You are Kusajishi Riku, a shinigami and the current Captain of the Seireitei's Ninth Division. Your unit has just weathered an attack by quincy who nominally served the traitor Captain Aizen Sōsuke, which was probably the result of their own initiative rather than a direct order. The three Sternritter who attacked your Division's compound were killed after inflicting moderate casualties, including wounding yourself and all of your Commandos. Two of the four who then attacked Rangiku and Ichigo as they escorted their friends out of the Soul Society were also killed when you brought reinforcements, while Yoruichi seriously maimed a third and left him as a talking head. The fourth you disabled by stabbing her in the neck, thus robbing her of her special ability which required use of her voice.

With a smile you embrace your adopted children, thankful for Rangiku's efforts and Gin's sudden arrival to assist with what turned out to be a marathon battle. There were fatalities, yes, but without everyone you know having fought so well there would have been many more. Thinking back on the condition you found your Commandos in, it was still a close thing in some cases.

“Good timing, Gin,” you commend your son.

“Yeah, well, couldn't leave the two of you hangin',” he admits. “Guess bein' an adopted Shiba's startin' to rub off on me?”

“You could do worse,” Rangiku observes, before Gin coughs loudly. He gestures briefly over your shoulder with his chin.

“We're bein' watched.”

Bambietta glares at Gin, no doubt because they met while both serving under Aizen. One skeptical eyebrow arches as she expresses her quiet disbelief. “So this was your big plan? You jumped ship early so you could get cuddly with mommy?”

“And who says she ain't a part of my plans?” Gin fires back after you let him and Rangiku free. His tone is as relaxed as ever, but you can tell by his ever so subtle body language that he's offended at the suggestion. “The Captains are fightin' all on the same side for once, we've got some stupid strong arrancar workin' with us, an' even a Sternritter's decided she ain't so bad. Folks appreciate her sincerity, an' respect her ability.”

“She's like what Aizen coulda been if he weren't a complete dick. So yeah, my plan for the last century's been to put her in a good spot like this.”

“I get it, I get it!” Bambietta raises her hands in defense. “It's just it looks weird coming from you is all.”

“Wait, what do you mean by putting her in a good spot?” Ichigo asks, puzzled.

“Well for starters I told Byakuya where to find his sister.”

Steel clashes loudly as Gin parries Ichigo's zanpakuto with Shinsō, the boy's speed and coordination honestly surprising you a little. The leaves on the trees that're still standing in this public park you've been fighting in shudder. But as you would expect Gin's speed allows him to easily match his cousin, and he hardly moves even under the force of the attack.

“My, my! How scary!” Gin taunts the boy as Ichigo pushes with all his might.

“You bastard! What the hell's wrong with you!?”

“Tell me, do you recall how your first meeting with Captain Kuchiki went?”

“I remember he nearly killed me!” Ichigo shouts back across their locked blades. “And he would've too, if it weren't for... if... ah.”

“Tha's right! I figured Byakuya would try an' recover lil' miss Kuchiki's powers first, stabbin' you through your pressure points an' lettin' you start workin' on growin' your own powers, an' Riku steppin' in would put her in a good position with your family an' all. Hell, a good talkin' to from Riku'd even get the little lord thinkin' about the situation from her perspective, which means it was even good for him in the long run!”

Gin twists his wrist, forcing both his blade and Zangetsu's to one side so that he can reach across and place a palm on top of Ichigo's head. “You've got a good heart, kid, an' you seem to mostly get what makes people tick. So you an' I both know already Riku's never been one to manipulate. Sneak, sure. Kill, you betcha. But in our family I'm the manipulative one. It's just in my nature.”

Ichigo glances at you as he disengages from Shinsō, and you shrug. It's not like you didn't already know that your son isn't just “playful”, that the sarcasm, the pranks, and all the rest of it covers up a fundamentally deceitful and manipulative nature. He can be a bit of a bastard. But what you've always trusted is his judgment, his ability to tell what the right goals to manipulate people towards was.

“I get how that worked, yeah,” you acknowledge, and you have to sigh at the next bit. “And I've long since accepted my son's various... intricacies. But Gin, please remember that while I understand your reasoning and your goals, my subordinates are my personal responsibility. And that those who endanger the lives of those to whom I am responsible are my enemies.”

You glare sternly at your son, admonishing him for what may be the first time not as a mother raising a child but as a Captain correcting the transgressions of a peer. “Do I make myself clear, Gin?

Gin's brow furrows. You don't get the impression that he disapproves or disagrees, but instead you feel like the rebuke must have genuinely stung. Good, maybe the message will stick. “Crystal, mother.”

You throw one arm around your taller son's side, butting the side of your head against his chest. “Good, then don't ever make me have to talk to you like that again, boy.”

“I'll try.”

Again, you hear a cough: this time from Yoruichi. As you glance at her she gestures silently towards BG9's head, then at the fallen body of the Question. Bambietta prods gently at the latter with a stick, as if testing to see if she's just faking her unconsciousness. Thankfully the wounds in her neck haven't been bleeding much... you did good work on that one, and avoided hitting anything that'd lead to fatal blood loss. That being said it would be best to get back to dealing with that situation sooner rather than later.

“Well then,” you offer, pulling away from Gin. “Bambi, you need help incinerating the corpses?”

“Whoa there!” Ichigo interrupts loudly. “That's getting a little too serial-killery for my comfort!”

“Most Japanese families cremate their dead,” an exhausted-sounding Arisawa observes as Asano helps her walk over to join the conversation, her arm thrown over his shoulders. “I see no problem with it.”

“Yeah, but after doing the killin' first?” Ichigo retorts. “That's not fuckin' normal!”

“Language,” Masaki sighs.

“There's a quincy whose special power is making zombies from the recently dead,” Bambietta explains. “So it's the only decent thing to do, destroying the bodies... though I also want to give them a proper burial if I can. They were my comrades once.”

“I know of a cemetery across the Onose river,” Masaki informs her fellow quincy. “It's at a shrine in the hills, the handful of quincy families living around Tokyo have used it for more than a century.”

You notice an uncharacteristically solemn look come over your wife's face, and she notices that you've noticed.

It's fine. The first 20 years of our life were important to us, but why would we dwell on them in comparison to the 200 years we've lived since? It would be like holding a lifelong grudge for someone giving you a black eye in a kindergarten scuffle. Besides, my subordinates survived that fight, and that's far more important than something as trivial as me dying.
>>
>>704456
“It's not gonna be a problem for me,” you insist quietly, mostly answering Yoruichi's unspoken question. “I mean, what kinda shinigami would I be if a grave threw me off my game? I'd be the laughing stock of the Seireitei!”

Yoruichi's eyes close, and she sighs. “So you knew. Probably from when you were my Lieutenant?”

“That's right. I always figured you had your reasons for keeping it quiet and treading lightly, never bothered to pry.”

“And I figured you had your reasons for never asking... really, all I did was keep it clean once a year. Least I could do.”

Ichigo looks confused. First he glances at you, then at your wife, then at you, then... at nothing in particular. “I'm sorry, what the hell are we talking about?”

“My body is buried in that cemetery,” you explain, rapping your knuckles against the side of your head. “Hey Rosa, you okay with this?”

The mental answer comes immediately. “Do whatever suits you.”

“Okay, touchy subject.” You shrug at your companions. “Honestly, so far as I'm concerned I'm still alive anyway. The corpse that was buried there has little to do with me as I am now.”

“Wait, but you're dead,” Masaki observes, trying to puzzle out the more complicated thoughts behind your words. “So, how?”

“I was technically never alive by that definition,” Yoruichi observes, cocking her head at your sister-in-law. “Born and raised in the Seireitei through good old-fashioned sexual reproduction.”

“How?” Masaki repeats, even more confused than before.

Yoruichi grins smugly. “Well, when a male ghost and a female ghost love each other very much...”

“Riku always told me a ghost stork was involved,” Rangiku shrugs nonchalantly.

“That's because I'm an asshole,” you explain, throwing your hands up in frustration. “Look, I'm not gonna get into the mechanics of how souls get recycled, because I honestly don't sweat the details. But not only is there probably not even enough left of my old body to qualify as a 'corpse' after two centuries in the acid bath that is Japanese soil, I really don't even think of it as being me that's in there.”

“So let's just get this show moving,” you conclude before setting fire to Nianzol's corpse.

“I'll excuse myself,” Masaki bows gently. “Seems you know where you're going, and I'm sure I'll be needed at the clinic tonight. Big bursts of reiatsu tend to mean a lot of sudden minor cases from borderline spirit-sensitives... and I'd look weird carrying an invisible bag of ashes.”

With a loud cry, however, there's a... disruption.

“Baaaad SPIRIIIIIIITS!”

The foot of one Don Kanonji collides with the side of Yoruichi's head, and although your wife's head doesn't so much as budge the medium's boot does manage to leave a muddy print on her cheek. Watching the progression is a beautiful experience as Yoruichi's eyes narrow, suggesting she just realized that Kanonji attacked her intentionally rather than just being a total spaz, then her brow furrows as she realizes that he's left behind mud on her face.

“Hey Riku,” she growls, “I'm considering doing something I swore not to do again. Mind turning the other way for a second?”

“No,” you sigh, pinching your nose. “I have a better use for this moron. Kanonji?”

“Oh!” he exclaims rather sheepishly. “I remember you! You were that shinigami, right? From back at the hospital!”

“I am. And I have a job for you.”

Ten minutes later you're on your way, having secured two big black trash bags from a local convenience store. Kanonji is sweating bullets, carrying the mortal remains of the two dead quincy and looking for all the world like a random onlooker pressed into service covering up a mafia hit.

“I swear, Captain! I'm not gonna rat you out or anything, please don't ice me!”

“These are what you'd call 'bad spirits', Kanonji,” you grin. “In the Seireitei we play for keeps, you get me?”

“I get you! I get you!”

“You're right!” Yoruichi smirks playfully, any anger she actually harbored towards the man long forgotten. “This is way more fun!”

“We there yet?” Bambietta asks.

Yoruichi nods. “Almost. It's just up this hill.”

At the top of the hill is a small shrine, clearly quite old and forgotten: there are many like it in Japan, tended to by the few locals who even know of their existence with funding set aside by a priest at some far-off grand shrine who's never been there in person. But this one is special. Beside it is a clearing in the trees with rows of stones, some of which bear the sign of the quincy cross, and others that are totally unmarked.

“You'd almost think it was a Christian cemetery,” Rangiku bends down and observes one of the marks more closely. “Uses some very similar iconography.”

With a little ball of kidō to serve as a lantern at her fingertips, Yoruichi guides you to the back of the cemetery where the graves are obviously older. Under an old cherry tree, and covered with yellow daffodils, is... you.

“Nice touch,” you nod approvingly, noting the symbolism there. “And such a romantic location, too. I take it there wasn't a shrine here before?”

“That's right,” Yoruichi confirms. “The original went up some years after Rosa's death.”

“Gin?” you inquire calmly. “I trust you brought the shovel?”

“Yes, ma'am!” he replies cheerfully, pitching the tool edge-first into the dirt where it sticks like a javelin. “Get to it, mister TV-medium!”

