"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry..."

The young girl continues to sob as you dress her in clean clothes. Her ashen tatters slowly flake off of her body with every touch.
She's covered in ash, dirt, mud, and she's crying. She is filthy, but at the very least; her clothes are clean.

You are Yuuki Kuchinashi, and you are the big sister to this small family of heroes. It reminds you of home, in a lot of ways. Calming down crying little children was something of a duty for you. The more things change, the more things stay the same.
Though, admittedly, there was much less fire being thrown around in your previous household.

You rub Kayda's scalp with a towel. The bits of dirt and mud used as a shield against her significant firepower cling tightly to the strands.
It's been a tough day for her.

Aside from the fire and the fighting; it's been a day of exhaustion for everyone. Kayda, here, was implanted with some kind of ring which controlled her mind. You were tasked with questioning her summoner to find out about it, and to find a way to solve it.
Fortunately, you were able to find help for that problem from an outside source of whom you will profusely thank when this is all over.

Then, there was the ring. You, also, have an identical ring to the one that was implanted in her neck. As difficult as it was; you were able to use it to wrangle some control away from whatever entity had taken ahold of Kayda's mind.

Kayda's mind; that was unpleasant to visit. It seems she has been tormented by that mysterious person for some time, and only now was inflicted with just the right combination of magic to let them take control. You can still feel the haunting feeling of her fears, anxiety, and loathing as felt through the ring. If that experience was even half as draining on you as it was on her, then she must be exhausted right now.

Oh shoot, you just remembered Kayda's summoner. After you questioned them, their Maid immediately escaped and took Kayda's summoner with her. This is something that you haven't told Kayda yet.
It might be a poor idea to tell her right now; when she's in this state.

"I'm sorry..." She whimpers once more, into your dress. Gently, you lay her onto the bed.

"You need to rest, Kayda."
"No! No. no. no. No rest." Kayda squeaks. "I'm sorry, but, please, no. I don't want to see her again."

>"Who is 'her'?"
>"Please, go to sleep."
>"Here, I'll lay right here until you're asleep. I promise."

"'Her'?" You ask, blinking. "Who is 'her'?"

"Oh, just forget it." Kayda flops down onto the bed. "Good night."
"Kayda." You sit her up, and her expression is sour. "No more running away from your problems. Tell me who this 'her' is."

She pauses, and suddenly averts her eyes away from you.
"If I tell you, she'll hear me."

"The ring is gone, Kayda." You frown, "It's that maid, isn't it?"

"..I never wanted to say anything about it." Kayda turns away, and lays back onto the bed. "Because I thought you wouldn't trust me if you knew."
"What would make you think such a thing?!" You close the distance between the two of you. Gently, you squeeze around her ash-covered body. "Why would I ever not trust you because of the maid? I saw what she did to you! To your mind!"

"Because.. I asked for the ring to be put in!"

Your heart skips a beat. Kayda shifts uncomfortably in your arms.

"It was when everyone had left to the nothern villages." She cushions her face into your chest, "She told me she didn't trust me with Greta because I'd been so careless. I told her I'd do anything to win her trust; that's when she gave me the ring."

"Why didn't you tell her 'no'?"
"She had talked about it in the past, about replacing me." Kayda squirms, trying to push away. "That's why I wanted to do it. I wanted her to know that she could trust me and that I was still useful. I thought with the ring, I could prove to her that I'm strong and that I could take anything that happened."

Kayda gives up her struggle, and silently collapses into the hug.
"If you're mad at me or if you don't like me anymore, then that's okay. Just tell me to leave and I'll disappear and never come back, I promise."

"Kayda."
"WHAT?!"

"Please just sleep." You keep her in your grasp, "Please get some rest, you're very tired and I don't want you to overdo yourself."
"I don't want to sleep. If I sleep I might dream about HER again, and I rather die."

"Kayda, I'll lay right here with you until you're asleep. Is that okay?"

She refrains from saying anything. Instead, she lightly gives up her grasp, and gently sighs.
Kayda's breathing starts to deepen, and her eyes close. Within the span of several minutes; she's asleep.

She must be almost as tired as you are. You catch yourself almost drifting to sleep a time or two. You quickly remind yourself that you can't sleep yet; you have a mystery man to meet later about the ring.

Right, the meeting. You promised a certain someone that you would meet them, and this might be the only lead you have as to where the ring comes from.
By extension, it might be the only lead you have to finding where that maid took Kayda's summoner.

