This is Boruto Quest, a quest set in the universe of Naruto. It is during the generation of Naruto's son after everyone has graduated from their Genin exam. I haven't kept up with the series beyond the end of the original one, so this one is intended to recapture the feel of that time of Naruto. I will not be incorporating the main show or the Boruto movie's plot into the quest, although some recognizable characters will be present. You play as a 12 year old Chunin named Takeshi. You have been assigned a Jounin squad leader named Hanto, and your two squadmates are Kichiro, a young delinquent, and Ai, a strange social outcast of a girl. You are of average skill in most aspects, although your sharp intelligence, and your jack of trades skill set have brought you far. You have just recently graduated to a Chunin after winning the final tournament. You've been regularly completing missions as a Chunin, and making progress in training. Currently, you've returning to the mission at hand only to find that your squad has been separated by unseen forces.

>A cold sweat is forming on the surface of your skin. You feel this as you clench your fist and swallow, a mixture of panic and horror. You manage to shove it all back down inside of you, focusing as hard as you can to scan the immediate area instead of worrying. From what you can see, whatever scuffle happened here was quickly over. There's not much blood or signs of damage to go on. As far as you can tell, the attack was quick and coordinated. Certainly multiple opponents, or else they would have never gotten the drop on everyone at once.

Mirai sensei's seat doesn't seem to be disturbed at all. If you had to guess, you'd say that when she leaped to defend the camp the others were flanked. Himawari was directly attacked, but seems to have managed to recover and flee in time. Shinji's book being partially destroyed is the only sign that he's fine.

Then there's Akahiko's black fur. A thin trail of it leads off into the woods. All three of your allies seem to have been expertly separated. The still burning coals of the fire tell you that this all happened very recently as well. The blood on Himawari's bedding hasn't even had time to dry, still damp when you press your fingers to it.

In the center of the camp, you glare around. As a Chunin, you feel a great deal of responsibility for your subordinates.

Who do you want to go help first?

>A. Follow Himawari's blood trail

Blood is a bit more important than paper/fur, imo
>>
Seeing as Himawari's trail is made of blood, it takes precedence. Not only that, but you couldn't imagine returning to the Leaf village with the Hokage's daughter being injured or worse. You push the thought from your mind before it can wrap around you, and kick off in a powerful step to go flying. The actual trail of blood only gives you a general idea of what direction to go in, but it's better than nothing at all. In the distance, in various directions, the sounds of combat are playing out. Most notably on the path that you're going. Leaping and weaving through the branches, it doesn't take too much time for you to find yourself in a somewhat open clearing in the center of the forest. Several dozen meters of open freedom in every direction, covered by craters and destroyed rubble. Much of the grass has been completely overturned, making the battlefield difficult to navigate on foot. Stopping at the edge to scan, you immediately spot Himawari.

You expected to see her at least somewhat injured, but the scene in front of you is rather surprising. She's in the Gentle Fist's trademark combat stance, with her back to you. Across the field a little bit, you can see some sort of foe. Her opponent is older than both of you by several years, but still clearly a teenager. The skin on his forearms is fiercely scraped and burned, dripping blood.

It appears he had a direct run in with Himawari's rotation. The teenager is several inches taller than you, with a lighter shade of brown hair and deeply tanned skin. His hands look leathery, and the ripped flak jacket reveals a stack of powerful, defined core muscles. Obviously a taijutsu fighter of some skill.

>A. Run directly out there, and join Himawari in the fight. Ask the man who he is

Oh shit hi mini did you're Internet stop shiting itself
>>
As you start to circle around the edge of the field, you become sure that Himawari has spotted you. She doesn't react, but the Byakugan gives her full 360 degree vision. As for her opponent, he seems to be pretty much entirely focused on her. It's trivial to position yourself behind him. In fact, as you're approaching, you can hear him boasting. Despite the fact that he's being snuck up on.

"I have to admit it, you're a lot more capable than I would have thought. I really was intending to kill you with that first attack, but you must have sensed that while you were asleep."

From here, you can somewhat get a better look at him. There doesn't seem to be any sort of headband or identifying equipment on his person, and he doesn't seem to have much of an accent. What sort of foe is this?

