>Your job as a maid and hitman is simple; Protect the young master from the shadows, and be the best maid you possibly can.

-----------------------
(1/2)
The blonde maid's eyes remained on the table in front of her, where the invitation in a white envelope lay. Her gaze didn't waver, as the young boy paced slowly on the opposite side of the room. The rest of the staff were going about their business, with the exception of the two girls eavesdropping by the large double doors. Both figures in the entertainment room remained silent, the topic of the last ten minutes still hanging in the air. The young boy finally turned, setting his palm firmly on the table.

“Elisabeth, I don't need to remind you that you are a maid, correct?”

“No, young master.” Elisabeth's eyes didn't waver, as she continued boring a hole into the envelope on the table.

“This party is something I have to attend as the owner of the Vermilion Industry and Technological Enterprise Incorporated. It is a party for owners and their relatives, not the staff. Why are you so adamant on going? There has to be a reason; I know you wouldn't ask for something without reason.” Alexander's tone became inquisitive, as he looked across the table at the blonde maid. Her eyes never left the envelope.

“I feel the most confident when you are nearby, young master.” Elisabeth's tone remained monotonous. Nothing had happened in the last four months. After the attack on the mansion by the Modification Wing and the assault by the hobos, nothing had happened. She couldn't shake the terrifying feeling that something serious was just around the corner. Something bad. But, even with that, she couldn't tell this young boy. To do so would mean betraying everything she'd done to this point in order to remain the perfect maid. Her emerald eyes finally left the envelope, as she flashed a perfect smile at Alexander. “I'm just worried you might dirty your clothes or something similar during the party, requiring my aid.”

“Elisabeth...I'm not a child. I'll be going alone with my grandfather.” Alexander's eyes narrowed, before the young boy glanced away wearily. He walked to the doorway, pulling it open. Both Faith and Karin fell to the ground within, as he walked past them briskly. Elisabeth's hands relaxed from the balled-up fists they had been. Alexander's stubborn nature was going to kill him; that upset the maid more than anything else. She rose from her seated position, walking up to the two girls. Both rose to kneeling positions, one looking sheepish and the other embarrassed.

“Is the dining room clean, Faith? And what about the laundry, Karin.” Elisabeth's cold tone even surprised the maid, as she questioned both girls. Judging by their eyes immediately falling to the ground and their mood becoming meek.

“Yes, Head Maid.” Faith muttered, glancing to see if Alexander was still in the hallway. Elisabeth had ordered them to call her that once their employment had become official.

“Is Alexander really thinking about going to that party with only the old man? That's ridiculously stupid. Elisabeth, you have a plan, right?” Karin asked while staring down the hallway. Elisabeth suppressed the urge to shoot the girl and thought on it. Who could possibly have a way around the young master, in order to secure a way to that party?

Elisabeth dismissed both girls and watched as they fled the room. She walked over to the doorway and leaned against the frame. The young master had been acting distant more and more lately, which was worrying the maid. She shook her head, dismissing the idle thoughts. This was a time for action, not reminiscing!

Heading down the stairs, Elisabeth crossed the entryway into the dining room. She found Eric setting the table for lunch. He paused as he set a plate down to glance up at the maid. His weary smile confirmed she was still wearing the scowl from before.

“Things didn't go well?” He asked as he continued setting the table. She walked forward and leaned against the table.

“No. He still stubbornly refuses to let me go. You're worried too, right?”

“Of course I am. Both the grandson and grandfather are going to a party that literally screams hostage situation. Don't glare at me like that, Elisabeth. You're scaring me.” The cook spoke honestly, before retreating to the kitchen. Elisabeth's gaze fell to the floor. Hostage situations, possible attacks from Angel, and other situations circled through her head, as she struggled to maintain her composure. It was too dangerous, and she could do nothing from this mansion. The cook rolled out of the kitchen with his metal cart laden with food. He began setting various dishes on the table as the maid stared at the ground. When he set the final entree onto the table, he spoke up. “Elisabeth, I'll give my friends a call. They might have a party this evening, at the same hotel or nearby. We'll call it a date and take an evening for the two of us. Sound like a plan?”

“Sounds convenient. Update me when you know for sure.” Elisabeth muttered, pushing away from the table. She straightened her dress out and took a deep breath. As the young master entered the room, she nodded in his direction and walked past. She glanced towards the staircase and then the front door.

Elisabeth made her way up to the third floor, taking care to avoid the others along the way. When she reached her room, she entered before locking the door behind her. The maid would need privacy for what came next.

Walking over to the large dressers, Elisabeth pulled the drawers out. To someone just casually searching, it was a dresser full of lingerie. Reaching underneath, the maid triggered a switch. The wooden paneling on the bottom clicked up on one end. Grabbing the wooden panel, Elisabeth pulled it out with the clothes still inside. This drawer held all of her quiet weapons. She pulled various components out, laying them in a pile next to her. Wire, knives, poisons, and various other parts were set into piles of differing sizes. Satisfied, the maid pulled out two small pouches to secure the tools in. Then she returned the wooden paneling to its place, locking it securely. Pushing the drawer back into place, she pulled out a matching set of black lingerie. Nothing too provocative, but just fancy enough to show class. Then she moved onto the next drawer

This drawer held the components to her suppressed Glock. She pulled out the pistol's different pieces, quickly assembling them. She double checked the weapon to ensure it worked properly. Satisfied, she set the pistol next to the pouches along with two magazines. Since this was a party, the maid doubted she would need large amounts of ammunition. After properly putting away the drawer, the maid turned her attention to the large closet. Time to decide her theme for the main course.

