>Welcome to all. First-timer here.
>Anyone up for a Harvest Moon-inspired quest? If you've played Rune Factory, Stardew Valley, big papa Harvest Moon, or even Minecraft, you’ll pick up on this quest quickly. Expect slice-of-life with romance, action, farming, and crafting. Let's have fun.

------
The bus doors open with a soft wheeze and you step out. You exchange a short wave with the auto-driver and, then, just like that the bus doors softly close. The engine rumbles and the bus is gone: down, down along the highway, leaving you alone.
Welcome to Sunnyvale.
The valley is a green, green world. Life in all its forms fills your senses, and you are amazed by the sense of energy and life throughout. Yet, there's a certain serene stillness in the air that gives you pause. Where the bus had climbed mountains for the past hour and a half that were rough and rocky, harsh and desolate - they have given way to a cozy, green, verdant valley. Treetops in the distance sway in a gentle breeze. Birds sing. The sun shines brightly overhead, melting the few snow patches that remain from the vestiges of winter.
There's an over-sized wooden sign that's pointing south. You read "Sunnyvale" in faded, chipped green paint. “Five miles,” it says, and your thoughts go back to humping the trail back in boot camp. “Easiest five miles I’ll have done in a while.” And that’s the truth.
You exhale a soft sigh, take a deep breath of cool mountain air, and realign your overstuffed backpack on your shoulder. It’s time to walk to your new future.
You've got clothes packed up, a phone (probably without reception), some meager savings, and a few mementos of your time in service. That's it. Or, on second thought, you also have that crumpled old letter in your back pocket. You dig it out. Your fingers trace familiar, worn creases and bumps. Stuffing it away and pulling it out recently, you’ve practically worn holes into the paper. And in such a short time – seems like yesterday you just got back stateside. You note that the corner of the letter is damp and, of course, your name is smudged to the point of being illegible. Reading the title words “On Your Inheritance,” on the page brings a sad, dry taste to the back of your mouth.

Dear --- ...

>Some short Char Gen:
>What is your name?
>What is your gender?
>First suggestion, from each of those two prompts, to be “Seconded” three times wins. Runner-up name can be used as surname if it’s sensible.

char gen is hard to do especially on this board do to how slow it is.

Anyway.

Jacky Richmond
Male.

>>642821
Its better to do a teaser for char gen. Basically something like having the players make a series of decisions that based upon them determines the character.

If for instanced they chose a sneaky or melee approach. The character is more specialized towards that. Making indirect makes it easier to do more in depth character gen with less problems.

Jacky Richmond it is.

The letter is familiar to you now, but you still find fresh pain in its words:

"Dear Jacky Richmond,

It is with great sadness that I write to inform you that your grandfather and last surviving relative, Roger A. Richmond, is recently deceased. As a longtime friend of your grandfather's I can solemnly report that he died with peace in his heart and the love of his neighbors upon him. I offer my deepest condolences. He is buried in the Sunnyvale Cemetery alongside his late friends and family, where he shall rest with the blessings of the Land upon him.

I can also report, with satisfaction, that your grandfather has named you the heir of his estate, including the Richmond family home and historic lands in Sunnyvale, on the sole condition that you inhabit the property for a minimum of two years. Sunnyvale is a simple land, but was the last great love of your Grandfather second only to yourself in his heart. Please travel to Sunnyvale post-haste so that we might further discuss arrangements and the terms of your inheritance. My business address is listed below.

I wish you strength of spirit and safety in your travels. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or requests of any sort.

Sincere Regards,

Thomas Waffles, Esq."

You fold the letter and stow it away, this time in your shirt pocket close to your heart. You swallow a lump in your throat and get moving towards Sunnyvale.

>About 3 miles, and sometime later…

You were about halfway to your destination when you hit the main parkway heading East. There still weren’t many cars – none, really – on the Parkway even though it was one of the main roads in the area. Was this place really that deserted? At least you had sidewalk to walk on and streetlights to guide you.

You kept on trudging on for about fifteen minutes after that and the sun kept sinking lower in its descent. It was about four in the afternoon when the first car finally passed by you on the road. You watched the old pickup pass you with disinterest. To your surprise, though, you watched it slow down and then come to to a stop some yards away. It was an even greater surprise when you saw a head out of the passenger window and look back at you.

You kept on walking and watched with curiosity as the truck started rolling backwards on the shoulder towards you.

The passenger – a young woman – started to wave in your direction. She called out to you, and her voice was loud and strong. “Hey! Headed downtown? We’ve got room if you want a ride.”

You don’t remember this place being so friendly. Granted, you haven’t been here in some 15 years.

>Politely decline. These people could be murderers!
>Graciously accept. This will get you to town much faster.
>Eagerly accept. You could probably work the sympathy card and get more than a ride out of these people.

You graciously accept. The girl, a short brunette with equal parts bounce in her step and her hairdo, hops out and motions for you to climb into the jumper seat of the old truck. You pile your meager belongings in, slide behind the passenger seat, and the car is shortly headed down the road once again.

The first few moments of the drive are done in silence. You note the old leather of the seats, the ancient CD player in the console – must have been custom added – and how Franc seems to actually be driving. It surprises you that he’s driving by himself and without guided assistance. People in the city haven't driven themselves in years. That’s dedication to old school right there. You make a note that this place is a little more quaint than you remember - but it's not like you're used to living in the city, anyways. More like you're not used to anything outside of service, anymore.

Once the silence really sets in you wonder what you've gotten yourself into - but you're grateful for the ride.

It’s the girl that finally breaks the silence.

“We’re not much for conversation, we tend to be the quiet ones in town, but I’m Tara and this ol’fart is my uncle, Franc. It's a pleasure, I'm sure.”

