Bonus #1

Sara & Enchantments: A primer on the mundane arcane

"Ms. Sara, I am struck by the idea that you, perhaps, do not quite comprehend what this class is about."

You purse your lips and press a finger to your cheek as your eyes stray to the book at on your desktop.

It's a table, in actuality. The desks are bolted to the floor for the most part, and far to close together to accomodate an arachne between the rows. You don't let it bother you. For a few weeks it served beautifully as extra space for the books you brought everwhere with you.

Your teachers put a stop to that, though. Something about paying attention, and focussing yourself on classwork?
They were particularly upset when you would read things for other pieces of magic.

So now you-

"Miss?"

Oh, yes.
The book on your desk is certainly the Beginners enchanting book.

"It is the enchanting class, yes."
He sighs.

"Yes, it is indeed. So can you tell me what issue I might have, then?"
"No?"

"Miss Sara."
You can hear the capitalization in his voice, putting emphasis on each syllable to express displeasure.
"Enchanting is a practice of bringing magic into the world in a permanent manner. In a stable manner."
He raps his knuckles against-

Well, it was an enchantment at one point, you suppose.

"Do you understand the problem?"
"The explosions, yes?"
"The explosions. Why are the enchantments exploding, Miss Sara? I am aware of your studies in other classes- You have excellent control over mana, so I am certain it isn't an issue of oversaturation. So please, explain why I have not had a class free of explosions since you have joined."

"Ah. I am trying to replicate the effects of my sister, yes."
"The effects of-"
"Of my sister."
"I- I do not understand what you are talking about. You are trying to enchant something to be like your sister? Are you trying to turn the materials into an arachne?"

"No, no- It is- Hm. A counterspell enchantment?"
"Counter? It would be something very specific, then. Not much use. And how is it exploding?"

He's stepped around your table now, standing over your shoulder, looking at the scribble of condensed notes you've splayed across the page.
"There's the route, and the- What? What is this?"
"It eats spells, yes."
"Eats spells? How?"
"The enchantment is supposed to be powered by the mana of spells people try to cast at it."
>>
>>729992
The man looks stunned, like something small and edible after its been ambushed by your brothers.
"That would- No, it wouldn't work."
"Mhm. Right now it just blows up. It does eat the spell, though. Just one, yes."
"Of course. An enchantment needs to be a closed magical circuit. If the mana just runs through it with nowhere to go, then it would build up."
"Yes. So I thought about pushing it to a stone, but it explodes anyway. Or, it would have to be very large. The problem is that the circuit needs to be closed and there needs to be something to use the mana, yes?"
"What if you-"

_____________________________________________________________________________________

"...and that is how I got my own lab, yes."
"You just- You exploded class until they gave you a lab."
"I suppose? But they did not give me my own lab until I stopped exploding things."
"And they kicked you out of enchanting class."

"No? I am in the inter- Interesting class."
"Intermediate?"
"Yes."
"You blew up class for months and they put you with the third years."

"Why are you making that face, yes? Leigh?"

And you thought humans couldn't speak arachne. She has the hissing down pat. It's not really a word, though. She'll need to click. And to breathe sometime. She's turning sort of red.
Humans are so strange.

Sara is best sister

Hope you feel better soon REQM

Bonus Scene #2

Elf Venom and Idiots

Everything was going great.

Actually great.
You had a hold on your strength, the wolves are starting to act more and more social- Still stuck on that pack mentality, but they can chat and talk with the villagers now- You've got a good job, you've managed to replace all of your bedding with arachne-made blankets and sheets and only had to model some of the flimsiest underwear you've ever seen twice.

Anyway.

You're living a life of noble-like opulence, if you ignore the fact that you go into the woods and murder things on a regular basis. And if you ignore that your room is just that. A room. But a comfy, warm room, over a good inn, with a heated bath.

And all of that means that fate was waiting with the other shoe, ready to not so much drop it as fling it full at your head.

The town-
And it probably will be a town sometime soon, with the mine turning more profitable and the spiders friendly-

You're getting off track.
The town, thanks to a certain family of over-adventurous arachne, has gained a reputation. For comfort and profit, and for being accepting of monsters and the like.
So there's been a few arrivals. An older gentleman who keeps his eyes shut, because there's another in his forehead. He was fairly pleased to see noone so much as blinked at him.

The workers are fairly simple.
So they ran with the logic- and to quote, directly-
"I mean, e's weird, right? But it's jus' three, right? So that means the spiders-"
"They've got six."
"Yeah, six. So they're twice as weird, right?"
"Isn't it three times?"
"Three times?"
"Yeah. Cause two is normal, and six is three times two."
"That makes sense."
"Yup."
"So if a spider is three times as weird, and they're okay, he has to be okay, right?"