Pushing through the maid outfits, Elisabeth reached the back of the closet. She undid the paneling in the back and slid it open. Rows of firearms of various makes and models were unveiled, but the maid had her mind set on a particular weapon. Her hand dropped to the bottom, pulling a larger pistol from the rack. She grabbed the small carrying case and magazines, setting all three to one side. Then she closed the paneling again, sealing it shut. She quickly checked the pistol, ensuring all the components were assembled properly and functioning. Then she locked it into the case, before setting it on the bed.

Turning back towards the closet, Elisabeth pulled all the maid outfits to one side to look at her few casual outfits. A handful of dresses and suits she'd kept from before her current job, though a small number she had purchased after. She chose a black suit, settling for something that looked nice and she could fight decently well in. It was a two piece suit, with a black skirt of medium length. She set all the parts on the bed, before turning to her small dresser for socks. As she sifted through the drawer, she found the metal bar from before. The intricate symbols still had no meaning for Elisabeth. But the maid had a nagging suspicion she'd seen them somewhere before. Securing a pair of white socks, she tossed them on the bed. Then she set to work properly securing the smaller weapons into their cases.

By the time Elisabeth had finished her work, it was late in the afternoon. She set all of the weapons into a neat pile alongside the clothes. The maid still had time before the young master would leave for his party. She tried to decide what was the best use of her time.

The maid walked down the hallway, pausing at the door to the archives. She knocked firmly twice, before waiting for a reply. After a short pause, she heard the voice she'd anticipated.

“The door's unlocked. Feel free to come in.” Elisabeth opened the door, closing it behind her as she stepped into the archive. Adam was stacking books next to the full shelves. The suitcase from their assault on the Modification Wing lay on the desk furthest from the door. “Ah, Elisabeth. How have you been? Sorry about my grandson's stubbornness. He's worried about meeting her, after 4 years of separation. The suitcase still remains a mystery. What language or code was used to encrypt that lock is beyond me and the centuries of knowledge stored in this library. What did you need, though? I know you're not the sort of person to come for idle conversation.”

“Eric is securing a ticket to that party for him and me. We won't be on the same floor, but we'll be just a phone call away. Does that work for you, Adam?” The maid stepped forward, holding out a folded piece of paper. Adam took it firmly and looked at it. Scribbled on it was the number to Elisabeth's cell. He nodded, folding it. His blue eyes became heavy, as the age showed on his face. The maid noted that his hair was graying more than it had before. He turned in his chair and paused with a hand on a book.

“Elisabeth, do you think I'm doing the right thing? I've forced Alexander to become the next heir, because it's his birthright...but, did he have other dreams? Could he have lived an ordinary life, with no threat of death looming over his shoulder, if I hadn't forced him to take up my son's mantle?” His voice was full of sorrow, as the old man's gaze fell to the ground. The maid stood next to him, waiting for him to finish his question. Gathering her thoughts, she answered with her sincere feelings.

“You did what you felt was best. I think it was the best route. After all, if you hadn't, I wouldn't be here, having this conversation with you. Enjoy your party and evening, old man.” Elisabeth spoke firmly but softly, before walking towards the door. She paused with her hand on the handle, before pushing the door open and exiting. She left the old man with his thoughts in the archives, closing the door firmly behind her. She double-checked the time. She still had an hour before the young master would leave.

Elisabeth walked down the stairs into the entryway. She noted the young master as he entered his room on the second floor. He was getting ready for the party. She was reluctant to leave him alone, but decided it was for the best. If the brat wanted to be independent, the maid would let him. She walked into the dining room and found the two girls eating sandwiches with the cook. He stopped talking as the maid walked in. He glanced at both girls and finished speaking.

“Well, kiddos, I'll finish story time later. I have something I need to discuss with Elisabeth.” Both girls nodded, mouths full of sandwiches, as the man pushed in his chair. Both the cook and maid walked into the kitchen. Eric tossed his apron onto the counter and turned towards Elisabeth. “Good news or bad news, which do you want first?”

“Did we get a way into the hotel or not?” Elisabeth muttered, eyes narrowing. Her tone came across harsher than needed and the cook made it known with his glare.

“There wasn't a party going on. I had to make a few calls, but I managed to pull enough strings to get what we needed. It's not perfect, though.” Eric shook his head with a chuckle. “My little sister bought me the suite on the top floor to 'fuck the whore I'd found', as she so eloquently put it. So, we will be in the same hotel, but twenty floors above where the party is taking place. I'll be bringing rappelling equipment, but I'm personally hoping we don't need it.”

“Fucking a whore...I wonder where she got the foul language from.” Elisabeth finally smiled, suppressing the urge to chuckle. She glanced at the tall redhead, trying to imagine what his sister would be like. Definitely angry, that seemed to be one of Eric's prominent traits. She glanced at her watch. There was fifteen minutes remaining. “Have you told the girls and Patrick we won't be here this evening?”

“All three are already tracking. I trust you've prepared your outfit for the evening?” The cook began putting ingredients on the counter away, not pausing as he spoke.

“I had something planned, but I doubt it's slutty enough for your sister's accusations.” Elisabeth responded, walking out of the kitchen. She passed the two girls eating their sandwiches. Both nodded in her direction. She could trust the mansion in their care.

Elisabeth paused in the entryway and watched as the young master made his way down the staircase. He was wearing a black business suit. She suppressed the urge to smile, as the young boy noticed her. Alexander continued walking forward, stopping when he was near Elisabeth. The young boy's eyes darted towards the ground, before he began speaking.

“I'd like to apologize for my outburst earlier. It was very unprofessional. I'm currently worried about something, and it's affecting my mood.” He sighed irritably, raising one hand to cover his face. Elisabeth noticed the ornate ring on his hand for the first time. It had a red gemstone of notable size. Alexander noticed her gaze and held his hand out. “Ah, the ring. This is the Vermilion crest. It's the ring that proves my heritage and right to lead the Vermilion family. Well, that's what it was, but now it's just a fancy ring.”

