The station is packed with hundreds of young men, waiting for the same train. As the train pulls in your mother gets all teary eyed and gives you a big hug, Dad smiles and shakes your hand.

"Good luck son, I know you will make us proud."

"Please write us!" your mother says.

You smile, "Miss you two already."

The train is already packed, as you walk past all the taken seats you notice three are open. You take a quick note of they are next to.

You put your suitcase in the compartment above, when you look down the bald man reaches out for a hand shake.

"Michael Elmore" he says with a bright smile.
You introduce yourself and take a seat.

"My Father is a Military veteran. Ever since I was young I wanted to be just like him. Soon as I turned 18 I enlisted. Adventure, decent pay and a chance to see the world."

"Very noble of you. What MOS did you enroll in?"

"12 Mike, the militaries new mech division."

Elmore smiles, "That's great, that was my choice as well. Perhaps we can keep an eye out for one another? It's nice to have someone watching your back."

I hope more show too. It's all good if you run the show though. And I'm assuming you meant to ask Elmore his story?

Already feeling a bit home sick and nervous, you decide that having a friend would be in your best interest. Elmore also made a great first impression.

"Yeah, that sounds great"

Elmore sounds relieved, "Oh, that's swell!"

"What made you enlist?"

"It's a rather sad story, I will give you the short version. My mother passed away, leaving me and my siblings alone. Being the oldest I had to take care of them. Neighbors are watching them right now, and when I graduate basic training I will move them on base with me."

He's not strong, and he didn't do well in school. In the back of your mind you wonder if you made a mistake aligning yourself with Elmore.

You and Elmore get more familiar with one another as the trip progresses. He is seems like a really decent guy and are sure you will end up being great friends. You still can't help but worry he may cause you problems with the Drill Sergeants.

The train reaches it's destination, as it pulls in you notice a line of buses waiting for your arrival.

He may not be the strongest, fastest or had the best grades, but every military recruit has the potential to be someone great. You feel a bit of guilt and shake it off.

You give Elmore a smile, "Yeah good idea."

The two of you get the last seat on a bus and give each other a nod. You can't help but feel anxious and excited. When you get off this bus it will be the real deal. Six weeks of basic training, after that you will be trained in the Mech division for another six. The bus is loud, people whispering to one another but begin to start talking over one another.

A large man enters the bus in military uniform.

"SHUT YOUR MOUTH'S"

Everyone quickly goes silent.

"I better not hear a god damn peep out of any of you! If I have to turn around and say anything while I am driving, I will pull the bus over and fuck you up."

You know better and keep your mouth shut. Your father let you know to never back talk or question a Drill Sergeant.

"Yeah I have a question, are you always this way, or are you just upset you and your boyfriend are fighting?"

All heads turn in horror to see who was stupid enough to say something like that.

The Drill Sergeant slowly walks to the back of the bus to confront the deadman. Drill Sergeant
towers over the young man.

"What's your name son?"

Deadman didn't seem realize how big this man was until he reached him.

"Lance McKee"

"Private Mckee, you seem like a real bad-ass, and a natural born leader. I bet you are also real popular with the ladies aren't you son?"

"Uh, yeah, of course!"

"Private Mckee, the army is truly blessed to have a man such as yourself to be joining our ranks. Since you had the balls to question me, you can have some of this chew, would you like some?

Oh god don't do it

"Mckee looks smug and looks at the faces on the bus for approval,

"Yeah sure, thanks guy."

"Open your mouth."

Mckee looks confused.

"Open. Your. Fucking. Mouth."

Oh my god

Mckee opens his mouth and the Drill Sergeants spits all of his chew into it. Mckee's face, mouth and parts of his shirt are covered in it.

"This is not your fucking army! You only speak when told to do so, I'm not your friend, you do not call me buddy, friend or guy, you little fucking shit. All the Drill Sergeants will know your name, your face and by the time this is all over, you will wish you were fucking dead!"

The rest of ride is in complete silence.

When the bus makes it to base Drill Sergeant driver yells to get the hell out of his bus, people try to claw past one another to get off. You and Elmore are first off and are greeted right away by more Drill Sergeants, suitcases open, dump everything out.

