Shen is the source of your magical potency and power, and also the physical component to your spiritual nature (you're not entirely sure how that works, personally; you only know for certain that shen holds your body and your soul to the world like a weight). Chi is both your living energy and also your focus and potent attention upon things; Chi is to breathing what blood is to your body, and like blood it has a two step flow, an internalization and an externalization.

Storing Shen will give you a greater battery of power to draw on, not just for Barrier Combat, but for your more basic magical powers as well. Storing Chi will give you greater focus and life force, making it harder to do real and distracting harm to your flesh; being immortal, you don't necessarily have to worry about losing life force per se, but it will also let you focus through injury and pain better. Which really is still something you have to worry about since injuries can still affect your thinking and well being in general. Each portion of the energy you have is the equivalent of a life-saving amount of Chi or Shen; more or less one entire Barrier Combat move in the case of Shen, or a critical injury in the case of Chi (like getting your pancreas bisected or your liver torn open....or losing a limb).

Who knew a withheld orgasm was so powerful....uh, aside from Taoists, apparently.

It doesn't take much to review your memories of the signs, omens, and flashes of psychic phenomena that prompted Yuuhi-chan to make this noble sacr- yeah, you can't even think that with a straight face. This gift was prompted by her own premonitions, but you've had a number of your own. An ominous, shadowy presence is quickly approaching. The inky movement in the mystical wine-box of infinite capacity; shadowy movements in rooms with nothing to cause them; desperate shadows in the Void. And you now feel that Rie is involved.

Whatever it is will happen soon, but soon is relative for you even before you were immortal. But the really telling points are 'inky blackness' and 'Rie'. So, it must be Melinda Blitzenberg.

Which is terribly unfortunate. If Rie is running from her, then that can only mean she's been transformed fully into a youkai, and one that is far worse than what she was. On the plus side, she probably can't use sorcery. On the downside, she didn't need sorcery to move without being noticed in a seemingly instant manner, and she had a lot of mouths and eyes to begin with. So, very bitey and impossible to trick by obscurement or slight of hand. Chances are very good you'll have to concern yourself with attacks from multiple angles. It would also have to be in a Barrier – she might not be able to manifest in the real world, but youkai seem to have very little trouble creating Barriers of their own weather you want them to or not.

The delivery of Horobi's ruyi before the return of Rie and Melinda's transformation is unlikely to be coincidental; The Jade Emperor, may he live Ten Thousand times Ten Thousand years, is relatively omniscient; but that applies only to his own realm. If this situation is included in that realm, then only an idiot would presume that Enma-Oh is not involved, and therefore the Eight Demon Immortals are likely to be involved. In fact, it is entirely likely that they would be nearby – at least two of them, a sorcerer and a bodyguard for said sorcerer. So you're looking at a lot of biting and a lot of punching, backed up by a modicum of magical power.

The best way to fight physical force is with more physical force, but youkai are hard to use only physical force against, and it might be nearly impossibly to use physical force against Melinda if she's gone full youkai, just because amorphous things made out of hair are tough to chop up. You've seen Ju-on. You'd need that more for any Immortal Demons that would show up, and even then that's iffy; so power would be the better way to go. But all those mouths....so at least some Chi, and some Shen.

You can't split it evenly, each event (near event, rather!) was separate and you garnered energy each time. You have no idea what power the ruyi will provide, so that's a null set; you can't choose based on that power because you haven't a clue what power it would provide other than giving you Horobi's powers. You also can't presume you'll have too much help; maybe....two others. Three, at the very most. Rie won't be in any condition to help, and you suspect that if she's running – if she's even alive – she'll need spiritual and medical help. So....Yuuhi, yourself, and maybe two others. Kiku, Er Yin, and Yui are the healers and mystics – no, you have Fuuta-chan too. Nope, too hard to say, you just don't know what might be useful in the situation directly.

So....two of Shen and one of Chi will make you a little more resilient, and a lot more powerful. Two of Chi and one of Shen makes you much more resilient and a little more powerful; though Shen gives more power than Chi does, as a general rule and in this type of situation. Of course, you could bank some of it into a weapon or yourself, giving yourself a potent edge.

The energy you've collected with Yuuhi's help sits in your center, potential power held in momentary abeyance. You can't do much until you do something with it, because otherwise it will just become Jing again, and you kind of have enough of that to last other people's lifetimes somewhat literally.

