You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you had sneaked your way into the specially constructed drydock being run by Vahlen and her Science Division to see what exactly this USS Pacifica was. Thanks to some great luck (and a bit of masterful STEALTH SKILLS, but mostly luck), you managed to sneak into the drydock undetected and found your first major clue.

You've uncovered a large Rig, built completely out of black steel, not that weird carapace Abyssal Rigs tended to be built out of. You also notice that the configuration of this Rig didn't match anything you've seen before. You can clearly see a flight deck jutting out of it, an angled one like the more modern carriers like the Ford you had just escorted.

However, you also saw the presence of large caliber guns. At least one or two triple barreled 16 inchers, like the ones Iowa wielded. A BBV? What kind of a monster were they making?

However, all of the open holes and bare space on the Rig showed that it was far from complete. There looked to be plenty more that could be conceivably added-

"ANOTHER test?" You hear a voice that breaks your train of thought. You turn to see a pair of scientists descending the stairs into the drydock, being followed closely by two heavily armed guards. "We just did one six hours ago!"

"The Doctor wants to make sure there's absolutely no abnormalities." The second scientist shrugs. "Look, our job is just to do what she says."

"Yeah, but..." The first scientist not so subtly sticks his thumb at the two guards behind him. "Did she really need to send these goons with us?"

"Hey, considering the shit we're dabbling with here, I for one feel a little safer knowing we've got guys with guns watching over our shoulder!" The second scientist grunts. "And inside voice, please? Just because they're guards doesn't mean they're deaf!"

Crap, your position was about to compromised...

You decide to stick around to see the results of this "test" that they'll be doing. You quickly scramble away and hide behind a little cluster of oil drums, merely peeking through the cracks between the barrels as you watch the scientists plug their tablets into a port on the side of the Rig. Meanwhile, the two guards stand back a respectful distance, their weapons nevertheless at the ready.

"All right, let's warm her up..." The second scientist mumbles.

"All right, starting the warmup sequence." The scientist announces as a low hum begins to permeate the area.

And then you see a cold blue light emanating from the inside of the Rig, shafts of light escaping from the open panels like laser beams.

"All systems green..." The first scientist mumbles. "Reactor is still reading offline, though."

"They haven't fueled it up yet, so it's running off external power for now." The second scientist points to large, thick power cable snaking up the wall the drydock and plugged into the Rig. "No sense getting into all that radioactive shit until we're sure everything else works."

"Yeah, yeah." The first scientist sighs. "Still, I wonder just what the hell the Doctor used to build this thing. It's not like any alloy I've ever seen."

"New application for that structural gel we use to repair existing Rigs." The second scientist shrugs as he raps against the hull of the Rig with a hammer. "Instead of just mimicking existing compounds the Doctor found a way to build completely new ones."

"Man, I wonder how many bodies she had to melt down to figure THAT out."

The hell were they talking about?

In the back, you spied Vahlen herself coming down the stairs, no doubt to personally oversee the test. However, it wasn't just her. Easily an entire squad of guards were coming down with her.

You were tempted to see what Vahlen would say, but with that extra manpower, they'd most likely cut off any possible chances of escape...

RUN RIGHT OUT
"HELP I CANT STOP MY SCREWS AND I DONT KNOW WHERE I AM OR GOING!"
>>
>>735109
You decide now was the time to get out while you still could. Thankfully, the drydock basically opened up out into the bay, so it was a simple matter to scramble over to the water's edge, summon your your Rig, and just sail out before anybody realized you were there.

Exiting the covered drydock felt like crawling out of a monster's cave. The bright sun and the ocean wind were welcome changes to the dead and still air inside the lab.

Still, it bothered you. Was Vahlen trying to make a new Woel? No... this seemed to be far larger in scope. She wasn't just trying to make a backup copy this time, she was making something entirely brand new. An artificial shipgirl!

You weren't sure if that was a good thing or not.

You then check your watch and gasp. It was nearly time to head back to the plane. You didn't realize so much time had passed and you hightail it back to the airfield.

"Late as usual." Portland sighs as you sprint to the waiting C-130. "I hope you weren't getting into trouble."

"Well..." You pause. Should you tell her?

"Actually, Sweet Pea..." You look around and quickly push Portland to the side, where nobody could eavesdrop on you. "I uh, found something. Something big."

"You've been snooping?" Portland raises a bespectacled eyebrow.

"Well, uh, yeah, kinda." You admit. "But I got a reason! Remember all that shit with Woel?"

"I remember." Portland pauses. "Don't tell me Vahlen made another-"

"Nothing like that." You shake your head. "But she's at it again. She's going BIGGER. She's moved on from makin' clones of us to just making completely brand new shipgirls!"

"That can't be possible." Portland shakes her head. "Not even WE know how we're the way we are..."

