It was raining again.

There was no thunder – no loud thunder – but it was definitely raining again, just as it had yesterday. This time, however, finishing your stirring from the sleeping back, you rise to see that you are not alone in your rising this early morn. Kaga stands, naked – what else would she be – tossing a towel over her shoulder. You open your mouth to call out to her, but before any sound leaves your throat, you find her head already turned towards you. Although, in the dim light you can’t tell what expression she has on her face, only that she’s looking right at you.

‘Good morning, Commander.’ She greets, chuckling darkly, no doubt remembering last night. ‘I’m surprised you have the energy to get up this morning.’

‘Who says I do?’

‘Apparently… your body.’ She snickers, turning away from you again. ‘I’m borrowing your supply.’

‘My what?’

She holds up two items in her hand; you can barely make either out in this bad light… but your eyes adjust well enough to see what she meant: in an interesting twist of things, she apparently has your shower gel and shampoo in her hands. You let out a small smile as you get out of your sleeping bag, stretching as much as you can. You’re still a little sore – mentally and emotionally – after last night… and apparently a stretch wasn’t enough to get either kink out of your system right away.

‘Run out?’ You manage, yawning right after.

‘Just last night.’

‘Be my guest.’ You give your permission, stripping yourself of your singlet and boxers. Now you were as much in the buff as she was. ‘Just remember to leave me a trickle, okay?’

‘You can just shower with me, though.’ She suggests. To your surprise, there’s a lack of the usual mischief in her voice; it’s more of a polite offer than anything else.

You snort, nodding as Kaga opens the door. Grabbing a towel off the nearby chair – along with your toothpaste and toothbrush – you wrap it around your waist and follow her into the corridor. Above, you frown as you make out that the lights immediately above your room’s exit needed a good changing. The bulbs flicker on and off, as they had last night… as far as you are in terms of luxury on a battlefront, you find you can't quite ignore it; perhaps you could fill in a requisition form?

Maybe it wouldn’t annoy the maintenance crew too much to drop a few boxes of lightbulbs so you could do it yourself.

‘You need to change these bulbs. They’re sore on the eyes.’

Kaga shakes you from your thoughts, looking upward and frowning.

‘Actually, that’s what I was just thinking about.’ You sigh, walking alongside her. ‘You think maintenance crew will think that we’re spoiled making so many requests? We already got the place cleaned up and a stove installed… not to mention power.’ You reason – now that you think about it, you were in relative luxury, really. ‘I mean, they stay in tents and camps; don’t you think we’re being a little unreasonable here?’

She looks a little surprised at your line of thought… before giggling into a closed fist and turning to you, slightly smiling.

‘Perhaps.’ She concedes, before looking up and frowning to the sight of the bulbs behind you. ‘Doesn’t stop it from being irritating, though.’ Her frown deepens as you notice her features flicker between dark and light – the bulb directly above you was now copying its brothers. ‘But seeing as you’re the man of the house…’ she leans a little close, your noses almost touching, ‘don’t you think that your concerns should be our comfort and health instead of whether the maintenance crew would be a little more… abrasive towards you?’

‘I don’t want to come off as spoiled.’ You answer quickly, biting your lip. ‘I mean, everyone’s busy and – !’ You frown, turning back to Kaga. ‘Man of the house?’

Kaga flashes an enigmatic smile.

‘You’re the only one with these.’ She gives the tip of your member a teasing flick, making it wobble slightly. You recoil at the touch, but don’t jump back as you probably would have before. She bares her teeth like a lioness, grinning so wide her eyes narrow. ‘Maybe you should think of living up to it?’

‘I don’t see how my penis factors into this.’ You give her a flat look, moving past her and towards the entrance. Kaga follows beside you – you try not to meet her eyes, knowing that she was trying to get a definite rise out of you.

From one end or the other.

‘I love you, Commander,’ she sighs, giving you a strong pat on the back, before smirking, ‘but there’s a line between abusing your power and asserting your authority.’ She kisses you on the cheek, moving ahead. ‘They’re not the same, you know.’

You open your mouth to say something in return, but are greeted by the sight of two of your KanMusu, naked as you were, in front of the sinks and mirrors, bent forwards and observing their reflections.

‘Morning, Commander.’ Murakumo salutes with a wink.

‘Sir.’ Nachi nods.

'Good morning.’ You give your shoulders a roll, moving behind Murakumo – even as a Commander, when you were late, you had to wait your turn. ‘Nachi. Murakumo.

‘I’m done if you need to use the sink.’ Murakumo immediately asks, giving her chest a good, wet rub down as she leaves the counter, tossing her towel over her shoulder and heading towards one of the toilet stalls. ‘Need to drop a shell.’

You make a face, disgusted by the information. Apparently not caring, Murakumo immediately closes the door behind her.

‘Thanks.’ You says thinly – not that she could hear you… not with those groans.

Looking to Kaga, you find your Carrier gesturing for you to take your place at the sink. However, the gentleman in you relents… and you copy the gesture, allowing her to take point. Kaga gives you another look, before letting out a small laugh and bow, taking Murakumo’s place. On the other side of the partition, you can hear two or three giggles over the sound of the shower rains to go with some animated conversation; whatever they were taking about.

‘You can share with me, ya know.’

Nachi shuffles closer to Kaga, motioning for you to take her place beside her. You do so, giving her a nod of thanks. Her reply is a smirk and a friendly pat on your – sizable but thankfully reduced – bottom, throwing what looked like a cupful of mouthwash into her gaping maw, gargling loudly enough that even Kaga stops in the middle of brushing her teeth to give Nachi an annoyed frown… not that she cared.

‘Hey, Nachi, how’ve things been?’ You give a mock-friendly pat on the back to accompany your sarcastically chummy tone – although, considering just who you had given a strong whack, it might as well have been an ant bite. Even if it was Kantai Steel. ‘Been staying out of trouble, I hope?’

Nachi immediately spits out the yellow liquid and foam, coughing. Maybe using your prosthetic wasn’t such a good idea.

‘Too busy to get into trouble.’ Nachi grumbles, scooting slightly to her right. At her tone, you think it might not be such good timing to start one of her jibes – you didn’t know if she was a morning person, but she hadn’t detached your arm from your socket, so you took that as a good sign. ‘I got space; don’t be shy.’

‘Thanks.’ You reach over, turning on the faucet and running your brush under. ‘Work been eating into you more than you’d like to give?’

‘You can say that.’ She grumbles again. ‘Damn, I hate this damn thing; always gives the inside of my cheek a bigger itch than the one I already got.’

‘That’s why I don’t use that brand.’ Kaga cuts in, tapping the bottle. ‘Good advertising, but I think it’s allergic to our species.’

On the other side of the partition, someone lets out a happy cry.

You take a mouthful of water and gargle before squeezing out a drop of toothpaste. Looking at Nachi, who’d begun checking for bags under her eyes, you decide to address the one thing that she’d mentioned; the one thing that apparently was of the utmost concern to the Heavy Cruiser.

‘What do you mean by an itch?’ You frown, putting the toothbrush in your mouth and beginning to brush. If it was something that Nachi had brought up with that much vitriol it must be something that she had taken particular issue with. ‘Anything I can help with?’

Surprisingly, she rounds on you, her lips turned into a scowl and a stare of annoyance drilling into both your eyes. You move to say something – an apology at the tip of your tongue, but suddenly, the energy goes out of her eyes and she turns back to the mirror, rubbing the back of her head. Her cheeks had gone slightly red, and her change in demeanor was such that even Kaga had stopped her own motions, curiously eying her fellow Division member. Finally apparently relenting, her mouth becomes a thin line… and give you a look that, rather than aggravates or makes you shrink, only raises your confusion.

‘It’s an itch.’ She sighs, drooping her shoulder, rubbing her pelvic area.

‘Yeah, what’s the problem?’ You frown before going back to brushing your teeth. ‘‘S no’ c’n doo ‘bou’ i’ ya do’ ‘ell me.

Don’t talk while brushing your teeth.’ Nachi and Kaga chime, glaring at you.

You frown – it was like having your mother on your back, the way they looked at you. You grab two handfuls of water, gargling and spitting out, wiping away the remnants on you before turning back to them, trying your best to not look the part of a scolded child.

There’s nothing I can do about it if you don’t tell me.’ You repeat.

‘I have an itch.’ Nachi says again. You frown even deeper – if she had to be so vague about it, maybe you should talk about it later… or at least, that’s what your brain thought.

Your mouth, however, had other ideas.

‘What’s the problem?’

She lets out a frustrated sound, grabbing your prosthetic by the wrist. Her next action, however, is so sudden and shocking, that you can’t maneuver yourself out of it – not that you could, strong as she was – or begin countermeasures. She takes your right hand, palm outwards, and facing you, slaps it against the lips of her labia. You find yourself a little… disoriented as she takes things further, moving your hand up and down her pelvic area – you can feel your middle finger dipping into her slit, all the while as she keeps glaring at you.

‘I have an itch!’ She bites out. ‘Like a real, physical, scratchy irritation: an itch!

‘Does this have anything to do with what happened the other day?’

