It is the 31st century. A time of endless wars that rage on across human occupied space. As star empires clash, these epic battles are won and lost by giant war machines known as battlemechs. These awesome weapons of war are giant humanoid titans of metal, bristling with built in lasers, autocannons, and dozens of other lethal weapons with enough firepower to level entire city blocks. The men and women piloting these devastating machines are known as, Mechwarriors.

Your name is Nicholas Parker, a newly hired mercenary fresh out of academy looking to score what you thought would be the easiest payday of your life.

Stuck in a poverty stricken wasteland with a deadbeat father unable to keep food on the table, as well as a job that you hate never paying you enough at the end of the day, Signing on to a mercenary company sounded like a good way out. Especially if they were willing to pay for your education. You never thought you would see yourself piloting a battle mech. The money would be more than enough to support you out on your own as well as keep the family fed back home. They made it all sound like it would be a piece of cake.

Now you were already making your way planet side onboard a company dropship, staring down the biggest sum of C-bills you’ve ever seen. And all you gotta do is scan some lousy buildings and make it back to the dropship in one piece. The company was leasing out a mech for you, considering there was no way in hell you could afford your own, but the payday was still looking mighty fine, even after the expenses. There were still a couple of hours before making it to the landing site.

You wondered what it is you should do to kill time.

You decided it would be best if he quickly ran over the briefing once more. They handed out documents for everyone to look over at their leisure, so he swiped the folder off his nightstand and glossed over the papers.

The enemy in this operation consists of a pirate faction that has seized an unknown amount of territory planet side. Multiple lances have been deployed to survey the surrounding settlements.
The mission objective was to scan local buildings and terrain for signs of vehicle or mech scale weapons construction. If any such evidence is found, we are then to record the positional data to then be returned to command to assign a proper attack force to re-claim the territory.
Our employers intel states that there has been no large-scale military movements in the area, but pirate forces have been seen moving in and out of the area on few occasions, Consisting mostly of light vehicles or infantry forces. Pirate vehicular lances mostly consisting of scorpion light tanks. 25 ton vehicles at best boasting a small amount of close range firepower.
There are no reports of any mech forces in the area. So the operation should be a breeze. Pop a few tanks, get the information we need and get out.

After looking over the files you placed the documents back down on your nightstand as you made your way down towards the mech bays. You figured now was as good a time as any to find out what you’d be piloting.
On your way down the hall you passed by someone who looked familiar. You recognized her from the briefing, it was one of the mechwarriors you’d be serving alongside. She didn’t seem to be in much of a hurry and was just wandering down the hall eyes fixed on the dark metal floor.

You figured it would be more important to start getting on good terms with your comrades since they might end up saving your ass someday.
You stop and turn around heading back towards the woman. Her hair was a bright blond, and about shoulder length. Her rather tight fitting leathers revealed her well-toned body.

“Hi, I'm Nicholas. It's my first mission. Do you have any advice?” you said as you waved her down.

After a few seconds she finally whipped her head upright and spun around to face you. Her eyes were also a rather bright shade of blue. It was certainly something that stood out to you.
”Oh! I’m sorry!! I didn’t see you there, ahaha… She said, eyes shut and scratching the back of her head.
”I wish I could help, but this is actually my first time going out in the field too.. But its good to meet you! My name is Alisa. I really haven’t been here much longer than you have been.”

Two rookies? you thought to yourself. Either this mission really was going to be a piece of cake or something was really wrong with this picture. A standard lance only consists of 4 people, So having two members who are totally green is accounting for half of our forces.

“Well, Hopefully we can get some good experience from this operation huh?”

”Oh yes! I’m looking forward to it.” she said wearing a smile.
“So have you seen which battle mech you’ve been assigned?” you inquired.

”Yeah I got a pretty good look at it. They have me taking a Thorn.. THE-N he called it.. The tech there did a really good job explaining things too. I was actually headed back to go over the briefing again to make sure I’ve got it all memorized.”

” Thorn…The N? I’ve never heard of that mech before.. huh..”

“Well I better get going then Alisa, it was nice talking with you. Good luck” you said, eager to find out which mech you had been assigned.

“Thanks Nicholas, you too!” she cheerily replied, turning around and heading off towards her room.

