Potential Rivals? Friends? Starter Pokemon Showdown

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as circumstances warrant.

Combat mechanics are up in the air. Suggestions are welcome. I want to try to move it a bit away from just having video game mechanics of trading blows.

Call me out on a mistake and receive a suggestive picture.

Wouldn't Gobb's perfect accessory be a scarf?
>>
>>662606
Gobbs needs a bow tie, and maybe a full on suit if we can afford it eventually
>>
>>662591
Gonna second this. There are enough waifu quests out there.

And while I'm not a huge fan of bullying, I don't mind it as much as long as it isn't overwhelmingly prevalent/constant. Everything in healthy doses.
The way people keep sperging out about bullying makes it sound like a bully quest with Pokemon tacked on to it.
>>

I agree, more scarves for Gobble.

Laki puts a hand on her wide hip. “Don’t expect me to take it easy on you just because you’re a kid.”

You wouldn’t exactly call Jane a kid. She comes off as a seasoned war vet in a teenage girl’s body.

Jane and her Tyrogue take a casual but ready stance. “I was going to say the same to you. Don’t get cocky. You’re not that much older. A type advantage isn’t that big a deal.”

“Want to put some money on it?” Laki names an amount.

Jane adjusts her neck. “If you’re okay with losing that much. But don’t say I didn’t warn you. Remember, you’re the one challenging me.”

They have an intense standoff. The match will begin any second.

Polu leans in close. “What do you think about all this?”

Well
We're good at cooking and fashion
We're naive and have bad luck
Wehave a mystery box in the form of a Pokemon egg as our special item
Gobble decided to make us male instead of voting to escape the mass shitstorm of samefags and salt
We caught a munchlax after we gave it food to deal with mankeys
Also we didn't chose a starter
The professor seems extremely incompetent as he booked 7 different trainers on the same day at the same time and only had 3 Pokemon on hand

“It could be cool, but to be honest, I don’t think they’re fighting for a good reason.”

The others give you a brief glance to consider your words. Hana, Valerie, and Polu just fought her, but might be thinking about what lead to that instead of their defeat.

“Chatot! Use Chatter!” Kali seems to know a bit about this Pokemon. You guess that makes sense, since her aunt had one. But who knows what this particular one knows? Maybe she’s just assuming.

“Fake Out!”

Tyrogue moves so fast that it appears in front of Chatot, giving it a hard slap. It’s hard enough to make it flinch!

“Every time.” Polu cringes, then holds onto his Pokeball “Just means we need to get stronger. I let you down, buddy, but I promised we’ll go places. We’ll crash like a wave.” He leans on his surfboard. “If you want to. Chilling is fine, too.”

“Chatter!”

Chatot quirks it’s head.

“Ugh. Beer money!”

“Beer money! Beer money!” Chatot attacks with impressive sound waves.

Tyrogue is blown back. But it lands on it’s feet. “Now! While it’s low to the ground!”

Tyrogue runs and leaps up a railing. He grabs Chatot out of the air and holds it in a tight grip.

“Chatot! Get loose!”

“Beer money! Beer money!” Chatot yells, loosing at attack wildly. One of those waves is headed for your group! Keira isn’t close enough, but you and the others are right in the middle. Gobbs is chewing on a flower off to the side. You set the egg down to the side too, thank goodness.

You can’t let anyone be hurt! You run to the front to block it.

You pass Valerie, who ungracefully lowers her umbrella as a shield in what looks like an instinct more than a thought.

You leap over the surfboard that Polu is lowering. He’s using it as a shield for Lillipup. He yells to you as you go beyond his reach. "Bro!"

What surprises you is Hana. She’s side-by-side with you for a brief second, confused at you being up here and actually passing her. You only briefly get a vision of her legs as her loose pant legs fly up in the motion.

Your vision is knocked sideways. No wait, that’s you.

Ooph.

You’re not sure what happened, but you find yourself caught in Hana’s arms and both of you on the ground. But you don’t feel like you’re solidly on the ground. No wait, you are, but the sky is spinning.

“That was very brave.” She tells you in a whisper as the clouds twirl above her.

“Are...are my clothes okay?”

She looks confused, then giggles. “They look good to me. I mean... they’re fine. Not fine fine, but they’re not ripped.”

She helps you get up. You’re still spinning and only realize how soft of a pillow her chest was after you’re off of it. Huh. Is your sense of balance way off or did she just almost lift you entirely with one arm?

“Thanks for catching me.”

She avoids eye contact. “Sorry I wasn’t faster. I didn’t want you to get hurt.”

You stretch and move your muscles. “Nah. I feel gr-” Oh no. You’re still really confused. You barf as you stumble backwards and fall right into a puddle.

Why couldn’t you just have died instead.