The teenager draws his fist back, and drops into a low stance. He slowly swirls his arms around, as if he were doing a tai chi routine. Himawari remains locked in a defensive position, possibly awaiting you.

Once you're in place, you cover the needles in poison. Drawing your arm back, you flick three needles at the square of his back.

They're all flying on target, perfectly.

They impact his skin, making a sharp "clink" and clattering against the grass silently. Just as inten- wait, that's not right..

The teenager slowly turns around, and grins. "I was wondering when you'd make your appearance. What, were you taking a piss or something?"

You stand up out of your cover, clearly spotted. "Who are you!? Why are you attacking us!?"

He holds up a finger and waggles it at you. "See, this is exactly why we're going on the offensive. A certain Chunin has been a key figure in holding up progress for us.."

Himawari sharply cries out, and leaps at her foe for an attack. She spins in the air with her arms out, coming down masterfully to strike with both palms.

The teenager holds up one hand, and his fist quickly becomes coated in stone. His high block doesn't move a centimeter as Himawari's attack is deflected, a burst of chakra blowing wind over the forest. She flips back, seemingly satisfied. "Takeshi! This opponent is dangerous! He's not like your average cultist!!"

A cultist? But this guy's a fit, bronzed brawler type. He's nothing like the pale weirdo's you've encountered so far.

The fist turns back into flesh. "My name is Otozawa. Not that it's going to matter to you, soon.."

He starts walking directly towards you, menacingly. His fasts hang down at his sides, completely neglecting any sort of guard. Despite leaving himself wide open, your senses are all screaming at you. A warning signal.

It's time to fall back and assess the situation. He's clearly powerful enough to block just about any physical attack that you could throw at him, so you're going to have to analyze this stone-skin technique of his. Can he only cover parts of his body at a time? Is it exhausting to use? A technique that powerful has to have some sort of weakness.

You slam a smoke bomb into the ground. A white cloud covers everything in sight, and you use the Haze Clone Jutsu to cover your retreat as you sneak into the forest. Oddly, you don't hear the trademark sounds of your opponent flailing around senselessly in the smoke. In fact, it's dead silent.

Peeking from the branches, you watch carefully as the smoke starts to clear. As it does, your foe is simply standing there with his arms crossed. He's paying no mind at all to the several dozen clones in front of him, making you gulp. Himawari yells. "Look out! He can see you!!"

You flinch, but it can't be possible. Does he have some sort of Dojutsu? A moment ago his eyes looked-

Normal. Full of rage, but normal. His face appears in front of you in an instant, shattering the sensation of security that you had a moment before. Only thanks to using Shunshin to dash directly upward on reaction do you escape. Looking down, you see him casually swipe at the tree branch you were standing on and destroying it.

He falls to the ground as you soar into the air. You lull at the peak, looking down in shock. What the hell just happened?

Too much is going on at once for you to get your bearings. You're having trouble getting a rhythm started.

Suddenly, like spears, tree branches start to fly by you one by one. He's ripping them off and chucking them with incredible accuracy.

In terms of defense, you don't really have many options at the moment. Drawing out your curved blade, you ready yourself as well as you can. The incoming projectiles are difficult to see, and if you were to err here it could very well mean your life. The tension rises as you start to fall faster and faster. The first and second spears simply fly to either side of you, narrowly missing. The third one requires you to, slinging down your short sword in a vertical motion. The tip of your metal hits the tip of the wood, the extreme velocity splitting apart with a thunderous crack. Both halves of the branch fly away from you, as you go spinning wildly out of control from the force.

You're launched back towards the forest, and tuck yourself into a ball. After crashing through some branches you reach out with your hands, slapping them against the bark and trying to stick as much as possible. It scrapes against your hands painfully, but you manage to come to a stop.

Before you can really take a deep breath of relaxation, you hear the sounds of Himawari's rotation.

Use our Aerosol Poison to poison him, if we hit Himawari we can always extract it.
>>
I'm reasonably positive that this guy, being an earth specialized fighter, is sensing the vibrations of out movements through the ground. Could also explain why he isn't looking at us before he attacks; he's just straight up not using his eyes.

