The successful destruction of the heretical device on Deck 23 has proven to be rather fruitful. Not only has the deck returned to normal space, the Warp Storm keeping you in the Kayleigh system has dissipated as well. You should have relatively smooth sailing from this point on. Well, about as smooth as warp travel can be. You just need to figure out where to take the Pearl from here.

To that end, you spend the better part of the day following the purge of Deck 23 divining the auguries. In your case, it means painting with only your Warp Eye open, while also using sanctified oils and blood from the devout. You produce several paintings before opening your normal eyes once more. The first is of a golden boat amid rapids pouring out into an ocean. It doesn’t appear to be in any danger from said obstacles, but their mere presence is noteworthy.

The second painting is much smoother. The same golden boat is pulling into a port at night. The waves are calm, and there’s a very bright star in the heavens. Usually you interpret such things to mean finding the Astronomican, the psychic beacon beaming out from the Golden Throne, will be relatively easy. Since all navigation in the Warp relies on using the Astronomican as a point of reference it’s a good omen for the trip to come.

The final painting, however, is somewhat troubling. The golden boat, tiny against rising waves, is trapped by massive tentacles. In the depths below the boat lies a gaping maw of horrendous teeth, each tooth larger than the boat itself. This could mean several things. Staying too long in the Warp might invite danger, or perhaps that there will be a deadly obstacle in the path ahead. As with all auguries, the true meaning will only become clear with time.

Senka’s Character Sheet: (Includes handy NPC reference)
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1h53V9xovaCGkwB1kkB26l6OBwahOGs22rsQe4sCA_M4/edit?usp=sharing

For those not entirely familiar with the 40kverse, I encourage you going back and reading the past threads as well as http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Imperium Hopefully between the two you’ll get the gist of what’s going on, but don’t hesistate to ask if you’re completely lost.

All rolls will go against a specified characteristic in the style of Rogue Trader. You’ll want to roll under the characteristic value in order to pass the check. The more degrees of success (every multiple of 10 counts as 1), the more awesome of a result. A 1 is a guaranteed success, and a 100 is a guaranteed failure. Best of three rolls when it’s called for, with a 1 or a 100 instantly taking precedence. If you see multiple characteristics being called for, each 1d100 counts for its respective test.

Since the last thread worked out pretty well on /qst/ I thought I’d carry on running here. It’s as much an experiment in what works as what doesn’t. Feedback is welcome, just try not to harp on about /tg/ vs /qst/.

If you have any questions/etc, just shout.

All said and done, you find yourself alone in your Sanctum. The only thing left before you can make the translation into the Warp is deciding upon a destination. Technically it’s the Captain’s decision, but so far he’s sided with your recommendations. There’s a few options from which to choose from. First being an unclaimed and uncharted system playing host to a massive nebula. It also has three planets orbiting a yellow star much like Sol. Second is a system that may have ties to the daemonic activity you stamped out on Kayleigh Prime (See Thread #4). After your trip to Deck 23 you’re in a rather pious mood. Stamping out heresy and reclaiming systems for the Imperium is a noble endeavour. Finally, there’s the nearby Pleasure World of Solace Encarmine. You’ve never so much as set foot on such a world. It might be both good R&R and an opportunity to pick up more star charts.

With all three options in mind, you…

There’s little reason for the Pearl to jump right away. Deck 23 is still being purged, and you’d hate for a warp incursion to set things back. As such, you simply note what you can for the time being and wait for dinner. You’ll bring up your destination choices then.

The rest of the afternoon you spend in quiet contemplation. When the chrono on the wall rolls over to 1800 you set off towards the Officer’s Mess. You’re one of the first to arrive, and as such have prime seating choices around the three large, wooden tables. Hillbrant’s already at the head of the largest, with First Officer Lion to his right. Since you have business with the Captain, you take the high-backed chair to his left. Both he and Lion stop talking to watch you sit down.

“Senka, glad you could join us as always,” comments Hillbrant.

“Indeed,” chimes in Lion. “I fully expected you to take a few days after your foray into Deck 23. Thanks for that, by the way.”

You bow your head in response. “It was nothing. I only wish I had noticed the heretech sooner. How goes the purging process?”

Hillbrant lets out a sigh. “Better than expected, but it’s still taking quite awhile. We want to be absolutely sure no taint remains. That means scouring every inch of deck plate twice over. We’ll be lucky if we can finish the process within the week.”

Your recent auguries are only good for five days. The longer you wait, the more cloudy they’ll become. You mention as such. “Hopefully that is the case. The stars are in our favor at the moment. Ideally we should perform a jump within the next five days.”

Lion and Hillbrant share a look. Then the former asks to no one in particular, “Where might we be headed, anyways?”

It is the Captain’s decision, after all. So you present all three choices equally with both their pros and cons. By the time you’re finished, most of the other officers have arrived. The only face you’re not pleased to see is Keyes’. He deliberately avoids eye contact and takes a seat as far away from you as possible.

“I’ll think about it over dinner,” says Hillbrant. “In the meantime, it seems as though there’s a bit of bad blood that needs addressing.”

“What, between Keyes and I?” you ask. “I can assure you that it lies squarely with him.”

“Darell did die under your watch,” Lion points out. “Even if it was unavoidable.”

“He knew the risks. As regrettable as his death is, Keyes is blowing it out of proportion. It’s not like the Astropathic Choir is suddenly understaffed.”

Hillbrant coughs into his hand once. “Yes well, I’d prefer it if my chief Navigator and head of the Choir weren’t at each other’s throats. What can I do to make that happen?”

You calmly reply, “I wouldn’t say that the two of us need ‘fixing.’ Keyes simply needs to be reminded that the Choir is not his personal power base.”

Lion tries not to laugh as Hillbrant pinches the bridge of his nose. “He’s always been like that,” says the former. “You’d be better off trying to convince a tiger to change its stripes.”

“Ordering him to calm down will only do so much,” adds Hillbrant. “As would telling him to stop lording his position over others. It’d last a week at best before returning to normal. My advice to you, Senka, is simply to grin and bear it, if not avoid Keyes entirely. So long as he does his duties and you yours then things will work.”

It’s not a glamourous solution, but one that may have to work for the time being. “I’ll do just that,” you say. “I only ever correspond with my House on a monthly basis. Aside from that I can easily avoid Keyes.”

“Splendid. I know it’s probably not what you were hoping for, but it’ll have to do. Ah, here comes our meal…”

A series of servants and servitors trundle into the mess hall and begin serving dinner. Today is some form of grox meat served over a sauce you can’t quite identify. You devote most of your attention to eating rather than the conversations around you. As such, you almost miss Explorator Forgal enter the hall.