"Well, Vahlen figured SOMETHING out." You sigh. "She's got a goddamn custom Rig already built!"

"Really?" Portland gasps. "I'm sure she couldn't have done this without the Admiral knowing about it, especially if she's developing it in Pearl. I honestly don't know what we can do about it right now, short of just barging in and burning down everything.

"Well-"

"We should tell the Captain." You say. "I think he's better to this investigation shit, and he's always got the Admiral's ear."

"That's... not a bad idea." Portland agrees.

"So where is he?" You ask.

"He never left the plane." Portland rolls her eyes. "North Carolina was NOT happy about that."

"I'm sure." You giggle.

The two of you head into the plane, where you notice that some cargo crates have been loaded up into the center aisle. In addition, loads of shipgirls, not just ones from your task force, were present in the seats, all casually laughing and chatting. You trade greetings a few of them as you follow Portland to the front.

As always, the Captain us in the communications compartment, busy reading away at the latest report. He then turns as if he already knew you and Portland would approach.

"Portland. Hoel." He nods respectfully to you two. "How can I help you?"

And tell the Captain everything you had discovered so far. The strange budget requests, the construction of the drydock, and the presence of the mysterious Rig.

"...I see." The Captain frowns. "This is rather concerning."

"You mean you didn't know?" Portland blinks.

"The Admiral doesn't tell me everything, and usually for good reason." The Captain sighs. "He probably predicted that Hoel would want to get involved if she ever found out."

"Well he was damn fucking right!" You grimace. "What can we do about it?"

"Right now?" The Captain crosses his arms. "I can do some investigation, track down some of our contacts, but we might attract unwanted attention if I do."

Why all the hate for artificial Shipgirls anyways? Being able to get more shipgirls than relying on them popping out randomly, means the world would have a new way to gain more defenders against abyssals. There could be a risk of crazy, but aren't there more than enough shipgirls to take care of that kind of accident anyways?

I think it's cause there's an assumed risk of them going abyssal or being easier to sway since being artificial they probably don't have souls. also the whole "meddeling with unknown forces" thing.
I'm more interested in seeing hoel adopt this new artificial ship girl as a kid sister or daughter though.
>>

General idea is concern for the girls themselves. Knowing what Nazibitch has done (and was intending to do with Woel), there's a good chance she's making girls as live test subjects (to torture whilst jilling off to their screams) and/or as more controllable REPLACEMENTS for us. And what do you think happens to us when we're 'obsolete'?

"Nah, I think we're good to go." you say.

"Oh dear, can you all just please wait a moment?" Mulberry says cheerfully as she quickly shuffles up to the plane as fast as her Victorian dress would let her. "I know you all have a long flight ahead of you, so I spent the morning making these!"

She snaps her pale fingers and an army of faeries surge forward, all of them lugging large containers packed to the brim with lunch boxes, each one having a particular shipgirl's name scribbled on in permanent marker.

"I tried to make each one to your tastes, but I was in a tad bit of a hurry and there are a few new faces here, so I had to improvise a bit!"

There's a number of cheers and thanks from the assembled shipgirls as the lunches are distributed. However, since it wasn't quite lunchtime yet, nobody opens them.

"Thanks a lot, Mul!" You wave happily as the loading ramp begins to close.

"Have a safe flight!" Mulberry smiles warmly and waves back.

And the ramp closes. The plane's loadmaster then barks at all of you to get seated and strap in before the plane takes off.

You finally take the time to look around and take stock of who exactly is on the plane. In addition to your own Task Force, you could see the battleships Iowa, North Carolina, and Washington. There were also the carriers Enterprise, Hornet, and Midway. San Fran also seemed to be coming along for the ride. It seemed like the Admiral was sending along all of his heaviest hitters.

Speaking of the Admiral, he was present as well, sitting up at the head of the plane. He actually looked to be fast asleep, though Sam , who was sitting next to him, seemed to be playing something on her phone now that she was out of her boss' watchful eye.

You find yourself wandering towards the carrier trio, no doubt following your instincts as a destroyer. The three carriers seem to be in a beat of a lively discussion.

"So what exactly the Japanese carriers like?" Midway asks curiously. "By the time I was in service there were all... well... not present by then."

"Ah, most of the younger ships will tend to dismiss their effectiveness, but early in the war, they were absolutely terrifying." Enterprise says coolly.

"Aaaah, well, I do gotta hand it to them, they fight like maniacs!" Hornet concedes. "Sure, they might not have all the bells and whistles they do, but their torpedo bombers really knew what they were doing!"

"Say what you will, but they certainly didn't give up at Midway, even with the tables turned on them." Enterprise sighs nostalgically. "Hiryuu in particular fought bravely to the last, even as her sisters burned around her."

"Well, to be fair, she didn't exactly have a choice." Hornet points out.

