You are Kusajishi Riku, current Captain of the Ninth Division of the Seireitei Court Guard, and you understand what's going on here better than either of the two bickering teens give you credit for. You've been there once or twice, and it's the understanding that you have literally decades to sort out your problems that helps you approach them with more patience and understanding. After all, that long view also means you realize a mistake may be something you regret for centuries.

Ichigo and Tatsuki don't have that luxury. Realistically, Tatsuki only has until the end of the day to decide whether she wants to let you turn her into a shinigami like Ichigo is, or whether the risk to her life is simply too great.

“I get that you care about people, a LOT more than you let on, but don't you ever fucking forget that we care about you too, moron!” Tatsuki insists, loudly berating your nephew.

“We?” Ichigo asks quietly. He's not quite admitting defeat, but he's still going to make Tatsuki explain herself fully.

“Your sisters, your parents, me, Chad, Rukia, our friends at school... hell, even Ishida!”

“So what if there's a risk!?” Tatsuki continues, whirling on her heel to face you again. “That doesn't bother me. What bothers me is not being strong enough to help my best friend when he needs me.”

You struggle to understand how Ichigo couldn't have already realized it on his own long before the situation between them came to a head. Neither one of them is willing to budge, but at the same time Tatsuki's already said her piece and Ichigo has no real response. As much as you hate to step in, you're old enough to realize an impasse when you see it. And you know without asking that Ōetsu's not going to speak up. He's just standing off to the side calmly, watching you squirm.

“Think about it,” you advise Tatsuki with a gentle sigh. “It's not the kind of decision you want to make when you're worked up about it... this is your soul we're talking about here, and for it to work you need to have the right mindset for it. Doubt's got no place.”

“What alternative is there?” Tatsuki frowns, resting her hands on her hips defensively. “We all know you wouldn't have led in with the second best idea.”

“Well, I've noticed you don't really make good use of your abilities and training,” you consider what little you know of Tatsuki's previous fights. “Learning some hakuda would be good, maybe off the Onmitsu cirriculum, and synthesizing a personal style is something you'll need to do anyway.”

“And how long would that take?” Ichigo asks with a cocked orange eyebrow.

You shrug, honestly uncertain. “No clue. I never done it myself.”

“You didn't?” Tatsuki asks in confusion. “Not even when you were in training?”

“I've never studied the modern curriculum because I helped write it.”

“Okay,” Ichigo persists, “so how long did that take?”

“It took me thirty years or so to get to the point where Yoruichi was satisfied with my hakuda,” you explain, already realizing how ridiculous this is going to sound, “during which time I learned a mish-mash of kenjutsu styles. Took me another five to fully master Tennen-Rishin Ryū on top of the instinctive ability we all have, and fifteen to fully incorporate hakuda and kenjutsu into a single style.”

“So I guess the answer is about fifty years?”

Tatsuki's unimpressed stare tells you what she's thinking even before she decides to share. “So I'll be able to fight an arrancar by the time I'm sixty?”

“Well I was also going on missions constantly, and learning kidō, and I had a magic sword to work around,” you allow, scratching idly at the back of your neck. “We're talking about a highly polished and dynamic style that draws from a lot of sources. You're already good at martial arts, all you need to do is add to that.”

“Over years,” Tatsuki retorts. “When we may have weeks.”

“It took Okita less than nine years to attain total transmission in Tennen-Rishin Ryū,” you recall. “And he was constantly improving the whole time from what I was told. So you'd probably see results immediately.”

“As impressive as evolving my powers through this method of yours could manage?” she asks.

You sigh, finding yourself struggling to even consider lying to her.

“The growth rate there would be explosive, and it would cover your current weakness of having lower spiritual pressure than your likely enemies,” you explain carefully, “assuming it works.”

“So how would it actually work?” Ōetsu asks, his curiosity finally overwhelming his preference not to get involved in such distinctly 'human' drama. You also realize that he'd never really pried into the process of creating arrancar.

“Well, a hollow's mask forms as a form of self-protection in the face of profound negative emotions,” you explain, mostly for Tatsuki's benefit as even Ichigo was likely exposed to these concepts when Urahara used the Shattered Shaft technique on him. “Their Chain of Fate and 'heart' are lost in the process, and their bodies become something quite different from shinigami or humans. The mask is also key in regulating spiritual power as a result of that, an essential part of a hollow's being.”

“For an arrancar, tearing off the mask allows someone with the knack for it to seal that power into a sword. The body evolves accordingly, becoming much more like that of a shinigami in that their power when their zanpakuto is sealed comes from a Hakusui and Saketsu. Same as mine or yours does.”

“I'm not a hollow though,” Tatsuki observes suspiciously. “Wouldn't I have to become one for that to work?”

“You have spiritual powers,” you counter, choosing your next words very carefully. “You have Hakusui and Saketsu... you're closer to a quincy than what you might call a 'normal' human. And if I pierce your Hakusui, the source of your spiritual power, I can draw a substantial portion of it off the same as I did with Apacci and the others.”

“And ya think her body's just gonna heal itself after that?” Ōetsu asks. “That'll just kill her.”

“Unless I coat my blade in my own blood,” you explain your plan for how to give this a chance to work to Tatsuki. “Kobara no Tachi allows me, with some difficulty, to use kaidō with my blood as a catalyst. Doing so with an asauchi coated in my blood should repair the damage to your Hakusui and the surrounding tissue.”

“If you'd told me you'd already done it I'd believe ya,” Ōetsu admits thoughtfully. “I can see how it's supposeta go.”

“Therein lies the problem,” you sigh. “It's all theory until someone's dumb enough to try it.”

For those of you who have followed me over from /tg/, welcome back! And for those who may just be joining us, a few general points about what to expect: I don't know. Last thread was great, but there's no guarantee that's the new norm at all, so the best I can say is that I try to keep a fairly quick pace that would've worked on /tg/ and I run for 6-8 hours a session.

Dice rolls will be called for at my discretion, typically when an action with a chance of failure is chosen. These are almost always 3d10, best of three against a set DC. If two of the 3d10 pass the DC, for example
>7,7,1 against DC 7
the roll is considered a success. If three of the 3d10 pass it's a critical success. If the best roll of the first three only has one pass it's a failure, pray that you don't have a trio of rolls with no passes.

I usually post in a lot of quests at the same time anyway. Not my fault they were all exiled to this board save for the pony and erp ones.

Plus is the weekend and I stuck sick in bed.

And it isn't also my fault that the quests I like are active at the same time.

You think back to something Apacci told you, quite some time ago: that in becoming an arrancar she had to put complete trust in you. Right now Tatsuki's problem is that she's uncomfortable with the risks and is simply doing what she thinks is necessary. You're not sure she ever trusted you completely even before the invasion of the Seireitei placed you on opposite ends of a conflict, and while you're confident she's smart enough to understand why you had to do what you did you're also aware that rationalizations and emotional responses are two very different things.

“Hey, Apacci?” you call after tapping in her number on your denreishinki. “I need you to come back and talk to Tatsuki about something... you may be the one person qualified to do it.”

“Is it important?” she sighs.

“Life and death.”

There's a pregnant pause. “I demand extra dessert tonight at the mess hall.”

“Done.”

“And a doubled alcohol ration.”

“I'll pull some strings.”

There's a second pause, during which you can imagine Apacci is processing the seriousness of whatever situation caused you to yield so easily to her demands. She could normally have expected at least a playful argument, not complete acquiescence.

“You're doin' something crazy with an asauchi, aintcha?”

You pinch your nose. “Can you talk to her about becoming an arrancar, or not?”

“I can,” she agrees after a moment of contemplation. “Hope you know what you're doin', Lady Riku.”

“Same,” you agree, hanging up and facing Tatsuki. “I've called Apacci back to talk to you, Tatsuki. She's been where you're at, if anyone can offer meaningful advice it's her.”

“Yer tellin' a human ta take advice from a hollow?” Ōetsu asks, tickled at how absurd most people would find the situation.

“No, I'm suggesting that she speak with my friend.”

If there was any more snark or disagreement to be offered before that rebuttal, you hear nothing of it. Instead you motion for Ōetsu to follow you.

“We need to talk about the rest of your stay here,” you mutter in a low voice. “Gin, I take it you're already snooping? Why don't you come out and chat.”

“Now what'd make you go an' say a mean thing like that?” your son replies from behind a nearby tree. “Snoopin' an' all, like I'm some kinda traitor?”

“Captains don't do menial work,” you sigh. “I knew you weren't going to be fixing the floor, or replacing that chair. You were gonna do something more interesting.”

“I've been caught!”