“Oh man,” Kanonji moans. “Oh man! This is total bad spirit stuff right here...”

“Don't worry about it,” you assure Kanonji, finally dropping the charade. “Just dig two shallow graves, and neither of 'em's going to be yours.”

“Then why were you leadin' me on!?” the human demands.

You wiggle your fingertips for emphasis. “Cause we're spirits, dipshit!”

“Oh, I get it... but wait, then how was he carryin' that shovel?”

“Less talking, more digging,” Bambietta insists.

“Someone should say something,” Rangiku muses quietly, watching Kanonji work. “I mean, we've come this far.”

“Bambi?” Yoruichi suggests.

Bambietta frowns at the casual use of her nickname. “Don't call me that. And if we're bein' honest I didn't even know them too well in the first place.”

“Better than we did,” you observe, waving your hands subtly at the first hole in the ground. “You can say something, right?”

The Sternritter sighs. “Neither Nianzol nor Driscoll were good people,” she begins. Not exactly a great place to start, you think. “Driscoll was a total fucking psychopath and Nianzol never made any damn sense even before we all went crazy. And to be honest, he creeped me out. None of us really ever talked to each other, and I know nothing about their personal lives because quite frankly I didn't give a shit at the time. But we were comrades nonetheless, and at the end of the day I still think we were all fighting for the same thing.”

“So maybe underneath all the bullshit there was once something meaningful to each of them. Maybe the people they once were deserved better, and maybe I could have done more to help them find their way again. But we'll never know that now. All we do know is that they gave us no real alternative but to take them down. I won't say we should mourn their deaths, but I do regret the lost opportunity.”

“It does seem rather pathetic that they're being buried in black trash bags, out here in the woods,” Yoruichi muses, “not even a real ceremony. But that said, unlike Rosa's grave here, I don't feel any reason to come back. Not out of respect, and certainly not out of regret.”

“You told me once that there aren't always two sides to a situation,” you remind her solemnly.

Once the bodies have been properly disposed of, Bambietta marks each with a simple stone a piece. No names, nothing flashy, nothing to identify who they once were. You take a moment to look around at the rows of stone markers, many of which are very much overgrown, wondering how many of them are the final resting places who served under Rosa Rosette's command at some point. Some of them no doubt found their way back here to be buried next to the commander who gave her life for theirs.

“Anyone else I'd know here, you reckon?” you ask nobody in particular. “Maybe someone I should pay respects to?”

“I've seen Ryūken's wife out here once,” Yoruichi recalls. “Kanae, I think her name is?”

“Then the old man's probably out here too,” you realize. “Probably buried closer to the front, he only died a few years ago. Cirrhosis of the liver.”

“Well, at least the ones we've captured still have a chance,” you reassure Bambietta, “so it's not unsalvageable. Before we leave I'd like to visit an old acquaintance.”

You lead the group around more or less blindly in the dark, until you find one of the few recent-looking graves in this whole place. On it is a familiar name, belonging to a man you first met on Okinawa during the height of the invasion there: Ishida Sōken.

“Was he a good man?” Bambietta asks, staring down at the grave. Like your own, the Ishida grave is marked by flowers growing wild around it, no doubt Kanae's doing. “I only know that brat grandson of his looked up to him.”

You nod. “Without a doubt. His methods were a little bit backwards, but his heart was definitely in the right place. He'd be sickened if he saw what your fellow Sternritter had been reduced to.”

“That's not saying much.”

“Alright, I've seen enough,” you conclude. “It's about time we got going.”

“One last thing,” Yoruichi thinks aloud, stopping your party just as Rangiku draws her zanpakuto to open the Senkaimon. “What about Arisawa? She seemed like she could use some official training.”

You consider the point: she and Ichigo had gone back home with the others, having seen to it they felt protected after the clash this evening, and you're almost certain Tatsuki herself has turned in for the night. But she got beaten pretty badly, and will likely be stinging from a loss so soon after gaining shinigami powers. She may even be regretting the decision, wondering if it was worthwhile in light of the realization that she'll have to re-learn how to use her powers to some extent.

“Got it,” Rangkiku nods, understanding that this means she's in charge of the transfer now. “I'll call you when it's all been sorted.”

“And Yoruichi? Please send the Kurosakis a message for me: that they should be aware of Gigi's abilities. Exhuming graves isn't my thing, but I have a bad feeling about that madwoman.”

Without a human in tow, you're able to reach your top speed and find Arisawa's home in mere minutes. The window is open, so you let yourself in through it and step quietly into her room. She doesn't seem to notice you at first, having evidently just fallen asleep, so you roll her covers back to expose her arm. Since she was fighting in her spirit body her physical one is still healthy, but her reiatsu is seriously depleted. Using kaidō casts a faint green glow over her face as you help solve that problem.

“What're you doin in my room?” she complains groggily, barely conscious. “Riku? The hell?”

“Doing you a favor,” you reply quietly. “Pop out of your physical body and I can heal your spirit body.”

“That's what's the worst off,” she agrees with a sigh. “Do it.”

You lift her up in bed and place a gikongan in her mouth, which lets her roll out of bed and onto the floor while her body remains sitting upright in bed.

“Claudia,” you order the replacement soul, “feign sleep for a normal amount of time. Since it's a weekend you can pretend to study. Avoid contact with anyone who might recognize a difference between you and Tatsuki here.”

Tatsuki's body bows politely. “Of course, ma'am.”

“Creepy. As. Shit.” Tatsuki observes. “My mom's working this weekend, so you should have no trouble. Just be sure to show up for dinner, and be polite.”

“Understood, young woman,” Claudia replies calmly before lying down.

After getting Tatsuki to sit still you carefully heal Tatsuki's remaining wounds. It takes several long minutes of careful work, but you manage the feat easily enough as none of the wounds on their own are life-threatening. “There we go. Good enough for what I've got in mind.”

“And what do you have in mind?”

“Well, no sense hanging around,” you sigh, standing up with a groan. Feels good after having crouched over your patient for god only knows how long. “Let's get out of here. Sleep tight, Tatsuki's body.”

“Could you not?” Tatsuki frowns.

“Never,” you reply, opening the garganta and waving in. “After you.”

You keep your speed relatively low to allow Tatsuki to keep pace comfortably, and make a mental note to work on her shunpō. In this form she should be easily capable...

… and your train of thought derails as you duck under the blade of a sword, almost purely on instinct.

“What quick reflexes!” your masked assailant commends you. “Truly befitting a Captain.”

“And you are?” you growl, drawing Tenkotsuki in a single, fluid motion and sweeping the arrancar's blade away.

“Arrancar number sixty-one, Rudbornn Chelute. I come here as fraccìon to the Tercera Espada, Lord Ulquirra Schiffer, with a proposal.”

“You have my interest,” you admit sternly. “You have ten seconds to convince me not to kill you right here, starting now.”

“Lord Ulquiorra would like to arrange a meeting on neutral ground between you and the Primera Espada, to discuss terms regarding the coming battles.”

“Is this guy for real?” Tatsuki asks, completely shocked at what she's hearing.

The arrancar, whose face is totally hidden behind an animalistic mask like some kind of strange horse's skull, chuckles. “Oh, I can assure you I am quite real. And more to the point, my offer is sincere. Would I have come here alone to meet with a Captain were that not the case?”

>Tell your master to fuck off, I don't want to talk to him or any of Aizen's little servants right now.

“There's no such thing as neutral ground,” you retort sharply, “only a position you choose and a position you don't. If anyone on your side is actually sincere about opening a line of dialogue you'll send them over on my terms, since I'm the only one involved who's shown any interest in observing the tradition of parlay.”

“Parlay?” Tatsuki asks.

“An old French word. Basically I don't try and take advantage of an enemy who just wants to talk. An old value, maybe even outdated, but it's the kind of civility I'd appreciate if the positions were flipped.”

“You would pass up such an opportunity?” Rudbornn asks skeptically, as if comparing your response to some mental database of your characteristics. “Such a dialogue may be in the best interests of your precious subordinates.”

“I refuse,” you reiterate more clearly. “I do not expect that Aizen's forces would pass up an opportunity to corner me alone. Tell Ulquiorra that if he wants to prove otherwise he'll have to do better than this to do it.”

The arrancar scoffs loudly. “Lord Aizen was correct, it seems. You shinigami truly are blind to the truth.”

“Even blind, I'd gladly take the head of a coward like your precious 'Lord' Aizen. You can tell him I said that.”

“You'll regret saying that,” Rudbornn sneers, easily discernible as such from the pure venom in his tone.

“Not likely. Now fuck off.”

The arrancar spins on his heel and marches off in frustration, creating his own reishi pathway as he goes. You half consider tailing him to figure out how it was he found you like this, but with Tatsuki along that seems less like a smart idea. Instead you continue on to the Seireitei, emerging on the grounds of the Ninth Division.

“You can sleep in my guest room,” you tell your new student. “We'll begin training at sunrise and continue till I tell you to stop, so get a good rest. You'll need it.”

“Thanks, Riku,” Tatsuki bows. “Or should that be Kusajishi-sensei?”

“Sensei would be fine,” you nod, testing the word as you say it and liking how it sounds.

You remain awake late into the night, pondering the situation over a cup of lukewarm tea. Your Commandos are recovering well enough, and Rangiku has informed you that the prisoner transfer went without incident. You did however hear that BG9's first few words caused quite a spectacular commotion, which you're kind of sorry you missed.

So deep in thought are you that you almost fail to notice two new presences in your office.

Spinning, you find that a familiar woman has seated herself on the floor next to an unfamiliar young man with blonde hair. Your fingertips instinctively find the hilt of your sword.

“What are you doing here, Neliel!?” you demand loudly even as the garganta behind the pair of arrancar snaps shut.

She frowns deeply, glancing at the floor. “Believe me, I'd rather be anywhere else. But orders are orders.”

“And who's the kid with the dumb grin?” you demand. “Another one of the Privaron espada?”

The boy looks up at you with an almost vacant stare. “Wonderweiss.... Wonderweiss Margela.”

“Primera Espada.”

“While I do appreciate that the Primera came here personally after all,” you admit, hand still lingering on your sword's hilt, “I must also admit I'm a bit surprised. What are the two of you here to discuss?”

The Primera looks awkwardly at Neliel, whose frown deepens into a scowl, and then he looks back at you. “She's not here to discuss anything. She got... demoted.”

“Demoted?” you ask.

“Demoted. For losing to you.”

“I was stripped of rank,” Neliel tells you, her voice full of bitterness as she continues to refuse direct eye contact. “I lost Pesche and Dondachakka as well, they were reassigned to my self-styled rival in the Espada. He beats them regularly, for no reason at all other than the fact that they're my friends.”

“She's a Primera. She doesn't get to have an opinion anymore,” Wonderweiss continues, his eyes still disturbingly unfocused. “But that's not why we're here. We're here to bring you a message from Lord Aizen.”

At the mention of the name, Neliel grimaces. It's hard to tell who she hates more passionately at the moment, you or him. Probably him, but only by a narrow margin.

“Go on.”

