Clean air swirls through market stalls, hanging wind chimes scattering song and sunshine alike as the well-kempt dirt roads of the small town beneath buzz with the everyday hum of commerce underway. Whether it be the farmers with their hens and vegetable or a tailor in desperate need of liquidating his present stock, the tumultuous roar of eager voices broadcasting their wares or requesting them creates a hypnotic din amidst the murmurs of humble patrons debating the cost of today’s cabbage. In the process, the elbows of prospective customers inevitably bump against one another, everyone worth their salt seeking a closer glance at their investments before they buy.

Truly, it’s a merry chaos that fills the market square today, a swarming sea of bodies everywhere the eye can see. That is, save for one particular location amidst the huddled masses. Like a long, winding line drawn through a cluster of ants, wherever it goes, it seems that people inevitably find some other place they’d rather be, shying away from the wake of a most peculiar woman.

Basket in one hand, her child’s palm in the other, she’s much like any other shopper there in function, looking for the lowest price that her purse can afford amidst today’s butter, bread, and baked goods, cured meats and spices taking a second place as she fills her baskets to the brim. In form, however, the gods have decidedly set her apart from your average, foot-shuffling shopper, namely in that in her case, she hasn’t a leg to stand on. Stomach transitioning into a tremendous serpentine body instead, her hair a wreath of serpents, Cassandra was a gorgon, as was the child she held firmly by the hand as she slithered through the chaos, the only way to ensure her wide-eyed wonder wouldn’t see her wandering out of site.

Welcome to Gorgon Child Quest! Where-in you take up the role of a magical talking artifact being wielded by a young gorgon girl named Cici. Living out of the steadily improving remains of a once great dungeon, the game will focus on exploration, character interaction, and learning as the voices of the players within the amulet help guide her along. I may also include a magic system down the line depending on how things go, but we'll see what the future holds.

Cici looks around excitedly at all of the people gathered in the market, at the other kids with their parents buying things, and the animals she’d seen on the farm earlier now lined up in little cages. So, this was what people did every day. She also notices something else out of the corner of her eye, a sort of smaller stall off to the corner of the market in the shade with a sign over it and several small, fuzzy looking forms gathering around a tabby seemingly in the middle of a nap.

<“Kittens for Sale.”> Reads the sign, Cici struggling to sound it out on her own before asking for a bit of help. In the end, her breath catches when she puts two and two together.

>>658814
>>658854

[“B-but…”]

Her expression falls as she realizes the voices are probably right, holding on tighter to Mama’s hand as she continues snaking her way around the market, picking up all sorts of things Cici doesn’t recognize before circling back toward the baker’s shop. There, they find Old Man Guyus apparently already closing his shop up tight.

“I’m sorry Guyus, would it be possible to…” But the old man’s soft laughter cuts Mama off.

“I know what you’re after,” he chuckles. “Same thing as always, or I’ll be a billy goat.”

Now that he mentions it, the beard does look kind of goat-like.

“But you’ll just have to hold yer britches until I get back,” he insists. “Gotta get ingredients to make bread, after all, and Martha’s fit to run me outta business unless I get some eggs and flour for myself.”

“Is that what you make dough out of?” Cici asks, trying to imagine mashing the ingredients together in her head with limit success.

“Aye,” he confirms. “Sugar, flour, water, yeast, eggs, and a little pinch of salt for good measure, that’s how you make good bread. What kind is all in the particulars, though.” Cici seems to be on the verge of formulating another question, but the old man simply smiles as he pats her on the head. “Maybe I can explain some more if you stick around till I get back.”

With a jangle of keys and a gentle whistle, the man’s then on his way toward the market, a wide set gait carrying him along at a leisurely pace.

[“Mama says Din-Din is dumb, but I still like him a lot. Dogs are cute too though.”]

“I guess we should go to the post office first,” she finally confirms. “Maybe some of them know Vivi!”