You’d remembered giving Nachi a shave… although you don’t recall just what was it that you’d specifically used. Right now, there was what looked like a rash – well, not a rash, but a red mark all around her pelvic area where the hair used to be… and still was. A little of it, anyway. There looked to be small hairs – stubble, you feel, running your prosthetic over the surface of her skin – in the red area; you don’t feel much with your right, so you switch to your left. Immediately, you feel the pricks upon the tips of your fingers. You look back up to Nachi, whose cheeks were a flaming red and whose lips were pursed.

‘I don’t know.’ She looks away, mumbling something incoherent before turning back down to look at you. ‘If you wanna have a look, you’re welcome to. You were down there before, anyway.’

‘Oh, how very sly, the both of you…’

You immediately straighten, almost jumping from Kaga’s presence right next to you. She had a look of amusement on her face… with a tinge of disbelief to go with it, turning from you to Nachi and back, before looking down at Nachi’s pelvic area. Before you can say anything, Kaga closes her distance with Nachi. It takes all of your willpower to keep looking and stay your more primal urges – like blood flow and the heat between your own legs – to see their chests press against one another. You know you should be used to this sort of thing by now and there was no sexual component to the action… but honestly, as a male?

You just couldn’t.

Kaga places her hand on Nachi’s nethers – you can tell she’s doing some probing and pushing… and that her victim doesn’t really mind. In fact, you notice – despite the red face and the look of annoyance – that Nachi was actually spreading her stance a little wider to accommodate Kaga’s press against her, but not enough to get her to shove off. A few moments later, Kaga frowns, pulling away and putting her hands on her hips… giving Nachi a look of annoyance, and, if your own gut is to be believed, amusement.

‘How much of a neophyte do you have to be to not be able to shave your own pubic hair?’ She motions for you to move away, rinsing her hands. ‘Really?’

‘My sisters used to do it for me.’ Nachi huffs, crossing her arms. ‘I’m not one out for fashion or to – !’

‘You couldn’t get one of us then?’ Kaga scowls… at you. What had you done? ‘No wonder you’re all red down there. You’ve been using male aftershave and foam! That’s not for this!’

She really sounds like an angry Houshou now, pointing at her own groin.

‘Wait here. I’ll sort it out. I should have my kit in the room.’ She turns to you. ‘You. Don’t. Do. Anything.’

She stomps outside, grumbling.

You spare the irritated – in more ways than one – Nachi a glance as she leans her bare bottom against the counter, crossing her arms under her taut breasts, glaring at the wall opposite the both of you. You really hope that Kaga had something to scratch that itch… you don’t think you could risk getting under her skin anymore than you had. You’d barely known her 3 weeks and here you were, responsible for a –

‘Hey, look… I’m sorry for the…’ You trail off, rubbing the back of your neck. Your cheeks are aflame with embarrassment, not quite knowing how to apologize. It wasn’t as if you had stuck it in there in ignorance… she’d asked and you’d complied, but still…

Nachi sighs, playing with the tips of her hair.

‘No, it’s my fault.’ She concedes… much to your confusion.

‘Yours?’

‘Yeah.’ She answers in a defeated tone, absently giving her nipples a pinch. For what reason you can’t tell yourself; maybe she was itching there, too. ‘I should’ve expected this from someone who spent the better half of the time spent shaving my vagina poking a finger into me.’

‘Harsh, but…’ You turn to the wall, ‘I really do apologize, you know.’

Maybe if you started preparing and thinking five steps ahead; maybe if you started to pull out when you had gone in over your head, the habits wouldn’t have leaked into your now short-looking career as a KanMusu Commander. You think back to the incident with the Yakuza; how you had let Shigure go buck wild and effectively abandoned the mission course; not to mention leaving your Sub-Commander to the mercy of an Oni while you had tended to Nachi, who could have handed herself well enough without your assistance. You think that maybe if you didn’t prove to be such a lout at times things would have gone better… and maybe you wouldn’t end up in these sort of situations.

‘I know.’ You hear a chuckle to your left… and feel the strong palm hitting you in the back, almost making you fall over. ‘You don’t have to worry so much about it.’

‘About what?’

‘Screwing up, you know.’ Nachi grins widely. ‘Everyone screws up.’

‘I wasn’t thinking about screwing up.’ You really weren’t. You were –

‘You were thinking about the consequences of screwing up.’ Your eyes grow wide; she could be remarkably insightful when she wanted to be. Although, considering her background, you couldn’t discount her on that front. ‘Which is pretty much the same thing… or worse, depending on where you’re looking at it from.’

‘Is this going to be another of those pseudo-philosophical discussions?’

‘No, this is just some advice.’ She insists, raising a finger for emphasis. ‘Don’t try to fake it in front of the Submarine.’

‘And you must be speaking from experience, no doubt.’

You wince – that had sounded a lot more personal than you had intended it to be.

‘I’m not telling you to let it all loose,’ she shrugs it off, pointing a finger at you, ‘but they can smell blood a league away; show any weakness and they’ll latch on like it’s no one’s business.’

‘You’re telling me not to fake it but you’re also telling me to bare myself. I’m not sure what kind of message you’re trying to deliver here.’ You really don’t; it was hard to get what she was getting at.

‘The Submarine is here so she already thinks she knows what she expects of you… what you have to do is give her not what she wants, but what she expects.’ That sounded… reasonable, if a little cryptic. ‘She’s not going to look for good or bad behavior and tick it in a box – despite her place on the totem pole, she’s not going to be happy finding what she’s been told to find.’ Nachi pokes you in the chest. ‘This is as much a game to her as it is a job… your job isn’t to show how big a goody two shoes you are because she knows that because she’s here, that little assumption is thrown out the window.’

‘What’s wrong with me showing just how exceptional an Officer I am?’ That had been what Takao and Nagato had pushed for. You didn’t see any flaws in it. ‘I thought that’s what military inspectors practically did.’

‘She’s not a military inspector. She’s a Submarine; a KanMusu hunter and a seeker for dissenters within the ranks of The Admiralty.’ Nachi growls, practically glowering at you. ‘If you want to heed my advice on this, here’s what I got out for you – don’t be a rigid booker. She’ll see straight through it and it’ll only make her want to dig in deep. She’s not a hound, but you’re not going to throw her off the scent playing that card. She’s been called here – she won’t be fooled.’

‘So if you’re saying play the goody-two-shoes is out, what do I do?’

She looks thoughtful for a while… before letting out a groan.

‘Nachi?’

‘I hate to say this, but…’ She mumbles something under her breath.

‘Sorry, I didn’t catch that.’

Be The Vice-Admiral.

You make a face.

‘Nachi, you hate The Vice-Admiral.’ You throw it out bluntly. It was already out there.

‘I hate his guts, but he’s the sort of person that The Submarine’s going to expect you to be.’ Nachi scowls again. ‘I’m not saying that you have to be him, be him but if you take your cues from him, The Submarine’s going to think that you’re one of those… gung-ho can-do types; you know, the ones that The Admiralty advertises for? Those hero idiots?’

‘I am a gung-ho can-do type.’

She gives you a quick chop on the noggin, unamused.

‘Ouch!’

‘Look, I’m trying to offer you advice for free here, Commander; the least you can do is listen.’

‘I apologize.’ You grumble, rubbing your scalp. ‘What do you need me to do?’

TBC
>>
‘I don’t need you to do anything – but I have been involved with The SS enough that I know just what is it they’re going to be looking for… and if you play the clean Officer, you’re going to risk exposing a lot more than what they think they’re here for.’ She says warningly.

‘All right, all right.’ You raise your hands, trying to take it all in. ‘So I act like myself with a few touches from The Vice-Admiral, but not so much that I blow my cover.’ ‘Don’t try to play the good boy so much, but don’t outwardly antagonize The Submarine. So do I – ?’

‘You don’t have to treat her like she’s one of the Division.’ She emphasizes. ‘I think what she’s going to expect is that you’re not quite all right with her being here… at all.’ Nachi smirks, raising a finger again. ‘So you can play with that; ask when she asks, don’t retort. Try to steer her away from the obvious but lead her on with subtlety; like it or not, you’re going to have to play the game with her… think about it as a chess board where the pieces are in multi-color and the board is flipped.’

‘No pressure.’ You grumble.

‘That, and I’m not sure if you know this, but showing affection to Houshou or Kaga isn’t going to get you thrown under the bus.’ She says informatively. ‘The Submarines are brutal on regs, so you’re not going to be able to let that fly with me… if it ever crosses your mind… but they’re a lot more lenient with displays of affection involving Carriers.’ Something hits Nachi. She turns to you. ‘Have you sorted out Iowa yet?’

‘No, but – !’

‘I’ll talk to her.’ Nachi brings a hand under her chin, frowning. ‘Nagato knows what to do and so does Takao… but if she’s a blabbermouth, I – ?’

‘I’m right here, you know.’

The both of you turn around to see Iowa, clad in a towel and her hair fluffed up like some sort of sunflower, giving the both of you an annoyed gaze. You pinch the bridge of nose – she had some really bad timing.

‘Commander.’ She suddenly says, ‘I’m sorry about last night.’

‘Um, er… no problem.’ You push yourself off the counter. ‘I’m built to last. Oh, you’re not… screaming your head off.’

‘I’m trying not to.’ She grimaces, cheeks aflame. ‘Just don’t tell me to look down, please?’

