This is Boruto Quest, a quest set in the universe of Naruto. It is during the generation of Naruto's son after everyone has graduated from their Genin exam. I haven't kept up with the series beyond the end of the original one, so this one is intended to recapture the feel of that time of Naruto. I will not be incorporating the main show or the Boruto movie's plot into the quest, although some recognizable characters will be present. You play as a 12 year old Chunin named Takeshi. You have been assigned a Jounin squad leader named Hanto, and your two squadmates are Kichiro, a young delinquent, and Ai, a strange social outcast of a girl. You are of average skill in most aspects, although your sharp intelligence, and your jack of trades skill set have brought you far. You have just recently graduated to a Chunin after winning the final tournament. You've been regularly completing missions as a Chunin, and making progress in training. Currently, you're seeking knowledge on the summoning Jutsu. A secret mission from Kakashi.

You head deeper into the darkness. In order to conserve the fuel of your lighter, you only check the path every now and then. The hoot of an owl that had led you down this path is mostly silent at the moment, filling you with a sense of confusion as you go further. Is this really the right way?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ce-iuloaJU

Looking directly up, you can see the moonlight through woven branches. In a brief instant, something blocks the light and flutters past.

Again, the hoot of an owl draws you down the path. You take off in a sprint, the sound of your footsteps breaking the silence of night in a rhythmic fashion. Kicking off of one foot, you jump onto a tree and run vertically up it's trunk. Leaping backwards, you kick off another tree and start to bounce between them to climb. In a moments notice you've popped out of the top of the treeline, and the moonlight clearly illuminates the empty air above.

A common barn owl is flying away from you. It's difficult, near impossible to see in the night. The tell tale hoot keeps you focused while sprinting on top of the branches.

What on earth are you doing?

It's difficult to keep a bead on the bird, but not impossible. Without it's hoots you'd easily become lost. As it is now, you have no idea if the path that was beneath you is anywhere close. You'll have to trust in this potentially random animal if you don't want to get lost. Either it's hunting, or it's going somewhere. If it swoops in on something you'll know to head back.

For now, you focus on the workout of leaping from tree top to tree top. You're having to land perfectly on the heel of your foot so that you don't slip off, and pushing off with all your weight. Using a little chakra to accelerate your movements keeps you pushing forward. Alternating from leg to leg, you think you could keep this up for quite a while. A droplet of sweat trickles down the side of your face.

Some time later, the bird goes in for a landing. You've traveled impossibly far into the forest, with no real way of knowing where you are. The moon has moved to the side of the sky, casting less light.

As it swoops between the trees you jump down, and skid down a tree trunk. Using your chakra to slow the slide, you make an easy landing. All the while keeping an eye on the owl. As it is, it's simply resting on a low branch.

You take several calm steps forward, until your foot cracks a twig. The owl's head spins around, and gigantic yellow eyes stare at you.

"Okay, what the hell is your problem?" the owl says.

"Oh..Well, I'm looking for your people."

"My people!?" The owl says. "I've got no idea what you're talking about, kid. I'm just an ordinary owl. We don't have many good connections."

You blink, a little stunned. "You can talk!"

The owl's head turns back around forward on it's body, and it jumps and spins around to face you. "Okay, so you've got me there. You want to meet the Owl Clan, is that what you're getting at?"

Taking a step forward, you grin. "Yeah! That's it exactly. Could you lead me to them?"

The owl laughs, hooting accidentally a few times. "Kid, why on earth would I do that?"

For a few moments, you're quiet. You're not exactly sure how you're supposed to sell yourself to these animals. You sort of figured that Kakashi had already taken care of it or something.

An idea hits you. You take out the scroll with the illustration on it, and unfurl it. The owl's eyes widen even further, somehow. "Hoo?"

"See here?" you say. "This map was given to me by Kakashi Hatake, the Sixth Hokage. He told me to make a choice on which path to go to.."

You point your finger at the map, and tap the owl. "I chose this one. Doesn't that mean that you should help me, if you can?"

The owl takes it's wing and rubs it's beak. "Hmm..Kakashi, huh? There aren't many people who know how to locate the Owl Clan anymore. I guess I can't have you going back and telling him I turned you away. That'd just be trouble for everyone involved. Alright..I don't have any choice but to take you to my boss. Stop smiling so much about it though!"

