Okay, things aren't in disarray here. So that must mean things worked out great, right?!

"H-Hi princess!" You wave to the short rabbit-girl with her arms crossed.

She continues to stare. It's almost unnerving.

W-well! Surely she can't be too mad! After all, you solved the case!
"I-I'm doing well tonight, Princess. Look! Not hurt! Or anything!"

Silent.
Um.

"W-well, anyway, Bennet! How are you doing? Long shift?"

"Ugh." Bennet looks slightly less-dead. "It's been a long day, and I've been on shift for almost fourteen hours. I'm ready for bed."
"Oh wow! That's a long time! How much longer do you have?"

"This is hopefully it, if Annette is satisfied."

You look over toward her, and she hasn't moved an inch.
Oh, oh this is bad.

"..Really?"
"Really."

"Why not?"
"Because, Yuuki. I was thinking about it, and: I understand." Anna starts undoing her hairbands. "I know how much Kayda matters to you, and I would do exactly the same thing if it were you in her stead."

"So.. you don't think I did the wrong thing?"

Anna hops up, and walks over to the bed.
"Yuuki, If you were using your best judgement, then I don't think you've done the wrong thing."
"Really?"
"Of course." Anna grabs onto your waist, "I trust my hero well enough to assume she made the best decision at the time. I don't know the full story, but I'm sure you had your reasons. I saw the note and the bottle downstairs when it was handed off to Aligot, so I'm sure that was important."

"..Then.. you want to hear me explain?"
"Only if you pet my head."

You go into detail about the investigation, the late-night incursions into the fops and their stupid revolution plan, and the wild chase across Biscotti for people whom you're not even sure were real. Then, you cover the important part about tonight: the bottle.

"Mm, that sounds dangerous." Anna sighs, your fingers run along the apex of her ears, "-but I'm glad you decided not to chase any further."
"I didn't know where to chase to at that point." Your hand grasp at a lock of loose hair, turning it right. "All I found was the letter, and the bottle. I knew drinking the bottle would probably make things worse."

"Like I said-" Anna places her hand on yours, "I always trust you to make the right decision."

"I'm not sure it was." You pout, "I still don't know anything more than when I left. Where do I even go next?"
"How about, Bruschetta."
"We can't go home yet." You knead her scalp, "We haven't found Clair, and the tournament is a week or two away at this rate."

"Let's talk about it more in the morning." Anna grabs you into a hug, "In the meantime. You're still grounded for two months."

>Two MONTHS?!
>I thought that was a joke!
>Wait, what do you mean 'go to bruschetta?' Do you know something I don't?
>Before we go to bed, I want to go check on Kayda first.

This seems like an important question.

Writing last post of the night!
Sorry, but I am whipped. I wanted to get one or two more posts, but I'm not sure I can manage.

Hey Announcer?
Given this thread's gonna go away soon... have you considered just saving the posts and remaking them next time you run a thread?
>>
>>801668
I could do that. It might be better on weeks when I have very slow days or writers block.
I get writers block more often than I'd like to admit, and that's part of why posts sometimes take so long. I have problems phrasing things the way I want when I'm tired.

I could do that, but what would be the opinion of 're-runs' for thread content? I'm not sure.

Next post almost done.

Well so that threads that has relatively few posts, like this one, doesn't have to be saved on suptg, mostly.

"What?"
"You heard me."

The words hang in your mind. They almost feel like a dream echoing on the waves.
"Two MONTHS?!"

"Mm." Anna rubs her head against your side.

"I thought that was a joke!"

"Mm nmmh." She shakes her head.

Two whole months?! Of what? Just staring at the ceiling in her room!? That can't be right!

"W-what exactly can't I do?"

"Mmph." She pulls away from your ribcage, "Well for one, leave the castle grounds without an escort."
"At all?!"
"Nope."

"T-" You're almost speechless! "Then who counts as an escort?! Why would anyone-"
"It's not for your safety, it's just so you have a messenger in case you're going to be out late." She pouts, "No more me staying up until midnight, hoping to hear a word back from you."

"S-surely there must be a better way!"
"If there is, I don't know."

You feel your heart beating, and Anna leans up against you.
"What else can't I do, then?"
"That's it."

You look over toward her, "Really? that's it?"

"That's it."

"That seems too easy. Surely there's something else you want to add?"

Anna shift her weight onto you, "One more thing, I guess."
She leans over and kisses you lightly, on the cheek. "No more dangerous stuff until after the tournament, okay?"

"Yeah, yeah." You sigh. "Speaking of which, what did you mean earlier by 'Go to Bruschetta'? do you know something I don't?"

"Mm, a little." She starts undoing the back of her dress. "I spoke with someone and we may have found a good place to look for Clair, but-"

She immediately wraps her arms around you!
"-But I'm not telling you, lest you decide to run off into the night again. We'll talk more about it in the morning."

You both get changed, and make the bed up for the night. You were far more tired than you realized.
Even the gentle sound of "Good night Yuuki" seems to deflect off the buzzing in your head. You turn over in bed and let sleep overtake you.

..Or you would, if you weren't thinking about returning to Bruschetta.
That is going to keep you up all night.
