You are Captain SAMANTHA WELLINGS, a newly minted captain of the Centauri Accord!

You've finally recovered from your nasty near-boiling incident, but your vacation was now over and it was back to work. You had been transferred back to the Gullinbursti during your recover period, and now the ship was idling in deep space. Frolaytia hadn't given you any new orders or directives yet, so you were honestly free to act on your own initiative, at least for now.

You lean back on your bridge command seat, contemplating your next move. On the display screen, you could see Carly's ship, the Longclaw, similarly idling in the void, no doubt waiting on orders from you. You knew that if you didn't do something soon, Carly would probably go off and do something stupid.

"Hmmmm." You frown and key up Elizabeth's frequency. "Hey, Elizabeth, was there ever any luck in pulling anything out of that data recorder we extracted from that wrecked ship?"

"Oh, you still remember that!" Elizabeth chuckles over the line. "Well, I'm still analyzing the Hegemony spy data, but I've been working on this mystery data as a little side project too, and well, fortunately the encryption wasn't nearly as complex!"

"So you found something?" You almost stand up from your seat in excitement.

"I... think? It's mostly corrupted and unintelligible, but I did find a set of coordinates, apparently from its nav computer."

"Really?" You frown. "What kind of coordinates?"

"Looks like it was the ship's last recorded location before it made the jump to Palm Isle and crashed in the ocean." Elizabeth answers. "But uh... it might be problematic to investigate."

"Why's that?" You ask.

"It's... on the Moon." Elizabeth says sheepishly.

"Wait, the Moon Moon?" You blink in surprise.

"Yep. Luna. The one particular moon in orbit around Earth." Elizabeth confirms.

That was... odd. Other than a few observatories and refueling stations, the Moon was largely uninhabited. It's been that way as long as you could remember.

"Naturally, the problem would be that the Moon's not only faaaaar outside of our jurisdiction, but it's in neutral space, too, as you would know. I don't think the locals would take too kindly to see an Accord military ship flying around."

She was right. SolSec would definitely throw up a stink if you were caught. But you couldn't just ignore this opportunity...

I feel that there are a bunch of supersoldier archetypes:
>the heavily armed and armoured SPACE MARINES (like in 40K)

Maybe we can use our old SolSec contacts to arrange a "vacation" for us and some crew to hit the old stomping grounds. Maybe even visit our parents.

"Maybe we can arrange something fro Frolaytia, assuming we can reach her." You suggest.

"Well, I'll leave it to you, then." Elizabeth says cheerfully. "I'll leave the exact coordinates in the nav computer, so you can leave any time you want!"

"Thanks." You smile a bit at Elizabeth's foresight as you cut the line and dial in Frolaytia's frequency.

The connection seems to take a little longer than it usually does, which is a little concerning, since Frolaytia was nothing if not punctual. However, after a few awkward seconds, Frolaytias hologram finally winks on, and you almost wish that it hadn't.

Your command officer looked absolutely ghoulish, as if she had not had any sleep or rest for the past few days. Her hair was a tangled mess and ugly dark bags under her blank eyes made her look like an upright corpse.

"Um, did I call at a bad time?" You ask, trying to keep a straight expression and fighting the urge to just cut the connection right there.

"Impossibly bad." Frolaytia groans as she gulps down a full pot of coffee before your very eyes. "There's quite a lot of chaos going on behind the scenes due to some... 'recent events.' This of course means endless meetings I have to attend, and, well, considering how galactic time works, this is the result."

Ewwwww. Maybe high command wasn't so glamorous after all.

"Anyways, what did you call for? I doubt it's a charity call." Frolaytia makes a deep sigh.

"Well, actually... I've got a lead on a mission, but I need clearance to head into the Sol System." You say with a bit of trepidation.

"Going into neutral space? If it were any other day, I might try to pull some strings but right now..." Frolaytia sighs and shakes her head. "All I can say is that the political situation is a bit too shaky for me to even think about asking anything like that. But..."

