Very sorry I am late- but I'm ready to continue Coron's adventures.

You have returned to your… base of operations. Inanna, Namu, and a few of your men sit eagerly awaiting your return- Inanna being the first to speak up.

“So- how did it go!?”

And so you tell them of your arrival and initial meeting with the queen. How a few probing questions had shown Namu’s suspicions correct, but also revealed that there is a more dire threat to humanity out there.

“And you trusted her word, even as she admitted her very nature?” Disgust flares across Namu’s face as he speaks, his voice raising with every word.

“Even if it is true, even if she is without taint, a thing I am not certain is possible, how can we be certain that this isn’t part of the spirits plans… Subtle manipulations placed in her, rather than outright corruption?”

You sigh before you respond.

”If we question every ‘if’ that crosses our mind, we will never act. Please, Namu listen to me.”

It pains you to see your friend, a brother even, act this way… Clearly something personal has informed this hatred, and it fills you with sorrow that he has not offered the reasons behind his beliefs, though you dare not ask him nor Inanna, silently hoping that they will come to you in their own time.

> Fine. He will not tell you yet, but you must try reason, even in his dire emotional state. ”I know that you still believe that any witch is evil or otherwise deceitful. This is a view I do not share but still, tell me Namu, would it nobler to be born free of taint- or to overcome ones nature through great effort?”

>Fine. He will not tell you yet and you need to lay this to rest, at least for now. ”Namu, I believe- no- I know you to be a man of honor, I ask that in repayment for my saving your life, you bury your bias against the Queen.”

Fine. He will not tell you yet, but you must try reason, even in his dire emotional state.

“I know that you still believe that any witch is evil or otherwise deceitful. A view I do not share but still, tell me Namu, would it be nobler to be born of taint- or to overcome ones nature through great effort?”

Namu considers your words- which of itself pleases you. Uncertainty cracks at the composure of his anger, even as he leans on his clenched fists considering a response-

He nearly has one- begins to speak it before biting it back, killing the thought before he’d a chance to articulate.

Frustration flashes across his face and he begins to look tired and it pains you to see him so, but still his fists unclench and he no longer leans on the table.

With a sigh he begins to move towards the exit, managing a monotone answer to any questions that might be raised towards his leaving.

“I will return…”

And so you let him go.

With that… handled, the atmosphere turned dour, but still you pressed on, explaining how you and the Queen agreed to work together to protect and enrich the city, no matter what trials it may face.

Privately and after a lengthy conversation held over a meal, Aya had already begun to defer to you on matters of your specialty- firstly speaking your technological prowess.

You had brought up several concepts and ideas which could improve the cities standings, from improved irrigation systems to potential sophisticated production of ballistic weaponry and by the end she was sufficiently convinced of your ability as a purveyor of technology.

Secondly came your… charisma is an insufficient word- the Queen put it thusly “You’re able to see what lies in the hearts of man and know intimately how to reach them through it.” Such an ability would be at least partially wasted if you did not hold some kind of role in the public’s eyes of Urak.

It was decided that…

>You would take a very public position as a central confidant to Aya. Your actions- whether influenced by her or of your own initiative- would carry the word of the Queen herself. You would become synonymous with the thought of ‘leading’ Urak, alongside the Queen herself of course.

>You would take a low profile- working in the interests of the city yourself as you saw fit while rarely connecting yourself to the Queen. Obfuscation is its own reward, afforded simply when it appears two parts operate separately of eachother- confusing enemies within and without.

Obfuscation is its own reward, afforded simply when it appears two parts operate separately of eachother- confusion enemies within and without.

“Okay- understandable… If there really is some weird threat out there- we shouldn’t let them know we’re actively working against them, nor that the city is.” Inanna rambled out her thoughts after you spoke, weighing it all in her mind.

You only hoped that the forces at play could not simply pluck such information from the Queen’s mind.

Looks and murmurs of agreement came from the others- one electing to speak up.

“We’ve already done quite a bit while working… covertly, why waste a skill?”

Which does bring the issue of your twenty-men, you’ve come to understand them each well and earned a measure of loyalty in all of them- what will their future hold?

>Militarize. They’re already competent soldiers due to their lives as scavengers and so you’ll use them as a special… force, an unofficial one, defending the cities best interest alongside you. You’ll train them directly, maybe even learning something yourself.

>Educate. These men are warriors, true, but you will need them to be something more. You need generals, leaders, and creators to help you rebuild this world. You will ensure they understand the plight of mankind and show them how they might best right it.

