/qst/ - Quests

>This is a quest taking place in the Fullmetal Alchemist setting, beginning at roughly the same time as the original story. However, some parts of the setting have been slightly altered. You will be playing as a Iskander Steiner, a young alchemist, who will develop based on the choices made by the players. Remember that write-ins are always welcome, and to have fun.

Mustang leans back in his chair after hearing your report on Leore from Leah. You made sure to cover specifically the parts relating to your mission, the investigation of Letoism and whether it posed a threat to Amestris. That includes everything you learned about the priest, but you left out the other encounter you had while in Leore.

"I see. Thank you for your hard work." the Lieutenant Colonel tells you. "From what you've said, I don't think we have any reason to take further action. If the priest was as off put by the Ishvalans as you say, then we don't have to worry about a similar situation reoccurring. That's good. In fact, we're lucky this is the case. With the New Optain situation happening now, hands will be full in the East sector for quite a while. Adding another new problem to the pool would have stretched the military pretty thin. Well, not that I'll be having any hand in it anymore..."

Mustang sighs, and gets up from his chair. From his dismissal of the topic, he seems annoyed.

"That'll be all from me. With pieces moving around like they are, I doubt you'll be getting another assignment soon. So feel free to take some time to study, or whatever you want. It's up to you. Will there be anything else before you go?"

It's nice to know that you'll get some free time for study, but you have one concern. With your commanding officer changing stations, you're not sure where that leaves you, or who you'll be taking orders from if you stay. You sign your question over to Leah, who relays it for you.

"Sir, we have a concern about your transfer." she tells the Lieutenant Colonel. "Will we being going to Central as well, or staying here? And if we stay, who are we to take orders from when you leave?"

"Yes, that..." Mustang puts his hand to his temple and sighs again. "I don't have any official word yet, but I can practically guarantee that you'll be staying under my command and moving to Central. The military seems to be consolidating all of its State Alchemists in the capital these days. Part of why I could get this transfer as a fresh Lieutenant Colonel. That aside, they usually prefer State Alchemists to keep ranks with each other, anyway. If there's a way to keep a State Alchemist under the command of another State Alchemist, they'll do it. However, don't expect it to be done soon. I'm going to be in an administrative position, but you aren't. They probably won't officially station you in Central for a few weeks, whereas I am making my transfer in a few days. That's just how it works I'm afraid, they won't do the legwork until they actually need you. But feel free to head to Central anyway if you please, since you don't know anyone around here, I wouldn't blame you for going on ahead. Like I said, the choice is really up to you. You get a lot of leeway in your position. Whatever you decide, try and stay out of trouble. I expect to see you doing just fine once they get around to reassigning you."

Mustang bids the two of you farewell, then gets back to organizing his things for the transfer.

You and Leah bid your own farewells to the others, then make your way back to your room. Once you get there, you realize how tired you are. After roughing it all that way, it'll be nice to have a comfortable bed again. But before that comes some proper food. You and Leah go down to the cafeteria for dinner, and are able to slowly enjoy a meal for the first time in days.

As you eat, you briefly consider what might be happening in New Optain. Was there anything you could have done, you wonder. But you quickly put such thoughts aside. Informing your superiors was really all you could have been expected to do in that situation. Either way, the Fuhrer is dealing with it now. As you and Leah finish and return to your room, you pull out Marcoh's notes to get a look at them, but Leah stops you with a hand on your shoulder.

"Oh no, if you start now you'll be up all night." she warns. "And after our travel, I need to make sure you get at least one good night's sleep before you go on another study binge."

You eventually relent, and turn in for the night. You find yourself glad you did, as the bed grants you a refreshing sleep that makes you feel energized upon waking up. You're ready to tackle those notes at 100% now.

You get to work on decoding the notes, but it's tough going. Doctor Marcoh has used layers upon layers of ciphers, and it takes all of your skill to be able to piece it all together. You have to cross reference back and forth countless times, sometimes even resorting to trial and error for segments until you can be sure you're on the right track. It's a lot of work for a single man. Leah can't help you research, so she does what she can by bringing up your meals to the room. You appreciate it, since it lets you work without breaking your concentration. You spend days on the notes, falling asleep right on top of them when you get too tired, and getting right back to work when you wake up. Then finally after nearly two weeks, you discover the truth.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_439qLQzHs&

To make a Philosopher's Stone, they extract human souls from their bodies. The souls are then expended in exchange for performing alchemy. The Philosopher's Stone doesn't transcend the Law of Equivalent Exchange at all. You just weren't aware of the units it used. That red liquid you saw before with Marcoh... it was made from human souls. People died to create it. At the military's insistence.