It's also likely that his ability may work by redirecting force into the ground as well, if that's the case.

I don't really have any ideas about how to go about *solving* that issue if that's the case, but I do think that's how this guy works. IC, I'd like if we could check for some evidence of this.

>C. Head back to the clearing, and test him with Water Bullets. See how he reacts to a more direct attack

I bet he won't see them coming.

Attempting to sneak is the worst possible decision.

Such a problem.

That said, I kinda see where you're coming from, however, this kind of format leads to people actually thinking some instead of just hoping for good rolls.
>>
>>761562
Oh, this sounds neat, but I dont think its efficient to use water bullets like that unless we're already aiming at him

As in, if we aim water bullets at him, and if they miss they just happen to muddy the ground

We'd need a dedicated jutsu to muddy ground on its own, as making a forceful water bullet for that is just a waste.
>>
>>761579
You come back to the edge of the clearing, and look on to see Himawari and Otozawa in a stand off again. She's panting in exhaustion, and another rotation crater has been added to the field. From what you can see, the two of them seems to be at a stand off in terms of defensive abilities. He's too good for Himawari to close in on, but Himawari has the Byakugan and Rotation to cover her defenses.

"Water Bullet Jutsu!" you say quietly, preforming the handsigns. Exhaling sharply, you release three blasts of water directly at him in a slight fan spread. He turns and crosses his arms, spreading his stance and digging his feet into the earth. The center blast hits him directly, and his stony arms deflect it entirely. However, you do notice that he is in fact already injured on the arms. Whatever technique he's using has a moment of start up, meaning he has to be aware of an attack in order to defend against it.

Meaning that he has some sort of supplementary technique, to track your position. Himawari rushes at him suddenly, spinning around in an evasive dance.

He turns his head back with a smile, and expertly fires jabs into her rhythmic sways. She's knocked out of her movement and thrown off balance. He swings his leg up high into the air.

He's going to hit her with an axe kick.

>A. Use Shunshin to dash forward at high speed and latch onto his leg. Hopefully knock him down.

You draw out the Fuuma shuriken from your back, and flip both of them open with a sharp 'schwing'.

Spinning around for momentum, you fire off both of the fan-like blades. The second hidden completely in the shadow of the first, with a little Ninjutsu and timing.

Before you've even let go, he's looking in your direction. Somehow he's able to read the preliminary movements of your attack. The blades are flying forward, and his leg is still in the air. In his momentary distraction, Himawari rolls out of the way just in time to dodge the axe kick.

There's an explosion of dust around him, and as it clears you see an interesting sight. Both of the Fuuma shuriken have clattered to the ground. That more or less settles it, he's able to read your movements before you attack. Without even looking.

Himawari has scrambled away from him, rolling off the ground and firing off a shuriken. You notice that as she hits the ground to roll, he's already turning to defend.

What do you do?

It was easy because we were forced in to playing smart and exploited our enemies weaknesses
If we didn't know an enemies weakness we never rushed ahead, instead we played safe until we knew we could win

That's one of the reasons salad is our natural counter

Combination of sensing in changes of air volume (sensing the space where matter occupies) and ground vibration?

>>761799

Also because they were Leaf genin or allied genin who didn't want to actually kill us dead. You could say it was the tutorial level.

>>
>>761828
>>761838
So we're just going to keep wasting our Chakra trying things with Jutsu? If we were to fly up anything we threw would be an indicator of if he can do that or not. There are still other enemies fighting our teammates, we need to not be wasteful.
>>
>>761838
Completely possible

Earth and wind sensory Justus are bullshit like that so it can be one of the two or both at the same time
>>
>>761838

It's time to test some theories. The analyzing phase is over. What you're certain of is that you're facing a very strong opponent. All of the tactics that you've used up until now have been key clinchers against most people you fight. This guy can brush off just about anything, it seems. But everyone has a weakness.

Your mind goes back to fighting Roku in the preliminaries. And Mari in the tournament. Then Boruto at the finals. So many other fights, too. Seemingly impenetrable defense. Unstoppable power. Your foes had it all in spades.

