You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you had all made a brief stopover in Pearl Harbor on your way to the main battlefield of Japan. While everybody was busy trying to get your transport plane refueled and getting everything restocked, you decided to show the relative newcomers Dorsetshire, Graf Spee, and you guess Kidd around the base for a bit.

And the first place you decided to take them was to Mulberry's. Last you saw, she was still asleep from all the stress of taking Midway, but you heard that she's recently gotten back up on her feet again, which was real great news. It's been waaaaay too long since you've seen her.

And from other things you heard, she also had a much better understanding of the Abyssals and the current "situation" .

Well, first things first! It was still early in the morning when you landed, and that meant beating the breakfast rush!

"C'mon! We gotta hurry!" You grin as you grab both Dorsetshire and Graf Spee's hands as you practically tow the two heavy cruisers behind you in your wake. Already you could see visions of impossibly fluffy pancakes and crispy bacon. Hell, even now, you can smell the faint aroma.

And it seems Kidd's noticed it too, as her nose perks up.

"I be smelling chow!" She yips excitedly as she dashes ahead of you so fast that Pepe actually falls off her hat and he starts flapping after her, chirping angrily.

Damn that pirate!

However, the three of you manage to reach Mulberry's cafe, and it looked fairly empty. Cool, you were ahead of the crowd!

You open the familiar wooden door, and the full might of Mulberry's cooking hits you like a storm front, the fresh smells assaulting not just your nostrils, but every inch of your body as well. It was great to be home, even if only for a little while!

Dorsetshire and Graf Spee were equally, possibly even more floored by the sudden exposure to good old fashioned cooking. They just stand there, speechless and motionless. Hell, you swear you can even see tears dripping down Graf Spee's good eye.

"Oh, Hoel! It's been too long!" Mulberry says happily as she strides out of the kitchen, her heeled boots clicking against the tile. "Oh, and you brought guests! Erm... Dorsetshire and Graf Spee, correct?"

Jeez, you didn't know how Mulberry could seem to recognize any ship on sight, even ones she'd never actually seen before.

"U-um, yes, that's correct!" Confronted by a fellow Brit, Dorsetshire quickly regains her proper posture and expression, quickly readjusting her officer's cap.

"Danke." Graf Spee just nods absentmindedly.

Oddly enough, Kidd was nowhere to be seen.

"Well, just take a seat and I'll have breakfast out right away! All of you must be absolutely famished!" Mulberry chuckles as she turns back to the kitchen.

"Schiesse, I didn't realize how hungry I was." Graf mumbles with a bit of embarrassment as her stomach grumbles loudly.

"It's a bit comforting to know there's still a little piece of the Empire on this far corner of the world." Dorsetshire smiles fondly.

You decide to stick with Dorsie and Graf. Looking at the table, you can see Mulberry's fairies already bringing in drinks and appetizers. Tea and muffins for Dorsie, and hot coffee and strudels for Graf. And as always, you got some orange juice and pop tarts. Mulberry truly was prepared for everything!

"I find it odd that a British mobile dock would be, of all things, cooking for American ships in Pearl Harbor." Graf observes as she casually sips her coffee, trying to hide her shivers of delight.

"I do, too." Dorsie nods as she calmly sips her tea, her mouth twitching ever so slightly as she tries to hide how good it is. "I would have thought that she'd be supporting operations in the North Sea, not the Pacific.

"Pretty sure the Admiral pulled all sorts of strings to get her here." You shrug as you gulp down your orange juice. Fresh squeezed, not that crap from the store. "I mean, he managed to convince your own navies to let you tag along with us, right?"

"I suppose." Graf frowns.

"I've heard rumors about your Admiral." Dorsie nods. "About how he's always been able to get what he needs when he needs it. I can't imagine the sacrifices he's had to make, though."

"Yeah, well, that doesn't change the fact that she's ours now, and ya can't have her back!" You stick out your tongue. "I'll fight you, the Royal Navy, the Kriegsmarine, or Reichsmarine, or Bundesmarine or whatever the fuck the German navy is calling itself these days!"

