She looks absolutely delighted – in a mischievous, sly, sort of way – at the very mention of her name.

Hm?’ Houshou’s blue eyes light up with an expectant glow, giggling lightly as she stands on her tip-toes, her lips barely an inch away from your own. She really could be more forward than you could afford to give, at times. She presses herself against you even more, taking your name as encouragement. ‘Yes, Commander?’

You think fast. The last thing that you wanted after just mending what little rapport you had with Iowa was for her to walk in on you and your Light Carrier engaged in debasing acts in a common, shared area. You’re not so sure if that kind of conduct would fly with the Admiral either; he had given you leeway – not permission to turn every single stool or bench into your own personal primal ritual site.

A name comes to your head. You don’t even have the time to paddle back on this thought as it leaves your lips as suddenly as it arrives.

‘Taigei, she – !’

Houshou immediately pulls herself back immediately.

Taigei?’ She utters, her mouth having apparently gone slack at the moment you mention her name. ‘How do you know Taigei?’

‘I had a meeting with her yesterday.’ You reply, straightening your collar.

Her vibrant visage is all but gone, replaced by

‘What did she say?’ She takes

‘She asked me to pass you a message.’

Houshou says nothing, waiting for you to say your piece. You’re not sure if you should go further, but considering that you’d brought it up in the first place… it would be idiotic of you to not say it now.

‘She said that she misses your…’ You struggle with the words a little, not quite sure how to put them into context. ‘Little get-togethers. That it’s not the same without you.’

Her expression tightens immediately; Houshou straightens her kimono, furrowing her brows in annoyance. You’d only seen her act akin to this once – when she and Nagato had confronted you about your previous dealings with the Grand Lieutenant… and her eyes, if nothing else, right now, say that this particular topic wasn’t one that you could just jump in on and tease about.

She thins her lips, nodding.

I see.’

‘Houshou?’

She stirs at the call of her name, the scowl on her visage making way for a slightly surprised expression that comes right after. Houshou shows an upturn of her lips, but the motion is too slow, too constructed for it to come off as anything but a front. As much as you didn’t like traipsing where you obviously had no jurisdiction or influence, Houshou – one of the more experienced KanMusu of your party – being so shaken by a name and a phrase… seemed unfathomable to you.

‘Yes, Commander?’

Houshou rubs her shoulder, looking every part the calm veteran than you’d always thought of her as. She

‘You know you can talk to me if there’s anything on your mind, right?’ You offer tentatively offer. Perhaps a short step forward could get the momentum running; you didn’t want to charge right through like you had with Iowa… you don’t think you could stand it if Houshou, of all people, would have pushed you away.

‘I do.’ She bows respectfully.

You open your arms wide. Again, she appears a little startled by the action you put in motion… but not before you complete it. Wrapping your arms around her you find just how small she really is in your embrace – she couldn’t have been taller than a middle-school student if you really thought about it. There was a certain fragility to Houshou at times, even if there were times you thought that she was impervious.

C – Commander?’ She stutters, turning her head upwards in your chest. ‘Wh – What are you doing?

‘Um…’

There really wasn’t a thought that she would have objected to the action you had taken… after all, she had made it very clear on what her intentions for you were. Still, having her stirring in your arms had a little bit a niche to it – she wasn’t rough like Nagato or fluffy as Takao. You’d even go to far as to say that she was the perfect size; not too big and not to small that you’d have to hold back. She looks up at you, her cheeks puffed, waiting for an expectant answer… one that you didn’t have at the ready.

‘It’s a hug.’ You reply.

‘I – I know it’s a hug!’ She stutters, quivering in your chest. ‘B – But, why?’

There it was: the answer.

‘I thought you could use one.’You say with a smile, raising a hand to the top of her head and giving it a light rub. ‘Don’t like it?’

‘I…’ Houshou squirms under your touch… but she doesn’t push you away. After a while, she sighs, burying yourself in your chest. ‘I do.’

You almost laugh at how sincere she is.

‘Houshou… about Taigei.’ She squirms a little more, but… you think that she’s a little bit more receptive now. ‘Is there a history between the both of you or something?’

She hesitates.

‘We didn’t part on the best of terms.’

The Commander just has a lot on his plate at the moment. Which makes sense considering how hectic the last few days have been. We went on a secret mission, then did a whole boatload of paperwork (pun absolutely intended), ad went inland to gather intel, all in the span of like three days.

‘So you were friends.’

You’d thought as much. By the familiarity that Taigei seemed to address Houshou’s name had clued you in that the both of them had a sort of camaraderie with each other, although the mischievous tone that Taigei had taken in saying it did put a little doubt on that particular assumption. Still… it was really hard to think that Houshou would like being around someone that the Admiral had to put a verbal warning label on.

At the words, Houshou pushes herself away from you, biting her lip and furrowing her brows. The declaration doesn’t appear to have prompted her to confirm – if anything, an expression of doubt comes upon her and she shuffles in place, struggling with herself. You open your mouth to say something as a follow-up, but ultimately decide against it. Taking from your lessons from before, this was the time for you to keep quiet and wait. This was Houshou’s story to tell, after all.

‘I…’ She gives an apologetic smile – perhaps you had been too hasty in your assumption. She rubs her elbows, ‘I’d like to use that word, Commander, really, I would. But we weren’t friends… not in the most conventional sense, anyway.’

Outside, the rain grows heavier and the thunder rumbles. Maybe this wasn’t such a prudent course of action, after all… but your curiosity had risen a little. If Houshou and Taigei weren’t friends, then what were they? By the context of Taigei’s wording from before, there was an implication that they had more than just rubbed elbows. Taigei hadn’t been the most open to pursue a conversation was at the time – and you doubt that any time after that would be a better time, for that matter. Houshou sits on the top of her couch, deep in thought… this was probably a little deeper than a minute scuffle between friends.

‘I’m sorry, I don’t think you want to hear this.’ She finally says.

Despite yourself, you really can’t hold back on your curiosity… or your big fat mouth.

‘I do.’ You insist, even with all the warnings against your continuing dropping right in front of you. You open your mouth to take it back, just as Houshou’s head rises in surprise and confusion. ‘Really.’

You absently wonder if it would be possible for Akashi to check your brain for abnormalities. Perhaps if they did enough research, she could probably find a cure or synthesize a vaccine that kept people from saying things too stupid to leave their mouths. Houshou, however, doesn’t snap right back at you as you’d thought she would. In fact, she very much looks… appreciative of your gesture to hear her out.

Enough so that she actually walks back up to you, bending herself over and looking up at you with a mischievous smile.

‘If I tell you,’ she grins widely, wiggling her brows, ‘will you finally come into my room at night and give my ass a pounding every other night?’

You almost grin right back; she’s was playing the deflective game now, hoping to get you flustered and stuttering. You really can’t help yourself… you were a predator in all but name – once you saw an opening…

‘Tell you what?’ You reply, making her scrunch her lips and look up at you, confused. You puff your chest, putting your hands on your hips and bending down to meet her gaze. ‘I’ll do one better.’

Houshou smirks mischievously, leaning in closer to hear your proposition.

‘Whenever you need a hug… I’ll give you one.’ You say, sincerely. Houshou instantly snaps into a stand, her cheeks red; you press on, undeterred. ‘And if you’re still not satisfied with that… I’ll do what you ask.’

For the first time since you can remember, she visibly flusters, her shoulders raising and her face a funny shade of maroon. The rain grows a little heavier and the thunder rumbles louder, but Houshou has your full attention. She appears to be somewhere between choking, coughing and crying out in indignation – her brain appeared to be unable to make up its mind on just how to react, if the jittering steps were any indication. She looks like she’s about to fall over.’

Finally gathering herself, she marches right up to you, giving your prosthetic a hard slap with a tearful, puffed up and very much – for you, anyway – hilarious and indignant expression.

Commander!’

You give her a good-natured smile. She looks away immediately, clutching her cheeks.

‘Taigei and I… before we…’ Houshou sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose. ‘I’m sorry, this is a little hard for me to admit as a whole, but before I…’

You nod – you decide you’d let her do this at her own pace.

‘Before we were able to actually go into town and… buy services, for a while, we were…. lovers.’

Maybe you really should have seen that coming, considering just how you had encountered Taigei… and your Light Carrier’s own history.

‘You and Taigei – ?’

‘We weren’t spoilt for choice back then.’ She hastily adds. ‘And we knew each other enough to actually… consider it. The Shamans weren’t so big on it, of course… considering their vows, they couldn’t exactly encourage us to go around and ask if some mend would kindly stuff our holes.’

Something hits you.

Taigei’s a Carrier?’

‘She’s a Submarine Tender.’ Houshou frowns. ‘But her matrix, her core… they have a deformity that fits a Carrier’s spectrum. She has what we feel… but without the benefit of taking it into a weaponised form.’

Her cheeks turn a little more red.

‘When we were actually able to afford… we pooled resources together for… you know, pleasure houses. Shared them.’ She bites her lips. ‘But to be quite honest with you, Nagato was a less of a headache to deal with.’

‘So you just… drifted apart?’ You frown, curious about the split, despite your intentions to keep your curiosity down. Perhaps one day you should get Akashi to check around on why you kept saying things you always meant to keep down. ‘What happened?’

Houshou, ever the picture of elegance and serenity, immediately rests against the back of the couch in a huff. The topic had now taken a sour note, if her reaction said anything of it – and even if it didn’t, it brought no good. You’d always found Houshou adorable whenever she tried to scowl, but the way she took the news about Taigei… it’s a bit hard to describe, but it felt like – implications aside – you were a child that just moved to ask why they couldn’t see their father anymore. Her eyes take a cold quality as her body language takes an annoyed turn and she runs a troubled hand through her hair, muttering under her breath.

Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea. Maybe there was another thing you could talk about that wasn’t Taigei.

‘Would you like the personal reasons or the professional ones?’ She throws you a dark look, the edge of her smile feeling like the tip of a dagger than a genuine one. You want to take it back, but find that you can’t – not to that face.

You’d gone this far…and more information was always a plus… right?

‘The one that’ll give me a clearer picture.’ You inform her, resting your palms on the kitchen counter.

Houshou snorts, grumbling.

‘I’m asking the order that you want me to tell them.’ She bites her bottom lip, rubbing her ankles together. ‘They’re both pretty long.’

You sigh – you really just want to know what was going on. You’d only pieced together that they were lovers, had attended – and organized – group sessions when it came to sex and had broken up after a slew of disagreements. What you didn’t know was the context – you find it hard to believe that Houshou would throw down verbally with anyone to the point she would walk away with an argument as superficial as the foundations of a sex life. It was absurd.

‘I’d really just like an explanation.’ You let out tiredly – and honestly.

Houshou gives you a look, but otherwise keeping quiet. She looks deep in thought, trying to judge whether or not to sate your curiosity. In part, she had a right to – considering just what this about… you wouldn’t blame her if she’d just dropped it right now.

Then, with a reluctant tone… she speaks.

‘Taigei is a sadist. In or out of it, she derives getting off from one thing… being in charge. Whether it was me, or with the dozens of men we… rented, it had to be about her. She had to know – she had to have the end say. She was the first and she was the last – and she didn’t care for anyone. I wanted to talk to someone… but the Fairies didn’t get it and the Shamans didn’t bother.’

You frown, a little confused.

‘I already told you that we sought each other out to… relieve ourselves,’ Houshou elaborates, sighing audibly, ‘and the Shamans didn’t discourage it; for them, it was just another issue with a troublesome batch solved.’

‘You’re not troublesome.’ You insist… before picking up on something. ‘Did the Shamans actually call you that?’