Still keeping it pretty arbitrary and simple at this point... Tell me if it's bad.

A smile forms across your face- the dour mood lifting almost immediately as men’s interest becomes piqued at what you’re about to say.

“It is time we begin on what I meant when I mentioned ‘things greater than mere flight’.”

You stand as you speak, splaying your hands on the table.

“You will not simply be scavengers any longer. You will be scholars, leaders, and creators, so that as I take this world into my hands and shape it, I will have competent and compassionate men alongside me to do so.”

Circling the room a bit of uncertainty leaks into the men.

“When I cannot oversee the creation of laws in our cities, you will. When I cannot devote every moment to studying a crucial piece of tech found in the sands, you will. Make no mistake, no one man ever changes a world alone, it requires many great men and women to come together to do such a thing.”

At the other end of the table you stop, leaning against it.

“And you will be great.”

Of the cities scattered across the wastes- there is only one that Urak has any kind of regular contact with- south following the Phraate river you will find Laneve, built in the deltas of where the Phraate feeds into a massive lake or sea.

The deltas of the Phraate provide ample growing opportunities- and indeed of the trade caravans that come they usually carry a variety of fruits, many which simply cannot be found in Urak.

One such bean is ground- boiled in water, and then the remains are filtered out and then it is consumed.

You enjoy it- though unlike your men you oft cut the edge of drink with a splash of Makel milk and a sweetener of some kind…

Either way you’ll almost certainly need to engage with them on a deeper level at some point- though when is best you are not sure.

The state of farming up and down the Phraate river is… stable, and as a result the people of Urak can be fed quite adequately…

However the granaries are light- there no great warehouses of food in case of disaster.

Any number of things such as an unfortunate fungus infecting a crop could set you in dire straits food wise.

Urak survives on the abundance of technology scattered about the sands in every direction by whatever calamity befell this world.

It wields amazing technology- las weapons, carapace armors, and salvaged ground vehicles on occasion- but it does not truly understand that which it wields and as a result cannot reliably field it in war.

You’ll need to find any edge you can to help these- your- people.

>Investigate the military ‘palace’, surely there is something useful hidden inside this monolithic structure?

Pick one ‘general’ action.

>Look into potential improvements in irrigation- allowing more land closer to the city to be used as farms.

>Set up more advanced production methods for simple firearms, the sands around Urak are generally free from threat- other than other scavengers… but a war is on the horizon.

>Send a diplomatic/scouting envoy down to Laneve- you of course won’t be acting officially but under the guise of a mercantile venture perpetuated by your mercenary group.

Ah… a perfect first project for you and your men to undertake…

Your men sat rapt as you lectured them-

“There are a variety of options we might deploy here- pumps, brick lined trenches, and others… Each with their own hurdles to overcome…”

A cloth pulled back revealed a variety of different materials-

“We’ll need some practical demonstrations to understand these hurdles… Feel free to suggest any other solution, remember that this is much an actual problem being solved as it is an opportunity to learn.”

Discussion descended once more- and it grew quite heated- and not based on any rational thought, but simple bickering and deliberate arguing in bad faith became quite rampant no matter how you attempted to strike it down.

But you pushed on- and as days passed the schisms that formed on the first day healed, and different ideas began to emerge independent of those schisms.

Pumps- initially discarded as too cost worthy, the energy required to power them a commodity too costly to spare, were implemented in a few specific rolls alongside an elevated stone trench to feed water deep into the sands…

You would need to build the pumps- construct the elevated trench and do some earth moving to get things started, but the idea formed had merit.

Merit that you likely could’ve come up with on your own- but then your men would’ve never learned these lessons…

Namu had elected to come with you to search the records of the aircraft buried beneath the sands, you hoped greatly that his motives concerned his anger and he did not disappoint.

“I’ve considered your words... and felt I must explain myself- what I’ve seen.”

He sighs deeply and you remain silent- but your trek through the sands has stopped.

“Witches- the powers they use- they invite spirits to them. Attract them. And occasionally these spirits simply destroy the mind of the witch, a cruel pointless end that harms no one else. An end I can accept.”

“However… rarely, the spirits will take hold of the witch and twist them, into a horrifying being of maligned flesh who wishes only death upon the living. This is what I have seen. I have seen the horrors such a being is capable of-“
His eyes have become unfocused- so deep in remembrance is he.

