You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and your lovely, charming wife has a certain sensitivity to Nepeta cataria: commonly called 'catnip'. It's a substance she can usually avoid by the smell, but that Coyote has succeeded in sneaking in with the pipe-weed he sent you to share with her. The result? Yoruichi is now gazing across your office at you with a self-possessed smirk, the kind of look that means you're going to have your hands full until you can calm her back down again.

“What's happening?” your part-divine shadow, Tenri, asks as she takes a cautious step away from Yoruichi to make sure she's not even close to being between the two of you.

You take a moment to check the location of the nearest window, and circle slowly around the room to ensure that it's directly behind your new position. Yoruichi watches the movement, her keen eyes locked on you.

“When she's exposed to catnip, Yoruichi can get a little... forward,” you explain, choosing your words carefully. “It's not like she does anything she doesn't want to. More like she can't not do the things she does want to do.”

“Don't you worry your little head,” Yoruichi purrs, sparing Tenri a glance out the corners of her eyes as she slowly saunters towards you. “You're not the one I'm interested in.”

You sigh wearily, considering your options. Though it's not as bad as it used to be, there are only a few people in the Seireitei who can deal with Yoruichi in the rare cases where she gets like this. In Kisuke's case there's a certain trick to it: in the past he's suggested that Yoruichi do things she already kind of wants to do anyway, which only works to the degree that her own priorities can be aligned with his. Suì Fēng on the other hand was occasionally able to get Yoruichi to listen to her back during her days as a Lieutenant, but never where catnip was involved. But your burden is by far the heaviest in the sense that Yoruichi is almost always willing to cooperate with you, likely even now.

“Guess I've got no other choice then,” you admit, removing Tenkotsuki and Kobara no Tachi and setting them aside. “Let's do this.”

“My pleasure,” Yoruichi replies, her almost sweet tone at odds with the fact that she's already throwing the opening punch. “It's only a few minutes, so let's have some fun!”

Though you stop her initial lunge with your arm Yoruichi follows through in a way you don't expect, hooking her leg behind yours and turning to strike with her elbow. Even though you block her strike again the force pivots you over her leg, and you both crash to the floor with you on your back and her on top of you.

“And here I was expecting a fight,” she taunts as she pins you down by your shoulders. “But this could be nice too.”

“Were you really? Because it seems to me like you were holding back.”

Yoruichi laughs softly to herself, and her grip on your shoulders relaxes ever so slightly. "Now whatever gave you that impression?"

“How many years have I known you for?”

Yoruichi's grin turns devious. "I held back, wife, because I knew you would be holding back as well. Remind me, how many years have I known you for?"

“More than I like to admit,” you grumble.

It seems from her attitude like you were right, and that while she's not totally in control at the moment Yoruichi will still pretty much cooperate with you however you want to handle this. You have to keep her occupied and out of trouble somehow, for her own sake and for those around you, and two options immediately suggest themselves. Behind you is a window that leads out into the courtyard where Tatsuki has been training, and if you can roll Yoruichi off of you it'd be easy to lead her out there. After that you could kill two birds with one stone, entertaining your wife with a fight while giving Tatsuki a demonstration of hakuda at its highest level. That way you could turn Coyote's little prank to your advantage, and 'outplay' him.

Or you could just put her to sleep.

Yoruichi's energy and enthusiasm may be near-limitless, but right now she's relaxed enough that she's being pulled in two directions. Part of her wants to play, part of her would rather just take a nap. Appeal to that latter half and you may get her to simply clock out on the spot, also outplaying Coyote in the process.

It feels good to have options.

By the way, How long is Yoruichi's "drunken phase" whenever she gets drunk on the "3am drunk?".
Also, if Yoruichi gets "catnip drunk", does Raijusenko also get "catnip drunk"? I can just imagine the lightning cat rolling around on the porch acting high as fuck while Tatuski struggles to survive against a "catnip drunk" Yoruichi.

Free information: this lasts about ten to fifteen minutes, same as how long cats who react to catnip are affected, and manifests in somewhat similar ways. IC Raijūsenkō is the part of Yoruichi's instincts and soul that causes her to have the reaction in the first place, and OOC are what (when unchecked) lead to her kinda dumb transformation in canon.

You quickly decide to move this outside, since even if she's 'playing nice' with you Yoruichi's unlikely to extend the same courtesy to your office. The garden outside is a bit more open, and out there you'll be able to give Tatsuki a good demonstration in the bargain. So you carefully tuck your legs in, roll back, and propel Yoruichi through the open window with a surprised yelp before following her with hirenkyaku.

Your wife lands lightly on her toes, backpedaling effortlessly to gain a little space as you drop from the edge of the roof to join her. Tatsuki looks at you in confusion.

“Why did you just throw Yoruichi out the window?” she asks, glancing from her to you. “Are you having a fight or something?”

“Something like that,” you agree, raising your fists into a high ready position and inviting Yoruichi to do the same. She adopts a similar stance, feet barely even touching the ground as she looks you over.

“Fine, if you won't come to me...”

Yoruichi aims a high kick at your head and you duck, only to feel her other leg connect with your arm and shoulder as she follows through in midair. Shifting your stance forward allows you to through a right uppercut that Yoruichi blocks with her arm before pushing off you into the air. You ready for her next move, a classic boxing stance preparing you for the very moment her toes touch the ground and she uses a shunpō to instantly accelerate back towards you.

“Watch carefully,” you advise Tatsuki as you use your arms to redirect most of Yoruichi's momentum to the side before blocking a spinning kick towards your ribs. “This is how two masters of hakuda fight... try not to blink.”

With that, you move to match your wife's technique with a similar speed and technical mastery. She's still holding back a little, having likely deduced your intention even before you explained it to Tatsuki, and you're a little more comfortable in taking an equally playful approach.

You lure Yoruichi into using shunpō again, allowing her to strike a clone as you use Utsusemi to attack her from behind. Despite performing the move with a fluidity and precision most other 'masters' would be hard-pressed to match, attacking even as you complete the final step with your hirenkyaku which lets you lunge towards Yoruichi's exposed back, she's ready for you. She twists back and right, catching your arm as your fist passes over her and throwing you over her shoulder before using shunpō yet again to catch up with you. Blows are exchanged at blinding speed, hers pummeling you backwards through the air as you create a tenuous footing for yourself in the air above you, leaving you with no time to compose a counterattack. The air crackles and pops with static as your reiatsu and Yoruichi's swirl and clash.

Finally you near a wall, and manage to use two steps to kick off of it and reengage with Yoruichi after righting yourself, sweeping low with your right leg then pushing off with your left as she dodges. Your heel strikes heavily against her wrists and she's thrown backwards, only to recover instantly with a shunpō that takes her back to where you started.

A hirenkyaku allows you to rejoin her in an instant, squared off once more as Tatsuki's jaw hangs in awe.

“Are you two trying to kill each other?” she muses, eyes still wide as Yoruichi walks slowly towards you once more. “I couldn't keep up!”

“Have you ever seen someone sashay to a murder?” you chuckle in response. “No, this isn't really a fight. This is flirting.”

“I hate to break it to you two,” Tatsuki counters, shaking her head in disbelief, “but I've seen flirting before, and I'm pretty sure this isn't how it's done.”

“Maybe you've just been doing it wrong?” Yoruichi suggests playfully.

“Tatsuki,” you instruct cheerfully “your mission should you choose to accept it, is to play with Yoruichi for a while without dying.”

“Don't wanna,” Yoruichi frowns.

Tatsuki sighs in relief, like she's just had a death sentence commuted at the last second. “Oh thank god!”

“I mean she's strong for a human, but for either of us she's just gonna be boring as hell!” Yoruichi continues, throwing a quick combination of punches and kicks that you expertly block.

“What the hell does that mean, Yoruichi?” Tatsuki demands, eyes narrowing as she falls for Yoruichi's taunt. “What's gotten into you?”

You carefully block a punch, crossing your arms and locking wrists with Yoruichi. Pushing back and forth, each of you launch one probing kick after the next, carefully testing one anothers' footing until Yoruichi's forced to sidestep a punch aimed at the back of her head.

“I see you've grown a spine again!” Yoruichi comments cheerfully. “That's good, but you'll need more than that to keep up!”

Even with Yoruichi's focus mostly on you, Tatsuki's nowhere near the level where she can keep up with a Captain and she almost immediately catches a foot to her teeth for her trouble. The human girl slams into the wall behind her leaving spiderwebs of cracks, though you take the opportunity to wrap a small reishi chain around your wife's wrist and pull her off balance for a moment.

“How!?” Tatsuki demands, rebuffed again as Yoruichi uses shunpō to sidestep and kick Tatsuki under the ribs even as she blocks a punch, which you follow up by turning in place with hirenkyaku and trying to kick her in the back. One step ahead of you, Yoruichi leaves behind an afterimage for you to kick in half and comes to a stop a few feet behind you.

“You have my back,” you offer, spreading your arms and practically begging her to attack. “Why don't you attack?”

You blink once, ducking low as Tatsuki comes flying over you after being bodily thrown by your wife.

“Okay, so that's why,” you shrug as you're forced to raise your arms to stop a falling axe kick.

Tatsuki stares at you, almost beside herself. “How do you two do it? You're not using much more reiatsu than I am, so why can't I even come close!? Were you holding back that much when we sparred that first time, Riku?”

“Of course she and I fight differently than you do. What made you think we wouldn't?” Yoruichi replies calmly, stepping back away from you and circling to your right. Her amber eyes don't stray for even an instant as she seems to analyze everything about you in search of anything that might betray your thoughts or vulnerabilities.

“I've seen and done things you and your friends wouldn't believe,” you explain carefully. “That's why my instincts and skills are so finely honed. Such ability is partly inborn, yes, and you've had a good start.”

“But you're inexperienced,” Yoruichi continues, almost casually abusing shunpō to launch a rapid series of punches from several different directions, each expertly blocked before you force her away with a sweep of your leg. “You've only been at this for a few months. Riku and I were on the front lines in the 'war to end all wars', then in the war that came after that, fighting for our lives and for those under our command.”

You pick up the thread, going on the offensive at the same time. Each step, each strike, each block... every movement set to the fluid tempo and countertempo of your respective footwork. “Earthquakes, bombs, artillery barrages, pandemics... all of these draw hollows into the living world to threaten humans. Shinigami adapt and grow or die, and when the fighting is the worst we Captains take the field ourselves.”

“That's how we do it. It's the instinct and experience drawn from decades, even centuries of survival.”

“So I can't match that?” Tatsuki concludes grimly, “Is that what you're trying to tell me?”

>No, and you shouldn't even try. Rely on your human instincts and training, they're just as valid.

>In time, your instincts will sharpen. But you need to start with the basics the same as we did.

Thing about Bleach is that it seems to be implicit to the setting that the closer you are to death, the faster your power grows. Naturally, the people who survive all the shit that gets thrown their way find themselves so far above the norm that they can't even see it from where they're standing.

>>That's right. But that only applies to fighting like we do... so learn to fight your own way.

Of course, she'll still need to consider how her opponents would fight in their way. You don't counter or survive by going toe-to-toe against someone ahead in experience, you figure out ways around it instead. Bring something unique and unexpected to the table.

>That only applies to fighting like we do... so learn to fight your own way. You can still learn a LOT from observing us, but once you have the basics down and figured out a fighting style that suits you, that's when the magic begins. Multiply that with the teaching environment you're in to the power of how ludicrously experienced your current tutors (me and Yoruichi) over your human instincts and training, and you have a formula for an easier access to fighting at a higher weight level.
>Still, your instincts will sharpen over time so you'll eventually get there, and also consider the fact that you opponents will try to fight in a way that lets them hold the field advantage. So consider that as well while you're training.

“That's exactly right,” you agree even while continuing to trade furious blows with Yoruichi. “You'll never be able to catch up with two centuries or more of combat experience, and you'll never be able to truly fight the way we do. Not with only one human lifetime to work with.”

“But don't get too down over it!” Yoruichi insists cheerfully, taking a quick swipe at your face to cover a sweep at your ankles that takes you off your feet for a moment before you can spring back off your hands. Yoruichi leans back to avoid a rising kick. “Because you don't have to fight like us. In fact... I don't even think you should try.”