Elisabeth stepped forward, as the boy rambled about the ring. She reached forward, brushing his hair aside. The maid kissed him gently on the forehead, before stepping away and speaking. “Have a fun party, young master. Stay safe and come back home to me, okay?”

“Okay, Elisabeth.” The boy's gaze fell, as he tried to hide his embarrassment. Adam walked down the staircase, wearing a gray suit. Both of them made their way to the garage, as Elisabeth stood by and watched. The moment the door to the garage closed, Elisabeth began making her way towards her room.

-----------------

The cook was sitting next to the car when Elisabeth stepped into the garage. Eric was wearing a dress pants and a casual shirt. He whistled as he looked over her black suit. She ignored it and took her suitcase to the car. Tossing it in the back seat, she glanced towards the cook.

“What are you bringing for weapons? I have my Bruno pistol, Glock, and some tools.”

“My butcher knife, revolver, and a couple surprises. Nothing too major, because it's going to be a quiet evening. You have anything else you want to do before we leave? The old man has a thirty minute lead on us.” The cook sighed and opened his door. He looked across at the maid, eyes already cold. He was as prepared for business as she was.

Eric drove up to the curb of the giant hotel, parking the car. A parking attendant took the keys after looking at Eric's credentials. Two attendants came out and offered to take their bags. Both the cook and maid declined, choosing to carry their luggage themselves. As they walked towards the entrance, another car drove up. It was a model Elisabeth had never seen before. It made almost no sound as it rolled up. What kind of engine did that thing have?

As if on cue, reporters and cameramen surged out of the hotel, running to either side of the carpet as the car door was opened by an attendant. A young girl stepped out. Judging by her height and build, she was young and just hit puberty. Only a few years older than the young master, if Elisabeth could warrant a guess. She felt the cook grab her arm and yank her to the side. Before she could react, Eric forced her head down.

“Cecilia! It's been a while!” A voice she recognized called out and Elisabeth was suddenly grateful for the Cook's reaction. She slowly looked up and watched as Alexander hugged the girl in the purple dress. Both exchanged kisses on the cheeks, before walking towards the door inside. Elisabeth just watched in silence, surrounded by the sounds of questioning reporters and the flashes of cameras. Once the two disappeared inside, the paparazzi followed them inside.

“Who was that, Eric?” Elisabeth muttered, looking towards the redheaded man.

“Cecilia Lavender, the young genius in charge of Lavender Robotics. She used her inventions to bail her father's failing company out and put them back into the millionaire status. They're still on the rise in stock prices as well. She earned the right to stand beside him. It's a gap between us normal folks and those two that can never be crossed through determination alone.”

Elisabeth was silent, fist tightening on the suitcase. So, that was the girl Alexander had been so worried about. Why? If that girl was so talented, why would the boy be worried about standing next to her? Then it dawned on the maid. Alexander only stood where he was today thanks to his grandfather and father's achievements. Compared to a girl like Cecilia who'd fought to gain her wealth, he was just a spoiled brat. She shook her head, smiling wistfully. 'You don't have to worry about things like that, Alexander. You're amazing in your own right.'

The two made their way inside after waiting ten minutes, to ensure they wouldn't run into the two kids. The hotel clerk gave Eric the key to the suite and told him the combination for the special elevator. As the two stood in the elevator, Elisabeth spoke again.

“I was meaning to ask before...but what does your sister do, that she could get us this suite?”

“Oh, she took my place as the leader of the Cross family. Don't give me that look; we've scaled down on the actual crimes and have directed our focus on preventing it. I'm not sure how much money is actually involved, but it is a lot. Don't worry, though. I haven't made any enemies for years.” The cook laughed softly as he leaned back against the elevator wall. The door dinged open, and both turned towards the hallway. As the cook reached into his pocket for the keys, Elisabeth heard it. The bolt of a rifle being locked forward. Where?!

Elisabeth stepped forward, grabbing Eric's collar firmly. Her open hand raised the hem of her skirt, firmly grasping her suppressed Glock. She saw the flash of a muzzle from the door to the right, as she yanked Eric back into the safety of the elevator. A loud boom crossed the hallway, followed by a ricochet as the bullet narrowly missed the confines of the elevator. Elisabeth took a deep breath, before muttering.

“No enemies, huh?”

“Sis must have pissed off the wrong guys. They saw her purchase a hotel room and thought she'd be coming here for a vacation. Unless...” The cook paused, before slamming his head against the glass. Rising to his feet, he drew the revolver from his belt. “She intentionally set this up. That little cunt knew I'd be able to kill these guys and offered me this suite intentionally.”

“Sounds like a lovely family. On my mark.” Elisabeth stepped back, bracing her foot against the glass wall. Then she sprinted forward, launching herself chest height into the hallway.

Since they had been met by a single shot, Elisabeth figured their assailant in the closet was using a semi-automatic rifle. As a large crack filled the air, she felt a line of heat as the bullet shot past where her head should have been. She fired a volley of rounds into the crack and door as she fell towards the ground. She crashed onto her shoulder, rolling to reduce the impact and landing on her feet. She raised her pistol and walked towards the door. Eric stepped out of the elevator, Glock and revolver held in both hands. The maid pushed open the door and found the man laying back against a mess of cleaning supplies. Ignoring the blood and mess, she grabbed the dropped rifle. Examining it, she ensured the weapon still functioned. Good. Sliding the Glock back into the holster, she grabbed the few magazines the man had on his person. Pointing towards the door to the suite, she spoke firmly.