Your father told you to pack light and you did. You get yelled at for no particular reason.
Elmore dumps his suit case, a single pair of shirt pants and socks fall out.
He gets yelled at for be poor and lazy and accused of only joining for money.

You are moved to a large staging area and ordered to strip, all of your possessions are taken from you. You stand in line with hundreds of naked men waiting to get your gear.

You are about average size, and the running you have been doing helps with your figure and balance. You get 5 pairs of uniforms, socks, underwear and boots. You are charged Twenty-four dollars for everything, two dollars more than what you make in a month. You are ordered to put underwear and socks on.

You go through the rest of processing, physical, you get countless shots, including one in your butt. Ouch. You are told to put on a uniform and herded along with the other to a track. You wait for one of the Drill Sergeants to call you name and join his platoon. Drill Sergeant Crumb calls your name and you hurry over to him and told to stand in formation with the rest. Elmore is also assigned to your platoon. He seems very please by this. After everyone has been sorted out you are moved to your platoon Barracks. You and Elmore bunk together. He calls top before you can say anything and gets his locker situated.

Drill Sergeant Crumb calls everyone together and tells this weeks. He informs you that you will have classes on military tactics, after that you will have a 10 mile ruck march and an obstacle course.

It's better not to chance it. Most importantly, it wouldn't kill you to get some strength training.
You finish the 10 miles, you aren't tired but your shoulders are killing you, it feels like they are on fire. The obstacle course is next, you have lots of energy but not confident in lifting and pulling yourself through it. Drill Sergeant Crumb tells everyone to make teams of 5. He tells everyone the team that is the fastest to complete the course will receive a prize. Everyone begins talking amongst themselves. You already know that the strong will try to join and weed out the weak.

Elmore attempts to pair himself with you. You don't mind, but you know that it will discourage the strongest people in the platoon to shun you.

There are 10 obstacles, the first 5 are team based. Your team blazes through the first 5.

The last 5 are individual. There is a-

"We got this!", he yells

Stone, Bailey and Whitebuffalo stare in disbelief. Stone lets out a deep, hearty laugh,

You all join the campfire, there was no way the five of you could have eaten everything. The group says thanks and retreats to their camp after they eat. Elmore begins to laugh.

Mckee looks annoyed, "Hey guy, what's so funny?"

"You beat the shit out of them and they thanked us!"

Everyone erupts in laughter and for a moment you aren't all home sick.

The class is a decent size, most of the recruits enjoyed their free time and relaxed. You are given a training manual and a group to work with and a vehicle. A mechanic tell you all to find out whats wrong with and fix it. See ya in an hour.

"Start it up."

The engine sounds much better, I think we got it.

The mechanic seems very impressed. He is soon displeased to learn that only 1 of you is becoming an army mechanic. He takes his leave.

You and the other that helped shake hands and smile. You learn his name, Rodger Pinkerton.

A fusion of C, and D since strength doesn't seem to be an advantage in this situation unless we get into close combat. Having the other ones would let us be able to ambush them, and fire from a distance, plus set up traps.

You let Elmore join, he isn't exceptional in any area but he is a well rounded recruit, you two work well together too.

With the two of you, still need 8 more.

You will probably out in the elements by yourselves, who knows how long a mission will run. Finding recruits who did well in survival training my be a good idea. You also hear that you will be given rifles with simulation rounds. Going to need solid marks men. Fill the rest of the slots with decent recruits that are left over.

Maybe we can find another way?

You feel like you are missing something obvious, but can't find anything that stands out on the map.

The Villiage is east almost 8 miles. If you take the squad north east it will be dense trees and mountains. If you go straight east its miles of woods. Nice concealment and the straightest course. If you go try cutting south then east the woods begin to clear and you will reach open fields. You can move quickly but if there is an unknown element the higher up throw at you, you will be exposed.

The village is circled by trees, except directly north. There are cliff that would give you a look out point. You could possible make your way down directly in.

The Evac point is two miles east of the village, through the woods into a clearing where you he will be taken from your care.

North east is going to be rough to through, but you feel confident your squad can do it. Your Squad is given ammo out the back of a truck.