‘No,’ she admits, chuckling wryly, ‘but the Shamanistic Order are pretty much celibate. One of the requirements of joining their number is to have been married or have children; pretty much all of them left their families to pursue the teachings… it’s supposed to represent that there are no absolute ties between your last life and the next,’ she smiles sadly at you, ‘and that you can severe them as easily as anything.’

You wince.

‘That’s kind of brutal, isn’t it?’ It did seem rather harsh. Throw away your ties to your children? Your wife? Your husband? Just like that? ‘I mean, for the families?’

‘It is, but that’s what it means to join the Order – that you’re willing to throw it away like that.’

‘I’m surprised Basilius is still standing.’ You snort – with that kind of practice, you would’ve pegged them to be overrun eons ago. Severing families and loved ones from each other? It was barbaric.

‘They’re good people.’ Houshou insists… albeit reluctantly. ‘And they know just what they’ve thrown away for the greater good. Without them… we wouldn’t be here.’

You try to get back on topic. This particular branch of talk was depressing.

‘So you and Taigei were lovers and the Shamans didn’t… care?’

‘I already belonged to an Admiral at the time and Taigei was put into the Hunter’s Lodge with other Submarines.’ Houshou goes on. ‘I didn’t think much of it, but it turned out that… in our time as lovers and spendthrift sluts, she’d been gathering information on the operations of Ominato. She and the Submarines deliberately manipulated our friendship to find out which Admirals weren’t doing as they were told. How they should and would be punished… what the Court of Admirals wants to know, she’ll do it – not out of duty, but because she gets her kicks from people squirming when she sends a report. The fact that she’s on top and that there’s nothing else no one can do anything about it appeals to her. That’s why she’s Record Keeper.’

She finishes with a scowl. That had to be the most unflattering peer review ever.

‘It’s hard to believe that there’re KanMusu like that.’ You admit. You hadn’t expected that. ‘I always thought of you as… poster girls.’

‘We are.’

You both share a chuckle; good, bad, and everywhere in between.

‘What’s this about Nagato?’

Houshou cocks her head, confused.

‘Nagato?’ She repeats.

‘You said that she was… less of a headache to deal with.’ You tentatively mention. You get the implication… but still, confirmation was still something you wanted out of it.

‘Oh.’ She brightens, instantly adopting a mischievous look. ‘That.’

Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea, after all.

‘Well, it’s the truth. She was a lot easier to deal with when down to it.’ She says in an affected voice, crossing her rather shapely legs before you. ‘Especially in bed – that lady is a Battleship every step of the way.’

There is a hotness in your ears you can’t deny – you take a step back, instantly regretting your pursuit… and come in contact with the edge of the counter, much to Houshou’s amusement. For all her negativity in regards to Taigei, she really could throw you in a blender when she wanted.

H – Houshou!’ You weakly protest… before something dawns on you. ‘Wait, you and Nagato?’

She hums innocently.

‘It was nothing special… she was sent in for an investigation once – this was after I didn’t want anything to do with Taigei.’ She says in a mockingly bored tone, absolutely reveling in your embarrassment. ‘The pleasure houses, though… that was a whole different story; this was just before I was given a retirement plot and Nagato – back then under Ominato – actually caught me bringing back a gaggle to my dorm. I was serving as Vice-Admiral back then.’ She giggles, covering her mouth. ‘I thought I could get away with it.’

‘Oh, you mean you didn’t?’

You exchange smirks.

‘In my defense, I wanted cock in all three of my holes hours ago. I thought I would’ve had the perks to go with the hat, but… she wasn’t exactly… understanding. Carriers and other KanMusu generally don’t get along.’

‘I heard that.’ You nod – you’d heard as much. ‘So what happened?’

‘We had an orgy, of course!’

The way she says it, putting her hands on her hips and looking up in triumph…

You what?

‘Come on, Commmander,’ she giggles again, ‘you weren’t so naive to think she was anything but Mustang, were you?’

‘I know that much!’ You yell hotly, blushing. ‘I’m no prude!’

‘Think of it this way, when you flick – !’

‘Houshou.’ You warn her… although, with your expression it might as well have been a squeak.

‘I wouldn’t be a good lover if I didn’t share those little details with the ones I love sharing the bed with.’ She approaches you, a naughty smile playing upon her features. ‘Although, I’m a little surprised she let you pee in – !’

‘Your file mentioned you being a Vice-Admiral.’ You decide to bring it up while you had the chance. ‘How did you end up with the position? I thought that only humans could take any of the three Officer ranks.’

Houshou’s eyes widen in surprise. She probably hadn’t expected you to play on that particular topic; your Light Carrier rubs her elbow, grimacing as she turns away.

‘It’s… complicated.’

The thunder outside rumbles as you wait for her to go on.

‘Back then, we were very much starved for recruits. Not as much as we are now, but… well, the Admiralty tried a project to see if they could… recreate the Stream on artificial means.’

‘The Fairies knew about this?’

With everything that had happened, you wouldn’t be surprised if it was another one of the Admiralty’s secret projects.

‘Of course.’ She answers, surprising you. ‘The Fairies agreed to see which KanMusu could act as an artificial Stream line holder – we were able to get volunteers, but most of the KanMusu…’ She sighs, looking more troubled than before. ‘The Destroyers that took part in it almost died, the Heavy Cruisers and Light Cruisers that tried to hold it either couldn’t hold it or almost went insane, the Battleships almost killed the Admirals… and the Submarines were a hundred percent successful but it turned out to be a one way street for the humans. They couldn’t draw on that power any more than anyone else could.’

‘And the Carriers?’

She had failed to mention them.

‘3 of us were successful test cases. Myself, Unryuu and Taihou.’ She answers robotically. ‘The others ended up almost driving their human subjects insane as grounding points.’

‘So you three were made Vice-Admirals?’

‘No, only I was.’ She grunts, shifting slightly. ‘And even then, it wasn’t for long. The artificial Stream still needed a grounding point… Unryuu only lasted two months before it took too much out of her; she had to be re-stabilized or she would’ve died. Taihou… she died during an Operation. We didn’t find out if it was because of the experiment’s failure or if the Abyssals got to her first.’

‘What about you?’

The lightning flashes outside, followed by the thunder.

Houshou, for a brief moment, adopts a look of annoyance at your inquiry.

‘I lasted 8 months… but the toll of carrying so many KanMusu in me… it almost tore my matrix apart.’ She pats her chest. ‘It took them months to put me back together… and they let me retire in piece after.’

‘Would you be able to do it again?’

Maybe you should call Akashi. There really was something keeping your inhibitions from kicking in.

‘If you ask me to… if I’m needed…’ She looks right at you. ‘I will.’

‘Of course.’ you reply, grimacing.

It was a little surreal to hear her take such an adamant stance when it came to her orders. You would have thought to have at least been given another glower at the very thought of asking her to do something that had clearly – by her own words – taken more out of her than she would care to admit. As much as you don’t want to see it… now, as a Commander you can make it out all too clearly: that as a KanMusu, she would follow your orders to Hell and back. Without complaint, without fail… she would do it when you asked – when you commanded it to be so.

‘Sir.’ She bows courteously, affirming your theory.

But still… it didn’t feel right to just leave out in the open.

You don’t think you could truly ever ask that of Houshou.

‘But if I ever ask you that… you get the permission to throw one punch.’ You give her an assuring smile. She meets it with confusion… to which you reach right over and take her hand – small as it is – and tap your own nose with a free finger. ‘Right in my nose, no questions asked.’

She giggles as she takes her hand away from you, her features forming into a playful scowl. You waggle your eyebrows, making her shoulders quake a little more. It’s a nonsensical gesture, one that probably a hundred clowns could do, but between you and Houshou… it was a small promise. One that, if it ever came down to it, would remind you that you had once thought of this woman – and the others under your command – as a person and not a weapon.

You hope a day like that never comes.

‘I’ll remember that, sir.’

‘Dismissed, Houshou.’

‘Sir.’ She gives a playful salute.

As she turns around… you remember something.

‘Houshou, hang on.’

Wrapping your arms around her, you give her a bear of a squeeze, making her let out a squeal. You lift her off her feet, your arms finding their purpose, coiling around her as tightly as you could without crushing her – much. Houshou practically stutters in your arms, trying to find a way to squirm, so unexpected is your attack on her person. She calls you by rank and regulation… although you really can’t tell for sure; she seems to mix your rank and the names of various pre-school profanities in an embarrassed fluster that only encouraged your further.

Barely 10 seconds later, you finally let her go.

Houshou says nothing, looking at you with a mixture of indignation and… enthusiasm.

She bows, bolting away before you could say a word after.

The clock strikes 0800 on the wall. You move to finish up your food and clear up your mess – all as the thunder shook the barracks and the lightning flashed. On the ceiling, you hear several hard footsteps – the Division had finally come around to waking up for the day. You sit on the counter, eating your food again.

You’re at your last bite when a loud bang on the counter catches your attention.

You look up to see…

‘Mornin’, Commander!’

Tenryuu, clad in a t-shirt and nothing at the bottom, energetically slams her hand down on the counter again, grinning toothily. You look up at her, fixing a wry smile – for someone who had been pegged as a consummate professional, she could rival Samidare at times when it came to the sheer volume she packed.

‘Morning, Tenryuu.’ You greet in return, nodding to her rather loose attire. ‘Getting ready for work?’

‘What?’ She gives her chest a pat and let out a quick huff, still grinning cheerfully. ‘Oh, nah.’

‘Are we playing hooky?’ You fix her with an unamused look… but the tone of your voice gives away the playful nature of your jibe. Tenryuu instantly picks up on it, of course, leaning over the counter and meeting our gaze.

‘As if you can talk!’ Tenryuu snorts, pointing a finger at you. ‘You slept two friggin’ days.’

‘I slept 28 hours.’ You clarify, frowning.

‘I know what it is.’ She leans over the counter. ‘So what’ve you been up to? We’ve barely had a chance to have a chat since the beach.’

You grab your bowl and utensils, placing them in the sink to start washing. Your back to Tenryuu, you engage her again.

‘I think we’ve all actually been busy.’ You admit – outside, the wind and the rain begin to pick up a little more. ‘But I think, with the rain… we might have some reprieve. Hopefully.’

‘Fat chance.’ You hear Tenryuu declare. ‘People still need their food and blankets… not to mention for the ones fleeing inland.’

‘Are people still looking for passes on transports inland?’ You turn around, wiping your knife.

‘Eh, yeah, of course.’ She shrugs nonchalantly. ‘What? You think people want to stay out here with us?’

‘I didn’t know so many were willing to go inland and abandon their homes.’ You clarify – although, considering the state of things… the blame hardly lay with the Yokosuka denizens. ‘How many left? 50,000?’

‘42,438 at last count. We’ve had people trickling out by the literal truckloads the last month.’ She answers mechanically. ‘It’s too dangerous… and rebuilding is taking a pretty penny out of the Admiralty’s and the Government’s coffers. Still, more out of the line of fire, the better, yeah?’

‘I guess.’

‘So, whatcha doin’?’

‘Just cleaning up. Gotta get ready for – !’

Tenryuu yelps as a boom of thunder practically shakes the barracks – and in her small jump, you find – and realize – that the shirt that she wore, fluffy as it was… had a gap much too big to count as anything less than a loose sack.

‘Man, that was a loud one.’

One with a clear view of her large breasts through her collar.

‘I saw you perform for Open Mic Night.’ You start. That had been a surprise. ‘I didn’t know you could sing.’

‘Eh, heh,’ Tenryuu turns red, rubbing the back of her neck; it would seem that she had taken it for a compliment, ‘well, it’s comes with practice…’

‘You were pretty damn good.’

She turns a little redder, puffing her cheeks and looking away.

‘Thank you.’ She says sincerely, grinning widely right after. ‘You’re the first person to say that since my Vice-Admiral.’