It's impossible not to chuckle. You rub the back of your head, still smiling, before coughing and taking a more stoic look. "Let's go, then!"

--

The owl flies from branch to branch, waiting for you to catch up as you walk. You're are fairly tired from your travel. It sort of surprises you that the sun hasn't really come up yet. "Hey, do you know what time it is?"

"I'm a freaking owl." the owl says. "I don't have a watch on me. It's only been a couple minutes since you started following me, though."

You blink, surprised. "That can't be right. It took forever until you stopped!"

The bird chuckles. "I'd cast a Genjutsu on you to get you stuck in a mental loop. You coulda been chasing that owl up there forever. While you were trapped I just watched, until I decided to let you go. You seemed pretty damn motivated to catch up to me. Turns out I was right."

After about fifteen minutes, you come through some bushes to find an odd sight.

>>632768

There is a gigantic owl, about the size of a large horse. The shoulder of it's wings easily clears the top of your head by about a foot, and there seems to be an ancient, worn saddle on it's back. There's a small leather pouch on the side as well. The face of the owl is ancient, and gray. Feathers hang down it's face like a long beard, and it's eyes are a milky white from blindness. The smaller barn owl hops along next to you. "This is Kageyama. My name is Iori, by the way. He's too old to hear or see us, but he still knows his way around the forest. This is actually my stop for now, I gotta continue patrolling the perimeter. People always trying to find us for no good reason."

You give him a thumbs up. "Thanks a bunch!"

The owl starts to hop away. "Oh yeah, there should be some things left in that saddle. It's a relic from the last human who came here. None of us have the fingers to open up the fastener."

You nod, and wave goodbye. Slowly but carefully you get onto the saddle and strap your legs in. It's a little awkward right now, with the animal standing up right. You gently hold onto his long neck. "Okay Kageyama..I'm ready!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fSn7uNXZqU

At once, the ancient owl lifts up his wings. They beat against the dirt several times, and he starts to rise. You hold on for dear life as the fowl flies diagonally upward, reaching heights that you've never seen in your life in a matter of seconds. The sheer speed is what's surprising you the most.

The wind is blasting your face back, putting tears in your eyes. You cover your arm with your face and look down.

You see the small leather pouch Iori had mentioned, and open it up. Inside is an ancient pair of dusty goggles, brown with thick glass. Snatching them out, you fasten them onto your head and look forward. Condensation and freezing air blasts your face as you go through a cloud, but you can still see.
>>
>>632768

Looking down, the landscape is racing past. Rolling hills, mountains, and impossibly tall trees. In fact, the farther you fly, the taller the trees seem to get. Kageyama swoops downwards, and flies through some branches. Breaking through the treeline, you find that the trees in this part of the country are simply colossal compared to what you know.

It would take twenty or thirty men holding hand in hand to wrap around one of the behemoths you see, and they climb into the skies like skyscrapers. You never had any idea that some place like this existed in the world. There's plenty of space to fly, and even a thick mist in the distance.

As you approach, wooden structures seemingly built into the trees come into sight. It looks like an impossibly large series of tree houses, linked by bridges and large circular platforms. There are also an innumerable count of perches built onto everything, in various sizes.

Kageyama comes to a stiff landing, skidding for a few steps. You unfasten yourself and step off, your entire body vibrating.

There are owls of differing size, color, and shape all staring at you. Some extremely tiny ones hop around at your feet.

"Who?"

"Who? Who? Who?"

"Who are you?"

Various hoots and who's come from everywhere at once.

"My name is Takeshi. I'm a Chunin from the Hidden Leaf Village. It's nice to meet you, everyone."

The crowd responds with pleasurable hoots, and many of the owls seem thrilled to have a visitor. A few of the tiny owls have fluttered onto your head and shoulders, and are jumping around. The crowd of larger ones are starting with an assortment of various questions, such as your reason for being here or what sort of things you like to do. It all makes you laugh. You hadn't expected the clan to greet you like some sort of tourist in a small town.

Suddenly, they all start to scatter.