“The enemy knows we're here. This rifle isn't quiet. How do you want to do this?”

“I'm not the professional here, Elisabeth. I trust your judgment. Nice rifle, though. Taurus makes reliable weapons.” The cook put away his Glock, only keeping his revolver out.

Elisabeth closed her eyes, as Eric stepped back in confusion. She focused on her body, trying to draw out the burning pleasure from all those battles prior. She felt something just outside of her grasp, no matter how she reached. Her breathing became ragged, as she tried to grasp the burning flame. She heard a shout from Eric, but couldn't decipher the words. Get...fuck...fire...dammit. She glanced over, vision hazy from her intense concentration. Four stings hit her, sending her to the ground. She slammed into the ground, rifle clattering to the ground next to her. She felt wet warmth, as the smell of iron reached her dull senses.

That...hurt. With that thought, the flame suddenly ignited deep within, surging throughout her body. Her eyes narrowed, as the cuts in her body began healing rapidly.

Eric could only watch in shock as Elisabeth went down to gunfire. Would she do that again? As if in response to his mental question, the woman rolled onto all fours in the pool of her own blood. Her hands closed on the rifle before she sprinted forward. Bullets cut trails through her arms and legs, which immediately healed. The four men who'd come through the doorway opened fire on the girl who wouldn't die. He took careful aim, destroying the head of the furthest man with a single shot. Elisabeth slammed her rifle up through the jaw of the closest man, before firing a volley of shots that destroyed his head. Kicking the corpse back through the doorway, she spun and shot the remaining two men. Both guys were sent stumbling back against the wall. Their body armor was good enough to stop the rounds. The two men split in both directions, bringing their weapons to bear on Elisabeth. She dropped the now-empty rifle, catching it by the barrel with her hand. Ignoring the smell and sound of burning flesh, she slammed the butt into the furthest man's knee, completely shattering the joint. He collapsed screaming, as Eric shot the other man once in the back of the head. He began walking forward, as Elisabeth slammed her heel into the injured man's head. It collapsed and popped with a sickening crush and spray of gore. The cook didn't lower his guard, only slightly put off by Elisabeth's silence. The woman suddenly darted into the suite, which was followed by more gunshots. He sighed and leaned against the wall. Going in there now would be suicide.
>>
(2/2)
Elisabeth's eyes snapped open. The first thing she felt was the overwhelming aching in all of her body. She sat up, wincing as her entire body complained about the movement. She saw the Cook on the phone and noticed two shots on the coffee table. She took one and downed it, grimacing at the taste and burn. It might help a little. She rose shakily to her feet and walked towards the Cook. She tripped and fell, but the man caught her.

“Hey, careful. Judging by your old clothes, you were shot about....thirty or more times. You're probably feeling that now. Depending too much on that serum could get you killed, Elisabeth. That was the hotel on the phone. They're firing up the furnaces in the basement now. They already know my sister's line of business and sent up their best cleaners. You should relax.”

Elisabeth nodded, wincing as her body continued aching. Glancing down, she realized she was dressed only in a button-up shirt. She looked up at the Cook, who was walking towards the small kitchen. “Your clothes were destroyed. I put what I had available on you after addressing your injuries. There are some in the bedroom next door, but I didn't know your tastes. You have a bruise on your arm from where you collapsed after that ordeal. The party downstairs has just started, without a hitch. It's on TV, if you want to watch.”

Elisabeth walked to the small couch, sitting down. She glanced down at her clothing or lack thereof. Time to decide what to do next.

Elisabeth turned on the television and listened to the reporter. He was prattling on about something regarding a business meeting. That was doubtless what Alexander was part of. That girl was part, too. She pulled the shirt off, tossing it to one side. The maid ignored Eric's whistle from across the room as she limped into the bedroom. Collapsing on the bed, she continued listening to the reporter discuss stocks with the female next to him. She gathered strength and motivation before pushing herself towards the closet. She began sifting through the various dresses, finally settling on a blue one. She pulled it off the rack, noting the various wigs on the opposite side of the closet. Disguises? She walked out of the closet and opened the dresser. The lingerie bottoms were large enough to fit her, but the bra was about 4 sizes too small. Deciding to give up the futile battle, she put on the dress and headed downstairs.

The channel had switched to a reporter at the party. He was a younger man, with brown hair and eyes. He was discussing things in a loud voice. Something about business deals and the possibility of the biggest corporate scandal of the year. The camera shifted, as a ruckus began in the far side. Elisabeth leaned forward, trying to see what was happening. There...was the old man. He was motioning for silence in the crowd, before securing the microphone on the stage.

“Hello, friends and rivals. We've all come here to measure whose is biggest, which is always a fun time. But, let's set aside all that bickering and nonsense for a moment so I can make a grand announcement. Come here, Henry.” Another, younger man walked forward onto the stage, handing Adam a glass of wine. Both toasted and took a drink, before addressing the crowd. “My son and Henry's daughter have decided to become engaged! This is worthy of a toast!”

The room began cheering, as the two kids walked up onto the stage. Cecilia stood taller than Alexander, her black hair reaching his shoulder. Elisabeth looked at Alexander, trying to gauge his expression. Determination and anticipation. He hadn't been forced into this. Elisabeth stared at the screen, as the reporter began speaking even feverishly, trying to explain the magnitude of what had just occurred. The screen suddenly shut off, as the cook sat down.

“Watching that's not going to help you, Elisabeth. Here, have something to eat.” He held out a plate with steak and fried vegetables. She took it, noticing the slight tremble in her hand. Was she disappointed with the young master? Was she angry? She didn't understand the emotions threatening to explode from within. The only thing she knew was that it stung, deep. Both began eating the food in silence, before a red light filled the room. Both winced, looking for the source of the light. Elisabeth's eyes widened when she saw it.

