You offer a prayer for safety in the shrine.
A prayer for understanding.
A prayer for a return home.

A few minutes’ pass and you move to exit the shrine and collect Yoru. The rain is now thundering on the tiled roof.

The doors to the shrine slam open before you can get to them yourself, letting a man with white hair splattered with patches of red stumble into the room with a shining white dagger in hand. The puddles he's leaving along his path threaten to flood the room themselves and are marred with ever increasing drops of red from a young woman he is carrying over his shoulder.

The girl is bleeding very badly, there are cuts all over her body. Looking closer you can see the white-haired man has bloody holes in his arms and legs, while the protective vest he wears is tattered badly in places.

Sakumo Hatake drops the young girl, herself coughing blood, at your feet. He says two words before he collapses to his knees, unconscious.

"They're coming."

You hear a scream from somewhere outside.

>Find Yoru, escape
>Try to get more information out of these two
>Take the Wen Qu, Find out where the scream came from
>Go to the living quarters, warn everyone by any means necessary

>Your name is Amon Shuu, a humble monk of the Water Temple.
>You have no family to speak of. Whether you had any to begin with is a question you don't have an answer to. You were just one of the many casualties of the 2nd Shinobi World War, an orphan. Your luck pulled through when a wandering monk snatched you from the debris of a border skirmish between Konohagakure and Kirigakure, your village having been reduced to rubble in the midst of battle. You were 4 years old. The monk, Myatsuu, brought you back to the Water Temple in the marshy coastlines of the Land of Water. This is where your story begins.

>Last thread learned more of your predecessor, read the account of one of the legendary sealing sages, met the traveling businessman Yoru Norihime, and acquired a weapons of legend and treasure of the water temple, the Wen Qu

The scream catches your attention immediately. Whatever did this to Sakumo Hatake and the girl may already be here. Yoru may be in trouble.

The temple may be in trouble.

Incense quietly trails around your head and about the room around you, the only noise the ragged wheezes of the silver-haired ninja and your own anxious heartbeats. The girl doesn’t move. The blood continues to slowly pool on the floor, creeping out through the small creases in the floor like a red web about to entangle you.

If the ninja were beaten so soundly, what will happen to-
“Go” Myatsuu quiety says from somewhere behind you, causing you to jump slightly.
“I shall help these two. Save your temple. Save our home, Amon.”

Without any more hesitation, you grip the Wen Qu and- white-knuckled- throw open the doors to the streaming rain outside.

You hear the scream again, this time it is that of a girl. It’s echo rings through your ears. It could only be so clear if it had come from outside…in The Temple Gardens. Your legs burn as as you run as hard as you can to the temple gardens through the rain, your gi getting fully soaked within seconds.

*pat pat pat pat*

Your feet splash throughout growing puddles as you run through the courtyard, the temple itself deathly quiet with exception to the occasional ring of steel. You think you hear a voice of two trailing from inside the walls; the monks may have woken…or something may have woken them. Who was that girl? Was she even alive? Was she the person Sakumo told you he was rescuing? The thoughts melt away like drops in the torrential rain as adrenaline breaks through your body and you reach the watery gardens.

A thin mist pervades the walkways of the meditation grounds, coiling around two bodies. A motionless man and a raggedly panting young girl, crumpled on the ground. Her legs seem to be perforated with many holes. Standing over her is none other than Tai, holding a short Jian. You catch his glance as you darts his head back and forth, a panicked look upon his face.

“AMON, THEY’RE IN THE MIST.” He screams as a shadow of a needle pierces blurs air in front of the stout monk before plunging into the torso of the young female monk. She looks wide eyed at the long, needle-like blade protruding from her ribcage, before with a jolt she flies off past Tai and into the abyss of now-thickening mist.

You don't even hear a scream.

Tai stands, gaping at where the girl had used to be. You can see him trembling slightly and you sprint towards him with Wen Qu in hand and pulling a small pot of ink and a brush out of your pack.
“Tai,” you shake him at the shoulders. He doesn’t respond.
“TAI,” you yell at him. He shudders and slowly looks at you. You see small wet streaks down his face.

“I…couldn’t save her.” He mutters

“Tai, snap out of it!” You slap him across the face. This seems to finally snap him out of his daze as he blinks a few times in surprise, his eyes dilating.

