You know this dream. It mocks you. It teases you with visions of grandeur. You don’t have it every night, but when you do, it is unchanged. Always the same events, yet you can never predict them. As you progress through it, you remember. Never different, never straying. You’ve begged the gods for an explanation, but they remain silent. Either ignorant of your inwards protest, or uncaring towards it, the damned dream marches on.

Standing at the bow of your longboat, you can feel the salt wind in your beard, and hear the worried shouts of the villagers that are just now seeing your arrival from the horizon. Gathering the children inside, trying to hide their valuables, setting the livestock free, grabbing whatever makeshift weapons they could find. None of it would matter. The men of the North were about to descend on them, and nothing short of the divine intervention of Odin himself could stop that.

Your boat hits the beach, rocking you and your men forward with the force. Almost immediately, your men drop their oars, pick up arms, and leap over the side of the ship. You quickly follow suit; no men respect a leader that will not fight beside them.

How do you hit the surf?

In your youth, you were chubby. That’s the term Geira, the healer, used anyway. The other kids called you other, less polite names. That all stopped as you grew into your weight, your shoulders broadened, and your arms and chest began to thicken. It’s been a long time since anyone has made any comment to your face.

You grunt as you land from the boat. Sooner or later, your knees aren’t going to be taking this any more. You’ll be some old man, sitting around a tavern table, exaggerating stories about your scars. Until then, however, men to kill and money to be made.

You slowly walk up to the rough line your men have taken on the beach. Already, half a dozen foolish farmers lie dead or dying on the sand. They should have known better.

As your men prepare to rush the village proper, a group of roughly a dozen men, all in chainmail with roundshields and spears arrive to halt your progress. They drop to their knees, and a small hail of arrows fly over their heads. Most of them stick into shields, but you see one man drop to the ground, the wooden shaft sticking out of his chest. Nothing to be done, you begin to bark orders at your men, now that the enemy have been shown to have some teeth.

>Charge! Break their lines!
>Shield wall! Defend your brothers!
>Archers! Pin them down!

“Shield WALL!”, you shout. Nearly instantaneously, your med raise shields, and begin using their shields to cover both themselves and their brothers in arms. “Ad-VANCE!”, you yell to your men. Again, almost as one, the edges of the shield wall curve inward, and sets of spears poke out any holes. Enemy arrows continue to pound harmlessly into the wooden wall.

The walls meet at a sprint, shields and spears almost covering the screams and shouts of battle. Men in the back of both sides begin pounding away with spears and axes. You yourself hook a shield with a massive daneaxe, pulling it away for the man behind to be stuck by a norse spear. This provides the opening your men need, and they swarm the fresh hole, tramping the poor man in the process. Now that battle has been joined proper, you bury the blade of your daneaxe into the skull of a soldier, splitting it nearly down to the jaw. Leaving it there to collect later, you draw a smaller, faster axe and a shield.

Your men are fighting the other various foot soldiers, and a handful are making short work of enemy archers. As the chaos of battle escalates, a man who is clearly an officer steps from around the corner of a house with a pair of bodyguards. Coward wasn’t fighting and bleeding alongside his men, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t dangerous.

He sees you for what you are, and orders his men to attack. He, of course, sits back, and waits for the results.

>Combat begun. Two enemies, both in chainmail, one with a sword and shield, one with a spear.
>You have a bearded axe and a large round shield, and are wearing chainmail. You also have a seax sheathed on your belt.
>Your body type gives you advantages to bullrushing and over powering opponents

What's a Handler quest without an obscene amount of secondary rolls?
>>
You take a few steps back to buy yourself some time, and bark at a few men already pulling loot off of a handful of dead archers. They quickly gather their shields and weapons, and form a very small shield wall with you. Quickly explaining the plan to them, you rush the two men, hitting them at a sprint. The man with a spear is knocked clean onto his back, and is quickly finished by a sword to his throat.