"But?"

"I can write you a set of orders for deep space recon, with a restriction for absolute comm silence. That will let you go dark for a few days and nobody will ask any questions. It's not much, but it's the best I can do." Frolaytia explains.

"That's more than enough." You grin. "Actually, what's going on on your end? Is there anything I can do to help?"

"Well, I'm not sure what kind of assistance you can provide, it's mostly just politics." Frolaytia sighs. "The Hegemony is throwing a massive stink about a data breach on one of their ships, and nobody knows who did it."

Huh, it looks like either Elizabeth hadn't told her bosses, or her bosses didn't tell Frolaytia. Anything was possible with spies.

"Anyways, it's being kept all hush hush, but High Command is bracing for potential retaliation."

"Well, I got an extra ship and captain here that's looking for something to do..."

"You mean your sister?" Frolaytia pauses and finally gives a smile. "Hm, well, I suppose there's always a use for a sledgehammer. Thank you for the offer. I'll find a way to put her to use."

"Good, because the last thing I want is to see her bored. Her mind goes to dark places when that happens." You caution.

"I'll keep that in mind. Just... don't let me read your name in the news."

"Will do." You nod as you cut the connection. "Amy, set us a course for Luna."

"Luna? Um... sure." Amy snaps to attention, activating her controls. "Um, so are we just gonna go in unannounced? There's gotta be someone at SolSec willing to turn a blind eye..."

Well, there was that chance, but last you checked, most of your contacts either left SolSec when it downsized or weren't in high enough positions to influence anything. But hey, you could give it a try, assuming it didn't blow your cover...

"Oh hey... it looks like Nams is still kicking." Lida says with casual surprise.

"Really? I thought she'd have left too when they decommed us." You frown. Nams was a fellow ship captain who worked in your department. Of course, she had met the same fate you did when your unit was disbanded. "What's she doing now?"

"Looks like she's doing local system traffic patrol." Lida explains. "Typical low level stuff, but her area of responsibility includes Luna."

"Good enough." You nod. "Think you can patch a private line to her?"

"Already have." Lida smiles.

"Sam? That you?" You hear Nams' voice. "Holy crap I thought you were dead!"

"I just left for better job opportunities, Nams." You roll your eyes.

"Yeah, well, when you leave the system and don't write or even send a vid message, you kinda assume the worst, right?" Nams laughs. "Anyways, it's great to hear from you! So what law do you want to break here?"

"Why do you assume-" you pause and sigh. "You think you can get an Accord ship legitimate clearance to make a landing on Luna?"

"Hmmmmm." Nams pauses. "I think I can work something out. You can put in for emergency repairs, but your ship will have to stay in orbit where we can see it and you'll only allowed to stay for maybe six hours tops."

"That's not long." You frown.

"Well, it's all I can do. The bigwigs don't like heavily armed military ships hanging around in their space, you know?"

"Yeah, I understand." You sigh.

"Okay, call it in, then Nams. We'll be there in a bit." You say.

"Sure thing!" Nams says sweetly. "And if this little secret mission of yours goes well, we gotta have a drink so you can tell me about it!"

"Heh, I'll keep that in mind." You grin and hit up Carly's comms. "Hey, Carly, I've gotta head to Luna to take care of something. Frolayia should have something for you to do."

"Leaving me already?" Carly groans jokingly. "Some Big Sis you are!"

"Quit being such a baby, you'll be fine for a day or two without me." You laugh. "Hopefully."

"Yeah, well, good luck or whatever." Carly replies.

"All right, Amy, punch it!" You instruct.

Fortunately, Palm Isle is fairly close to Sol, so it doesn't really take more than a few minutes of FTL travel to get there. As soon as you drop out, you're greeted by a small SolSec patrol frigate, painted in the sickeningly bright blue colors of the organization.