"Don't pick fights you can't win, you little schurke." Graf chuckles.

"I'd rather avoid unnecessary conflict, thank you very much. "Dorsie munches on a muffin.

This was odd. Mulberry should have been out by now. She was always an extremely quick and efficient cook.

"Hey, I'll be back in a sec." You say to Dorsie and Graf as you leap over the bar and head for the back kitchen area. You were just going to have a quick little peek.

And that's when you see it.

There was Kidd, who was, OF FUCKING COURSE, raiding (or at least trying to raid) the freezer. You could several tubs of ice cream nestled securely under her arm. However, she wasn't as sneaky as she thought she was, since standing in her way was Mulberry, who, to her credit, didn't look mad at all.

Well, at least not you.

"Kidd, wasn't it?" Mulberry asks sweetly. "How about you put that ice cream back and we can all go back and have some breakfast!"

"Never!" Kidd says defiantly, waving her cutlass around. "I be following the pirate code! Take everything and give nothing back!"

As this exchange was going on, you acutely note that Pepe had sided with Mulberry, nestling comfortably in her bonnet.

And that's when you notice Mulberry's smile widen. Not a good sign.

You decide... not to intervene. Sure, Kidd was a fellow sister ship, but you've never ever seen Mulberry angry. Hell, even Luce, Daly, and Wren had enough sense not to risk antagonizing her.

"Ah, so you want to be a pirate then, right?" Mulberry's smile widens in a sadistic fashion as she strides forward.

Kidd's cutlass wavers and shakes as she tries to keep a grip on it, but with one smooth motion, Mulberry bats the weapon aside, sending it clattering away on the floor. Pepe quickly evacuates and settles himself on your shoulder.

Meanwhile, Mulberry continues advancing on Kidd, backing her into a figurative and literal corner. The mobile dock seems to have grown a few sizes as she she leans down on the cowering Kidd, that same smile on her pale face.

"Kidd." She says sweetly. "Do you know what the Royal Navy used to do to pirates when they caught them?"

"N-n-n-no." Kidd stammers, too afraid to even shake her head.

"Well, it was simple." Mulberry runs a finger up Kidd's chest and prods her right in the throat. "Hanged. Until. Dead."

"Okayyouhavetheicecreamback"! Kidd wails as sets the stolen tubs down at Mulberry's feet and immediately curls up into a fetal ball.

You gotta admit, you almost peed yourself a little just watching that whole episode.

"See? Wasn't it easy to do the right thing?" Mulberry instantly reverts back to her normal, cheery self, even though her outward expression didn't change at all. She then gently picks up Kidd like a newborn kitten and turns to you.

"Now then, let's have breakfast, shall we?"

Dorsie and Graf don't ask anything when the three of you return to the front, and none of you say anything. Kidd just sits in her seat, straight as a rail, though she softens up a bit back to her normal self once she gets some food in her. For her part, Mulberry doesn't hold any grudges, and serves Kidd the same as she would any other customer.

"So how do you like it?" Mulberry asks innocently as she watches you all wolf down your breakfasts.

You just give your normal thumbs up.

"Quite excellent." Dorsie says matter of factly.

"Heavenly." Graf sighs contently.

"I-It was good." Kidd mumbles, still intimidated.

"Why, thank you!" Mulberry smiles as she ruffles Kidd's hair. "Just remember to behave next time, all right?"

"Y-yes ma'am." Kidd nods a little too rapidly.

Well, you haven't had any calls from the Captain yet, so you guess you still had some time.

You decide now would be a great time to check in on the Admiral, and you know, catch up with Sam since it's felt like forever that you've seen each other.

"Hey, how about we go and pay the Admiral a visit?" You suggest to your guests. "You can see him in the flesh and everything! How's that sound!"

"That sounds marvelous." Dorsie nods with a smile. "I always did want to see the Hero of Pearl Harbor."