They are still separate bundles of energy, though you couldn't describe the mechanism of how it works or feels for the life of you (ha ha). So you take one bundle and slowly inhale and exhale, merging it with your breaths, and with your breaths into your Chi. The effect is immediate and intense; you feel more focused, more aware of yourself and your surroundings, your mind more clear. Considering how clear it was, this is a feat. As you relax and assimilate the new perceptiveness and self awareness into your world view, you become more relaxed and calm. It's interesting. You can see why Yuuhi-chan sometimes seems bizarrely perceptive for someone as scatterbrained as she is if she does this a lot.

The harder one is merging the energy into your Shen. It's less a matter of merging, though, and more a matter of assimilating it. Closing your eyes you let the energy percolate through your body, adding it to the elemental forces within you, both the strong and the weak. Unlike Chi, which flows through the body, Shen is part and parcel of your body, while being energy. And with that understanding, the added energy throughout your body suddenly shifts, a slight but powerful sensation of becoming, and you reel in place, your heart hammering, your head filled with static. Your hands, the jeweled parts, are glowing brightly, as are your eyes and horns (again).

You take in huge gulps of air, and exhale quickly, reestablishment equilibrium by giving your newly empowered body more oxygen to work with. It takes a few minutes, but you recover. Definitely reminiscent of eating mermaid flesh. Heady stuff. You're kind of surprised more spirit-children don't do this kind of thing.

Yuuhi-chan lifts her head, perks her ears, and blinks sleepily at you. You stroke her hair gently and she settles down, sleeping as the glow fades to a glimmer in your crystalline body parts. And the vanes of your tail, you note with a little amusement.

Converting the remaining energy into Chi is easy, but you then focus on Matagama-no-Shitoki....and that's all it takes. The Chi is gone from your awareness, but invigorates and intensifies your awareness of her, and hers of you. Her joy and pleasure at being so gifted and recognized is triumphant and yet humble, accepting her place as your guardian and protector. It is almost criminally easy to manage the exchange, and she exults in your love and appreciation.

Yuuhi snuggles into the mats and silk sheets you made for the ritual, and you stroke her hair, basking in your newfound awareness and restored sense of self. It's only been an hour and a half, and you gently clean yourself and Yuuhi-chan up with warm water and warmer breezes, as well as cleaning the sheets. She half dozen, ctill curled up, and her ear twitches slightly. You stroke the soft ear and she immediately falls into a deeper, more comfortably sleep.

You have to think on that one a moment. Considering how the damn thing makes you feel, you're not sure what might happen, much less how others might feel around you. On the other hand, you're both as pure – as near as you and she can be considered pure – and relaxed as you can be, and you're in what might be the safest room in the entire suite. “Well, it might be safer, but no, you can stay if you like, darling.” She blinks slowly and her ears lay back, her tail waving slowly. Leaning forward you kiss the bridge of her nose lightly, and she blushes and her ears prick up instantly. “Well, mostly, I'm worried about you freaking out and then me freaking out, and bad things happening from there, Yuuchi. I'd much rather have you be safe than not, but since I'm going to be examining the ruyi of Ame-no-Horobi-no-Mikado, I'm not certain if I should be alone either.”

She blinks slowly. “Wassat.” It takes you a moment to decipher what she actually said, which was apparently a sleepy version of 'what is that'.

“Horobi's badge of office in the Celestial Heavens. It lets me take on his power without actually being him. All the power, no horrible disasters. But I can only use it against the King of Hell and his minions.” She nods absently and lays down, curling up and resting her head and shoulders in your lap again.

“M'kay.”

Well then. “So....you won't be freaked out by me holding it?”

“Nmhhmn.”

You reach into nowhere, noting that it's only a little less tacky than the last time – brief resurgence in the stock markets, no doubt – and pull out the edict box. Setting it aside you open it to reveal the letter as well as the slender red box containing the ruyi itself. That frantic, frenetic energy rushes through your body when you expose the box containing the ruyi.

Yuuhi-chan opens one eye and looks up at you, her expression calm and placid, but that gaze very cold and calculating. You take a deep breath and center yourself again, allowing yourself to accept and get used to the tingling sensation, the way you did when you first took it into Nowhere. When you glance down, Yuuhi has once more closed her eyes, and is resting peacefully. You relax for a moment more, before opening the box containing the ruyi itself.

You did so once before, when you first received it, and it looks no different now: a slender, dragon-like rod of white jade, carefully polished and lovingly cared for. The design is positively ancient, and unlike most it is offset; the 'base' it rests on is at the heavy end, along the back of the dragon. There are decorative marks along the body of the dragon, and it's horselike head is bowed, looking down upon those that it must judge. The back has a second base, which you suspect has Horobi's chop on it.

