Laki turns to you and puts her hands on her generous hips. “Depends what it is.”

You sit her down on a log and put a hand on your chin. “I think you should get rid of that sarashi.”

Her eyes light up and she covers her wrapped up chest. “Excuse me?”

“Or maybe keep it, but use a different colour. Light blue, maybe.”

She laughs. “Oh. Oh! Fashion tips. Jeez, Soft Hands. You ever think about how you phrase things?”

You’re too in the zone. You do a rough visual measurement of her exposes ankles and inspect the material of her open windbreaker. You can tell she’s not used to people being in her space, but she doesn’t say anything. She’s keeping cool and in charge.

“You done yet?” She says half smugly, half amused.

You step back. “One more thing.” You pick a small flower, lean in close, and put it in her hair. “Perfect. It brings out your eyes.”

She rolls those very eyes at you. She reaches up to take it out, but she stops and looks at her reflection in the water. “Great. Now that we’re done wasting time, can we go?” She fluffs up her hair a little.

“Right. Let’s keep looking.”

You look around for Keira for awhile longer. Just as you’re about to give up, you hear her voice. “Hello, little guy.”

You and Laki exchange a look.

“Hello, little guy.”

This time you find the source. A little bird Pokemon on a branch.

You decide to cook something nice for it now. You take off your backpack and start rummaging for your supplies.

“More cooking, huh?” She sits. “Well, make something for me too.”

You nod. You’ll need to get more ingredients quicker than you expected if this keeps up. But that’s okay. You like finding new things to cook.

You get the spices and oil ready and start frying some stuff up. A nice little fried meal and a larger one for Laki. You sizzle it up nice and good. Ah, that smell.

You hand Laki the travel plate and then coax the Chattot down. It stays just out of range to touch.

It takes it’s first bite. “Hello! Hello! Hello!” It stuffs its face in hard.

“Right?” Laki says to it as she eats.

It feels nice to have so many fans of your cooking.

The bushes start moving. You and Laki stand up. You see several Mankeys up in the trees on one side. You turn to look at the other exit and see a small, fat little Pokemon with pointy ears.

“Crap. The smell.” Laki starts packing stuff away while keeping an eye on both groups of approaching Pokemon. “We should get out of here.”

There are maybe three or four Mankeys, but that other Pokemon looks hungry enough to be willing to fight everyone for it.

One grabs onto Laki’s face. One goes for your paid mercenary Pokemon. You pick up the pan just in time for the third to land in front of you.

Laki struggles to yank the Mankey off her face. She grabs both it’s arms and pulls it off, but then it just kicks her and she stumbles back.

The Mankey near you lands near your egg and pokes it.

You pick up the pan and step forward. Mankey puts up its hands, then deciding you’re just bluffing, leaps up. You smack it out of the air with the back of the pan. Another Mankey comes at you from the bushes. You block with the pan, the swing it around to send that one flying too. A third leaps at you and you intercept it with a kick, stopping it cold.

Laki and the chubby pokemon are still struggling with theirs. Chatott as flown up onto a branch to get out of the way of all the commotion.

The fat Pokemon is taking a beating, but he looks like he’s able to take blows.

The fat Pokemon takes another hit.

You turn to Laki. A few Mankeys have swarmed over her and messed up her clothes. For everyone one that she pulls off, two more take their place.

You stomp over to Laki and grab the Mankey that’s about to attack her again from behind. You toss him back. Not hard enough to hurt him, but to get some distance.

“EVERYONE! CUT IT OUT!”

And somehow, it works. The fight seems to come to a pause. “No more fighting!”

The Mankeys look at their fallen brethren and you, and decide it’s not worth the trouble. They leap away. You keep near the egg until they’re all gone.

The three of you sit down for a moment and rest, before the fat Pokemon strolls over and eats his payment in a single gulp. He nods in approval of the food, but looks around for more. He looks beat up, but that doesn’t stop him when it comes to eating.

“Hungry, huh?”

Laki looks at you. “You...don’t have Munchlax where you come from, do you?”

Chatott sits on it’s tree branch. It hasn’t done it’s job yet.

You pick up a Pokeball and set it down next to Munchlax. You’re offering, not catching. “Want to be my Pokemon?”

Munchlax looks up at you. Laki spits out her water.

“Sorry the food wasn’t the best. I was cooking in a bit of a rush, but-”

Munchlax leaps up and taps the Pokeball. He vanishes into the light.

“Oh. Soft Hands. I don’t think you know what you just did.” Laki puts an arm around your shoulder. “I hope you really, really like cooking.”

“Do they have an appetite?”

She laughs at you.

“Hello, little guy.”

You both look up at the Chatott. She smacks your chest to get up with the back of her hand you you both pack everything.

You clean up, but find an extra small bit of food that you must have missed. Munchlax comes out of his ball and eats it.

The three of you get up and follow Chatott. It flutters from tree to tree, letting you catch up. Munchlax follows and picks up a root or berry once in awhile along the way.

“My aunt used to have a Chatot.” Laki tells you.

If it's anything like cat food, around $82 dollars (22 pound bag costs $18). For kibble. Even if it's half that for cheap pokemon food, it's not like $40 a day to feed a pokemon is very sustainable.

Hopefully we'll be lucky and the food issue will be mostly handwaved, like it was with Ash's Snorlax.

You follow Chatot for awhile until finally it comes to a stop.

“Malicious,” Laki continues, “spirits sometimes disguise themselves as people or pokemon to fool them into lowering their guard.”
