You are Ninth Division Captain Kusajishi Riku, and the evening had been going so nicely for once. You and your lovely wife had just finished dinner with your adoptive family before heading back towards your respective barracks when you were rudely interrupted by the arrival of three Sternritter. These three have since been joined by numerous weaker quincy, which you can only presume to be foot soldiers, and have closed the distance with Ninth Division's headquarters. It seems more like an organized attack than their previous incursions, but at the same time you can't help but notice there are no arrancar accompanying them. If this is an attack sanctioned by Aizen it's a damned sloppy one.

“Are they here under orders, or is this another group of morons acting on their own?” you wonder aloud as you race to help your Division fight off the intruders. All throughout the Seireitei the alarm has been raised, bells clanging loudly as you pass at breakneck speed.

Yoruichi shakes her head in response. “Can't tell. Seems too limited to be an all-out attack though.”

“Just big enough to be a problem.” Sure enough, the attacking force has an average spiritual power more similar to that of your own squad leaders. Were it not for the fact that Ninth Division was organized in a manner that allows even its weakest members to collectively punch well above their proverbial weight you'd expect a rout, but if you hurry you may still have a Division left by the time you can join the fight.

“Damn dirty trick though,” your wife snarls, eyes fixed once more on the terrain in front of her. “Attacking a Division to get at its Captain. No way they just happened onto your troops, they can't possibly be that incompetent.”

“They're targeting them to get to you.”

“Of course they are,” you agree immediately. “This is ultimately Aizen we're talking about.”

You push on even harder after that. If what you and Yoruichi suspect is true then it would be inexcusable to waste even a single second, and if a delay on your part causes the loss of even one of your subordinates that loss is on your shoulders. These are men and women who despite any personal misgivings about the company you keep have remained loyal to you for decades, and you've never been one not to return such a favor.

In the distance you can feel the battle begin, with each Sternritter taking a group of their own foot soldiers to attack as a separate unit.

One faces off against a squad led by Mirai, another against one led by Kai. The third targets a group of soldiers led by Rukia, who's taken up defense of the southern wall of the Ninth Division's barracks. All three Sternritter feel like they're in the neighborhood of a Captain, and worse you can tell that they're each holding back even vaster amounts of power. Absent for the moment are your arrancar friends, and it seems Rangiku is busily escorting her cousin and his friends through the bustling streets towards the Senkaimon. As for Bambietta, she's suppressing her reiatsu... but you think she's either in or on top of the home you share with your daughter. It makes a certain amount of sense, as among other things that location overlooks the brig where her fellow Sternritter are being held. She could be doing a lot of things, but moving around isn't one of them.

Good, you think to yourself as Rangiku and her group near the Senkaimon. This isn't their fight.

“There!” Yoruichi calls out, pointing to a group of black-clad figures crouching near a stone wall. “Some of mine.”

When she comes to a halt next to the Onmitsu, she's suddenly all business. “Report.”

“Three attacking groups numbering around twenty-five each, sent ahead of a much stronger commander.” The Onmitsu officer who's speaking shakes his head slightly, either in disbelief at the situation in general or his own ability to gather such intelligence and survive.

Your wife presses. “Reserves?”

“One large force of forty or so, at least that we know of.”

The man's voice is grim. Surely he must know how absurdly strong each individual quincy is compared to the average unseated shinigami. “Recommend immediate intervention.”

“Don't need to tell me,” Yoruichi nods curtly before pointing at what seems to be a member of the Onmitsu's communications unit. “Two of you stay with comms over here. File a contact report and spread what intel we have. Rest of you on me, we're hitting their reserves.”

“You thinking they're securing a lane for reinforcements?” you ask.

Yoruichi nods in agreement. “Don't wanna chance it. Would you?”

“Not with my unit or any other.”

“Good hunting then, Captain, see you soon. Where are you heading from here?”

>To gather Halibel and Starrk, coordinate a counteroffensive.
>To back up Kai. He's been in and out of the hospital lately.
>To back up Mirai. Her Bankai's only good for a few shots.

For those of you who have followed me over from /tg/, welcome back! And for those who may just be joining us, a few general points about what to expect:

Dice rolls will be called for at my discretion, typically when an action with a chance of failure is chosen. These are almost always 3d10, best of three against a set DC. If two of the 3d10 pass the DC, for example
>7,7,1 against DC 7
the roll is considered a success. If three of the 3d10 pass it's a critical success. If the best roll of the first three only has one pass it's a failure, pray that you don't have a trio of rolls with no passes.

Good work Rukia.

And I got a question. Are the Royal Guards still hanging around Seireitei?

In which case, I think they're likely targets by an Aizen led main offensive (with the objective of getting their Oken). Or they're already circumventing and are going straight for the Soul King.

“You allowed your own subordinates to die just so that you could assess my strength!?” Rukia demands, visibly shaking from anger despite her cold, controlled tone. Her opponent, a large man with a mustache protruding from under his facemask.

DO NOT BELITTLE THE SACRIFICE OF SUCH FINE SOLDIERS!” the man in the mask roars. “THEY DIED SO THAT I, THE SUPERSTAR MASK DE MASCULINE, COULD INDENTIFY YOU AS THE VILLAIN IN CHARGE OF THIS BAND OF SHINIGAMI RABBLE!

She stares at him in utter disbelief even as a tiny man brings out a bell from behind the Sternritter and rings it. The look on her face betrays the fact that she has no idea what's happening right now, and when she glances at one of her fireteam the man can only shrug.

STAR EAGLE KICK!”

With a roar the Sternritter slams his knee into Rukia's chest. It doesn't take much effort, as her chest only comes up to his waist or so anyway, and the impact knocks the wind from her lungs all at once. Her eyes widen in shock as she's sent hurtling through the wall of the T-intersection where she had her subordinates ambush the quincy.

Even as she struggles to her feet, shifting the rubble that's collapsed around her, her squad raise their own weapons and close in ranks to protect her.

“You'll have to go through us, you masked freak!” one of them shouts.

“That can be arranged!

“I see you defeated my subordinates... and left them alive. There's no greater insult than to leave the job half-done.”

The looming figure of a dark-skinned Sternritter with an almost ape-like face finally approaches Mirai from out of the shadows. The much smaller officer waves subtly at her own squad's survivors, motioning for them to withdraw. But much to her surprise he attacks not the shinigami, but one of the fallen quincy, stepping down on his neck and producing an audible crunch of shattering vertebrae.

“I must confess, I will probably enjoy hurting you after such a display.” Mirai draws her sword, holding it in a mid-height guard stance pointed straight at the Sternritter's face.

The bestial man throws a punch that sends Mirai sliding backwards from the force, though her guard holds. “Jerome Guiazbatt: also known as the Roar!”

“Mirai, Ninth Division Third Seat.”

With a slowly quickening series of rotations to build momentum, she releases her zanpakuto. “And this is Sesshoseki.”

“Someone fucked up,” you tell your wife with a frown. “If I'm gonna defend on three fronts I'll need Halibel and Starrk on board.”

“Hurry,” Yoruichi advises you, and you immediately understand why: the battle is going well enough for your side, in that the quincy foot soldiers are taking better than they can give you. But the Sternritter won't remain patient for long.

You run as quickly as you can, darting through corridors and across courtyards to reach your own home. Instead of greeting Bambietta, who glances down at you in obvious confusion you crash through the wall headfirst, not wanting to waste time with the door, and smash your way through the floor into the basement to open the portal.

“We're under attack!” you shout the second you cross over into your friends' home. “Sternritter! I don't think we can hold out long!”

“No reinforcements from the Gotei 13?” Apacci asks in obvious surprise, bolting upright and grabbing her zanpakuto from a nearby table. Apparently they'd been sitting around having some sort of after-dinner social event, because they're all here and none of them are ready to fight.

“Too spread out, Sternritter are too strong!” you tell her. “I've got faith in my Commandos to hold out until help arrives, but they're outmatched. They can't do it forever.”

“Then we have no choice,” Halibel agrees calmly, retrieving her own sword. “We shall render what assistance we can.”

“You three, go with Halibel,” Starrk orders, pointing vaguely at Apacci, Sung-Sun, and Mila Rose. “Lilynette, where's your sword?”

“Ummm,” the little arrancar mutters, glancing around the room. “I... that is... don't... know?”

Starrk's gloved hand smacks into his forehead with an audible slap. “Good lord, Lilynette. Just try not to swallow your own tongue or anything? Please? For me?”

“Hey!” she protests, kicking her partner in the face with a flying leap. “Don't be an asshole!”

“NO TIME!” you shout, snatching her from the air by her ear and tossing her out the door. “Less arguing more running!”

By the time you cross back over into the Seireitei it's already become clear how outmatched your Commandos really are against Sternritter. Rukia is in bad shape, having apparently taken a hard hit early in her fight. Kai is holding his own, but you get the distinct impression his opponent's toying with him. Or perhaps stalling for time, depending on how his ability works. Mirai's fighting well enough in Bankai, but her opponent's not dead. So that means it must be a bad matchup for her, probably someone much larger than an average person with speed to go with it.

You notice Starrk glancing in her direction, his eyes narrowed ever so slightly.

Kai pants heavily. It's almost unbelievable how strong this quincy turned out to be, even going so far as to shatter Kamitinbe's shield with a single punch. Right along the... right along... oh.

“Seems like you finally figured it out!” the creep sneers. His teeth, his hair, his gangly limbs, that bug-like visor: none of it seems natural. Like he's been put together by a child with no grasp of anatomy and then left to starve for a month or two. “That's the power of the Underbelly, to find the weakness in anything!”

“You've just been stringin' me along,” Kai grumbles. “Watin' to figure out where ta hit me, werentcha?”

“That's right, Third-Seat. Too bad you didn't figure it out sooner...”

Kai interrupts. “So if I use a technique you haven't studied yer fucked?”

“What are you implying?”

“Good shit then,” Kai grins as wild masses of red-colored reiatsu swirl around him. “Don't tell my Captain you saw this, I've been savin' it fer a special occasion... but if yer dead, you can't tell nobody anyway, can you!?”

“Bankai: Kamitinbe nu Yā Ishigaki!”

“How does it feel to be crushed by such overwhelming power!?”

Mirai stares down her enemy defiantly, despite her numerous bruises, swollen eye, and stance skewed by a clearly broken leg. The bow held low in her hand reverts back into the shape of a stone-studded kanabō, and she takes it up in her left hand to leave her right arm dangling uselessly at her side. “To heal your own throat even after taking a direct hit from Seisha Hicchū...”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_G1EJ716AlQ

“Seems like you're havin' a tough time.”

The woman snorts derisively as Starrk approaches her from around a nearby corner, almost at a stroll, with Lilynette in tow. “Were you just being lazy or dramatic?”

“Just observing.” Starrk motions for Lilynette to pass a roll of bandages and splints to Mirai, who steps aside and crashes down to the ground.

“Who's the asshole?” Guizbatt demands angrily.

Mirai ignores him, instead tending to her own wounds as she speaks. “I seem to be running out of energy, Starrk. This Sternritter is a bad matchup for me.”

“I said who's the asshole!?”

Starrk sighs dramatically, also doing his best to ignore the shouts of the Roar. “Then I guess I've got no other choice. I can't stand loudmouths... but this guy's literally been assaulting a pretty young woman in a dark alley. And that's something I can't just ignore, either.”

“Did you just try to flirt with me? Now of all times?”

“Who knows.”

To your infinite relief Kai seems to be holding his own again after releasing Bankai, and should still be alive by the time his backup arrives. Starrk on the other hand had far less ground to cover, and seems to be just about ready to swoop in and sweep Mirai off her proverbial feet... if he doesn't choke on any of his own dramatic one-liners. Which knowing him.

You give him a 50/50 chance.

Rukia's not doing too hot. Her entire squad is either dead or unconscious, and her own pure white zanpakuto has been snapped in half about a foot above the habaki. It makes you sad to see that, it's always been one of your favorite zanpakuto not because of its power but rather its appearance. Her enemy is a large man in a white coat with a stupid-looking luchador mask on, with the image of a star splashed across his eyes and nose.

SAY YOUR PRAYERS, SHINIGAMI!

The force of the blow is enough to slide you back about an inch on your feet, and just one fist requires you to block with both your forearms. If that punch had landed on Rukia, in the condition she's in, there's a chance she'd never stand up again.

AND WHO MIGHT THIS NEW CHALLENGER BE!?” the man roars. Damn, can he ever NOT shout? Or is that just how he talks?

