You step off the train as you stare down the main road of Mistral's capital city towards the campus of Haven Academy- Mistral's premiere (read: only) academic institution for teaching young minds how to kill the monstrous Grimm.

You get onto the campus and see there's a series of long lines of student hopefuls getting their registration completed. You get in line and wait until you get to the front of the line. A very tired looking woman in a blouse and business slacks looks up from her Scroll device. "Name?"

>Name, gender, and race, will be taking the submissions with the most responses.

>Names need to be in line with the Color Naming Rule (http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/rwby/images/a/a8/Rwby_naming_rules.png/revision/latest?cb=20140706224439)

>There are two races in RWBY: Human and Faunus. Faunus look like humans with some sort of animal feature (tusks, cat ears, a monkey tail, etc.) Faunus traits would be determined via seperate vote.

>This is a RWBY Quest that takes place 8 years prior to Volume 1. This is so contradictions to canon that hasn't been established yet won't be so blatant.

Skyler Himmel

A little on the nose, but the color is sky blue, as the character is an Aryan.

Since Himmel's the most requested surname and Grau's got more than 1 vote (plus I think it's got a nice ring to it), we'll go with that.

"Grau Himmel." you say, as the woman takes a picture of you for your student ID. You're fairly handsome- blond hair, grayish-blue eyes (they're not quite the silver color your name suggests, but that's beside the point).

"Please hand over your weapon for registration." instructs the woman.

>What is your weapon? Please list its forms/functions- most weapons in RWBY are transformable have both a melee form and a ranged form. Others have one form but use the elemental power of Dust to augment it.

Weapon chosen. Writing.
>>
You unclip your weapon from your back and place it down on the table. You made it back in your preparatory academy. It's a zweihander that changes into an assault rifle.

The woman takes a photo of your weapon and hands it back to you.

"Semblance?"

>What is your Semblance? Semblances are special powers that everyone with a potent Aura (read: every Hunter/Huntress). Some examples of Semblances are super speed, creating shadow clones, absorbing electrical shocks to power yourself up, and creating illusions. Broken Semblances will not be accepted (no time-stopping, time travel, immortality, etc.)

You focus, and become shrouded in white mist. You condense it and step up on to the now-solid cloud.

"Alright, that's it for registration. Please wait in the courtyard for Headmaster Fallow."

You wait in the courtyard, surrounded by students. You see a number of Faunus students mixed in the crowd, and after awhile you see a mustachioed man in a top hat.

"Greetings, future students of Haven Academy. You have come here today to learn how to protect the people of Remnant from the Grimm and keep the flame of civilization burning bright. And I am here to tell you plainly that some of you will not have what it takes to become Hunters."

This causes a murmur among the crowd. He waits for the noise to die down before continuing. "Make no mistake: this is not a judgement of your character. It's a simple statistic that some of you will not have the willpower to see your training through and will drop out. But to those of you with the determination to finish your training, I wish you all the best of luck. Now, for your first trial."

There's a rumble as a fountain in the courtyard slides to the side and a massive metallic structure emerges from a hole underneath. It is a massive cage filled from wall to wall with Grimm.

"Your task is to kill all the Grimm. Healers are on standby for those who are seriously injured. Good luck."

The cage bursts open and a torrent of Grimm pours out.

You aim for the center of mass of the Beowolf and fire a controlled burst. It snarls as it recoils from being shot up. It staggers before resuming its charge at you. As you prepare to continue fighting, you feel someone bump into your back. You take a glance behind you to see a red-haired boy wielding what looks to be a battleaxe.

The boy glances at you as he blocks a Grimm's lunge. "Sorry there, got a little distracted."

He swings the axe to decapitate the Grimm and the Beowolf you shot approaches.

You feel the blade of your sword dig into the Beowolf's shoulder with a satisfying sound as you follow through with the swing, lopping off the Beowolf's right arm (paw? They switch between standing on two legs and running around on four, so you don't know if they qualify as bipeds or quadrupeds...)

The Beowolf lets out a pained wail as black liquid gushes from the stump. You're about to finish it off when the redhaired boy leans over you, holding his weapon in shotgun form and putting a shot in the Grimm's chest, blowing it apart.