Franc, for his part, awkwardly shoves a calloused hand towards you. You try and shake his hand but sitting in the jumper seat means the positioning is just all wrong. The two of you end up fumbling through a series of weird half-shakes. Franc, most likely embarrassed, coughs and quickly retracts his hand. He offers a quiet apology and Tara laughs to herself. You hear her mutter something about Franc being a “dumbass.”

"So, what are you in town for? Haven't seen you around before. Right, Uncle?"

Franc grunts in the affirmative.

You still have a few minutes until you reach downtown.

“I’m actually looking to live here for a while. A family member of mine recently passed away and I was called into town.”

Tara catches your eyes in the rear-view mirror. You can see the silent offer of condolence, as if she wants to say she’s “sorry for your loss,” but she doesn’t know quite how. You just give a short nod. You each go back to staring at rolling landscape in the fading sunlight.

“I’m Jacky, by the way. It’s a pleasure to meet the two of you - and thank you again for the ride. I don’t really know my way around here.” You clear your throat. “Speaking of which, do either of you know a Mr. Waffles? I’m supposed to see him once I get into town.”

“Yeah, I know’im. Shit at poker, but he’s a good fellow.” It’s Franc this time. “I can drop you off right in front of his place. Why? You looking to make some money at five card?”

“He was the one that called me into town.”

Franc nods at that. “Gotcha. Yeah, we’ll take you there.”

Another moment of silence before Tara speaks up once again. “Have you been to Sunnyvale before?”

“Yeah, years ago. When I was a kid. I was visiting my grandfather at the time.”

“Was he the one that passed away?”

“Yeah.”

You can see the slight look of regret on her face at your answer. Tara bites her lip and looks intently into the distance once again - seems she has her own things to think about.

“So, do the two of you live in town? Or nearby?”

“Yeah, we live nearby. Drive’s a pain sometimes but we’re close enough. Far enough that I’m glad I have my truck, but we’re close.” Franc rolls his shoulders around briefly before continuing. “I own the local ranch, and Tara’s learning under me. She’s served on farms most’er life. So have I. You thinking of picking up farming?”

>Yes. Absolutely.
>Something like that.
>I don't think farming is for me.

You’re not really sure of that answer yourself, yet. So you go with the safe route, “Yeah, something like that.” Franc and Tara both nod and seem to accept that. “I just inherited some land - I’m looking to make my way in the world, I guess. Any suggestions would be appreciated.”

“Suggestions?” Asks Tara. She turns about in her seat and peers back at you. Her face tends to have a harsh expression to it but you note her eyes have a nice softness in their brown hues. “Suggestions for what? Farming? Life in Sunnyvale? Well, it ain’t easy.”

“What isn’t easy?”

“Either of them. So don’t count on it. Farming’s tough, it’s tiring, and sometimes it’s not gratifying work. But the end results can be beautiful, and it means a lot to the folks around here. It means a lot to us, Franc and me.”

“What she said,” offers Franc. “If you need any help with animals I can give you a couple pointers - but you’d have to buy’em first. From me, of course.”

“He’s the only rancher in town. But we raise the best animals. Right, uncle?”

“M’hm.”

“The secret to animals is this: feed’em everyday and visit with them everyday. That’s it. Same with plants: just plant them in tilled soil, water them everyday, and visit with them everyday.”

That last bit caught your attention. “Visit… the plants? Should I talk to them?”

Tara laughs - it’s a hard, crisp laugh and full of life. “I was just checking to see if you were paying attention. So where are you staying, anyways? Do you know where the land is that you’re inheriting?”

“I don’t know - where I’m staying or where the house is. I hadn’t gotten that far, yet. Everything’s been a bit of a whirlwind since I got back from the service.”

Franc takes an appraising eye to you through the rearview mirror. “You served?”

“Yeah. Just got out. I served…”

>As boots on the ground in the Army. +10% monster loot value.
>As a sailor in the Navy. +10% fishing loot value.

Franc lets out a grunt and then nods.

“Well, we both appreciate what you did. Right, Tara?”

Tara rolls her eyes and shrugs- which, to be honest, isn’t usually how people react when they meet a serviceman.

“I guess, sure. We’re grateful for you, but not the war.” She spits out. You can understand, sure. The sudden shift in tone caught you off guard, though.

“Well,” Franc cuts in, “if you don’t have a place to stay you’re welcome to stay with us for a night or two. Do you have a car or anything lined up?”

It’s a bit embarrassing to admit, but… You don’t have anything like that lined up. “No,” you answer. “I’ll be hoofing it for a while. But that’s fine - I’m used to long hikes.”

“Figured. That’s fine - just call us when you’re done in town and we’ll pick you up and drive you with us. Or not. Whatever you want’s fine by me. You got a cell phone?”

“Yeah, of course.”

“Tara? Give him your number.”

You and Tara exchange numbers, but there’s still the matter of staying with these people you just met.

“I appreciate the offer, Franc, but I’m going to try my luck in the town tonight. I don’t know how long my business with Thomas will take, and I’d like to look into some things if I’m going to be staying here long term.”

Franc gives a silent thumbs up. Tara nods her head but remains silent in the passenger seat, arms crossed. You wonder what’s going through her head.

“Well, we’ll always do what we can to welcome new neighbors. Call us if you need anything, Jacky.”

The countryside passes; the car ambles along through the evening. You reach the town center quickly enough and find yourself hopping out of the car, thanking the two of them once again. Franc points out Waffles Law Group and Tara reminds you that you have her number if you need anything, but she still looks a bit upset.

You’re walking away from the truck, and are about to shrug it off and forget about Tara's bad mood, when she waves at you and says “Hey, Jacky! We never asked if you had any other family members in the area! Is there anyone you can contact?”

“No,” you say. “My grandfather was the only one in the area- just him on his farm.”

“What did you say your grandfather’s name was, again?”

“Roger. Roger Richmond”

Tara’s hand goes limp at that, and her mouth clamps shut. You see her mouth a silent “oh,” as the truck pulls away. You're... not sure what all that meant. Something about your grandfather's name affected her, clearly. You might have to ask later.