"Hi ho, Sam!" Nams voice buzzes cheerfully through the comms. "Ooooooh, I'm so jealous, you get such a cool ship!"

"Why don't you join the dark side with me?" You suggest wryly.

"Ha, love to, but I got family here!" Nams replies. "You know how it is."

"Yeah..."

"Anyways, clock's ticking! I can get you in orbit above Luna and then go on my six hour coffee break. I won't ask any questions!"

"Sure, sure." You nod and turn to see Elizabeth has arrived on the bridge.

"Well, I've looked into those coordinates, and judging from old survey data, it's supposed to be an old helium-3 mine on the dark side of Luna." Elizabeth explains.

"Helium-3?" You frown.

"Back when we still used fusion reactors." Elizabeth shrugs. "Guess nobody bothered to check on it after everybody transitioned to flux."

"I see..."

"Now, we can get a small team down there to check it out." Elizabeth says. "But... this is a real old design. It doesn't actually have a ship dock, so you'd have to EV in."

"Shit." You groan. You hated spacewalking.

"I assume you and Tank will be going in." Elizabeth continues. "Unless you want to bring anybody else...?"

>Do you want to bring any extra crew? Bringing more of them puts more of them at risk of whatever dangers may lurk in the mine!

"I suppose Scott would make the best choice. Who knows what kind of tech we'll find in there." You suggest.

"And how much will need to be fixed?" Elizabeth grins wryly.

"Yep." You nod.

And with that, you and Tank load up in the shuttle. Due to the nature of the mission, you're just wearing the standard light armor, which doubles as your EV suit. Tank of course, was in his regular armor and-

"Wait up!" Scott pants as he dashes for the shuttle, his ill fitting spacesuit weighing him down.

"Good for you to finally join us, Scott." You grin at your engineer. "Saying goodbye to Artya?"

"What are you- of course not!" Scott huffs. "It's just... this damn spacesuit is just so hard to get into!"

"Trust me, I know." You roll your eyes and pull him into the shuttle. "All right, let's go."

And the shuttle launches and quickly makes its way down to the Lunar surface. For a brief second, you catch a glimpse of Earth, the wonderful sapphire jewel of the galaxy. However, it's quickly blocked by the lunar horizon as the shuttle descends. Eventually, the shuttle is shrouded in shadow as it drops into the dark side of the Moon, hidden from the Sun's light.

"Never did like this place." Scott mutters as he looks at the black sea below. "Always a lot of bad stories about this side of the Moon."

"What, you mean like those big scary moon bogeymen?" You nudge your engineer.

"Hey, there's a reason why they abandoned trying to colonize the lunar surface, you know!" Scott insists.

"Yeah, and it had nothing to do with the poor cost-benefit analysis?"

"Just a cover."

"I never took you for a conspiracy theorist, Scott!" You laugh. "Ain't that silly, Tank?"

Tank just shrugs. Might be some truth to it.

"No, you can't possibly believe those ghost stories too, do you?" You frown.

Tank shrugs again.

Before you can say anything more, the shuttle pilot interrupts.

"Captain, I've got two possible LZs. I can see what looks to be the primary mine entrance, but there's also what looks to be a lunar module base about three kilometers away. Where do you want to head to?"

"Touch down at the base first." You order. "We might find something useful down there."

"Roger that." The shuttle pilot nods as the shuttle shifts direction.

"So... how is it that we have an entire mine down there that nobody seems to know about?" Scott wonders.

"Well, after the whole civil war, a lot of records were lost or erased. There's still a lot of old, unregistered facilities we're still finding, even in Sol." You shrug. "This is probably one of them."

"Or maybe it was erased for a reason." Scott frowns.

"Quit the conspiracy theories until AFTER we investigate it." You sigh.

"Right, right." Scott nods.

"Touching down." The shuttle pilot announces. "Better seal up those suits. I'm opening up the airlock."