You frown – Tenryuu had been under the last Vice-Admiral’s Command?

‘That really strict guy with the…?’ You make a pinching and dragging motion from your bottom lip to under your chin, over and over again.

‘You know, you can just say goatee.’ She smirks.

You didn’t have fond memories of the Vice-Admiral – the proctor who had told you to go on home with the subtlety of a hammer and a loudspeaker fused. His glare was one of the things that

‘He looked like a cartoon villain. I thought he’d be hunched over and cackling over some evil plot half of the time.’ You admit – even the memory of him made you shiver a little. ‘If I could call him anything… it’d be a nutbuster.’

To your surprise… Tenryuu barks, holding onto the counter as she gives you a look somewhere between disbelief and amusement.

‘Yeah, that’s him.’ Tenryuu agrees, adjusting her large T-shirt. ‘I think he was a teacher before the Admiralty brought him in – I was under his Forces for a few years. Hell of a taskmaster, I tell you that much; kept pushing everyone until we were nothing but tears. He never discouraged me when it came to my playing the piano or my singing, though.’ She nods, smiling fondly at the memory. ‘Gave me some good advice – if I wanted to do something, I had to stick to it, no matter what anyone said, good or bad. If it comes down to it, he said that at least at the end of the day I stuck with it.’

‘He introduced you to music?’

‘No, I took that up on my own time. Had to do something other than running around the border of the hot zones, you know?’ Tenryuu shrugs.

Everyone needs a hobby.

‘So what kind of music do you stick with?’

Tenryuu frowns, turning her nose up at you.

‘I don’t have anything I stick with.’ She says snootily. ‘I just play whatever I think sounds nice enough to get my attention, is all. Although, that isn’t much to say… we don’t even have a piano lying around her for me to practice.’

You distinctly remember her banging on some keys that night.

‘Where’d you get the – ?’

‘Some of the maintenance crew was nice enough to donate their instruments for us to play that night.’ She cuts in. ‘It’s not mine.’

‘You’ll be happy to know that I’ve arranged for a trip inland this weekend.’ You declare. ‘You know, so you can do your shopping.’

Tenryuu’s reaction is instantaneous. She instantly pumps a fist in delight, looking very much the part of a child that had a promise to them made good. She leans over the counter, inquisitively – and brightly – looking up at you with her brilliant yellow gaze. You fight down a smile yourself – she could be a bundle of joy when she wanted to be, that was for sure.

‘Sweet!’ She grins widely, tapping her fingers on the surface of the table. ‘Where are we headed?’

‘Well, considering that I’m the Commander and you’re still a KanMusu… we still need to be close enough to be on-call…’

Tenryuu instantly droops; the two structures by the side of her head – which you now remember are built-in communication arrays – droop with her. It’s amazing how much she looked like a deflated puppy; you hadn’t even finished what you’d wanted to say.

‘Hang on, sir.’ Tenryuu scratches her ear, giving you a look that was a cross between disappointment and frustration. ‘Are you talking about Ichigodou?’

‘What’s with that face?’ You frown, rubbing your left hand.

‘That’s kinda where I don’t wanna go.’ Tenryuu groans, planting her face on the table counter. ‘That place has practically nothing!’

You frown even deeper, a little hurt by the accusation. You’d worked in Ichigodou before, and while it did havepractically nothing, as a place to just kick back and relax, it was a rather decent metropolitan area. It had brand shops, high end restaurants, hotels and a small river going around the city… it was a classy place. It hardly classified as somewhere that was truly worthy of vitriol.

Although… it did have a rather… snooty atmosphere.

‘I think Ichigodou’s a decent place; nice hotels, some really good restaurants, a nice river view…’

‘It’s a tourist trap! Why would I want to go to a tourist trap?’ She whines, face-first into the counter. ‘I just wanna get some clothes – and you know that those bimbos are gonna friggin’ overcharge you for an undersized dress!’

You smirk.

‘I’m aware of Ichigodou’s reputation… which is why we’re not going there.’ You clarify. ‘I have a transport for us to get to Kishin Metro. That should be a little bit more our speed.’ Tenryuu instantly brightens at that. ‘Shopping arcades, some bargain bin stalls, cheap food… the works.’

‘Now you’re talking!’

She grins again…

‘Glad you approve.’

And droops again… twiddling her fingers.

‘What?’ You sigh.

‘Can I... ask for one more thing?’

You gesture for her to continue.

‘I was wondering… maybe we could bring one ‘a the others along?’

‘Who do you have in mind?’ You ask. You didn’t have anyone in particular… and perhaps Tenryuu already did.

‘Eh, actually, I thought I’d leave it up to you.’ She shrugs.

You give her a flat look, crossing your arms.

Tenryuu.’

Your Light Cruiser gives an apologetic grin, scrunching her mouth and placing her hand under her chin.

‘Well, I have a few names.’

‘So? Spill.’ You rush her – not intending to sound rude… but there were things to do in the event that any other KanMusu wanted to come with. ‘I can’t sign off on so much, you know. You gotta tell me, or else I can’t do anything about it.’

Tenryuu raises her hands to placate you, getting the message.

‘Okay, okay… well, Murakumo might want to tag along… she’s been yammering about that newfangled console that just came out in town and she wants to get one for her.’ You open your mouth to say something… but Tenryuu makes a motion to have you quickly shut it soon after. ‘Don’t tell me you want to get it for her, because in her own words, if she’s not the one picking it out, paying for it over the counter and giggling on the way back to base… she doesn’t want anything to do with it.’

You frown deeper – you hadn’t expected Murakumo to have been one of those types.

‘Irako could use a trip inland, too… she hasn’t had a day off in forever and I think standing in the kitchen with Mamiya for so long isn’t good for her. Girl needs to live outside of gossip and cooking.’ She points a finger. ‘Same goes for Nachi. She’s a bunch of issues… maybe a night on the town will do a little bit of good for her, too. She needs something to get her mind off things. I don’t care what psych evaluation says, sometimes you just need to hang out with your buddies and just let it out, you know.’

‘I’m surprised you consider me part of that buddy conversation.’ You smirk at her. ‘And a little flattered.’

She rolls her eyes.

‘Then… there’s Iowa, of course.’ Tenryuu sighs, the smile half gone. ‘I think she could use a warmer welcome. Some good old hospitality.’

‘Iowa? You’ve talked with her?’ You blink, surprised. You didn’t think that she’d have talked to anyone right after arriving.

‘I was the one who let her in, you know.’ Tenryuu huffs, glaring at you. ‘You sign off on a temporary transfer and don’t even have the courtesy to leave an extra key around for her to let herself in? We’re at war – it doesn’t mean we have to be rude, you know.’

‘I’ll have a word with my attendants.’ You could’ve sworn ‘They should’ve been there.’

‘They were.’ She answers, rubbing her temples. ‘They accidentally locked themselves out.’

>‘If you can convince Iowa, she’s welcome to come along.’

How you act and the decisions you make reflect on you as a person and a Commander. People who are more exposed to certain sides of you would either like you when you do certain things in certain ways... or don't like you doing it at all. An example of this would be Iowa's encounter.

You showed to her that you were considerate enough to back off on her request, inquisitive/curious/caring enough to inquire into her attitude and ultimately be forgiving of her conduct over breakfast. There aren't "good" or "bad" numbers/attitudes/meters, but people are reading you as much as you are them.

‘If you can convince Iowa, she’s welcome to come along.’ You reluctantly concede. As much as you wanted to bring Nachi and sate Murakumo’s vice… maybe opening a clean slate with Iowa would be the best thing to do. ‘Although, I have my doubts.’

‘Eh? Why?’ Tenryuu puts her hands on her hips, frowning.

‘I don’t think she likes me that much.’ You admit with a grumble. Maybe she tolerated you a little more after that tea, but as far as first impressions went, you had – once again – yourself found wanting in their eyes.

Tenryuu happily nods.

Great! I’ll go talk to her!’

She races upstairs before you can get a word in edgewise.

Once Tenryuu had left the room… you set yourself into your working chair, throwing a glance outside. The rain hadn’t become any heavier since that loud rumble of thunder, but it wasn’t what you’d call weather fit for a stroll, either. You open the drawers, taking out pieces of paper and begin scribbling your agenda for the day. There would be a lot more to get to… but for now, you think it would be best if – !

You hear a knock on the door. In fact, you hear several loud rapping noises by the door, as if someone was scratching to get in. You get to your feet, making your way into the hall and down to the entrance to see just who it could be – who in the world would walk through the rain and the lightning at this time of – ?

As the wind and the water greet your face… so do two familiar patrons.

‘G – Good morning, sir!’

Your two attendants salute, clad in a set of of cheap ponchos and clutching several bags and folders, encased in plastic wrapping to protect them from the rain. Of course it would be them.

‘Get inside here!’ You usher them into the barracks ‘What in the world did you think you were doing running out in the rain?’

They hang their wet ponchos on the rack by the side – it’s probably the first time in a while that the thing had seen some use.

‘W – W – We wanted to bring you and LEIA some breakfast.’ Your bulky attendant gestures to a plastic bag his friend held. ‘They had some hot gruel this morning, t – t – thought we could share before we got to work.’

‘Is LEIA awake?’ Your lanky attendant inquires – despite the ponchos, they were still rather drenched. The wind must have picked up quite a bit since you’d woken up.

‘I think at this point… they all are.’ You look to the ceiling, frowning. ‘I have my doubts on if they’re willing to go to work, though. Storm doesn’t look like it’s going to let up.’ He offers to open one of the plastic packs, but you raise a hand, stopping him. ‘I just had breakfast, actually – but I appreciate it.’

They put on identical grins, pleased with themselves.

‘So, what do you wanna do first, sir?’

‘Are we behind on anything?’ You inquire. It was best to get things that were stacking up out of the way first.

Your bulky attendant instantly dives into his pockets, taking out a black notebook, which had been rendered rather crumpled and wet by their running in the rain. He opens it up delicately – so as not to tear the pages – but otherwise ends up with a drenched piece of paper torn right out of it, anyway. Still, it doesn’t stop him from holding it up to the light and reading through what you can only make of as a record of your activities in regards to the paperwork.

Outside, the thunder rumbles loudly.

‘As of today, sir, we’re… of course it’d be today… we’re behind on Nagato-san’s stack.’ You frown, finding yourself annoyed with that particular bit of information – you’d slogged through the details like it was no one’s business and it was right up there again. Your attendant continues, squinting. ‘We’re a bit tight on Base Duties and Division Duties but we have a little bit of leeway on Supplementary Duties… you can put those on the low priority list if you want, sir.’

You try to get something answered first – namely a certain Sub-Commander’s stack which you know you had powered through just under two days ago.

‘Hang on, didn’t we just do Nagato’s paperwork the other day?’ You point out, pinching the bridge of your nose. You didn’t like going through the same work twice.

The both of them look at each other, before looking back at you as though you had just asked what color the sky was on a clear day.

‘Well… she does serve as the Admiral’s go-to when she’s not under you, sir.’ Your lanky attendant offers, shrugging. ‘It’s only natural that her stack replenishes faster than yours do.’

Once again, you find yourself marveling that Nagato could manage through the work all by her lonesome. Here you were with two attendants and you couldn’t, for the life of you, get even one a hundred percent off your desk.

‘I guess it is.’ You admit.

Your bulky attendant puts away his notebook… and the both of them await your instruction.

You’re interrupted from declaring your choice – Nagato’s workload – by a pair of quick, loud steps down the stairs. You turn around to see your newest recruit, clad in t-shirt, jeans, a puff of wet, fluffy hair and an expression of urgency. Upon contact with your two attendants, she immediately snaps to attention and gives all three of you a salute, noticeably flustered. You give her a curt nod… and out of the corner of your eye, spy your bulky attendant give her a small, proud smile.