>Slowly get up, as to not wake up Kayda. Then think about what you're going to ask this mystery person while you wait for Jack and Tuile to come back.
>I won't be sleeping, I'm just resting my eyes.
>Put the ring on, see if you can talk to this person.

Gently, you shift your weight on the bed to not disturb Kayda.

Using the superior strength you have in your lower body; you manage to gently raise yourself above the bed using only your feet. You pull yourself above the bed, and walk over to the chair.

Kayda is so pretty when she's sleeping. Why would she ever think that no one would ever want to see her smiling face again? What would her father think? Kayda used to tell you about her father and what he thought of her.
You wish you could send her back to him. Maybe she could be happy again.

You sigh, and adjust the curtain of hair tangled on your scalp. You haven't told anyone, but the hair on your head has been growing at a rapid rate. Not just growing in length; but thickness, density, and texture. You wonder if Kayda or Louise are having this problem, but just aren't saying anything.

What are you even going to tell this 'Number sixteen' person when you see them?
'Sorry, I'd love to help in your 'investigation' but I have a young hero to take care of?'

Or how about, 'I'd love to help, but there's absolutely nothing about Gallete I really care about excluding of course Louise?'

Geez, you're starting to sound more and more like Jack.

Speaking of Jack, there's a light tap at the door. That must be them, now. You stand up and gently tip-toe to the entrance.

"(Hello?)"
"(Hey Yuuki, can I come in?)"

Strangely enough, it's just Tuile. There's no Jack in sight.

"(Where's Jack?)"
"(He, uh, drank too much. Went to bed.)"

Of course.
Of course he would.

"(You can go to the meet, now. I'll be sure to keep Kayda company)"

>Uh, Let's step out into the hallway and talk, first.
>Quick question before I go. What was Biscotti.. planning to do regarding Kayda?
>She's not going to be arrested, right?
>Okay, thanks Tuile, I'll talk to you later.

"(Let's step out in the hallway, I got a quick question.)"

"(Well, Okay.)"

You both gently walk out into the stone corridor.

"Okay, first off-" You cross your arms at her. "Who are you?"
She blinks, "Tuile Di Biscotti."

"And- What is Jack's full name?"

She blinks, "Uh. What is this about?"
"What is his full name?"

There's a light blush on her cheeks, and then she adjusts her voice.
"Jack Firianno Albator."

Woh, you didn't realize he had a middle name. At least, if he did; he never told you.

"Uh, okay. I guess that settles it. Sorry, Tuile. I'm just paranoid about spies and body doubles and-"
"No, no, it's okay. It does seem rather suspicious that I would just mysteriously lose Jack like that. He just doesn't know when to quit, though." She pouts. "I told him to stay sober and he decided to have another one or nine rounds, I lost count."

Well, with that out of the way-
"What were you going to do with Kayda?"
"Mm?"

"I mean- What is Biscotti going to do with Kayda?" You seem sad, suddenly. "I mean, she went on a rampage in the castle, attacked the heroes, and had a ring on her. You weren't going to.. interrogate her or anything, right?"

Tuile smirks, slightly.
"You're such a big sister."

What is that supposed to mean?!

"Now, now, calm down." Tuile smiles. "I didn't mean that as an insult. You're just so protective sometimes. Trust me, Biscotti isn't going to do anything because most people aren't even aware of what happened. There's rumors of another assassing or a demon attacking that was put down by the heroes. Nothing about Kayda at all."
"Really? Oh, oh thank you."

"You should be more worried about what you're going to say when you see this person." Tuile crosses her arms. "Do you even know what you're going to see him about? What are you going to ask?"

>I don't know.
>I'll worry about that when I see him.

I'll see what I can do tomorrow. I just found from the last couple of threads that running three days in a row results in a kind of 'burn-out' where there is only one person posting on the last day. So I thought just running twice a week at a set time for a set duration may fix that somewhat. Let's see how my schedule looks tomorrow

Next post almost done.

"I don't know. There's too many unknowns." You cough lightly. "I guess I would ask about the organization; their organization and the one who I was assigned to. Then work my way from there."

Tuile crosses her arms with a light frown.

"Well, what would YOU suggest?" You pout. Tuile smirks slightly.

"First off, I would get their name."
"Okay, granted."

"Second off." Tuile's twitches slightly, "If they don't know anything about what happened to Kayda. Tell them to forget it and that they're on their own."
You tilt your head, "Why?"