“What do you mean?”

“You skipped a step,” you explain as you counter one of Yoruichi's kicks with a high kick of your own, then a second lower kick that meets her ankle, and then a third roundhouse that meets her own in response, “in that you never really got the basics down. We can teach you those... none better, really!”

With a grunt of exertion you move to block Yoruichi's fist as she dramatically changes styles on you, settling into a lower stance and charging forwards with her hands raised in a somewhat loose boxer's guard.

Wait, you think to yourself, this is new...

“You'll only reach your potential by learning your own advantages,” she tells Tatsuki as she slips a hook past your guard, “not merely by mimicking us!”

When you throw your own punch Yoruichi grabs your wrist and steps behind you with shunpō, nearly wrenching your shoulder from its socket and striking you in the back of the head with her elbow. Your visions swims as you respond in kind with an elbow of your own that loosens her grip on you just enough to break free and reverse the hold on her. Your left hand finds her shoulder and presses her forward as your left leg hooks in front of her shins in a powerful throw... which she simply follows through with. The momentum twists her wrist free of your grasp and lets her land evenly on her feet.

“You clever girl...” you grin, adopting the hand position of a muay thai guard. “You went and learned a new style, didn't you?”

Yoruichi grins right back at you, rushing in with a kick of her lead foot that you counter with your knee shifting into a southpaw stance as you await a punch that never comes. “Nope... just took your example, wife.”

A sweeping kick forces you onto your back foot, and about a handful's worth of gravel flies towards your face. You instinctively shut your eyes, and open them to find a closed fist hovering a few centimeters in front of them.

“You're pretty good,” you compliment Yoruichi as she relaxes her arm, lowering her fist.

She glances down at your foot, where you stopped it just before stomping the exposed side of her kneecap with it. “It's still a work in progress.”

“What was that just now?” Tatsuki wonders aloud. “It wasn't kung fu at all... more like Vale Tudo.”

“That's actually quite perceptive,” Yoruichi admits, exchanging a brief congratulatory fist-bump with you. “But you're wrong on a few counts. It fuses jujutsu and Shorinji kempo in a similar manner to how Vale Tudo fuses its parent styles, but really the end result is closer to Krav Maga.”

“It was really unexpected,” you tell her. “Have you learned how to combine it with heihuquan, or your butterfly swords?”

“Who do you think I am?”

You shrug, conceding the point immediately. Of course she's already figured that out, she wouldn't use something against you if she hadn't thought it through at least that far. “Wait, how long have you been thinking clearly?”

Yoruichi smirks. “Oh, not long at all!”

Theoretically they are both near the same stage of development and are quite acquainted with each other so it would work out well.

Yoru teaches Tatsuki while Riku fetches Rukia so she can both cram them together in the training program. Two burds with 1 rock and a lightning cat.

Oh, and you might want to consider that any fighter worth his salt would easily take advantage of a subpar combatant trying to cover her inexperience with flash steps. It's probably a better idea for Tats to have a solid foundation and build up from there with reishi shenanigans.

“I'm going to go see if Kuchiki is able to move yet,” you declare, turning to leave. “Yoruichi, if you're feeling back to normal I'll leave you to do as you please, but I'd appreciate if you let Tenri know where I've gone.”

“I'll hang around a bit longer,” Yoruichi yawns, stretching her arms as she turns back to your home. “Besides, we've still got two artifacts to puzzle out.”

That's actually a fair point. The pipe was just the first of three divine objects you need to figure out how to use and draw shinreiryoku from, and if this was any indication the others will be a pain in the ass as well. Not to mention that it's clear at least the masu was meant to be shared as well.

“We'll deal with that next,” you promise.

It takes moments to reach the infirmary, where you find that Kuchiki is right where you left her after yesterday's fight with Mask de Masculine. This time however she's a bit more conscious, if still in rough shape.

“Please forgive my appearance, Captain,” she apologizes queitly. “I'm afraid I didn't get through my battle as cleanly as the others did.”

“And you'll have to forgive me as well, Captain,” a new voice agrees as Lieutenant Kotetsu joins you from across the ward. “I'm under orders from Captain Unohana to oversee Third Seat Kuchiki's recovery.”

You raise an eyebrow at the skyscraper of a Lieutenant as she bows politely, her long beaded sidelocks and dangling earrings swinging as she does so. “Byakuya put her up to this.”

“Captain Kuchiki was concerned about his sister's recovery,” Isane admits quietly, “and while few can argue with the results your Commandos attain it's common knowledge that you push them harder than any other seated officers in the Gotei 13.”

“Because they can take it,” you counter. “If they couldn't I wouldn't have selected them.”

“I'm sorry, Captain,” Isane bows again, sincerity clear in her voice, “but this is an affair of the Kuchiki house. Unohana didn't like it either, but she accepted the political reality of the situation. Until such time as Kuchiki recovers, I can't let you push her at all. Even though I do agree with your assessment.”

>Then I bear sole responsibility for taking her with me, and you can tell Byakuya as much.

>Explain to Rukia how you fought Mask with a hole in your gut. Let her decide from there.

“And if she were to leave on her own power?”

Isane frowns, glancing down at Rukia in her bed. “My orders are to ensure nobody interferes with her recovery, and to speed it along as best I can.”

“I see,” you sigh before looking Rukia straight in the eye. “Do you know how I managed to fight Mask in the condition I was in?”

“With a hole through your stomach?” she asks, staring at the ceiling. “No. I've been wondering that since I woke up, Captain.”

“Brooding, more like,” Kai interrupts.

Nearby, Mirai briefly looks up from the book in her hand, glancing over at her fellow Third Seat. “We both know that feeling, Nikko.”

“The trick is simple,” you continue, ignoring your other two Commandos for now. “I fought with that wound for two reasons. First is that I knew I had no choice, and that so many lives were in the balance I couldn't afford to lose.”

“Desperation?” Rukia asks glumly.

“Focus,” you correct. “O la vittoria, o tutti accoppati – either we win, or we all die. Having no way out but forward tends to encourage that mindset.”

“And the second reason?”

“The Onmitsukidō taught me to ignore pain and discomfort, the things that hold you back from accomplishing your goals, and to focus on what you still have available. Lose one ability, sense, or limb... simply use the others. But in any case, continue to move forward as best you can.”

“That sounds unhealthy,” Isane comments.

“And I'd normally agree,” you nod. “We shinigami are tough, but not invincible... but when the alternative is to die in battle, or to allow those who fight beside you to die? I've seen humans pull themselves up in the midst of battle with that determination, and accomplish incredible feats in the face of their own mortality. Those of us who call ourselves Commandos, Lieutenants, or Captains all come to that understanding. I believe that even you understand that essential truth, Lieutenant Kotetsu.”

Your eyes meet Isane's and hold them there, as if she's unable to look away. “When faced with death, any alternative is preferable.”

“Consider those points, Third Seat Kuchiki,” you conclude, turning to leave the infirmary. “My wishes for your speedy recovery.”

But as you begin to walk away, you hear a commotion. Looking back you see that Rukia has struggled out of bed, much to your surprise, leaning heavily on her sword to prop herself up. She's barely standing, and even Kai and Mirai seem nervous at her condition... but the fact remains that she is standing, and the look in her eyes is one of cool determination. You imagine many hollows last memories are of a similar look in your own eyes.

“Well now, that's more like it!” you grin. “Looks like you've finally made up your mind, Kuchiki Rukia.”

It's a win-win gambit, because if anyone but Yoruichi smokes it, it probably wouldn't even be noticed.

Also that bit probably wouldn't have been written in.

Or maybe it was for Yoruichi, and examining it would've revealed the catnip and thus made it obvious who it was for, and we need to do the same for the other artifacts.

I'm just probably just in shadowruns mode for no reason and we get to do whatever we want with them. Stick it up the cooch, who cares? As long as the divinity gets absorbed.

“Now hold still, Kuchiki,” you instruct. “I'm going to heal you partway, using kaidō through your blood. It won't heal you completely, nor will I replenish your reiatsu completely.”

Kuchiki nods in understanding as you slit your own palm. Isane recoils at the sight.

“Captain, what are you doing!?”

You press your palm against the deepest of Kuchiki's wounds, and allow your blood to flow into her body. “To use this trick I need to be bleeding. You know I was a quincy when I was alive, I trust?”

“I think everyone at Lieutenant or above does, ma'am,” Isane replies. “Why?”

“There's a technique called Blut,” you explain. “In a past life I used to be able to use that to heal my own body from the inside. By pushing my own blood into someone else, I can heal them in the same way.”

“What about your hollowfication?” Isane asks, examining Kuchiki's wound as you heal it. “Isn't there a risk of infection?”

You shake your head. “No. Not only has it never happened before, but the infectious agent seemed to have a fairly short life by design. Otherwise anyone I ever cut with my sword would probably have been infected same as Yoruichi and I were. Zaraki'd have been one for a century otherwise.”

“As much as I hate the man Aizen knew what he was doing.”

“I see,” the Lieutenant frowns as you complete your task.

“That should be fine,” you nod, stopping the healing as soon as you feel Kuchiki will be able to fight. This should make for a significant challenge to manage her limited reiatsu and physical injuries, and satisfy Isane's orders. “So will you stay here, Lieutenant?”

Isane looks at Rukia thoughtfully as she tightens her kosode. “I suppose this fulfills my duties. I can stay here and tend to your other Commandos if you want.”

“Please do.”

With a subtle gesture you silently order Rukia to follow you, and offer Kai and Mirai a polite bow. Really not much more than a nod at that point, but the significance of even receiving a bow from their Captain is lost on neither of the two. Kuchiki for example would never even consider bowing to anyone except under the most exceptional circumstances, and out of the other Captains the only one particularly known for bowing to her peers is Unohana who's polite to almost everyone she meets.

You lead Rukia back to where Tatsuki and Yoruichi have been waiting, and notice something of an unseasonable chill in the air. Is Hitsugaya working out somewhere?

"Kuchiki," Tatsuki greets your Commando in a cool voice.

With no warmer a tone Rukia responds in kind. "Arisawa. Why are you in my Captain's garden?"

"Training," the human teen replies, with what feels like an unspoken accusation. "And what have you been up to lately?"

"Recovering from a near-fatal wound," Rukia explains.

Yoruichi, who's been eying the two as they trade icy jabs, cocks her eyebrow at you and makes a mocking, claw-like motion with one hand.

Tatsuki freezes in place as you glare at her, and to your side you can practically feel Rukia stop breathing at the very same moment.

“Would either of you two young ladies care to explain to me why it is that you're acting like spoiled brats chasing after the same boy?” you growl, and to your immense displeasure Tatsuki's eyes immediately find your shoes and resolutely avoid your gaze. Rukia too remains silent.

Your hand finds your forehead as you sigh. “Don't tell me that's it? This is about Ichigo, isn't it?”

“Kind of,” Tatsuki mutters quietly.

Yoruichi perches herself on a nearby rock, watching in fascination as the drama unfolds. “Well, maybe you weren't doing it wrong after all... flirting, that is. Boy's thick as a brick wall when it comes to women.”

“It isn't like that,” Rukia insists in a low voice, almost as if she hoped you wouldn't hear her.

“Then what is it like?”

“If Ichigo hadn't met Kuchiki none of this would have happened,” Tatsuki explains with a mutinous scowl at your Commando. “His entire family's gotten dragged into this mess because of it!”

Rukia glares right back at her. “And had you kept him from coming here as I had intended he would never have been hurt the way he was! The Central 46 wouldn't know about him either. The last thing I wanted was for him to put himself at further risk over me!”

“Ichigo would never listen to that sort of talk, you know that!”

“He would have listened to you!”

Enough,” you insist loudly. “Ichigo needs your help now, and as you are neither of you has the strength to fight at his side. You're both important to him, and you both know as well as I do that he'll gladly accept getting hurt to keep you safe if he feels he must. Though he'd never say it to you, I'll tell you what you are to him right now.”

“You are both liabilities.”

The garden falls silent once your voice stops. No catty responses are exchanged, no accusations leveled, no defenses offered. The full weight of your words sinks in slowly, as difficult truths usually do.