“Wonder what he’s here for,” muses Lion. You raise an eyebrow and follow Lion’s finger when he points the tech priest out. “Last I knew he’s one of those that doesn’t require material substance or even sleep.”

Before you can reply, Forgal quickly walks over to you. He bows his head and says, ++Navigator Senka. I would like to request a word in private.++

You remove the napkin from your lap and place it beside your plate. “I was finished with dinner anyways. Lead the way.”

Forgal nods and begins gliding away. You follow the red-robed man as he exits the Officer’s Mess and proceeds down the corridor. Eventually he comes to a stop next to one of the many massive windows on this deck. Outside you can see the plasma-storm torn world of Kayleigh Prime.

++What is your impression of Kayleigh Prime?++ asks Forgal abruptly.

“Aside from the whole cultist thing we dealt with?”

++Yes.++

You consider the dark blue world for a moment. “It’s no death or pleasure world, that’s for sure. Why do you ask?”

One of Forgal’s four mechadendrites produces a data slate and holds it out to you. You take it and give it a once over. Most of it is incomprehensible binary. The bits you can read seem to indicate that Forgal’s been trying to perform a geological scan for mineral deposits.

++I believe this world is suitable for conversion into a Forge World. However, I require more accurate scans to be sure.++

“How do I fit into that?”

He cocks his head to the side. ++Your personnel file indicates you have the ability to use your Warp Eye to scan nearby space. Is this not correct?++

Ah. He wants you to use your Void Watcher power while connected to the Pearl in your navigation station. It’s not a conventional use of the power, but it might just work for his purposes. Whether or not you’ll actually come up with any useful data is unknown, though.

You’re more or less sitting on your hands waiting on Deck 23’s purge to finish anyways. You’d be more than happy to help Forgal out. You tell him as such. “...though I cannot guarantee useful results.”

His mechadendrites shiver in excitement as a result. ++This is acceptable. Please, lead the way.++

You turn around and head for one of the lifts that will take you close to your Sanctum. Forgal follows in your wake, chattering binary all the while. Your guess is that he’s talking with the rest of the Mechanicus delegation aboard. When you finally arrive at your Sanctum, he falls silent.

“Here we are,” you say as the door opens. The inside is much as you remember leaving it - an easel near the entrance with half-finished paintings, holo displays strewn through the room, and a large, imposing, arcane throne in the center. You move towards the throne and sit down in it. Before you connect to it properly, you warn Forgal, “You’ll want to remain near the entrance. I’d hate to kill you accidentally with my Warp Eye.”

++As you wish,++ he replies. He takes up position next to the easel and waits patiently for you to do your thing.

Once you're satisfied he won’t accidentally catch a glimpse of your open Warp Eye, you connect with your throne via the cybernetic implant on the back of your neck. All at once, you feel the entirety of the Pearl as if it were an extension of your own body. You suddenly feel rather restless, an almost itching feeling to do something other than sit still. Seems the ship’s Machine Spirit wants to be on its way. But that’s not why you’re here.

Using the ship’s auger arrays, you start a scan of the planet’s surface. You supplement the incoming data by opening your Warp Eye and gazing at the holo-display of the world outside. Baleful, green energy washes from your forehead as you work.

Usually your Void Watcher power is for revealing hidden dangers, such as void creatures and mines, and more mundane perils like asteroid and debris. By using it in conjunction with the ship’s sensors you’re able to glean all sorts of information about Kayleigh Prime. Best you can tell, there’s a high concentration of mineral deposits near the equator. Closer to the poles are massive geothermal vents hidden away within networks of caves. The four continents themselves seem stable as well. In all, qualities that would indeed benefit a Forge World.

You close your Warp Eye as the ship’s scan comes to an end. After disconnecting from your throne, you rise and turn to face Forgal. “I’ve added what I was able to observe to the latest scan results. Hopefully it’s what you were after.”

Forgal produces another data slate and begins scrolling through it. ++Yes. This will suffice. Thank you, Navigator Senka.++

“Anytime.”

++There is but one other thing we wish to ask of you.++

“Go on.”

++We shall require access to your charts. Or at least the one that lead you to this system in the first place.++

It makes sense. If the Mechanicus Cult is going to turn this world into a Forge one they’ll need to know how to get here in the first place. But these are technically your family’s charts. Just handing them out might be frowned upon back home. Charts are often the second or third measure of one’s House after all. Then again, this might leave the Mechanicus (and Forgal) in your debt.

As much as you would like to help him, your hands are somewhat tied. So you do your best to let him down easy. “Unfortunately, I’ll have to decline for the time being. My House is rather cautious with their charts, and I am no exception to their rules. However, I shall plead with them on your behalf and make it clear that House Girad stands to gain much from working with the Mechanicus in this endeavour.”

Forgal nods appreciatively. ++This is also acceptable. It will take time for an Explorator Fleet to be formed and dispatched. By then we may have discovered further routes that may be of use.++

“Perhaps,” you admit. “At least I was able to assist you with the geological scan for the time being. Was there anything else you required of me?”

++Not at this current time unless you wish to discuss the ship’s Machine Spirit.++

It’s true that Navigators who share a vessel’s will and embrace that fact can sometimes end up being “worshipped” by Tech Priests as a sort of “fleshy interface.” I.e. a means to interact with the ship’s Machine Spirit that doesn’t require hours of rituals. That may not be the case here, but given how Forgal’s treated you thus far it might be a safe bet.

“Depends what you’re after,” you say.

Forgal crosses his arms in front of him, the edges of his robes meeting one another. ++The re-emergence of Deck 23 has caused a 0.5% rise in temperature within the Enginarium. It has also led to increased output from the main plasma drive as well as many other changes.++

“That might explain the restless feeling I had just now,” you admit. “Like the Pearl wanted to be on its way as soon as possible.”

A whistle-like sound comes forth from Forgal’s vox unit. ++Restless you say? That would explain the oddities we have encountered. Were you able to discern anything else?++

As far as the Iggy oneshot goes, I was thinking it'd explore something the All Sisters Party came across on a Hive World. Iggy was corrupting it while being disguised and "helping" the party. Might be interesting to see how /tg/ or /qst/ handles it.
>>

“I’m afraid not.”

++I see. If you come across anything that might be of use to those of us in the Mechanicus, please let us know right away.++ He turns to leave, only to stop halfway and give you a bow. ++Thank you for your assistance.++

“You’re welcome.”

Then he departs. You’re once again alone in your Sanctum. Though before the silence is but minutes old, you receive a message on your personal vox.

“Senka, it’s Hillbrant,” the Captain says in your ear. “I’ve settled on our next destination.”