She helps you up again and her, Pulo, Keira, assure you that it’s fine. Valerie does too, but from a pace away. You feel gross and embarrassed. And this is your favorite shirt, too. You smile though. Everyone else is putting in the effort to try to not make you feel bad. You don’t want to let them down.

Tyrogue is still confused, but it’s wearing off. Chatot managed to get loose in all the commotion.

“Look what you did!” Laki yells at Jane.

“Me? I didn’t tell Chatot to attack!”

Laki grumbles. She glances at you out of the corner of her eye. Even you can see the guilt in her eyes. “Whatever. Call it a draw?”

“I. Don’t. Draw.”

Laki looks furious. Beyond words.

Keira leans in close to her. “Why don’t you surrender? It doesn’t matter.”

Laki whispers out of the side of her mouth so that only Keira can hear. But you catch it too. She doesn’t have enough money. Laki looks frustrated more with herself than anyone, but this is a direct result of her own actions.

You really don’t want this to keep going. “Hey Gobble, are you hungry?”
He turns around quicker than you’d expect him to be able to.

You take out the baco bread that Jacob gave you. “Here! Oops! I’m still confused!” You toss it into the ring. Gobble runs for it, bowling over Chatot and Tyrogue, but not really hurting them.

“What are you doing!” Laki and Jane yell in unison. They hear the other and go back to exchanging daggers through their eyes.

“Whatever! Let’s finish this, Tyrogue! Use-”

“That’s enough.” Professor Palm’s voice booms from the elevated railing on the side. “The match is over. Gobble interfered.”

“The professor is right,” Jacob’s smooth voice pierces the tension. “ It’s not a win, or a loss, or a draw. It’s fouled.”

“Now, it’s getting late. You’re all welcome to stay at the lab if you’d like or at least wash up. I recommend you take this chance. There aren’t many fully equipped pokecenters in this region.”

“Yet.” Jacob adds.

The two men start walking back.

Jane storms over to you. “Are you okay?” There’s just the faintest hint of concern behind the anger.

You look down at your barf covered shirt and puddle soaked pants. It's just clothes. You feel fine. And it's nice that she asked. Plus with your luck this sort of thing isn't uncommon. “Yeah! Thanks.” You give a thumbs up.

“Good!” She pushes you back into the puddle. She calmly walks by as you fall, like she just swatted a fly.

You look up to see Laki offering you a hand up this time. She smiles like a demon and pulls you up. “I’m going to make you work that off.”

“How about I whip us up some food and we go exploring?”

The group exchanges some looks. Everyone seems up for it.

“Alright!” You high five Gobble. He's confused. High fives aren't food.

The professor is more than happy to let you use the building and even supplies the food. He says it’s the least he can do since dropping the ball with the Pokemon. You shower, change and quickly prepare some picnic food.

Hana offers to help. And what a help she is! You swear you just turned your back for a second and she already cut up everything that needed cutting while humming the theme to some old TV show.

You’re going to carry the baskets, but Laki insists.

“So! Where are we adventuring to?” Valerie says, primming her hair. You recognize her purse as being a brand name worth more than a small airplane.

You head up the mountain path. It’s a long trail the slowly goes uphill. But you don’t mind. You’re still full of energy from all the excitement of the way. Gobbs seems like like a lot of the games you play with him. At least, anything rhythm based. You do this little high-five fist bump thing and you keep adding steps.

The others have their Pokemon out at following as well. Keira’s Nincada seems to creep out Valarie, and to a lesser extent, Laki. Hana and Polu don’t mind. But it also seems like, Polu, Hana, and Laki give Keira a bit more space. Like a respect thing.

The climb starts to slow down a bit. Keira asks Hana to carry her. She gives her a piggy back ride, but looks incredibly uncomfortable.

Valerie stops the group. “Do you smell that?”

Several bright lights glow close by in the forest. There’s a sharp burning smell. Not just wood, but burning mildew and things too.

You and the others stare in that direction. Then some Pokemon start pouring out. Some you recognize, like weird Ratatas and you’re pretty sure a Pikachu. Others you don’t. They’re running away from the red glowing Pokemon. As you get closer, you see they’re coming off the rocks and onto the forest floor.

“They’re going to make a fire.” Keira warns.

You take out your Pokedex. Slugma, huh? Its body is made of magma. If it doesn't keep moving, its body will cool and harden.

“Come on, Gobbs!” You move forward “Let’s push them back.”

“He’s right.” Keira steps up beside. “We can’t let them keep coming this way. It’s going to mess up the balance.”

Polu nods and takes up a position. “Aren’t they supposed to be boxed in?”

Hana points up the path. “There!”

You have to squeeze your eyes, but you can see it in the darkness. There are rocks piled up along a path, but there’s a break in it. The Slugma look like they spilled out of that.