Behind you, there's a colossal reverberation as an owl lands. This one easily casts a shadow over you, and the wood of the platforms is creaking under his weight. You slowly turn around, and find an owl easily twenty feet tall staring down at you. His entire body is a solid black, except for his pure white face and yellow beak. His eyes are smaller than most, a solid black all-throughout. "What is your purpose for being here, child? Why did the guardsmen let you pass?"

Trembling slightly, you take out the scroll and unfurl it. "K-kakashi Hatake sent me. He told me to choose a path to take, and I chose the one with the owl on it.."

The beast leans in, and glares at the map. Once it seems to have accepted your story, it raises it's massive head back up.

"Why?" it says in a menacing voice.

You don't want to say something offensive, so you carefully choose your words. "Owls are amazing hunters, and symbols of wisdom." you say with a smile. There's a short pause, and the gigantic owl simply stands there.

There's another moment of silence. "Was that..not right?" you ask.

The bird slowly shakes it's head to the left and right. "I don't care for your opinion on my species, you simpleton. Why have you come here to us, at this moment, for these reasons? What do you stand to gain from it? What is your motivation?"

The answer that you've been sticking with for quite a while comes to mind. "Well, I want to be able to win."

The owl looks down. "Win what?" it asks sharply. You imagine that nothing gets past this big guy.

"Uh, well, fights. Battles. Conflicts. If I get stronger and keep winning, I can do my job better."

The gigantic owl continues to peer relentlessly. "I can see why Kakashi sent you to us. Do you really think that life will be that simple as long as you continue to seek to gain power? Think for a moment of any lives you've taken. Can you count them? Would you want to? Would the countless stories of the men and women who have fallen in battle not twist a brutal knot in your stomach?"

The owl's face is leaning in, and you find yourself slowly backing up towards the edge. You stop a step before, gulping. "I-I'll always do my best to not hurt people.."

Think for a miniute.
Stand tall and return the owl’s gaze.

“Have you never killed, Great Owl? Have you never taken the life of another creature to stave off your starvation? To delay your death? Just as taking the life of another is not the same as murder, so too is winning not the same as seeking power.
Would you have me stop; give up my own passion and drive to be something more- maybe even something great? Would you have me fade away into time immemorial. Should others have the right to success simply because they were born with greater opportunity?
Would you have me die?

Great Owl, to live is to seek joy and success and to see the opportunity to etch one’s ideals atop the tallest peaks. To live is to fly, though others may choose to crawl.

I do not need a grand purpose. To live is to compete, to compete is to risk one’s existence. It is when I do my job- when I face the impossible- that I feel more alive than ever.

"...I don't really have some grand purpose for living. I don't believe there's any grand reason why life should be. Some hidden purpose. I just have something I'm good at, and I enjoy doing it. Testing myself, finding solutions to seemingly impossible problems, besting foes that I should not normally be able to, risking my life in the process. The owl looks down, unblinking. "You're not on a journey for revenge?"

You shake your head. The owl leans in. "You don't feel like the world is set against you?"

"I don't think most people even really think all that much of me." you say honestly.

The owl leans it's head back, and stares at you for a few seconds longer.

Your ear itches, and you flick off a bug.

The owl looks surprised. "You're not really selling yourself very well."

"Well, I don't really have the flashy personality to present myself as more than I really am. I guess I'm just Takeshi."

Looking around, you can see various owls peeking from windows and doors in the hollowed out trees. Some are circling overhead, and others listening on perches nearby.

The gigantic owl laughs in a low, cool voice. He shuts his eyes. "It has been far too long since a fighter who was at peace with himself has arrived. No, Kakashi did not send you to me so I could crush your idealism and teach you a lesson. I'm sure he believes that you're genuinely prepared. Very well. This whole thing isn't by the books at all, but it's been so long I doubt anyone really cares anymore. My name is Kong Fu. You can just call me Fu. I'm the acting leader of this congress. Though, our sage is the true boss."

You blink. "S-so does this mean I'm a part of your clan now?"

Fu nods. "Indeed. Over the next few weeks, I shall teach you countless techniques and secrets of the-"

"Actually, I'm on a mission. I don't think I can stay very long."

The giant owl looks down at you with such annoyance you feel as though he might eat you. "Mmmm..Kakashi. Right. Then we'll be quick."

