So guy's I'm in a hospital waiting room with three hours to kill. I'm alright just a family member I care for had something happen and docs are finding out what right now. Let's have fun to take my mind off it, eh?

You inhale sharply, looking out the path you've travelled. Noting the huge full moon in the sky behind Captain Remy.

You exhale and let your saw unspool until it rests on the canvas. You sink down next to it, crossing your legs opposite Matthieu. "Fine. You're right we have a lot to talk about."

"And only a scant few hours to talk in." He finishes with ice on his tongue.

"So let's talk." You say, a second saw materializes at your side. You note the widening of Remy's pupils in shock, he hides it artfully. But it was there for a moment. "Let's start with the rebellion. How did it start and when?"

He takes a moment to collect himself. Then he talks. "The Republic is actively supressing and eliminating those who would speak out against us, raise the issue of corruption, nepotism or anything of it's ilk. Quite frankly, many councilmen are just becoming tyrants and using the "Dissenter" label to kill those they want to." His face is grim.

"Master walked away after a particular incident I was complicit in. I intended to imprison the dissenters only to find a councilman had superceded my order and begun a massacre." You notice his hand shake in his meditative pose, "One which I had to finish. Fortunatly I had opportunity to kill the councilman who gave the order - but that does not clean the blood on my hands." His eyes lock with yours, "I still defend the Republic with all my might. I run Grinnsmon as best I can from my posiiton at court in the capital - make sure it's taxes reach the treasury and follow the Senator's orders to the letter. But Grinnsmon has never encountered a rogue Starborn. Until now."

"So what will you do." You respond with all the ice of his gaze.

"Master has called in a favour. This favour has bought my silence on your existense." He smiles widely, looking like the man you met this pre-vening. "So we can be friends Purps. Unless you feel I am too much of a threat and must be silenced, in which case we can settle our dispute tonight."

"Or?"

"We keep our good relationship, be friends and hope the Senator doesn't order me to take you in. However I have come up with a good cover so you don't attract any captains' attention while in the academy."

"So what is your plan?" You deadpan.

"You need an excuse to be in the academy for a length of time. You and your friend both. So I can pull some strings to get you in, just like I did Luc and..."

"Now you want to pay for my education Captain? Something is not right there." You grimace, an expression that makes your mouth ache from unfamiliarity.

"You have no memories, but are tremendously powerful. Forget my reasoning or motives for a moment - which I assure you are pure." He tips an invisible hat as he compliments your strength, "You can study magic, combat or even history and religion at the academy. It behooves me to improve the protection around my Master." He smirks, clearly finished speaking for now.

"If I'm so strong why did you rush back to Grinnsmon? Also; how did you even make it so quick?" You demand

"An enigma only has power when it is a secret." He replies, deadpan. "But master has an expression that will do for now; Starborn are bullshit. He laughs a little that icy mask cracking bit by bit as he relaxes again. "Would you rather I continue to explain why you might want to kill me or have we bonded enough that you trust me a little?"

You take out a cigarette, popping it into your mouth as you sit meditative style. You realize you've only lit up using Lex's spell. You begin patting yourself down when something is thrown at you. You catch the small box, hearing it rattle.

Matches nice.

"So I guess I should talk about the rebels. He says as you exhale above both of your heads, "Well as of right now their influence is over the Cadalonian Tribelands and the rest of the Southern region. Grinnsmon being no exception. It's why there are so many garrisons here." He scratches his neck, a habit both he and you seem to have picked up from Lex, "Problem is, rebels dont exactly fly flags. So they can realistically set up bases anywhere just by travelling there. In terms of out and out warfare though; they're stronger down here despite hardliners like the captains of Harlindon and Koll."

"But despite being a loyalist, you let sympathisers in your town." You note.

"I am normally at court. But even were I in Grinnsmon full time, not much would change. The Rebel aligned in the town have been happy to protest peacefully, enough for me to turn a blind eye. Whereas the ones you rounded were doing blatantly illegal and immoral things to actively aid the rebels." He leans forward. "I have not been directly ordered to stamp out or arrest dissidents in my territory so I have not."