‘LEIA.’ You greet her.

She stutters, dropping into an apologetic bow, much to your surprise. Had she done something wrong?

‘I – I’m sorry, Commander, I’m not late am I?’

So that’s what it was.

‘No, you’re… on time, actually.’ You assure her. She holds her chest, letting out a sigh of relief as the thunder rumbles outside. ‘Your boyfriend’s brought you breakfast.’ You gesture to the bags that your attendants held in their hands. ‘I suggest that the three of you eat before we get started.’

‘Started?’ She blinks.

‘You’ll be helping me with my paperwork… for now, of course.’ You hadn’t had time to sort out the details of her workload… but another butt at the desk wouldn’t be so bad for now. ‘I still haven’t had the time to assign you to a post or talk with any of the other departments if they have any use for an extra pair of hands. At the present time… let’s see how well you can do with at a desk with a pen.’

She salutes, again, incorrectly.

‘Sir.’

Despite your command, however, the three of them – and you – immediately get to work on the work stack. Large plastic containers filled with gruel and meat pass around as another table joins your attendant’s makeshift workspace and the rain rumbles outside. Occasionally, you hear the rushing of feet down the flight of stairs and the sound of the door opening and shut with quick slams – despite the weather, it wasn’t a day off for them either.

Nagato’s stack proves to be as much of a chore as it had been before. The amount of departmental cross-referencing is truly staggering, even after all that work you’d done before. LEIA – much to your surprise – powers through it with her boyfriend like a champion and does her work without complaint… although you do have to refer her back to the correct stack occasionally or correct her on signing off permissions that had you as their final stumbling block.

‘Wait a second, that’s not meant to be there.’ You frown, taking a piece of paper from your lanky attendant. ‘The calibration issues are meant to be wholly signed off by me until Nagato gets things running.’

You didn’t want any complaints from The Admiral.

By the time you were done, it’s past 1300.

The 4 of you set down your pens.

‘Weather’s looking up.’ LEIA chimes, frowning as she looks outside. ‘Still raining, though.’

‘Is there enough left for lunch?’ LEIA inquires, her arms wrapped around the neck of her much larger – albeit ultimately shorter – boyfriend. You fight down a smirk as he tries to calm himself down, opening the wrapping over another thick bread roll.

‘T – This one’s mine, though!’ He protests, keeping her away from what he had apparently claimed for his meal. You continue to watch them with interest, the rain still pouring down outside. ‘There’s still a lot of gruel left – you can help yourself, you know?’

‘Come on, fatso, if you can slurp through two bowls you can spare your darling girlfriend a nice bite from ya bread, right?’ She grins teasingly, leaning over his cheek to chomp – or try to, anyway – at the piece. He has none of it, however, holding it out of her reach as she reaches for it. ‘Come on, stingy, don’t be such a glutton!’

‘Who’s a glutton?’ He huffs, making a rather decent show of avoiding her hands and dipping his bread into a bowl. ‘I only eat what I’m given!’

Your lanky attendant snorts, prompting him to give him a glare. Using the distraction afforded by her ally, she immediately cranes over and bites a huge chunk out of his bread, making your attendant drop it. Swiftly, she dives for piece… and looking right into his eye as she rested on the floor, throws the rest of in in her mouth, chewing for emphasis.

‘What? What? Gonna cry?’ She gloats, leaning in to him.

Your bulky attendant immediately scrunches his lips… and you’re wondering if you’d have to separate them from having a lovers’ spat in the middle of working hours, but for a while, they only trade looks. LEIA’s superior smirk to his displeased glare… until he raises from his seat and gives her an immediate peck on the nose.

LEIA’s reaction is immediate as she staggers back, flaming red. You swear that there might be steam coming out of her ears if there had been a boiling point.

‘Of course not.’ Your attendant answers coolly, a little red. ‘If I got pissed over every little thing you did… I wouldn’t be a boyfriend now, would I? Besides… I… I think we had a fair trade, don’t we.

Die, normalfags.

It isn’t until a little later that the four of you get to work on Divisional Duties. The pile isn’t large or puzzling, but there is a little more tension between your bulky attendant and LEIA as they set to work, with LEIA’s ears turning red every time their hands accidentally touched or your attendant’s cheeks turning maroon whenever she paid him a compliment.

By the time the clock strikes 1600, the three of you are shuffling documents to be delivered.

Outside, the rain subsides, only a drizzle left.

‘Good work, everyone.’

‘I’m going to catch the Admiral before he gets off work.’ You declare, handing the last of the paperwork over to your lanky attendant. ‘Is he still at the Command Tent?’

The both of them look thoughtful.

‘He should be.’ Your lanky attendant nods. ‘The move shouldn’t have been done by today.’

‘What move?’ You frown – you hadn’t heard of a move before.

‘The Command Tent is due to move back to the base soon.’ Your bulky attendant explains, going through one of the many folders in his hand and passing it over to you. It looked like a schedule for a move. ‘They must have cleared most of the material by now…’

You doubt that. With the weather as it was, there must have been a delay of sorts.

‘Thanks.’ You turn to LEIA. ‘LEIA, make sure they get everything done before you leave. Good job today.’

‘Yes, sir.’ She salutes before dropping into a bow. ‘Thank you for today, sir.’

You nod, walking down the hallway and taking one of the umbrellas. Stepping outside, you see that the rain was still going as strong as it had this morning – you’d been wrong when you’d assumed that it had been over… that must have been a temporary reprieve. Still… it seemed like there was less wind, and thankfully, a lot less thunder and lightning. Your boots splash on the many puddles that made the compound as you rushed into the street to make your journey.

To your surprise, the army is as busy as you’d assumed the rest of the base to not be. You spy them running around, clutching their guns as they rush into jeeps and buildings, providing further relief for the town. You hadn’t really taken notice, but the neighborhood, despite the bad weather, had taken a better turn, aesthetically. There were still ruins here and there, but the patch job was decent enough.

The maintenance crew, in their bright orange uniforms, rush past you as you jog past the beach to make your way to the Command Tent. Even with the bad rain, it would seem there wasn’t enough rest to go around. You hear yells over the din as, just under half an hour later, you come up to the stretch of road coming up to the Command Tent, where, indeed, most of the tents around it had been moved. There was just pavement and a select few bright orange ones left for the crew to use as shelter from the weather, where they chatted over one thing or the other.

‘I tell ya, we have a pop star here!’

‘Buddy, can it.’

You chuckle as you go inside the tent, where you see that most of the equipment, save for some of the smaller apparatus, had been indeed, transferred – probably to where your attendant had mentioned. Even the partitions were gone.

The Admiral sits behind a small table, going through a few forms of his own.

‘Admiral.’

He raises his head.

‘Commander.’

‘I found out about Yamato and Musashi, sir.’ You say, your lips thinning. ‘You’re not going to like it.’

He gestures you to sit down so you can begin your report.

You reveal to him the predecessor of PROJECT GOOD NEIGHBOR, PROJECT RED SON and how the latter bore more fruit than the former ever did; rather than anger, he reacts with a sort of grim understanding of the actions undertaken by The Admiralty; the both you take care to keep it down, lest the fairies catch wind of the news – you’re thankful that the place is void of anyone else. When you get to the part of the interception of the Princess, however, The Admiral bites down a curse and a half, almost letting out a string of words – how The Admiralty should have known better than to underestimate a force of nature; how more than a decade of war had done nothing to teach them to not get ahead of themselves; how, as tacticians and commanders, they had failed to inform and organize a plan of attack by coordinating all available hands on deck.

Waiting for The Admiral to calm down, you get down to the topic – and the news – of Musashi and Yamato’s survival… in the hands of the Haszad Union. How the Admiralty held back on the status of their survival – and how they had ended up there – to keep any leakage of information from reaching the fairies. The Admiralty had kept things quiet, negotiations and all… from anyone and everyone save for the higher echelons, and you told the Admiral that they wanted to keep things as such. By the end of it all, he’s as jaded and tired as a man who had run a mile. His hands are rubbing his temples and his teeth grind against each other as he tries to take it all in.

Good grief.’ He declares, laughing mirthlessly. ‘How? How could they have let things get this far? The damn idiots!’

You open your mouth to say something, but quickly close it – if you said the wrong thing, you’d be liable for a knock on the teeth.

‘I’m not going to lie to you, Commander,’ he runs a hand through his hair, grumbling, ‘this is probably as worst case as worst case scenarios go. I was fully prepared to accept that we’d lost them, that they were gone, but… but this?’ He practically snarls. ‘We’re not just fighting mindless abominations anymore – we got the worse damn cards – red tape, international tomfoolery and self-serving bastards. Lethal combination.’

He takes out his pipe, angrily striking a match.

‘Of all the damn things to happen…’

‘What do you think the Admiralty’s trying to do here?’ They’re the first words to leave your mouth. You’d discussed some of it with Taigei, but by being so cryptic, she didn’t give you a proper hold for you to latch on ‘I get the secrecy, but they can just as well grab someone from the ambassadorial office to arrange a deal, wouldn’t they?’

The Admiral sighs, fiddling with his cap.

‘That’s probably the first course of action they took… and if things have gone as bad as this, then it must have taken a Hell of a turn since.’ He grinds his teeth – you can hear the frustration and annoyance in his voice. ‘Ain’t to two ways about it, I have no doubt that The Admiralty’s – the Court’s and the Grand Lieutenant’s – was to use governmental channels to negotiate their release.’ Casting a troubled eye on to you, he lets out a growl. ‘If this is how long it’s been, we can only assume that every attempt’s met a dead friggin’ end.’

You bite your lip… that didn’t leave a lot of options left for the Admiralty to do.

‘So what’re we talking about now, then?’

‘Right now, it’s not about what the Admiralty’s trying to do anymore… it’s what the Haszad Union wants.’ He answers with the utmost seriousness, grinding his teeth and pinching the bridge of his nose again. ‘Of all the damn countries to get a hold on Yamato and Musashi, it’s one of the last two stinkin’ nations in the world we wanted to find in blood in the water.’ He snorts, practically spitting the words out. ‘Ironic.’

‘So all this is…?’

‘Delaying action.’ He chuckles darkly, crossing his arms as he leans back in his chair. ‘The Haszad Union isn’t going to let go of two potential superweapons. Especially after they got kicked out of the discussions for refusing to agree with the terms of the Shamans.’

‘Taigei… said that it’d be nonsensical to consider that option.’ You bite your lip, unsure how to go on. ‘With the nature of the project, any Shaman finding out would lead back to the Fairies.’

‘So what can The Admiralty do?’ You press – maybe there was something they’d overlooked, as thin as it sounded.

The Admiral takes a puff of his pipe, letting out a breath you didn’t know he had been holding.

‘Right now, their best bet… in fact, their only option would be to welcome the Haszad Union into the alliance… on their own terms.’ That did seem like the only course of action to take. ‘And you know they’re not going to play by the rules.'

‘Do you think that they’ll actually…?’

‘That’s what they’re trying to avoid.’ He answers with a finality, grumbling. ‘I’m getting too old for this shit.’

‘The Haszad Union’s risking a lot by doing this.’

At least, in your opinion, they did. Why would a whole nation risk the scrutiny of the international audience – especially at a time like this? Against a faction that was moving for the survival of all mankind?

‘You don’t make a big play if there’s not a big gain in return.’ The Admiral answers gruffly. ‘As things are, they hold all the cards. Whether they wait out or play them as is, they’re going to come away with something.’ He raises a finger, frowning. ‘In one scenario, the negotiations fail, the Admiralty bends over and takes it like a champ and keeps their secrets.’ He raises another one. You listen intently, beginning to understand the context of the decisions that had been made by the Union. ‘In another the negotiations get somewhere and the Admiralty gets the girls back but has to clue the Haszad Union in on the alliance and in the last one the Haszad blows the lid, takes the fallout and watches the Admiralty burn from their own damn recklessness.’