You head into the law firm.

---

A bell on the front door rings as you enter; you are greeted by a petite, elderly woman at a front desk. A brass nameplate presents her as "Ms. Fontenot."

She peers up at you and you spy the thickly-applied makeup that adorns her face. She seems friendly enough but her choice of wardrobe is... interesting. She also smells strongly of an old floral perfume.

"Why hello-hello, dearie! I don't believe I've seen you before. New to town? Need directions? Or a date?" She waggles her eyebrows at you and you shudder slightly.

>"Yes, I'm new to town."
>"Only if you pay for dinner."
>"I'm looking for a Mr. Waffles?"

>I'll be heading to bed soon, myself - but I'll be back early tomorrow to run for a very long time, and the next day after that!

A small part of you is inspired to humor the receptionist - or perhaps it’s the fatigue from the long trip getting to you. Something like that.

“Well, Ms. Fontenot-”

“Please, call me Marie!”

“I am new to town, and while I would love to have someone such as yourself to show me around-” you take a large “gulp” here, “I’m afraid that you’re much too beautiful for a man such as myself.”

To your credit Marie eats this up - she’s positively beaming, and she starts fanning herself with a tiny deskside calendar as she giggles like a schoolgirl.

>+40 Friendship Points with Marie Fontenot

“Well, my! Aren’t you a charmer?” She offers you her hand, and you take it as gentleman-like as you can. “And what is your name, dear?”

“Jacky. Jacky Richmond.”

"Ah! You must be Roger's grandson. It's a pleasure! So sad about your grandfather. Such a good man."

"Thank you."

“Well, Jacky - you certainly did get your grandfather’s good looks. And his charms. I’m simply so[\i] looking forward to you living in town. It will certainly be nice to have… fresh blood, m’yes?”

Did she just lick her lips? No. No, she couldn’t have. Must have been a trick of the lighting.

"Ah! But who am I to keep you? You have important business to take care of! Mr. Thomas is in the back - he shouldn't be too busy. You can step in whenever you'd like. First door, straight through the hallway. Or you can stay here with me! Whichever you’d like."

You decide to go with the safer route and head deeper into the stuffy old law office. The floorboards creak beneath you, and old portraits adorn every inch of wall-space in the long hallway. A particularly garish-looking portrait of a “Mr. Richard Waffles IV” wearing a turban catches your eye in particular. After staring at it for a bit, and reading the inscription below the frame, you move on. It's time to talk to Mr. Waffles and get this whole inheritance business squared away. And, so, you march up and knock sharply on the dark wooden door marked "Thomas Waffles, Esq."

A quiet voice comes from within. "Mhm? Yes? Come in."

You walk into the office to find a man with a cleverly twirled handlebar mustache. He stands about four and a half feet. You weren't sure they made grown men in that size.

You introduce yourself and Thomas pips out an excited squeak before running around his desk. He grabs your hand and you engage in your second awkward handshake of the day. This handshake, however, is much more animated than the first. For a moment you think Thomas might be shaking himself up and down more than your hand.

"Mr. Jack! A pleasure to meet you. So sorry about your grandfather. Roger was a good man - such a good fellow. Never harassed me on my outstanding poker debts, always threw a cobbler my way on my birthday... By the Goddess, I'll miss those cobblers..." Thomas sighs wistfully, pulls out a handkerchief and dabs at his eyes. Then he blows into the handkerchief with a great, wet noise.

A poignant silence falls between the two of you. Thomas just looks up at you with a somber smile on his face.

"Ah, but you're here, of course, to hear about your inheritance! The future! And the future, dare I say it, is bright for you, young man!" Thomas moves about in a rush, pulling documents and throwing briefcases about in a fury before, finally, he travels back to his large leather seat, collects himself, and hops onto the chair in a practiced (but rather comical) motion. Thomas smacks his lips, then, and runs his hands over his satin vest. "Jacky, yes, before we get down to business? if you have a moment, I'd be happy to share some stories with you. And you must be tired after your journey! Why not share a drink with me, eh? I've got some scotch, here..."

He pulls an old crystal set - the decanter full of bronze scotch - out from a nearby writing desk. "What do you say? Want to hear a few highlights from the collection of troubles your grandfather and I got into? Before we get down to business, that is."

Your grandfather was a good man, of that you’re sure, but you wish you knew more about him. Distance, different lifestyles, and time itself meant he was an enigma just as much as he was a loving grandfather. He was close to your heart, yeah. He never missed writing to you on holidays, and always sent the occasional gift of money or something he thought you’d like. He was important to you, especially after your parents both passed. But you didn't know what the music he played sounded like. You didn't know how he acted with friends. You weren't sure if he was left handed like you, or what sports team he rooted for. Most of the letters didn't touch on him so much as the things going on around him. You often wondered if he was trying to give you a semblance of normal life while you were stuck in the middle of a war.

Yeah, he was a good man. The best.

“I’d love to hear your stories, Mr. Waffles. Thanks for the offer - very kind of you.”

“Nonsense, my boy.” Thomas smiles, unstops the decanter, and pours you both generous servings. "It's the least I could do for you and your grandfather both. The way I see it, we're practically family ourselves." You can smell the intoxication wafting off from the tumblers from across the desk. Thomas has got the good stuff, alright. “Let’s both toast, to your grandfather. And to a new life here for you, hopefully? If you’re anything like Roger then you’ve got the spirit for this life, and I’m sure you’ll love everything the valley has to offer.”

You take your scotch with a bittersweet smile. It goes down smooth, and the rising heat in your chest isn’t unwelcome. “Gramps often spoke highly of Sunnyvale, yeah. And, he wrote highly about it, too. I always appreciated his letters when I was overseas. Helped me to feel like I was here,” you gesture to the cozy world around you, “and not sitting in a four-foot pit wondering if the monsoons or the Chinese would kill me first.”