You continued down the hallway following the signs posted along the walls until you made your way into the mechbay. The wide open spaces housed tons of machinery, and a handful of men could be seen scampering from one machine to the other, tools in hand working on who knows what. And there they were. Standing at roughly 7-9 meters tall were those awesome weapons of war. One of the men working on the machines made his way over to you and immediately began talking.

“Aye, a real beauty aren’t they. Here about your battle mech ya? The names John Ishido, I'll be yer mech tech for the length of this contract.”

“Yeah that’s right. My names Nicholas.” You hastily replied.

”Ah, Nicholas.. well then you’ll be headin` out with this ol` boy.
The man lead you over to the far end of the bay and showed you to your mech.
” This heres the Commando, variant COM-2D. a 25 ton mech sporting 4 tons of standard armor, with a running speed of 98kph, what this fella may be lacking in armor he sure makes up for in respectable firepower for its size.. two functional hands for your clubbing and gripping pleasure, equipped with one medium laser in yer left arm, one 4-bay short range missle launcher on the right, and a 6-bay short range missle launcher in the center torso, you’ll be blowin holes in anything unfortunate enough to march up to ya, But don’t go pickin fights at range, or be flashin your backside to anyone who aint on your side. We did make one small modification on this baby.. We put both yer ammo bins in the left torso, so that’s the one to look out for.

“I see… and I heard Alisa say she’s piloting The n?”

”the n? what in… Oh… you mean the Thorn. T.H.E dash N.. you had me confused there… Yeah that’s right. All the mechs you’ll be taking out on this op are running about the same speed across the board. The last thing you’ll want are any stragglers if things go south on ya. We aren’t lookin to pick a fight here.
It made sense.. But how much trouble would we really be running into was the question. Looking at a clock posted on the wall you could see that it was almost the scheduled landing time, you only had a few more minutes to spare.

You decided to use the remainder of your free time learning what you can about your battle mech, and taking in whatever you could. There was no such thing as too much information.

“So, is there anything else I should know about this thing? It must be pretty old right?”

”Yea… This ol` boy’s been around quite some time. The actuators are a little exposed but it aint nothing you should have to worry about unless you plan on fallin into a couple platoons of infantrymen.

“Is there anything else you can tell me? This is my first deployment after all.” You asked.

”If you want my advice kid, above all else, listen to what the commander tells ya. He’s been here a good number of years and knows his stuff. I’ll tell ya that we aint the fanciest merc company in the inner sphere, but you wouldn’t be here if you was looking for the best of the best. You were lookin for a place to start. Just keep that in mind. We aint lookin to throw you all into the lion’s den first thing, so learn as much as ya can while you’re out there… N don’t go tearing this thing up ya hear?”

“I hear ya.. Thanks John..” you said.
Not soon after the intercom crackled as the commander’s voice echoed throughout the mech bay.

“ETA is 5 minutes, Mechwarriors suit up and report to your designated positions and await further instructions.”

It was then that pilots began to trickle into the lower mech bay, neuro helmets in hand as they began to put on their cooling vests and migrate to their lances.

“good luck kid” John said as he hurried off to make his final adjustments.
You heard someone call your name as you looked around and saw Alisa heading over towards you waving. She was being followed by two other men. A younger man and an older one, The Commander.

“Alright Delta lance, we’ll be using our designated call signs from here on out, there hasn’t been any new information since our initial briefing, so if you have any further questions, now is the time.”

This was it, the mission was finally underway. You took one last look at your battle mech before facing your commander.

“Sir, what formation will we be taking, what are our rules of engagement, and what’s our exfiltration plan encase we end up in a firefight?” You asked.

The commander paused for a moment, looking you over before he began speaking.
” We’ll be moving in a wedge formation, making our way towards a small suburban area. Once we reach the designated Nav point, we’ll fan out to begin scanning the surrounding buildings. We’re to engage any hostile vehicles in the area, and additional threats as necessary. Avoid the destruction of civilian buildings, even if positively identified as illegal weapons factories. Unfortunately we’re operating alone on this one, the nearest allied lance will be several kilometers out. Exfiltration will be making our best speed to the dropship. Depending on the size of the threat, reserved units may be deployed to engage hostiles in pursuit. Should we encounter a full lance of enemy mechs, we are to abort the operation and regroup at the dustoff site.