“You never truly forget such sights, especially when they are against the people you hold dear. My mother died in the streets of Urak shielding me - but I still saw it through the gaping wounds on her body. I would’ve died too- had it not been destroyed by a passing band of scavengers.”

A moment passes in silence as Namu brings himself back to the present-

“This is why I hate. Why I have hated. But I have considered your words- a witch is born, that we know is true, and so how can I justify my hate against someone on what they might do, what they are capable of.”

“I have found no answer that satisfies me- nothing to justify my hatred.”

You nod- extending an arm to Namu he takes it and you share an embrace.

“I am sorry, brother.”

You break from the embrace to reply.

“Do not be. You have seen past your hatred- a hatred caused by real pain, no matter how irrational it was. You have nothing to be sorry for any longer.”
>>
>>649129
And so you continued on.

Arriving at the aircraft you begin to search its records more thoroughly.

Maps and transmissions are scarce- and many are useless due to their now irrelevant topographical natures though as you piece together over hours it appears Johnson left the base at Urak when a network wide alarm transmission went out- one that as you believe told of the end of the world by some type of weapon.

Johnson clearly had mind to flee- you could be surer if whatever systems the navigation of this craft used still operated… Some kind of spacecraft you imagine, to place position across a planet accurately.

Still you cross reference and search through swathes of useless information- before you finally think you’ve got it figured out.

The metal palace at Urak was some kind of ‘forward’ base in the war that tore this world apart- and Johnson, upon hearing of the end of the world, thought better of his chances if he moved to a base nearly a weeks travel by foot to the north-west.

Some kind of massive structure built under the a million tons of stone mountain- using such natural formations to help in protecting the facility.

He never made it that far, obviously.

>Namu and yourself with investigate this now- you’re already at your aircraft.

Lucky and great eyes...

“I’ve got something- something big. We’ll get the men and head out via the craft… It should only be a few hours travel.”

Namu nods and you provide him with the details you found as return to Urak to retrieve your men, who all outfit themselves in their best gear... which largely means light armor and a small caliber rifles, with the occasional lasgun thrown in.

Unfortunately you’ve largely had to provide for yourself as far as weapons and armor go- if you lift too much from the militia’s armory someone will become suspicious one way or another.

You hope this trip will put an end to this issue- though theoretically you’re only scouting.

The flight towards your destination is smooth- it feels natural to be back in the pilot seat once again.

Hmm… you’ll need to teach someone else how to use this properly.

Hours pass in mixtures of silence and chatter amongst your comrades- though you should be upon it soon.

Ah, in the distance you spot it, a mountain peak of red stone, piercing from the dunes and into the sky- from here you can see no signs of any facility, but you’re prepared for a further inspection.

You bring the craft in low- and sweep around the base of the mountain, searching for any signs of a man made structure- unfortunately you spot nothing- so you carefully set the bird down and exit the vehicle with your men.

You won’t be staying here too long- this is a whole excavation problem in and of itself if you find nothing quickly…

First you must plan your search- your eyes survey the field of sand for a while- carefully mapping the dips and rises of the dunes- and then you spot it.

The sand dips down sharply in a place it has no business doing so- unless there is somewhere for the sand to underneath.

Ha! You hadn’t expected it to be that easy…

Your men follow you as you move to uncover, digging down and quickly find yourself in a large tunnel, made of some clearly man made material that is grey and coarse to the touch… The floor here is similarly paved, though it much smoother black material…

The air in here is stale and filled with dust and decay- and even your superhuman eyes cannot see to the end of the massive dark tunnel before you.

It’s only moments before a decent path down has been carved from the sands and your men stand with you.

You all stand on the edge of where the light meets the darkness, pondering your next maneuver.

>We’ll scout ahead now- that’s what we’re here for right? Someone get the torches…

>Set up a proper excavation of the tunnel- you judge it’s large enough to fit your aircraft in- if only just, it will certainly provide some comfort to have a ‘moving’ forward base.

>Return. Whatever’s here is still beyond your scope- but now you know exactly its location and can return at anytime. It’s such a distance from civilization that it’s nigh impossible for it to be discovered.

Excavate enough so we can reverse the Drop Ship in a little, which will block off the path and let us know if we are being followed as well as enable a rapid exit if we need to bail out of here quickly.

From there leave a third of the men here to guard and keep watch. Show them how too use the front gun on it which due to it facing out will be guarding the tunnel entrance.

Unfortunately the front gun is still ammo-less as you're unable to produce the rounds necessary to feed it.