“Ah. Yes- I had forgotten you had served. Terrible business, that - and I salute you, Jacky. I thank you, for everything I’m sure you went through and everything I’m sure you did.”

“Mhm. Here's to gramps, and Sunnyvale.”

"To Roger, and Sunnyvale!" You both take a long drink. The burning intensifies - in your chest and in your eyes.

“Yeah, I often wish I knew... I wish I knew a lot more about a lot, I guess. I wish things had been different.”

“Is that what you’re hoping for here, Jacky? To learn more about your grandfather?”

You nod as you finish the last of your scotch. “Sunnyvale was his life, and that farm was his life’s work.” Thomas, seeing that you are both without libations, doles out another serving; you thank him. “I’d like to see everything he worked so hard on and really understand it all. Sunnyvale is the best opportunity to learn more about him. And, it is the family farm after all - maybe I’ll learn about my ancestors. I read there was a shrine here? Is that where they're all buried?”

Thomas takes a long swig, nods, then hiccups. “Yes, quite. I can show you the way there whenever you'd like, m'boy. And there’s a young priestess about your age - yes, about your age I’m sure - and she’s quite the looker. Takes after her mother; mother can’t stand me, o’course. Beautiful, though. Always ask her to dance, but she insists I get a stool-step, a’herm, step-stool. Quite."

"They are quite the women... Fierce, but beautiful. I tell you, it's people like that, that... that make being mayor worth it! Mhm."

"Wait, you mean beautiful people make it worth it?"

"What? No! Spirited!" Thomas gestures wide with his hands and leans back; you worry he might spill out of his seat. "Spirited, Jacky!"

"And you're mayor?" You let the amazement hit your face; it's not mean to be rude, of course. "You never mentioned that!"

The two of you laugh long and laugh hard.

"Well I am! And spirit is what I look for! Though, beauty isn't bad, wouldn't you say?More the reason to get out to the ole’ shrine though, yes? Aha.” Thomas then makes a cupping motion in front of him as if he’s discerning the secrets of the universe from two large coconuts. There’s just a bit of red to his face.

You grimace and chuckle to yourself.

“Ah, ‘s’cuse me, Jack. I apologies - that was most boorish of me. Please - don’t mention to Eliza that I said that…”

“Eliza is…?”

“The priestess. The shiny - I mean shrine - priestess. She, her daughter Gwen, and that ornery grandma Tabitha are all of the family that has tended to the Goddess Shrine to the north for years. Long, long, long time. Yes.” Thomas hiccups once more.

Thomas goes on for a bit longer, weaving through twenty years' worth of memories with your grandfather. The nostalgia gets to you by the end of it, and after a particularly good story about a drunken fishing trip you and Thomas are both alternating being laughing and trying to not cry. You get the impression Thomas is a good man, but prone to getting into innocent trouble.

The evening winds down with a discussion of the inheritance - true to the letter, you will have to inhabit the farm for two years to then legally own it. Thomas says you can then do with it whatever you wish. He hands over the old set of keys to the property as well as a sum of $1500.00 passed on by your grandfather. You give him sincere thanks.

What else is in the town, what kind of shops, how many people, little geographical lesson about rivers streams and other good spots.

Anything about resource gathering, fishing, hunting, mining, crafting, and farming. Even people to ask about all the above. i feel like we have a lot to learn after getting out of the military.

The two of you have just about wrapped everything up when you finally notice the time. You could really go for something to eat and, more importantly, you need to nail down where you’re going to sleep.

“Thomas, is there an inn in the area? And someplace to eat?”

“Ah, yes. Daniel and Allen run an inn and restaurant down the street. It’s one of those ‘all-in-one’ deals, you see? Everyone goes there. Best place in town!” He whispers this next part under his breath. “Only-place-in-town…”

“What was that, Thomas?”

“Ah, I said that I can actually walk you there myself! I could use something to eat. Not enough food and too much scotch, perhaps…”

“That would be great.” You and Thomas trade a smile and rise out of your seats. Thomas grabs a short coat and a tall top hat and escorts you out. Ms. Fontenot has already left for the evening, it seems, and so Thomas locks up after you.

“Perhaps you could tell me about the area and townsfolk as we walk over there?”

“Mhm! Of course, by moy- I mean, my boy. Ugh.” Thomas hiccups again. “Yes, I shall definitely be getting something to eat. Perhaps some bread… Daniel does make a fantastic baked fish, though.” You pat Thomas a bit on the back. He thanks you.

Your walk continues. It’s nice having some company, and the town presents a happy sight to your tired eyes.

“Yes, Jacky, let’s talk about where you shall be living for the next two years, shall we?” You nod, and Thomas smiles up at you. “The surrounding land is simple enough: your farm and Franc’s ranch to the west. The forest and shrine south of that, y’see?” He gestures to his left palm as if it were a map. You follow along as best you can. “The town center here, of course… And to the north is the old mines, we have rather famous caverns for the area, and to the south is the bay and marina. Hm-hm. Yes.”

Thomas counts something off on his fingers silently.

“What am I forgetting… Oh! Silly me! Alice and her machine shop is to the West - you might like her, but, some find her a little eccentric I suppose. Terrell and the library is on the western side of town as well.” Thomas taps his chin a few times. You continue walking down the sidewalk; the stars are making an early appearance, and the air is cool. “In any case, Jacky, Allen at the inn can tell you everything you need to know about the townsfolk. He works the bar - hears and sees everything, but of course.”

“But of course.” The two of you chuckle.

“Well, here we are! Let’s head inside. I can introduce you to anyone, if you’d like. And we’ll get you a room and a meal!”

“Thanks, Thomas.”

“Certainly. Any time, Jack.”

The two of you walk into the restaurant and inn - The Flaming Duck - and you expect to see everyone in town in the place, as Thomas said. However… there aren’t many people here at all. Or, well, not many people compared to a restaurant in the city.