"Because." She furrows her brow, "You have important hero stuff to do, one of your heroes is hurt, and I can tell you're stressed out already. Just look at you."

Look at me?

Tuile points to my face, "You're getting bags under your eyes, BAGS! I didn't even know heroes could get that. Your hair is a tangled mess, what have you been doing with it? But most of all, Louise told me you've been forgetting small things all day."

"And?"
"You need rest, Yuuki. Jack needs rest. Everyone needs to rest, and I worry that trying to solve lots of little problems will make it impossible for everyone to tackle a big problem if it arises. Just tell this person that he can wait on his little operation if he can't do anything for you right now."

"What if he can?"
"Then.. you'll just have to play along. But look at it this way: You could get Jack involved at that point, because then it would be hero business. It would involve getting Kayda's summoner back."
"So you think I should get Jack involved?"

"Of course. I think you shouldn't have tried to take this on alone to begin with."
"I just thought-"

You try to think about what exactly you were thinking when this came up.
"-I just thought it would be a small job. Like, Jack lots of small jobs, all the time! So I could handle just one, right?"

"Jack would like help on those jobs, too."

You blink.
"He would?"

"He would, but he doesn't say it." Tuile smiles, "I think Jack would love nothing more than if everyone came together to lend him a hand."

You let those words hang in your mind for a moment, before going your separate way.
"Thank you Tuile. I'll consider it."
"Please do."

People continue to walk into the crowded bar. Each one seems to be paired with another person in conversation.

If you're hoping to stand out here and find this number '16'; then you might be out of luck.

You give into the urge and reach into your pocket.
Let's hope you don't suddenly black out and start spitting fire, either.

-Six
Four?
Eight.
One?
Three to all, Where is Number One?
Six to Three, Two is gone, too.
Eight to Five, Your response?

Ugh, it's like having a dining room inside of your head.
Quietly, you concentrate on the ring.

Forty to Sixteen?

Some chatters, most of it not relating to you. You are curious who One and Two are supposed to be, because they've apparently disappeared.

Sixteen to forty, go ahead
I'm outside. I'm coming in.

Understood, see you soon!

Ugh, the way he says that all cheery just makes you want to wipe the floor with his smile.

You walk in, and you can almost feel a shiver run up your spine.
It doesn't help that you can feel multiple pairs of eyes upon you. You should have wore something a little more concealing than your standard outfit.

You find an empty seat, and sit down.
The eyes return to their own business, and it soon feels as if you aren't even there.

Suddenly, before you can even blink, a blue-quilted scarf flashes in front of your vision.
A young lady sits at the table across from you. She wears a plaid hat, and has all sorts of various tools and instruments lining her front and side pockets.

"Ms. Kuchinashi, I presume?" She sits up straight, before smiling, "Oh, sorry. 'Bartholomeo', right?"

Already, she gives you a reason to hate her.

"Do I even have to ask who you are?" You cross your arms, and lean back.
"I suppose not, but I feel I should introduce myself."

The mysterious person takes off her hat, and reveals a set of two black cat-ears.

"Detective Suzette of Gallete's royal guard, at your service." She does a small bow at the table.

You frown, "And I'm Lord General Bartholomeo, but I guess you already knew that."

The laughs, "Oh, Ms. Kuchinashi, I was under the impression that you didn't have sense of humor!"
"I don't."
"Sure, sure." She smiles, and then places her hat back on her head. "So, you said you wanted to meet with me. Surely, It was about the attack on the young hero earlier, right?"

"How do you know about that?" You slap your hand on the table.

"Well, it was hard to miss. A white-haired kid carrying what appears to be a living fireball all the way to Biscotti castle. I'm sure you would have noticed on your own if you were awake this morning."

This sets off a nerve, for some reason.
"..You were the one who woke me up, weren't you?"

"But of course." She smiles, "I knew you needed your beauty sleep. When the whole kidnapping thing was about to happen; I tried to contact you anyway you could. Thank god you kept your ring on."

"Mm, that's nice and all."
You feel a wild hair stand up on the back of your neck.
"But if you knew there was going to be a kidnapping why DIDN'T YOU TRY TO STOP IT?!"

"I did! I did. Listen, the ring is a great tool to listen in on what undesirables are planning, but it's not magic. It doesn't tell me everything."

'It's not magic?'
You cross your arms, and give her a look.

She smiles, and blushes. "Okay, okay, maybe it is magic. But it's not going to tell me what's going to happen. Besides, I wasn't even there when things went down. I had to send a messenger to the guards."