The Admiral shakes his head, chuckling once more.

‘They get what they want in the first two and are able to be petty enough to afford the last one.’ He gives you a defeated smile. ‘There’s no losing equation to them in this act.’

Something hits you. Maybe it was worth a try.

‘Hang on… what about the League of Nations? Surely they could – ?’

The Admiral shakes his head again.

‘With logistics as they are, there’s no way for the League to gather itself; Haszad’s almost as bad as the Abyssals – and even if they did gather enough forces for another front of war, would you even want them to? Haszad didn’t suffer as much in those opening years as the rest of us did. In fact, the only reason they probably saw a reason not to annex us in all the confusion is because the Shamans and Fairies were explicitly on our side.’

‘But with Yamato and Musashi – ?’

‘If either of them find out that the Court of Admirals conducted this project…’ The Admiral interrupts you, before trailing off himself.

‘It’s surprising that neither of them found out about Yamato and Musashi taking part in this.’ You sigh heavily. ‘I thought that the Fairies would have – Admiral?’

‘The Shamans were practically kicked out of the loop after the Summoning Modules were unable to be restarted. The Fairies… they trust us and have no reason to go after us unless they actually see what we had done… and if or when it happens, I don’t think I want to be there to see the fallout.’ He crosses his arms, looking upwards. ‘It’s a miracle they didn’t haven't thought the worst of us after the last few weeks.'

‘Yeah.’

It's all you can say.

‘Admiral, what can we do?’ You let out an unamused sound. The way things had come across said that there was nothing that the Admiralty could do to change things without giving in to the demands of the Haszad Union; it seemed like The Admiral had resigned himself to an outcome.

‘We have to wait.’ He answers – his tone his heavy and his expression is reluctant. ‘This is bigger than the both of us – and but what you’ve told me, if gone wrong, it’s going to be bigger than anything The Admiralty will be able to handle. So we wait… see what happens.’

‘I know that’s not what you want to say.’ You press on; for a moment you wonder if he’d call to attention the fact that you’d foregone his rank and the honorifics, but all he does is throw you a look of understanding. He knew what you wanted to do… what you expected of him… and just what he had to say to dispel that expectation.

‘It’s not.’ He admits, grumbling and rounding on you. ‘But I want you to trust me on this. We can’t afford to be reckless or stupid – do anything heroic, and it’s liable to blow up in our faces and The Admiralty’s. Doesn’t matter what we feel right now or want to do, right now, what we have to do and what I want you to do, kid, is wait.’

‘You have something in mind?’ You gulp a little – he could be intimidating when he wanted to be, that’s for sure.

‘No.’

‘Then?’

He taps his pipe thoughtfully.

‘Then nothing. Right now, I can’t pull a cord or push a button unless I’m certain this is the best we’re going to get or the worst it’s going to be.’ He says it with reluctance… there’s something hidden there, but you can’t make out what. ‘I know Musashi and Yamato, and if the time span is right… we have a few more days before things really go out of hand.’

Now you frown, puzzled.

‘Admiral, I don’t understand what you’re trying to say.’

‘I’m saying we wait. I’ll wait.’ He says with nod. It’s not a suggestion, and it’s definitely not an order – it’s a call for calm and level heads. ‘I’m not expecting you to be happy with it, you psycho, but it’s what I want you to do.’

You sigh, nodding in return. You suppose that it was all you could do; whatever The Admiral had planned, you’d go with it. The situation had exploded beyond the scope of your understanding, beyond the political penile measurement, there wasn’t much you could comprehend from the actions of either party.

‘What about Nagato?’

She had been the reason for this inquiry in the first place.

‘Tell her that you found Yamato and Musashi… but don’t tell her about what’s going on.’ The Admiral concedes. ‘Tell her that I told you to say that – that way she’ll throw the chair my way instead of yours.’ He sits down.

They could easily declare the coastal areas a no go zone and still live happily.

It ain't that the Union said no, it was that they wanted to reap the benefits of magitech when the Admiralty was explicitly stated to be the only ones to have it. This got them kicked out of the negotiations.

‘Admiral, about the MP scheduling…’

‘What about it?’

‘Well, seeing as the Army’s pulled in for support, I’d like it if we would be able to change our policy on them.’ ‘I’d like to have them open for the Army Officers assigned to the base so they can synchronize their efforts with theirs. If you left it open for the Officers, it’d make things easier for the rest of the town to – ?’

‘Commander, is this out of the kindness of your heart did someone ask you to ask me?’

‘It’s… the second one.’ You concede, sighing. Trust The Admiral to perfectly know where you were coming from.

‘The answer is no.’ He answers, leaning on his chair. ‘I will not allow the divulgence of standing orders and scheduling for usage by a department or body outside of our own. Do you know who else can get ahold of that information if it goes out unchecked?’ He takes an accusatory stance with you, accompanying it with a look of disappointment. ‘You’re not going to tell me you’re going to going through both the routes just like that, are you?’

‘I get that, sir, but as things are, I really think that we can stand to give a little bit of an olive branch to the Army.’ You try to reason. The Major seemed to be all-right… even if he did come off as a little green.

You, of all people, having that kind of stance on him screamed all sorts of irony, really.

‘You ain’t asking for an olive branch, kid, you’re asking for me to sign off on a joint operation.’

The gears in your head click as you realize just what you were asking of The Admiral. No wonder there was so much to

‘I… never thought of it like that, actually.’

‘Two departments have to sign off on a dozen different forms so they know who has jurisdiction where.’ He says matter-of-factly, making you wilt. You’d gone through the motions in your own adventures in paperwork. ‘In an on-going operation like a security detail, a two-way operation between two different bodies that have no connection to each other? It’s like you’re telling me to show the colors of my underwear to my neighbor.’

‘I don’t think it’s… that vivid, sir.’

The Admiral sighs, rubbing his eyelids.

‘How about this, Commander?’ He offers. ‘I’ll keep the information within the MP jurisdiction… but I’ll assign MPs to guide the Army support on the timetable.’

He follows up with a stern look.

‘If not, I’ll have you take responsibility for any fallout from this decision. I’ll bear the responsibility, but if things go down, I’m going after your ass, if you wanna leave it open to both sides.’

>‘I’ll go with your suggestion then, sir.’ (Keep the MP schedules private to the MPs, but increase MP workload) END TASK

Yea, they wanted to get the knowledge of the fairies and use it on their own stuff.

>‘Oh, that’s a misconception.’ Taigei educates you. ‘See, Basilius and the Haszad Union could not come to terms with how the power of the fairies would be used. The Government of Haszad was especially annoyed that… they wouldn’t be allowed to… benefit from the Admiralty’s progress.’

>Taigei smirks as the words sink into your head.

>‘Benefit?’

>You find yourself angry – angrier than you would have thought yourself to be before. They had lost millions in the last fifteen years of war against a foe that they wouldn’t have stood a chance against without the Shamans or the Fairies… and that was what the Haszad Union wanted? Benefits? Their oceans were being swallowed by a dark tide, their coasts turned into mass graves and the one thing that they had on their minds was how they could gain from the deal? You feel your veins popping – your prosthetic clenches as you grit your teeth, feeling the urge to just sock someone in.

>Taigei, reading the mood, thankfully moves away from you, resting her form against the desk.

>‘They wanted the fairies to share their knowledge with them as much as they did the Admiralty and the Shamans. The Shamans, therefore Basilius, refused to comply and thus decided that they were not needed – lest that knowledge fall into the wrong hands.’ She says, her face for the first time taking a stern expression. ‘Which is why the Vanzer Kingdom and the others were given permission to contact the fairies.’ She snorts. ‘So you see, they didn’t refuse – they were in fact, kicked out of the talks. They were only allowed to say that much at the gathering of the League of Nations to save face.’

‘I’ll go with your suggestion then, sir.’ You concede. As much as you liked The Major and wanted to help him, you did see that why The Admiral wanted to take this particularly step… you wouldn’t have liked it if someone stepped on your jurisdiction, either. ‘If you think that’s the best course of action, sir, I’ll have no objections to it.’

‘Very well, then.’ He says formally, getting to his feet.‘If that’s all, Commander, I’ll take my leave.’

‘Yes, sir.’ You get to your feet yourself – the evening was fast fading… and with your business done with the Admiral for the day, you hope to get a few more things done.

The Admiral gives you a curt nod, tidying himself up with a few brushes. He gives the place a once over before turning back to you, regarding you professionally.

‘There’ll be a letter on your desk tomorrow on the joint MP patrols – just to confirm your proposal… expect a visit from the Head of MP Operations to go with it.’

You fight down a grimace – The Head of MP Operations, The Chief, had been one of the last people you would’ve liked to deal with, but given the context… you suppose that it was an inevitable result.

‘I thought the whole point was for me to not be held liable?’ You question, half-joking.

‘You’re not being held liable.’ He regards you with a neutral gaze, popping his wooden pipe into his mouth and smirking. ‘You’re just going to be the poor sap that’s going to tell him that he’s going to have to re-shuffle a schedule when the note comes through because I sure didn’t bring it up.’

Your shoulders droop… figures.

‘Yes, sir.’

‘And before I forget to tell you…’ he goes on, holding his pipe in his hands, ‘from tomorrow onwards, if you want to meet with myself or The Vice-Admiral, Command is going to be moved back to the base – this is going to be the spot for Army operations, so stay clear out of their way unless you have any business with them.’ You nod in understanding. ‘They’re here by the Command of the Lord, so don’t push their buttons anymore than you already did with that Yakuza stunt.’

There’s a small prick in the chest that makes itself known to you as The Admiral says that last part.

‘That’s a little unfair, sir.’

‘Well, it’s one of the reasons they’ve been mobilized here.’ He half-accuses, half jokes. ‘Don’t give them a reason to throw us into the brig.’

‘All right, sir.’

The Admiral makes a move for the exit; he moves the entrance flaps out of the way – outside, you notice that the rain’s picked up since your arrival… not that it appeared to bother your superior one bit.

‘Have a good evening, Commander.’

‘You too, sir.’

And he was gone.

As you step out into the rain, opening your umbrella, you realize that even though you’d seen Fingers a few days back playing detective… you really hadn’t talked to him about how the District was moving along. It’d been passed on to you to look after… and you’d be a poor caretaker to not check up on how things were going. Hailing one of the buggies, you hop in – the weather had taken a turn for the worse, and you didn’t feel like getting anymore wet than you already were.

After zooming through the city for a good 15 minutes, you stop in front of the plaza… to see that the place was now practically devoid of rubble.

You step out of the buggy – whose driver zooms off after a brief salute – and open your umbrella giving an appreciative whistle. It looked a great deal better compared to your last visit; along with the piles of rubble gone, hoisted away, no doubt, leaving clear roads, there were quite a few shops that had been restored to serviceable condition. The only things missing were windows for some of the lots… and while they didn’t look as fancy as they were before, the fact that the place looked further from a ruin compared to last time was a plus.

Out of the corner of your eye, you spy a line of your men, clad in ponchos and queuing up for gruel.

You blink – that wasn’t gruel… that was a shop. A ramen stall with makeshift seats, run by an old woman and a middle-aged man, pouring hot broth from under the awning. You also notice that it wasn’t just your men in line, either… there were a few children, some apprehensive-looking women, too, all lined up for their portion.

Things were beginning to pick up around here.

‘Hey, Boss!’

Fingers, clad in a grey poncho, waves at you using a clipboard, jumping off the small, raised wall and running up to you, grinning widely. He gestures to the ramen stall proudly, puffing his chest.