"Isk, are you alright?" Leah's voice snaps you out of your trance. "You stopped moving a bit ago. Did you figure something out? You look worried."

Taking a few more seconds to collect yourself, you decide to tell Leah exactly what you just learned. No doubt she can handle it just as well as you can, and you've never been one to hide anything from her. Now is no time to start, especially with something this big. You sign to her what you found out. The true nature of the Philosopher's Stone. Leah is quiet for a while after you sign to her, so you start to wonder if she actually understood. However, she does eventually confirm it for you.

"Isk, you might be getting in way over your head here." Leah warns you. "If the military is really willing to kill people to turn them into fuel to perform alchemy... Who knows what kind of lengths they'll go to. I'm not saying that we should desert or anything, I really like a lot of the colleagues we've met, but... It might be better for us to keep our heads down. There's probably someone up there in the ranks that wouldn't hesitate to dispose of us if they found out what we know. I know you usually can't help yourself when it comes to this kind of thing, but... For your own safety, I really think you shouldn't look further into this. If you do... The better life that you joined the military to obtain will be turned around on you. And I... I won't be able to protect you by myself..."

You consider what Leah says, but don't answer her. Something else occurs to you. The Elric brothers have probably already learned the truth about the Philosopher's Stone themselves. And given how determined they are, the knowledge alone probably isn't enough to stop their search. They will surely dig deeper to find another solution to get Alphonse's body back. You sign your concern to Leah.

"Isk..." Leah's eyes are trained on you. To you, they look kind of like the eyes of someone who isn't satisfied with a response. But it's only momentary, before Leah closes her eyes and sighs. "You're right about that. They could be in a lot of danger right now, and they are our friends. We need to make sure they're not doing anything reckless either. We did say that we'd help when we could."

You and Leah pack your things and immediately head off to the train station. You consider disposing of the notes, but you decide to put that choice off for a bit longer, and take them with you.

One train ride later, you and Leah are back in Central, in all its glory.

"We can only hope they're still in town. I called earlier, but I couldn't get a hold of them." Leah worries. "At the very least, Colonel Armstrong will know what they've been up to."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-W7xveVzUw&index=26&

You and Leah head to the Colonel's office, and find him at his desk. He's considerably less energetic than you expected to see him. You could mistake him for a normal person right now. You get the impression that he's playing it cool.

"Iskander and Leah?" he asks as come in. "It's good to see you again. What brings you back to Central? Did you follow Mustang? I can direct you to his new office, if necessary."

You decide to follow the Colonel's lead and approach the matter tactfully. If something had happened, you wouldn't want to let on more than you had to. You sign a pleasant response and greeting over to Leah.

"That would be very helpful, thank you Sir." Leah replies for you. "How are you doing, Colonel? You seem a bit serious today."

"Ah, yes. Well, some serious matters came up, and I need to deal with them accordingly." Armstrong says, before telling you and Leah how to get to Mustang's office and writing down the directions on paper for you. "Not anything I can disclose freely, you understand."

The Colonel looks both of you right in the eyes. A look that says he would surely tell you if he could, but it's not possible. Such a direction must have come from higher. You're sure this concerns the Elrics. You sign a question about them over to Leah.

"Sir, we were actually hoping to see the Elric brothers." she tells the Colonel. "They came to Central for some research, last we heard."

"Yes, they were here until just a few days ago, in fact." Armstrong tells you, his gaze serious again. "Edward was even in the hospital for a while, got into a bit of a scuffle, I heard. But he's fine now. The boys have headed South. Apparently after the Sowing Life Alchemist, Shou Tucker. No one has heard a word from him in weeks, and they were getting worried. Last they heard, he was headed for Dublith."

"Dublith..." Leah mutters under her breath.

Yes, Dublith. It might be a bit troublesome to go there, but you have to. You're a bit concerned as well. But before you go, you want to try and get something else out of the Colonel. You sign your intention over to Leah, who follows up.

"Sir, is there anything you can tell us about what the brothers have been up to?" Leah asks. "You said they got into a scuffle, what was that about?"

Armstrong looks like he really wants to tell you, but he remains firm.

"Sorry, I don't really know." he says. "Must have taken a wrong turn somewhere and gotten in trouble. You'll have to ask them when you catch up. Maybe they can tell you more."

It seems that's all you'll get out of him. You and Leah thank the Colonel for his help and leave.

"So we're heading South.." Leah says, as the two of you head for the station again. "We could get into a lot of trouble down there, you know. But I am worried about Tucker. I hope he didn't do anything too crazy down there. His daughter was with him, so he should have played it safe, but now I don't know."