Scott stumbles with his helmet for a bit but manages to secure it just in time as the shuttle bay doors open.

You've forgotten just how dark it could get in space without light from the sun. Everything was just inky blackness, a direct contrast to all of those PR photos on the Moon's lighter side. Your suit's floodlights automatically activate as you stumble out onto the dusty lunar surface.

Behind you, the shuttle soundlessly lifts off as it departs back to the Gullinbursti. It would return once you called it down, or, in the case you don't contact them in two hours, it'll come down to check on you.

You, Tank, and Scott slowly trudge your way over to the lonely moonbase. Really just a few prefabricated modules all linked together. You see a single airlock, as well as a few derelict moon rovers, still pristine due to the vacuum.

You move up to the airlock and hit the open key. Nothing happens.

Not totally unexpected. The power to this place as probably long dead.

"I got it." Scott steps forward as he pops off an access panel, revealing a large red lever. He motions for Tank to physically pull it and the airlock door swings open. "Manual override."

"Handy." You nod as Tank takes point. Immediately ahead, you see the path branch off three directions.

"Now, judging from the layout I saw from outside, the center passage should lead to the command module." Scott says. "Left should lead to the living quarters and right should lead to the reactor."

"We'll move ahead to the command module." You say.

"S-sure thing." Scott nods, his gesture obscured by his bulky spacesuit.

Tank wordlessly stomps forward, his plasma rifle at the ready, the dull red glow of the weapon illuminating the darkened halls. You now remembered, in the older space structures like this, they had almost no windows at all. Material sciences hadn't advanced to the point where they could put in windows without sacrificing structural stability.

Finally, you enter the command module, where you see all of the computers and control consoles that would normally be used to manage the base.

The only problem was that they were all destroyed. And not just from neglect. These things were literally RIPPED and SMASHED apart.

"Looks like whoever was last here didn't want anybody running this place again." Scott mutters.

Tank's grip on his weapon tightens. Something's not right here.

"M-maybe we should call for backup." You say.

"Yeah..." You nod as you key your comms.

All you get is static.

"Scott, Tank, are your comms working?" You ask.

"N-no!" Scott squeaks. "I'm just getting static!"

Tank shakes his head.

"Some kind of jammer? Or just the construction of this place?" You wonder.

"D-does it matter? We should get out of here!" Scott wails.

>Yeah you should probably leave.

"All right gang, let's search this module for clues." You say.

"But there's no power in here." Scott points out.

"All our suits have their own power sources. Cant take that much to turn on a console or two."

"Assuming they're still working." Scott sighs.

"Well, that's why we brought you along!" You laugh as you slap him on the back, trying to take both of your minds off of how odd this whole situation was.

"R-right." Scott nods as he shuffles over to the least damaged looking console.

You also start scanning the room, while Tank resolutely stands guard, his weapon powered and ready.

You bend down to inspect some dropped folders when you hear an ear piercing shriek over the comms, causing you to wince. Hell, even Tank stiffens up a little in surprise. You turn to see Scott falling on his ass and quickly scrambling backwards.

"Scott, what the fuck!?" You frown. "The hell is wrong with you!?"

Scott has devolved into a blubbering wreck as he points to the main porthole, one of the few windows in the whole base.

And you see it. It was a person, or what you kind of hoped was a person. More specifically, it was a spacesuit, one of those really bulky and old fashioned ones, where the helmet was a huge polarized globe of clear glass.

The figure was just standing there, staring through the porthole wordlessly.

Tank taps you on the shoulder, his weapon aimed directly at the window. It was time to go.

>Yeah, let's get the hell out of here.

"Wait a minute." You step a bit closer to the porthole, staring at the blank helmet on the other side. "Maybe he needs help or something."

Tank puts a hand on your shoulder. Talking to it was NOT a good idea.

"It'll be fine." You say as you key your comm to receive all open channels. "Hey there, can you hear me?"