OUR FIRST MERCHANT!

‘I’m impressed.’ You really are. ‘That you guys were able to get all this done in a few days is incredible.’

‘The Army guys gave some cement for us to work on… and with the Fairies helpin’ out, we’ve been able ta pull things up as well as we can!’ He gestures, again, to the Ramen Stand. ‘We’re not rollin’ in it, but peeps knowin’ that we got things on the ball… it’s encouragin’, yeah? Like you want it ta be?’

‘Yeah.’

‘Well, we’ve had about 6 new staff since you last checked and the Jii-san there gives us… 1 store.’ He shows you the pad. ‘If you wanna place them, you can do it now – if not, they’re just gonna be doin’ general stuff..’

‘What do you mean by general stuff?’

‘Runnin’ errands and the like… but they won’t be helpin’ out with the District directly.’

‘Did we make any money?’ You inquire.

‘Yeah, we did, actually, Boss!’

YOU RECEIVED 45,000 YEN!

That’s not a lot, you think to yourself, I think that’s what I used to make in a week in the kitchens

Every time ya get a new Merchant, you’ll be entitled to a large sum downpayment.. Otherwise, you’ll only be getting between 3 to 15 percent of the merchant’s initial sum.’ Fingers explains. You take it all in, nodding; that did make sense. ‘I gotta warn ya, though, if your delinquency rate is too high, the lower your gross will be. Sometimes, you might even get not get it at all if the Merchant isn’t happy. Merchants have different levels of delinquency they’re okay with… as we get more people around, we’re gonna have a Hell of a time tyin’ ta gauge what they like and don’t like, I tell ya what.’

Fingers grins.

‘That is, if you’re able to actually to bring anymore people in.’

He only grins wider.

‘What do you suggest?’

As Fingers had been around the place longer than you had been… maybe it’d give you a better view on things if you could get reasonable information off him to work with. The last thing you wanted was for the place to fall back into ruin again. He thins his lips, raising the pad. Around you, the rain continues to fall, prompting you to raise your hand so as to protect the document in Fingers’s hands as he explains the details to you.

‘Well, in my opinion, Boss… you got way too much on security detail.’ He points to a circle with a few dots in it with his index finger, nodding at you. ‘I understand you’re kinda paranoid, but ya might wanna tone down on the protectiveness; we’re not even set up proper yet and you’re pushing way too much on that front.’

‘I’ll take that into consideration.’ You answer briskly, before smirking at your subordinate. ‘But considering the company, can you blame me?’

He holds his chest in mock hurt.

‘Ouch, right where it hurts, huh?’

The both of you share a chuckle; you then motion for him to continue, which he does. You huddle closer, looking at a few struck names or titles upon the pad, along with a green marker circling a name, which you realize is the Ramen Stall owner’s name.

‘In terms of recruitment, you’re good in terms of bringing in more hands to work, but we could use a little more in terms of, ya know, people advertisin’ for more merchants and the like – you’re not doing badly on that one,’ he concedes, shrugging a little, ‘but maybe a little adjustment can be used to up things up a little, if ya get what I’m saying.’

‘Aren’t you the articulate one today?’ You snort.

‘Rain makes my head cool down.’ Fingers answers, grinning widely. ‘Makes me think better – that’s what my Ma used ta say, anyway.’

‘I’m leaning towards believing her on that front.’

You really are.

Very funny, Boss.’ Fingers points to a smiley face drawn at the corner with a small number next to it with several question marks. ‘Ya also could use a little more when it comes to keepin’ the folks happy, but it’s not so much a worry, seein’ as we just got out first merchant… but it’s just something you’d like ta consider, ya know, if ya wanna adjust things?’

‘I’ll keep that in mind.’ You answer crisply. Maybe you should switch things around a little.

Fingers then indicates several numbers on the side, each corresponding to a respective date.

‘We got trouble makers, but they’re nothing to worry about. As things are, we’re progressing slowly, though.’ He pulls back the pad. ‘And you have 6 unassigned guys. I think I already told ya this.’

You hand the pad back to Fingers, who nods. The rain begins to slow down as the both of you make your way to one of the shops that had been cleared – it’s an empty floor now, but maybe soon there’ll be another shop here. With the way things had turned out, you hope that the district starts bringing people in again. Considering that the place was once a lively commercial center, it was rather jarring to see it like this the last few visits. You turn to look outside at the masses queuing up for a hot bowl – you’re tempted to get one for yourself, but the line was just too long – and you didn’t have time to dawdle while you still had things on your mind.

‘That’s it, Boss?’

Finger shakes you from your reverie; you give him a nod in return.

‘Ya know, Boss, some of the guys – some of us – have been kinda worried about you lately.’

‘Really?’ You let out a small laugh. You’d been barely in the post and you were already drawing concerns.

‘Yeah, ya know… about your weight.’ He points to your gut, prompting you to raise a hand to your stomach almost in reflex. ‘We don’t think you’re eating well; we think ya should, ya know, consult a dietician or somethin’; The Admiralty don’t take care of it’s Commanders or somethin’?’

You blink – that’s probably the first time in your life that you’d ever had someone point that out to you so explicitly. You’d had people make fun of your posterior and your gut before… but this was the first time someone that wasn’t one of your KanMusu had pointed out the option of seeking real, professional help on the subject of your bulk. It was a little touching to know that Fingers and your crew held concerns about your eating practices.

‘I’ve been cutting down on food.’ You manage gruffly… and a little defensively. You had been cutting down on food quite a bit ever since you were admitted to the MASH; the scuffle with the last boss had put you in a position that deprived you of any semblance of junk food. Even now, you find, the way things were, meals were scarce and simple… but enough to keep you going. ‘There’s not exactly anywhere I can go for a gourmet shovel-by-the-pound, you know.’

‘We’re just sayin’… it’s not just what ya eat, it’s how ya eat.’ He declares knowledgeably. ‘If ya don’t take care, ya can end up a diabetic – and that almost never ends well for guys your size.’

‘Guys my size?’

You give him a flat look.

‘Ya heard me.’

Irako’s worried voice echoes in your head like a bell as you turn to Fingers. You had put it off long enough, but it was time to sort this mess out; Fingers and his letter was probably the most frightening object in all the land – and you held it in your back pocket in the event you would have the chance to confront him about it. You move to hand it over to him, but relent; it was best to break the news slowly. The last thing you wanted was for your subordinate to assume the worst had happened.

You snort at the thought – that letter probably was the worst that could have happened.

‘Fingers… about that letter…’

His face goes red. Immediately, your subordinate clutches his face, looking away from you in a manner not unlike a shy teenage girl; seeing the whole thing happen, you can’t help but feel a desire to take a stick and knock your bald, self-proclaimed Number Two back to reality… and maybe in the process restore some thought in that noggin of his. How he had thought that horrible prose to be anything but the stuff of nightmares was beyond you.

‘D – Did you read it, Boss?’

‘Yes, I did.’ You roll your eyes, your good one and the one under your eyepatch, as Fingers crouches on the floor, clutching his head, his back to you. You rub your temples, feeling your ire rising. ‘Fingers…’

‘I – I told you not ta, Boss!’ He practically squirms, clutching himself as he throws a look over his shoulder back at you. ‘N – Now you’re gonna think I’m some big softy that thinks of kittens and sews dolls or somethin’!

You feel yourself go agape at his assumption.

That was utter nonsense. If anything, your respect and fear for him had grown tenfold since reading that letter – he could be the next potent source of anti-Abyssal weaponry if the Fairies ever decided to throw humanity to the wolves. They’d have a statue made of him in every city – and every poem on every plaque.

Please. No.

‘Fingers, I didn’t open your letter.’ You answer honestly. ‘Irako got your message… and showed it to me.’

He instantly springs to his feet, running over to you and giving you a good shake. For someone that was practically a skeleton with skin over it, he had remarkable strength.’

‘She got it?’ He inquires joyfully.

‘Yes, she… got it.’ You manage, despite all the shaking. ‘She wanted me to… find out who wrote it… to her.’

‘Did ya tell her?’ He’s barely an inch away from you. In annoyance, you push his face away and back off… not that I changed his suddenly-sunny disposition.

‘No, I didn’t.’

Did she like it?

You sigh, pinching the bridge of your nose.

‘She thinks that you’re trying to murder her.’ You answer, honestly. Right now, you were thinking more about Irako’s reaction than Fingers’s feelings on the matter.

Your subordinate’s face instantly looks crestfallen, his mouth agape in disbelief. You can see tears out of the corners of his eyes, very much hurt at the words; he grows more distressed by the moment… and you wonder, at least for a bit, if Fingers did understand that what he did was a terrible – and horrible – attempt. With it laid out there, you decide that you can proceed from here. You make a motion towards him to assure him that the both of you could work on his – !

EH? WHY?!

On pure reflex, you raise your prosthetic… and chop him on his shiny, bald head.

‘Of course she’s gonna think that! What kind of reaction did you think you were gonna get with that damned thing?’ You practically roar at Fingers’s downed form. He clutches his head, a look of betrayal making its way onto his features.

‘What’re ya talkin’ about, Boss?’ Fingers looks up at you, pouting and tearful, his face scrunched in confusion.

‘I can’t believe you – here!’

You take out the black envelope from your back pocket, shoving it underneath his nose. Fingers’s face only scrunches in confusion as he takes it from you, getting to his feet and taking the damnable letter from its seal. He flips open the piece of paper, muttering under his breath as he reads through it at a breakneck pace, before frowning in your direction.

‘Eh? This is the letter I – ?’

‘Read it out loud!’ You cross your arms, demanding him to do so. ‘Now!’

Fingers’s face immediately turns red and he almost falls over from the command. He looks from the letter to you, then back to the letter and back to you, as if trying to comprehend the reality of the situation. You refused to believe that anyone could be so stupid, so moronic to think that the words in that so-called love letter could qualify as anything but the chanting mantra of a vicious curse.

‘Ya serious? I can’t – !’

‘Read it!’ You point your finger at him, growling.

Fingers glares at you, pursing his lips. Again, he looks to the letter… and again, he looks back to you, his cheeks morphing from their bright red hue to their embarrassed purple. After a moment, he finally concedes, and muttering under his breath, raises it to his nose. He clears his throat as he prepares to say the first words, but not before throwing one last glare at you.

I – Irako-san, I wanna smell ya hair… I wanna know ya so we – !

‘See? Right there.’ You immediately cut him off, moving right next to him and tapping that particular sentence on the letter. You pull back almost immediately – your finger felt unclean from the mere instant it made contact with the horrible thing.

‘Right where what?’ Fingers squints, holding the paper close for a better look.

‘You just wrote about how you wanted to smell her hair!’ You shrill.

Fingers crosses his arms, cheeks red, turning his nose up at you.

‘O – O’ course I do! That’s what’s romantic, right? Cuddlin’ in a corner, sniffin’ ya girls hair with yer arms ‘round her.’

You look around to see if there was somewhere you could smash your own head in – the logic behind that kind of wording… it was so twisted that you can’t even find your own words to explain to him that that sort of thing just didn’t fly. After taking a moment to calm yourself down, muttering under your breath yourself, you turn to Fingers again, gesturing to the letter.

‘Read on.’

‘But – !’

‘Read on!’ You insist, raising your voice.

Fingers grumbles, but he complies.

… Make me smile… I want to know you more ‘n more ‘n more… I want you so badly… yer cheeks are so red like blood when a bat smashes ‘a face in a dark alley…

‘THERE! RIGHT THERE!’ You cry out in an almost triumphant voice, flicking the corner of

‘Sheesh, Boss, what’s the problem there?’

You look at him, your jaw slacking. Yes, there was a problem there! There is also one in that noggin!