You laugh, wrapping your towel around your waist. You could afford her that courtesy, at least; a hard pat finds its way onto your shoulder, and you look to see Nachi… smirking.

‘Nachi, what’s up?’

‘I just had a brilliant idea.’ She says breathlessly, practically skipping towards Iowa.

>‘This I have to hear.’ (Hear her out)
If anyone would have sound advice about this kind of thing, it'd be Nachi.
>>
‘Despite my misgivings, I have to hear this.’

‘It’s easy.’ Nachi extends her index finger and thumb, pointing it right at Iowa. ‘Iowa, slap him.’

‘Hey, hang on – !’ Your misgivings were not misplaced, as it would appear.

SLAP!

Ow.’

It’s not hard – for a Battleship, Iowa had remarkable control over her strength. Still… boy did it sting. If it had been anyone else, you’d have tossed an uppercut their way – anyone out of your Division, anyway, but considering that it was Iowa… you have doubts on the effectiveness. Besides, in the aftermath of last night’s debacle, you felt that you owed her something in return, especially after she’d been kind enough to swallow her pride and apologize – now if you could get the same thing from Nagato, things would be green.

The apology. Not the slap. She’d used up her quota for the month – you were still drained after all that.

Still, you think that she enjoyed that a little too much… even with that sorry look that came after.

‘What was the point of that?’ You raise yourself to give a look at Nachi. However, you find yourself a little shocked to find that, rather than the smug expression you’d expected to have taken firm root on her features, her lips were pursed and her brow was creased, looking very much the part of a calculative strategist. ‘Nachi?’

‘It’s natural enough… but you might want to go for a stagger.’

‘What’s this about?’ Iowa frowns, confused.

‘Our Commander here’s under review.’

‘I’m not surprised.’ Iowa adopts Nachi’s smug smirk, turning to you. ‘Sexual harassment? Improper conduct? Treason?

You open your mouth to defend yourself, but Nachi – surprisingly – was already there.

‘For keeping one of our own alive over some petty dick measurin’ squabble.’ Nachi answers seriously, rubbing the back of her head. ‘Look, I know you don’t feel like you owe the fat guy here anything, especially after what he’s pulled the last few days… but you’re perfect for this part. You’re an outsider… and a more reliable gauge for The SS.’

‘Why can’t Takao or Nagato – ?’

‘Because they’re part of The Division.’ Nachi rationalizes, raising a finger between your eyes. ‘The only KanMusu that you have can overrule in regards to fraternization regulations are Carriers; you’ll be putting them in a lot more trouble than you’d

Coulda fooled me.’ Iowa grumbles, looking away. ‘Fine; I’ll play… but you’ll owe me for this.’

‘Did you pull this plot out of a TV show or something?’ You cross your arms, confused. ‘It sounds… very complicated.’

Nachi turns red for a brief moment – was that annoyance or embarrassment that you saw etched for that second?

‘It’s all about reading people, you know. You can’t give people what they want straight away or they’ll get suspicious; you can’t give them what they want at the end either because they’ll be disappointed.’ She says knowledgeably. There is some sense in there. ‘What you really need to do is make the way hard enough for them to think that there’s a pot at the end of the rainbow, only that it’s not what they expect or want, but something close to it – if you match it point for point, it just doesn’t work.’

‘The Narrative Fallacy.’ Iowa giggles – the first time you’d seen her do so, leaning against the counter of the sink. ‘Do not give me what I want. Give me what you think I need.

‘You read Toppa?’ Nachi blinks, surprised.

What the Hell was Toppa?

‘I’m not a fan, if that’s what you’re trying to imply,’ Your roll your eyes – you’d heard that snooty tone before. It looked like even Iowa wasn’t immune to taking the high ground when it came to elitist stances, ‘but he’s smart enough for those quiet nights. My father had a collection – sometime when the television was out, I’d just leaf through.’

‘Fath – oh, you mean your last Admiral.’ Nachi nods thoughtfully, looking very serious. ‘Well, Toppa’s great, but… he’s not exactly readable for people that just want to have something by the night light.’

‘Everyone’s got their own taste.’ Iowa grimaces. Maybe you were wrong. ‘Still, this does sound rather familiar to a plot from an old book one of the maintenance crew members used to carry around…. Consuela’s Confession.’ She winks at Nachi. ‘You wouldn’t know anything about that, would you?’

‘N – N – No, I wouldn’t.’

‘What’re the two of you going on about?’

You’d had enough of being lostby now.

‘Nothing, just,’ Iowa sighs, before giggling again, ‘this plan, it’s kinda the same if I draw it against the one in that book. Rodrigo, a dashing Ship Captain, is in love with a woman named Consuela, a nun in a religious monastery. Rodrigo’s ship crashes on the rocks and Consuela nurses him back to health, but has to put on this farce that she hates him because he’s this… hot-bodded Captain and she’s a Nun. There’s this Monk who suspects something going on between the both of them, and Rodrigo flirts with the other Nuns at the monastery in front of him – except for Consuela to throw him off.’

Iowa hums in content.

‘It’s trashy.’ She hugs herself, giggling. ‘Trashy and beautiful!’

‘I wouldn’t know a thing about that.’ Nachi insists. ‘Not at all.’

‘Actually… that sounds good, really.’ You concede. You don’t know much about psychological warfare and throwing the hounds off your scent… and Nachi seemed like she had a larger span of experience in the matter than you did. ‘Classic case of misdirect and reading – I don’t see anything going wrong with that.’

Somewhere in the recesses of your mind, something stirs and hits its head against the walls of your skull, decrying just how nonsensical the whole farce was. You don’t pay any attention to it, however – Nachi may not have liked you much, but where it counted, you could put your trust in her. Your only worry in the whole matter was your fortitude… and Iowa. You didn’t know your guest that well, nor why she had been so agreeable in helping you – practically a complete stranger – in this mischief. Still, it did seem like a good way to keep the Submarine from prying too deep into matters.

‘Going wrong with what?’

You turn around to see Murakumo, right of the toilet, towel on her head. She’d exited the stall a little fresher.

‘On second thought, I don’t wanna know.’ She waves away your attempt at an answer, moving past you and headed towards the showers. ‘Whatever you folks are up to, leave me out of it. I’m grabbing a shower.’ You open your mouth to say something. ‘Not listening. Whatever you do, you do, sir.’

She gives you one last glare, moving past the partition.

As she moves away, you see Kaga coming back in, holding what seemed to be a whole toolbox. Your eyes practically pop at just what Kaga, naked and a towel around her neck, was lugging around – it looked like an orange briefcase, only made of metal. You’d seen it before in your room… before, you’d thought that it was just something that the maintenance crew had left for your specific use – that it had been some kind of emergency kit or something.

You would have never suspected it to be

‘I’ll take my leave, Commander,’ Iowa’s voice gets your attention, before she lets out a half-playful, half-outraged sound, sending her hand flying right after. ‘Scoundrel!

SLAP!

It stings… but not as much as you thought it would.

Practice.’ She leans to your ear after, chuckling darkly.

Iowa skips past Kaga, entirely taking her role in the farce with a little too much enthusiasm for your liking.

‘What was that about?’ Kaga frowns, slamming the heavy case onto the counter, flipping it open.

‘I’ll tell you later.’ You stretch, motioning to head past the partition yourself. ‘I’m gonna have a – !’

‘You’re staying there.’ Kaga says calmly. ‘And you are going to learn how to shave a woman’s pubic hair properly. Or I’ll pull yours out one by one…’ She pulls out a pair of tweezers, ‘with these.’

You don’t protest.

‘Good morning, Commander.’

As you reach down the stairs you see LEIA and your two attendants, ready to greet you. You’re impressed by LEIA – you hadn’t even seen her hit the showers; she must have taken an early start to get ready so quickly.

‘Good morning, Gentlemen. LEIA.’

The Lanky Attendant raises a plastic bag, grinning.

‘We have breakfast for you, sir, if you’re interested.’

‘Thank you.’ You say sincerely, accepting one of the plastic bags. ‘What’s on the menu today?’

‘Gruel and bread,’ your Bulky Attendant shrugs, before adding, ‘and banana burritos.’

‘I’ll trade you half my portion for your burrito.’

‘Deal.’

All of your move into the common room to begin the delegation of tasks… outside, you see that it was still raining, only much lighter and with a distinct lack of thunder. Setting yourself behind your desk, you open the wrapping of your meal, taking a savory bite.

‘Sir, before we start, I’d like to give you this… considering you finally have someone in your district doing business.’

With one gulp, you swallow your first bite.

District Duties?’ You frown, flipping the form. You recognize the emblem of the Lord… and a symbol that you definitely know was the ramen stall’s own logo. ‘What’s this about?’

‘Well, sir, you’re going to have to sort out the running security and deals regarding the buildings.’ Your Bulky Attendant begins helpfully. ‘Even though they’re abandoned, there’s still a legal component to signing over their responsibilities to The Admiralty. Seeing as that part of the town’s yours… you’re going to have to help sign them off for now.’ He grins a little as he goes on. ‘Plus, considering that you’re, you know, making money off the shops there…’

‘I get it.’ You raise a hand. More work. Just what you needed.

