Previously on 1940's Mech Quest...

You decided to join the brand new Mech unit in Colorado. You have already trained for 2 weeks at Fort Huey, impressing your squad. You hope you can keep it up and finish strong.

You're in Staff Sergeant Mills office, it's been two days since your trial run with Corporal Werner.

The Sergeant doesn't look too pleased. You stand in front of his desk, the Sergeant flips through some paper work, and gives you a dead stare.

What's this about?
It can't be about Werners report, he said it would be good.
Maybe he lied?

"Do you know why I called you in here Specialist Grant?"

You fight the impulse to shrug your shoulders,
"I don't know Staff Sergeant, is this about the time trial?"

"It is true, you did break the old record. But it isn't about that. I was looking over Corporal Werners report, and read something interesting. It looks like you used a bridge you should not have. I asked Werner why you two would traverse something dangerous like that. He said that you two did not know about it being condemned. I know there was a notice and warnings posted on that bridge. Is it true that you two didn't see any of those warnings?

Sir, Battle is inherently risky. As a mech pilot it is my job to weigh, assess and take on those risks necessary for the completion of the mission. My mission was to lap the course as quickly as possible

Further, under battlefield conditions it is to be expected that infrastructure will be significantly degraded and understanding how to operate in spite of the danger is a must

I knew that the bridge appeared to be in poor repair and decided that in spite of this it could be safely traversed - and t was. That being said, it was not to my knowledge that it was strictly off limits

"Specialist Grant, you are still a trainee, making a call like that is above your pay grade."

Sergeant Mills sits back, and thinks for a bit.

"The bridge is still up, you better be thankful for that, or I would discharge from my unit. You will be punished for acting so recklessly, I'll let you know when I decided what I'm going to do. I should let Werner know what happened, I'm sure he is worried.

You find him behind the hind legs, tools out, looks like he is replacing small things, like nuts and bolts.

"Hey Werner, got a moment?"

Werner, turns and looks sick.

"Is it bad? How much trouble are we in?"

"It's going to be ok."

You let him know what happened, and what you said.

"If it comes to it, I'll take all the blame."

"Nah, look we were both there. If I wanted to I could have radioed in what was going on, but I didn't. We are in this together... You said the run doesn't count?"

"Yeah, that's what I was told. Damn shame."

"Grant, do you know who currently holds the record?"

"I don't."

"Staff Sergeant Mills."

Classes begin on reacting to enemy contact.

You learn that most enemies don't want to fight a Mech head on. Sometimes your location is compromised and will be attacked from a great distance. Best to get out of there as fast as possible before your Mech is damaged and can't move at all. You study and are tested in class before you go out in the field to practice.

You are back in as the pilot, Sergeant Norton explains the drill, there are mortars in the distance, they will try to hit you. Don't let that happen. The mortars will be using chalk, so you will graded on how orange Zeus ends up being.
There will be three rounds of indirect fire coming your way. Good luck.

I'll save the chalk round for when things start to get bad.
Just need to make it through this round, almost done.

The first rounds fired at you are one at a time, but the time in between is not as long. After the first 7 hit, you hear it, multiple rounds heading your way, you time it, and fire.

As soon as the cannon fires the mortars hit, must have been 6 or 7 of them. You round lands adding to the already large cloud of orange.

YES!

More incoming your way and you stay on the move, the rounds hit and keep adding to you concealment. The rest of the indirect fire seems to be random, just hoping that they hit you.

You lost count of how many shots where fired at you, the radio comes in and lets you know that the exercise is over, bring it back to the others. Time for a debrief.

You get back to the hangar, there is some orange on Zeus, but you think it's from the wind blowing chalk onto it.

Sergeant Norton lets you know that you did a great job, using the cannon was a pretty good idea. He says to keep up the good work, and lets you know what next week has in store.

You have squad training. A little town was built for unit movements and you will practice using the Mech near populated areas.

You also will be getting personal training from Sergeant Norton, a little hands on class.

He gives you the next day off, finally! Free time would be nice.

You and the squad walk through the tiny town. There are 14 buildings. If you try to navigate Zeus through this town you would tear down buildings.

You learn about over watch and rules of engagement. This training is rather boring so far. You mostly watch and wait, you are asked questions about whats going on and radio transmissions, making sure you are paying attention to whats going on.

A few members of your squad and some infantry men begin moving through the town, practicing clearing buildings.

You all about give up on learning anything new today, but the radio changes that,

"Zeus, this is HQ, we have sources saying that you have two enemy Mechs inbound on your location. They should be on you in five mikes.

Here's what I suggest:

>D

Order your men to begin retreating away from village...