Uh oh. There’s a larger one there too. It looks like their leader. It looks confused about it’s new surroundings. That’s what’s causing this problem.

>Have Gobbs try to push one back up there

Gobbs can take a hit if he has to, especially considering he probably has Thick Fat. We should also point out that the leader is disoriented in case the others haven't noticed.

>>663985
We're going to be splitting up soon, so that should resolve that. I agree that having a group of like seven people on a consistent basis would be a bad idea. We're probably just going to be down to us, Keira, and Laki, if general consensus is anything to go by. Although Hana tagging along would also be cool.

>>Have Gobbs attack their leader. Knock him out and the others should calm down
>>
>>663944
Quests are composed of hundreds of little scenes, and it's obvious to me that Gobble is much better at distilling each scene down to the important, enjoyable to read bits than the first quest. This quest is more interesting than the first on an equal thread number basis, or comparing thread to thread. Is the plot immediately apparent in this quest? No. I suppose I meant the writing is more enjoyable or good rather than the story. An incorrect word choice on my part; sorry about that.
>>
>>663983
>You and Gobbs will work on clearing burnable stuff away from them

I get the feeling we're going to need help with Magcargo.

>>663983
>Have Gobbs attack their leader. Knock him out and the others should calm down

>You and Gobbs will work on clearing burnable stuff away from them
Have the ranged and less-flamable pokemon handle the living magma bubbles.
>>
>>663983
>You and Gobbs will work on clearing burnable stuff away from them

What we really need to do is lure the magcargo back into the pen, but what does a magcargo even like?
>>
>>664010
I agree. Having followed the first quest since around the halfway point, Gobble has absolutely improved since then. This quest's setting is really cool so far, and like I said, I think this cast is more interesting than the first one.

It's still early, so yeah, the plot hasn't picked up yet, but I really like where things are going so far.
>>
>>664010
i'll agree that the vignette's we've had so far are nicely done, but we need a solid goal or anons will lose focus and we'll pretty much do nothing.
>>
>>663983
>>You and Gobbs will work on clearing burnable stuff away from them
>>
>>664020
Thing is, that's literally only Chatot right now and maybe Togepi if it gets lucky with a Metronome. And as far as less flammable goes, most of the group's pokemon are neutral or outright weak to fire, Munchlax at least has the potential to resist it.
>>
>>664035
>>664030

I really see where you guys are coming from; it's nice to see such a passionate fan base. Really speaks to the whole experience with Gobble

I'm looking forward to future improvement, and this quest being even better than the last!

Laki and Hana run up the hill and start putting most of the rocks back. They aren’t closing the whole thing, just plugging most of the holes in the line of boulders. There will be a clear path for them to be able to go back to.

“Careful, Aron!”

“You too, Lillipup!”

Polu and Valerie direct their Pokemon, keeping a safe distance.

“Gobbs! Let’s go for their leader!”

The small Munchlax nods. You hope his thick layer of fat will protect him.

Wait. What moves does he know? You pick up your Pokedex again. Let’s see...

“Metronome!”

Gobble nods and faces his opponent. His fingers waggle back and forth. Left and right. Left and right. Then he has a sudden flash of inspiration and attacks!

He sticks his hands out and starts rapidly attacking with his palms like a sumo wrestler.

“Dude! That’s Arm Thrust!”

Marcargo is taken by surprise from the attack. It pushes it back and makes it angry. It leans back and then fires a flame attack. When it hits Gobble, little bits of fire spark off of him.

Gobble doubles over from the hit, but stands back up straight. As if he wants to say “that’s all you got?”

I guess just beating it up enough might make it retreat, but if it is the leader of the Slugma seeing it heading back up the mountain might make the others stop and follow.

“Try Amnesia!”

Gobble turns to you, then his face blanks.

That’s supposed to happen, right?

The Macargo is really mad at being ignored. It hits Gobbs with a strong blast of fire. You’re amazed that he can take that punishment. Macargo fumes!

“Hang in there!”

Just as you’re yelling that, Macargo is attacked from the side by a rock. Then another. And another!

It’s that rock Pokemon!

“Looks like we’ve got a friend!” Polu shouts. “Yeah, little guy!”

Macargo is on the defensive now. Or at the very least, distracted

“Metronome! Again!”

Gobble nods. He waggles his fingers back and forth again and again, summoning up a random move. You take out the pan in your bag, just in case.

He waggles and uses some sort of rock move. You’re not sure which one, but rocks start dropping on the Fire Pokemon from above! They hammer down hard. You think this is what they call super effective, because it’s knocking out Slugma in a single hit!

The large one rears back. It’s still getting ready for one more attack!

But your rock friend attacks too. He pounds it from the side with more rock blasts, finishing it.