There was a great deal of agreement, and a round of drinks. You're glad the man himself wasn't there for it.

And other than that, there were still more. Some that came and went, some that built houses and stayed, some that went into the woods and probably got eaten by a bear because its the goddamn arachne forest, and no it isn't safe at all-

There was a young woman who only goes out at night, and has been buying a great deal of blood from the guild. And from volunteers.
A half horse lady with a single horn, who was delighted to find that a centaur already lived here. You don't think you've ever seen a wedding that fast.
There was a lizard that was a different lizard than the lizards in the forest, apparently.

And more, of course.

And then there was the problem.
>>
>>730037
A wolf, of all things.
A different kind of wolf, of course. Something about the colours and his smell being wrong. He had a pair of horns, and an attitude the size of the ruins.

As he told it, he'd journeyed far and wide to find wolves worthy of his pack.
You assume he'd been kicked out of wherever he was from for being utterly intolerable, but everybody gets to tell their own story.
So, he'd of course attempted to claim ownership over the wolves of town.

And, in the manner of problems everywhere, it flowed downhill until it ended up in your lap.
Because the pack was Lyra's. Which meant they wouldn't submit to anyone else.
But Lyra left the pack to you.

Which meant that, in this idiot's eyes- and the eyes of the wolves, apparently- You were somehow a suitable standin for a spider.
Which is how you ended up in the situation you are currently in.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

You sidestep another wide slash, claws tearing through the air where you'd been a split second earlier.
What is this, honestly?
How are you supposed to fight some shapeshifting jackass barehanded?
And why is the pack so bloody sure you're going to win, anyway?

Sweat drips into your eyes, and you throw yourself flat, executing something like a half roll that ends you in the dirt, face down, as a wolf-shaped blur hurtles overhead.
Hells with this. You should have gone with your gut. Arachne crossbow to the leg. Try and claim something while you find the other half of your limb, you stupid godsdamned bastard son of a-

You roll right, claws gouging out the ground as dust rises around you-
And another fist slams down as you halt your tumble, face to face with your opponent.
Who's wearing the smuggest godsdamn grin you've ever seen, bar none.

"So-"
"If you say anything, anything at all about a 'hard way', I'll godsdamned bite you."
"-do you wanna do this the hard way, or-"

_____________________________________________________________________________________

"Look, I warned him, okay?"
"I understand that- I know, alright? Half the town was witness."
"Right."
"Just- Really?"
"I warned him. And Ethe said he wouldn't have died, anyway."
>>
>>730045

Edmund raises an eyebrow.
"He was frothing at the mouth."
"Wolves do that sometimes."
"That's called rabies. And that's a different problem entirely."
"Then what's the problem?"

"You're poisonous, apparently?"
"Venomous."
"What?"
"Lyra said-"
"No, nevermind. The less I know, the better. They want to push you up another rank."

You shake your head vehemently, hair flying-
"No, no way, no how- I'm already at my godsdamn limit-"
"Well, their opinion is that if you can take down a monster like him barehanded-"
"I'm not going to go around biting bloody monsters, Ed. I'm an archer. An archer. I use arrows."

He sighs.
"Yeah. I know. I'll do my best to hold them off, alright?"
"Thanks."

And with another crisis shuffled off to the side until it becomes less of a crisis, you walk out to your waiting pack, and the day's hunt.

Plus one.

"The hells do you think you're doing?"
"Alpha."

Oh no. No no no no no-
LYYYYYRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
>>
>>730029
Medication seems to be working.
Hopefully it'll clear up during the weekend.
Thanks!

Bonus Scene #3
A collection of Rumours.
& Kenzington and the kinds of stories you get to tell when the spider leaves

"Oi. Heya, Ken!"
The caravan leader lifts his head from his drink, and from a thick sheaf of paperwork.
"Loyd! Brother! Long time no see!"

The man slides into the seat next to him, crowding the already full table- barely larger than a barrel to begin with.
"We're not brothers, and you saw me before you left for north."
He shrugs, taking another mouthful of drink.
"I know. Thought I'd pretend to be happy to see you, but I hadta make up a reason."

The second slaps him on the back with a laugh.
"Still a right bastard, then. I've got some work, and you're going to help."
"Says who? I've got work my own."
"C'mon, I won't take much of your time, right? You met the spider."

"You'll have to be more specific. I spend a lot of time outdoors, you understand. There's a lot of spiders."
"Large, red, human bits up top."
"My wife? No matter how her cooking is, she isn't poisonous, you know."
"Look, we've got half a book worth of rumours and building, what with the girl being in the city. Can you just gimme a yes or no as I read em out? I'll buy your dinner."