“So if you want to change that, listen very carefully: I want the two of you to begin drilling your shunpō. Rukia, you will offer any pointers you can until Tatsuki can match you. Then you will push each others' speed until one of you collapses or the sun goes down. Whichever happens first.”

“Do I make myself abundantly clear?”

“Yes, ma'am,” Kuchiki bows. “I apologize for my previous outbursts.”

“Understood, sensei,” Tatsuki bows as well. “Sorry to be a pain in your ass.”

“I don't care,” you sigh, sitting down next to Yoruichi, “so quit wasting each others' time with apologies and get to work already.”

Just to reinforce that Riku is still able to chew them out like common nasty drill Sargent in military boot camp, she was soft on them with their initial training, Rukia's sheltered upbringing into Commando rank by Riku personal tutelage, and Tatsuki with Riku personally helping her become a living Shimigami like Berryboy via a dangerous soul surgery operation, but now the two need to realize that "playtime is over" AND RIKU NEEDS EVERYONE TO GET THEIR WARFACE ON.

Given Japanese customs over the time in terms of ceremonial use, it's often they use the box by filling it to the brim with wine, the more full the box is the more it means for their wealth/health/life to be prosperous, overfilling the box is also a sign of generosity.

I think this is Riku and Yoruichi discussing which artifact they plan to try out next. They're not actually going to use the artifact, it's more like setting up an appointment, all the while monitoring Tatsuki and Yoruichi in their training.

Still no idea what to do with this. Like the one time Artemis wanted a human sacrifice it didn't really turn out well/she actually just wanted to fuck the sacrifice and switched her with a deer.

Grab a deer, and stab it.
>>
sacrificial daggers I think was more of a communal thing among the greeks for delivering the killing blow to a sacrificial animal for the community to feast upon for a meal, but of course they had to respect the greek pantheon and all that so they added a ceremonial flair to the process.
>>
>>767693
it's gotta be a ghost one, not a mortal live one. Sacrificial animals to be considered: Goats, Deer, pig, cow, rabbits, fowl, sheep, lamb.
The dagger might also have a requirement of the sacrifice being acquired from hunting quarry.
>>
>>767693
Artemis really doesn't seem to like deer being killed, though it could be she just doesn't like the specific deer she likes being killed.
>>
>>767416
>it's often they use the box by filling it to the brim with wine, the more full the box is the more it means for their wealth/health/life to be prosperous

Maybe it's meant for Shunsui? Y'know, after taking the reins from the Old Man.

And he really likes drinking too.
>>
Wait, maybe it's for cutting off the best portions of a meal and throwing them into a fire. How Greeks were supposed to honor the gods at meals.

>From the last thread: “This must be a ceremonial weapon. The blade geometry is all wrong for a hunting knife, and the ornamentation adds no functional purpose. I'm getting as much from Shōsōtō.”
Not a bad suggestion, the only issue with that however is that we're performing a greek ceremony to a Greco-Roman deity on spirit-Japanese soil.
>>
>>767856
Ah, but here's the thing: WE are the 'deity' that's supposed to benefit from this ritual.

So perhaps we need someone to carve up a sacrifice made to Riku. Which Yoruichi may be able to help with.

Another thought about the Masu box is that drinking wine from a masu box has a different flavor/taste compared to drinking heated sake from a porcelain cup. The wood in the masu box actually adds flavor to the wine which I think is how you get the shinreiryoku from the box, by literally drinking the shinreiryoku infused wine from the masu box.
>pic related
>>
>>767906
so.... stab the sacrifice being offered with the knife and let the shinreiryoku diffuse through the meat before eating it? We got the shinreiryoku from Coyote's pipe by smoking the shinreiryoku through the pipe, so it should make sense that the artifacts need to infuse shinreiryoku through another object for consumption through their use.
>>
>>767999
That sounds plausible. It's worth a try.
>>
I'll leave you all with a thought for the night: Coyote, Inari, and Artemis all want Riku to figure out how to use these three objects properly. She already figured out the pipe, and the fact that there was catnip in the pipeweed basically confirms that not only were they meant to smoke it but that she was intended to do so with Yoruichi.

So with that in mind, try not to overthink it too much. While there are definitely "wrong" ways to do it the "right" way is not going to be super obscure or painfully specific. And one of you definitely has one of the two completely figured out.
>>
>>768407

Huh, that's it for the night? Oh well.

As for which one is completely figured out, I'd guess it's the Masu box. That sounds like a very solid deduction there.

Does make me wonder if there's a way to confirm that yes, we've done it right, as Coyote did with the catnip. That was clever, and I wonder if the goddesses were just as clever..
>>
>>768544
Yeah, that's it for the night. I'm pretty beat.
>>
>>768553
Fair enough. Are you planning to continue tomorrow?

>>
>>768688

>>
I just had an idea.

Let's get Orihime in here to restore the pipe to its original state, with the shinreiryoku. Or some of the other stuff. Then rinse and repeat until we (and Yoruichi) have enough shinreiryoku.

Or both are too baked to continue smoking.
>>
>>769307
I think shinreiryoku is susceptible to time shenanigans. Also thinking about the sacrificial dagger, most greek/roman sacrifices use either behead the sacrifice with an axe or simply use sacrifical dagger to slit the throat. Considering Artemis gave us a dagger, that means we'll need to find the throat of a livestock to slit for a blood-offering sacrifice. And considering how shinreiryoku works when it comes to infusions or transferring through object use, the shinreiryoku's gonna end up in the blood since we're using the dagger.
>>
>>769393
Blood sausage anyone? Shits good.
>>
>>769393
Eh, we may want to try anyway. Orihime's power would be very useful for this...presuming we don't let Aizen know about it and have him try this method. We don't need a rescue Orihime arc.

Though if the objects can be restored but minus shinreiyoku, it may be worth trying to use Orihime to fix Kukaku's arm. We could give her back her arm, without the King's Key. Everyone is happy.

Except the Royal Guard, who are probably now freaked out about Orihime's power, but they can join the club.
>>
A theory on Artemis' Contribution:

Artemis is the Goddess of the Hunt, one of her sacred animals was the Golden Hind. So in that respect, shouldn't we use that alongside Apacci?

Then considering that Artemis is also the Protector of Children, Virgins, and Pregnant Mothers, and the dagger itself, it's pretty obvious that some blood-letting will need to be done.

Between us and Apacci.
>>
>>770313
Fuck, forgot to add:

Basically, think of it as a ceremony in which we mixing our blood with Apacci's and declare her as our daughter.

In this respect, we hit pretty much all points associated with Artemis.
>>
>>770319
I'd rather just kill and eat something with her desu

It's not a bonding knife, it's a sacrificial knife

>>
>>770313
That seems reasonable to me, I can't think of anyone we know with a closer thematic connection to Artemis.

Given the confirmation that someone had one of the two figured out already, I'm thinking that the Masu box is meant to be shared with Shunsui, and giving him some shinreiryoku ought to be worth a lot of good will in the future for whatever shenanigans we pull.

You are Kusajishi Riku, and your two new students have begun trading tentative blows with each other in the garden near your home in the Ninth Division. Rukia seems uncertain of Tatsuki's speed and skill at rapid movement techniques, and Tatsuki seems unconvinced of Rukias physical power and technique. And you have to admit that they both have good reason to doubt each other: Rukia's not exactly great at hakuda, and you're not sure you've ever seen Tatsuki use shunpō or anything like it.

“Tatsuki, you need to learn how to move your feet properly,” you declare, watching the girl move about. “Shunpō relies on forcing one's body from resting to peak exertion in as short a period as possible. It would probably shred a human body, but a shinigami of your caliber can handle it.”

“Yes, sensei!” Tatsuki replies, trying to act on your advice. She succeeds... in running headlong into Rukia.

“Be more careful!” Rukia demands loudly. “If you cannot stop your shunpō properly, avoid using it in my direction!”

“You could have stopped her,” Yoruichi observes calmly. “Taken advantage of her mistake. Hands higher, feet further apart, hips lower.”

“Yes, Captain Shihōin!” Rukia replies, trying awkwardly to assume a proper boxer's stance.

Yoruichi sighs. “Other foot forward, Kuchiki.”

This... isn't exactly an auspicious start.

“So what do you think about the knife and the box?” you ask, resting your chin on your palm as you watch the two continue to spar. “How do we go about using them?”

“Well, it seems we did the pipe right,” Yoruichi concludes thoughtfully. “That rat bastard Coyote did us one service in slipping me catnip, since it confirms we did what he expected.”

“Sadly it tells us nothing more about the others aside from the fact that I'm meant to share,” you sigh. Tatsuki cracks Rukia across the eye as Yoruichi considers the point.

“Actually, we don't even really know what happened with the pipe,” your wife admits. “I could try and figure out the answer to that, but I think we both know there are people better suited.”

It's possible it's not meant to be shared at all in this case. Shunsui becoming part divine would definitely be a sticking point between him and the Royal Guard. In that regard, perhaps it isn't much of a gift.

I buy Yoruichi being meant for shinreiyoku, she's our wife. >>770313 I can almost buy this being correct, it hits a lot of points with Artemis but also seems very complicated, more than I'd expect the answer to be.

Hikifune is a preferable person to approach with in unraveling the Masu box. It's right up her alley.

Cuts it close regards to the Monk getting wind of this and taking action though.
>>
Didn't we already talk to one of the Royal Guard about consuming shinreiyoku? It's...probably safe to talk to them about a little more. The only real escalation here is the gods actually making sure some of the stuff gets to us. The Monk may be alarmed by that, I suppose, but it was probably inevitable.

I haven't cast a vote but I'm legit divided here.

On one hand, if Urahara can be trusted, he may be able to come up with unconventional solutions. Maybe even be more open now that this affects Yoruichi too. On the other hand....IF he can be trusted, and if he is more open.

Versus the Royal Guard, who know some of what we're planning, but the Monk is definitely not on our side and we're skirting rather close to him.

A single though is enough to activate your Tenteikura, and through the spell you seek out the reiatsu of Urahara Kisuke where he's... actually taking a break? You knew he had been by earlier to visit your Division to take a sample from BG9, but right now he's neither here nor in his own Division's barracks, and it feels like he's stationary. It's as you try and hone in further on him that you notice it.

“Someone is interfering from the outside,” Tenkotsuki observes in the back of your mind. “It seems that someone is monitoring all communications within the Seireitei through the use of a powerful spell. Remarkable work for a mortal, if a nuisance.”

“Have they noticed us yet?” you ask quietly, catching Yoruichi's attention. “Do they know... well, that we know?”

“I do not believe so. The spell is rather crude in nature, so I was able to notice it easily, but the raw power is remarkable and its scope and audacity are quite frankly surprising.”

“Can you continue avoiding their notice?” you ask.

“Not forever, so you would have to be brief. But I can probably prevent them from actively eavesdropping on any conversation you have.”

Something about her tone makes it seem like that's not her preferred solution... as if the very existence of such a spell is an irritation or a personal affront. “So what would you rather do?”

“I may be able to offer you two alternatives: to either eavesdrop on the eavesdropper, or to offer something of a more sternly-worded rebuke.”

“You mean you wanna jolt them?” you ask, cocking an eyebrow. “You know odds are good that's the Royal Guard, right?”

“The Royal Guard?” Yoruichi asks with a frown. “You mean one of them is trying to monitor private communications in the Seireitei?”

“It's not technically illegal” you sigh, “but I know, it's pretty offensive. Most Captains would be pissed as hell if they knew.”

“I'd say don't fuck around,” Yoruichi suggests, glaring in the direction of Fourth Division.

“On the one hand you have a point, Yoruichi,” you nod sagely. “But on the other hand since when have I ever stopped when it made sense to, and why would I start now?”

“Tenkotsuki, let's see how far we can get.”

Yoruichi rolls her eyes as you hop down off the rock.

“Please use Kakushitsuijaku, my dear Riku,” Tenkotsuki instructs, and you trace a circle in the gravel to comply.

“Heart of the south, eye of the north, finger of the west, foot of the east, arrive with the wind and depart with the rain!”

You see the center of the circle illuminate as images of the terrain between yourself and the Fourth Division flash past. As you had guessed the tracking spell takes your focus straight to the Royal Guard's tower, where Tenkotsuki takes over the process. Within the tower is a series of private rooms, and within one of those rooms sits the pompadoured man who had nearly gotten in a fight with Unohana upon the Royal Guard's sudden arrival. He doesn't seem to notice as Tenkotsuki establishes a clearer view of him.