“Of course, Captain. Where will I be leading us?”

“I’d like to spend some time in a dry dock to be absolutely sure Deck 23 is cleansed and reclaimed for use. To that end, I believe the Pleasure World of Solace Encarmine will suffice our needs. Short of flying all the way back to Footfall, that is.”

“Solace Encarmine it is. When did you wish to leave?”

“Whenever you deem appropriate. We need only an hour’s notice to prepare.”

In that case, you’ll perform the jump…

You glance back at your throne, then at the paintings you made earlier. Eventually, you reply, “Tomorrow morning then, 0900 ship time.”

“Excellent. Hillbrant out.”

Your microbead chirps in your ear to let you know it’s stopped transmitting/receiving. That just leaves you with thirteen or so hours to kill. Some of it you spend drafting up a message to your House concerning the use of charts. Once it’s completed you apply the usual encryption and send it along to Keyes for transmission via the Choir. Then you retire to your quarters for a good night’s rest.

Your dreams are dark and mysterious. They’re full of twisting shapes that defy description, even to someone experienced in the Warp like you. For the most part they just sort of float around an endless void. In the instance when they collide, there’s a bright blast of light. They then leave behind a bright, infant star. By the time you awake, a veritable starfield has formed.

After performing your morning ritual (a shower followed by two cups of recaff) you head for your Sanctum. Along the way you run into fellow Navigator Marneus. The rotund man flags you down and moves to lean against the wall.

“Senka,” he begins. “Did you have any strange dreams last night?”

You can’t say that you did. “Why do you ask?”

Marneus dabs at his sweaty forehead with a bit of cloth. “I dreamt that we were swallowed up by a kraken-like creature. Normally I might write it off as a nightmare, but it felt so real.”

There’s a disturbing parallel to your third painting, the one with the tentacles and gaping maw devouring a golden boat. Is it worth mentioning though?

It’s too much of a coincidence that you painted something similar to Marneus’ dream. Though you want to be absolutely sure before acting one way or the other.

“Come with me,” you say, motioning for him to follow. “I might have something related to that.”

The two of you arrive minutes later at your Sanctum. You stride over to where your paintings lay and begin thumbing through them. Once you find the one in question, you pick it up and offer it out to Marneus. His eyes go wide as he stares at it.

“Yes! Yes it was just like this! How- no, why, do you have such a thing?”

“It came up as I was divining the auguries,” you reply. “I thought little of it at the time.”

He once again dabs at his forehead. He seems to do that a lot now that you think about it. “Maybe we should wait before going anywhere.”

“You mean delaying our Warp jump further?”

Marneus nods. “At least until things are more favorable.”

If you delayed a jump every time there was the chance of something going wrong you’d get nowhere. Then again, you really don’t want to repeat the journey that was Footfall to Zoicarro (See Thread #3). What should you do?

You’d best redivine the auguries just to be sure. To that end, you ready your painting supplies and easel for another Warp Eye-guided exercise. Marneus, being a Navigator himself, is able to stay and observe you as you work. You finish rather quickly. When you open your eyes you’re greeted with the sight of a train traveling over a bridge. Beneath the bridge is a swirling whirlpool, in which lies the shadows of something huge and tentacled. It isn’t attacking the train or the bridge, merely waiting beneath the surface.

“There it is again!” cries Marneus. “We’re doomed I tell you, doomed!”

“Pull yourself together,” you quip. “Look at it again. The train is being allowed to pass unmolested. The tracks are in good repair, as is the bridge. There’s no danger to be had here.”

“But the creature…!”

“If we stopped every time something from beyond cropped up then we’d get nowhere. It is our job as Navigators to brave such things and guide ships to safety.”

“There’s a difference between bravery and foolishness,” Marneus whines. “I only pray that you’re correct in this instance.”

You let out a huff and begin putting your painting implements away. “I’d recommend quiet prayer to calm your nerves. As for me, I have the Pearl to steer.”

“Yes. Yes of course. Excuse me…”

Marneus almost rolls out of the room like a giant cue ball. Once you’re sure you’re alone, you secure the door and move to sit in your throne. You connect to the navigation station much like the night before, via the implant at the base of your skull. Again, the Pearl becomes an extension of your body. Moving it requires the same amount of thought as moving an arm. Once you’ve checked the thrusters, you vox the Captain.

“Senka here. Ready to jump when you are.”

Moments later, the Captain speaks to the entire ship over the vox. “All hands, this is the Captain. Warp jump to occur in five minutes. Pray to the God Emperor for safe passage.”

Right on cue, you push the engines and break into the Warp with a crack of thunder. The world tastes pink for a moment, then you’re through. Now all you need to do is find the Astronomican.

You open your Warp Eye and are instantly blinded. The sheer amount of warp energy surrounding the Pearl is staggering. It’s likely the residual effect from the Warp Antenna you shut down on Deck 23. You can only just make out your surroundings. Instead of your usual cityscape, you see the Warp as a quagmire of linked swamps. The Pearl is but an airboat, surrounded on all sides by circling crocodiles. Making matters worse, you cannot find the Astronomicon. Its bright light and choir of thousands is nowhere to be found. You’ll have to power through these adverse conditions and pray for the best.

You press on despite being a third blind and lacking the holy, guiding light of the Astronomican. It’s slow, grueling work. You have to use every single bit of your training to keep the Pearl on track and above the metaphorical swamp water. The more you press on, the more putrid and toxic the swamp becomes. It eventually grows to the point where you’re having to steer through green clouds of gas that delude the senses. Combined with everything else, you’re almost brought to your knees. It’s only your sheer force of will and faith in the Emperor that keep you going.

This continues on for days on end. You’re starting to lose hope when, midway through the fourth day, things change. Like a fever breaking, the swamp beasts and miasma disappear. You still have to avoid “trees,” “rocks,” and the like, but the most taxing of dangers and distractions are gone. You don’t dare to breathe a sigh of relief for fear of jinxing it. Instead you continue to devote your full attention and skill into making sure the Pearl makes it out of the Warp unscathed.

You need only do so for another full day. On the fifth day you arrive at your destination. Surprisingly you’ve made good time. Even with the deck stacked against you, you’ve arrived three days earlier than you expected. It’s nothing short of a small miracle.

The transition out of the Warp and into realspace is rather uneventful. You end up on the outer edge of the Solace Encarmine system. The Earth-sized planet itself is covered in lush, green tropics. Orbiting it is a medium-sized station. It’s equipped with several docking points that could fit up to a cruiser, of which two are already taken. You carefully guide the Pearl towards the station, turning things over to the helmsman when you’re within hailing range.