“Ninth Division Captain, Kusajishi Riku,” you snarl, drawing Tenkotsuki from her sheath as your enemy backs off and assumes a fanciful stance. “You've been killing my soldiers. I'll give you this one chance to surrender before I kill you for it.”

“Captain,” Rukia protests from behind blood-soaked lips, “this man happily sacrificed his own subordinates. He cannot be reasoned...”

At that moment she coughs up a load of blood, probably from the results of a shattered rib penetrating one of her lungs based on how the bright-red liquid bubbles and froths.

“Calm down, Rukia,” you insist grimly. “You've suffered an injury to a lung. As soon as I kill him I can get you medical attention.”

You turn your attention back to your foe. “But I want to hear it from him.”

NONSENSE! MASK DE MASCULINE, THE SUPERSTAR, WOULD NEVER BACK DOWN IN THE FACE OF EVIL![/e]”

The man strikes a dramatic pose, tossing off his coat and revealing what must be a set of twenty-pack abs, with star-shaped pasties over his nipples and a flashy belt with a star on its wide buckle. You can hear both Tenkotsuki and Rosa retching in disgust, and you almost do the same, covering your mouth with the back of your left hand. “Okay, now I can kill him with no doubts.”

The man's next punch is incredibly powerful, and you have to match that power somehow or you're going to end up the same way Rukia did. You know one fast way to close that gap in an instant.

“Shunkō!” you roar, raising an arm to block the punch before it can connect with your cheek. With your right arm still free you swing Tenkotsuki's edge upwards at your shocked opponent, leaving a shallow gash across his stomach. His blut takes most of the lethal sharpness out of the swing, but it's still enough to give him pause.

Such a difference in only two seats?” Mask booms, looking down at you disapprovingly.
Truly I have found WICKEDNESS worthy of my strength.”

“You look great!” a nasally voice cheers from somewhere nearby, “you can win, Mask! Beat this evildoer down with the power of the SUPERSTAR!”

What the fuck is even going on anymore, you ask yourself as a fist comes flying at you: much faster this time, and no doubt with much greater force behind it as well. The blow batters through your defense like an iron-shod ram, and knocks you clean off your feet. Your ears ring as you crash through a wall, and you hear the fat little blob of a man cheer again.

The correlation is pretty obvious.

“Is that awful cheering making him more powerful?” Tenkotsuki muses, coming to the same conclusion as you.

“It would seem so,” Rosa agrees, still obviously disgusted at your opponent's conduct. “Let's hurry up and kill this fuck, I don't care if he's a quincy or not. He's not 'one of us' either way.”

“So, the cavalry's here! You ladies are a sight for sore eyes.”

Apacci glances down at Kai, who lies exhausted and slumped against a wall created by the release of his own Bankai. He's in bad shape, but she reasons it could probably be worse. His opponent is clearly Captain-class in terms of his spiritual power, and unlike Mirai Kai sometimes struggles to hit above his proverbial weight. All he can really do is delay, when it comes right down to it.

Shortly after she arrives, the arrancar is joined first by Mila Rose, then by Sung-Sun. Finally Halibel, who was in no particular hurry, steps calmly onto the scene. Unlike the others her eyes are fixed firmly not on the fallen shinigami but their assailant.

“Just relax, we've got this,” Apacci smirks, before glaring at the quincy before her. “Sure is an ugly son of a bitch.”

“Rude.” Halibel shuts her eyes in contemplation. “Do not underestimate him.”

“Starrk! Let's just do it already!” Lilynette emerges suddenly from the rubble pile she's been hiding under, bruised and dirtied but otherwise unhurt.

The Roar can't hide his surprise. “That brat's still alive?”

“Fine,” Starrk sighs. “Come here then.”

“Kay!” With a cheer and a sonido, the green-haired firecracker joins her partner at his side The two make an odd sight, an older, stubbly-chinned man towering over a girl who doesn't look a day over thirteen.

“Are you sure you wanna bring a weakling like that back into the fight? She's gonna die.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiJ-GRwTubo

Starrk rests his hand gently atop Lilynette's head. “Just shut your mouth for once and watch.”

“Kick about, Los Lobos!”

Jerome Guizbatt's eyes widen as a light surrounds the pair, and Lilynette Gingerback suddenly disappears in a powerful flash. Smoke surrounds the spot where they were standing, and the Sternritter recoils as if expecting a surprise assault. But no attack comes. Instead when the smoke clears, a lone figure is sitting patiently on an invisible platform of aligned reishi, seeming to float in the air. His clothes have changed, and a bony eyepatch covers one of the gunslinger's eyes. He rises to his feet, hands coming to rest on the handles of his pistols as they rest in their holsters.

The Roar smirks, delight at the development clear in his expression.

“You arrancar and your release forms... that gun doesn't just shoot cero, I'd imagine?”

“Wrong. Cero are all these pistols of mine shoot, because that's all they need to shoot.”

The arrancar gunman draws his weapons and takes aim. “Let's go... Starrk.”

You draw both of your swords, calling each by name and relishing in the power of their combined release. For just a moment, that is: you have something far more important to do right now. That fat little cheerleader the 'Superstar' has brought with him is an obvious liability now that his other infantry are dead, and all you need to do is exploit it quickly enough and hard enough to kill him before the Sternritter he serves realizes what happened.

To that end you use hirenkyaku to charge him, only to take a blast in the left side of your gut that fills your whole body with a searing pain. A downward glance reveals a star-shaped hole burned through your body, with a little blood dripping from the edges to stain your haori with its color.

“You had a ranged attack...” you gasp, feeling a warm, copper-tinted trickle from the corner of your mouth. “You... masked fuck!”

That should have killed you,” the man in the mask wonders aloud. “I must have made a mistake. BUT WORRY NOT, EVIL DOER! I SHALL NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE AGAIN!

He takes aim a second time with his hands in front of him, and fires a bright blast of reiatsu at you that you manage to dodge, leaving a few splatters of blood along the ground where you moved. It seems the strain of such movements damaged the seared edges, causing them to open up just a little. But as grim as it seems, your blut should be able to handle an injury like this. It's not immediately lethal at least.

QUIT DODGING SCUM!

“No!” you retort, ducking under a double-foot flying kick aimed in your direction. Thankfully his technique mostly consists of amateurish moves, like those of a 'pro' wrestler.

“Come on!” the fat man shouts again with renewed vigor. “Put her away, Mask! Put her away!”

“No way!”

Mila Rose and Sung-Sun stare in horror as the quincy easily dismantles their creation, taking each constituent part and casting it aside as easily as a child might dismantle a toy. And he does it with a smile on his face.

“Didn't that poor reaper tell you?” the Nanana sneers. “The power of The Underbelly lets me find weak spots. Wherever each of your contributions meet...”

“Is a seam,” Apacci growls, sparing a glance at Kai. He was in rough shape when they found him, and was in no condition to recap his fight with this quincy bastard, but in hindsight she wished she'd have at least asked. “Damn. We were careless.”

“This was your idea, Apacci!”

“No, I'm pretty sure it was yours Mila Rose.”

“What the fuck does it matter!?” Apacci snaps, grasping the hilt of her sword with her one remaining hand. “Both of you back the fuck off for now.”

“We're not backing down to let you hog all the glory!” the others shout in unison.

“Enough,” Halibel insists quietly, her pronouncement serving to silence the others. She calmly draws her broad sword from its sheath across her shoulders, and the space within its blade fills with a yellow light. “The three of you were weakened by that technique. I will fight in your stead.”

“Mistress Halibel,” Mila Rose begins to protest, only to be silenced by Apacci's hand.

“Of course, ma'am. If that's your order I'll follow it, even if I don't like it.”

“It's not an order,” Halibel sighs. “It's a request.”

“Then we definitely can't refuse.”

An idea crosses your mind. Maybe you were too obvious about it the first time, the big one must be expecting that sort of attack on his designated cheering section. After all he knows the most about his own powers. So there's one trick that might play into that.

With a roar of your own you fling Tenkotsuki's sheath at the Masked luchador as hard as you can, sending it spinning towards him. He raises his arm to block it, and it bounces off the bulging muscles of his arm to embed itself deeply into a wall well behind the two remaining quincy.

NICE TRY...” the Superstar begins to boom an insult at you, only to find that you've slung Kobara no Tachi's sheath at his cheering section while he had his arm raised. With a single hirenkyaku the Superstar blocks this attack as well, leading the fat little man to cheer wildly at his savior as the sheath bounces off his arm yet again. This time its spin is opposite, causing it to embed itself more or less opposite Tenkotsuki's sheath.

SUCH USLESS ATTACKS!” he laughs defiantly, “TRULY DESPERATE NOW AREN'T YOU, VILLAIN!?

“Shut your stupid luchador face!” you shout back at him, aiming a horizontal slash across his face as you charge him. The Superstar leans back casually, ducking under the swipe with a grin on his face... until your fingertips brush the edge of his mask. Your momentum rips it clean off his head, revealing his face for the first time.

He's balding on top, with obvious lines around his eyes and bushy eyebrows. Not ugly per se, but if you were to render a verdict 'as a woman' it'd be 'underwhelming'.

“Hey, if you're a luchador,” you grin cheekily, waving the mask at him, “doesn't that mean you have to forfeit now?”

It takes a second for him to realize his mask is gone, before it's replaced again: this time with a 'mask' of wrath.

YOU SHINIGAMI WHORE!” he roars, having lost any semblance of self-control he might have had left. “I DON'T CARE IF YOU'RE A VILLAIN OR NOT, I'M GONNA KILL YOU! I'LL MURDER THE SHIT OUT OF YOU FOR THIS INSULT!

“Do it, Mask!” the fat man cheers, seemingly oblivious to the context. “Murder the shit out of her! Go Mask!”

This may have been a mistake[/], you think to yourself as the Superstar replaces his mask. Your seven spectral tails wave behind you in uncertainty.

“I CAN HARDLY BELIEVE I'M USING THIS TO KILL A MERE SHINIGAMI, BUT SO BE IT! IF IT ENDS WITH YOU AS A CORPSE I CAN LIVE WITH IT!”

His appearance changes.

Behind him is a sheet of burning light, wrapped around his neck as if it were a cape with two wing-like crests at the edges of his sternum. Behind his head is a star like the one on his replacement mask. This must be his Vollständig. And his speed...

The weight of his blows exceeds your peak physical strength, and his speed finally rivals your own. You're still a little faster even with your lingering wound, but not by enough to truly use it to your advantage anymore. He dances around you, swinging in with powerful haymakers that you're hard-pressed to dodge. Full contact from one of those could be a problem for you, and he's not letting up.

WHAT'S WRONG!?” he crows.

“Nothing,” you reply, slamming your foot into his knee while he's distracted by his own attempts to turn your head and upper body into paste. He loses his balance, and a slash of Tenkotsuki and Rosa's combined blade rips a deep gouge in his chest. The look of agony on his face as his own reiatsu erupts within the channel of the wound and throws him off you is almost uncomfortably satisfying. It also gives you another chance to attack his little cheerleader.

“You can do it, Mask!” the fat man parrots again. “Murder the shit out of her!”

WILL DO, JAMES!” comes a roar that nearly stops you in your tracks. You turn in time to raise your blade, parrying a powerful double-handed axe strike that causes your knees to give out from under you. The blow cracks stone and bone, spreading pain all though your legs as muscles strain and at least one bone in your left leg cracks. Had you not been a little quicker you may have died just there.

“How are you alive!?” you demand in an agitated growl, straining against the overwhelming force. “That slash should have killed you!”

I WILL NEVER DIE SO LONG AS I HAVE ONE VOICE TO CHEER ME ON!

This may change the plan. If even a fatal blow will just heal anyway, what's the point of inflicting them like this?

Even if he isn't being attentive, he'll still notice the trick if we don't distract him.

Would we get a bonus to DC if we suggest a particular way of doing it? I'm thinking we focus on dodging. Make him think he's winning. That'll keep him distracted and keep us from getting any more broken bones.

“Starrk, when are you gonna stop gettin' beat up by this jerk!?”

Starrk lies in a crater, bruised and battered but still ready to fight. He glares up at the Sternritter, who smirks down at him confidently from on high. “Fighting a guy like him is tiring, you know. He just doesn't shut up.”

“Then we're gonna have to kill him!” Lilynette's voice counters from the pistol in his right hand. “Just use that! Most of the Division's evacuated anyway!”

“What is that girl talking about, hollow?” Jerome Guizbatt sneers. “What technique could you possibly be hiding this late in the fight?”