“Let’s get going then,” Mama says, hand once more securing Cici’s. “I’m sure they won’t mind us coming by just to browse.”

“What’s ‘browsing’, Mama?”

“Well, it’s when you go into a store but don’t buy anything,” she explains.

“Ah, I get it…. I think, but also Mama, where do we get money to buy things from?”

“Hm?” Cassandra questions, raising an eyebrow. “Well… People give other people money for doing something for them, and we aren’t any different. I sell fur from the animals we eat for dinner every now and again for a little bit of money. As for the rest… Well, Mama used to be an adventurer at one point, and she made some money that way.”

“Wow!” Cici breathes, imagining her Mama like some kind of hero in shining armor. “Did you slay a dragon or rescue any princesses?”

Cassandra giggles from behind her hand.

“Not quite,” she says to the bouncing little girl, “but I helped a lot of people and made a lot of friends that way. Now, stop worrying about money, sweetling; we have enough and that’s all that really matters.”

And so, hand in hand they make their way quietly across the town, minimal traffic getting in their way as they approach the aviary that served as the mail harpy post. A simple, slotted box outside is neatly painted with an image of a harpy emblazoned in white against blue, a number of weather vanes clinging to the outer arches and swaying in several directions. However, the pair take just a moment gazing at the outside before making their way within, much to the surprise of the brown owl harpy sitting at the desk.

“Pi~” she chirps, nervously shuffling her wings as she pulls herself up straight and adjusts her coat. “P-Pardon me, ma’am. What might we do today for you and your…. Daughter?”

“I’m Cici!” Cici introduces herself, “and this is my mama. We're browsing!”

“Oh.” She blinks her wide, shiny eyes slowly. “Well, a pleasure to meet you, Cici. My name is Andrea, and this is the Jonasburg mail post.”

“Mhm,” Cici nods along. “An’ Vivi works at the one in the lizard village. Do you know her? Are you friends? Also, how come we never get any mail?”

“My, that’s quite a lot of questions!” the harpy breathes.

“She’s positively full of them today,” Cassandra chuckles helplessly.

“I see, well, I do ‘know’ Vivi. She’s sent a couple of mail items over this way from her outpost. I’d like to get to know her better if we have time, of course, but they keep us very busy with our jobs, you know. And after a long night of flying, it’s just a little difficult to do more than hop into the tub.”

“What’s a tub?”

“What is a…” The harpy shakes herself after a brief pause, ruffling her feathers slightly. “Well, you see, a tub is a basin full of hot water you rinse off in. You do… you do take baths right?”

“Mhm! In the river! Din-Din too, though he doesn’t like it. Also, it makes my hair all sleepy an’ droopy.”

“It does tend to do that,” Andrea nods sagely. “Anyway, I’m guessing your curious what we do here all day, then.” Cici nods. “Then let me show you.”

With a flourish, the harpy produces a fresh envelope from a nearby cubby.

“So, you see, people live far away from each other, but they still want to send each other things: letters, gifts, etcetera-”

“What’s an etcetera?” Cici pipes in.

“Well, it’s another way of saying ‘so on and so forth’. Anyway, the point is that people want to send things to each other, but it takes a long time to travel through trees and over bumpy roads to get there. That’s why they usually just bring the mail here to us. They give us a small amount of money depending on how heavy the package is, we seal it up in an envelope or a box, tack on a label, and fly it where it needs to go.”

“Wow! Your arms must get really tired!” Cici’s feet were already starting to ache after a day walking around town.

“Hmm… It’s a very difficult job,” she agrees, “but it makes a lot of people happy.”

“Do you have to fly to be a mail person?”

“Oh, well, we do have land bound couriers for local deliveries,” she explains. “Humans, dwarves, lamia, we hire just about everyone. I’ve also heard rumors of land bound Ostriche Harpy couriers for long distances, but haven’t seen them myself….”

[“Mama says fire is dangerous.”]