"See, you should have opened with that."
"Yeah, yeah."

Kenzington cleans his paperwork, shuffling everything together and flipping it facedown, leaning back into his chair and waiting.
"Arright. We'll start easy, right. She's from the forest."
"A forest."
"She's got other monsters with her."
"Her friends are charming and lovely girls. Some of em just have scales. Or wings."

Charcoal scrapes against the page as the man leans further against the table.

"She's an adventurer."
"Yeah, that one's probably true."
"She's the Queen."
"Bit young for that, I think. Also, there's nothing to be Queen of."
"The forest, maybe?"
"Definitely not then. The harpies are acting the same as always."
"Huh. That was one of the big ones."

"The hell for?"
"Something about a crown of fire."
"A crown of fire."
"And the earthquakes."
"I think that one might be true."
"Damn"

"Alright, what about the skull?"
"The skull?"
"There's a skull right? A bloody huge skull."
"No blood."
"Did she tear it off a dragon?"
"What."

"People say she ripped a dragon's head off with her bare hands."
"If you're starting a statement with people say-"
"Yeah, yeah. I thought it'd be nice."
"No dragons."
"Right."

"She eats people?"
"Mostly bears, I think. And anything large enough that she suspects it might fill her."
"Bears?"
"Probably for the best if you stay very still near her. I think they see movement."
"You're just messing with me."
"She's an adventure, Loyd. They don't eat people."
>>
>>730076

"She's killed the duke and taken the throne."
"I don't think there is a throne. And I think we'd know if the duke died."
"She built an arena full of magma and made the duke and his sister fight."
"That's the dumbest one yet."

"She's laying eggs all over the city in preparation for the spider war."
"Too young for eggs. And what the hell is a spider war?"
"A war with spiders, I guess?"
"That one must have been a drunk."
"He mighta been lying down in the street, yeah."

He stands up from the table.
"Well, thanks. It's not much, but we can clear it up, I guess."
"Right. People are buying that shit, then?"
"Half the brokers want to know what's going on, and the guild won't sell info on members, y'know."
"Good luck, then."
"You too."

Boss spider, stop being sick. It's not healthy
>>
>>730109
I'd love to, trust me.
It's just the seasonal shitty sore throat.
It's awful but it'll pass.
>>
Lann should just give up and embrace her venomous elf heritage.
>>
>>730191
wonder how she'll react when she learns she's leveling up when we do? Should be fun once we reach stage 6
>>
>>730212
does she actually do that? neat if true
>>
>>730219
yeah, when she gained her ranger class she got fangs, then when we turned into our current crowny form she said she got a huge boast in strength. She had to beg the guild not to promote her then and there.
>>
>>730230
She gets stronger working directly alongside the monsters she gets power from, so obviously we need to run back there and take her out on ADVENTURES once we get done with the elflands stuff.
>>
How does ranking work in the guild anyway?

How many more responsibilities would be heap on Lann if they did rank her up?
>>
>>730219
She does!

>>730316
It's a muddle of your capability, your completed quests and, like any good institution, politics and all that garbage.

Lann, as a member, is required to fulfill a quota, essentially. Higher rank means she's expected to take higher tier requests, and that she'll be called on in emergencies.

She argued her rank down by demonstrating her capability comes from monsters and cooperation- She isn't individually a super high tier adventurer.
She's been shortlisted, though.
>>
>>730341
Has Aria heard any rumors about us yet?
>>
>>730368
She's working harder already!

As serious as she is- and as much as she believes in Lyra (and the kind of nonsense her sister is capable of) the rumours in her area are actually worse-

People ask her, and she responds with "That sounds like Lyra"
The only thing she denies is the Queen thing.
And eating people.
>>
>>730405
So what ahs mom heard? And how close is she? Is dad holding onto her shoulders, flapping I the wind wake she creates as she moves at warp mom?
>>
>>730417
She's pushing her group pretty hard, but not that hard.
As for what she's heard- it was the standard bevy of rumours in the wake of your performance at the castle.

The last story post of Thread 132 has her hearing the rumours.
>>
>>730501
Our brothers hear anything yet? SInce they are NEETS. Has Elle? How is that smith dealing with steel silk?
>>
>>730565
They'll probably hear some rumours once they visit town again, and then try to find the queen themselves.

Elle isn't really paying attention, but she's certain Lyra is involved. In her mind, Lyra causes trouble. Or attracts it. Or is involved in it.

The smith is working hard on your spear, and hasn't started playing with the silk yet.
>>
>>730604
So what are the chances of Lyra having to get annoyed by someone making a concerted attempt to assassinate her?
>>
>>730631
I'd leave that up to you guys, most likely.

