I am afraid.

This was my choice. Mistress offered me the chance to back out and let her handle this task, like she originally intended to. "I'll be brave." I thought. Even if it's scary and I'm all on my own, I'll be brave because a witch shouldn't be afraid. Right?

Cinnamon offered to help too. Sure, she didn't actually know what she was offering to help me with, but neither did I, not really. But the chance was there, the chance to not be alone like I am now. The chance to have somebody to ask for advice, to stand behind you, and maybe hold my hand during the really scary parts. But "I'll be brave." Of course I will, I have to. Because a witch shouldn't be afraid, not of anything.

"I have to be brave, so I will." Is what I thought.

I don't think that anymore. In fact, being afraid is what I've done for almost the entire day so far. Afraid, after Papa found out I had secretly become the apprentice of a witch, afraid of what he would think, what he would do, if he would still want me... And I still don't know. Mistress said I'm stupid to think he wouldn't, but he was REALLY angry with me. Not even Sis has ever made him THAT angry. And she doesn't know him at all so how could she possibly know? I know Papa much better and I... have no idea what he's thinking now. And now that I think about it, I don't think I ever stopped being afraid of that yet, I just forgot about it for a moment.

I was even more afraid when he made me lead him all the way to Mistress' house, of what he would say and do when we got there, but even more of how SHE would respond to it. How would she punish me for what I've done, what she punish him for yelling at her? She didn't do any of those things, in fact she managed to make him calm down a bit, talk to me for a bit, until I made him angry again. And then he left. Just like that. And I still don't know... Do I still have a Papa? Or is Mistress right and I'm being an idiot for even thinking that question?

"And when has idiocy stopped you before?"

The inhuman voice promptly drags me back to the present with its question, no longer allowing me to hide within my own mind. To hide from her.

I am afraid.

The daemon Vanda.

Not demon, but daemon. Mistress wasn't entirely clear on what the difference is, but she certainly doesn't reek of sulphur and hellfire or anything. In fact, if I was only looking at her, I would not think to be afraid of her. The flowers that (she?) has sprouted around her are fragrant and colorful, the way that the plants wrap around her form in the shape of a lovely dress is dazzling, and her kind smile could comfort even the most timid of children.

"How kind of you to think that." She teases me, yet again demonstrating that even the deepest part of my mind is in her power.

And that's exactly it. I don't just see her, I feel her. An invisible presence all around me and even inside of my mind, that leaves no doubt in my heart. This beautiful creature is raw, primordial Power, the kind that only the Gods Above could surpass. The choice she is offering me is a choice only because she allows it. If she willed it, I would be hers in body and mind, perhaps even soul. Why she restrains herself, I do not know. Some kind of compact as old as the world itself? Boredom, perhaps? Or could it be that she... actually cares?

And as for the choice... "Do you want me to do what your Mistress is asking of me, Nadja the Robin?"

Such a strange thing to ask. She won't accept Mistress' offer, but she'll do it if I ask her? What kind of reason does she have for that? Whichever it is, she surely won't tell me.

"I can't choose yet." I tell her, my voice still trying to recover. "I need to know what she asked of you first."

"Do you not think your Mistress would have simply told you if she wished you to know?"

"Well yes, but..."

"And did you not choose just a few moments ago to NOT look at her letter to me for exactly that reason?"

"Yes, but-"

"And yet now you wish me to tell you?"

"I... have to know if I'm going to have to choose. At that time, it was her choice, now it is mine. Making a choice without knowing what I'm choosing would be..."

"Idiocy. Very well, then I will tell you."

But why do I feel as if this choice has only made her happier?

"The request from your Mistress is simple: A means by which a werewolf can be restored to its previous self, permanently and non-lethally."

Wait, werewolf? So there really WAS a werewolf? That's what the potion I found in Camille's backpack was for, but if Mistress is asking for that now then... Did it fail? This sounds even more important than I thought! Now I understand why Mistress would ask Vanda for help! But then...

"The price?" I ask her cautiously.

"Does the price matter? I have already rejected her offer, the price is irrelevant."

"But then what do you-"

"The price I ask of YOU, Nadja the Robin, is that YOU ask me, not on behalf of your Mistress but on your own and of your own will. But if you must know, the price she suggested was 10 years. You already know her age is not what it appears thanks to the magical means by which she slows her ageing, correct? She offered me 10 years of completely natural ageing, 10 years which will never be returned to her."

Is that how you pay this daemon? Why is something like that valuable to her..? And if she doesn't want that, what does she want? There must be more to it than just me asking her. Some kind of catch. But what is a polite way to ask-

"There is reason YOU should worry about being polite, my little angel."

Angel? She really called me that?

"You're right, there IS a catch. I can easily produce a tool such as what little Julie is asking, of course. But it would be strictly personal. Or in clearer words, it will only work in the hands of the one who asked. You. If you agree to this, YOU must be the one to solve this little issue of hers. A fact I know will infuriate her greatly. And yet... it is better than returning empty-handed, is it not? And now that you know, you are ready to choose."