PREPARE YOURSELVES FOR THE HEIST OF A LIFETIME!!!!

The words scrolled across the electronic display opposite the hotel, finished with a rose symbol. Elisabeth began wolfing down the food, trying to ensure she'd have the energy for what came next. The cook paused in thought, before snapping his fingers.

“Ah! The Scarlet Tux! I didn't realize she was still operating anymore!”

“Her target's the banquet. We've got to get down there and stop that thief.” Elisabeth set the empty plate down, and looked around for her weapons. The cook pointed towards the table in the entryway. The maid rose shakily to her feet, trying to plan.

Elisabeth went back upstairs, searching the closet for anything else to help her disguise. She settled on a black wig that would cover up her blonde hair. There were colored contacts in a container in the bathroom. Eric made his way past her into the closet. When he came out, she didn't recognize the man. He now looked like a young business man. His hair was a well-combed blonde and his eyes were blue now. He had changed from his casual attire into a blue business suit. He noticed Elisabeth's disguise and walked over. Reaching over her shoulder, he tucked the few stray strands of blonde hair out of sight. Eric leaned forward and whispered in her ear.

“Mind me getting this close? We're going to pretend to be my sister and her boyfriend. They run a business in weapons, which is all I'm going to say. If we play it smooth, we should be fine. You have any idea what we're looking for here?”

Elisabeth stepped away from him and began walking towards the entryway. “None. No one has seen the face of the Scarlet Tux. All that's known is she is female, at least based on body shape and voice. She's been able to impersonate men in voice and costume in the past, which is why I don't trust it. The police are already here.” Elisabeth noted the very dim, but flashing lights through the window. She stopped to secure her Glock and secured it on the inside of her thigh. She strapped one of her small pouches onto her other thigh. She took a deep breath, doing her best to dispel the trembling in her muscles. Eric walked up behind her.

“Your name is Gabriel, Gabriel Cross. I'm Joseph Smith. Okay?” Elisabeth nodded as the two exited the room. There were five men outside, cleaning the blood stains off the wall. The bodies had been bagged up, and two men were arguing about how to dispose of them. The two walked to the elevator, ignoring the bullet holes in the glass. Hitting the button for the 50th floor, both stood in silence. The maid was already planning her approach.

When the elevator opened, Elisabeth was met by the sounds of police officers, angry crowds, and overall discomfort. The police had completely cordoned off this floor from the looks of it. When the two stepped away from the elevator, two officers approached them.

“Sir, ma'am, we'll need to see some form of identification. We've reason to believe an international criminal is hiding in this party, and need to confirm identities of anyone entering and leaving the area.” The taller police officer, who looked older, extended an open hand. Eric stepped forward, holding out a business card.

“My name is Joseph Smith. This is my fiance, Gabriel Cross. We were enjoying a steamy evening at the suite when we noticed the commotion. We couldn't pass up the chance to see the legendary Phantom Thief ourselves.” Eric grinned and spoke in a genuinely happy tone. The maid decided that playing poker with him was a bad idea. He leaned over her, tilting her chin up. The cook kissed her gently on the lips, before pulling her closer. He looked like he was continuing his kissing session. Both officers turned away, as Eric whispered in Elisabeth's ear. “We need a plan. What do you have?”

“First, gather info about what's going on. Something is going to be stolen. What is the question.” Elisabeth grabbed Eric's cheeks, pulling him to face her. Both nodded, before turning away from the police officers. Both parted ways after ensuring they had the correct numbers. Elisabeth's target wasn't just gathering information. She walked past the main auditorium and noticed Alexander and Cecilia. The girl had a suitcase open on the ground next to her. She had a laptop open and a remote next to it. Both seemed extremely expensive and important. Elisabeth walked into the auditorium, nodding towards the men who motioned for her to join them. She found her way to the edge of the crowd. Cecilia was speaking loudly, addressing the entire group.

“This new program of mine allows me to sense anyone lying or hiding within a 300 foot radius. It's not perfected, and there have been exceptions to the rules. But this should give us a tool to defend this area from the thief. Alexander?” Cecilia started the program and slid the laptop out. Alexander stood up next to her on the stage and spoke using the microphone. “I'd like every member of the audience to come in a single-file line. We'll examine each person individually. This seems to be the most efficient way to clear up this whole mess.”
>>
(2/2)
Elisabeth froze, as she realized she was part of the crowd Alexander was addressing. She started to break away, when a girl trying to get a better view of the laptop and stage tripped forward. She fell with a scream and Alexander moved. Diving forward, he caught the girl before she injured herself. The group cheered, as the girl thanked the young boy. Elisabeth smiled, realizing that the young master was in his element here. He was a leader. He wouldn't be in danger here.

“Are you really that happy, girl?” A piercing chill shot through Elisabeth's entire soul, as if an icy blade had been driven through her heart. She felt a cold sweat break out on her body, as the voice continued. “I came here to see what had become of my beautiful apprentice. I'd never dream she'd fall this far. Don't worry, though. I'm not here to kill you or your pets. I'm just here to keep you from hampering her. This hall could become a bloodbath in an instant, though. So, don't make any strange motions. Follow me to the smoking room. It's empty, save for the few men I had to put to sleep.”

Elisabeth looked at the young boy, who was starting to show signs of shock. Same for the girl who was his partner. The thief had already struck. She turned away, heading towards the smoking room. Good luck, young master. I have to deal with my past to protect your future.

She entered the smoking room and found herself facing an open room. All of the tables and chairs had been pushed to either side. One, large recliner took the central position, back towards her. The voice continued speaking, as Elisabeth struggled to maintain her composure.