“Thanks for all of your help!” Cici says. “I think we should go now though and see lots of other stuff.”

“My pleasure,” Andrea assures her. “Come back any time.”

“Maybe when I have lots of friends, I’ll be able to send them letters.”

However, at this exact moment, Cici had more pressing things on her mind: fluffy, adorable things in need of petting. So with an enthusiastic wave, she’s once again back on the streets, wandering back to the market square before her mother can once again secure her hand.

And as it would turn out, kittens are a hot commodity in a place with too many mice and not enough grain, the stand far emptier when Cici arrives than when she had seen it before. Still, she can count three miniature balls of fluff still remaining as she approaches, all curled up beside their mother as her own awkwardly pauses at the corner.

“You can go on ahead, Cici,” she assures her. “Just be careful to keep your hood tucked tight, be gentle with them, and ask first.”

With a nod, Cici is on her way, breath coming short and heart thumping a little louder as she approaches the stranger’s stall. He’s a young man by any estimate, a scraggly beard worn proudly where a more dignified adult would go bald-faced. Still, he seems friendly enough as he notices the girl and immediately waves her over with a wide grin.

“Come on. Come on. No need to be shy,” he insists. “Reckon you’re looking to pet one of these fluff balls, and it ain’t exactly gonna kill ‘em to get a bit of extra lovin’ in.”

“I’m Cici,” Cici introduces herself.

“And my name’s Clyde!” the boy offers. “Ms. Pretty here went and got herself pregnant again. So I figured I’d get the little one’s all tucked away before they got too big to feed.”

“Do cats eat a lot?”

“About as much as they can get their little teeth around, and they take their claws to everything else.” He blanches for a moment as he seems to remember why he is here. “Still, better a cat than a rat any day.”

“Hmmm,” Cici acknowledges quietly, but her eyes are already scanning over the kittens, trying to find the one with optimal fluffiness amidst the black and grey striped litter.

Then, with a quick look to the owner to confirm, she gently scoops it into her arm, the warm, soft bundle still snoozing peacefully in whatever dreams had come.

“By the way, do you know of any libraries around here?” Cici questions, using one arm to hold the animal, as she begins gently stroking its ears with her thumb.

“A library?”

“Mhm. With new books, preferably ones with pictures.”

“Well, reckon we don’t have much for a lending library around here,” he admits. “Though there is Mr. Martin’s book store if you wanna buy one.”

[“Okay. Okay….”]

But first, she did come all of this way, and she wasn’t content with just a few head scratches for her new feline friend. Even now, its soft, pink lips were moving in its sleep, its paws absently kneading at her cloak with their miniscule claws. Something about that lazy absence of thought makes Cici smile as she continues running her fingers through the velvety fluff, eventually eliciting a low rumble from deep inside the kitten’s chest that begs her to continue.

Time at that point loses a good bit of meaning to the young girl, her mind rapturously blank as she tends to something barely a tenth of her size. However, all things come to an end, and for Cici this arrives when a growl turns into a mewl, watery eyes opening on the fuzzball beneath her as it searches for its mother. At least, that’s what Cici takes as the small being’s head wobbles from side to side, it’s paws scrabbling for a more secure foothold, and that’s enough to prompt her to put it back where it belongs, the kitten quickly stumbling over on unsteady feet before burying itself in its mother’s stomach for a midday meal.

“Thank you.”

That’s all she can really offer before she’s once again on her way, her mother reappearing from behind a corner as the two continue their walk down the street.

“So where will it be next then?” her mother asks, smiling at how little it took to put a skip in her daughter’s step.

“Maybe a bookstore!” Cici says. “The voices say I’ll never be nothing if I don’t fucking read.”

Cassandra stops, whirling around quickly to get in front of her daughter and bending down to eye level.

“Cici,” she begins, kind but firm. “I never want to hear that word out of your mouth again. Do you understand?”

“B-but Mama, why?”