Mistress WOULD definitely be angry. She told me not to make any agreements with Vanda, and she probably wouldn't be happy about me placing myself in danger either. But... would she be happier if I returned with nothing? And if she came back here herself, the price would probably be even higher than before. Isn't it better if I do this for her?

NEW STUFF: In order to make it easier for you as players to know your options I've made a kind of simplified character sheet to give you an overview of witchy things she can actually do. In addition, I've made changes to Nadja's Notebook that should hopefully make it a lot more useful. It's not divided into sections to make it easier for you guys to find her notes on, for example, a specific spell or potion. Finally, I've also added a section with brief descriptions of the characters in the quest, in case you need a reminder about who a character is.
Please let me know what you think!

>Nadja's Seniors:
>Mistress' current opinion: 25/100
>Lily's current opinion: 05/100
>Camille's current opinion: 10/100

>Seal: 85/100

>Nadja's Witchy Skills:
>Herbalism : Initiated (Potions and such!)
>Pencraft: Fledgling* (Hexes and wards!)
>Infusion: Uninitiated (Making things be magic / enchanting!)
>*Nadja has proven to be naturally talented at this set of skills. She learns more quickly and has a chance to intuitively understand this type of magic simply by looking at it.

>Resources:
>Nadja's Notebook is intended to serve as your reference material for witchy things and other stuff related to the quest. It's divided into the following categories:

>1. General Witchcraft
>Intro to Nadja's Notebook as well as any witch-related topics outside of the three major arts will go here when Nadja learns about them: http://pastebin.com/FvemAzKN

>2. Herbalism
>Everything about herbs and how to use them to make potions. Also contains Nadja's notes about potions she has encountered but don't know how to make herself: http://pastebin.com/vMWeFhd0

>3. Pencraft (Yes I renamed it because I think it sounds cooler)
>Hexes and wards that Nadja knows of and how to make them: http://pastebin.com/BTUR8F94

>4. Infusion
>The art of bestowing magical properties to items that otherwise had none. For example, the creation of wands or flying brooms. Pastebin will be added once Nadja actually learns about any of this.

>5. Nadja's Notes
>Where Nadja writes her notes about various things, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE PLAYERS REQUEST THAT SOMETHING BE ADDED TO THE NOTEBOOK. You can even request to have old events added, so don't be afraid to ask: http://pastebin.com/76btWGte

>6. Characters
>Nadja doesn't actually keep a written list of people she knows, but it seemed a list would be useful since a character could easily be absent from the quest for a month or more of real time, and it seemed more fun to write it in Nadja's voice even though she has no reason to ever write it. Anyway, you can find that here: http://pastebin.com/GbRsNuw3

Time to apprentice!
>Don't make a deal, Mistress said not to.
Not because of Mistress but because that's a silly price to pay without research and consultations at the very least. I bet we could get it done for 7 years at most! Besides, there's also the distinct chance that price would be a lot lower if it haggled with Mistress. Probably made it up on the spot.
>>
>>618481
>Make the deal, pay the price.
Better to hurt her feelings than hurt Camille, right?
>>
>>618481
"If you want to for her to be angry, then what's the price YOU are asking me? Is ten years of my life or something else?"
>>
>>618481
>Make the deal, pay the price.
>>
>>618513
She wasn't asking for years of aging from us, that was what mistress offered. It's still completely unclear what she actually wants from Nadja, so there's no way to make such a deal. I'm not sure if Friend is doing it on purpose.
>>
>>618520
This.

THE DAEMON DIDN'T SAY THAT WAS THE PRICE WE WOULD BE PAYING, JUST THE PRICE SHE ASKED THE MISTRESS!
>>
>>618527
No, that's what mistress offered. If she was the one asking then the deal would have been made already.
>>
>>618526
Oh right, I suppose it parses like that upon further study. That just makes it even more suspicious though. A shite deal makes the cost obvious, one with barely any strings attached could have any number of consequences.

I bet there are other daemons who could do the same thing anyway, we can just go back and then find someone else to do it.
>>
>>618481
>Make the deal, pay the price.

She already told us what our price is. The price for Nadja is that she ask of her own free will. Quite a bargain compared to 10 years.
>>
>>618534
It is suspicious, yeah. It's even more suspicious that friend is having the daemon read all of Nadja's thoughts that aren't suspicious, but not the ones where we wonder these things like we were in the previous thread. But then that's OOC I guess. But it still makes it obvious that something is being hidden or backtracked over.
>>
>>618539
She isn't asking that. She just said what our price is right here:

>"The price I ask of YOU, Nadja the Robin, is that YOU ask me, not on behalf of your Mistress but on your own and of your own will.
>>
>>618535
No she didn't. Asking for clarification is a GOOD IDEA.
>>
>>618539
She isn't asking anything except for Nadja to make the request yet.
>>
>>618535
No she really didn't, we should ask what the price we would be paying would be.
>>
>>618481
>Don't make a deal, Mistress said not to.
Mistress would be upset but understanding that this is what she instructed us to do. I don't think she'd be understanding of the other option
>>
>>618556
The phrasing makes it pretty clear that is the price, I'd say. At least the only one it will state outright.
>>
>>618547
"So the price you are asking is for me to ask you? That's it? Nothing else? No clever wording? No hidden bargains I am not aware of? No secret contract that will you do terrible things if I am the one asking?"