Your worries fester the whole train ride down, until you finally arrive in Dublith. You take in the familiar sight. You didn't expect to be back here so soon.

"How are we going to find them?" Leah asks. "We could ask around. Or maybe even head straight for the Devil's Nest. Tucker is sure to have gone there."

Before you start walking around Dublith, you make sure to take a precaution. You ask Leah how much she owed that guy at the Devil's Nest. She's a bit hesitant to tell you, but you eventually wrench it out of her. It's a sizable amount, but the grant you got can still cover it. You'll need to be careful not to spend too recklessly for a while, however. You write out a check for the amount, and have it ready. That much at least should be a decent icebreaker if you need it.

After that, you decide to head to someone you know quite well. Your teacher and her husband. They should be able to tell you if they've seen the Elrics or Tucker around.

Surprisingly, this train of thought makes your search a lot easier than you thought. As you pull up to the Curtis house, you find the Elric brothers playing in the front yard with Nina and Alexander, just the way you met them weeks ago.

You take a minute to process this, as nearly everyone you were looking for just happened to be in the first place you went to. You quickly turn to Leah and sign your questions, lamenting more then ever your inability to speak, and the extra time it will take you to get answers.

"Why are you all here?" Leah asks, once she manages to make out the meaning in the flurry of your signing. "Not just the Elrics, but Nina and Alexander, too... Is Tucker here?"

"No... We haven't been able to find him." Ed fills you in as you all watch Al play with the little girl and her dog. "We checked out the bar he supposedly went to, but the place was deserted. We have no idea what happened. As for us, we just heard there was a talented alchemist in the area and wanted to meet her. Lo and behold, we find Nina and Alexander here. You decide that you should go inside and get a word in with your teacher. First though, you sign over to Leah something to tell Ed.

"Edward, we need to talk to you about the Philosopher's Stone." Leah says, to which Ed perks up. "And about what you've been up to."

"Yeah, I got it. We can talk later." Ed starts making his way back over to his brother and Nina. "When we can keep it a bit more secret."

So that's an idea for later. You and Leah start to head in, and stop briefly to pat Nina on the head.

"How are you doing, Nina?" Leah asks. "Are you okay without your father here?"

"I'm doing okay." Nina smiles. "I'm not lonely, I have Alexander with me, and Mr. and Mrs. Curtis are really nice. And now Edward and Alphonse came to see me, too. Even though I wish daddy would come back, I'm having fun."

You smile back and sign to Leah to tell Nina that Izumi and Sig are good people. After Nina and the others go back to playing, you and Leah go inside. You find your teacher sitting at a table. She looks at you as you enter.

"Iskander and Leah. I didn't expect you to come back so soon." she says. Her words seem harsh, but you can feel that she's a lot calmer than the last time you saw her. "But I have to apologize. I went a bit too far last time. You'll have to forgive me."

You wave off your teacher's apology, it's really no problem. You're the one who messed up. You sign as much for Leah to convey, along with your questions.

"It's nothing to worry about, Mrs. Curtis. No harm done." Leah tells her. "So what is going on with Nina and Alexander here? And also, how was meeting the Elrics?"

You noticed Izumi looking intently as you signed, and how she smiles once Leah conveys your questions.

"Looks like you've got a nice little setup here, Isk." your teacher grins. "You seem to be doing alright for yourself. Can't condone becoming a dog of the military, but those boys seem alright as well. They're good kids. When we spoke, obviously the topic turned to the elephant in the room. We can transmute without a circle, so we've all attempted human transmutation. Like I said, I apologize for being so hard on you before. Those boys were devastated enough at the loss of their mother to try it, and I realized that you and I have been in the same place. As your former teacher, I let myself forget that to focus on the fact that you disobeyed me, but that isn't fair. Now, as for Nina..."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUF7jOM8Mp8&index=8&

Izumi gets up from her chair, and walks over to the window. She watches Nina and the brothers playing from it for a while before speaking again.

"Tucker had been looking around town for someone to look after his daughter and her dog for a while. He said he was going to be doing something dangerous, and they couldn't be exposed to it." your teacher looks back to you. "I told the brothers out there that I expected him to come back, but... That's not entirely true. The way he left was ominous. While he was here, he was playing and laughing with Nina. They looked quite happy together. But once we agreed to watch her and he went to leave, his tone changed. 'You're very good people, I'm sure Nina will be happy here.', he said. The way he said it, it was like he thought he wouldn't be coming back. We haven't heard word of him since then."