Lowering your stance slightly, you dig your heels into the ground as you focus on the jutsu. The beam of chakra hits Otozawa directly. You're at least confident that he can't see or detect chakra now, as well.

He slaps Himawari's shuriken out of the way, and rushes at her. He's going to strike her side with a right hook before she can stand, but you imitate a noisy, mechanical vibration. It's loud as hell, and even if it's not what his detection method is, it serves as a distraction. The teenager stops his fist short, looking confused. "What's that noi-"

Himawari fires her arm up, slamming her palm into his jaw in that narrow window of hesitation. He didn't have time to brace himself at all.

There's an explosion of chakra. The angle of her attack was perfect, and the additional force of the gentle fist has probably done more than reel him. Otozawa goes flying backwards as Himawari stands up, laying quietly on the ground for a few seconds.

You're not exactly sure if you simply surprised him, or actually interfered with his sensory method.

A moment of tense silence passes, before your foe leaps to his feet. He slowly turns to you, eyes nearly bulging out of his head in rage. He opens his mouth and spits out a gulp's worth of blood, as well as a small bit of the tip of his tongue. He narrows his eyes.

"You guyth are fucking dead."

Your face twists as you try not to snicker.

What do you do? He seems really riled up, now. Your Genjutsu was disconnected from the pain of him nipping a bit of his tongue off.

You open up your weapon's pouch, but don't quite reach in yet. He's staring at you, but you want to wait until his attention is directed elsewhere. Even though you're here to rescue Himawari, the truth is you're pretty sure it would be impossible to defeat this guy without her help. This causes you to furrow your brow. Is it really right that a Genin is better than a Chunin in that respect? You're amazing support, but..

Himawari charges forward, dashing in with a forward palm strike. Otozawa ducks under it without looking, hitting her cheek with an elbow as he spin around to face her.

She brings up her block, and the following roundhouse kick sends her flying away.

Jumping into the air, you reach into your bag and throw down the aerosol poison canister at his feet. It immediately begins to spurt thick clouds of green smoke. It swells up and begins to envelope him before he can really turn around. This pretty much confirms that he's using the ground to sense your position. You remember your brother telling you about his type of fighter, actually.

Once you transform into an Owl, you get a good view of what happens next.

Otozawa leaps out of the poison, seemingly flying to safety. Just at the tip of his arc, however, Himawari comes flying in. Before she impacts him, she begins to rotate rapidly in the air. She tightens into a ball, spinning faster and faster with a harsh blue light. This is some sort of modified Rotation!

Or is it a Rasengan? You're not quite sure. Either way, she hits him like a human pinball and rebounds backward while the Cultist is slammed down.

You fly around rather safely, watching Himawari herself recover. It's been about a minute since he fell in, and the cloud is starting to disperse.

The smoke clears, and sure enough your foe raises up. He rips off the tattered remains of the upper half of his clothing, and tosses them to the side. He stands tall and proud, seemingly unaffected.

Before he slowly starts to fall to the side, and has to catch himself. He throws his hands out, trying to balance, but seems to be having a hard time maintaining his footing. He groans. "You..What did you do to me!?"

He thrusts his fists into the earth, and picks up chunks of rock. He tosses them in your general direction, furious. Each one goes wildly off mark. You pop out of your owl transformation, falling down quickly. As you descend you fire off numerous Water Bullets at him. The impacts knock him back onto his rear, and the water flows to the bottom of the crater he's in. Otozawa stands up, and roars, turning his whole body to stone. It looks quite fearsome, but it's simply comical when he grips both hands into the ground. "EARTH MAUSOLEUM JUTSU"

He tries to rip up the earth, but he fails to get a grip as mud slips through his fingers. Himawari throws a kunai at the back of his head, but it's deflected.

You land and sprint forward, confident of your safety.

Sprinting forward at full speed, there's no hesitation in your movements. They're clean and precise. There's only one visible opening on his body. His bright white teeth. You keep the blade at the ready before jumping forward at the edge of the crater, intending to turn and land next to him. He attempts to dodge, but the poison distorting his sense of balance is making any sort of coordinated movement nothing but a dream.

