Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls. But a dark cloud approaches, and times are about to change. A new chapter in the tale of Dark Gate Academy is about to begin.

“Takeshi-Sensei? What are you doing?”

Returning to the school from your mission in your home city was nothing if not a jarring experience. Sure, you figured there would be quite a few changes with the new authority in charge, but damn did this government group work fast. As soon as you arrived, you bump into suited agents wandering the halls, new teachers... the new gym teacher looking particularly fine, and in one of the most interesting sights of all, Takeshi fumbling through a storage closet, struggling to grab hold of a mop without making a mess. Risa standing by your side is the first to ask the all-important question.

“Oh... hey children,” Takeshi nervously chuckles. “Looks like there's been a few changes around here...”

“You're telling me,” you sigh. “Why are you trying to clean the halls?”

“Well, uhh...” Takeshi mumbles. “As it turns out, Agent White thought I wasn't very g-good at my job following my performance review, and... well... I was fired.”

You're left with a strange sinking in your stomach. Sure, Takeshi was terrible at his job, but... you liked him as your homeroom teacher. You'll hate it if whoever replaces him is some strict ass. “That sucks...”

“So, why are you still here?” Risa asks. “Trying to get closer to the nurse now that a relationship is no longer against the rules?”

“B-but we're still not allowed,” Takeshi mumbles as he struggles with the mops. “You see, I was fired from my role as a teacher, but they considered me too useful in combat to get rid of entirely, so they put me back to work... as a janitor...”

“Tough break,” Risa sighs. “If you ever need help or anything, just ask us. We owe you for being such a good supervisor for our club.”

“Heh, I actually still am your supervisor!” Takeshi cheerfully laughs as he scratches the back of his head. “I begged to keep my position there, and they didn't care enough about the lunchtime club to keep me from that position!”

“Well, that's good news,” you nod. “I'd hate for some new supervisor to come along and try to restrict us.”

Takeshi nods as he fumbles and drops several mops to the floor. “Heh, still getting the hang of this!” he chuckles with a bead of sweat dripping from his forehead.

You and Risa walk out into the courtyard to grab some fresh air.

“So, now that Akuro's reporting everything we told her to the higher ups... you want to talk about those demon slayers?” Risa asks.

“What about them?” you ask.

“For one, how cool it was of you to be there for Alice, to convince her not to got through with that ritual,” Risa replies. “Stuff like that always seems shady to me.”

“It was really Alice's decision,” you shrug. “I barely helped. She made her mind up on her own.”

“Still... it was good of you,” Risa smiles. “You're not as bad a guy as you think you are, Kaz. Next order of business... what do we do if we meet them again?”

You shrug. “No idea. We're both after this Yami guy, and you know what they say about the enemy of your enemy...”

Risa shakes her head. “Trust me, that saying isn't always true.”

“Talking from experience?”

“Might be,” Risa smirks. “But that's not for you to know.”

“Yo guys!” Chuichi calls out as he rolls up to you on a skateboard, a sheet of paper in his hands. “Welcome back! Missed you all big time!”

“Thanks,” you smile as he hands you the sheet of paper. “What's this?”

“It's my sign-up sheet,” he smiles. “For the club. Me joining has been pretty overdue, hasn't it?”

“A little... wait, we have sign-up sheets?” you raise an eyebrow. “Since when?”

Chuichi simply shrugs and pats you on the shoulder. “Who cares? I can join, right?”

“Yeah, of course.”

“Thanks pal,” Chuichi smiles. “So... what's on your agenda for today?”

“No missions,” Risa explains. “Though we do have a routine Darkworld incursion tonight. Should be fun. Until then though, day's ours to spend however we like.”

>Let's check in on the current club members, make sure everyone's doing okay.

"Is that something you usually have to do?" Chuichi asks, raising an eyebrow.

Risa scoffs. "Trust me, Chuichi. This group's sanity is held on by a thin piece of string at the best of times. You'll be a welcome change from the typical angry teenagers... and I'm counting myself in that group."

"You're not that bad," you reply.

"Only in comparison," Risa laughs.

The three of you make your way towards the Class 1 dormitory, hoping to check in on some of the others and making sure that they're doing okay after the mission. Thinking off the top of your head, Alice could use and extra pair of eyes on her after her incident with the demon slayers, Gado's still angry with Anri for snooping and Anri's pretty upset with that, and Akuro has more than her fair share of troubles meshing with the rest of the group. Damn... you wish you all got along as well as Class 2 did, those people are like a well-oiled machine. When you got back, you heard word that two of them even got freakin' married yesterday. Insane.

As you arrive at the dormitory, you notice an oddly large crowd packed out the front of your fellow Class 1 students, and a few from the upper classes as well. At the head of this raucous crowd is exactly who you'd have expected to gather them... Io. What is it this time? Some kind of sale? Buy one, get one free? You're constantly amazed by her marketing skill.

"That's right!" Io declares. "All my wares, completely free! I'm just giving them away! Take a number, and you'll be part of our lottery draw!"

Giveaway? Completely free? You don't know what's possessed Io, but it's freaking you out.

"What's this about?" you ask, sliding through the crowd.

Io wags her finger in front of your face. "Now now, Kaz! You can't just skip ahead! It's not first come, first serve!"

"Why are you giving everything away?" you raise an eyebrow.

"Oh, I decided on this a while ago!" Io smiles. "The wares were cluttering up the room and Alice needs her space. Besides, I figured everyone deserved a free giveaway!"

"But why are you doing this now?" you ask.

"I know why," Risa folds her arms. "She knows the government are going to confiscate her goods. She's screwed either way, but at least if she does this she can make herself look like a hero."

Io pouts. "Risa, you make it sound so dishonourable!"

"That's because it is," Risa remarks. "No matter how a snake sheds it's skin, it remains a snake."

Io pauses, frowning. "I... I'm trying to do something good... Kazuma, I'm doing something good, right?"

>Yeah, you are. Risa, lay off her a little.

>Yeah, you are. Risa, lay off her a little.

"You think so?" Io smiles as she brushes a strand of hair behind her ear. "Thanks... I don't care about looking like a hero or anything. I just felt it was time I did good by my friends, is all..."