You take another look out at Nina playing. She's happy for now, but how long could it last before her father's absence weighed down on her. And why would he fail to return? The questions swirl around in you head, until your focus is broken by your teacher.

"Well, I'm about to start dinner. Your're all welcome to join us. It will be nice to have company."

While you wait for your teacher to fix dinner, you and Leah go back outside and watch the Elric brothers play with Nina and Alexander a while longer. They run around the yard playing tag, and various other games. Although Ed has been serving in the military for three years, and has taken on a lot of responsibility for someone his age, you can tell that he's still got a childish side to him. His brother is no exception. At times, you find it hard to believe that the boy in that huge suit of armor is only fourteen, but it seems obvious when you watch him now. These two boys even younger than you have started to delve into a dangerous world. Those on the darker side of the military certainly won't give them any leeway because they're children. Could you really just keep out of the matter for your own safety, while they put themselves into even more danger? As you ponder the question, another thought creeps into your head. Is that really your concern, or are you just telling yourself that so you'll have an excuse to dive deeper yourself? You always did hate leaving questions unanswered.

Eventually, dinner is ready and everyone goes inside to eat. Save for Alphonse of course, but he sits with you all at the table anyway. With seven people seated at the table eating dinner, it's quite lively. As you all eat you talk about various things, though Nina does more talking than anyone. She talks about how much fun she had today, playing with everyone for the first time in a long while. You see your teacher smiling wide. You don't think you've ever seen her quite that happy. Her smile is dampened a bit when she hears Nina's hope for her dad to come back soon, but she puts it back on and gives the girl a reassuring pat on her head.

Eventually it becomes late, and Sig takes the tired Nina to her room, Alexander following them. That leaves you and Leah, Izumi, and the Elric brothers at the table. The mood shifts and becomes more serious now. Everyone present knows there are things to discuss.

You're worried about the Tucker situation as well, but first thing's first. You need the Elrics to fill you in. You sign over to Leah to tell them that you know the truth, and to ask just what they got themselves into.

"Edward, Alphonse. Isk decoded the notes and found out the truth of the Philosopher's Stone." she tells the brothers. "No doubt you managed beforehand, though. Something happened to you guys back in Central. What was it?"

"We were given orders from on high to keep it all under wraps, but I think we can trust you. At least, I know for sure that Isk won't say anything." Ed chuckles a bit to himself at his joke, then looks to Izumi. "But are we sure we want Mrs. Curtis here to know? Wouldn't it be better if she didn't get involved?"

You shake your head and get ready to sign a rebuttal, but you don't need to.

"Nonsense." your teacher says. "I thought this boy everything he knows, if he can handle it, I can handle it. And at least I'll have an inkling of just how reckless you're getting."

"Well, alright." Ed starts. "As soon as we found out that Philosopher's Stones were made from human souls, we decided that we'd find another way. But to do that, we needed more information. So we sneaked into the Fifth Laboratory."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lF6cRCb9u8M&

"It was mostly abandoned, but there were three people inside to guard it." Alphonse continues. People like me, who were souls bound to suits of armor. They were death row inmates from the prison next door that had been experimented on by the researchers there."

"They tried to fight us off when we broke in. I got my arm busted up again in that fight, too." Ed says. "Winry had to come out to fix it while I was recovering in the hospital. Anyway, inside the lab, I saw the circle they used for the transmutation. The one they used to turn people into Philosopher's Stones. Unfortunately, the building is all rubble now. That woman must have rigged it to collapse. The woman with the ouroboros tattoo. I don't know anything about her, but she knocked me out and threw me out of the building before it collapsed."

"She called Ed a 'precious resource'." Al adds. "And said to be more careful."

"Well, that's the long and short of it." Ed sighs. "We managed to get more new questions than answers."

As you think this over, you look to see Izumi processing this as well. The true nature of the Philosopher's Stone alone was probably quite shocking.

This kind of thing is certainly something the military would rather keep under wraps, so it would be best to know exactly who is in the know. You sign the question over for Leah to ask, along with one about their future plans.

"Ed, who else knows about this?" she asks. And do you have any idea about what you're going to do next?"

"Besides the people in this room, there are five others who know about this incident and the truth about the Philosopher's Stone." Edward replies. "Colonel Armstrong's subordinates, Lieutenant Ross and Sergeant Brosh were assigned to guard us and were there at the lab when it went down. Then later in my hospital room, the Colonel himself along with Lieutenant Colonel Hughes got filled in. That's when the Fuhrer himself came in. He looked things over, then said none of us were to tell anybody anything. So, you know, make sure it doesn't get out that I told you guys or I'll be in big trouble. The Fuhrer said that high ranking positions in the military have been infiltrated, and we can't be too careful. The business in New Optain was one of his examples. As for what we're gonna do next... We're not really sure yet."