The tip of the blade pushes through his teeth with ease, and the curve slides down his throat as if it were fashioned for it. You spin your elbow into the thrust, and plunge it in to the hilt. The tip of the blade pokes out of his sternum, and you hold it for a probably agonizing last few moments.

Spinning back around, you draw the blade out of his mouth and flick it down to the mood. The blood flies off in specks, and you sheath your blade as your foe falls first to his knees. A second later, and he falls down face first in the mud.

Himawari falls to the ground, panting in exhaustion. "Thank you..for coming.."

"You should head back to camp." you say. "You're too tired to help, I have to get to the others!"

Himawari nods. "Mirai sensei was split from us. I'm sure she's fought her way to one of the other two now. Let's hurry!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btPJPFnesV4

The hairs on your neck stand on edge as you hear gurgling behind you. Slowly, you turn around. It's impossible. There's no way he's alive.

Your eyes widen. The should-be corpse pushes itself out of the mud, trying to turn and face you. He moans, presumably in extreme pain. The bloody, filthy creature made of stone looks nothing like the bronze jock you saw earlier. This monster locks it's eyes onto you, with a smile on his face.

His fist hits the ground, and through a split tongue and mangled throat, he attempts to laugh. Blood only spills from his mouth in a strange barking noise, and Himawari shrieks. "He's alive!"

Otozawa pounds his fist into the mud. He's saying something repeatedly, an insane fire in his eyes. You think it's something like "Good fight!"

He barks this again and again, probably only injuring himself further. He vomits from a mixture of poison and pain, and the scene is so brutal that you have to turn away. Throughout all of your missions you've never seen someone in such a pitiful state.

"Let's go, Himawari."

The two of you leave him bleeding in the mud, though his distorted laughter persists for a short while. You're probably going to see that in your dreams a couple of times. It's a short trip back. Taking just a moment, you assess yourself. Currently you're still in good fighting shape. Despite some close calls, he never really landed a full blow on either of you. That kind of fight did well to illustrate a commonly occurring problem for you. You're able to neutralize well, but as your opponents get more powerful it's taking more and more to finish it.

You can either follow Shinji's trail, or Kayo and Akahiko's. It's still very early in the morning. You used roughly a quarter of your chakra in that fight, thankfully you didn't really have to use any high-cost techniques.

>A. Follow Shinji's trail

"I'm going to be going after Shinji. You'll be fine, right? I figure with your Byakugan no one should be able to sneak up on you."

She nods. "That's right! At least, not again..I was asleep earlier.."

You chuckle a little. "Well, can't really help that. I'll be back soon!"

Turning, you run off and jump towards the paper trail The torn pages simply seem to be a fistful that were grabbed and scattered slowly. The white paper sticks out in the dark forest. You're gonna have to guess that Shinji did this intentionally. There aren't any explosions giving away a source of combat, but various amounts of scorched earth start to make a rough trail. Eventually you come into a deeper, darker part of the forest. The top of the trees are mostly blocking out the daytime. Visibility is slightly lowered, but not too impeding.

The trees get larger as you go a little farther in the battlezone. Keeping your ears open, things are silent so far.

Shinji will know we're here if he has his bugs scouting (which he should), and we don't want to stumble into any traps he's set. Look for the bugs, stay on the defensive until we have a clear goal or Shinji finds us himself. Plant a bell and wait just in case we need to use it here while we wait.

Heightening your concentration as far as it will go, you scan the area. The air is quiet and still. You can see a patch of insects moving across a rock in the center of the small clearing, but you're unsure if they're simply inhabitants of the forest or Shinji's allies. Looking down, you notice two kunai. One to the far left, about ten feet away, near the base of a huge tree. The other is in a mirrored position on the other side, also at the base of a massive tree. You notice purple tags on both of the kunai. If you hadn't stopped to check they would have escaped you.

Kunai first. As I said, if the bugs are his, he'll know we're here. Just don't touch or trigger the tags on the kunai, and be ready to Shunshin out of the way if they go off. We don't know who set them, and some technique might make them proximity triggered.