“It's as I told you, these pistols of mine only shoot cero...”

“And your point is!?” the quincy interrupts with a shout. “Quit talking bullshit already, if you've got another trick let's see it!”

“... you didn't let me finish. What I've been meaning to ask you is this: since when were you under the impression there was only one kind of cero?”

Jerome's expression gradually changes to one of dawning comprehension, then disbelief. And that's as far as he gets before the still-reclining arrancar raises his pistols. After a quick glance to reassure himself that Mirai isn't too close, he locks eyes with his victim.

Tenkotsuki is helping, but not in a way that grants an extra die. It's pretty much basic Shikai stuff. It's where she's cooperating independently, or when another character is cooperating closely with Riku, that they get an extra die.

When you spring the trap, for example, I intend to give you an extra die.

You glance in the direction of Starrk's fight as it reaches a climax: you can practically feel the spatial distortions from here as dozens of Gran Rey ceros collide, shearing the poor quincy apart bit by bit. Even though he seems to try his best to resist, with a roar you can hear from where you stand, it ends in an instant. His spiritual pressure suddenly drops as something cuts through both his attacks and the oncoming ceros, and the blasts subsequently obliterate his body.

Nothing remains of him.

As for Halibel's fight, that too is well in hand. The full weight of her released reiatsu is even more intense than you remember it, and unlike with Kai her opponent seems to be making no headway. It'll be over soon.

>Meanwhile
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eab7kgg8I3I
“You can't keep up with it, can you?” Halibel asks as walls of water swirl wildly around her, hissing and popping in places as if brought just to the boiling point and moving sluggishly as other areas seem to be freezing over.

A badly-battered quincy glares at her, anger obvious in the eye visible behind his shattered visor. “What have you done!?”

“By continually varying the temperature and density, I've rendered your observations meaningless.”

She holds her arm-blade high, and to Nanana's horror his limbs are quickly encased in increasingly thing coatings of reiatsu-infused ice. She watches as he struggles against her power... another meaningless effort. Were he not so desperate to kill her, she might have been able to feel some sympathy for her enemy. But this man has earned nothing from her heart but disgust, and Halibel's eyes for one rare moment betray neither remorse nor compassion.

“Goodbye, nameless quincy.”

She brings her blade down, and the roiling waters under her command surge forward in an unstoppable wave of raw power. “Cascada.”

His scream is drowned out by the onrushing tide that crushes his body, and knocks over several blocks worth of older buildings outside the walls of the Ninth Division. When she's done with him, the corpse of Halibel's enemy is hardly even recognizable as having belonged to a human.

That's actually a known side effect of fluvial transportation of a body. In addition to the crushing power of Cascada, a body that's run across the ground by a surge of water bounces off of obstructions hard enough to start tearing chunks off like sandpaper.

You take advantage of the moment where Mask is simply standing slack-jawed at the abrupt deaths of his two compatriots, backpedaling with hirenkyaku and taking aim. You hear a hasty chant in your mind before you unleash the spell.

“Sajō Sabaku!” you shout, a series of glowing chains erupting from your hands as you attempt to ensnare the distracted Sternritter. Unfortunately, 'James' as he's apparently called, alerts his master to the threat in time.

“You have to dodge it, Mask!” he shouts, pumping his fists in the air as Mask obliges him. “Dodge it! Dodge it!”

Your face splits in a wicked grin. “Hadō 63: Raikōhō!”

The blast of lightning strikes Mask dead on, as he has nowhere to run between the chains of your Sajō Sabaku, which then close in around him like so many coiling snakes. His arms are pinned at his side even as his abdominal wall regenerates from the force of the blast, and you begin chanting again. Tenkotsuki maintains your bakudō, and you can feel waves of powerful, dense reiatsu swelling all around you. The very earth beneath your feet seems to shudder at its release.

“Seeping crest of turbidity, arrogant vessel of lunacy! Seethe and deny, grow numb and flicker, disrupting sleep! Crawling queen of iron! Eternally self-destructing doll of mud! Unite! Repulse! Fill with soil and know your own powerlessness!”

The deep, nearly black violet pyre encloses Mask completely. Deeply engraved in its surface appear to be geometric patterns you've never seen before when using this spell, perhaps due to your wrath or the desparation of the situation but just as likely due to some unknown circumstance.

But those details hardly matter.

“HADŌ 90: KUROHITSUGI!”

Reality warps and screams under the force exerted by Kurohitsugi. Even your own spell is destroyed utterly within it, but as James continues to cheer you have no doubt that Mask survived. Even this was no more than a setback. A painful, likely infuriating setback.

>Follow up, continue to test the limits of Mask's regeneration until he starts to run low on reiatsu.
>Attack James during this moment of weakness, you may never have a better chance to strike him down.
>Complete the long game with Tenkotsuki. It may be a bit harder to pull off, but it'll end this once and for all.

With a wild charge you rush James, beheading him with a single stroke of Tenkotsuki's blade that causes the two ends of his severed neck to literally explode as his blood ignites.

JAMES! KEEP IT UP YOU BASTARD!

“You can do it, Mask!” the severed head cheers, seemingly unfazed as James's body attempts to re-mount it. “Go, Superstar!”

You were counting on this reaction, and he's played straight into your hand.

“Tenkotsuki,” you tell your sword. “Get ready to do it on my mark, you may have less than a second to work with. That okay?”

“Who do you believe you are working with, my dear Riku?”

“That's good,” you nod, speaking aloud as Mask rushes you... and you raise your energy in your special form of shunkō. The collision sends you flying through the air uncontrollably, but the transfer of your ability is near instantaneous. Your own body regains its sensation and you correct your course, aiming straight for James while the Superstar is still trying to figure out how you robbed him of all his physical sensation. Pain floods your body as you begin to feel the damage that blow did to you, muscles strain and tear, but you keep going.

“NOW!” you roar to Tenkotsuki, just before your foot makes contact with James's newly reattached head. It nearly rips right off, and several vertebrae do shatter from the force, but most of it transfers the way you intended. James is lifted from the ground and sent sprawling, right past where you embedded your two sheaths in the walls.

There's a short incantation in your head.

“My right hand is the stone that bridges worlds, my left hand is the blade binding reality. The black-haired shepherd is hung from a chair. Stratus clouds gather, and I strike down the Ibis.”

“Keikaigi!” you shout, and with almost impossible speed Tenkotsuki connects the two sheaths and draws open a void between dimensions running between them large enough for James to pass through.

“Thank God!” he shouts, to your puzzlement, before the garganta snaps shut.

Mask stops dead in his tracks.

“James?” he asks, his voice momentarily faltering. “WHAT DID YOU DO!?

“I knocked him through into the dangai,” you smirk. “Who knows when or where he'll reemerge, but regardless of that you can't hear him now, can you? You're all by yourself, after all that setup. And now I'm going to kill you.”

“MEN!” he tries and fails to command his fallen quincy footsoldiers. “MEN! GET UP AND CHEER! I COMMAND YOU! I AM A STERNRITTER, AND I COMMAND YOU TO CHEER FOR ME!”

It's no use,” you hiss. “You sacrificed them, remember? They can't help you now, because you chose to send them needlessly to their deaths. You, the commander responsible for ensuring they either lived or at very least died for good reason. You have only yourself to blame for your fate.

He searches around frantically. His fellow Sternritter are dead. Their soldiers have mostly died with them. His fat little cheerleader is lost in the dangai, far beyond being able to help him now. For once it's a fair fight between him and you, no bullshit regeneration, no invincibility, no powers bequeathed upon him by sycophants or subordinates. He's thrown away every advantage he had, betrayed the sacred bonds of trust... and he's terrified.

I don't care if you're a quincy. I don't care if you've hurt me. But for that sin alone you've earned a villan's death.”

His eyes widen in horror. The self-proclaimed masked hero takes an instinctive step back as you loom above him, the majesty of your reishi tails and overpowering reiatsu cowing him despite his advantage in size. For all his muscles, for all his delusions of righteousness, he has fallen to this point.

You take a moment to ponder the question. Perhaps you should show mercy despite how vile and absolutely untrustworthy this man is. Maybe he's not worth killing. Maybe...

No. You have made all of the decisions to get to this point, and now it is time for you to reap what you have sown..”

And with that pronouncement, you slice his head cleanly off his shoulders. You retrieve your sheaths and return your blades to them, and tuck them into your sash right where they should be.

You pull off your haori and let it hang about your waist, examining the state of your wounds and your clothing. There's quite a bit of blood caked to your sōshiraiken uniform, but there's not much you can do about that short of taking it off. It feels so uncomfortable that you actually take that measure, like peeling off a giant scab, leaving the black garment on the ground. Or at least what's left of it.

“How are you holding up, Kuchiki?” you ask, kneeling over your Commando.

She blinks a few times, struggling to hold herself up to speak to you. “I have been better, ma'am. How are Mirai and Nikko?”

“They're fine,” you assure her. “Halibel and Starrk backed them up. Losses were stiff, but nothing we haven't endured before. Let's just get you put back together.”

“You're wounded, Captain,” she observes, ignoring the fact that one of her lungs has collapsed.

“I'll be fine,” you continue, rather annoyed at her continually fussing over everything but her own wounds.

From behind, you feel the horrible sensation of a hand being thrust through your open wound, with caramel-brown fingertips protruding from your stomach. You can hear Rukia gasp in shock, which becomes a coughing fit.

“Figured it'd be over quicker this way,” Yoruichi admits rather sheepishly as she withdraws her hand from your body. Relief washes through you as the wound and the surrounding tissue go blissfully numb. “I gave you a partial dose. You'd be pissed if you passed out now, am I wrong?”

“No, you're not wrong,” you admit, turning to face your wife with a peck on her cheek. “How'd it go?”

“Easy pickings,” she shrugs. “Three captives, the rest fought to the death. I felt your fight and figured you could use a hand.”

“Not one through my gut,” you chuckle. “We really need to work on your bedside manner.”

“I could have brought Unohana.”

You shudder involuntarily. “You were excellent, my lovely and charming wife,” you tell her in a mechanical tone. “Your gentle nursing would get me through any illness, or physical injury, with minimal mental and emotional strain.”

“Better!”

Yoruichi kneels by Rukia. “Can you swallow this?”

“Is it medicine?” your Commando asks. Yoruichi nods, and she takes the pill. Though she struggles, Rukia manages to swallow it. Her eyes immediately grow unfocused, and her body relaxes.

“She needs to be moved,” Yoruichi declares, looking you up and down, “and you're not in a condition to help her. I'll carry her.”

“Thanks,” you nod. “Really, you've made a huge difference even just doing this for me.”

“Sorry I couldn't get here sooner,” she replies somberly.

The return trip to your barracks' courtyard is a short one, but not exactly a pleasant one. As you're in no position to carry the wounded back you instead focus on slowly regenerating your own body, a task made somewhat more difficult thanks to the fact that your most severe wound has been seared shut. A radio call however ensures that a recovery team is able to pick up the two survivors of Rukia's ten-man squad and bring them in for medical attention. But you're at least able to arrive before your Division under your own power, urging a medic to get to work re-inflating and healing Rukia's collapsed lung. You wave them off when they ask after your own wound, insisting that a wash, a change of uniform, and five more minutes or so is all you really need.

“You killed him,” Bambietta's voice greets you from behind as you wash the last of the caked blood away from the skin around your belly wound. “You didn't need to do that.”

You don't even bother to turn around, you left the doors open knowing she's feel the need to speak with you like this. “I did kill him, yes. And I don't regret it either.”

“You could have taken him prisoner.”

“He showed no sign of recognizing the wrong he had committed,” you explain, drawing a careful distinction between Bambietta's case and Mask's. “And he was given a chance to surrender, but instead he chose to fight. The three of us agreed that should be his fate, given everything he had done.”

“Actually, there may be something of a complication,” Tenkotsuki speaks up. “You know how we dealt with that strange James fellow, my dear?”

“Yeah, what about it?” Bambietta almost seems like she's about to say something, but realizes that you're talking to your own soul again and shakes her head.

“Well, it is entirely possible that the poor little man was utterly insane,” your zanpakuto explains, “even more so than the other quincy his own apparent age. As if he were only capable of repeating the same stock phrases over and over again. I know that you must have suspected the same during our fight wih him.”

You frown. “What are you getting at, Tenko?”

“Not even I can predict when and where the man called James will exit the Dangai. It could be a thousand years from now...”