" So who leads the rebels?" You ask, wanting to know who will be coming for you.

"Well the out and out leader is the only person to fight the senator and live. Lancel Corcra . Former Commander in Chief of Munisian armed forces; [The Dragon of Dreams.]" He sighs and looks up at the half moon, "The man is the reason the republic stands. He's old enough to remember the time of nobles. It wouldn't surprise me if he fought for the Senator when he was just another Starborn."

"This whole thing is at the whim of one man?" You snort, "Colour me unimpressed, a good sniper and his rebellion ends."

He laughs, "You'd think so. But a strategic genius with exceptional warriors and commanders surrounding him who can inspire fanatical loyalty in his men."

"Other commanders? You raise an eyebrow as he gazes longilgy at the moon the same way a drowning man would gaze at the shore.

"Yes. The whole of the surviving Cadelonian front dropped banners and picked up his. 30,000 veterans. Including officers and starborn commanders. When they struck we were lucky to survive at all... though we took losses."

He looks distraught at this topic. "If I had to pick his right hand? I'd probably give it to Lorelai. She fights with the bastard child of a lance and a cannon. She held the walls of Harlindon for a month during the Cadalon War." He draws a map in the air with his fingers, "The Western front was retreating to the Bassilisk bridge where they would eventually break the oncoming tribes and to the east Grinnsmon had been all but left empty. Harlindon was encircled and sieged by the self styled Puma Prince's Elites while the war raged." he scrathes his chin thoughtfully "Had she not held and the Tribesmen established a cohesive line - the capital might have been under threat. The turning point at Bassilisk bridge could not have happened had Lorelai not tied up Puma's elites."

He spits off the side, "Too stubborn to die. Even now I know she managed to survive two seperate encounters against [The Warrior]" He seems to be mostly talking to himself now.

"So why have they allied with these cult of Darna people. Your stomach itches as you think of the sick bastard that wanted to eat his way through Grinnsmon. "A cult of cannibal mortal supremacists who hate starborn? Not exactly idealogically aligned with your War Hero turned against a broken system."

"That is the King of Questions isn't it? Until this attack in Grinnsmon, the cult seemed to be trying to lay low and gain power through thralling strong fighters. He lays back on the wagon roof, unable to reach his sword if you attacked. "We were fools to think that them focusing on Loyalist areas just meant they were the strongest targets they felt confident taking on, [THE DIPLOMAT] said we should look into the Cult more and perhaps send an assasin to cull them... but it's far too late for the viper's kiss now." The two of you rise and leap to the dusty ground as one, kciking up paired little tufts of grit and dirt. As you both land something occurs to you, "One last thing." He turns, no ice in his gaze just tiredness. "Who is Luc really."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5LhT85HAr4

The temperature drops by an impossible amunt and for the first time Matthieu has his hands on his sword. "A very personal question. Why would you ask it?"

You can't help but shrug even as your hand goes to your righternmost buzzsaw. "I'm curious. But more importantly, I care about him."

He seems somewhat soothed by your honesty. "The massacre I mentioned. Came around becausee one vocal area of Bennorack. They were on the verge of revolt and The Senator wanted seven people silenced." He can't meet your eyes, "My naivety made me speak up in court. I believed I could handle it without need for the vipers. The Senator made me put my money where my mouth is. I planned to discreetly make my way there with trusted men watching my back. Put it to them simply, surrender to me or the Republic will be forced to take them in chains."

"But..." you supply.

"A councilman mobilized all the guard and military his money could reach. Which was a lot. The district fortified up as soon as they gathered and it was then we found out..." His fists are clenched. "My partner. Captain Maddison, had taken it upon herself to side with the dissenters. We had argued many a time about issues... butI never.."