The man with a shield is luckier. He manages to misdirect the rush in a way that he avoids the brunt of it, but is still knocked back, stumbling. You leave him for your men to deal with, and slowly walk up to the officer. He grunts at you, and pulls a two-handed sword from a sheath on his back. You heft your shield a little higher, and brace yourself. You hate blocking the weight of these things. He raises it high above his head, and charges you screaming. He hopes to end this fight through sheer ferocity. You doubt it will work.

You feign to meet his charge head on. He swings with the rage of a man who knows he’s probably going to lose, and you try to deflect it with your shield. You hit it a little too square, and you hear the weight of the huge sword crack a few planks of your shield, and you can already feel the bruising of your shoulder and forearm. With the lucky hit, you find it hard to maneuver your weapon, but you do manage to slam the edge of your shield into his stomach and pivot around behind him.

He wastes little time catching his breath. He likely knows he doesn’t have it. You can already see his body twisting for a massive, spinning swing.

>>
>>669999

>>
Oh, fuck. Your shield is on the wrong side. You can’t block something that heavy with a weapon. If you’re lucky, this strike is going to take your arm off. If you aren’t, it’s going to get caught in your shield anyway, after cutting you right in half.

Thinking fast, you do about the only thing you can. You swing your axe up, blade down, between his legs. A cheap shot, sure, but the other option is dying. His chainmail stops the worse from happening, but as he twists for the attack, his leg gets caught up on the haft, and the blade opens a gash on his inner thigh.

He screams, and doubles over as you pull your axe free. He’s bent over in front of you. Looking up at you, he snarls something in a language you don’t speak, attempts to swing the sword up at you in one last, desperate attempt to come out the victor of at least this fight.

>>
You decide to interrupt the wounded man’s swing with a hard jab from the shield into his side. You can hear ribs cracking, even over his shouts, as he knows his time comes to an end. You end his misery with a chop to the back of his neck, finishing the screams in one fell swoop. The head didn’t come right off, as you were hoping, but he’s just as dead, anyway. You kick the sword out of his hand, anyway, and turn around. Your men are standing, watching. They know damn well not to interrupt a fight you’re in, and they’re all old enough to not find the joy in slaughtering peasants when it isn’t needed.

You turn, and raise your bloody axe towards the noon sun. “Pick it clean!,” you shout as the men begin to cheer your name.

The men begin chanting your name, as always. Now, however, for the first time in as long as you can remember, something is different. There is a man on the beach, a few hundred yards away. A spear in one hand, a raven on each shoulder. He disappears behind a shield that is raised by one of your men, and is gone when it is lowered again. They continue chanting.

“Haskell!”

“Haskell!”

You bolt upright in your hay bed, and see your father shaking you awake. The dream, as always, fades from your mind. You still can’t help but feel something isn’t quite right.

“Get up,” the gruff but loving old man says. “It’s almost mid-day, you laze-about. I need help outside.”

He probably did. Your family’s been on some hard times of late. Your father lost half a hand on a raid and hasn’t gone out since, your mother fell ill on a raid and never recovered, dying some year and a half ago. Lastly, about six months ago, your older brother Bolli left on a raiding ship with about twenty other men. None were seen or heard from since.

You raise yourself up from bed, knowing you’re really the only person your father Sven can count on any more. You pull on warmer clothes, and head outside to the

Okay, NOW it can be called a fields victory. Writing.

You step outside to the brisk spring air, and see your father on the plow in one of the fields. You grab a bag of seed and follow him, planting for the year. It’s long, boring work, but at least you aren’t on your hands and knees picking stones and weeds from the soil. That was always the worst. The brightest side, though, is that some day this farm would be yours. Assuming your family's bad luck turned around, this could be quite the income. Which is good, since no one has been willing to take you raiding due to the Svenson’s clan track record of it. One maimed, one dead, one missing. The north takes luck too seriously to mess around with that.

You finish the field in a few hours, and sit down to have a simple lunch with your father, discussing the plans for the rest of the fields. As you finish and stand to head out to the village, your father speaks.

“Knut stopped by earlier, when you were sleeping. It was pretty early, so he didn’t want to wake you. I figure he’s still looking for you.”