“I dare not draw any closer,” she informs you at a whisper. “His senses are surprisingly dull for one so skilled, though I should imagine that either my estimation of his proficiency with kidō or his senses was off.”

“What are you doing in here, Kirinji?” an exasperated female voice greets your ears. “I can practically smell that spell from downstairs.”

Kirinji sits cross-legged with his eyes closed, breathing slowly, but opens an eye when Kirio speaks. “I'm checkin' things out. Somethin' doesn't smell right about that Kusajishi character, and I wanna figure out what it is.”

“You know Ichibē wouldn't approve of this,” Kirio sighs.

“An' that's why he don't know.”

So even the two Royal Guard who are 'against' you don't agree on what approach to take? Interesting. Perhaps you can play them off against each other at some point in the future, if it ever comes to that.

“You an' Oetsu, an' even Shutara are all too soft on 'er. She don't give a fuck any more than Aizen did, you know that. What if she up an' decides that she wants to do somethin' really crazy?”

“Good or bad, that ain't in our court Kirio. The rules though, those we can enforce.”

“And she hasn't technically broken a rule yet, unlike Aizen,” Kirio counters. “Unless you really think she wanted to hollowfy the first time?”

“The rules of the Seireitei ain't the rules I'm talkin' about.”

>Help us figure out how to build up our shinreiryoku
Gotta git gud.
>>
>>771103

Hmm. Write-ins...

Perhaps try to convince him that we're reaching the point where we can't hide this anymore. Yes it's trespassing into unknown, divine territory and we're sure Urahara has lots of reasons to be cautious.

On the other hand, if we don't, Aizen will. So we should seek advantage however we can. Even if Urahara doesn't trust us, I think he does trust Yoruichi, so hopefully that will help.

And...hmm.

Someone mentioned earlier that Urahara had a dead god in his sword too? Do we know this? Cause if so, maybe that ceremonial knife was meant for HIM.

It's not impossible that the gods are already aware of what he's done and been doing, and maybe that ceremonial knife is their idea of encouragement for Urahara.

Apacci is still a leading candidate mind, and her getting shinreiyoku may even lead to her being able to consume or undo the curse on Hollows, but one of the gifts being meant to be shared with Urahara does not seem impossible.
>>
>>771103
>Assess what's happened to Yoruichi
>>
>>771103
>Assess what's happened to Yoruichi

Could we also mention that the gods are now supporting us and our growth, in case that makes him feel better?

Or just lead with asking why he's worried about us and this growth. Ask to hear his concerns instead of brazenly stomping in and asking for favors. In fact...leading with asking him to assess Yoruichi, and in his burst of panic asking why he's so worried, may be a good chance to get information out of him.

“Let's move on, shall we? I don't think it does us any good to find more reasons to dislike that big-haired prick.”

Kirinji sneezes loudly just as your focus shifts back to Urahara, and Tenkotsuki does her best to keep the subtle but almost inescapable hand of the Royal Guard from interfering in your private affairs. It almost feels like he panics at the moment your minds make initial contact, but he quickly regains his usual demeanor and casts his own spell to talk back to you. And boy, does that man ever know how to talk.

“I'm sorry, but the number you have reached has been disconnected or is no longer in service...”

“Cut the shit, Kisuke, I... we need your help.”

“Oh?” he replies. “You, needing help from little old me? What could possibly have gone wrong?”

“Yoruichi's ended up with shinreiryoku,” you explain quickly, “and we want to know what exact effect it's had on her before we make our next move.”

“Are you crazy?” he hisses. “One of the Royal Guard is eavesdropping all our conversations!”

“And Tenkotsuki's keeping him in check,” you counter testily. “I know you don't think highly of me, but please try to avoid insulting my zanpakuto's competence.”

“And it would please me,” Tenkotsuki adds, her voice practically seething with annoyance, “if you would avoid taking that tone with my wielder in the future.”

“Why am I surprised,” Kisuke sighs, “of course she can block it...”

“Not indefinitely,” you correct your fellow Captain. “Are you coming here or what?”

There are a few moments of silence on his part. “Kisuke?”

“I'm going to gather a few instruments and meet you there.”

True to his word, you can feel that Kisuke has stopped whatever it was he was doing and is racing towards his lab. In the mean time, Rukia manages to knock Tatsuki back on her heels with a surprisingly strong punch that even seems to stun the shinigami who threw it.

Yoruichi merely laughs. “Hey, you actually threw that one right! Well done, Kuchiki!”

“What did I do differently?” Rukia muses, staring at her own hands as she flexes her fingers. “It felt different somehow.”

“That's because you used hakuda properly,” Yoruichi explains, throwing a punch of her own that knocks Rukia back on her flat ass without even coming remotely close to connecting with her. “You focused your reiatsu at just the right time to amplify the force of your blow far beyond what you'd normally be capable of. It may have been a fluke this time, but at least that proves you can do it, right?”

“I guess so...”

“Now then,” you muse, advancing on Tatsuki, “your shunpō just got a lot more important.”

Over the course of the next hour you keep Tatsuki on a constant defensive in an attempt to force[/] her to use shunpō. You even go to the extreme of binding her arms behind her back with bakudō, ensuring that she can't simply block your punches and has to move her body to escape. Though you clock her several times, and she runs headlong into walls or trees a few times, she eventually manages to perform shunpō just enough times to convince you that the first time wasn't an accident. Rukia on the other hand ends up breaking a finger, as her challenge is to punch Yoruichi without hurting herself. She fails marvelously several times, so that when she finally manages the task you're not sure whether she's actually succeeded or if the nerves in her hands simply stopped working.

It's a few minutes after you finish healing Rukia's fists that Urahara finally arrives.

“Okay, that's enough for today you two,” you tell your students. “Go get something to eat and get some rest. You start again at sunup.”

Tatsuki turns a bleary, exhausted eye to her training partner. “Hey, Kuchiki?”

Rukia only manages an undignified grunt of acknowledgement.

“I'm startin' to think maybe we got it wrong the first time. This Captain of yours... that's who we've really gotta deal with.”

“For our own survival, if for no other reason,” Rukia agrees in a mutinous tone.

That's fine, you think to yourself. Go ahead and bond over it, even if there's nothing else at least you can share that.

“So, somebody requested a house call?” Kisuke inquires, raising the brim of his hat a little. “What seems to be the problem?”

“Well, it may be better if we talk inside,” you suggest, motioning for Kisuke to follow you.

When he sees Tenri he gives her a quizzical look, but keeps any thoughts or insights he might have to himself. “So, what's this all about?”

“I may have held back some information at the Captains' meeting,” you admit quietly, taking a seat behind your desk. Tenri stands attentively behind your right shoulder, while Yoruichi perches herself on the front edge of your desk. “Tenri here brought me presents, from three deities I've met over the years.”

“I see,” Urahara replies thoughtfully, stroking lightly at his chin stubble as he digests the information. “So that's where Yoruichi here got shinreiryoku from, I take it?”

“That's right,” she nods. “Got me high off my ass thought.”

“Almost sad I missed that.”

“It was an experience for everyone involved.”

You sigh. “We're getting off topic. The point is that we were sent a pipe, among other things, and smoking that pipe allowed the two of us to take in a small but not insignificant amount of shinreiryoku.”

“Then I'm glad I brought the appropriate tools,” he chuckles, “because it seems like we're in an interesting situation.”

“May I?”

Yoruichi shrugs, clearly not especially fussed about the prospect. “What do you need?”

“A blood sample,” Kisuke tells her. “Which arm?”

Yoruichi removes one of her armguards and holds out an arm. “Doesn't matter. I can just heal something like that in seconds anyway, you know that.”

“It's just good bedside manner. Any family history I should know about?”

“Bedside manner?” you scoff as Kisuke sticks a needle in your wife's arm. “You? First sign of the apocalypse.”

“I've always been polite when examining a lady. Have you been getting enough exercise lately, Miss Shihōin?”

This time it's Yoruichi's turn to scoff. “You're an asshole, Kisuke. No need to lie to yourself over it. Just own it.”

“You're the patient,” Kisuke replies with a cocked eyebrow. “You should try and be more cooperative with your physician. So, have you been sexually active within the last six months?”

“Are you fishing for a black eye?”

After collecting the blood he needs, Urahara produces a small device that he places over the end of the syringe. It emits a low set of rhythmic beeps for what feels like an hour but can't have been more than sixty seconds, then produces a higher tone like a microwave oven's ready alarm.

“So it seems there are no irregularities,” Kisuke announces, looking at a series of lights on his mysterious little device. How it works and how he can say that, you have no idea. “Aside from a relatively small proportion of shinreiryoku, no more than three percent of her total. At this level, it seems unlikely to have too strong of an effect in combat.”

“So you're telling me that 'gift' wasn't enough on its own,” Yoruichi ponders the point. “So was it meant to be inspiration? Or to set us on the right track?”

“Then why would they send us three such objects?” Tenkotsuki asks you.

“Perhaps there are two other people they want us to start on this path,” you suggest. “But who?”

“There's no significance to the pipe itself,” Yoruichi points out. “The catnip may have been there as a hint, but there's no such thing for the other two.”

“Maybe something more intrinsic?” Kisuke suggests. “What it is rather than what it does?”

“Or perhaps it's not meant that way at all,” you counter. “Maybe they mean for us to use all three together rather than sharing each between a different pair of people.”

“Well, the masu's probably meant to be drunk out of,” Kisuke tells you. “You reckon, Yoruichi?”

Your wife frowns. “Inari's more associated with rice rather than sake, isn't she?”

“Your wife has a point,” Tenkotsuki admits. “It does seem mother has been rather vague about this detail.”

“Tenkotsuki's just as divided,” you inform the group.

For a while you sit in silent thought, before Kisuke speaks up. “What if either way would work? Is it possible each method might have a slightly different effect?”

Tenkotsuki seems somewhat intrigued by the possibility. “I see no reason why that could not be the case.”

“But who am I meant to share it with?”

“I would assume Yoruichi,” Kisuke tells you. “Who else would Inari Ōkami want you to share this gift with?”

Actually... he does have a point. Though you have a few ideas who might be thematically appropriate for each situation, you can't come up with a reason for Inari to want you to share with any of them.

>Try drinking good sake out of the masu.
>Try measuring a portion of rice with the masu, then share it.

I have to agree, who else would Inari WANT us to share with? Yoruichi is at the top of the list by a longshot.
Maybe we're supposed to take some good rice, measure it out in the Masu, and then turn the rice into sake to be drunk out of the masu?

If we can only do one, I'd be most confident about drinking sake out of it.

9 months to a year for sake to fully mature to a point where it's ready to be drunk. I don't think we have the time unless we purposefully go back in time via dangai and stash it somewhere safe.

>>

>writing

*light bulb*

I think I know why the masu may be meant for Shunsui. And the answer is pure politics.

Shunsui is now Captain-Commander. Right now the Royal Guard just has a problem with Riku, a Captain. This expands their problem to the leader of the Gotei 13. And with the Gotei 13 as precarious as it is, in the wake of Yamamoto's death, the Royal Guard cannot afford to start a civil war in Sereitei by antagonizing Shunsui.

Thus they have to let it lie for now. Especially if it becomes public. And the longer they let it lie, the more legitimate it becomes over the passage of time. Assuming we win, we're all decorated war heroes riding on good PR, and the Royal Guard will look like heels for continuing to target us and the beloved Captain-Commander.

If this is Inari's intent, that is fucking genius.
>>
>>771899
Ah, of course, Ice boy. Because the only thing he is good at is letting his ice melt so people can have nice cold drinks in combat.

I'm pretty sure the RG don't actually give a shit what SS at large thinks of them. Since for the most part none of them can get into the Soul King's palace. Even more so they have bigger responsibilities. Add to that the fact that they are incredibly powerful means that they don't have to fear reprisal as much, with only a few captains currently being viable threats.

Even if the entirety of SS hated them and refused to cooperate with them it means nothing since they can just fuck off and do their duty in the palace without any outside help.