And you immediately regret your decision when your ears are pierced by static. But not just any static. This sound, it seems to punch past your ears and straight into your bones.

Into your very being.

You're not sure when you fell to the floor, but the next thing you can remember is Tank and Scott carrying you back to the airlock. Tank punches Scott in the shoulder.

"I know! I know! I'm trying to shut off her comm unit!" Scott cries.

N-no, wait.

You think you're starting to make sense of this white noise. As the world blurs and slows around you, the noise starts to clear up. There's a certain clarity to it.

There's... there's something important. If you could just listen to it a little longer...

What you're hearing isn't words, but images... pictures if that made any sort of sense. You see, the mine entrance, a gaping maw deep into the heart of the Moon. There was something down there... something that should stay down there.

You also catch glimpses of barrels, wired together. Tons of mining charges used to bore through the lunar rock. Rigged to blow... to seal the mine? But for some reason they were never detonated.

Was that why you were seeing these visions? You were supposed to set those charges off?

At this point, Tank and Scott have already carried you out of the airlock and into the lunar surface. Outside, you could see that now there were easily a dozen animated spacesuits, shambling towards you with their obscured helmets. You weren't totally sure if they were friendly or not, but the static was getting worse.

You finally shut your comms off as Tank loads you into one of the derelict rovers and Scott leaps into the driver's seat.

"Please work, please work, please work..." Scott mumbles as he hits the power button.

And miraculously enough, the rover hums to life, still somehow intact and operational after all these years.

"YES!" Scott whoops. "Now if we can find some kind of radio antenna, we might be able to get a signal to the ship..."

"No, we head for the mine." You insist. "There's something down there that we need to make sure stays down there."

"What the hell are you talking about?!" Scott yells. "We should-"

"There's not guarantee that we're going to find a working antenna or comm relay out here." You explain to Scott. "And whatever's jamming our signals, it's not coming from the base so it's got to be coming from a mine! You get it?"

"I-I guess." Scott whimpers.

"Good, now STEP ON IT!" You order.

Scott stamps down on the pedal and the rover jets down lunar surface at such speed that even hitting a relatively shallow hill felt like you would achieve escape velocity under the Moon's weak gravity.

You leave behind the base and the mysterious shambling spacesuits, heading towards the structure covering the mouth of the mineshaft.

Unfortunately, more of the spacesuits are blocking the way, as if they knew what you were trying go do.

"What do we do?" Scott whines.

"Scott, how much air do you think you can get on this thing?" You ask with a grin.

"Oh no, Captain... why?!" Scott groans.

"Unless you want to get up close and personal with those things."

"Okay, fine! FINE!" Scott closes his eyes and puts the pedal to the metal, speeding to the rover right towards the steepest hill he could find.

"Tank, you better grab hold of something!" You warn.

Tank nods and grips one of the handrails tightly as Scott ramps the rover off the hill.

The rover flies, or more accurately, floats through the air, taking advantage of the Moon's low gravity to vault over the barrier of spacesuits, which grasp aimlessly at your airborne vehicle, even though you were hopelessly out of reach of them.

And luckily enough, Scott managed to hit the hill at just the right speed and angle, as your rover was headed right for the mouth of the shaft.

"Tank!" You yell.

Tank doesn't need any more prompting. He grabs a grenade from his belt and tosses it like a star baseball pitcher. The explosive detonates, shattering the protective cap over the mine shaft and creating an opening for the rover to drop through.

"So uh, what's the plan now, Captain?" Scott asks, unsure of what to do.

You were determined to ride this thing all the way down. You didn't nearly boil yourself alive and fly all the way out here just to turn with nothing! You needed to do this.

But did you really need to drag Scott and Tank into it, too? Sure, they could be useful backup, but it didn't feel right putting them in danger for your own selfish needs.

And you go down, and down, and down, passing by who knows how many levels. Like the surface above, it was completely pitch black down here, the only illumination coming from your floodlights and the rover's headlights.