Your time begins. 12 hours until mission failure.

You quickly pull out the map and give your squad the info. North East, we will have a couple miles of woods, then we hit a mix of those and mountains and hills. As you say it, you feel annoyed and frustrated.

You see some rank and pick out the highest grade, a corporal.

"That's a bad hand you've got there. I'd reckon you'd best fold."

All 4 turn and look, the look of complete horror covers their faces.

"Hands up where I can see them, no sudden movements or we will have to shoot you, don't want that do we?

You and the others stand. The Corporal speaks,

"You guys are dead meat, dead you hear!"

>A. Shoot him

>B. "Don't you know it's illegal to gamble in uniform?"

>C. Order one of your men to take all of their ammo

Don't see that these are mutually exclusive. Save the shooting for when they actually start getting rowdy. We need the Corporal up in case we need to interrogate him, since he's likely to know the most out of them.

You make eye contact with Gilliam and motion with your head to the weapons.

"Don't you know it's illegal to gamble in uniform? Shame on your Corporal."

The radio makes noise

"This is Alpha one, give us a status report Alpha two, over.

Gilliam throws a surplus of ammo he took out of the jeep. He points his weapon at the Corporals balls. You put yours to the back of his head.

"Alpha one, this is Alpha two, we are all green."

"Good copy Alpha two, Alpha one out."

"How frequent are radio check Corporal?"

"Every hour."

You and the others push the men up to the fence, and fire single shots into them. You can tell it really hurts.

"You, dirty sons of bitches!"

You tell them you will be taking the jeep and their radio. The rest of the squad runs over to join you.

"A bit much isn't?", Elmore asks.

Shooting unarmed prisoners isn't very honorable, but damn it, you play for keeps.
You get the radios codes and frequency's. You are now able to hear and respond to Alpha one.

I'll be taking a break. I will try to be back shortly so we can finish the mission.
>>

thats cool. you mentioned going through the decades up to the 60s wouldn't our character be well into his 30s, almost 40s by then?
Whats the plan, are we going to be promoted and eventually be in command of a division of mechs?
Just wondering what kind of quest this will be.
>>
>>615754
I can see us having our own mech, then maybe moving up to Lance Commander, i see our character staying on a combat position rather than a command/deskjobber one
>>
>>615754
>>615775

Yeah, Grant would be old for a soldier. Hope you guys don't lead him into an early retirement.
If it gets to that you can create a new soldier or pass the torch on to another character.

You let the other have their fun, you joke around a little too. Elmore is driving, and tell everyone that he thinks he see's the end.

Ah, that is good.
We all have our off days.

You turn off the jeep and push it the rest of the way, it's no problem for ten of you. You reach the end of the tunnel and notice 3 jeeps right away, parked in a semi-circle. You hear the radio playing. You smell something cooking... BBQ! You drool a little bit.

Stay focused.

You notice 3 little buildings right passed the jeeps. You can't see anybody, but you do hear them.

I don't think they are expecting us for another several hours. You have made so much ground in little time. We might just get the drop on them.

Fine, do you think we can get the keys without anyone noticing? Or take on all the people they fit into those jeeps to get them if we can't? Or that nine people will slow it down enough that they can keep up on foot?

One, we're trained in mechanics. One of us can hotwire the car. Two, we just need one more jeep. And these jeeps are clearly in a motor pool. Motor pool have a key board somewhere.

Hot wiring a car is actually pretty easy- if you have the right tools. I doubt we do.

You tell Freeman to go check the area for Standley, keep a low profile. He makes it to a jeep and looks around, he looks surprised grabs something from the vehicle, he goes to the other two and does the same thing. He comes back to you and drops 3 sets of keys into your hand.

Well then.

Freeman takes off.

We can use the jeeps if we need to at least.

Make roll for Freeman.

Freeman returns, a little out of breath. He takes a knee and begins drawing a layout of the area in the dirt. He says these guys have their weapons near them, so if we ambush they may be able to fire back. He marks them on his little map. He circles one of the buildings. Standley is in here, he's reading a book.

Trying to kill time I guess.

Freeman says there is a window in that building you could use to sneak in, it doesn't connect to Standley's room.