I'm about to drop off, so I'm going to go lay down.
I'll answer more questions tomorrow.

Good night all.
>>
>>730679
'night, QM, rest well
>>
>>730631
I was thinking about something like that the other day in the shower. Some dude from the human supremacist kingdom panics when he hears the news of a new queen of the forest who can cause earthquakes. He's like "Oh, holy fuck no" and sends his whole crew of grade A motherfuckers to dust Lyra and friends. She survives because her eating shit would make a shit end to the quest and maybe one of the side cast dies to ratchet up dramatic tension. Now we're a slightly scorched, pissed off walking apocalypse. I had this whole scene of Lyra click clacking down this wide ass paved road by her lonesome, Big Fucking Spear slung over her shoulder, nonchalantly immolating motherfuckers in her way. Cut to her reaching the city. Dramatic speech. Fucking raises giant ass walls around the city that they can't destroy. Rumbling. BOOM NIGGA ITS VOLCANO TIME. Pan to wide shot of Lyra walking back down the road she came from.
>>
>>730705

Not worth the cost of admittance on what we would lose, I think.
>>
>>730735
I'd be cool with it as long as it was Nin. Her schtick is getting old as fuck. We could replace her with one of those birthday card you can record a message on.
>>
>>730124
try lozenges to help alleviate the symptoms, buttermenthol is the strong version or strepsils for the less strong, barley sugar drops may help too because they promote saliva creation.

Our starting town had high quality villagers.

Also I am so curious about all this unicorn bullshit going on back home. And all elle's stuff going on.
>>
>>731099
Well, from what I gather, it seems that the centaur that was deathly afraid of us and the unicorn got married. Which leads to the question, was that centaur a male? I don't really remember.

Also, Elle is apparently getting a lot of advances from nobility. What is with our family and nobility?

On another note, I'm very scared that Mom is going to get to us if we don't leave the city soon.
>>
>>731111
yeah, that centaur was a dude.
Also, that's why I'm curious about elle. Are they trying to marry her for her money? Or for her connections to the "spider queen"?
>>
>>731117
Not sure if they know she's related to the spider queen yet. Could also be they are from some noble house that is a part of the silk trade, and want to get some spiders into there family. Would take out the middle man for them to sell the silk.
>>
>>731121
Indeed.

Oh, and I sort of hope mom intercepts us when we meet elf family for forced father reunions.

I wonder where sarah and aria actaully are, geographically. Might we run into them?
>>
>>731125
Aria will be so pissed, I can tell already.

Also, I would like to catch up with our bros at some time, since they seem to have gotten girlfriends, not that they know what a girlfriend is.

yeah, we need to head home after the elfmeet.

Hey, just wanna say two things:
1. I enjoy this quest immensely. It tickles my love of fantasy adventure and stars enjoyable characters to boot.
2. suptg search function pulls both /tg/ and /qst/ from the archive, so either link there works fine for your OP posts. Just FYI, if you didn;t know.

However to add to that, threads are vote able only if you use the matching archive search link.

Since I've begun reading this quest (you're doing God's work, REQM), I've come up with a theory as to why Lyra, and her friends, evolve so fast. I get that monsters set an EXP rate, the more stuff they do as a young'un, but her growth rate is still bonkers (in my opinion).

My guess is that it's also due to her reincarnation status. Evolution happens as you get more life experience, and get older, but, she was 27 when she died. Therefore, she has an evolving monster body trying to catch up to a mature mind. The evolutions are just shaped by what she does in her new life. Also, her "Ruler" powers were, more than likely, innate. Thus, some of that evolution power rubs off on her allies, and siblings, that she's helped "find their way".
>>
>>733024
Myself, i think it is mostly our mom's influence
>>
What if Lyra's undiscovered ability is to enhance the growth of those who follow her?
>>
>>733024
>but, she was 27 when she died. Therefore, she has an evolving monster body trying to catch up to a mature mind.
This is pretty clearly debunked by all her siblings and friends evolving just as fast, with the ones that met her later, or followed her less (like the Brothers) being far behind.
Just look at Elle, she is already a Tier 3! arachne from just leisurely hunting and her tailoring obsession.
So, no, its really just the way EXP gain in childhood affects your growth rate.
>>
>>733057
What if her secret ability makes her crown even more royal looking?

>>733063
I getcha, but
>>733057

so just how much did that centaur guy freak out when Elle grabbed him to be fitted for a dress for his wedding?

Also I assume that he's probably one of the best people in town at avoiding Elle.

Oh and since Lann grew a tail does she try to hide it or has she accepted her fate? Also if she left the wolves would her tail go away or is it like her fangs and here to stay?
>>
>>731815
It's gonna be just incomprehensible hissing and clicking to non-spiders though. Not very impressie.