Risa crosses her arms. "Forgive me for not believing you, snake. But if Kaz wants me to lay off, then I'll be polite... I always forget how adamant you are to defend her."

"Io's my friend," you sigh. "You both are. Can't you learn to trust her just a little more?"

"I wasn't raised to trust people who haven't earned it," Risa glares at Io.

Io chuckles. "Huh, neither was I! Looks like we have something in common!"

"What is this?" a voice calls out from the crowd.

You turn around to be met with the sight of two men in suits. Agents... and they look unhappy.

"Hello, fine sirs!" Io welcomes them. "You're not too late to take part in this amazing giveaway! I call it the New Leaf Raffle! Take a ticket and wait in line!"

"Blue, what does this look like to you?" The agent in the ponytail asks.

"Like a raffle," the spiky haired one explains. "The girl just explained it, Green."

"Very funny," Agent Green scowls. "To me, it looks like an illegal selling of goods on school property."

"Illegal? Selling?" Io gasps. "I earned this goods legally, and I'm not selling them, I'm giving them away!"

"Save the excuses," Green mutters. "Blue, we should confiscate these items."

Blue scratches the back of his head. "Really? You sure you're not just being a tight-ass?"

"Just shut up and do it," Green mutters.

"What?!" Io cries. "You can't! I'm giving these away to the people! This is my redemption!"

"One more word out of you, and you'll be tossed into solitary!" Green snaps.

"But-"

"Just... do what he says," Blue shrugs. "There's no arguing with this guy."

Blue and Green clear the table of an upset Io, confiscating the goods as the crowd dissipates into angry mutterings, pissed off that the promise of free goods wasn't delivered on.

Io collapses into a seated position, her face frozen in horrified shock as the agents walk off with all of her wares. You, Risa and Chuichi are left alone with her in awkward silence, until Risa is the first to speak up.

"Well, I guess when you try to scam people, this is what-"

"WAAAAAAAAAAAUGH!"

You're taken aback by the loud wailing of Io as she simply bursts into angry tears. You wipes her eyes, but the tears flow freely as she begins to cry and blubber like a child. "T-THEY TOOK EVERYTHING!" she wails. "I... I JUST WANTED TO BE A GOOD PERSON! I... I JUST WANTED TO..."

Risa bites her bottom lip before letting out a sigh. "Hey... stop crying. It's not so bad..."

"WHY CAN'T I BE GOOD?!" Io sniffles, her face not a pretty sight with the volume of the hot wet tears. "I... I JUST WANT TO BE GOOD... I DON'T WANT TO BE A SNAKE..."

"Jeez..." Risa sighs. "Look Kaz, I'm not good at this. You're her friend, you should say something."

>You should say something, Risa

"What?" Risa asks. "Like what?"

"I don't know," you reply. "How about a simple apology?"

Risa sighs as she sits by the sniffling Io. "Hey... sorry about calling you a snake all the time. It... it's just exaggerating. I don't really think you're a snake..."

"You don't mean that," Io mutters, pressing her knees to her face. "I can always tell a liar. You really do hate me."

Risa shakes her head, instantly giving up on her attempt to spare her feelings. "You're right. I do."

"Well..." Io mutters, before wiping her eyes and rising to her feet. "You know what, Risa? To hell with you! Who are you to judge me? Who are you to judge anyone?"

"Excuse me?" Risa snaps angrily.

"You heard me!" Io fires back. "I know I haven't been the perfect person in the past, but I've tried so hard to make up for it! To do right! To be a more honest and loving person! And you can have that... why is that? Is it because I remind you of how much you continue to lie to everyone every day?"

"S-shut up..." Risa mutters, a crack appearing in her usual calm demeanour.

"You lie about yourself every day, you keep your secrets, but I'm the snake?" Io snaps. "I don't care what you think of me, and I won't let you wear me down! I'm trying to be a good person, while you're still trying to keep secrets from your friends! You're the liar! You're the snake!"

Risa stares angrily, clenching her fist, as Io takes a deep breath and calms down. "Sorry for going off the handle like that... I'm not usually this angry, it's just been a bad day... I just-"

"Piss off," Risa glares. "Get out of my face before I break your nose."

Io solemnly shakes her head as she walks back into the dorm, her eyes still red with tears.

"Damn... you weren't kidding," Chuichi remarks. "Are things always this tense?"

"Most of the time," you reply. "You could have gone a little easier, Risa."

"Shut up, Kaz!" Risa snaps. "I'm sick of you defending her... no... I'm not. I'm just angry, because... she's right. She had every right to say what she did, and that drives me crazy. Uhh... I'll see you later."

Risa wanders off as you awkwardly scratch the back of your head.

"Well, that was something..." Chuichi shrugs. "So... you want to check up on some of the others?"

He's right, you should check in on the others. It might be better to give Io and Risa some space to calm down after that argument, but there's plenty of club members to speak to.

"Let's check in on Kuin," you reply.

Chuichi raises an eyebrow. "Why? Is that little squirt upset by something?"

"Nah," you shake your head. "Kuin's just more of a happy presence. Could use one after seeing that. I feel so bad..."

"Don't," Chuichi shrugs. "It was just an argument. Friends argue."

"I don't think those two are friends," you sigh.

Chuichi chuckles. "Well, they're closer now than before they vented! Trust me, those two will be hugging it out later!"

"I hope you're right..." you sigh.

The two of you step inside the dorm, and it doesn't take long to find Kuin, as she comes rushing down the hallway on Gado's back.

"Make way for your benevolent dictator!" Kuin exclaims as she speeds by. "Oh, it's Kazuma. Gado, I order you to halt!"

Gado turns to face you as Kuin hops off his back.

"Enjoying the piggy-back?" you ask.

Kuin nods and wags a finger. "I'll have you know it's a very convenient way to get around! Your ruler has very short legs, and Gado's are huge! It would be inconvenient of me not to take advantage of them!"

"Well, you're just the person we were looking for," you smile.

"Really?" Kuin stares at you. "I thought you might have been busy..."

Busy? What is she... now that you think about it, you haven't spent much time with Kuin lately. You've been busy trying to help those out with problems, including her own bodyguard. She must be missing her friend.