"Hm? I suppose." Graf shrugs. "Thought I don't know what that whole 'Hero' thing is about."

"Ah right, you've only just come back." Dorsie nods. "You can say he was the man who saved Pearl Harbor from falling to the Abyssals.

"Though he'd never admit that. He'll always give the credit to Sammy." Mulberry chimes in. "She's always had a knack for dramatic timing."

"Sammy? You mean THE Samuel B. Roberts?!" Kidd's eye lights up.

"The one and the same." You nod smugly.

"Well then let's gooooo! Full sail ahead!" Kidd yells as she strides out the door.

The four of you give Mulberry a farewell wave as you all take your leave and head over the the main administration hall. Man, it's been so long since you've seen Sam, maybe you should "surprise" her...

"SURPRISE MOTHERFUCKER!" You yell as you kick down the door leading to the foyer in front of the the Admiral's office, where Sam was usually set up. You hear a loud shriek as Sam is genuinely caught by surprise as she stopples backward from her desk. Apparently she was just lazing around like always, playing something on her phone. She falls flat on her back with a loud CRASH, sending her phone and piles of paperwork flying everywhere like a blizzard.

"FUCK YOU, HOEL!" Sam wails as she tries to scramble back to her feet.

"Haha! Ya got her good!" Kidd laughs.

Dorsie just stays silent, with an awkward expression, clearly unsure of how to react in this situation and defaulting to her British stoicism. Graf has an amused smile on her face, like a proud aunt.

"Hello to you, too, Sam." You laugh as you round the desk to help her up.

And that's when the Admiral steps out of his office and takes one look at you and the toppled over Sam.

Everybody braces for a sharp reprimand that never comes.

Instead, the Admiral just bends over and starts laughing uncontrollably, his gray beard ruffling with every laugh as he wipes tears from his eyes.

"Admiraaaaaaal, this isn't funny!" Sam whines as she finally scrambles to her feet, nearly slipping on some paper caught under her feet.

"I beg to differ!" The Admiral chortles. And for a moment, you seem to see a glimpse of.. something behind the Admiral's facade of command. A genuine warmth that he feels towards Sam, beyond just a officer/shipgirl or boss/secretary relationship. It was something... more.

But the moment is fleeting, and it's gone before you can get a full grasp of what it was.

"Jeez, Hoel, you had to choose the worst time to barge in." Sam groans as she starts picking up her scattered paperwork. Kidd bends down to help, obviously trying to ingratiate herself with Sam while the Admiral makes his way over to Dorsie and Graf to properly introduce himself.

You bend down and start helping Sam pick up all the dropped paperwork. You guess that it's the least you can do.

"So, how are things going here?" You ask.

"Every since you all left? Boring as fuck." Sam rolls her eyes. "I kinda miss the bombing raids on Pearl Harbor in a sick, twisted sort of way."

"C'mon, it can't be all that bad." You grin as you pick up a stack of papers. You only take a casual glance, but something catches your eye. Budget requests from Science Division?

All right, maybe you could glean some clues as to what the hell Vahlen was up to. After all, she DID create Woel, and she and her Science goons were still going around rounding up Abyssal corpses and "specimens". Something was definitely up and maybe you could get a clue from these papers...

You dig through the papers trying to analyze all of the technical and bureaucratic jargon in an effort to glean some kind of meaning from them. While the vast majority of the papers were just junk, you did catch sight of something interesting.

Apparently, the Science Division was calling for funds to be allocated to construction of a ship called the USS Pacifica and it was... exorbitantly expensive. You don't even know how to pronounce all those zeroes!

But more interestingly, the construction start date and commissioning didn't seem to be right. They were set to be the same year!

And something was telling you that it wasn't a clerical error.

"Hey, Hoel, is something wrong?" Sam raises an eyebrow as she and Kidd restack some of the dropped papers onto her desk.

Sounds like a rush job. How'd they even get the funding for that?