The three of you find a position where you can speak, out of the way but still close enough to watch your nephew and his former girlfriend: this turns out to be the roof of a covered walkway running between a meeting hall and the private office of one of Gin's seated officers.

“You remember there was a time when our days were mostly about killin' hollows and keepin' our family lives a secret... whatever happened to that?” Gin sighs, somewhat more genuinely than you're used to from him.

“Yeah, I remember. Shit got real, I guess,” you shake your head.

“So what exactly did you hope to accomplish by coming here?” you demand quietly, knowing that Ōetsu's one of maybe two Royal Guard members who might answer that question truthfully. Who knows when you might have the chance to hear his thoughts on the matter.

“Well, with Yamamoto outta the game and a bunch of wounded officers we've gotta do somethin',” he replies, making a token effort of resisting.

“I think she means specific stuff,” Gin presses with an eerie grin. “Let's not mince words here.”

“Well, whaddya think Aizen's gonna do about it?”

“Aizen's not the one you need ta be worried about,” Gin explains, his eyebrows knitting into a subtle frown. “That'd be Mayuri. You remember what an odd fellow he was... well, he's gotten into the habit of leaving microscopic sensing bacteria around.”

“Sensors?” Ōetsu asks. “I'm assumin' ya told Yamamoto about that?”

Gin nods. “And Captian Urahara's probably cleared out anythin' too obvious, but I'd be willin' to bet even he couldn't get 'em all. Not after the man had a century to spread 'em around.”

“So you think Aizen knows Yamamoto's dead?” you ask for clarification.

“I'd warn ya against assumin' otherwise.”

“So how'd that change his plans, ya think?”

“Well, it means he'd have ta waste less time comin' up with specific counters,” Gin explains carefully. “Aizen was never one to let a strong opponent fight at full power if he could avoid it.”

“We're getting away from the point,” you sigh wearily. “Why are you here, Tōshin?”

“There's a few Captains I felt could be doin' better,” he admits. “Kuchiki, Hitsugaya, Komamura, and Fēng. The Lieutenants could do with some trainin' too, specially Abarai.”

“So you're here to train Captains?” Gin asks, raising an eyebrow. Hard to manage that when your eyes are mostly shut.

“Yeah,” the Sword God replies. “Sounds like a pain in the ass, don't it?”

>>
>>585057
because option 1 is to shove your soul over a forge fire and beating it into the shape of a sword while option 2 is theoretically killing yourself via sword impalement and turning into a evolved hollow (aka arrancar) which means purposely losing a part of your humanity.
>>
>>585057
I'll weigh in on this before I start writing. Both the Shattered Shaft technique Urahara used on Ichigo and the method Rukia used are known to have a high failure rate, while the arrancarization technique Riku developed has worked 100% of the time... but only on menos. It's a technique that's had to be adapted to maybe work on a human, and honestly games the system a little.

So it's not strictly speaking making her a shinigami, or a hollow: it's making her a human with a zanpakuto, and nobody knows how that'll end up working. Thus the danger.
>>
>>585089
I knew that Urahara's technique was incredibly risky, didn't think what Rukia used was also dangerous. That adds up then.
>>
>>585089
well from what you explained so far it seems the base spirit sword works by being exposed to beings with sufficient reiatsu to imprint upon it. The forging process (or the arrancarization) is the same with giving a shimigami an asutchi and letting it awaken over time from passive exposure.
>>
>>585127
>>585089
except in Riku's arrancarization technique the exposure/imprinting process is the equivalent of flash exposure of a nuke to a camera and it's a race to see how much detail can you capture in the photo/sword when taking the picture. I suck with analogies.
>>
>>585119
She stabbed him in the heart, and even admitted it was a slim chance.

>>585127
Essentially yes, it's doing by force what usually takes years. Asauchi also don't typically work with anything but a shinigami, because that's how they're designed.

“So what do we do about the Reigai?” you ask, changing tack. “They may not still have their full compliment anymore, but it's still a serious problem that we don't know where they're attacking us from. If only we knew that much we could finish them off.”

“We'd go ourselves, but we're concerned we might get copied too,” Ōetsu admits, almost sheepishly. “That'd be pretty fuckin' bad.”

“I see,” Gin nods thoughtfully. “I'm sure we'd do better than you think, but still. No reason to go out of our way and make things worse.”

“Well, we've got a plan for that,” the Sword God insists. “And I actually think it's a pretty good one. So just let those morons come to us, and this time we'll just hafta wipe 'em all out in one go.”

While you don't really like the lack of specificity there it seems like he's not going to share anything about the “plans” that are in place, probably out of some sense of weird theatricality. But you can't help it, you have to know more because even if he doesn't have any particular grudge against you he's done far from enough to earn your trust.

“What plan? Just quit beating around the damn bush already!”

“Okay, fine!” he complains. “Be a buzzkill. We're tryin' ta contact Kūkaku, an' some other folks, and between the all of us and your arrancar pals we'll kick their asses for sure. So quit worryin' already!”

Your sister? You were vaguely aware that she had some sort of working relationship with the Royal Guard, but you've never really discussed it in any detail because it was considered too secret even among family. It's the one exception you can think of to the way the Shiba typically deal with each other.

“That's better, you could have just told me that,” you reply, running your fingertips through your hair with a deep breath. “So, since we're on the topic... anyone have any ideas for what the rest of us can do to prepare?”

“Fucked if I know,” Ōetsu admits with a shrug. “I'm not even totally sure how the hell your zanpakuto work, and Gin's got a good handle on Shinsō... he knows which technique he's gotta start usin' to make headway.”

“I hate that you can do that!” Gin frowns at the implication that Tōshin knows everything about his zanpakuto and its abilities.

That leaves only one person who can make any suggestions, and you get the nagging feeling she has one or two to discuss with you.

“You got any ideas, Tenkotsuki?”

There are a few moments of silence as she debates whether to tell you what she's come up with, which you immediately find somewhat suspicious. “Tenkotsuki? Are you okay?”

“All these long years, my dear Riku, I have sought to provide you with the most reliable, complete, and impartial information that I possibly could,” she begins, speaking unusually carefully even by her standards. “I cherish your trust in me, and would do nothing to betray that trust or to take advantage for my own ends. My voice is yours, and I trust you implicitly to speak and act in my interests in turn.”

“That's not a great way to start a conversation,” you tell her silently, focusing your thoughts inward. “A disclaimer like that means it's something really serious.”

“What I have to suggest... it could be very dangerous, and even I find it somewhat distasteful. In fact it would validate the fears many others hold of us if it were known that I even suggested it. But it would help your power grow like no other method would, that much is assured.”

>Tell me. I've always placed my trust in you, and that's not going to change.

“Tell me,” you gently press her for more information. “I've always trusted you, and that's never going o change. So if you're just trying to tell me about a possibility I'm all ears.”

“The fact that I am so hesitant to reveal my thoughts does not dissuade you?”

“You're my pride, remember? You consider lots of stuff distasteful.”

“Well, you are no doubt aware of the centuries worth of mythos surrounding kitsune,” she begins, clearly trying to build a detailed narrative to frame whatever 'distasteful' suggestion she has to make. “Specifically about the rate at which our powers develop. It requires a matter of centuries for us to reach our full potential, about one hundred lunar years per additional tail. As there are technically three souls that make up “Kusajishi Riku”, we are actually much closer to our peak potential than it might seem. But by my estimates, it will still take us more than fifty years to reach it.”

“Aizen is likely to act well before that time, would you not agree?”

“If by that you mean within the year,” you muse silently inside your mind,”then yes. Definitely.”

“Then there is one likely method for concluding that growth process within the time allotted.”

“Are you talking about some sort of time fuckery?” you sigh. “Because I'm really not comfortable with that sorta thing.”

“Shinreiryoku can be stolen.”

Even Rosa's presence feels somehow quieter in your mind at the notion, while you process what's been suggested. Stealing divine reiryoku the same way Aizen and Muramasa did, the way that Arturo was trying to do before he was killed.

“You what now?” Rosa asks, still stunned.

“I do not like the idea either,” Tenkotsuki admits quietly. “But Riku, if you were to find some outside source of shinreiryoku I could subordinate it to my will. It could effectively accelerate our otherwise slow progress, and depending on the source it could do so by the time Aizen Sōsuke acts against the Seireitei once more.”

“And as far as I have considered it that is the only reasonable means by which to accomplish that goal.”

“Where would we even start doing something like that, vixen!?” Rosa demands loudly enough to make your ears ring. “You're not talking sense, dammit!”