"Still, they were extremely formidable for their time, and I consider them worthy adversaries." Enterprise nods. "Unfortunately, Essex and her sisters don't quite have the same amount of respect."

"Hmmm, I see." Midway nods sagely and glances at you. "Oh! Hoel! What brings you here?"

"Ah, well, I just wanted to hang out, I guess." You shrug.

"Oh, well you're more than welcome to join us!" Enterprise pats the seat next to her to signal you to sit down. "I take it you overheard our conversation?"

"A bit, yeah." You admit.

"So what did ya think about the Jap carriers?" Hornet grins as she pokes your shoulder.

It's not like he's going to listen, so we're all wasting our time with him.

Anyway, what we should be concerned with is the threat of pro-Abyssal cultists and terrorists, and people that will side with them because of how much they hate Shipgirls/the people working on Shipgirl technology.

We saw that with the attack on the President, and that was in a nation that had mostly been able to hold back the Abyssals by pulling all defenses back to the States. Japan, which has been under even more pressure, may have enough people with screws loose to be a real problem. Especially with the virulent anti-military crowd.

"Of course you would!" Enterprise giggles.

Given that the twin studies were run by Joseph Mengele, and the guy was a completely incompetent and useless 'doctor' who really just got his jollies out of torturing and murdering twins. I'm not too sure citing this particular study was of any scientific worth.

The Nazi experiment that had any worth apparently was the one where they dumped people in freezing water.

Oh and the medical studies run by the Japanese Unit 731.

>I don't oppose what Vahlen did to the aliens in XCOM

This isn't XCOM. The aliens there were (depending on the species) either actively malicious or nonsapient (and I'm not a fan of torturing something that can't understand what's going on or why it's in such catastrophic agony) Last I checked even the sapient Abyssals are completely unaware and/or literally incapable of comprehending that what they're doing is wrong, given how they seem to have towards us the same kind of "wrongness" instinct we do towards them, dialled up to 11, and the one that wasn't was a victim of the shit Nazibitch is trying to pull right now.

I have no problem with listening. I'm actually rather interested in seeing why so many people seem to be willing to give Nazibitch so much leeway given the shit she's been pulling.

I mean, from a Doylist perspective, you guys are aware that the little snippets we've been shown of her and her shadowy overlords are supposed to indicate that she's a villain, yes?

You wince as you remember that massive wall of steel and solidified terror that was the Yamato. Yeah, a lot of people joked about her being a big floating hotel, and they were right about her being the fucking size of one.

You feel parts of your body instinctively ache from the mere thought of remembering Yamato and her plethora of secondary batteries drowning you in a rain of fire and steel.

"She was goddamn terrifying." You mumble as you look down. "Y'all carriers are lucky you never had to face down a battleship in the flesh, especially Yamato. Sure she may have been a harbor queen, but she really gets going, she's practically unstoppable."

"I can only imagine." Enterprise pats you on the head sympathetically. You don't protest, since it feels pretty good. "I only wish I were there to help."

"Yeah, well, Halsey happens." You shrug.

"Well, you don't, erm... hate Yamato for sinking you, do you...?" Midway asks.

"Eh, it's water under the bridge." You shrug. "We were both ships doing our job, simple as that."

"Quite mature of you." Enterprise nods proudly. "I know quite a few shipgirls who aren't as forgiving as you are."

"ESSEX!" Hornet makes a very loud coughing noise.

"It's bad luck to talk about other ships like that when they're not around..." Midway cautions.

"Midway's right." Enterprise chastises her sister. "Essex and I may have our... disagreements, but she still deserves the proper respect."

Huh, it looked like there was some past between the carriers. You were tempted to delve deeper. However, your eye catches two more things.

First, you can see Sam quickly rousing the Admiral from his slumber as the Captain quickly motions for him to come into the communications room.

Second, on the other end of the plane, you can see Anna sitting alone, her headphones on and her face showing a deep amount of concentration. What exactly was she doing back there?

During the Site Recon flashback, Section mentioned that for years ships had been going missing and then turning up with either no one aboard or only mutilated remains.
Then of course, there was the town itself, where all townspeople had been eaten, or worse.

I'm going through the older threads right now for how the populace was affected, but I do recall that the coastlines were basically abandoned except for a few heavily defended ports.
The Abyssals definitely went for causing as many casualties as they could, as painfully as they could.

"Of course." Enterprise nods, her smile filling you with a nice warmth. "Until then."

You manage to tiptoe over to Anna, who's so engrossed in whatever she's listening to she doesn't even notice you approaching. You just simply snatch the earphones straight from her head in a lighting quick motion.

"AHH! Hoel! W-w-w-what are you doing!?!?" Anna stammers.

"Just wanna hear what you're hearing!" You grin as you put her headphones on.