‘Oh, and before I forget, sir, you have a meeting with an Army Major and The Head of MP Operations this afternoon about lunch time.’ You wince – you’d forgotten about that. ‘They’ll be coming over, so there’s no need for any meeting point. Then, in the late evening, someone from the Admiralty will be coming around to perform an inspection on you for the next few days.’

‘The Submarine.’ You sigh.

‘I think so, yeah.’ Your Bulky Attendant ‘They’ll be arriving pretty early, but before meeting up with you, they’re going to be hanging around HQ for a bit. You know, registration, meeting The Admiral and The Vice-Admiral and all that jazz.’ ‘Don’t have a fixed time on them coming here, but I suggest that you don’t wander around like you usually do after hours if they do decide to come late.’

‘Can’t I just leave a note on the door or something?’

All three of them give you incredulous looks.

‘Well, sir, that’d be rude.’

No one ever thinks I leave that option while I leave the other options on hold because, as Military Commanders, you know, I'd like you folks to actually remember the details from your last paperwork stack instead of asking what you would be behind on. The option is there not for you to abuse, but for you guys - the ones who actually forget - to work on, not for the ones who are lazy enough to not click the archive on the last thread and remember just what you'd done.

I leave that option in in case you guys actually forget, but the more you abuse it the more your attendants are going to think you're an absent-minded professor who can't remember what he had for breakfast.

‘Are we behind on anything?’

Both your attendants share a troubled look, before your Bulky Attendant takes one of the many bags from his friend, diving into it and taking out several files. It would seem that you weren’t the only one who hadn’t bothered to remember his own workload for the day – still, you were appreciative that they’d take the time to remember it in lieu of you remembering it yourself.

‘Uh, hang on, let me check.’ He holds up a hand, taking out a thin-looking file and opening it up. Slightly frowning upon looking at the sheet of paper, he leans towards his friend, frowning heavily as he gestures him to have a look at the piece of paper. ‘Hey, this is a little… did you write that, man?’

‘No, you did. See? Under advisement; that was your part. Not mine.’ Your Lanky Attendant taps on the file, frowning. ‘You did the scheduling here and here and I filled out the details at the end, but it’s your stamp.’

‘Oh, yeah,’ your Bulky Attendant shuffles towards you, setting the file on your desk.

You turn the file towards you, frowning. The handwriting wasn’t horrible – but the fact that there were two distinct styles of writing; one blocky and the other in elegant – too elegant – cursive makes you want to nurse the growing headache.

‘Huh, you’re in luck, sir, we’re not particularly behind on anything.’ He stops himself, turning the file towards himself… and flushing slightly red before turning it back towards you again. ‘Oh wait, here we are – we’re behind on Base Duties… but we’re all right in regards to District Duties… for a bit, anyway, but we’re actually on stack when it comes to Division Duties and Supplementary Duties.’

The piece of paper is picked up and brought to your nose, running your prosthetic’s thumb along the side, you sigh. Maybe you could afford to remember this a little better yourself.

‘Thanks.’

‘Getting a little old, Commander?’ LEIA chimes. You set down the file and give her an unamused look.

‘Memory’s not what it used to be?’ Your Lanky Attendant adds, grinning widely. Maybe you could afford a little more discipline to go around.

‘I’m in my twenties.’ You straighten your collar, a little indignant. ‘Don’t talk to me like I’m going senile, soldier.’

‘Yes sir.’ They both salute – to your surprise, LEIA gets it right this time.

You let out a sigh… what to start with, you wonder.

‘Let’s start with the Base Duties.’ You decide, stretching upwards. ‘I think I’m a little behind on my red tape dodging practice.’

Production schedules were the last thing you’d expected upon taking the task, however.

Due to the nature – and lack of authority – of your post, you’d prioritized the amalgamation of units to synergise your workload, but the fact that you had to sign off on individual parts of the charter – the one involving logistics and departmental cohesion – didn’t feel as easy as it should have been. You weren’t able to mix and match as you’d like this time, though, and with some of the load on your hands you feel a little bit more annoyed than usual seeking approval on some of the issues. You thank whatever stars that were aligned for LEIA being on your hands – as did your two attendants – the fact that she was a capable sorter of files and dates, better than any of you three was a huge boon.

‘Commander, these are under your jurisdiction, right?’ She hands you over the next set of papers. You chew off the last of your banana burrito, lifting the documents to your nose. ‘They say something about a Vice-Admiral, but they want you to co-sign it.’

So this is what The Vice-Admiral had been up to on his off days: getting people to perform triple duty on logistics and training sorties and having you sign off your allotted times. It’s not as if you were using it, anyway… but the next piece of paper did catch your interest – a training schedule for your Destroyers and Light Cruisers on defensive formations with The Vice-Admiral’s own forces. You sign off on it anyway – under advisement – and hand it back to LEIA, thanking her. That was indeed under your jurisdiction – after all, it was your time. Setting down the pen and dipping your bread into your bowl of gruel, you take the next folder – the overlap of your Division’s general duties and your own assignment.

‘Why isn’t this under Division?’ You frown, raising the file up for everyone to see.

‘Priority.’ Your Lanky Attendant answers without looking up, scribbling into his own workload. ‘Division duties don’t take precedence over Base duties because they were there first – and operations are generally handled by The Admiral anyway. You can’t sign off on those yourself, so they fall under Base.’

You nod, beginning to go through the stack with aplomb. At least you knew where you came in.

By the time you’re done, it was well past noon… and into lunch time. Not that you were hungry, of course – breakfast was a little heavy for you, wonder of wonders, and you could still feel the churning.

‘Commander,’ you look up to see LEIA standing before you, looking rather unsure, ‘there’re two gentlemen at the door. Do I let them in?’

‘Two gentlemen?’ You frown.

‘I’m sorry, LEIA, I must have spaced out for a bit.’ You stretch yourself, cricking your neck. ‘Let them in.’

You see two familiar faces – The MP Chief and The Army Major, clad in their usual uniform – soon after, led in by LEIA. The Major looks the same stoic character than you had seen before, his lips thinned into a line. He probably had heard about the news; you’re not sure about The MP Chief, though – he looked a little distracted by LEIA, who in turn was turned off enough that she had failed to ask permission from you before heading upstairs. Your attendants set seats for the two men, gesturing them to sit down.

‘Afternoon to ya, Commander.’ The MP Chief gives a casual salute.

Division Commander.’ The Major bows slightly.

‘Major. Admiral.’ You give a light bow, gesturing at them to take their seats as your attendants had.

‘Like ‘em young, huh?’ He turns his head to the empty hallway, chuckling audibly. ‘I don’t judge. You got quite the selection of the ladies here.’

Your Bulky Attendant shifts uncomfortably, taking his place on the couch alongside his friend. You wouldn’t have minded a quick knock to the senses for The MP Chief by his hand, truthfully. You wouldn’t have taken that kind of comment about your lady standing down… although that might just be the over-protectiveness in you.

‘We were told to come here to finalize the issue of the jurisdiction and the scheduling synchronization with the MP Patrols.’ The Major, as you expect, gets right down to it, his eyes looking hopeful. ‘Commander, were you able to get it?’

So he hadn’t heard it. Maybe that was just his default expression. The MP Chief, however, looks instantly annoyed.

‘Whoa, whoa, whoa,’ He practically snarls at you, ‘you consulted the schedules of my men without me? Man, that’s low.’

‘I didn’t consult anything.’ You raise a hand, gesturing at them to stay in their seats. ‘Both of you, please calm down.’ You turn to The Major, folding your hands as you try to repeat what The Admiral had told you. ‘Major, you requested this issue from me – I’m not able to fully comply with the terms that you’ve set. Before you argue with me, I already consulted The Admiral on the matter. Because of the nature of our departments, as much as they clash, we cannot give you full access to the MP timetable without setting a new precedent on inter-service cooperation in regards to civilian matters.’

‘That’s irrelevant to the matter.’ The Major frowns, unimpressed with the reasoning. ‘We’re not trying to move in on your jurisdiction – we were sent here by the Lords and High Command to help in relief efforts – you can’t be serious when you’re saying that you’re refusing to give us even the least bit of an olive branch?’

You shake your head. That hadn’t been it at all… even if it did feel like it.

‘Far from it. I actually do know that you’re trying your best to help the people – and the Admiralty – in restoring Yokosuka, and we won’t stand in your way when it comes down to it; but we won’t be handing you all the keys to the car… at least not without someone sitting right next to you.’ You gesture to The MP Chief. ‘MP Chief, the Admiral’s – !’

He rises from his seat, glowering at you. You sigh, counting back from ten.

‘You kidding me?’ He pats himself on the chest, looking straight at you. ‘This’ll strain my workload as is – my men are already keeping themselves on the edge with the lack of supplies and logistics and you expect me to stretch them out even more? This is more than slave-driving! You’re treating us like we’re toys running on batteries or something!’

‘I understand your concerns, and I was actually on The Major’s side when it came to the sharing of information.’

He doesn’t look the least bit impressed with that excuse, either.

‘That’s it, huh?’ He snorts wryly. ‘You and The Admiral have a talk and your two decisions come down to putting more paper on my stack or stretching my men further than they already are? Some considerate force you folks are.’

‘MP Chief…’

‘You didn’t even bother to ask me about it! How do you think I feel about this?’

‘Are you telling me that you have full executive decision in regards to the safety and well-being of the Yokosuka populace.’