“I considered that very question before deciding to even raise the possibility,” Tenkotsuki replies carefully. “The nature of the Ōken possessed by each Royal Guard member, for example, is divine due to its origins. It is granted them by the Soul King itself, and between the five members the amount of power should be sufficient to advance our combined power by at least one tail. Possibly by two.”

Having the Royal Guard on our side is way more beneficial than attaining personal power.

Also, yes. It is quite distasteful. We're better than that.

On the other hand, if we gather info on some unquestionably malicious presence wielding divinity, that I might consider.

Time fuckery, too. That'd be okay.
>>
Maybe track down captain tbs god? It's still ducking around here somewhere right?

SHIT.
That really is DISTASTEFUL. And considering our status being on the guard's potential shitlist, that's really a last resort/moral event horizon sort of thing. Unless we somehow engineer our own death like 1000 years back.
>>585517
that's the same thing as killing a god as a half god. Mimihagi may be fallen but he's still a god. And someone who's part god going up and killing a divinity is straight up crossing a line.
>>
>>585517
Don't think I approve of eating Mimihagi.

On the other hand as a favour to the royal guard we could totally take out any troublesome gods they need eliminated. I mean since there being so nice and helping us out.
>>
Still we need to make sure to not look down on Tenkotsuki for answering our question, since even knowing what you won't sink to is good information.
>>
>>585536
And that would make the royal guard try to kill us.
>>
>>585536
true, but it is still DISTASTEFUL in a sense that we're just robbing gods of their power. what Tenkotsuki is describing is exactly the amount of low Aizen is stooping to in getting more powerful. And we're not Aizen.
>>
>>585544
I'm intrigued. Why would helping them out with a problem and then while they aren't looking eating said problem cause them to kill us?
>>
>>585551
because that's considered divine cannibalism. And tenkotsuki used to be a god and Riku, Rosa, and Tenkotsuki all consider themselves above it in gaining more power.
>>
>>585479
“You're talking about killing the Royal Guard?” you ask incredulously.

“Not necessarily killing,” she corrects you. “The power of the Ōken is generally concentrated in one limb. But yes, dead would work as well. I admit I would feel little remorse over it due to our rather personal history, and Ichibē in particular seems likely to become your enemy eventually regardless of what path you choose. But I would also understand if you would feel badly for doing such a thing to some of the less unreasonable among them."

“Not to mention the backlash,” Rosa reminds you both. “We off one of those guys and suddenly we're back to being public enemy number one through three.”

“Never ceases to amaze me whenever you become the voice of reason,” you quip.

“Cold and calculating,” Rosa replies calmly. “If I were to get the chance to kill them I'd enjoy the hell out of it though... it'd just cause more problems for us as things are.”

“However it could give us access to our peak performance,” Tenkotsuki reminds you. “As I have said I find it personally distasteful, even in spite of my personal feelings against the Royal Guard themselves. However, I felt you should be aware. Who knows, if the situation deteriorates enough they may offer their Ōken willingly, thus alleviating the obvious moral dilemma.”

“I assume there are other options you've thought through?”

“The Hōgyoku is also at least partly divine in nature,” she continues, “though I cannot say for certain where that aspect of its existence comes from.”

“We're not getting Aizen's without some sort of insane sneaking mission, or if we've already essentially beaten him in combat,” you sigh, “so that leaves Urahara's.”

“Good luck getting him to give that up without a fight,” Rosa mutters. “The man doesn't hate us per se, he's just paranoid in general.”

“It is another case where it is only likely to happen through cooperation if the situation is sufficiently hopeless,” Tenkotsuki concludes. “The variable is whether your wife could recreate the Hōgyoku in such a way that we could use the copy instead, though personally I doubt it. Any facsimile loses something in the process, and duplicating shinreiryoku seems like an impossibility.”

“Sounds like we need a third option,” Rosa suggests.
>2/3
>>
>>585559
I agree that's it's divine cannibalism. I'm slightly confused about your point re Riku since we are collectively Riku's conscious. And I am very confused by what any of this has to do with my question about the Royal Guard killing us.

“There are other likely possibilities,” Tenkotsuki informs you. “Though it would likely rely on Lady Yoruichi's help to access such items. The Sōkyoku is one good example of an object within the Seireitei that possesses shinreiryoku, and I would be willing to bet that there is more than one such object.”

“There's also Mimihagi,” Rosa adds, “or others like it. But Captain Tuberculosis needs him back to live, so... yeah. Probably not something you'd like.”

“Aside from flagrant teamkilling I won't rule any option out just now,” you sigh. “But I'll start by asking Yoruichi about it, see what we can do without provoking a conflict. I see why it's important to be ready for whatever Aizen can bring to us, but I also refuse to do things his way.”

“Honestly I am quite happy to hear you say that,” Tenkotsuki admits. “But I thank you for agreeing to hear what I had to say, dear Riku. I promise that I will try to avoid bringing such distasteful matters to your attention again in the future.”

“Well, let's see how this shitshow plays out,” Rosa jokes. “But if the Royal Guard turn on us anyway, I call dibs.”

“Noted.”

The world around you comes back into focus.

“So you have a nice chat?” Gin teases you, by this point knowing full well what that slightly glassy-eyed look you're told you get when you speak to your swords means.

“I did, actually,” you lie. “I have a few ideas for how to improve some of my abilities, but nothing I can work on immediately or anything.”

“That's good ta hear,” Ōetsu nods enthusiastically, totally oblivious to the content of your inner dialogue. “Ya stop improvin' and it's just a slow death, you get what I'm sayin'?”

“In a sense, yes,” you nod. “So when can I go ahead and get a hold of an asauchi for this... uh, project?”

“I got one lyin' around someplace,” he tells you. “You think she's gonna go for it?”

“I know she is,” you insist quietly. “That's just who she is, and she feels strongly about it. There's no way she won't at least try.”

“Then best of luck,” the Sword God tells you, and you can tell by his tone of voice the sentiment is sincere. “I know yer all about protectin' humans.”

When you meet Tatsuki again, she and Apacci are laughing together about something. “And then he says to me 'that's not where I parked my bike'!”

Apacci bursts out in another peal of laughter. “Man, Lady Riku, your nephew's kind of a moron!”

“Yeah, she told me her piece and I pretty much decided immediately,” Tatsuki replies. Thankfully she seems a lot calmer now that she's discussed the topic with someone who's been through it. The young human brushes some of her messy black hair behind her ears to get it in some sort of order. “I'm doing it. “If you've decided, there'll be an asauchi here soon,” you tell her. “And we can get this done.”

“I've decided,” Tatsuki reiterates.

It takes Ōetsu about half an hour to return with the blade in question, and he stands ready to assist in any way. Really, he's just hanging around to see this firsthand. At least Apacci is staying for a genuine reason, which is both a show of support for Tatsuki and to keep Ichigo under control. Ichigo however is a lot less relaxed than either of them, and everything about his posture and attitude exudes nervousness.

“Tatsuki's gonna be just fine,” he mutters to you as you take the asauchi from its creator. “Or else I'm gonna be pissed the hell off.”

“Same. You ready?”

Tatsuki glances down at the sword in your hand as you unsheath it, and you place your fingertips against her chest. “This is where your Hakusui is, so this is where the sword's gonna go.”

“I'm ready. Do it when you've set up.”

“Prohibit, Tenkotsuki! Raze, Kobara no Tachi!”

With two bursts of powerful reiatsu you release your own zanpakuto, nearly putting Tatsuki on her knees from the raw power alone. Instead of leaving her wobbling on her feet you help her down without falling over completely. Once she's in a more stable position you wipe your left hand along the length of your own blade then wipe the blood along the length of the asauchi.

“Here we go,” you announce, placing the tip of the zanpakuto just over Tatsuki's heart. “Three... two... one...”

With a disturbingly effortless thrust, you pierce Tatsuki through the heart.

She looks you in the eyes even as you struggle to draw any spritual power from her body, as if wondering whether the technique has failed or not. And for a moment, even you have to wonder whether you've accidentally killed her. You can hear Apacci shouting something at Tatsuki, and Ichigo shouting something at you... not helping.

“Shut up!” you roar. “I'm trying to concentrate!”

But something feels like it's resisting you. If you didn't know any better you'd say that Tatsuki's power was willfully disobeying your will, trying desperately to reject everything about this process. Any more force and it'll kill her, much longer and it'll kill her, lose focus... you try and put it out of your mind.

“Stay with me here, Tatsuki!” you tell her, focusing solely on the young woman who you've stabbed through the chest and the difficult task at hand. “It almost feels like your power's resisting. I'll do what I can to ease the pain.”

You use a little bit of your own reiatsu to start to heal the tissue around the blade, ideally numbing the pain for Tatsuki. Her expression shifts from one of helpless shock to grim determination, waiting for you to somehow pull this out.