“You need to warn everyone. Go find the guest and get the other monks. I need you to protect them, do you hear me?” You shake him at the shoulders for emphasis.

He brushes off your hands and regains his stern composure, “I’m not leaving you alone. We’ll fight together.” He then notices the golden staff you’re carrying, and stares at it in confusion.

“No, the other monks don’t even know we’re being attacked yet. Myatsuu is occupied with two injured guests in the shrine. The merchant, Yoru, needs protection. They need you Tai. We need you. Help them.”

“I’m npot going to leave you here to die, Amon!” Tai cries out at you. “I’m not going to let another of my family die in front of me.”

“TAI, GO” you gesture towards the temple, “The sooner you help them the sooner you can come back to aid me, but they need you first. More may die if you stay here.”

Tai remains expressionless for a moment, before finally nodding. “Don’t you dare die here, Amon.”
Glancing around at the skulking mists, he runs towards and into the temple.

You turn to face the broad gardens in all of their wet silence. The waters lie as pristine and still as a painting, the only movement the static downpour of rain and the bobbing of plants in response to it drumming beat. The only noise the patter of rain on water and cobblestone.

It is as silent as a grave.

You quickly stand the Wen Qu on the ground, dip the smaller handheld brush into the ink, and paint the unfamiliar Iron Armor Seal onto your arm. It’s problematic in the rain, but as you quickly make the swipes you feel the ink harden and imprint on your skin like a carving in stone. You suddenly feel slightly claustrophic as the air tenses around you, as if you’re suddenly constrained within a tight space. You can’t help but feel a little safer, however, as you reach to take out a sealing tag out of your bag.

Except your bag is no longer there, as a single sliver of steel shoots from thin air and into the fabric before bouncing back into the mist- bag along with it.

~Oh, little fly, little fly, how you buzz about so ~
echoes a voice, deep and sonorous, along the gardens and through the white fog.

~Replacing your companion will not spare you, merely trap you in his web~

The mist abruptly parts as a masked, tall man seemingly materializes out of it.

Your response is a curt as his entrance, as you quickly lunge forward immediately, roll, and plant your golden staff through the attacker’s stomach. Training almost daily with Tai seems to have paid off a bit.

Wait, through?
The masked man looks down at you curiously as you grit your teeth and push even deeper. Streams of liquid trickle down your weapon as the man lets out a small chuckle.
Suddenly, the figure bursts into water in front of your eyes.

~Interesting creature you are, little fly. So eager to die~
You backtrack slightly, looking around for the source of the voice.

~A fly so determined that it would attack a spider…~
~Come, monk, dance a dance with death~

You bring the Wen Qu up instinctively in defense. Not too many options here.
You hope Tai has alerted someone by now, you’re not sure how long you may be able to keep this man occupied.

The waters continue to pitter-pat with rain in the gardens and the shingles of a nearby gazebo crackle with the pace of the downpour. The mist continues to roll across the waters.

>How to fight?

You just need to play this safe, draw things out and hopefully Myatsuu, Tai, or the other monks can come help. Now, if you could only see wh-

You see a shape come flying out of the mist to your right, aimed at your head. You duck instinctively as if this was another practice round with Tai and the sword sails past and buries itself in the stone. However, with a jerk and crack you see it's planted firmly in the stone with a small wire attached to its hilt...

Sailing out of the mist with wire in hand, the swordsman follows his blade as he thrusts a knife at your neck. You parry the strike at the last second with a whirl of your staff.

The man hits the ground while grabbing his sword simultaneously, before rolling and pivoting to face you on all fours without a sound. You're already breathing a bit hard, you're not sure how long you'll be able to keep this pace.

He plants a foot and pushes off, exploding towards you with a speed you can hardly track.

[92 vs DC 80: success!]

With a slight whistling of the air, the swordsman is already directly in front of you, the rain briefly blown back for the few meters where he once had been and in the area between. You jump aside from a strong thrust of the man’s blade aimed directly at your heart. Without pause, he looses a flurry of flickering strikes with only small motions of his wrist. You managed to block the lethal ones, but can’t stop from being sliced on your arms.