Knut Olafson. The tall, lanky bookworm has been your best friend since either of you could walk. The scatterbrained boy of course didn’t tell your father where he would be, so you just thank your father and start heading towards your usual spot.

The mead hall isn’t far into town, and you enter before too long a walk. As you walk in, the patrons are, as usual, arguing over swords or axes.

You hear your friend, Anders, boasting over the din of the fight. “If you have to argue over them,” he shouts, “it’s because you aren’t skilled enough to use both!”

Anders, the brash young berserker, earns himself a few scowls, a handful of shouts, and even a half-full mug thrown at him for his trouble. His athletic frame has no trouble dodging it. He looks back up from his duck, and he sees you. Waving you over to himself and Knut, a table all to themselves.

“Is Erik not with you,” the lanky Knut asks, referring to the fourth member of your little group. Anders rolls his eyes, and gives a sigh.

“I’ve been telling you. He’s probably at the docks with his dad,” he says. Spends more time fighting down there than I do raiding.”

Knut nods, apparently blind to the exasperation of Anders. “I suppose so, if he’s not with Haskell.” He absentmindedly takes a swig from his mead, before restarting the conversation.

You spend a few hours there, chatting and listening in to stories as you always do. They’re the same as always, except for them getting a little bit more spectacular each time.

Before you know it, Anders stops mid sentence and looks to you. “Don’t you have to be to work, soon?” He asks.

He’s right. You absolutely do. But where?

“Why yes, yes I do,” you reply. “Olaf’s probably so lost in his books anyway, he won’t notice I’m already late. You heading home anyway, Knut?”

“I am, actually. I’ll tag along.”

The two of you make the way out of town down the coast. While you walk, you chat idly. Knut really is an incredible friend. So thirsty to see the world, he still won’t go on a raiding party to experience it without you. That’s friendship.

You arrive at the trading post, and start going over the ledger. Olaf is much like his son, Knut, head in the clouds, far more interested in adventure and mystery than the practicality of running a business. His daughter isn’t much better, but she’s pretty enough to get away with it. So, he taught you to read and write so he could spend more time with more fascinating things. Not that you’re complaining. You realize how useful a skill it is, especially if you’ll be running the farm some day.

You finish up, and find everything in the order it should be. Olaf pays you for the day, and you wave goodbye to the family as you leave to head home. You’re about halfway home, with about half an hour of daylight left. That’s when you hear Bow Bjorn’s horn.

Three bellows. Frost giants, on the way. Every able bodied man is expected to come to the villages defense, and you’re no coward. You sprint home, and consider your options for weapons.

>Choose two

>Your handaxe
More a hatchet than a true axe, but it’ll do in a pinch.

>The wood splitting axe out back
Heavy and awkward, it will still crush anything it won’t cut.

>Dad’s old greatsword
Before he lost three fingers, Sven was a terror with this thing. You could be, too.

>Mom’s shield
Your mother was a feared shieldmaiden. You reckon many men have lost teeth and broken noses on the edge of this.

>Bolli’s old sword
Your brother replaced this sword just a few weeks before he disappeared with the rest of the Tyr’s Fury. Still sharp, though.

>The hunting spear
If you trust this against a bear or a boar, you trust it against a frost giant

>Your short bow
Meant for less dangerous game than bears or giants, this is more than capable of putting holes in threats

There may be better and more conventional weapons than your hatchet, but none that you’re more familiar or comfortable with. You grab it from it’s spot in your room, and take your late mother’s shield off the wall on your way out. You sprint back into the village, the adrenaline keeping you from being too winded.

You seem to be just a touch late to the party, and you can hear fighting on the far end of town. You won’t make it there, now, though. There’s a frost giant between you and there, and you know damn well he sees you.

Luckily, it seems Bow Bjorn has already done some work on this one. He’s wounded. Two arrows in your back, and you’ve seen enough of Bjorn’s handiwork to know that’s his spear wound on it’s belly.