“The message...” Wonderweiss frowns.

“His army is ready for combat now,” Neliel continues slowly, as if prompting the Primera into remembering.

“That's right,” Wonderweiss nods, as if having suddenly recalled some unimportant piece of trivia. “Now that the undesirables are gone we can attack at any time, at full strength. Lord Aizen says he plans to crush you shinigami with an overwhelming power.”

“This isn't a parlay,” you observe quietly. “Really, it just comes off as saber-rattling. If he's ready, why doesn't he just attack?”

“He has an offer,” Wonderweiss continues. “Become our prisoner, and he'll do his best to ensure that as many shinigami survive as possible! He'll even guarantee that three will definitely survive, and you can name which ones you want!”

The look on Neliel's face shifts somewhat, betraying obvious discomfort. Perhaps she wasn't told the full content of the message? Either way, she seems almost... offended.

Okay, so Wonderweiss isn't QUITE as retarded as he was in canon, but he still seems a little scatterbrained. Nel is here as a secretary to keep him on the right mental track, I guess, and man does her situation suck right now, but given Pesche and Dondachakka are basically hostages there's not a whole lot we can do about that.

“So your offer,” you snarl, physically shaking with barely controlled rage, “is to spare the lives of the people who I love in exchange for betraying all of the values and goals we share? To betray everyone I know? Because that's sure as hell what it sounds like you're suggesting.”

“It's the best deal you can expect,” the Primera responds casually.

“Then here's the best deal you can expect!” you roar, rising to your feet and drawing Tenkotsuki from her sheath. Rosa doesn't even need to be prompted to release, you're furious enough that she does it on her own. You can feel pure, overwhelming rage frothing over, not just something you feel burning in your heart but actually a palpable force outside your body. Neliel stares at you in shock, while Wonderweiss' face remains totally impassive. Like a blank slate incapable of showing fear or surprise.

Get out of my office, you scum-sucking piece of shit!” you shout, the force of your voice shattering windows and shaking your home to its very foundation. “Get out now before I redecorate this whole fucking compound with your blood! And tell that fuckface you call 'Master' that the only way he'll lay a finger on my friends, family, or subordinates is over my cold dead corpse and the corpses of his whole fucking army, because THAT'S WHAT IT'S GONNA TAKE!

After a moment of silence, the effects of your own voice still ringing loud in your ears, the Primera stands. “Then I look forward to our fight, Captain.”

“Soon.”

With that pronouncement he opens a garganta and steps through it, gesturing for Neliel to follow. You raise one hand as she stands, however.

“You wait here,” you command. “I'm not done with you yet.”

“Whatever,” Wonderweiss shrugs as Neliel sits awkwardly where she's been doing so this whole time. “She knows what happens if she doesn't come back.”

With that, the Primera makes his exit.

“Why are you fighting for these assholes?”

Neliel stares at you angrily. “You heard what he said. Pesche and Dondachakka...”

“Served you well, I take it,” you interrupt. “They were loyal to you. But you have to consider what they would rather see: you continuing to fight for the ideals that won them over, or caving to Aizen over threats to their lives.”

“You failed them once already when you allowed Aizen to use them as hostages,” you tell Neliel, and you can immediately see that the words sting as she hears them. “What you do next is your choice and yours alone, but I sincerely hope you choose not to fail them a second time.”

“What would you have done?” she asks morosely, staring resolutely away from you. “In my place?”

“I'd have protected them or died fighting,” you tell her, without any hesitation. “The wife I married, the children I raised, the family that adopted me, the allies and subordinates who support me... they would all do the same for me.”

“And would they sacrifice your life for their goals? Are your bonds so weak?”

You shake your head dismissively. “It's because of how strong our bonds are that they know I wouldn't hold it against them. So while they might pursue every other option first, yes. They would probably trade my life to achieve what we're all prepared to give our own lives for.”

“That's sick.”

“That's what being a shinigami is about,” you inform her. “We expect to some day give our lives to defeat an evil worth giving everything to defeat. Far better than being so servile as to follow a master who would gladly kill you as soon as you've lost your purpose to him.”

You watch as your words swirl through Neliel's mind, and tears come to her eyes. She may want nothing more than to protect her two subordinates... she really does have a soft heart, in a lot of ways. But a leader can't afford to have such a soft heart as to prevent her from making difficult decisions. If there's some goal in her mind more important than the life of any one hollow, she'll either have to find the strength of conviction to sacrifice her subordinates or choose to abandon that goal to protect them.

“It's your choice,” you repeat, “and yours alone. I honestly wish I could help you... I wish I'd found you before Aizen did, like I did Halibel and Starrk.”

“But you can!” she insists quietly, staring up at you with tears still in her eyes. “We can rescue Pesche and Dondachakka! I could never do it on my own, but I'm sure someone like you...”

>I may be able to arrange that.

>Neliel, what I want you to do is to take deep breaths, and calm down. Being this emotional won't save Pesche and Dondachakka and rushing headlong into the fight blind to any sense of logic. There WILL be an opportunity to rescue them. But not now. Not by playing into Aizen's hands.

Man I really don't know, offering to sneak into Silbern to smuggle the clowns out sorta invalidates the point we just made, but on the other hand, Nel isn't a bad person and she's kind of been fucked over in this timeline, arguably harder than she ever was in true canon.

I want to help her, but sneaking into Silbern after they have literally just declared war is insane.

I'm just gonna go with my heart on this one and say that it might just be crazy enough to work and then deeply regret it in hindsight when everything goes wrong

The fact that Aizen sent her here means that's exactly what he's hoping we'll do. Unless she knows something Aizen doesn't have a chance of predicting, which is nigh-impossible, Riku attempting an infiltration mission would be one of the dumbest things she could do. Especially with his several powerhouse anti-espionage subordinates.

The answer is no.
>>
>>706426
Yeah, sorry it is too late to send a rescue operation now, not when war has been declared...

I doubt Aizen is sabre rattling. All those previous invasions were both the scouting force in attempt to probe our defenses and is also a way of him cleaning house so he'll have a more organized and efficient army for his "ethnic cleansing" because he's that much of an asshole.

“I can't.”

“Why won't you?” she demands. “Have I slighted you somehow? You were willing to help Bambieta of all people, but you won't help me save my friends?”

You frown. It honestly hurts you to have to say this. “The whole reason Aizen sent you here was to try and bait this sort of response. He wants me to try and do something reckless, to weaken the Seireitei before his own invasion. That's why despite wanting to help, I really can't. Too much is riding on what I do, and it's too late now for ill-conceived rescue missions.”

“I can offer you some protection of course, and I can let you in on our planning sessions, but...”

“What's going on?” Tatsuki demands, clearly exhausted and half-awake. “Why were you screaming?”

“Someone annoying showed up,” you tell her. “But I handled it. Go back to sleep.”

“Like I was saying there's a limit to what I can actually do for you. I can't work actual miracles, but I'll do what I can.”

Neliel's tears fall freely as she seems to make a decision, her voice straining to even give words to her regrets in so low a voice. “I'm sorry Pesche, Dondachakka. Just... try to hang on a little longer, okay?”

You offer the poor arrancar an awkward hug, which she returns with an almost pathetic desperation. “Don't cry over it, don't let it weaken you. Focus only on what you're going to do to help make sure this decision wasn't for nothing.”

With your one free hand you search through your desk drawer for a small bottle, within which are powerful sleeping aids furnished by Yoruichi. She knows that sometimes you have trouble without them, the stress of work and a long-running secret war weighing heavily and ceaselessly on your mind. Two pills tumble out onto the desk.

“These will help you sleep,” you tell her. “For security purposes I'll have to handcuff you as well, but it's only for tonight. We'll sort out the details tomorrow, so until then there are spare cushions in the closet. You can sleep on those.”

The arrancar silently swallows the pills dry, and after you cuff her she lies down on the cushions and slowly loses consciousness.

For a while, you watch her sleep. You really do regret not having found her first... it really makes you wonder what might have been, had you not brought Starrk and Halibel and the Tres into the fold the way you did. Had things been different they might be in just as bad a position as Neliel is, having been forced to knowingly abandon her only friends to an uncertain fate to pursue some greater goal she's been too distraught to explain. Though perhaps this way won't be to anyone's advantage by the end, depending on how things go. It's really just not useful to think about things that way.

You almost don't notice yet another intruder.

“Who is it this time?” you sigh in exasperation. “What are you supposed to be?”

The woman who stands before you has pale, blonde hair in a ponytail folded close to her head, with eyes a deep and almost uniform shade of purple. And you can tell, that as weak as she may be...

“She possesses shinreiryoku,” Tenkotsuki confirms.

"Have I come at a bad time?" the strange woman asks. "If so I can come back later... who is your strange guest?"

“Who are you?” you ask again, honestly unsure of yourself. “You're the weirdest guest I have here right now.”

The woman with the purple eyes gets on her knees, bowing low until her forehead touches the ground and remaining that way for several seconds. In doing so, you notice for the first time the pack slung across her back: like that common to the Fourth Division. Then she raises her head to address you. “Actually... we share a name, Lady Kusajishi. I am Riku, three generations descended from Susano'o. I have been sent to swear myself to your service, and to convey a package.”

She lowers her head again, this time not rising.

You scratch your head in confusion. “Get up, please. Sit down at the desk and we'll talk.”

After a moment's hesitation, 'Riku' does as you request, sitting uncomfortably. She also refuses to meet your eyes.

“What's going on here?” you question.

“You possess one fragment of the August Kami known as Inari, a great and powerful divine being. A third-generation such as myself is far below your standing.”

“Then forgetting that bit,” you grumble, not liking the implications behind that statement, “you said I had a package?”

“It is said this was of the utmost importance,” she tells you, producing a small bundle from inside her pack and holding it out with two outstretched hands, stubbornly staring straight down at your desk rather than looking at her. “Please accept it!”

Inside are three small objects: a wooden masu box, used for measuring rice, a long and ornate stem pipe with a feather hanging from the alabaster head, and a small knife with a damascene blade and ivory handle. Though pretty in their own right, the more significant fact is that each of these three objects doubtless carries within it divine reiryoku, each traceable to its previous owner.

“These are gifts from Coyote, Inari, and Artemis,” Riku tells you, still looking down and away from you. “I'm told it comes with a two-word message.”

“And the message is?”

“Don't lose.”

Some questions you didn't answer from last thread:
>Is "flirting/Impressing Mirai" Starrk's new hobby?
>Does Starrk have any new techniques/skills/tricks aside from his Cero Wolves or his Gran Rey Machine-gun? I can easily see him using his pistols to fire individual Bala rounds, Apacci's patented Bala Buckshot, or just pull off trickshots with his guns. Which brings to mind, has Starrk seen any John Woo films? I would love to recommend him to watch Equilibrium, but that film comes out in 2002
>BG9: Head! I need a body. Head! Not just any body. Head! You know I'm just a head... Heeead!~
>C-46 treats the thing like a rebellion, not a war || How do they think it's not a war? The opposing side(s) has enough cumulative manpower/firepower to potentially take down Seiteirei's Police force AND THEN SOME. Do they even have a threshold policy for declaring full-scale war aside from another C-46 massacre? Although granted, the fact that Riku and the 9th have such good response times despite the captain getting away with "technically legal activities" which BENEFITED Seireitei may be a factor in their decision making.