“What about the knife then?” you press. “Aside from who I end up drinking or eating with, how does the knife actually work?”

“It's a sacrificial knife in all likelihood,” Yoruichi repeats her previous assertion. “That's the only thing that makes sense to me.”

“I have to agree,” Kisuke nods, “and in all likelihood, I believe the victim should be a hollow.”

“And what scientific process led you to that conclusion” you ask with a glare.

“What do we shinigami always end up fighting and killing, Captain Kusajishi? Our place in the world is to fight hollows.”

“Perhaps the point is to hunt a hollow specifically for the purpose?” Yoruichi offers, her amber eyes meeting yours. You can tell that she feels similarly conflicted at the whole situation. “Artemis is the goddess of the hunt after all.”

“That could mean Miss Apacci or Miss Halibel,” Kisuke muses.

“Or, again,” you counter, growing increasingly frustrated, “it could mean Yoruichi by the same thought process. She's got an 'inner hollow', and the predatory instincts that go with it. She even hunts as a hobby, Kisuke. She's literally a hunter. She keeps hawks and wears funny clothes and everything.”

Pick ONE and only ONE:
>Approach your arrancar allies with the idea.
>Go to Hueco Mundo with Yoruichi, hunt down a menos or an arrancar.
>Drink some sake.
>Eat some rice.
>Don't do any of those things.

You glance down at the masu on your desk then sigh in resignation. “Tenri, please do me a favor.”

“Ma'am?”

“There's a bottle of sake in the cabinet on the other side of the room,” you instruct. “Please bring it here.”

Tenri begins to do as you requested, but stops after opening the cabinet. “Ma'am, I think 'a' bottle somewhat misrepresents the situation.”

Kisuke lets out a low whistle as he looks over Tenri's shoulder. “That's quite the collection.”

“Most of those are awamori or whiskey,” you correct them, laying your forehead down on the desk in front of you. “The only one that's actual sake is the one with the sediment in it.”

The masu is placed on the table in the middle of the room, and you and Yoruichi sit opposite each other in preparation to drink from it. Tenri eventually locates the lone bottle of unfiltered sake in your booze cabinet and pours out enough to fill the container right to the edge. It seems she knows how to pour sake properly, as if she's received actual etiquette training on matters like this. You'll have to ask her some time what she did before being sent here.

Grasping the masu gently between your hands, you take the first tentative sip. Rice and mineral flavors roll across your tongue, with a faint trace of something vaguely resinous: possibly a slight change because of the container itself. You continue drinking until you feel the shinreiryoku drain from the vessel, and only stop when Tenkotsuki tells you it's just shy of half gone. You then pass it gingerly across the table to Yoruichi, who sips cautiously from the opposite side until the sake – and reiryoku – are gone.

“To think it's that simple,” Kisuke muses, his tone surprisingly worried. “Not sure how I feel about it.”

“That's your own business,” you reassure him. “Honestly, I'm a little surprised myself how easily this whole thing seems to be going.”

“I didn't even get high this time,” Yoruichi observes almost dejectedly. “The word I'm looking for is.... boring. Tenkotsuki, your mother is boring.”

“Perhaps not,” Tenkotsuki's voice replies aloud, immediately getting your wife and her old friend's attention. “It feels almost as though this shinreiryoku has maintained some of its own unique character.”

“Wait, like how your own nullifies reiatsu?” Yoruichi asks, cocking her head in confusion. “Then what does this stuff do?”

“I cannot say for sure.”

Well... what the fuck else are we supposed to do with it, if not kill a hollow?

I don't know, this is just really frustrating that the QM clearly feels like he's beating us over the heads with the right answer but I don't think we've put it together yet.
>>
>>772609
We already spoke to them about this kind of thing before. Halibel, anyway. Evil assholes and mindless murderbeasts are fine to kill, hollow or not.

>>772621
How is that relevant? We hunt something to capture it, then we use the knife to sacrifice it.
>>
>>772621

The goal isn't to kill the Hollow in combat so much as capture it, and then ritualistically finish it off.

>>772643

To be fair, the Hollows may have their own ideas.

>>772651

I do remember the conversation, but they may have changed their minds in the...decades? Centuries? Since we spoke.

Something about this plan really doesn't sit right with you, and so you rely on Tenteikura yet again to call Halibel in to your office. Since she's close by anyway it only takes a few minutes, and when she arrives you gesture for her to sit. You can never really be sure with her, but it seems she's puzzled as to why you've asked her to be here.

You explain the situation to her: you need to get the shinreiryoku out of this knife, but in order to do that previous experience suggests that you need to sacrifice something to it. In all likelihood that sacrifice needs to be a hollow, and given the fact that there are actually hollows you've come to care about you wanted her opinion on the morality of the situation. Get her perspective on what needs to be done, how it needs to be done, or whether it can even be done in a moral fashion at all. As important as this is in the long run you have your own doubts about how it seems to have to be done.

“So this blade wants hollow blood?” she asks after you finish your question.

“That's about the size of it,” your wife sighs, falling back onto the floor. “Fucking gods. Why can't they ever do things like normal people? This is getting ridiculous.”

“They literally can't,” you frown, taking up the knife in your hand and glaring at it. “Something about it being for our own protection.”

“I see,” Halibel replies, reaching out with her hand and grasping the knife by its blade. With a sharp pull and a spurt of blood, she cuts open her palm and fingers on its edges: shinreiryoku immediately flows from the blade into your hand, and oddly enough into hers as well. Yoruichi sits up, alarmed at the sudden sound of flesh being sliced and the smell of blood being spilled.

You look at Halibel in mild shock, only to find that same, impassive expression she normally wears.

“There,” she declares sternly, “a hollow bled. The condition is satisfied, and you are spared any moral quandaries by taking an unwilling sacrifice.”

“Did she just...” Urahara asks, his voice trailing off abruptly.

Yoruichi nods to herself. “Yeah, I think she just did. You were wrong, Urahara, and I was right: it had nothing to do with hunting after all.”

“What are you talking about?” Halibel asks, before her eyes widen in panic as she finally realizes the sensation of her own new reserve of shinreiryoku. It's fairly small, but like Yoruichi's it's noticeable: she seems to have definitely gotten the better part of the bargain from this last item.

You cradle your head in your hands. “I'm definitely getting in trouble for this, aren't I?”
>>
>>773040
Well boyos, we just created something akin to a holy abomination. A hollow that has shinreiryoku.
>>
>>773040

>>
>>773061
As I said explicitly at least once, not only were there multiple possibilities for each none of them were particularly obscure or difficult to come up with: in this case because the nature and definition of "a sacrifice" is so vague. It can be a kill, it can be a votive, it can be a proxy made of straw, and those are all just in Roman antiquity. Artemis understood that much and so almost any form of sacrifice would have done something, it's just a question of what the effects of whatever ended up happening would be. Same as how the masu would have done something basically no matter what you consumed from it or who you consumed it with.

But eventually I had to just go with something, because I realized that I was never going to get anything approaching a single coherent answer: even this last vote was a tie between talking it over with Halibel and going straight out for a hunt, so what I decided on was halfway between. Explain to Halibel what the dagger was, how everyone thought it worked at the time, and what the general problem seemed to be with just going out at doing it. From there Halibel's response was simple as shit for me to figure out.
>>
>>773120

Did we at least figure out the way Inari intended us to use the Masu?
>>
Well, this isn't at all how I would've preferred for things to work out, but somehow I'm still satisfied.
Not sure how you managed that, Queen. But good job.
>>
>>773120
Except even if we got something from the masu box, the actual scene was really fucking boring because we didn't roll well enough.

So it's not a hard conclusion to make that even if there's multiple "right" answers, there's really only one "actually right" way to do things, and everything else is just "good enough"
>>
And that, Romans and countrymen, is it for the weekend. I have no idea what I'm doing next weekend or even where I'll be, but I'll try and do an omake or two in the next few days. Keep an eye on twitter and check in this thread every so often to see what's going on.

>>
>>774088
I think it's more that of frustration with Ichigo and her dogged determination to keep up with him. And the feeling is mutual from both ends. Tatsuki is frustrated that Berryboy is doing the whole suffering just to protect her while Ichigo is frustrated that Tatsuki refuses to 'stay in the kitchen' for her own safety; hence the whole fight when Riku made the proposal to try out a technique to turn Tatsuki into a Shimigami.
>>
>>774133
that, and then this competing with Rukia isn't going to help just take Orihime's advice and both fuck him.
>>
>>774148
Clearly Berry boy needs to be a better (ex)boyfriend. Both Tatsuki and Ichigo are practically in the same boat, why don't they spend some time together and reconcile for fucks sake? You can practically sense that Tatsuki is clearly undergoing Riku's Training Regimen out of her love for him.
>>
>>773536
do female shimigami and (female gendered) Hollows/Arrancar who physically look young still deal with monthly PMS?
>>
>>774554
Now there's an idea. Maybe Yoru could go fetch him and hide him from view while he watches Riku instruct them in the more brutal parts of their training.

Dense the boy is, but fighting and training he does understand. And even if he still doesn't get it, we can spell it out for him.
>>
>>774640
Short answer is no.

Long answer is that shinigami and arrancar physiology is regulated spiritually rather than chemically: fewer "moving parts" as it were, fewer things that can go badly wrong, and they're much less prone to any rapid shifts in their physical or mental well-being including those that would normally be caused by hormones. The also age more slowly because reaching one's spiritual prime tends to keep one in their physical prime by extension.
>>
>>775085
The problem, though, is if Ichigo does the stupid thing of starting a relationship with Rukia, restart his one with Tatsuki, or spurning them both, they could be even worse in fights due to getting emotional. So that could backfire unless he keeps his feelings pent up or goes the poly route. Which would certainly be an interesting thing
>>
>>775127
bottom line that Aunty Riku and Yoruichi have no say whatsoever and no right to manipulate the love triangle, they're spectators to the drama. At best they can provide counseling in attempt to guide them to reconcile their differences and feelings. But ultimately it's up to Tatsuki, Rukia and Ichigo to make the decision/move on whether or not to reconcile.
>>
>>775137
>>775127
While I agree Riku and Yoru have no right to make any choices on their behalf, I think it's right that they can at least provide the three with all the facts.

To be clear, I'm not advocating influencing Ichigo to make a choice, or even to make one right now. Rather, I'm advocating making sure he has the ability to make an INFORMED choice.
>>
>>775157
Well we did give Rukia and Tatsuki the information of how Ichigo thinks of their wellbeing, and they are making the informed decision of signing up for Riku and Yoruichi's training after Riku chewing them out on letting the Berrybowl get to their heads, now the hard part is giving Ichigo the information through his thick skull without having to bash it over his head and make it look like he doesn't have a choice. Speaking of thick skulls, why don't we bring up the topic with our adoptive brother Isshin? He's the one our nephew takes after the most in terms of thick-headedness and the whole martyr responsibility-suffering for the sake of their protection thing. He's probably got the best idea in terms of dating advice/counseling. Come to think of it, I've never seen Ichigo and Isshin have a father-son moment post-reveal of the family heritage thing. I kinda want an omake of that, or something close to Ichigo having some help from another shimigami in sorting through his feelings on Riku's choice of getting his friends involved in the matter. SSQ Ichigo right now is in a complicated spot now that he's in a more supporting role with more time on his hands to think about himself and his friends in the shimigami world rather than being the main protagonist everyone depends on to save the day.
>>
There will be an Omake this afternoon/evening, something light-hearted and Halloweenish. A more serious one will come later in the week.
>>
>>775458
Will it involve spooky scary skeletons?
>>
>>775466
Only if you count the ones we get every year on Halloween. Although I dunno, Riku may get to turn someone into a skeleton.

How horrifying.
>>
>>775283
Yeah, that combined with the fact that his mother actually got to raise him means he should be at least slightly more emotionally mature.
Y'know, for a teenage shounen protagonist.

But honestly, Ichigo isn't stupid per say, he's just dense. Information doesn't penetrate easily, but once it does, he uses it well. I think if we show him how their training, and explain things as openly as possible, he'll get it.

Then it's just a matter of making a decision that from his perspective is utterly impossible! That, I expect, will take time.