You then begin the straining process of disconnecting yourself from your Sanctum’s throne. The moment your skull jack comes free a wave of weariness crashes over you. It’s not as taxing as before, after the jump from Footfall, but you still have to use your sword as a makeshift walking stick. You make a mental note to get a common staff in the future. Once you’ve reached the door to your sanctum you…

You’ve gone without rest and sustenance for close to a week. The only thing on your mind now is a hot meal followed by sleep. So you head back to your quarters, snagging a quick bite to eat along the way. Once inside, you drift off to sleep as soon as your head hits the pillow. It seems even your subconscious is weary - you have no dreams this night. Or, at least any you can remember.

Some time later, you’re awoken by the Captain’s voice on the shipwide vox. You only catch the tail end of what’s said:

“...is simply not enough time or spare manpower to allow everyone to visit Solace Encarmine. A shore leave lottery will be held on each deck. The winner will receive at least a week’s worth of time off to with as they like. If you have any questions, seek out your supervisor. Finally, I’d like to remind everyone why we’re here. The sooner repairs can be effected on Deck 23, the sooner we can return to our duties. Give it your all!”

You drag yourself out of bed, rubbing your eyes all the while. It takes you a bit to get moving, no thanks to your recaff machine breaking on you. Even after a long, hot shower, you’re still groggy. Luckily you don’t have anywhere to be. A quick check on your data slate confirms the the Pearl is docked with the station above Solace Encarmine. Short of a Chaos or Xenos incursion there’s really not much for you to do.

You’ve thought about asking the Captain for permission to visit the planet, but that comes with a whole slew of potential problems. The main one being whether or not a mutant like you will be tolerated planetside. After that… well you honestly don’t know what you’d even do on a Pleasure World. You grew up on a Hive World after all. The two are so drastically different that you’re floored even by how green Solace Encarmine is.

You continue to weigh your options as you create a chart for the trip between Kayleigh and Solace Encarmine. Once that’s out of the way, you…

A Navigator needs two things to do their job properly: a navigation station and a recaff machine. Without yours you feel sluggish. It’s absolutely vital that you either get it fixed or acquire a new one entirely. The former would mean flagging down a tech priest. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but you’d rather avoid a lecture about proper care and veneration of the machine spirit if you can help it. It’s not like you don’t treat the recaff machine well! Far from it actually, which is why the sudden breakdown is both disheartening and mysterious.

The other option would probably take less time. Between the 65,000 people onboard (give or take a thousand) someone’s bound to have a spare machine. Hell, you could probably put out a bulletin and have one delivered straight to your door. The downside is you’d be giving up on a recaff machine you’ve had since you were sixteen. It’s not something you can replace lightly.

As you consider your options, you absent-mindedly stare out of your window at the planet below. It occurs to you that this Pleasure World might have truly phenomenal recaff machines. Otherwise why would you call it a pleasure world?

Finally you make up your mind. You’ll…

We fix our machine. Every cup of Recaff has the nostalgic taste of our childhood. This machine practically raised us.

Finding a tech priest and having them fix your recaff machine seems to be the best course of action. You've had the thing for so long that it's practically family. You can't just abandon it!

All you have to do is find a tech priest. There’s always Forgal, but you don’t think he actually uses his quarters all that much. He likely spends his days down in the Enginarium like all of the other high ranking Mechanicus members. That or one of the few workshops aboard. You could attempt to reach him directly over the vox you suppose. But asking him to drop everything to come fix your recaff machine seems a bit silly. You might be better off going through Ruhr in his capacity as Chief Bosun. Sure, you might end up with a completely foreign tech priest, but it’ll at least be an effective use of everyone’s time.

You imagine most tech priests will be found on the lower decks. So you grab Yang and start wandering. Luck must be in your favor this day, as you come across a red-robed tech priest not five minutes into your search. Unlike the ones you’ve met thus far, this particular tech priest is lacking in the metal department. Or, at least, you can’t see all that much beneath their robes. She doesn’t even have a single mechadendrite. Were it not for the Mechanicus crest on her robes you might mistake them for someone else. It’s both good and bad.

“Excuse me,” you call out, catching their attention. “But can you spare a moment?”

She comes to a stop and turns to you quizzically. “Me?”

“Yes you. I have a task that requires a Tech Priest’s touch.”

“Such as?”

“The repair of my recaff machine.”

The tech priest raises an eyebrow. “A recaff machine? I suppose I could attempt to fix it; however, I am but an acolyte in training. It may take me longer than a more experienced Mechanicus. Is that acceptable?”

You nod. “So long as it’s fixed by tomorrow morning.”

“I think I can manage that. I’m Olympia by the way.”

“Navigator Senka. It’s a pleasure.”

You then lead Olympia back up to your quarters. When your door slides open she lets out a whistle. “Quite the place you have here. My room’s barely a fourth this size.”

“Eh, sometimes it just feels empty. Hard to fill up space when you have few material possessions. Though now that I think about it, I could always set up a shrine for my recaff machine.”

Olympia politely laughs at your joke. “Where is the machine?”

You point it out and she gets to work. Using tools and spare parts from her robes, she carefully takes apart the machine and applies the proper sacred oil where needed. “This should be a simple fix. The main fuse simply needs replacing.”

Sure enough, when she puts it all back together and presses the rune of activation, the recaff machine chimes to life.

“I don’t know how to thank you,” you say, wasting no time in pulling out recaff grounds and preparing to prepare a cup of recaff.

“I simply did as I was tasked,” Olympia says. You do still feel like she’s owed something though.

Just finished looking through the archive, this is well written, good job.

Didn't care much for the decision for our protagonist to be female, but your reasoning of the waifufags shitting up the quest if we went with a male is definitely sound.
>>
>>70803
Quite simply, it isn't in the cards for us to find love. As a mutant we are feared and hated, and although most we meet seem ok with it, going beyond professional friends is still probably off the table. On top of that, Navigator breeding is heavily controlled, and drilled into them all throughout their lives. So even with whatever contraceptives the grim darkness of the far future have, I doubt it's worth the risk.
>>
>>65245

Unfortunately, you don’t have much to offer in terms a reward. The best you can do at the current time is your thanks and a cup of recaff. “Care to stick around for a cup? I can almost guarantee it’ll be the best one you’ve ever had.”

Olympia shakes her head. “I’ll have to decline. I’m needed elsewhere at the top of the hour, and it will take me some time to traverse the decks.”

“I see. In that case, is there anything I can get you from Solace Encarmine?”

“From the world below?” she asks. “Hmm. I suppose my master would appreciate samples of the local flora. If you could bring me some that would be lovely.”

“I’ll see what I can do.”