>Is "flirting/Impressing Mirai" Starrk's new hobby?
Something like that.

He doesn't have a lot of "tricks", but the ones he has are pretty impressive.
>BG9: Head! I need a body. Head! Not just any body. Head! You know I'm just a head... Heeead!~
Humor not detected.
>C-46 treats the thing like a rebellion, not a war || How do they think it's not a war?
Considering it a "war" gives Aizen a degree of implicit legitimacy, where if they maintain the narrative that it's another internal rebellion there isn't that sense. It's mostly a political/PR measure.
>Had Yamamoto not died, we would have had more time to prepare for the endgame right?
Making a few assumptions there.

You stare blankly at this strange new visitor, who claims to be a distant descendant of Susano'o and still refuses to look you in the eye. You gather it's some sort of class difference you were unaware existed among Japanese deities, where the descendants who inherit progressively weaker reiryoku are discouraged from even looking at their 'superiors'. And since one third of you is a manifestation of the god Inari that technically places you at such a level.

The other 'Riku' remains motionless, holding out in her hands a pipe, a small wooden box, and a knife. She could probably kneel here all night waiting for you to accept the gifts, which were no doubt intended to furnish you with the shinreiryoku you need to accelerate your Bankai's development. To hurry things along you take the gifts from her hands, and her head remains bowed.

“Please stop,” you sigh, a little unnerved at the situation. “All this bowing and refusing to make eye contact just feels weird. I'm not a goddess or anything, I just borrow the power of one from time to time. So cut it out.”

She attempts to comply, looking up and initially meeting your eyes and giving you a good look at her again. Her face is deeply expressive, like that of any other human or shinigami could be, though her eyes being solid purple is a little disquieting. But she can't hold that eye contact at all.

“Chin up,” you instruct her, “just focus on my shoulder if you have to.”

“Yes, ma'am,” she bows gently, rising and carefully positioning her chin at what she considers a 'normal' height. She seems much more comfortable now that you've relieved her of the obligation to look you in the eyes.

“I'm sorry, it's just that looking a divinity in the eyes is usually... discouraged, rather than encouraged. It's a very old tradition.”

“So what exactly are you?” you ask quietly.

“The word for what I am is 'tenchi', taken from the characters for heaven and blood,” this new Riku explains thoughtfully. “And please forgive me if I sound impertinent, but I would prefer that you refer to me as such.”

“What, as just Tenchi?” you ask incredulously. “Like calling my nephew Japanese, or calling me half-foreigner?”

“We share a name,” she reminds you. “If it alleviates any confusion or awkwardness I would be happy to do away with it, and it held no particular meaning to me in the first place. In fact I only got it because it was...”

“...unisex?” you smile, thinking back to your own 'childhood' in the Rukongai. “I'm the same way.”

>If that's what you're more comfortable with I'll oblige you.

“Why do we have to settle on what I should call you?” you ask, puzzled at the implications. “Does that mean you intend to stay here now that you've made your delivery?”

“I apologize for coming uninvited, ma'am,” she bows much more subtly. “But I am under orders to keep a watch on you. My reiatsu may be weak, but my senses are quite keen by any reasonable standards. Even when I'm asleep. That was why I was selected.”

She's being quite open about this, you think to yourself. “Who selected you?”

“The Royal Guard,” she replies immediately. “Specifically, Ichibē. I'm not sure he quite understands, but for a tenchi to lie to a deity, particularly when asked a direct question, would be unthinkable.”

“So he thought he was picking the best spy...”

“...but in reality I was probably the worst choice, yes,” she smiles. “Technically I should also follow any reasonable order you give me, though that's not compulsory.”

“If I ordered you to send him the most unhelpful and vague reports possible without tipping him off that you're doing so?” you ask, having to stifle a chuckle.

“That could be arranged, ma'am.”

You nod to yourself, satisfied. “Alright, I think I can work with that.”

“Do you believe who he intends to do you harm, ma'am?”

“Probably at some point,” you admit quietly, “though it may well be many years in the future. Who knows if it'll ever even come to that.”

“I hope it doesn't. Such infighting serves no one.”

“I know, right?”

You rise to your feet, tiptoeing around Neliel as she sleeps with the best of your Onmitsu training keeping each footfall as close to silent as can be reasonably expected. There are still enough cushions available to fix a makeshift mattress for this new Riku, and you offer it to her with a wave.

“I'll arrange permanent sleeping quarters for you tomorrow when I have time,” you yawn. “But for now I need my beauty sleep, Tenchi.”

You frown for a moment as Riku lies down and closes her eyes immediately. “Tenchi... Riku... Ten... Ri... Tenri? That might be a good nickname for you. It'd be the characters for 'Divine Law', and for the former capital of Japan.”

“Tenri?” the young tenchi-woman repeats, before smiling to herself. “Tenri. I like that.”

The next morning comes entirely too early, with someone nudging your ribs with the end of a scabbard.

“Riku! It's sunup already!”

Your eyes peel open, and you glare at Tatsuki as if trying to kill her with your gaze. “Shit happened. Give me a few minutes to wake up.”

You stand up, and tatsuki averts her eyes as you dress. “It's not like I'm naked, Tatsuki. I swear sometimes, Yoruichi's right. You kids these days are so sheltered.”

You drag yourself out to the garden and motion to a smooth rock. “Sit.”

Tatsuki follows your orders, and you show her how to position her zanpakuto to meditate properly. After a few minutes, you tap her on the thigh. She tries to ignore you, so you tap again, and again, and continue tapping until her eyes fly open.

“Quit bothering me!” she insists.

You frown back at her. “If you were doing it properly you wouldn't have noticed. Nothing on the outside matters in the slightest, all you need is your own internal focus.”

“I'll be back in a few hours to check on your progress.”

We usually aren't in a hurry when we use communications unlike when we are in combat. Having a hudden ace attack spell seems like a better use for that tattoo.

then again an ace up our sleave is kinda what tenkotsuki already does.
>>
>>710162
That's not how spellcasting works in the setting. The only reason Tenteikura is a candidate for being improved in this way is because it involves scrawling an array of sorts onto the caster's arm, which is usually done as part of casting the spell. It's only temporary however, which is what a tattoo would change.
>>
>>710172
>>710162
Tenteikura if I remember is one the only spells that require the caster to actually draw tattoo patterns of some kind in order to prep before casting.

Upstairs, you can feel your two guests stirring.

When you reach your office the spare cushions have already been stowed away neatly, but it seems like only one of the two women was responsible for that. Neliel's eyes are puffy and red, and are barely focused from a fitful night's sleep, while Tenri seems calm and perfectly focused with a light smile tugging at her lips.

“Good morning, ma'am!” she greets you. “Shall I make some tea?”

“One cup for me, one for Neliel, and one for my Lieutenant. She should be putting in an appearance. If you want a cup too feel free.”

“I feel like hell,” Neliel groans, slumping over the low table. “What have I done?”

“You made a tough call,” you tell her. “But if it's any consolation, I think you made the right decision.”

“I don't even know you!” she protests.

“I've taken rather good care of your privaron,” you observe with a shrug. “I'm no monster. Aizen however? The jury's out, but initial findings seem to suggest he's the worst bastard you could ever have the misfortune of crossing.”

“The privaron are still here?” Neliel asks, perking up a little as a cup of tea is placed on a coaster in front of her. “Are they... you know, well?”

“As well as you'd expect given the circumstances,” you admit wearily. “One's lost her powers, one's lost all feeling from the waist down, and the other seems content with his lot in life.”

“Who's the third?” she frowns.

“Gantenbainne.”

“Can I see them?”

You spare a glance at the wall clock opposite your desk, and decide that you probably have time. “I think that can be arranged.”

With an outstretched hand you begin casting Tenteikūra, intending to simply leave it active for the rest of the day. First you contact Tia.

“Halibel, I need you to do a favor,” you sigh. “I need you to take an arrancar who recently surrendered to visit the Privaron Espada. I doubt she'll be a problem. Please meet me at my office.”

The only offensive spell that can be tattooed (as far as Bleach-verse is concerned) is the one used by Hisagi in canon. And at the power levels that we're operating in, that's woefully inadequate.

And please do some research before slinging unsubstantiated suggestions. You can Google the spell that's being discussed.

A few minutes later, your friend arrives in your office and climbs the stairs to greet you. She glances cautiously at Neliel, who stares back at her with a similarly evaluating gaze. You're not sure, but they may have taken an immediate dislike of each other even without having spoken: probably because each can guess at the sort of life the other has lived, and finds something they resent there. Neliel her opposite's lack of direct action over the many long years she's been secretly allied with the Seireitei, and Tia a vague sense of disgust at what she probably sees as a tendency towards servility.

“Easy there,” you tell Tia quietly, holding up a palm. “She just wants to check on her subordinates. You'd be worried too if Aizen had captured Apacci or someone.”

“No, I would not,” Tia corrects you quietly. “It would never have happened in the first place.”

“But it did happen,” Neliel counters with a sharp glare.

“Because of your choices.”

“Stop,” you growl. “Tia, what's gotten into you this morning?”

“Apologies. I was out of line.”

“The part that hurts worst is that you're not entirely wrong,” Neliel sighs, brushing idly at her hair with her fingers. “But the last thing I want right now is to argue the point. What I want is to visit my subordinates.”

“Then I should warn you not to expect a warm greeting.”

“Will this be okay?” you ask Tia.

She shrugs. “I've said my piece.”

As the two leave, you briefly contact Starrk to make sure that nothing unfortunate comes of any future arguments between them.

“Tenri, my senior staff are all recovering from wounds,” you inform the tenchi as she listens and nods thoughtfully. “Please go and introduce yourself to them. Let them know my whereabouts and that I plan to return around noon. Rangiku and I will be at a Captains' meeting.”

“Understood, ma'am” she bows deeply. “I look forward to meeting your Commandos, they have quite a reputation.”

On your way out you pass a cup of tea into Rangiku's hands and grab her by the arm. “Come on, Rangiku, we've got a meeting to go to.”

“Who made the tea?”

You set your own cup aside, having finished drinking it. “Tenri.”

“Tenri? Who's Tenri?”

“Long story.”

Your fellow Captains seem to be in mostly good shape, considering the recent string of battles they've been wrapped up in. You're grateful that the Royal Guard seem to have allowed those Captains they insisted on training to meet like this one more time, because the information you have to share will probably light a fire under their collective asses.

You take your position next to Hitsugaya and Kaoru, and wait for Shunsui to start the meeting. It doesn't take long.

“Well, I see we're all here!” he greets you jovially. “Now, where to begin...”

“I've had reports from after our recent battles that Aizen's forces may be more or less ready to attack,” you interrupt in a stern tone. “Though of course I can't verify it.”

“Good grief,” Shunsui sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose. “That man sure knows how to kill a buzz, even when he's not around to do it in person.”