The various slug Pokemon, having an extra set of rocks in their path and no more will the fight, slowly work their way back. Hana and Laki work together to push the last boulder in place.

Every takes a bit of a breather. Gobble brushes himself off and plops next to you. He was fighting above his weight class and he's got very little left.

Polu is the first to talk. “You know guts, we might get a shard for this!”

“A shard?”

Keira pops up in front of you from out of nowhere. “A shard is a formal recognition of helping the community. They’re given to people and Pokemon that do something to help out. There’s a unique type of stone on each island, so each one is different.”

“So, it’s like badges?” Valerie says, petting her Lillipup.

Laki rolls her arm. Pushing those boulders must have been tough. “Well. It’s pretty close. We do have gyms too, though.”

“Shards come from the Great Split. They’re sacred.” Keira’s eyes are lit up.

“And if you get one from each major island, you’re recognized and honored. Your name and tookoo is put in the Eelilee caves.” Polu helps.

“I’ve only helped prepare it,” Keira explains, very excited. “It’s... I can’t explain it.”

“Isn’t that your job?” Hana’s voice is equal parts playful, self-conscious, and teasing. She shies away right after in case she stepped over a line. Keira doesn’t seem to mind though.

On a scale from 1-10, Keira is best girl. Prove me wrong. You can't.
>>
>>664635
Can't argue with that

“What if someone buys one, or finds one?

“Nobody is going to sell one, bro.” Polu’s voice is friendly, but there’s a warning in it. Some people might be really offended at that even being asked.

“Not a local, anyway.” Laki takes off her windbreaker. “There’s a stream nearby, right?”

“But finding one is different. You’ll only find one if the islands want you to.” Keira pokes your nose. You think her smile is cute, but that paint makes it hard to tell if she’s being friendly or smug or what. You keep your eyes on her face though, so that’s a win.

“Is everyone okay with making camp there?”

The group looks around. It’s as good as any place. And it’s really dark. Everyone sort of passively agrees.

You turn to Roggenrola. “Thanks for the help. Does this mean you want to join my team?”

Gobble perks up. He’s interested in the answer.

The little rock guy makes a pose.

“He wants to explain something to you,” Keira says. “He doesn’t plan to evolve at all. He says it makes you slow and you can’t fit in good spots. And that a lot of others he knows became lazy after.”

“You can tell all of that?” Valerie is amazed.

Keira shrugs.

“That’s cool. I don’t want to change you. That’s why I invited you.”

He really approves of that answer. You can see it on his, uh, face.

Munchlax stands in his way and stares him down.

Roggenrola looks right back.

Gobbs grunts. Roggenrola jumps up in excitement and determination.

“Alright!” You leap up.

The group laughs. Laki even shoots you a fun smile. Enthusiasm is infectious.

You take it easy for the night. Everyone’s still a little awkward and doesn’t know each other that well, but most of that has faded away thanks to the fight earlier. And camping out here and your enthusiasm helps too.

Laki was right about the stream. You manage to wash your face and get some fresh water, then you baby your egg some more.

“Hey, Soft Hands.” Laki calls out to you in the warm, thick night air. “How are you feeling?”

You shrug. “Good?”

“Good.” She makes a motion like she’s going to push you in the stream, but doesn’t. You’re holding an egg. “You flinched. Ah! you’re so fun to tease. You’re like that Lillipup.” She tussles your hair. “Look. I owe you an apology. I lost my temper twice now, and both times you paid for it.”

>It’s a good lesson for her about her temper

>>

hell they can be modified Rocky Helmets, so things take damage for daring to attack his noble visage!

also there's a funny set you can do with low level (and under 20 max hp)sturdy mons... where you have a berry juice, recycle and a bunch of hazards up and the mon is basically immortal cause it keeps going up to full with the berry juice and then gets another with recycle, not really practical but something interesting.

“Want to hold it?” You present the egg. You know she didn’t intend to knock it out of your hands before.

She looks genuinely touched. She slowly takes it out of your hand. “You’re too trusting, Soft Hands.” She holds it close and keeps her eyes on it, like it could try to wiggle out of her grip at any time.

“Maybe you could pick on me less? Or maybe stop calling me Soft Hands?”

She smiles. “Then toughen up those hands. You’ve got to earn things here.” She considers her words. “There I go again. We’re still cool, right?”

You nod. Of course. “Let’s hug it out. Grandpa always told me a good hug can cure anything.”

She smiles, shakes her head, and gently puts down the egg. “Why not? It’s been a long day.”

The stream and rocks you’re both on are a little awkward for height. You can hear her heartbeat through her sarashi. “On the plus side, this is a good lesson about your temper.”