Exactly! If it sounds like some horrid clicking and hissing noises people will imagine that it's translated name is something impressive and/or terrifying when in reality it's just like "Lyra's big spear"
>>
>>733427
Yeah, i can understand that.
Though coming up with a name is still tough. I named my cat 'black cat'.

So, we should name the spear big spear
>>

None of them will be fertile by the time we return next, unless we are detoured for years.
>>
>>733539

>>
>>733555
Doesn't matter because we know how old our brothers are.
>>
>>733605
and you're certain about how long it takes male arachne to become fertile?
>>
>>733689
Yes. We asked REQM how long it takes for arachne to reach sexual maturity and how long to be able to make children. You can look it up in the ask.fm.
>>
>>733737
ah I only read the threads, thanks for the info.
>>
>>733793
>>733737
technically the ask.fm said we hit maturity early on, but probably wouldn't have kids later.

Verified by how mom freaked out over thinking we were pregnant a while back.
>>
>>733832
er, probably wouldn't have kids UNTIL later.
Missed a word.
>>
>>733832
>technically the ask.fm said we hit maturity early on, but probably wouldn't have kids later.
No, it literally said arachne can't have children until much later. We hit puberty somewhere in the second months or so, but arachne become fertile much later.
>>
>>733851
actually it says they are nearly infertile, but become moreso as time goes on.

"It varies for individuals- At the absolute most, 2 years. Many start to develop 'interests' a few months after their growth, some take to it earlier.
It takes years before they're ready to have kids, though. Young monsters are nearly infertile."

Hence mom's worry that we were pregnant way back.
I don't want to open this can of worms up, but I require everyone to be technically correct at all times.
>>
>>733880
>Hence mom's worry that we were pregnant way back.
That was literally just a joke of mom overreacting, it means nothing. They are for all intents and purposes infertile until 2 years, anything else is on the level of arguing that sometimes 6 year olds can get pregnant, yes, but its extremly abnormal and unhealthy.
>>
>>733903
We're already at like a year, anon, you need to advance your math a little.

Lann's tail is temporary!
It only grows out when she's using the wolves powers, along with the wolf ears. It necessitated wardrobe adjustments because it is incredibly uncomfortable and painful to crush your own tail.
Only the fangs and eye markings are permanent. One of those everyone forgets about, and the other Lann keeps under her bangs.

>>736357
>>736490
It's much more likely!
The mother is the one most likely to bring her species along, though it's still possible- Half breeds, Humans/elves/whatever with a few characteristics of their inhuman parent.
Like how Lyra & co were born with far larger ears than the usual Arachne.

A human mother might have kids with eye markings, fangs or dark eyes. Pointy ears are likely too.

I wanted to do a full omake of Lann 'adopting' a young dragon girl. Then she would fear growing wings because it would ruin her shirts.

>>
I'm just morbidly curious that the crystal lizard is going to grow up to. I like the picture of Aria walking around with a pseudo-dragon in a decade or two. And the monster just acting like a giant cat.

As for a question.. are blessings self-only? I mean, not giving them away, but forming some sort of temporary shield for an ally if we work on the protection blessing.

>>
>>737938
>>737936
And here i was imagining she was about baby size when she was born.
Still, 6 is a lot for arachne. Maybe it is a side effect of moth based anti fertility drugs.
>>
>>737531
A bit larger than Sara.
Normal Arachne size is in the general vicinity of your brothers' size.

>>737925
It's a bit harder to tell with arachne, and the children are about the size of a small human baby.

Not for long though.

>>737960
While 6 is unusual, it isn't out of the realm of possibility or anything.
Arachne are usually pretty happy to hear about large births, as it keeps up their numbers in the woods.
>>
>>738431
So, i guess the babies are mostly stored in the spider part, if it is hard to notice.

Good to know!

Huge monsters. 'Most' arachne are a lot less badass than lyra and co. and we met a few things, like certain bears, that could have killed even us on worse rolls.

The forest is huge. Like, roughly 1/4 of the continent. Being the Queen of the Forest was such a big deal both due to the strength of the things living there as well as the sheer size of area being ruled over.

And in the present time, with the majority of the sentient monsters no longer cooperating to 'manage' the place, as much as it was possible, it is far more dangerous than it was in the past.

Other monsters breed roughly as fast as the arachne. When coupled with the population hit from the war and the return to individual living, the population, while stable, isn't large.

Incidentally, this means that powerful arachne are usually popular amongst their own kind, as they open up more space within the woods for living, by pushing powerful wild creatures deeper into the woods (or just directly hunting them.)
>>
>>738608
So if Lyra ever settles down in her own treehouse, she'll be admired instead of feared? Cool.