>Focus more on healing. This can still work, but it'll take much longer than an arrancar.
>Try and coax Tatsuki's power out more forcefully, mindful of where her limits might be.
>Drastic measures: have Tenkotsuki mess with time a little, give you time to find a better solution.
>Gamble on Bankai making Tatsuki's power a little less “unruly”.
>Back out now, don't risk any more and accept a weaker zanpakuto than you'd normally accept.
>Other?

I have done that in the past, but failed to notice in time. The resulting situation is precarious rather than outright failure or total success, which is probably the way I'd have written it even had I noticed the failure to properly link.

Damnit, I don't think taking our time is as good an idea as it seems, because she could die from the strain. I wish we didn't bring this up with her because Apacci and company didn't really have anything better to do, but Tatsuki could have a whole human life ahead of her.

It's not really a gamble. Tatsuki without power has a far greater chance of dying than the process of gaining power. Some of the enemies can kill a human, even a strong one, just by being around. And she won't back off.

So it's either exposing her to this comparatively lesser risk or imprisoning her somewhere.

>>586359
No, this is more like trying to defeat a tank by getting really good with nunchucks. It's retarded.

>>586383
"Close your eyes and focus on wanting to be stronger and nothing else."

I don't know, something like "Remember that you asked for this, -needed this-. Focus, you'll never defeat your enemies unless you first learn to master yourself.

>>
>>586404
>>586415
eh, I've never been a fan of 'use this power to protect one person' as a motivation; i know it's one of her reasons for wanting to be strong, but if we make that her one driving goal what'll she do when she has to fight for another cause, fight alongside someone else, or protect someone else?
>>
>>586441

I think showing we understand her motivation does both. Which is why I wrote in what I did.

>>
>>586465

>>

>>
>>586383
"I know being stabbed in the heart makes it hard, but please, trust me."

I don't know, I hope we're not actually voting on these.
>>
>>586474
We want her to calm down, but I don't think we want her to clear her mind.

If anything she should focus on her sense of self as much as possible, because how else will she imprint the Asauchi with her soul?
>>
>>586476
Yeah this.

"Remember why you are doing this, for Ichigo, you want to protect him so hust focus on that!"
>>
>>586449
You must have really hated Ichigo, then. That's not only his primary motivation, it's the entirety of his personality. He literally had no other defining traits, ambitions, or stakes. Pretty much every other character was better written than him, now that I think about it.

>>586459
No, we definitely do want to kill her. Kind of. Death god powers and all.

>>586453
It does neither. She needs to let go of her power in its entirety for us to forge it as we will. We're trying to modify her entire mode of existence here.

>>586472
>>586465
>>586459
>not getting the best reference for this
>>
>>586489
Then re-word it. Ask her to flow into us or what she needs to do. She can die permanently.
>>
>>586489
It's from Korra isn't it? When the revolutionary guy lost his love interest and learned to fly?

I don't think that's really applicable here.
>>
>>586489
I actually had a lot of problems with Ichigo, and mostly read the manga for the supporting cast, minus Orihime. But he at least wanted to protect everyone, rather than a single person; living for one person and one person only feels really silly, you know?
>>
>>586383
At this rate, Tatsuki is going to die before you've finished the job. And if you don't keep slowly drawing out power from her soul, she won't end up with a zanpakuto worth using. So the only thing you can really think to do short of a truly crazy gamble is to pour much more energy into not just healing her, but keeping her alive while you and Tenkotsuki continue to channel energy into the asauchi.

You place your free hand on Tatsuki's shoulder, and look her straight in the eyes. “Tatsuki, remember what you're doing this for. What you trained for years for, what you came to the Seireitei for, and what we're doing this for.”

“I'm trying dammit!” she insists through gritted teeth. Her energy feels like it's 'slipped' a little, as if it's just ever so slightly easier to draw on. Her mindset is off, her mind is clouded... but she's beginning to get a handle on it. So you keep talking, and continue to pour your own reiatsu into keeping Tatsuki on life support.

You shake your head. “You're doing it wrong! Just close your eyes, focus on the reasons that brought you here, and let go of your doubts. Empty your mind of anything that could hold you back and you'll become what we both know you can be.”

After several minutes that feel like an eternity, you think you've drawn about as much spiritual power into the asauchi as you're ever going to. It's taken a massive amount of energy, most of which went into keeping Tatsuki alive through the process, but you're finally in a position to slowly withdraw the blade. Tatsuki winces in pain as steel works itself free, the sudden absence of mechanical pressure within the wound prompting a fresh spurt of blood from her chest and back that joins the pool that's already collected around your knees. To her credit, she keeps a set and determined face the whole time, and doesn't cry or scream despite how much she clearly wants to.

And when the blade is finally freed, her appearance changes. You briefly see the wound close as the last of your healing efforts wear off, before her body is clad in black cloth. Black hakama, a plain black sash, and a familiar sleeveless, backless uniform. Rough cloth wraps itself around her wrists and forearms, as if preparing her for a boxing match, and the blade in your hand changes shape into a short sword with no guard. It falls from your hand as you take a few steps, getting clear of the blood pool, before slumping to the ground.

Tatsuki makes it no further, even with her new powers.

I think it'd be worded better as forging a weapon. She's enduring the furnace and she'll come out stronger than ever before. Or equate it to physical training. She's worked hard before and not given up.

I just can't condone, "Shed your mortal coil!"

I'd also prefer some sort of personal pride in it rather than, FOR ICHIGO!

“You look like shit,” Gin tells you, propping you up against a nearby tree trunk as Ichigo does the same for Tatsuki.

“I had to literally keep her alive with my own reiatsu while performing the technique,” you explain, exhaustion setting into your voice. “That didn't go the way I expected it to at all.”

“But it worked?” Ichigo asks, glancing nervously back and forth between you and Tatsuki. “I mean, she's fine now?”

“Do I look dead to you?” Tatsuki grumbles weakly. You can see on her face that she's even more exhausted than you are. “No extra home through my chest, no mask. Coulda gone worse.”

“It almost did,” Apacci observes. “It was never that shit for any of us.”

“I guess Tatsuki's anatomy isn't exactly like a shinigami's,” you guess, “or else her power wasn't very compatible with a zanpakuto. Either way I just had to keep at it, really. No other alternative. Had I backed out the sword wouldn't have been worth the trouble, and she'd be worse off in the long run than if I'd left her alone.”

“I feel like I could eat a cow then slep for a week,” Tatsuki groans. “Damn.”

“That's good,” you insist with what little enthusiasm you can still muster. “Means your body knows it has to recharge itself. You may find your reiatsu's as strong with your sword sealed as you were when you fought Mirai.”

“So could I fight an arrancar, you...” Tatsuki begins, before nodding off. You check quickly to make sure she's still breathing.

“No idea,” you mutter. “But we'll find out soon enough.”

“The hell does that mean?” Ichigo demands.

With some struggling you manage to get to your feet. “Gin Ichigo, make sure she gets back to the Ninth's barracks in good order and let her rest. And have some food ready for her when she wakes up... probably gonna have to be a lot.”

“Ōetsu, I assume miss Hikifune brought some of her cooking?”

“You betcha.”

“Good, I'll need some. I have something to discuss with Captain Shihōin, and I've taken long enough here.”

It takes about an hour for you to reach the Second Division's barracks, a process that's made much slower than usual by the fact that you've spent so much of your reiatsu keeping a second person alive with kaidō. Simply healing Tatsuki might not have drawn you down so much, but had you not done something dramatic she probably would have died. You consider the possibility that it may be better never to tell her or your nephew exactly how close Tatsuki came to death.

A long flight of steep stone stairs leads up to the gate, and within you find the large central courtyard packed full of men and women in the concealing black uniforms of the Onmitsukidō: it must be a mandatory sparring session, based on how many of those men and women are lying on the ground in uncomfortable positions. And across the courtyard, near the rather ornate gate to the main Division offices, you can see a lone figure in an orange shirt fighting off a dozen or so opponents.

Yoruichi carefully redirects a flying kick, grabbing her attacker by the leg mid-shout and swinging him into a masked fighter who got the bright idea to try attacking her from behind while she was looking away, and the two men go down in an awkward tangle of limbs. With a casual sidestep she avoids a wild haymaker, and strikes a third attacker three times under his right shoulder in quick succession before grabbing the extended arm and flipping him over her shoulders. As you draw closer she notices you and smiles.

“Captain Kusajishi,” she greets you warmly even as she elbows a fourth man in the nose. “Afraid I'm a little busy, can it wait a moment?”