“Or a thousand years ago?” you realize aloud, nearly dropping the bandages you've been busily wrapping around your barely-healed abdominal wound, just to ensure it doesn't bleed onto your clothes again. “Tenkotsuki, do you realize what you're saying?”

“This may not be the first time we have fought Mask and James, and it may not be the last. The reason James expressed satisfaction at being sent through the Dangai may well be that he was happy to finally see Mask defeated once more.”

“And so you think James was subtly trying to get Mask killed the whole time?” you press, honestly quite intrigued at the implication. “By cheering a specific way, to elicit certain responses and discourage others?”

“Holy shit, she might actually be right!” Bambietta exclaims, her eyes wide in dawning comprehension. “That little fucker James was always kinda odd, and Mask was always cagey about where he picked him up. But when we tried to get him really drunk one time, kinda like a gamble to see if maybe he'd be a depressed drunk and it'd get him to shut the fuck up, he mentioned he ran across James in the street and the guy 'just started cheering'. That's how he said it happened. Then James cheered some and he did a keg stand.”

“That last bit was kind of an unnecessary detail,” you observe, “but out of curiosity how far did he get before he had to stop?”

“Three.”

That's actually kind of impressive, and you let out a low, approving whistle. “So anyway, I guess that whole thing was my fault, in a weird, roundabout way?”

Bambietta shrugs. “If your sword's right, and I think she might be then it's what that mad little bastard wanted. I'm just kinda sad you couldn't figure out a way to put him out of his misery.”

“Maybe next time.”

With that you pull your spare haori back on and fasten it with your signature blue sash, and head out to review your troops with a somewhat cleared conscience.

First you check on your wounded. There are many soldiers receiving medical treatment, some of which will require the touch of a more skilled healer from the Fourth Division, but once more it's nothing compared to the worst days of the Great War. Three officers have their own cordoned-off section: these are Rukia, Mirai, and Kai, and you work your way over to see them personally.

“At ease!” you insist quietly as Kai and Mirai both struggle to sit up. “You two deserve at least a month off each, but somehow I'm afraid that's probably not likely to happen.”

“Not sure what I'd do with a whole month,” Kai admits, giving up on sitting up at all. “I trust we've got you to thank fer the backup?”

You nod. “Yup. I see it did some good.”

“Neither one of us was prepared for such raw power,” Mirai admits in a low tone, a trace of sullenness you're not used to from her. “Were it not for Coyote I would have been killed. He was outstanding.”

Starrk shifts uneasily where he stands guard over the wounded officers, seemingly unsure what to do with the praise. “I had to release.”

“I know, I felt that!” you exclaim. “Hell of an attack, I always figured you were holding something back whenever we sparred! And Tia, you had that guy totally under control!”

“Water has no weak point,” she observes. “It can crash and it can flow.”

“You stole that from a movie.”

Halibel shrugs off your accusation with a faint grin. “It was a good movie.”

Now, your first order of business should be to...

“I'm sorry this happened to all of you,” you address the other wounded, along with your Commandos. “Those quincy no doubt attacked our Division in an attempt to get at me, and my close personal allies. It's not down to chance that the Fourth Division hasn't been attacked, or the Thirteenth Division, or any other Division. It isn't fair to you, to have your lives put at risk because of the enemies I've made... and yet your performance today was everything I could have asked you for and more. You worked as a team, far better than your attackers did, and despite their individual strength you prevailed.”

“I'm proud of your performance today, from the newest unranked rookie right up to my Commandos. Each and every...”

You're interrupted by a vibration in your sash, where you keep your denreishinki. Since the only person in the field right now who has your number is Rangiku, that can't be a good thing.

You pick up to hear shouting and the roar of some kind of rapid-firing weapon. It sounds like an old Gatling gun to your ears, like the ones you heard in use back during the Boshin war, but each individual report is much louder. You actually have to hold the phone out away from your ear a little.

Riku, we're pinned down in the Living world!” Rangiku shouts. “We've made contact with quincy, at least four must be Sternritter by their uniforms!

There's a sharp cry from someone nearby, and Rangik shouts at them. “I said keep your head down, carrot-top! What part of DOWN do you not understand!?

Ichigo tries to protest, but Rangiku just shouts back something about “trench warfare”.

“Call Gin!” you reply, raising your voice to be heard above the gunfire. “We'll be there with backup in thirty seconds!”

You spin to face Halibel and Starrk, who have by now realized the severity of the situation. “You two stay here, keep watch on things while we're gone. I've gotta go help Rangiku and her group out of a tight spot.”

Without waiting for a response you turn to leave, marching down the aisle of wounded shinigami like a white-clad storm rolling through. “You fought well, now leave the rest to your Captain.”

The door pops free of its hinges, and you motion to your wife who's been waiting outside for you. “What's happened?”

“It's Rangiku. Open a garganta to Karakura town, I'm getting Bambi.”

“I... okay, I guess you know what you're doing,” Yoruichi sighs, clearly thinking better than to question your judgment in bringing Bambietta with you to fight her former comrades. She probably figures you've thought this through more than you let on, but she does have a tendency to give you too much credit sometimes. This just feels like the way you need to do it: and that's the extent of your reasoning.

Hirenkyaku drops you right next to Bambi, where she sits calmly atop your roof. “Hey, what's going...”

“No time to explain,” you insist, hefting her over your shoulder and returning to Yoruichi's side in a single step. “Just get in the garganta.”

“Okay.”

When you ultimately find where Rangiku and the others have bunkered down, the situation doesn't look good.

“Damn it!” Bambietta hisses, carefully observing the four Sternritter from a distance as one peppers away at Rangiku's Bankai with a multi-barreled machine gun. “Of all the Sternritter still out there of course it had to be these assholes!”

“Who are we dealing with here?” you ask, realizing that the situation you're witnessing is pretty much a stalemate between Byakkokiri's reiatsu-scattering properties and the overwhelming amount of incoming fire. You can probably take the time to gather your bearings.

“The one with the firepower is BG9, the Karma,” Bambietta tells you, biting gently at her left thumbnail. “I don't know what his actual ability is, I just know he's a heartless fuck with a fetish for big guns and explosives. Also he might be a robot.”

“Just gonna take your word on that and move on. How about the woman with the messed-up hair?” Yoruichi presses, noticing the two-toned hair on the only woman in the group. “What's her story?”

“Berenice, the Question. She's one of our weakest fighters, but her ability's pretty obvious. A real pain in the ass, she can induce crippling doubt in an enemy's mind.”

“And the big guy?”

“Driscoll Berci, the Overkill. He was a real psychopath even before he gained the power to get stronger by killing. Now that's all he seems to care about.”

“And the barefoot kid?” you ask. “He looks like the most normal of the four from here.”

“Prepare to be surprised. He's a weird fuck, with the name of The Wind. I don't know how his power works, but he brags about how he can't be hit. And so far as I know it's not just a boast.”

A psycho-killer, a headcase who turns you into a headcase too, a kid who thinks he can't be hit, and a guy who Bambi thinks may be some kind of Terminator-style robot. And not the kind that ends up helping you either.

“As crazy as it sounds I want to talk to them first,” Bambi admits quietly. “I don't want any more of my people to die today if it can be avoided.”

>We'll go together. If shit goes south we'll engage at the same time.

As much as I am to loathe, there is a certain strategy behind these moves. Aizen aims to keep the 9th over-encumbered and bloated with prisoners while he directs his forces elsewhere. We seriously need to get the other divisions to help pitch in.

>You go ahead. See what you can do when we're not in plain sight.
Feels like the opposing Sternritter wouldn't ease their guard if a Shinigami is also present. And it'd be 3 vs 4 right on the onset if talks break down.

“I understand,” you nod quietly. “But we go together. If things go south I want to be able to coordinate our response as a group.”

“Understood. Just... try not to make too much eye contact, okay? Some of them don't like that.”

“Great,” Yoruichi mutters mutinously. “Sound like a real stand-up bunch.”

Following Bambi's lead, you make your way over to the Sternritter where they've taken a position above Karakura town. Extending your senses you can tell that you're not the only ones preparing to respond to the threat, but if Bambi plays her cards right maybe there won't be another fight to the death.

“Hey!” Berenice calls out, barely audible over the gunfire. “Hey, BG9! Cut it the fuck out, check your fire already!”

The possible robot stops firing, letting his rotary cannon spin down. “Incorrect use of terminology. Check fire is only ordered in the event of an unsafe shooting condition, usually either an error in target identification or proximity of friendly forces.”

“Shut up with the details,” Berci grumbles angrily. “Nobody gives a shit.”

“So I take it those three morons sprung you!” Berenice continues jovially. “Looks like you're missin' something there though, you might wanna get that looked at when we get back to Silbern.”

“It's rude to speak ill of the dead,” Nianzol observes, and when he speaks you can see that not only will his eyes apparently not stay focused he may actually have two tongues. “One of those is the Ninth Division Captain. If she's here, they must have failed.”

“They were serious about targeting that Captain first?” BG9 asks, cocking his head at Nianzol. “I assumed that was a joke!”

“Well they're dead,” Berci adds, “so clearly they were.”

“So what are you actually doing here with her!?” Berenice demands. “Why would you bring the White Jackal here!?”

“The White Jackal?” you ask, raising an eyebrow. “That's a new one. I assume the white part is for my haori and the jackal part refers to death?”

“Have you lost your mind, Explode?” BG9 presses.

Bambietta shakes her head sternly. “No, far from it. I regained my sanity, with some help from a shinigami of all people. We don't have to serve Aizen!”

“Aizen!” Berci snorts. “Bastard has us serving under arrancar! Serving below a filthy hollow!”

“I know that!” Bambietta snaps. “But not all arrancar are like that, just like not all shinigami are shitters, and not all quincy are saints!”

“Careful, Explode,” BG9 cautions, turning an impassive faceplate towards you. From one of its several vertical slits you see a single glowing eye lock its malevolent gaze with your own. “That sounds like the talk of a traitor.”

“It sounds like the talk of a reasonable human,” Bambietta counters. “Not like you'd have any experience with either of those things.”

“It's funny because you're a robot,” Nianzol clarifies, rolling his eyes... a little more than he seems to do normally.

“Statement cross-analyzed with other examples of humor. Match not found. Verdict: not funny.”

Nianzol laughs, and you really wish he'd stop. “Man, you crack me up with that shit!”

“Statement incongruous. What shit?”

Bambietta sighs dramatically, gathering an orb of light in her left hand. “I see we're gonna have to do this the hard way. I'm sorry, but if you won't hear sense I hope I can beat it into your thick heads!”

She sets off the blast between the four Sternritter, and the battle begins.

Okay, tag-teaming with Yoruichi seems to win the day. Here's how the next vote will work: select two of the following four for your vote, and the two Sternritter with the most votes will be the ones you focus on. You will then have to roll to see how successful you are in pulling this off: any reasonable suggestions for how to do so may lower the eventual DC, or even help stack up other matchups in a way you want.

>The Question
>The Karma
Think Rangiku would do better against overkill, and Bambi's explosives should hard-counter any avoidance, including some kinds of permanent intangibility
>>
>>681827
I was thinking Rangiku would be best against The Wind because she could just get him to breathe in metal dust. You can't deflect metal dust shredding your lungs after all.
>>
>>681795
>The Karma
>The Wind
>>
>>681795
>The Overkill
>The Question
First we need to deal with the Overkill or at least put his kill-streak on ice. We have plenty of Kido binding spells that enables us to lock him down unless his killstreak mechanic also includes spellbreaking. Rangiku can stay on the Karma. Since I reckon the Karma's mechanic revolves around damage reflection if he's attacked. So maintain a defensive playstyle until support can come to lock the Karma down with CC.
As for the Question, We IC know divine truths that Question has no knowledge of so it's possible for us to turn the table against her.
As for the Wind. He he loves to have a jolly fun time, so Yoruichi would humor him in the sense that Lightining is faster than wind.
>>
>Calling it, tallying. expect a vote soon
>>
>>681834
With the spacial manipulations involved, I don't think it will manage to get into his lungs at all in the first place. It will likely just swirl around his body.
He's immune to any attack he's seen once, after all, and Rangiku must've used her zanpakuto prior to us coming.
>>
We can be invisible.
>>
Okay, you'll be attempting to isolate The Question and The Karma from the group. It's actually a pretty good selection on your part, and attacking with #62: Hyapporankan as a wide-area attack should be worth a reduced DC.

3d10, moderate DC of 6. A critical or passing at an 8 may be good fore a slightly better result.