Something changes. A sense of danger. Maybe it’s in her heartbeat. You don’t hear or see anything, but you can feel it. Before you know it, she has you pinned down. Her powerful legs wrap around your waist to keep you from getting up as she tickles you without mercy. “Take it back!”

You can’t. You can’t even say anything through the laughing and struggling. You look up and her smirk through teary, laughing eyes and even you can’t tell if you’re having fun or not.

You crawl back to camp, exhausted and happy. Gobbs is there, failing hard at teaching your new Pokemon how to play your little handshake fistbump game.

Huh, he needs a name, doesn’t he?

>Surgeon Joy: Dark type Gym Leader.
Rather cold and calculating for a Joy. She knows the weak points of most pokemons, and specializes in increasing crit hit chance. She doesn't think a trainer should move on to the league if they can't deal with her damage output.

I also imagined an E4 as a gauntlet, but that might not work with the quest format where we can rest and prepare between matches. It would be more for a game, but here goes anyways.

>Region's Head Ranger: Flying type.
Specializes in speed. Uses fast attacks to take out the opponent quickly. Mainly uses increased evasion for defense. Might be busy mapping out new routes.

>Archeologist and fossil expert: Ghost type.
Uses pokemon with Pressure and moves like Grudge and Spite to tire out the opponent. I got the idea from Twitch plays randomized FireRed, where Lorelei was a ghost type and ended up being the toughest because of this. Lowers accuracy for defense. Studies ancient spirits that may still linger to fossils.

>Head Nurse Joy: Normal type.
Specializes in high health and healing moves. Will further tire out the opponent, except through tanking. Runs the region's pokecenters.

And after all this, the E4 leader would be a poison type and piles on status effects on a tired and beaten party. Then there's the champion with a healthy and balanced party after that.

I personally don't have any problem with the level of sexual tension, but if you want to dial it back, that's also fine. It hasn't seemed too excessive for the most part, and there are plenty of cute girls to be found, so some occasional teenage boy awkwardness is to be expected. Especially with best girl Keira running around in body paint and a skirt.

Anyway, thanks for running, Gobble. It was great as usual.

>>
>>665569

>>
>>665733
Well it is just theorizing on what we can do. The example Gobble used was a Bellsprout that countered the shit out of attacks. Also get better taste, Best Rock is best rock.
>>
>>665733
We don't necessarily have to become a battler, challenge the league, etc.
Honestly I'd prefer it if we didn't.
We can become a breeder, coördinator, open a restaurant, etc.
>>
>>665733
Not to mention worst base stats of all pre evolution rock types, he could have a half decent movepool I guess, better pray Mace is a god among 1 foot tall 40lbs rocks.
>>
>>665733
I also strongly dislike the breed.

Roggenrola's entire line is shit.

HOWEVER, that doesn't mean Best Rock is shit.

We can always just use him as a bowling ball, basically a pet Pokemon while we use Gobbs for the actual fighting, because Gobbs is actually good.

I'm pretty confidant that if we do use Best Rock, he will evolve one way or another though. Whether he can't contain his energy and needs to evolve for his own good or he evolves in order to rescue us from something that's gonna slap our shit, it'll happen. We just need to wait until he's comfortable without forcing the issue.
>>
>>665742
Instead of evolving at "level 25" it will evolve when it needs to.
>>
>>665744
Since when did Pokemon Quest grow levels? I don't know why you're telling me that as if I'm not aware.

Yeah, he will.

As for the evolution that results from him being traded, really depends on how comfortable he is with his second form. If he evolves once, he'll probably be willing to do it again.
>>
>>665733
I'm not a fan either but he could be very dangerous if we give him the destiny treatment. Have him set up with stealth rocks, hide on or around them, Dig under or around them. If we add a sandstorm to all of that it'd be very hard to keep track of him. Also last ditch dig explosions
>>
>>665551
>>665556
Laki's definitely the one we've spent the most time talking to, so we've gotten to know her a bit better than the rest. Another conversation or two and Keira will probably seem just as great.

I still like her best. I just want to find out more about what her deal is.

Clearly the solution is to have Laki, Hana, and Keira all join our party and have those three be our mainstays, because they're clearly the best three, no matter which order you want to put them in.

>>665601
Going full lewd would get old, yeah, but I think what we've got so far is probably alright. For all the talk the threads have about the girls, the actual portion of in-character posts that reference anything sexual is pretty low. You probably don't need to worry about it too much.