“Because it is a bad word that only bad people use to hurt other people, and you’re a sweet, kind person who wouldn’t want to do that, would you?”

“No Mama…” Cici mumbles shamefully, eyes on the pavement.

“It’ll be okay sweetling,” Cassandra assures her, patting her head gently as they go. “You are just learning is all, and part of learning is making the occasional mistake. It’ll be alright, now let’s get to that book store, hm?”

Down the street they go in the midafternoon sun, scales leaving a peculiar pattern in the dirt road as the pair round a corner and spy a sign for Bridgestone Bookshop, a stone hewn building with what appeared to be a mock windmill on the side. An open sign quickly sees them in through the door into the shop filled with squat shelves and hefty tomes soon after, aisles upon aisles of books crammed into this tiny space.

However, the shopkeep is nowhere to be seen, only an unmanned desk with a bell on top, one which Cassandra rings gently to send the sonorous hum echoing to the back room.

“The fuck is that?” comes a gruff voice as a response.

And don't use bad words just because some of the voices use them; they don't have to accept the consequences of their words like you do, so they tend to say things that your mother would not approve of.

Now, let's ask Mr. Martin if he has a dictionary.
>>
“Mama, he said a bad word!” Cici whispers.

“I’m aware, sweetling. Now how about you find yourself a book while he and I discuss his manners?”

While Cici goes perusing through the aisles, another ding rings out through the store front. And of course, with another tap of the bell, comes another round of obscenities.

“Hold onto yer tits, ye good for nothin’ arsehole, I’m on muh way.”

“Aye an’ I reckon she’ll hear worse than the likes of this growing up. So how’s about ye take yer head out of yer minge an- Ah, shite yer tall.”

[“This one looks like it might have magic in it! Oh wait, no, it’s a story about a magic, hm, what even is that…?”]

I think that is a wombat. Do they even have those around here? It does look rather dashing in that cape and hat though. And look, it’s gnawing its wand out of an oak branch!

>>659822
>>659761

[“Good idea! If I get a book on words, then I’ll know which ones not to use. Hmm…. But there’s so many…]

Cici spends a good while thumbing at the shelves and trying to find a book that she can make heads or tails of. It’s no easy task when we’re talking about dictionaries, of course, but she does eventually stumble upon “Sir Penwood’s Bedrock for Future Scholars”, a thick tome with plenty of small illustrations and non-complicated definitions. It’s fairly hefty, but somehow she manages to pull it from the shelf and tuck it under her arm, making her way back to the front register with a bounce in her steps.

There to greet her is a somewhat frazzled looked dwarf with a red beard and her mother with a wide grin.

“Did you find what you were looking for, sweetling?” Cassandra asks.

“Yes, Mama,” Cici nods, picking up the book to show her.

“Then this kind gentleman would be more than glad to check you out. Isn’t that so?”

“It would be my pleasure mad ‘am and young missus,” he says in a dull, robotic tone just at the edge of panic. “That’ll be twenty crowns, clear as you see on the front there.”

“Here’s the money, Cici,” Mama says, pulling out a few coins to show her. “This one means ten, this one means five, and the others mean one. What are they all together, then?”

Cici’s brow furrows.

“Twenty-two?”

“That’s right! So you can keep two for yourself. Maybe you’ll be able to buy yourself a treat on the way home.” She turns to the man and gently takes the book as it’s offered to her.

“Th-thank you for yer custom…” He mumbles, courteously showing the two to the door before putting up the “Out for Lunch” sign and closing his shutters.

Cici’s stomach hungers for sweets after a long day of shopping. However, considering the alternative, she remembers times when things could have been really bad without money. When Mama got sick after the adventurer’s hurt her, if that happened again or something happened to Din-Din… She slides the coins into her pocket and makes the determination not to use them until the time is right.

Still, at this point, the afternoon is setting in, and Guyus’ shop is open and waiting for the pair to stroll on in. A familiar patter and pound echoes in the background as dough is worked into confectionary delights, the wonderful smell of glazed sugar and tart fruits being brought to a boil heavy in the air.