He turns to you and grins. "No need to thank me." he says.

>"Thanks anyway."

You give him a nasty look. Your ears are ringing from the shotgun blast. Why the hell did this asshole decide it would be okay to prop his shotgun up on your shoulder?!

"Did you have to fire that right next to my ear?!" you shout, half out of anger and half because you can barely hear. "You're lucky I'm not deaf!"

The redhead smiles sheepishly and gives you an awkward chuckle. "Sorry 'bout that. 'Name's Rufus Princeps, by the way."

You're about to say something when a Grimm rolls between the two of you like a wheel. Rufus swivels, following the rolling Grimm with the barrel of his shotgun as it moves. "I hate Boarbatusks...they're so damn hard to hit when they get rolling..." you hear him mutter. The Boarbatusk rolls towards Rufus and lunges, untucking its body and hurtling towards Rufus

"HRAH!"

You swing your sword and bring it down on the Boarbatusk's neck, cutting the head off like a guillotine.

You look back to Rufus and give him a cocky smirk. "No need to thank me," you parrot. He rolls his eyes and you realize that the Grimm have all been slain. There are medics tending to the hurt as Headmaster Fallow walks back out.

"Exceptional. That was perhaps one of the most successful initiation ceremonies I've seen." he says casually. "Now that we've gotten some record on all of your fighting skills, teams will be assigned shortly. But now, dinner.

A teacher opens a door to the mess hall and you see tables topped with plates filled with food. Your stomach rumbles as you and the other students rush for the tables.

"You cut that out!" Fallow shouts behind you. "I will not have my students trampling each other!"

His words go unheeded as everyone sits down to eat. The food's incredible, and you are going ham on the feast. Rufus is sitting next to you, and across from you are two girls- one wearing a carnation-pink haori over a silk shirt and with jet black hair done in a ponytail held by a hair pin. The other girl has a pale yellow overcoat and messy blonde hair, along with what looks to be a cowboy hat.

"Heya there!" says the girl in the cowboy hat. "Saw you decapitate that Boarbatusk- that was pretty damn cool."

"I know, right?" you say excitedly before taking a bite of grilled pork. "It was pretty awesome."

The cowgirl grins. "Not quite as awesome as shootin' four Beowolfs in the head in 2 seconds, but it's impressive."

She jerks her head towards the girl the haori. "She cut a Nevermore's wings off with some big-ass throwing star! Both of 'em!"

The haori girl blushes. "Th-thanks." she says bashfully.

The cowgirl takes a swig of her beverage. "Name's Jasmine Kitt! What's yer names?"

The haori girl takes a polite nibble of her meal. "My name is Nadeshiko Isamashi. It is nice to meet you." she says.

"Rufus Princeps," says Rufus.

"Grau Himmel." you say.

Jasmine swallows a big bite of food. "So, why'd you guys decide to become sign up to Haven?"

"My mother was a Huntress, her dad was a Hunter, his mother was a Huntress...killing Grimm's basically in my blood." you say. "Heh, wish that was my family," says Jasmine as she clears her plate. "My family's borin' as hell. It was either this or tendin' the farm for the rest of my life."

"I just wanted some time away from my family." says Nadeshiko.

"Like Grau, my family's a big Hunter family." answers Rufus. "...For better or worse..."

You're about to ask Rufus what he meant by that when Fallow enters the dining hall and calls for everyone's attention.

"Alright, wipe your mouths and listen closely: the faculty have determined the best teams."

Everyone stands at attention and Fallow begins listing off students and their teams, and you hear your name called:

"Grau Himmel, Rufus Princeps, Nadeshiko Isamashi, Jasmine Kitt, you will be Team GNJR, led by...Grau Himmel."

"Huh?"you say, a bit surprised. Is it because you've been brought up by Hunters? By that logic, Rufus could be the one in charge.

"Well, congrats, Grau." Jasmine says, giving you a pretty heavy pat on the back that almost makes you lose your footing. "Looks like you're hoss now."

"Thanks," you say as you rub the sore spot on your back. "I'll try not to screw things up."

And so, when you go to your dorms, you go over the day: you've killed two Grimm, made some friends, and became a leader.

This is going to be very interesting...