He’s no less dangerous just because he’s hurt, though. He’s still probably ten feet, tallish for a giant, but not massive. LIkely weighs about six hundred pounds, too, and boy is he pissed. He screams a guttural shriek, and charges you, teeth bared. You raise the shield, rather unused to the weight, but still feeling somewhat natural. Your other hand grips the axe handle ever tighter.

You hold your ground, letting it rush you. At the last second, you spin on the ball of a foot, and send a slash down it’s back. You manage to get the shield up in time, but you’re still knocked back several steps, and are finding it hard to catch your breath.

You circle for a moment, considering your options. You briefly want to bait it into a charge, but you got tagged last time that happened and reconsider.

You’ve spent enough time in the meadhall to know a few things about frost giants. They’re smart enough to be tricked, but too dumb to realize it. You fake a swing low with the axe to get its arms down, then at the last second, pull back and slam the shield into its screaming maw, stepping into the blow and putting your considerable weight behind it. You feel, rather than hear or see, the cheek bone crush beneath the powerful strike. You’re not sure, but you think an eyeball bursts

It screams in agony and out of pure instinct, lashes out with a powerful arm. The attack throws you against a house wall, and you feel the wicked claws dig into your chest, drawing blood and forcing a scream from your throat.

The frost giant seems to know it’s on its last leg, and charges you brutally. He wants to use his size and weight to end this fight before it’s too late.

The beast lunges at you, screaming bloody murder the whole time. You react, rather than attack, but it does the job just as well. As it closes the distance, you find our arm swinging forward with a force you didn’t know you had inside.

The axe head slams into the creature's face, and it instantly goes limp. Luckily, you have the presence of mind to step out of the way quickly as it slams into the ground, dead. You take a deep breath, and look around you.

Leaning ever-so-casually against a wall a few houses down is none other than Big Bjorn. The only man in the village taller than you, and the local raid leader. Pretty much any ship that leaves your village is under Big Bjorn’s orders. He begins walking towards you, his eyes not leaving you.

He reaches the other side of the dead frost giant, and looks down at it. One handedly, he lifts its head to pull your axe out of his face.

“Let’s go see Geira for those wounds,” he says. “Then I think we should go talk to your father.”

“How’s the battle going?,” you ask as you reach for your ask. “How many were there?”

“It’s over,” he says, simply. “There were six, including this one. A little small for a raiding party, but winter might have been hard on them.”

You begin walking beside him, beginning to feel the burning pain in your chest now that the adrenaline is running out. “Think he has a splitting headache after that?”

Big Bjorn groans, and raises a hand to his face. “I’ve taken swords that hurt less than that joke, Haskell.”

“Any chance I could get Bow Bjorn to turn him into a rug?,” you ask as you chuckle to yourself. Fuck Big Bjorn, that was funny.

“Stop cracking bad jokes, I’ll have him do a full mount,” He replies, giving you a playful shove. Problem is, the man’s a giant, and nothing he does is gentle. You stumble to the side.

“So, why am I coming with you?”

“Because Geira needs to clean and bandage those gashes, and I need to talk to Sven about something. I want you there for it.” He’s not a man that does a lot of extra talking.

You walk silently for most of the rest of the way, and the awkwardness is almost painful to you. “So… How’s your day going?,” you ask, desperate for some conversation.

“I think it just got a whole lot better,” he says, smiling into the distance.

You try to think about what he meant, but before you know it, you’re at Geira’s house. Goti, the blacksmith, is sitting in a chair, a massive bruise already crossing his face, and he seems somewhat out of it. Must have taken a blow to the head and rung his bell. Astrid is also there, helping Geira.

When she sees you, she leaves Goti in Astrid’s hands, and walks over to you, tsking your wounds. She cuts your shirt off, and begins applying a slave and bandages while chastising you about ‘being so irresponsible’ as to get yourself mauled.

You sit patiently through both her care and her lecture, and before you know it, she’s got you bandaged up and is back working on Goti.

Astrid leaves the concussed blacksmith, and walks over to your spot in the room.

“And just what happened to you,” she asks in her quiet voice, looking between your wounds and your face.

“Took a frost giant, all by himself,” Big Bjorn steps in. “Don’t do that for the first time without a little blood.”