‘Some populace.’ He rolls his eyes, scrunching his nose. ‘And I don’t, but I sure as Hell know ‘em a lot better and treat ‘em a lot more. You think that we’re some sort of beck ’n call unit or something? We’re working to the bone as much you’re busting your ass! You may not think that we’re nothing more than a bunch of hired muscle, but the way things’re going – !’

‘MP Chief, if you would be able to assist me in this either way, I wouldn’t protest.’ The Major – refreshingly reasonable – chimes in.

‘Can it, will ya?’ The MP Chief raises a finger to him. ‘As if I didn’t have enough problems without being assigned to babysit a bunch ’a thugs carrying guns. Synchronization – what kinda excuse is that?’

You get to your feet, having had enough of this.

‘The Admiral – and by extension, I – can’t afford to look at it that way. We’re all in this together, even if we work ourselves to the bone, it’s going to be for each other.’

The MP Chief opens his mouth to say something, but closes it instead.

‘The lack of a true departmental liaison means that full disclosure was a non-entity.’ You point out. You’re surprised you can even remember the rules. ‘Even if we wanted to pursue a course of action that would have meant less work any of us, it’d be setting a whole new precedent – especially because the Army is directly under the government and – even if it’s just in name right now – the League of Nations has a hold on the Admiralty.’

‘And how do you figure that out?’ The Chief scowls at you.

‘We’ve never had dealing the Army on this level of closeness before nor have we had any on this specific action.’ You sigh. There really wasn’t a joint operation of this sort before. ‘From what I know about the Admiralty, the Army’s only ever been there for evacuation operations in cities where the Admiralty and the KanMusu are expected to defend. What we’re doing right now is to keep things as they are without violating any protocols on either side of the argument. There has almost always never been a tandem operation outside of construction handovers – and even then, those have a set expiration date.’

‘What would keep us from actually establishing a new precedent, then?’ The Major cuts in, looking confused. ‘You don’t look like the sort of person that enjoys the red tape… as much as you dish it out.’

‘Don’t let his looks fool ya.’

You don’t rise to The Chief’s baiting. You had to keep a clear, reasonable head through all this.

‘No one wants to lose what little grasp of control that they have left.’ You try to appeal to their sensitivities. ‘I have no doubt in my mind, Major, that you wouldn’t be happy either if it went the other way around.’ The Major looks to his knees at that statement. ‘Still, we have to remember that we’re working through this together in order to keep the general public safe and secure… as much as we’re able to.’

‘Then why would you disagree on a joint force?’ He mutters, barely audible.

‘Like I said… we don’t have a go-between – and I doubt you’d bring the Navy – or, Hell, a Chancellor to oversee proceedings this tiny.’ You really don’t think the Lord would enjoy being bothered over schedule synergy. ‘We can only afford to give what we can… and in this case, it’s a reach of cooperation.’

The both of them look hesitant… before rising from their seats. The MP Chief does so first, and The Major follows a little after.

‘If you say so… then I have no choice but to accept those terms.’ The Major manages, placing a card on the table.

YOU RECEIVED: PERMISSION TAGS – LEVEL 1

‘That’s a Level 1 Tag… if you want to drop by Field Command… flash that and you can move past the first checkpoint, but no further.’

‘I’ll do that, thanks.’

You sigh as they leave. Back to work.

Just to clarify - if you had pushed for the Major's proposal with The Admiral, you would have been given Level 3 passes straight away, and access to more Tasks. Now you have to make your way up slowly.

On the plus side, the Chief isn't as angry with you as he would've been if you'd just given permission just like that. Now you have to work your way up to raise your rep with the Army boys.

To summarize:

You watch the retreating backs of the two men, glad to see them leave. As much as you reveled in the job, dealing with tempers wasn’t something that you were particularly keen in undertaking, especially with people who were around your age and were meant to be mature about things. Still, you could see where The Chief was looking at it from – you were surprised he hadn’t thrown a literal book at you, after all the trouble that you’d put on his Division.

‘Attendant.’ You bring your Bulky Attendant to attention, showing him your hand. ‘Pass those documents, won’t you?’

‘Yes, sir.’ He does so, before frowning. ‘Not having lunch, sir?’

‘I have a lot more to do today…’ You sigh, fiddling with the thumbs on your clothes. That was an understatement. ‘And I’m not that hungry; you folks can go and have your break first. I want to get a head start on this.’

‘Sir.’

The both of them are gone soon after, leaving you with several folders – LEIA goes with them, rushing down the stairs and giving you a salute and a casual wink before disappearing outside the door. Lifting the folder, you read through the latest in details… it would seem that the fairies had been assisting the reconstruction of the commercial district at a higher capacity than you’d previously thought. Going top to bottom on the first page, several of the specialists assigned had written off several proposals – replaced with a better-synergised form of alchemy to bring the district up to snuff. You let out a small laugh as you realize that the supplies the Army had brought in on their first day had been the best batch provided for them to work their magic.

It was a bit funny – to you, at least – to know that quality of synthesis components correlated with the success of alchemical incantations on the side of the fairies. It seemed like a quality control warning more than anything else.

About an hour and a half after you’d begun your work your three attendants return.

‘I need one of you to run back out and go to The Base.’ You hold up a document, sighing. ‘Tell them that the Army’s been giving more than adequate a supply – and ask them if it would be possible to requisition a supply stock. Take as long as you need to be – the reconstruction unit needs to be informed before the end of today.’

‘Yes, sir!’ Your Lanky Attendant takes it, jetting right out of the door as quickly as he’d arrived.

The toil that comes after lasts a few more hours – by the time the clock hits 1630, you set down your pen, almost in triumph.

‘Done and done, sir!’ Your Lanky Attendant barges in right after. His mission was an apparent success.

‘So what’re you going to do this evening, sir?’ LEIA inquires.

So the answer is:

It’s takes a lot less time to clean up today’s mess compared to yesterday. Maybe it was the feeling of accomplishment that accompanied a job well done… or the fact that your engine had just been running so well that you weren’t able to turn it off just yet. Still, it was a lot of excess energy, and even by the time your attendants had their bags packed and their folders tucked under their arms… there was still quite a bit of it left.

‘We’ll catch you later, sir.’ Your Lanky Attendant rolls up the last of the blueprints, tucking it into his sling bag. ‘Good luck with the inspection.’

You sigh – that’s right; the Submarine had yet to arrive. Your attendants had said that she was already on site and was at the base, but seeing as how late it was, you didn’t feel like it would be the best decision to make your way there; especially with how horrible your timing had turned out to be with other arrivals before… you couldn’t afford to make a mistake – if she would be here, here was where you would be until she arrived.

‘Take care of yourselves.’ You return the sentiment, before noticing LEIA between the both of them. ‘LEIA? You too?’

She immediately looks apprehensive, clumsily saluting and shaking in place.

‘I thought of joining them for dinner… unless you need me around, sir!’

‘Don’t worry.’ You wave her off, gesturing for to follow through with her plans. It was far from you to deny your subordinates a little time to themselves – and their friends – after a hard day’s work. ‘Go ahead.’

The three of them bow in thanks and LEIA hooks her arms around both of theirs, animatedly chatting with her boyfriend as they made their way to the door and out into the evening light, leaving you alone. Letting out a relieved sigh, you immediately unbutton the top of your collar. Sometimes you wonder if you could get away doing your paperwork in boxers, briefs or a singlet… but as a Commander, you didn’t want to set a bad example for your two attendants, especially seeing how wide-eyed they were at the notion of being put under the Admiralty’s banner/ You could be socially lenient… but a dress code violation? That’d look bad.

Looking around, you see that the evening sun serenely peers through the windows – there is a melancholic atmosphere that sets onto the place, a certain silence that you find peaceful and, truth be told, a little frightening.

‘Man, this place can be quiet when it wants to be.’

As you get to your feet, you hear the rush of footsteps, apparently coming down the stairs.

You look up to see their owner walking through the common area’s entryway.

‘Oh.’ You widen your eyes in surprise as you come face-to-face with one of your Barracks’ lodgers. ‘Didn’t expect you to be here.’

‘Samidare? What’s going on?’

‘Commander!’ Samidare marches right up to you, putting her hands on your desk and looking very much distressed.‘Shigure said I couldn’t hit on a bank if my life depended on it!’

‘Shigure? What does she have to do with – ?’

‘I did not.’ Shigure arrives, almost startling you. Her face is as blank as it always was. ‘I merely pointed out that you can’t hit on a bank if your life depended on it as you were you wouldn’t be able to hit on a bank – that kind of needs practice.’

Samidare turns to her, scowling.

‘As if you can talk!’ She cries out. ‘You do all those fancy flips and spins and think that you’re all that! Isn’t that right, Commander?’

‘Samidare, hang on,’ You rub your temples. ‘Shigure… what’s this about?’

‘She wanted my advice on how to do maneuvers.’ Shigure crosses her arms. ‘I gave them.’

‘She said I’m not good enough!’ Samidare accuses. ‘She said that I should focus on being fire support over playing point because – !’

‘Because you have no experience in it!’ Shigure practically snarls. ‘Do you know what it means to play point? You have to work really hard because no one’s going to be there to back you up most of the time. Holding action! Pulling the enemy away! Engaging solo! If you don’t know much of the basics,’ she says through gritted teeth, ‘I can’t teach you the advanced parts!’