“Jack? I’ll have to excuse myself for a moment. My apologies. Allen is straight ahead at the bar - he’s a good man. He’ll get you set up with something to eat and a room. Tell him it’s on me.”

“That’s very generous of you. Thanks, Thomas.”

“Think nothing of it, Jack! The way I see it, this is but a small step towards paying off my poker debt to my good friend: your grandfather.” Thomas throws his hat and coat on a nearby rack and waves you off. “Now go make some friends at the disco! Or whatever it is adults your age do.”

You laugh. “I’ll see you later, Thomas.” The two of you disengage; you head towards the bar. Thomas, for his part, walks off to the bathroom with some urgency.

Sitting down you notice the bartender is busy talking to a sad-looking couple who are dressed like farm workers meets bikers. You wonder what’s up with them. The three of them are deep in conversation and, so, realizing it might be a bit before you get to talk to “Allen,” you take a moment to scan the other residents in the bar. It's an interesting assortment.

The closest two, along the wall near the pool and dartboard, are a couple of girls dressed down in jeans and boy's style t-shirts. They kinda stand out. Well, maybe not “stand out” so much as “they’re making a scene.”

The taller one wearing a baseball cap is weakly smacking an arcade cabinet while simultaneously lamely kicking it with her foot.“I swear, if we got donations like this machine steals dollars, I swear we’d-”

“Gwen? You are a priestess. Priestesses should not swear. Therefore, you should not-”

“I know, Alice…” Gwen sighs. She bangs her head against the cabinet a couple times. You can't really see her expression behind her long brunette hair.

"Perhaps we should try darts again."

"But Alice- you know I suck balls at darts!"

Alice pulls out a tiny notepad and a pencil from behind her ear. "I am now taking note that you said 'balls,' Gwen. Your mother shall not be pleased."

Gwen sobs a bit and drops her arms and head onto the cabinet face. "A-a-l-l-ice.....! W-why do you have to be so mean?" She starts rubbing her eyes as if crying.

"I am not being mean, Gwen. I am merely doing as your mother asked of me: monitoring your behavior while your mother is not with you."

Gwen sighs again. "But.. But, Alice- my mother is always with me, right? With me here?" She points to her chest, and you drag your eyes away from her two bouncing treasures. "In my heart?"

Alice moves her attention away from the notepad. "That is an interesting conjecture, Gwen. And it would render my taking notes unnecessary, according to your mother's instructions..."

"You don't need to watch over me if my mother is always with me, right?"

"Correct. Hm. I shall think about this... But, still, your behavior..."

Gwen sighs again and flops over. You shake your head and are about to look away, but then Gwen jerks upright in a quick motion and stands up straight. She's got a power stance now: her hands on her hips, her feet planted firmly, and her expression - no, her wide smile - is now brighter than the midday sun. You’ll have to ask her what brand of toothpaste she uses.

“You’re right, Alice! I’m a priestess! And priestesses don’t let machines get the best of them!” Huh. Interesting. You don’t think it’s forced, but she seems just as exasperated with “Alice” as she is with the machine - but she’s covering it up with more enthusiasm than a new lieutenant on inspection day. “I’ve got to be strong- stronger than this no-” she kicks the machine, “good-” kicks it again, “stinking-” one more time for good measure, “machine!”

She sighs once more. “I know that ‘I am a priestess and we priestesses are the moral backbone of the community and-we-should-always strive to do our best and inspire-those-around-us…’” She drones on in a practiced manner, “But as a moral authority I think I’m allowed to call this machine out on its stealing, no-good ways! And this is my one time to relax, hanging out with you!”

“Aw.” Alice stiffly walks up and pats Gwen on the back. “I am honored that you spend this time in my presence. We are friends. As a friend, then, perhaps I could take this vintage, 1980s-era trackball Uni-500 cabinet apart for you and get your dollar back...Gwen?”

Where did Alice get those needle-nose pliers from?

“Where did you get those pliers from, Alice?”

“I have my toolkit, and it would only take a secon-” Alice looks like she’s about to tear into that thing, as promised, but Gwen stops her by the shoulders.

“No! No-no-no-no! Not again, Alice! Remember what Allen said last time?”

....

You chuckle to yourself and tune the rest out. The barkeep’s still busy. Looking around, there’s still…

You note Franc and Tara sitting in the corner; the two of them are laughing and seem to be having a good time. Tara’s a beer and a half in, Franc’s at three. Hard day’s work needs a hard night’s drink, you guess?

You make a note to say hello after- actually, best to give them their space. But what you can do is…

“Hey,” you dial into your text messaging app, “Checking if your phone has texting - Jacky”

You smile and turn back to the bar. Allen’s headed your way. It’s about time, but you won’t hold it against him. Seems like the guy is practically running the place by himself right now!

“Good evening, there. My name’s Allen - it’s a pleasure to meet you.” Allen offers his hand. You take it and the two of you share a firm shake.

“I’m Jacky - Jacky Richmond, I’m Roger’s grandson. It's a pleasure to meet you, too.”

There’s a fleeting look of sadness in Allen’s eyes, but it’s gone as quickly as it came. “Roger was a great man. It’s a pleasure to meet you, Jacky." He offers a winning smile. "What can I get for you tonight?”

“I’ll take your baked fish. Thomas said it was great!” Allen smiles brightly at that, looks away and (perhaps unconsciously) starts tapping his temple.

“Oh come on, now! It's okay. Daniel's the one that cooks it, anyways." Allen laughs. "Thomas is a good one. His words are too kind - I’ll have to thank him next time I see him. But, first: anything for you to drink, Jacky?”

“He - Thomas - is actually here with me and he’ll probably be ordering the bake as well. I’ll have… a pale ale, if you have it. I’m not sure what he’d like - some water would probably do him some good. He was looking a little rough earlier.”

Allen raises an eyebrow at that. “Scotch?”

You nod. “Scotch."