Though would the village (town?) make things a little safer through sheer numbers if it keeps growing? Adventurers care not for little things like fuckhuge bears or laws.
>>
>>738608
man we really, really, really need to get working on those unified webways.

The ones around our home nest were so fucking handy for us when we were smaller and weaker.
>>
>>738608
>Incidentally, this means that powerful arachne are usually popular amongst their own kind, as they open up more space within the woods for living, by pushing powerful wild creatures deeper into the woods (or just directly hunting them.)
Did Lyra legitimately open up more Arachne living space, or was her hunting to uncordinated for that? How aware of Lyra and co. are other arachne anyway, beyond the interaction during the necromancer fight.
>>
>>738686
we must have, we killed at least a hydra.
Actually, we probably should have dealt with that hydra overpopulation problem more
>>
>>738686
She arguably prevented a loss of it due to the Hydra (though if she hadn't, Mom likely would have).

Other than that, her hunting was just sort of all over, and mostly directed by her own tastes.

Moreover, one of the reasons for the dangerous monsters so close to home was how long Mom was gone. The area was sort of loosely reclaimed by the wild until all of the family spread it back out. Particularly by removing the larger bears and like.

Most of the arachne aren't too aware of her.
They don't visit town much if they don't have a pressing need of some sort to do so.

>>738635
Adventurers respect local laws for the most part- Partially due to guild reprisal, and in the case of the forest, due to possible immediate arachne shaped repercussions.

The town, if anything, will (and has been) expanding southwards, into the open. The harpies section of forest isn't huge, and humans are better served with a barrier between them and the woods anyways.
>>
>>738742
We should maybe have hunted more evenly and less bear based
>>
>>738724
They might be a good xp farming spot later on! Or I might have played way too many mmo's.

That reminds me.. what *were* those eye-monsters in the deeper woods? I always thought they might be intelligent.
>>
>>738758
we will never know.
And they totally were intelligent, they left us offerings.
>>
>>738742
So what is arachne response if a local strong spider gets stomped?
>>
>>738724
>we must have, we killed at least a hydra.
That Hydra came from very deep within the forest though.
>>
>>738776
It came from some swamp somewhere which we never investigated other than to hunt one time.
So, not TOO far away, since we walked there.
>>
>>738742
>They don't visit town much if they don't have a pressing need of some sort to do so.

Why's that?
>>
>>738823
Is "they're generally solitary" a good reason?

It's sort of unsatisfying, but true.
>>
>>738791
we did actually go to that swamp, it's where the lizards live, we just didn't go all that far in.
>>
>>738825
yeah, we went there to hunt that one time.
>>
>>738824
But aren't they supposed to look after the harpies?
>>
>>738838
oh, no, they're supposed to look after the moths.

They only look out for the harpies if the harpies remember to use their flares. Which they really should, but as we've seen, forget about sometimes.
>>
>>738838
No, they look aftert he Moths. The harpies can take care of themselves.
>>
>>738772
If they find out?
Usually to avoid that spot.
If it was humans/lizards/sentient?
Send up a flare and overrun it.

>>738823
>>738824
A combination of how nearly everything they could ever need is within the woods- Hunting, most don't need weapons, clothing, they build their own homes, healing and the like they visit the moths.
They are fairly solitary, and usually only close with family unless they end up with neighbours somehow.
Some just don't trust or like humans.

>>738838
>>738848
>>738849
Everyone looks after the moths, really.

Arachne are sworn and obliged to answer any flares, and they do.

Not a butterfly for maximum conflict.

>>739021
>Well, maybe we can take up forest clearing as a hobby during the epilogue.
One of the things I've been worried about with a monster civilization is the differences between that and human civilization.

Humans that build up civilizations tend to have a higher quality of life and live longer. Most of my relatives that weren't killed by accidents, wars or freakishly rare diseases have lived into their 90's.

Monsters live longer by reaching higher levels which extends their lifespans a lot. If they were to live in a human style civilization with less conflict they'd live shorter lives if anything.
Clearing out sections of the forest might make room for more monsters to live and increase population, but it might also deprive much of that population of suitably strong opponents to level up against. I know the forest is huge and it would take a long time to reach that point, but it's a long term issue to consider.
>>
>>740128
Maybe any monster civilization would have to be based around striving for perfection, or great competition. You know, to encourage growth.
>>
>>736930
>>740128
>>Then a hyperactive harpy who likes walking
>Roadrunner harpy
Or a cassowary harpy who doesn't rush anywhere, just takes things as they come and TEARS THEM TO TINY FUCKING SHREDS
>>
>>740128
Monsters don't rely on just violent conflict to gain EXP and evolve though, any kind of pursuit that they seek mastery in will work. Perfectly peaceful and constructive skills alone were enough to level Sara and Elle two tiers just on their own, and Lyra studying smithing has given her loads of experience.
>>
>>741719
>Perfectly peaceful and constructive skills alone were enough to level Sara and Elle two tiers just on their own
But isn't that because they had the great XP boost from their childhood?
So a monster civilization's child-rearing would be like a Fremen or Spartan childhood.
>>
>>741851
The way REQM has described it in the past is any sort of interest a young monster takes time and effort will bring them XP, it's just that most Arachne children usually lead far more sedate existences than Lyra or her siblings. Most monster children are more interested in sleeping and eating, its the ones that get really involved with their hobbies that grow faster, and our entire family has their own little obsessions they focus on.