"Well, I've got some time to spend with you now," you smile.

Kuin stares at you then pumps her fist. "Excellent! I knew you would think of me first! A loyal subject is a loyal subject no matter what!"

"What were you planning on doing?" Gado asks. "And what's the skateboard kid doing here?"

"I joined the club," Chuichi explains.

"Nice," Gado mutters in a low tone. "Nice to have another guy around. Not that I have a problem being surrounded by the women, but I start to stand out."

You raise an eyebrow. "I'm another guy, you know."

"Yeah, but you're a pretty-boy. You're practically one of the girls. I think that's why the all trust you so much."

"Hey!" you protest. "You're not even an official member of the club."

Gado simply answers that with a shrug.

"So what do you want to do?" Kuin asks. "Do you want to play videogames? Oh, there's also a new horror movie in town that I wanted to see? Since I'm a generous ruler, I'll allow you to make the final decision on this one."

>Let's play videogames.

"Yeah!" Kuin exclaims. "Gado! Do you want to play too?"

Gado shakes his head. "I'm fine watching. Give the third controller to Chuichi or something."

"Gado never wants to play," Kuin pouts. "I wish he was cooler."

"I think everyone wishes their dad was cooler," Chuichi laughs.

Kuin pauses. "Huh? Gado's not my dad..."

"And my dad is cool," you reply.

"Right..." Chuichi sweats. "Wrong room for that joke, I guess... Gado, care for a pity laugh?"

"Not really," Gado replies.

As Chuichi hangs his head in defeat, you all enter the common room and sit down on the couch in front of the tv. Kuin hunkers down and begins to untangle the chords around the game device. "Huh, I thought you would have ordered Gado to do that."

"He's my most loyal knight, but I don't need him to do everything!" Kuin laughs. "Besides, I'm closer to the ground! It's easier for me!"

As Kuin untangle the chords, she hands you a controller before sitting next to you, shuffling close to you on the couch with a smile. "Are you ready? You can't defeat me in this! I'm an expert!"

Kuin boots up the game, which is some sort of party-fighting game with 2-4 players. You don't know much about it, so you just pick the first character you see with a sword. Play to your strengths and all that. Kuin picks some sort of superhero character, while Chuichi picks a lady vampire. What an odd roster of characters.

Gado hangs around in the kitchen while you play, making a sandwich for Kuin, as Anri hesitantly shuffles into the room. She's carrying a thick file in her hand, and approaches Gado with it. She slams it onto the kitchen counter before addressing him. "Hello, Gado."

"What's this?" Gado asks.

"It's..." Anri begins, choking on her words a little. "It's every piece of information I have on you. As you can see, I've gathered much. There's still holes in my records, and quite a large amount is interspersed with my own personal thoughts..."

"I'll say," Gado smirks, flicking through the pages. "Incredibly attractive? Sculpted abs, and his hair smells like blueberries? I'm sure that information's important for your case."

Anri hangs her head low, trying to cover her blush. "A-anyway... I want you to look through it. Review everything I know about you, and then... keep it. Burn it, tear it up... I don't care. I breached your trust with this information and I don't intend to hold onto it any longer."

"What's this?" Gado mutters, reading a section within. "Takes care of her like she was his own daughter... a truly kind and gentle... wow, that's a sappy way to describe me."

There's a long pause between Gado and Kuin, before Gado snaps the file shut and hands it back to her. "I don't need this."

"But-"

"Besides, I'm sure you have it all memorised anyway, along with whatever dirt you have dug up on anyone else."

"I... I'm sorr-"

"Don't apologise," Gado shakes his head as he places out his hand, ruffling Anri's head enough to turn her face red. "You're a good kid, and you aren't spreading this crap around. Keep up your dumb investigation if you want. I won't take that from you."

"T-thank you..." Anri smiles. "You're... my friend-"

"No, I ain't," Gado interrupts bluntly. "But... I could be."

"I'd like that."

"Yeah... also, you seem to have kept in some fictional stories you've written about me..." Gado replies. "I don't think I need to read anymore of a romance novel with me and Kazuma."

"O-oh god," Anri gasps as she clutches the file close to her chest. "I-I'm so sorry! G-goodbye!"

Anri rushes out of the room blushing, as Gado simply smirks.

"That was nice..." Chuichi smiles.

"Don't lose your focus!" Kuin snaps. "We're playing a game, remember?"

>Rolled 100

You may never have played the game before, but for some reason it just feels completely natural with your hands on the controller. Everything just comes easy to you, and you find yourself picking up on the controls and figuring out strategies within seconds. You manage to defeat both Kuin and Chuichi's characters without taking a single hit of damage.

"W-what?!" A shocked Kuin exclaims. "Rematch!"

You begin a rematch against Kuin, and defeat her again.

"Another rematch!"

You beat her again.

"Rematch!"

You beat her once more.

After the seventh rematch victory, Kuin is left sitting in the couch, completely dumbfounded. "I... how did you..."

"Sorry," you sigh. "I didn't want to go easy on you..."

"You... you..." Kuin mumbles. "You were amazing! How did you do that?! Oh, now I need to grant you some kind of reward!"

You pause. "Like what?"

"Let me see..." Kuin mutters, reaching into her pocket. "Oh, here we are!"

Kuin hands you a small badge with a yellow smiley face on it. "What's this?" you ask.

"It's... a gift!" Kuin smiles. "For friends! I demand that you wear it every day to show your loyalty to your ruler!"

"Sure, I will," you smile.

Gado clears his throat. "Okay Kuin, I think it's time you studied."

"Aww, Gado!" Kuin complains.

"Sorry, I gotta make sure you do this," Gado explains. "You want to score highest in the tests again, right?"

"Of course!" Kuin laughs. "How else could I be the ruler?"

Gado nods as he picks up Kuin and carries her to her room.

"Well, that was fun," Chuichi smiles. "Even if I did get my ass kicked. You want to visit anyone else?"

>Tami

You decide to check in on Tami. Haven't spoken to her in a while, either. You make your way to her dormroom and knock on it... but to no answer.

"Huh... she must be outside," Chuichi mutters. "Probably practising her hunting."