‘Too fluffy, huh?’

You count backwards from 10, reminding yourself that despite everything that had been thrown your way, you’d at least managed to come out from it alive and all the wiser. Plucking the letter from his hands with a forced smile.

‘Fingers, you just talked about how her cheeks are as red as blood from the face in a dark alley.’ You grit your teeth. ‘What the Hell were you thinking writing this?’

‘Well, excuse me, Boss!’ Fingers huffs, as if you had been the unreasonable one here. ‘But name me one thing redder than blood squirting from a freshly smashed-in face.’ You can think of many things, in fact! ‘That’s right, ain’t nothin’ out there, yeah?’ ‘I’m just tryin’ ta get across how cute her cheeks are.’ ‘An’ me sayin’ I wanna break in more faces there… that’s about me wantin’ nothin’ more than to pinch her cheeks – I’d break more faces for ‘em, see?’

‘Fingers…’ You laugh – the madness was beginning to overtake you; you can feel it, calling, knocking, ‘ you’re talking about how you want her to hold your physical, beating, bloody heart and that you’re scared of how people will know.’

‘O’ - O’ course I am! I got feelings too, ya know!’ He blushes, pressing his fingers together, looking left and right, as if there would be an ambush. ‘If the guys find out that I’m such a romantic… oh look at me, Boss, I’m blushin’ fer reals now!’

He clutches his cheeks, smiling dopily.

This paragraph here explicitly details on how you want to pump her womb and make her bear your children!!’ You hope he could at least see that? ‘Fatherly lust, yet, Fingers?’

Fingers looks at you, incredulous. Maybe now you would be able to get somewhere.

‘What, Boss, come on, ya can’t be that naive!’ He snickers, pointing at you.

Me? Naive?

He crosses his arms, taking a superior tone.

‘Yeah, I mean, it’s progression, ya know… ya tell the girl ya like her… she likes ya back… and then ya go ahead and make babies.’ He says, huffing proudly. ‘I mean, Boss, ya gotta know that sex makes kids, right, sperm swims up the uterus and meets the ovum and the womb gets – !’

‘I GET IT!’

‘Fatherly lust is normal, innit?’ He says in an annoyed tone. It looks like he was trying to imitate a teacher that was explaining a simple mathematical equation to a child. ‘I mean, when I do it with the mother of my kid, that makes me a dad, right? And me wanting to have more kids is a fatherly thing, right? That’s just science!’

A strangled sound leaves your throat.

Kill him. Kill him before he propagates.

‘Keep.’ You manage, shoving the letter into his chest violently. ‘Reading.’

‘Sheesh; yer in a bad mood today…’ He mutters, just loud enough for you to hear, raising the letter to his face and squinting again. ‘Don’t ya think ‘a yer dream man, Irako-san, don’t ya think of him everyday … I wanna be him for ya, I wanna turn ‘em into meat fer the factories … I wanna be part of ya that’ll never leave … it makes me explode that ta think of it like that … I think ya’d make a beautiful fireworks when ya explode – !

‘Stop.’ You say calmly, letting out a breath. ‘Now, explain to me, sentence by sentence, what you mean by each and every one of those words.’

‘That I wanna be her dream man, of course!’ He hits a fist into his chest, grinning widely. ‘I mean, I know I ain’t much, but I know I can at least protect her from the slimeballs that think she’s anythin’ less than the cutest angel this side ‘a town! Turnin’ ‘em into meat for the factories is what I’m willin’ ta do with my fists here if they decide she’s anythin’ but!’

‘And the part about her turning into a firework and exploding?’ You close your eyes, bracing yourself for the answer.

‘Fireworks are pretty!’ He says happily.

Quick. There are no witnesses. Everyone that will find out will be too loyal to question your action!

Something inside you breaks – shatters –

‘Ah, I get it…’ You laugh, a kind smile making its way upon your features. The gears whirr and click as your world swirls and mixes, dull and dark, as you finally see things through the eyes of your subordinate ‘This… is how you show your love, isn’t it?’

‘Oh, Boss, you do get me after all!’ He cheerfully whoops, grinning in embarrassment.

‘The description of Irako exploding like a firework… is a metaphor to how brilliant she is, isn’t it?’

‘Yeah!’ He acknowledges, frantically nodding.

‘And how you want to fill her womb with your fatherly lust…’ You chuckle, rubbing the back of your neck as you approach Fingers. ‘Is how you want to tie your future with hers and make beautiful children that are symbols of your toil and love, correct?’

‘Yeah!’ He confirms again, nodding even more enthusiastically.

‘And the thing about how blood meeting with a wooden bat in an alley…’ You sigh, a heavy weight leaving your being. You giggle right after, your one good eye almost closed from the sheer strain from your upturned lips. ‘Is how you you think her cheeks are so cute, right?’

‘Yeah!’ Fingers hops over to you, grabbing both your hands and hopping in place like and enthusiastic rabbit. There is a shine in his eyes that you’d only seen in children, happily giggling. ‘Boss, you really do get me!’

‘Fingers…’ You chuckle, throwing your head back.

And throw your head forward in a headbutt hard enough to shatter a dam.

Fingers instantly curls himself up, holding his head as he lets out a low howl of pain – your face morphs into the visage of frustration and fury; you can feel your veins popping at the very thought of the lunacy. Your lungs gather all they can as you adopt

THAT’S NOT HOW IT GOES, YOU MORON!

You put your hands on your hips, advancing upon his downed form with a righteous snarl.

‘WHAT ARE YOU, SOME KIND OF IDIOT?! OF COURSE SHE’S NOT GOING TO THINK OF ANY OF THAT WHEN SHE GOES THROUGH THE DAMN THING WORD FOR WORD! DO YOU KNOW HOW IT READS UNDER THE BREATH, FINGERS? IT FEELS LIKE I’M UTTERING A MANTRA OF DAMNATION!’ Fingers cowers at your words, but you don’t let up. If this was the only way to get it through to your admittedly helpful Number Two, this was how it was going to go. ‘DO YOU WANT ME TO READ IT REALLY FAST, FINGERS? BECAUSE I CAN READ IT REALLY FAST. YOU TELL ME IF IT SOUNDS LIKE A CURSE OR NOT! SHE THINKS YOU HAVE IT OUT FOR HER!’

Fingers actually does look remorseful now, his eyes downcast as he sits on the ground.

‘B – But – !’

‘BUT WHAT?!’ You boom loudly.

‘What’s the point of trying really hard if you’re not even on the same page?’

You groan, bringing your head to your temples – as soon s the words left your mouth, Fingers automatically went into a sobbing, curled up mess, muttering apologies over and over again. Perhaps you had been harder on him than you should’ve been – after all you had been a bigger loser than he was back when you were in school. The loner that never got himself picked; the loser that blew his chance when he could’ve made it big but ultimately shat the bed; the young man who looked himself in the mirror and lied 8 times out of 10 that he tried…

‘Fingers, I’m not trying to crap on your feelings, but Irako was really, really frightened by it.’ You answer, calmly and honestly. ‘You’re lucky she came to me first – if she’d gone to one of the MPs, we’d have a fully-fledged criminal investigation on our hands.’

‘Sorry…’ He manages, rubbing his lips.

‘Look, I’m sorry I yelled at you.’ You take a softer tone, sighing heavily as you take the letter from the ground. ‘But you need to understand… that just doesn’t fly.’

‘But I was tryin’ my best ta be romantic, really!’ There’s honesty in his voice, and you can tell he didn’t mean any more harm in it than a child did breaking his toys. Still, you had to get the point across, lest he crash and burn even worse next time.

‘Where’d you get this idea of romantic from?’

‘That film, ya know? The one where the girl gets her blood sucked and the guy is some kinda glass monster or somethin’?’

You blink – you remembered that film all too well. You remembered back in school when the girls were giggling packs of moronic idiocy and the boys were trying to get into it in the hopes of appealing to the fairer sex. Bringing a hand to your temples, you try to push out the memories; of all the things Fingers had used as a reference point, it had to be that. You may not be a romantic at heart, but you’re at least confident that you wouldn’t scare a girl off.

Mostly. Maybe.

‘Fingers…’ You brush your knees. ‘We’re going to have to work with your delivery.’

‘What’re ya suggestin’?’ He raises an eyebrow, looking up at you.

‘I dunno what I’m going to do just yet, but before anything else, we’re going to sort this out.’ You give the piece of paper in your hands a good smack.

‘I’m listenin’.’

You raise a hand to your chin, thinking… and immediately an idea strikes.

‘Think about what you want Irako to admire about you… and write it all down.’

‘Eh?! That’s a little – !’

‘Do that… and tomorrow afternoon, come to the barracks.'

‘Sure, Boss.’ He lets out a defeated sigh.

‘Good.' The both of you trade salutes. 'Carry on.’

You turn on your heel, eager to reach the barracks before it was too dark.

The rain had completely subsided by the time you’d reached the barracks.

Although it would’ve been a more prudent decision to wait for a buggy, you’d elected to take a walk – after skipping on gym sessions, you hadn’t been able to get as much exercise as you could have – and should have. Fingers’s casual remark had affected you a bit… maybe you could afford to drop a few more pounds. Just because you had a noticeable decrease in width didn’t mean that you could just stop there. You enter the compound and approach the door, opening it and entering the hallway.

It was dark in the hallway – there was no one else back yet. Flicking a light on the wall, you set the umbrella to the side of the room, heading upstairs. After all that exposure to the rain, you suppose you could do with a shower to get yourself clean. The stairs creaks as they feel your weight upon them – and given the atmosphere and the setting dusk, it creeped you out… a little, at least. Reaching the top of the stairs, you move to flick the lights on the upper floor on – after a few blinks, they come on as well… save for one bulb, which dies immediately after.

‘Maybe I’ll call maintenance again… not that I can actually complain.’ You mutter to yourself. Indeed, compared to the rest of the town, you lived in luxury – never mind that the place was a converted storehouse of sorts; at least you had space.

You make your way to your room, turning the knob and pushing it open. Closing the door, you sit on the chair, unbuttoning your top. The events of the day hit you like punches to the gut – Yamato and Musashi’s incarceration stand out among the lot, though… your thoughts turn to The Admiral, trying to guess just what he had in mind. The whole thing was a mess; when you’d joined The Admiralty, the last thing you’d expected was political intrigue of this magnitude – the most you would have thought would happen was maybe a few scuffles with the higher-ups, but going up against the might and bureaucracy of a whole nation? That was well beyond your scope and expectation. Not to mention how Nagato would take it… how you would tell her.

Your friends are alive and that’s all I’m going to say about that.

You’re not sure if you could be so heartless to throw that out there with a straight face.

Grunting, you get to your feet and begin to strip, throwing your garments to the corner before wrapping a towel around your waist and exiting to the corridor and down to the shower; you always thought better when you were under calmer circumstances… and a shower would –

‘Hey.’

You stop in your tracks, a foot into the bathroom as you turn to see the owner of the voice.

It’s unmistakeable. Nagato, clad in her usual wear, stands before you, an amused smile on her lips – one you could see even in the darkness of the corridor. You open your mouth to say something, but find that words failed the elation that you felt at seeing her out and about. She looks a little bit fatigued, her hair a little wet – from going through the rain, no doubt – but otherwise, she was, once again – on Akashi’s terms, at least – back in the saddle.

‘Welcome back.’ Is all you can manage. You feel a little awkward saying it, going through the motions that you were… but a feeling of relief does tinge your words.

‘Commander.’ She bows respectfully. ‘It’s good to be back.’

She gestures to your towel right after, smirking.

‘Early shower?’

‘Hm?’ You look down, letting out a small snicker before looking back up at her again. ‘Yeah – been running around in the rain… not healthy to do this without a nice, hot rain to wash my head after. Can’t risk a cold the way things are.