“Do you really think you can live through this? Is one young girl truly worth your life, monk?” The swordsman coos as he effortlessly continues his assault.

“I wonder what is worth more to you, your temple or your ideals?” he muses calmly as a strike slips by your guard and catches you in the thigh.

As he throws out another piercing strike, you shove the oversized end of the Wen Qu into the ground and twist, releasing the brush from its covered end. The pole feels surprisingly comfortable in your hands, as if it was just part of your arm. With no more than a twitch, the Wen Qu is between you and the attack. The needle-like sword clangs off the side of the pole and taking the opportunity you step back and swipe a spirit bind seal onto his outstretched arm in several precise strokes.

“My faith is my life, beast.” You spit, “You will have neither it nor this temple today.”

Immediately, the man’s arm slumps and the sword drops out of it- though he catches it quickly with his other hand. He looks at his arm quizzically before he plants the sword into the ground and begins making seals with his free hand, jumping back into the mist as he does so.

You immediately turn heel and sprint into the direction you think you saw your bag pulled earlier. You’d bet there are a few tools in it along with some sealing tags that you could use, though you can’t be sure as Myatsuu had packed the bags himself.

Laughter echoes through the humid air and droplets of water sting your eyes and break your clear vision.

~Run, brave monk, run! Where is the strength of your belief now- facing death?~
Jolts of pain wrack your body as knives launch from the mist almost randomly, leaving gashes on your legs and sides. You hear a steady clapping of feet on stonework as you imagine the clones are chasing after you somewhere. But, in the white of the mist you spot a small bundle. With no time, you run up and grab the surprisingly heavy weight and keep moving. Looking down, two empty, glassy, brown eyes stare back up at you.

It’s the dead girl.

With a cry, you drop her body and tumble back.

And onto your bag.

You reach inside a grab a handful of whatever finds your groping hand first, and come back with three explosive tags, a bottle of ink, a blank tag, and a fucking apple.

“Got you,” whispers a voice from behind your back.

Without any other warning, you’re seized by pain as a needle-like blade pierces through your shoulder and into the ground in front of you. The Wen Qu clatters from your hand onto the stones in front of you.

“Just returning the favor for my arm, little fly” The swordsman whispers.

From the mist emerge three lanky figures. Each slowly walking towards you.

From the distance, a bell begins tolling an alarm. Good, Tai managed to alert the rest of the Temple. The group of clones looks up in annoyance.

“Too late for that,” the bored voice states, “They’re already dead, they just don’t realize it yet.”
“As for you,” the man puts a foot onto your pinned back, “It was fun, but I’m out of time to play with you”

It’s not over yet

With your twitching, shuddering arm under your pinned body, you silently attach one of the explosive tags to the apple.

The clones get closer.

You stick another tag on the ground underneath you as well.

The clones are around you, blades upraised and about to strike.

The bell continues tolling.

You cough and toss the apple over your shoulder. With a small *whop*, you know it hit the man in the face.
A grunt of surprise later you hear the his confused voice,

“An…apple?”

Then, a sudden explosion and you’re pelted with wet fruity residue. The air smells briefly of apples as the rain slowly washes it away.

A clone moves to execute you, but you throw a pot of ink in its eyes and the sword aims wide, instead piercing you in the side instead of through the heart. Before the other two can act, the ground beneath all of you explodes in a flash and you go flying in a storm of rock and fire, the sword dislodging itself from the ground below and leaving your shoulder.

Flying through the air, you crash into the ground flipping and sliding. Your feet touch something wet and your body finally grinds to a stop with your legs resting fully in the meditative waters of the Gardens.

You can’t feel your right arm and shoulder and are having trouble breathing. Not good. You can barely keep yourself from sliding into the water completely, let alone pull yourself out.

The mist begins to slowly clear and you can see the beginnings of a sunrise to the far east. Looking across the way you see a crater where you once had been moments before your explosive exit. There are three large puddles near the gaping hole, what was left of the clones you’d wager. You try to chuckle but just end up coughing up a bit of blood.

As the mist continues to clear, you see more shapes materialize from the former wall of fog. Perched on the walls, surrounding rocks, and around the Gardens are easily a dozen armed ninja, all wearing headbands with the same, distinct marking on them.

