It's the weekend. Not only that, but today has been deemed a safe day from the Darkworld. You should probably get around to asking how school staff predict which nights the Darkworld appears... is it a weather forecast, or something? Whatever, all that matters is that today is free of classes, free of monsters, and you're free to do whatever you like with any worry or stress.

Or so you believed.

There you were, enjoying a nice warm shower in the morning, a great way to start the day, when who should burst into the bathroom but one of the girls from Class 2. Not even one of the girls you know! A girl you don't think you've even shared two words with since you arrived!

You scream, panic and grab a towel to cover yourself, but it's too late. The girl runs out into the main room of your dorm, with you following close behind expecting an explanation.

"What are you doing here?!" you exclaim, fixing the towel around your waist.

"I'M SORRY! I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING!" the girl yells.

"Really?"

"NO, THAT'S A LIE! I SAW EVERYTHING!" She wails, close to tears.

You turn red as Ken bursts into the room after hearing all the commotion. "What's going on?" he asks.

You point the the girl and glare at Ken. "What is she doing in our room?"

"I asked Akemi to come over so she could fix our tv..." Ken mutters. "What did she do?"

"I HAD TO USE THE BATHROOM!" Akemi cries. "I HAD NO IDEA HE WAS SHOWERING!"

Ken sighs. "But Akemi, I told you Ryoji was in there and not to bother him... remember?"

Akemi's eyes widen in panic as she tries hard to recall. "Oh... maybe you did say that... b-but I wan't listening! I was thinking about kittens to whole time! I swear Ryoji, I didn't know! This is so embarrassing!"

You let out a low growl. "Be more careful the next time you wander into someone's private room!" you yell.

"Y-yes... I'll be going now!" she mumbles as she runs from the dorm, almost pushing Ken to the ground as she does.

Ken lets out a sigh. "Sorry about that, Ryo. Akemi's pretty absent minded, I should have expected something like this to happen. Still, it must suck knowing one of the girls caught a glimpse of little Ryoji..."

"Hey! There's nothing little about it!" you protest.

"Oh? Then maybe Akemi will tell stories about it to the class."

"Yeah, maybe she-WAIT, I DON'T WANT THAT!"

Ken laughs. "Yeah, but it happened, and you can't change that. What can you do?"

"There's only one thing to do, Ken..." you explain.

Okay, so your day free of stress wasn't off to a great start. But no matter, it's still morning and you have a lot of time ahead of you to make up for the unpleasantness. Dark Gate Academy can't crush your spirits, not today.

After getting dressed you meet with Kosuke and Rini in the school courtyard, under the shade of a tree.

"Apparently she had only come around to fix a tv, and then she walked in on him in the... wait, here he comes now..." Rini whispers as you approach.

Damn it, how did word travel so fast?

"Hey Ryoji," Kosuke greets you, barely able to contain a laugh. "How's it hanging?"

"I'm just ready to have a day that's free and easy," you reply, stretching out your arms. "Time to have some fun, you know? Act like we're in a normal school, with normal rules. Normal rules that we can break."

"Funny you mention that," Rini answers, "because here's our plan for the day. On weekends, we're allowed to travel into town, right? So I figured we should head there, and buy a bunch of stuff in order to have a huge barbecue right here on campus! It'll be fun, and it'll seriously piss off Akihito when he finds out. What do you say, Ryoji? You in?"

You raise and eyebrow in confusion. "How... how long were you waiting in there?"

"Long enough to hear everything! A Barbecue? On school grounds? Are you serious? That's strictly forbidden! Student's shouldn't be holding parties on school grounds to begin with, but students operating a grill that runs the risk of starting a small fire, or badly burning a student's skin should it be mishandled, and if you're using a charcoal grill, has even been linked to cancer? It's madness! I won't allow it!" She places her hands on her hips and glares at you.

"Come on Saki, it's the weekend." You scratch the back of your head. "We're allowed to have a little fun-"

"No, you aren't allowed! I just told you that it breaks several school rules! You just want to get in trouble, Ryoji! As if traumatising poor Akemi this morning wasn't enough..."