Allen laughs; it’s boisterous but also light and clear. “Completely understood; I’ll get him some milk, that’s usually what he does on a night like this. Milk, IPA, and two bakes. You take bottles?”

“Who doesn’t?”

“My man!” And Allen throws you thumbs up. “Bottle it is. Coming right up; I’ll be right back.”

-....

Allen is back shortly thereafter with your drink and a chilled glass, of a cow’s finest of course, for Thomas. It’s around that time that Thomas joins you, but he’s looking a little deflated from earlier.

Allen just inches the glass of milk towards Thomas who is slightly slumped over the bar. The mustachioed mayor takes it with a weak thanks. “So, Jacky. You’ll be living here, I take it? Take over Roger’s farm?”

You wipe a bit of foam off your lip and give a short nod. “Yeah, yeah. It’ll be a nice chance. I hope I can do gramps and the farm right. I’ll, uh, I’ll need a lot of help, I guess. I really don’t know anything about farming - I’m from the city. I think, maybe, Tara and Franc could give me some advice? I met them earlier. They gave me a ride into town.”

Allen points towards their table and nods, “Franc and Tara are good people. Tara’s got a bit of a chip on her shoulder lately but… don’t hold it against her. She’s lost a lot in a short amount of time. Family. You understand that better than anyone. And Franc’s just quiet - but he’s a softy. Nothing he loves more than Tara and the town.” Allen looks you in the eye. You share a poignant moment, as if he's quietly saying, "I know they're rough, but they're the good kind of rough."

You turn and look at the first people you met from Sunnyvale.

Tara and Franc are blowing straw papers at each other; Franc’s got a few stuck in his beard. They're laughing and having a good time. You turn back to the bar and settle into your drink once more. Allen picks up a mug and begins to wipe it down with a cloth.

“So, Allen, you seem pretty insightful, if you don’t mind me saying. I mean that as a compliment - Thomas said you knew everything there was to know about everyone.”

“That I did, m’boys.“ Thomas states weakly from the stool next to you, “that - that I did. Allen, y'see, has a sharp eye. Could be mayor one day.”

Allen gives Thomas a disapproving gaze. “You’d have to die first, Thomas. And if you keep drinking yourself sick you’ll end up that way sooner rather than later.”

“Oh balderdash.” Thomas blows sharply through his whiskers.

"Well, anyways. Allen, could you tell me about some of the residents? I'm already familiar with, uh... Alice and Gw-"

"Alice and Gwen," Allen finishes for you. "Yeah, they're polar opposites, but they're two peas in a pod. Gwen wants her freedom, Alice wants everything in the world to be in order. Ones a priestess, the other's a-" and he starts yelling here- "MAD SCIENTIST THAT WON'T STOP RIPPING APART MY ARCADES!"

"Sorry Allen!"

Allen sighs and supports himself on the bar with both hands. "How-am-I-supposed-to-run-a-business-like-this?"

Thomas just laughs to himself.

"Anyways, Jacky, they're good folk too. And, uh, that family back there," He points towards the family you noticed, "they own the marina. Cyndie's the daughter, Clyde and Courson are the sons."

Personally I find a lot of kick ass action girls tend to be poorly written. Ice Queens would also be higher up if they are legit and its not just a front. People tend to like it more when an Ice Queen persona is just a front and it makes them easier to write especially if you do the hybrid because of it. I suppose enjoying a proper ice queen is an...acquired taste. Then again I did date a legit one and certainly takes some getting used to.

>>648013
That...that is true. Reason why Clutz and such is lower is due to how often they are poorly written...not really with the archtype itself.

Also hopefully there will be a bit of a gender balance. I will admit to get annoyed when spammed by chicks. You really start to wonder where the hell all the dudes are.

“Carl, Kathy, Cyndie, Clyde and Courson. They’re your fishing and sailing experts. Clyde and Courson are the biggest troublemakers in town - something about twins, I swear - and anything bad that happens usually gets blamed on them. Just watch-”

Allen cups his hands around his mouth and shouts to the restaurant, “Who in here broke my heirloom wok?!” and one by one, without even looking up, the bar patrons start shouting out in response “Clyde!” or “Courson did it!” or “Clyde and Courson!”

You look at the Clyde and Courson and see the two young adult brothers high-fiving each other.

“Wait, was your wok really broken? Your heirloom wok?”

“I don’t even have an heirloom wok, Jacky.” Allen shrugs and goes back to polishing his mug. “But Daniel does.” And that's when you hear a scream and a series of curses, in heavily-French-accented-English, come from the kitchens in the back.

“It’s actually broken?”

“Oh, no. But Daniel doesn’t know that, yet. And the twins just love the attention.”

Thomas offers that they "Revel in the infamy, those twin scoundrels."

“Interesting.” You think to yourself. Looking back at the marina family’s table, you see that Cyndie is sitting there quietly listening as her mother and father have an involved conversation. Clyde and Courson look to be having an oyster-eating competition. Or maybe they're just really hungry. You finish the last of your ale.

“Let’s see… And then you have Lia and Kari, the two good-for-nothings in the aprons. I'm kidding - but I have to crack the whip on them sometimes. They work for Daniel and : they help around however they can and keep the inn tidy and in return I don't kill them. This week."

You just nod along.

"They’re on break right now, I guess. They’re always on break.”

“How long have they worked here?”

“For a couple years, now. Them and Cocoa moved out here after they finished up school and the three of them live with Cocoa’s brother. Hell if I know why. I guess Cocoa and her brother lived here originally, but I don’t know why she came back…”

“Allen! You must not speak ill of the town so lightly” Thomas, leaving his pained silence, pipes up again. “This is an outstanding town with a rich heritage! There is much to be proud of for a resident of Sunnyvale!”

“Uh-huh." Allen drones back, "Look, I don’t disagree with you, Mayor. I just don’t understand things from their perspective. What do girls like that see in this town that they can’t get in the city?”