A single woman breaks from the ranks. She has wild red hair, teeth sharpened to points, and two swords hanging from her side.

“Quit playing with your food, Kushimaru, we have a job to do.”
She looks in your direction and grimaces, “especially considering how weak your prey is.”

Next to you, a figure begins to emerge from the water head first. It’s the swordsman.

“Don’t let his looks deceive you, Ringo, there’s more to this little bug than meets the eye. He’s a crafty one, if not a bit…”

he turns to look at you for a moment,

“disarming.”

“Whatever, did you find the girl or not?” The woman, Ringo, asks impatiently as the bell continues to toll. “Some of the men reported having trouble with an older monk on the other side of the temple.”

An older monk? Could they mean-

“Trouble? I hope I haven’t caused too much of a hassle~” a jovial voice calls from the Garden gazebo.

All heads turn to face the infiltrator

It’s Myatsuu

“I had meant to be a bit more of a problem than that, after all,” he chuckles, rising from his seat.

The water begins to swirl under you. The waters envelop your lower body and you can feel your wounds stitching themselves together.

“Amon,” the old monk calls over to you, “I’d meant to give you a proper goodbye. To tell you, but I could never find it in me to accept that you might leave. I never wanted to believe it.”

He turns to look at you, smile on his face and tears in his eyes. “You’ve grown up so much. I’m so proud of you. It was by the binding of fate that I found you that day in your village, and it is by those same binds that I must say goodbye. You must escape.”

He approaches the clamoring ninja.

“Leave here, find what you seek. On your way, you will inevitably come across the other temples. Tell them of what transpired here, they will guide you on your way.”

Other Myatsuu’s, clones, begin to form and rise from the water. The grounds of the temple begin to shine slightly and you see patterns in the stones. The waters have reached your arms, and you feel tissue and muscle regenerate under their embrace.

“ I do have a single last request…”

The woman, with a fierce cry, leaps forward and slices the man in two….but he simply turns to water and reforms before her eyes.

“…Should you ever come back, bury my body among the orchids in the courtyard, they do look so lovely in the spring,” he smiles in your direction.

At that, clones of Myatsuu all form in front of the ninja present and all are trapped in small, watery spheres made from the surrounding moisture.
“Tai has taken Sakumo and what monks remain to the Fire Temple. You will find Yoru and the girl at the temple gates, I think you may be able to help her.”

He’s holding them off long enough for you to escape.

You can't find it in you to make words. You simply nod vigorously and pull yourself out form the water. You calmly walk towards your bag, the clones of the High Priest stop to smile and whisper words of encouragement to you as you pass by them.

'You're a prodigy among sealers, believe in yourself."

"You know what to do, you've always been so smart."

'I'm proud of who you have become, Amon."

"Do what you were born to do."

As you grab your bag, you notice the scorch marks and the large hole in its canvas.

Adds character, you think.

As you collect your belongings, the wild-haired woman bursts from her cage, screeching. Flailing like an animal, she cuts down clone left and right....but they just reform, smiling.

There isn't a real body among them.

The swordsman just looks at you from his prison, silently. His gaze speaks a thousand words, all silent. He would follow you to the ends of the earth, for the prize you denied him.

You walk towards the temple door and pause.

"Myatsuu...thank you. For everything. I'll come back some day."

And you leave, without looking back.
--------------------

'What's happened? I was woken up by a strange bald guy in a panic. Are we still-"

"Yes, let's go," you cut off Yoru Norihime curtly. "We should hurry."

You pick up the sleeping, bandaged girl leaning against the front gates of the temple and hold her in a fireman's carry. You look back towards the temple, nearly silent except for the sound of a woman shouting.

And silently, you turn to walk down the road ahead.

'So, about our destination," Yoru begins, jogging up from behind to walk next to you, "I know we're under a tight schedule, but there are a ~few~ towns along the way that I may want to stop by..."

I'm unfortunately pretty used to this kind of traffic. Original ideas don't get too much publicity

there were a ton of ways for that encounter to go. You win about...none of them though. You just had to buy time against a goddamn Swordsman of the Mist.

Considering the circumstances, not a bad job.

Should you ever decide to return, you'll learn more about the old monk, what happened, and what exactly it was he did.