I'm seeing a lot of doubt around, so just to be COMPLETELY clear for everyone, I'll go with >>618567
and then be back with you shortly. This will be quick and short one so please stand by.

>>618481
>"There is reason YOU should worry about being polite, my little angel."

Well that's an embarrassing mistake. Actually, she was supposed to say there was NO reason for Nadja to worry about being polite. That kind of matches the little nickname better.

>>
>>618570

>>
>>618586
>>618577
Disabling them doesn't help me use them.
>>
>>618582
For me it sounded that it was a reference to a hidden past we know nothing about, like we got killed for being rude.
>>
If the only real drawback is that we have to deal with the problem personally, I think we should go for it. We're trying to be a good witch, and Vanda likes Nadja enough that she isn't going to send her on a suicide mission. I won't say Mistress is being overprotective, but I do think we should be able to handle this.

Probably want to ask for even more details on what we'd be expected to solve first, though. Jumping into things is still dumb.

Keep in mind that if we consult with Mistress the price will almost certainly be higher when we come back.
>>
>>618590
It sounded like you hated the ID colors and didn't want to see them anymore.

Opera aearch function counts how time times a search term apears on a page if you wanna count how many times the same id apears.
>>
>>618597
If the price is higher because of something as petty as that then this is obviously not the sort of being we should be making deals with.
>>
>>618609
Why do you think I said THESE colors after pointing out four specific posts? I like the colors in general, but not when four IPs get almost identical ones.
>>
>>618597
My problem was not knowing what the price was. I am actually okay with saving Mistress daughter but not in a blind deal.

Also Opera says the bR27um+x ID appears six times in this thread so far.
>>
>>618614
She's trying to get us to make the deal of our own free will. Consulting with Mistress and deferring to her is the exact opposite of what she wants out of us. It's not petty to change the price.
>>
I ended voting for a clarification. Not to ask Mistress.

We are too nice to not save Mistress daughter unless the price is too high.
>>
>>618624
Look, even if you're right about that, you're not being precise enough for it to get through. It isn't the exact opposite of what she claims she wants, it's the exact opposite of what she's plotting against us.

And I'll remind you that we aren't in a position of disadvantage - we have no reason to take the first one that's given to us without even finding out what it's about. That would be completely idiotic in every way unless we were desperate somehow.
>>
>>618637
What would Nadja do?

Nadja would try to help others unless the price was so high it would take away her freedom permanently, since that goes against the witches code and prevents her to help others in the future.

Making Mistress angry DOESN'T MATTER IF IT MEANS SHE WILL SAVE SOMEONE!

"I want to become a witch and witches don't care who they make angry or offend doing what they want to do. Part of my oath was to help others and I will save Mistress daughter even if Mistress punishes me for me for doing it!"
>>
>>618579
>>618481

"So... all you want is that I ask you? Nothing else? No clever wording or secret contracts? You REALLY just want me to ask you, and then that's it? I won't owe you, I won't be your slave or anything like that?"

For the first time, I'm pretty sure, I hear her laugh. Genuinely, as far as I can tell, not just a friendly mask to comfort me.

"You really have grown a lot more than appearances reveal. But no, my little angel, I absolutely PROMISE you that there is no clever trick or hidden contract between the lines here. It's wise of you to be cautious, but I guarantee you, the only downside is exactly what I told you. You will be the only one with the means to -fix- the little doggie, not your Mistress or her daughter. Well, that and of course, the fact that doing so will be quite dangerous for you. But you already knew that, so I saw no reason to mention it before now."

"But... what do you gain from this?"

She rolls her eyes briefly, then leans toward me, bringing her face-to-face with me.

"For my kind, every action serves only one purpose; to strengthen our domain. You growth strengthens my domain, allowing me to gain an advantage against the others of my kind, however slight. That is my motivation. And now I must insist that you make a choice. Even angels cannot ask for infinite time."

Nothing. She promised that she will take nothing from me. But she... becomes stronger through helping me? I'm not sure that really affects me at all, she's already so much stronger than I am.

So the question is, do I defy Mistress and risk a very dangerous situation in order to help her and Camille, even though she probably doesn't want me to? Or do I leave all of this to someone who has been a witch for more than a week?

>Make the deal with Vanda even though Mistress would want me to NOT make the deal?
>Don't make a deal. I'm completely in over my head. Let Mistress decide what to do and how to handle all of this.
>>
>>618637
I already said that we should find out more information about the task we'd need to do personally to get the tool to work. It is stupid to agree without knowing that much, yes.

And it's literally impossible for Nadja to ask Vanda on her own and of her free will after consulting MIstress.
>>
>>618674
Nadja is also very careful to be obedient to those she thinks have authority over her, in this case that translates to mistress' VERY SPECIFIC orders. And Nadja is also apparently scared shitless of the dangerous daemon in front of her, making it even more of a question.