“What do you actually think that means though?” Yoruichi asks thoughtfully. “Organization and combat readiness are two different things. Only the latter suggests a shift to a true attack posture.”

Hitsugaya shakes his head. “What do you mean by posture? Do you mean to imply that these were't attacks?”

“Even these most recent engagements felt more like the result of a long-term purge,” you explain. “We believe Aizen's forces are now down to ten 'Espada' class arrancar, each an adjuchas or vasto lorde in its previous incarnation, and a matching Sternritter: likely because betrayal by one means the other is on hand as an enforcer.”

You ponder the best possible way to explain to your peers that you've had a meeting with Aizen's Primera without informing anyone, and decide that full disclosure would probably mean the fewest long-term problems.

“I was intercepted on the way back from the living world last night,” you frown, recalling the late-night developments. “By an arrancar, who I ran across in the dangai. He told me that two of the Espada wanted to discuss terms for a 'coming battle', and I told him to fuck off. In fact I told him to challenge the Primera Espada to meet on my terms instead.”

“Let me guess,” Yoruichi sighs, deeply concerned. “He did.”

You nod. “He did. Brought Neliel Tu Odelschwank with him for no other reason than to embarrass her too.”

“And what did he have to say?” Shunsui asks curiously, his eyes narrowing at you.

“He told me that if I were to follow him they'd spare my loved ones.”

“And you told him to fuck off,” Yoruichi guesses.

“So loud all the windows in my Division broke.”

“So that's what that was,” Hitsugaya nods sagely. “I was wondering about that burst of reiatsu. I actually figured you were venting your anger or something, not that you were running off one of Aizen's Espada.”

“You really think I have that much anger?”

“Which one of us has a split personality that's literally her rage?”

“Fair. But the point stands, there was an overt threat of violence there even if he was clearly trying to separate me from the Gotei 13.”

It's Urahara who finally speaks up, though Gin is quietly scowling to himself. “Well, I don't know about that miss Ninth Division Captain.”

“Gin? You've got that look.”

Your son's frown deepens. “Captain, was this Primera of yours a kind of a larger fellow? Bushy white mustache an' a scar across his right eye? Mask fragments kinda like a crown?”

“No,” you shake your head. “A scrawny little blonde kid with no attention span and a mask fragment like a girly little tiara, why?”

Gin sighs. “Uh-oh. Seems Aizen's found himself an arrancar even nastier than King Spooky. I had a feelin' the old fart wouldn'tve left without getting' in a scrap.”

Yoruichi's eyes narrow as she recognizes who Gin's likely talking about. “You mean the self-proclaimed King of Hueco Mundo is only the number two?”

“Sure seems that way.”

“An interesting point,” Unohana admits quietly, but I believe Captain Urahara made quite a claim just now as well. Would he care to elaborate?”

“Well, I'll admit spent a few sleepless nights considering Aizen's likely strategic aims prior to committing his forces in full. Narrowed it down to twenty-seven different plans, each requiring a certain amount of time. And so to estimate his time frame I averaged how long I felt it would take him to complete each task given Mayuri's help, and weighed based on perceived likelihood that he would prioritize each.”

“And what the hell'd you get outta all that thinkin'?” Zaraki grumbles. “I got bored just listenin' to you talk about it.”

“It got me an average: early to mid December,” Urahara gazes sternly at Shunsui from under his dumb hat, his tone suddenly quite serious. It's a sharp contrast from his normal attitude of nonchalance, even silliness. “By my best estimates we have until then to prepare ourselves. Gin? Care to comment?”

Your son nods solemnly. “That sounds about right. Aizen's not the type to let anythin' shake him off a plan, failures or successes. Just cause Old Man Yama's outta the picture don't mean he's gonna rush. He's just gonna use the extra time he'da spent worryin' about that to do somethin' else.”

“It does sound a lot like last night was a ploy to try and get Riku out of the picture as well,” Yoruichi agrees quietly. “To press an advantage, not as a prelude to an immediate attack.”

Anon, although it's highly unlikely, but Reigai invasions effectively isolated Seireitei from additional outside invasions. The three femritters wouldn't have gotten stuck trying to rescue Bambi had the Reigai invasion not included Dangai Dimension Scrambling. Speaking of which, I do have a thought in regards to a god we encountered waaaay back. Is the dangai within purview of Amatsu no mikaboshi? He is in charge of primordial chaos and the Dangai is a chaotic void between spiritual planes.

“Good,” you mutter, “because Aizen's not the only one with his sights set on us.”

“There is still the issue of the reigai,” Komamura agrees.

Suì Fēng crosses her arms and frowns at the reminder. “They have remained a thorn in our collective side for too long already. Urahara, how have you not isolated their base of operations?”

“They may be operating out of a valley of screams,” Urahara theorizes, scratching lightly at his stubble. “Which means it's far more difficult to detect them than if they were just operating within the dangai itself. There would be no sensors in place.”

“So we have to sit here and wait?” Suì Fēng presses.

“Short of using that poor Senna girl as bait? Yes, that means we have to sit here and wait.”

“Or until they see an opportunity to act,” Shunsui muses.

Yoruichi sighs. “Like when Captains are either absent or spread out training.”

“Precisely.”

“So you're asking us to abandon our defense of the Seireitei?” Byakuya asks quietly. It's clear from his tone of voice the little lord doesn't like the idea, that to him it strays perilously close to dereliction of duty. “So that the Captains who remain may take on all of the remaining Reigai on their own?”

“That is what I'm suggesting, yes,” Shunsui replies, a grim and determined grin spreading across his face. “Why? Don't you think us capable?”

“We already know better than to chase down our own clones,” you add.

Yoruichi is quick to agree. “And the clones of a lot of us who're staying are dead already.”

“What're you seein those bunch for?” Kenpachi scoffs. “I thought yer skills were already perfect or somethin?”

“I'm trying to get something back that belongs to my family,” you reply coolly. “Personal business. You know how it is.”

“Not really. I just don't give enough of a shit.”

You grin. “And that's my favorite thing about you.”

“So were there any other late-night visitors you'd like to inform us of, Captain Kusajishi?” Unohana glances in your direction. “Aizen, perhaps? Jesus? Elvis?”

Yoruichi stifles a snicker. Such loyalty.

But at the same time you did have two more visitors, didn't you?

“Some of you may have felt that the Privaron Espada Neliel Tu Odelschwanck has defected, and remains in Ninth Division custody. She had something of a nervous breakdown over her subordinates' fate at Aizen's hands, so I have my friends looking out for her needs. I'll bring you a full report on her condition and mental state when I have it.”

“And details of her experiences with Aizen's faction” Komamura presses. “I assume you will be conducting a thorough interrogation?”

“In time, Sajin. Sometimes an arrancar's just not in a place where pressing for information is viable. If I make a careless decision it could only serve to cause even worse mental and emotional collapse. I've learned the value of discretion, so if you want to get intelligence out of her it'll come at the pace I dictate.”

“Understood?”

You briefly consider how much to tell the other Captains, and settle on a compromise position.

“I now have a tenchi living at my Division barracks,” you explain, to the befuddlement of most. It's Yoruichi who translates.

“A term for a spirit with divine heritage, but less than a half or quarter-deity.”

You nod. “She goes by the name Tenri, and she was sent to keep tabs on me by the Monk.”

“That's pretty damn dirty,” Kenpachi grumbles.

Hitsugaya is quick to agree. “I assume she was specially selected?”

“She was,” you tell them both. “For her keen senses... even when she's asleep, she claimed. But it seems he made a miscalculation regarding the divine caste system.”

“She considers Tenkotsuki to be a full divine,” Yoruichi posits, turning several heads. Including Urahara's for that matter.

“Yes, I can see how that might backfire,” Kisuke thinks aloud. “I take it she refuses to lie to you because of that fact?”

“I'll be checking on her, but yes. It seems that way.”

Kisuke smiles at you, which is never a good sign. “Good, good. Now that we're done, could I trouble you for something?”

“You can try.”

“I... don't even know how to respond to that!” you admit, holding your own head. “Why would you even need to ask that question? You're not planning to do anything weird to him, right?”

“Depends on your definition of weird.”

Yoruichi sighs, actually slumping forward where she stands. “Sometimes I regret having recommended you for Captaincy, you know that Kisuke?”

“Okay, so what's the idea?”

“From what I can tell your prisoner's shut off parts of his own brain,” Kisuke immediately launches into his justification. “Well, you can't just undo that sort of measure. Those parts of his brain are shut off for good, they'll never again be good for anything but taking up space.”

“So why not put them to more constructive use?”

“You're talking about taking tissue samples from a living brain?” Unohana asks, seemingly aghast at the suggestion. “That quincy is a living being, Captain. You do remember that, do you not?”

“I do,” Kisuke scowls. “And so are all the other quincy in his position who are aging well beyond the normal limits of the human body. But if I can take a sample from BG9's brain and reproduce those samples, I can further refine treatments for that condition! Think of it this way, if I tried it again on Miss Basterbinne and it failed this time, she'd be dead. There's no recovery from that. But if I try a slight variation on cultured tissue and it fails, all we're out is the time and effort needed to create that sample.”

Kisuke turns, addressing his final plea to you personally.

“It may seem a bit morbid to some of you, but to the scientific mind it's not just the most efficient course of action: any alternative is unconscionable.”

So the brain tissue samples Kisuke will be taking is something akin to, say, the flesh and bone that are beyond salvaging around an amputee's wound?

Or is it more like a cripple's limb being fair game since it's not in use?

“You'll have to ask him,” you cross your arms. “Run it past the patient himself, get his consent. And if he's not cogent you can ask Bambietta. If you can get their permission then you'll have my permission.”

“Then good luck with your own endeavors, Lady Riku,” he bows slightly to you. “I'm not sure how this 'BG9' character will respond, though I feel Miss Basterbinne will find the idea palatable.”

“I'm sure she will.”

“So if that's all we have to discuss, I see no reason to keep any of you here,” Shunsui concludes. “Captain Kusajishi, please give my regards to the various Royal Guards.”

On your way out Yoruichi catches your attention, waving you over to where she's been speaking with Little Bee. The latter bows stiffly before walking outside to wait.

“So what are you hiding from the rest of them?”

You sigh quietly, waving her closer. “Gifts from Coyote, Inari, and Artemis. They're helping me evolve my Bankai.”

“That was thoughtful of them. Come by my place after you speak with the Royal Guard, we'll work out how this is supposed to work.”

“I need to go back to my Division actually,” you admit, “to check on Tatsuki's progress. So you'll have to meet me there.”

“I think I can clear some time in my schedule,” she tells you, brushing the back of her finger affectionately against your jaw.

The Royal Guard are still operating out of the Fourth Division's grounds for the time being despite Unohana's aggravation at their presence: they've just been mostly hunkered down in there or busy with other Captains, desperate to avoid dealing with her directly. As it happens you find the woman you're looking for rather quickly, near the top of the giant stone pillar they crashed to the Seireitei in. Shutara is sitting in what looks like half of a silken cocoon, quietly reading a book.

“Sorry to interrupt,” you tell her quietly, “but I hear you've kept a hold of Kūkaku's arm. The one with the Ōken in it.”