The pair of you share a half-bow. Then Olympia departs. Shortly thereafter your recaff machine whistles to signify it’s finished brewing. You pour yourself a cup from the silver pot and take a swig. It’s just as delectable as you remember. You continue to sip at it while you stare out of your window at the planet below.

At least now you have an excuse to leave the ship and visit Solace Encarmine. Before the trip would have simply been for pleasure. You’re still a bit concerned about whether you’ll be able to conceal the fact you’re a mutant though. A hooded cowl will only do but so much. And the denizens of a Pleasure World are far less likely to even know what a Navigator is. You won’t be afforded the same level of respect and power you would have on a ship should you be found out. It might be better to simply send someone in your stead.

Your view twists as the station the Pearl’s docked with spins in its orbit. Eventually you’re gazing at nothing but open space. Oddly enough, that’s when inspiration strikes you. The other two vessels docked here, the Judgement Of Andromeda and the Retribution Heart, both Sword-class frigates, have Navigators of their own. You could request an audience with them to compare notes and charts for the journey ahead. The only sticking point is that they might not be willing to meet with you simply on principle.

It’s been awhile since you were around another one of your kind. The prospect of meeting some is both exciting and nerve-wracking. There isn’t really any protocol for such a meeting, but there are traditions. Typically they occur on the ship belonging to the House with the most influence. As you hail from a Shrouded House, it’s quite likely that that won’t be you. Unless, of course, you try and use the fact the Pearl is out of both of the Sword-class’ weight class to your advantage.

Sending a message to the other Navigators is a somewhat trivial affair. It doesn’t take you all that long to draft up a proper greeting full of the expected customs and purple prose. Once it’s ready, you send the message along via the station’s network and wait for a reply. An hour passes, then two. You’re just about ready to write it off when your data slate chimes. You’ve received two messages, one of which is much more formal than you were expecting:

”The Grand House of Benetek sees and welcomes the representative from House Girad. The request for a meeting is accepted upon the contingency that it occur aboard the Retribution Heart. If this is acceptable, reply back with the proper sigil within the hour.”

And

”I shall meet you aboard the ship of your choosing. House Aleene thanks you for including us.”

House Benetek, to the best of your knowledge, is a Magisterial House. I.e. the kind of House that actually has a palace on Terra itself. They wield ancient power and nobility, with traditions and practices millennia old. As for House Aleene, you’re pretty sure they’re a Nomadic House. They don’t have any terrestrial holdings that you know of. Instead, they preserve their line across vast fleets of ships across the Imperium. Compared to them, House Girad sits squarely in the middle. In this instance, you should technically bow your head towards the Benetek representative.

No sense in rocking the boat, as they say. You reply back to the Benetek Navigator and let him know you’ll be arriving at the predetermined time. As for the Navigator from House Aleene, you ask him to meet you a few minutes ahead of time at one of the Pearl’s airlocks. Better to arrive together than to wait for him to arrive.

As the time grows nearer, you start to get ready. A shower and a fresh set of your finest robes later and you’re ready to go. You give yourself a once-over in the mirror and tug in a few places. Then you flip up your cowl to hide your Warp Eye and stride out of your quarters. To your surprise, Yen’s rejoined her twin brother outside.

“Good to see you up and about, Yen,” you say as you head down the corridor. The twins follow in your wake.

“Where might we be going?” asks Yang.

“I have a meeting to attend to between myself and the Navigators of the other vessels that are docked here. We’ll be going through the station to the Retribution Heart. Along the way we’ll meet with another Navigator.”

“Hrm. Sounds like something we should wear dress uniforms to,” comments Yen.

“Eh, you’ll be fine. I doubt the others’ bodyguards will dress up for the occasion.”

“Still, couldn’t hurt, right?”

You suppose not. As such, you momentarily stop by Yen and Yang’s quarters before heading out of an airlock. It doesn’t take them long to get changed and once again fall-in behind you. They look rather spiffy, you must say.

When you cycle through the airlock through to the station, you find a Navigator already waiting there for you. He has hooded robes that are much like yours, and for the most part he seems like a normal person save for the Warp Eye. Then he moves to shake your hand. He does so with a fluid, sinuous grace that is entirely unnatural. Like an Eldar might.

“You must be Senka,” he says. “I am Gratus Aleene of House Aleene. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”

You push aside your preconceived notions about his mutation and shake his hand. “Likewise. It’s always nice to meet a fellow Navigator.”

Gratus withdraws his hand after a moment and hides it within the sleeves of his robes. “Shall we? I can’t imagine Benetek to be the type who tolerates tardiness.”

“Of course. What do you know about him?”

As Gratus moves to follow you, two bodyguards emerge from the shadows. On cue, so do yours. Neither of you think anything of it.

“Well the Retribution Heart only just arrived in system, a few days ahead of you. After a polite greeting I haven’t heard a single word from him. If I had to guess, he’s one of those.”

“Meaning?” you ask.

“Meaning someone who likes the prestige his House affords him. So long as you bow your head and give him the respect he thinks he deserves there won’t be any issue.”

“All that from a single greeting? You’re pretty perceptive.”

“One has to be when hailing from a Nomadic House.”

Your thoughts turn to Marneus. “Speaking of which, the Pearl is home to another of your House. Does the name ‘Marneus’ ring any bells?”

Gratus considers this for a moment, muttering to himself. “Marneus, Marneus… Is he round like a ball and profusely sweaty?”

“That’s the one,” you reply with a smile.

Gratus chuckles. “He’s my third cousin. The only reason I know him is due to that mutation of his. No one else in House Aleene is that rotund.”

“Should I arrange a meeting between the two of you?”

“No no, that’s fine. I wouldn’t have much to say to be honest. Which reminds me, what reason do you have for calling this meeting?”

“Mostly I was interested in seeing how other Navigators managed their ships,” you admit. “Plus, it doesn’t hurt to be a little social now and again.”

“I suppose you have a point,” says Gratus. “Though I never really cared much for the politicking that tends to occur at these things.”

Given how Benetek’s acted thus far he has a point. “Perhaps our host won’t stand on ceremony too much.”

“One can hope, I suppose.”

The pair of you fall silent as you scurry through the station’s passageways. Eventually you arrive at one of the many umbilicals that’s connected to the Heart. At each entrance there’s a contingent of voidsmen checking people in and out. You approach one such grouping and announce both yourself and Gratus. There’s a bit of a wait while the voidsmen confer with their superiors, but eventually you’re allowed past. A deckhand is waiting for you on the other side. He bows and motions for you to follow.