"Anyway. The battle begun whilst I was still attending to duties. By the time I deployed - it was a bloodbath." His eyes are firmly planted between his feet, the big imposing man replaced by a husk of his illuminating presence. "One street gave them particular trouble. Maddison was there, bodies were piled high when I arrived."

"Maddison had the children and her best behind her. The Councilman ordered the men to torture prisoners, I arrived in time to put three out of their misery. In my fury I lopped off the councilman's head on arrival. A casualty of Maddison officially."

He looks at you. "I took command and ordered the barricades stormed. The operation was so fucked that it had to end ASAP. I faced Maddison. I faced the woman I loved for my duty to a Republic infested with the types of monster it originally sought to eradicate."

Even you are put off by the picture presented; a bloodied and betrayed husband arriving to battle his defiant and honourable wife. An idealogical rift preyed upon by a political schemer. Two warriors of increidble power who loved each other fighting to the end...

"Have you ever made someone die Purps? No, don't misunderstand. I'm not talking a quick thrust, decapitation or deadly blow. She was tired when she made her last stand, wounded too. I was superior in magic, quicker and my weapon favoured the environment. Yet she stood." (CONT)

"She stood after I took her leg. SHe still tried to fight." He's crying now and shaking, "The battle was lost but she stood against me. She fought with one eye, then one arm, she pulled out a dagger since her halberd was too heavy. She tood and fought to the last." He looks at his sword in disgust, "I moved to take her alive when I thought she had passed out. She lunged at me with that knife, even whil the rest of her followers had been put ot the sword, even with 300 of my best standing around us watching she stood and fought, past the point her body was shutting down. He looks as if he's reliving this. You don't know if he even know's your still here. "She threw herself onto my sword. Impaled herself to try and stab me through the eye. My partner, my sweetheart. She stood when nobody else would and I cut her down. I made her die, it wa sno killing, no victory. I made her die because she stood and fought."

He drops the sword with a clang, "We found two boys, one with a sword waving at my men. The other... had Maddison's blue eyes. He was 6 then. I had been with Maddison for 2 years. He was powerful, moreso than the 10 year old protecting him. So I offered to adopt them both. The older one refused but somehow escaped on way to prison, but Luc..." He goes back inside unceremoniously. Probably to go hold his sleeping son.

You brush off your travelling clothes and finish your cigarette, looking for some time to digest the scars of a man at the heart of the Reublic, well shit, looks like he has issues with "supressing" rebels after that.

You exhale a cloud of smoke, giving him plenty of time before grabbing his claymore and heading inside to find a comfy spot to sleep.

Uh, I'd say one of the first two. The third is not likely to come online.
[CURIOSITY] pitches our shitty dice rolls against you, though there doesn't seem to be much loss from failure. Success give us a name. It'll be upgradeable for more info, I'm sure, else randomly knowing the name for one of the numerous abilities an enemy has is of no help.

I like the idea of a new form, but it'd have to be quite different for it to be worthwhile. It's likely to be more defensive than the other two forms. So one mid-range AoE-like sweeper, one closeup assault and then one defensive (or ranged)

>>

When you outstrength someone it will be useful. Also harder to dodge than you saws if you get locked into a stand up brawl.

Matthieu and Remy are two separate personalites. One, under a mask of cheerfulness, is a cold, brutally pragmatic and single-mindedly loyal machine of war (and accountancy/court politics). The other is that of a broken man, desperately clinging to what reminisces him of his Loved One. He is entangled by his past sins and what he feels to be neglect of his morality. Those are the two faces expressed in our company, there is more to come

>>599613
>outstrength
Once you are overwhelming someone, I don't think there's a reason at that point to switch form/tactic. I may wrongly interpret what you mean by that.