That's why these things are left up to votes. Either way would still be in character, depending on the interpretation you use. You have yours, I have mine.
>>
>>618684
Ask her what exactly "fixing the little doggie" entails. We still don't know what we're agreeing to here.
>>
>>618684
"I want to become a witch and witches don't care who they make angry or offend doing what they want to do. Part of my oath was to help others and I will save Mistress daughter even if Mistress punishes me for me for doing it! So yes I accept your deal!"

>>
>>618694
She's made it clear that we don't have infinite time for questions. This is all the clarification we're getting. Don't push her patience.
>>
>>618709
A simple question isn't infinite time. We've been talking for a grand total of less than five minutes. She's obviously rushing us to decide without knowing what the decision is.
>>
>>618684
>>Don't make a deal. I'm completely in over my head. Let Mistress decide what to do and how to handle all of this.
>>
>>618674
Mistress' daughter Camille is not currently in danger. She WAS in danger at some point, but not anymore. She's recovering in Mistress' home and her recovery is not affected by this deal. I hope this is clear even though it's actually been a while since the thread where you checked on her.
>>
>>618684
>Make the deal with Vanda even though Mistress would want me to NOT make the deal?
I'll take the leap. It's the witchy thing to do, and we need to be a witch! At least by agreeing we'll forge a business-relationship with this thing...which probably can't hurt. Maybe.
>>
>>618709
Besides, what would she do if she does get annoyed? Attack us? In that case we were right to be suspicious, weren't we.
>>
>>618684

YES SHE IS IN DANGER! SHE IS IN DANGER BECAUSE OF A STUPID WEREWOLF CURSE!

Oops I got carried away, sorry about that.
>>
Clearly this is practice for helping Amalia!
>>
>>618728
We don't even know who has the werewolf curse.
>>
FriendQM, does Nadja know what an Angel is?
>>
I'm guessing her domain being strengthened is because we're part-fairy. We have a purple Sparkle in us and had to make that choice between Winter (blue) and Summer (red) when Camille's defensive ward hit us.

We might be Hope's reincarnation too. We should ask Papa about the "miracle" of our birth sometime.
>>
>>618735
Yes we do, Nadja just got told it by the daemon and Nadja figured it out, in character.

Sure she could be wrong, but Nadja things the Mistress daughter is the one with the curse.
>>
>>618740
She likely knows the exact same things as she knows about demons.

>>618747
No, Nadja thinks what we think, in a translated form. If WE aren't sure of it, then Nadja isn't either.
>>
>>618735
>>618747

Tegnicaly speaking curing Mistress of being a werewolf does count as helping Camile.
>>
>>618684
>Make the deal with Vanda even though Mistress would want me to NOT make the deal?
>>
>>618742
As for why fairies are connected to the daemon covered in flowers and leaves, I'm guessing that from:

>FAIRY FACT TWO: Fairies quite literally sprout from trees, like a leaf or a flower. That flies, and talks, and thinks (sometimes).
>>
>>618747
No.

I'm sorry if I've confused you by expecting you to do remember things from too long ago, but Nadja did in fact check Camille and concluded she was in fact just suffering exhaustion from overworking her body through copious potion use. Mistress confirmed Nadja's conclusion as being spot on.

Also, I'd like to remind me that Mistress originally wanted to leave Nadja to watch over Camille. If Camille was the werewolf, that would be an incredibly poor decision from her side and would leave her with zero living apprentices.

I'll leave this open for a little while longer in case this changes anyone's minds, but so far the majority seems to want to make the deal.
>>
And you forget Nadja is quite green and knows almost nothing.

Camille could be infected but not a werewolf yet, we don't know how long the change takes, it could take days or something.
>>
>>618775
Well I'm still against it, since we still don't know what the fucking point of it is, or what the price we'd be paying means.
>>
Camille was helping out Kerstin with a special problem.

What if that problem is an acute case of being a werewolf and she forgot to take her anti-werewolf medicine? Camille was going to check on her and got hurt?

It's straight out of Harry Potter.
>>
>>618775
>>618792
"I want to become a witch and witches don't care who they make angry or offend doing what they want to do. Part of my oath was to help others and I will do so even if Mistress punishes me for me for doing it! So yes I accept your deal!"

There, happy now?
>>
>>618793
The price is that we have to be the ones to cure the werewolf. That's it.
>>
>>618801
Sure this works.

And man I should stop getting so pumped out, this is just a quest.
>>
And calling it. This might just be the longest two minutes in the entirety of the quest, but it looks like it's time to say YES to the daemon.

Looks like Nadja is going to manage to severely piss off TWO parental figures in one day. Just like a real twelve-year-old!
>>
>>618793
The price seems to be that Nadja has to defy Mistress's orders and then go after the werewolf herself. Although we don't actually know what the deal with the werewolf is.
>>
>>618806
And we don't know the first thing about what the fuck that means. Who is the werewolf? What is a werewolf in this setting? What does curing them do? Etcetera.