"We're running out of leads." Al speaks up. "We don't really have any way of finding out who has their hand in all this. If we knew how to find that tattooed woman, that would be a sure lead, but..."

"There was one other bit that concerned them." your teacher adds. "About why Alphonse can't transmute without a circle. We think he must have seen the truth, but lost his memory of it. You need to find how you can get it back."

"Right, that too." Ed sighs. "Hopefully that's easier than getting his body back."

With that said, you sign to Leah to bring up the other topic.

"And what do we do about this Tucker situation?" she asks. "You said you weren't able to find him. Do we stay here and keep looking?"

"We don't know if he's skipped town already or not." Ed responds. "If he has, there's little point in sticking around, ourselves. Al and I are heading back tomorrow morning. But if you think you can find a clue, feel free to look around. We figure that even if we can't find him, Tucker will turn up sooner or later. He wouldn't just leave his daughter here and abandon her. He must just be laying low. The question is, from who? But I don't think we really have a way of finding out right now."

The hour is getting late. It's nearly midnight.

Before turning in, you decide to bring up one last thing. The reason why Tucker came down this way in the first place. You sign the message over to Leah.

"There's one more thing we want to say." she tells the others. "Tucker first decided to come down here after hearing from us about human chimeras that we met in this town. They were at the bar you went to search before, the Devil's Nest."

"Human chimeras?" Ed asks. "That's the first we've heard of it. And you're sure?"

"We are." Leah replies. "When we told Tucker, he was acting kind of strange. When we said that they could have been secret experiments by the military, he started muttering under his breath that they were laughing at him, and so on. He was so focused on renewing his certification before, but his focus completely changed after we told him."

"Well, his recertification is overdue as of last week." Ed replies. "That's why they wanted someone to look into this. But you are right. He was working himself to the bone on his research. He must have felt betrayed to know the military was keeping their more advanced chimera work secret. Which by the way, after this Philosopher's Stone business, I don't doubt. I think if we see Tucker again... He may not be on our side. If he really has turned against the military, that would explain why he left Nina here. They'll try to get rid of him for sure."

You look to Izumi. From her face, you can tell that she's sure this is the case. It would explain Tucker's behavior.

"Alright, that's enough speculating for tonight." your teacher gets up. "You kids need to get some rest. I have enough extra room for you, so I don't mind at all."

You all take Izumi up on her offer, and spend the night in her guest rooms. After eating breakfast together in the morning, Ed and Al get ready to head back for the station.

"So what are you guys going to do?" he asks. "Are you coming with us, or do you still have business here?"

Theory:
Shouldn't we be able to bring Al's body back by using human transmutation?

First time anyone did it it was bound to fail as while all of people that tried brought necessary material components they were trying to create something with soul and obviously there was no soul in the mix so rebound was unavoidable.
But if we put Al and all necessary material elements in transmutation circle we will have all required materials in it and transmutation would not violate law of equivalent exchange as we do not try to create anything ex nihilo.

If not we may use old good vat grown body parts to help Elrics.

Also is our inability to speak result of damaged vocal chords or brain damage problem?
>>
>>688245
The reason Ed got Al's soul back was cause his soul costed about as much as an arm. And Ed got his arm back in the series end cause Al gave up his soul for Ed to get his arm back. And Ed got Al back, original body and soul, by giving up his ability to use alchemy.

So here's the deal. We either give up our alchemy or something as good another human life or a random Philosophers' stone we find on the ground to get Al's body. Cause you can't cheat Truth. Everything has a price.

Also, it's not damaged vocal chords. It's no vocal chords. That was our payment for getting the Truth.
>>
>>688179
>A.We're coming along
>>
>>688245

It's basically based on the fundamental theory of alchemy the "Law of Equivalent exchange" We gave up our vocal chords in exchange for what we received.
>>
>>688273
I know who paid what for what and I know that we can't cheat the truth.
But we don't have to pay for Al's soul as we already have it, so we "only" need to create soulless body as host for his soul, without getting original back, building a flesh golem.
We can manipulate organic tissue as there is healing alchemy only question is where is border between it and human transmutation.
It is possible to artificially grow body part if not whole body, and we should be able to speed it up with alchemy and then transfer Al soul or hire a skilled surgeon for transplantation in Ed's case.