I think Laki would want to make most of the decisions but after our conversation here she might feel a bit guilty about always making decisions for the group and would try to get everyone's opinion more often or let other people make those choices. Hana and Keira would come along because they're too chill to want to hang out with Jane and Valerie, them being so high strung.
Herb will end up being the team's Brock, cooking, sewing (because anyone into fashion knows how to sew), feeding wild Pokemon.
Keira and Hana will be mostly just there. Not to say they'll be boring but they seem like the kind to keep to themselves more often than not. Keira will be our encyclopedia on the region since she's a priestess and knows all about the areas customs. Hana is still a bit of a mystery but I feel like we'll eventually find out more about her and her story will be something that she needs help to get over or we'll power-of-friendship her back to being happy

Group 2: Polu, Jane, Valerie
Polu will be the down to earth guy that has to deal with 2 girls that are pretty in-your-face about everything.
I'm betting Polu is going to be the one getting this group out of trouble that the other 2 get them into. I feel kind of bad for the dude, but Polu seems like the kind of guy that would actually enjoy doing this kind of stuff, he's just a helpful dude.

Thoughts?

Jane seems more like a solo player to me.
>>
>>665985
>>665978
Maybe we'll travel with all of them at some point, not all at once, just whoever we meet at the time.

The only one I see being a fixed companion at this point is Laki and perhaps Hana. We'll see how Gobble plays it.
>>
To be honest I kind of want to be the solo player

Everyone would get equal development and we get to spend a good amount of time being /comfy/ with our Pokemon
>>
>>665998
Laki seems like she'd want to keep an eye on us, plus I think she likes us.

The others will probably rotate out
>>
>>665978
>Keira and Hana will be mostly just there. Not to say they'll be boring but they seem like the kind to keep to themselves more often than not.

Nah, I think we just haven't had a chance to really talk to either of them much. Laki's just so happened to be the one we interacted with up until now, so it's easy to see her as the more outgoing one by comparison.

>Group 2: Polu, Jane, Valerie

Jane doesn't strike me as a team player, so I doubt she'll be on a team to start out.

>>665998

I think we'd be missing out on a lot if we didn't bring Keira along for her lore knowledge. Also, lot of players (myself included) seem to like her a lot, so I think we'll probably be seeing a lot of her.
>>
>>665978
>Valerie, them being so high strung.

Why is she high strung?

Im kinda wanting to go solo until we compete in our first contest/gym battle/whatever, get a feel of want we want to do before we get stuck with waifu island adventure (with pokemon).

Sir, I can't help but notice that your gauntlet idea has us fight:

>1. Elite 4 Member
>2. Elite 4 Member
>3. Elite 4 Member
>4. Elite 4 Member
>5. Elite 4 Leader
>6. Champion.

Something seems off here. It might have something to do with having to fight the Elite 4 5 times before facing the champion.
>>
>>666329
First one is specified as a gym leader, next 3 are 3/4 E4, then there'd be one more and a champeen

The first one is a gym leader. I think I would prefer what we had in the first quest, but maybe with less time between the fights.

so... at the risk of inciting rage:
what are your thoughts on the 7th gen starter mid-stage evo's?

>>
>>668408
Six would be ideal.
>>
>>668454
Mentioned them last thread, hate Popplio, meh Litten, like Owl. Owl would fit the most if we had to get one, but I would prefer not to.

Rowlet is the only one not going in the box for me.

Don't really like them, but then again none of the mid forms have ever really been good. some have been just ok
>>
>>668454
I think there meh
It confirms that the leaked mons were at some point a thing
But I think rowlets mid-evo is too far off from the concept
Popplios evos seem to line up but I'm sad that they abandoned the clown theme
I'm fine with litten as long as lucha litten isn't a thing
>>
>>668454
The mid stages suck. But the kitten and owl's first forms are cool.

I'm not too worried. Mid evolutions don't really matter anyway.

>>
>>668495
How would that even work
If this was anything else I might agree with you
But this is Pokemon
Most moves have a random chance to hit
There are random status effects
RNG has a very important spot in Pokemon
It wouldn't be the same without it
>>
>>668506
>>668532
Should the dice be changed?
>>
>>668548
We have talked about it before. The most solid thing so far is that high skill trainers may negate crits in some way and that the better the trainer the more dice they have.

I could also see some statuses being nerfed or changed around if people wanted. Like Paralyze instead of not allowing someone to act to just remove a die from their pool or something.
>>
>>668548
In what way is the system bad?
There is no current reason to change the dice
At least give a reason for you wanting change
>>
>>668221
Yeah.

Again, I cannot overstate the fact that we need not necessarily go for the championship. We've done that once, and it was great. Let's do something else great this time around. Something entirely unrelated, as long as it involves some Pokemon and some lewds.

I honestly don't even want to battle all that much in this quest, but explore, use Pokemon for utilities like travel, passing otherwise unpassable terrain, cooking, sewing (we need a Leavanny, Gobble, you hear?), etc. Find a different purpose. Someone else in our party can do that champion thing. To put it in other words, I kinda wanna play a side character, rather than a main character, but have the main close to us. We could play the Brock to this quest's Ash... or Ashley I guess. We can hold our own against whatever hilariously bad-at-battling evil team this region has (I'm sure Gobble didn't plan to copy team Skull), but otherwise aren't really that competitive or agressive.
>>
3 3d10s best dice system.
>>
>>668567
I feel like John is the type of guy that would try things once. So we could end up pressured into trying the gyms by the others, maybe do the anime promise thing about all of us trying the challenge.