You decide that working together with Yoruichi, you should be able to take down two Sternritter fairly easily. Taking advantage of the distraction caused by Bambietta's explosion you produce an iron rod in your hand, and hurl it at the group.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F2idUuiRmCk

“Bakudō #62: Hyapporankan!”

The rod duplicates itself, creating a veritable cloud of steel that rains down on the group. Three Sternritter scatter, The Wind towards Rangiku and The Overkill towards Bambietta. BG9 however takes an iron rod to the chest, and it sends him hurtling towards the earth. The Question quickly joins him with a hirenkyaku, yanking the rod out of his chest before you can follow up on it properly, but you've succeeded in separating the four in exactly the way you wanted.

Yoruichi's fist slams into the ground where BG9 had been, shattering concrete and forcing the robot and his companion to fall back towards a nearby park that's empty of people. It's only then that she draws her swords from their shared sheath at the small of her back.

“Now then,” she purrs, “let's see what you can do, Mister Roboto!”

BG9 raises his minigun, aiming a burst at Yoruichi where she reappears after a shunpō and mowing down the afterimage she left for him along with several trees that burst behind her. If you were him you'd be dismayed at what happens next, as your wife cleaves off the ends of his weapon's multiple barrels with one of her butterfly swords. But she's not done there. Two more slashes cut the barrels once more further down the barrels, and then right through its action rendering it useless.

“Domo arigato!” she smiles as she turns in place, ducking under BG9's retaliatory punch and kicking him in the ribs.

“Prohibit, Tenkotsuki!” you call as you slice through the hand crossbow that Berenice produces to try and shoot Yoruichi while she's busy with her mechanical diversion. Needless to say you don't let her do so.

“Ah, so you've decided to grace me with your presence, Captain!” she shrieks. “You're exactly the one I wanted so badly to kill!”

“Sorry, but I don't intend to die to the likes of you,” you retort. “I'm too busy for one thing. A sudden case of death would really hurt my workflow, you know?”

“And what would your dearly departed parents think about your work?” she crows. “Do you think they'd be proud that you took over the job of the man who killed them!? Do you think your dear mother would be happy to see you working so close with the woman who murdered you? With the damned shinigami outfit you're wearing!?”

What she's saying... it's striking uncomfortably close to home. Is it because all this time you've doubted that this is really the right thing to do? Does joining with the Gotei 13 make you a hypocrite? Are you betraying the memory of your parents who gave their lives to protect you and the rest of the quincy culture? And what about Yoruichi? Her oldest friend certainly still sees you as a threat. Does she really love you, or is she just trying to keep you under surveillance? Has she been twisting you to focus on problems that threaten her own people, for her own selfish ends? Is she just using you?

You feel your own power faltering as a sharp blade penetrates between your ribs, and you turn away instinctively in time to avoid a fatal blow. You can't hear Tenkotsuki calling out to you. Has she abandoned you? After all this time, has she simply been disgusted by your hypocrisy?

Your pulse races, each heartbeat echoing throughout your body and mind like a bass drum being struck. It's hard to even think... sound based attack... crippling self doubt... THINK, RIKU!

I'd suggest pulling a Mask and smash our eardrums. If her power's sound based then she can't do shit if we can't hear her.

And unless our parents were die hard fanatics they'd be happy that we're happy, even though we're not really Rosa anymore.
>>
To reduce the DC: trust your instincts and what you have done before. To quote Vagrant Story, if there is no foothold in the past, you cannot walk towards the future.

Riku has trusted her judgement for centuries so far. Even if the Riku in this moment has doubts, she has considered everything thus far to be worth fighting or even dying for.

Take a page out of her nephew's book; cast aside her doubts and step forward. To linger and question everything she has done thus far is death, and Riku is a survivor.
>>
>>682138
So late anon...
>>
>>682117
Pull a yami and keep switching up our mental state with rosa and tekotsuki
>>
>>682117
Yes they would. Because what parent would not feel satisfied at seeing their child happy?
>>
>Is it because all this time you've doubted that this is really the right thing to do?

If Riku's resolve was that weak, she would never have achieved bankai.

>Does joining with the Gotei 13 make you a hypocrite?

Riku is not a Quincy, not anymore, not really. She's her own person, with some baggage from the past. And when she joined she did so out of survival and to get to a better life.

If Riku ever owed the Quincy anything, Rosa paid that debt with her death.

>Are you betraying the memory of your parents who gave their lives to protect you and the rest of the quincy culture?

Aizen's Quincy are not the culture they'd give their lives to protect. But Ichigo and Uryu? The Ishidas? Those are the cultures that are meant to be passed on; these are the people who remember what Rosa truly stood for.

>And what about Yoruichi? Her oldest friend certainly still sees you as a threat. Does she really love you, or is she just trying to keep you under surveillance?

No way Yoruichi could have kept that kind of agenda hidden this long; by this point they've know each other too long. They're not really complete without the other.

>Has she been twisting you to focus on problems that threaten her own people, for her own selfish ends? Is she just using you?

Isn't everyone?

Isn't the Question trying to do just that right now?

>You can't hear Tenkotsuki calling out to you. Has she abandoned you? After all this time, has she simply been disgusted by your hypocrisy?

If she had, RIku would be dead; that fox is the only thing keeping their triad alive and whole. RIku is still alive, so Tenkotsuki must still have her back.

So just thinking happy thoughts against an enemy who induces doubt rather than simply amplifying it isn't going to work. There are however two suggestions that would reduce the DC to an 8, which you would pass. Pick one and only one:

>Puncture eardrums
>Tap out for Rosa

Pick wisely. You have ten minutes.
>>
>>682117

Riku, pop her own eardrums and deny future attacks. Rely on reiatsu sensing to guide her.

Or at least find some way to muffle her own senses. Maybe she can twist a that concealment kido spell around so that rather than keep others from hearing Riku, it keeps RIku from hearing others?

Fighting through that disability will be a pain, but it could prevent future attacks.
>>

>Puncture eardrums
We have other ways to communicate and sense danger. Switching out for Rosa only induces further doubt in the soul.

So you're saying the Question's questions only work if there's someone to receive it and provide an answer. She can't ask away if there's no one but herself to answer the question if she's the only one to receive it.

Sound based, you think to yourself grasping onto that sole observation like a lifeline amid a sea of induced self-doubt. Her abilities require you to hear her, huh? Well, that's easy enough to solve.

You sheath your sword, and hold out your hands, gathering reiatsu in your palms.

“What the hell are you playing at?” Berenice asks curiously before you slam your palms down over your ears, forcing the reiatsu deep into your own ears and rupturing your eardrums. The loudest blast sine the Passchendale is the last thing you hear before a warm trickle escapes your ears, and your mind gradually clears.

Berenice shouts something at you, but you can only see her lips moving. It's like watching a silent film, but the soundtrack is nothing but tinnitus. The ringing is all you can hear.

Gotcha, bitch!' you hiss. “Can't play twenty questions with a fucking deaf woman, can you? Or did you seriously think I wouldn't jump to such extremes

Berenice shouts again, and you silently cross blades with her. All you can hear now are the voices that really matter.

“We may disagree at times, my dear Riku, but you shall always have my support. I know that in your heart you know that, and so I forgive the doubts that clouded your mind just now. They were not your own... now, my dear, it is time to show this foul woman your resolve and your pride.”

“The only reason I can forgive that catty woman of yours is because she cares about you. I don't even think the sex matters... she just wants you to be happy, like our parents did. Doubting yourself's not a sin or anything, just don't fucking do it over that shit. Got it?”

“I am not Rosa Rosette,” you declare in a low growl, kicking Berenice in the gut and driving her off of you. You have just enough time to release Kobara no Tachi before meeting her blade again... and slicing straight through it in a burst of reiatsu. “I have a loving relationship with my wife. I've raised two children who've made me desperately proud. I have a family that took me as their own, dear friends and loyal subordinates who will always have my back, and parents who died so that I could have a chance to forge my own future.”

“I'm not the one who should be questioning my life,” you accuse Berenice. “The one who should really be asking the questions is you. What do you have in your life worth fighting for? What have you done that was worth doing? Would you be able to look at your family and tell them that you're happy with your life?”

Berenice screams in the silence. If that scream has words hidden in it you can't hear them now, but somehow you doubt it. The deranged look in her eyes makes you think that perhaps you may have fundamentally broken her, unhinged her at a basic level. She grasps the sides of her head with her hands, panting heavily and muttering something to herself, then looks up at you with eyes full of so many emotions.

Fear, disgust, hatred, desperation... it's hard to say without knowing what she's said which of those feelings she's experiencing most at this moment.

>Attack her. Overwhelm her with pure offensive power until she can no longer lift so much as a finger against you.

You talk and talk, you ask and ask. Yet, you've never looked inwards. The reason why you've been defeated here is you've never asked yourself these questions. And thus you've never grown up. You're a Quincy aren't you? You're the creme de la crop of your race yet you don't know what it means to be a Quincy? Why don't you take some time off, maybe find a quiet place to reflect upon yourself these questions so you can find the answers to those questions for yourself. If you need safety from Aizen's cruelty. I can provide you a safe and quiet place for your need of self-reflection.

We could punch her in the voicebox and keep her from using her ability, maybe. If we do keep her alive we don't want her to sow dissent in the ranks and especially in whoever is guarding her.

You round on the Sternritter, forcing her to backpedal to avoid your assault of stabs and slashes by gaining some distance and crashing through the trunk of a tree in the process. And that's when you put your plan into action.

“Rikujōkōrō!”

The six rods of light slam into Berenice's midsection, causing her to shout in fury that only falls on your deaf ears, her objections going totally unheard. Then you draw a pair of knives from your haori, courtesy of your darling wife's insistence that you remain so armed just for the rare cases where such precautions become useful, and hurl the blades at her neck.

The Sternritter's eyes go wide as she breaks the spell, but not in time. The two small blades lodge in her throat, one just above her Adam's apple and the other about two finger-lengths below it. She glances down in concern, pulling each out in turn. She was clearly expecting death, but is even more shocked to find the true purpose behind your attack.

“Every Onmitsu is taught the anatomy of the neck,” you explain, unable to hear your own words but watching as Berenice struggles to voice her own outrage. “The locations of the major arteries, veins, and nerves. What I targeted were the two branches of your recurrent laryngeal nerve, which control the function of your vocal cords. For most people it'd be hard to hit such small, specific targets without accidentally hitting the subclavian artery... but I was trained better than that. You can thank Yoruichi for it later.”

With what you know in your mind to be a soundless scream of fury the Sternritter charges you, only to take a hard punch to the solar plexus that doubles her over.

You're getting a second chance, whether you want one or not,” you hiss. “So go to sleep.”

Glancing about, you try and confirm the status of your companions. Rangiku is struggling against the Wind, who seems to have lived up to his reputation. Berci on the other hand has been killed already by an explosion in the face that seems to have shattered his skull from the inside, and Bambietta is racing to join your daughter. Ichigo seems to be struggling to keep pace, having hit the time limit on his hollowfication and leaving Rangiku to mostly defend where she can. Meanwhile your wife is fighting BG9 alone, dodging volleys of missiles. It seems that after releasing his Vollständig the robot is able to keep up with your wife's movements, to the point that she's about to release Raijūsenkō. You have no idea if she's figured out the right weapon for the job, either.

Gin's still the wild card. You feel that if he shows up in time he could end the fight with the Wind in an instant using his own Bankai, but Yoruichi's faring much better on her own so far than the others against this unusual power the quincy boy seems to have. If Gin's delayed, they'll need you there more.

“No,” Rosa replies when you ask if you can split her off and have her snipe the Wind from here. “From what I've deduced he can counter any technique he has seen. I either have to kill him on the spot or not at all, but tryin' to do it nonlethally is a waste of time.”

Protesting won't do any good when Rosa gets like this, and if you're being totally honest she has a point. So instead you focus on the problem at hand, and back up your wife against BG9.

She says something to you, but you shake your head and tap at your ear with one finger. She visibly sighs, and points at BG9. The robot, clad in the vestments of his Vollständig, motions to where his ears would be, then lightly taps his wrist as if indicating a watch. Is he giving you time to heal your eardrums? You glance at Yoruichi, and she nods.

What an odd one, but you can't complain.

You put your hands over your ears and begin focusing more intently on healing your burst eardrums, and it takes only a second or two.

“You can hear me again?” Yoruichi asks, and you smile.

“And loving it.”