The interior of the Heart makes you appreciate the seemingly strict and sparkling decks of the Pearl all the more. Even around the airlocks, the Heart’s corridors are grungy and in various states of disrepair. It’s only when your guide leads you to the upper decks that things start to be presentable. You’re taken to what appears to be a conference room. It’s half the size of the ones you’re used to on the Pearl. It has a small buffet of food laid out, and the windows overlook the station. Your guide simply says to make yourselves comfortable while he fetches his master.

You and Gratus share a look. Then you shrug and head for the buffet. It’s nothing fancy, mostly finger foods except for the chicken kebabs. You mostly grab food for Yen and Yang, who aren’t sure whether or not it’s acceptable for them to snack. In any case, you end up waiting for a good ten minutes before the door hisses open once more.

On the other side of the portal is what can only be described as a wizened old man. His flesh hangs loosely from his bones, and he uses his staff more as a walking implement than anything else. His beard is rather impressive, grey and as long as his neck. He hobbles in, bent over, and introduces himself.

“I am Rankar Benetek. It is an honor to meet you and your house, Ms. Senka.”

“Likewise,” you say. “Thank you for taking the time to meet with me.”

“Of course, of course. You younglings should enjoy this sort of thing while it lasts. Why, I remember back when I was a young lad there was this one time…”

He launches into a story about a time when he helped crash a Nobleborn party in a Hive. You’re not sure whether it’s his storytelling abilities or his voice, but it’s supremely entertaining. Like listening to your Grandfather tell old war stories. While it’s not why you’re here, it is certainly welcome. You were expecting someone far more uptight, after all.

Rankar finishes his tale after a few minutes. Then he looks to you and asks, “So, Ms. Senka, have you yet encountered many xenos?”

You let out a laugh at his question. “What haven’t I met might be a better question. I’ve helped kill some Eldar. I’ve traded with Stryxis. Throne, I’ve even seen a Yu’vath Crystalwisp. All I’m really missing is some Orks.”

Gratus simply eyes you with wonder. Rankar chuckles in that way only an amused old man can. “That’s quite the resume. How long have you been in the Expanse?”

“Coming up on two months, I think.”

“So much in such a short time,” remarks Gratus. “Where do you find the time for it all?”

You pause and carefully phrase your next reply. You don’t want them to think you’re too weird. “We haven’t jumped but a few times. And my captain encourages accompanying him on away missions.”

“You mean to say you don’t stay in your Sanctum?” asks Gratus.

“Only when steering the Pearl through the Warp.”

Rankar smiles at that. “Better to experience what life has to offer while you’re still young and your body fit. I doubt I could even so much as make planetfall these days.”

Gratus looks between the two of you like you’re the strangest thing he’s seen to date. “But why? If something were to happen to you, your ship would be without a Navigator, and thus lost between the stars.”

“The Pearl has a backup, remember?” you remind him.

“Still, you’re running quite the risk running about like that.”

You aren’t passionate about many things, but your freedom is one of them. You try and communicate that best you can. “There are advantages not to be overlooked. Leaving my Sanctum gives me a better idea of what is going on in the greater universe, a better position when dealing with and perhaps even divvying up loot, and more trust with those in the command structure. The risks I take are risks, yes, but they are carefully calculated to be to the benefit of my house and myself. Besides, I'll be confined to my sanctum soon enough, a few decades down the line... I'll enjoy this freedom while I can, and do more of the Emperor's work while I'm at it."

Rankar taps the deck with his staff. “Well said, Senka. Better to live life to the fullest than to wonder what you’re missing.”

“I still think it’s an unnecessary gamble,” replies Gratus. “But I do see your point. We are above a Pleasure World at the moment. It’s probably one of the safest places in the Expanse. Perhaps I shall take a few days of personal time down below.”

“That’s the spirit,” says Rankar with a twinkle in his eye. “Now I hate to be an old codger, but my stamina is not what it used to be. Was there anything else you wanted to discuss?”

>>75655

“If you have the strength for it, another one of your stories might be nice.”

“Ah, but of course. Let me tell you of the time we spent half a year patrolling the Heathen Stars…”

Rankar’s tale is one that’s quite similar to your recent trip - jumps without the Astronomican’s guiding light, perils surrounding his vessel, and so on. They’re also sprinkled with skirmishes with Xenos, ranging from Orks to Rak’gol. The latter of which stand out to you simply for how terrifying the aliens sound. To go through all of that in a Sword-class frigate and come out unscathed is truly impressive. If nothing else, you’ve picked up a few things to watch out for when it comes to detecting Xenos vessels (Void Watcher power able to be at the adept level.)

“How long have you been in the Expanse, exactly?” you ask as his tale comes to an end.

“Close to a century. Though not all on the same ship. I simply went where the winds of the Warp took me.”

“That’s impressive,” comments Gratus. “I myself have been here for almost twenty years and have yet to see even half of what you and Senka seem to have.”

“Be careful what you wish for,” warns Rankar. “The Expanse has a funny way of sneaking up on you in a way you least expect.”

“I shall have to keep that in mind.”

“Thank you for your story,” you say with a reverent bow. “And for your time, Navigator Rankar.”

Rankar smiles once more and jiggles his staff. “Think nothing of it. The Heart will be in system for at least the next several weeks. Should you wish to meet again, simply say the word.”

Gratus dips his head and heads out of the conference room. You make to do the same, only to be stopped by Rankar. “A moment, if you could, Senka.”

You stop and raise an eyebrow at him. He removes a scroll case from within his robes and offers it out. “I can tell that that boy has no stomach for the unknown. But you, you seem like you’ll be able to put this to good use.”

You take the case and open it up. Inside is several charts. It’s a massive boon to receive such things, especially from a House such as his. “Are you sure?” you ask. “I’ve done nothing to deserve this.”

He waves you off. “I’m far too old to try and decipher the charts left behind by the Disciples of Thule. My family has long since forgotten about them, so they shall not be missed. At least this way they’ll seem some use.”

“You honor me,” you say with a deep bow. “I shall use them well.”

“I thought you might. Take care now, Senka.”

You try not to beam during the trip back to the Pearl. Even if the charts you just received turn out to be fake, it’s a good omen. Usually Navigators guard such things jealously. But it seems Rankar Benetek has reached the age where he stops caring about ceremony and social norms. At least to some degree, anyways.

>>76161

Back aboard the Pearl, you take a few hours in your Sanctum to give the new charts a once-over. Best you can tell, they’re charts of the Unbeholden Reaches. Only the Explorator fleet belonging to the Disciples of Thule and few others have visited the region. There’s all sorts of tales surrounding it, ranging from deserted worlds, dust-nebulae that claim the souls of damned and forsaken, to wealth beyond measure. Captain Hillbrant might be interested in traveling out that far.