“Mmm… What are you making?” Cici inquires, her little snakes eagerly lapping at the air as she breathes deep of the aroma. “It smells so good.”

“Apple pie, raspberry tart, sweet rolls, and cream cakes,” the man declares happily, moving to the front as he wipes his hands clean. “It’s a busy life being a baker, but it’s a good one. Still, the way things are going, I’m gonna need an assistant one of these days.”

hmm maybe you could help guyus in return for a pastry, either way it'd be useful to know how to bake things.

Ask if he could show you how he works, and if you could help. Who knows, if you have a knack for shaping dough, he might take you on as an assistant.

Are we too young to take up a job?
How far is the village?
Is this the kind of thing a kid could do, like a paper route?

You may as well watch him work and ask if you can help in exchange for learning how to bake.

I'm sure you mother wants to pass on her skills to you, but something tells me she isn't much of a baker.

Thirding this. Someday you will need to live by yourself, and you need a talent to offer your services. If you have the skill for it, you coudl learn the trade from Guyus and become his assistant once you get older

“I could help!” Cici offers excitedly, the voices bolstering her past her timidity if only for a moment to offer such a bold proclamation. And for his part, it certainly gives the old man pause, his expression inscrutable as he looks to the waist-high gorgonling blushing on the other side of his counter. “I mean, I-I’d really like to learn how to cook… and m-meet people… and…”

“Do you know anything about baking?” he asks, Cici shaking her head sadly in response, but the old man just laughs. “Neither did I when I started up this shop, but the real question is: do you wanna learn?”

This time he gets an enthusiastic nod.

“Ha! Well, there’s worse things in this town than a kid with a little initiative,” he chuckles. “And if you wanna learn, I don’t see why I wouldn’t be willing to teach: given your mother’s permission, of course.”

Cici looks up pitifully to her mother.

“Can I, Mama?” she begs innocently, and this time it’s Cassandra’s turn to laugh, the sad, wearisome laugh of a woman who knows she’s lost the battle before it’s even begun.

“Okay, sweetling, if you’re sure this is what you want.”

“It is, Mama!” she insists. “I wanna learn new things.”

“Well now, settle down,” the old man clucks. “Can’t be gettin’ too big for your britches just yet. Let’s go through the basics first, and we’ll see if you’ve got what it takes. Now grab an apron and show me some muscle!”

Cici has no idea what he means by that, but that pretty much sums up the next couple of hours spent running around the bakery as the old man throws her in head first, enlisting her for help in everything from making complex recipes to sanitation. The poor girl almost always finds herself dizzy in that time, whether it’s fetching jars of things she’s never heard of, mixing huge batches of unfamiliar ingredients and measuring things out in just the right volume before tossing them in, or scrubbing a dish clean in preparation for its use, she inevitably feels like a fish out of water. And of course, predictably, there are more than a few incidents that end with spoiled ingredients and more than a bit of spilled flour.

Still, even through all the sweat, toil, and confusion, Cici still has a smile on her face come the end (along with bits of cake batter her snakes are busying themselves licking away as she stands there in her knotted up, oversized apron). Flour-stained and sweaty, her smile couldn’t be wider as she gleefully watches her first sweet rolls rise from flat disks into beautiful, crisp mounds.

“Aye, I reckon she’ll do,” the man laughs to Cassandra, the two sharing a drink as the evening light shines through the window beyond.

Thanks Bananon. When do you reckon on running again?

I'm gonna try to keep to Mondays. They are typically my free days. It's just that today, I had some extra work that I had to do.

>Cici two coins isn't much, you could buy something to share with your friends sometimes. And while saving money is good, that's only if you earn enough money to save. Two coins won't pay a doctor unless they are mostly pure silver or gold.

Sounds good. Thanks for running the quest, I like how comfy and cute it is