BG9 clears his throat, or at least makes a noise like he's doing so. “Are you functional again?”

“I am,” you confirm.

“Then perhaps you could answer a question that has been on my mind: how is it that you came to turn your back on your own people?”

“You're not my people,” you explain calmly. “My duty is to living humans, not to you quincy who hid in the shadows for a thousands years.”

“I see...”

In the distance you watch as the Wind is struck by an arrow from an unexpected fighter: Kurosaki Masaki has fired a single shot from her shortbow, standing between her son and the older Sternritter. While The Wind is distracted, a sword slices through his torso.

“Kamishini no Yari.”

In an instant he's been cut through, a cloud of blood marking the second hit he's suffered in as many seconds. “You're a fool, Ichimaru! You should've killed me when you had the chance!”

“You shouldn't wag your tongues so freely, Nianzol,” your son chides the quincy, “and you definitely shouldn't presume that you know my abilities just because you've seen 'em once. I'll give you this once chance.”

“I refuse! Why should I give up when I hold the advantage!” The Wind forms a sacred bolt in his hand, aiming as if to fire at Rangiku as she tries to protect herself, Ichigo, and his family and friends with Byakkokiri.

But Gin has other plans, placing a hand against Nianzol's back.

“Kill him, Kamishini no Yari.”

>>683253
Aww, he had the kill switch ready and he still gave Nianzol a chance to step down

Guess it can't be helped.

>>
>>683253
“And you feel no regret over this?” BG9 asks you, turning away from his ally as Gin's bankai destroys most of the quincy's torso in an instant.

“Do you?”

BG9 shakes his head. “I cannot feel such useless things. I am a being of logic, not of sentiment.”

“And that's your greatest failing,” Yoruichi mutters. “Purr, Raijūsenkō!”

>That's enough. There's no reason to brutalize a lone quincy who has no chance of victory.
>Finish him quickly. It's clear that BG9 has no intention of cooperating.

SSQ Gin is a little more active in protecting the things he cares about, and The Wind had to actually be taken out by a Royal Guard in canon. Plus, Gin wasn't exactly angry enough to kill him in cold blood: he wanted to do due diligence and give Nianzol a chance to surrender. But he didn't.

Why do you still fight? The captain commander is dead, the political authority has been replaced many times over. What do your have to fight for but your people, and what in Aizen's reign makes you think that he will lead you to anything but death? Logically there is no reason to fight anymore

It's funny because his poison stuff is one of the few things you can't really do anything against unless you're Mayuri and can sacrifice your entire body on a whim. And it's not like you can get a sample of it to reverse engineer a "cure" to it since it just annihilates the body then presumably is returned to his sword at a later date, or it just destroys itself afterwards and more is made in his sword.

And then there's the fact that if Gin wants to kill you from stealth, he can just put his sword through your head from the start. So it's either you notice him before he murders you or he murders you.

Except Oetsu. Cheeky bastard. Probably Yoruichi and Riku after seeing what he did. They are really clever like that. Any of the non-jobber Captains that have a brain could probably figure something out just from seeing it in action. That he can kill you after he puts his sword through you. It's not really a useful piece of information though. The useful piece of info is that he has to touch you to do it.

“Why are you even fighting?” you ask sincerely, tired of having to beat down and kill people who refuse to give up fighting for a pointless cause. “Our Captain Commander is dead, the political authority has been replaced several times over, and your own leader has been replaced by a rogue shinigami who uses you like disposable fodder.”

“The war is over.”

BG9's response is immediate. “My loyalty is programmed. However if I was rendered incapable of resistance, the situation would be different.”

“I think I can manage that,” Yoruichi insists, clenching her fist.

“With due respect, Captain, your speed is your greatest asset. And you've been barely able to keep up with me.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJzxpmOogqg

“I think you'll be surprised,” she smirks, spinning her remaining sword as arcs of electricity flicker between her wrist and its blade. “Let's try this, shall we?”

Shōsōtō disappears, replaced by a long, ornate guan dao with a broad blade. Its surface is matte with a red tint to it, as if covered in a light layer of frozen blood. It looks enormously heavy, though your wife handles it with apparent ease. She keeps it moving constantly to maintain its momentum.

“Let's go, Mister Roboto!”

You hang back, watching appreciatively as Yoruichi puts her artistry on full display. Her weapon makes for an effective defense as well given her low stance, and she manages to redirect, slice, or otherwise counter several missiles sent her way as she rushes BG9. The robot avoids the head of the guan dao, then blocks its haft as Yoruichi follows through. Its momentum stops, though she simply uses it as an opportunity to reverse herself and lash out with an arcing kick that smashes the side of her opponent's head. A burst of electricity sends BG9 sailing, and Yoruichi follows up with a series of pommel-strikes.

When BG9 tries to recreate his gatling gun, you can hear Rangiku's voice... and the armored joint around his arm explodes as she casts a kidō through it: all this time she must've been waiting for the best possible moment Yoruichi's blade slices through it once more, and the trailing electricity released from her wrists wraps around the robotic quincy's body. Finally, following through with the force of her first swing, Yoruichi arcs the heavy blade straight towards BG9's neck and severs it just under the chin. A strike from her pommel knocks the severed head back towards you, and you catch it as Yoruichi impales her blade into the ground.

She extends her hands.

“Shunkō: Raijin Senkei!”

With a massive column of energy Yoruichi obliterates BG9's body entirely. The guan dao disappears, and she walks towards you with a confident grin tugging at her lips.

“So, that do it for you?”

“... more than you know.”

Your moment is ruined, however, by an interrupting voice.

“Error... error... context uncertain... error... response... negative... error... clearing registry...”

“That doesn't sound good,” Yoruichi mutters. “Did I overdo it?”

“Error... insufficient resources for full function... initiating survival protocol... purging ongoing processes.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2aM5btBLVU

You find yourself silently horrified at what you're hearing, a list of all the basic functions of a human mind listed off and shut down one by one, like a closed system trying to conserve power.

“Juvenile memories deleted.”

“Childhood memories deleted.”

“Fatal postcranial damage detected, voluntary muscular processes halted.”

“Digestive processes halted.”

“Tactile feedback halted.”

“Autonomic processes halted, backup oxygen uptake system active at thirty-five percent capacity.”

“Nervous system now redundant, transferring power to backup autonomic processes. Support currently at fourty-three percent.”

And finally,

“Loyalty subroutines suspended, administrator privileges transferred to next highest authority.”

After a few moments of silence, Yoruichi speaks. “So there was once a human mind in there after all... what the fuck is wrong with these quincies!?”

You can only speak honestly. “I... have no idea.”

Hm. Wonder if Orihime could reverse BG9? But then again, that'd probably also undo the loyalty programming since that was really deep down.

I meant BG9's soul. not Captain TB. Captain TB still has his body in cryo. All it needs is a replacement lung.
>>683811
Thanks for running Queen!~
Questions:
How did Bambi react to BG9's robotic shutdown process on his mind? What's Riku's (and Rosa and Tenkotsuki's) reaction to this?
So what's our nephew's reactions to the Sternritter Assault on the living plane? Since he saw Riku fight on the field and methodically take down The Question what's his opinion on us?
Did Coyote make any further attempts for flirt points or did his laziness get the best of him again while we're away?
>>
>>683861
Are you saying you don't want to give TB a whole new body? I don't think just a lung will save him since his body is on the brink of death normally without Mimi sustaining him. He had been suffering from TB for a very long time and is in terminal condition. Just divine fuckery keeping him from expiring. You can't fix him at that point.
>>
>>683861
The reactions were all pretty similar: mostly degrees of horror and discomfort at the implication that there was a human brain locked inside BG9's head, and that its own internal processes slowly shut down or purged most of it. Yoruichi was particularly offended by what must have been done to him.

Ichigo's not happy that the Sternritter got his mom involved. He didn't see much of Riku's fight because he had his own shit to deal with, but his general response was "holy shit" when he saw Riku impale the Question in the neck.

He also heard some of what she said. Her volume control was a little wonky, so she was shouting the whole time without realizing it.

Coyote may have made nice.

>Nanana was actually okay, despite looking like a spaz.
>Seems like he was a prick, but in-canon he suffered a fatal case of the Kenpachis before he got any development

Bambietta might not be pleased, but we did our best.
>>
>>683954
Bambi's not exactly pleased that they're forced to kill off much of her war-era comrades was she for this gacha batch encounter? I know the Mask would've been salvageable had Riku made the no-mercy choice, but Becenice's a POW now and BG9 is technically still alive, albeit a horrifying veggie for a head. But hey, Aizen tailored the invasion for a reason right? What's her prospects on the current haul of Quincy rehab for her comrades?
>>
>>683994
Wasn't Nanana the idiot who remained loyal to Ywach even after he got nommed by him?
>>
>>684614
yes, but in SSQ, Yhwach is ded. Yamamoto turned Quincy king into a veggie and Aizen later ate Yhwach alive for the godhood.
>>
>>683954
I seem to notice that the G13 have adopted a "leave-no-body-intact" policy when it comes to the the act of killing (most) Sternritter. Was Gigi's abilities included in the report after our initial interrogation of Bambi and Menoly? Because it makes sense to raze the corpses beyond recognition in order to prevent them from being raised into zombies.
>>
>>683954
So Bambi, what's your retirement plan if/when this whole war is over? How well are you adjusting to catching up to the human culture of modern times?
>>
>>683994
Well, if you think about it, we killed five Sternritter but spared six (I guess with BG9 maybe 5.5) and considering how unreasonable they are, that's actually a good track record.

Of course, the fact that all of them (except maybe BG9) are female doesn't really make us look great.

Are there any male Sternritter that don't suck? I guess Askin is okay.
>>
>>685289
Too be fair Bambi killed one of the dudes, Stark and Halibel another 2, and GIn did give one a chance to surrender, which was refused. We only offed 1 that was savable, maybe 1.5 if you count Yoruichi and BG9
>>
>>685289
total Sternritter Number: 26 -1(Yhwach) - 5(KIA) - 6(POW or turncoat) = 14 remaining
keep in mind there is a chance that half the remaining 15 sternritter may be either zombies or under total hypnosis due to Aizen's hypno sword and Gigi's zombie virus, the rest may as well be Aizen fanatics. We really can't expect much more even under best case scenario conditions. At best, the POWs we have now are the best candidates to become potential turncoats/allies for Seireitei. Worst case scenario, we'll have to either neutralize them and treat them like senile patients in an old-folks home which could be downright humiliating for some.
>>
>>685367
It's silly because Tsukishima's ability is more like traditional hypnosis than Aizen's sword which is more like inducing hallucinations.

That was actually a huge problem I had with canon. Most of Riku's band of Expendables are women because most of the (exceedingly few) villains Kubo wrote that were sympathetic in any way were women. The only male characters I could put in that box were Starrk (who just wanted friends), sort-of Grimmkitty (who made a fairly good rival for Ichigo, and had his moments as a character despite being an asshole), Gantenbainne (too chivalrous for his own good), and Askin (the man who had no fucks).

Sadbat and Bambietta were in the same situation where the way they died made me feel for them a little after the fact: the difference being that Sadbat wasn't the sort of character you ever had a chance at winning over, because he's a flat-out nihilist aside from his blind loyalty to Aizen. That wouldn't mesh as part of what Riku has going. Bambietta died so bad in canon, and sparing her from that opened a totally new avenue for character development: exploring the reasons why she and so many other Sternritter were so fucked in the head, and seeing what was underneath that. Bambi wasn't that bad of a person, and cared more about her culture's survival than herself, Star was a coward who'd sell out his own mother to secure his safety, etc.

As for the order in which you met them: down to pure luck. It's actually a little frustrating.
>>
>>684008
Prospects for Berenice aren't great, but at least she has some prospects. BG9 is a more difficult case, as it's a question how much 'human' is even left to save. The Femritter are a slightly more positive prognosis as despite how Candice presents herself they're all in better mental health then the average. The surviving foot soldiers are a mixed bag, and nobody can say for certain if they would even survive the treatment: think Aizen's early hollowfication experiments.
>>683994
>Fatal case of Kenpachi
There's another kind?
>>
>>686539
And before someone else points it out, I did phone vote earlier. I was trying to raise the point I felt had gone unconsidered that Rangiku was absent, and I saw the vote was pretty much done anyway, and wanted to try and liven up the discussion.