“Sure,” you nod, walking past and taking a seat on the steps behind her. You can tell that's not the answer her 'sparring partners' were hoping to hear. “I know how important it is to keep in good practice.”

“Kay,” she acknowledges you, spinning on her toes and sending her right foot in a wide arc that ends with her heel smashing into an Onmitsu member's cheek. “I shouldn't be long. Unless you'd rather step in and have a little fun for yourself?”

“Nah, it's not something for everyone's ears,” you admit as your wife follows through with her momentum, dropping low and taking the legs out from under yet another aggressor in a sweep with her left leg. As he falls, her left fist catches his chest in a powerful hook and sends him sliding across the courtyard.

“I see,” she muses, raising one hand in a signal for the fight to stop. “Fifth Squad, most of you are committing to your attacks too late. If you're not landing your own strike one instant after your opponent lands his you've wasted the opportunity.”

“And for the love of all things sacred don't ever let me catch any of you yelling when you're attacking someone from behind!”

After lingering just a moment to hear the chorus of “yes, ma'am!”s from her subordinates as they help pick each other up off the ground, she motions for you to follow her towards a more private location.

“We'll be alone here,” Yoruichi tells you as you follow her down a covered walkway and into what looks to be a private exercise room. There are a few Onmitsu here, who scatter like baby spiders when they see their Commander and another Captain walk into the room. Whatever they were doing before is immediately put on hold as they leave. “Shut the doors behind you, please.”

“Yes, ma'am!” the last one acknowledges his order as he steps outside.

“Now then, let's talk,” Yoruichi purrs, shrugging off the orange shirt to reveal her uniform underneath. With one foot she sends the garment sailing across the room where it comes to rest against the wall, and slides into a wide, low stance. Her hands mimic the tiger-style fist, but with her fingertips tucked in tighter to spread the force of her strikes over a wider area.

“Claws in, that's thoughtful,” you smile, settling into seiza. You're not typically one for these low stances, but iai is commonly performed from the formal seated position and adopting it here forces Yoruichi to practice what she was just preaching: she'll have to commit to attacking you first, giving you a clear scenario to respond and thus something of an advantage.

Your wife smirks. “I'd hate to scratch your pretty face by mistake!”

With that taunt she attacks, striking downwards with her left hand and forcing you to respond. You rise to your feet in an instant, raising your right arm to push her fist to the outside then throwing yourself forward onto your shoulders to avoid a sweeping low kick aimed at your leading right leg. Rolling through you re-orient yourself just in time to lean back, avoiding a low roundhouse kick and finally countering with a series of right jabs and a quick left hook. Yoruichi responds just as quickly, striking at your wrists with her fists and elbows to keep anything from landing on her and raising her right arm to block that last hook.

“Not bad, considering how tired you look,” she compliments you, arm still braced against your strike. “So what's up?”

“I drew some of Tatsuki's powers into an asauchi,” you explain, withdrawing your right arm and taking a series of uncommitted punches to your forearms and elbows before Yoruichi pauses to let you finish. “Ended up having to use my reiatsu to keep her on life support.”

You fake a low kick to force Yoruichi to backpedal, but instead use it to switch to a more standard stance leading with your left. A jab from your new lead side goes clean over Yoruichi's shoulders and her fist strikes your carefully-positioned right palm. Again you both pause, the pressure of Yoruichi's strike constant as she whistles. “That sounds like a crazy idea, even coming from you. I assume it worked?”

“She's alive, but resting. Haven't seen what she can do just yet.”

You drop your left elbow towards Yoruichi's back, and she rolls with the blow before sweeping your legs out from under you. However you simply use that momentum to continue rolling, eventually pushing off the mats below you and landing on your feet. You see That Yoruichi has risen as well, remaining in that low Heihuquan stance she favors.

“That's good to hear,” she nods changing stances to something you've rarely seen from her: a high crane stance. “But I take it that's not what you're here to talk about? That's more dinner table conversation than 'run out and see her now' conversation.”

“You're right of course,” you admit, avoiding her snap-kick before she avoids your rather predictable retaliatory sweep in turn. “Tenkotsuki and I were considering ways to accelerate our development.”

Pausing for a moment mid-strike, Yoruichi frowns in thought. “Not training, but development? What're you getting at?”

Of course she picked up on the distinction. She knows you far too well for her to miss that sort of detail, even in the middle of throwing a punch.

best to let the wife deliberate and ponder options on her side without making an early committed decision.

Question: How did Oetsu react to the dangerous but mostly successful asauchi/arrancarization process on a human with spiritual powers?

Yes.

After all we can't fight a battle in three fronts, that would be suicidal.

You lower your fists to your side, and upon seeing you relax your wife does as well.

“That bad, huh?”

“It's kind of an unpleasant topic,” you admit quietly, “but Tenkotsuki believes that by locating and consuming sources of divine energy we could speed up what'd normally take decades.”

“So basically what everyone who's tried attacking us so far either has done or was trying to do?” Yoruichi asks, a slender black eyebrow turning up at the corner. She's trying hard to suppress her doubts, that eyebrow is a dead giveaway.

“We agreed not to take it from anything alive and sentient unless it was offered,” you explain, hoping to address the most obvious concern right away. “It's not like I'd be lopping off the Royal Guards' arms or anything.”

“So you're talking objects, artifacts, that sort of thing?”

You nod once. “I am. And before you say it I'm aware of your duties, and I wouldn't even bring this up if I didn't feel it was important.”

“Well you know as well as I do I can't just hand out divine artifacts on a whim,” Yoruichi sighs, motioning for you to sit with her on the tatami against the wall. “It goes against everything the Shihōin Clan is meant to do, and as the head of the clan my hands are fairly well tied. It's not that I wouldn't if I could, but I just can't.”

“And I'd never ask you to,” you remind her. “Nor would I resort to trying to steal the treasures your Clan is sworn to protect. You know that.”

“I do,” she nods quietly. “Which is why I feel no guilt at all telling you that there probably are objects hidden away out there that aren't under my jurisdiction. Things that have been sequestered and forgotten, or else made heirlooms of other houses.”

“It's possible, but we'd need to really work out the details and figure out how to do it right.”

“Well, before we go around trying to steal stuff so I can eat it,” you muse, the mental image no doubt prompting that silly grin on Yoruichi's face, “maybe you should try replicating something that you know has a divine origin?”

“I guess,” Yoruichi nods, drawing her sword Shōsōtō. “If anyone saw me doing this it'd be a problem.”

“I'll close my eyes,” you offer with a smirk. Your wife simply rolls her eyes.

She releases her Bankai, quickly replicating a small wooden object no bigger than your fist with it then resheathing it. The object falls into the palm of her outstretched hand.

“This is the Ōin,” she explains as you take it from her hand. “The King's Seal, capable of reshaping space and matter. You remember I mentioned it way back when you first got promoted?”

You nod thoughtfully. “Yeah, it's a weaker version that we Captains get to use to change our Division grounds. So this thing really is of divine origin?”

“I haven't gotten it out of the barriers to check any time recently,” Yoruichi admits, glancing down at the artifact. “But it should be divine, yes. It's in the same class as the Ōken, after all.”

You stare at the object in your hand. It's clearly got some power to it, but unless you're very much mistaken it's not actually got any divine power. You ask Tenkotsuki to confirm.

“We were correct,” she tells you. “Your wife's sword may be able to replicate the effects of any object using her own reiatsu, but the divine spark is not present in this copy. I am unsure how more complicated effects are possible however, if shinreiryoku is not involved. If only Captain Urahara were as interested in this sword as he is in me, maybe we would have an explanation.”

“Shōsōtō didn't replicate the original's shinreiryoku,” you tell Yoruichi. “Tenkotsuki's not sure how it can even have the effect it does without it, but there you go. Turns out she doesn't know everything.”

“Don't let her hear you say that,” Yoruichi teases you with a gentle nudge.

“Too late,” Tenkotsuki grumbles.

“So that option's off the table,” you sigh for dramatic emphasis, returning to your seat against the wall and patting the tatami to encourage Yoruichi to join you, which she does. “What sort of other objects are you talking about?”

“The Sōkyoku's not even something we really use anymore,” Yoruichi muses as she runs down a list of possible sources of shinreiryoku, “and it probably has more than what you need. If you got permission that'd be the first choice I think. The Ise clan also has a zanpakuto with divine origins that's passed down between generations.”

“I've never seen Nanao carrying it,” you observe.

Yoruichi shrugs. “My understanding is she refused it. You could ask Shunsui for more details, his family and the Ise have been close for centuries so he might know what's going on with that.”

“Any other ideas?”