‘I didn’t ask you to teach me the basics! I asked you to teach me how to chain my offensives.’

‘You fire a round and move right as your go-to maneuver,’ Shigure turns away snootily, ‘you can’t do it as you are, Samidare; you’re going to get yourself kill – !’

‘Y – You – !’ Samidare looks furious. ‘I try just as hard as you and – and the rest of you do!’

‘I know you do!’ Shigure fires back, scowling as she met her sister’s gaze. ‘That’s why I’m trying to teach you. The way you are, thinking that it’s cool to save the hero… that’s what’ll get you killed, right? You’re not cut out of this – there are some things we’re good at and some things we’re not; for me to acknowledge you as an engagement-first type; do you think I’m so blind to see your limits?’

‘I know my limits!’ Samidare hops in place, raising her voice. ‘That’s why I came to you!’

‘You don’t know a thing about your limits.’ Shigure takes a superior tone. You’re surprised that she even had one. ‘You think that you can do things that you’re not cut out for; don’t be so naive to think you can do it all as well as anyone else can. It only shows how much you don’t know.’

Samidare turns red, tears in the corners of her eyes.

To me it feels like Shigure wants stop Samidare's eagerness to do dangerous things while Samidare probably wants to do them to be more like Shigure.
Sami clearly doesn't like being treated as a rookie, but it feels like Shigure is speaking from past experience on why she needs to practice more before doing more advanced/dangerous things.
My decision still stand on needing to calm this down since Sami needs to understand we dont want her to die from foolish and pointless heroics, and Shigure needs to be more kind when helping her sister understand some things.

Nothing like laughter to get both to calm down.

Samidare wants to be like her nee-san while shigure doesnt want her to get hurt. We'll need to tell that to samidare a little slower ans nicer for her to understand. Working from the basics means that she can step up to her sister's level eventually.

‘Hang on. I want the both of you,’ you point at Shigure, then to Samidare, ‘to take it from the top.’

‘What?’ They both let out familiar, confused sounds – not to mention faces. It was remarkable just how you hadn’t realized their relations until recently.

Huh, they really are sisters.

‘I mean, I want the both of you to explain to me just what’s going on.’ You try to simplify it the best you can. ‘For starters… just why are the both of you upstairs when you should be on du – ?’

You remember signing off on a task change for the both of them.

‘You know what? Never mind.’ You groan, leaning back into your chair, gesturing for Samidare to start first. ‘Samidare, why are you asking Shigure for help? Is it because I haven’t gone around to organizing practice sessions?’

‘I want to be able to be a Point Man on missions!’ You fight down another groan as the words leave her mouth. Samidare practically glares – not that it did much to intimidate you. ‘I’m sick of playing Support or Scout and not being allowed to engage without initiating combat first – I’m just as capable as she is, you know!’

‘Samidare… haven’t we had this conversation before?’ You pinch the bridge of your nose. You didn’t feel like having it again.

‘I – I know that!’ She straightens. At her side, Shigure snickers behind a smirk. ‘But it’s useless if I don’t look to get myself better and just wait for you to give me a chance! I know I need to earn it, so – so I wanted to ask her for help! I’m from the same Class as she is!

‘Samidare, no one’s ever accused you of giving less than what you’ve been asked of.’

‘That’s it, though! None of you ever think of asking more than what you think I can do!’ Samidare accuses aggressively. The tone was so unlike her. ‘I – I’m sorry, Commander…’

‘That’s the kind of thinking that’ll get you killed.’ Shigure snarls – surprising you even more than Samidare’s tone had. ‘Don’t you think you’re enough of a burden being there on the battlefield? You’re a Destroyer, not a Cruiser or a Battleship.’ Samidare turns to her sister at this, looking as though she wanted to sock her one. ‘If you really want to be of use to an Operation, doing as you’re told will be more of a contribution to – !’

‘Why do you have to say that about me?!’ She throws up an accusing finger, even more tearful than she was before. ‘You’re a Destroyer, too, and I can carry just as many guns as you can! All I wanted was – was for my Nee-san to give me tips and all you do is call me names and say just how useless I am!’

Shigure falters a little, clicking her tongue and looking away, a hurt expression on her face.

Despite yourself, you really can’t help but feel a little amused at the situation. Shigure may have been prone to playing the lone wolf on the edge as part of her routine – with a side helping as an aloof, untouchable older sister – but even the most dull of humans could tell that behind that rough exterior… she actually cared enough for Samidare to

‘You know, Shigure, you can make it a lot less obvious.’ Really, you can’t help yourself from pointing it out. The way Shigure thought she was acting was a little too –

‘Obvious?’ Samidare tilts her head, raising a finger to her chin, seemingly confused.

‘Commander?’ Shigure goes pale, her mouth practically trembling as she turns to you at this point. You fight down a smirk – this had been the most she’d emoted since you’d had her transferred to your Division.

‘Samidare, Shigure’s only worried about you.’ You wave a hand. It really was just too obvious on your end not to acknowledge; in a strange sort of way, it was rather adorable that she was putting on this huffy act for her sister’s sake.

‘What are you talking about?’ Shigure huffs, cheeks red. ‘I’m – I’m not worried about her at all; as an experienced point man, it’s paramount for those who excel to continue to excel where they are required to do so. That’s right!’ Shigure puts her hands on her hips, prompting you to let out a small snicker – she really had a mood outside of the aloof, reckless, death-defying specialist you’d seen all this time. ‘Samidare isn’t cut out for the job of a point because she lacks experience in situations where she’s cut off from the group and required to engage – her job is to maintain as little a presence as possible in engaging units heavier than her. A – As she is, she’ll hardly be able to keep up with any Abyssal above her weight class!’

You let out a snort as Shigure puffs her chest in pride. That small tangent had apparently given her the confidence to fall back on a superior front… not that she wore it well. You’d seen too much of her to know that this was anything but a real stance.

‘That’s why I asked Shigure-nee!’ Samidare rounds on her, cheeks puffed.

Shigure falters a little, but otherwise, remains steadfast; you had to end this.

‘Well, if Samidare thinks she’s ready, I’m willing to give her a chance.’ You say in a sing-song voice. Neither pick up on it, taking the declaration at face value. Shigure looks in disbelief and despair… and Samidare looks hopeful. ‘There might be a covert op I’ll be picking up; Samidare can play point if – !’

‘NO!’ Shigure slams her hands on the table, glaring at you, a fire in her eyes.

She turns purple, realizing her mistake immediately after.

‘R – Really, Commander?’ Samidare’s eyes brighten at the proposal. You yourself almost nod to confirm – so hopeful was her stare; still… you manage to hold it together, giving Shigure a teasing look.

‘Well, if Shigure says no I can’t give my approval.’

‘How mean, Shigure-nee!’ Samidare pouts again.

Shigure says nothing.

‘That’s right. How mea – ?’

You stop mid-sentence. In fact, you feel an instant tinge of regret coming upon you as Shigure shakes, her hands balled into fists and her cheeks puffed – you make out tears at the corner of her eyes. Just as real as the time that you had taken things too far with her; Samidare tilts her head inquisitively, trying to make sense of her sister’s trembling form.

‘Shigure-neechan?’

‘Shigure?’

She drops to her knees, sobbing loudly.

‘H – Hey, come on, Shigure, you’re in front of Samidare, for crying out loud!’

‘I just want to be a good big sister!’ Shigure whines, sniffing audibly. ‘I know that Shiratsuyu-nee’s gone and I’m in charge now, but none of them ever listen to me! If I say she isn’t ready, she isn’t ready!’ ‘You don’t know how hard it is to go out there and be the one everyone’s counting on! How it’s dangerous and how so many of us Destroyers get killed out there! All I want is for her to take it one step at a time because I think that’s how it should go… I’m not trying to be mean to her! What kind of big sister do you think I am?’

‘Shigure…’ You wince – maybe you had taken things a little too far.

‘What kind of little sister do you think I am?’ Samidare – wonder of wonders – starts crying too, dropping to her knees and putting her hand on her shoulder. ‘All I wanna do is be like you and Yuudachi-nee, but you never give me the chance! Every time I go up to you – you say that you’re too busy or that I’m not good enough! I am good enough!’

Shigure’s glare at her sister is almost comical, what with the heavy snot hanging from her nose.

‘You don’t get it!’ She chastises, pinching the whining Samidare’s cheek ‘The Point Man position is dangerous! It’s not going out there and fighting and – and doing flips and special moves! You don’t understand just how horrible it is to have the whole team counting on you – as vanguard and the first contact force, you have to do more than just stay alive! How you do things is how your team moves after – you’re not cut out for that right now! Practice with the team!’

The advice may have been sound… but Shigure’s inelegant blubbering took some of the effect out of it.

‘See? You’re saying that again! Everyone says that to me!’ Samidare rubs her cheek, crying very loudly. ‘I hate you, Shigure-nee!

Why don’t you listen to me?’ Shigure scolds, pinching both her cheeks, still crying.

‘I hate you! I hate you!’ Samidare pulls Shigure's cheeks.

‘Come on, you two, stop it.’