You step outside, where you catch a glimpse of Tami standing in the courtyard outside the dormroom, her bow strung tight in her hands. She's aiming at a tree directly ahead of her, and is firing away at it, each arrow hitting the exact same spot. Working on her marksmanship, of course. Tami's constantly training like this. It's strange seeing her in this state... she's usually very calm and cheerful, but when she's in action, the shift is remarkable. The focus behind her eyes, the determination on her face... it's actually pretty scary.

"Hey Tami!" you call out.

Tami turns her head to face you, breaking out of her focus trance. She smiles and waves cheerily. "Hey Kazuma! Hey Chuichi! What's up?"

"Oh, just the usual!" Tami laughs. "Trying to keep up with the skill of the rest of the club!"

You chuckle slightly. "Keep up? I think you're the most skilled out of all of us."

"Yeah, and I'd like to keep it that way!" Tami laughs. "No slacking! Gotta be ready to put an arrow in the back of Yami's head when the time comes."

"Pretty brutal way to put it," Chuichi chuckles.

"Yeah, but who cares?" Tami laughs. "It's okay if I'm killing bad guys!"

>Killing is never okay, Tami.
>Yes, but don't get too excited.
>That's true. I have dibs on killing Yami, though.

>Yes, but don't get too excited.

Tami lets out a low chuckle. "Whatever you say, Kaz... but it's hard not to get excited at the idea of hunting the deadliest game of all... an Archdemon!"

"It's not a hunt," you mutter. "He's not a wild animal. This is much more serious than that."

"I'm taking it seriously!" Tami pouts. "I'm the one training here! What did you spend the last hour doing?"

You pause. "... Playing videogames."

"Exactly!" Tami laughs. "Maybe you should focus on being serious yourself, because hunting this guy is a big deal to me. This is the real chance to prove myself... I'm not slacking off."

"She's kinda got you there," Chuichi shrugs.

"Yeah..." you sigh. "Sorry, Tami. I won't interrupt your training any more."

Tami smirks. "Conceding so easy? That's pretty soft of you, Kaz."

You shrug. "What can I say? I don't feel like arguing this too much."

"Because you'll lose, right?"

"... Maybe."

You and Chuichi walk off towards the main building of the school, as you are soon approached by Kiriko. "Hey Kaz, I've got something you're gonna want to see!"

"And what's that?" you ask.

"Get this," Kiriko smiles. "I'm about to pull the trigger on my best prank yet!"

Oh no...

"Kiriko, are you talking about-"

"Yep!" She smiles. "That big ape Roka is going to find out his supposed 'secret admirer' letters were written by me the whole time! Oh, I can't wait to see the look on his face when I tell him what they really say!"

"So, you're confident with this one?" you ask.

"Yeah!" Kiriko smiles. "I mean... I was questioning if I was going too far this time, but I think it'll work out! Just wait there, here he comes!"

As Kiriko speaks, Roka rounds the corner into the hallway, making his way towards his locker. As he opens it, he finds a pink envelope inside. He nods as he quickly grabs it in the hopes that nobody saw.

"Another letter from the girlfriend, I take it?" Kiriko smirks as she leans against the locker next to him.

"What the hell do you want?" Roka mutters. "Piss off, little fly. You can't annoy me."

"Why?" Kiriko laughs. "Because you're so giddy after getting a love letter?"

"How the hell do you know about that?!" Roka yells.

Kiriko chuckles. "Oh gee, I wonder how I could know that. Could it be that I... wrote them?"

Roka stares at Kiriko in confusion. "You... wrote these love letters?"

"They aren't love letters, you dumb ape!" Kiriko yells. "If you could read, you'd know that they're just various insults. That one compares your odour to that of a muddy hippo."

Roka stares at Kiriko, who confidently crosses her arms. "Got you good this time, didn't I?" she laughs.

Roka continues to stare at Kiriko, briefly looking down at the letter, before his face breaks out in a frown.

"Hey..." Kiriko mutters, her own smile fading. "Aren't you going to get mad? Yell at me? Punch a wall or something?"

Roka solemnly shakes his head and walks off without a word. As you approach Kiriko, you see her bite her bottom lip guiltily. "Uhh... that wasn't the reaction I expected..."

Okay, you know what?

I think we honestly need to call a class meeting or something. This is too much interpersonal drama in a time of really fucked-up crises. We need to all get this stuff out there, and either try to heal it, or just at the very least know where everyone stands with everyone else so we can all DEAL WITH IT. It's starting to get a bit much, and I'm worried it'll bleed over into us doing what we need to do- that being kill demons and NOT DIE. Can't do that if half the class hates the other half.

We don't have to like each other, but we do at least have to fucking tolerate each other, or else things will just get worse than they already are, and I'm willing to bet several of these people might die because of it. If nothing else, knowing who hates who means we can know how and when we need to be professional. We don't want interpersonal conflicts causing someone to hesitate even a second in battle. Treat it as a job if you have to.
>>
>>770736
How would we go about setting something like that up though? It'd have to be an order from the higher ups or something to get us all in one place.

>You should go apologise to him.

"Oh no..." Kiriko mutters. "I... I thought it would just annoy him, get him worked up! I didn't mean to hurt his feelings! I didn't even realise the dumb ape had feelings!"

"Then you should apologise," you reply.

Kiriko nods. "You're right... this sucks. I thought it would be funny, that even he could get a laugh out of being tricked..."

Kiriko rushes down the hallway to track down Roka, who has made movements to lock himself inside one of the nearby classrooms. Kiriko knocks on the door. "Hey ape, get out here! I'm really sorry!"

There's no answer from the other end.

"I... I'm gonna go in there," Kiriko threatens. "I know this room, I can teleport inside!"

No answer.

"Don't be like that!" Kiriko sighs. "I... I get it, I went too far with this one. So get mad at me! Punch me! Punch Kaz! Punch something! Just... don't be so sad! It's weird!"

Again, no answer.

"You shouldn't be sad..." Kiriko mutters, biting her lip and pressing her head against the door. "Nobody deserves to be sad... please, come out..."

There is the sound of clicking, as the screen door opens up, Gado inside. Behind him are the tattered remains of every letter he was sent.