Your heart is pounding and your hair is tingling.

You look down at the very lovely but otherwise ordinary red box with the soft silk lining and the ruyi that is cradled within. Typically speaking you're usually pretty cautious about spiritual things that you're unfamiliar with. Cats, strange spirits, nogitsune, the works. This is really no different. It doesn't seem like a kami, but by all rights it should be one. So you bow your head over your hands, and speak softly and politely.

“Greetings to you, Scepter of the Dragon Horobi. I am Ryuu Ryukusa, keeper of Horobi's mikoto until such time as it is needed. Please allow me the privilege of using you to defeat the King of Hell as His Celestial Majesty, the Jade Emperor of the Celestial Heavens, may he live Ten Thousand times Ten Thousand years, has requested of me.” you lift your head and while Yuuhi-chan might not be looking at you, her smile is a dead giveaway.

You feel your cheeks coloring; you also don't receive any kind of response. Still, you have satisfied every courtesy you can think of. You slowly reach down with your right hand and pick up the jade scepter. Your heart jumps and you feel your blood rushing even faster....

Deep in the ocean, the tectonic plates crack and widen, lava spilling up from the depths; Mount Fuji trembles, his molten core heating further. The fault line in the ocean near Japan shifts an incredible eight feet, startling the tsunami that will destroy the coastline. The spirits of Aokigahara scream as one and flood down the mountainside. The skies above Japan darken, swirling as the hurricanes begin. All of Japan looks up as one, hearing, seeing, feeling the spirits, the gods, the monsters looking down upon them and judging them.

You gasp for breath as Yuuhi-chan gently grips your shoulders, keeping you upright, her concern written large across her delicate face. “Aniki. Breathe aniki!” It takes effort to slow your breaths to something that won't make you pass out; your heart slows as your breaths slow, and you feel the power surging through your body. They were just memories, only memories; the buildings, the styles of dress, the landscapes, each a different time, each a different doom, but all undoubtedly real, some time in the past. Pasts? You're not sure.

“Aniki!” Yuuhi-chan's voice is stern now. “Are you all right?!”

“Still working....working through it, Yuuchi....” you rasp, your throat dry. Your heart wants to race, wants to burst in your chest, immortal and undying though you might be. You force your breaths to be slow, careful, deep, controlled. “Not doin' so hot....” you admit, well aware that while this can't kill you for good, it would probably be bad if you let it do so at all.

Yuuhi jerks her head back and then she slumps slightly, her eyes closed and her ears relaxed, her tail limp rather than half exploded the way it was a moment ago. You focus on her and your heart rate immediately jumps back up to ludicrous speed, forcing you to concentrate on yourself. Only faintly do you hear the door opening behind you as Yuuhi stirs slowly to wakefulness, but the surging power is taking all your effort to master.

Soft, cool hands alight on your shoulders. “Breathe aniki,” the worried voice of Yui—niji-chan murmurs as she settles next to you. Your eyes are half closed, the greying of your vision another warning sign you have to keep under control. “Breathe and this will pass,” she murmurs, sounding more confident than she feels. Her Chi is strong, flowing in her palms along your skin in slow, steady waves.

The other hand grips gently, tenderly, the power in it contained within iron control. Akari's hand is cool and gentle, the Chi you can feel along it potent and smooth, almost a singular motion despite the waves it flows in.

It's just power. Power can be controlled. If not controlled, then contained. And if not contained, then....then shared. If you must share it, it would be with Yui, and Akari. They are your Harbinger and your Herald, your proclamation of doom and your shout of warning. But they don't need this now. They're no more ready than you are, so you have to handle this. For them, so they don't have to help you this time.

Because you've god smiles to protect, and this is not protecting them at all!

….just like that, the rushing power slows, fades to a trickle of potency, a simple thread of power that you can tug upon and release the floodgates of Yomi with. But they're no longer just floodgates, they are floodgates you control, power you can wield with as much precision or carelessness as you desire.

Takign one last deep breath, you let it out nice and slow, feeling the frenetic, catastrophic energies fade and stabilize in equal measure.. “I'm....fine,” you whisper softly. Yuuhi sighs and relaxes finally. “I'm all right, niji-chan,” you murmur, addressing all three of them.