Now’s a good time to handle our first “upgrade.” You can either raise one stat by 5, or you can increase the level of one of your Navigator powers. Be aware that the latter comes with the risk of mutation.

It’s high time that you visited Solace Encarmine. But before you go, you’ll need permission from the Captain. As per usual, you find him in his ready room just off of the bridge proper. He gives you a curt, “Enter,” when you knock upon his door.

“Senka, how did the meeting with the other Navigators go?”

“Better than expected,” you reply. “I’ll have something for us to debate over next officers meeting.”

Hillbrant doesn’t seem to know whether to be pleased or worried. He eventually settles on somewhere in between. “That’s… good I suppose. What brings you here now then?”

“I was hoping I could spend a few days on Solace Encarmine. I’ve never been on a Pleasure World before and thought it might be a good experience.”

“Hmm, shore leave eh? I suppose it’s alright, provided Marneus covers for you in your absence. What of your mutation though? Shall I assign additional guards to ensure your safety?”

“If it’s all the same to you, Sir, I’ll be fine with just Yen and Yang.”

Hillbrant shrugs and picks up the data slate he was working on before you came in. “So be it. Have a good trip, Senka. Stay out of trouble.”

“I will, Sir.”

You excuse yourself and head back to your quarters. Once there, you fill Yen and Yang in. “We’ll be spending a few days down on the planet. Pack lightly.”

Yen wastes no time in dashing off to pack for the both of them. As for you, you’re left wondering what’s appropriate to take. Obviously you’ll have to take at least one set of hooded robes to hide your Warp Eye. But there’s no hiding your jet black, iris-absent “normal” eyes. Well, not unless you wear a visor and/or glasses the entire time. That’s certainly an option, though you may get strange looks for it.

Let’s try a pure write in response. What will you bring?
>>
>>76752

>>

>>

Get some sort of bandana to cover our forehead. It should be more comfy than having a hood on all the time.

Could we pass off the black eyes as some sort of fashion choice? Eye tattoos are a thing, they could still be around in the grim darkness.
>>
>>76752
>You take a few pairs of spare robes, your bolt pistol, a fair amount of money, and a pair of sunglasses to ensure that your eyes aren't painfully obvious in broad daylight. If you need something else while planetside you'll buy it.
>>
>>76824
It does indeed come with a sheath. It's very fancy, as all with all weapons in Rogue Trader.

>>76828
It's not quite like Shadowrun where that sort of fashion choice is commonplace. In the grimdarkness of the 41st millennium people are more likely to think "Mutant!" whenever something's not baseline human.
>>
Running with a combination of everything listed so far. Back in a bit!
>>
>>76752

Even though it’s technically a vacation, you’re still going to bring your force sword and your bolt pistol along. You’d rather be prepared then end up in a situation without one of them. Aside from that, you’ll be bringing your robes, a bandana, and a pair of sunglasses. Along with a fair amount of Throne Gelt for the incidentals. All together you barely fill up a single backpack. Compared to Yen and Yang’s double duffle bags you feel like you packed light.

Scheduling a shuttle from the station is very easy, and the actual act of planetfall is far smoother than you expected. Once the flames of entry vanish from around the shuttle, you’re greeted with the sight of vast oceans, sandy beaches, and forests of palm trees. Thanks to your Hive World upbringing, you’ve never seen such a collection of green and blue. Your shuttle drops you off at one of the major spaceports. You’re given a frequency to vox when you’re ready to leave, then your ride heads back up to the station. That just leaves you with your bodyguards in the middle of a port. Thanks to your robes and your sunglasses, no one’s paying you any mind. Though you must say the robes are rather stuffy to be in between the sun overhead and the overall tropic temperature.

“Where to first, boss?” asks Yen. She seems eager to be here.

Finding a resort or similar willing to take you in for a few days takes precedence. You need a “base of operations” before you can relax and enjoy the many activities to be had here. The first few places you try are either full up (thanks to the three ships in orbit) or beyond your price range. Eventually, though, you come across a compound that’s right on the water. The maître d'hotel waves at you from the desk and calls to you outside.

“Looking for a place to stay? Look no further! The Triple Sierra Resort has plenty of rooms for our visitors from the stars!”

You share a look with your bodyguards, then walk inside. It seems like a nice enough place. It’s within your budget and the maître d'hotel doesn’t seem at all put off by your style of dress. You’re almost ready to pull out your wallet and purchase a room when you feel a strange tingle across your skin. Like a cool breeze is being blown across it. For some reason, the maître d'hotel frowns at the same time.

Hm. I'll see what I can do. Back in a bit!
>>

Your paranoia immediately makes you suspect the worst, that a psyker nearby is responsible for the sudden change in temperature. But then you remember that the sea breeze is a thing on this planet. Still, you ask the maître d'hotel for good measure, “Did you feel that?”

He stares past you and mouths something, then snaps back like nothing’s amiss. “Feel what, Miss?”

“...sorry. Must have been my imagination. Where were we?”

You quickly purchase a room for three days time. Yen and Yang pay for their own room next to yours. You’re given a key and pointed in the general direction of your room. Eventually you find Room 119. Inside is a fairly large bed and bathroom. Not as comfy as your quarters back on the Pearl, but still quaint. It also has a sliding door that opens up straight onto the beach. You set your things aside for the time being and slide said door open. A cool breeze rushes into your room, along with the scent of salt water.

“Man it’s been forever since I’ve gone swimming,” says Yen to your left. She’s walked out of Room 120 onto the beach, clad in what you understand to be a swimsuit. You should probably get one for yourself if you’re to truly enjoy the beach.

Now that you’re in private you can use your navigator powers without drawing undue attention to yourself. As such you take a moment to scan the immediate area for psykers and other such psychic phenomena. What you see in your Warp Eye is… alarming to say the least. It’s as if everything around you is surrounded by a low-level, psychic field, much like the trees back on Deck 23. But you’re almost positive that can’t be the case here. Someone besides you would have noticed by now if this planet held the taint of the Warp. No, there must be something or someone in the immediate area that’s confusing your Warp Eye. That or you’re growing senile.

“Is everything alright?” asks Yang as he notices you clutching your head.

“It’s fine,” you reply, hiding your Warp Eye once more beneath your cowl. “Just an unexpected vision.”

“It wasn’t of daemons or of this place burning, right?” You shake your head and Yang sighs in relief. “Good. We could do with a bit of relaxation after the last few weeks. Last thing I’d want to deal with right now is more fighting.”

You’re a little unnerved, but there’s no reason to get your bodyguards all worked up over potentially nothing. Instead you slap both of your cheeks and say, “Right. Let’s go shopping. I need to find a bathing suit.”