Saki lets out a very loud sneeze, and places her hand to her mouth.

"You okay?" you ask.

"Saki, you don't look very good," Kosuke mutters. "Have you come down with something?"

"It's not enough to stop me from taking you punks... ATCHOO!"

As if things weren't bizarre enough, Tekina burst out from the bushes and begins checking on Saki.

"What? Why were you there?!" you yell.

The school nurse grins. "I was studying Ryoji in his natural habitat, but it appears my duties as school nurse are required!"

Tekina places a hand to Saki's forehead. "Miss Kobashi, you are burning up! You've got a fever not doubt. You shouldn't be out and about in this condition!"

"A fever? That's nothing! I can stilll... ATCHOO!"

Tekina grabs Saki by the hand. "Come along now, we need to get you into a bed."

Saki struggles weakly as she is dragged off. "But... ATCHOO! I have to... ATCHOO! Stop the... ATCHOO! Delinquents! Noooooo!"

Saki and the school nurse become specks on the horizon as you quietly come to grips with how strange your life has become. Still, this means that today involves no classes, no monsters, and no Saki trying to get you in trouble. Today is looking pretty promising.

Kosuke yawns. "So, is there anyone else we want on our expedition into town? Or are we all set to begin Operation BBQ?"

"The weird Pirate girl, and a front row goody-two-shoes?" Rini asks. "Whatever, if you say so..."

You gather the others, and soon the five of you are venturing out beyond the academy gates. Dark Gate Academy rests atop a large hill, overlooking the rest of the town. The town itself is very small in comparison to the massive Academy, and mostly very quiet. Considering what happens in the area at night, it's no wonder that not many people choose to live here.

"This is so exciting! I haven't left the Academy in so long!" Nanami exclaims. "And now, me and my crew are setting sail, to ravage the town below! We'll do as pirates do, we'll pillage and r-"

"So this barbecue," Hiro interjects. "It's going to be an open thing, right? In the campus courtyard? You were a little hazy on specifics."

"What's it to you?" Rini fires back. "You want to report it all back to Akihito? You first row nerds are all a bunch of snitches."

Hiro raises his arms in defense of himself. "What? No! I just wanted to know more about what we're doing!"

Rini glares at him. "Don't think I'm not on to you! Saki's sick, so Akihito's sent another of his little pets to do his spying for him!"

"Saki's sick?" Hiro asks. "Oh dear, I hope it's not anything serious..."

"Stop being nice while I'm being suspicious!" Rini yells.

Kosuke steps in. "Now Rini, as Class President, it's my duty to inform you that antagonising one of your fellow students will not be toler..." he burst into laughter. "Sorry, I couldn't keep a straight face. Carry on."

"Crewmen, stop this in-fighting!" Nanami orders, "We need to focus on the enemy!"

"What enemy?" Rini replies, "We're going into town for barbecue supplies, you idiot!"

"You need help with that?" you ask as Hiro waves to grab your attention.

"Nah, I've got it!" Hiro shouts back with a cheerful smile. "Let's head back to the school, okay?"

As Nanami runs ahead to make pace with Hiro, you get to thinking. Sure she's a pain in the ass... but Saki's sick. Maybe you could get her something nice out of pity. If you be quick about it, nobody would have to know...

"Looking for something?" a voice asks from behind you. You turn around to see a frail, tiny old woman with a walking stick. She's adjusting a pair of oversized glasses as she tries to get a good look at you.

"Yeah..." you reply. "But it's not like that! We're just friends! Well, we aren't really friends, but..."

The old woman gives a low hum as she examines you further. "You're from that Academy, aren't you? The one at the top of the hill?"

"My Grandson used to go there... until..." Her voice trails off, but knowing the school, you can imagine what happened to her grandson. "Such a shame, I was just about to pass on this to him..."

She pulls out a small silver brooch, with an insignia of a tiny bee on it. "A family heirloom. You know... you seem like a nice boy. Perhaps you should take this. I have noone else to give it to, and it would make a lovely gift for your lady friend..."