"That's convenient."
"Isn't it?" She smiles, not picking up your sarcasm.

"Then." You sit upright, and lean in toward her. "Let's talk about this investigation you have going on."

"Fine. What do you want to talk about?"

"Simply put." You put both arms on the table, "Tell me everything you know about it, or I'm not helping."

She seems taken aback by this.
"..You want more info on this? I thought you were going to ask to get out of it."
"Is that a problem?"

"No! No, it's just-" She flops something down on the table. It's a small bag. "I had packed this full of evidence as to why you should be helping me, because I expected you to say no."

"Great, show me anyway." You reach for the bag, "I want to know every single thing you know about it."

"Now, now, hold on. This is evidence, after all." She pulls the back away, and opens the snap on top. "I'll explain any question you ask me."

"Great, then let's start at the top. You're Gallete Royal Guard, right?"
"Well.. yes."

"Wonderful."

You reach over and grab your naginata. Gently, you lay it down on the table.
"Tell me exactly what the deal with Elise is."

"Elise?"

"The girl, in the dungeon, under Gallete." You appear less amused by the minute. "You're part of the guard, which means you were part of the system that kept a little girl in prison. So, I want answers about that, first. If you call for backup or try to run away, then I know exactly where this is going."

She appears genuinely confused for a minute, even cocking her head to symbolize her confusion.
Suddenly, her eyes light up.
"Ohh! I know who you're talking about!" Suzette reaches into the bag. "Right! That's one of the things I wanted to show you."

She reaches into the bag, and pulls out a tiny locket. One in the symbol of a heart.
It flips open, and a familiar painting is on the inset.

"This is the same painting that's inside of the lockett on Elise's neck." You blink.
"Really? It shouldn't be exactly the same. This is the first lockett I know of."

You examine the picture again, and then notice something strange.
This lockett doesn't just have her. It has Charlotte! She's the tall one in the center! Then, there's a black-haired boy next to Elise.
Could that be.. the boy claiming to be her brother?

Suzette puts the lockett back in the bag.
"Several months ago," She adjusts her voice. "I learned that the royal family may have been bigger than anticipated. From there, I learned a great deal about the parts of Gallete I lacked the rank to see." She smiles, "This began my investigation. Several months after I found this lockett, I learned of the spotted tails. A group of nobility in Gallete who were planning to replace Charlotte. I didn't know how at the time, until I found out about this 'Elise'."

"If you knew about her, why didn't you rescue her?!"
"I knew ABOUT her, but nothing about where she was or if she was even living in Gallete. Honestly, at first, I thought she was in on it! I learned later that this plan was in the making before she was even born."

"That's convenient for you."
"Well, it is! Isn't it?" She smiles in a sort-of ditsy way. "The further I got into this, the more I started to realize that this spanned more than Gallete."

"Explain."
"Other kingdoms! They were planning on doing the same thing. Gallete, Konditorei, even Biscotti had plans to replace their ruling families."

Well, it's been a long time since some of this was covered, so I'll tell you what Yuuki does know:

-There is a plot to overthrow the Gallete Royalty
-It did involve using Esther
-Bear-land was involved in it

The rest is totally new to Yuuki. Make of that what you will. Feel free to call it bullshit.

Thank you, been hard to keep track of everything.

So I read your latest post on twitter... is it really that bad, Announcer?
>>
>I don't believe you
>I don't see how this relates to what happened today

It's sore, still. Fortunately, repeated hits of hot water and compresses has reduced the pain down to a minor throbbing. I'll probably be okay by tomorrow.

for a while, I could hardly walk.
It's kind of taken its toll on this thread hence the two story posts. Hard to think of story while leg is screaming at me.

"I don't believe you." You give her the evil eye.
She visibly notices your frustration and seems wilt a little.

"Got any proof?"
"Of course!" She reaches into her bag. "I got plenty of documents on their correspondence, their meeting times, minutes, even logs of their meetings! Even some documents I took had royal seals on them! Look!"

She shuffles through some papers, briefly showing each one. Some of them having a very distinct stamp on the pages.
Unfortunately, this doesn't mean much to you.

"Okay. They have stamps."
"Those are royal seals! Each one is supposed to be different in their own little way. Supposidly, these seals are different because you're supposed to be able to use them to find the person who stamped it."

You're skeptical.
"Even if that's true, what does this have to do with what happened today?"