"N-n-no it's embarrassing"! Anna's face goes red as she heats up.

Guam was pretty much depopulated when it was overrun.
Every Abyssal attack we've heard described, the Abyssals tried to kill every human they could, usually by tearing them apart, and never took prisoners (we don't know about any of the early attacks since no one came back from those).
Also, as a testament to the ferocity of the early attacks by the Abyssals, the US Navy had to be pulled back to American shores, and only with a combination of all services and the Coast Guard were they able to keep the shores secure until attacks became a stalemate.

"I didn't know you had these kind of tastes, Anna~!" You tease.

"T-that's not funny!" Anna wails as her arms flail to try and recover her precious headphones. "C'mon! G-give them back!"

"Just a sec, just a sec!" You grin as you listen to the cheesy J-pop. The voice sounded a bit familiar... "Waitaminute is this Fleet Idol Naka?"

"S-so what if it is?!" Anna's face is now a pretty solid shade of red.

"Nah, nothing, I was just asking!" You grin and pause for a second. You were starting to feel a weird sensation as your head and chest throbbed painfully, like they were heating up as well.

You take off the headphones, thinking it was the music getting to you, but the sensation wasn't going away. The momentary distraction allows Anna to snatch the headphones back from you. She secures them back on your her head and then sticks her tongue out, obviously annoyed.

However, before either of you can speak any further, the Admiral suddenly bursts in from the communications module.

"Attention!" He barks, and all the of shipgirls present immediately stiffen up. "We have a bit of a situation. The Captain will explain!"

The Captain then steps forward and clears his throat.

"A few minutes ago, we intercepted a JMSDF distress call. Apparently one of their shipgirl task forces was ambushed by a larger than expected Abyssal force. Unfortunately, we are the closest friendly forces in the area."

"Sir..." Portland raises her hand. "We're in a C-130. How... how are we supposed to assist them?"

"As luck would have it..." The Captain glances at one of the cargo pallets. "One of the cargo crates loaded on this plane is equipped with a LAPES kit..."

That's when Portland's face goes white.

"LAPES?" You frown.

"Low-altitude parachute-extraction system." Anna whispers to you helpfully.

"I know it's not an ideal method of insertion, but it's either that or we leave these girls to their fate." The Captain explains sternly.

"Who thought of this crazy shit?" San Fran raises an eyebrow.

"I did!" Sam steps forward. "And it's not crazy, it's AWESOME."

"We only have limited intel," The Captain continues, ignoring the banter, "but from what we can gather, the JMSDF force is being assaulted by an Abyssal fleet split into three sections. A fast attack flotilla consisting mainly of destroyers and light cruisers, a heavy battleship element, and a carrier element. We figure we can have six shipgirls attached to the LAPES crate without dangerously overloading it. Hoel, Portland, you two will be taking point. The other four ships are up to your discretion."

"Y-yes sir!" Portland nods.

"I guess we roll in with a heavy force?" You suggest.

"I was thinking the same." Portland nods and turns the battleships. "Iowa, North Carolina, Washington, can I count on you all to help us out?"

"Well of course!" Iowa whoops as she gets to her feet. "Nothing can stand up to eighteen 16 inchers!"

"And we'd need at least one fleet carrier..." Portland turns to the assembled carriers.

Now. Hornet could launch heavy bombers, which would be sure inflict loads of damage on the enemy Abyssal ships, but the tradeoff was that her fighter cover wasn't wasn't as good.

Enterprise and Midway were far more balanced. And while Midway had more advanced aircraft, Enterprise benefited from having vastly more battle experience and better quality pilots.

"Enterprise, you're with us!" You wave for her to come forward.

"Of course." She says politely as she grabs onto the crate.

"Well, it looks like somebody isn't going to get their..." Washington narrows her eyes as she reads the writing on the crate, "...peach cobbler MREs."

"Trust me, we're doing them a favor!" Iowa laughs.

"Midway, Hornet, White Plains." The Captain speaks up. "The C-130 will have to drop to low altitude to perform the LAPES drop, which makes us vulnerable to Abyssal AA and planes. I need you to launch your planes the moment the ramp goes down, and suppress any Abyssals trying to zero in on us. Can you three do that?

"Yes sir!" The carriers salute.

"All right, here we go!" The loadmaster yells as he hits the button to open the rear cargo ramp. As it opens, you could see the blue sea flash by below. Almost immediately the air is filled with bangs as White Plains, Midway, and Hornet Rig up and starting firing their weapons at will, deploying Hellcats, F-8 Crusaders, and B-25 gunships.

Meanwhile, you, Portland, Iowa, North Carolina, Washington, and Enterprise grab onto the crate.

Fingers crossed.

"Dropping in three... two... ONE!" The loadmaster yells as he pulls the cord.