This may or may not be resolved by working on your production of ballistics.

But they do still have rifles- and the safe vantage point of a cock pit is a good idea.

“We’ll descend into the darkness, I will naturally lead by a slight distance, probing for any threats, but that is no excuse to falter- you must remain on high alert.”

Nods and noises of affirmation run through their ranks- torches are lit and preparations made for the walk.

It is a long tunnel- and though you maintain your alertness nothing jumps from the shadows to slaughter you and your men.

And then you smell it- death. Old death, ancient death.

You wager the skeletons that lay on the ground here only exist due to the preserving environment this facility provided.

But more interesting than the skeletons is the equipment beside them- and the massive wall of torn and destroyed metal they lay outside.

You tap your foot in a pattern- signaling the group to catch up with you- quietly- before you kneel and inspect the weapons, your mind forming connections as you stare at them.

Three plasma guns- devastating weapons that fire bolts and streams of plasma, a melta gun which fires beams of energy that burns with the heat of stars, and of course the advanced carapace armor that enshrouds the skeletons.

Once again you apologize to the dead as you scavenge the supplies off them.

Luckily one of the sets of armor can be adjusted to fit you form- if you so desire.

>Take it

>It’s better suited protecting one of your men

And of course your choice of weapon to match your laspistol-

>Melta-gun

>Plasm Gun

And then you continue on- carefully moving past the wrenched metal doors and into a large atrium- which is partially destroyed- mostly centered on what bits the doors are not covering.

But otherwise it seems largely intact- if deactivated, though whatever damaged this world surely did scour the life here- it seems every corpse simply fell where it stood.

You continue on- scouting ahead of the group as you move through the facility through whatever open paths you find- your mind constantly filling with information on what you’re seeing.

Production facilities of all kinds, weapons, armors, vehicles, munitions… It is an absolute gold mine.

You cannot help but wonder if there are other places like it on this world… and what might’ve found them.

Still, it is all deactivated as of now…

And there it is- a room sealed off by heavy doors- faded signage above it reads

“Danger: Reactor Room”

You do not hesitate to begin cutting through these doors with fine application of the meltagun at your disposal.

And soon you have access- a room of shiny grey metal greets you- and your mind forms an inkling to the unimaginable power that sits before you… You’re almost out of your depth.

>Attempt to activate the reactor and bring the facility back online.

Well it's very rare for something too fit us. Equip our men with what we can but we take the Melta Gun. Have the Plasma guns taken back too the gunship.

>Write-In.
Do not power anything all look around for salvageable loot and weapons, any loose wires or personal devices we can plug into the ship too charge. Saves us powering everything up. Once we are done here weld a door shut again too keep it secure.

Once we have some more men we will return.

Ok. By the looks of the votes we're gonna boot this place up...how many people do we have here? and are we ready for whatever defenses are about too boot up? If there are indeed other complexes around should we not secure as many as possible before booting them up because what if they start up across the globe? some in the hands of enemies?
>>
>>649918
Not many, but that's good
We have no clue about the defenses, That's a risk we'd face ANY time we booted it up.
This complex might have a map to them and what we're aware of is we're the only one with air-craft.
If they all suddenly boot up we've found the Command complex, thus meaning we could just shut them down as well

You've got 20 men, yourself, and Namu.

2 armed with a plasma gun, and 1 plasma and melta in flux until I roll a d2 for it...

You've got a laspistol(DAoT level, so like a lasgun in your hand), and either a plasmagun or a melta and are wearing some carapace armor.

3 of your men are also wearing carapace armor, I'll probably just designate that to who got the weapons, as you'd obviously doll those out to whoever's particularly skilled.

Give me 3d100 Bo3

Your tech prowess is worse than mediocre, but atleast you've got some competent people looking out for you.

You must activate it, it’s a risk, assuredly- but the boon that this might provide operates on a scale far beyond the rest of the world...

“Hold yourselves behind the wall- be prepared for anything, I’m going to attempt to bring the facility back online.”
Your men fall into order, half taking firing positions over the door, while the other half scan the room constantly, waiting for anything to appear.

For your part you begin to examine the vast machine that is beyond even your full comprehension.

Seconds turn to minutes- nearly to hours as you pour over every facet of the disrepair present on the reactor and your options for bringing it online.

You do figure out roughly where the ‘command center’ of the facility is located relative to the reactor, based on an electrical diagram

Ah, a shortcut comes to mind that should make your job easier as you stare at the innards of the advanced electrical systems…

Just move this around…

Done!