She frowns, and then sighs.
"I swear, you're worse than my chief. Have you been talking to him? Because that's exactly what he said when I showed him these papers."

"He sounds like a smart man." You cross your arms, "So what does this have to do with today?"

"I'm getting to that." She stacks the papers, and puts them away. "Now, what happened today was a case of one hand not knowing what the other was doing."
"What do you mean? Two things acting against each other to the same goal?"

She smiles, "Exactly! The people who tried to kidnap her today put something known as a 'charm' on her. I found the ingredients in the shop. Their idea was to kidnap the young girl using that, but they weren't aware of one thing: The mind-control that was already on the same girl. So mixing the two together, got that."

"I know that already."
"Oh, good! Okay, so these two sides-"

"I'm really getting lost with all this." You rub your head, "Is it really this complicated? Can you just tell us who we need to go smash?"

"-I'm getting to that! Okay, so these two sides are from Gallete; the people you've been fighting. Then there's the Konditorei side. Even though they were fighting over Kayda, their goal is the same: to get rid of as many heroes as possible."
"'get rid of?'"
"Kidnap, incapacitate, just generally put them somewhere that makes them not a problem."

"Problem to who?"

She looks through her bag once more, and pulls out a rusty metal plate. It has some strange emblem on it.
"Yuuki, have you heard of the 'man from the mountains'?"

"..That weird guy that Jack met? The one that claimed to be an 'ancient hero'?"

"That might be him! See, every country wants him on their side. They think that anyone who can win his trust has won any kind of war or political battle from now until he dies. They don't think your group of heroes stand a chance against this guy, at all. "

>I bet I could take him
>It's just one guy, what's the big deal?
>I don't get where we fall into this.
>So.. is he the guy behind this?
>Does he even know this is happening?
>Where can we find him?

Folks, I hate to do this only four posts in, but I'm writing last post of the night. Sorry!

Maybe we could have a bonus thread on Saturday. What does everyone think of that?

"Pft." You mumble, "I bet we could take him.."

"In any case, it seems like the primary goal is to get this person on their side. So the idea is to maybe appease him?"
"Question." You stop her, "Does he even know this is happening?"

She blinks, "I don't know, never met the guy."

"I'm beginning to understand Jack's love of booze." You plant your face down onto the table. "If you never met the guy, how do you know this is his will?"

"The documents, Yuuki."
"Right, those things with the weird symbols I don't understand on them." You wave her off, "I'm not very impressed."

"Well, I expected this to go better." She puts the 'evidence' away in her pack. "I did hear that one and two disappeared from the ring network."
"Yeah, so?" You lean back.

"One, three, and four are the people who founded that network." The detective continues, "Two was the young girl, Kayda."

You blink, for some reason; you hadn't made that connection.

"The only reason I know that." She answers the confusion on your face, "Is because Number one, three, and four were constantly giving orders to number two, but never to each other."

She sits back, crossing her arms with pride. "I did some tracing and was able to find that One must be her summoner, and two must be the girl. No idea who three and four are."

"Mm." You nod, "Were you aware that Kayda had a ring implanted in her neck?"
Suzette's eyes widen, "There was a what in her neck?"

"A ring." You glare at her, "So, before you accuse Kayda of anything-"
"No! No! Nothing of the sort. It's just, Two is gone; so is One, three, and four. I don't know where three and four went, but I know where One went."

You stop and consider what she just said.
"You know where Greta went?!"
"Uhh." She backs up slightly, "I don't know who that is, but I sort-of know where Kayda's summoner went. It's not enough to launch a full investigation, but I could get some of the guards to help-"

"We leave tonight." You lurch forward and grab her by the shoulder, "And you're coming with me."
"W-wait, really, I may look tough, but I'm just an investigator, and-"

"No excuses. Where is she?"

Suzette seems nervous now, "A hideout, not too far from Gallete. I found out through a message earlier. She's staying until she gets messenger pigeons from somewhere in Konditorei."

"We leave right now, then." You stand up. "Let's go."

"Wait-"
"Yes?"
"Shouldn't you get some other heroes, first?!"

Oh, that's a good idea. Maybe you should also tell Anna that you'll be leaving for a while, just to be safe.

Thanks to everyone for the thread. I'm not entirely sure if I'm done with it or not. We'll see on Saturday if I have the time or continue.
I think I like the update twice a week schedule either ways. Sorry this didn't get a bit further. I'm still aching some.

In the meantime, watch my twitter! Thanks for participating and let me know what you thought of today's thread. Take care!