Calm it down with the sissy shit were a viking anon and vikings who did that shit got fucked up by other vikings
>>
>>671181
>>671185
We can still be a nice guy to other Vikings. I never said we'd be nice to EVERYONE.
>>
“I just wanted to axe him a question, and he got all mad,” you say, grinning wildly. “Don’t worry, though. We buried the hatchet.”

Astrid rolls her eyes, and you hear Bjorn give a loud, exaggerated grunt.

“Keep that up, and I may not want to talk to Sven,” he say. You’re still chuckling to yourself.

“Really though,” you say, waving off the puns. “I think Bow Bjorn got a hold of him before it got to town. It was wounded when we found each other. Luckily for me,” you add, gesturing to the gouges over your chest.

“Still no small feat,” Bjorn says. “Come on, Haskell. We should speak to your father before another bad joke drives me insane.”

You wave goodbye to Astrid, Geira, and Goti as you leave the cottage, and walk out to your farm, where your father is waiting by the door. He raises an eyebrow at your bandages.

“Have a little adventure, did we?,” he asks. “This going to be about what I think it’s going to be about?,” he says as he turns to Bjorn.

“Why don’t you go find a shirt, Haskell,” Bjorn says. It was not a question. “Your father will find you when we’re done.”

You go inside, and even from your room in the back of the house, you can hear the arguing and shouting. Big Bjorn is not a quiet man, and your father has quite the temper from his berserking days.

After a few minutes, and a slow quieting down of the volume, you hear the door shut, and your father enters your room.

“Meet Big Bjorn at his house tomorrow,” he says, his face unreadable. “He wants to take you raiding.”

No anon
>>
>>671180
>Have you been keeping an eye on me?

>>671186
Lets just play an asshole who wants to fight and steal
>>
>>671188
And I think that's where we'll stop for thread 1. Had a lot of fun, guys. This has been in development a long time, and I'm glad to see it get such a good response. Thanks for playing, and I always love criticism, questions, and feedback.

Don't worry about archiving, I'll take care of it.

I'll stick around for a QnA if anyone has burning questions
>>
>>671182
Or more appropriate for a sea going people:
Halyard Haskell (a halyard is a type of rope used to hoist sails)
>>
>>671191
>>Have you been keeping an eye on me?

>Still hanging around?
>>
>>671191
Stealing is the lowest crime a Viking can do. We don't steal we pillage.
>>
>>671197
What is pillaging but stealing for other people

>>671196
>Man people have been raven about you forever
>>
>>671191
That's boring though. We need something else to go off of. I'd be fine with being a dick if we had something else to go on other than wanting to steal.
>>
>>671197
That's one of the fucked up things about viking culture.

Taking something from someone = Not okay

Killing someone, then taking something from them = A-okay
>>
>>671202
We like to tell bad jokes. Being complex doesn't make a character good, a character can be relatively simple and be a great character
>>
>>671201
Nope pillaging involves killing and taking, stealing involves no killing. It was a real difference to them back then, Thief's were one of the few kinds of people who got shitty afterlifes
>>
>>671204
Well if he couldn't stop you from murdering him to death, clearly he doesn't deserve to have that stuff.
>>
>>671205
Yeah I know, but it can't be too simple either. I just usually go for nice because it's easy to be nice.
>>
>>671201
>Glad to see you come off of your high horse.

I think Odin would actually consider killing Haskell at this point.
>>
>>671211
Yeah, that's pretty much it.

I forget which one, but there's a saga where a few guys steal from someone, decide it wasn't honorable, go back to kill them, then consider it hunkey-dory
>>
>>671206
You get what I mean though

>>671204
Any idea when you'll be running again

>>671212
And thats what we do ever quest. Take a chance do something different. And using nice to describe a character isn't good enough, try for more descriptive words like Charitable, patient, jolly.