>stand up brawl
A brawl invokes close quarters and maneuvrability, which the claws provide in spades.
A hafted weapon tends to be used at a greater reach for maximum potential. Purp's agility would help overcome a weaker play at close range (swiping in close circles, hands around the shaft's center and using the butt of the polearm, etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjlpKr7tl80)

Points that I think are worth mentioning:

>Sundering:
Shatter weapon, armor, misc. equipment and obstacles. True to [DETERMINATION], trample through the enemy's defenses, make what they use inoperative or a direct hindrance (spray shards of wood/gusts of sand towards them, bent/shredded parts of armor prevent full mobility and worsens wounds)

>Pressure:
A polearm causes psychological and physical pressure to an enemy, who must defend against the quick lunges and swipes of a weapon with a reach advantage.

>Diversity of mobility:
A pole increases flexibility in a different way than wires, which tend to require attachement points. Add Purp's enigma and it gears up to the upper level.

>Possible uses: hitting a surface with the revved-up saw for a quick boost of speed or a bounce for an unexpected angle of attack.

In the end, it's our own functional Glaive-Glaive-Glaive-Guisarme-Glaive Saw!

Ending prose
>You should not wait to be attacked, but instead attempt to gain and hold the initiative so that your enemy needs to react to you and cannot form a strategy of attack. If your enemy has the initiative, work to take it from them.

The Whirligig Saw is what we need
>>
>>600190

This is fantastic and explains what I meant better than I probably ever could; just clarity on some things.

> Outstrength;
Literally means just when you are stronger than someone. If the enemy is AGI focused like Hona - this weapon would give them trouble as Purps is quick enough to read them AND this thing will overwhlem them quickly if she gets the pressure on.

> Stand up brawl

In my mind is a situation where neither Purps or her opponent can dodge well and have to just trade blows and blocks and parries if that makes sense.

But yeah should continue at some point today, Watch this space.
>>
>>599412

You take longer than usual to drift off to sleep. Oddly you find that you cant stop thinking about Captain Remy's burdens. You wonder why. Did you perhaps have to "make someone die" that you loved? Did his description of the battle maybe remind you of some forgotten struggle?

Your lack of memory creates a lack of answers, which creates a lack of certainty. This bothers you. But you don't know why.

Your eyes eventually close while you wonder why Maddison did what she did.

You look at the cracked gravestone and a cemetary forms around you. impossibly vast and impossibly dark.

You go for a walk amidst the gravestones. Each one cracked and splintered as if an angry god has struck them. The night is dark and cold, the mist and blackness curling around you to rob you of sight. Your hands exist on another plane from your eyes, your body is gone to your sight. But the gravestones are visible no matter the distance. The names and details of countless men & women burning themselves into your eyes and memory forever.

Your sense tell you you are not alone, the path leads upwards to a mausoleum upon a hill. Rusted metal fences lying discarded and warped on the way upwards. To your left is a beautiful beach of blue sand, hauntingly pictureseque.

You begin the trudge up the hill, the walk seeming to add weight to your shoulders with every step. It goes from an uphill walk, to a slog to a titanic effort for each step. The names on the graves continue to bombard you, but one causes you to stop.

A woman appears from blue smoke, a baby suckling at her breast. She smiles at you from a shattered jaw. She waves at you with a left arm that is gone from the elbow down. He abdomen is a mess of ragged cuts... you look to the baby and see the back of it's head exposed. As it suckles you can't take your horrified eyes off the mess of brain, bone and spattered grey matter.

Magda and Harry North. Dead on the same day and buried together.

You'd like to forget the shades you just saw.

You continue, beginning to sweat from exertion as you climb the hill. Graves are overturned here, the dark blue grass being replaced by pavement. pavement with more names, dates, more graves. The hill is a hill of graves and the mausoleum on top.

You stop and see a young man, spear stabbed into the ground beside him. A bagpack, cape, pieces of armour are scattered around carelessly. He weeps, the mausoleum is encades in chains; thick black twisted chains that crack the very stone they encase.

You walk up to the man and stand beside him, careful to avoid his armour. You look at the mausoleum, "What happened?"

He is silent for a long time. Sobbing nonwithstanding. "They're all dead."

"Who?

"All of them.