"Please, just take it," the old woman says, placing the brooch into the palm of your hand and closing up your fist. "I don't wish to hold onto it anymore. Too many painful memories. Perhaps you can make some new ones."

The woman wanders off, leaving you alone. You place the brooch in your back pocket. You're stuck with it, but that doesn't mean you have to give it to Saki. You grab a nice looking card from the shelf, pay for it, and make your way back to the school.

Arriving in the school courtyard, you see that the barbecue is already underway, with Kosuke handing out burgers to a long line of your classmates. They managed to pull in a large crowd fairly quickly, you suppose there's just no beating the temptation of a good barbecue. Hiding the card in your jacket's inside pocket, you approach the rest of the crowd. As you do, you begin to hear one of the girls in class telling a story.

"So the way I heard it, Akemi drops by hoping to fix a television set, seeing as she's such a whiz with tech. But when she gets there, Ryoji greets her right out the shower, not even a towel on. And Ryoji says to her... 'Care to join me?' What a perv!" the silver haired girl relays. This story is starting to get out of hand.

The girl lets out a few disappointing tuts. "There's no need to spread false claims, Ryoji. Just own up to your mistake. And besides..." she points a finger at you and winks, "A boy like you shouldn't resort to such dirty tactics to attract girls."

You growl in frustration, as Kosuke calls you over and hands you a burger. "Don't mind Chihiro. Once she get's hold of some tasty gossip, nothing anyone can say will stop her from stretching it as much as possible."

"RYOJI!" a booming voice calls out, as a blonde boy in your class charges up to you. This can't be good.

"Is it true? You, Ryoji Shida, saw the one and only Akemi Ibushi in the nude?" he asks.

"What? That's the complete opposite of-"

"You must tell me? What were they like? Firm? Perky? Oh, how blessed you are, Ryoji! Each girl in this class is a delicate and budding rose, to see their full shape in their prime is amazing! How I would kill to see the beautiful form of Akemi... or better yet, that of Chihiro Toriyama, Rei Arisato, or the crown jewel... Sayeka Ohko! Modern day goddesses, each and every one! Helen of Troy herself would worship at the alter of their beauty!"

Kosuke sighs. "Calm down Isamu... but he does have a point Ryoji."

"I don't see why you're leaning so much towards Akemi-"

"She's only about the fifth best butt in class, and she might be dead last in the chest department. Poor girl's flat as a board."

You shake your head. "For the last time, I'm-"

"AKIHITO'S COMING! HIDE THE BARBECUE!" Rini yells out, and before you can finish your sentence, the whole group begins to frantically hide any evidence of the barbecue. Your mouth is full of burger, but you better hurry up and join them.

Akihito marches out into the courtyard, stern look on his face. Kosuke hides the grill behind a tree, and you shove your burger down your throat, finishing it in a single gulp before Akihito's in distance. While you're adept at acting casual, after years of experience, the rest of the class aren't so subtle, as they stand around as awkwardly and suspiciously as possible. Akihito glances across the group before addressing you.

"Just what is going on here?" Akihito demands to know. "Why is the entire class hanging out in the courtyard of the school on a weekend afternoon?"

Without hesitation, you answer. "Dance contest."

"Well, I... what?" Akihito is taken aback. "Dance... contest?"

Without any hint of irony, you continue, "Yeah, dance contests. They're the hip new thing. Good wholesome fun, and it keeps us all pretty active?"

"Huh... and that smell?" he asks, getting a whiff of the air.

"That's the classic smell of healthy sweat after a long hard day of busting moves to your hearts content. In fact, we were just about to start another round. Care to join us, sir?"

Akihito looks around the group, hoping that someone would eventually crack and confess to what's actually going on. Fortunately, nobody does. "Not now Ryoji... maybe some other time."

Akihito shuffles back to the main building, defeated, frequently looking over his shoulder to make sure you aren't doing anything suspicious the moment his back is turned. Once he returns to the school, you all breath a collective sigh of relief.