>>671218
>I have to ask when you were hanging from that tree did your arms get thor?
>>
>>671243
>You should get a new hat. The brim looks a little Freya'd on that one.
>>
>>671243
Maybe Tuesday, but I'm not sure. Keep an eye ont the twitter. Link, because I feel I have some new players that never followed Contractor Quest

https://twitter.com/ContractorQM

>>671218
I'm considering killing Haskell at this point

Not really though. I love this shit.
>>
>>671252
>Don't worry I won't tell anyone I saw you. I'll keep it loki
>>
>>671243
I hope somebody else has a better grasp on Norse mythology than I do then. I haven't the faintest idea what they were actually like.
>>
>>671286
They were pretty much people. They had flaws. That's what I like about it over modern religions, despite the fact I follow one. It's more complex than 'God is perfect, and he made everything. Do not question him.'
>>
>>671281
>Look on the bright side, despite all your years you aren't getting any Baldr.
>>
>>671268
Since Norse mythology creatures are a thing here, are you also gonna feature the ones in other countries?
>>
>>671302
>Are my jokes making you sad? Is that why your in Tyrs?
>>
>>671301

I meant more along the lines of what their culture was like. Roman for instance loved order and were incredibly xenophobic to anyone they couldn't conquer and make Roman. The British like tea, etc.

Oh and thanks for running. You may want to look into getting a trip. There aren't many people that try to fuck up quest by impersonating the QM because they don't have a trip but I've seen it happen.
>>
>>671310
>Skin cancer? Or just a mjollnir?

I can't, my brain shut down from lack of oxygen from bad pun laughing.
>>
>>671307
Yep. Quest'll have region specific monsters, each with their own challenges and tactics

>>671315
Luck was a huge thing in Norse culture. So was hygiene. There's a few books I could recomend if you want to learn, or a few websites. I'm not too worried about a trip between always announcing threads on twitter and IDs.

If I don't announce a thread on twitter, It's a fake. Also, there's another Handler around running Magical Girl for Hire quest. Not me, but I don't care enough to ask him to change it when he's already established.
>>
>>671307
Don't fuck with draugr.
>>
>>671307
There will be, yes. Region specific monsters with their own challenges and tactics.

>>671315
I have a few books and websites if you're curious enough. We'll touch on some stuff as the quest goes on, too.

I'm not too worried about a trip. If I don't announce a thread on twitter, it isn't me. I'm off my phone now, so my ID will be constant.

Also, there's another Handler. He runs Magical Girl for Hire quest. I didn't ask him to change since we didn't notice until he was already three or four threads in. But I don't do that one. Contractor Quest and this one are mine.
>>
>>671324
>>671339
I REFRESHED THIS THREAD SO MANY TIMES I JUST THOUGHT I CLOSED OUT OF THE WINDOW LIKE A DUMBASS

I EVEN OPENED IT UP AGAIN FROM THE CATALOG WHAT THE FUCK
>>
>>671339
I'll have to get a twitter then.

Also sorry for fucking up earlier and saying mythology and misleading you, my bad. I'm pretty tired.

Also I guess everyone's having posting trouble.
>>
>>671343
The puns reached critical mass and short-circuited your brain.
>>
>>671350
No worries. It's a pretty easy mistake to make at this time of night.

Hiroshimoot, fix this shit
>>
>>671357
We can only hope. It's part of the reason I went on a break. It happened way too often for my liking.
>>
some thread music maybe?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cDa7yZeci8
>>
>>671201
Pillaging is fighting with the interest of taking. Taking without the other being the wiser is a low action.
>>
Interesting quest! Enjoyed reading it!

Small Haskell will gain gold and a reputation on his raids?
>>
>>672029
Thanks! I appreciate it.

Haskell will gain a lot of things on his raids. Gold and reputation are included
>>
>>672070
You forgot to post your twitter for new readers
>>
>>674469
He didn't: >>671268
https://twitter.com/ContractorQM
>>
To be perfectly honest, I'm not too crazy about dropping intentionally bad puns constantly.

Here and there sure, but I could dig a little serious viking

Fun looking either way, looking forward to pt2
>>
>>675971
Maybe the youngling will lose the jokes after he gets some more hits on the head - or some other characters react negatively...