"I..." Kiriko begins, but Gado just shakes his head and walks off. "I... I'm going to prank you again! You can't stop it, you big dumb ape! And then you'll have to get mad! And then... you'll have to talk to me!"

As Roka rounds the corner, Kiriko runs her hand through her hair. "I feel like such an awful person."

"You're not a bad person..." you reply. "He... he'll come around. I'd hang off on pranking him for a while, though."

"Hey, aren't you kids in class 1?" a voice calls out.

You turn around to see Agent Blue standing, his gun holstered around his waist.

"Yeah."

"Then what are you waiting for?" he says. "You've got one of those incursion things tonight, and I've gotta escort the teachers back to their homes."

"Right..." you reply.

You make your way into your homeroom class where many of your classmates are waiting. Mayu stands at the back of the room and nods as the three of you approach her.

"Hey hey Mayu!" Chuichi smiles. "How is it-"

"No," Mayu shuts him down. "We're preparing for an incursion tonight. It seems it's been a while since our last one."

"We've been so busy with these other missions," you reply. "It'll be interesting to be back in the Darkworld regular again. Like a homecoming of sorts."

"Kazuma," Mayu begins. "I've been wondering about something... do you feel it's a good idea to wear the stone around your neck?"

"What do you mean?"

"Many seem to be after that gem of yours," Mayu explains. "Perhaps it's better if you were to hide it in a lockbox before travelling to the Darkworld."

>Good idea, I'll do just that.

Mayu nods. "I am glad that you like my idea Kazuma, it should keep your stone safe."

"But if he puts in in a lockbox, how can he appreciate the lovely chain you made for him?" Kiriko smiles.

"Well... that's hardly an important issue..." Mayu mutters, looking over at you with a small smile. You're surprised by how much your friendship with Mayu has developed, and so is Chuichi, who you suppose can't help but feel a little suspicious.

"So, what's with all the gifts?" he chuckles. "What, do you two cuddle everytime you're out on a mission too?"

"Nah, but the did share a bed together at one point," Kiriko explains. "It was pretty cute."

"It wasn't like that," you sigh. "We had to share a bed. We never made contact the whole night."

"Calm down dude," Chuichi laughs. "I wasn't accusing. Just poking fun."

As you nervously laugh in turn, Io enters the room with a cheerful Alice close behind. She spots an annoyed looking Risa in the corner and approaches her.

"What do you want now, snake?" Risa mutters. "I'm not in the mood for any more of this."

"I made you something," Io replies hesitantly, as she displays what appears to be a leather gun holster. "The finest material I've got... well, after everything was confiscated."

Risa stares at the holster suspiciously. "And what is this for?"

"It's... a gift," Io shrugs. "A way of saying I'm sorry. I shouldn't have flown of the handle like that... I was just upset because the agents took everything and... I think you're a good person, Risa."

"Right..." Risa mutters. "I can't accept this."

"Why the heck not?"

"Because I don't think you're a good person," Risa replies. "You might be sorry, and that's nice... but I'm not."

Io nods and smiles. "I know... but this isn't just an apology gift. It's a thank you gift... you helped me realise something, Risa."

"And what's that?"

"It doesn't matter what you think of me," Io explains. "It doesn't matter what other people think of me. I know I have a long road to climb to gain people's respect and their trust... but I'm not doing what I do for them. I'm doing it for myself. You can still think I'm a snake, but as long as I know that I'm doing the right thing, that's all that matters. So I'll prove I'm a good person and a useful member of the team in time, simply by being me."

"You know..." Risa mutters. "That's not a bad way to live your life."

Io nudges the holster more towards Risa with a cheesy smile on her face, until Risa eventually accepts it. "Thanks, Io."

"No, thank you," Io smiles.

There's a brief pause before Io takes a step forward with outstretched arms, before Risa hold her back. "Uhh... what are you doing?"

"This is a hug moment, right?" Io asks. "This felt like a hug moment."

"It's not," Risa replies. "We're still not friends... but we're on the same team. The least I can do is try to tolerate you."

"I'm okay with that," Io laughs. "Also... I don't care about your history, by the way. You should be able to keep any secrets you want."

Risa raises an eyebrow. "Trying to justify it for yourself?"

Io pauses. "... Yeah."

Risa smiles and nods. "Good to be on the same page."

"Okay everyone!" Makoto announces. "We're ready to enter the Darkworld! We'll be splitting into groups. Kazuma! You and your club will be a group of their own... mostly."

"What do you mean, mostly?" you ask.

"Well, your club's a little big," Makoto explains. "Gee... I'm really sorry to make you do this, but can you split the club into two groups as well? We need to explore as much of the Darkworld as we can tonight."

With your group chosen, you travel into the Darkworld prepared to make some exploration. As you arrive to your new surroundings, you can see that this region seems to be a mishmash of different environments. To the north is a blazing hot desert. The the South, a snowy tundra. To the east, a windy mountain range, and to the west it's what appears to be a normal field. Such starkly different conditions, and you find yourself transported right into the edge where they all meet.

"What is this?" Chuichi asks. "Did we wind up in the spot where four regions converge? Or is this the region itself?"

Makoto shakes his head. "I'm... not sure. Well, there's only one way about this! Each group head off in a different direction!"

"Sounds like a plan," you mutter. "That way, we can cover all of the ground, and hopefully find a guardian."

"Oh, what if this region has four different guardians?" Io pitches. "Explains the different areas."

"If that's the case, then it would certainly make a good bit of sense," Makoto mutters.

"Indeed!" Amaya claps her hands together. "We all split up, and hunt down the various guardians in the area!"

"Calm down blondie," Gado replies. "It was just a suggestion. For all we know, all but one of these directions is a trap."

Amaya gasps. "Oh no! Who would do such a thing?"

"Demons, you blonde airhead," Gado mutters.

Amaya puffs out her cheeks. "Oh, you are just about the rudest man I've ever met!"

"Yeah, I'm sure you're used to people bending over backwards for the pretty girl," Gado replies.

"That's not it at all!" Amaya protests. "When you're kind to others, they'll be kind in turn!"

"And when you're judgemental, other's are judgemental in return," Gado retorts. "Funny how that works out."