But... Riku is supposed to be thorough and cautious and -smart-. Since she only has one shot at this, it makes sense to try and figure out how best to use it instead of just the first thing that pops into her head.

And no matter how much you try to say that anything would have worked, the fact that the pipe was laced with catnip means that there was still a "best" way of doing things, at least from a storytelling perspective. Are you going to tell me that just stabbing a scarecrow would have been nearly as interesting as what you wound up writing? Hell, the fact that you wrote that in defiance of the dice seems to mean that what rolling a crit actually accomplished was an int check to figure out the ideal way of using the artifact.

- HALLOWEEN OMAKE -
You are Kurosaki Ichigo, and this is not your zanpakuto.

Zangetsu's always been at least vaguely Japanese in his shape and finish, but now he's just a stereotypical cruciform sword like what a knight would be carrying. Like a knight in... shining... oh. Oh fucking hell no!

“Why am I wearing armor!?” you groan loudly, taking in your own iron-shod arms, your armored boots, and the weight of your breastplate against your shoulders. “What the hell is even going on!?”

“You're being too noisy!” Ishida complains at a stage whisper... wait, Ishida? Since when has he been here... and why is he wearing that ridiculous outfit? Even by his standards, dressing like Robin Hood is a little weird. “Seriously, we can't take you anywhere!”

“And you have a feather in your cap,” you point out. “That just doesn't make sense.”

“You mean this feather? I've always had this, Ichigo,” Ishida insists quietly, adjusting his feather the same way he keeps adjusting his glasses... which he's not wearing for some reason. Can he even see without them?

“Are you okay?” Tatsuki asks you, lifting your chin and staring you in the eyes with a look of concern. Why is she dressed in Shaolin robes?

“You're not acting like yourself,” Chad agrees. His typical aloha shirt has been replaced by some sort of dark, close-fitting robes that look about two sizes too small for his massive frame.

“Like I said, none of this is making any... hang on, am I dreaming?”

“This is why I told you to wear your helmet, numbskull,” Tatsuki sighs dramatically, pointing at a gloomy-looking hilltop castle in the distance with dozens of pointy towers and turrets. “Okay, so your brains are a bit scrambled. I'll get you caught back up: we were on our way to sneak into the castle to save Princess Rukia from the Mad King Aizen. But we were ambushed by orcs, one of them cracked you over the head with a club, and now we've lost Yoruichi.”

Okay, so this is literally just the raid on the Seireitei but a weird dream? Okay, you can handle that. If you just retrace your steps you'll wake up, right?

“Alright,” you sigh, sheathing your sword. “I guess I'll play along and help you rescue Rukia.”

Princess Rukia,” Tatsuki corrects you.

“Whatever. Let's just get to the gate already.

After running for what feels like seconds, you spy Jidanbō standing at a massive wrought-iron gate set in an equally massive brick wall. The whole thing is overgrown with ivy and looks ancient, while the gatekeeper himself is dressed differently: instead of a black robe he's wearing a collection of browns and earthy grays, and sports a bushy beard and eyebrows.

“Fi fie fo fum, I'm gonna... beat.. yer... bum?” the giant begins, seeming to confuse himself towards the end of his own challenge.

While your companions all react in theatrical terror, all you can do is stare slack-jawed at the stupidity of the display.

“What happened to your axes, Jidanbō?” you ask, pointing at the giant gatekeeper.

The man sniffles, clearly upset about something. “The Professors confiscated them... said I caused too much collateral damage. Snapped 'em right in front of me and everything!”

“Now that's just sad,” a familiar voice greets you as Riku approaches from the other side of the gate. Instead of her Captain's uniform she's wearing red hakama, like a miko, with a white robe over them with wide sleeves and a deep hood. At her waist is a small, wooden wand, and Yoruichi peers over her left shoulder in cat form. Under her arm, she carries a wooden broomstick... a bizarre mix of pop culture references going on in this dream. “Even in a dream the guy can't catch a break.”

“Wait, you know this is a dream too?” you realize, letting your hand fall away from the hilt of your sword where it's been resting. “Oh thank god, I thought I was the only one!”

“Yes,” Yoruichi's unusually deep voice agrees, “but the real question is who's the dreamer?”

“You're here too?”

“Apparently I'm 'Professor' Kusajishi's familiar,” Yoruichi explains thoughtfully. “A black cat for a witch... of some sort. Apparently whoever's dream this is can't keep their Miyazaki straight from their Rowling.”

“Not to mention last I checked Orthanc wasn't even in Scotland,” Riku observes, indicating that indeed one of the towers of the castle on the hill behind her seems to match the movie version of Saruman's tower. “It's gotta be your dream, Ichigo, I'd never mix up my JRR and my JK...”

“Begone, foul witch!” Ishida shouts as he nocks an arrow and lets it fly in one smooth motion, which she deflects with an effortless sweep of her broomstick.

“Rude,” she frowns as Ishida's face goes pale enough to match his outfit. “Like I was gonna say, I guess we need to rescue Rukia from that abomination of a castle to wake up, so let's get it over with.”

“I am the keeper of the gates!” Jidanbō bellows. “Even with no axes I can't let you bumpkins pass!”

You ready yourself for a fight, but Riku acts first and smacks the giant over the head with her broomstick... only for it to shatter into a thousand pieces. Both fighters simply stare at the splinters and errant straws as they settle onto the dirt.

“That was a regular broomstick,” Yoruichi observes.

“I see that.”

With a silly series of flourishes Riku draws her wand and waves it around, almost as if she's trying to get it to do something by random chance.

“Did you even read the books?” Yoruichi asks, growing tired of the display.

Riku scowls, continuing to wave her wand ineffectually as the gatekeeper watches in disbelief. “Did you?”

“No.”

“Then quit backseat spellcasting already and punch him in the throat or something!”

Not needing to be told twice Yoruichi leaps into action, landing in the middle of Jidanbō's face with her claws out and bowling the giant gatekeeper over. In a black blur she returns to Riku's hood where she'd been perched before just as Riku finishes her spell.

“Now this is how a real pop-culture wizard gets shit done!”

Raising her arms slowly as if conducting a great invisible symphony through a crescendo, Riku releases a wave of reiatsu that washes over the whole area. At first nothing happens... then the shards of wood and straw quiver in time to an unseen pulse. Then again. And again. Each splinter raises itself up and expands, each straw multiplies and regenerates a shaft. Rank upon rank of wooden broomsticks rise up from the dust and come to life like a barely-sentient army of floorcare products... then set to work whacking the gatekeeper all over as he tries to get up off the ground.

Completely overwhelmed by a sea of handles and brushy heads, Jidanbō is left to frantically cover his head with his arms and shout.

“Leg it!” Riku shouts, waving you all in through the gate.

“That was close,” you sigh after getting well clear of the gate, turning only to find Yoruichi hanging over Riku's shoulders... this time very much human, and very nude.

“Yoruichi!” you shout in alarm covering your face with your hands. “Come on, this isn't even that kind of dream!”

“Fine,” you hear her still-feminine voice reply before being replaced by her deeper feline tone. “I figured I might be more useful with opposable thumbs, but if you're that much of a prude I suppose I have no other choice.”

“Are you two done arguing?” Tatsuki asks loudly. “Because we've still got a Princess to save... and don't think we trust you just because you helped us once, Professor.”

“Okay, so nobody's going to ask why Aizen kidnapped a princess and took her to a wizarding school?” Riku demands. “Seriously, that doesn't even make any goddamn sense!”

“Just roll with it,” you sigh, scratching the back of your neck where the edge of your armor rubs against it uncomfortably. “Gets us out of here quicker that way.”

“Fine...”

“Halt, intruders!” you hear a loud voice interrupt you.

“It's Professor Kuchiki!” Ishida grumbles. “We've been found out!”

True enough, Byakuya stands before you in a set of black robes and a pointy hat. Next to him however is another figure who worries you even more.

“Okay, so what are you even doing at a magic school, Kenpachi?” you demand. “I gotta agree with Riku on this one, this is ridiculous!”

“I can do magic too!” Kenpachi, whose hair has been styled into a single upward cone of black to mimic a pointed hat, protests.

“Oh yeah, what spells can you cast?” you counter. “Name one!”

With an explosive burst of speed, Kenpachi cracks you across the chin with his wand and sends you flying through a nearby wall. “See! That was a spell!”

“You just hit that boy with your wand,” Byakuya observes calmly from outside the building you've crashed into. “That isn't how you do it.”

“Well it fuckin' felt like magic to me!”

You groan, drawing your sword and stepping back out from the rubble and dust.

“You know, Byakuya, I could waste a bunch of time fighting you,” Riku sighs, but I have a better idea.

“And that is?”

“Cat.”

“Cat?”

With an angry battle-yowl Yoruichi springs from Riku's hood and latches onto Byakuya's face, and he goes down in a comical heap trying frantically to pry her loose.

“Go!” Riku shouts as she literally crosses wands with Kenpachi as if they were tiny, ridiculous wooden swords. “Your friends have already run towards the castle... tower... thing. Go finish this bullshit so we can wake up!”

“HELL YES!” Kenpachi roars in delight, swinging the tiny little wand around with such force that each swing whips at Riku's robes. “IT MAY NOT BE A REAL FIGHT BUT I'LL FUCKIN TAKE IT!”

You set off running, only to find that Komamura has blocked your path. Chad goes sliding across the ground as the giant dog-headed Captain shrugs off one of Ishida's arrows and blocks one of Tatsuki's punches at the same time... they can't stand up to him like this, not with comically weak attacks like this. Really, those arrows Ishida's shooting may as well have suction cups for tips!

“I, Professor Komamura Sajin, tire of you interlopers,” Komamura growls, drawing his wand and casting a bolt of bright red light straight up into the air. “I summon thee, Tenken!”

From high above, something slams into the ground behind Komamura like a meteor descending to earth, raising a thick pall of dust. A silhouette slowly emerges, two glowing green eyes set in the middle of its head... and the dust parts to reveal something altogether unexpected.

“Tenken! Show them true JUSTICE!” you can hear Komamura shout... apparently from inside the giant armored figure. “Go! GO! GOOO!”

In the distance you hear Riku unleash a scream... of pure, unashamed and childlike joy.

“It's like an actual GUNDAM!” she practically squeals at the top of her lungs. “Fuck off Kenny, I've wanted this shit for a century, let me enjoy the fucking moment!”

“Okay, that's it!” you shout, “If Tenken is a fucking robot now, good thing I'm a teen with magical powers, I got this shit!”

With a leap you get as close to Tenken's “cockpit” as you can and hurl your sword at it, and in some bizarre sort of dream logic the blade lodges itself deep in the machine's chest and knocks it clean off its feet. Apparently your own subconscious mind must have bought that argument, because Tenken doesn't get up.

“No!” Komamura roars from inside his Bankai. “How could one teenager with special powers take down my Tenken!?”

Genre savviness is a real bitch, you think as you keep running up the hill towards the tower.

“This is your fault!” Renji shouts at you, now dressed in black robes over a school uniform. Except now his tattoos take the shape of a lightning bolt on his forehead, and he's wearing round coke-bottle glasses. “Zabimaruius!”

With a shout he waves his wand at you, producing a red blast of reiatsu which you narrowly dodge.

“No time, dream Renji!” you shout over your shoulder, before bumping into someone's chest. Hard as rocks... oh.

It's the Head Captain, dressed in some sort of gray robes with a large hat that suits his long beard. Next to him stands that short Captain the woman who apparently used to serve under Yoruichi and now commands Fifth Division you think. Her robes are a deep green. “Young man... you have been causing a lot of trouble on the grounds. I would have you explain yourself immediately.”

“I can explain, Headmaster,” Riku interrupts, having apparently managed to get past her fellow Captains. “It's Cap... I mean, it's Aizen. He's kidnapped... um, Kuchiki Rukia? Also, it's good to see you again sir... even if this is a dream.”

“You mean the princess?” the woman asks.

“Um... yes?”

“Then you may proceed, Professor Kusajishi.”

“YES!” you shout triumphantly. For once in this bizarre dream things seem to be going well for you.

And then Aizen nearly brings the entire castle down on your head.
>5/?
>>
>>775822
He's dressed as some sort of warlock, with his glasses once more on his face and black robes, and he drifts lightly to the ground with a rush of wind that emanates from the spot where he lands.