You look at the gleaming white jade, so innocuous, so deadly. The gently hands on your shoulders become soft cheeks and arms along your back, and around your waist, hugs and holding, Yuuhi wraps her arms about your waist and slumps against your breasts, looking up at you from your cleavage. “You're hot,” she claims mildly, much to Yui's amused giggles. Akari just smiles against your shoulder.

She's right, in that you're definitely feverish, but you'll survive it easily enough. “Well, all my niji-chans and their girlfriends and my wife....wifes? Wives. Yeah, they seem to think I'm pretty hot, so, yeah, that's kinda a given.” Yuuhi-chan blinks solemnly at you; you run your fingers along her hair between her ears, which she lays back for you. “You're pretty hot too, but that could be your fur, so there's that.” Stroking Yuuhi's hair is soothing, and not just for her; her giggles seems to indicate she understands you're joking, which is good. You relax into the arms of Yui and Akari, and sigh softly. “Actually, on the hotness scale, I'd rate Kiki-hime a lot higher than me....”

Yui snickers at that, and Akari murmurs, “You haven't caught her looking at you when you're talking to other people.”

“Yeah?” you ask, genuinely curious.

“Her eyes get wide and she looks star struck, aniki,” Yui claims mildly. You notice the faint pink glow and you glance at her over your shoulder. You catch a glimpse of distinctly out of place black over her arms; you pull back a little and her shy smile increases into an extremely embarrassed grin.

“What on earth are you....” Turning at the waist you lean back into Akari, who supports you with her hands on your shoulders, while Yuuhi's head slides down, a position she doesn't seem uncomfortable with as she tightens her grip around your waist and nuzzles your belly.. You really can't keep the shock from your face when you actually see what Yuuhi is wearing, especially given that she's your height now.

Yui has apparently been the victim of some kind of joke, dare, or punishment of some soft, except it's not really working. She is wearing, to your surprise, a sailor fuku style schoolgirl's uniform. It is styled, in point of fact, exactly like the one that Akari wears, crimson piping and all. She squirms uncomfortably under your gaze, as you drink in the sight, the bandanna about her throat getting a slight and very careful tug so as not to dislodge it. Her pleated skirt is much higher than her knees, but she is wearing knee high stockings and black Mary-Jane style shoes to complete the look.

You narrow your eyes and she blinks, looking a bit taken aback, but your next words give her some relief. “You can't be the only victim....” You lift a finger and are suddenly very aware that the gesture could do far more than direct a mere lightning bold at the spot you point to. “Akari! Sit.” Her breathy, sweet giggles are music to the ears and you have a hard time maintaining the stern expression as she moves around you. This makes you have to sit up a bit, which leaves Yuuhi's head in your lap as she squirms back to accommodate you. Again, distinct lack of complaint there.

The shudder her tongue elicits when she casually licks your belly just below your navel is even harder to suppress than your smile.

Akari crawls around you, and then slides onto the sheets to sit next to Yui, who relaxes and wraps her arms about Akari's neck, posing for you as well as taking comfort in her lover's nearness. Akari isn't wearing her schoolgirl's uniform....she's wearing a boy's uniform, which makes your heart skip a beat in an entirely natural and predictable manner, given that she's basically a perfect contrast to Yui's obvious femininity despite her own delicate curves beneath the straight lines of her outfit. Their matching silver and sapphire dragon collars – Yui's with a loop for a leash – gleam in the candlelight.

“....okay, so my girls are much much cuter than me....” you murmur softly, the sight of the twain utterly stunning.

Yuuhi slowly rises to her arms again and looks at the two lovers, and her eyes widen. “Cute!!!” she exclaims brightly.

You stare for a moment longer, letting them see every nuance of expression in your longing, adoring, and admittedly salacious gaze. Their expression both brighten immensely upon seeing the effect their uniforms have on you. Yuuhi's tail is swishing back and forth rapidly, almost, you might say, eagerly. And the temptation to tease and tease hard is strong, so very strong.

If you weren't holding an artifact that could let you casually destroy the local area – you know, like Tokyo, maybe the five nearest prefectures around it, and half the island as collateral damage – and in a shrine dedicated to more than just Amaterasu-Omikami (who would totally understand, you're positive!) you might just do what every instinct demands of you.

Yuuhi leans close and whispers loudly, “Already? After all that?”

You feel the blush heating your cheeks, and apparently are the subject of the teasing, rather than the instigator at this moment. Yui blushes as well, and looks down, embarrassed; meanwhile Akari giggles melodiously, making your heart simply melt.