The much older woman shuts the book and glances up at you. “You want to absorb the shinreiryoku in the Ōken to strengthen your Bankai?”

“That's right, and then she can have it back. Everyone wins.”

"Not possible," Shutara informs you, setting the book aside. "Sorry, but to take the shinreiryoku you'll need to destroy the limb."

"So you're telling me I have to chose between my sister getting her arm back and evolving my Bankai to fight Aizen?"

"That's about the size of it."

You do however recall seeing something, a part of her costume: false arms. Could that be the solution?

>Then we'll cut a deal. You supply a prosthetic, I get the shinreiryoku, I owe you a favor.

“So we'll propose a deal,” you begin working out the details in your head, unwilling to concede defeat. “You supply one of those prosthetic limbs to my sister, I take the shinreiryoku in her original arm since she'll probably never rejoin the Royal Guard, and I suppose I owe you a favor.”

“But we'll need to run it past her.”

“That can be arranged,” she nods, and you find yourselves surrounded by whirling white ribbons. In a moment you find yourself before Kūkaku herself, who sets aside the long stem pipe she was apparently smoking before.

“Ganju!” she shouts over her shoulder. “We've got visitors! Make some tea!”

“Who is it, sis? I didn't hear anyone...”

Ganju stops in the doorway, and the goofy smile never leaves his face. Instead he takes a half step backwards and slides the door shut without a single word. You can hear his heavy footfalls all the way down the hall, where he presumably gets to work in the kitchen.

If he thought it'd help to scream, he probably would have.

“So what're you doin' here, Shutara?” your sister frowns, seemingly unimpressed at the presence of a Royal Guard in her home. “And why so sudden?”

“I brought your arm,” Shutara explains, seemingly producing a limb from a silken pod you didn't even realize she was carrying. Fog rolls out of the opened pod in trailing wisps, and the air in the room carries a bit of a chill to it. “I wanted to explain the situation.”

“Please do.”

“Thank you. As you know we cannot allow someone to gain access to an Ōken if they're not in the Royal Guard. But Captain Kusajushi can already enter the royal realm, and taking your old Ōken will strengthen her Bankai.”

“I know all that,” Kūkaku grumbles. “What aren't you telling me yet?”

“Reclaiming the shinreiryoku will destroy your limb. This is why we kept your arm in stasis for so long.”

“Shutara can create prosthetics” you remind your sister. “She seems willing to do one for you if you want one.”

Kūkaku takes a puff on her pipe and blows the smoke slowly out from between her lips. She's thinking about it...

“Okay, deal. Take the arm, Riku. Do what you have to... so far as I'm concerned you've done as right by me as anyone could.”

Hmm, I don't really agree with that. I do kinda agree in the sense that the challenges we face and, obviously, Aizen as grand antagonist and such are relatively set. However, the decisions made in each scene and specifically how we treat certain situations and especially character interactions still feel like they have a lot of agency. Even if we ignore the (natural) indication of anons to be nice to characters they like/they think could be useful, which isn't exactly Queen's fault if that's predictable, there have still been many confrontations that could very reasonably have played out differently, many relationships that could be weaker or stronger, and so on. I mean, Neliel's situation feels like one of those for example. Just because it's not full freeform RP with incredibly mutable characters and relationships doesn't mean there's anything like railroading - rather than Queen setting limitations arbitrarily, most of them feel enforced by relatively close adherence to the original setting and characterizations which, yes, does limit things somewhat compared to an original quest or the like.

You can't say that it feels right to destroy Kūkaku's arm right in front of her, so you decide that it's probably for the best not to drain the shinreiryoku here and now. Instead you'll do so once you have a more firm grasp of how this process even works, and can do it without offending anyone.

“I'll deal with this later,” you sigh. “If Urahara's right we have plenty of time. Shutara, please fit my sister here for a prosthesis. I'll simply have to owe you for the trouble.”

“As you wish,” Shutara nods. “I can understand not wanting to continue with the process just yet, and a favor is fine in terms of reimbursement.”

“Good. Then sis?”

“Lady Riku?” Kūkaku asks, raising an eyebrow.

“I'd like you to do me a favor, while I'm here.”

About half an hour later you step out into the late-morning sun in the middle of the Rukongai's first district, rubbing your wrist. Your sister, ever the talented artist, has at your request placed a tattoo on your left forearm in white ink, where it would hardly be noticed even if it weren't usually covered up by an arm guard. You wish it could have gone somewhere even less noticeable, but its function placed a limitation on that sort of detail. However the time it will save you in scrawling Tenteikūra every time, or else having to focus on maintaining it, should make it quite the convenience.

You quickly return to your own barracks, where you find Tatsuki still seated quietly on the rock where you left her. Thankfully the garden tends to be shaded until well after noon, so she's not going to end up burning her skin off at all, but you also don't want to interrupt. It looks like she's actually making a little progress at contacting her zanpakuto. Instead you seek out Yoruichi's familiar presence.

You find her sitting quietly at the low table in your office, sipping tea as Tenri stands attentively to one side.

“This Tenri woman seems quite taken with you,” she practically purrs with satisfaction at the clear morning breeze rolling in through the open windows and the warm tea in her hand. “She really knows her tea, too.”

“So, what'd she bring you exactly?”

You lay out the three personal objects on the table in front of your wife, and she inspects them carefully. “Does Tenkotsuki have any ideas how to do this?”

“Well, do you?” you inquire.

“I have two theories. First it may be the case that destroying an object releases its shinreiryoku. The second is that using it is the only way to produced the desired result.”

You take the pipe and hold it carefully, examining it from the mouthpiece right down to the stone bowl. Coyote even put a little baggie from his own personal supply down inside it, and you realize that since this is Coyote you're talking about smoking whatever is inside the baggie will probably get you stupidly high. But it's only now that you realize something important about the object in your hands, recalling back when you first learned of such rituals during your brief trip to the Americas...

“This is a communal pipe,” you realize aloud. “It's meant to be shared between two or more people in a close-knit group.”

Tenkotsuki and Yoruichi seem to come to a similar conclusion regarding one of the other objects.

“That is a masu,” Tenkotsuki observes, “intended to apportion rice between a family or community. Another object with a communal purpose.”

“Inari's gift's a masu,” Yoruichi tells you at the same time.

“Those are used by mortals to measure rice and other grains, aren't they?” Tenri asks. “I've never actually seen one before.”

“You tenchi don't eat?”

Tenri shakes her head fervently. “That's not it at all, we just don't measure things.”

Yoruichi reaches out and lifts the knife Artemis sent you, examining it carefully with her zanpakuto. “This must be a ceremonial weapon. The blade geometry is all wrong for a hunting knife, and the ornamentation adds no functional purpose. I'm getting as much from Shōsōtō.”

“A sacrificial knife?” you ask aloud.

“Seems that way.”

You have to reach a decision, which you feel may have long-lasting repercussions for both you and your wife:

>Share the pipe with Yoruichi. Someone clearly thought it would be a good idea for her to have a little shinkreiryoku of her own, and you don't disagree.

“Tenri, I know we hardly know you... but would you mind doing me a huge favor?”

“Of course not, ma'am,” she replies with a humble bow. “That's the reason I'm here, after all.”

“Try not to let us do anything too stupid,” you request, retrieving the bag of green herbal-looking stuff and pouring it into the bowl. “Knowing Coyote as I know Coyote, this may get a little weird before it's all said and done. But I don't see much choice.”

“Whoa, wait,” Yoruichi interrupts, holding out her hands as you set the herbs in the pipe-bowl alight with kidō. “You mean you wanna share the shinreiryoku? With me?

“Some divinity clearly thinks it was a good idea. Not sure which one exactly, but I don't really disagree,” you explain. “And if I had to pick one single person in the whole of the Seireitei to have my back like this, packing a little shinreiryoku in secret? It'd be you hands down.”

“Tenkotsuki? Let's get to it.”

You draw in some of the fragrant smoke through the pipe-stem, hold it, then exhale before passing the pipe to your wife who after a moment of hesitation, where she stares at it dubiously, does the same. It smells somewhat familiar, like there's something in that herbal blend you recognize but just can't quite put your finger on. You take turns for several minutes, feeling the amount of shinreiryoku in the pipe gradually dissipate until there's nothing left.

“It feels as though that was the last of it,” Tenkotsuki confirms. “Simple enough. I was expecting it to be more difficult. I feel somewhat let down.”

Strangely enough, what you don't really feel is high at all. You glance at Tenri and shrug.

“You're right. That was kind of underwhelming.”

Tenri sniffs thoughtfully at the air. “Oh, now I know what that smells like. There was catnip in there!”

Glancing over at Yoruichi, you can see a devilish, slightly disconnected smile spread all across her face. It may not have been much mixed in there, and definitely was too well-hidden for you to notice it for what it was... but it looks like it's had some sort of effect on her.

“Ah,” you mutter in dawning realization. “So that's the joke... well played, Coyote.”

does anyone else think we spent way too much time on Tatsuki? We need to get Rukia up to snuff, get someone into our empty Commando slot, and train them up as well. Tatsuki has other people who can teach her the basic stuff she has to learn right now
>>
>>715408
As much as I hate to say it, Tatsuki or even our nephew are likely candidates qualified for the commando slot within the time frame we have. Regular shimigami folk take decades to train up and condition into ship shape commando material. We may need to improvise and bend some rules in the few months that we have if no other promising canon commando material recruits show up in the academy unless Queen whips up more OC Shimigami.
>>
>>715408
In the short term... here's the thing. Finding a new Commando is a big deal, like walking into a shelter and falling in love with a puppy or a kitten. You're not always sure even what draws you in, but you just know somehow that this individual is Commando material. That open position is fully expected to remain open for a while, because while every up-and-coming shinigami who has the bravado and thinks they have the skills has their eye on it one of the key selection criteria is je ne sais quoi.

And the point about training is a valid one: a typical shinigami rookie would take years to get to the point of fighting even at Rukia's level. A true once-a-century "genius" might already be at or near her level when you found her. So instead of seeking to fill that opening, it made more sense to focus on preexisting responsibilities: if anything, it makes more sense to focus on Rukia a little more.
>>
>>713734
In both Greece and Rome human sacrifice was exceedingly rare, with historically-attested and mythological "stand-ins" having apparently replaced actual humans even before Publius Licinius Crassus had the practice officially banned. And while the method of sacrifice varied, if you really want to get specific a lot of the whole or partial-body sacrifices were burned sacrifices.

There is however a mythological case that shows the clear "right answer" although there are a few possible answers that would work. I don't expect you to be familiar with the "right story".

-OMAKE- Urahara meets BG9

Captain Urahara holds up his hands in self-defense. “I swear to you, this is completely above board! Captain Kusajishi said I could be here!”

“I'm sorry sir,” the guard at the gate apologizes with a bow, though his hand strays towards the blade at his waist. Whether he's conscious of the movement or not, Urahara honestly can't tell. “But this is a secure facility. Without proper authorization I can't allow you in.”

His partner's right hand finds the leather sling of his carbine, sliding his thumb underneath it in preparation to swing it into a firing position. “Now, if you can get that authorization? We'll be happy to oblige.”