Which you guys don't always seem to do. Not a criticism, just an observation.
>>
I'm disappointed that not one of the Vizards even gave a peep during this. Makes me wonder what they could be possibly doing since Aizen is now confirmed to be going on the offensive, even within the the boundaries of the mortal plane.
>>
>>686549
Well, Riku DID also inform them that they've basically been Vizarding wrong this entire time. So there are several possible reasons why they didn't intervene this time.
>>
>>686621
So what was Rangiku doing in the living world? was she escorting Ichigo and his friends back to their homes?
It's mighty suspicious of Aizen to target the 9th division only for this wave of attackers. He could've gone and attacked 2nd or 7th division, but instead he had to gun for the division with the most combat experience.
Also when did our reputation among the sternritter skyrocket the the point they gave Riku the red baron name "White Jackal"?
>>
>>686631
>>686621
That or it could be that Riku Trained the 9th to have excellent response times since the time of Aizen's betrayal.
>>
>>686447
I'd argue that there were a few of the villains who were sympathetic because they seemed more loyal to the wrong man than anything else. At least half of the Fraccon would fit right in the 11th for example. And you can write Bazz-B as anything from a savage backstabbing hot head to someone who had a better idea than most as to what Yhwatch was really like and was trying to make the best of a shitty situation.
>>
>>686621
So when will Kenny get his chance at sparring/fightan Riku Sempai?
Mirai: What do you think of Starrk and Lilynette?
Though I do wonder, if Gods and Goddesses exist in SSQ world, how would that affect King Spooky's worldview he say he's the king of ghost mexico, but is he really just being childish trying to lord over Izanami's realm of the dead like a wannabe god? or does his status hold some merit because I would somewhat see skeleton king hiding a of a fragment of shinreiryoku in his possession. the power of aging could easily fit the bill of being a divine power of sorts.
>>686645
Don't forget about the other arrancar POWs, although amongst the three privion espada Dordoni is now a paraplegic, Gantenbinne feels his life is complete, and Cirucci might be contemplating suicide although Menoly is playing intervention.
Nel's status as Riku's nemesis is based on whether or not Riku makes good on her word of her taking good care of the Privion espada, so Goat girl does have her honor.
>>
>>686631
Since when were you under the impression that Aizen was directing this attack? And yes, Rangiku was escorting Ichigo and his friends.

As for the nickname, it's not really the result of a positive reputation. They're comparing her to an opportunistic killer at best, a pure scavenger at worst. It was a put-down, a way of acknowledging her skills at killing while criticizing her perceived betrayal of her quincy heritage and general lack of morals. To them she's a "jackal", someone who thrives off the deaths of those unfortunate enough to cross her path.

>>686636
They do respond rather quickly as a matter of course, and it's in no small part thanks to Riku drilling it into their heads that the have a responsibility react that quickly and prevent any unnecessary loss of life.
>>
>>686665
>Since when were you under the impression that Aizen was directing this attack?
Well then. This speaks a different story and says much about the Sternritter demographic on their loyalties. Which means shit, we neutered much of our chances in getting possible turncoats.

>As for the nickname, it's not really the result of a positive reputation. They're comparing her to an opportunistic killer at best, a pure scavenger at worst. Well it's no surprise they gave her a nickname like that. Most nicknames gained throughout war are a form of that. A name of recognition and a name to curse at in their dying breaths. Did we get the nickname from when we "saved" Bambi from Gigi? Because I can easily see from their perspective that Riku's act of cockblocking Gigi from zombifying Bambi could qualify as Kill-securing/stealing like a opportunistic pragmatist.
>>
>>686689
>Which means shit, we neutered much of our chances in getting possible turncoats.
I think he was implying these guys ahd 2 objectives. 1 Rescue the captives, 2 kill our "traitorous" ass.
>>
>>685289
BG9 was alright, especially in this canon, it seems. Nianzol was weird but in a relatively harmless way, I feel like he could have been saved had he not fought to the bitter end. Haschwalth is good people, and absolutely fabulous to boot. Bazz-B is basically Renji 2.0.

That's about it. All the others are assholes or bugfuck insane.
>>
>>686698
I've tried to at least heavily imply as much, yes. That their attack was consistent with a personal grudge rather than an organized strategic decision: you've had that, you've had "accidental" contact with alternate authority figures, and you've had the hotheads put in an appearance.

>>686689
It's more a combination of their low opinion of "traitors" and her training as an assassin than any specific action.

>>686662
He'll get a chance, and it will be rather significant.

Mirai thinks it's funny that the only time Starrk tries hard is when he's trying to impress someone: this time it was her. She's not 100% sure how serious he is about the flirting aspect, though it's not like she particularly minds either.

King Spook is aware that he's only playing god, but there's no overt divine interference in Hueco Mundo either.
>>
>>686716
The N seems alright, though we don't see much of him. Cang Du's a bit of a dick, but extremely loyal. If we could get that loyalty working for us we'd be fine.
As for Bazz B, I shudder at the idea of him fighting Kenpachi. If Bazz learns the secret of using two hands we might be doomed.

>“So I take it those three morons sprung you!” Berenice continues jovially. “Looks like you're missin' something there though, you might wanna get that looked at when we get back to Silbern.”
So they're happy that Bambi's out of the slammer and in their apparent hands, The "three morons" refer to Candice, Licorice, and McAllon, and the missing arm implies they have science technology that could give her back a new arm (albeit twisted to the purposes of SCIENCE)
>“It's rude to speak ill of the dead,” Nianzol observes, and when he speaks you can see that not only will his eyes apparently not stay focused he may actually have two tongues. “One of those is the Ninth Division Captain. If she's here, they must have failed.”
They presume that the femritters were killed by Riku's hands in attempt to spring Bambi out, (when in reality they're in jail under some form of asylum to check up on their mental health), and is in hot pursuit of Bambi (when Riku is really accompanying Bambi and trying not to look like a living death threat in order for Bambi to try diplomacy) which gives them more cause to curse Riku's name and break negotiations. "They" must be referring to the 3 Sternritters (The SuperStar, the Roar, and the Underbelly) providing coverage and diversion to distract the 9th from being aware that they're targeting Rangiku.
>>
>>686728
keep in mind some of the Sternritter letters may have been Zombified in order to be kept in line. Can we at least try and speculate who among the alphabet got Gigi's Zombie treatment? It's also highly likely 1/3 of the Quincy footsoldiers were also given the zombie treatment.
>>
>>686731
The "three morons" were Superstar, Roar, and Underbelly. Berenice's not exactly a nice person to talk to, and pretty much insults everyone. Nianzol was also presuming that if Riku was alive, the other three must have died or worse: been captured alive.
>>
>>686737
So you're saying being taken POW is pretty much the penultimate humiliation for a war-era quincy next to becoming a turncoat?
>>
>>686645
Bazz-B was alright. Although I'm guessing Hashbrown is dead in this timeline, so that may change things.
>>
>>686791
hashbrown may be dead, but that doesn't mean he's been zombified into usefulness. Speaking of zombies, can we burn the bodies of the Quincies we killed to prevent Gigi from raising the dead back into life in the long-term? Bambi did give us intel on The Zombie's abilities so it would make sense to cremate the bodies.
>>
>>686739
Pretty much, yes.

>>686798
In fact, Bambietta would be the first to encourage this. She finds the whole thing a little more disgusting than most.
>>
>>686798
I was talking about Bazz-B and Hash's backstory.
>>
>>686874
Have the losses affected Aizen's overall battle strategy since the start of the war?
Total (significant) Casualties on Aizen's side accumulates to: 6 Sternritter KIA, 1 turncoat(?) Sternritter, 4.5 Sternritter POWs, 1 fraccion POW, 3 Privion Espada POW, and several fraccion KIA.
Seireitei Side Casualties has: 1 Lieutenant KIA, 1 Lieutenant permanantly OoA, 1 Dead Captain Commander, 1 clinically dead Captain.
>>
>>687270
Honestly his plans won't have changed much. What he's lost are basically the annoying sycophants with nothing to add, the quincy who can't play nice with arrancar, the out-of-control tempers, the ones who owe each other more loyalty than they show him, etc. Honestly his organization is a lot tighter and more cohesive than it would have been before losing a laundry list of undesirables.

• What’s the Casualty report on the Reigai Army? We do know that Clone-Riku’s toast, clone-Yoruichi and clone-Unohana are now soul pills, who else among the Reigai army were turned into pills/destroyed completely?

• Is it possible to launch a counter-raid on Silbern? Admittedly, we lack intel on Silbern’s location nor the facilities within Silbern, including the traps made. We might have to torture some of our POWs for information.

• To Coyote (The American God): Your little brother Starrk has someone in whom he fancies, a woman of Mongolian descent named Mirai. If you were to guess, what is Starrk’s chances of winning her heart? Is there any dating advice you would like to give him?

• Has BG9 ever thought of creating a backup-file of his human mind in the event something like getting decapitated happens?

• Riku & Rosa: What do you think of the nickname the Sternritters gave you: “White Jackal”?

• Oetsu: So how brutal is the “Rocky training montage” program you and your co-workers have devised for the Captains who need improvement?

• To 9th Division: Do any of you hold play-sessions of Dungeons & Dragons or any other tabletop game?

• So how is the C-46/other G13 divisions/Royal Guard reacting to the Sternritter raid on the living world and 9th div. HQ?

• To G-13/C-46 Financial Department: How bad our wartime budget? How much of it was spent on repairs and supply upkeep?

• Kenny Kenpachi: KENNY YOU MISSED OUT ON ANOTHER FIGHT! AGAIN! AT 9TH DIVISION HEADQUARTERS! 3 STERNRITTER INVADED SEIREITEI AND ANOTHER 4 ATTACKED THE LIVING WORLD! If you don’t want to miss out on all exciting fights, have you ever thought of tailgating/staking out outside of 9th division for the off-chance that another invasion breaks out? The guys at 9th division seems to always know when and where the fights are at.

What about Cang Du, Rober Acutrone, Royd and Loyd?

None of these were total dickbags (mostly due to how little screentime they got)

Hell, even Nianzol wasn't what you'd call a bad guy.

And I'd even argue that as volatile as he was even Bazz-B wasn't that bad especially if you have a psycho like Bambi to compare him to
>>
>>689670
Yeah, I kinda wrote off the ones who had too little screen time to tell anything about them (another major gripe I had with the last arc in particular). Though honestly (heh), Cang Du's only standout moment for me was going after Rangiku AND Hitsugaya with some real serial killer logic. Bazz-B I'll concede was mostly a case of being loyal to the wrong guy for understandable reasons.

As for those we really didn't see much of, Accutrone might not have been that bad of a guy.

Also, hey Spooky.

>The only other reigai that have been pilled are Lieutenants and Komamura. This is a source of embarrassment for the latter. Reigai Kaoru fought to the death. Like a hero.
>Not particularly, due to what Silbern is. You'd really have to find it first.
>I'd actually give him good odds. We Coyotes can be pretty smooth talkers... have I ever told you about the time I convinced the Evening Star to let me ride on her back through the sky? It... didn't end well, but I did it!
>That would have been an interesting idea, if you had shared it before I was decapitated.
>Not sure either of us like it. Rosa had some unkind words about the implication that we somehow 'betrayed' the war-era Sternritter. She insists that they betrayed us first by pissing off to the Shadow Realm.
>I'd say I thought they could survive it... but my momma told me not to tell lies.
>Well, some of us do.
>A bit of pants-shitting across the board. There hasn't been an attack at this scale for a long time.
>If you'd ask the Shihouin representative, they'd tell you those buildings needed to be remodeled or replaced anyway.
>BULLSHIT! I'M THE KENPACHI, NOT HER! COME ATTACK ME IF YOU WANNA FIGHT! I'LL EVEN LET YOU TAKE THE FIRST SHOT FOR FREE!

>Cang Du

You really have to look beneath the surface to apreciate what he was.

-He was one of the very few honorable quincy

-Unlike Haschbrowns he CHOSE to wield melee weapons like a boss

-Out of all the Sternritter he had the brains to actually put his stolen bankai to use

-beat, not fought, BEAT Snowflake and Rangiku into submission and were it not for the shin'eiyaku he'd have won there
(Even with the hollow pill it's likely that his Vollstandig would have been enough to finish the job)

And finally: He had the balls to tell Haschwaldt to essentially go fuck himself.
He was perfectly willing to accept his punishment for his failiure but only from his god.

For what little he did he made a damn good first impression, at least for me.