Nagato hums, her eyes scanning you for… something.

‘Odd.’

‘What’s odd?’ You frown.

‘Showering without soap or shampoo.’ She snickers – you’d completely forgotten about that.

‘I’ll join you.’ Nagato offers, turning around before you could decline or accept, making her way to her room.

Deciding that there was no way that you would be able to get yourself clean with just hot water, you make your way back to your room and Kaga’s. The shampoo and shower gel issued was right there by the side of the mattress for you to pick up – right where you’d left it and always would. There’s a bit of relief that comes over you again… mooching from Kaga for so long had been a bad habit, and as much as you liked the luxury of a delicately scented wash, it felt rather awkward putting women’s shampoo all over you for so long.

Tucking both of them under your armpit, you rush down the lit corridor to the bathroom, throwing your towel on a rack and turning one of the shower knobs on.

The sound of footsteps hits your ear – you turn to the right to see your Sub-Commander, fully stripped of her clothing, making her way to her own stall and turning on the shower. As she turns her back to you, you can’t help but notice the many scars on her back… you hadn’t seen them before, even when the both of you – the three of you, Takao included – had shared that night. On her toned stomach, you see another scar – a small, pale, faded gash…

You turn away, leaning your head against the partition.

‘Can’t stand to look at me?’

You practically toss your neck out to meet the accusation, opening your mouth to retort that you would never.

‘I’m joking.’ She giggles, throwing you a coy smile.

‘Did Akashi give you anything special for recovery?’

The both you step under your respective showers. Nagato immediately turns to you as she tosses her hair over her shoulder, revealing her sizable assets for you to see… not that you were interested, of course, at the moment – if Akashi did leave anything of note, heeding them would be under the threat of pain and death. Akashi, of course, would administer both; that, and the fact that Nagato’s leaving of her care so quickly had you deciding not to risk her wrath.

Your shower companion looks thoughtful, bringing a finger to her lips.

‘No, but she did give you some standing orders.’

‘I’m all ears.’ You quickly reply.

Nagato smirks, bending towards you, her eyes narrowed into slits.

‘You are to listen to my every whim for the next two weeks and fulfill every fantasy of mine, cater to my every need and heed my every command.’ She says in a teasing voice, a tone dripping with honey drowned out by the pitter-patter of the hot shower.

You roll your eyes, pouring a palmful of shampoo and turning away from her.

Very funny.’

Nagato gasps, dramatically, making you turn around. Here you were genuinely worried… and there she was joking around. A part of you missed the Nagato that was always behind the desk and keeping things running liked clockwork, this teasing persona of hers never failed to keep you off –

‘How bold, Commander… defying Akashi’s words.’ She places a hand on her chest, throwing a false, lop-sided smile.

You instantly stiffen, turning your head to her. Had it been… true?

‘Come on.’ She opens her arms wide, expectantly waiting for you to move into them.

You sigh… even if they weren’t Akashi’s orders, you really can’t afford to say no to her. You’d learn one day – you tell yourself that much – but for now, you’re all right, more than all right, letting yourself fall into her embrace. Nagato holds you firmly, nuzzling your neck and planting a soft kiss, one that makes you let out a small

I missed this.’ She says softly, running her hands down your back.

Pulling back, you raise an eyebrow at her.

‘You missed being held by some fat guy who could really use a shave?’ You smirk, amused at the very idea. ‘I’m usually on the bottom of desire lists for potential boyfriends – somewhere between snobs in fancy hats and corny masks and guys with self-hating issues.’

Nagato slaps your chance. You wince – there’s a bit of force in there.

‘You’re more than my boyfriend. You’re my Commander.’ She frowns, tapping your chin as she smirks herself. ‘3 weeks of this and you still find it hard to grasp.’ Her nose touches your chin. ‘It’s enough to turn a girl off.’

You feel a small, honest smile, creep onto your features. The emotions rush over you as the droplets of water do; you feel lighter and heavier, grounded and free at the same time, holding this strong, wild, loving woman in your arms. As you feel her touch on your back, delicate and rough, you can’t feel anything but safe, assured… that whatever happened, it was going to be all right because she was here.

You pull back again, sighing in content.

‘You know… I don’t know if it’s just the sad sack in me talking or anything, but… thank you.’

‘For what?’ She laughs lightly, giving you a confused smile.

‘For giving me a chance.’ You answer truthfully. You bite your lip, hesitant to continue. ‘I know that I’m not the best guy to look at or the most pleasant of company, but I’m glad that you were willing to take a chance on me… even if you didn’t have to. Nagato, I’ve… I’ve never felt as wanted as person as you’ve made me feel. You, the rest of the Division… I wouldn’t have been able to give myself that push to be better than I am now, to actually try to be someone that mattered. I’m not trying to speak from the ego, or trying spout any cliches; I’m just happy that for once, someone’s expecting me to get back through the front door… and Heaven help me, I never thought I would’ve expected to actually be so happy to wait for you… and them… to come home, safe and sound.’

Nagato stutters, speechless as she looks right into your eyes.

‘I was scared when I almost lost you.’ You say it with conviction, acceptance. ‘Not in the way that a… Commander loses his Second-In-Command, but – !’

Nagato raises a hand to your lips, gently pressing against them as she looks away, her cheeks red. Her body, every contour, muscle and curve, presses against you. You can feel her warmth between your legs, her thighs running along yours, her red eyes filled with fear and embarrassment, refusing to meet you where every other part of hers had.

‘Don’t say things you can’t back up.’ She says quietly. You open your mouth to say something in return… but hear the joking tone – and the challenge – in her voice.

You slowly close the distance…

A shriek catches both your attentions – still holding each other, the both of you turn to the gap in the partition, where you see – by all the grace and blessings of bad timing – Iowa. She raises her hands defensively, slowly backing away as you – and Nagato come back down.

Iowa?!’ Nagato gapes, turning to you, then back to her. ‘What’s she – ?’

P – Please enjoy yourselves!’ She trots away, leaving you with your Sub-Commander.

Nagato wears the most frightening smile, her grip on your forearms bordering on painful.

>>674949
That'll be up to you, of course.
>>
By the way, before I forget, I'd like some feedback, again, since we've reached the end of this portion of the Quest.
>>
>>675005
Have to say, this is the single coziest KanColle quest I've ever been in. Not sure if you set out to do that, but the high amounts of downtime and focus on social interaction certainly make it so.

That said, I'm not exactly sure what LEIA's supposed to do, we've got so many running tasks that we forget some of them (like the theft investigation) and so many side characters that some of them seem to rarely have screentime anymore (e.g. the VA)
>>
>>675103
Firstly, I thank you for the compliment. I don't set out to do anything other than to give my Table the best experience it can, even if, at times, it falls short.

On the side characters: Don't worry. It's a warfront and everyone is busy. If you started dropping in on your Officers too often, they'd start questioning whether you're doing your work. You can see them any time you want, barring chance encounters, although I may start putting in trios if people feel like we're ignoring too much of the cast or having the KanMusu acquainted with non-KanMusu characters showing up together to make things simpler.

On the worldbuilding, I like how it's introduced to us piece by piece, often in some way with relation to us readers. Like, the Union gets introduced in-story with relevance to us learning about who has Yamato and Musashi, or how Vanzer is introduced just before we gotta rescue somebody from the Vanzer Kingdom
>>
>>675141
>Readers
I seriously hope I don't have too many of these, no offense. The one thing that separates normal literature and Questing is the interactivity and the line between QM and Quester. If I have readers, that means peeps are content reading the story and not taking part.

And I'm glad you like how the world-building is going.

>If I have readers, that means peeps are content reading the story and not taking part
A general rule is that, for the number of voters you get, there's usually three times as many just lurking

Then again, this quest has a screwy update schedule so that might turn a lot of people off
>>
>>675168
I usually run in packets of 6 hours and 4 hours respectively. That, and the Connection Errors at times just piss me off enough to just walk away at times when I want to post. The last few days have been fine save for that part where I found out my country banned 4chan and I had to do a roundabout.
>>
If anyone has any questions - as long as they don't break the meta - or suggestions on roll rules, I'm all ears here until we break Page 6-7.
>>
>>675189
How long do you expect Shipgirl Commander to run? Do you see it becoming as long-running as Banished Quest or Ryukuza Quest?
>>
>>675203
I'll run it as long as it keeps being fun for people - or until the Soft Game Over. My Call of Cthulhu group ended - everyone dead - and our next GM rotation won't be until next year. I'm not an FOTM guy and I'm not running this for attention, so you don't have to worry at me "dropping" it from a lack of popularity - that I can assure you.

Or if I die. That tends to happen.

Or if 4chan dies as was foretold in /qa/. If that happens I'm going to have to find an alternative point of publishing.

>Soft Game Over
You mean, when we die?
>>
>>675240
Every time a KanMusu dies under your command, you will have a saving roll. The DC will rise with every death. I won't tell you how it goes until you actually reach the point you'll have to roll a save.

You mean, if we fail the saving roll, they die and the DC to save next time is higher? That means that, if we'd failed on rolling for Nagato, the DC rises for the next saving roll, or does that not count because she'd have lived anyway? I assume that, following XCOM logic, we also get replacements for dead shipgirls? Or does the quest end when we lose too many girls that we wind up officially discharged?
>>
>>675391
Something like the last one. Like I said, you'll have to lose a Shipgirl to see what happens.
>>
>>675423
How about nope. Like hellwd'd let one of our girls die so easily like that.
>>
>>675724
Well of course we don't want them to die, but if we fuck up so bad/dice gods hate us so bad that multiple shipgirls get killed under our command, the only reason the Admiralty would have for not kicking us out would be seniority/skill gained from a lot of victories compared to defeats
>>
>>675423
just a question, if we game over would you post notes on the setting and characters? they are pretty interesting, but if we die or something...
>>
>>677167
Sure. I see no harm in that if you guys fail to reach the Endgame.
>>
>>677205
Hey, just rereading some of the setting info you gave us, and I found this:
>Not!Japan won due to its alliance with Not!Germany - Not!Mediterranean states.
Does this mean Taiyouga is still part of the Pact of Steel/not!Axis?
>>
>>677671
It was temporary. There's still some bad blood over Taiyouga's scientists making that viral weapon.
>>
>>680211
So Not!Africa is basically Resident Evil? So we've got Resident Evil, Metal Gear (maybe), and anything else I missed, mixed in with boat girls.
>>
>>680466
It's not Resident Evil.

It's Resident Evil getting beaten back like a bitch because Not!Africans are a Warrior Race. Their whole culture is built on subterfuge and warfare. Children, adults, teenagers are all made for war - not in the way that Warlords torture people, but in the way that - and the rest of the world doesn't understand - they're so ingrained in it. Think of their continent as Cadia of 40k, only instead of at the doorstop of Chaos, they turn on each other. The viral weapon was meant to make a decisive victor, but all it did was turn up as a footnote that took >6million.

Postin' from Area 11 just because.

>>680580

Is that why africa stands untouched and not in an aliance?
>>
>>680592
Your pic's upside down.

But in a way, it's like this... The rest of the world has found out the hard way that to be involved in that continent's scuffles is a good way to find yourself humiliated. They're huge and they breed like babies and don't have much of a maritime culture, so they don't give a shit about anything outside of it. They have radio and weaponry and resources - boy, do they have resources - but they're so ingrained in rebellion that every time a new warlord pops up the next day there's another war. The League of Nations has essentially cleaned their hands - Taiyouga were the last to step in and look to remain to be the last ones to do so.

Question, is the KanMusu "cannot hurt people" rule a blanket rule making them unable to hurt anybody, or a more technical rule that says they can't use superstrength or their guns to hurt people?