“I see Riku's really drilled that Onmitsu discipline into your heads!” Urahara rubs the back of his head and smiles amicably to try and relieve some of the tension. “We seem to be at an impasse, then.”

From a small wooden structure emerges the third member of their fireteam, who closes her denreishinki and approaches the other three shinigami. “Just got a call from Lieutenant Matsumoto, Captain Urahara's clear. Apparently they reached some sort of arrangement during the Captains' meeting.”

The rifleman sighs in relief, lowering his hands to his sides. “Good to hear, Ogata. I really wasn't looking forward to drawing a weapon on a Captain... no way that ends well for any of us.”

“Myself included,” Urahara continues to grin. “Even if I'm a Captain, it's no fun getting shot at by my own allies!”

Ogata cocks her eyebrow. “You sound like you've got experience there.”

“The Second World War wasn't kind to me.”

“Welcome to the Ninth Division's world-famous brig,” the first man waves his hand at the heavy stone doors behind him. The Captain prefers the phrase 'Special Cases Ward', SpecWard for short.”

Inside is a long corridor of cells, each with reiatsu-dampening walls and heavy bars. As Urahara passes he can see that most are very simply furnished with the typical wooden beds and basic facilities, each with a window set high on the back wall to allow natural light. The cells that are under indefinite occupation, however, are a clear step above any he's seen in the Seireitei. The beds look more like military 'racks', each with proper padding and linens. Curtains can be drawn around the toilets and a shower head has been installed in each cell. There are even some creature comforts there: books, a clock-radio with headphones, free weights...
>1/?
>>
>>716274
“Would you rather,” a baritone voice begins from one of the cells.

Oh god DAMN it!” a female voice from the next cell hisses.

“... wear a snake around your neck for a full twenty-four hours, or have tea with Aizen?”

The occupant of the second cell down produces an answer as Urahara passes it, and he spies a male arrancar with a pencil mustache lying propped-up on the bed. “I would of course prefer the real snake to the metaphorical one, amigo. Any day of the week and twice on a Sunday. At least then I would know for certain when it was trying to kill me.”

“I'm trying to read, you dickheads!” the female arrancar between their cells protests, setting aside a book. Urahara can't read what the title is from where he's standing. Strangely, he can't feel any spiritual power from her either... this must be Cirrucci, then. “Can't you keep it down?”

“Oh, come on, Cirucci!” the occupant of the third cell, an arrancar with a large orange afro, admonishes his peer. “You've gotta learn to lighten up at some point! Hey, five things you wouldn't want to hear your hair stylist say?”

Cirucci sighs dramatically. “I'm not getting away from this, am I? Fine...”

“... is gray your natural color?”

“One.”

“It looks better short anyway.”

“Two.”

“Oh god that was your ear.”

“Three.”

On the opposite side a blonde arrancar uses her hardened fingernails to scratch away at a piece of wood. She seems utterly focused on the task, and Urahara can tell that the shape of a scorpion is beginning to emerge from the block. On a desk near her bed sit an owl, a horse, and a deer in increasing order of technical sophistication and detail.

Finally the Captain reaches the end of the hall reserved for captured Sternritter. One sits in her cell, either mute or resolutely silent by choice, while a pink-haired woman is doing technically-immaculate vertical pushups while standing on her hands. A much smaller girl with a short mop of blonde hair sits on the floor eating what seems to be a feast comprised of convenience store meals and snack foods, while a third with long greensih-blonde hair and a rather revealing uniform seems to be asleep.

The final cell is where Bambietta Basterbinne sits with the severed head of BG9.
>2/?
>>
Let the robot uprising begin.
>>
>>716285
“So you feeling comfortable here, BG9?” Bambietta asks as she straightens the head on a pillow. Whatever trick has been used to stem any subsequent blood loss isn't visible as the few cervical vertebrae still clinging to his skull have sunk deep into the plush fabric.

“Stability is ideal,” the head replies stoically. “Are current neighbors negotiable?”

“We're all in the same boat here,” Bambietta grumbles, “so try not to badmouth the rest of us too much?”

“And what boat might that be, Miss Basterbinne?”

Bambietta spins around with a surprised yelp. “BG9, why didn't you tell me this guy was creeping up on me!?”

“Alarm,” BG9 intones blankly. “Intruder detected.”

“Oh fuck you! I'd be better off tryin' to teach a toaster to talk.”

“Bite me.”

“So what do you want, nerd?” Bambietta asks angrily.

Urahara smiles, putting on his best impression of a genuine 'people person' to impress the Sternritter. “I wanna take samples from the inactive parts of BG9's brain.”

“You're fucking kidding me!”

“Query: why?”

“Because I want to perform some tests.”

“Query repeats.”

“Because I can clone the sample tissue and my tests won't harm anyone else!”

“Clarification,” BG9 drones, the mono-eye behind his mask fixed on Urahara. “Purpose of tests?”

Urahara sighs, motioning for Bambietta to step aside so he can crouch near the desk BG9's pillow rests atop. He's now at eye level with the talking head. “To refine a method for stabilizing and regenerating damaged quincy brain tissue, because I don't feel confident that I can repeat Miss Basterbinne's results.”

“If a result cannot be recreated given identical conditions,” BG9 replies, “it cannot be considered scientifically valid. Query: is this your current line of thinking?”

“You have a firm grasp of the process!” Urahara grins, standing up and taking a step back. “I won't hold back any relevant information then: this comes from one trained mind to another.”

"Statement registered: I am listening."
>3/4
>>
>>716418
“So you see,” Urahara concludes after several minutes of explanation, “I can't accept captain Kusajishi's methods. Like almost everything else she does the results are encouraging, but the way she attains those results flies in the face of the basic standards of scientific inquiry that I have always sought to hold myself to. I can't replicate many of her successes, and I can only speculate as to why some of the solutions she comes up with actually work.”

“Expression of sympathy. Previous employer and colleagues suffered from similar flaws. Root cause proposed: human condition.”

“The philosophical equivalent to a punt,” Urahara chuckles. “I get you there. Sometimes I have to wonder though, whether the universe has simply been twisting itself in little, subtle ways all this time. As if something I can't understand scientifically is bending the twists of fortune to favor her, and in the process thumb its hypothetical nose at me.”

“Audentes Fortuna adiuvat,” BG9 offers simply.

“Maybe Fortune does have something to do with it,” the Captain sighs. “Who knows?”

After several long minutes of introspective silence, Urahara smacks himself on the cheeks. “Okay, enough of that! So, BG9, how about donating part of your brain? For science?”

“Suggestion: focus on harvesting cervical nerves first. They are currently not needed.”

“My secondary focus will be the corticospinal tract,” Kisuke replies, “same reasons, really.”

“Agreed.”

“So you really mean to do this?” Bambietta asks, clearly not even bothering to understand the anatomy involved or what any of the scientific discussion means. Her primary concern as always is the preservation of a quincy's life, even if he's been reduced to a talking head.

“Affirmative,” BG9 replies stoically.

Kisuke shrugs. “Would you rather me take a chance with the full procedure? Because I could strap one of your friends here in and go to work right away... but I couldn't guarantee that they'd survive. The problem with Riku's success is I can't even tell a subsequent patient what their chances are.”

Bambietta sighs. “... just be careful.”

“Always, Miss Basterbinne."
>>
>>716485
>Sometimes I have to wonder though, whether the universe has simply been twisting itself in little, subtle ways all this time. As if something I can't understand scientifically is bending the twists of fortune to favor her, and in the process thumb its hypothetical nose at me
huh, are there any Hougyokus unaccounted for?
>>
>>716485
wow. I'm surprised that BG9 is surprisingly chill with this. I like this Omake Queen.
Also I like the fact that we get to see more of Urahara's character and his hidden frustration on the shenanigans Riku routinely pulls off whether be it helping Bambi stabilize with the hollow vaccine treatment or the successful transformation of a living human (devoid of shimigami nor quincy heritage) into a bonafide shimigami. Also BG9's personality computer syntax is somewhat adorable for a quincy in his current predicament. He comes off as surprisingly sane but that may be because of how the computer syntax filters out much of the emotional sentiment and motivations.
>>
>>716285
Hang in there Cirucci. You'll at least be getting some fresh company soon.

And that's an unexpected outlet for Menoly to focus on.

>>716485

>>
>>716509

>>716574
Glad you liked it. And as for BG9's personality, a LOT of his brain isn't exactly working right now. The parts of his mind that would have driven him insane in this situation had to go, naturally.
>>
>>716574
Agreed, this is good stuff.
>>
>>716619
So you're saying his mental sanity got "better" temporarily when he went through the decapitation protocol? So he's basically operating on "safe mode" and purged much of his mind save for his logic and whatever parts of his base personality that wasn't corrupted by insanity? Wow.

Nice to see Menoly and Cirucci doing something else other than moping. Menoly picking up woodcarving as a hobby was from Tia's preptalk right? How's Cirucci adjusting to the life of being the spiritual equivalent of a muggle?

Incidentally, you have an excellent grasp of Urahara's character.
>>
>>716675
Essentially, yes. It was part of the protection protocol.

As for Menoly and Cirucci, they're not doing too badly. Gantenbainne pointed out to the latter that she, unlike any of the others, will probably be allowed to live out a more or less normal life when this is all over. So she's got a slightly better sense of perspective on things. Still bitter though.

Neliel Tu Odelschwank has rarely, if ever, been so upset. Her escort through the Ninth Division's barracks, Tia Halibel, has long since picked up on it but until the two arrancar approached the brig had said nothing.

“Wait.” Neliel turns to face Halibel, the latter's face almost concealed behind her collar.

“What do you want now?” Nel demands in a low voice.

“Are you sure you want to go in there?”

Neliel looks completely nonplussed. “What do you mean? Of course I want to see them!”

Halibel shuts her eyes in contemplation. “Very well. But do not forget that you chose this path.”

The guards out front all acknowledge Halibel as she passes, leading Neliel into the brig. She seems surprised at first, as if she were expecting something far worse than even an average prison. There were no torture chambers here, no evidence of cruelty or neglect. In fact there was a pleasant smell in the air, nutty and wholesome like freshly baked bread.

As it happens that was precisely what she was smelling: breakfast.

“Western this morning?” Halibel asks quietly, peering into a cell where another blonde-haired arrancar sits with a few hand-carved wooden figures.

The arrancar nods. “Wasn't sure I'd like it at first, but these 'croissant' things kinda won me over.”

Opposite that cell sits a black-haired arrancar, who simply stares at Neliel in disbelief. She turns around to spot the familiar face, and their eyes meet awkwardly.

“I was not expecting to see you, señiora,” Dordoni greets with an awkward attempt at a flourishing sweep of his arm. The gesture is hampered by the fact that he can't really bend at the waist anymore. “Otherwise I would have worn clean pants.”

“How are you feeling, Dordoni?” Neliel asks tentatively.

Dordoni Alessandro del Socaccio chuckles to himself. “From the waist up? Not badly. From the waist down? Not at all.”

She glances away, her expression troubled. “I am sorry that this has happened to you, for what little such regrets are worth.”