He calmly waves his wing, and in front of you appears an unfurled scroll. There is also a small pen, with a bladed tip and a white owl's quill. There are four names on the scroll, although only two are partially readable. It's no one you know from history. The other two names are so ancient that the blood it was written in has flaked off. You can only see that it's there thanks to differing amounts of dust.

Stabbing the tip of your finger, you let the pen draw a little blood. Then as quickly as possible, you sign your name in kanji. The owl nods, and swipes it's wing back over the scroll. It vanishes.

"I welcome you. You're the first human in several thousand years who has come to this place. It was built so that our kind and yours could converse and train in peace. Of course, then all the wars started sometime after you formed countries. After the last huge debacle, we've been even more wary than usual."

"The last debacle?" you ask. The owl nods. "Mmm, yes. I'm not sure how long ago it actually was. Our kind here possess an very long lifespan. I believe it was twenty or thirty years ago, when all the tailed beasts had gathered. The last big war. After that, we'd essentially chosen to completely shut ourselves off from the world. Not that we weren't shut off before that. It was a bit of a compelling argument to 'double down' on not allowing humans into our clan."

"Why are you so secretive?"

The owl looks out into the distance. "Our techniques are foreign to most lands. We have a vast knowledge of Ninjutsu, and Genjutsu. Someone such as Orochimaru could use this place for the most nefarious of purposes, without a doubt. We do not only seek to refuse undesirables, but prevent any possibility of humans using our power for their own motivations."

The owl laughs. "You seem to be largely without motivation. The first step to wisdom is admitting that you're probably wrong. As you've done so for yourself, I feel it's my duty to do the same for my clan. We can learn from each other."

"Is there any reason I can't meet the sage right now?"

The owl nods. "He is ancient. Due to his perspective on time, his responses can be a little...delayed. I understand you're on a tight schedule."

You chuckle. "True."

The owl waves his wing, and a much smaller, black scroll shows itself. "How are you doing that!?"

He ignores your question. "This scroll will show you the technique for the summoning jutsu. I'm detecting the relative strength of your chakra. As you are now, you should be able to summon only the most minor of our combat operatives. You'll soon learn how to summon individuals at request, as you get better. This technique will require a large portion of your chakra, so be careful."

You take the scroll, and thank him.

The owl sighs. "Kakashi seems hellbent on interfering with our notions of time. I don't suppose I can judge. As you are all action and no thought, we have a smell tendency to be all thought and no action. For now, I'll part ways with this scroll."

He slides a white scroll in your direction. "This is the scroll for the Temple of Nirvana. It's a powerful B ranked Genjutsu. It's capable of blanketing a large area with a sleeping effect. Your average shinobi could probably escape it with Kai, the technique used to escape most Genjutsu. Of course, not everyone knows this. Could also be quite useful for infiltrating civilian domiciles."

You bow, nearly going past your waist. "Thank you so much! I promise not to do anything rash!"

Fu nods. "I'm sure you will, regardless. Kageyama will take you back to..wherever it is you people come from.

The huge owl steps off the platform, and soars away. You can hear the sound of his gigantic wings beating the air in the distance.

Kageyama steps next to you, and hoots very quietly. You turn and look at him. The ancient owl was likely the mount of the previous human sage. The owl nuzzles your hand with it's beak, staring onward with blind eyes. You ruffle it's feathers, and it bobs it's neck joyfully.

You laugh, and step onto his back and strap yourself in. You fly through the air, asking him to take you back to the path. He somehow manages to find it despite being blind and deaf. You step down, and thank him.

It takes another hour or so to get back to the camp. It's starting to become very early in the morning, roughly around five AM. Stepping over the hill, you expect to see your friends just waking up..

Instead, the campsite is nearly destroyed. Himawari's bedroll is bloody, and torn open. The campfire looks as if it was blasted in an explosion, a crater where it once was.

You see Shinji's book soaking in a nearby mud puddle. Torn pages make a rough trail. There's also droplets of blood leading from himawari's bedroll. You also notice a few strips of black fur. Akahiko shedding.

Your friends are missing. Three paths lead towards the mist. You have no idea where Mirai is.

That's gonna be all for tonight folks. I'm feeling rather tired, but I'll be continuing again tomorrow. I'll be here for questions for a little while.