I personally want try at least one contest if Gobble does them like the show. More style and battle combined as opposed to just doing moves at a wall.
>>
>>668567
Agreed. There's no reason to go turbo-ace-trainer this time around. Plenty of other things to do and explore.
>>
>>668567
We could collect shards and get honored. If we get one for preventing a forest fire we can probably get others for doing misc quests/jobs/helpful stuff for islands.
>>
>>668579
Why d10?
>>
>>668579
I'm not sure if we just didn't do enough set up for stuff before. But having a concrete confirmation that setting things up could grant bonus dice or a flat bonus could incentivize doing planning in battles. I feel like Gobble would provide the trickier plans in battles 9/10 times.
>>
>>668567
The only problem I see is that battles are most of the fun

Contest are fucking boring

Being a Pokemon ranger seems interesting
>>
>>668598
But what if contest are battles? Because I don't think anyone that ever mentioned wanting to do them was talking about the game versions.
>>
Depending how the next few threads go I might drop the quest, people seem to want to surrender our protagonist prerogative and play John as useful idiot that stands next to the various waifu's while they do amazing things, then occasionally doing something useful himself because the waifu lords demand it/are in danger.
>>
>>668789
We won't just sit on the sideline anon. John can support the others while being the protagonist still. Also we totally are still gonna do the gyms, even if they aren't the primary focus.

>>
>>668815

Battle gyms for fun
Unless we decide that John likes to battle in which go hardcore with it
Try contest for fun
See if we like it
We shouldn't pidgeon hole ourselves just yet
>>
>>668454
They were all decent, I think popplio's is cute.

>>
>>668831

>>
>>668840

Most anons probably do any to go down the gym route
I think we shouldn't pidgeon hole ourselves just yet even though I've never been fond of contest in any form
>>

I don't know how but auto correct fucked me
States should be suggest

>>
>>668891
>Also we totally are still gonna do the gyms, even if they aren't the primary focus.

That is just saying that even if people don't want to do gyms I'm still gonna say we do them for fun. I'm a fan of trying some of everything to see what we like and what fits most.
>>
>>668891
Also in thread one we voted on wanting to explore places, but that can easily change as a motivation.
>>
>>668817
oh shit wait i did mean d10
3 3d10s
take the sum of each 3d10 and compare it to the DC 0. passes i severe failure 1 pass is regular failure 2 passes is regular success 3 passes Great success

Modifiers modify. Makes a clear way for things that require dice to be much more affected the the skill of the person trying to perform said action via the application of modfiers than most any other system.

Like a skilled fighter versus an unskilled fighter. Using a D100 most QMs would put the DC to pass (for the skilled fighter) at like 30-40. But in reality a skilled fighter is gonna crush an unskilled fighter 95/100 times no problem.

Also makes crits much more unlikely which is more reasonable because when you look at some of these quests it just defies comprehension how the number of unlikely circumstances happen to them (because of dice rolls) no one is that luckly/unlucky/both.
>>
>>668998
>DC 0.
supposed to be Dc. 0 passes
>>
>>668998
Probably not the best example but more maths have been done on this subject than i care to explain and they pretty much always show that 90% of the dice systems we've used for quests in the past are fucked to all hell.
>>
>>668998
But how would that work with Pokemon percentages
Also that's mostly based on how th Qm treats crits
Some treat crits like there a divine message from the gods
Some don't give a fuck
Some just go "oh it's a crit I'm going to add the in some extra stuff then"
if the crit is seen as luck or just that the character is actually more skilled or competent then there opponent also depends on the Qm and MC
>>
>>668598
Battles are only the most fun in the vidya. This is not a vidya. Stop thinking in such a limited manner.

>>668580
Im not sure I fully agree. He would definitely get pressured into it, but rather reluctantly, probably lose and do something else.

>>668789
What I meant by saying our party members could be the MC, is referring to the vidya. The MC tends to challenge the league and does little else. Everyone is the MC of their own lives and so is John, but I don't want our own story to be as high-strung agressive-competitive as the last quest was, great though that may have been. We've already done that. Rather, I'd like to take up the challenge of finding some peace and quiet and other fun things to do. And a challenge it will be considering the girls' natures and our own weedy self. (Get it? Because he calls himself Herb? No? Fine... I'll show myself the door.)