Our employer hasn’t had the resources to give us a full grasp of the situation. We’re running blind out here. The goal is to recover as much information as we can, and confirm enemy positions and territory before deploying the big guns.”

After answering your questions, he looked over everybody before speaking again.

“If that’s everything then move out and form up on me.”

>Sir yes sir
Everyone replied.

Quickly slipping into your cooling vest and making your way up and into your battle mech, the ramp deployed as other lances began marching out onto the planet surface. Sunlight could be seen pouring into the dropship as you powered up your mechs systems checking them one by one. With everything in order, you made your way outside and formed up to the right and a little behind Alisa in the back of the formation. Next to her was the commander sporting a Firestarter, and to the rear lefthand side was a mercury. You couldn’t identify the variants off the top of your head, and you didn’t have time to consider it as you all began to make your best speed towards the town.
The skys were clear, paying close attention to your visuals and your sensors, you followed your comrades into the unknown.

As a Mercenary, I want to make choices between being a poor guy that's going to get his team killed for his morals and a cutthroat mercenary that will kill people to ensure that enough salvage and money comes in to keep the company alive.

As the saying goes, "Kill the meat, save the metal."

the above pastebins will be included in future OP's. This is all completely experimental so don't be surprised if things change or get updated in the future.

The operation is underway. You and the rest of Delta lance makes its best speed towards NAV alpha, currently sitting at 2KM from your current position. The weather is calm as the landscape is covered in lush green hills with sparse amounts of trees and some scattered buildings. Sensors have yet to pick up on any foreign units, and you have yet to see any enemy forces firsthand, but you stay sharp and on the lookout as you make your approach.

After clearing the hills and trees, you find yourself on the outskirts of a small urban settlement. Rows and rows of small houses litter the area, small enough for you to see over but not in-between. Towards the center of town are a handful of 2 and 3 story buildings. Your commander gives the order to spread out and begin surveying the area as your lance mates all head off in different directions. The quicker we can get this done the less likely we are to run into any hostile forces after all.

You begin slowly weaving in and around buildings, inspecting them via sensor as you pass, contemplating your next move.

>Focus on the smaller buildings around town.

>Start making your way towards the larger buildings at the center of town to examine them first.

>put your efforts on attempting to find any hidden hostiles in the area before you do your scans. [roll 1d6 to determine sensor readings <best 2 of 3, TN = 9>. Time lost on failure. [Increase risk of reinforcements.]]

You started heading towards the center of town to scan the largest buildings in the area. The town seemed completely deserted. No civilians were in sight, and the streets were littered with the occasional abandon vehicles. A large number of homes had sustained damage from ballistic and missile weaponry from the shape and size of the damage.

As you made it within scanning range of the first 3 story building, you noticed a blip on your radar. An unidentified light vehicle was being picked up 300 meters past the other end of the structure, it wasn’t making any movements. You were unsure as to if you had been detected or not.

Without scanning the building you made your way around to the other side of the building to identify the radar contact. Once you made it to the other side of the building you saw yourself staring down a scorpion light tank. The tank ripped off a shot with its AC/5 <rolled 3, TN 9>, whizzing past your mech and striking the building behind you. The vehicle quickly threw itself into reverse and began to back away from your mech, turret fixed on your position.

The enemy was now most certainly aware of your presence, but appeared to be the only hostile in the area. It was the only unit being picked up on your sensors.

You quickly begin running down an adjacent street, using the buildings as cover while you switch on your coms saying.

The commander quickly replied, ”Roger Delta 3, hostile tanks in the area. Delta 2 is en route to your position, we’ll continue the operation in pairs. From here on out. Bring him down before they can radio someone.”

The hostile tank fired another barrage at your mech <rolled 8, TN 10>, as the shells soared overhead. You zigzagged through a nearby assortment of houses and found yourself positioned directly behind the enemy tank, well within striking distance. It’s turret was still fixed forward with no room to twist to face its rear.

You line up your shot and fire your weapon systems, hitting the tank squarely. <Rolled 9, TN 5>
The tank takes the full force of the weapons barrage as the rear end of the tank is blown apart, leaving the internal systems a smoldering wreck. Plumes of smoke pour out of the tank as bits of metal soar throughout the area, plinking off your mech as you hear the sounds of rubble and debris scattering across the area.
In one clean shot the tank had been dispatched, leaving it no opportunity to radio to anyone.