It kind of felt like dropping down into the belly of a monster.

Finally, there's a WHUMP as the rover finally touches down on the bottom of the shaft. You take the chance to look around, and all you see are massive vats containing... some kind of liquid.

"What... what is this?" You wonder aloud. "This doesn't look like mining equipment."

"Because it isn't." Scott gasps as he shuffles up to one of the tanks, reading the writing on the side. "These are... containers."

"For what?" You ask, dreading the answer.

"Nanomachines." Scott explains. "This isn't a mine, it's a factory!"

"A nanite factory on the Moon?" You frown. "Why?"

"Considering the age of all this equipment, this was all obviously early research." Scott mumbles as he digs through old consoles. "And it looks like... oh shit."

Scott points to several of the vats at the end, which look to have been breached. There was a huge rent in the containers, and you could see that they were clearly empty.

"A containment breach!" Scott explains. "Now that makes sense. If the nanites got out and managed to make contact with organic matter, depending on how they were programmed..."

"We get those space zombies out there?" You point up the shaft.

"Trust me, you don't want to know how that works." Scott shakes his head. "But uh, let's just say that those guys up there probably used to be the people who staffed this place."

"Wonderful." You sigh.

"Can... can we please just get out of here now?" Scott mutters. "As cool as it is to see living examples of proto-nanites, this stuff is obviously some very heavy shit."

"Yeah, let's blow this joint and get out of here." You say grimly. "I saw some planted charges on the way down. Obviously it looks like these guys tried to seal the mine before they got infected."

"Obviously they weren't fast enough." Scott sighs. "Okay, let's go."

Thanks to the Moon's low gravity, it's a simple matter to climb your way back up the shaft. Probably why you didn't see any kind of elevator down here or anything. Tank follows closely behind, his weapon ready to fire at anything that tried threatening you.

You finally see the explosive charges, all planted on the shaft's structural braces. Just from a glance, you could definitely tell that they were placed in a way to cause the shaft to collapse in on itself.

"Charges armed!" Scott exclaims. "Timer is... FIFTEEN FUCKING SECONDS?!"

It's at that moment Tank grabs the both of you, braces his legs against one of the struts, and PUSHES, launching himself and the both of you out of the shaft like a rocket. You all barely manage to clear the mouth of the shaft when the charges blow, sealing it for good.

Almost immediately, you see the Gullinbursti dropping altitude, no doubt to investigate the explosion. Well, no better way to get their attention, you guess...

---

"Very interesting." Elizabeth nods. "So we stumbled upon an old, and possibly highly illegal, nanite research lab? That's very interesting."

"Harrowing, more like." You sigh, suddenly feeling very tired. "So, what should be done about it?"

"You're asking me?" Elizabeth chuckles. "Well, I see three options. Either we just keep quiet about this and never tell another living soul, we inform High Command and Intelligence about this so they can follow up on the investigation, or we palm the whole thing off to SolSec and hope they're competent enough to handle things."

"I think we'll pass this up to Command when we get the chance." You say. "I honestly don't think SolSec can handle something like this."

"Understood, Captain." Elizabeth gives a playful salute. "Also, Natalia's sent in her report. Looks like you, Scott, and Tank are all completely nanite free!"

It somehow made you a little angry and slightly jealous that Tank would strip for Natalia but not for you. So unfair!

"Is something wrong, Captain?" Elizabeth asks.

"O-Oh, it's nothing!" You shake your head rapidly. "Just thinking!"

"Well, Natalia also says that you should get some rest." Elizabeth winks. "We'll see you tomorrow!"

"Yeah, sure." You nod as you yawn. You wait until Elizabeth leaves your quarters before finally stripping off your uniform.

However, you pause. You almost thought you saw your nanomachine swimsuit just sitting there on your dresser. However, when you look back to focus, there was nothing there.

J-just your imagination, right?