The resultant massive electrical shock your body receives tells you two things-

The reactor is online.

You probably fried some very important systems with that blunder.

The blaring alarm tells you that bad things are about to happen as lights flicker on all across the room and facility beyond.

For their part your men maintain their composure, their grips on their weapons tightening fiercely-

Panels in the ceiling retract and from the holes emerge turrets- servos whirring wildly as they swing around to identify targets.

The shock’s put you off balance- you’re not going to be fast enough to act.
But thankfully- someone else is.

Namu has your melta-gun in a second, focusing its intense beam on one of the turrets, severing it from the cealing, while those holding plasma guns turn the other into superheated slag dripping from the ceiling.

You’re on your feet in an instant after- nodding your thanks to Namu as he hands you your weapon back.

Fear grips at the hearts of your men, but you cannot help but feel pride as they stand their ground.

What are your orders?
>”We make for the command center- I’ll take point, if you’ve got carapace armor or a proper weapon you’re to be right behind me.” Hopefully you’ll be able to shut down the alarm.

>”We dig in and make a stand here- the system will send whatever it’s got at its disposal at us, then we can clear the facility one their dealt with.” Methodical and theoretically safer.

>Write-In.

OH FUCK! OH FUCK! OH FUCK!

nah, everything is ok

Certainly- this was the known part really.

Your fuck up comes in the form of what you fried...

Either way, solid consensus, 3d100, best of 3.

Form a diamond. You're at point, flanked by two plasma guns, autoguns at the center and far flanks, last plasma gun takes rear. At first contact, front ranks go prone, second ranks kneel and fire over front, third ranks stand and fire over second. Move slowly.

“We make for the command center- I’ll take point, fall into a diamond, plasmas flank me, one trail, you know the drill from there.”

Your men act without hesitation, falling into form behind and beside you as you move into the steely, now lit hallways of the facility.

Corridors branch in every which direction, but you’ve got a rough idea about the direction you need to move to get to the command center- and so you move.

A large intersection lies ahead- and you approach carefully checking each direction for threats, turning the corner in the direction of the command center- whirring servos sound from behind you-

“DROP!” Your shout reaches most of the squad successfully, and the energy bolts pass harmlessly over them.

And then you get to see the devastation these weapons really can cause.

Five men who failed to react in time are hit with bolts of blue energy- which pass straight through most of them, disintegrating every ounce of organic tissue touched before scorching the metal walls of the facility.

Four riflemen are dead in an instant, and the one fortunate enough to be wearing carapace armor is screaming about the resultant burns covering the left side of his torso.

Another man will have to carry him onward- you desperately wish you could stop and ease his pain- but you must keep moving.

Men that trusted you with their lives- men that were to help you rebuild this world.

You wish you could say your return fire was instantaneous and righteous- but you just barely managed to disable the machines before they could let off another volley.

Shock filters through the squad as all present realize their mortality- and begin to panic at the thought.

You speak simply and sternly as you hand the plasma weapon to another man.

“They have sacrificed for you. Do not waste it.”

And you continue to move.

More sounds of machinery from up ahead-

Sentries this time- support by hanging turrets and the far door has signage.

‘Command Deck’

Your men move as one, the front line falling, the second kneels, and the third stands.

And they unleash a volley of destruction on the metallic monsters.

The squad focuses the turrets, rightly so, seeing as they are the same as the ones that fire the blue bolts.

As a result the sentries manage to return fire with their ballistic weapons- another three cry out in pain- but none slump over motionless.

It is the little things you must be thankful for.

That and the subsequent destruction of the sentries.
>>
>>650505
You rush forward- pulling injured and beaten men into a command room which is alight with a multitude of control panels and consoles.

You spare no time as you rush to the one you intuit to be the one governing security- even as your men set up to defend the room.

Adrenaline primes your abilities- and once again you’re entering commands faster than most men think- even as the sounds of battle rage on behind you.

Less than a minute passes before you’ve administrative access- and in a instant the alarm, sounds of machinery and battle stop.
For a moment all that is heard are the groans of pain.

They comfort you, for groans mean that they yet still live.

As you look on those still alive and count Namu as one of those injured by the sentries... you cannot help but feel it wasn't worth it.

There's no time for that though. You have people to mend and heal, and a facility to do it within.
And that so ends the run tonight- the climax was weak in my opinion and I apologize for that- and hope that you will stick around through future runs!

Feel free to ask questions or insult me and such here.