“Kisuke'd never hand over the Hōgyoku, if that's something you've considered,” she sighs, resting lightly against your side. “I think he's using it to try and devise a way to counter Aizen's own creation, or at least to understand what it's capable of. He's even cagey with the details when I ask. It's hardly like him.”

“Then I guess we'd have to find any other possibilities ourselves,” you begin to ponder aloud. “Maybe check the academy records, or your Clan's documents. Maybe a god was sealed away somewhere and forgotten, like Arturo was.”

“There's gotta be other options.”

Yoruichi straightens up, turning in place to face you. “Have you told anyone else about this?”

“No.”

“Maybe you should.”

As much as I want to try asking Shunsui, he's still shaken up from the loss of both his "father" and "brother/best man". We could take the time to help him cope/console with his loss while we ask for permission although this sort of combination is horrible on emotional stability and trust.

You probably know about Snowflake being kept alive due to editorial mandate. Turns out there were a ton more of those, in addition to him being forced to end the manga in far too little issues to properly go through everyone's ongoing character arcs. He probably had a whole buncha shit planned he had to cut out.

Personal grudges were involved due to Kubo refusing to be any less Kubo even in Corporate Nippon. There were also a few times he wrote himself into a corner. A few key weaknesses of his became more prominent as the manga went on, like his lack of characterization and how he deals with stress. He eventually stopped paying attention to things like panel flow and background art altogether.

He basically just wanted to draw awesome badasses fighting other awesome badasses and little else, but they didn't let him, and the whole thing broke down spectacularly.

“Absolutely not Kisuke,” you mutter, causing Yoruichi to glance at you. You can tell she's a little sad to hear you shoot down the idea of speaking with her old friend that quickly. “I've got nothing against the man personally, I just know the way he tends to think and I'd prefer that he not know. He'd probably take it the wrong way, you know?”

“There's always that chance, I'll admit.”

“So maybe we should go to Shunsui first. After all two of our plans would mean going through him.”

“I think he's already started moving into the First Division,” Yoruichi tells you, standing up and offering you a hand that you gratefully accept. “We could probably catch him there.”

“Then let's go get him.”

The two of you excuse yourselves from the sparring hall and walk through the Second Division's grounds. Yoruichi stops briefly to grab her Captain's haori from her quarters, leading you past the room that was once your home along the way. It only takes a few minutes, and she waves off the Shihōin Clan guards that make an offer to accompany her that they all know she's never going to accept. Really the only reason they're still here is to watch over the building while Yoruichi's asleep there.

First Division is in chaos when you finally arrive there, with all sorts of furniture and personal effects being moved into and out of storage. In the middle of it all Lieutenant Ise is directing traffic, clearly overwhelmed at the amount of stuff there is to move. A tea chest goes by being carried between two shinigami, and as one trips the door opens and drops a small box onto the floor.

“Tea?” Yoruichi muses, picking up the box after it clatters to a stop at her feet. “Why is there still tea in this thing? I know it's the former Head Captain's stuff, but he's not going to be drinking this.”

“I believe the order was to empty out all consumables,” Nanao recalls, adjusting her glasses. “You two, please set that chest down and offload anything still stored in it.”

“I'll just hang onto this,” Yoruichi announces, holding the box against her hip. “I was the one who gave this to him in the first place, after all.”

“Fair enough. So what brings you here, Captains?” Lieutenant Ise asks. “It's a rather unfortunately busy time right now, so I'm afraid that if it's business that can wait I'll have to request you schedule a meeting for later.”

“It's important enough that your Captain should hear it immediately,” you admit before dropping your voice and taking a step in. “I understand that he's probably not in the mood, but this is a matter that he absolutely must know about, because it directly affects his duties.”

“Then I suppose I have no choice,” Nanao frowns. “He's upstairs, in the office. He... volunteered to clear Captain Yamamoto's personal effects from there himself.

You and Yoruichi exchange a worried glance, and Yoruichi weighs the tea in her hand thoughtfully.

“Lieutenant, please prepare hot water and wagashi,” your wife orders quietly. “Yatsuhashi if you have them.”

“I believe we have a few filled with cherry,” Nanao informs you. “Would those do?”

“This is Huangjin Gui, so I suppose a fruit-flavored wagashi would do. Please bring three plates up. The water should be just below the boiling point.”

“Right away, Captain.”

Rather than take the stairs like normal people, you and Yoruichi are able to leap from roofttop to rooftop until you reach the top of one of the buildings near the center of the Seireitei: the Head Captain's office. Unfortunately you're on the back side of the building, where there's an open patio with a view of half the city. It's on this patio that Yamamoto kept his desk, and unlike the rest of the headquarters it seems everything is more or less where he left it.

“Ah, I wasn't expecting visitors,” Shunsui greets you from his chair behind the desk. “Please, have a seat. And try to overlook the papers lying around everywhere.”

“What's up with that?” Yoruichi asks, glancing around at the papers strewn all over the room. You even have to set a few aside so you can use the chair. “I don't remember the Old Man being this messy.”

“He wasn't, except for some of his handwriting. I've been trying to sort out personal and official papers, but it's kind of hard to read some of it. So I have to lay it out based on topic and date... some of this stuff goes back a thousand years.”

“Sounds like a mess,” you offer Shunsui a small smile.

“Yeah, it's certainly not easy,” he sighs, rubbing his forehead above the eyepatch. “And Nanao's busy coordinating our move, so she sent me up here to sort through it on my own! Jeez, it's enough to make me wonder who really runs this Division.”

“She said you volunteered,” you observe. “Come on, take a break.”

“You caught me,” he admits. “I've been dwelling too much, haven't I?”

“Only you know the answer to that,” Yoruichi tells him. “So how've you really been, Shunsui? Take off the proverbial haori and talk to us for real.”

“The work's not that bad, it's just a lot to think about.”

“Speaking of things to think about, have you had time to write anything to offer for the magazine?” you ask him as his Lieutenant enters the office with a tray of plates, cups, and a pot of hot water. She sets it down on a low table that's also in the room, and the three of you move over to it.

“No, I get the feeling I'm not gonna have the time for a while,” Shunsui admits with a sheepish smile. “Sorry to disapppoint.”

Yoruichi leans over the table and sets to work preparing the tea. According to her the temperature is a little too low, but it should suffice. “That's too bad.”

“That's how it goes sometimes,” Shunsui responds, taking a bite from the wagashi. “This is good... strawberry, right?”

“Kurosaki isn't here,” Yoruichi tells him.

“What, is his name actually written that way?”

“No,” you insist, taking a bite of your own snack. “It's spelled as 'one who protects'. His father was a big fan of that kinda naming convention, putting a 'one' in the name.”

“A lot of noble clans do it too,” Yoruichi explains, accounting for Isshin's tendency as well as the characters to his own name. “It's supposed to make for a stronger name.”

“A lot to live up to, I guess,” Shunsui nods sagely. “You've done a good job... after all I bet even your parents didn't expect you to get so strong you could beat up other Captains with your bare hands!”

“Flatterer.”

“So on the topic of flattery,” you continue, having waited just long enough for Shunsui to take his first sip of tea. “I found that old romance novel you submitted to me decades ago.”

Shunsui immediately spits the tea out in a geyser of brown droplets. To his credit he managed to turn away before it happened. “What!? You mean the one where... the one you said you'd...”

“The very same. Since you're not planning on making any new submissions for a while I guess I'll have to use that.”

“No need to do that!” he assures you nervously, glancing at Nanao. The younger woman narrows her eyes dangerously. “I'm sure I can get something to you by the end of the week. By the end of the day if you really need it!”

“...please don't print that other thing.”

“Glad to hear it!” you grin, finishing off your wagashi and moving on to the amber-colored brew Yoruichi's poured into a small, handle-less gray cup. It's very nice, light for a black tea, with a good floral taste to it with hints of some kind of stone fruit. You can see why she made a gift of it.

Yoruichi smirks at you. “Yeah, that should be good for readership. Makes a good pastime for the rank and file.”

“So now that we've got you talking, what's your stance on footwear?” you press, causing Yoruichi's grin to widen.

“What do you mean, Miss Riku?”

You shrug, feigning a casual tone. “Oh, you know. How many pairs of sandals do you have, how much do you like them, where do you typically keep them. That sort of thing.”

“Why does that matter?” he asks. “You don't even wear sandals.”

“Trust me,” Yoruichi insists with a knowing glance in your direction. “It matters.”

“Well, I usually keep a few spare pairs in the closet with my spare uniforms,” Shunsui tells you, scratching at his stubble. “Is that a bad thing?”