"Whatever, let's just get to business!" Kiriko yells. "Still... I can't help but be worried..."

"What about?" you ask.

"The dumb ape..." Kiriko explains. "He wasn't with the rest of the class... he's out here on his own, and he could be in trouble... because of me."

"We'll keep an eye out for him," you reply. "But Roka can handle himself easily."

You prepare to set off, gathering your group and splitting off from the class in your designated direction.

Hm.

North- the heat will cause issue with our melee the most, and everyone else passively. Ranged should be mostly okay, though- no cover.

South- The tundra will likely have an issue with cold affecting everyone, but if we can see better than the enemy, we might could use weight of fire to good effect.

East- plenty of hidey holes and ambush spots, which could help or hurt melee. The wind will ruin Tami's aim, and possibly destabalize everyone else's.

West- Even steven. But I'm anticipating something screwy.

"Aw come on!" Sae yells. "How the hell did we get stuck in the freakin' desert?"

"Because I decided it," you reply.

"Oh... it's so hot..." Io moans, puling down the straps of her suspenders to stay cool.

"Gado, why don't we have ice creeeeeeeam?" Kuin whines.

Gado yawns. "To be honest, I don't mind the heat."

"So Io," you mutter, trying to break the conversation away from the overwhelming heat... the heat that just make you want to collapse... oh god... so hot... "What's, uhh... your weapon?"

"My weapon?" Io mutters, fanning her hand in front of her face. "I'm not much of a fighter, but I don't have to be when I have an arm turret."

"A what?"

Io reaches into her bag and hands you a canister of water, which you pour into your mouth as she explains. "A small machine-gun turret on my arm. I bought it from Akemi, you know, the cheerful girl in Class 2? She wanted to give it away for free, but I insisted I'd pay. Other than that, I do have some medical ability..."

"I recall," you reply. "What about you, Chuichi?"

"My thing?" he tilts his head. "Well, that's a little harder to explain. Trust me, though... it's really cool."

As you wander through the desert, you feel a strange shifting in the sands, as from beneath pops out a rather large scorpion. It flares it's stinger, ready to strike.

"Well... want to show us what you do?" you ask.

Chuichi nods. "Okay, check this out."

Chuichi holds out his gloved hands, outstretching his fingers. You're incredibly confused, until a series of thin strings shoot out, and he begins to lash out the strings upon the scorpion, each of them striking like whips, tearing away at the creature. The strings retract as Chuichi gives a confident smirk.

"Cool," you mutter.

"I know, right?" Chuichi smirks. "A little piece of magic I happened to pick up on pretty well."

As you and Chuichi talk, the sands shift once more, as a series of scorpions, six altogether, rise up from the ground. Looks like you've got a fight on your hands now.

"The scorpions are trying to form a pincer attack!" Kuin yells.

"Pardon the pun," Chuichi jokes.

"What pun?" Kuin raises an eyebrow. "Just move in the direction your dictator orders you to!"

You rush up to the nearest scorpion and slice at it, leaving a nasty cut along it's side, but the creature remains alive. Chuichi goes for another scorpion passing by you with his battle strings, handily slicing it up like he did to one of them prior, making very short work of it.

Gado spots a scorpion making it's way towards Kuin and draws his sword, cutting it clean in half with a moment of hesitation.

And now it's time for the ranged fighters to make their moves. Tami draws her bow and easily picks off the furthest away of the scorpions within seconds of Kuin pointing it out. Tami's always been amazing when it comes to hunting beasts. As Kuin and Tami share a celebratory high five, Io and Sae get shooting as well. Io finishes off the scorpion you had previously injured, while Sae makes mincemeat out of another one of the further creatures.

The remaining scorpion lets out a shriek, as the ground rises up once again to include another three of the creatures. All four of the creatures move into attack mode, readying their stingers as they attack you, Chuichi, Sae and Gado respectively.

You leap out of the way of the scorpion's stinger as it comes lashing at you, and you see that Gado blocks the thrust of the other's tail with the broad end of his sword. Unfortunately, the other two aren't as lucky. Chuichi gets hit in the shoulder by one of the scorpions stinger, causing him to stagger back. Sae also gets stung right above the knee as she tries to move out of the way.

"Dammit!" Sae cries out in pain. "You stupid lobster!"

"You two okay?"

"Sorta..." Chuichi mutters. "But I do feel kinda funny..."

Chuichi clutches his stomach in pain, as Sae does the same. "Gah!" She screams. "What the hell?!"

"Oh no..." Io sighs. "Looks like they're experiencing some kind of poison. That's going to hurt."

"Can you cure it?" you ask.

"Of course!" Io smiles. "I've got something for that! But I can only heal one at a time, so you've gotta keep those scorpions at bay while I do it!"

"Better hurry," Gado explains. "Poisons drains your energy pretty damn quickly."

"Speaking from experience?" Tami asks.

Gado nods.

"Good to know I'm not the only one used to being poisoned," Tami laughs.

Okay, you gotta take these scorpions out as quickly as possible, or else Chuichi and Sae will collapse to the poison.

As Kuin quickly comes up with a battle strategy, Io makes her way over to Sae, opening her bag to pull out some kind of tonic. "Quick, take this!"

"What?!" Sae yells. "Piss off, I'm busy killing these things!"

Sae unloads with her guns, cutting holes into one of the scorpions, easily killing it.

"Don't be stubborn!" Io pouts, pulling Sae in by the waist. "Just sit still and take your medicine, or you'll die!"

"Fine..." Sae sighs, as she takes the tonic and drinks from it.

"Feeling better?" Io smiles.

Sae glares at her. "Yeah, whatever. Just let me do my job from here!"

You run to stab a scorpion, but it somehow manages to leap over your head as you stab at it. These things are surprisingly agile. Chuichi manages to catch it before it can land though, slicing it in half with his battle string.

"I've got your back, buddy!" He laughs, before clutching his stomach in pain, suffering the effects of the poison a little more.

With two scorpions remaining, Tami readies to take them out quickly, aiming for another bulls-eye on one of the other scorpions. She lets loose with her bow, as the arrow handily pierces the scorpion furthest away.

Gado meanwhile is ready to defend the rest of the group as the final scorpion wanders into the fray. First firing on it, then slicing it as soon as it comes close, Gado makes short work of it.