You approach the both of them – still pulling each others cheeks and crying like a pair of middle school students over being denied the last pastry. You bend down and put your elbows on your knees – a bit of an effort, considering the size of your gut… although, you do admit it’s a little easier to do now that you’d lost quite a bit of weight since you’d begun your tenure as Division Commander. They look up at you, comically pinching their features, pictures of defiance forming in their eyes.

But… Commander!’ They both whine in unison. Again, you wonder why you hadn’t caught on to the fact that they were sisters as quickly as you think you should have – their mannerism, while different, did have an intangible, common element to them.

Still, you would have none of it. Taking a firm stance, you glare at the both of them; not threateningly, of course, but enough to tell them that if they dared to question you anymore than they had, you would follow through with all the implications behind it.

‘Do I need to put you both over my knee?’ You inwardly grimace at the thought. You must sound more like a chastising parent than a man gifted the position of Division Commander.

It got the job done enough, though. The both of them stop crying and release each other’s cheeks, turning to you in a formal seiza, but not before throwing each other annoyed, tearful glances. Samidare fidgets in place as she waits for your words of judgment – Shigure, in comparison, is a lot more composed… although you do feel that the effect is lost a little with large swinging snot goop hanging from her nose. You give them both withering looks – a warning that all you wanted from either was their silence and their ears turned on. KanMusu or no, this kind of dissent was intolerable.

You begin with Samidare – she’d started the whole thing, really, so it was a logical progression on your end to start with her. As she meets your good eye, she begins to tremble in fear – you don’t know whether that’s a good thing or a bad one; you’d always treated Samidare with dainty hands due to the fact that she’d been immature in combat skill and judgment. Upon realizing that, you concede that maybe she did have a point… and maybe she did deserve to be treated a little better.

There was no time like the present.

‘Samidare, you need to understand. Being a Point Man isn’t fun and games – in this war, I don’t think anything’s fun and games – but the responsibility that it shoulders… it’s not something anyone remotely rational would aim for, let alone think is a position of privilege. It’s more than doing fancy spins and flips and having techniques… it’s about knowing that even away from your team that you’re still part of it. You are the first contact unit and the one responsible for establishing a holding action if we ever need it.’

Having said that, you end up feeling a little pleased with yourself. The Admiral would have been proud – here you were… no longer a pushover! Samidare bites her lip, looking downwards – she probably hadn’t expected you to throw that kind of question her way… still, it was the right one to ask.

‘Just what do you think it’s about that you believe it’s such a good place to be?’ You question her further, concern in your voice.

‘I… I just want to prove myself…’ Samidare twiddles her thumbs, mumbling the words.

‘This war is about survival; it’s about winning, and Heaven help me, for me, it’s about keeping as many of the people safe and keeping all of you breathing at the end of the day.’ Samidare looks at you in surprise. You press on – maybe if you took a more drastic stance, she’d be a little bit more honest with her feelings. ‘I don’t think beyond that. Would you take a chance to prove yourself as a Point Man if it meant leaving Shigure dead?’

‘N – NO!’ She says loudly, regretfully looking downcast. ‘I… I won’t…’

‘If you can’t realize that part without me asking you, you’re not ready.’ Your words cut – Samidare looks thoroughly ashamed, now. Still, you didn’t want to seem like a cruel Commander. ‘But that doesn’t mean I won’t ever not consider you – it’s just that, right now, you have a whole lot of learning to do… and that’s where you, Shigure, need to fulfill your duties.’

‘B – But – !’ Shigure looks between you and Samidare, surprised at the request.

‘I know that you’re worried for Samidare. That she’s going to take a bad turn and end up at the bottom of the – !’ Shigure looks absolutely frightened right now, her lips tremble and her eyes widen, shocked at the very idea. ‘Shigure, I didn’t mean that she was going to; I’m just saying in the supposed event Samidare ends up dead, that – !’

Wrong choice of words. Samidare immediately lunges at Shigure, who openly receives her in a protective embrace.

Nee-san!

I – I won’t let you take my sister!’ Shigure declares, glaring – trembling – at you.

When did you up being the villain?

‘If you understand that… then you know that regardless of whatever she wants, you’ll teach her what she needs to know.’ You emphasize. Better they work together against you than come apart because of each other. ‘I won’t put her on the front line of an assault – Samidare, quiet.’ You point a finger at Samidare, instantly getting her to keep quiet. ‘But if there’s anyone who can show her just what to and what not to do, I don’t think that there’s anyone more suited to it than you.’

‘Shigure, Samidare needs you.’ Samidare turns red. 'Samidare, Shigure's your family, whatever happens.'

They nod slowly.

Shigure’s snot hits Samidare’s chin.

Luckily for you, you have a handkerchief for such occasions. Standard issue for all Officers.

‘Stay still.’ You take out your handkerchief, wiping away at Samidare’s chin. ‘You got a little something there.’

Samidare closes her eyes as she waits for you to be done – as soon as you are, you move on to the rather apprehensive Shigure. Although she’s reluctant at first, she relents at your action after, blowing into your handkerchief by your command. Grimacing as you pull away, you wonder if the laundry department would take a piece of cloth as damp with snot and mucus as this was. You let out a disgusted sound, folding the thing in half and putting it aside. No sense having it in your pocket, as moist as it was.

‘So you both understand, right? What we just talked about?’ You get back on topic, looking seriously at the both of them.

‘Yes, Commander.’ Samidare nods again, looking regretful.

‘Yes, sir.’ Shigure mumbles. That’s as much as you would get – more than you had ever thought of getting out of her, really, before today.

You look from one to the other, satisfied with each of their responses – or as satisfied as you could be. You’re actually rather pleased that you hadn’t descended into a superior, condescending and antagonistic tone as so many had. Not that it didn’t have its uses, but the fact that you’d held your patience well enough was as much a surprise to you as it was to find that you were actually running your post as a Division Commander. You had never done collected or nuanced as much as you had now – and certainly more than you had before you’d taken up the task.

Maybe it was the ego in you – as Nagato had pointed out so many times – but you instantly feel in a better mood… and felt the need to extend the gesture to your two Destroyers.

‘All right, so…’ You cough into your fist, giving your knuckles a good rub-down. ‘Does anyone want anything when Tenryuu and I head inland tomorrow?’

‘Inland?’ Shigure tilts her head to one side.

‘Eh, how mean! You didn’t want to take us?’

‘The Admiral needs all hands on deck – I’m only even able to go inland because of a special request… and it’s only for a day.’

The next hour or so, you, Shigure and Samidare, lock yourselves into a strange round of negotiations. Samidare didn’t want anything specific from town… but she did request to follow you and Tenryuu into Kishin Metro, even though you had already put Iowa in that slot. It was rather hard to make it clear to her that she just wasn’t coming… even Shigure found difficulty in undertaking the effort.

‘But Commander, if there’s no one else to play – !’

Your ears pick up the sound of rapping by the door – someone was at the entrance.

‘Why don’t the both of you head on upstairs… I think I’ll take this one.’ You say with a smile, gesturing at them to head up the stairs. Samidare and Shigure give each other looks, before bowing respectfully to you and making their way to the Hallway.

The rapping goes louder by the second. You remind yourself just who would be at the other side of the door, and just what it would mean for you to screw this up. Your mind is clouded by the idea of a clone of Taigei, half as sly and twice as devious, looking into your affairs to find just where you’d screwed up… or even worse, looking into where any of your KanMusu had screwed. An anxious feeling comes upon you, prompting you to grit your teeth as you make your way into the hallway towards the sound. You remember Takao’s words and Nagato’s warning… and, of course, Nachi’s convoluted plot to get her off your scent.

Right now, you’d play it cool. Whatever Iowa and you had in store could wait for later, right now, you’d have to misdirect her from the misdirect – to play not into her expectation, but into her interests… to give her something she had not foreseen but to latch onto with her jaws as hard as she could, away from the crux or core of the matter. Letting out a breath, you find yourself in front of the door, quicker than you’d expected, never mind how short the so-called trek was.

You turn the knob, opening the door… revealing a girl in what looked like a grade school swimsuit.

How strange.

‘Good evening.’ The girls speaks up. ‘I presume that you are the First Division Commander?’

You frown as you take in her appearance…

She was an energetic-looking pink blob, even though you could tell she was rather subdued… and rather short with a little bit of weight on her thighs and hips. You’d argue that she would qualify as a shortstack… or a girl that had reached puberty far too early than she – or anyone else – had expected. But the thing that had caught onto you most… was her smile. Wide and enthusiastic, you’d seen it much too often on the faces of others to accept it as a friendly gesture; it was practiced, intimidating and above all else, stretched, although you could tell that she wasn’t bothering to hide it.

From your experience in the service industry… it was a business smile with no intention of following through with the courtesy that it usually implied. A niggling feeling at the back of your head suspects that she wasn’t trying particularly hard at this, either.

‘I am.’ You greet in return, nodding and bowing in respect, your brows creased. ‘Would it be correct for me to assume that you’re who the Court of Admirals sent to keep an eye on me?’

‘Ma’am.’

‘Excuse me?’

‘When you address me,’ She giggles, her eyes narrowing into slits as she jumps enthusiastically, leaving you a little unhinged, ‘you will address me as… Ma’am.