“Actually it's a good thing,” you smile. “The Old Man kept complaining that his would go missing from time to time. Mysteriously too, like out of his own apartments.”

“I'll keep that in mind,” Shunsui nods. “Did he ever figure out the cause?”

“Eventually.”

“Good to know. So, how are those human guests of yours progressing? Particularly that tall boy, the one with the messy hair and the weird arm.”

“Who, Yasutora? He's... not doing as good,” you admit, recalling the slow progress most of Ichigo's friends are making. “I'm having him help catch the others up. Ichigo's gotten pretty strong even since he fought Byakuya, and I've got Bambi helping train the Ishida boy.”

“And that karate girl you seemed so concerned for? Arisawa, was it?”

You frown at the new Head Captain. “Why would you say I was concerned for her?”

“I hear you were sort of soft on her in particular during the invasion. Looking back I realized you probably felt responsible for her.”

I was kind of figuring that the reason the copy didn't have the same 'spark' as the original is that Yoruichi didn't have any shinreiatsu to put in it, so her sword did the best it could and mimicked the functions of the original. If she had shinreiatsu, it would probably manifest as a perfect copy. Which is kind of scary, actually.

“I may have given her shinigami powers,” you admit, seeing an immediate look of shock on Shunsui's face. “Before you say anything else it was Ōetsu's idea. I just performed the technique. You know, I did all the actual work... like we always do.”

“They do seem good at getting other people to handle stuff for them,” Yoruichi admits thoughtfully. “They're like managers. I wonder when the last time any of them actually fought was?”

“Probably a while ago,” Shunsui guesses, setting his cup aside. “So what're you up to now, Captains? The conversation was nice and all, and I'm grateful for the company, but you've always got something else going on. Especially you, Lady Riku.”

“He's got you there.”

“Shut up, Rosa.”

“Okay,” Shunsui agrees, before realizing you weren't actually telling him to shut up. “Oh, you're doing that thing again. Sorry.”

“No problem,” you assure him with a raised hand. “What I'm here for is to ask you about the Ise clan's zanpakuto and the Sōkyoku. Both of these are divine in origin, yes?”

Nanao stares at you questioningly while Shunsui strokes his chin. “Now, why're you going and asking a thing like that? Yes... both of them are divine, as far as I'm aware.”

“And nobody's using them?” Yoruichi presses quietly, leaning forward on her cushion. “After all this trouble nobody's going to authorize unsealing the Sōkyoku for an execution again, maybe ever, and the last Ise clan head rejected their zanpakuto. Am I wrong?”

“You're not wrong,” Nanao admits cautiously. “What are you driving at, ma'am?”

“Shinreiryoku can be stolen,” you repeat Tenkotsuki's observation to looks of slowly-dawning comprehension. “If Aizen can do it so can I. And if there are sources out there that Yoruichi here's not responsible for, and that won't fight back, I can make use of it.”

You can tell there's a lot of skepticism there. Fair enough.

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you, you've forgotten how that quote goes but you think it's about trusting your own instincts and judgment. So you keep your head, and explain your thoughts to Shunsui and his Lieutenant.

“See, the way I look at it we have two choices: let Riku take the shinreiryoku from a bunch of divine artifacts nobody's using anyway, or wait around for the third or fourth attempt to steal them out from under our noses,” you explain carefully, watching Shunsui's reaction. “The former gets us better prepared for Aizen, who we already know is building up his strength in alarming ways, the latter lets our enemies get stronger instead.”

“It's a fair point Shunsui,” Yoruichi nods resolutely. “How many times have people either tried to do exactly that, or to some extent succeeded? And when the Ōken's gotta move at the end of the month, I fully expect it to happen again!”

“So why not just let one of ours take that useless stuff instead?” you ask.

“Well, I guess I can see the point,” Shunsui admits. “That does seem to be a recurring element to each of these attempted invasions. In fact I'm a little surprised the reigai haven't tried something like that yet. I keep expecting them to.”

“So I'm not hearing a no,” Yoruichi smiles.

“I'll have to argue the point to the Central 46,” Shunsui continues. “But I think that I might be able to get them to agree to something. The higher-profile artifacts may not be feasible but I'm sure there are some other trinkets we're only keeping around because they've got cool stories. Maybe they'll agree to let you take some of those.”

“I can only hope it actually amounts to something,” you reply. “The Central 46 isn't known for letting me do stuff.”

“Most people don't realize this, but I can be pretty persuasive when I need to be,” the Head Captain grins, shutting his good eye in thought. “I may actually make the same point you did: the secret's out, and someone's gonna start stealing all this crap and get real strong real quick. May as well be someone we actually kinda like.”

“What a ringing endorsement,” you grumble. “But thanks for agreeing to go to bat for me.”

“When I genuinely think it''s in all of our interest, it makes it easier.”

We should hand him Lisa's phone number when we leave. From thread 64

“I think you'll do the old man proud,” you tell Shunsui with a warm smile. “So just hang in there, okay?”

“Yes, ma'am!” Shunsui laughs. “And thanks... really.”

As you leave the room you take out a pen from the Head Captain's desk, and take out your phone. You then turn over a paper and write out a string of numbers. “If you have a free moment and need someone to talk to, try this number. I can promise it'll be a pleasant surprise.”

“I wonder what that is?” Nanao asks, cocking her head.

Shunsui shrugs. “Knowing Lady Riku's sense of humor it's probably an expensive sex line or something.”

“Oh ye of little faith,” you sigh. “Seriously, just give it a chance.”

“That was Yadomaru's cell number, wasn't it?” Yoruichi asks after you've excused yourselves. You nod and smile.

“I figured he could use something to be happy about.”

There are a few things on your mind at the moment. You should speak with Apacci and the others, since she'll likely have shared what you all learned about the reason behind the existence of hollows and how it may be impossible for you to ever really help solve that problem. But at the same time they'll need a chance to collect themselves: particularly Tia, who is deeply concerned with exactly that issue and to your knowledge always has been. So it may actually be better to give them the afternoon, speak to them personally after dinner. You're also concerned about Tatsuki, but it may be better to let her rest through the night and get her out of bed at a good time tomorrow morning.

What doesn't make sense to put off is finding Kūkaku, and in order to do that you should probably check with Kaoru to make sure the Shiba's Rukongai base is still in the same place. Kaoru, you find in the Kidō Corps barracks near the execution grounds.

“So how's the packing going?” you ask her. She turns to you with an uncharacteristic look of pure exhaustion on her face.

“I have no damned idea,” she moans. “I don't even know for sure which Division I'm gonna get stuck with, just that they're gonna use me to plug a hole. You here to help me pack?”

“I'm here to check on where Kūkaku is,” you explain. “There's a question I need her to answer.”

“Yeah, she's in the same place,” Kaoru tells you. “I'll head there over the weekend, once I'm done moving out. You want me to take you there?”

“That'd save a lot of time,” you nod. “And I've got a ton of stuff to do, so faster is better.”

“You've always got something stupidly important going on,” your sister sighs. “Never mundane with you, huh?”

After transporting you to the location of the Rukongai base with a spell, Kaoru motions for you to go in past the giant stone arms. “Can't miss the damn thing. The woman's taste is honestly starting to get embarrassing.”

“What else is family for?” you grin. “Take care, see you later, Kaoru. And thanks for the hand.”

“What else is family for?” Kaoru repeats with a smile of her own.

Down several long flights of stairs and a long hallway, you find an open room where your sister is having her younger brother serve tea. She glares angrily at him as he spills a little bit of hot water on the floor.

“Come on,” she growls, “you're doing it wrong! How're you gonna be someone's husband some day if you can't handle basic household shit?”

“Maybe I'll just stay single?' Ganjū suggests with a meek laugh before Kūkaku smacks him over the head.

“Not gonna happen!” she retorts. “You've gotta carry on the family name, you little shit, so get used to people expecting you to make something of yourself!”

“Ah, Riku!” she greets you, waving to a couple of cushions. “And your lovely wife too, please, sit down!”

“Wait, wife?” Ganjū asks, pointing at Yoruichi. “You mean I won't have to marry either of those monst... I mean, I'll probably be married to someone else?”

“At this rate I'll get my parents to set you up with Yūshiro,” Yoruichi grumbles at him, clearly taking the 'monster' comment he held back personally. “He could be the man in that relationship.”

“It's funny cause he wears girl clothes,” you add, taking a cup of tea for yourself. “So, sis, I've gotta talk to you about something.”

“Shoot,” she replies, lying down on her side on the tatami. She can't even be bothered to keep up the appearance of formality, not when it's just family.