“In all things, we forsake our emotions. Why? Because those emotions rob you of precious judgement that could spell the difference between a successful kill and our own death. I taught you this, Elisabeth. Why did you give up your successful life for...this?”

The voice was coming from the chair in front of her. She took a shuddering breath, deciding what avenue to take.

Elisabeth's eyes scanned the edges of the room, as she slowly walked forward. She drew the knives she'd concealed, palming both firmly. Stopping five feet behind the chair, she finally looked straight forward, towards the voice. The man continued speaking, voice as monotonous as when it began.

“I still recall that first day, when you came to me. A pitiful girl seeking something else. The biggest question in my mind that day was simple. Why had a girl with an ordinary life, good parents, and a future come to an assassin for training? I researched, of course. Had your parents done something evil? Was there bullies at your school you felt you could kill? Had anything traumatic happened in your past? The answer, of course, was laughable. There was nothing, except for a bored girl who didn't enjoy her boring life. You made me proud, learning everything I taught immediately and becoming one of the best. But you gave all of that up in one evening! You even succeeded with that assassination, but failed in the clean-up. Thus, here we are today. So, let me ask you, Elisabeth. Why?”

“It's an emotional thing. You wouldn't understand.” Elisabeth stepped forward, slamming her foot into the side of the chair. It spun to one side as she continued her motion forward. The maid buried both knives into the figure on the opposite side of the chair, ensuring the blades slipped past the ribs into the organs below. Her eyes widened, as she realized her mistake. There was a single, flashing speaker on the dead body's forehead. Judging by the flow of blood, it had been a while since the body had died. A slight, metallic ping, followed by the sound of a spoon being released, made Elisabeth step back in shock. Her gaze darted along the body, trying to figure out what had just changed. One of the corpse's arms shifted slightly, revealing a long, narrow cylinder. There was a loud Bang, followed by a flash. Elisabeth stumbled backwards, hands reaching out in an attempt to reorient herself. She saw a tall figure she recognized stepping out of the tables and chairs forced to one side. The man tossed a small communication device to one side, raising his hands in surrender. There was a smile on his face, as the old man continued closing the distance. He was...clapping? Her hearing was starting to return, which allowed her to hear his shouts from across the room. Why was he here?
>>
(2/2)
“Bravo, Elisabeth! You finally threw away what made you exceptional! I'm happy, though. I knew all along the assassin life wasn't for you. You were just a bored, lonely girl with no aspirations in life! You tried to fill that void with the act of taking lives, but to no avail. I think you make a much cuter impression in a maid's outfit. But, chatting isn't what I'm here for. Guess what this is.” The old assassin tossed a large envelope on the ground between them. Elisabeth was beginning to regain her senses fully. She recognized the envelope, though. It was the standard for contract killing; this was the means used to pay for contracts. “An angry woman paid me three million dollars to humiliate you this evening. Yes, not to kill, but humiliate. My partner has already stolen your precious master's sacred item and something from his fiance. It's my job to keep you from helping them. So, let's see if you kept up on your training.”

He reached into his belt, drawing a small butterfly knife. Elisabeth reached under the hem of her dress, hand pausing mid-motion.

Elisabeth's hand firmly grasped the hem of her dress, throwing the material upwards. Both hands darted downward, one securing three knives while the other firmly grasped her pistol. The maid shot forward as the old man brought his other hand up. She threw two of the knives in his direction, watching in irritation as he caught one and deflected the other.

“Impulsive, aren't you?” The old man questioned, still wearing the smile from before, as the maid halted her movement. She brought the pistol up, flicking off the safety. He darted to the side as she opened fire, using the chair and corpse as cover. Elisabeth then ran forward, grabbing the top of the chair firmly. She launched herself over the chair, rotating her entire body so she would land facing the old man. His eyes widened in appreciation as she landed and attacked. His knife pierced the air and the blades sparked as both assassins locked together. Elisabeth angled the pistol downwards to shoot the man's knee, but he changed the angle of the shot with his palm. He grabbed the slide as it slammed back, keeping the next round from loading. The maid noticed it and stepped backwards, but he stepped forward to match her retreat. “It's easy to predict your movement, Elisabeth. After all, I taught you all of this.”

His hand released the slide and grabbed Elisabeth's other arm. Before the maid could react, the old assassin turned, kicking her feet and lifting her over his back. She flew through the air, slamming into the wooden floor with a resounding boom. The air was driven from her lungs, as she struggled to move. The old assassin knelt next to her, shaking his head. “You know, meeting the client for the first time was a shock. She looked just like you. Really holds a grudge against you, Elisabeth. She also claimed you beat her. Not sure how, considering the gap between your abilities. She was a monster...and you are you.”

Roman...ov” Elisabeth managed to spit the words through her teeth, as she attempted to get back up. The change from before had taken too much of her energy and strength. She was trying to clear a hurdle that she'd never been able to before. Pushing herself up on one elbow, she glared at the old assassin. He only smiled, foot on her pistol and knife in his hand. She still had the pouch with the smoke bomb, poisons, and thread...but they would be useless now. She felt something cold under her thigh, where a dull burning was beginning. It was...the knife the old assassin had deflected onto the ground. She still had two more knives in her pouch and the one under her thigh. She tried to think of a plan, when a familiar theme started filling the air. It was the cellphone the cook had given her. At the same instant, a light illuminated Romanov's pocket, followed by a dull buzzing. What?

“You going to answer that? Because I need to take this call.” The old man kicked the pistol away from the pair before reaching into his jacket. He pulled out an old flip-phone and answered the call. Elisabeth slid away from the old assassin, ensuring she kept the knife trapped under her thigh. She pulled out the ringing phone and answered the call. Eric was already shouting on the other end.