“How kind of you to join me, Professor Kusajishi. But it's already too late, the ritual has already begun.”

Riku however seems to be planning something already, seeming to speak to Yoruichi as she sits in her hood. “So if this is your dream, I wonder if I can dust that old trick off?”

“He's doing the villain monologue thing,” Yoruichi observes slyly as Aizen continues to explain about some bullshit plans of his. “Let's go.”

Riku vaults hundreds of feet into the air straight above Aizen, producing a series of paper strips from her sleeves and throwing them like daggers where they stick into the ground around Aizen's feet. “Heizen Kreuzung!”

Five columns of silvery light crash all around Aizen, battering him from above and cracking the foundations of the castle below your feet, but you can tell Aizen survived even before Riku lands. With a cry you strike out yourself, making contact with your blade as you pass through the dust. As it clears you can see Aizen still standing, battered and singed but alive. As for Riku, she too is looking rather beaten herself.

“You've failed, Professor,” Aizen taunts as black stormclouds gather high above, crackling with lighting. “I took your greatest technique and this is all it was good for!”

Riku for her part simply smirks, a look of pure confidence in her eyes. Like she's already won.

“Isn't there something missing from this picture, smartass? I didn't jump that high just for show...”

Aizen looks up in time to see Yoruichi crashing down from the heavens after springing off Riku's back mid-leap, her feline body a luminous blur as it slams into him in a massive column of lightning and claws. Only then, as he grasps his wand, does he realize why your attack didn't leave a mark on him.

His wand has been sliced in two, rendered utterly useless in the face of Yoruichi's barrage. One last shout is all he manages, and you can't be sure he even realized fully what happened to him before he's obliterated.

After freeing Rukia from the tower, you stand around with your friends.

“Well, we saved the princess,” Tatsuki grumbles. “Happy now?”

“I told you not to come here, idiot... but thank you nonetheless.”

“Yeah,” you smile. “Kinda reminds me of when we did this for real. Feels nostalgic in a way even if it's just a dream... think I missed the sense of camaraderie more than I realized.”

“I think I can finally wake up now...”

With a start and a shout, Aizen awakes from a troubled sleep. “Bad kitty!”

Looking around in a moment of disorientation he finds that he's still in his personal quarters, hidden safely within the shadowy realm of Silbern. He examines his hands, flexing and stretching his fingers to satisfy himself that this is indeed real, and rises from his bed. Across the room is a small sealed can of tea leaves, which he opens and sniffs curiously.

“Is this...” he mutters with a frown, crushing the can in his grip. “Gin, you fiendish bastard! How dare you spike my tea leaves, is nothing sacred to you?"

I actually sympathize with the Royal Guard. Riku and her allies have put her friends and family into positions of power, with Riku herself as the lynchpin. They are all ruthless in one way or another, they train high schoolers, sometimes to terrifying effect, and Riku's commandos and her hollows make up a huge, huge amount of the talent in all of Seireitei.

Sure, we know Riku's heart is in the right place, but from the outside? The only thing that's absolutely certain is that if Riku went rogue, it would probably be far more devastating for the G13 than when Aizen did the same. And that's not even mentioning the fact that the most important reason people let Riku operate the way she does is the potential damage it would cause if they didn't. And then, on top of that, Riku deals with divine powers most people won't ever understand, including herself.

To sum: Riku's forces are a terrifying, semi-rogue faction within the Seireitei who use their overwhelming power as leverage to get their way, engage in potentially catastrophic scientific and divine practices, hoard all the powerful individuals they can grab onto, regardless of their factions, all because they think their ways are superior to those of the existing establishment.

If anything, I'm suprised the existing establishment didn't come for our heads like decades ago.
>>
>>776817
Because they know that if they tried anything they'd have a proper civil war on their hands that not many would want to fight leaving the C46 with their balls in the wind.
>>
>>776886
>tfw if they had intervened long ago before Aizen was confirmed absolute dickbag he may have been able to get Riku in on his rebellion and they'd have rekt the SS

Then killed each other, of course.
>>
>>776817
Well... There are several big reasons why Riku's head isn't on a platter decades ago"
We did come clean with our intentions by timing the reveal to coincide with Aizen's Betrayal, with our backstory essentially setting him up as the heel that Riku's forces were created to oppose while serving as a pre-established line of defense for the G13 and C-46 against Aizen as well as external forces.
Also our choice to go look for Yoruichi when we got infected which led to Riku and Yoruichi being able to contain the Hollow virus in secret with some lucky dice rolls gave Riku and Yoruichi the bonus of staying within Seireitei when most circumstances would lead them to be exiled like the Vizards, Staying within Seireitei gave Riku the bonus of a better position to "come clean from the conspiracy" while dropping hints to our co-workers that Aizen's up to no good. If Riku was an exile the situation would've been so much different.
Finally, Riku was already on the Royal Guard's watchlist the moment she was able to talk with Tenkotsuki, they've made visits prior to their tower-crashing entrance after Yamamoto's death, so Riku's already established a relationship with the more lenient and affable members of the Guard (Oetsu & Hikifune) and appeases them by remaining a 'technically' law-abiding Shimigami.

Sure the Outside Perspective has justifiable doubts about Riku's loyalties and her sketchy motives and activities which technically isn't illegal, but all it takes for them to appreciate the existence of Riku and the 9th is by looking at the history of 9th division since the beginning of Riku's Captaincy and re-imagining the same Human/Shimigami conflicts and events minus the involvement of Riku and the 9th. Remember the Rukongai purges the G13 used to commit whenever an imbalance happened? Riku's proposal of going to ghost mexico and purging menos instead of Rukongai citizens alleviated much of the need to do a Rukongai purge whenever a massive imbalance happened. World War 1 and 2? Riku's 9th was the first to volunteer and head to the frontlines. That initial Scouting force Aizen sent out? Practically contained by Riku's 9th (and allies) with a bonus of POWs and enemy intel!

"Come on Mei, it's just one drink." Shunsui complained, reaching for a beautifully simple glass bottle full of an amber liquid.
"Absolutely not! Head Captain, you're supposed to be setting an example!" his assistant protested, snatching the bottle up and away from him as far as she could reach without falling over. Nanao's replacement was one of the few women in Soul Society who could really stand Shunsui for prolonged periods of time, and was explicitly appointed to the position by Nanao, to his own protests.
"You don't understand, this isn't just the normal boring paperwork." He sighed, "These are all the official complaints about Captain Kushajishi that have been pushed off for decades. Maybe centuries."
Mei narrowed her eyes at him disbelieving, "I know she has a reputation, but they can't all be worse than the reconstruction forms, or the 46's regulatory drafts, or th-" she was interrupted by a piece of paper being thrust in her face.

[Byakuya Kuchiki; November 23rd]
I had commissioned an article of clothing on the 21st to be delivered to my residence upon completion. Instead what arrived was a pair of unwashed feminine undergarments at the precise moment several members of my household arrived unannounced for a meeting I did not call. I suspect Captain Riku responsible for this, as she had the same type of fabric I had commissioned wrapped about her chest underneath her robes that same day.

well given the fact that Ichigo deeply cares about Rukia and Tatsuki as well as his friends, he'll be likely come running to Riku demanding why Tatsuki and Rukia look half-dead and about to keel over the moment he notices them at lunch. However the biggest problem is that Ichigo is more stubbornly selfish and he's not really that considerate of the feelings of his friends, more often than not distancing himself from them for his selfish desire to keep them safe. In a sense he's much like Neliel, having a sense to shoulder the burden without consideration of those she wants to protect.

As for in terms of how easily the information will get through his thick skull, I think it's better for Tatsuki and Rukia explain themselves why they've signed up under their own volition rather than Aunty Riku spoonfeed the truth to the spoiled brat.
>>
>>778385
I'm worried that if Tatsuki and Rukia try to give him the truth though, they'll push him to make a decision immediately.
>>
>>778409
makes sense in that perspective. All that RukiaxIchigo teasing we pulled on Ichigo has consequences that's happening now in the Berry bowl. Having the girls tell the brat the truth makes it sound more like two love confessions delivered at the same time for the hormone addled teen rather than a sage adult explaining to him the impact on his stubborn selfishness and admonishing him to be more considerate of his friends feelings. We can even use Neliel's situation as an example to show how selfishness without consideration of others would have consequences.

On the one hand, I really hope Rukia winds up with Ichigo, so I want to push for that

- OMAKE PART II -
Deep within the secured chambers of the Central 46, Kyōraku Shunsui sighs deeply. Despite the fact that so much of the Seireitei is militarized, being run politically by a feudal aristocracy and administrated in all practical senses by a stratocracy, this place feels much more like an actual fortress than anywhere else in the Soul Society. Outside these walls the authority of the Gotei 13 is so widely accepted and deeply integrated that the defensive towers and walls are basically the norm rather than a prominent feature in the landscape. It's only where access is so restricted by layer upon layer of walls, guard posts, and security gates that such measures even register: and it tends to make visitors uncomfortable, even Captains.

His assistant, Lieutenant Ise, glances at him in concern as they approach the main audience hall. “Something the matter, Captain?”

Shunsui's hand strays upward for a moment before realizing that he's not wearing his usual trademark hat, then reaches instead for his eyepatch to scratch at where it covers his brow. “I don't like being down here, you know. Always feels like you're on trial.”

“How so?” Nanao asks.

“You'll see in a few moments,” Shunsui replies as the two officers approach the guarded doors to the hall. “Here we are, Nanao... welcome to the dragons' den. Be careful where you step.”

“Captain Kyōraku!” a familiar voice welcomes them as a shinigami in a white mantle bows. “Good to see you well.”

“And you, Sasakibe! None the worse for wear I hope?”

The older man chuckles grimly. “Oh, I've rarely been busier! Please be sure to thank Captain Kusajishi for me, I have no doubt this came at her suggestion. As difficult as the last few weeks have been, at least I can still put myself to good use.”

“You heard about the Old Man already, no doubt,” Shunsui muses with a deep, calming breath. As much as the loss hit him, the new Head Captain realizes that Sasakibe too lost an old friend and mentor. “So I'll just offer my condolences and leave it at that.”

“Thank you for your consideration, Head Captain,” Sasakibe bows, acknowledging not just Shunsui's words but the unspoken consideration evident in the way he said them. “Well, they're waiting inside. Shall we get started?”

Shunsui can only grumble in displeasure. “If we must...”

Without being prompted to do so Shunsui hands over his two blades to one of the guards standing by the door, and when the other stares at Nanao she sighs and holds out her hands.

“I'm not carrying my zanpakuto,” she insists testily, “as you can plainly see.”

“Apologies, ma'am.”

With no further delays, the three shinigami are ushered into the chamber and down a long flight of stairs, descending into the darkness. It's impossible to make out the faces of the forty advisers of the Central 46, men and women specially selected for their broad knowledge in politics, civil administration, history, and philosophy. As a consequence of those required traits most if not all of the anonymous members of the organization are nobles, or else have married into nobility, while the six judges that round out the court are drawn from the Five greatest families in the Seireitei. Byakuya, Yoruichi, and apparently much of the Shiba family all know the identities of their own representatives in this room, though even as Head Captain Shunsui can't speak to the identities of the others. The sixth seat once was filled by the Ryōdoji, but ever since their exile a thousand years ago the way in which that seat is filled has been a mystery to any but the current members of the court.

“As pleasant as always, Head Captain,” one of the six judges greets Shunsui from behind his wooden screen. “Please make yourself... well, don't be overly concerned, at least.”

“And I'm as happy as ever to be called down here,” Shunsui bows stiffly, his jab at the Central 46 going largely unnoticed as overhead spot lighting illuminates the trio with an uncomfortable brightness. As a consequence it becomes difficult to even see the screens, forget about the figures behind them. “Good to see that even if the people change the hospitality remains the same.”

“Ever the comedian,” one of the advisers retorts.

A second judge speaks up. “Do not allow yourselves to be sidetracked. Captain...”

“Head Captain please, your honor,” Sasakibe corrects the hidden speaker with a hint of a smirk. “Even though you may be a member of the Central 46, you are not above the traditions of the Seireitei or beyond the need for manners.”