Only reason for not using transplantation instead of automails is lack of tissue compatibility as surgery precision in Amestris seems to be on higher level than ours(and usefulness of mechanical body part).

You could stay here and keep looking around, but you decide that it'd be better to stick together. Ever since you both encountered Scar separately, you've each been getting into more and more trouble. Rather than learn about it after the fact, next time you should just be there so you can help. you sign your answer for Leah to relay.

"We're coming along." she tells the brothers. "We might not find anything here, and we'd rather stick together."

The four of you say your goodbyes to Izumi, Sig, and Nina. Promising that you'll come back soon.

"When daddy comes back, we can see you on our way home to East City." Nina says. "I'm sure he'll be back soon, so we'll see you then."

Everyone is a bit apprehensive at this, but play along when Izumi reassures the girl.

"That's right, he'll be back for you and you'll be on your way home before you know it." she says, hugging the girl. "Which is a little sad for me, because I'll miss you a whole lot."

You and the Elric brothers head for the station, and catch a train North.

"By the way, Winry wanted to go to Rush Valley when she saw we were heading South." Ed tells you, as the train rolls along. "She's been there since we dropped her off working at some automail shop. I was thinking about swinging by to see how she's doing. Do you mind? You can go on ahead to Central if you want. I can't imagine you'd be too interested in the place anyway, it's nothing but automail freaks as far as the eye can see."

Isn't it how science work?
We raise hypothesis, see if someone made research in that direction, if there was research we check it and agree with his results or create experiment to prove previous research wrong and if there weren't any meaningful research in that direction we create experiment to verify hypothesis.

We should try to transmute a few bacteria at first to see if it is possible to create a cell.
Other approach would be checking if/how we could mend wounds and bones, as it needs to create new organic material to fill the gaps.

All experiments should be taken under observation of skilled alchemist outfitted with philosopher stone so he could help us if we would open the Gate by accident.

You're not overly interested in the automail aspect, but you didn't really get to meet Winry before when you went to Resembool. You only saw her briefly chastise Ed before you head out. The least you could do is meet her properly. You sign your sentiments over to Leah.

"We'd love to meet Winry properly this time." she tells Ed. "We didn't really get the chance before, we were in such a rush."

"Well, that's fine. I'm sure she'd like that too." Ed replies. "I don't expect us to stay long, though. But man, this'll be the first time in quite a while that we're meeting her without needing repairs. She'll be ecstatic."

The four of you relax and make small talk as the train rolls on, until you finally reach your destination. As you step off the platform, you see the sign stretching over the main street.

"Rush Valley"

The place is bustling, with people going from shop to shop, looking at all the various works on display in each. From what you can tell, it truly is almost all automail shops.

"We'll take you to the one Winry is working at, come on." Ed waves at you to follow as he heads down the street.

You both follow him, careful to not get held up by the crowd. Yet as you go, you catch movement out of the corner of your eye. Familiar movement, at that. Was that someone on a rooftop? If you hadn't seen it before, you'd have dismissed it right out. You don't make a fuss out of it, but you decide that you'll be staying alert for the duration of this stay.

As you follow the Elric brothers, you're able to see the shadowy figure dash across a few rooftops. Judging by the rate at which they stop and observe, they're clearly looking for something. You don't know if it's the same guy you met earlier, but you're sure there's a connection. For now however, you don't let it bother you too much.

You eventually reach a particular automail shop and the brothers stop. You get a look at the sign. It reads: 'Atelier Garfiel', and has a purple rose logo.

"Hey Winry? You here?" Ed calls out as he steps in. "Figured we'd swing by on our way back to see how you're doing."

You and Leah make your own way in, and take notice of Winry sitting at a workbench fiddling around with some parts. When she sees Edward, she looks legitimately surprised.

"Wait, for real? You only came to see me?" she asks. "You didn't bust up your arm and need repairs?"

"Nope, see?" Ed holds out his automail arm to display. "Not a scratch."

"Well color me surprised." Winry goes back to her work. "Looks like you boys can manage yourselves alright after all. I was worried that I'd have to start accompanying you full-time. So how did it go? Did you find the guy you were looking for?"

"Unfortunately not." Al speaks up. "He may have already skipped town. Luckily his daughter seems to be doing okay. Iskander's teacher is the one looking after her, coincidentally. In fact, we happened to meet him and Leah when we were in Dublith, and they joined us on the way back."

Winry stops working for a second and leans over in her seat to look past Al's huge figure, in order to see you and Leah.

"Oh, hey guys!" she greets you. "It's good to see you. It's a shame you had to duck out so quick last time, but Ed and Al had plenty of good things to say about you."