“I was hardly using anything down there anyway,” Dordoni shrugs off her concerns, “except when I tripped over my own feet, that is. No, Miss Neliel, my grudge with you is about something else entirely.”

“And I am certain the time for that has passed, señiora,” Dordoni interrupts. “And I am equally certain you know the problem. Everyone else certainly does.”

“Partly because we've heard it every day,” another familiar voice grunts from two cells down.

“Gantenbainne! I trust that you're in good health as well?”

“Perfect, Miss Neliel,” the bushy-haired arrancar replies calmly. “It relieves me to see that you are keeping well. I had been concerned that there would be some attempt at retribution.”

“There... was,” Neliel admits softly. “Pesche and Dondachakka...”

“Don't tell me Aizen killed those two weaklings,” Cirucci grumbles from her own cell. “Can't say it'd surprise me though... asshole.”

“No,” Neliel replies, shaking her head as if to convince herself. “They're simply being held hostage... I'm not sure I made the right choice, but I was convinced to fight against Aizen.”

“Neliel, it sounds like you're saying the right words,” Dordoni observes slyly from his bed. “But that you don't really mean them. You think you abandoned them the same way you abandoned us.”

“No!” Neliel protests. “I was certain that Captain would do nothing to...”

“We're not trying to accuse you,” Gantenbainne reassures her, glaring in the direction of his two partners despite not being able to see them, “no matter how some of us may make it sound. You made the decision you thought was the best one.”

“You're way too forgiving, Gantenbainne!” Cirucci protests, rolling over on her side to face away from their visitor. “We had a purpose! I'd have rather died right there on the spot than lose that again!”

“Please don't say that, Cirucci!” Neliel insists. “If you're alive you can always find a new purpose! Maybe even a better one!”

“And what the hell kinda purpose am I gonna find, goat girl?” Cirucci spits. “The only thing I was ever good at was fighting, and now I can't even do that!”

“For warriors like us to be able to die with a purpose? That is a rare blessing, señiora,” Dordoni explains pensively. “Very rare indeed. And while it is true that we may some day find a new reason for living, the fact is that we have had to do so twice already. I for one agree with Cirucci, despite our little personal grudge. I would have preferred to die with purpose than live without it.”

Neliel seems completely taken aback. For a shinigami to talk like that is one thing, them being on average so deeply mired in their notions of duty and sacrifice to even question it. But for a hollow, a being born of instinctive fear? Such words seem alien.

Her troubled expression doesn't escape Halibel's stoic gaze.

“You fear losing them.”

The words don't come as an accusation, but instead register as more of an observation. A passive statement that summarizes what thoughts and motivations Halibel can see in her fellow arrancar. Neliel's reaction confirms it before she even realizes that she's flinched, and so she makes no effort to hide it.

“Yes. And I know I've let that shape my decisions.”

Halibel stands quietly, deep in thought as she stares at Neliel. “A leader cannot allow that.”

“Aren't you afraid too?” Neliel demands heatedly, glaring at the near-expressionless arrancar across from her. “Or are you really as unfeeling as you seem? Do you even have people you love?”

“I do,” Halibel replies simply. If she felt insulted by Neliel's statement she doesn't show it in the slightest. “My one desire is to make the world safer for them. Even Lady Riku's position is precarious.”

“So how can you let them risk their lives, then?” Neliel presses frantically. “How can you even begin to play that balancing act of risking the very existence of everything you want to protect? That's insane!”

“Because they all have things they want to protect, too. That is all.”

“And so you think I was wrong?” Neliel accuses. “You think I've failed them all, don't you?”

“Your Privaron had their pride as warriors. Your fraccìon had your safety,” Halibel observes. “Your own fear led you to deny them the chance to protect those things with their own hands.”

Neliel stares at Halibel, incapable of formulating a response as her glare softens into an expression of deep, almost helpless uncertainty. The gradual realization of her own selfishness has begun to set in in earnest.

“This is why I asked.”

Then, in a move that surprises everyone present, Halibel rounds on the Privaron with a stern glare. “And you should seek to show some compassion towards this woman. She only wished to protect what was important to her.”

“Your behavior was also inexcusable.”

“Couldn't have said it better,” Gantenbainne agrees calmly, pulling his visor-like mask down over his eyes. “For what it's worth Lady Neliel, I get where you're coming from. And I've accepted my loss. So don't go beatin' yourself up over me, okay?”

As Halibel strides towards the exit, each step seemingly calculated and purposeful beyond any reason, Neliel follows along silently. She's only now truly beginning the long and difficult process of sorting out for herself what she should do with herself now.

Hah, they don't realize it yet, but they're better off than they think they are.

To be a warrior, a soldier, is considered a sacrifice in and of itself. Not just for risking your life, else we wouldn't honor those who came home unharmed.

Because in order to become a skilled killer, you have to give up a far more fulfilling life in exchange. Now they have a chance at it. And what's more, this time they get to choose.

Wow. Love the hefty character development in this omake. It goes to show how much the Piravron have changed in a sense, with the most development coming from Neliel herself as well as showing the hidden depths of character development that Tia has regarding how she views on protecting her subordinates as well as showing the difference of her character between SSQ Tia, her canon version, and SSQ Neliel.
Lol, looks like Menoly looks comfy and well adjusted. I'm willing to guess croissants will soon become her favorite food for breakfast.

And does Dondoni actually have a medical fraccion to attend to his paraplegic needs or is he able to take care of himself?
>>
>>721244
Thanks Queen for these omakes!
>>
>>721281
For that matter, considering how permanent injuries tend to be in Bleach, I wouldn't be surprised to see them on the battlefield again anyway. Nel's Fraccon certainly will, since Giggi has certainly gained new friends
>>
>>721281
It's also ironic that the greatest challenge for a warrior is finding purpose when there is no war to be waged or battles to be fought. They're facing their greatest challenge at this moment yet they don't realize it. But the fact that they are taking the time (or beginning to in Neliel's case) between conflicts to reflect upon themselves is a great indicator of how much they're changing.

Hey Queen, is the new "burn the dead bodies" policy in effect in the G13? The intel we gained from Bambietta's initial interrogation (prior to her becoming our ally) should have reached their ears. And we should have brought this up during the captains meeting... shit. We forgot to bring that up.
>>
>>721320
Bambietta already shared that bit of knowledge, though incinerating EVERY body is a bit impractical.
>>
>>721335
When is Sasikabe going to start his new job?
>>
>>721335
Did we at least burn the relatively intact bodies of the major elites of the enemy (Enemy Sternritter)? As far as I can remember, The Wind and the Overkill have been cremated(cannot be raised), The Underbelly had his bones blasted by extreme water pressure (cannot be raised), The Roar turned into fine mist from a machine gun cero Barrage (cannot be raised), the Karma was reduced to a talking head (did we dispose of the robotic body?), The Question was turned into a mute (still alive), and the SuperStar was simply decapitated (corpse is intact, needs burning).
>>
>>721335
There is a kido for that! Alternatively Hat and glasses can make something for that.
>>
>>721371
BG9's body has been totally destroyed. As for Mask, his central nervous system has basically been incinerated by Kobara no Tachi.
>>
>>721427
And zombies use their brains since when? Also, If they can turn a guy into a robot, they can do the same for Mask.

I mean, think MAD SCIENCE!
>>
>>721449
Hare, Queen said the entire Central Nervous System. Not just the brain. the central nervous system. The Mask was turned into a unresponsive meatbag. You can't make your muscles do shit if you don't have the nerve endings to tell them what to do.
>>
>>721449
Basically, Gigi would need to recover the body and replace the entire central nervous system. Which isn't as easy as just gluing an arm or a leg back on, it's a particularly intricate biological system with a lot of room for errors.

Which isn't to say she can't, it's just a lot of effort.
>>
>>721466
>Which isn't to say she can't, it's just a quick request of Kurotsuchi.

and a long slow procedure of torture and unnecessary experiments performed on Gigi.

>“Whoa, wait,” Yoruichi interrupts, holding out her hands as you set the herbs in the pipe-bowl alight with kidō. “You mean you wanna share the shinreiryoku? With me?

You know, now that Yoruichi has shinreiryoku of her own...

>“The Hōgyoku is also at least partly divine in nature,”
>“The variable is whether your wife could recreate the Hōgyoku in such a way that we could use the copy instead, though personally I doubt it. Any facsimile loses something in the process, and duplicating shinreiryoku seems like an impossibility.”

... Then does that mean her ability to copy the Hogyoku has gone up?

Maybe this makes it into a viable course of action now.
>>
>>723358
I think reiryoku gives everyone a unique ability, mad science and hogyoku aside.

I wonder how that worked out for Aizen. Did it give him a new skill, or did it retain Ywach's qualities? Maybe the hogyoku ate it all and boosted its own capabilities, or maybe he and Mayuri are bullshit enough at science to modify the essence of divinity itself?
>>
>>723530
>I think reiryoku gives everyone a unique ability, mad science and hogyoku aside.

Huh, really? That'll be interesting to see then!

But my thought was actually much more basic:
Yoruichi copies items using her Reiryoku --> She can somehow copy even the Hogyoku using her Reiryoku, it merely lacks the Shinreiryoku (and is a degraded copy) --> Yoruichi HAS Shinreiryoku now --> Her copy of the Hogyoku will now be made with Shinreiryoku rather than just normal Shinigami Reiryoku

Her previous copy of the Hogyoku (AND OTHER DIVINE ARTIFACTS! she has other stuff she can copy too) lacked Shinreiryoku; it won't lack it anymore; therefore maybe they'll be better, more faithful recreations.

Any special abilities or special qualities she gains from Shinreiryoku would be on top of that.
>>
>>723731
You really didn't need to spell out your line of thinking. It was obvious enough. Doesn't mean that's how it works.
>>
>>723751
Nevermind.

>>705039
>If the paranoia is that great and minor observations lead up to that conclusion, just have Ryuuken or Uryu themselves check up on it, so we don't infringe too much.

I swear I somehow managed to miss this post despite having read through things twice...
>>
>>723530
>I think reiryoku gives everyone a unique ability
Probably the last thing I can address before switching gears entirely: yes. Shinreiryoku, when properly utilized, will have unusual properties depending on the individual using it. That doesn't necessarily mean there's an active "power" they can use.

As for how it works for Yoruichi and Aizen, that remains to be seen.
>>
>>723948
I wonder how the Royal Guard will react to finding out that Riku and Yoru smoking divine weed... It's not illegal if the divine objects were sent as a gift right? Besides that pipe was meant to be used by 2 or more people as per Native American Customs!
>>
>>724223
Eh. Nobody really cares what they smoked, and Shutara knows what Riku's up to. The Monk would be furious if he knew where she got the shinreiryoku from, despite the fact that TECHNICALLY there was nothing done that broke any rules.
>>
>>711193
Just a thought, but while inviting an enemy to attack you is nice and all, you generally want to have a few tricks up your sleeve when you do so. For example, hiding your reinforcements as a group of uncooperative prisoners. Or even better, as prisoners everyone "knows" are crippled. Sometimes hiding people in plain sight is your best bet.