Hoohoo? so they to experiment to see if they could bring out modern shipgirls that way?

Please--we all know the endgame here is the government artificially creating its own Abyssals shipgirls--a perfectly designed, perfectly controllable army that will answer every request made by its masters to a "t"

You decide to keep it close to chest for now and not say anything.

"Nah, just a LOT of papers to pick up!" You laugh it off as you plop down a stack back onto Sam's desk. "Jesus, how the hell did you get such a backlog."

"Ah, well, we're just taking care of last minute stuff before we head out to Japan." Sam shrugs.

"Wait, you're going?" You blink.

"Of course, with the Admiral." Sam blinks back. "Nobody told you?"

"Apparently not." You frown. "So you're all coming with us?"

"Yep! And a bunch of the other heavy hitters, too!" Sam grins. "Looks like whatever the Admiral's got planned, it's gonna be big!"

"He didn't tell you?"

"Ah, well, he's annoying tight lipped when it comes to his battle plans." Sam rolls her eyes. "He's always kinda like that."

"I see..." You frown.

"Hey hey hey! Sammy!" Kidd bounces up and down. "Can ye show me how ye use that anchor of yours!?"

"Aaaahhh, sure, I guess." Sam chuckles and waves to you. "Guess I'll see ya later, Hoel!"

"Yeah, see ya." You nod absentmindedly.

Dorsie and Graf were still engaged with the Admiral, talking about big ship stuff, you suppose, leaving you alone for the moment.

Well it looked like the "drydock" for this Pacifica project was being set up right here in Pearl Harbor, according to the documents. That meant you could do a bit of investigating on your own!

Then again, the place was sure to have high security like Vahlen's lab. You doubt you could just walk right in there, at least not on your own...

You can totally do this alone. No need to get anybody else involved. Plus, if you did indeed get caught, they could just pin the blame on you and not on any of your friends or sisters.

And you were a shipgirl. What could they possibly do to you anyways?

The drydock was easy enough to find, since it was right there in the harbor, and rather conspicuous given that the entire structure was covered under a massive white tent, like some sort of quarantine area. All around, you could see that the general area was penned in by a chain link, barb wire fence and guards regularly patrolling the perimeter. They were just armed with regular rifles, with the odd dog or two. Nothing that you couldn't really deal with if you got caught.

Then again, the drydock was right there on the shoreline, and you were a shipgirl...

You decide to try and sneak in from the ground. From your vantage point, you could already see all of the guard patterns and rotations, and you think you can see a gap in their coverage. After all, it looks like the drydock was hastily constructed, and it didn't have a proper security system in place.

Perfect.

Seeing your opening after the current patrol passes you by, you take a deep breath and move forward.

And, as luck would have it, you find that there's a gap in the fence near the shoreline, where the water met the ground. Looks like in their haste to build the drydock, they forgot to close this section off. You easily slip your way through the gap, and with even more luck, find that some careless guard had left a side door open, meaning you wouldn't even have to break your way in.

The inside the tent was still a flurry of activity. Construction workers and scientists dashed to and fro, trying to finish whatever it was they were doing as quickly as possible. Down in the drydock, you could see lots of covered up machinery that was currently being neglected. Up above, you could see a control center being set up, with large servers and computers full of data being hooked up. And finally, you caught sight of Vahlen herself pacing around the drydock with purpose. No doubt managing the construction.

You jump down into the drydock pit. There's not really anybody down here, so you don't any fear of being detected. You sneak over to the tarped up machinery, grab the edge of one of the tarps, and gently pull it down...

You pull off the tarp to reveal a number of crates. Most of them were unmarked, so you couldn't tell what exactly was in them, and you didn't want to risk alerting anybody by trying to break the crates open.

However, there is one bit of machinery that you recognize. There, suspended over the ground by chains, is a Rig. It was definitely incomplete, being only a simple hull and nothing more. However, the presence of this Rig told you all you needed to know. Pacifica wasn't a ship.

She was a shipgirl.