“Where the hell are you!? Shit has started going down! Don't tell me you haven't heard anything!” Elisabeth's gaze darted around the room. Apparently, the sound-proofing was better than she'd anticipated. Narrowing her focus, she could hear the faint sound of screams and gunshots. Her attention returned to the phone as Eric continued ranting. “We'd almost pinpointed the identity of the Scarlet Tux, when Lavender's laptop went on the fritz! Then something activated in the display room! No one's died yet, but it's like a war zone out here! That thing has almost made it to the auditorium! Shit!”

The call suddenly hung up, as a shudder shook the room. Dust rained down from the ceiling, as the maid forced herself to stand. She searched the ground for her pistol frantically. She jumped and spun as Romanov suddenly spoke from behind her.

“My partner just called. She activated something she shouldn't have. Here's your pistol. I'll need to bail her out of there, and you'll need to protect your young master. Shall we team up once more, as master and apprentice?” He smiled slyly as he drew a revolver from his jacket.

“I'll shoot you the instant I've dealt with this issue. Any idea what's out there?” Elisabeth's tone was full of venom, as the maid secured her knives and began sprinting towards the door. The sound of bullets ricocheting became more pronounced, as she neared the heavy wooden doors. The old assassin walked up next to her, setting his palm against the lock.

“I'll let this next part be a surprise.” With that, the old man shoved the lock open. People sprinted inside, almost knocking the maid down as they fled from something outside. Her gaze traveled through the haze of smoke and dust, before reaching the target.

“What the fuck...?”
>>
“Your boy's fiance made robots, it'd seem. This one just went on the fritz for some reason. Now it's trying to break everything between it and the remote my comrade stole.” The old man began walking towards the law officials firing openly at the giant, metal humanoid.

The maid followed, noticing the cook on the opposite side of the auditorium. Where was the young...there! She found the young master, calmly discussing the situation with Lavender. The girl was hammering away at the keys on her laptop frantically. The look on her face was one of concern and determination. Whatever was happening, it would take time. The maid's gaze returned to the giant robot. It was made of some type of alloy that was bullet-proof. Why? It didn't have weapons, or it would be using them. This thought was cut off abruptly, as the robot grabbed the door it had torn free and threw it into the group of officials. Dust and debris was knocked into the air from the impact. After that, not a single member of the officials was stirring. An assault rifle had been knocked away by the impact. It was in the open. The cook finally stepped out of the shadows, his brown hair laced with sweat and dust. A woman she didn't recognize stepped out of the group trying to hide in the corner. She had a small bag on her arm. Romanov was still walking forward, but paused to throw a salute in the direction of the woman. Elisabeth paused, trying to think of the best way to do this.

The maid stood up straight, walking forward. All four walked closer to the robot, which was trying to pinpoint the location of the distress beacon. The woman in the dress pulled out a metal device that was blinking. Tossing it forward, the metal beacon clattered on the floor in front of the machine. It knelt slowly, reaching for the tiny device. The cook lowered his revolver as Romanov did the same.

“It was going after the beacon, like I thought!” The woman declared triumphantly. As she threw her hand up in celebration, the robot slammed its metal claw through the floor, destroying the beacon and wood. Her face paled, as both men opened fire. Their bullets did little, even when they targeted the joints. Elisabeth began searching the robot for some weakness. The thin slit in its head seemed to be its viewing device. How it worked was beyond the maid. She changed her aim, praying the device hadn't been reinforced. Firing a burst, she was rewarded by sparks and the robot stumbling back. Romanov and Eric changed their aim, focusing on the same spot. After all three emptied their ammunition on that point, they waited for the robot to move. It stood immobile, before slowly walking towards the large windows displaying the city landscape. It stopped moving, letting out a slow hiss. The trio with guns spread out, raising their weapons. A sudden voice called out from behind.

“Stop shooting! We've solved the issue!” Elisabeth froze, as she heard the young master's voice. Her gaze shot to the side, as the young boy walked between the group. He was accompanied by the taller girl, still holding her laptop. Alexander began walking towards the robot, with Cecilia hanging back with her laptop. What should Elisabeth do?

Elisabeth started to reach out, but noticed the glare from the cook. She slowly lowered her arm, forcing her trembling hand into a fist. She'd seen what that robot was capable of and was reluctant to let her master close to the huge, metal contraption. The young boy stopped in front of the robot, pulling a knife from his pocket. He began opening a metal plate on the chest of the robot. The two inch panel fell to the ground, exposing the inner circuits. He turned towards the girl in the purple dress.

“What now, Cecilia!?”

“Disconnect the green cable from the flashing panel! That should deactivate the power and prevent further motion!” The girl shouted, still frantically typing on the keyboard.

Elisabeth started circling around, worrying about everything that could possibly go wrong. The young boy reached into the robot, sweat shining on his brow as he searched for the proper wire. A look of satisfaction crossed his face, as the boy yanked a wire free. The robot visibly sagged forward, as the boy held the green wire aloft.

“Is this the right one!?”

“No!” Cecilia's cry wasn't quick enough. The robot suddenly staggered upwards, swinging it's arms wildly. One claw struck the glass, shattering the invisible panels and causing wind to surge through the room. The young master dodged the other claw, stumbling to the side as he slipped on the glass. All three girls moved, the maid, woman, and girl all reaching for the young boy as he tried to catch his balance on the edge of the precipice. His body was too far, though. A look of regret crossed his face, as he looked directly at Cecilia and shook his head. Don't cry for me. Those were the words he said, as he slipped off the edge of the roof. The woman in the red dress sprinted forward, diving under the berserk robot into the sky. Cecilia tripped, falling to her knees. Tears began sprinkling the ground, as the genius collapsed to her elbows and began sobbing. Elisabeth just stared at the robot, as Romanov and Eric sprinted backwards to escape. One of the two grabbed Cecilia to carry her to safety. Only Elisabeth remained standing there, staring at the giant, metallic monster who'd killed him. A single, shining tear ran down her cheek before falling off her chin. The burning had returned, even more pronounced than when she'd been shot. She would make this robot pay.