Fuck, genjutsu is so lame
>>
>>633463
Thanks for running!
>>
>>633479
Well too bad we picked the genjutsu guys
>>
>>633463
>They got fucked hard
>waifu may be dead
>Sensai's possible waifu may be dead
Oh lawd
This gonna be good
>>
>>633479
They have lots of ninjutsu to teach too.

Sealing jutsu is one of my favorite parts of naruto that never got used a lot.

An example is you'll get the ability to make "mines" from any element you know by making seals out of them.
>>
>>633509
I always knew seals were cool
Can't wait for borito to get caught by suprise With temple of nirvana
Can't wait to see salads seizure when it does happen
>>
>>633509
Did we make a good impression on all the owls?
>>
>>633521
I think he probably knows kai
>>
>>633529
yeah, basically the harder you would have purported yourself as some sort if important individual or badass or hero, the less they'd like you

their biggest problem with humans is too much pride
>>
>>633537
Knowing it and thinking to use or using it time are two different things.

>>633509
Could we make genjutsu seal mines?

>>633463
Well Shitbiscuits.
>>
>>633542
>Genjutsu seal mines

sounds possible. I don't see why not, although I'd say you'd have to get considerably better at seals than you currently are.
>>
>>633551
Would using seals on kunai to create a bounded genjutsu field possible?
>>
>>633571
Maybe. It would either only last a short while or need additional team mates to sustain.
>>
>>633591
Really? I would've thought that the seal on the kunai in roughly a circle would create a stable chakra bubble to mindfuck anyone in the radius with.
>>
>>633591
Also would Seals on weapons allow them to eat enemy attacks? Like putting a seal on our sword hilt to eat a Rasengan on a block?
>>
>>633591
Wait if we use senbons and mix that with the bells what would happen
>>
>>633598
Genjutsu is too precise for that, and it would drain chakra from the field for every person that entered since it'd be putting them under.

>>633632
Possibly, as a more advanced technique. An example of this is that there's a sealing jutsu made to absorb specific elements.

>>633638
not sure exactly what you mean
>>
>>633648
Use the genjustu field with the senbon and bell technique

Now that I think about it,that's basically the same thing
>>
>>633648
>and it would drain chakra from the field for every person that entered since it'd be putting them under.

Kinda the point it's a field of get shat on scrubs. Be devastating in massed combat.

Could a sealing field to anull certain types of chakra be set up?
>>
>>633672
the key thing is that you have wires attached to the bells to keep a steady supply of chakra to them. The seals would run out pretty quick.

If you were to put it on some sort of timed activation it might be a good trap.

>>633685
You mean like preventing fire jutsu usage in an anti-fire field? Probably not. Every time someone tries to use a fire jutsu you'd need to be able to cancel out their chakra with your own. Would be hard/inefficient

The thing with barriers and fields is that anything powerful is going to require multiple people. I.E the sound four or the barrier around the leaf.
>>
>>633706
Sealing senbon possible? A wrapped senbon that seals whoever it hits?
>>
>>633747
could we make a senbone that seals water like a vacuum?

A dehydrating senbon would be terrifyingly strong against raw flesh
>>
>>633759
would be best if they were hollow then, like hypodermic needles.
>>
>>633788
Might help depends on what Mini says. one of those would be great for delivering nasty things too though.
>>
>>633957
Might be interesting. If you can create a small vacuum inside the hollow senbon to push things out or in you could have a deadly weapon
>>
>>634233
Seal Cesium tipped senbon?
>>
>>634290
Some sort of wind-chakra infusion might be easier

Really, simply pumping mass ammounts of air into the bloodstream can be devestating
>>
>>634311
Or alcohol...
>>
>>634311
Or create a vacuum in the needle. Hits the body, blood gets pulled out via vacuum. One may not be effective but a couple would
>>
>>634311
>Really, simply pumping mass amounts of ANYTHING into the bloodstream can be devastating

ftfy

mini alive?
>>
Fun fact: A group of owls is called a parliament.
>>
>>636836
So we're setting ourselves up too be the Prime Minister?

>>

Praise be to whichever gods care to to listen, Mini's still alive.
>>
Wow, this thread is STILL alive.

Internet is getting switched over today fellas. I have extra limited data I can use for a hotspot though. I intend to do a short thread tonight later, once full connectivity is restored. To prevent electrical infetterance.