>Damage report: http://pastebin.com/4gbWzbFX

You slowly marched past the smoking heap, as you finished scanning the nearby building. There were no signs of weapons production or any internal movements, and your radar was only picking up your lancemate moving into your area.
You reported the target as destroyed and waited for your squadmate to catch up before moving on with the scanning. You could see it was Alisa’s mech making its way over towards you.

Instead of heading to the next tall structure, you start making rounds across the nearby area, checking your sensors for any signs of additional contacts that would be close enough to see the conflict.
As you were heading eastwards you picked up three more signatures on your radar, but scans indicated they were well beyond the city limits behind some distant hilly terrain and lightly wooded areas. Three light vehicle readings, identical to the last.. Most likely more scorpions. The rest of the city seemed to be clear as you didn't pick anything up on your radar sweep. You relayed the information to your commander and the rest of the lance.

“Roger that Delta 3. You shouldn’t go chasing down targets outside our area of operations. We’ve just about wrapped up our scans on the western side of town, we’ll start making our way over there to cover you while you finish your scans. Good work.

”Great! We’re almost out of here Nick! Let’s finish up here. Alisa cheerily chimed in.
So far so good, The mission was going off without a hitch so far. You managed to take down a hostile tank without so much as a scratch, and you located the remainder of the enemy’s position, Now if you could get these scans finished before they move in to check on their buddies things will be golden.

You positioned yourself behind a small house as close as you could to the hills the hostile tanks were behind, keeping a close eye on your sensors.
The moment those tanks would decide to move you would be ready for it. It wasnt much later that you picked up the rest of delta lance moving in on your location, as Alisa spoke over the radio.

"Almost finished here, scanning the last few large buildings now."

By that time, delta 4 and delta lead had made their way next to you, both facing the hill.

"After delta 2 finishes her sweep, we'll engage those tanks and evac with the recon data. Good work delta lance.." The commander said.

The operation was going without a single hiccup or setback. It didnt seem right.
If the job was going to be this easy, why employ mercs? Your employer surely had the resources to deal with a handful of tanks, but you decided you shouldnt go trying to bite the hand that feeds you.. Unless...

>Alisa shouldnt be on her own, move to regroup at her location. <your rear will be facing the tanks direction>

>hold your position ready to engage those tanks.

>"doesnt this seem a little fishy delta leader?"

>write in.

"Doesnt this seem fishy delta lead?" You said with a concerned tone.

"What do you mean delta 3?" He replied, as you continued.

"I mean, isnt our presance here overkill? We've only encountered 4 light tanks, and the town is completely abandoned.. Something just isnt adding up here."

Delta 4 then made a comment over the coms, his loud gruff voice accompanied with loads of static.
"Defenses or transport vehicals... I havent seen either... If they arent commited to holding these territories, then where are the transports to move their finished weapons?"

A long silence soon gave way to a shriek over the com system and loud explosions could be heard, and your mech trembled.
Twisting your torso towards the source of the noise your eyes were greeted with plumes of smoke, and the northmost 3story building was nowhere to be seen.
Your sensors began chirping as 4 new signatures appeared from the north moving at a quick pace towards Alisa's position.
At the same time the hostile tanks began advancing up the hill.

In the sudden burst of chaos, you didn't hear a word over coms as everyone stood silent.

>theres no time to waste, make your best speed to Alisa's coordinates.

>"Sir! What are our orders?!?!!"

>start falling back towards the dropship.

>attempt to take charge of the situation and issue orders. (Pick units and give commands) roll 2d6.

>write in.

>Write in: Link up with Alisa halfway and get more orders, use the smaller buildings as cover since the big ones are traps. Light mechs aren't taller than two stories and a pointy roof in the worst case.

I'll back this one up:

Those signatures could be other vehicles, or possibly other Battlemechs. Either way, a Thorn isn't well suited to handle any of those. Gotta get out of there and avoid any return fire as best we can.

Did none of you hear 'the shriek'? THAT MEANS INTENSE ECM JAMMING. It's 3025ish though, so probably has as limited range.

Recommend issue fallback orders to everyone.
"SIR FALLING BACK ON YOUR ORDERS SIR."
"DELTA 2, 4 YOU HEARD HIM, BACK TO THE DROPSHIP, SIR YES SIR.'