"That was close..." Kosuke mutters, "Now, someone get the fire extinguisher. A branch caught alight while we were hiding the grill."

After the fire's spread is prevented, at the cost of half the tree's leaves, the barbecue continues.

You can stick around and enjoy the barbecue for a little longer, now that Akihito's out of the way. You survey the group. Most of the class seem to be having fun, though you notice one outlier. A bespectacled member of the class is sitting isolated on a nearby bench, quietly listening to music while reading a book. What was his name again? Reiji or something like that?

You grab a burger and make your over to the bench. You offer it to the boy. "Want one?"

The boy looks up from his book and removes an earphone. "Excuse me? Sorry, I don't eat meat."

He returns his attention to the book. Regardless, you still try to make conversation. "So, what music you listening to?"

"Music? No, I don't listen to music. I'm listening to an audiobook."

You raise an eyebrow. "But you're already reading a book..."

Reiji nods. "Yes, I'm multitasking. I can see how the concept is alien to one with a mind as weak as yours. Exams aren't long away, and last time I just missed out on making the front row. But now there's an opening..."

"That's pretty cold. A guy died for that opening."

"Yes, it does sound rather callous, doesn't it?" Reiji replies. "Oh well." He places the earphone back in and returns to his book, ignoring you.

"Ryoji! It's good to see you!" You feel a tug on your shirt. You turn to see Satomi, the nurses lab assistant... the one that stabbed you.

"Agh! Get away!" you yell in fear, but Satomi just laughs it off.

"Oh Ryoji, are you still angry about the syringe incident! It's in the past! Besides, that sample allowed us to discover what you really are!"

Oh no... Satomi knows about your Darkworlder physiology. The teachers are willing to keep it a secret, but there's no stopping her from spreading this news to the rest of the class. And you thought the Akemi thing was bad for your reputation...

You grab her by the shoulders. "Okay, but Class 2 are not the masses. They don't need to know just yet, right? Besides, it's not smart to talk about this discovery without knowing all the facts, and Tekina says there's a lot more testing to do. Understand?"

Satomi pouts. "Oh... fine. I see what you mean. But in return, you need to do something for me..."

You're already dreading this. "What?"

"I want a date!"

You almost choke. "A date?"

Satomi nods. "Yes! A date... with Akio! He's the coolest guy in class! And he's so... dreamy!"

That sounds like a real challenge. You barely even know Akio, and what you've of him tells you he isn't going to agree to a date with a science geek. He's got a real ego, and only seems to have eyes for Sayeka.

Well... damn. Can't ask him to go on a date with Satomi while he's currently sucking face with a much more popular girl. He and Chihiro are probably just messing around, though. You can ask Akio some other time.

"I have to say, the barbecue was a complete success," Kosuke mutters, flipping the burgers. "What's your plans for after this?"

You pause for a brief moment. "Eh, I'll probably just go back to the dorm and relax."

"Sounds good. Have fun, man."

You feel the card in your inner pocket. Still there.

You grab a burger, "for the road", from Kosuke and make your way to the nurse's office. You knock on the door, and Tekina is quick to answer.

"Oh, Ryoji! Are you here to carry out some more experiments?" she asks.

"No way. I'm just here to visit Saki."

Tekina pouts. "If you say so. She's lying in bed over there. It's very kind of you to visit, Ryoji. You're a very good boyfriend."

You feel a twitch in your eye. "She's not my... Oh, screw it."

You approach Saki's bed, and she sits up, gloomy look on her face. Her nose is now bright red, and her voice is nasally. "What are you doing here? I thought you'd be enjoying your barbecue."

"I thought I would pay a visit, bring you some food," you reply, handing her the burger.

Saki stares at the burger intently for a moment, before dropping it in a trashbin next to her bed. "That's an illegal barbecue burger, and I'll have no part in it. You can't get me to abandon my morals so easy... easy... ATCHOO!"

She sneezes once again, and reaches for a box of tissues. She presses the tissue against her face and blows her nose. "Is that all you came for. To tempt me with your immoral meat?"