One thing has been bugging you, though. “What about the couple over there? They don’t look like your average resident: I mean, I haven’t seen anyone else in a leather jacket. Or wearing a sword. That is a sword, right?”

“Jam and Garreth? Yeah, that’s our resident adventurer and geologist, respectively. They hang out over by the caverns. Jam - excuse me, it’s actually Jamie - hunts whatever crawls out of the abandoned mines up north. She says we have ‘an overly active leyline,’ so hopefully that explains it for you. Garreth studies rocks. I know it’s more than that, but all I can focus on is his hair whenever he tries and explains it to me.”

“The pompadour?”

“Yeah. I told him he should reconsider, but there’s nothing Garreth’s more proud of than his hair.”

“Garreth’s hair aside - what is there to find in the caverns? Can anyone go mining?”

“As far as I understand it, Jacky? Yes.”

Allen explains that while anyone can venture into the mines, it’s only Garreth and Jamie that have the expertise - or the insanity - to really set up shop and head down into the depths regularly. There are gems, resources such as stone and clay, treasures, and whatever remains of an old mining infrastructure. Allen recalls Garreth mentioning a minecart system that shows a lot of promise - but has been stubborn when it comes to actually working.

Of course, there’s also the dangers present. Jamie is proficient in taking out the beasts, both the mundane and the magical, that inhabit the mines. Allen isn’t really certain on why Jamie fights the beasts the old fashioned way instead of with, say, a gun, but there must be a good reason for it. Allen mentions that he has heard her complain several times about not having any “backup,” so she is probably on the market for a partner. Or some assistance of some kind, at least, and Garreth isn’t a fighter. It's not his forte.

In short, heading into the mines is dangerous but doable. Alice, the machinist, could also very well be interested in some of the materials and resources that can found in the caves. That’s worth looking into. Allen recommends asking Jamie for further details and a better explanation.

“And the marina? Is the ocean good for fishing? That’s something I have really missed. Did it a couple times off the shores of Korea when I had the chance - so, almost never - but it was good while it lasted.”

Allen explains that “not only is the ocean good for fishing, but we’ve got a lake and a decent river, too.” The Turners - that’s Carl, Kathy and the kids - could give some more information on where, exactly, you can catch what and when. Allen warns, however, that Carl likes to challenge any would-be fisherman rather than helping them ouright.

“It’s a source of pride for their family, you see?”

You, on your second ale and halfway through your baked fish, nod along intently.

“Carl isn’t going to just tell you where everything is and how to catch it. You’ve got to earn it - only the, uh, what’s the word… Hey! Gwen? What’s the word you use when someone’s been ‘brought into the fold,’ or they are ‘the chosen,’ so to speak?”

Gwen turns away from the pool table and takes a confused, concerned look at Allen.“You mean ‘anointed?’”

Allen throws Gwen a thumbs up and another bright smile. “Yes! That’s it! Thanks!” Then he turns back to you. You shovel another helping of hot fish into your mouth. “Anyways, Carl’s only going to share everything with the anointed. Same with Cyndie and Kathy, though I think Kathy would be buttered up just as much by something baked and delicious. Pastries, mind you. She’s critical of baked fish.”

Allen pouts a bit. “Trust me.”

You chat for a bit more, and it turns out Allen enjoys fishing “occasionally,” and would appreciate any bass that you could throw his way. Makes for the best bake, in his opinion. He also hangs out with Cocoa’s brother, Chaney, and Garreth every Saturday night at Chaney’s house. They play cards, shoot the wind, that sort of thing. Allen says you are welcome whenever you find the time.

You thank Allen, and around that time Thomas begins to excuse himself to take an “early evening.” Thomas explains to Allen that you are to be given the best accommodation for the night. Allen mentions that the dungeons are freshly cleaned, and Thomas bristles momentarily. Allen laughs it off with a “of course we’ll give him the best room. I’ll have Kari and Lia see to it. We don't even have dungeons here.”

"Yet."

...-

With that said, Allen gestures for you to follow him down the main hallway of the inn. You head to the main desk and, after signing in, you receive the keys to your room.

“Kari! Lia!" Allen yells from the receptionist’s desk, "We have a guest!" The two girls drag themselves in shortly after. After Allen chides them on their posture they stand at attention, hands placed in salute.

“Kari, Lia: this is Jacky. He’s Roger’s grandson - may he rest in peace - and he’ll be living here from now on. For tonight, though, he needs a room. Please take him to the Bullrush suite.”

Kari and Lia give short nods. Kari pipes up, asking where your luggage is. It embarrasses you slightly, but you admit that all you have is on hand. That seems to be a relief to the girls, though; they must not like carrying heavy luggage.

You follow them up the main stairs of the inn. Kari throws a few niceties about the weather and the trip to Sunnyvale your way.

>cont. 2/3 (I was wrong ;__;)
>>

“It was Jacky Richmond, right?”

“Yes." You watch the girls march up the stairs, and try to not stare at their stockings any more than you already are. "Kari, right? It’s nice to meet you.”

“Oh, no. The pleasure’s all mine, Jacky.” Kari, who had been walking in front of you alongside Lia, flashes a small smile back your way. “I hope you like it here in Sunnyvale. The valley has its ups and its downs, but it’s alright. Right, Lia?”

Lia had been quiet this whole time, and it doesn’t look like that’ll change anytime soon. She nods but, otherwise, doesn’t say anything.

“Lia…! What do I always tell you? You have to at least talk to the guests if you’re ever going to have a chance to be employee of the month…”

“I simply thought my answer was sufficient. I had nothing else to add - but, if you wish, I will confirm that Sunnyvale is a pleasant place, considering.”

Kari just “tsk’s” and shakes her head. “That’s good enough, I suppose. Come on, Mr. Richmond. Your room is this way, sir." You clear your throat. You're not used to being called that. "Is there anything that either of us can provide for you to make your stay more comfortable? A chilled drink, perhaps? Extra pillows? Will you require a wake-up call?”