It's like making a deal to "cure the guy with the skin disorder" and not even knowing what hospital to go to or what disease he has. Actually it's worse than that, we don't even know if it's a guy or not.
>>
>>618811
Because you railroaded two minutes as "an infinite time span".
>>
>>618800
>>618771
>>618742

Also, just going to mention that you impress me, anon. You're not actually right about any of your theories, but your observations and reasoning are excellent. I hope geddit? to see more from you!
>>
>>618811
Not to worry, Nadja will persevere!
>>
>>618834
You're taking an exaggeration too seriously, she's just saying that she's tired of answering questions and wants a decision.

>>
>>618848
She isn’t real.
>>
>>618847
That "exaggeration" is why everyone started voting instead of examining further. Which must have been sparked by Friend not wanting to give any more information for the past few story updates. It did look like he was sweating really hard to make it look like the daemon was giving Nadja information without actually giving any information, anyway.
>>
>>618853
That we wanted to help someone to stop being a werewolf because helping others is part of our oath?
>>
>>618882
This does remind me, did we told mistress we did a spell on ourselves and now we can't lie?

We should fix that as soon as possible.
>>
>>618898
It's not that important, Nadja could hardly lie anyway, and it'll be over in a day.

>>
>>618953
We know that they fight other daemons, that their domain growing stronger strengthens them, and that Nadja falls within Vanda's domain.

That's also why she isn't going to tell us any information that will trivialize the problem. She's literally trying to maximize Nadja's experience gain rate by having her deal with something way above her level.

You think Cinnamon is a dependable knowledge source? She's been at this for around a year, right? I'd be shocked if we learned more than what we were already told about them.

This is... I still don't like this. But I'm not going to get any more answers from her, that's certain. Either I take the deal, or I leave. That simple. And yet, it's not simple at all.

If I take the deal, I'll have to be the one that deals with the werewolf problem. And she said it WILL be dangerous, though I kinda figured that out on my own already. I don't particularly WANT to be in dangerous situations, and I don't think Mistress wants me to be in dangerous situations either. But... has anyone ever wanted to? I don't think even Sis LIKES to be in danger, but if it's a choice between putting yourself in danger, or putting other in danger and maybe even letting them die from it? If that's what it comes down to, shouldn't a witch choose the former?

"Yes. I'll do it. I want to become a proper witch and witches don't care who they make angry or offend doing what they want to do. Or if it's dangerous! Part of my oath was to help others and I will do so even if Mistress punishes me for me for doing it! I have to be stronger than that! So yes I accept your deal!"

At once, I feel the dominating presence around me withdraw, leaving my mind. I feel... free? As if I had been holding my breath for a very long time and finally can breathe again.

"Perfect." She replies with more than a slight hint of glee. I'd feel a little unnerved by that, but I'm just happy to have her out of my head again. Daemons really have no respect for privacy!

She stands back straight again, then casually extends a closed hand towards me. "As promised, the means by which the werewolf may be returned to his former self. And as I promised, this will only work in your hands."

She unfurls her hand in a slow and elegant manner, strangely akin to that of a flower in bloom, and as she does so reveals... a thorn?

"This is a thorn taken from the Wilting Willow, the black sheep of my garden that stands eternally in stagnation, left there by Mara herself as a memento of our last... encounter. It is the antithesis of everything that I am. And this small part of it - Could you please hurry and take it? "Its touch makes me quite ill"

I do so, as quickly as I can but... Did she intend to tell me that?

"Thank you. As I was saying, even such a small part of it holds the power to reverse any previously undergone transformation and return any creature to it's, shall we say, true form. All you have to do is stab said creature with the thorn. Simple as that, though as I'm sure you can imagine, not quite so simple in the case of certain creatures. Oh, and if you're wondering, you can use it as many times as you please, though stabbing someone or something that has no previous form to return to would, well, simply turn them into a version of themselves that has been stabbed. By you. Mind you, I would not have given Julie anything as powerful as this, but I supposed for my favorite little angel I can do a little more"

"Uhm, thank you..?" So it works on any transformed creature, not just the werewolf? I should probably keep this safe, it sounds quite powerful. I don't like the idea of... stabbing things, but if it's to help them then it's okay, right?

"You're very welcome. Now, before I go let me just tell you how happy it has made me to see you again. Genuinely. You've grown far more than I expected. Thank you for that-"

In a single moment, the greenery around her completely envelops her and begins to shrink back into the ground. No more than a few seconds later, all that is left to tell she was ever here is a single crimson poppy flower.

"- and see you soon."

And that's it, I guess. Just like that, she's gone. But what did she mean when she said again? This is the first time we've met! Probably just trying to confuse me again... And I have more important things to worry about! What do I tell Mistress now? I can't really avoid telling the truth, but...

I think I'll first tell her what happened and then...
>Tell her I made a deal because I think it was the right thing to do and I made an oath to help as best I can and I'm not sorry.
>Try to distract her from what I did by asking why didn't trust me enough to tell me. Maybe I won't be punished quite as hard...
>Tell her how scared I was and make the biggest and saddest puppy eyes. She knows how upset I've been today, surely she'll show mercy!

>>
>>619078
I kind of wished to also be able to tell her that technically we did not agree to a deal. Sadly, Nadja did ask for the thorn in the form of agreeing to a deal. "Please give me the means to help Mistress with her issue." would not have been a deal.