Elisabeth barely heard the cooks shout, as the robot barreled towards the woman. She could feel the rage building up inside, igniting something far darker than the previous shifts. The huge robot swung its claw towards her and she only threw one palm out. The ground shattered at her feet, as the bones in her hand shattered from the impact. But, the robot that hadn't been stopped by steel walls, heavy doors, or bullets, was rendered immobile by the maid. Stepping forward, the maid slammed her fist into the robot's arm. The metal crumpled inwards with an audible crunch, as every circuit and mechanism within was shattered. Elisabeth's hand ruptured from the impact, splattering blood on the metal robot. But, both of her injuries were already healing. The bipedal robot attempted to yank its ruined arm free, unsure about this tiny problem in its path.

“You're not getting away that easily, bastard.” Shifting her bloody hands, she grabbed the claws of the robot. With a roar, she ripped the claws free of the robot. The joints the claws had been attached to began twitching rapidly, as the torn wires visibly sparked. The robot was trying to register the damage, figure out a solution to this rapidly escalating issue. It swung its other arm towards the woman, in an attempt to sweep her away. Elisabeth changed her stance, burying both of the claws into the good arm of the robot. Her feet slipped and she was sent flying backwards by the force of the robot. She flew through the crowd of bystanders, slamming into the far wall with a boom. The robot stumbled backwards as both appendages shorted out. Without its arms, the program was struggling to figure out a solution. A voice called out from the group, as the gathered bystanders parted with cheers and whistles.

“I said...you're not getting away that easily.” Elisabeth shot forward, before slamming the robot towards the shattered window. The large, metal contraption staggered backwards from the impact, as the maid stepped forward, making a fist with her hand. The robot regained its balance, rising back to standing, as the maid thrust her fist forward with all of her force. Sparks ran across her skin as she sent her hand through the opening her master made, tearing through every wire and circuit board her hand struck. She felt something hot, a sphere of some sort, next to her fist. Opening her hand, she grabbed the sphere, before ripping her hand free. She was holding some sort of glowing sphere. The robot audibly powered down, which was received by cheers throughout the auditorium. The burning was already beginning to dissipate. Before it did, Elisabeth set one hand against the robot and shoved it through the window. She crushed the energy core in her fist, ignoring the surge of energy that almost paralyzed her. Dropping the ruined motor, she staggered forward. Her vision was beginning to blur, but the maid noticed Romanov saluting her, before he turned away. You...bastard!

“Elisabeth!” Eric caught the maid as she tripped, helping her to her knees. The woman began crying, clinging to the man. “Relax! The Scarlet Tux saved Alexander!”

“Huh?” Elisabeth looked up at Eric, ready to kill the man if he was joking. But, his gaze was sincere. Her eyes darted to where Romanov had stood. That was what the salute had been about? Her eyes went to Cecilia, who was holding a phone to her ear and sobbing. So...this story isn't over yet...my story isn't over yet.

A weary smile crossed Elisabeth's face, before the darkness took her.

------------

“Why did you save the heir?!” The woman shouted, glaring at Rachel. The thief leaned back in her chair, looking directly at the woman.

“You paid me to steal the ring. Here you go.” She tossed the ring onto the table then leaned forward, glaring at the blonde woman. “I didn't sign up to become a murderer. If my actions can save lives, I won't let them be in vain.”

“Dammit...this was my chance to break her completely.” The woman turned away, before whirling as Romanov laughed.

“If that maid knew you were behind this, she would find you and make your death as painful as possible. She is my best student, after all.” The old assassin continued laughing, before lighting a cigar he drew from his pocket. “I assume this is the end of our contract? I'd like to go back into retirement. Seeing that girl made me recall those things I said I don't have.”

“Fine. Both of you get out of my sight.” The blonde woman turned away, fury in her voice. Both the girl and the old assassin walked out of the room, leaving her alone. A lone man strolled out of the darkness, before taking a seat.

“Do you have any other plans, Angel?”

“Just a few. I will have my revenge.”

Elisabeth's eyes opened slowly. Her entire body was sore. She tried to recall what had transpired before she had passed out. Sitting up in her bed, the maid realized she wasn't wearing any clothes. Whichever of the girls kept doing this needed to be questioned. She pushed herself up and stepped out of her bed. Elisabeth stumbled towards the door, as the fears she could recall from the evening before came surging up. She yanked the door open and ran face first into the young master. They crashed onto the wooden floor together.

“Elisabeth?!”

“Young master...you're okay?” Elisabeth's hands gripped his cheeks, before probing his body in a search for injuries. She could feel tears forming in her eyes, as she gripped the young boy close to her chest. “I'm so happy!”

“Elisabeth...please let go of me.” The young master's voice was muffled by her chest. The maid released her grip and the boy gasped for air. He looked up at Elisabeth, face flushed red. “It's good you're awake, Elisabeth, but doing this is...extremely inappropriate!”

The maid separated from the boy, who rose to his feet. His gaze traveled upwards, as he muttered. “The party went over without a hitch. I came back and the other staff members said you'd fallen down the staircase. I'm glad you're fine now.”

“That's good, young master.” Elisabeth's sincere smile made the young master blush more. He pulled off his jacket and tossed it on her nude body. Then he sighed.

“You can have the rest of the day off, Elisabeth. Enjoy it.”