The tone in her voice is soft and teasing… but the warning is there. Her face lights up in a strange show of annoyance, expecting you to follow through with her request. Her command. You remember Nachi’s words over Takao’s and Nagato’s warnings to not catch the eye of the Submarine, but if any misdirect would have any effect later, you would have to play through.

‘Sir.’

‘Excuse me?’ She smiles visibly now, tilting her head to one side.

‘When you address me… you will address me as Commander, or Sir,’ You pause for a moment – seeing a flash of something come across her features, before going on, ‘as a sign of mutual respect, of course, Ma’am. We are still rank and file, after all.’

‘Oh!’ She brightens up considerably after, giggling behind a raised hand. ‘Of course, Commander.’

She curtsies with an invisible dress, pinching her thumb and middle finger against each other as the large torpedo – it couldn’t be anything but – behind her wobbles worryingly, although you can see that it’s securely fasted – no, there were two – to her back, along with her strap.

‘I-58.’ She says with a light giggle. ‘Goya of the Hunter’s Lodge, at your service… or against, Commander.’

‘I know about the details… ma’am.’ You concede, giving your own respectful bow… but leaving a hint of casualness – it would do well to leave a few openings right now.

After all, you’d punched your card as a player for this game of cat and mouse.

‘So, Commander, shall we?’

You gesture her inside.

‘How are you?’ You try to sound as professional as you can with the question, leading her into the common room.

‘Transport was adequate.’ She answers immediately. ‘I would have preferred using the coast to get down here – it would have taken less time compared to the shuttle.’ She laughs, raising her hands to either side. ‘Protocol is protocol, I suppose – I don’t know who they’d send after me.’

Goya makes her way to one of the chairs in front of your desk as you make your way to your own, setting yourself down. You would have offered her a seat, but she was already making herself at home, giving the place a good once over with curious eyes, before settling on you and crossing her legs in a manner that was rather casual for the policing body of the Admiralty. You bring your chair close to the desk, folding your fingers on your desk as you wait for her to speak. You’d already initiated the topic… if you followed through with the inquiries right now, she’d think you were a blabbermouth.

‘It’s interesting to know that you’re curious enough about my journey to inquire about it, Commander.’ She flashes a grin, putting her hands on her knees. ‘Just what is it did you hoped to get out of me?’

‘I didn’t mean anything by it.’ You answer half-truthfully. A part of you just considered it courtesy to ask how someone was after a drive that lasted several hours… and the other was probing her for anything that she would give away; so far, all you got were a few twitches and a name. ‘I was just trying to be courteous… ma’am.’

‘Oh, good manners will get you far, Division Commander.’ She says cheerfully, clapping her hands together and giggling again. ‘People usually wouldn’t be so welcoming to the one wounding the rope for their executioner.’

You say nothing, leaning back in your chair.

‘Did I get to you?’ She grins – by your observation, that had probably been a joke, but by the approach that Takao and Nagato had taken with the very idea of Submarines on their base, you’re not quite sure if that wasn’t a threat, either.

‘A little.’ You concede – no sense to play the defiant blowhard when she could latch on so easily… or so your assume. She was great in what she did… you could tell she was probing you, but you find yourself comfortable enough on a sub-conscious level to give it away.

The last five minutes had given an idea of just how dangerous this girl was – is.

‘You don’t have to be intimidated by me.’ She hums, cocking her head to one side. ‘Just do what you do.’

Sir.’ You correct her.

‘Excuse me?’

‘We promised that we would be more formal in our agreement, ma’am.’ You say coolly. ‘I would address you as ma’am… and you would address me as sir… ma’am.’

Goya doesn’t respond.

‘Ma’am, about your lodgings… do you have them sorted out?’ You inquire, crossing your legs and pushing back your chair. ‘I haven’t been given a request for your stay on the barracks… so I didn’t clear a room for you.’

She looks at you in surprise, before letting out an amused snort.

‘Oh, Commander, you silly goose!’ She immediately takes an informal stance, waving her hand at you. ‘Of course I won’t be staying on your grounds!’ She bares her teeth, tickled pink by the very prospect it would seem. ‘There’s a saying you know… you don’t stick the wolves together with the sheep, my dear sir.’ She hums loudly, clapping her hands together. ‘That’d just be unethical.’

You don’t rise to it – if there was anything you’d learned from your encounter with Taigei it was to not veer too much off your initial point. You wanted her to latch on… but not right now and not on this.

‘Still, if you’re not staying on-site, I’d like to know where I can usually find you, ma’am.’ You say with insistence, adding in a reasonable motive for the inquiry. ‘In the event that I’d be under orders to do so, of course…’

She nods, chirping.

‘Well, since you asked so nicely… I believe you’re familiar with the former site of the Prep Dock XJ-9.’ You nod – that’s where youd launched from before/ ‘For the time being, it will serve for my temporary… work space, if you will,’ ‘when I’m off-duty, you will be able to find me on the base.’

‘The base? That’s finished?’

‘Oh no, of course not.’ She waves her hands again, denying the notion. ‘But due to the nature of my work, I can’t exactly be placed on a barracks without making the Forces or Divisions a little…’ she cricks her neck, ‘paranoid, as I’ve said.’

‘I understand, ma’am.’

‘That being said, I hope that you’re not turned off at my arrival.’ She makes a disappointed frown – you don’t read into it, turning your ears on to listen. ‘You see, we’re all just doing our role in this war… and sometimes you need people to keep other people working. There’s not much of a difference between the both of us, you know, despite how dissimilar our scopes are.’ She leans back, smiling again. ‘You keep your Division in line… and I’m the threat that keeps them from wanting to toe it.’

You don’t argue with her.

‘I suppose if you put it that way, ma’am, there’s not much I can say to go either way with it.’ She nods agreeably with your statement. You go on, sighing. ‘War is war… and we’re all working towards the same end game. Same side and all that.’

Goya folds her hands.

‘That we are.’

You just think that it wasn’t worth the pound of flesh that she probably sought after.

‘How long will this inspection take, then?’ You inquire even deeper, your lips thinning into a line. ‘Ma’am?’

‘Not any longer than it has to be.’ There’s truth in her voice… and a tiredness that goes with it, although as far as you were concerned, it could be a misdirect of her own. ‘For your sake and for mine, I hope you don’t put too much on my plate. I’m not sure if I can cope.’ She lets out an affected, annoyed sigh. ‘Things can just be so troublesome sometimes… but we do what we’re told, don’t we?’

You keep to your question. There was no sense in you trying to focus on what she’d dropped – it was her concern and not yours. The less personal you got with her, the better the actions worked.

‘So how long would it take, ma’am?’

Goya puts on a bored expression, resting her elbows on her lap and leaning forward.

‘You don’t strike me as the eager type, Commander.’ She grins. ‘Are you so keen to be rid of me?’

‘I’d be lying if I said you made me feel comfortable… especially considering the circumstances.’

‘And what would those circumstances be?’

Despite yourself – and the warnings by Takao and Nagato, you bite.

‘That I’ve been a very naughty boy.’

You inwardly groan as the words leave your mouth, but otherwise try to keep the amusement in your expression and tone as blatantly subtle as possible. Despite having been around so many people in your life, you find it hard to keep your comments to yourself at times… maybe it was just your nature, but of all times you have to question: why did you seem to seek out the most inopportune moments for it to just get out there?

It Takao saw you right now, you think she’d be glaring holes into the back of your head.

‘Oh, Commander, you are a barrel of laughs!’

She hums innocently, much to your surprise. You’d thought that she’s drop in on your moment… but she’d apparently give a pass

‘As long as you behave and do your job, I won’t have any reason to stay more than I’ve already been given.’ Her lips scowl briefly – enough that you catch it. ‘I don’t like being here – it’s not my particular element… I’ve always been partial to things a lot more… on-hand then subterfuge, despite the nature of my post.’ She tilts her head sideways, a dullness in her eyes as she looks straight at you. ‘I have to be truthful with you, sir – humans don’t interest me as much as they should… even when they’re Commanders.’

You say nothing.

Goya, in a sudden motion, hops to her feet and gathers her things.

‘Well, well, I suppose that’s it for today!’ She declares cheerfully, giving a playful salute. ‘So behave, behave, behave! Or Goya spank!

She makes her way to the entryway… before turning over her shoulder, flashing another smile.

‘Oh… and before I forget, sir. Please enjoy your day with Tenryuu and the newcomer tomorrow.

Sorry, folks, I know I was supposed to do this hours ago, but two things happened:

1. I felt very under the weather quite suddenly.
2. Air conditioning has gone bust and even if I wanted to, it's too hot to run this for now.

Questions are open, as always, if people want to put things on the table... or any suggestions on improvements I can make to the quest aside from typos. Which are inevitable on my part, given the case and pace I operate at.

Be excellent to one another.

I was asking about how many IDs each person uses in the thread, for example I got two, and I was hoping from there to get a guess of how many of us there actually are in this quest.

Though going by that time MECH asked what our time zones were, there's about ten or so of us total.

Sometimes I wonder if the 'only a third ever votes' rule applies here, and there's actually 30 people reading total.

I don't really pay attention to that. A score doesn't do much to help me on where I've gone wrong - as long as I'm not making people leave the table due to bad progression and mechanics, I'm fine with negatives. It's all about the table and if the people at that table enjoy it.