Lia mutters something under her breath; neither you nor Kari can hear exactly what she said.

“W-what? Lia, did you - you can’t offer to keep his bed warm, Lia!” For a moment you wonder if you heard Kari right. ”That’s inappropriate!”

You did hear her right; your heart skips a beat. You haven’t had something like that happen in… how many years?

Kari has taken Lia by the shoulder and turned her away from you, leaving you standing in front of your bedroom door wondering what’s going on. “Please, Lia, when I said to warm up to the customers, I didn’t mean…” You hope this is a misunderstanding. You’re almost positive it is; but, still...

“Kari. Please.” Lia, for her part, seems to be comfortable with dealing with Kari mishearing, or misunderstanding, things. “I simply asked if he would like a bedwarmer. Winter only recently passed and there is still a chill at night. Let’s not have this silliness again, hm? Remember what happened last time you got the wrong impression in front of a guest?”

“You’re right. Yes. Of course. Forgive me,” and Kari bows to Lia. And then she bows to you. “Forgive me, Mr. Richmond, sir.”

>”Erm, you really don’t have to call me sir.”
>”No- it’s okay. I would really like a bedwarmer. I get cold at night.”

“Er, Kari?”

She looks up at you while still bowing. You deliberately avoid looking down her blouse. Good Jacky.

“You don’t have to call me ‘sir,’ and the apology isn’t necessary. Everything’s fine! It was just a misunderstanding, and I appreciate Lia thinking about me like that.”

Lia nods her head serenely. “I was simply doing my job.”

“Well, I appreciate how considerate you both are being. Everyone in town has been pretty nice so far, really. I can’t help but feel welcome. Thank you.” And this time it’s your turn to bow your head.

“Aw, geez. You’re pretty nice, huh, Mr. Richmond?” And then, to your ultimate surprise, Kari starts patting your head. “You’ll have to give Allen lessons on how to be a gentleman sometimes! He can be a real jer-jerk… jerkoff!”

Lia covers her hand with her face. “Kari, let’s not talk about our proprietor that way, yes?” Kari’s face is red, but she’s wearing a satisfied smile.

“Right,” you begin, but you don’t know where to go with this… “Well, that bedwarmer sounds great! I’ll get settled and, uh, should I come down and get it?”

“Oh, no! Lia or I can bring it right up, Mr. Richmond! You just relax and leave everything to us! We’re experts!” Sure you are, Kari.

But you can’t help but be bemused by how earnest and kind in spirit she is. It’s a nice contrast to Lia’s serene, upstanding demeanor.

About ten minutes later and you had decompressed, unpacked, and settled into the bathtub. Tomorrow promises to be a big day, and you haven’t had your own room and your own bathtub in a while… Might as well kick back and relax!

About ten minutes later and you had decompressed, unpacked, and settled into the bathtub. Tomorrow promises to be a big day, you need to be in your best shape possible, and you haven’t had your own room and your own bathtub in a while… Might as well kick back and relax!

The water’s warm, you’re lathering up, and life is good. You smell like…

“What does this bottle say? ‘Enchanted Night’s Dream?’ What smell is…” You sniff the shampoo. It’s like plums meets the perfume your mom used to wear. “Ugh.” Not your particular go-to fragrance, is it? “Beats smelling like a jarhead, though…” And you quietly laugh at your personal jest at the unthinking machine that is the Marine Corps.

>20, 16 [CRITICAL SUCCESS]

That’s when your hearing, trained by years of anticipating a Chinese sneak attack, kicks in and you hear your door open in the main room.

“Mr. Richmond?” It’s barely a whisper but you can hear Kari calling out for you. What the fuck is she doing? “Mr. Richmond, are you dead? I have your bedwarmer! Mr. Richmond?"

Silence. You wonder if she left.

"Maybe... Maybe he needs help!" Nope. She's still here. Fucksticks. "I better get Lia. She'll know what to do!”

Your training kicks in. There are several clear courses of action, here. But, first of all, you take the most sensible route. You get up, tip-top over to the door and lock it. Or, well, you attempt to lock it. The lock doesn't seem to be working. Must be too old.

"Shit."

You call out quietly at first, but firmly nonetheless.“Kari? Kari, this is Jack - I’m fine. I was just taking a bath.”

“Ah! Mr. Richmond! Are you okay? When I knocked on the door and didn’t hear a response I got worried you had suffocated or drowned or something!”

You can distinctly think of three other things that you might have been doing, would have precluded you from answering, and would be much more reasonable explanations. Still, there’s the fact of the matter that she could have just left the heater or electric blanket or whatever at the door.

“Kari, why not just drop the warmer at the door and I’ll pick it up when I’m done with my bath?”

“Ah! Of course, Mr. Richmond. I didn’t realize you were bathing - my apologies, sir. Do you need someone to scrub your back? I can send Lia in after you.”

“Ms. Kari-” You tap your fingernails against the door frame. “Have you asked a guest that question before?” She answers in the affirmative. “Have they said yes before?” She says one has: Ms. Fontenot.

“Well, I’m not Ms. Fontenot, I assure you. I’ll be fine by myself.” She agrees. Kari then says that she’s glad you’re alright and once again says that she and Lia are there for anything you might need. Then she insists that you please wear a towel when walking around the room.

“Excuse me?” She repeats her statement. “No, Kari- I’ll wear a towel. Sure. But why? I’d really prefer it if you didn’t come into my room like this again.” She posits that she could be concerned for your safety. “I promise I’ll be fine. There aren’t any Chinese or Koreans in this room, right?” She says she isn’t sure.

“I’ll check when I get out. I’ll be fine.” And that must be good enough for her: she apologies once again and then leaves. “By the Goddess. That was almost more stressful than my tour.”

You are able to finish your bath in relative peace and quiet after that. Once you get out and dry off you have a text. You see it's from Tara; she finally responded to your text from earlier.