Head Captain,” the unseen judge repeats, “you have been called here to answer for the current state of affairs in the Seireitei.”

Shunsui blinks with his good eye, turning his head as if searching for a different Head Captain before pointing to himself. “Me? Answer for? I can certainly give you an update, and would do so happily if you asked. But please don't make the mistake of thinking you can command me simply because I'm not Old Man Yama.”

“I think that certainly has served as a reminder of our respective positions,” a female voice concludes in a pointed tone.

“If you would please update us on the situation, Head Captain?” she concludes.

“Several of our Captains are going to be involved in intensive training with the Royal Guard. Those of us who are remaining intend to use this as an opportunity to lure the reigai out of hiding and destroy them.”

Several different voices from around the room begin to assail Shunsui with questions and concerns, each of which he is forced to respond to in turn.

“What about Aizen and his forces? What if they attack during that time?”

“Captain Urahara believes that it will not be until Winter when Aizen makes his next major move,” Shunsui explains before heading off the next logical question. “He also doubts that the Old Man's demise will accelerate the schedule at all. Instead he believes Aizen will take the extra effort and put it into projects other than directly countering Head Captain Yamamoto.”

“Need I remind you that Captain Urahara is a convicted criminal...”

“Who was fully exonerated,” one of the judges sighs wearily.

“By the word of...”

The judge cuts off the speaker. “By the head of the Shihōin clan and a loyal Captain of a hundred years' experience.”

“And their hollow servants!”

“Our allies, like it or not,” the same judge counters. “The events of Aizen's rebellion have been discussed in great detail already. If there are any new matters of concern to this body, those should be the focus of our proceedings.”

“Agreed,” another man from behind a judge screen agrees. “Besides, if we were to examine every outstanding claim of impropriety levied against Captain Kusajishi we would be here all day discussing nothing but circumstance and innuendo.”

“Two languages this court has always been proficient in,” Sasakibe grumbles mutinously.

“That does bring us back onto topic,” a new voice from behind the judge screens joins the conversation. “We have received unconfirmed word that Captain Kusajishi is not only part-divine, but actively seeking greater divine power from sources unknown.”

“Care to comment, Head Captain? Your predecessor did everything in his power to assure us that Miss Kusajishi would be a sensible choice for Captaincy after Muguruma Kensei's exile, and part of that was a thorough risk assessment. How was it that this threat seemed to pass beneath the notice of the entire Gotei 13?”

Because:
A) it's the royal guards job
B) we were busy dealing with the absolute cluster fuck that had happened
C) She's in a relationship with the head of our spies
D) All of the above

Every Captain is a threat by your logic,” Shunsui immediately counters. “All of us have powers that none but those who sat our exam have even heard of, and conceivably some of us have powers we developed in secret as Captains. In my case... all of the people who know what my Bankai does save one are dead. It should surprise no one that Captain Kusajishi would have abilities we knew nothing about, or that she would seek to maintain a veil of secrecy around her Bankai.”

“And would you, if prompted, demonstrate your Bankai for us?” the same judge asks, in the tone of someone who feels they've scored a point.

“No.”

A murmur runs through the assembled members of the Central 46, until the judges manage to get their advisers under control. “And why not?”

“Because if I used my Bankai while you were close enough to see it... you'd be dead from the reiatsu alone, even before its true effect manifested. If you have an issue with Captain Kusajishi, I'd suggest you raise it with the Royal Guard.”

“And the fact that one of your Captains is actively gathering sources of divine power for her own use?” the judge presses. “Do you find such a clear and present danger to our very way of life acceptable?”

“I don't find it to be a threat,” Shunsui explains with half a glare in the direction of the man's voice. “The facts are that you're speaking of a Captain who modernized her own Division to the greatest degree you would allow, published half of the manuals on combat strategy through the last century and wrote the other half herself, has a Bankai that hard-counters the abilities of many of our other Captains, techniques to intrude through the dangai along with stealth training, and who has personally brought multiple Vasto-Lorde class menos into her retinue and assisted them in evolving into perfected arrancars.”

“Mutual good will and shared goals are the only reasons Captain Kusajishi hasn't left with half our military power, wrecked the place on her way out, and stuck us with all her outstanding bar tabs. So long as we maintain those ties anything she does to strengthen herself serves our ends as well.”

“You make the same argument that your predecessor did to suggest that the current Kenpachi be taught kenjutsu,” one of the judges observes. “The stance of the Central 46 has been that such potentially destabilizing elements should not be allowed to strengthen themselves unchecked. Why should we reverse that policy now?”

“Actually, about that...” Shunsui grins sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck.

This is going to be a long meeting...

And from a more meta point of view:
The risk was literally unknowable until relatively recently
She's actively received aid from multiple divinities
She didn't seek them, they sought her.
>>
>>782183
And that's it for now. Hope you enjoyed that little bit of insight into the process, and hope you have a bit clearer an idea how the Central 46 works. I know I haven't always made things explicit on that count.
>>
>>782183
>Why should we reverse that policy now?”

Ask the corpses of your murdered predecessors.

Also the idea of Riku just straight resigning and walking out with at LEAST 4 divisions while the C46 goes 'rabble rabble rabble' is IMMENSELY satisfying.
>>
>>782212
"Everything that is potentially threatening and doesn't follow our traditional idea of good is a danger and bad?"

At least that's what I'm getting from this, especially with Shunsui's line about their thinking fitting most other Captains. The only reason they aren't treated with the same distrust (or at least as far as the C46 is letting on) is because they do what Captains have always done and act like Captains have always acted.

>The only reason they aren't treated with the same distrust (or at least as far as the C46 is letting on) is because they do what Captains have always done and act like Captains have always acted.
>>782232
That's the definition that the C-46 is happy and comfortable with. They don't like them young rebellious hippie upstarts. It's almost as if they're puritan christians who hate hippies.
>>
>>782246
>It's almost as if they're puritan christians who hate hippies.

Worse crotchety old Asian people who are staunch traditionalists.
>>
>>782257
wait til the C-46 hear about Tia becoming 1/10th divine because of Artemis's Ritual bloodletting knife. The idea of a Hollow having shinreiryoku is akin to a holy abomination would unleash a whole new level of salt.
>>
>>782183
So if Riku's collateral in destroying Old Man Yamamoto's favorite teahouse was enough to Generate a supply of salt to the entirety of Seireitei for a whole year, how much salt does the C-46 generate when they have to talk about a subject related to Riku on any given day?
>>
>>782067
Welp, I just rickrolled myself in my head.
>>
>>782232
>especially with Shunsui's line about their thinking fitting most other Captains
Here's some food for thought.

C46 is Hobbes. Even to most of the more well-meaning of them it's all about discerning and mitigating threats.
Riku is Rawls. Her sense of "justice" ignores preconceptions and precedent to arrive at what's "obviously fair".
Shunsui is Mill. He tries to do what's best for the most people, or at least make the decision that's the "least bad".
>>
>>782569
I figure the most telling thing about the C46 is that they referred to Yoruichi as the head of the Shihonen clan rather than as a captain or the executive commander.
>>
>>782569
Making Aizen Nietzsche?

And whom, in this example, would be Diogenes? Because I'd like us to find him or her and make them Riku's personal advisor.
>>
>>782569
>Breaking out old philosophers
Whoa man, it's been a while since I was in high school. This is too deep for me. They don't really teach you philosophy in programming or IT.

Plus I've never liked things without one clear answer as much as simpler things you can just solve. It's probably why I like programming and natural sciences so much. If you're wrong you can just say your wrong instead of saying "well they both MIGHT be right..." like that Schrodinger stuff.

But it seems more like not liking or trusting the new is more prominent in their thinking than threat mitigation, both the old and the new C46. Otherwise they would've jumped at the idea to keep up-to-date firearms since most Hollows are more dangerous in melee than at range, if they can even attack at range. If you can shoot them before they can use that to their advantage the threat they pose has been mitigated to a great degree.
>>
>>782775
You misunderstand. They believe in threat mitigation to the overall structure. Specifically they want to ensure the balance of souls and harmony in SS. They do this by preserving what works, which just so happens to involve them and their families being in charge, rich and effectively above the law.
>>
>>782879
Oh, so they're like the disbanded branch of the Russian government that was given way too much power and fucked everything up after the Soviet Union fell? I can see their reasoning now. Guns would work just as well on shinigami and them as they do on Hollows.
>>
>>782899
>Guns would work just as well on shinigami
Bingo, which is why their ammunition power, rate of fire, capacity, and distribution in the field are all heavily monitored and regulated. It's an attempt to limit something that might lead to political destabilization just as much as it's a conscious effort to keep the Ninth Division checked.
>>
>>782945
Of course, since all of the military's focus is on the various major threats and not the slums, there are probably a dozen revolutionary groups bubbling up. Half of which probably have guns made by recently dead souls with better than average memories.
>>
>>782775
Also, two points: first is that Rawls was still being published in 2010, and that even if you're not in politics or the legal profession Rawls, Hobbes, Locke, Mill, and Marx made such important contributions to the way people make social, political, legal, and even economic decisions that I'd want to have read them anyway. Second point is that Schroedinger's cat isn't a philosophical thought experiment, it describes a very real problem in quantum physics.

As for the C46, they do by nature tend towards classical conservatism, in that they doggedly cling to tradition and deeply-rooted power structures. Partly in a philosophical mindset, partly because it's the only setup where they retain power and relevance.
>>
>>784166
I still don't get how the fuck mere observation literally changes the behavior of objects, or how reality defines 'observation' or 'observer.' Shit's killing my neurons.
>>
>>784172
Here's a simple explanation.

Let's say that objectively, there's a cup of water that is 90 degress celsius. But you don't know that, and you need to measure it. So you put a thermometer in there, right?

But the thermometer isn't itself 90 degrees celsius. It's cooler than that. So while it's taking that reading, it's cooled that water slightly, and now you get a reading of 89 degrees celsius. By observing the temperature of the water, you changed the temperature of the water.
>>
>>784177
That's a fairly good example of the Observer effect, but the more mind-bending example is that even interaction with light has an effect. So at the level of observation Schroedinger was talking about there's a real problem observing anything because everything could be fucking with an attempt at direct observation.
>>
>>784177
Yeah, but what about when disrupting a few photons in a stream of light to observe them changes the entire stream's behavior from wave-like to classic particle?
>>
>>784186
>>784187
Quantum Physics! Where anything can be everything, and your viewpoint actually matters!
>>
>>784172
Well I know I made a bad joke about Schrodinger's cat because I couldn't think of anything else close to philosophy that would be recognizable, but the basic gist of it is that there's a cat in a box, and there's no way for you to know if the cat is alive or dead at one point while the box is still closed, so if one person said the cat was alive and another said the cat was dead at the same time they're both right, since there's no way of knowing who would be. And since opening the box would release a poison that kills the cat, the outcome has changed by your observation because the cat COULD have been alive at the moment you opened the box. Or it could have already been dead, who knows.
>>
>>784456
Oh, should mention the observation changing the outcome isn't the point of the thought experiment, as far as I know.
>>
>>784456
Not quite.

The idea is that the cat being alive or dead is based on whether or not a certain subatomic particle decays or not.

The Copenhagen interpretation says that the particle is in both states until it is observed.

Schrodinger was saying that's absurd, using this example. If the Copenhagen interpretation were correct, then the cat would be both alive and dead until the particle is observed. And the cat can't be both.
>>
>>784499
It always seemed to me the point was to say that if you can't observe something and definitively say what state it's in, any answer can be correct until you observe and find out which is because nobody can say it's wrong either.

Of course, I've never cared much to find out the details of quantum mechanics. They're not my kind of questions, like I said before.
>>
>>784527
The mind-blowing part is that the cat's state of being was meant to be a lot more literal than the way you interpreted it. Not entirely literal, but close.
>>
>>784568
So the point of the cat was to say that at some point the particle decays, you just don't know when? And he just used an analogy of a cat and its death instead of the particle and it's decay?
>>
>>784607
No. I'm tired now. Go read on it yourself.
>>
>>782335
Enough to cause mummification.

>Will begin again in a new thread, because this one's not gonna last into the week
Also I may be writing some drunken omakes Tuesday/Wednesday, because I don't think I'll make it through the week sober.