“Things are going to get a little intense around here,” you tell your adoptive sister. “I'm sure you know that everyone and their mother is targeting sources of divine power. The Royal Guard are even getting involved now, and one of them might've mentioned you had some dealings with them in the past.”

“I did,” she acknowledges from the floor. “What of it?”

“Did you at any point have an Ōken? If you still do, it could put you in danger.”

“I did have one,” she sighs, glancing down at her stump. “Still tickles some times. I think Shutara kept it after they cut it off.”

“When the hell did this happen!?” Yoruichi demands loudly, glaring down at her friend. “Why didn't you ever tell me that's why you lost your arm!?”

“Couldn't,” your sister tells your wife. “They brought me up there to do some serious infrastructural work, improve their means of moving back and forth between there and the Seireitei. In order to pass between realms I had to have an Ōken. They offered to let me stay, but I refused because the Shiba family was more important to me.”

“So they took the Ōken back, for exactly this reason.”

“You said Shutara kept it?” you press, still surprised at the notion that your sister's arm is still lying around someplace.

“In stasis,” Kūkaku nods. “In case I ever wanted to come back and live there permanently.”

“Why?”

"Well, I was thinking we should do some cross-training," you admit, "get you back into the swing of working with the Gotei 13. That sound like a good plan?"

"I think I can do that," she agrees. "But you're thinking something else?"

>If you went to get your arm back, then the Royal Guard would assume you're there to take the offer. They wouldn't like it if I suddenly appeared and siphoned the Shinreiryoku out of the Ōken in your detached arm after you got it back. That would make me a target to them.

On second thought, This is a bad idea since there's no way the RG won't figure out what happened.

Or you could just explain the situation to Shutara. You know, exactly the same way you explained it to Shunsui and Kuukaku.
>>
>>594451
Honestly fuck'em. As far as we can tell their not much use anyway.
>>
>>594494
so then why are you still voting for nomming the shinreiryoku from the arm?
I don't think we can replace it with a fake. They would be able to tell because of the lack of Shinreiryoku.
>>
>>594520
Probably the best way to do things.

>>594523
While they would know it was a fake they wouldn't know what happened to it.
What's more likely us or Aizen.
>>
>>594520
Huh. I guess that'd be worth a try. Not that we're gonna actually meet the DC a second time.

>>594522
yeah. and the ones I wouldn't want to kill would probably be fine with this as long as we tell them.

That's pretty much my thoughts on the matter as well.

“Well, tomorrow morning you and I can try and get Shutara to give you the arm back,” you suggest. “I can take whatever shinreiryoku is left in it and use it to bring my Bankai closer to completion, and then see if I can't figure out how to reattach it.”

“I do kinda miss the stupid thing sometimes,” your sister muses to herself. “Okay, you've got a deal. But that's on one condition.”

“And what's the condition?”

Kūkaku smirks confidently. “You've gotta stay for dinner for once. Everyone else is comin' over.”

With a smile of your own, you agree to her terms.

It's many hours into the night, after eating and drinking more than your fill with Kaoru, Kūkaku, Miyako, Yoruichi, and a thoroughly terrified Ganjū, that you finally slink off back to the Seireitei with your wife in tow. But as you wind your way through the streets near the Ninth Division's barracks, under the light of a nearly full moon in a clear sky full of stars, you feel yourself suddenly gripped by an unavoidable sense of danger.

Three powerful reiatsu sources emerge into the Seireitei, clustered together: all three of them are quincies.

Ugh, I hope these ones we can kill without feeling bad about it. We got too many prisoners already.
>>

And here is where I call it for the weekend. I've got shit to do later this morning, and it's already nearly one. Archive is up on sup/tg/, but fair warning: if you're the type to up/downvote that'll only work on the /qst/ archive page, despite the fact that it shows up on both.

Shoot me some askfm questions if you'd like, or post 'em here and I may get around to it. Next thread will likely be this weekend, and I'll announce on twitter.

Thanks for playing, and hope you're looking forward to the next string of battles! Shit kinda gets real from here on.

it could also be the Karakura ones

SHIT. THE NEXT WAVE IS HERE. AND THEY'RE MOST LIKELY HERE FOR RIKU.

Well duh. Aizen sending mooks to kill Riku or die is a long established tradition at this point.

OOC, you're getting down to the REAL nutjobs and diehards. This fight's also going to reveal a lot about what Aizen's been thinking, and what he's trying to accomplish with what a lot of you have treated as a really stupid strategy.

It makes sense from his perspective.

>This fight's also going to reveal a lot about what Aizen's been thinking, and what he's trying to accomplish with what a lot of you have treated as a really stupid strategy.
Well, part of his problem (and this showed up in canon even worse), was that he was willing to expend everything to get past the Gotei 13, leaving nothing in reserve to handle the Royal Guard. He seems to have the same issue here, he might take the Gotei 13, and maybe even the royal guard, but by that point he'll be alone, and if the other Pantheons decide to take him out...

>OOC, you're getting down to the REAL nutjobs and diehards
There's still Nelliel and Bazz left I think.

>Shunsui: How hard are you regretting on writing that smut fic?
>Nanao: Do you have any idea on what got Shunsui worked up when Riku pulled out his old submission to the papers?
>Tatsuki: So was getting stabbed in the heart by Ichigo's aunt to turn into a living human Shimigami worth it? Was it worth the pain to impress your ex?
>Ichigo: so... do you get an understanding on why tatsuki went through the process? What's your thoughts on the following girls?: Tatsuki, Apacci, Orihime, Rukia

So basically expect no mercy and all the cruelty. we'll act accordingly and give an appropriate response.
>>
>>594730
Queen said expect almost all of the reasonable ones to be zombies at this point so although we treat them accordingly, expect to receive nor be given any mercy.

That's what Ichigo does, anon. He spams Getsuga and slashes diagonally until he wins. Except for Yhwach, who he apparently beat with just a horizontal slash from his shikai.

I'll ask you the again when you're fully recovered and done being unconscious.
>What's Candice's current record for her longest time without doing the following activities: (A: spouting a sexual innuendo. B: attempting to get off by masturbation. C: having thoughts not related to sex)? [you may individually categorize it]
>Implied BerryBowl: "Why is Orihime on that list?"
Who do you think is qualified for the BerryBowl if there is a BerryBowl in the first place?
>Tenkotsuki: How disappointed were you when you found out Yoruichi couldn't replicate shinreiyoku from divine objects?
>To Shunsui and Riku: So when Shunsui goes to bat at the C-46 baseball field, what's your prediction on the commotion level that the household hens will throw? Stunned panic at the revelation? Or More thrown salt just because the Hen-house Fox (read:Riku) is implied to be involved in the solution?
>>
>>598383
>Regarding Candice
She's not actually that bad. What she lacks is the ability to distinguish between appropriate and inappropriate behavior, so when she thinks something sexual or gets confused that immediately comes out. It's part of what's happened to her brain due to her extreme age. Liltotto struggles with empathy, Meninas doesn't always think things through the way she used to, and although Bambietta always had a thing for power dynamics it eventually devolved into outright sadism: and not the kinky kind. What she lost was moderation. Giselle's moral compass cracked decades ago, which makes it acceptable in her mind to kill and zombify her own friends.

>BerryBowl
"Well if you're dead set on making this a thing, you know what's up with Tatsuki. Rukia gets flustered a lot around me but she gets flustered easily in general whenever it's not her commanding officer that's messing with her, and I think Apacci just enjoys making fun of me."

"Orihime seems nice and all, but she's... you know. Not very social. Super-quiet, and a little weird."

>Shunsui
"I'm... not entirely sure I follow your analogy. But the Central 46 isn't gonna like this. They don't like ANYTHING, really, which is part of the problem: you don't just get to keep sayin' no when you never say yes to anything."

It's his left hand, and that's pretty easy to do. Just stand up in a normal stance, lift your left arm away from your body until it's even with your shoulder (like a T pose, but just with your left), bend your shoulder but keep your elbow and wrist straight to get your arm behind your back, then bend your elbow slightly. Virgil's a super powerful half-demon, so he can fire a high powered handgun like that without fucking up his arm, that's all(just don't try this at home).
>>
>>602595
That's Vergil's left arm over the top of Dante's right, so yeah. It wouldn't be a comfortable shooting position, but they're just .45acp. So Vergil probably has no trouble shooting it like that.

Really, it's more Dante's position that would be a pain for most shooters. Extending one hand you're supposed to hold a pistol at a slight angle because of how your radius tends to rest when your arm is extended. If you try too hard to hold it straight vertically it puts unnecessary tension on your elbow, and actually reduces your arm's ability to absorb the recoil.

I'm sure Dante's body will find a way to deal with that kind of trauma, somehow.