She's ill, so you're going to let the innuendo slide. Instead, you pull the card out of your pocket. "I was also going to give you this."

"Get well soon..." she reads, before opening up the card to see what's written inside.

"It's a card," you explain.

Saki growls. "No, I don't understand. What's the catch? What kind of trick are you trying to play?"

You frown. "What makes you think there's a catch?"

"Because of course there is! ATCHOO! You... you expect me to believe that you just gave me a card without any other motives? To be nice? A delinquent like you?" Saki shakes her head. "I'm on to your game... this is stolen, isn't it? You're trying to gift me a stolen item without my knowledge, aren't you?"

"No!" you yell. "Geez, I try to do one good thing for you, and all you can do is scrutinise it! Get your head out of your ass, Saki! Can you stop being paranoid for one second and admit that maybe I'm capable of being nice sometimes?!"

"No, you can't trick me, delinquent!" she yells, before tossing the card into the trashbin. She crosses her arms defiantly and glares at you.

You sigh. "Fine, be that way. I'm outta here."

"Don't be a stranger!" Tekina adds in a cheery voice as you pass by her.

"Shut up," you mumble as you storm out of the nurse's office. Just as you're about to close the door completely shut behind you, you turn your head and peek through the cracks. You catch a glimpse of Saki leaning over the edge of her bed, and pulling the card out of the trash. She also stares at the burger, considering for a moment, before shaking her head and leaving it disposed.

You shut the door and make your way down the hallway. Your stress-free day has gone mostly according to plan, minus the yelling match with Saki moments ago.

You didn't get to enjoy your shower this morning due to unfortunate events, so you might as well give it a second try. And besides, the hot-springs next to the school dorm have been calling out to you since you first arrived in the school, just begging for you to try them.

When you arrive at the spring, you a very pleased to find nobody inside. Good news, you might finally get some much needed privacy. You strip off and leap into the water, creating a huge splash as you do. You lean back and let out a deep breath, sinking deeper into a relaxing state. Today was a good day. Sure, there were some challenges... a rumour spread up about you, a few of your friends don't get along, you have to arrange a date for some nerd to keep her quiet, and you dealt with more than a few conflicting feelings regarding a girl who you thought you hated, who happens to hate you too. Worst of all, you've begin to feel a little curious regarding Nanami's romantic novel. But overall, you enjoyed yourself.

Days like this don't come along very often, and there's no telling when the next one will be. From tomorrow on, it's right back to Crazy experiments, battling demons for survival, questioning your very status as a human being and, of course, schoolwork. In this Academy, you rarely have time to breath, which is why actually getting some time to chill out and enjoy yourself is so important. Not just to you, but to the entire class... maybe that's why Saki was more aggressive than usual. She really missed out today.

Oh well. In your books, today was a rousing success, and now that you're comfortably residing in the hot springs, it can only get better from here.

Until bubbles start forming in the water, and you are covered in a huge splash as Akemi bursts from under the water. It seems the airhead was having fun seeing how long she could hold her breath. She wipes the water from her eyes and notices you. "Oh hey Ryoji!" she says with a smile. "When did you get... here..."

It's then that the two of you notice something. You're naked, she's not. Akemi lets out an embarrassed scream.

You lean back, bashing you head against the edge of the pool in frustration. "OH COME ON!"

Turning to other things, guess we have a lot of issues to juggle. Top Ass in Class needs to trust her fellow students more, Sakdere to lighten up, Assistant SCIENCE!!1! (Tekina is Nurse SCIENCE!!1!) needs dating help, but I bet is barking down the wrong tree, Peakaboo needs to get over our nudity, and everyone else has a whole host of problems we're likely only going to learn about in time. I'm intrigued.

I'll try to refrain from using the nicknames too much. Lest it get too old. But I'll keep coming up with them as the events happen.

Serriously though, I'm really looking forward to seeing what everyone else's deal is. I know you Booker, you've got some hidden backstories up the yinyang that you just can't wait to reveal.