>Robert "Back in my day we used to ethnically cleanse ourselves because my God believes incest is wincest and good luck telling him otherwise" Accutrone

The fucker took Shunsuis eye, 'nuff said.
Out of all the quincies perhaps he was the most human as he showed an actual fucking emotion (dread).
And even though he is scared shitless of Yhwach (and I assume Aizen?) he'd never betray him because He has a universal kill switch for him.
>>
>>689948
>one of the very few honorable quincy
I wouldn't even go that far, since he's still part of a military machine that's been plotting genocide as revenge for losing a war that they were pretty obviously on the wrong side of in the first place. What Cang Du has are principles, which I do find admirable: in admirable people. Those place him slightly closer to the top of a group of very nasty individuals.

Which isn't to say that none of the Sternritter could be good characters: some of them definitely were in spite of it all. But as for being the sort of enemy whose motivations, loyalties, and fundamental character would allow him to even consider the possibility that something was very much wrong with what he was doing and who he was trusting, I don't see it. Even canon Bambietta had concerns in that twisted little mind of hers.

Yes, for practical purposes, I am implying that Bambietta was a more likely candidate for turning than Cang Du. And since people voted to try and do something that might secure the future survival of the quincy, which Bambietta was explicitly worried about, Riku has been largely successful to that end.
>>
>>689972
Oh I'm not trying to talk shit about Bambietta.
I just wanted to point out that she was all kinds of fucked up in her own rights. (I mean the whole killing guys before/after/without fucking them)

All of the sternritters were fucked in the head but at least Cang Du wasn't a psychopath and he only went after snowflake 'cause his god ordered that those who stole a shinigamis bankai must then go and kill them.

As for the quincy in general one can make the argument that they are merely soldiers following orders, which I'm really getting from Cang Du.
And who could blame them when disobeying said orders will net you execution if you are lucky or random Aushwahlen from nowhere if Yhwach feels like being a mustachioed dick (which he always does)
>>
>>689981
Fair point, I guess, even though I don't particularly share that perspective.

I also wrote a short omake scene, which after rereading it is a bit sadder than I intended. If anyone's still around and interested I could post it.

The leaves on the maples have only just begun to turn, adding little riotous outbursts of red alongside the gold of the ginkgo and the green pines. No admirers ever come here however: only the gravestones of the dead and the birds are usually present to appreciate the natural beauty at this quiet shrine, sitting in the hills just outside of Tokyo.

Except for today.

Soft black shoes stride soundlessly across the grass, stopping only for a polite bow at the torii gate marking the entrance to this little graveyard. A black-clad figure in a white haori walks into the precinct, moving slowly to take in her surroundings. It's a clear day and the air is clean, carrying only the scent of pine needles and moss and the sound of bird calls. She has come here once a year, every year since before the oldest living human was even born, solely to pay her respects.

She heads for the back row of graves, selecting a from among their number a plain marker of rough-hewn white granite, completely unadorned and unremarkable but for its location at the base of an old cherry tree, and for having been nearly overrun over the years by yellow daffodil blossoms. Bending down she brushes aside piles of decomposing leaves, clearing them away from the grave where they had gathered throughout the previous year. This task completed, she places a stick of incense into a small stone bowl set amid the daffodils, and sets it alight.

For several long minutes she sits before the grave, deep in thought, allowing the smoke from the incense to wash over her. Then, without word, she rises to depart.

Shihōin Yoruichi glances once over her shoulder at the grave she herself dug many years ago, and with a faint smile, disappears.

>This is a source of embarrassment for the latter. // Which Kumamora? The real one or the reigai clone? Actually, on second thought if you put it into perspective, having the reigai pilled gives big implications about the real deal.
>Kisuke: when's the next batch of regen serum? We'll need it along with some of Riku's blood plasma for our Sternritter patients!
>Tenkotsuki: Will there be any more Ura Hado lessons when the time is right?
>Riku, Rosa, Tenkotsuki: Rabbit Season or Duck Season?
>BG9: Query: Yoruichi's "Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto" joke. Were you amused?
>James: So what's it like inside Dangai Space?
>Kenny getting his fightboner blueballed has become sort of a running gag at this point right?
>So is Q(The Question) a mute now? Are we gonna keep her that way or will we heal those severed nerves? Because her ability is super useful for increasing the odds of getting the Sternritter to turn-coat.
>>
>>690062
The real Komamura's the one that's a bit embarrassed that his reigai was one of the first Captains to get pilled by someone who wasn't their own clone.

Kisuke's still having trouble synthesizing more regenerative juice, because not only is he trying to reduce the odds of such a procedure killing the patient he's also been involved in dealing with continual assaults on the Seireitei.

>T: In all likelihood there will be. However, teaching the first was a pressing matter of self-defense. Instruction in the others may be seen... less favorably.

>All: Aizen season.

>BG9: Dated but humorous reference to popular culture recognized. Addendum, previous statement not intended to carry implications regarding Lady Yoruichi's advanced age.

>J: WHEEEEEE!!!

Pretty much, yes. But there's still gonna be a point where things get serious on that count, it's just not clear at this point what that's going to look like.

And yes, she's a mute for now. The two nerves Riku successfully targeted would have that precise effect, and you would first need to turn Berenice to get her to use that ability to your advantage. Bambietta would already be considering that.
>>
>>690084
And by "clone" I mean "virtually indistinguishable copy". Not in the sense of a literal clone: that would be the reigai.

The order of that sentence was a little off.
>>
>>690084
>If Kumamora didn't pill his own clone, then who pilled reigai doge?
>Are the reigai-pills collected and sent to Kisuke for analysis or were they sent to the incinerator?
>Do the C-46 and G-13 fully recognize they are in a state of WAR? If the C-46 and G-13 haven't been used to the idea that Seireitei is in the shimigami equivalent of WWI or WW2, they better get used to the idea quickly. Seireitei keeps getting caught flatfooted every time a skirmish like this breaks out and it's been very costly in terms of manpower, casualties, and logistics. Meanwhile Aizen and the Reigai have the luxury to simply pick and choose the time, date, and location of where they'll attack.
>That said, will there be time to hold another Captains Meeting to discuss battle strategy? This is practically the 5th time Seireitei's been on the defensive. And so far we've only launched 2 counteroffensive strikes and both were just for Muramasa only.
>Tenkotsuki and the Royal Guard: what was the worst salty shit-fit you saw a divinity throw? I'm asking this because I'm afraid of what sorts of horrible bitchfits Artemis and the rest of the Divine Pantheons would throw about when Riku tells her that Izangi (he monopolized the world's reishi assets and his kids caused the Quincy War) and Izanami (her bitchfit against her husband gave the world hollows) are responsible for fucking up the world balance. Is there something written in Divine Laws that prevent deities from cursing divinities or regions from other pantheons? Because throwing curses at Japan left and right won't help the situation (Izanami's curse gave the world Hollows and they're a handful already) when Seireitei's in the middle of trying to stop a rogue Shimigami who's running about trying to nom other sources of Shinreiryoku and possibly other fallen/rogue gods.
>Bambi: The G-13's implemented a new policy regarding your Quincy Comrades: They'll move to try and use diplomacy and convince them to surrender so our boys in R&D administer the hollow vaccine (read: Riku's blood plasma) and regen-serum treatment (they're still fiddling with the formula make it work without causing the allergic reaction you Quincies have with Hollows) but it's so they won't be headcases. Unfortunately this will be done on an individual case-by-case basis, but hey! It's leagues better than the standard policy! In regards to Giselle, are you okay with putting her/him down?
>Bambi:I know the regen serum treatment on your brain was successful to a degree and your behavior's improved, what's the most accurate analogy description of the change in thinking clarity pre-treatment and post-treatment.
>Bambi: And how well are you adjusting to Modern times? If/or when this is over, do you have any plans for retirement? Or do you plan on helping the next generation of living quincies in the real world?
>Ichigo: Are you now appreciating Aunty Riku and the strings she's pulling to keep you and your friends relatively safe?
>>
>>690154
Reigai doge got pilled by Sui Feng. Literally the smallest, least intimidating Captain in the roster. She didn't even use Nigeki Keissatsu.

They're sent to be analyzed and stored, after Kisuke raised a moral objection and Shunsui and Ukitake agreed.

The C46 does not wholly recognize a state of war, as they consider Aizen and the Reigai to be armed internal dissenters: a rebellion, in other words.

There will be a chance to hold a Captains' meeting, yes.

>T: "Well, there was that time I was murdered for disobedience. That seems to fit the definition of what you might call a "bitch fit", does it not?"
>Monk: "I... would prefer not to comment."
>Oetsu: "Oh, it was a fuckin' riot! Tell 'em, Monk!"
>Monk: "I thought we agreed we would not speak of this?"
On the second topic, Artemis and Coyote at least know that based on their experiences the Gotei 13 have nothing to do with it. So you could expect many calls for restraint if it came to that.

>B: "It's the best I coulda hoped for, and for sure I'd rather see Gigi die. It's only fair to the people who she's defiled, and tried to defile."
>B: "I'd say it's like waking up from a really vivid nightmare, trying to realize that you're suddenly back in control again. Only the things you did in the nightmare really happened. If I ever feel the butter slipping of my noodles again, I'll probably just kill myself while I have the chance."
>B: "I've actually been thinking about settling Hueco Mundo or the Valley of Screams. We quincies can shape reishi you know, if the arrancar really wanna change how hollows exist we can help them do that. If it's all for protecting innocent lives from hollows... I think I can deal with it."
>>
>>690154
Since I think we're now in autosage and I won't be bumping a three-day-old thread to the top, I'll go back and get that last question.

>Ichigo: "It was easy to blame her at first, but nobody can really say what would've happened if Riku was never involved in the first place. Things might've been better, they might've been worse, or they mighta been pretty much the same except I'd have been... I dunno, like a girl or something."
>"Point is she and the Shibas really seem like they try and treat my family like their family. Even if there was nothing else, I could at least respect that."
>>
Are Amagai's cronies still a thing?
>>
>>693858

>BG9's hates you, but he also finds his current situation amusing. || Query of clarification: Literal headcase (a head in a helmet) being taken in as POW and placed amongst comrades whose mental state qualify them as (mental) headcases?
>Regarding your explanation of how Riku's shinreiryoku: See pic related. Is the formula correct?
Dammit Queen, I had to use fucking Algebra/Calculus just for it to make sense. I hope you can understand the equations and chicken scratch.
>All this flurry of skirmishes and activity is leaving me confused, can you give us a timeline/timetable with marked dates of all the major events (battles, important meetings, who showed up, who died, etc) up to this thread session? A good starting point would be the day Aizen fled Seireitei.
>Is "flirting/Impressing Mirai" Starrk's new hobby?
>Does Starrk have any new techniques/skills/tricks aside from his Cero Wolves or his Gran Rey Machine-gun? I can easily see him using his pistols to fire individual Bala rounds, Apacci's patented Bala Buckshot, or just pull off trickshots with his guns. Which brings to mind, has Starrk seen any John Woo films? I would love to recommend him to watch Equilibrium, but that film comes out in 2002
>BG9: Head! I need a body. Head! Not just any body. Head! You know I'm just a head... Heeead!~
>C-46 treats the thing like a rebellion, not a war || How do they think it's not a war? The opposing side(s) has enough cumulative manpower/firepower to potentially take down Seiteirei's Police force AND THEN SOME. Do they even have a threshold policy for declaring full-scale war aside from another C-46 massacre? Although granted, the fact that Riku and the 9th have such good response times despite the captain getting away with "technically legal activities" which BENEFITED Seireitei may be a factor in their decision making.

I'll work on answering these by the weekend, particularly constructing a timeline, but I'm going to have to prioritize preparations for SSQ on Saturday and SoZ on Sunday.

Aside from the caveat that Bankai progression is marked in lunar years, there's only two real points here. First is that there's no standard unit of reiatsu, because there are maybe two people who could actually do something with that information.

Second point is more important, and that's the fact that there are really two factors being affected: reiryoku, which is essentially "potential" spiritual power, and reiatsu, which is the force a being can exert on its surroundings. Tenkotsuki's shikai affects reiatsu. Her Bankai affects the composition of Riku's reiryoku as well as increasing her total reiatsu output, meaning there's more of it and it has a different quality. The number of tails is a reflection of the percentage converted, and is determined by the combination of Riku and tenkotsuki's ages. Rosa's Resurreccion affects both: it increases reiatsu output whenever it's active, and when Tenkotsuki's Bankai is also active it increases the fraction of Riku's reiryoku that becomes shinreiryoku. It does this because suddenly Tenkotsuki's Bankai is also considering Rosa's age.