In any case:

>It's kind of cheating to tell you something you wouldn't know in-character, but since it's such a frequent topic, I'll trust you to be big boys and girls.

>A familiar is a kind of voluntary slave, generally involving some kind of uplifting. The owner grants the familiar a fragment of her soul and, if the familiar accepts it, the familiar is bound to the owner for life. The familiar cannot defy the owner's will, even past the death of the familiar, but gets to keep whatever gift it was granted. In the case of an animal or fairy, that would generally be a hint of intelligence, for a spirit it'd be a material anchor (the witch) to keep them tied to the world, but in the case of a human... I have no clue what that would be.

From thread 8.
>>
>>619190
Then just limit ourselves to werewolves and monsters.
>>
>>619196
Ah hah! We don't know it in character so any ideas about slavery are inappropriate! Time to find flimflam or something.
>>
>>619157
Wait, does the thorn only work on living things? We can't stab a chair and have it turn back into a tree, right? And it can't work on dead things and bring them back to a living state?

Also, can we put it on a staff or something to make a spear of transformation reversal?
>>
>>619196
And we mentioned it could be long life. Since witches live way longer than humans, by making our best friend a familiar we would prevent her for dying before we do.
>>
>>619204
But all we need to do to get Flimflam's help is apologize for calling her a liar and treat her with respect and play with her occasionally!
>>
>>619219
Aparently it only reverses transformations, so unless it was a tree turned into a chair by magic, nope.
>>
>>619227
But Anon, she is not a cat!
>>
>>619227
Yeah, and I'd like all of that to happen, Flimflam is great. After that we give her a gift of intelligence so her IQ can rise above 40 and she becomes our familiar in return. It's perfect.

No cat, no deal.
>>
>>619238
We can have a cat familiar and still be friends with fairies. We're going to need to be friends with fairies if we want to unravel the Hope subplot, if that matters. I do want to finish her Fairy Research book.

>>619239
We can already raise her intelligence by feeding her Sparkles, though. That's the entire reason why I don't want to make her our familiar.

>"This is a thorn taken from the Wilting Willow, the black sheep of my garden that stands eternally in stagnation, left there by Mara herself as a memento of our last... encounter. It is the antithesis of everything that I am.
Is she talking about her last encounter with Mara or her last encounter with US? She is acting like she's met us before...
>>
Don't forget to tell Mistress that Redwing visited and gave us the results of our evaluation, by the way. We haven't had time to tell her yet.

That she told Nadja to not doubt herself and that she was expecting great things from her is probably a large part of why she jumped at the chance to fulfill her oath here.
>>
>>619283
Wow we have a lot of things to tell her.

And we just don't want our best friend to die before we do. Hence the familiar pact as not many ways to make a person longer exist and she can't become a witch because she is a mutant. And we are not sure if the torn will turn her human or into a fox. So really making her a familiar is the safe option to mske her live as long as us.
>>
>>619342
Plus even if she was human before she likes the way she is now.
>>
>>619357
We should still offer her the choice. I'm going to vote for Nadja to like her the way she is now when she inevitably asks Nadja which she prefers.

When did Nadja swear to help people? I don't remember that. The personal oath she made was

>"And lastly, I pledge that I will use my powers to always be the best daughter and sister to my Papa, to my Sister, to Mistress Julie... And to you!"

I guess the Oath of Ambition counts.
>>
>>619391
Huh. You're actually right, she hasn't SWORN to do so. She has only told Papa that she WANTS to protect people and help them by solving mysteries, not sworn to do it.

Apologies, that's my mistake for not checking my notes before going with a suggestion. I guess it just seemed Nadja enough that I accepted it to BE Nadja.

I'm not afraid anymore.

Mistress is scary, yes. And she is definitely going to be upset. She's almost definitely going to punish me for real this time. I've gotten off easy every time so far, but this, I'm pretty sure this is way too serious. I shudder to think what she'll do, but... but I'm not sorry. Not afraid. I am right, and if I have to be punished for being right, then I'll take it like a big girl. Like a witch.

Oh! I almost did like Cinnamon and forgot the package! I wonder if she's realized yet that she forgot it. I do kind of wish she came back right now though, after all this I would love to have someone to confide in who isn't going to punish me. But how would she know to be here?

No, this walk I'll be taking as alone as I've ever been. Just me, my thoughts, and the fact that soon both Papa and Mistress will be angry with me. I'm still a good girl, I know that, but I really wish I was back in the times when being good and being loved were the same thing. This new world where everything is complicated and mean different things is just so frustrating! Are you supposed to just get used to this? Do grown-ups live every day like this? How? Do they also have to remind themselves that they're being good and doing the right thing? Have they been hurting all this time, just like I am now, and just never showing it?

If that's true then... Then I have to help them too! They all deserve to be happy! And now I know, if it's to help others and make them happy, then I can overcome my fear! Just like...

Just like my sister?

That's what Papa said, isn't it? She does do scary things, very scary things, and the first times she left I remember being scared she wouldn't come back. Is that why Papa is angry? Maybe... maybe I need to show him that I will always come back home?