Yang comments, “I’ll bet that’s one of the rarest things a Navigator’s ever said. Lead on. We’ll let Yen enjoy the sun and surf.”

It’s a five minute walk from your hotel to one of the many marketplaces. There’s plenty of places for you to buy a swimsuit. It’s just a matter of taste.

Rankar’s words about enjoying your youth while it lasts comes to mind as you browse. A two piece bikini seems almost like too little fabric. But you’ve never really indulged your girlish side before now. You might as well enjoy your figure while it lasts. So you pick out a golden-throne-colored two piece and go to try it on. While you do Yang waits outside and keeps watch. The swimsuit itself is a little tight across your chest, but you’re in no danger of bursting out of it.

The more you look at yourself in the mirror, the more you realize how slightly silly you look. What other Navigator would fret over how she looks in a bikini? You let out a laugh, to which Yang asks, “Everything alright in there?”

“Yes yes, I’m fine. Do me a favor and grab me a hat and a wrap, would you?”

“On it.”

He scurries off to find the requisite items. In the meantime, you use the privacy of the changing booth to your advantage. You carefully peek out at your surroundings with your Warp Eye just to be sure your earlier glance was a fluke. Sure enough, everything is normal.

Yang returns a few minutes later with a large sunhat and a wrap for your thighs. The former conceals your Warp Eye well if worn at the proper angle, and the latter makes you less self-conscious about your legs. Combined with your sunglasses you look like the average sunbather, if not a tad more pale.

“Well, how do I look?” you ask as you step out of the booth.

Yang gives you a once over, then grunts, “You look fine to me.”

“I think you’re supposed to say something flattering there, Yang.”

“Am I? Oh well. Ready to get back to the resort?”

You try not to pout that Yang’s having none of your nonsense. Then again, as your bodyguard, it’s his cool, professional detachment that makes him so good. In any case, you pay for your items and head back towards your hotel. Now that you’re out of your stuffy robes, the sun overhead and sea breeze both feel heavenly. It’s not quite like the sensation you feel in your Sanctum when the Pearl is bathed in a sun’s rays, but it’s pretty close.

By the time you make it back to your room, Yen’s constructed a sandcastle about the size of a las cannon. She waves at you and her twin brother, then returns to her work.

You’ve never really used sand as a medium before. But it can’t be all that hard, right?

You move to join Yen and help her make the sandcastle even bigger. She sets you shoring up the right flank as she constructs the battlements. Your progress is slow at first as you struggle with the proper sand to water ratio. Eventually you find a happy medium. You’re not nearly as skilled as Yen appears to be, but your side is at least presentable.

“There,” Yen says as she steps back. “All done.”

You follow suit. Together you were able to make a castle about the size of a small grox, complete with the Imperial aquila above the main door. By now the sun’s begun its descent to the horizon.

“We should probably think about dinner,” you say. “Or at least something that will make Yang less bored.”

The entire time you worked, Yang watched impassively from a chair in the shade. It seems he and Yen are taking turns on watch rather than give up their bodyguard duties entirely.

After weighing your options, you decide, “Let’s eat here at the resort. That way we don’t have far to go back to our rooms after.”

“Works for me!” exclaims Yen.

“And me,” murmurs Yang.

The three of you head back into the hotel and towards the lobby. Off from that is a short hallway to a restaurant. Inside is dark and moody, with views featuring the beachfront outside. It all seems to be going well when you feel that strange breeze once more. You look around for the source, finding no open windows or fans nearby. Odd…

“Good evening,” says the waiter as he slides up to your table. “What can I get you?”

You place your beverage order, then excuse yourself from the table. You head towards the restroom where you can safely use your Warp Eye without getting caught. Once safely inside a stall, you take a look around. This time everything looks normal, except one person in particular. It seems that the waiter himself possesses some psychic potential. You’re not 100% sure, but you don’t think sanctioned psykers wait tables...

You’re a Navigator. Dealing with unsanctioned psykers is not in your department. Nor are you at all comfortable with going to this planet’s Arbites directly. They’d simply ask far too many questions, if not jail you on the spot for being a mutant. So instead you opt to vox up to the Pearl. Doing so requires you to sneak back to your room. You get two “rings,” then Ruhr picks up.

“Senka? Everything alright down there?” he asks.

“Not exactly. There’s an unsanctioned psyker down here in one of the resorts. You should alert the local authorities and let them know I’m staying here so I’m not picked up in their sweep.”

“Sure, I can do that. Anything more specific on the witch?”

“He’s a waiter in the Triple Sierra resort. Has a sort of breeze about him at all times. The manager of the hotel might be in on it as well now that I think about it.”

Ruhr mumbles back your words as you assume he writes all of this down. “Right. Got all of that. I’d recommend staying in your room or finding another place to stay. Who knows how the Arbites will react.”

“I’ll do just that. Thanks, Ruhr.”

The vox goes quiet. You tap at the microbead in your ear and let your bodyguards know they should get the food to go. When asked why, you tell them…

Tell them you're feeling puckish if they ask why, then explain once you're elsewhere.

I don't want to be here when the Arbites show up, just in case they get overzealous in their sweep.

...that you’ll need to find a new place to stay the night. The reason behind which you’ll explain once you’re safely away from here. They must pick up on your sense of urgency, for they end up returning within minutes without food in hand. The three of you hastily pack, then leave the resort via beach so as not to look suspicious to the maître d'hotel.

Once you’re out of sight of the place, you turn around and say, “Turns out that waiter was a witch. I didn’t want us to be around when the Arbites showed up.”

Yen and Yang share a look. “That’s good thinking,” says Yang. “We technically have no jurisdiction here if they got overzealous and wanted to take you in for questioning. Whereas on the Pearl we have license to kill if need be.”

“It’s a shame you didn’t notice sooner though,” comments Yen. “Now we’ll have to order in something once we find a new place.”

You shrug and keep walking. It takes you a good half hour to find a new resort. It’s situated on the other side of the crescent beach from the original. This time, before you pay for a room, you give it a wide sweep with your Warp Eye. Once everything checks out clean, you happily hand over your throne gelt. Your new room is about the same as the old, if not a little more cramped.

Dinner ends up being ordered-in pizza. It arrives just about when a loud siren erupts from across the bay. As you chow down, you’re treated to the sight of the Triple Sierra Resort being raided by a zealous group of Arbites. It’s not quite the end of a perfect day, but it’ll do.

That's about all I have for this week. Thanks for playing. Next week I'm moving so my schedule's a mess. It might be Wednesday again, or it could be Friday. Watch Twitter I guess.