You step over, and kneel down to glance at the tags. You don't quite touch them, but bend far enough to where you can get a good reading on the kanji inside. It says something vaguely along the lines of "Fishing net"

Just as you're starting to stand up, you see Shinji standing in the center of the field. He raises his hands to the sides of his mouth as he shouts. "ABOVE YOU!!"

Looking up, you see an ass in black shorts, and a pair of milky white legs in long black leather boots. A leg hooks itself around your neck in a seemingly impossible way. The joint locks and chokes you, pulling you upwards off the ground before you have a chance to react.

Looking down, you notice Shinji isn't moving as he stares at you. He has needles sticking out all over his body, but it's more likely those kunai down there are a set of barrier seals.

Looking up again, you see blonde hair flying around. Whoever this is, her legs are really soft, and they're choking the living hell out of you. What do you do?

You reach down and fumble for your poison bag, and weapon pouch. There isn't really time to think, so you simply shove your fist into the kit and take one out without looking. Her leg squeezes tighter as you hang, your vision quickly starting to go dark. You shove a fistful of needles in the vial, and with your last burst of strength you sling your arm up. Three needles stick into her thigh, deep. At the exact same moment, however, she sticks three needles into your shoulder for good measure.

She doesn't release you immediately, as whatever poison you selected takes a moment for the effect to kick in. You reach up and pull up now that your hands free, letting the vial of poison fall to the ground and shattering instead of bothering to put it back. Although you're momentarily allowing her to take the hold even deeper, you do get a small breath of air. The black around your vision is pressed back, and she suddenly yells. "Ow!! OWW!!"

She drops you, the fireplume seed poison taking hold. Her leg has a searing pain shooting through it, and will for a little while.

Gasping, you rebound off one of the trees and back to the ground. Shinji yells "Take the kunai out of the ground!! I'm trapped!"

You dash, reaching the blade and yanking it free. A barrier of chakra flickers into, and then out of existence. You yank the needles from your arm, and throw them to the ground. It's the generic poison, you're positive from the sensation. Shinji may have to cover you while you remove it, or you'll just have to finish her before it gets bad.

Your eyes narrow, focused on the blonde haired woman above. She twists through the trees easily, her joints bending double over the opposite way. It appears she has complete freedom in that regard, and it appears quite alien.

Beads of sweat form on your forehead.

Hard to Sharingan a guy if you can't open your eyes.

The Sharingan specifically lets you see through genjutsu.
You can't see through messing with non-sight related senses, phantom pain and being knocked unconscious.

Someone like Itachi who was a prodigy of prodigies was thus nearly unstoppable, but Sauce was just as susceptible to Genjutsu as anyone until he got good at it. Of course in the manga/show genjutsu is heavily under-represented as a whole.

Itachi was so good he didn't even need to auto-break people's genjutsu most of the time. He had a genjutsu version of "no, I'm behind you now. you lose."

I forgot how bullshit sharingan was

Gas mask? Hell, that sounds awesome. And using tear gas as a counter to bullshiteyes is a good idea.

Takeshi is going to end up as this world first true ninja.

Less high tech, more dishonored

Damn, with the rats summon we could have gone full Corvo.
And correct me if i'm wrong, but during this time period isn't the Naruto's world pretty high tech in some aspects?

It's basically anachronistic hell, yeah.

Who isn't to say we can't with Owls? Crows are like the middle ground between a rat and an owl.
>>
>>779826
Owls mean we can do things like fly above our enemies reach when shit gets real

Also mind prison

Learning about the sight of owls they seem like a dojutsu in and of itself.

It's possible
Owls are fucking weird

Wouldn't be surprised if owl sage eyes were close to par with Byakugan

Though they might be better for telescopic vision.

So: Poison bombs
Gas mask
Jetstream Sam Sheath
Finding ways to counter bullshiteyes
And now, ancient and forgotten owl abilities.

Holy fuck, Takeshi is awesome.
>>
>>782005
We have poison bombs
We'll get the sick sword that shows the leafs total dominance over everything but money (we should totally do something about that) when we finish the mission

Gas mask isn't set in stone yet, I suggest we modify it with some seals

Owl bullshitery is going to happen soon
>>
We need to learn fire release tog et boil and make sealed acid kunai that melt someone's face off.