"Well, that's all of them!" Tami smiles. "Piece of cake, right?"

As if she were tempting fate, the ground swells beneath you as from below the sand comes the massive frame of another creature. It's rising manages to cause you to lose balance and fall back as you catch a glimpse of what just showed up. A Giant turtle-like demon, with what appears to be a massive snake reaching out from its body.

"Damn..." Gado mutters. "Looks like we found our guardian."

You notice that the turtle and snake part of the demon's body appear to be acting separate of each-other, like the each have a mind of their own. The snake seems to be the fastest of the two parts, but the quicker members of your party should be able to attack before it does.

"You know, a Genbu? The Black Tortoise?" Kuin asks. "It's one of the four symbols of China! I should have figured! The Black Tortoise represents North... but it also represents Winter, and we're in a desert... oh, stupid Darkworld, being all screwed up! Gado, tell it to make sense!"

Sae shakes her head. "Damn, I keep forgetting you're a lot smarter than you act, squirt."

"Squirt?" Kuin gasps. "That's benevolent dictator to you!"

You shake your head as you simply ready your sword. Whatever it is, it'll be dead soon. You leap up with your katana and slice at the neck of the snake portion of the demon, leaving a nasty cut as you do. Chuichi hangs back out of the action so that he can't be further harmed until he is cured of his poison.

Tami meanwhile readies her bow and shoots, for the turtle's eyes, hitting it with little issue. Sae follows this up with some firing upon the snake, hoping to take down the more deadlier looking portion of the two in a hurry.

The snake hisses as it readies it's attack, launching itself at you, ready to sink it's massive fangs into your leg.

Io rushes towards Chuichi, her tonic in hand. "Quick, drink up!" She exclaims, as Chuichi handily obliges.

"Ah... that's much better," Chuichi mutters.

"You can feel the effects instantly, right?" Io beams proudly. "An aunt of mine cooked it up, she called it her miracle tonic. Now, when you hear miracle tonic, you usually think of some, pardon the pun, snake oil. But this tonic is-"

"Io, no rambling during battle," you call out.

"Oh... sorry."

"Can you make her stop rambling outside of battle too?" Gado asks.

Gado raises his pistol high, and staying ahead of Kuin so she's not in the line of fire, shoots at the snake. It's body winds and twirls, however, causing the bullets to stray wildly and miss.

"Dammit..." Gado curses, clearly frustrated by the poor performance.

"Hmm, I've been thinking..." Kuin mutters. "The snake is clearly the more deadly one, but it's also the more squishy. So the turtle might not do as much damage, but it can definitely take more."

"So we target the snake first, right?" you reply. "Take it out so the turtle's left on its own?"

"Yep!" Kuin exclaims. "Do that, and this should be a piece of-"

As she talks, the turtle lets out a mighty roar, as the snake appears to be covers in some kind of magic shield, likely to block out any attacks.

"Oh... nuts," Kuin mutters.

"Who taught you to swear like that?" Gado asks angrily.

"Gado, you swear all the time..." Tami points out.

"Yeah, but I'd never say something as stupid as 'nuts'," Gado explains.

Well, it looks like the snake is safe from your attacks for the time being. Just great. Better focus on hurting the defensive force behind the two.

You can't attack the snake because of the shield the turtle has up, but you can damn sure wear down the base of the demon without little issue. You ready your katana and rush towards the turtle, slashing at it's legs, hoping to cut down the base of the big thing. The cuts you leave tell you that no matter how tough this thing looks, you're still doing damage. Even if it isn't crying out in pain and remains stoic, you're wearing it down.

Chuichi chimes in with the attacks as well, using his strings to slash at the head of the turtle. He's not the only one who targets the demon's head, as Tami and Sae continue to attack it from the ranged line. Tami hitting the creature square in the head, but quietly lamenting that it wasn't quite a bullseye, while Sae unloads with machine gun fire on the creature, the bullets damaging its tough skin.

The Snake seems ready to attack, even when defended by it's magic shield. Fantastic. The snake starts to gurgle, before spitting out a green blob of some acidic looking-substance, lobbing it towards the front-line attackers of yourself and Chuichi.

"Yeah, but I have duties!" Io cries. "I have to help out!"

Gado readies his pistol with a sigh. "Still can't hurt that snake, but we can still barrage the turtle part."

"Then what are you waiting for?" Sae yells. "Get to it!"

"Stay behind me Kuin," Gado mutters. "You have to stay safe."

Kuin hides behind Gado as he readies his gun, aiming directly at the turtle's face and taking a shot. The bullet whizzes through the air and lands directly on the turtle's forehead. The turtle's neck recoils back as the bullet connects, damaging it's tough exterior.

Io meanwhile rushes to the front lines, making moves to heal up Chuichi as quickly as she can. "You're doing great work," you tell her encouragingly.

"Thanks, I'm really being a busy bee here!" She chuckles as Chuichi downs the tonic.

The turtle notices the new addition to the front lines in Io, and readies a new attack. It leaps up into the air, and comes crashing down, sending shockwaves through the ground in front of you. The shockwave is so powerful that you feel it sending the you, Io and Chuichi flying back with the sheer force of the wave. You brace yourself, trying hard to stay on your feet.

The shockwave blasts in your face as you try to brace yourself, attempting to take as much of the attack as you can without being damaged. Io braces herself as well, staying close to you in order to strengthen your bases. Chuichi was caught unprepared however, as he was busy drinking the tonic to heal himself, and is unable to brace himself against the blast, flying back through the air and landing behind Gado and Kuin after being launched.

Chuichi groans in pain as Gado helps him to his feet. "Just not your day, is it?" he asks.

"I can take a beating," Chuichi laughs. "Don't worry, we've still got this."

"Subjects, look!" Kuin yells as she points towards the creature. "The shield has dropped on the snake! We can target it again!"

You look up at the creature and it's indeed true... there's no more shield. You ready your Katana, prepared to do some more damage to the guardian.