So a peaceful monster civilization that encouraged XP farming behavior in their younger generations would probably have an extensive education system with a focus on apprenticeships to anyone interested, with an established military tradition for everyone else. More like West Germany than Sparta I would think.

>>745083
Moths fly too, but are so weak at it that they can carry less.
Though, jin is probably in the running for smallest right after her.
Ezzy's a wildcard, proprotionally she could be anywhere.

So it's probably nin, jin, lyra, shezka. With a snake off somewhere else. At least by my reckoning.
>>
>>745100
It would be hilarious if Ezzy was the largest
>>
>>745100
Ezzy is smallest if we go by absolute size, but proportionally? probably 3rd smallest

So nin would be about this size.

Nin is always too cute.
>>745115
>>745108
yeah, ezzy's a wildcard. And always feels down on herself.
She may get huge end in more ways than one.
>>
>>745163
she is a lazy NEET though, or was a NEET at any rate, so it's also possible that she's largest proportionally. I definitely agree she's a wildcard there.
>>
>>745182
We have to train our snake better.

"She needs to be stronger if she keeps hanging up with us, yes."

"No more tiny murder arena!"

"I was thinking more like a pit."
>>
>>741719
They still need to kill something for that last little bit, see Ezzy and the rabbit.
>>
Seriously though you guys.

How do we celibrate halloween?
Us it time to cover everything with webs? And maybe pumpkins?
>>
>>747616
>Web up passing children
>Give them candy
>>
>>747728
I see no problems with this plan.
Also acceptabe is snatching them like a trapdoor spider, then candying.
>>
>>747616
Hand out spider silk goodie bags for the kiddies, the kids get the candy and the parents get a spider silk bag, everyone wins.
>>
I like to think that Ezzy fully recognizes that Lyra and her Band of the Spider is the thing to happen to her life.

Friends, adventure, sleep, abundant food, interesting things, actually growing, Friends who are actually supportive even if they make her fight in tiny death arenas.
>>
>>748506
we need to get her one of those ultimate gladiator q-tips for the tiny death arenas
>>
>>748000
don't break the economy
>>
If we ever come across a priest of that god whose dungeon we completed a few threads ago, we should definitely ask for an apropriate way to thank that god for being so considerate to provide enemies Ezzy could fight. The plant monsters for Nin were a nice touch too.

I wonder how well spider suspension bridges would work. There was that talk about the spider highways.

>>751384
They seemed to have Lyra's appetite.
>>
>>751399
>>751374
My anime levels aren't high enough to find this comic.

And suspension bridges would work pretty well, as long as we have something strong and tall to mount 'em to.
Honestly we're probably just doing tension bridges from treetop to treetop.

KUMO DESU GA, NANI KA?
>>
>>751449
yeah, I was only finding the novel version.
I think I've got something readable now after a bit more research

>I think I've got something readable now after a bit more research
The novel is pretty unreadable. No idea if that's the translation'a fault, or if it's that crappy in japanese as well.

Hell, we've never gotten poisoned.
The one guy we fought that was going to poison us we bluffed out of doing it.

The first translator was ESL. A chink, I think.
The translations have since been taken over by somebody who can actually into English.

steadfastly ignoring the rest of the thread to ask:
I'm on thread 24 in the archives.
what point should I keep reading up to, at which point I can just ask for a summary and not feel like I've missed quite a lot?
also, did we go wolf orb or grave spider yet? Which? I'm hoping for grave.
>>751491
There's 3 translations. IIRC the one that's at Oni Vs Oni is the garbage one. Check Bakaupdates for more information on LNs, always.
>>
>>754977
We hit and are past grave spider.
I can't help much with suggestions on where not to read, it all is about as important as the other parts. We pick up some extra party members too.
>>
>>755068
yeah, I looked at the pastebin once and went WELP and closed it, but I still saw enough to know a lot of shit has happened.
>>
>>747616
"We dress like a fairy spider princess!"