Ok then. You look at the mausoleum and it's chains as you ponder your next move.

"Who are you?" You ask while the wind starts to pick up. You snatch at your cloak and find yourself in a military outfit, similar to the one Hona wore as a guard but instead white with blue accent.

The man looks at you sadly, "You'll die too." He says, "I'm [THE SURVIVOR] , [THE SCHOLAR], [THE HUMBLE GRIFFON] [VERNON THE SAGE]. But I'm just a teacher who's pupils keep dying." He resumes his vigil on the mausoleum. You look back down towards the graves and notice they're gradually being replaced by mountains. Silently rising in muted landslides. The graves tumbling down cliffs that rise from the ground.

He too looks back, as though this is nothing new to him. THe blue tinted night is replaced by a warm morning glow as two suns begin casting their light on the mountain ranges. There is no mausoleum behind you now.

"I am [THE PURPLE FIREFLY] I cannot die even when killed." You responde calmly and find the man turning away from the scenic canyons to face you. He looks suitably suspicious. You also notice his face starting to age slightly; as opposed to the man in his young 20s - he now looks closer to mid 30s.

"I've met many "invincible warriors." "Immortal wizards" and their ilk. " He goes over to his bagpack and picks it up. You begin collecting his scattered belongings to aid him, "I've taguht them one thing. Time and death wait for nobody. It's a lesson of personal expertise."

You pick up his spear and give it a twirl, noting the runes etched along it's shaft and unique positioning of the leather grips. "So what I'm saying child, is that time has stolen all my loved ones. That immortality is cursed. [THE SURVIVOR] was intended as a cruel joke by someone who despised me, despite my teachings." He finds a flask from his pack and downs some water, "I've learned not to care. I've quit teaching. I wander now. I'm no longer a soldier of Ghenris. I'm alone so that I never have to see anyone suffer the ravages of time."

You ponder on this, walking to the cliff face and sitting. Kicking your legs over the side as if it were a pond beneath you instead of an impossible drop. "I think you're wrong. I think you need to be the pupil instead of the master for once." He joins you, the two of you sitting together. It feels nostalgic sitting next to this man who is aging as you speak, "I've been told Starborn are Bullshit." He laughs "But what you're going through now? Looking back on your life and seeing what is lost. I wish for it. I yearn for it. I am [JEALOUS] of you in so many ways." You sigh and feel an inscrutiable gaze of [THE SCHOLAR] on you, studying you in wonder, "I am over 500 years old.Yet I have a memory of four days."

You meet his gaze his eyes glowing as his enigma analyses you, "I am slowly regaining my emotions. So you wanting to forget everything so you won't mourn is bullshit. You should celebrate living so long, celebrate the romances and bonds you've shared no matter how brief from your perspective."

Your mind flashes to Honamurei, "No matter how brief people are in our immortal lives, to them it's more.We could be their only friend, love of their life, sister, mother, father, rival. It does not matter. What matters [VERNON THE SAGE] is that we remember them and cherish every moment with them." You rise dusting yourself off. He looks at you and you begin to see familiar features, "Even if I cannot yet honour my words. You have no excuse.

You're a scholar-documentation and history has power."
The world starts to fade around you again as you walk up to the mausoleum, you lay a hand on the stone and find it ice cold. "Let your memory kindle the fires of passion. Lest your heart grow icy and guarded. Despair not the lost."

Minerva's fire burns in your hand. The locks melt away as your body loses cohesion. You smile in pride as you wake up with a start. Hugging yourself in the corner of the cabin wagon's common room.

"Are you okay?" You hear Luc ask someone outside.

"I'm fine kid. Just tell me how the Ghenrisian schism of faith effected the Munisian invasion." You hear Lex say, with a tremor in his voice.

That was a nice esoteric pause from the more physical problems Purps tends to encounters.

So a Starborn's longevity brings the same problems as the rare long-lived races in fantasy, moreso as they tend to be a random and quite rare occurence.