There are still several hours of daytime left when I take the final steps up to Mistress' door. In a way, it feels a lot like the very first time I came here, hoping she would accept me as her apprentice. I'm still not afraid, but... I'm very nervous. Just like that time, I am hoping that she will accept me; the new me.

"Mistress?" I call into the quiet little house. She's expecting me, so it should be alright to walk in. The sound of feet walking down the stairs quickly follow my call and Mistress appears with a grim expression on her face.

"Apprentice." She replies in a flat tone. "Have you come to explain your actions?"

But I haven't even told her anything yet!

"Uhm, how do you-"

"A little bird told me of your actions. Now, explain- actually, first, is that the package Cinnamon was supposed to deliver, let's see, three hours ago?"

"Oh uh, yes she-"

"I can imagine. Skip to the explanations. Why did you disobey my orders, Apprentice?"

Eek! The way she stresses that word instead of using my name like usual... But I prepared for this. I knew she would be angry.

"I... I made a deal with Vanda. She wouldn't accept your offer, but she gave me one. And it was a good one, I made double and triple sure. So I took it. It was the right thing to do, I know it was. And, part of my promise as a witch was to help as best as I can. So I'm not sorry. Not one bit. Even if you're angry with me, or if the whole world was angry with me, I did the right thing. So if you have to punish me for disobeying, I'll take my punishment."

>Mistress' opinion of Nadja has increased by 10!
>Mistress' current opinion: 35/100

"Then we will begin at once." She continues to speak in the same flat tone, but when I look at her I see it. She may be trying to scare me, and she's not going to hold back, but it's there. That brief glimpse of approval. I think I may have finally figured out what she's been trying to teach me.

"Your punishment for disobeying your Mistress is to dust off every page of every book in my library. You begin now, then we'll talk once you're done."

"Every.... EVERY PAGE?"

"You begin now."

Eeeegh, I thought we were going to talk about important stuff like what to do next or what the daemon told me, or Redwing's visit, or-

"NOW."

Using our powers to be the best daughter and sister and witch is a very, very open-ended oath. We don't need to worry about it unless adhering to the oath gives us special powers or something.
>>
>>619548

>>
>>619487
>>619503

10 on a best of three isn't great, but it's not awful. An amount of work is certain to be done.

Also, since anon has pointed out that I made a blunder and that Nadja's never actually sworn specifically to help anyone, that bit in the conversation with Vanda should be considered retconned.

Nadja has sworn the Three Pledges, as well a custom oath as pointed out by >>619391

Additionally, when questioned by Papa she stated that she WANTS to protect people and help [them by] solving mysteries. Consider that the 'promise' that she was referring to in the conversation with Vanda and just now with Mistress. That promise isn't really binding, but it's significant to her right now.

Apologies for the screw-up, but things should be cleaned up now, I hope.

"Blow on them."

"I thought you were going to take your punishment like a real witch?"

I get it, I get it... It's SUPPOSED to be hell, and I'm supposed to stop complaining and just get it over with. There's probably no more than a hundred or two hundred books in here, so it'll only take- Actually, best not to think about it, just work. On the bright side, I'll be more familiar with exactly which books are in her library. That might be useful if I ever need to find a book on a specific topic.

There, 10 pages done already and it's not even beginning to hurt yet! This will all be over in...

...

...

...

Huh? When did it become night outside? I don't remember the sun going down? Last think I remember is Mistress coming down for a cup of tea. I kind of wish she'd have asked me to make it for her. It would have been a nice break from this, but I suppose that's the point. She even just sat there and watched me for a while, then left without a word. But hey, at least I'm already... a quarter through the books.

"Morning, new girl!"

Huh? Someone spoke to me? Can't they see I'm busy... working?

Crepe! I must have fallen asleep! And I'm still not done!

"Heehee, this is quite a surprise!" With great struggle, I finally lift my head high enough to see the person talking to me. It feels like so long ago that I actually heard her voice, I'd almost forgotten she had one. But Camille definitely has a voice right now.

"I thought you were too much of a goody-goody to get in trouble like this, but here you are! Was it worth it?"

I don't see Mistress anywhere around. It's morning already, she might be out and about. Oh no! What about Papa! I never even got a chance to tell him I wouldn't be home, he might be looking for me! And-

"Hey, you listening?" Camille calls out in an annoyed tone. "You know, the old hag isn't around right now. You could grab some breakfast or something and she'd never know. Sound good?"

Breakfast... so hungry. So dusty. But Mistress said to dust off the books and I'm not done yet. Still, just a moment wouldn't hurt, would it?

New book. She's still there.

"But honestly, it's probably for the better that you don't. 'Cause trust me, these things are going to get SOOOOO much worse, and there won't be any chance to cheat later on. Better to toughen up right now than hit a brick wall later on!"

More? Flip the page, dust. Worse?

"Yeah I know, it seems like hell right now. You probably hate me just because you REALLY need to hate someone right now and I am kinda annoying, right? But you know, these little punishments, most of them actually came straight for THE old hags. Not just this one but the ones who were old hags before this one was even born, and those girls are BITTER let me tell you."

Dust, page, dust, page, dust, page, cough break, dust.