And spider elf is forced to go trick or treat with the dragon girl
>>
>>755075
It was more of a slow and steady progression, really.
The broad stroke is we evolved a bunch, made new friends, and decided to leave the forest to visit relatives in elf town.

The details you might miss.
>>
>>755080
We really need to go either tricking or treating.
I am so grumpy halloween and also christmas don't really exist.
>>
>>754977
>thread 24 has https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rD-MZe51wYI63xxl-tG8dsxj-RWVtJu3S6Gzd6OTJSw/pub
fuck me I could have been reading this
I also didn't realize the quest was on 137, thought it was way less. Might just read to 57 and then just read pastebin or something, shit.
I also just realized I need to finish shadow quest, I have so much reading to do.
>>
>>754977
I enjoy reading the archives as much as the live threads, so I'd say just read through it all in your own time, and come back after that. There's can be a fair bit of time between threads, so there's no rush. There is a partial recap around here somewhere if the backlog is too much though.
>>
>>755168
it's probably the biggest quest backlog I've ever had, which is something.
I'll ask for the recap if it does turn out to be too much, yeah.
>>
>>755176
Don´t read princess guard quest. 300~ chapters and it finally finished. Took me 3 weeks to complete.
>>
>>755176
Well if you're by any chance still here, there's a sorta-IC recap in threads 130 to 133.
At that moment Lyra was fighting off hordes of phantoms, while the moth (joined in 44) was recapping the adventures for the benefit of the snek (joined in 65), however that was offscreen while we the players have been treated to narrative perspectives of other characters. Early stuff from Sara's perspective, the thunderwolf from Jin's, lizards from Aria's, moth rescue from Mom's, town visit from Theresa's and so on and so forth. (that list was thread 130)

So yeah, either go for that, or at least read to 65 to know all the party members.

Or just recap and catch up after that so you can jump into next thread whenever it comes and read the backlog at your pace because that stuff's amazin.
>>
>>756339
I am kinda still here, been lazing around only made it to 59 so far I read very fast.
I'll probably read to 70 or so then jump to 130, then backtrack in between threads.
Thanks.

>>756662

Question for you anon: Do you read all the discussion fluf or only Reqms main posts?

Cuz when I cough up to all this around ~90 i read most of the fluff comments and it took me around 3 or 4 weeks to catch it all up.
>>
>>756872
up till 25, most discussion fluff
25-57, just the doc which doesn't have anything but main posts
past that, decent bit of fluff, I'm interested in the blood color discussion, and laughed at the fact that it took like 60+ threads for people to go "wait, our eyes are solid black. People can't appreciate out multiple eye rolling, shit"
reading a decent bit less fluff than before, though.
>>
>>757045
Ah, i remember the eye rolling. Such dissapointment.

And we never did find out our blood color.
>>
>>757210
Why, it's the colour of our blood of course! What else could it possibly be?
>>
>>757366
Goddamnit.
Anyway, my preference is blue blood since scorpions and spiders have that, and we are mostly spider. Red blood is also possible, as it is more effective than blue, but much less interesting.
Green blood is also a possibility, if we work like videogame spiders.
>>
>>757383
We probably have red since it would require a LOT of oxygen to be so large
>>
>>757488
Well, yeah, red is most effective but most boring.

We don't even get to blush blue or green.
>>
bump
>>
>>758005
that is completely not how this board works.
Also we still have over a day before this thing hits dead.
>>
Last
>>
>>757488
To be fair, this is a fantasy setting. For all we know our blood chould be mithril-based, instead of iron or copper.
>>
>>759405
we´re not even on page 10 yet wtf. This thread´ll last atleast till the end of the day
>>
>>730037
Man, reading this again makes me homesick.
Theres lizards and three eyed monks and vampiros at home.
>>
Polite sage since it doesn't need to be bumped, but I'm on thread 94, and we're complaining about hangovers?
?????
Didn't lann yell at Lyra like twice since she doesn't get hangovers? What makes moth cider so different, were we just concerned with our friends dealing with them?
IIRC, Lyra went "it's not pain, it's just like everything is slow/fuzzy, things don't move when you want them to, I still really don't like it"
>>
>>763842
We might just have drank a lot more cider than we did any other drink.
We're in autosage, anyways.
>>
>>763849
oh, are we? I need to read up on what constitutes stuff on /qst/ don't really come here much. or at all, really.
But didn't Lyra get blackout drunk the very first time?
like, people had to tell her what had happened, and apparently it mostly constituted of "FUCKING WIZARDS"
>>
>>763852
Threads on qst autosage after 3 days since having been created.
>>
>>763852
Well, we also gotblacked out on the cider, if that changes anything