Winry sets her tools down and gets up, coming over to you and Leah and extending her hand. "I'm Winry Rockbell. As you know, I'm Ed's mechanic. I really want to thank you two for befriending the boys, they've been hanging around older military folks so long that they probably forgot what having friends their own age is like. And I can't always be there to keep their heads on straight, you see."

You and Leah both shake her hand, and you sign your introduction over to your companion to give on your behalf. Winry watches you make the signs with interest.

"Sign language, huh? That's neat." she mutters to herself. "I wonder if my work's fingers are dexterous enough for that. Maybe I should use that as some kind of test."

"It's nice to meet you, Winry." Leah interrupts the girl's train of thought. "This is Iskander Steiner, and my name is Leah Crawford. I interpret for him since he lost use of his voice. It's been a pleasure to be colleagues with Edward and Alphonse. Don't you worry, we'll continue to keep an eye out for them. It's no trouble at all."

"So you say." Winry sighs. "But if you were the one that had to do all the repairs, then you might think otherwise."

"I may not be a mechanic, but I've had to do my share of fixing up after as well." Leah grins. "I like to think that he wouldn't be helpless without me, but I don't feel comfortable taking the risk."

Winry smiles back at Leah, then the two girls start to giggle to themselves. You can see Ed becoming visibly annoyed.

"Alright, enough with the laughing." he barges his way in between the girls, separating them. "So you look like you're doing just fine, Winry. Enjoying your time working in the shop?"

"Yeah, I've learned quite a bit under mister Garfiel." she answers. "There's only so much Grandma could teach me by herself, and way out in Resembool isn't exactly the place to learn about automail. I'm really glad I came. And hey, even Paninya is doing well these days. She gave up pickpocketing and now she does odd jobs around town like patch up roofs."

"Well, that's good to hear." Ed says, before turning to you to explain. "Paninya was a girl who stole my State Alchemist watch that we had to chase down."

"So what about you guys?" Winry asks. "If Dublith was a bust, what are you doing next?"

"Well, we're not sure yet." Ed replies. "We've got almost nothing to go on right now. But the one thing we do know is that there are bound to be more leads in Central, we just have to find them. So that's where we're headed."

"Central? Hey, let me come with you guys." Winry demands. "I want to go see the Hughes family again."

"Are you sure?" Ed asks. "What about the shop?"

Just then, you can see a large effeminate man lean into the room from the back of the shop. He walks up next to Winry, holding his finger to his face.

"You can go on ahead if you want, Winry." the man says. "A little time off won't hurt. You go and have some fun, okay?"

"Really? Thanks, mister Garfiel!" Winry starts to head to the back of the shop. "I'll go get my things, okay? I'll be ready in a bit!"

With that settled, Garfiel moves on to working on some automail project, leaving you, Leah, and the Elric brothers to wait.

You're still a bit concerned about that figure you saw jumping across the rooftops. You decide to bring it up with the Elrics. You sign the info over to Leah, who confirms with you that she also saw the figure. She agrees that it should be addressed.

"Edward, Alphonse." she gets their attention. "While we were walking here from the station, did you see a cloaked figure jumping across the rooftops? Iskander and I saw it, and we were a bit curious."

"Huh?" Ed looks confused. "No, I didn't see anything like that. Jumping across the rooftops... I mean, I guess it could have been Paninya? Winry did say she's been fixing roofs for people around town."

Al shakes his head and confirms that he saw nothing either. However, you're sure that it couldn't have been this Pininya girl. The movements were exactly like those of the man you met in Leore. Though he said he was headed for Central. Either he's off course for some reason, or it's someone else from the far East. You're sure of it.

"Well, I don't see too much reason to worry about it either way." Ed yawns. "Not really our problem."

In a few minutes, Winry is back with all her things together. She says farewell to Garfiel, and the five of you head off for the station. You keep your eyes out again for the figure, and manage to see it at one point, doing the same thing it was earlier. This time the Elric brothers notice it too, but no one vocalizes any concern. That is, until one point when you see a cloaked figure reach out of an alleyway and snag a snack from a food stand. The figure moves fast, managing to dash out and grab the treat and return to the alleyway while the owner has his back turned. You just so happened to be looking in the right direction at the right time, it doesn't look like anyone else noticed.

While you could go traversing the rooftops after the figure like back in Leore, you decide that it's not worth your time. You'd rather keep on course and get back to Central with everybody.