"Some crap about how HORRIBLE it was for them being slaves and such in the old world so they decided all witches have to go through a ton of sadistic bullshit like this. Character-building or something, they say. I say they're just taking out their frustrations on the rest of us. But hey, you wanna know a secret?"

So close now, just two more of these things.

"She HATES it."

So close to release. Must work harder.

"Yeah, she seriously hates having to do this. It's actually really easy to tell if you look closely, behind the mask she's a real pu- a real softie. Did you know that? Figure that might help you out sometime!"

Noises in the distance, can't tell anymore. Must work harder.

Silence. She's not talking anymore? A quick glance out of the corner of my eye reveals that's resting against the table, just watching me passively.

Flip, dust, flust, flust. Last book! Just a few more minutes and...

...

...

"Congratulations! Freedom at last, huh?"

"Mm." Is the full reply I can muster.

"Hey, how about I take you back to my place, make you something proper instead of the old stale bread she's got here? We can even have a chat, new-girl and me!"

But that means... leave? Mistress wanted to talk once I was done and-

"It may even involve bacon."

Huh?? Did she just say... That's expensive! I haven't had it in ages! But Mistress said she wanted to talk when I was done. What should I do?

>Accept. Real food sounds too good!
>Settle for whatever Mistress has in the house.
>Stay hungry and wait. Mistress didn't say I could take anything.
>Something else?
>>

Yeah, she is still treating us like a kid. She realised she had not lost ten years, saw our face expression and made us confess.

We must stay and chat with Mistress. We finished and we can eat, need water, we are hungry.

She never said where we'd be talking, technically.

We can't leave Mistress will get angry, we can't leave...

"YOU! YOU ARE THE ONE WHO STOLE MY CLOTHES THAT TIME!"

Mistress isn't here right now so the talk can probably wait.
>>

This

She knew we were doing the ritual and the fairy didn't do it. Also she was crazy enough to be out in a night of sparks.

What? Do you two have Camille confused with Weeping Lily?
>>

She's not the only one who knew about it, and she's not the only crazy one either.
>>
>>620230
Yeah, we'd be too if we suddenly threw accusations at people.

Looks like we'll picking things up with a breakfast session tomorrow, either in Mistress' home or the home of the third real person (fairies don't count) of the quest who's currently upset with Nadja. Either way, she'll probably be needing that energy when she tries to put out bridge fires.

Yes, I said tomorrow. I know my runtime keeps getting shorter but I'm starting to hit the point where I should just admit my weakness and end the thread before I mess something up again.

And yes, I am just going to assume this time, that you guys are interested in another two-day-session. We'll continue tomorrow at the usual time (so that's Sunday 1700 UTC).

Thanks for playing, hope you enjoyed this session and that you'll join me again tomorrow! Good night!

10 years of natural ageing were the terms. That takes 10 years to happen. For anyone but a witch (or wizard!) it would actually not be a sacrifice at all, it's just a return to her "normal" speed of ageing.

I'm sure you can guess how she actually did it.

>>620187
That's an interesting accusation. I'll let you guys discuss whether or not you want to actually make that accusation and based on what. You have until tomorrow at the usual runtime.

>(fairies don't count)
BOOOOOO. I'm kinda hoping a new fairy shows up to punish us for making Flimflam cry. If Flimflam has fairy friends. I'm starting to suspect she's a fairy pariah who was so interested in making human friends because she had no fairy friends.

>That's an interesting accusation. I'll let you guys discuss whether or not you want to actually make that accusation and based on what.
I do want to accuse Weeping Lily of that next time we meet her. Camille, not so much.
>>
>>620265
But why she is also upset with us? She is not Mistress or dad, what we did to her?
>>
>>620265
>>620314

Yeah. That makes me even more suspicious, we literally did nothing to upset Camille save ignore her when we were doing our punishment?

Why she wants to get us in even more trouble? Is she a sadist?
>>
>>620265
Night night.

I don't really understand the accusation, Seems like it could just as well have been Lily or Amalia or Vanda or some random fairy.
>>
>>620339
And Anons voted to eat food with her - -

Damn she really wants to get us in trouble doesn't she?

We already cleaned the dust of all the books, does she want her mom to turn into a frog or something?
>>
>>620373
Why would we get in trouble for not being here? Mistress did not tell us to wait. She told us to blow on books and that she'd talk when we were done. Nothing more or less than that.
>>
>>620314
>>620339
When Camille says "my place" she refers to the place where she is currently living of course, but the place doesn't actually belong to her.
>>
>>620411
Why is Kerstin mad at us? Eating her bacon uninvited?
>>
>>620411
And who is the misterious third person who is mad with us?

As posted on my twitter:

>Looks like I won't have time for a second session today after all.

So I hope I'll see you then Thanks again for playing!

i remembered that when we last met Kerstin we searched her room, broke into Sparrow's closet, and left Amalia passed out on her bed. She might be a little miffed about that.
>>
>>624834
But we weren't the ones who hurt Amalia. And it was Amalia the one who actually did the breaking and entering. Is not like Amalia is our familiar, so we aren't responsible of what she does.