“I take it,” you murmur as you place the jade ruyi carefully in it's box and close the lid tightly before dropping it and the edict box into Nowhere, “That this....magnificent display of beauty was Kiki-hime's idea? And that it has something to do with the dress she requested I wear?” Akari simply hums an agreement. “So, delinquent? No....ah. Country hick.” Akari's face goes blank in surprise and Yui looks dumbfounded. Yuuhi's tail lashes slowly and she wraps you in a clean robe of sapphire blue satin and silver embroidery. “Well, it was an easy guess,” you murmur.

You check the image in your head, and are gratified that it is perfect in most every detail; they will look lovely when you paint them for Kiki-hime. “You are not allowed to go to Shinjuku without an escort wearing those uniforms, you two. It would cause a riot.” Yuuhi nods sagely, as she ties your obi for you, and you straighten up for her. Reaching over you caress their horns, stroking them lightly. “If we weren't here, in the presence of the kami and the kamuy....”

“We could-”

“No, Yuuhi-chan. Wait, what are you suggesting?”

She looks at you blankly. “Ravishing them both together until they're exhausted as you should have been?”

Yui and Akari look at one another in surprise.

“Right, that's what I thought, and the answer stands.”

“Awww. They're cute though,” she offers.

“Not in the shrine, I'm sure that's the absolute epitome of impurity, Yuuchi.” Yui nods rapidly, still alarmed by the suggestion.

“Kiki-hime has formally requested a date today as well, but later,” reminds Akari.

“So she has. That being the case....you two are to escort me to our bedroom.” you rise, and bow formally to Yuuhi, eyes closed. She smiles up at you dumbly. “Thank you very much for your care and love, Yuuhi-chan. I will use the gifts you have given me wisely and carefully.”

“Uh huh!” She settles down, still naked, in the pile of sheets and blankets, and is immediately asleep, curled up with her tail wrapped around her body on the blankets, the very tip coverign her nose and mouth. Truly asleep: you can feel it.

“Aniki, that is one strange girl,” Yui-chan murmurs softly.

“Yu-chan....have you not seen the people around us?” Akari chides gently as she rises and pulls her lover to her feet.

You smile as the lead the way, arms about each other's waists. “Yeah, but that girl is really strange,” she insists softly. And you know for a fact she's more than correct.

“Hush you two. Let her sleep.”

“Hai, aniki!” “Hai hai.”

You follow them outside and silently close the door, bowing twice to the kami and the kamuy of the shrine....and the gentle, loving, protective immortal who cares for you and yours as much as you yourself do.

While shallow cuts hurt all spirit chilren, for oni-children they are actually dangerous, as they have a harder time cutting off blood flow to shallow cuts as opposed to deep wounds. Their musculature requires a high oxygen reserve, so their hearts pump harder and faster, meaning shallow cuts anywhere bleed like human head wounds and fingertip wounds do (copiously and with minimal clotting).

Very different kinds of immortal.

Yuuhi is an enlightened immortal, meaning she gained immortality through asceticism of a sort, great understanding and wisdom, and studying the Tao, then being raised by Kuan Yin to immortality. If she is killed by any manner whatsoever, she spends a certain amount of time in a hell of some sort, and then returns to the world no different than she is now. Like many of the Taoist immortals, she has chosen to remain in this world and assist others in achieving true immortality or nirvana.

Ryukusa's immortality is a form of alchmical immortality, granted by consuming the flesh of an immortal. Ryukusa can actually die - beheading, total destruction of her heart, or absolute destruction of her body by fire or disintegration of another sort will kill her for good. Unlike Yuuhi, if she is killed, she will revive shortly with no memory of the experience between death and life as long as one of the other conditions is not met (which has happened once already, she believes).

Now, another spirit-child would consider them a formidable and strong person, as the amount of pain that would be required to take that would be incredibly prohibitive to even a strong willed person.

Commonly, Water oni-children get them to demonstrate they are not to be messed with, as most consider Water oni-born weaker than their other cousins (which is technically correct - Water oni-children are not as dangerous as their dragonette and dragonne kin, physically speaking).

Each is similar, though unique to the Clan Ryo member who bears them, and their tattoos are much different than the usual Yakuza style, resembling two mon (one of the spirit child's nature on one side, and either their element or their parentage on the other), with stylized calligraphy bordering and extending along their upper and lower backs. Some will have extra tattoos along their upper arms and thighs depending on rank and duties.

Humans can see these, and have learned over the centuries that those who wear them are often worse than the average Yakuza thug,