Your group reaches the train station and after a brief wait, gets on a train headed North. As it goes, you all make small talk. Winry and Leah seem to have hit it off quite well, at least. From the way they're talking it just might be the first time either of them has had a girl their age to talk to. You know that's at least the case for Leah. You don't think she's ever had friends other than you and Marc until recently, in fact. She was never very personable with anyone else, always coldly giving them the minimum required amount of interaction and nothing more. She's really opened up lately compared to before.

The train ride is mostly uneventful, and you all arrive in Central.

"Well, I'm headed off to the Hughes residence." Winry says, as you all exit the station. "I'll catch up with you guys later, okay?"

You all wave her off, then Ed speaks up.

Before you try to find any more info, you figure you should let your commanding officer know what you've been doing. You sign your plan over to Leah to tell the brothers.

"We're going to see Lieutenant Colonel Mustang." she tells them. "He's our direct superior, so we should let him know what we've been up to."

"Well, he was the one that requested we find out where Tucker got off to." Ed replies. "So we'll come along with you. Just remember not to give too much away. Fuhrer's orders."

The four of you head to military headquarters, then you follow the directions you got from the Colonel to find Mustang's office. This one has a plaque with his rank clearly printed. You go inside.

"The Elric brothers, the Silent Alchemist, and his partner. Just the group I wanted to see. Take a seat." Mustang was looking over some papers as you came in. Other than the stack of papers on his desk, you can tell that the office is newly moved into. His subordinates aren't here right now, save for the Lieutenant he's rarely seen without. "I assume you're here to fill me in on what you've been doing. Tell me all about it."

Mustang's eyes are trained on the Elric brothers. It looks like he's trying to stare holes right through them.

"I'd hate to be left out of any critical information that could prove useful later." the Lieutenant Colonel stresses. "Iskander, as well. Tell me if you've found out anything of note."

>A.Let the Elrics talk, then insist you have nothing to add

>B.Talk to the Elrics first about what to or not to say

>C.Tell Mustang everything about the Tucker situation

>D.Tell Mustang you've seen some suspicious figures around

give him the skinny on tucker and let him know there's suspicious creepers apparently running all over amestris. we can let the Elrics say what they have to say, no need to tip our hand in that department yet.

You decide to go first, and to fill the Lieutenant Colonel in on what he should know, and no more. It'll be up to the Elrics whether they want to tell him the information they were told to keep secret. You sign your report to Leah.

"Sir, we were unable to find out where Tucker had gone." Leah explains. "His daughter was left in the care of a responsible couple we know and is safe, but the man himself is nowhere to be found. We feel at this time it should be known. Tucker went to Dublith in search of human chimeras. We told him that we had met them in Dublith. When he heard the possibility that they may have been the work of the military in secret, he became somewhat unstable. We think he may try to do something drastic."

"I see..." Mustang raps his fingers on the desk. "Well, that wouldn't be the first secret the government is keeping. We'll have to keep a look out."

"There is one more thing." Leah adds. "Iskander and I have been seeing strange cloaked figures running across rooftops in more than one place in Amestris. They might be up to something as well."

The Lieutenant Colonel raises an eyebrow at this, even after sitting through the revelation of human chimeras stone faced.

"Really, now?" he asks. "I do wonder what that is about. I'll have to add that to my list of concerns. Along with Scar still being out there. What about you, Elric brothers? What have you been up to? I heard you were in the hospital for a bit. What happened? And how's the research going?"

"It was nothing." Ed stares straight back at Mustang. He apparently doesn't intend to give him anything. "Not for you to worry yourself about, anyway. We haven't made any progress in our research whatsoever, unfortunately. We'll have to keep looking. Isk and Leah already filled you in on Tucker, so I guess that's all that needs to be said about that."

Mustang narrows his eyes. After staring for a bit longer and getting nothing, he turns in his chair.

"The situation in New Optain has resolved, by the way." he says. "General Hakuro is dead, and the coup is shut down. The Fuhrer stomped it right out, regardless of cost. The cost being thousands of lives. For a man who has a poor history of defending his borders, he is surprisingly brutal within them. And now this development has tension in Ishval on the rise again. Creta, Aerugo, and Drachma will surely try and take advantage of the strife. I fear I'm going to be seeing my country collapse before my very eyes. It's been proven that any attempt to take the country in another direction yourself will be met with a gruesome end. And to top it all off, at a turbulent time like this, the military is keeping dark secrets. Focusing on things that no one ought to do, let alone what they need to do. The Fuhrer has asked you to keep quiet. If he ends up leading us to ruin, you will have had a hand in it."

You've heard similar before, but this is your own CO. If he wants to oppose the Fuhrer, you'll have to make a choice.