You ready you sword jumping up to slash at the snake, you cut along the Snake's throat slicing it open as the black demon blood bleeds out, giving off a foul smell. The snake writhes on the turtle's back in pain, as Chuichi whips at it as well, slicing at it with his battle strings. More and more slashes are left on the snake, as Tami pulls an arrow back on her bow, the string as tights as possible, before letting loose and embedding the arrow right between the snake's eyes. Finally, Sae lets loose with her gunfire, riddling the serpent with bullets, until it eventually falls back and collapses, lying lifeless on the shell of the turtle.

"Nice, that's one half down... one more to go," you mutter.

"Here's hoping we can take the second half down soon," Chuichi mutters. "We did a good job of wearing it down, but we need to finish it off before it does something crazy."

"I'm ready to go," Gado replies as he readies his pistol.

"So am I!" Kuin smirks, pointing defiantly towards the turtle.

"Oh, I've just about had it with this thing!" Io stamps her foot as she jumps back to a ranged distance and readies her arm turret. "Let's blast it to high heaven!"

"Io, you're sounding excited," you remark.

"Sorry Kaz, but I am!" She chuckles wildly. "I've never been in a fight this intense before! I'm actually getting a little pumped!"

"Okay..." Gado mutters. "That's a little unnerving, but let's finish this thing off."

Kuin points at the turtle as the two ready their weapons, unloading on the creature with intense fury. Io fires away with the machine gun turret, tearing away at the turtle, while Gado blasts at his with his pistol.

The turtle let's out a tremendous roar before falling back onto its shell, unable to get up with the crushed serpent beneath it. The two continue to fire away at the exposed stomach of the demon, riddling it with holes before it lets out one last roar before dissipating into black goo.

Io falls back, sitting down with a heavy sigh of relief, her hair a tattered mess falling before her face as she lets out a loud chuckle. "Oh... oh wow! That was... crazy! Fighting is great!"

You let out a chuckle yourself at the sight of Io's sudden giddiness. "Kaz, get over here!" she yells as she rises back to her feet.

You walk over to Io as the mobs you with a hug. "You gotta take me on more missions! That was great!"

"Huh, I guess you've never so much as faced a guardian before..." you mutter as you hug back.

"Looks like the prediction that there were more than one guardian was right," Gado mutters. "I'm sure the other groups are taking care of the rest. Let's just get back to centre for now."

You and your group make your way out of the scorching hot desert and into the centre-point of the region... where you find the rest of the club battling it out with some kind of yellow dragon. They aren't doing too great either, as the Dragon knocks Kiriko back with its tail and lunges towards her. Kiriko braces herself to get a chunk bitten out of her as you instinctively reach for your blade... only to be beaten to the punch.

A strange figure in a red helmet-mask bursts from seemingly out of nowhere with his blade in hand, and in one swift motion, slashes the yellow dragon in half. Who the hell is this supposed to be?

Wait a minute, that armour looks familiar... and that stance... and that sword... wow, you know exactly who this guy is. It's not hard to picture who's underneath that helmet. In fact, you're picturing it right now. Roka.

"What the heck?" Kiriko mutters.

"You're safe now, ma'am!" the man who is clearly Roka announces in a faux-dramatic voice. "Be more careful in the future! For now, you can owe your life to the Red Mask!"

"Are you kidding me?" Kiriko's eyes widen. "Roka?"

"No!" The Red Mask stamps his foot in anger. "I just told you, I'm the Red Mask, you pesky fly!"

"Yep... it's Roka all right..." Kiriko sighs. "Thanks for saving me... Red Mask."

"No problem, ma'am!" The Red Mask gives a salute. "It's my duty to protect!"

>Ah screw it. Humour him, he's had a tough day.

"Whoa, is that the Red Mask?" you ask with faux excitement. "Man, I read some manga about this guy once. But... I always thought he was just a legend..."

"Well, now you know that I'm real!" The Red Mask boasts. "And I'm here to defend the innocent, and crush all the demons beneath my boot!"

"Kaz, what the hell are you talking about?" Kiriko asks. "It's just the dumb ape in a..."

Kiriko pauses as she catches on to what you're doing. "I mean, wow! The Red Mask, in person! I thought you only existed in the cartoons!"

"I'm very confused," Alice scratches her head. "Why is this cartoon superhero here? He should stay in the television set! This can't be good for the universe!"

"I'll explain later," Gado sighs.

"Tell all your friends!" The Red Mask boasts. "You were all saved by The Red Mask, and you had the chance to meet him in person!"

"We will!" Kiriko smiles. "Again... thank you."

"Ooh, that does sound cool!" Kuin gasps. "Gado! I command you to get me his autograph!"

Gado shakes his head. "I doubt he can write one..."

The Darkworld melts away, as the rest of you find yourselves back in your classroom. "The Red Mask" runs off, yelling something about remembering this day, before an out-of-breath Roka enters the room, acting like nothing happened. He's still wearing the same armour as he was five second ago, just without the helmet.

"What did I miss?" he asks.

"Not much," you reply with a weary sigh.

As the rest of you pool of the room, Kiriko stops by Roka. "Hey, I know I've said it before... but I really am sorry... you big dumb ape."

Roka looks up at Kiriko and scoffs. "Oh please, you're acting like you could hurt me with your stupid trick, you pesky fly!"

"What?!" Kiriko gasps. "I'll have you know my prank had impact!"

"All the impact of a teeny fly!" Roka fires back. "Sounds about right for you then!"

"Oh, you are just the worst!" Kiriko yells, and you can't help but break out in a smile as you exit the room. At least those two are back to normal.

"Hey Io," Risa mutters, catching up with you and her. "I heard you did well against one of the guardians."

Io chuckles nervously. "Well, my aim wasn't perfect-"

"Well, it should be," Risa explains. "Listen, you should meet with me tomorrow for some target practice. You need to be on top form if you're going to prove yourself on missions."

Io smiles. "Sure, count me in."

You begin to wander off, before Io rushes up to you again. "Hey, don't think you're getting away that easy, Kaz!"

"Huh?" you ask.

"We need to meet tomorrow morning as well!" she laughs. "We're going to go into town and buy some costumes!"

"What for?

"What do you think, silly?" Io laughs. "Don't you know what's coming up?"

"I... oh no... you can't mean-"

"HALLOWEEN!"

... Dammit.