What do you guys think a tookoo is?
>>
>>670609
>tookoo
maybe something like a recording of your aura
>>
I've been thinking a bit about combat. I want to encourage more creative approaches

The thing I think happens a lot is that action economy (amount of moves you usually have per battle) encourages some actions over others. Why set something up when you can guarantee a super effective hit now? PP in the games is somewhat of a solution, but it doesn't really translate well to quests.

Pokemon Tabletop United has some good approaches, like having some moves be usable once per scene, day, every other turn, etc. I think what I'd like to experiment a bit with is to make more powerful moves have a bit of cooldown. The idea isn't to punish the use of strong moves, but encourage more set up and consideration for timing. Make a move like Protect or spending a vote purely on defense be a viable choice and then follow up with a powerful move of your own. Or setting up a distraction with a weak move so you can ensure more accuracy with a stronger one. Stuff like that.

I know it's hard to tell how well it works without seeing it in action first, but as an idea, how does everyone feel about that?
>>
>>670679
I wouldn't be opposed, we'd have to test it out.

It would also keep our fights from being spam metronome
>>
>>670679
I'm up for trying it.
>>
>>670679
sounds like it could work, could you train pokemon to chain moves, like in the mystery dungeon games?

Say, Protect when the opponent is touching them, then use self destruct? Depending on how Protect works, the explosion could be captured in the force field and hits the opponent even harder
>>
>>670728
Exactly the kind of thinking I want to encourage.
>>
>>670679
I'd be okay with it. In the show, the pokemon usually don't just spam their best move until the opponent dies.
>>
>>670740
what exactly is a tookoo?

was my guess close?
>>
>>670679
Sure, I'd give that a shot.

And if not an absolute 'You can't use this again right away', maybe you could do something like give a negative modifier to the roll of an attack you just used (justification being your Pokemon is too tired or your opponent knows what to expect and you need to surprise them with it if you want it to hit as hard again).

Of course, that may fall into 'punishing the use of strong moves' depending on how you look at it, but its a thought.
>>
>>671025
That could be an idea, it just means Gobble would need to communicate clearly how long something is worse. But I think something like this instead of making them unavailable is a good idea. This could also open up training later on for Pokemon to ignore penalties on some moves.
>>
Gobble, how does the move gravity work?
>>
>>670679
You've clearly put some thought into this, and I think it'll give our battles some healthy extra variety. It'll take a fair bit of legwork on your end if you decide to customize every move, so I'm wondering if you plan on fleshing out the system as you go, or port directly over from PTU?

Did you get my email?
>>
>>670679
You could just make it so quicker moves are able to be used faster or in conjunction. Like Bite, your not going to just bite and run away, it's gonna be Bite and hold and thrash around and Bite some more. And have moves interrupt or hamper the accuracy/power of enemies moves. Hard to fire a hyperbeam with a Houndoom latched onto your throat. Unless you're an Steelix.

tldr make it more realistic.
>>
>>672090
I think weaker moves already go faster.
>>
>>670679
Sounds worth a shot. I'd be happy to see how it goes.
>>
>>670258
I'm interested in shards and very interested in Keira, so I think we should do that.
>>
>>670258
>>672194
Yeah, shards sound like something interesting to go for. This makes me wonder if anyone had ever been exposed as causing problems to then play the hero and get shards for.
>>
>>672205
Probably not
The island gives the shards to people who help out right?
So if someone decided to cause a problem then fix that problem the island would probably just not give them a share since they effectively did nothing.

Now if the evil team went around causing problems and there leader went around fixing same problems that might work

It all depends on how sentient the island is
>>
>>672217
That is what I meant, like a false hero. Cause the problem in secret or have someone do it for you, then the hero comes in to save the day and get the shard.
>>
>>672222
Causing the problem in secret will do shit
The island will know
Having someone else make the problem for you may work depending on how smart the island is
>>
>>671025
Yeah. Let's say for example a Pokemon uses Fire Blast. They can still vote to use it again, but if they do they'll run out of firepower (lol pun) in general for the rest of the fight and only shoot the most piddly of Embers. So you've got to make sure that shit is timed.

Didn't Pikachu sometimes run out of juice if he spammed electric attacks non stop?

Using the anime's Pikachu as a reference point:
- Had to train up to increase power from thunder shock to bolt to thunder.
- Learned to use Iron Tail for very short windows of time from seconds up through learning to use it as a combat parry.
- Learned to use Volt Tackle for short windows of time

And eventually learned to use Volt Tackle while using Iron Tail to parry multiple attacks. So yeah, there's some range in there. Attacking wears them down, and some sort of endurance system is pretty effective actually.

I always got the feeling in the last quest that big attacks were draining. It's not like the players had a lot of numbers to run off of in combat, so little things like Devon digging in his heels or Dan wobbling after attacks seemed representative of them taking endurance hits from pushing too hard.
